COLD NOODLES? YES, PLEASE

A welcome sign of the changing season isn’t just warming weather, it’s cold noodles, especially for those fond of ramen. And the best place to find cold noodles in Salem is AKAI Ramen & Izakaya which features the seasonal dish on its menu until the end of Summer.

The local eatery, which opened in late December 2022, offers up silky, springy Somen noodles (thinly cut wheat flour noodles that have a light texture and mild flavor) served with a balanced portion of shredded egg, fresh shrimp, crispy cucumber and juicy tomato, with a splash of Somen sauce — no broth — and topped with green onion. A classic.

Keep it local and honor the izakaya side of things (izakaya is a traditional Japanese bar that serves alcoholic beverages and affordable snacks and dishes) — add a bottle of Momokawa Junmai Ginjo Craft Sake from SakéOne Brewery out of Forest Grove to your meal. The medium-dry sake pairs well with Somen. And include some panseared veggie gyoza to start.

Somen Cold Noodles at AKAI truly fit the summertime vibe — A refreshing bite to satisfy that ramen itch. Enjoy!

LET'S DO BRUNCH

Satiate your craving for breakfast + lunch — dive in fork first at some of our favorite brunch spots in Salem.

Honey & Co.

Now open downtown, Rob the Bartender aka Rob Melton and his lovely wife Honey, I mean, Donna, have opened a sweet spot on Court Street. Living up to their tagline “Salem’s Brunch Spot,” they offer breakfast classics, like scrambles, omelets and benedicts, as well as lunch favs, such as sandwiches, smash burgers and salads, plus a mimosa bar. Vegan options? You bet. And be sure to check the specials board for additional items not on the regular menu. 250 Court St NE , 503-362-3447, honeyandcosalem. com

Serving Brunch: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mon-Sat and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sun

Josey’s Restaurant

You’ll find classic American breakfast with classic diner ambiance—inside—at Josey’s (outside, you may not realize it’s open). Give it a chance and you will discover a great little no-frills diner all around, right down to the plates. 2280 Broadway St NE, 503-399-0046

Serving Brunch: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mon-Sat and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sun

Lively Station

The ambiance (it once was a train depot), the location (a little ways out but so worth it), the people (co-owners Anton and Jessica Cobb are friendly folk). Lively Station is a unique spot in South Salem and the brunch offerings are an extension of that originality, from a benedict with three types of pork to raspberry mint julep flapjacks. They also offer some sandwiches, salads, and, of course, brunch cocktails. 3635 River Road S, 503-991-5261, livelystation.com

Noble Wave

It may only be one day a week, but it’s a day not to be missed. Sunday brunch - all-day brunch - at Noble Wave is a thing. But don’t go here if you are just looking for bacon ‘n eggs. Their brunch is an extension of their regular menu highlighting Cajun, Creole and southern food. Think biscuits & gravy, chicken & waffles, shrimp & grits, and more. Plus your classic brunch cocktails. 189 Liberty St NE, #112, 971-304-7974, enjoynoblewave.com

Patty’s Off-Center Cafe

When confronted with a too-long wait at another spot, we popped around the corner to find (tucked away) Patty’s OffCenter Cafe — So glad the other place had that wait because this little diner is a friendly spot with fast service. Sassy Onion

Sassy Onion is a busy breakfast spot boasting world-famous French toast. Now I cannot attest to whether it is world-famous, but I did tell my mum about it and she’s in Canada. Whatever the case, it’s memorable for its crunchy coating and ample size. But if French toast isn’t your jam, they also have the range of typical breakfast items, and a variety of Sassy specialties, too. 1244 State St and 3310 Market St NE, 503378-9180, sassyonion.com

With omlette in the name, you know you must try one, but breakfast of any sort is a winner at Sybil’s. Ample portions, and lots of options - maybe too many. Or maybe that just means visiting often to work your way through the menu, one dish at a time. Prepare yourself. It’ll take a while. 2373 State St, 503-581-7724, sybilsomelettes.com

White’s Restaurant

Salem’s oldest diner, White’s serves hearty breakfast favorites and lunch classics, too. Notables? Don’s Big Mess, of course. It’s a plate of meat, veg and hashbrowns grilled together and then topped - or smothered as they admit - in sausage gravy. Bring your appetite, it’s the “big mess” after all, although you can get a half-mess or a mini mess, but where’s the fun in that? 1138 Commercial St SE, 503-363-0297, whitesrestaurant1936.com

Taproot has always had a diverse, plentiful menu and their offerings for breakfast are no different. From Eggs Benedict to Huevos Rancheros and several signature dishes in between, you shouldn’t be hard-pressed to find something you like, but you may be asking yourself how you choose. Try something unique. They offer acai bowls, which combine the healthy berry with juice and are topped with granola and your choice of fixin’s.

Taproot at the Old Mill Cafe, 1313 Mill St, also offers brunch with a slightly different menu, but just as tasty (note it's closed on Mondays). 356 State St, 503363-7668, taprootloungeandcafe.com

ADDITIONAL TIDBITS

Word of Mouth (WOM) truly is a neighborhood bistro. Nestled into an old house, utilizing every nook and cranny, this scratch-made eatery gives you that cozy, homemade vibe. But remember, homemade doesn’t mean boring. WOM has cornered the menu on unique signature dishes, such as their Creme Brulee Fresh Toast. They also always feature specials so surprises are in store. Boy Gets Girl

At first sight, Pentacle Theatre’s production of Boy Gets Girl may elicit feelings of a classic Hollywood romance: An accomplished career woman, feeling unfulfilled in her personal life, is set up on a blind date. It offers the excitement of pursuit. The possibility of two unlikely people finding love.

“At the beginning, it’s evocative of a rom-com,” says Director Emily Loberg. But audiences will learn quickly that Boy Gets Girl doesn’t fit neatly into a single genre. “I’m trying to direct it to take audiences on a journey.”

The journey will cross over from romance to chiller after the lead, Theresa, agrees to a second date with Tony and then realizes it’s not what she’s looking for. Tony responds to Theresa’s rejection with obsessive and threatening behavior.

Pentacle Theatre's latest stage production questions our assumptions about love

Emily's own journey with the play started four years ago, long before she’d be making her lead in-person directorial debut at Pentacle. She was at the library looking for a different script when she stumbled into Boy Gets Girl by Rebecca Gilman.

“I started reading it by accident, but read the whole thing in a day,” she said.

Before staging a single element of the script, Emilysaid the cast – “all really kind humans and all really hard-working” – spent a week discussing the play. In their conversations, they found every person had their own story relating to harassment or another difficult theme of the story.

“It can be cathartic to have those stories told on stage,” Emily said. Audiences will likely come away from the play feeling disturbed, but

Tickets: tickets.pentacletheatre.org

Emily also hopes they have a renewed urgency to question assumptions about love, relationships, and success.

“Some of the things the play explores is how romantic love is the highest form of love. That can create isolation,” Emily said, “and the pressure to give in when someone doesn’t really want to.”

SALEM SEEKERS

Treasure awaits some lucky scavenger hunters this summer as Salem Seekers returns for a second year.

Salem Seekers is a free scavenger hunt, started by Pamela Garland, that aims to encourage people to go outside and make memories together while celebrating Salem’s community spaces — our parks.

Beginning in June, 30 hand-blown glass birds created by Glass Art Oregon will be hidden — in plain sight — in a different park each month through September. They will be placed on or near pathways and other easily accessible areas, never tucked in trees or bushes. Still, be considerate of the neighbors when seeking.

Each month the hunt will take place at a different park and the birds will be placed throughout the month on random dates to mix up the opportunity to find a treasure.

Here’s when and where to watch for birds —

Jun 1-30: Hoodview Park, 4300 Kale St NE

Jul 1-31: Bryan Johnston Park, 400 Mildred Ln SE

Aug 1-31: River Road Park, 3045 River Rd N

Sep 1-30: Eola Ridge Park, 2546 Dan Ave NW

Those lucky enough to locate a bird are asked to share their find with Salem Seekers on social media. And if you find multiple, please only take one per household so the enjoyment can be shared.

Now go, explore, discover...and follow along at instagram.com/salem_seekers

The IRONMAN 70.3 Oregon has found a home in Salem (at least through 2028 — hopefully longer). The annual race brings 2,500 athletes to compete in a 1.2-mile downriver swim in the Willamette River, a 56-mile bike ride through Oregon’s wine country and a 13.1-mile run in Minto Brown Island Park. (It also brings about 7,500 additional visitors — Welcome, athletes and supporters!)

Each athlete will have 8 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race, which begins at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, July 21. An awards ceremony and the 2024 at 3:45 p.m. completes the day.

Saturday morning itinerary in Salem —

Morning stroll through Minto Brown Park, to check out the eagles’ nests along the river. Parking at the old hazelnut orchard on Homestead Road allows you to start your journey at a more secluded part of the park.

Weekend Brunch at Lively Station, a locally owned restaurant on River Road South just a short bike ride or drive from Minto Brown.

After washing up and getting dressed, I recommend checking out Salem on the Edge art gallery, another locally owned establishment specializing in Oregon artists in downtown Salem.

Just For Kids!

The IRONKIDS Fun Run will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at Riverfront Park. It offers youth the excitement and engagement, not the competition, of the Ironman experience and is aimed at age 17 and younger. Cost is $25 and includes a t-shirt, medal, goodie bag and race bib. Sign up at ironman.com/im703-oregon

We asked. They answered.

We asked a few of our favorite people to tell us "what's your 'must do' Salem reccomendation?" and this is what they had to say...

As someone who has run the Ironman 70.3 Oregon, I understand the importance of a cold pre-or-post-race beer. Well, you’re in luck! The Salem area was once known as the “Hop Capital of the World”, producing hops for delicious beers across the globe. The Salem Brewery Blocks, near Salem Airport, hosts six breweries just blocks from one another. Start your journey at Ratchet Brewing for a diverse selection of craft beers and motor-themed brewery environment. Then head to For Tomorrow We Die to enjoy delicious food paired with unique brews and extraordinary ambiance. Next, explore the creative offerings at Shades of Brew, followed by a cozy stop at Sparky's Brewing Company. Don't miss the familyfriendly environment at Gilgamesh Brewing and wrap up your tour with the English-inspired beers of Santiam Brewing. Each spot offers a welcoming atmosphere perfect for unwinding after

Spectators Welcome!

Gather. Watch. Cheer! Spectators are welcome to cheer on the athletes. The start of the mass swim is one moment of excitement, but fanfare from the sidelines is a good morale booster during other parts of the race, too. Athletes are expected to cross the finish line at Riverfront Park between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the majority finishing between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Some parts of the race are more interesting than others and there will be downtimes when not much seems to be happening, so plan your day accordingly. Also, remember to dress for the weather and wear sunscreen...and bring water and snacks, too.

Our first stop is for coffee at Archive (love the vibe!). Then we’ll wander around Aunt Bee’s or take a tour at Chomp Chocolate (local chocolate? Yes please!). A favorite spot for lunch is Wild Pear or we’ll enjoy happy hour at Pacific Standard; they’re perfect spots for local food and wine. If there’s time, we’ll wrap things up with an evening at the Elsinore or check out local art at Salem on the Edge.

IRONMAN RETURNS!

Volunteers Welcome, too!

IRONMAN events are only possible with the support of their volunteers. Local volunteer coordinator Moses Keener said they engage about 1,000 volunteers, who assist with many jobs from athlete check-in and the information desk to lifeguards and aid station support. You can volunteer solo or as a community group. Learn more and sign up at ironman.com/volunteer

My go-to must-do with friends in the summer includes sitting outside at Venti’s downtown or on the rooftop Basil & Board for drinks and food. The atmosphere and eats are equally satisfying. Then, head to Bush’s Pasture Park. It’s got great running and walking paths and open fields playing frisbee.

I’m also a big supporter of the food truck experience and we have two awesome pods here in Salem: The Yard Food Park and Beehive Station Food Truck Pod. Both often have live music on the weekends, too.

Notes (for Locals & Drivers & Travellers...& Everyone)

Several roads in Salem will be diverted during the race. Signs will be posted to notify drivers of the impacted areas and hours. The Peter Courtney Pedestrian Bridge connecting Riverfront and MintoBrown Island Parks will be closed to the public on July 21.

All three of us are huge fans of our downtown, starting with The Reed at its epicenter. Nearby is a cluster of three of our favorite places to run into friends, pick up a novel, and hit up some old-school pinball: GovCup, Book Bin, and Coin Jam. Not far from the downtown core are two places we love to browse vinyl and enjoy the vibes, Offbeat Coffee and Drum Bug. Our much-loved source of funky clothes and raucous basement shows is Blast Off! Vintage and a favorite hangout bar is f/stop Fitzgerald’s Public House.

To venture into nature, we love the expansiveness of Minto Island Park for walking, bike riding, and kayaking. Minto Island Growers is an amazing place for produce and to hang out in

If going downtown, give yourself extra time to travel and find parking. And don’t forget, carpooling is cool and you can park free all day in our downtown parking garages (Chemeketa, Liberty, Marion, etc.)

Brunch at Word of Mouth is a must! Get your name on the waitlist early because it's always busy, but the wait is worth every minute. The converted craftsman-style home makes for a cozy, charming dining experience and the food is truly next level. For mental stimulation and a memorable group experience, try Exitus Escape Rooms then head upstairs for a bite after at Fork Forty Food Hall (I recommend Chubby Bao House!) Speaking of Chubby Bao, the co-owner/my friend Joe Ngo is featured as the "mob boss" in the "Operation Takeout" themed escape room. Love a local business collab. We recently tried (and failed) to escape that room in

The Artist’s Eye: Selections from the Gary Westford Collection — Over the years, Salem artist and collector Gary Westford has donated numerous works of art to the permanent collection of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. Dennis Evans: Apocrypha explores the artistic accomplishments of this celebrated Seattle mixed media and performance artist. This exhibition chronicles Dennis’s artistic career from his early performances and installations of the 1970s and ‘80s to his autonomous works and collaborations with his wife, glass artist Nancy Mee, in the 1990s and 2000s. Emerging from contemporary art movements such as Dadaism and Fluxus and influenced by medieval documents and scientificallyinspired art, Dennis has created a diverse body of work that reflects his technical virtuosity, extraordinary imagination, and breadth of knowledge.

EVENTS — Dennis will give a free illustrated lecture on June 8, in the Paulus Lecture Hall, Willamette University College of Law, and will lead a walk-through tour of the exhibition, with his wife Nancy Mee, 12:30 p.m. June 11

Don Bailey: America Replated — Don Bailey, born in 1954, is a Hupa tribal member who was raised on the Hoopa Valley Reservation of California. A graduate of Western Oregon University and the University of Oregon, he taught art for 40 years at Chemawa Indian School, the oldest continually operating federal boarding school for Native students in America. From that vantage point, Don has witnessed the ways bureaucracy imposes itself upon native communities but also the ways irony and humor can be empowering in the face of that stranglehold.

Don’s America Replated works is a series of paintings which each began with an archival (late 19th century/early 20th century) black and white photograph of Native Americans. These photographs, taken by non-Native photographers, were presented to the public as “documents of a vanishing race.”

“I have re-contextualized the often static, sometimes staged portraits with layers of color, traditional native design and landscapes real and imagined. I aim to give the portraits of our ancestors a timelessness and, in the spirit of whil-xolik (storytelling), invite the viewers of my work to consider the lives of people who have never vanished.”

Opening Reception — 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26

Radius 25 is a juried exhibition showcasing 25 artists residing within a 25-mile radius of Salem around the theme “What Matters.”

The Art of Tattoo is a window into six Salem artists who work with tattoo as an art form.

Footsteps & Monuments: Paige Wright

“My admiration for the human form manifests in my craft. Through the meticulous process of hand-building ceramic heads, I construct each piece, coil by coil, step by step. Gradually, a face emerges from the clay. Rather than aiming to replicate a specific person, I seek to uncover a plausible individual through the creative process...These portrait sculptures serve as commemorative placeholders for the human body and the forces that have shaped it.”

Through June 30

Past is Present: Don Bailey — “In my native Hoopa language, kiwhliw means ‘he who paints.’ First and foremost, I am a painter. I create complex, richly colorful compositions. I am also Native American, born on the Hoopa Valley Reservation in Northern California. Indian Land, where the past is always present, is where my paintings begin.”

July 5 through August 25

The Art of Drag — Co-curated by Jessica Rehfield-Griffith and lead consultant RiRi Calienté of the House of Calienté, this exhibit explores the artistic nature of drag, the people, the costume, the performance, the lifestyle, through interviews, confessionals, performances and more. (See events on page 29)

Material Girl | Kay Worthington — This exhibition looks back from the platform of age to see the coherence in the artist’s eye. A love of clothing and fashion, color and combinations – especially unlikely ones – has always been a part of what delights Kay's eye and sets her in motion as an artist. Featured artist Sarah Ciampa is a still life painter who puts a new definition in detail. Her use of unconventional objects for her paintings make you stop and think, what story is being told? “My newest work, the Re-Present series, takes a visual scene and re-presents it through a central painting with companion pieces that are based on parts of the central painting but focusing on different parts, sometimes represented very much the same as the central painting and sometimes changed in subtle ways.”

Guest artist Patti McNutt paints almost daily, mainly still life and plein air, as part of her artistic practice, informing her work with authenticity of form, color and composition as well as the joy found from observing the surrounding world. Opening Reception: 5 to 8 p.m. June 7

It means having the right to selfdetermination, and standing in community to advocate for our acceptance, safety, and understanding...Creating safe spaces for marginalized artists to build community and a strong support network is important and life-changing.

July 31 through August 31

Featured artist Zackery McRae — “Behold! Accretions of thought and time excavated intuitively by compulsive hands working delicately to brush each artifact out of the ether. The spaces stitched into the surfaces emit planes bulging to challenge laws of capacity, and faces both sallow and transfigured by spirits of long inhabitance. The world within comes out to refract back and hijack all automatic factories of free form feelings.”

Guest artist Craig Klyver — “I work small and am always responding to what the pen does, where it goes and what kind of shapes or lines that it makes. In this series, I've tried to make pieces that draw the viewer in. I don't have any overriding philosophy, meaning, message or problem that I am either demonstrating or solving. If they exist, those concepts are for each viewer to discern. There are no intentional visual metaphors. I just like to draw.”

Ben Folds

Prepare your papercraft skills, Emmynominated singer/songwriter/composer Ben Folds is bringing his Paper Airplane Request Tour to Salem and audience members will have the chance to request songs by throwing a paper airplane at him during the show. "The last time I did this on tour the response was overwhelming, with literally hundreds of paper airplanes with song requests being launched on cue from fans at the start of the second half of each of my concerts. It’s the purest, most low-tech form of engagement that creates a special bond with my audiences.”

THEATRE 33: NEW PLAY SUMMER

Theatergoers, art lovers, entertainment enthusiasts — rejoice. Theatre 33's aims to bring a season of new plays, new experiences and new opportunities to our community this summer.

While Theatre 33 fills a gap for audience entertainment bringing performance to the stage locally, the nonprofit is filling a need for playwrights, too, thanks to their dedication to new play development and first play production.

“There is no other workshop like this festival. What happens at Theatre 33 is a very special development process. The amount of rehearsal time is luxurious. The talented, engaged actors dig into the script. The director has the time to let them go deep and play. There’s a thoughtful dramaturg with whom you can toss around ideas and challenges. And there’s a creative technical team ready to use their skills to evoke the world of the play,” said playwright Evelyn Pine.

“What an incredible 23 days I spent with Theatre 33…I have never felt so well supported, or so productive as a writer. This has truly been one of the best theatre experiences of my life,” said playwright Nora Douglass.

32 | pressplaysalem.com | summer 2024

One of the most challenging obstacles a playwright will face, said Executive Director Thomas Nabhan, is getting their new play produced. “...most theaters don't want to take the financial risk of producing a play no one has heard of. This fear is mostly a Western geographical phenomenon because there are scores of new play festivals and theaters that produce new plays in the East. At least 10 in NYC alone.”

In 2022, the 15 largest theaters in Oregon produced only four new plays outside Theatre 33, added Tom. “In Oregon, there are just a handful of companies who develop and/or produce new work.”

Through 10 seasons, Theatre 33 has produced 45 new plays from 33 different northwest playwrights.

“We choose plays that are not finished, but not too raw — plays that a full production would be of optimal benefit. We hire a professional writer (dramaturg) to work with each playwright, lodge playwrights in Salem so they can attend all production meetings, 60 hours of rehearsals, and all performances. Throughout the whole process, playwright with dramaturg help engage in rewrites. Audiences also help with feedback after each performance,” said Tom.” The goal at the end of the production is to finish the play or get it much closer to completion.”

FRONT ROW

Now in season 11 the company is adding three more plays and three popups to its resume.

“What we do is vital because the art depends on the infusion of new work. And since we only produce new plays by northwest playwrights who often feature Oregon and northwest themes, culture, and history, this infusion of new work also infuses the body of art with northwest art,” said Tom.

“We believe the potential demand for new art is as strong in the west as it is in the northeast. It just needs to be developed.”
