Pride in Plymouth Community Interest Company, supported by a fantastic group of volunteers, are again very proud to present Plymouth Pride for 2015 where we return again to the iconic location of the Plymouth Hoe. We’re very excited to kick of the event with another Pride Parade through the city, this time joined by the city’s Lord Mayor who will be taking part in the parade and saying a few words. We’re also joined by the Gay Police Association and the Plymouth City Roller Derby team which will all help add to LGBT visibility in the city. As in previous years, some people will question why we need a day celebrating LGBT pride. “We don’t have a straight day” they will say. This true but every day is straight day when people are assumed to be in heterosexual relationships, or comfortable in the gender they were labelled in a birth, but if you don’t fit comfortably into those roles then you’re made to feel different . . . often you’re made to feel ashamed. So today, for one day, we’ll celebrate what makes us different and invite all the people of Plymouth to come join us and see we’re not so different after all. Have a fantastic Pride! “I hope that this year’s Pride is bigger and better than ever. Plymouth City Council is pleased and proud to support our LGBT community!” Councillor Tudor Evans, Plymouth City Council Leader

Meet Devon and Cornwall Police’s Diversity Team: “The Plymouth Diverse Communities Team (DCT) is based at Charles Cross Police Station. I am Sergeant Rachel Ward and I have four officers in my team: PC Graeme Kirkup; PC Graham Little; DC Rhian Jones; DC Rob Souness. I have been a police officer for 10 years and previously worked as a response officer; on the Criminal Investigation Team, and on the Neighbourhood Team in Kingsbridge and Ivybridge. I was recently promoted and am really enjoying my new role. Along with my officers, I meet and build working relationships with representatives of diverse communities, and develop understanding of prevalent issues. This enables me to give tactical advice and guidance to senior officers. First and foremost we want to encourage those who have been subjected to a hate crime to report the matter to police. Please do not hesitate to contact us for help or advice.” “My name is Rhian Jones, I’ve been a detective on the DCT since June 2014. As part of the team I provide advice to other officers who investigate hate crime and offer support to victims of hate crime. I facilitate victims in getting the help they need to recover from the traumatic emotional effects of hate crime by using the vital links we have to important partner agencies, like Plymouth Pride. I’ve been a police officer since 2008 and lived in Plymouth since 2004.” “I am Detective Constable Rob Souness. I joined Devon and Cornwall Police in 2005 and have spent most of my career at Charles Cross Police Station. I have grown up in and around Plymouth and have proudly policed Plymouth my whole career. I have worked on a variety of Departments including the Proactive team, sexual offences team and Op Converter who deal with prolific offenders. I have been a Detective for just under 2 years, working on a variety of jobs and leading investigations at court. I have only just joined the DCT but find it a very enjoyable role to be in and hope to get to know our partner agencies better over the coming months” “My name is Graeme Kirkup, I have been a Police Officer for 29 years and have served in the DCT for the past 9 years. I have worked in support of many historical Pride events and linked in around engagement work with the Out Youth group, Eddystone Trust Outreach work, Schools Respecting Differences projects to name a few. I am also very nice and make a nice cup of tea although I am often guilty of eating all the biscuits !!!!”

the ground breaking bookshop run by Prudence de Villiers and Gay Jones) which will break new ground for the archive with the stories there being used as inspiration for a series of new plays. More information can be found in the brochure. Johnny Mercer MP, said: ‘It’s great to see Plymouth Pride back on the Hoe again and hopefully we will see it outperform last year’s event. Today’s Plymouth Pride is also a good reminder of the projects Pride in Plymouth undertake during the year that ‘Bring People Together’ and how they contribute in making days like today such a success.’
We participated in Plymouth’s History month with a heritage walk around the city as part of May’s special event and Pride in Plymouth’s move to the Plymouth School of Creative Arts means that the community archive now has a home in The Red House on Millbay Road. We’re also very excited by the launch of the “In Other Words” project (named after

Pride in Plymouth is a community interest company or social enterprise that is run on a not for profit basis to support the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgendered communities of Plymouth. There are currently 3 directors of this company, Mark Ayres, Alan Butler, and Joanna Pine although we are looking at expanding this hub of people. This group is supported through the efforts of a fantastic collection of over thirty people who make up the Pride Event Organising Group and, beyond this, we connect with many more people from Plymouth’s LGB and T communities through ongoing events and meetings taking place throughout the year. Our regular coffee group “Expresso Yourself ” takes place on the third Wednesday of each month at Plymouth Arts Centre and we have events planned in the next few months around Hate Crime Awareness Week and World AIDS day. In addition to this we maintain a healthy social media presence with over 1750 likes on Facebook and over 3200 followers on Twitter. Visit our website at http:// prideinplymouth.org.uk , like the “Pride in Plymouth” page on Facebook or follow us on twitter @PrideinPlymouth. Earlier this year we took the exciting step of moving into an office at the Plymouth School of prideinplymouth.org.uk

Creative Arts and now “The Red House” as it’s affectionately known provides us with a base of operation and a home for the award winning Plymouth LGBT Community Archive. The fact that it’s such an amazing place full of energy and positivity for the next generation of the Plymouth community just adds to the fun! facilitated by the Plymouth Octopus Project. In particular, the Community Events network which we were involved in setting up. We’re also about to set up a Pride in Plymouth Timebank in conjunction with Timebank South West. Timebanking is an informal, flexible volunteer network designed to fit around people’s lifestyles, where people offer only what they want to offer when they want to offer it. Its flexibility makes it accessible for a wide range of people to get involved and will enable us to reach out to LGBT people who may not be able to participate in more traditional forms of volunteering. Please keep in touch for more details. We work on a number of projects such as a recent health survey on behalf of Healthwatch Plymouth and, our archive group, are about to commence an exciting Vital Sparks funded Plymouth Culture project which will culminate in new performances at the Barbican Theatre. There’s never been a more exciting time to get involved with Pride in Plymouth so come along to an event, join in via social media, call us at 07935306029 or drop us a line at hello@prideinplymouth.org.uk Here’s a few people who have . . . We work very closely with many of statutory agencies in the city such as Plymouth and West Devon Police where we sit on the local reference group and provide independent advisors in a number of areas round Learning and Development and, in particular, Hate Crime. We are also a third party reporting centre in this respect so can report homophobic or transphobic crimes and incidents on your behalf if you do not feel in a position to do so yourself. We also work with Plymouth City Council’s Social Inclusion department and sit on a number of community and voluntary sector networks
Pride can make a real difference to people’s lives and to how they feel about their place in the city – Jo
