ABOUT TIME

8

W W W. P R E ST I G E M AG .C O. Z A

T

he passing of time, a relatively simple concept if we look at it as past, present and future, creates a minefield of complications when we relate the term to relativity, space time or an added dimension which seems impossible to breach either by going back or forward within it. The reality is that we have a certain amount of time on this planet and have full control over how that time is spent. Some will argue that time should be spent as productively as possible, making the most of every minute and ensuring that nothing is wasted. Others might say it’s important to stop and take time out to reflect, pause, smell the roses and absorb the world around you. Reality has us lurching from meeting to meeting, frantically filling every moment by being busy, because being busy means you’re achieving something and fulfilling a lifetime’s worth of goals with either money or success, or both, to show for it. As Pink Floyd put in the song, “And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking, Racing around to come up behind you again”. A life of trying to find more time to be busy and get things done as if the time we have is not enough. Time is one of the base ingredients to luxury. Mixed with a generous portion of craftsmanship, attention to detail, exceptionally high standards and a quality product or service, time tests the ability to hold and increase in value. So what value do we place on time and is my time more important than yours, relatively speaking? I have tried throughout my career as a journalist to never be late for a meeting or appointment. My apologies upfront to those who have experienced

my tardiness – I’ve left prominent winemakers staring at their unopened wine bottles, waiting for me to attend their lunch while I was eating a sandwich at my desk, having forgotten about the appointment, something of which I am not particularly proud. But it happens and is forgivable, I hope, if it’s a seldom occurrence. Too often I come across people who make a point of being late for every appointment, no matter the importance because it’s just what they do. The value they attach to their time is clearly higher than the value they place on others’ time and their sense of selfimportance is directly proportional to that contempt. It’s not a time management thing that makes a serial offender, my uneducated theory is that they need people to see them being busy, and busy for them is a perception that if you’re late and hurrying, you’re busy and important. My advice is to slow down and remember that, despite the perpetual treadmill of being better-smarter-faster, better results come from an investment in time – time spent doing your work, being with family, reading and sometimes just sitting and contemplating, purging your soul of interference and rebooting your operating system. Because there’s an inevitability that time holds as a caveat – you only have a certain amount of it in your life and it will run out. The inevitability is palpable and inescapable despite the onerous Hippocratic Oath that tries to keep us alive for as long as possible. Pink Floyd again…….. (The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older…….Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.)

THE TANK WATCH WAS BORN IN 1917 OF A POWERFUL VISION, THE CULMINATION OF A LENGTHY DESIGN PROCESS. IT WAS A TIMEPIECE WHICH SWEPT ASIDE TRADITION, SHOOK UP HABITS AND USHERED MODERN DESIGN INTO THE WORKSHOPS, DESTINED TO BECOME A WATCHMAKING ICON.

ow 100 years old, the Tank watch has never been so new. For free spirits from every age, it is a universal symbol of style and elegance that has taken an unprecedented path spanning an entire century. While bridging different eras, it gives rise to a resolutely modern way of life centred around three cult models: the Tank Louis Cartier, the Tank Américaine and the Tank Française.

as a reference model in watchmaking. The strength of the design lay in its dramatic break with the elaborate curves fashionable at the time and the exercise of restraint in its form. The story goes that Louis Cartier himself modelled the design of the Tank watch on the top view of a tank: the brancards evoked the treads and the case represented the cockpit of the vehicle.

SQUARING THE CIRCLE‌ The early years of the 20th century were dedicated to formal research into aligning the circle (of the hours) with the strap and paring down the design. The ultimate goal was seamless integration of the lugs and the case as an extension of the strap. The project of the Tank watch was designed in 1917 and took its place

ROMAN NUMERALS The hours are shown in Roman numerals on the majority of Tank watches. When used in combination with the chemin de fer chapter ring, they lend a heightened graphic impact to the dial. CHEMIN DE FER Chemin de fer is the term for the double line on the dial that represents the chapter ring. The design evokes train tracks. An unmistakable Cartier signature, this graphic crops up throughout the dials of Tank watches. BRANCARD Brancards are the parallel and vertical bars on the side of the Tank that incorporate the lugs of the strap. The harmonious blending of the case and lugs signalled a unique stylistic leap forward within the field. This crowning achievement for the newly invented wristwatch was the culmination of years of deliberation and research.

WINDING CROWN Set with a sapphire cabochon, the winding crown is beaded or faceted. From Gary Cooper to Andy Warhol, from Madonna to Catherine Deneuve, the Tank watch is worn like a code, a tacit allusion. Since the very beginning, it has appealed to free-spirited men and women – free to appreciate its fine, understated design, enhanced by harmonious lines; free to choose a watch for its perfectly proportioned composition rather than the status it symbolises. These visionary admirers sensed the power that emanated from this creation and formed a special bond with it. Countless anecdotes and quotations testify to its power of attraction.

hroughout the evolution of popular music, song writers have told stories that resonate with generations, whether it’s the crooners of the 50s, the free generation of the 60s, the glam rockers of 70s or the new romantics of 80s. Musicians put their hearts on their sleeves for all to see and their music reflects their joy, their sorrow, their pain and their innermost emotions. Every time they step out on stage, they open their hearts and give you glimpse into their soul. Louise Carver is no exception and her music is a deep reflection of her inner being. She’s the type of person who gives of herself to people who relate to the subject of her music, and she does it unselfishly because she believes she can contribute to the emotions of others by giving them a glimpse of her own. The Louise Carver Collection is her expression through pieces of jewellery that reflect her poise and glamour but remain rooted in muted style and a relaxed demeanour – a true reflection of herself.

land IN 2002, OMEGA INTRODUCED A BOLD NEW RANGE OF TIMEPIECES TO ITS FAMOUS SEAMASTER FAMILY. “AQUA TERRA” WAS THE LATIN NAME CHOSEN FOR THE COLLECTION, HONOURING THE SPIRIT OF THE ORIGINAL OMEGA SEAMASTER MODELS, WHICH WERE KNOWN FOR THEIR RELIABILITY BOTH ON WATER (AQUA) AND ON LAND (TERRA).

ith 40 models offered in four different sizes (41 mm, 38 mm, 35 mm and 28 mm), the first Aqua Terra line delivered a “refreshing contrast” of style and innovation that could easily fit an active lifestyle. The minimalist design worked perfectly for business days and social nights yet the watches remained 100 percent Seamaster at their core, with a performance that was solidly backed by anti-shock technology and water resistance to 15 bar (150m / 500ft). The blend of city chic and ocean ingenuity was seamless. For customers with classic tastes, the Aqua Terra cases were crafted with twisted and facetted lugs that recalled the OMEGA designs of the 1960s. These pure lines gave the Aqua Terra a distinctively timeless feel, while the crisp, clean dial with its triangular hour markers also paid homage to the styles of the past. And as always with OMEGA, the attractive aesthetics went hand-in-hand with technical innovation. This was the first time that a Co-Axial movement had been used in a collection other than the De Ville family and therefore represented a major new development in the Seamaster collection. Since its first appearance in 2002, the Seamaster Aqua Terra collection has continued to evolve, but always ensuring that the watches remain contemporary and relevant. While the typical Aqua Terra design aspects (case shape, dial elements and handset) have remained constant, almost every other element has been reimagined over the years. Most notably, it was the inclusion of the “teak” pattern dial in 2008 which has now become one of the Aqua Terra’s defining trademarks. Modelled after the wooden decks of luxury sailboats, the teak dial has become a firm favourite amongst OMEGA fans. Other additions include the added minute track and updated materials which today include 18K Sedna™ gold.

Perhaps the biggest revolutionary moment came in 2013 with the introduction of the OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra >15’000 Gauss. This new model helped to forever change the way that the watchmaking industry approached the challenges of magnetic fields. Instead of protecting the movement with a traditional inner case, the new Aqua Terra made use of selected non-ferrous materials in the movement itself, and guaranteed magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss. It was another milestone moment in OMEGA’s long history anti-magnetic breakthroughs. Today, the Seamaster Aqua Terra continues its journey. Just as it was originally designed to do, the timepiece remains a trusted companion on land yet robust enough for weekends on the water.

A wide selection of new Aqua Terra models has been produced for 2017. Updated both inside and out, OMEGA has transformed the design to give each timepiece an added edge of style and a refreshing new look. GENTS’ COLLECTION OMEGA’s Seamaster Aqua Terra has always provided the perfect balance between sophistication and ocean spirit. In this new collection, some of the most popular features have been enhanced or subtly transformed. The most notable changes include the teak pattern on the dial which now runs horizontally,as opposed to vertically, as well as the cleaner aesthetics and the symmetrical case. Certified as Master Chronometers, the collection also takes the Aqua Terra to new heights of precision and performance.

PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY

LADIES’ COLLECTION This year, the Seamaster Aqua Terra Ladies’ Collection features 30 new models in three different sizes. Even within the refined cases, OMEGA has managed to give the timepieces several design twists and, in most models, a Master Chronometer upgrade that offers impressive levels of precision and performance. The clean and crisp dials feature mother-of-pearl and 14 different colours, and the symmetrical cases have been redesigned to achieve a seamless integration with the feminine-styled bracelet. EDDIE AT THE HELM British actor Eddie Redmayne perfectly fits the role of an Aqua Terra fan. Just like the watch, he embodies a dashing edge of classic style, but also has the ability to master the most complex challenges. Eddie’s brilliant portrayal of the famous physicist Stephen Hawking in

‘The Theory of Everything’ earned him the 2015 Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award. For his role as Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, he impressed the Hollywood judging panels yet again, receiving best actor nominations at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. These incredible performances show true depth to Eddie’s talent and, for OMEGA, reflect qualities of the highest standard. Off the screen, Eddie Redmayne is equally as admired. The actor often graces the top of the global ‘best dressed men’ lists, thanks to his sharp sense of personal style. As with the Aqua Terra, he favours timeless design, while embracing fine tailoring, bold colours and slick combinations. As the new Aqua Terra collection sails into boutiques, there is perhaps no better role model than Eddie Redmayne. On land or at sea, he seems perfectly at home with OMEGA’s newest watches.

going green DR JOHN DEMARTINI EXPLAINS HOW TO ADDRESS FEELINGS OF JEALOUSY AND ENVY.

28

W W W. P R E ST I G E M AG .C O. Z A

J

ealousy can be quite similar to envy, but it can also demonstrate a few differences. One difference between jealousy and envy is the following: If you are envious of, or covet another person’s position, say, you are envious of something that they have, that you assume and perceive that you don’t have – say their level of intelligence, success, wealth, closeness, prestige, appearance or spiritual awareness – then you will envy them. But if you are jealous, you could be jealous of something that another person recently acquired or soon could acquire that could be taken away from you, whether it’s a person you are having a relationship with, or a position that you desire in a business that they may acquire. Let’s say you want a promotion at work and instead of being given the promotion, somebody else is brought

in to take the position. You may have a partial assumed claim or entitlement, and you’re probably going to feel jealous of that person for getting that position. You will possibly resent the person making the hiring decision and be jealous of that person who got the position, because he or she is a rival and grabbed the opportunity to that you felt was potentially yours or that you felt you deserved. Envy is something different. This is where somebody has something that you don’t have, that you want, for instance money, or success. Coveting is similar to envy; you are coveting something that another person has. If you were dating someone, and you envied their intelligence, and a persson came in who had a more intelligent conversation with your partner, then you’d possibly also be jealous of them. You would envy them having that intelligence to relate to your partner in a way that you do not or cannot. You can envy their ability to

communicate with your partner, but you’d be jealous of them too because of the potential loss of your partner. And you would covet that dynamic. Jealousy has a hidden or revealed resentment attached. You resent that person for possibly taking your partner away from you. You envy them as they obviously have something that you don’t. Jealousy is based on a perception of a potential loss to a rival, somebody that could take something of value away. So as long as you are attached, infatuated, addicted, dependent on that trait you’re admiring in the person you’re afraid of losing, you are vulnerable to jealousy. So there’s an underlying infatuation of some part of the person you’re with – that can be in a relationship or it can be in business. So what’s the solution? If you’re disempowered and you assume that this person has something you don’t, you’re vulnerable. And the more the discrepancy between what you think they have and what you have, the more vulnerable you are.

The solution is to find out what it is that you think they have that you don’t have and work out what you have instead, so you can level the playing field and have less fear of losing. It’s also important to crack the fantasy that somebody is supposed to be attached to you because of some sort of agreement – that they are legally bound to you. So if somebody comes along and offers them a better package, a better deal, it will keep you on your toes. The solution is to keep on your toes and make sure you keep offering a greater package than anybody else. Go and empower as many areas of your life so that you can keep offering a greater package than any other person that comes along. To level the playing field, you have to keep empowering all seven areas of your life so that you’re offering the greatest possible package to their highest values. It is wise to keep communicating your valuable offer in a greater manner than anybody else’s.

Think of it as a situation with a customer. If you don’t provide for the customer, they will go somewhere else. And if you’re going to date somebody that you’re highly infatuated with and you don’t feel equal to them, then be aware that you will be vulnerable. So it’s important to find somebody who is a real mate, not somebody that you’re just infatuated with. You’ll pay a price if you’re infatuated. There will be jealousy and you’ll be vulnerable, constantly trying to compete. If you date somebody who has more power than you, you run that risk every time, because you can’t provide enough of the values they need to meet all their needs. Remember, your feeling of jealousy is a by-product of not empowering yourself. Founder of the Demartini Institute, International best-selling author, educator and consultant

o you want to own a little piece of paradise? You’re not alone, and the Mauritian government recently made it a whole lot easier for foreigners to do just that. The Mauritius Board of Investment (BOI) says that construction and real estate is the second fastest growing sector on the island with a gross domestic product (GDP) contribution at 10,4 percent – just 1,6 percent behind the leading financial services sector. This trend is expected to continue thanks to changes in the government’s property investment legislation in December last year. Foreigners are now able to buy apartments in condominium developments of at least two levels above ground (“ground plus two”), with the approval of the BOI. The price? Not less than $174 423,94. within an already approved Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) or Real Estate Scheme (RES), both of which have been replaced by the Property Development Scheme (PDS). Developers who have secured land in the vibey tourist destination of Grand Baie and the neighbouring village of Perebeyere in the north are making the most of these opportunities. Le Parc de Mont Choisy Golf and Beach Resort in Grand Baie, with its Peter Matkovich designed 18-hole golf course due to open at year end, is an IRS with sales being managed through Pam Golding International. “The top price for a

Signature Island villa is now $4 million, whereas one of the smaller Parkland villas at 346m2 originally priced at around $1 105 000 was resold in March 2017 for $1 629 000,” says Richard Haller, Pam Golding Properties operations director for national and international projects. “Premium golf villas of around 500m2 that first sold for about $1 746 000 are now reselling at $2 618 000.” One hundred metres from the popular Mont Choisy beach, the development’s La Peninsule resortstyle apartments are all sold. There are several reasons for this, explains

Haller. People like its prime location, the resort feel with 24/7 security, the Stefan Antoni design and the golf course. Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA) use the term “barefoot luxury” to describe their vision for Le Parc de Mont Choisy, choosing materials, finishes and colours that convey a sense of tranquility, space and relaxation. “If you buy early, you see capital growth,” says Haller, “but what’s driving this is essentially the ability to do business from Mauritius. “It makes sense for South Africans to route their ‘rest of Africa’ business through

Mauritius. The government offers several incentives, including a harmonised tax rate of 15%, tax-free dividends and no capital gains tax,” says Haller. “And the island is just a four to six hour flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town, so you’re still close to your extended family at home.” Jonathan Tagg, who used to look after the Pam Golding Properties Johannesburg head office before moving to Mauritius 11 years ago, loves the “fast mentality” of the island’s business environment. In the past decade, he has seen radical changes in Grand Baie. He no longer has to drive to the capital,

Port Louis, to see a movie, buy veggies from a wire shack or be frustrated that neither a coffee shop nor a book shop was open on a Sunday, or that entertainment outlets were closed in winter. “It’s become a year-long season,” he says. Grand Baie La Croisette, the largest mall in the north, gives people moving to the island from the city some reprieve. Haller is one of them, having moved there with his family earlier this year. The mall has everything you need from supermarkets to cinemas. There is a wide range of local and foreign retail brands, including a Woolies

KI Residences is just 300 metres from the beautiful Pereybere beach, consisting of 39 two and three bedroom luxury apartments and 17 penthouses with roof terraces, priced from $592 000. This development incorporates a gym and a natural pool. For entry level buyers who want a lock-up-and go, there’s the KI Resort development also offering two or three bedroom apartments, priced from $256 000. The developers have made the most of this long, narrow site, positioning the apartments along the far end at the back, with two 52m swimming pools in front. “They’re a great solution for business people who may be on the island for a month at a time, and would prefer their own space as opposed to staying in a hotel or renting an apartment,” says Haller. In Balaclava, a 15-minute drive from Grand Baie, Seeff has just launched a development called Ocadia. Named after the turtle endemic to the Indian Ocean, and in reference to the Turtle Bay Sanctuary within which the development is located, the seafront properties on Le Goulet beach comprise 16 apartments and four penthouses. Designed to convey a sense of being at one with nature, the architecture features organic and mineral materials such as wood, glass and stone that enhance the natural light and blend in well with their tropical surroundings. The apartments are priced from $1 223 000 while the penthouses are priced at $2 097 000 and all boast wide-angled sea views.

he Selous is Africa’s oldest and largest game reserve, as well as one of its last great wilderness areas. (It is three times the size of our South African Kruger National Park). This UNESCO World Heritage Site has long been renowned for having more wild dogs, elephant, lion, hippo and buffalo than any other game reserve in the world. Flying over the Selous Game reserve, you possibly can’t fathom how big it really is. This is authentic Africa as it is supposed to be. The Azura lodge is in a very remote part of Selous, giving it a private concession look-and-feel, as we never saw another 4x4 during our entire stay. Selous is very strict and puts the animals before humans, this is the only way they can protect and preserve the endangered wildlife for future generations.

I only realised on the second day, that we were staying in “tented villas”, since it is a part-solid, part-tented structure. Each villa is very spacious with an authentic bush lodge design and safari-chic décor, plus a private plunge pool, with a panoramic view onto the Great Ruaha River. After a few days, it becomes the norm to have a hippo bathing right in front of your room, whilst you are having an outdoor shower. At the elegant main camp area, a stunning infinity pool overlooks the river. The main area is raised up high for spectacular views of the pool and river as well. It’s quite simply the most luxurious, comfortable safari accommodation in Tanzania. Ideally, Azura should be booked exclusively by a group of friends or family wanting to take time out together. With only 12 tented villas, the camp is very personal and intimate. This would be the ultimate way to have a very special safari experience with your close ones. The staff were more than eager to fit in with our schedules. This is always great news, since us city slickers are not always eager to follow a strict schedule of game drives, when one actually needs some time to relax and recuperate. needs. I had decided to do a few game drives, a walking safari and some fishing which the team immediately structured themselves around. One tends to go to game reserves that have smaller enclosures. Tourists get very excited, as they get to see the ‘Big 5’ when they enter the gate, even before they arrive at the lodge. This however, takes the magic of being in the wild away. The adventure of tracking animals away and the vastness of the Selous, the highly trained guards extensive game viewing makes it an authentic safari experience. I have never felt so close to nature. The rangers are free to go offroad. For example, when we got alerted that there where lions in the vicinity, we went “bundu-bashing” with our open sided Land-Rover – I genuinely have new found respect for the capability of these vehicles. Unlike certain other lodges, you are not constrained on time or distance and the rangers went out of their way to show us everything they possibly could. Azura Selous is lucky enough to be home ground for three prides of lion. We didn’t

make it on time to catch a glimpse of these on this particular trip, but instead we found a pack of wild dogs that were chowing away their breakfasts. There are more wild dogs in Selous than anywhere else in Africa, and while they can roam up to 40km a day, one of the area’s three wild dog packs has denned near the camp for the past three years. They are incredible creatures and not nearly as sly as hyenas, yet I always thought they were similar. They actually reminded me of my dogs at home, their movements and characteristics. In the dry season, some of the rivers are dry, so we were traversing on the beds. For our fishing expedition, we found a quiet river with a few hippos roaming in the background. These rivers are teaming with gigantic crocodiles lurking just beneath the surface of the water. Hesitantly approaching the river, the rangers sneakily convinced us that there are no crocodiles. This is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, with all the snacks and beverages to just take your surrounding in. Obviously, the lodge provides the necessary tackle and equipment and even provide lessons in how to fish. The normal fish in the area are tiger fish, catfish and squeakers. Dining is also a big part of the Azura Selous experience. We kept on changing venue and location for each of our meals. f only the city walls could speak, even whisper. What would they tell of war and peace and the making of history in this corner of Russia? Leningrad, Petrograd and St Petersburg are all the same place; each name denoting a different political era. As we walk the heart of the city, we can’t help wonder what really happened during the Siege of Leningrad. For 900 days, from 1941 to 1944, the Nazi’s tried to bring the city to its knees through starvation. People ate cats, rats, sawdust and wallpaper glue, yet a third of the population - 800 000 people - starved to death here. In contrast, what was it like to be here over two centuries prior in the era of Tsar Peter the Great, founder of the city? Sheer opulence and grandeur was the norm then, and it still lives on today in his grandiose palaces festooned in gold and gemstones.

The Church on Spilled Blood is literally built on the spilled blood of Tsar Alexander II who was assassinated there, and the altar inside the church marks the exact spot. Over 7 000m² of intricate mosaic work clads the interior of the church, depicting scenes of saints and godliness. The mosaics are so finely crafted they could be paintings. Even the floor is inlaid with thick-cut marble in varied colours, making the Church on Spilled Blood utterly opulent. Yet, during World War II the church was used as a morgue out of necessity, and in the 40 year Soviet era when religion was outlawed it offered convenient storage facility for theatre props. Other city churches were transformed into ice-rinks and public swimming pools during that time, and magnificent frescos were painted over too. “There are about 300 Russian Orthodox churches in St Petersburg and three mosques, and they were all used for other purposes during the Soviet time,” explains guide, Elena Mikalchuk in a measured tone.

Before us now stands a masterpiece of detail. The Church on Spilled Blood looks like a party cake clad in minute and colourful decor created by a million tiny hands. While that would certainly be impressive, the Church is more so and simply breathtaking in its intricacy. In its forecourt, a microcosm of Russian life plays out spontaneously and with timeless charm. Makeshift tables have been set up under awnings and sellers offer trinkets and ice-creams for sale. Weaving through the crowds are gypsies in layered clothing and with disheveled hair. Around the edges, sweet sellers offer strings of sugary treats and a violinist busks oblivious to the surrounding chaos. A bride, with a purple bow nipping in her waist, walks hand in hand with her new husband, but tourists firmly focus their cameras on the Church on Spilled Blood – most are entranced and in awe of its unusual beauty and imposing grandeur. Its colourful exterior and onion domes are rivaled only by iconic St Basil’s in Moscow.

Driving through the runway-wide streets of the city, we pass the grey block building of the KGB and Elena whispers under her breath. “First they arrested everyone. Now they just suspect everyone.” She’s joking, we hope, but are again quickly diverted by the grandiose building facades in luscious colours. Catherine’s Palace is girly turquoise tipped with gold, and the iconic Hermitage, housing Russia’s biggest art collection – including Faberge eggs, is imposing before even stepping inside. It’s so packed with opulence that if you were to look at each piece for just one minute, it would take a full 11 years. “Did you hear that?” asks Elena, pointing heavenwards. “It’s the noon gun from the Fortress of Peter and Paul. That was a blank cannon shot telling citizens the time, because many didn’t have watches in the old days.” The gold spired church, was the place of worship for royals and remains the tallest building in the city. Inside is pastel paint work and plenty of marble too. Not far away, the domed edifice of St Isaac’s also beckons mosaic lovers to step inside and be amazed. Some of the vast malachite and lapis lazuli columns outside still bear the scars of stray bullets and bombs from wartimes.

The decades of British occupation of India has spilled over into the DNA of the Group as many of their hotels draw from the experience and heritage of those times. Tata Group, the holding entity, is a worldwide conglomerate which now also owns strong British brands such as Land Rover and Jaguar. On entering the hotel, one immediately notes that the foyer and reception present a typically grand ambience of tradition and wealth. ometimes we South Africans do not know how blessed we are. Anywhere we go in the country we are bound to find natural beauty of our country, largely untouched or unspoilt by mankind’s harsh influence. I recently visited the Cathedral Peak hotel located in the Giants Castle nature reserve, in the central Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal. Incidentally, some useful trivia is that the Drakensberg is a mountain range stretching over 1000 kilometres from the Eastern Cape to Northern KwaZuluNatal, including terrains into Lesotho and the Free State province. Initially named Drakensbergen, meaning “Mountains of Dragons,” the range was named such due to the peaked outcrops that resemble the spiked ridges on mythical dragon’s backs. The Zulu name for the range is uKhahlamba meaning “barrier of up-pointed spears”.

holiday drastically changes. Most places you and your partner used to enjoy are just not kid friendly or practical. This however does not mean you have to become a camper, trying to get close to nature and entertain the kiddies. Cathedral Peak seems to be in the heart of the action, this is the perfect spot for stimulation, exploration and activity. There is a choice of 18 different walks and hikes, ranging from gentle river-side ambles to suitable walks which include the rock paintings. An interesting way to explore the area is on horseback, through the guided trails. (Beginners and intermediate). A more adventurous

Whether you decide to hover over the magnificent countryside of Northern KZN or soar above the Drakensburg peaks, it gives you the opportunity to view truly breath-taking sights from above. The tourism potential of the Drakensberg is now formalising into more local and foreign visitors, helped by its UNESCO World Heritage status. In recent years, the increase in tourism has resulted in more tourism and accommodation facilities coming about, spiked by the emergence of hiking and mountain biking trails. The Drakensberg area is "home to 299 recorded bird species," statistically making up 37% of all non-marine avian species in southern Africa. Amusingly, in the movie, “2012”, after the World was wiped out through flooding, earthquakes and volcanoes, the highest point on the planet became the Drakensberg where the remaining population (saved in modern day arks) settled. It would be a “full circle” situation if that were to really happen, as a significant contributor to the World Heritage status is the presence of Rock Art paintings, which are some of the best preserved ancient art incidences on the planet. These were done by the San people that had settled in the area over four millennia with the oldest art dating back 2400 years. The whole idea of a holiday is to relax. This can be tricky when you have to consider the whole family, keep everyone entertained and manage to get home not feeling you need another holiday. Kids can be entertained all day long with activities such as paintball, tennis, mini adventure golf, volley-ball, bowls, badminton, trampoline, wall climbing to mention but a few. The residential helicopter is available for sightseeing tours and transfers. Whether you decide to hover over the magnificent countryside of Northern KZN or soar above the Drakensburg peaks, it gives you the opportunity to view truly breath-taking sights from above. It gives you a complete new perspective of how vast the space is, flipping through the mountains. For a romantic picnic, the pilot can land on the Little Berg at around 7000ft – don’t forget the bubbly. (Westline aviation cathedral@bergflying.co.za) There are a few options of rooms, ranging from family, all the way up to the presidential suites – which we obviously would recommend. Cathedral Peak is a family destination, that reminds me of resorts growing up. Kids splashing in the pools and roaming around safely on their own mission, while the grown-ups are lazing around. The idea of a buffet always daunts me, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was a huge variety and absolutely delicious. Even reading reviews on Cathedral Peak, one of the things that stands out above the view and service, is the quality of food, especially that tantalising breakfast buffet. Cathedral Peak is one of my new found special places in the Drakensberg!

ifty years is a milestone in anyone’s books. For a company, it is especially significant, more so if that company manages to maintain its ethos and DNA through vast changes in technology, cultural changes, globalisation and a myriad other factors over five decades. The AMG brand was born from two passionate engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher who felt they could deliver on superior racing engines. In fact their first plant focused on forged engines for racing. Their first renowned race car the Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 V8 saloon, also known as the “red sow” (red pig – if you want to make the translation more polite), grabbed the attention of the world at the Spa 24 hour race in 1971 and subsequent series, to enable them to later become a partner with Mercedes in the DTM championships.

TRAVEL

It’s no secret that Mercedes Benz themselves were a bit cautious of their executive saloons being modified for racing, it was unheard of for the luxury brand to be associated with the sport in this way. However, with the attention and reasonable successes, the attitude changed over time into partnerships at different levels of the sport. The AMG brand, for those not-sopetrolhead readers we may have, is founded from the surnames Aufrecht and Melcher along with the G coming from the town that Aufrecht hailed from Großaspach. In 1999 Mercedes Benz (at the time DaimlerChrysler) matured the partnership into a controlling stake in AMG and later, in 2005, acquired the remaining shares from Aufrecht, making a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Group. So, enough of the history lesson for now, let’s talk about the cars and the trip.

The 24-hour race at Nurburgring is an experience in itself. We were fortunate to have been accommodated by Mercedes Benz over the race weekend at a nearby village and shuttled through for the event. Intermingled with the race was a series of activations around the 50th Anniversary of AMG and a massive exhibition was established showcasing the AMG cars over the years, along with some of their upcoming models. It was car porn heaven as all the major brands associated with endurance racing normally bring their A-game. Mercedes AMG had put in that extra special effort this year, given that it was their golden anniversary. Pride of place in their activation zone was the commemorative 50th Mercedes GT3 racing car special edition priced at approximately 500 000 euros but well worth this price as there are only 5 cars to be made (each numbered). Each of these cars comes with a bespoke IWC watch paired with the car that may not be purchased on its own.

came about in their cars, they were able to patch and repair in short spaces of time and get their cars mobile again. Also of interest was the rule on driver changes and enforced minimum pit stop times including quotas on time and stints a driver could do in a car and in a team. These result in strategic decisions influencing the outcome of the race. Strangely so, this year, with the incidence of rain towards the end of the race on a small section of the track, the entire race result was won only because of the right tyres at the right time. Whilst many of the leaders were still shod with slicks which started aquaplaning on the wet surface, the one team cruised through on wet tyres to secure victory at the end. It was like a five day cricket test match with the last session becoming a T20 spectacle. Another little gem of a reveal slipped into the event, was the installation of the drive train of the Mercedes AMG

hypercar (a hyper car is one up from a supercar) project using a proper Formula One engine in a hybrid car that would achieve superior track performance to most competitive hypercars yet present a viable offering to the other marques in this territory. The final production car will be formally revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017 and is expected to retail at about 2,2 million euros. Our trip was rounded off with a visit to the AMG factory in Affalterbach. We were taken through the production line of the engine units, which now comprise the 5,5 litre V8s and the superb and efficient new 4.0 litre V8 engines. AMG’s philosophy of “One Man, One Engine” (not gender specific, as there were a lot of women technicians on the production line) flows through clearly as we watch every engine move through the assembly line with the same technician every step of the way. Not many mass production

organisations can create a culture where one person sees the product from start to end on a line and still ensure consistency, reliability and dependability. They even have a holding area that should a staff member be away, the incomplete engine is covered and waiting for their return. If the person does not return for some unforeseen reason, that engine is scrapped. Wow! The little hidden gem, kind of like the Q section in the Bond movies is the top floor of the factory with the legendary Michael KĂźbler (@f1mike28) assembling the exclusive naturally aspirated 7.3 litre V12 which is fitted to the Pagani vehicles. Mike comes from four generations of AMG lineage and pedigree, hence he was the most suited to building this magnificent engine. In a world where the combustion engine appears doomed over the coming decades, it will be interesting to see how a brand like AMG will balance heritage, craftsmanship and values into an age with robots, electrification and emission control to determine sustainability. AMG has several strategies in place to explore options and attempts to stay well ahead of the curve. What I will miss the most in the years to come, is that authentic exhaust note of the V8s and V12s of the past, that throaty gurgle those engines make on start-up and the sheer thrill of motoring and engineering genius.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY WAS FIRST REFERRED TO IN THE OPERA, WERTHER, WHERE CHILDREN REHEARSED THEIR CHRISTMAS CAROLS IN JULY AND BY DOING SO “RUSHED THE SEASON”. s a child I struggled with the idea of “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”, “Let it Snow”, “Frosty the Snowman” or “Sleigh Ride”. My idea of Christmas was sunburn, a day with family at the pool and long warm afternoons at the seaside, as it is with many Australians, New Zealanders and warm climate December dwellers. The result is a Christmas in July phenomenon to experience the traditional Yuletide fare in midwinter - let’s face it, roasted turkey, glazed ham and steamed pudding are hardly hot summer dishes. Tsogo Sun took the theme and assembled eight chefs from the leading restaurants within the group to create their interpretations of Christmas meals and their personal significance on the festive season. While we fuss around the opening of new restaurants in popular suburban strips or the burgeoning inner city areas of Cape Town and Johannesburg, we seldom stop to revisit hotel restaurants that showcase immense culinary talent and produce a consistent quality offering of food and beverage, and have done so over many years. The chefs on show represented some of Tsogo Sun’s leading restaurants – Lingela and the Grill Jichana (both at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani, Durban), Punchinello’s (Southern Sun Montecasino), Aarya (SunSquare Montecasino and Silverstar), Back o’ the

The festive tasting feast began with a vegetarian starter by Reuben Daniels of Back o’ the Moon called Heaven and Earth – watermelon and goats cheese salad with gingerbread spiced yoghurt and trimmings, which was followed by a fish starter by Deena Naidoo of Aarya – cod on mint and coriander puree with crayfish kedgeree quenelle. Matthew Foxon of Level Four presented a vegetarian main course featuring Porcini mushrooms prepared in a variety of ways; Kenneth Ngubane of Punchinello’s presented a main course of grilled Norwegian salmon with crumbed pap, pea puree, cinnamon butternut, and grilled fennel; Sandi Richmond of the Sugar Club prepared a poultry main course, pistachio & cranberry chicken roulade – chicken lollipop and peach and chicken jus, served with grilled peaches, pickled carrot ribbons, parsnip truffle, and carrot and peach puree. Prenolan Naidoo of The Grill Jichana’s main course was Rudolf’s Black Angus soft short rib with a traditional Durban masala spiced glazing set upon roasted chestnut puree and a cranberry pickle.

SHANNON My first stop within the Elgin Valley was to Shannon vineyards on the north west perimeter within the Kogelberg Biosphere. The Downes family runs, what they call, a sustainable farming environment, having started with the traditional apples and pears for which the area is so well known and then into vineyards after identifying ideal conditions for a number of cool climate varietals. I say, what they call sustainable, because the word is so glibly used within farming practises and you have to get a sense of methodology and context before understanding exactly what the term means. James Downes, who looks after the viticulture, says they’re cautious to sticking any labels on what they do, but through biodiversity, biodynamics and ensuring all practises maintain an equilibrium for the property and the greater environment within which they find themselves, they’re able to ensure a high level PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY

mornings and lazy afternoons and perfect slow ripening of the grapes. A relationship during university days saw ideal collaboration in the production of excellent fruit by the farmers (Downes) with the winemaking expertise of the Newton Johnsons, so while the wines are made in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, they’re aged at Shannon and the blends and styles are signed off by James and Stuart Downes – while James takes care of farming practice Stuart looks after marketing and is what James calls “the face of the winery”. The Dunmanway Farm, the site of Shannon Vinyards and named after

a town in County Cork in Ireland, the ancestral home of the Downes and Shannon families, started life as a terraced naval training camp where recruits carried out survival and life-raft training on the banks of the Peninsula Dam. The east facing slopes are 12km from False Bay as the crow flies and the microclimate is such that while Cape Town might enjoy a warm summer’s day with shorts and t-shirts as the appropriate attire, you wouldn’t want to be without a good jacket or beside a roaring fire on the property. of natural health for the property – incorporating soil health and good natural flora and fauna. The Downes’ commitment to farming over the years, through the knowledge and experience of father Keith, has James telling me that if there were a Platter guide to apples and Pears, theirs would be five stars and that is the basis of the fruit produced for this family boutique premium wine business. Another interesting piece of information from James is the fact that Elgin has the highest number of cloud covered days in the ripening season which, together with east facing slopes, creates warm

the Sanctuary Peak Sauvignon Blanc and the Semillon, Pinot Noir – Rockview Ridge, and Merlot – Mount Bullet. Although autumn, it was a good frosty day when I visited so a log fire it was with a hearty beef pie and four of the wines. We started with the 2016 Sanctuary Peak which contains 10% wooded Semillon and integrates into the acidity of the Sauvignon. It’s a complete, rounded wine and lights up the entire palate. The Semillon was initially only used for the Sauvignon Blanc but is now in full production as a single varietal and shows acidity, minerality with a citrus core. Onto the Pinot Noir and James was adamant that Pinot Noir should be allowed to develop and not released too early. A number of selected clones are blended producing a wine that shows its fruit first with a good follow up of tannins in a perfect balance. The Mount Bullet five way Merlot blend, shown as a Bordeaux blend, is a combination of five Merlot clones in a single vineyard. The 2013 is a five star Platter wine exhibiting elegance, minerality and a complete palate finish with perfect balance between fruit and tannin. While sustainability is the new buzzword engulfing the winelands, for some it’s always been the main focus of farming practise without having to shout it from the rooftops. Shannon Vineyards maintains its place surrounded by the biodiversity of the Kogelberg and ensures that its footprint merges with its surrounds and that it lives as one with the sensitivity of the biosphere it inhabits, at the same time, producing pinnacle quality agricultural products.

IONA I’ve not heard wood been called clumsy before but then the metaphor came from Rozy Gunn of Iona Vineyards, and if you know Rozy, then it’s the perfect match. Andrew Gunn is the founder of Iona and bought the property in the late nineties as a fruit farm just as the bottom fell out of the fruit market. The wine I grow to put in an Iona bottle, pretty much includes everything I have thought and done for the past 16 years. Bedford, it’s into the bakkie and a look at the farm from the farmer’s perspective. The farm is unique in that it has no agricultural crop neighbours, surrounded only by mountain reserve fynbos and forestry. Rozy took me through the Sauvignon Blanc vineyards on top of the hill and then the steeper vineyards of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon on the northern and north western slopes of the farm. Another property, owned by Rozy and her late husband Derek, further down the valley has the Syrah and Mourvedre vineyards with some Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. There’s very little glamour to the winemaking and cellaring at Iona,

this is a working farm and Rozy says they’re farmers first but the facility is comprehensive and all is done on site. We went down the spiral stair case into the cellar which stays at a natural 14 degrees, decidedly warm on the chilly day I visited. This is where Rozy made the comment that wines don’t cope with clumsy wood and said it took time to find the right levels of toasting and the right French oak with which to work. 500 litre barrels are used with some of the varietals which she says have a better wood to wine ratio, particularly the Chardonnay and Shiraz. The following is a quote from a piece Rozy penned for Port to Port concerning the Iona SOLACE Syrah 2014 – a Platter five star wine.

“The wine I grow to put in an Iona bottle, pretty much includes everything I have thought and done for the past 16 years. It is the practices that I have chosen to include and those I have chosen to leave out. It is the paths I have chosen to follow and the garden paths I have been led up! Most of all it is my sincerest attempt to express my own intent, which is manifested in how I pay attention to my vineyards, to my cattle, to my soil, to the people who toil for me, and then to marry this intent with the relationship I have with our winemaker who takes over these grapes, and in turn applies his intent, intellect and craft through the wine making process to try and echo or dove-tail his intentions with those of my own. Our 100% Elgin Shiraz, a wine we call SOLACE from Iona is such a portrait. I believe Werner Muller, Iona winemaker, has fully understood my methods and sometimes daft deviations in the farming of this Shiraz, and has

made a wine which is a genuine reflection of my philosophy and sometimes flawed ambitions. Solace began as a portrait of pain, a vineyard planted in the wake of the death of a husband, followed by huge optimism and high spirits in the finding of another, then patience, many years of rather dull perseverance and finally luck. SOLACE also reflects the great kindness from all those who helped and inspired me- too many to mention in general and the Biodynamic society in particular. As Rozy said, “All this at the end of the day it’s just a glass of wine I suppose, but that won’t stop me banging my head against firm objects and trying just a little harder to put a message in a bottle”. here’s probably no greater engine for progress than competition. It has defined our existence. What is survival, if not a competition? What is evolution, the mechanism culminating in an ability to build distilleries and make whisky (we can stop now!), if not the act of competing? Competition elicits some of the finest human qualities – invention, excellence, determination – but also some of the worst, luckily largely controlled in our civilised world. Healthy competition, by all objective measures, renders us, as a community, enhanced, advanced, and improved, across a range of endeavours, both the more and the less consequential. And in recent times the thrusting and parrying between Glenfiddich and Glenlivet (The Glenlivet, if you want to be proper about it) has lit up this universe. Following an extended era of persistent domination by Glenfiddich, the margins have been tighter in recent times, with the honours changing hands on two occasions in the last three years. It’s not surprising that the onset of this competitive fervour corresponds with a period of tremendous activity and dynamism for the single malt style; its share of Scotch whisky sales have been on

battlefields, amidst the popping of corks, the clinking of glasses and the venturing of “slainte mhaths”, to visit with a few of those that are making a difference. It became immediately evident, if indeed it hadn’t been already, that the story of their mettle, of the iron within their fists, like the Roman legions of old, begins with their superb foot soldiers. The 12YOs in each stable are what you expect them to be and more: of broad appeal, and consequently of moderate flavour, exceptionally reliable, and universally enjoyable. If any of this sounds underwhelming then bear with me as I elaborate. I drink a lot of different whisky, much of it old, much of it uniquely flavoursome. I guess you could say that I’m whisky spoiled. Nevertheless, I’ll drink a Glenlivet 12YO, or a Glenfiddich 12YO, anytime, anyplace, following any other whisky, and I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I’ll savour every moment of it. After work drinks, after dinner drinks, high society drinks, watching the rugby drinks, gala evening drinks, you name it, they’re up to it. The nutty pineapple sponge flavour of the one, and the soft, melt-in-your-mouth fruitiness of the other guarantee satisfaction to almost any palate. When I said exceptionally reliable, I meant just that.

I recently ventured out onto these battlefields, amidst the popping of corks, the clinking of glasses and the venturing of “slainte mhaths”, to visit with a few of those that are making a difference.

a radical incline. Despite these gains though it remains a comparatively small and niched style; for all that I’m styling them “titans” the Glens, whilst significant in volume, having each crested the million case mark, are not mass-market brands. Single malts appeal to a discerning audience, and whilst it may not be unswayed by extrinsic influence, it is relatively more attuned to the liquid itself. In my opinion this makes the competitiveness in the sector a lot more meaningful. If attributes like product innovation and quality rather than those like advertising and distribution, have a greater hold on the keys to success, then this can only be of benefit to genuine whisky lovers. When Glenfiddich regained the mantle in 2016 brand spokesperson Enda O’Sullivan commented: “We are delighted with the current performance of Glenfiddich, and rather than focus on the best-selling single malt, we are committed to leading the category through innovation and creativity”. This competition in fact can’t really be understood in a brand context. Glenfiddich versus Glenlivet? Those are just words. The actual, visceral fight is taking place out there on various fronts, between the whiskies: liquid against liquid. I recently ventured out onto these

The rest of their core range is faultless, there isn’t a middling whisky to be found. Among the Glenfiddichs, the 14YO Rich Oak and the 15YO Solera Reserve deserve high praise. The Rich Oak’s depth of flavour is a treat in such a young and affordable whisky, a testament to the casks employed, whilst the Solera vat’s legendary status is well deserved, delivering a breadth and balance that’s virtually unparalleled in this whisky’s class. On a rand for rand basis it makes a claim that is difficult to challenge, such is the value it delivers. When I consider the Glenlivet stalwarts it’s the 18YO that immediately jumps out. Here a prominent sherry influence pervades, powerful raisin flavours overlaying citrus fruits, apricots, and fudge, assembling into a whisky that’s quite simply marvellous; one of those that I’ve chosen to mark portentous moments in my life. Faultless is one thing, but you can’t expect to prevail only by not making mistakes. The SAS has it right. Who dares wins! Both of the Glens have dared, both have reinvented battle strategy – with products that are bold and different. Glenlivet’s Nadurra range went back to its roots, its Guardians Chapters inserted consumers into the blending process, a result of which was the show-stopping Exotic, and its Alpha introduced a new style of cask to whisky. Glenfiddich’s recent Experimental Series may well be partly responsible for the latest tilting of the scales, both the IPA Experiment and the Project XX are explicitly distinct and interesting. I was mulling over the XX during the last few weeks, trying to put my finger on what made it and its stablemate (a bottle of which I polished off in short order last year) so standout and so quaffable: it’s the casks’ profile obviously, these having been handpicked by the brand’s ambassadors given free rein to the maturation warehouse, but also the vatting. My guess is there are young whiskies significantly included, but unlike many other NAS products, these two have matched execution to the best intentions motivating this format. The younger liquid adds, in this case an appealing husky robustness, but it doesn’t detract. I have no doubt that we can expect more new and exciting products from both brands in the years to come. The battle lines have been etched, but unlike the real thing, this is a war in which everyone wins – not least us whisky fans so may the dram be with you.

or this new styling race, ARCADIA Yachts has entrusted interior and exterior design to the Milan based Hot Lab studio, famous for their youthful, innovative and refined approach that reconciles elegance and contemporary styling, exalting in all their yachts that timeless beauty that made the studio renowned worldwide. Ugo Pellegrino, ARCADIA YACHTS sole administrator, comments on the new direction: “We are convinced that the success of a yard, which includes us at ARCADIA, is connected to the experience that the owner and his entourage are part of, from the moment that they begin to think about a new yacht to when they decide to sell it to buy another. Here the role of the design studio in the early phase of design plays a fundamental role in creating a solid and trustworthy relationship between the yard and the owner. We therefore went to the best professionals in yacht design who not only are technically prepared, but also have an extraordinary ability to listen and to emphasize. Only when we could completely identify ourselves with the owners could we really understand the nuances of the client’s needs and imagine designing the details that make the difference when creating a successful semi-custom project.

After thinking very hard about our choices and working together on several pilot projects, we decided that the best partner to evolve into ARCADIA 2.0 would be the design studio Hot Lab. I am sure that our collaboration will be an immediate success, both with our first projects and with the relations that we are developing with old and new ARCADIA clients.” “The purpose of our work with ARCADIA will be to contribute to the continual evolution of the brand, already so avant-garde”, explains Antonio Romano, partner at Hot Lab. “Our

objective is to develop the winning characteristics of the ARCADIA brand in concordance with client briefs. ARCADIA Yachts is a consolidated and successful reality and we have approached them with enormous respect and pleasure given our first-hand experience with the quality of their products and their highly professional workforce and management.” The first project by Hot Lab will be the A100+ that, as the name suggests, will be an evolution of the fortunate 30 meter yacht presented at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. “In general we will respect the masculine lines,

clean and multifaceted, that represent the familiar image of the yard; we will reinterpret them to further develop the onboard living spaces, both inside and out, that represent the quintessence of each ARCADIA yacht”, said Antonio Romano. The full-height windows – providing natural illumination even from above – the spacious external areas, the latest generation of solar panels and a generalized eco-green approach for the whole gamma will be maintained, while increasing living area for guests. This translates into a larger upper deck and optimization of the foredeck area, while

improving access and movement with a more efficient positioning of the stairwells. High priority has also been given to conviviality and leisure while on-board. The aft deck can comfortably seat up to ten guests for formal dining, with space for a further twelve guests in the lounge area, transformable into an ulterior dining area. The owner therefore is able to seat more than twenty guests for dining. The same principle was followed for the design of the entire upper deck by the skillful combination of interior and exterior spaces to create a splendid leisure area, with a beautiful view of all the surroundings, yet with complete privacy.

The redesign of the yacht’s layout, especially the exteriors, has allowed a new communication and movement mode between decks that favours a single inside-outside experience. Hot Lab has proposed five different interior layout options to satisfy any owner’s need, which also simplify design choices (thus reducing development times) by proposing a contemporary minimalist décor that perfectly matches exterior styling, and continuously playing with the inside-outside exchange. Interior design is simple and linear, yet rich in detailing and finishings. It attracts attention, letting new visitors discover new aspects with every glance.

A perfect mix of contemporary design and neo-ornamentalism that unifies typical products of high Italian design with exotic rarely used materials like Carbalho wood and resin panelling. The architectural container and its content are merged, creating the impression of carefully elaborated detailing found aboard a water-level attic. Soft materials like leather and cotton with warm woods like natural oak with ebony accents complete the color palette that includes the entire spectra of warm grey, sand, clear cream and black and white. A restful environment, warm and welcoming, even though luxuriously composed.

VERSATILE AND CAPABLE ENOUGH FOR YOUR WILDEST ADVENTURES - CARLY BAILEY NATASEN DRIVES THE NEW LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 5.

he All-New Discovery in its fifth generation is finally available in South Africa. Bolder and more distinguished than ever. Receiving an invitation from Land Rover is always an exciting affair, since the instructions are always as follows: Venue: unknown. Dress code: warm and comfortable. These directives combined with a Discovery 5 is enough to know that an adventure lies ahead. Our soiree started in the outskirts of Pretoria, where we were introduced to the new model. The range comprises two models – a six-cylinder diesel with the 190kW Td6, which delivers 600Nm of torque, and for petrol customers, Land Rover’s advanced 250kW supercharged petrol 3.0-litre V6, the Si6, provides 450Nm of torque. They pointed out the All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC), and by the push of a button the car is programmed to autonomously maintain a certain speed, according to my comfort. VIVIEN NATASEN ATTENDS THE WORLD PREVIEW OF THE MERCEDES BENZ X-CLASS BAKKIE.

ercedes Benz recently revealed its longawaited X-Class bakkie to the world and they chose our ever increasingly famous Cape Town to show the world’s media their latest offering. Prestige was there to experience the launch as well as have a limited, but exciting passenger drive in this new vehicle. Whilst Mercedes is no stranger to the SUV market having soft road models in the GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS and the ultimate G wagon, this is the first time they have ventured into the bakkie segment. Before the reveal, us journalists were speculating quite a bit as to how much Mercedes would draw upon the Nissan Navara in the final version of the bakkie as this vehicle was advertised a while ago as resulting from the Nissan platform – was it going to be just a face-lifted Navarra or something totally different. The reveal of the final vehicle eventually provided the answers. This bakkie is amazing to look at in the flesh and is not far off from the concept they revealed early this year. On the outside, the X-Class is similar proportioned to its competitors in height, length and width. The front is unmistakably Mercedes, taking a lot of its styling from its SUV cousins. Although the building blocks came from the Nissan, the Mercedes is wider and larger in dimension than its Nissan donor, presenting a luxury yet purposeful pose to its stance. On the inside, Mercedes had said the bakkie must feel like a Mercedes inside, and it genuinely does. The controls are neat, functional and well laid out. When you tick the options for the COMAND system, you get a C-Class looking screen mounted on the dash with that COMAND dial controller between the two seats.

There is a lot of hard plastic around, as is expected in a vehicle like this, but at no time does it make the vehicle look cheap, rather it looks purposeful and functional, like a bakkie should be. The interior head and leg room is pretty much the same as its competitors, with taller people having to do a bit of twisting and turning into the rear seats. However, most buyers will be using this vehicle to cart kids around with all the sporting kit in the back, or used by farmers wanting a premium off-road poser, so this should not be too much of a hindrance. There are ISOFIX points for hooking up baby seats for the starter mommies and daddies.

On the off-road section, the Mercedes handles the bumpy surfaces well in its stride with good stability and comfort. Equipped with 4H and 4L modes that are accessed through the turn of a dial, it makes life easy in addressing different road conditions. The Mercedes X-Class will launch officially in South Africa in early 2018. The X220d is a 2.3l single turbo and the X250d is the 2.3l with a twin turbo. The very powerful X350d V6 diesel is only due in mid-2018. Pricing has not yet been announced but Mercedes press team states that it will “competitive as a premium vehicle” – whatever that means, I say with a twinkle in my eye. The final verdict: this new X-Class when it launches is going to give the best of Toyota and Ford a run for their money, definitely in the looks department and from the little rides we did so far, looks fairly capable in the off-road department too. I’m sure that order book is going to fill up quickly and the after-market business will grow tremendously at the same time.

W W W. P R E ST I G E M AG .C O. Z A

High-spec Power models will come with a surround-view camera and front and rear parking sensors, while a rearview camera will be standard kit in all variants. There is heaps of the safety stuff you’d expect, like forward collision monitoring with auto-braking and lane keeping assistance. In its press material, Mercedes states that the “bakkie segment” is evolving to attract a more discerning, even wealthier, market that is now needing an exclusive option. This is clearly evident in South Africa with the number of clients purchasing the top of the range options on the mainstream brands such as the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger. So, although we didn’t get drive the vehicle, rather sitting as passengers, what does it feel like on- and offroad? On the road, the vehicle was surprisingly quiet, in fact, passenger car quiet without even the usual diesel clatter and vibration that one gets from bakkies. In motion, the Mercedes is very comfortable, with very little body roll into the corners.

onfession time: I was mildly sceptical (and I’m certainly not alone here) of the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s claimed 6min 52.01sec lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife, allegedly making it the fastest production car to circulate the daunting racetrack nicknamed “The Green Hell”. I simply couldn’t fathom how a 640hp coupe that weighs around 1,500kg in road trim could blast around the 20.8km circuit a massive five seconds faster than the devastatingly quick Porsche 918 Spyder, which exploits all the motorsport expertise the Zuffenhausen brainiacs could throw at it.

The free-spinning V10 is hooked up to the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as the regular Huracan, albeit subtly recalibrated for even faster response. But now, after a day spent exploring the Performante’s breadth of capabilities at the dauntingly fast and undulating 4.959km Imola circuit and across some dubiously surfaced Italian backroads, it begins to make a bit more sense. The Huracan spearhead’s pointto-point pace isn’t about brute force – even though it offers a decent helping of this. It’s more about the supreme cohesiveness of the whole package, enabling it to carry an extraordinary amount of speed into, through and out of corners, thanks largely to the pioneering ALA ‘Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva’ active aerodynamics system that Lamborghini has promptly patented (more on this later). Naturally, the Performante’s upgrades also include a subtle massaging of that

musical, rev-happy V10, which gains lightweight titanium valves and a lowbackpressure exhaust system comprising two fat drainpipes rather than the four thinner tips you’d find at the rear of lesser Huracans. These tweaks liberate an extra 30hp and 40Nm over the LP610-4 for max outputs of 640hp at 8,000rpm and 600Nm at 6,500rpm. The free-spinning V10 is hooked up to the same sevenspeed dual-clutch gearbox as the regular Huracan, albeit subtly recalibrated for even faster response. Complementing the engine upgrades and firmed-up suspension is a weightshedding regime, as part of which the Performante gains ‘Forged Composite’ (chopped carbon fibres in a resin) elements that include the front and rear

spoiler, engine cover, rear bumper and diffuser, resulting in it tipping the scales 40kg lighter than the standard Huracan LP610-4. So much for the theory, how does it all gel out in the real world? In a word, brilliantly. For those who have never been there, Imola – or Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, to refer to it by its officially moniker – is a proper, hairy, old-school racetrack. It’s unfortunately remembered primarily as the place where Ayrton Senna lost his life during the fateful 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, but this shouldn’t detract from the fact that it’s an epic piece of tarmac, with pronounced elevation changes and fast, ballsy corners such as the downhill Tamburello and Piratella, where you basically take a deep breath and keep the foot flat. Firing out of the pitlane, my eardrums are assaulted by the louder, harder-edged vocal signature of the Performante vis-à-vis its lesser siblings. Throttle response is sharper, too, and, in terms of raw straight-line urge, it feels lineball with its V12-powered Aventador S big brother. The 0-200km/h stats bear this out, as the latter is only a tenth quicker to this mark. Everything about the Performante feels razor-edged. Where the Huracan LP610-4 was notable for having softened up somewhat compared to its Gallardo predecessor (in line with the top brass’s directive to make it a more user-friendly everyday supercar), the Performante seems ultra-focused in much the same way that the first Gallardo Superleggera was. The transformation can be gauged by Lamborghini’s test and development driver Marco Passerini’s revelation that the Performante is about 4-5sec a lap quicker around Imola than the Huracan LP610-4s that are being used as pace cars for our three-car convoys today. However, that deficit is partially offset by the fact the pace cars are shod with super-sticky, track-oriented Pirelli Trofeo R tyres that are worth at least 2-3sec per lap over the P Zero Corsas that our cars are on. Even so, the lead car ahead visibly squirms under brakes and through many of the corners, where the Performante remains relatively unflustered. Of course, part of the Performante’s exceptional composure is down to its firmer suspension, but there’s no doubt the aforementioned ALA active-aero

106

PRESTIGE

MOTORING

system (activated in the hardcore Corsa drive mode) plays a role here. Unlike a conventional active aero set-up, whereby the whole wing changes its angle of attack, the ALA system uses front and rear ducts within which sit electrically actuated flaps that open and close to either ‘stall’ (cancel out) the front spoiler and rear wing, or enable them to generate full downforce (750 per cent more than a standard Huracan). In addition, the rear wing’s inner air channel is split right and left, allowing ‘aero vectoring’ for high speed cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the ALA system activates either the right or left side of the spoiler, increasing downforce and traction on the inner wheel, which counteracts the load transfer under heavy cornering. What it all adds up to is arguably the most track-capable road car currently on offer, and the Peformante is electrifying in its hair-trigger responses, yet never seems intimidating in the way the first Aventador and the Murcielago were. It’s forgiving and adjustable, so even if you dive into a corner too hot or are excessively violent with your steering or throttle inputs, it allows you to recover without having any white-knuckle moments or losing much in terms of forward momentum. The electronic safety net is nonintrusive in its intervention (especially PRESTIGE: IN THE LAP OF LUXURY

in Sport and Corsa modes), so the Performante is a terrifically enjoyable car on track, especially with that V10 singing at 8,000rpm. In fact, the engine spins up to its redline so effortlessly that it’s not too difficult to inadvertently bounce off the rev limiter while your attention is focused on monstering the rear bumper of the pace car ahead. But perhaps the Performante’s biggest victory is that it’s not a one-trick pony that pummels you into a pulp in real-world conditions. Proof of this is provided by the subsequent road loop, for which Lamborghini’s events team has selected a route that includes some remarkably poor sections of tarmac – lumpy in parts, and sharply corrugated in others. On the whole, the Lambo copes surprisingly well. Ride quality is composed even in Sport mode, and the only the sharpest of corrugations cause any level of discomfort. The Performante is a realistic everyday supercar, even though most prospective owners are likely to have at least one or two other vehicles in their garage for daily-driver duties. As an overall package, the Performante is vastly better than the standard Huracan LP610-4, and while the Aventador S might have more bravado, this is undoubtedly the most desirable of all Raging Bulls.

VIVIEN NATASEN DRIVES THE NEW LEXUS LC500

hen Lexus announced through its LF-LC concept its new design language in 2012, it was considered bold and revolutionary for the brand at the time. The new LC500 was revealed recently in picturesque Franschhoek. I was very pleased to see that the DNA of the concept, as well as substantially all the design features of the concept then has survived accountants and cost constraints to an almost identical car today.

give the effect that the hole in the middle goes on through the car (even though they are recessed by about 8 centimetres). The front lamps are striking as well with angled daytime running lights (LEDs) with triple LED headlamps. Shod with 21” rims, high shoulders and a seemingly wider track, this tourer clearly looks the part of a sports coupe. With an all-new platform which forms the underpinning of new models from the marque, affectionately called the Global Architecture-Luxury (GA-L) by the product specialists, this is the first of many new models that will use this platform as a base. Let’s take a look under the hood. Lexus has clearly made serious effort to ensure that the LC 500 delivers engaging performance, at least to give the competition a run for its money. The LC 500 is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine with peak outputs of 351 kW and 540 Nm of torque. It red-lines at 7 300 rpm with peak power at 7 100 rpm whilst maximum torque is available from 4 800 rpm. Using a new, fast-shifting 10-speed automatic

transmission, the LC500 can attain a top speed of 270 km/h. The LC 500 is claimed to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. On the handling side, the LC 500 is fitted with the Lexus Handling System as standard which coordinates functions such as the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) to ensure optimum handling in all driving conditions. A limited-slip differential further enhances traction and handling. In terms of safety features, the LC 500 is well-equipped and comes fitted with front, side, curtain and knee airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Assist Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Park Distance Control. The LC 500 is fitted with a new multimedia system that provides access to audio, navigation and telephonic functionality via a 10.3-inch highresolution display with an updated user interface. The system is controlled using the latest-generation Remote Touch Interface touchpad control located

Not to say that homework has not been done. The product specialists present at the launch were at pains to point out that Lexus never set out to build the fastest or the best handling or the most outrageous car, they set out to build the most balanced, valuefor-money GT cruiser that would meet the needs of an executive or an avid motoring enthusiast. The LC500 says to fellow motorists or bystanders “I have money, I love beautiful things, I am different but I am wise and serene.” It is safe to say that any picture of this car does not do it justice. It is so much more present and striking in the flesh than any image or photograph I have seen. It might sound a bit of a stereotype, but I firmly find signs of a Japanese Samurai blade in the design language used in developing this car. From the bold spindle grille to the sharp angular lines of the light clusters, shoulders and roofline, the elements of the culture are obvious to say the least. The most striking trait for me though, was the tail lamps, which have a concentric recessing effect, which

in the centre console. The use of the system though takes some getting used to as it is different to what you would be accustomed to from its German and British rivals. However, once one understands the logic, it becomes user friendly in its own right. The interior design is as innovative as the exterior. The layout of the interior follows the minimalist language with arty and angular accents. The controls and instrumental cluster are art in itself as well – trendy, yet functional with good visibility. My favourite part of the feel of the cockpit, was the seating position of the driver, the hip-to-heel distance is 15 cm, and one that places the driver firmly in as close a position to the centre of gravity of the vehicle – All I could picture was Mr Miyagi saying to me “become one with the car, Daniel San.” Out on the roads, the car is one of the most balanced and intuitive cars I have ever had the delight to drive. In many automatic cars, one sometimes gets the feeling that the car is choosing the wrong gear or is unbalanced, never so in this one. In the short stint around the track, it was even more effective in automatic than in manual. With the quickest, if not the only 10-speed boxes (that I know of), the car is quicker than any driver flipping through the gears, allowing one to actually enjoy the car through the bends. Out of the famous Franschhoek pass, it was poised and purposeful, never leaving me once with any uncertainty, despite a wet surface on the day of the launch. There are four driving modes available including Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Eco and Comfort are suitable for most driving situations which little or no detectable exhaust note, however, when Sport and Sport+ the car comes alive with more spirited handling and control responsibilities handed to the driver – no prizes for guessing which mode I lived in. So, let’s cut to the chase, would I buy one? If you are in the market for a 2+2 sports coupe, with the traits of a grand tourer, the handling of a sports car, the ease of everyday use and a uniqueness that there will be so few sold in the country, then the LC500 is a definite option to consider. Then when you consider that the LC500 retails for a shade over R1.7 million, which a plethora of features that appear as standard which in the competition come as options, suddenly the LC500 becomes difficult to say no to. Well done Lexus for bringing us this beautiful work of art!

or those considering a change in career, comedy is fast becoming an option! With the wave of “democratically” elected leaders emerging out of the blue, defying common sense, there are clear signs of an “intellectual genocide” of humankind. I recall when we studied economics at university when the professors went on ad nauseum around the vicious circle of poverty we now have taken to a next-Level scenario – we now have a doomsday circle of incessant stupidity where we elect evangelists (not in a religious sense – rather defined as prophets of hope) on their social media skills (or noise) or worse yet, we blindly follow the crowd in voting and decision-making (the aptly named “herd mentality”). Where are the days of statesmanship, diplomacy and that EQ (Emotional Quotient) of “knowing and understanding” that made leading countries a craft and a skill, not just playing to the emotional sentiment of the masses? Nowadays, leaders are generally led by advisers who are driving an agenda based on statistics, research surveys and a predicted outcome. It also appears that people have short attention spans and even shorter memories. We now see leaders change their minds on a whim without anyone recalling what they had promised the day before and the public actually falls for it? So, getting back to my point – watching parliamentary channels and the comedy channels are pretty much the same thing. We have a steady and consistent mix of satire, parody, cringe and insult comedy genres enough to make one wonder if this joke is really the

end of the world masked in humour. In recent weeks, the threat of a nuclear war is being debated in humorous tweets on social media by the President of the US – no funny business if one actually looks at it in the right way. I’m not sure how many of our readers have read “The Prince” by Niccolò Machiavelli. In fact, the original text was written in latin, so even the title had been lost a bit in translation. Effectively, “Prince” should have translated “Statesman” in today’s terminology. It is the quintessential guide to understanding politics as an art and a skill, and is the starting text of most Political Science studies. So, with that in mind, it is a wonder what the politicians of the world are doing. I get it, there is something to be said for disruption where the sector or space becomes lethargic or lacks innovation, disruption definitely has a place. Not so in politics, where our leaders lack fortitude, diplomacy and skill. We live in a world where leaders have shorter term memories than goldfish, and that’s an insult to goldfish to compare them to politicians. We live in a world where politicians forget about the needs of their constituents, in return for personal gain. The principles in the “The Prince” are basically a manual for how people can be manipulated for a government to rule. Yes, to a large extent, this has become so in many countries in Africa. Thankfully, there comes a time when the people do realise they have been duped and they do revolt against the regime. In many a country, we are not far off from that tipping point, least of all South Africa. At that point, even the comedians will be sombre enough to bury the fools! Vivien Natasen
