ave you ever come to a point in your life where you just do not have enough energy to make time for things? I'm there. Actually, I've been there for a really long time. Wanting to find the answer to my dilemma, I started consuming contents related to that topic. In addition, I followed my curiosity by doing things that interested me. Being too lazy to make changes in your life is the worst excuse – and excuses take a lot of time – you have to create them, repeat them until you believe them and then use them in all the areas you'd otherwise be getting better at. So I stopped and made a change. Nobody wants to wake up with regrets. Nobody. That’s something I used to contemplate all the time. Change is one thing we can roll into action – even though sometimes it’s inevitable from the start. What

we can do is control how we deal with the changes we’re faced with in our daily lives. Everyone likes staying in his or her comfort zone. After all, they call it a “comfort” zone for a reason – even the term itself stirs up deep feelings of calm, relaxation and security. Change comes in a variety of sizes, shapes and flavours. Change happens to us all – it’s simply a part of life. Without the discomfort of change we will stand stagnant, to our own detriment. I believe that we should enter 2020 as a year of self-growth and meaningful change. As creators we have the power to give meaning and value to anything we want to manifest into our reality. At Prestige Magazine, the door is ever changing. I promise it will continue opening up to something much better that will always lead to an adventure. Carly Bailey Natasen

Alpine EAGLE REBIRTH OF AN ICON
ontemporary, refined and assertive, the new Alpine Eagle sports chic timepiece collection is a state-of-the-art reinterpretation of the St. Moritz, the first watch created in 1980 by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, now co-president of Chopard. Imagined and personally designed by him, Alpine Eagle is driven by his passion for the Alps and by the lofty power of the eagle that reigns supreme there. Crafted from an exclusive, ultraresistant and light-reflecting metal named Lucent Steel A223, it beats to the rhythm of a Chopard chronometer-certified movement. Bearing testament to Chopard’s ethical approach, Alpine Eagle gives the Maison an opportunity to reveal its new commitment to protecting the Alpine environment through the launch of the Eagle Wings Foundation - of which Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is founding member. Alpine Eagle is dedicated to contemporary eagles, the aspiring men who outperform in their daily lives and whose vision inspires and elevates. With foresight and determination, they act on the challenges of tomorrow and are innately aware of the importance of environmental issues.

A GENTLEMEN STORY While vision is essential to running a family Maison, it is perseverance and determination that lead to success. Such was the path taken by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele in 1980, when he presented his very first watchmaking project. As a youthful 22-year-old employee in the family Manufacture at the time, he submitted an idea to his father for a watch to be named St. Moritz. A project with a resolutely coming of age dimension, within which a young man asserts himself, spreads his wings and takes flight. The first sports watch from the Maison as well as the first timepiece made of steel in its workshops, the St. Moritz was profoundly innovative for Chopard, then a specialist in gold and diamond-set gold watches. It represented a real and carefully calculated risk. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele made it a success that was

to become one of the Maison’s bestsellers for the next decade. Since then, he has become co-president of Chopard and taken on many other challenges. He was one of the first to sense the strength of the bonds between passionate enthusiasts of the automobile world and of watchmaking mechanics. It was he who set Chopard on the path of its now legendary partnership with the Mille Miglia race. In 1996, he decided to restore Haute Horlogerie to the place it deserved by founding Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier. In the same pioneering mode, it was on the same site in Fleurier that Chopard’s co-president had premises built, complete with the Minergie label certification criteria, thereby paving the way for sustainable luxury. With Alpine Eagle, history is repeating itself, since it was at the insistence of his son Karl-Fritz, secretly supported by his grandfather Karl, that Karl-Friedrich Scheufele looked into the updating of the St. Moritz. At first reluctant, he was won over by his son’s strength of conviction, just as he himself had been able to win his father’s support 40 years ago. NATURE, THE PREMIER ARTISAN Drawing on his creative strength and his passion for the Alps, but also on Louis Sullivan’s principles of harmony which dictate that “form follows function”, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has created a new collection: Alpine Eagle. Belonging to the select circle of watches with an integrated case and bracelet, this timepiece presents a design that is both refined and contemporary, featuring a wealth of references to the Alpine eagle and its biotope. Its rock-like textured dial evoke an eagle’s iris, its hands call to mind the raptor’s feathers and the cold glinting steel is reminiscent of glaciers. The gently tapered Alpine Eagle bracelet comprises a single ingotshaped link, topped by a raised central cap. The case is distinguished by a protrusion protecting the crown engraved with a compass rose, an instrument that has helped adventurers find their way since ancient times. Today, it becomes the emblem of contemporary eagles capable of choosing the right direction in the pursuit of their destiny. Alpine Eagle’s round bezel is punctuated by eight screws, grouped in pairs at the four cardinal points. Their PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY
Belonging to the select circle of watches with an integrated case and bracelet, this timepiece presents a design that is both refined and contemporary slots are set at a tangent to the circle of the bezel, a sign of high-quality finishing and sophisticated aesthetic purpose. These screws also serve a technical function by guaranteeing the water resistance of the watch to 100 metres. All Alpine Eagle’s flat surfaces are satin-brushed, a finish carefully crafted to create light effects further enhanced by polished chamfers. The hours and minutes hands, like the hour-markers, are coated with SuperLumiNova® Grade X1 to enhance nocturnal legibility. Like the snow, torrents and rock of the Alps that
inspired Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and change their appearance according to the light conditions, Alpine Eagle constantly alternates between polished and matt finishes. Issued from the time of its launch in ten references in steel, gold, bi-material or diamond-set gold, Alpine Eagle is a particularly rich collection, available in unisex models in two different 41 mm and 36 mm diameters. LUCENT STEEL A223: AN ALCHEMIST’S QUEST To bring the Alpine Eagle purpose
to life, Chopard has created a new material that is as rich, precious and complex as gold, transforming the dream of Renaissance alchemists into glowing reality. Lucent Steel A223 is a steel resulting from a re-smelting process featuring three unique characteristics. On the one hand, thanks to its hypoallergenic composition, Lucent Steel A223 has properties comparable to surgical steel, making it highly dermo-compatible. On the other hand, this alloy with its 223 Vickers’ strength is 50% more resistant to abrasion than conventional steels and has a unique hardness. Finally, with its superior homogeneous crystal structure, its purity enables it to reflect light in a unique way. Like diamond, whose brilliance depends on the lowest degree of impurities, this innovative steel has far less impurities than conventional steel, guaranteeing it brilliance and brightness comparable to that of gold. The industrialisation of this new alloy, which required no less than four years of research and development to produce, was a real challenge to manufacture to extremely strict specifications, significantly increasing its manufacturing time as well as wear and tear on machining tools. Lucent Steel A223 is now a rare and extraordinarily precious metal, stemming from a very complex development and manufacturing process.
the making of its case and bracelet, whether in steel and/or gold. EAGLE WINGS Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is a hiking and skiing enthusiast who finds inspiration and serenity in the high altitudes of Switzerland, which open his eyes, clear his mind and initiate action. Sensitive to Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan’s initiative, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele joined the Alp Action programme in the 2000s. Today, in unveiling his new Alpine Eagle collection, whose design bears the imprint of nature’s influence,
he sought to associate this collection with a new sustainable approach. The co-president of Chopard has thus become founding member of the newly formed Eagle Wings Foundation. This innovative and multidisciplinary environmental project – designed to raise awareness and galvanise the public with respect to the importance, beauty and fragility of Alpine biotopes – will offer a new vision of the Alps through the eyes of human beings, satellites as well as the eagle – the latter being especially renowned for its piercing gaze.

A MANUFACTURE-MADE MOVEMENT True to Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s deep commitment to fine watchmaking, the two movements with automatic winding embedded in the heart of Alpine Eagle watches have been developed in Chopard’s watchmaking workshops and chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Control – a rare event for watches in this category. Alpine Eagle 41 mm thus welcomes the 01.01-C calibre with a 60-hour power reserve, while the 36 mm models host the 09.01-C calibre with a 42-hour power reserve – with the latter 8-ligne movement being one of the smallest to receive COSC certification. Both are visible through a transparent sapphire crystal back. Thanks to its vertically integrated production process, Chopard has produced and assembled all Alpine Eagle components in-house, from all the components of its movements to

TOURBILLON back to the belle époque in Paris. Lange’s first centennial tourbillon – still in a pocket watch format – attracted global attention at the 1900 Paris Exposition. In 2010, as part of the “165 Years – Homage to F.A. Lange” anniversary collection, the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON was one of the first three watches of the manufactory with a case in honey gold, a material used exclusively by Lange. When the LANGE 1 celebrated its 20th birthday in 2014, it was introduced as the fourth model of the HANDWERKSKUNST series in a limited edition of 20 platinum-cased watches with rare movement decorations and a black enamel dial. After negotiating with the major German marques, Audi Experience came up with a bespoke offering that suited the needs and wishes of all of the members, myself included. The timing was cleverly picked for early September too, when the roads are quieter but the weather is still comfortable, before the fall sets in. The trip entailed flying into Munich, where we spent the leisurely afternoon sightseeing. The motor museums and installations, like Welt, were a highlight. The next morning we were whisked off to Audi’s Neuberg driving experience track, for a day spent enjoying the R8 coupÊs. Neuberg is a world-class facility with no expense spared to entertain and train clients in the handling and use of their cars. The day began with simpler handling demonstrations on segments of the track and the skid pan, but evolved to full track laps. I have new-found respect for the R8 and the way these cars, in their various incarnations, have developed into everyday supercars. The following day it was back to Munich International Airport, where Audi has another experience centre, and collected six beautiful identical yellow R8 Spyders, each kitted out with all the bells and whistles. These R8s are used

able to comfortably overtake for the duration of our journey. Night-time saw us arrive at the inviting Interalpen-Hotel, which is located in the Tyrol mountains near Seefeld (at an altitude of 1 300m), a popular resort of choice for locals and foreigners alike. With a reputation for great food and even greater service, it was an idyllic resting spot after a long day on the roads. The five-star family-owned hotel is bedecked in wood; the rooms are extremely spacious, larger than any room I have ever stayed in before, which makes sense when you think about the sheer size of ski gear and equipment. The hotel has received several accolades for its culinary offering, which is no surprise with six dining areas and two bar areas to choose from. The following morning we awoke after a blissful rest, ready for a further drive out to the top of the Alps to visit the Top Mountain Museum, which is home to an admirable collection of almost 1000 bikes and some really special cars. The museum collection, owned by twin brothers, is set to expand with the

for the very unique driving experiences that Audi tailor-makes for owners as part of the Audi Experience programme. The team at Audi were extremely helpful in creating a one-of-a-kind experience for our Vega club members, which perfectly dovetailed with other elements of our itinerary. Our trip was to journey up into the Austrian Central Alps, with large sections of autobahns intermingled with several mountain passes. We had chosen to do the rest of our trip in mid-October, which the Audi team was quick to point out was risky for that leg with strong chances of snowfall at that time, but we were lucky that the weather played along, enabling us to keep the rooftops down most of the time. The open autobahns were also not busy at all given the time of the year, so we were able to cruise at well over 200 kph for many stretches. On the mountain passes, we engaged confidently thanks to the recent prep and training, which gave us a better feel for the cars’ capabilities. The R8 felt like it was made for these mountains. I was never uneasy; with plenty of horsepower underfoot, we were

acquisition of additional pieces, which warrants building an entirely new wing. The Timmelsjoch Road – that connects Austria to Italy – took our driving experience to the next level. On our way back we passed through the highest village in Austria and found some of the narrowest little pass roads ever – with great surfaces they made for some more amazing driving. When the tour drew to a close we flew across to Frankfurt and were PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY
shuttled to Nürburgring for our track experience, which we did with RSR racing. For those who don’t know, the “ring” somehow has become the proving ground for a manufacturer to demonstrate the mettle of their metal. Record times have been posted over the years, where production cars are put through their paces on a 20.8km track called the Nordschleife, which has umpteen turns and changing surfaces. More affectionately it is referred to as
‘Green Hell’ given its setting in the forest. The Ring is effectively a toll road and anything from a Fiat Uno to a Caravelle could be on the track at the same time. Our track experience day was disappointingly wet and we were advised (in other words, coerced) into downgrading our cars from the BMW M4 to BMW 120 xDrive and Golf Rs, as four-wheel drive traction was needed. The statement made by the instructor during the briefing was that in the wet there is 80% less grip and that the wet line is totally opposite the dry line – basically the paths that we take in the wet with the most grip are totally different to how we would drive in dry weather conditions. He was not kidding. The only benefit of the rain was that it deterred a lot of drivers and we had long stints of driving without encountering traffic. Still, as a driver, the Ring is one for the bucket list, and the Vega group got to tick it off! Personally, I’ll definitely be back for a dry stint. Having driven most of the best roads in South Africa and now having organised and experienced the driving experience in Germany, I must say I am hooked. If planned and done correctly it is a great value-for-money experience. Next year’s plan is through into Italy via the Alps, focused on museums and a track experience at Spa – I can’t wait!

he fashion industry has been placed under severe scrutiny over the past few years for playing a major role in world pollution. Several documentaries, such as True Cost, River Blue and Alex James: Slowing Down Fast Fashion, delved into the ugly truth behind one of the world’s most profitable industries. The sudden interest in exposing the retailers behind these crimes led to movements forming, urging the fashion industry to change their ways. A few large retailers were up for the challenge, launching ‘going green’ campaigns and making promises to invest money in more environmentally friendly processes. However, the problem does not only lie in the way clothing is made, but what follows afterwards. In July 2018, a luxury brand caused outrage when it burned up to £30 million worth of stock in an effort to protect the brand’s exclusivity. Co-founder and creative director of Fashion Revolution, Carry Somers, says landfills and burning of products is fashion’s “dirtiest open secret”. Research by the Ellen MacArthur foundation showed that global clothing production is increasing at a rapid rate. Clothing items are being worn less, discarded sooner and the demand for recycled items is declining. Boston Consulting Group’s latest report on Pulse of the Fashion Industry Update 2019 states: “The pace of sustainability progress in the fashion industry has slowed by a third in the past year and is not moving fast enough to counterbalance the harmful impact of the fashion industry’s rapid growth.” Bottom line: due to fast fashion, landfills are growing and not decomposing fast enough. Hemp. A plant that has been falsely classified for years as an illegal drug, due to it being a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species. It’s not only one of the fastest growing plants, but was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fibre, 10 000 years ago. The process of field-to-factory has proven to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly than synthetic fibres and a good alternative to cotton. Yet cotton is responsible for 26% of the worldwide fibre consumption, where hemp and linen only account for 5%. Hemp is one of the most durable natural fibres on the planet, with an extremely low environmental impact. On top of that, it is also highly biodegradable, due to the fact that it’s derived from plants and requires little processing. Still, hemp has struggled over the years to find a foothold in the fashion industry. The fibre was viewed as forbidden in the United States since the 70s, but in 2018 the US opened its doors to hemp cultivation. Well-known brands and designers started flirting with hemp. A few brands immediately saw the value of hemp fibres and its ability to make clothes more durable and breathable. Could hemp be the answer to fashion sustainability and, if so, why is it not used more often by retailers and designers? The main reason for hemp’s underutilisation in the fashion industry stems from the way it was discredited in the early 30s, due to its association with marijuana. By the time this fallacy was rectified, more profitable textile manufacturing was being used and the fashion industry was a slave to fast fashion. Clothes made from hemp are extremely durable, meaning items last longer, leading to consumers making fewer purchases. Hemp therefore does not fit into today’s fast fashion model of continuous consumption. Apart from that, retailers found that the fibre has also proven to be somewhat difficult to work with, especially when trying to replicate the soft touch of cotton fabrics. Nevertheless, a generation of new designers and brands is on the rise. Former Project Runway contestant, designer Korto Momolu, made her message clear – she sent a 26-piece hemp, jute, linen and cork collection down the runway at New York Fashion Week, proving that fashion has no boundaries when it comes to sustainability. In March 2019, Levi Strauss & Co debuted a pair of jeans – in collaboration with the Outerknown label – that was made from a cotton-hemp blend, giving it a pure cotton feel. Designers worldwide are seeing the benefits of hemp as more and more research is being published, proving it’s not the enemy it’s been made out to be. Hemp certainly has a bright future in fashion, holding the potential of closing the fashion sustainability loop from fibre to fragment.

ontext offers a reinterpretation of classics, a new perspective on a common language of clothing. The Prada Resort 2020 collection presents an alternative viewpoint on the familiar, a seditious simplicity. A contrast with the increased complexity of the world, pulling back to the sincere, pure and true, the collection proposes an unexpected means of subversion, elegance as sedition.

A language of hyper-classicism is recalibrated, forming a different syntax. Clothes are paradigmatic - overcoats, brassbuttoned blazers, eased skirts, cable knit sweaters, utility suiting. Outfits are composed of singular, honest fabric types: cotton poplins, drill and gabardine, faille, leather and suede. Patterns are modest pinstripes and checks, micropattern florals and embroideries of truly naĂŻf flowers. The palette is restrained, revolving around navy, pale blue, multichromatic brights, tonal hues. There are gestures to archetypes of elegance, real glamour.
Scarves are executed like boas of paillettes, and jewelry comprises drop earrings and sautoirs of baroque pearls. The collection is focused on intimacy - on closeness, attention drawn to details, a sense of the handmade. These evoke the idea of the individual, its power and strength. Shifting contexts open ideas to reinterpretation, to suggestive dichotomies - rich and humble, youth versus heritage, urbanity against nature, uptown and downtown. The context of New York City imbues garments with specific cultural memory, offering a distinct perspective paradoxical to their universality.

etween these two cities, which have always been symbolic of metropolitan style, an eclectic and smart collection found its inspiration. The Fall/Winter 201920 collection presents a trip through the 70s that sees tartan – the iconic and traditional fabric of northern Europe – packed in the suitcases before setting out from the United Kingdom. In different colours and uses, fabrics and techniques, Scottish tartan is a distinctive feature of the Luisa Spagnoli winter collection this year, offering outfits full of geometric vigour – from sweaters to blouse dresses; from skirts to coats. Skirts, ultra-feminine for all occasions, are the star items this season. Whether it be mini or longuette, flared, tartan or patent leather, flowing thanks to pleats or in a boxy shape à la Mary Quant, this garment is the perfect solution for any wardrobe dilemma. Knitwear, the maison’s pride and joy, takes on a new look – more informal and casual, thanks to the new volumes and knit pattern of the polo necks, gilets and long cardigans. The knitted mock polo neck with puffball sleeves is also ideal for a more playful look. The influence of Brit fashion can be easily glimpsed behind the diamond-shaped geometric pullovers with sequin details, matched with long skirts in boyish fabrics. Winter is full of colour at Luisa Spagnoli, as women can express their joie de vivre with a wonderful palette including brilliant pink and violet, as well as the vitality of yellow, pumpkin orange and bright red. And so, every day is greeted with a lively and pure palette, occasionally matched up with neutral hues like camel, grey, black or sapphire blue. Creativity emerges in absolute liberty thanks to daring combinations of materials, colours and different weighted layers and cuts, playing with the feminine form with grace and witty sophistication. The Luisa Spagnoli working woman conquers masculine fabrics like pinstripe, tweed and houndstooth for herself, thanks to the tailored effect that creates sartorial coats and trousers, and jackets with a feminine air in perfectly calibrated proportions, mixed with loose

extra-long belted version, or in violet boiled wool matched up with corduroy velvet trousers. The version in black is ultra-chic in eco-friendly faux fur with a martingale belt at the back. But it’s the patent leather, along with leather, that’s making a shock appearance in this season’s looks, such
as the fire-engine red puffer jackets and simple trench coats, which really hint at what’s to come in the next decade. Thus, the collection bursts with metal-effect outfits, designed to amaze and charm – like the laminated silk shirts, the puffer jackets or the tops and jackets decorated with mini-

sequins, which illuminate the city streets and nightlife. When day fades into evening, light becomes key and velvet becomes the star, soft to the touch, gentle and warm. Silk-blend velvet, thanks to its wonderful sheen, is offered in the shades of cherry red, wine red, and elegant sapphire blue, in the widelegged trouser suits, the printed velvet devoré mini-dresses, and bon ton dresses with puffball sleeves. And there’s more – lots of embroidered tulle, taffeta, jacquard organza and lace in the evening dresses, ideal for a red carpet look or, when downplayed with a double-breasted black jacket, perfect to wear from morning to evening. A key item in this collection is the hat, here a distinctive icon of style, sparkling with personality and energy. The baker boy beret comes straight out of small Parisian boutique windows to complete the look with a touch of creative fantasy. Borrowed from the men’s wardrobe, this wide-brimmed cap gives an air of mystery in a game of dressing up as la garçonne. Subtle style accessories, the sequinned minibasques match the sparkly scarves in georgette from the tuxedo-style suits, for a high-society evening. The collection’s extremely feminine character reaches its climax in the bags. The Luisa bag, innovative in shape and refined in details, stands out for its original dual function – it can be worn over the shoulder, for practical and handy use, or carried as a handbag. Designed in mini and maxi versions, it’s ideal for every moment of the day: while Luisa is perfect for a walk in the city or at work, Baby Luisa is a little treasure chest that looks great for the evenings. Another must-have item of the collection is Mati, a shoulder bag from the Perugia maison that excels in leather buffing, for results that are as smooth and impalpable as silk, with meticulous attention to detail. “In designing the new collection, I imagined a journey through the 70s, starting from London and heading towards Paris, two cities which for me symbolise metropolitan style, eclectic and elegant. Next season’s Luisa Spagnoli looks for women, while remaining always feminine and modern, will play with a mixture of unusual fabrics and combinations, sometimes inspired by menswear, for a decidedly colourful winter!”

FEAST AT A FAMILY TABLE Travel surveys show that 70% of travellers today want a cultural experience during their 2020 travels. And why wouldn’t you? Much of the joy of travel comes from experiencing another culture. Local cuisine is a delicious place to start and experiential, authentic travel is easy with a specialist travel company. Teresa Richardson, Managing Director of the Travel Corporation in South Africa, the parent company of awardwinning guided holiday brand Trafalgar, says: “Culinary tourism is a big part of the experiential travel we crave today. Ten years ago, in the lemon groves of Sorrento,

he fizz of Prosecco and a hint of salt from prosciutto still lingers on my taste buds. One never forgets that first taste of gelato each summer or watching the sunset over the Italian Riviera every evening. However, the real highlight that still lingers is that homecooked meal tucked away in Isola Tiberina, a tiny island in Rome’s Tiber River. Even if it’s your umpteenth visit, there’s just something about Italy that’s hard to beat. Just don’t make the mistake of only ticking off the tourist icons along Italy’s welltrodden tourist paths. Here are some of the experiences you can’t miss on your 2020 Italian getaway:

Italy, Trafalgar pioneered this type of experience with its first Be My Guest activity. Guests met the Esposito sisters and joined them for a Tuscan lunch in their home. It was a huge hit and the beginning of the immersive culinary travel trend that’s become so popular.” Today, Be My Guest experiences feature on each Trafalgar itinerary, including the brand’s eight new trips and six new destinations introduced for 2020. Even in bustling Rome, which welcomes a staggering four million tourists per year, authentic experiences aren’t hard to come by. Not far from tourist hotspot Capitoline Hill is the tiny island of Isola Tiberina. It is a calm oasis, and the only island in the Tiber River that runs through Rome. Measuring a slim and trim 1620m2 (no larger than two football fields), Isola Tiberina is home to a handful of Roman residents. Living on Isola Tiberina, Fabio welcomes Trafalgar guests for an exclusive culinary experience – into his apartment for drinks before a traditional dinner at a historical site. You’ll feast on Prosecco and Saltimbocca alla Romana (veal escalope topped with prosciutto and sage, sautéed in a white wine sauce, served with roast rosemary potatoes). Or, if you’re in the mood for pasta, try the Pasta all’ Amatriciana, a traditional dish made from tomatoes, pork cheek and pecorino cheese. And, of course, there’s plenty of the perfect sweet treat: homemade tiramisu. TRAVEL BEYOND ROME FOR MORE MOUTHWATERING TREASURES. In the UNESCO World Heritage town of Alberobello, in the heel of Italy’s ‘boot’, Trafalgar visits the quirky trulli, which are conical white stone huts with thatched roofs. It’s the Italian equivalent of an African rondavel. Here, make sure you lunch with a local. “Signor Luciano is a sixthgeneration farmer from the Alberobello farm,” Richardson explains. “You’ll get to sample Pugliese cuisine, typical of southern Italy, with almonds, cherries, tomatoes, olive oil and almond juice fresh from the farm used in many of the dishes.” Even Italy’s famous lakes offer off-the-beaten-path dining experiences for the discerning traveller. Try the island of Isola Madre in Lake Maggiore. Trafalgar guests have it all to themselves during a meal with Signor Telli at his family-run restaurant on the island. “The island really comes to life with Signor Telli’s tales of local pirates and princes,” comments Richardson.
CROSS BOUNDARIES It may seem strange to travel outside of the country when planning an Italian holiday, but you’ll discover even more Italian spirit just across the border. Sicily features prominently on many 2020 travel trends watchlists, but is still relatively unknown. Situated near the toe of the Italian ‘boot,’ it is advisable to go now, while it’s still off the radar. An hour from the Italian border, Nice, France, has been the playground of socialites and discerning travellers for centuries. Even though it’s in France, the area has strong Italian roots. Up until the late 1800s, Nice actually belonged to the House of Savoy, an Italian kingdom. You’ll find plenty of Italian influence in the architecture, especially in the Old Town. Strolling through the city with a local guide is the best way to learn about the intriguing mix of French and Italian influences in modern-day Nice. The brightly-painted buildings are an Instagrammer’s dream. And, if you can resist the call of the beach, head to the medieval hilltop town of Saint-Paulde-Vence, where cafés spill out onto sun-dappled cobblestone streets.

DIVE INTO CULTURE WITH LOCAL GUIDES Back in Italy, the hilltop village of Dolceaqua beckons. The village is something of a hidden gem and is an enjoyable day-trip from the busy Ligurian coast. Monet visited several times to paint the village’s bridge and castle, and you can walk across those same paths today. The area is famed for its olive oil and its Rossese wine. Dive into culture visiting an Italian agriturismo in the village of Rocchetta Nervina and savour the local flavours of the destination. Whether it’s distinctive regional delicacies or hidden gems you long to explore, La Dolce Vita, that sweet life, exists just off the beaten track in Italy.

icking off a bucket list item without the hassles that true camping presents. The idea of camping is terrifying, especially if you are not accustomed to it. Glamping (an amalgamation of glamorous and camping) combines the elements of a great safari with a luxurious setting, without giving up any creature comforts. Like little jewels placed along winding sand pathways, each of the gorgeous, tented suites commands a private space within the natural indigenous bushveld. Experiencing nature in safari-style tents offers great comfort and a luxurious ambience – luxury and nature has never felt so closely intertwined. The design of the lodge reflects decades of experience. With only twenty luxury tented suites, Safari Plains offers both seclusion and intimacy, and a real sense of escaping the city. Each tented suite features a signature wraparound deck with unimpeded bush views. Inside, all the amenities, such as sunken baths and oh-so-important air conditioning enable everyone to truly enjoy the camping experience, without the aggravations that we generally associate with it.

Safari Plains opened in December 2018. “Our purpose in opening Safari Plains was to develop a luxury, familyfriendly safari destination within easy reach of Johannesburg and Pretoria,” explains Cindy Sheedy Walker, CEO of Extraordinary. The success of Safari Plains can be attributed both to its inspired location in the shadow of the Waterberg Mountains, and to the attention to detail that has gone into every aspect of its construction and operation. The family suites feature a second bedroom so that parents can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that their kids are nearby, whilst still enjoying the privacy that is a hallmark of the Safari Plains experience. Innovative features include an outdoor sala, connected to each luxury tent by a raised walkway. Ideal for midday snacks, a bottle of wine and a siesta. These private covered spaces (my favorite spot for the weekend) continue the theme of luxury in a bush setting which is found throughout the lodge. There are various dining venues at Safari Plains and each sets the scene for a different theme. A tranquil ambience created with lanterns, the background sound of crickets and a canopy of stars makes the dining experience in the bush truly magical. Safari Plains has also gained plaudits for its ‘safari chic’ interior design. The bar, overlooked as it is by a mesmerising leopard portrait, has already attained iconic status.

eep in the Karoo Noorsveld lies a sanctuary atop a hill. Sky above, earth below and wide-open plains as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Sky Lodge, a literal oasis in the middle of nowhere. lodge is the type of place that strung-out city slickers, nature-obsessed twitchers and those accustomed to the finer things in life come to switch off and disconnect. The air is different in this part of the world. It definitely has something to do with the sheer number of Spekboom dispersed throughout the 25 000-hectare private reserve. Spekboom, one of many medicinal plants on the land, is a succulent that literally acts as a sponge for carbon
dioxide, able to absorb four to ten tons of CO2 from the atmosphere per hectare – ten times more effective than the Amazon rainforest. A reason to breathe deeply and sleep soundly, for sure. But the pure lavishness of the lodge has a lot to do with that too. With the accommodation personally imagined by Slovakian owners Erik and Alexandra Kovacs, and interior design and décor hand-selected – and sourced throughout South Africa – by Alexandra herself, the
personal touch is visible throughout. Earthy tones of brown and beige give the feeling of a connection to the surrounding nature, as do the textures of wood, wool and similar natural fibres. Big fireplaces in each reception room keep guests cosy from the sometimesfrosty temperatures of the great outdoors, while the infinity swimming pool is the ideal place to cool off when the mercury rises, and the expansive deck makes star-gazing a visceral experience. Thanks to mostly clear skies and no intrusion of city lights, this location offers some of the best starry nights in the country. A reason that Sky Lodge will soon introduce its astronomy hollow – a space that will protect from the elements and comfortably ensconce guests within, allowing them to lie back and marvel at the wonder of the night sky, no matter the weather. The Sky Spa offers indulgent massages and a unique selection of additional pampering treatments,
while the jacuzzi is open 24/7, with uninterrupted views over the savannah. The theme of luxury and comfort extend to each of the seven large suites, which are spacious, light-filled and equipped with all the modern amenities one would expect – from Nespresso machines to large flat-screen TVs (not that the latter is likely to be used much). While the reserve is home to many animals that locals and foreigners alike wish to seek out – rhino, lion, giraffe, buffalo, elephant – it’s the rarer creatures that will attract more discerning guests. Birdlife is prolific, and there are over 45 exotic and unusual species, including the golden, arabian, scimitar and painted oryx. Those who wish to explore the grasslands by night may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of elusive animals like the aardvark, lynx, porcupine, black-back jackal and bateared fox. However, Magic Hills does not wish to promote itself as a big five or safari
destination – animal encounters are a bonus. The reserve’s long-term plan is to rehabilitate the land (which was previously a hunting concession) and reintroduce endemic species; so while the offering may evolve as years go by, the priority now is restoring the reserve to the way nature intended. Future plans also include three additional accommodation offerings, each with their own unique pull, and spaced far enough apart that privacy and exclusiveness is always guaranteed. Working towards being completely offthe-grid within the next five years, the focus remains becoming less and less reliant on the precious environment. Sky Lodge is the ultimate escape to somewhere unlike anywhere else – here it is about enjoying the serenity of your surrounds; it’s a place for those who desire more than a holiday, but rather a once-in-a-lifetime journey. You’re not drawn here to see the nature, but rather to become one with it. In short, this is no ordinary safari – Magic Hills is a soul safari. he mighty Zambezi River has captured the hearts and minds of explorers for centuries. Now modern-day explorers can experience the area’s many wonders from the shores of an exclusive island safari getaway. Fringed by thick bush, there’s a tiny island on the Zambezi River that opens onto a cluster of ancient baobab trees. It’s the ideal habitat for a pair of resident Pels fishing owls and herds of elephants, that often wander over from the mainland to rest in the shade of the magnificent baobab and marula trees. Time stands still at Isibindi Africa Lodges’ newest addition, Tsowa Safari Island. In short, it’s the perfect bush escape for modern adventurers. Launched in August 2019, Tsowa Safari Island, is the group’s fourth property - the other three - Thonga Beach Lodge, Rhino Ridge and Kosi Forest Lodge, are on the east coast of Kwazulu-Natal. Secluded on a previously undeveloped island in the middle of the Zambezi River, Tsowa, which means “new beginnings”, is situated within the 55 000ha Zambezi National Park. While the island is remote, it’s surprisingly accessible; just 40km upstream from Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, and an hour and 20-minute land transfer from Victoria Falls Airport. Turning off the main tar road, you’re treated to a 20-minute game drive to the river’s edge (we saw our first herd of elephants within 10 minutes of entering the park) and then a two-minute hop by boat to your Tsowa Island oasis. The main camp with its six Livingstone-style stretch tents (12 beds), has been carefully positioned to blend into the bush and make the most of the stunning natural surroundings, whilst at the same time, minimising the impact on the environment. massive Jackalberry trees, the spacious living areas, overlook the Zambezi - two swimming pools offer relief and relaxation during the daylight hours, while the sunken firepit comes alive by night. Watch the lazy river glide by or view the abundant wildlife from every vantage point. Large buffalo and hippo herds are regular callers at the river’s edge in the afternoon. We also saw a cornucopia of antelope, bird-life, crocodiles, flora and so many elephants. Using the Island as our base, we explored a number of the area’s other attractions; morning game drives and guided walks in the Zambezi National Park; a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls and day trips to Chobe National Park are all easy to arrange. The town of Victoria Falls has had a resurgence in recent times and a surprising number of good coffee shops and restaurants, make it close enough for an enjoyable day trip to the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas but far enough to be able to return to the peace tranquility of the island, at the end of the day. Closer to camp, sunset river cruises, canoeing, island walks, fishing and starlit dinners are all part of the amazing Tsowa experience. As with the explorers of old, you will be bewitched by the ‘Island of new beginnings’.

In a tasteful sitting room, the Parlour, intriguing books on Thai art, architecture, history and food are neatly placed on low tables, next to potted orchids. Breakfast is served al fresco, or under red awnings, facing a canopy of venerable trees with waterlily-bedecked pools below. I delight in rising early, to be first at the breakfast buffet, to enjoy the artistic presentation. Although several food types are available, I choose Thai fare every time, in the process becoming fond of the piping hot dim sum, sticky rice, pork dishes and exotic Asian fruit. Delectable cappuccino, served by a polite waiter, is presented with a cinnamon stick as a spoon, which lends a delicate fragrance to the coffee. My favourite place is the 25-metrelong swimming pool, an oasis in dappled sunlight – large enough for me to have a decent training session – next to a seven-metre wall, covered by a green creeper. Sun loungers line the wooden deck, where fresh towels are provided. After a morning walk crossing a bridge over the Ping River, to take photographs at the Chinese market and meet some of the local people, I plunge into the pool again to cool down after being active in the warmth and humidity. Coconut milk served in the shell refreshes me further. Although there is much to see and do in Chiang Mai, I am lured back to my airconditioned suite to savour the amenities and feng shui decor, in black and white, with red accents. Indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a freestanding ball-and-claw bath poised on white tiles adorned with a blue pattern, form part of the aesthetic pleasures. The soap has a gentle jasmine and mint fragrance. I laze on the balcony of this secondfloor haven, gazing at leafy palms, as I sip top-quality tea and sample the dragonfruit left in my bedroom by an unobtrusive housekeeper. To my delight, I have my own butler – Pui-Panita Pimrat – an efficient and friendly Thai lady who spoils me by ironing my dresses, organising my dinner appointments, giving me information about places to visit, taking my sandal to a cobbler when it breaks and generally caring for me as a traveller. Pui arranges for my flights to be confirmed and for my luggage to be taken to my transport when I depart. All in all, I feel as if I have a personal assistant, who anticipates my needs, available 24 hours a day on her mobile phone. I have to resist falling asleep, as it is blissfully relaxing, but I don’t want to miss out on all the details. I am met with a welcome drink of iced Pandanus leaf juice and taken to a private room, where my feet are washed as I get comfortable. After my sublime experience, I have an indulgent time of recovery before my masseuse brings me lemongrass tea and fresh, chilled dates. In a soporific, sensual daze, I meander to my suite for iced mineral water and a nap. Each evening, homemade biscuits are left in my bedroom, presented on a black ceramic stand, as part of the turndown service. Attention to detail defines the 137 Pillars House experience. t has been known and stated for at least two and a half millennia that the impulsive desire to seek for that which is unavailable and the instinctual desire to avoid that which is unavoidable is the continuous source of human suffering. Like the search for monopoles within a magnet of any magnitude, our impulsive search for a one-sided reality or outcome will become a lesson in utter futility - for, freedom is equally and simultaneously paired with constraint and reward with the price of service. Equanimity within and equity without is Nature’s way of calling us to expanded greatness. But, to inwardly appreciate the necessity of all such complementary pairs of opposites is to liberate us from constraints of our Id and animal like behavior. From the ancient teachings of the Buddha to the more recent transcendental principles of Ralph Waldo Emerson, this compensatory message has been sustained in the minds and hearts of the wise men and women for centuries. Just as our genetic code consists of complementary opposite strands of gendered DNA to carry out our embryonic development from our single cell beginnings to our many specialized cells today and just as our physical body demands an autonomic and metabolic balance of anabolism and catabolism as well as mitosis and apoptosis to continue to evolve, adapt and grow, so too, do our lives require the pairs of complementary opposites to continue to achieve and fulfill our most meaningful aims. Within each of us is a yearning to make a difference and to contribute to the world in our own unique way while fulfilling some meaningful cause that inspires us to some level of greatness. In pursuit of this unique mission we repeatedly become confronted by various pairs of complementary opposites, living within us and existing around us, whether they be the pairs of support and challenge, ease and difficulty, pleasure and pain, or the labels of hero or villain, good or bad, and virtuous or vicious, each pair becomes our essential and constant companion along our journey of transformation and achievement. When we live congruently with our most important values and highest priorities and are therefore purposeful, mindful and resilient, such complementary opposites are recognized and wisely viewed as our essential and synchronous companions. We embrace them whole heartedly and see them as our feedback loops to authenticity and continuous

concentric expansion. When we are feeling impulsive and polarized we view these pairs as sources of frustration and angst. We are constantly being lead to appreciate the complementary pairs within and around us. From the pairs of opposites in business management of over-worker and underworker and the empowered and entitled employees to the pairs existing within family, social and economic dynamics, these complementary opposites reign true to our daily and living existence. Whether they be the nomadic wanderer and traveler and the homebound, the risking ambitious and the over cautious, or the extrovert and the introvert these pairs keep our journey inspiring and enlivening. Maximum growth and development occurs at the border of order and disorder and the boundary of

any such pair of opposites. The more we seek the one side within the pair the more the other finds and follows us. If we seek control we find ourselves in events that curiously overwhelm us. Just as we do not need to get rid of half of our lives to be fulfilled, so to we do not need to get rid of one side of life’s balanced equation to fulfill our most meaningful aims. Our purpose calls us beyond the pairs into greater and integrated actions more than reactions and wisdom more than illusive folly. Maybe it is wise for us all to reflect deeply upon the synthesis and synchronicity of all complementary opposites that continuously provide us with our inspiring existence. Love has been considered just such an integrated pair and when we awaken to its presence within, we feel grateful for the day. Could the very message that our intuition is forever revealing to us be this essential balance and symmetry of nature. wisely it brings us to the truth of the center where we are neither proud, nor shamed, only inspired and our most authentic selves. Yes, it is these many pairs of complementary opposites that turn ordinary individuals into managing leaders and our degrees of ignorance into profound wisdom. The admonition of the heart and the inner and outer balance that permeates and surrounds us is guiding us to our true and most profound awareness and achievements. It is the marriage of opposites that make the forces of conscious evolution work. Without them we would strive for the illusion of monopolar existences, which would split us up into dissociated parts that disempower our objectives. Our extreme bipolar conditions are due to such mono-polar addictions. By embracing the two side of life equally and at once we can transcend the prey seeking and predator avoiding animal nature that lies reactive within and enlighten our pathway with the resilient path of wholeness and stillness. All areas of our lives then become enriched by such states of being and doing. “Of all relations, the most universal is that of contrast of opposition. Every condition of thought or of things – every idea and every situation in the world – leads irresistibly to its opposite, and then unites with it to form a higher or more complex whole…. The movement of evolution is a continuous development of oppositions and their merging and reconciliation…. Thesis, antithesis and synthesis constitute the formula and secret of all development and all reality.” Will Durant It is wiser to embrace life for the true and balanced magnificence that it offers than to strive for a fantasy of what it idealistically should be. It is our unrealistic expectations that breed our depressions and it is our philias that bring about our phobias. Homeostasis is the great calling within. So, may we become fully aware of the freedom that our complementary pairs of opposites bring us and may we continually honor such evolving pairs from within ourselves and all others.

NE NOTE PRELUDE composition is a pioneering project that brings together a renowned Jazzcomposer and advanced robotics to create a performance. When two LOUIS XIII cognacglasses are clinked together to make a toast, they produce a very specific sound – a clear, extended G-sharp note. ONE NOTE PRELUDE composition explores the multi-faceted natureof this distinctive sound with a specially commissioned piece of music written by the ParisbasedIsraeli pianist Yaron Herman, who composed a onenote symphony using only G-sharp. “The symphony has a complex simplicity. It’s just one note, but with many dimensions – andmany revelations. The idea that one note, like one drop of LOUIS XIII, can evolve over time andreveal itself was something that I found fascinating” says Yaron Herman.
69
One note, as a drop, offering many dimensions and revelations “This offers a perfect parallel for the long-lasting flavour of a single drop of LOUIS XIII cognac, which lasts for up to one hour on the palate” adds Ludovic du Plessis, LOUIS XIII Global Executive Director. The one-of-a-kind piece written by Yaron Herman begins with a single piano note, which cleverly draws you in. The piano is then joined by a string quartet playing the same note, but at different octaves and using contrasting rhythms, the individual instruments adding texture, structure and harmony to the composition. A violin provides the main melody, while a second violin and a viola add colour and harmony. A cello adds a rhythmic bass line, bringing structure to the melody, which rises to a crescendo. Always thinking a century ahead ONE NOTE PRELUDE composition embraces future technology to recreate the perfect G-sharp sound thanks to a pair of specially choreographed robotic arms come together, in time with the music, to make a unique toast with two LOUIS XIII cognac glasses. The robots are going to give precisely the right angle and the right speed to make the toast, and to get that sound. “Tasting LOUIS XIII cognac is all about the aromas, the depth of flavours, the texture and, of course, the sound. When you toast two glasses together you get this long, drawn-out note, which is part of the overall experience” says Ludovic du Plessis. “ONE NOTE PRELUDE composition not only pays tribute to the musical note, but also expresses the complexity that can be found in a single note, as an echo to the tasting of just on drop of LOUIS XIII Cognac.” As of April 2020, the unique robots’ arms will be displayed in the LOUIS XIII Boutiques first in Singapore, Beijing and Xi’an then will travel the world. summer for an adventure-filled break in the unblemished beauty of their national park. EAT For me, food is an essential part of travel and the main reason I pack my bags, and it is here where Slovenia really shines. Food is a big part of their culture, so to really understand Slovenians, you must experience their different regional dishes. Slovenia has 24 separate gastronomic regions, with over 170 distinguishable dishes that will cater to any palette. The Alpine flavours stand in direct contrast to the ones you’ll find
along the coast, while the foods along the Pannonian Plain and in the Karst region offer different techniques and flavours. Slovene chefs are fast becoming known for their creative culinary genius. They have some of the best ingredients at hand and combine them in such a way that you are left dreaming of the sensory experience long after you have returned home. Leading the pack is Ana Roš from Hiša Franko. Pronounced Hi-sha Franko, the restaurant is located in the stunning surrounds of the Soča Valley and draws visitors from around the world. This self-
Ljubljana, world-renowned chef Janez Bratovž sources his ingredients from his garden and field and at the famous Ljubljana marketplace, which means his culinary creations will differ according to seasonal availability. He is known for being a perfectionist and his dishes are charmingly presented with bold, primal flavours and a combination of French, Mediterranean and nostalgic Slovene cuisines. Another chef to keep in mind is Tomaž Kavčič from the Pri Lojzetu Restaurant at the Zemono Maner. He uses the traditional ‘poor man’s ingredients’ of the Vipava Valley. Each of these chefs combines their creativity and local ingredients to create unique cuisine worthy of prestigious world titles and accolades. Kavčič’s playful approach to food makes every dish served at the beautiful baroque Zemono mansion near Ajdovščina a masterpiece. In a country fast becoming known for their food, it is only fitting that their wine must be making an impression too. Central Europe as a whole has been lurking on the outskirts of the wine industry for some time, becoming quite popular in recent years with maturing vines and growing expertise. The three wine regions in Slovenia are each known for its individual wines and visitors should make it a priority to spend time in each of these regions to experience the wine culture of this 20 273m2 country. Try the teran wines in the Primorska Region, the Rhein Riesling and Traminec in the Podravje Region and cviček in the Posavje Region. Their indigenous wines are part of the protected geographical indication and your next dinner party will be all the more interesting if you introduce your guests to refošk, rebula, teran and cviček.

STAY Slovenia is no stranger to ultimate luxury experiences, and with the incredible scenery they have to offer, choosing your hotel might become difficult, as their offering of rooms-with-a-view is unparalleled. The Otočec Castle Hotel is the only water castle in Slovenia, located on an island in the middle of the green River Krka, winding among the wine-growing hills of the Dolenjska region. The hotel is surrounded by the castle park, populated with indigenous trees and white swans. A prestigious 18-hole golf course is also available and a definite must when visiting. If you’re headed to the coast, stay in the charming town of Portoroz, where the Kempinski Palace Hotel will stun you with the world-class cuisine of the Slovenian Istria Peninsula. One of the most beautiful hotels in the Adriatic, it was opened in 1910 and still reflects the elegance of Austria-Hungary. This is where the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand danced, and where film director Orson Welles and actress Sophia Loren stayed. At Hotel Aleksander in Rogaška, a small town designed as an idyllic park and one of the most well-known spa centres in Europe, you’ll find the ultimate place for relaxation. Guests can book an apartment on the roof of the hotel with a 230m² terrace and a private Finnish sauna. PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY

PLAY The country is small enough for you to explore most of it, even on a short trip. Lake Bled is the popular Instagram hotspot, but head out a little further to the Triglav National Park for a secluded spot of beauty where magnificent views and green Alpine valleys will leave you breathless. This is Slovenia’s largest protected area and only national park. The Triglav Mountain, at 2864m, is Slovenia’s highest mountain and encompasses the majority of the eastern part of the Julian Alps. Taking on the hiking trails and having a picnic is the best way to explore the park. Lake Bohinj is also a must-visit for photographers – you’ll spend days there! A visit to the capital, Ljubljana, will show you the best that Slovenia has to offer. Designed by architect Jože Plečnik and known as the ‘town of a thousand events’, you’ll be amazed at everything there is to do in the city. Visit the central market and Tivoli park and have lunch on the Ljubljanica river before visiting the National Museum or going on a wine tour. The city’s diverse cultural attractions can be explored on foot, as the inner city is restricted to pedestrian traffic only. The spectacular international influences may abound in the architecture and deliciously in the remarkable local cuisine, but Ljubljana is also brilliantly, defiantly itself, a modern
hub where the local farmers’ market stocks vegetables grown just a stroll away by old ladies in their allotments. The student population makes for a vibey visit, and if you climb the tower of the castle on a clear day, you’ll be able to see a third of this minute country from the top. Slovenia is nestled between the
well-known tourist-hubs of Italy, Hungary and Croatia, and absorbed its food and classical culture from its neighbours, serving up a melting pot of influences, flavours and experiences that you can enjoy in each region. The natural beauty, awe-inducing adventures and classy hotels to rest your head guarantee that this will be a trip to relish.

OLD STOCK If you’re even slightly familiar with whisky then you’ll know about maturation, and its importance. This is the process by which whisky is “aged” in casks, thereby acquiring the most part of its eventual flavour. Older whiskies aren’t necessarily better whiskies of course, but there’s something special about them. The individual flavour that they’ve cultivated is scarce. It can’t be replicated without the long passage of time, and even then maybe not at all. When a whisky reaches an epic milestone, like 50 years of age, or say 51, then it becomes a rare privilege to be able to experience it, one that should be seized with both hands. These opportunities are usually few and far between. Whiskies of such ancient vintage are gut-wrenchingly expensive, out of reach for many, and albeit intriguing not worth the cost for others. Sadly, those who can afford it often make such purchases for investment or collection purposes, with the result being that many of the world’s oldest and most prized whiskies never get put to palate. They’re destined to sit encased in glass for eternity. Cragellachie Single Malt, renowned for its popular 13YO and 17YO whiskies, has recently launched a crusade towards redressing this injustice…well maybe not a crusade, but a damned good initiative. The self-proclaimed “bad boy of Speyside” is going against the malt, so to speak, by taking a cask of 51 year old whisky and offering it to whisky lovers around the world…for free! In a world of cynical and rehashed marketing campaigns this is as sincere and creative as it gets – well done to them. Dubbed Bar 51, the South African leg of these events, a pop-up bar disseminating the epic tastings, took place in Joburg at the WhiskyBrother bar on 21 and 22 November, and in Cape Town at the Athletic Club & Social on 26 and 27 November. BALANCED PEAT Does anyone remember the transition of Black Bottle from the former green glass to the current black glass version? The step-up in flavour, richness and quality was remarkable. In particular the balance of the blend was spectacularly improved. This may not have been as pleasing to hard-core peat freaks as to the rest of us, but most I think will agree the mellowing of its trademark smoke with dark fruits and anise was a boon. There is little to be faulted in Port Charlotte’s

Scottish Barley, but the brand’s latest exponent, a 10YO launched recently in South Africa, has followed a similar (if less pronounced) trajectory to Black Bottle. It still showcases the big peat, make no mistake, but it’s accorded more prominent roles to the other players, toffee, sweet oak, and vanilla in particular. The 10YO perpetuates Port Charlotte’s (and indeed Bruichladdich’s) infatuation with wine casks to great effect, especially with its extended maturation. Long may it continue.

BIG SHERRY Glendronach has been on the local scene for a while, but it recently underwent a change of ownership, the reins assumed by industry giant Brown Forman. The upshot for us whisky lovers is that the brand now wields distribution clout that is considerably stronger. You’re significantly more likely to find its core range, comprising a 12, 18 and 21YO, in your preferred bars and liquor stores. f you were to bring up the martini in arbitrary conversation, you’d likely get a response that alludes to James Bond. He’s almost come to own the drink and the drink him, such is the strength of their association. And it’s not difficult to understand why Ian Fleming imbued his famous superspy with this predilection. They fit like hand in glove. They’re both suave and sophisticated, they’re both single-mindedly serious (with a certain dry wit), and they both get the job done, always. The Martini has played no small part in fashioning the 007 legend, and he in turn has transported the drink into today’s popular imagination.
force of Bond’s iconic prescription. Shaking risks over-dilution, and introduces foamy agitation on what should be a static presentation. Some also say that it ‘bruises’ the gin, but what that means isn’t obviously discernible. That it’s still a drop-twogears surge of a drink is without question – this is a stiff injection of booze – but the balance has shifted somewhat to a greater appreciation of its other charms: it’s also cultivated, elegant and, if made properly, outright delicious. On the topic of how this should be accomplished, you’ll find martini aficionados often pitted against one another in passionate disagreements, but whilst differences abound, there is widespread consensus on two vital elements: the botanical-loaded favours
The martini has persisted through the decades, with Bond’s help, for good reason: it is intrinsically exceptional, allowing it to weather fluctuations in popular tastes and impress itself on one generation after another of gin make a more interesting (and varying) base than vodka’s bland neutrality (Movie Bond prefers vodka, but Book Bond drinks both) and that it should be drunk deep-chilled i.e. stirred with lots of ice, and dispensed

We thank him for it, for keeping the flame alive. At one time, of course – for long stretches on either side of the Second World War, beginning with the roaring twenties – the martini was wildly popular of its own accord, the symbol of an unrestrained golden age of excess. It has ebbed since, but now, resurgent, is flowing again – perhaps though having evolved into a vehicle for discerning rather than uninhibited drinking. In this new phase of its existence there seems to be real attention to quality. As an example, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any credible establishment that recommends a shaken Martini, despite the influential
in frozen glassware. The rest is down to personal preference, notably the ratio of vermouth to gin, which ranges from rinsing the ice in vermouth before discarding it, to the recent 50:50 trend. Noël Coward famously suggested that “a perfect martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy”, but given that the best dry vermouths come from France rather than Italy, this ill-informed opinion should be treated with some scepticism – gin without vermouth is just gin, not a martini. The addition of bitters can be considered and dry sherry substituted for vermouth, although purists would sneer at both suggestions. Garnishes are essential and play a defining role; an expressed twist of lemon produces a completely different result to olives, and both to olive brine. In fact, such is their effect that the employment of another garnish, a cocktail onion, confers a distinct name to the drink: the Gibson. There’s much to be said for taking an open-minded position and evaluating all these options in the field. The martini has persisted through the decades, with Bond’s help, for good reason: it is intrinsically exceptional, allowing it to weather fluctuations in popular tastes and impress itself on one generation after another. And once you’ve acquired a taste for it, you’ll be hooked for life. Ice breaker, conversation flamer, party blaster – it ticks all the boxes. Go forth and stir.

aute Cabrière, with its iconic setting on the scenic Franschhoek Pass, has been woven into the fabric of the wine loving world, both locally and abroad. Today, 25 years since the von Arnim family launched the iconic Haute Cabrière cellar, the winery has transformed into an inviting space, rivalling the best on offer globally, for visitors to immerse themselves in the culture established by proprietor Achim von Arnim. This newly renovated facility makes Haute Cabrière the ultimate belle femme of the Franschhoek Valley. The renovation journey was aimed at building on the past 25 years, and setting the scene for the next. “The project has been about honouring the legacy of our heritage, while celebrating the beauty of evolution. Even though the wines and the destination are ever changing, it will never lose its essence,” says Takuan von Arnim, Director of Wine and 2nd generation Cellar Master. “Every element of the

erman Contemporary is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2017 by Candice Berman and established in Johannesburg. Candice opened her first gallery in 2013 in Bryanston, specialising in fine art by artists from South Africa. Five years later, she expanded her activities to the contemporary art scene, inaugurating her first gallery at Alice Lane in Johannesburg with an exhibition of works from emerging South African artists. Over the last few months, Berman Contemporary has undergone a metamorphosis to become representative of South African contemporary art within a global context. Since the middle of 2019, the gallery has moved to a new space at Rand Steam centre, a building formerly known as Rand Steam Laundries and now a renovated heritage site. A new space, a cultural hub, easily accessible and with more possibilities for hosting a vibrant contemporary programme with art talks, performances, special events for collectors and curated exhibitions which seek to engage the viewer.

An important aspect of Candice Berman’s vision is her commitment to not only representing artists, but also supporting their growth and development in various personal and professional facets. Candice has recently established a cooperative relationship with Els van Mourik, who is responsible for artist coaching through studio visits, the curatorial programme and Berman Contemporary’s participation in international art fairs. The gallery further aims to establish a synergistic network between South African artists and their global contemporaries, many of whom evidently want to engage with the current South African art scene – not only as observers, but as active analysts, experimenters and contributors. JEAN DU PLESSIS Johannesburg based artist, Jean du Plessis, works with large scale canvases and linear sculptural forms that express his free-flow creative process. He is fascinated with the beauty that arises when things are damaged or decayed. Much like the status that South Africa often finds itself in. He celebrates the process of damage and transforms the damage in revealing the true life and essence of the beauty and honesty in material. His work is intuitive. He embraces a visceral approach to making art that does not conform to normal rules, striving to capture emotions and define a new type of aesthetic, using different metals – stainless steel, solid brass and aluminium. All being done by hand work, himself. This may seem simple in appearance but a complicated process to achieve the end result. His attraction to damage and decay can be simply explained in his own words: “It is about finding beauty in the imperfections in nature and in life, accepting the natural cycle of growth,

hat is the notion that veered Karin Kleinsmith in following a path to promote and present South African artists. Given her background in the International Financial industry, which often includes Art Advisory, it was a natural transformation that she decided to focus full time on South African art. “In my years of working with international clients and institutions, I realised there is a raising demand and interest in South African Art. On the other hand, I also realised that our Artists are not supported in an efficient manner that can put them on a global platform, even locally. This urged me to try to make a difference. Art evokes emotion. South Africa has a rich story to tell which each artist conveys in their unique manner.” Karin focus on architects, interior decorators and private clients to fill our homes, hotels and restaurants with South African art that tells a story.

references the writings of Dante: The final environment of Purgatory is the Earthly Paradise on the mountain top. Dante finds there no pastoral pleasure garden, or manicured rural landscape, but a ‘forest - alive with green, divine’. In his own recount, Freemantle says, “In this arid and ancient terrain I found the most magical rivers, cutting through the landscape. The green heart. The breathing lung. An emerald snake twisting through a baked red pink mountain ridge”. The paintings become an allegory of me, an attempt at recapturing the fleeting moments experienced during the ascent and descent of the mountain with each piece an expression of momentary climaxes sometimes reserved for the summit. His colours play on the relationship between this verdant green and the red ochre rock. Between this, visions of a paradise lost and found in the layered

the Nirox Foundation in the Cradle of Humankind, north of Johannesburg. Here, Freemantle began collecting rocks on the mountainous terrain and grinding them to make paint. This Alchemical process continued with his immersion into the ancient Magaliesberg mountain range with his most recent exhibition, ‘The Oldest Mountain’. Freemantle’s explorations and navigations in and over the Magaliesberg mountain range, one of the ten oldest mountains in the world, has led to an instinctive process of alchemy in his work. This is a painting process that sees a confluence of Freemantle’s own time with that of the earths, a paradox through which the artist engages with the essence of this ancient place in our fleeting presence. Within this pursuit of time Freemantle sees the rugged journey as a metaphorical ascent too and

Upgraded performance, born from racing While many believed that the refinement and performance of the GT-R's 550-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine – each handcrafted by its own takumi technician – were so high that there was no room for improvement, the car's engineers had a few tricks up their sleeves. Among them was incorporating new turbochargers, which help increase the engine's low rpm response due to an abradable seal, providing tighter clearances and a 5 percent increase in efficiency. Overall, they provide even sharper engine response in and out of corners, making the driving experience more rewarding and richer than ever before. The exhaust manifolds, inspired by racing technology, have optimised turbo flange attachment points, which allow for easier servicing and potential tuning, without touching the exhaust manifold. GT-R features a revised 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with a refined "R mode," made for both road and track. It features more aggressive downshifts to better anticipate swift cornering exits, with gear selection happening during ABS engagement, resulting in reduced understeer and a more driver-intuitive feeling. The adaptive shift control is programmed to change shift schedules to fit the user's driving style, making it possible to drive according to the law on public roads, with full brute force available on the racetrack, without needing to manually change shift modes. The GT-R's signature exhaust note is the product of a new titanium muffler, featuring titanium finishers with burnished blue tips. The electronically controlled suspension has been tuned to provide better cornering stability and a smoother ride. The steering is more linear and precise than ever, requiring minimal corrections at speeds of up to 300 kph (186 mph). A new brake booster increases the initial braking response by engaging with less pedal stroke, resulting in enhanced stopping power and feel.

Customers who choose the 423kW supercharged V8 benefit from the new Quiet Start function, which ensures a more subtle, refined sound – the electrically-actuated bypass valves in the rear silencer remain closed until they automatically open up under load. If desired, Quiet Start can be over-ridden by selecting Dynamic Mode or by pressing the switchable exhaust button before starting the engine. The distinctive crackle and pop on
the overrun synonymous with F-TYPE, remains, the sounds meticulously tuned to suit the range of powerful four-,six-, and eight-cylinder engines. Highly efficient, close-coupled particulate filters reduce emissions. Alan Volkaerts, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar F-TYPE, said: “The new F-TYPE is the definitive Jaguar sports car and continues to set the benchmark for design purity, driver engagement and reward, and a truly visceral driving experience – it makes every journey extraordinary. “Its timeless looks are more assertive than ever, technologies such as the high-definition virtual instrument cluster deepen the driver-focused feel of the interior, while the range of powertrains offers a breadth of choice unrivalled in the segment. Enthusiasts will appreciate the new F-TYPE R’s 423kW supercharged V8, enhanced chassis and intelligent all-wheel drive system, which deliver truly outstanding performance in all conditions while retaining its inherent tractability and usability.” Raising the output of the all-wheel drive F-TYPE R’s supercharged V8 to 423kW and 700Nm (up from 405kW and 680Nm respectively) delivers truly outstanding performance in all weathers and in all conditions, while retaining its inherent tractability and day-to-day usability. Performance is exceptional: the benchmark sprint to 100km/h takes just
3.7 seconds, while maximum speed is an electronically-limited 300km/h. The F-TYPE R’s increased power is matched to a comprehensively uprated chassis with new, wider, 20inch, 10-spoke wheels in Gloss Black with diamond-turned finish, and new adaptive dampers, springs, anti-roll bars and stiffer rear knuckles and ball joints, delivering even greater agility and responsiveness. Taking all of the learning accrued from the development of the limitededition, 320km/h Jaguar XE SV Project 8, the Quickshift transmissions in the new F-TYPE R has been meticulously recalibrated for a more engaging driving experience. The new F-TYPE R specifically offers even faster, crisper gear changes when the driver commands shifts manually via the steering wheel-mounted paddles or the SportShift gear selector. Both upshifts and downshifts are more immediate and give an even more connected and responsive feel. Customers also have the choice of the exclusive F-TYPE First Edition. Based on the R-Dynamic models, the First Edition is offered for one model year only, and has refinements such as the Exterior Design Pack in contemporary Dorchester Grey and five-spoke, 20-inch wheels in Gloss Technical Grey with contrast Diamond-Turned finish, complementing the choice of Santorini Black, Eiger Grey
or Fuji White paint. The interior features 12-way Windsor Leather seats in Ebony with Light Oyster stitching, or Mars with Flame Red stitching. Other highlights include the instrument cluster wrapped in Alcantara with Monogram embossing, aluminium gearshift paddles, an Engine Spin centre console finisher with First Edition branding, and an Ebony Suedecloth headliner.
The F-TYPE range will be introduced to sub-Sahara Africa next year and will consist of: F-TYPE R-Dynamic Coupé and Convertible: • 221kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder; Quickshift RWD 280kW 3.0-litre V6; Quickshift; RWD F-TYPE First Edition Coupé and Convertible: • 280kW 3.0-litre V6; Quickshift; AWD F-TYPE R Coupé and Convertible: • 423kW 5.0-litre V8; Quickshift AWD * Pixel LED headlights are exclusively available on the new F-TYPE R

At South African launch, diesel power comes from a 177kW D240 engine, with sequential twin turbo technology providing 430Nm of torque to optimise performance and economy. The D240 delivers fuel economy of 7.7 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 204g/km (NEDC equivalent). Acceleration from 0-100km/ h comes in 9.1 seconds. Petrol power comes from a powerful 3.0-litre P400 featuring mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology with 294kW and 550Nm. The in-line six-cylinder Ingenium petrol features a conventional twin-scroll turbocharger and delivers 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds and fuel consumption as low as 9.9l/100km with CO2 emissions of 226g/km (NEDC equivalent). Both engines drive through a smooth and responsive eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox and twin-speed transmission, to provide a set of low-range ratios essential for towing or off-road driving when more control is required. The introduction of increased engine options will follow later in 2020.

driving pleasure and excitement to enrich customers’ lifestyles. The new LC 500 Convertible joins the coupe as aspirational halo models for the entire Lexus line-up, providing unique driving experiences that stimulate the senses, and express ultimate beauty. The exterior of the new LC artfully blends the coupe’s unique roof line with the character of a convertible, achieving beauty with the top open or closed. The interior design considers how details such as the vehicle’s tonneua cover and seating materials become part of the design impression when viewed from the outside.
The new model follows the coupe’s ‘Exhilarating Performance’ driving signature, providing a sense of unity with nature and an exhilarating driving experience that can only be enjoyed with a convertible. The interior body structure has optimal placement and shape of braces to yield high dynamic performance faithful to the driver’s intentions. And thanks to the car’s robust and sensual sounding V8, the LC 500 Convertible accelerates in a pleasantly linear manner. To further enhance the driving experience, the LC 500 Convertible comes equipped with neck heaters and a transparent wind deflector – supporting the leading comfort and quiet that is Lexus’ DNA. The new LC 500 Convertible is scheduled to go on sale in 2020. The launch and introduction to the South African market is yet to be confirmed.

ercedes-Benz introduced the M Class in 1997 to take on the ever-growing SUV segment. The highly successful ML, proven through its demand, created a base case for evolving the SUV from “modified commercial thinking” to an established vehicle segment of its own. These days, close to 40% of vehicle sales in a category segment come from SUVs and it’s a hotly contested space. Mercedes-Benz changed the ML badging to GLE a few years back, in line with creating consistency; the E refers to the E-class family (medium size) and the GL part refers to the SUV. Similarly, there are now GLA, GLC and GLSs for each of the segments. The only badge left intact is the G for the G Wagon, which has legendary status for the brand. We put the outgoing model and the new one side by side recently to point out some of the most notable differences. It’s actually only when they are alongside one another that you see how the older model has in fact dated against the new one. Mercedes-Benz has perfectly understood that in such a highly-competitive environment, especially with its competitors having introduced new models and raised their game, that the new car had to be impressive in order to attract and retain market share.

To show that they have brought their A-game, this fourth iteration has been completely redesigned from the ground up. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has thrown in never-been-used-before gadgetry (these innovations used to be reserved for the flagship S-Class), showing that the GLE represents a radical shift in thinking for the brand. On the outside, the new vehicle is larger than the older model by 105mm, with most of that being within the wheelbase, leading to a much more spacious interior. The new platform boasts a 33% increase in rigidity. But it’s in the suspension that the magic happens – the e-active suspension is capable of managing far more rugged terrain than the previous model. Each spring can be independently managed by the system to handle traction. It even has a ‘rocking’ function to bounce the car out of situations where it may be bogged down in sand.

Moving to the interior, the cabin is spacious and well thought through. The new GLE is a far more luxurious offering than anything that came before – everything you see and touch has been reworked, including the front seats, which are firmer and more supportive. The materials used throughout, not least the optional wood and leather trims, are also of a significantly higher quality than the older model, giving it a distinctly more upmarket feel. The multi-layered dashboard now has its own individual design with rectangular air vents as opposed to the round ‘turbine’ vents used by other recent Mercedes-Benz models. The upper section houses a large hoodless digital panel with two 12.3in high-definition displays; the instruments and infotainment features are controlled by Mercedes-Benz's latest MBUX operating system with touch screen, and conversational speech and gesture control

hybrid electrically-boosted gadgetry, allow for better performance while still improving economy. The coasting modes allow for even decoupling during long stints and the camera systems scan the road ahead to detect curves and prepare the vehicle for the turn, significantly improving its handling. Curve inclination control is also available as an option, which emulates a sports car-like lean into corners. Having spent a lot of time with the new GLE since its international launch in Texas, I have to mention how quiet the car is compared to the outgoing model and its competitors, too. Did Mercedes-Benz achieve what they set out to do with this vehicle? I think so!

functions complementing small touchpad controllers within the horizontal spokes of the steering wheel, as well as a larger touchpad unit within the centre console. New technology comes in the form of an optional head-up display unit boasting 720 x 240-pixel resolution across a screen area of 45cm by 15cm. Also available is Active Stop and Go assist, a driving function that permits semi-autonomous driving in traffic jams, which is one of many driver assistant programs adopted by the new model. The integrated grab handles also provides a wide divide between the driver and front seat passenger, further adding to the sense of space. On the road, the tech-packed features in the new GLE, especially with near-

019 was a year of reckoning for many, and for me a year of betrayals and enlightenment. I suppose the universe was not just giving me a wake-up call but an actual Braveheartstyle gutting. I suppose complacency can set in when one is not in tune with oneself. In this last decade, I have been through several ups and downs – successes and lessons in business. Friends coming and going, getting married and now, getting divorced, but most of all celebrating the birth of my child, Enzo. It may sound clichéd, but a child changes your perspective on life and, your purpose. When decision-making, you need to consider the impact on a child, especially your own flesh and blood. I struggle to now comprehend how parents can abandon and neglect their own children, and have new-found respect for the personal sacrifices that parents make in the best interest of their children. On a personal note, when one loves completely one would hope that trust, loyalty and faithfulness is reciprocated. No one person enters a marriage wanting to be a divorce statistic or a victim of a marriage for financial gain. My lesson was that this isn’t something that can be controlled, especially when the basic elements that make a marriage successful are not requited. I keep saying that, when
most vulnerable, the universe steps in to help me, and this time the help came from the strangest places. I am grateful that it did, as it unlocked a whole new perspective on who I am and who I am meant to be, which has given me a new purpose. Given the scale of evidence presented to me, highlighting the extent to which I was betrayed, my resilience and my ability to forgive was severely tested over these last six months. I see that many people labelled 2019 as “#2019butdidyoudie” – it was that kind of year. I agree, what does not kill you really does make you stronger. The world – politically, business-wise, environmentally, digitally – seems to be, more than ever, on the precipice of a new order. Countries and people have never been further apart than we are now. That ever-widening gap between the haves and the have-nots will result in some sort of uprising… and that will force change. So, as we enter the new decade – we can now say that we have lived in the ‘20s – hope will always be there, and where desperation creeps in, that hope could turn into prayer or worse, into revolution. I keep saying to my team: certain things need to break completely before they can be fixed. This year has taught me that that is so true. Let us hope and pray that the “new” ‘20s are not a repeat of the tumultuous ‘20s of the previous century. Vivien Natasen
