Dear Friends, This December, the Prevent Cancer Foundation® is celebrating 35 years of saving lives across all populations through cancer prevention and early detection. When we started this organization in 1985, we never could have dreamed of the progress we have made together. But if this year has reminded us of anything, it is that our health and safety are of utmost importance. They are the most priceless things we have. And cancer doesn’t pause for anything—even as a parallel health crisis rages around the world. We need to remain steadfast in pursuit of cancer prevention and early detection to save lives. That’s why we are looking ahead to our 50th anniversary and to what we can accomplish—together— in the next 15 years. You can learn more about our bold vision for the future on page 30. Time to get screenings Back on the Books

When the coronavirus pandemic reached the U.S., many lives were put on pause. Along with postponed vacations, rescheduled weddings or cancelled graduations, something even more important was being missed by thousands— routine cancer screenings and critical vaccinations. In the early days of the pandemic, the Prevent Cancer Foundation realized we would be facing a downstream effect of missed or late-stage cancer diagnoses. Once restrictions lifted, we launched “Back on the Books” to encourage people to get their routine cancer screening appointments rescheduled as quickly as possible.

What you can do: If you are due (or overdue) for a mammogram, Pap test, lung cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, PSA test, skin check or dental appointment, get your appointment Back on the Books. Routine cancer screening detects cancer early and increases the likelihood your treatment will be successful. Health care providers are working hard to ensure everyone remains safe during their appointments. Call your doctor’s office and ask what steps they are taking to limit your risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Our Findings In May 2020, we conducted a survey to find out how many appointments were being missed and why. This data has informed the Back on the Books campaign, enabling us to speak to the heart of why people are postponing or missing their appointments—and how we can help them. • 35% of American adults had a cancer screening scheduled during the pandemic and missed it. • 44% of those who missed appointments plan to contact the doctor’s office to reschedule.

And don’t forget the kids! It is especially important to make sure your kids’ medical appointments are continuing and they are staying on track for vaccinations to keep them safe from preventable (and dangerous) diseases and illnesses. For boys and girls ages 11-12, this includes the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. This vaccine protects against a virus that can cause at least six types of cancer.

Technical Fellowships Since 2016, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has partnered with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to fund Technical Fellowships, promoting the rapid transfer of knowledge and innovative technology in cancer prevention and early detection, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. To date, we have funded 38 of these grants. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the usual fellowship process, we are excited to fund the three promising fellows pictured here, as well as an additional class of fellows in the coming year.

This project will provide education, screening and treatment to female sex workers, who are vulnerable to cervical cancer and who are not likely to seek screening.

Organization: Duke University Title: HOPE: Women Empowering Women to Adopt New Technologies for Cervical Cancer Screening Location of Project: Peru The project will implement an innovative model of health care delivery that is community-based, relying on women empowering women to be active agents of change in their own health care. This model gives women privacy and agency over cervical cancer screening, allowing 98 out of every 100 women to complete care at home.

Organization: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Title: The Efficacy and Feasibility of Fecal Immunochemistry for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Nigeria Location of Project: Nigeria Colorectal cancer rates in Africa are rising, but there are limited data to guide screening in the region. This project will examine the accuracy and feasibility of a commonly used, inexpensive stool-based screening test as a vital step toward developing colorectal cancer screening programs in Africa.

Health Care for the Homeless 2019 community grantee On any given night in Baltimore, Md., nearly 3,000 people experience homelessness. People experiencing homelessness have a higher cancer risk, and due to lack of access to health care, often do not have a diagnosis until advanced stages. Health Care for the Homeless partners with caregivers, advocates and donors to provide comprehensive health care and support services to people experiencing homelessness.

A community grant from the Prevent Cancer Foundation enabled improved access to colorectal and cervical cancer education and screening for the thousands of people without homes in Baltimore. Education and screening are now part of standard care at clinic sites and screening kits are readily available. These simple strategies, combined with targeted outreach calls to people due for a screening, have increased the rates of both cervical and colorectal cancer screening over the last year, helping dozens to detect cancer early and increase the odds of a successful outcome.

“Cancer prevention is important for everyone, but for our client population we know there are significant health disparities and much less access to cancer education and screenings. Many of these barriers we have to address at a systemic level, but by screening early, educating early, we are saving lives. Early detection leads to better outcomes,” said Lead Population Nurse Tracy Russell.

Health Care for the Homeless provided more than 800 cervical and colorectal screenings with the support of their community grant.

Action for Cancer Awareness Awards Since 1993, the Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program’s Action for Cancer Awareness Awards luncheon has honored congressional spouses, journalists and other advocates for using their platforms to educate the public on cancer prevention and early detection. On September 26, 2019, a bipartisan, bicameral audience of congressional members and spouses, as well as leaders in the cancer community, gathered at the Library of Congress to celebrate the 27th annual awards and the 2019 honorees under the theme of “Prevention at Every Age.” Congressional Families Leadership Award: Amanda Soto, spouse of Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL), and LeeAnn Johnson, spouse of Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) Ms. Soto and Ms. Johnson are active members of the Program’s Executive Council. Their activities include hosting educational and awareness events in their home districts. Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award: Patrick Dempsey Mr. Dempsey is an actor and producer, as well as the founder of The Dempsey Center, which provides free services and resources for patients, survivors, families and caregivers dealing with cancer. The Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program® works year-round to equip members and spouses—through educational seminars and webinars, events, and op-eds and social media posts—to take the message of cancer prevention and early detection back to their communities and constituents.

Awesome Games Done Quick Much like the Prevent Cancer Foundation– born around a kitchen table–Games Done Quick began as a gaming competition in Mom’s basement. Now, thousands of people gather in person and hundreds of thousands stream from around the world to be part of the annual “speedrunning” gaming event, Awesome Games Done Quick, to raise funds for the Foundation. We are proud to be part of this community that defies the odds, challenges expectations and continually breaks records.

The 2020 event received more than 54,000 donations from more than 80 different countries and raised a total of $3.13 million for the Foundation. Each year the generosity and kindness of the gaming community amazes us. To date, Awesome Games Done Quick has raised more than $14.4 million to fund research, technology transfer and community grants in the U.S. and around the world, and cancer prevention and early detection education and outreach. Think About the Link

This year the Think About the Link campaign teamed up with actor Ernie Hudson to share the message of the importance of the HPV vaccine to prevent at least six types of cancer. The human papillomavirus causes almost all cervical cancers and is also linked to vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal and oropharyngeal (back of throat) cancers. The HPV vaccine can protect against the virus to Stop Cancer Before It Starts!® Mr. Hudson is best known for his role in the 1984 cult classic Ghostbusters, but he is also a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 and rectal cancer in 2011. In both cases, screening caught his cancer early and increased his likelihood of successful treatment. Mr. Hudson is now cancer-free and is spreading the word on the importance of getting the HPV vaccine to prevent cancer.

Gut check: Young-onset colorectal cancer in your state

The Prevent Cancer Foundation recently issued a report to address the growing number of colorectal cancer cases in people under 50. The report, Gut Check: YoungOnset Colorectal Cancer in Your State, is a resource for members of Congress to raise awareness of young-onset colorectal cancer cases among their constituents. The report provides information about coverage mandates for screenings and the guidelines states use to develop insurance coverage requirements. Members of Congress can use its strategies to increase access to coverage in their states. Tim Kavanagh, a comedian and auctioneer, shared his experience with young-onset colorectal cancer. He was diagnosed at age 50 with stage 2 rectal cancer after a routine colonoscopy. Mr. Kavanagh said, “I thought

I was doing the right thing by having the procedure on time, but it was already too late.”

Had Mr. Kavanagh been able to begin screening earlier, he could have caught his cancer at an earlier stage or prevented it completely. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which determines coverage requirements for insurers under the Affordable Care Act, maintains routine screenings for those at average risk begin at age 50. But, after a consistent increase in young-onset cases since 1994, the American Cancer Society recently changed its guidelines to recommend screening at age 45 for those at average risk. The report serves as a call to action for Congress to use their influence and platforms and urge the USPSTF to lower its recommended screening age to 45, which could save thousands of lives each year. By working with Congress, we hope the USPSTF will hear our call and enable patients to access the colorectal cancer screenings they need. NOTE: Gut Check: Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer in Your State was created before the release of new draft guidelines on colorectal cancer screening from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in October 2020. At press time, the draft recommendations had not yet been finalized. The Gut Check report is currently being revised—visit www.preventcancer.org for an updated version.

Too Young for This Sh*t: Patrick’s Story In September 2017, just one month after getting married to his wife, Amanda, and returning from their honeymoon, Patrick Beauregard was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. The diagnosis had been a surprise to Patrick, who was 29 and healthy, and to all who knew him. “Cancer, at that point, was the last thing on my mind,” he had said. Patrick was part of a growing trend of Americans under the age of 50 who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. That’s why the Prevent Cancer Foundation is telling young people across the U.S.: You may think you’re Too Young for This Sh*t, but colorectal cancer is on the rise in younger adults. The Foundation is spreading the word about signs and symptoms of the disease, how to be your own best advocate for your health, and the steps to take—at any age—to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer. After several years of advocating with the Prevent Cancer Foundation and other organizations on young-onset colorectal cancer, Patrick died of the disease in September 2020, at age 32. The Foundation is committed to continuing our work on young-onset colorectal cancer in Patrick’s memory. Part 2: Innovative technologies to expand cancer screening This segment highlighted exciting new technologies that could be used in medically underserved areas to screen for breast cancer, oral and oropharyngeal cancers, and cervical cancer.

Part 3: Challenges and opportunities for cancer prevention and screening in Indian Country Speakers discussed the impact of the Affordable Care Act on Indian Country and how to connect with the community through educational outreach and initiatives.

While the in-person event typically accommodates a few hundred people, our first-ever Virtual Dialogue had more than 2,000 attendees from around the world. People tuned in from 48 states, as well as Belize, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Guam, India, Myanmar, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, and United Arab Emirates.

Quantitative Imaging Workshop XVI: Lung Cancer, COPD and Cardiovascular Disease—On the Cusp of Transformation The 16th Quantitative Imaging Workshop, held October 10-11, 2019, explored how a revolution in biomedical imaging, which enables radiologists to detect the pathological process earlier than ever before, can be used to improve outcomes in managing early lung cancer. The goal was to introduce robust approaches to allow quantitative assessment of the growth of pulmonary nodules, as this is a sensitive and specific way to find early lung cancers.

Attendees discussed how often lung cancer screenings also produced findings consistent with COPD. There is a great need to determine the best approach to screening for early lung cancer, COPD and coronary calcification with the same image. This combined approach can greatly enhance the cost-effectiveness of screening.

Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., accepted the James L. Mulshine, M.D., National Leadership Award in recognition of his foresight and leadership in securing funding and implementing the National Lung Screening Trial, which validated the lifesaving value of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) over standard chest X-ray.

This user-friendly education tool has been used in communities far and wide to reach young women with information about breast health and breast cancer. The Guide was developed to use in interactive group sessions—whether in person or virtual— and to encourage information-sharing with female relatives who are age-appropriate for screening.

Research shows that up to 50% of cancer cases and about 50% of cancer deaths are preventable with the knowledge we have today.

This Guide is your one-stop shop for cancer prevention and early detection information. You can find clear information about ways to prevent cancer and a breakdown by cancer type of risk factors, risk-reducing behaviors, symptoms and treatment options.

The Stohlman Family Like many families around the world, the Stohlman family has been profoundly touched by cancer. With three generations of their family affected by this deadly disease, they wanted to do something about it. The Stohlmans chose to support the Prevent Cancer Foundation to help others prevent cancer or detect it early. Alexine and Aaron “Jack” Jackson The Jacksons have always given generously in support of the Foundation’s annual events, including the Annual Spring Gala. The mission is personal: Ms. Alexine Jackson is a breast cancer survivor of more than 20 years, and Dr. “Jack” Jackson died from prostate cancer after a half-century career as a physician, teacher and surgeon at Howard University Hospital. Ms. Jackson was introduced to the Foundation in 1989, when she served as the national president of the YWCA of the USA. The Foundation and the “YW” collaborated on our first outreach program, Project Awareness. Ms. Jackson joined our board in 1995.. After Dr. Jackson’s death, Ms. Jackson’s dedication to the Foundation remained steadfast. She continues to support our work through her role as an emeritus member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors—we are so grateful for her generosity and service.

Jennifer Griffin and Susanna Quinn Talk about a dynamic duo. When Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin teamed up with her friend, entrepreneur Susanna Quinn, they became a force to be reckoned with. Each has dealt with a cancer. Ms. Griffin was diagnosed with stage 3 triple negative breast cancer in 2009, and Susanna Quinn with stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2019. With huge networks of supporters and influencers, they knew they could use their experiences to help the Foundation save lives.

“I don’t want to be a worrier—I want to be a warrior!” Ms. Quinn said.

Ms. Griffin and Ms. Quinn have joined the Prevent Cancer Foundation Board of Directors and are currently tackling their first fundraiser, a popup holiday shop, as board members and ambassadors of the Foundation.
