MATH Visualising fractions as parts of a whole.

session 3.

The reason why learning fractions proves difficult for many students is the way they are typically taught. There are so many rules to learn about fractions. If students are force to memorize them without knowing where they came from, the rules will seem extremely difficult to comprehend. Students often become blind followers of the rules, tossing numbers and getting answers without understanding what those numbers mean.

You will learn

1

How to introduce fractions to students.

2

How to teach math vocabulary.

3

How to use visual aids in teaching mathematics.

Task 1.Answer The loaf of bread is divided into two equal parts.

The grapefruit is divided into four equal parts.

Into how many parts are those figures divided?

Write down your answer.

Fractions are parts of a whole

1 pear

1 out of three parts of a pear

1 pear cut into 3 equal pieces

Task 8. Make a Missing Numerator game.

It is a variant of the popular Snakes and Ladders game but there is no dice involved. Instead, players move by solving mathematical equations from the Move Deck. You will build the game in two steps. 1. Drawing the board. 2. Preparing the Move Deck.

Go to your classroom (workshop with students)
