dream homes of this spring
APRIL’S CHARMS When April scatters charms of primrose gold Among the copper leaves in thickets old, And singing skylarks from the meadows rise, To twinkle like black stars in sunny skies; When I can hear the small woodpecker ring Time on a tree for all the birds that sing; And hear the pleasant cuckoo, loud and long -The simple bird that thinks two notes a song; When I can hear the woodland brook, that could Not drown a babe, with all his threatening mood; Upon these banks the violets make their home, And let a few small strawberry blossoms come: When I go forth on such a pleasant day, One breath outdoors takes all my cares away; It goes like heavy smoke, when flames take hold Of wood that's green and fill a grate with gold.
William Henry Davies (1871-1940)

Dear Reader
We’ve probably mentioned it many times already but April is just one of the most wonderful months of the year here in Denmark. The expectations of the months ahead are practically bubbling up inside us. It’s such a beautiful thing when everything starts to bloom and we transition from the dark and cold of winter to lighter, warmer and greener days. Our hands are itching to get out into the garden and patio. To get started planting and fixing up. We can head outside to do some raking and weeding but we’ll have to use a bit of patience as far as planting goes. Most of us have had the experience – and some more times than others – of being seized with wanton excitement and falling for the amazing selection at nurseries and florists right now. Spent a lot of money and planted our pots and flower beds only to have a sudden night frost set in and kill everything. It’s such a shame. So this year we’re going to wait patiently and just start by getting ready for spring indoors: Make use of some of the wonderful plants inside and wait until the end of the month to plant outside. Begin with some of the hardier plants. Until then you can get set about doing some small, cozy projects to pass the time while you wait. In this issue we’re featuring an article with plenty of ideas and inspiration for how to make your own ”brocante” finds very inexpensively out of recycled materials, flea market finds and new materials, just using a bit of paint or making other small changes. We’ll also show you several other DIY projects that hint at the coming of spring, including a pretty planting table that’s perfect for preparing the coming months of gardening. Or perhaps you’ll be spending a Saturday sewing new pillows for the living room in true vintage style or playing around with wallpaper. The urge for renewal that seems to always be brought on by the arrival of spring can certainly be satisfied with small things.

Dressing Room
In this series where we’re following the remodel of Jørgen and Lonnie’s second floor at their home, Lindely, we’re now getting to the smallest of the attic rooms. The attic is original to the house, and the room is not very big. In order to create a more usable room with a better sense of space, the ceiling has been opened up to the ridge. The exposed beams are left with their natural finish and help to create a cozy atmosphere in the room. The wall facing the staircase has been replaced with a large, beautiful, old window section with shutters. This makes the room feel more spacious while also allowing the light to stream through to the large landing, eliminating the need for skylights. The window section is from Egypt and was purchased from www.genbyg.dk.
Lonnie uses the room as her dressing room. Two old farmhouse cupboards hold her clothes. They’re both painted with Vintage paint. The darker one was painted in ’Vintage red’ and then sanded around all of the edges. If you’re going to sand a cupboard as much as this one, using a sander for the job is advisable. Finally the cupboard was treated with Antique wax in ’Brown’. The other cupboard has also been painted with ’Vintage red’ although mixed with ’French beige’ and ’Soft cream’ to make a lighter version of the color. The cupboard has been sanded lightly around the edges.
The secondhand radiator cover was purchased from www.genbyg.dk and has been painted to match the walls, which are painted with Vintage paint in ’Light petrol’ mixed with ’French beige’ and ’Soft cream’. Mixing a color with one of the lighter colors will produce a more muted shade. Colors that are especially well-suited for this purpose include ’Soft cream’, which produces a quite light shade, and ’French beige’, which yields a dustier color. Lonnie actually really likes leaving old things and building materials with their original paint but in order to fit the radiator cover over the radiator, they had to make new sides so it needed to be painted to achieve a uniform look.
