EDITORIAL Txt. Jonathan Levin Negli anni ‘50, lo psicologo Solomon Elliot Asch condusse un importante esperimento sulla conformità sociale. L’ipotesi di base era che individui facenti parte di uno stesso gruppo si lasciano facilmente influenzare dalle opinioni e dalle percezioni degli altri membri del gruppo. L’esperimento si svolse come segue: ad un gruppo di partecipanti vennero fatti vedere una serie di due fogli. Sul primo foglio una linea nera, sul secondo foglio invece, tre linee nere di diverse lunghezze. Ai partecipanti venne chiesto a turno di indicare quale delle tre linee nere fosse della stessa lunghezza della linea nera sul primo foglio. La particolarità di questo esperimento fu nel fatto che degli otto partecipanti, sette erano attori a cui gli era stato detto di dare sempre la risposta sbagliata. L’unico inconsapevole partecipante si ritrovò così in una situazione in cui furono messi in discussione la sua percezione e la sua razionalità. L’esperimento ebbe talmente successo che fu ripetuto e ripetuto fino a diventare di rilevante importanza per la psicologia sociale. Il 75% dei partecipanti si conformò almeno una volta alla pressione del gruppo, vale a dire che diedero coscientemente la risposta sbagliata perché era la risposta che diedero tutti gli altri membri del gruppo. Da quì la conclusione che la paura di opporsi all’opinione della maggioranza porta gli individui a conformarsi per non sentire compromessa la fiducia in sé. E qui arriviamo al nocciolo della questione. Lo skateboarding mondiale sembra essere in preda ad un attacco di conformismo diffuso, essendo colpito dall’alto, dal basso e dal di dentro da forze superiori che stanno tentando in ogni modo di ridurre la sua essenza al mero denaro, e lo skater ad un semplice consumatore di prodotti, abbigliamento, stili e modi di pensare. Risulta sempre più difficile essere originali e rompere gli schemi, essendo stato tutto già fatto o visto ad nauseam... spegnete internet per un attimo e riflettete... Qui entra in scena il Friday Night Nightmare, skate jam senza regole il cui unico scopo è quello di invadere le strade della città urlando, facendo casino e divertendosi. Da sempre gli ingredienti indispensabili di questa cultura libera, disinteressata, e anticonformista che dovrebbe essere lo skateboarding. Proprio come nell’esperimento di Asch, la risposta a tutta questa situazione è lì, davanti ai nostri occhi e dentro di noi. Non lasciamo che siano altri a imporci la loro opinione e le loro idee. Be creative. Be yourself.
In the 1950’s, the psychologist Solomon Elliot Asch conducted an important experiment on social conformity. The grassroots hypothesis was that individuals of the same group are easily influenced by the opinions and the perceptions of other members of the group. The experiment was carried out as follows: a group of participants were shown a series of sheets. On the first sheet was drawn a black line. On the second sheet were drawn three black lines of varying lengths. The participants were asked in turn to indicate which of the three black lines was of the same length as the black line on the first sheet. The peculiarity of this experiment lay in the fact that of the eight participants, seven were actors who had been told to all give the same wrong answer. The sole unaware participant thus found himself in a situation where his perception and rationality were called into question. The experiment was so successful that it was repeated over and over, eventually becoming of high relevance for social psychology. 75% of the participants conformed at least once to group pressure, meaning they consciously gave the wrong answer because it was the answer given by all the other members of the group. Thus the conclusion that the fear of disagreeing to the opinion of the majority pushes individuals to conform in order to avoid damaging their self-esteem. Now we get to the heart of the matter. Skateboarding worldwide seems to have fallen prey to a widespread fit of conformity, being attacked from above, below, and the inside from superior forces that are trying everything possible to reduce its essence to mere money, and the skateboarder to a simple consumer of products, clothing, styles, and ways of thinking. It is constantly more difficult to be original and think outside of the box. Everything has been seen or done ad nauseam...turn off internet for a moment and think it over... This is where the Friday Night Nightmare comes into the picture. A skate jam with no rules and whose only purpose is to invade the streets screaming and having fun, the only real ingredients of this free and open-minded culture of skateboarding. Just like in the Asch experiment, the answer to this whole situation is right there, in front of our eyes and inside of us. Let us not allow others to impose their opinions and ideas on us. Be creative. Be yourself.

Ogni skater che conosco ha sempre una storia da raccontare quando si parla di fughe o impicci per strada, è normale, lo skateboarding è come vedere un sorcio in strada! Anche uno da solo può seminare panico e terrore a chi non è abituato.... figuratevi che cosa succede quando scateni l’ira di più sorci in una città che ancora passa la domenica davanti al televisore o a cercare di capire come si paga una bolletta del telefono. Il Friday Night Nightmare è un tributo a questa inadeguatezza, un tributo ai vecchi che hanno paura e a quelli che credevano che l’ultima emozione l’avessero vissuta guardando l’ennesimo gioco a premi delle 7!!! La prima edizione di questo raduno o come lo si voglia definire è stata nel 2005. L’itinerario viene pensato sempre in modo diverso o quasi, rigorosamente di venerdì notte. Un appuntamento che fu ispirato in parte dallo skateboarding che avevo visto fare negli anni ‘80 quì a Roma, ma pubblicizzato come mi capitò di vedere a SF quando mi fu data una fotocopia rozzissima con scritto: Last Annual Skate Jam (venivano messe delle strutture in mezzo ad un incrocio e si skateava). Avendo conosciuto da poco un tatuatore, Welt, che aveva una predisposizione innata per grafiche in stile Zorlac, (una volta mi fece vedere un biglietto da visita del suo studio, descrivendomelo poi come una mossa anticommerciale, che era tremendo, con due zombie putrefatti dietro ad una lapide che indicavano l’indirizzo dello studio...sulla lapide) decidemmo allora di creare un apposito flyer e di mandare in giro delle fotocopie che potessero dare vita ad una jam urbana senza regole, aperta a tutti e rigorosamente in skate...e così fu. Ogni anno il Friday ha avuto exploit degni di nota, gesta che andavano da un rutto in faccia ad una signora fino ad un incidente di un motociclista preso da uno skate vagante; il pilota della moto quando realizzò di essere finito per terra a causa di una tavola e vedendo un esercito di sorci che venivano giù urlando e ruttando decise di raccattare i pezzi del suo mezzo e andarsene. All’inizio anche Welt partecipava assiduamente, solo che un anno organizzammo la partenza in cima ad un discesone bello veloce e lui cadde sui suoi tatuaggi. Per giustificare l’improvvisa scomparsa dalla serata mi disse: “aò, io me ne vado, se ti chiedono dove sto digli che mi hanno rapito gli alieni”. Un altro aspetto molto interessante è il tipo di skater che prende parte al Friday, un gruppo è composto da frequentatori abituali, gente che skatea regolarmente, l’altro, quello “speciale” riguarda persone che avevo conosciuto 20 anni prima e che skateano solo quel giorno o quasi. Viene di tutto: avvocati, ingegneri, conti, dottori, tossicodipendenti e addirittura stripper professionisti!!! Devo dire che con il passare delle edizioni si è avuto un numero decrescente di affluenze ma è anche vero che meno gente viene e più la jam è teppistica e veloce, quest’anno si è sfiorato l’episodio “con la pistola” ad opera di un metronotte terrorizzato...un cosa non nuova se si ricorda quello che successe a JOE, graffitaro romano colpito ad una spalla durante una fuga in stile western tra i binari della metro. Il prossimo anno spero di realizzare un sogno che ho da tempo che è quello di partire da una discesa chiamata il K2, i superstiti verranno premiati a dovere...sempre che ce ne siano...
When Rome is described as an ancient city, what people don’t realize is that it is ancient under all aspects, both physical and mental. Every skater I know always has stories to tell when it comes to escapes or street hustlin’, it’s only natural, skateboarding is like seeing a rat on the street! Just one can cause havoc and terror to someone who is not used to it…you can imagine what happens when you let loose a pack of angry rats in a city that still spends its Sundays in front of the TV or trying to figure out how the hell you pay phone bills. The Friday Night Nightmare is a tribute to this inadequacy, a tribute to the elderly that are scared to death and those that thought for a moment they had experienced the ultimate emotion watching the seven O’clock TV quiz!!! The first edition of this gathering or however you wanna call it, took place in 2005. The route is pretty much always thought up differently, and strictly on a Friday night. A recurrence inspired in part by the skateboarding I witnessed going down in Rome in the 80’s, but publicized the way I happened to experience it in SF when I was given a sketchy photocopy with written on it: Last Annual Skate Jam (makeshift ramps positioned and shredded at an intersection). Having just met Welt, a tattoo artist who had an innate inclination for drawing Zorlac-style graphics, (he once showed me his business card, describing it to me as an anti-commercial move, and was tremendous, with these two rotten zombies behind a tombstone pointing to the tattoo studio’s address…engraved on the tombstone) we decided to create an appropriate flyer and spread around some photocopies to promote an urban skate jam without rules, open to all skaters…and so it was. Every year the Friday had deeds worthy of praise, performances ranging from burps in a lady’s face to a motorcycle accident caused by a stray skateboard; when the pilot of the motorcycle realized he had fallen to the ground because of a skateboard, and saw that an army of rats was coming down screaming and burping, he decided it was better to scrape up the pieces of his vehicle and just take off. The first few times Welt himself attended assiduously, until one year we departed from the top of a pretty fast hill and he fell on his tattoos. To justify his sudden disappearance that night he told me, “yo, I’m out of here, if they ask you where I am tell them I was kidnapped by aliens.” Another interesting aspect is the type of skater that takes part in the Friday jam. One group is composed of habitual frequenters, guys that skate regularly. The other group, the “special” one, is composed of people I met 20 years ago and skate only on that day. You got all sorts of guys: lawyers, engineers, counts, doctors, junkies, and even a professional stripper!!! I must say that every year the number of participants has declined, but it is also true that the fewer people show up, the more the jam is fast and rowdy. This year we nearly had a “gun” incident involving a terrorized security guard… something that is not new if you remember what happened to JOE, a Roman graffiti writer that was shot in a shoulder during a westernstyle escape on the subway tracks. Next year I would like to fulfill a dream I’ve had for quite some time, which is to depart from the top of a hill in Rome called the K2. The survivors will be properly rewarded… provided there are any…
