A few words from the editor Welcome to our winter issue of Irish Roots magazine. We are mindful of the recent loss of life, destruction and devastation caused to the people of New York and the North East coast of the US by the wrath of recent hurricane Sandy, all affected are very much in our thoughts at this time. No doubt many will have lost family heirlooms, photographs and family history details in the widespread flooding that ensued, a bleak reminder of how precious and fragile our family mementoes truly are. On November 8 last the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, T.D. launched the National Archives of Ireland’s major new website www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie. The new site allows free to access through searchable online database records, access to Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1837 and access to Irish Soldiers’ Wills 1914-1917. Further Irish Soldiers’ Wills records for 1918 will follow in 2013. During his launch speech Minister Deenihan referred to his reform proposals for the National Library and the National Archives. The Minister’s full press release outlining future reforms is now available at www.ahg.gov.ie/en/PressReleases/2012/ October2012. Further record releases in November include a military census carried out by the army of the Irish Free State in 1922 which was released by the Irish Army’s archive on November 13 to coincide with its 90th anniversary see www.militaryarchives.ie. More welcome news from the General Register Office is that up to three persons can now work collectively on one General Search fee costing €20. Each person on a General Search is now entitled to order up to eight uncertified copies (photocopies) of register entries. www.cigo.ie/news.html. The charge for each photocopy is currently €4. We are delighted to be able to bring you the above good news from the world of genealogy and we hope that the newly released records for some family history researchers at least will ensure that it really will be a very merry Christmas this year! Wishing you all the compliments of the season and a peaceful, safe and abundant 2013. Slán go fóill.
