JULY I go for a walk barefoot Enjoying some deliberate loneliness Smiling to this war m July Catching the thought of your love My feet sink in fur ther Leaving footpr ints in the sand Footprints that will last Until c aught by the sea Onc e the sea has washed away the marks Have they then disappeared c ompletely? Or are they like invisible ink, Connected to all the other marks? Where do they go and whom do they follow? Which hor izon do they tur n to? Longing for land on passionate waves Or even deeper water – not knowing the way?

Dear Reader

Sitting her, looking through our July edition of the magazine, the first thing that comes to my mind is...how to take a short break from everyday life. The homes, the recipes and not least the gardens that we’re showing you this time all encourage you to focus on such short breaks. Many of us would benefit from being better at taking a break from everyday life in the situations that we’re in right now. This is a difficult thing to do when you’re feeling busy and have a thousand things on your to-do-list...things that you just HAVE to sort out before you can allow yourself to enjoy life. Also, nowadays it’s quite complicated to notice and enjoy the beauty in the here and now...and sometimes in the imperfect. Just enjoying the things as they are instead of always wanting something else, something more, before we can feel happy. And what exactly is perfect? What’s perfect for you might not be perfect for me or your neighbor. We all have to find out the answer for ourselves. Here at Jeanne d’Arc Living, we’re well-known for loving the wild and the imperfect, and for noticing fading beauty. To us, such things are perfect; however, we don’t always agree on the limits. We also need to get better at enjoying things even though in our opinion they’re not perfect. And we’ve got to allow ourselves to take a break from everyday life because that’s also when life is being lived. Right now, many of us are on summer holiday or getting ready for it. Perhaps this is a good time to practice taking breaks. No matter what you’re up to, we hope that you’ll spend one of your breaks enjoying our company and the magazine. Enjoy the summer!

Marleen lives in the Dutch village of Kloetinge along with her husband and their three children. Slowly but surely, they’ve finished renovating their house and they’ve used old and antique materials that underline the atmosphere and the soul of the house. Marleen prefers light color shades in her interior design so all the basic elements of the house are in light colors. Many of the other interior design elements are very colorful and this combination creates a wonderful, summery feel in this beautiful home. As an example, colors are introduced through a pair of blue cushions, a blue bow round the waist of an old dressmaker’s dummy or a small, rose-colored piece of furniture. Colors are also found as the background color in a painting or in the wonderful sofa dolls throughout the house. Here, Marleen is showing you how to maintain a calm but still very interesting atmosphere in your home by adding a few colorful things. 9
