WELCOME
W
e have had a fabulous summer. That’s down to the long streaks of glorious sunshine, England’s fleeting World Cup success, the joys of Wimbledon (or rather, the joys of strawberries & cream) and of course the exciting summer calendar of events that have taken place across Lincolnshire.
That being said...we’re looking forward to lighting the fire, getting the duvet back on the bed and dare I say it? Rain! We’ve decided to celebrate the up and coming colder climates in our September edition. It’s an exciting month, especially for the Bateman family. Batemans Brewery is celebrating 100 years of being Lincolnshire’s oldest wine and spirit merchant so we speak to the fourth generation brewer Stuart Bateman about the family’s journey to becoming a household name in the county. Country pursuits are of course a highlight of the colder months in this rural county, so enjoy our comprehensive guide to shooting game, how to train a gundog, the game shooting calendar and top tips for even the most experienced of guns. With best wishes for a great month!

Accidents on holiday abroad: just where do you stand? By Steve Hennegan, Partner in the Personal Injury team at Wilkin Chapman solicitors.
MORE than 60-million of us will travel abroad this year – many enjoying annual vacations booked through high street or online agents. Almost all will return with no problems at all. However, with more people than ever seeking the perfect get-away, there are risks. Accidents do happen, and if they occur mid-way through your holiday, there will be a rush of issues running through your mind. The most common accidents abroad include slips, trips or falls (within hotels with pools and sports/play facilities), injuries in hired vehicles or on public transport and accidents on excursions. The severity of the accident and the circumstances that led to the subsequent injury will of course determine your best course of action, which will be pursued when you arrive home. But there are some essentials that will assist with any legal claim for compensation. For example:
• It is vital you keep all your documents, including receipts from booked excursions, all your holiday details (print them off if booked online), and rental agreements.
• Evidence is extremely helpful also pictures of uneven surfaces, along with dated notes of what was said to you at the time, with full details of who said what.
“Prevention is always better than cure ”
• Make sure any accident or incident is reported to the holiday representative at your resort or the hotel you are staying in, so it’s all recorded and investigated to avoid other similar incidents if nothing else! • Of course, there is also the issue of an accident affecting your work back home. Without doubt, you should inform your employer as soon as possible, but what if your injury renders you unfit for work indefinitely? Holiday accident claims and the ramifications that go with them, can be more difficult than other types of claim, as typically your claim may well be made in the country of your accident, and, therefore, potentially subject to the law of that country.
This, in turn, may affect your rights or compensation amount and therefore specialist legal advice to help you plough through this potential minefield is essential, as well as supporting you through any subsequent employment issues.
Finally, prevention is always better than cure and if you take out the correct insurances for your trip, book with ATOL and ABTA protected companies and ensure adequate checks are made on private excursions, then you are going along way to making sure your break is trouble free. For more information, please contact Steve Hennegan at Wilkin Chapman on 01522 512345, email steve.hennegan@wilkinchapman.co.uk or visit wilkinchapman.co.uk

SHOOTING IN LINCOLNSHIRE
Perhaps you’re part of the shooting community, perhaps you’re not, either way, you can’t ignore the fact that from September through to february it is rather exciting to see local pub’s car parks jam packed full of Land Rovers (other 4x4’s are available), men and women unabashedly in plus-fours, socks pulled up to the top of their shins and shirt sleeves rolled up to their elbows. If the fellows have had a good day, you can be assured that the pub will have similar positive vibes to those after a successful rugby match, beer and wine will be flowing and conversation will be all about the day, “didn’t the birds fly well!”
Before you start feeling left out, now is the time to get yourself involved. The shooting industry is extremely welcoming to all communities, ages, and unlike many sports, you don’t have to be particularly athletic to join in. Shooting is also gaining in popularity with the ladies. The field recently reported that women shots have increased from 1,000 to 12,000 in recent years, the remarkable growth in popularity of driven shooting has brought jobs and investment into the countryside, including into many areas where there are few opportunities for the rural economy to diversify from traditional farming businesses. We’re in an area where tuition and seriously good kit is at our fingertips. We are also surrounded by beautiful countryside that is managed by gamekeepers for the soul purpose of a great day shooting.
Pass the Port
If you have trouble accepting that shooting game is a ‘sport,’ consider that every year, this country shoots around 25 million game birds. It seems like a staggering amount unil you realise that the uk poultry industry slaughters 82 million a month, The lunch at a shoot should many of which will have never set foot in include local pork pies, port, woodland as wild game has. champagne, exciting gins, honey & mustard sausages, cold hams, cheese really go for it!
To begin, you will feel more comfortable having some lessons on clays rather than live game. That way, you can get your eye in and have more confidence on the day. however, you don’t have to shoot to take part. for lessons on the clays, there are several places to go in this area including Pinewood Shooting ground in north Lincolnshire, grimsthorpe Estate Shooting ground further south or if you want an instructor who is verging on famous for their success and experience, you can go to holland & holland in middlesex.
Above & Right: As much as the day is about shooting, lunch is important too!
20
at this stage, you don’t need a shotgun certificate and its a good idea not to rush into anything until you’re sure you enjoy it. not only will lessons teach you how to shoot, but the instructors will make sure you understand everything to do with gun safety. It’s vital information that you must abide my at all times to keep yourself and others safe.

How to Clean a Gun...
After a day’s shooting, you’ll be really surprised how much muck is left behind in your barrells. To keep your shotgun in perfect working order you need to regular clean and oil it then it’s not a bad idea to have is serviced at the end of the season. n Inspect the barrels. Examine the bores, then check whether there is any moisture remaining hidden under the extractors or along the crevice between the rib and the barrel tubes. n After this, run a cleaning patch (you can get these from the gunsmiths) through the bores and look for leading in the chokes, streaks in the bores or a build up of plastic in the chambers. n You may have to apply a bit of force to polish the dirt out but if you’re still struggling, try a bristle brush or even a ‘bronze’ brush. n After a really tough day, or perhaps if you’ve missed a clean inbetween shoots, you might want to use a special purpose solvent or use wire wool with a lubricant. When your patches come out clean, you’ve finished! n You may also want to inspect your gun for cosmetic problems such as a dent or scratch to the bluing. Lightly oil a cloth (if you don’t have any just rip up an old tshirt) and polish the bores with the oil. n To clean the crevices around the shotgun, you will find nothing more effective than a cotton bud. n Finally, wipe all surfaces of the shotgun with clean paper or cloth, finishing with your oily rag to give it a shine for next time it’s out of the gun cabinet. If you’re not a fan of getting your hands dirty, you can check your gun in at a professional gunsmiths where they will clean and service the gun for you. n

‘You’ll find that driven game shooting is not only a formal, social occasion; it’s also fantastic sport the more you get into it, the more you’ll know...” If after your first go you’re enjoying it, start the application for your shotgun certificate as it can take some time to process. you’ll need to visit the Countryside alliance website and fill in an application for the grand or Renewal of a firearm and/or Shotgun certificate. While you’re on their website, read through the Code of good Shooting Practise and take it all in. once your Shotgun Certificate has processed, you can visit your local gunsmiths and find a gun that fits your form. Everyone is different and a shotgun is a very personal piece of equipment. now all you need is cartridges, a hip-flask and some trendy tweed plus-fours!
you’ll find that driven game shooting is not only a formal, social occasion; it’s also fantastic sport, the more you get into it, the more you’ll know. you may either be invited by word of mouth to a local shoot or you’ll have to do some research and book into one, but once you get out there and meet people you’ll find that things just open up. at the start of the day’s shooting, each gun will draw their peg number. make sure you don’t forget yours! The peg system is used so nobody gets the best position all the time. at the end of every drive each gun will move up, a couple of peg positions.
This makes the day fair and means everyone gets to shoot in the centre, and at the edges, of the line. you might find you’re in the hot-spot on most drives, or you might be out of the shooting all day - but that’s the classic “luck of the draw!”
So this season we say throw yourself into it. Buy some game to try at home, cook some pheasant goujons, book a days shooting, wear your most flattering tweed and support the British countryside for all it’s worth. n 23

Once you’re confident that your dog has what it takes to pick up on a shoot, you can approach the organisers and ask if they want assistance.
a remarkable bird that is almost extinct in other countries, the golden Plover is rarely shot here too.
Possibly the most well-known game bird, pheasants come in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting.
A Day For ThE dogS
If you’re not sure you’re ready, you need to be sure that your dog is happy to be left in the car without making a fuss. They should also be accustomed to being in company with other people and dogs. It must have picked up cold game gently and know to bring it to hand.Your dog should also have excellent recall. It would be ideal if you dog has some previous experience of picking up warm game. n

is month we’ve an exclusive interview with fourth generation brewer Stuart Bateman, as Batemans Brewery celebrates 100 years as the oldest wine and spirit merchant in Lincolnshire and 40 years since XXXB was first produced... ONE WORD; BEER. That was Stuart Bateman’s answer when I asked what he was most passionate about and what he enjoyed the most about being a fourth generation brewer and the owner of one of the biggest and most well known businesses in Lincolnshire. If you live in Lincolnshire, there is no doubt that you would have heard of Batemans. your local may well be a Batemans pub; there are over 30 just across Lincolnshire.
But the pubs are just a small side of this enormous business. from beer production to wine and spirits and free trade to even the wedding industry, Stuart has diversified the company immensely. This empire started with his great grandfather george Bateman in 1874, and I spoke to Stuart to discover more about the history of the beer we yellow Bellies all know and love... So your great grandfather George Bateman founded the business in 1874?
yes, that’s correct. my great grandfather was a farmer. Back in his time in the 19th century, the landworkers were paid in three parts; firstly a wage, then some of the produce harvested and also beer.
george Bateman knew the farming market, and knew the demand for beer for the landworkers, so decided to finish farming altogether and start a brewery in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire. And it was a success?
It was a tremendous success. The landworkers loved the beer and the local farmers did too. my great grandfather continued to run the business until he handed it down to my grandfather harry Bateman in the 20th century. his part was largely turning the brewery into more of a commercial operation and diversifying the business from simply producing beer. My father worked primarily on changing the pub licences in the 1950s. ey were very restricting. You couldn’t serve wine and spirits in pubs for a long time, and you couldn’t drink beer standing up; you had to sit down to enjoy your pint! He changed the laws alongside national breweries and publicans.
How did he diversify the business, what was his legacy?
That is what we’re celebrating this year. harry wanted to offer wine and spirits too and so began JE Ridlington & Son. This part of our business is still operating today, making it the oldest specialist wine and spirit company in Lincolnshire. he didn’t have it all smooth sailing though. harry owned the company during the World Wars, and all of Britain had to be focused on the war effort. Beer in particular was heavily rationed unless it was contributing to the war effort.
Like many businesses during this time, he wanted to maintain his profitable business but also wanted to support the country. he managed to do both. The steelworkers in Scunthorpe were working on tanks and machinery for our soldiers, so harry managed to secure a licence to sell extra beer to the steelworkers; beer was considered a recreational activity to boost morale for the workers. he’s also responsible for starting the publican side of our business, opening a few pubs in Lincolnshire - this was at a time where there were four or five pubs in every village. Was it your father who expanded the pub trade for Batemans?
yes, after harry handed down the business to my father george in the 1950s, he immediately began buying a great deal more pubs across the county.
however, pub licences were an enormous problem for him in the 1950s. Pubs carried ‘perpendicular licences,’ which was a law at the time meaning you couldn’t drink standing up (perpendicular). you had to sit down in the 1950s to drink a pint of beer or you were breaking the law. That sounds ridiculous!
It was a very silly law, and meant that people couldn’t enjoy a drink by the bar. There were many other restricting laws. for example, wines and spirits weren’t allowed to be served alongside beer in pubs. This meant that many women weren’t going into pubs, so the publican trade was missing out on half the population.
Because of all the laws, my father made a conscious effort to change the law and learnt more about licences. he spent a lot of time and money changing them, and national companies soon backed him. after changing the laws and starting conversations with national breweries, my father changed the way Batemans worked. he agreed to sell specified volumes of their beer in our pubs and our beer in their pubs, meaning we could offer so much more variety to customers and people could enjoy Batemans in more pubs. When did you get involved with the business?
I always knew I wanted to take over the business and carry on our family’s heritage, but I wanted to do something entirely independent first of all. I studied business and sports management, as it would still help for my future in the family business, and I was really passionate about sports. I was a sports teacher for a couple of years before I decided to start at Batemans. I trained at mansfield Brewery, working in the brewhouse, learning the brewing process, bottling process, sales, pub management, off trade and exporting before moving back to Wainfleet in 1987. I became the assistant managing director and worked alongside my sister Jackie who is also a director in the business. What was it like, how was the business coping when you joined?
unfortunately, there were some massive debts that we had incurred in helping to retain the independence of the company. That meant we had to really develop the sales side of the business to raise funds. It also unfortunately meant we had to sell a few pubs and had to renegotiate trade agreements.
The sales side of the business took off and was extremely successful. In the 1990s Carlsberg approached us with a bid to purchase this side of the company. The amount they paid for it was exactly the same amount of money we had to borrow from the banks to retain our independence, so we had to do this. 33

Without sales, how did you take Batemans Brewery forward?
Well, we couldn’t develop a sales team for another six years, so we focused on our own pubs, and on sending beer outside of the county. We looked at the supermarket trade too and generally improved the rest of the business. When the six year contract expired, we developed the sales side again to be bigger than what we sold it to Carlsberg before. We had retained our independence and managed to improve all the other areas of the business so it was a bold move but a good one. What an achievement! What has been your proudest moment?
We won at the Publican awards for two years in a row, which was absolutely phenomenal considering we were the smallest company in the group up against the likes of marstons and fullers. our XXXB won best beer at the great British Beer festival and has won premium beer of the year four times. We’ve won the CamRa beer of Britain awards and many others. I’m also proud of how much we have been able to diversify the business. We opened the visitors’ centre in 2002 - the brewery itself with the paddocks outside and the river running nearby is just beautiful so it made sense to make the most of that - opened a small bar in the bottom of the windmill, we host events, have a caravan park on site, opened a bistro, shop and training facilities, provide brewery tours and we have a licence to hold weddings. You mentioned XXXB. It’s had 40 years of success then?
yes, it has been 40 years since we first made our premium beer. We first created it at 4.8% aBV, but because the alcohol industry is one of the most heavily taxed, and it’s calculated by aBV, we reduced it to 4.5% and passed this saving onto our customers. Because it’s the anniversary of the beer this year, we reintroduced the original recipe, so it’s back to 4.8% aBV, and sales are up 26% so it looks like it’s here to stay!
You’ve achieved a lot but what do you enjoy
the most about your job?
one word; beer. Well actually three. Beer, pubs and people. I love all of those things! It’s a dream job and it doesn’t feel like work at all. I love creating new recipes, I love being able to talk to people all day and I don’t mind sampling beer! We’re constantly changing the business with the constantly changing market; the days of asking for your usual in your local are gone. ‘Promiscuous drinkers’ seem to have taken over, so you need to offer a wide variety nowadays.
And what is the variety at Batemans?
We have our four classic beers - our bitter XB, our blonde american style IPa yella Belly, our premium beer XXXB and our dark beer Salem Porter. our Skull & Spanners is also a
permanent beer created by Lincolnshire’s guy martin and served in his sister’s pub the marrowbone & Cleaver. We have a different beer launched each month through the Salem Brew Co brand, and these are infused with fresh fruit. our legends change regularly and these are speciality one-off beers we have done in the past that were a success. We do a lot of special beers like Last Post in november and our popular Rosey nosey bitter at Christmas. By the end of the year, we will have produced 21 different kinds of beer. You’re passionate about beer. What else do you enjoy?
I love sport. my claim to fame is that I scored the last goal at Wembley before it was knocked down in a charity match for Carlsberg! I scored the last penalty of the game.
I support the local football and rugby teams and held the Skegness grammar School’s sprint record for 32 years! I support grimsby Town and I also play guitar in my spare time. my three children also keep me busy away from work. Are they planning on following you into the family business?
Well harrison, who’s 23, is studying business and marketing at university and has just completed a work placement at marstons, and my other son Edward, 20, is also studying business and marketing at Leeds currently and is hoping to get a work placement too.
my youngest, Eliza, 16, currently wants to become a professional surfer and I’m encouraging her to follow her dream! all of them work at the brewery during the holidays though; harrison as a tour guide, Edward as a drayman and Eliza as a waitress. I’ve been with my wife Rachael for 24 years and we met at work; she started as sales manager for the business in 1992 and we married in 1994. She often refers to me as a workaholic but I disagree. I don’t regard work as ‘work,’ and I truly enjoy every part of what I do. I feel privileged to have been a part of the history of Batemans Brewery. I’m excited for its future, and for the imminent fifth generation soon to join the team.

FOOD & DRINK
The Thatched Cottage,
SuTTERTon
Pubs were an important part of British culture, and there would be four or five to every village. They still most definitely are, but now our pubs have had to adapt to offer a dining experience too. The Thatched Cottage in Sutterton has retained its past with a beautiful 17th century thatched front, but added a modern twist in its food provisions and its newly extended restaurant... Quaint little pubs are often hard to come by these days. British pub culture is still prevalent, but not what it once was.
In our opinion, there is a positive side to it; instead of several pubs in a village all offering beer and nothing much else, one pub offers a variety of drink and food too, competing with neighbouring village pubs as people have become more willing to travel for a good dining experience. The rarity of these little gems too ensure they’re always a treat and a special place to visit.
I can guarantee that a travel to the Thatched Cottage in Sutterton is most assuredly worth the journey, if not for the food but for its beautiful uniqueness and history.
It’s a 17th Century pub, grade II listed and has maintained its traditional thatched roof and beamed ceilings inside. This is down to quite a bit of restoration and a dedicated family that were over the moon at their find.
“THE THATCHED COTTAGE IS A QUAINT 17TH CENTURY RESTAURANT WITH A MODERN RESTORATION TO THE BACK...”

meet the CHEF VICKI DILLAMORE, CHEF & MANAGER
“my father would always say ‘one day, we’ll own a pub,’” says Vicki dillamore, manager of the Thatched Cottage. “It’s just fantastic that, that dream has finally come true!” murray Chambers and his business partner Chris dixon decided to buy The Thatched Cottage, hoping to turn it into the bucolic country location they had hoped for.
“We have had to do a lot of work to the place,” says Vicki. “It definitely wouldn’t have survived another winter, let’s put it that way. We had to get the roof re-thatched and had to carry out a lot of restoration inside.” “We were happy with the size of the pub but we wanted to extend the restaurant. We maintained the traditional country pub feel as best we could and as you go further into the extended part, it feels more modern but
Food History: Vicki was originally a chef before opening the Thatched Cottage, and has had training in front and back of house. Food Wisdom: “Stay calm in the kitchen and don’t lose your head!” Food Heaven: “I absolutely love anything with lamb.” Food Hell: “It’s got to be oysters! No one likes them do they?”

the extended part, it feels more modern but still keeping that traditional feel.”
The family have big plans for the Thatched Cottage as it comes with a great amount of land behind it.
Part of this, they have dedicated to an outdoor seating area, but beyond that, there is to be a fishing lake, woodland walk and a 20 touring caravan park on the eight acre site. There is a beautiful natural burial area too. “It’s about being able to offer so much more and bringing more and more people to the Thatched Cottage. With a caravan park, we can offer breakfast to tourists too.”

Vicki, although manager of the restaurant, works alongside the 15 members of staff as front of house, administration and even in the kitchen too. Sharon Ealham is bar manager.
“I’m originally a chef ! I’ve completed a three year catering course and qualified in front and back of house. I like to help out in the kitchen alongside our head and sous chefs Sean and Tom.”
The Thatched Cottage has only been reopened since march, and Vicki says they’ve never not had a fully booked friday and Saturday night.
“It’s just so busy, and it’s clear that there was plenty of space in this area for us to enter the market. I think the general look and feel of our restaurant and pub tends to attract a lot of people too, which is why we decided to name it for exactly what it is, as that’s how they will remember us anyway. It’s a really unique selling point we’re quite proud of.”
If you have any doubts about the food, rest assured it’s superb. Vicki and her team of chefs know exactly what they’re doing and what’s important to local people.
“We use local producers where we can like Boston Sausage, m&h Butchers, fresh drop and Pilgrim foods. all the food we make is fresh and homemade, so none of your typical frozen pub lasagne and desserts.” on our visit, we enjoyed two starters; the spiced belly pork with roasted hazelnuts and carrot purée, and a trio of pan fried scallops with parsley purée, crispy parma ham and edible flowers.
The attention to detail in these dishes alone was evident, and it’s clear that the Thatched Cottage is aimed at people who want a real treat at the weekend or for a special occasion.
for the mains, we were served a seabass fillet with sautéed jersey royals, broad beans, beurre blanc and brown shrimp, and herb crusted lamb rump with potato terrine, peas a la francaise and salsa verde. It’s clear the Thatched Cottage serves hearty pub meals with a professional twist and touch of class.
Warm duck breast salad with pickled and charred vegetables, honey and orange vinaigrette, £17.
Chicken supreme with chorizo and new potato tartlet and chicken veloute, £17. Dessert
Banoffee tartlet, with caramelised bananas and banana ice cream, £6. Chocolate and chilli tart with creme fraiche, £6.

While it’s resting, make the egg salad. Boil the potatoes in water for about 15 minutes. hardboil the fairburn’s eggs. meanwhile, mix together the mustard, sour cream, mayonnaise, a dash of red wine vinegar and a pinch of sea salt. Cut the cooked potatoes and toss with the dressing, then leave to cool. Peel and cut the eggs into quarters and add to the salad. Place on the table for guests to help themselves to. Carve the gammon.

SCHOOLS & COLLEGES
Schools & Education
Stamford Endowed Schools
“Tailored, personalised education at every level...” The Stamford Endowed Schools are three independent schools working together to provide a first-class education to pupils aged 3 to 18.
Boys and girls are taught together at the nursery and junior school before splitting to the respective boys and girls senior schools until the age of 16.
This allows for a more tailored and personalised education at every level, either as day pupils or as boarders, before coming back together in sixth form. The convenient and extensive bus route service operating across Lincolnshire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire covering over 25 stops spanning as far as newark, Bourne, oakham and Stilton, makes the schools easily accessible across region. alternatively, weekly and full boarding options are popular.
Set in a beautiful market town with acres of open land, students enjoy extensive facilities both in and out of the classroom at Stamford Endowed Schools. The schools, which are steeped in heritage dating back to 1532 together with their extended communities, provide an unusually broad range of opportunities to inspire pupils, encourage curiosity and instil a love of learning.
The Schools take pride in helping develop well-rounded individuals who achieve their full potential, nurturing them to become who they want to be. Independent minds are at the heart of the schools, preparing Stamfordians for the 21st Century Boardroom, wherever and whatever that may be.

Lincoln Minster Preparatory “Respect, commitment, integrity and care...”
“As a head teacher, I am often asked what makes an excellent education. of course it is many things, but the main part of my answer to such a question remains the same.” “I think it is an education that focuses on values like respect, commitment, integrity, care; the list is endless. But, it is the way in which those personal qualities are developed by the school and through the opportunities on offer that makes an excellent education and indeed a school.”
“I think how you do things can matter more to a child’s success than the specific result. The old adage of, ‘how one plays and what one plays for, that alone reveals the man,’ has never been so important in the world our children are growing up in. The Lincoln minster Preparatory School is all about character and attitude, along 54
with academic rigour; an education that stands apart in the values and attitudes of its pupils. Popular opinion seems to dictate that education or school cannot do both in terms of academic success and development of character. I would say that a school is not delivering unless it does both. a school must focus on academic expectations but at the same time ensure that the curriculum is broad and varied to develop personal, social and emotional development.”
“We are proud of all we achieve at Lincoln minster Prep, including our academic results which have led to our position in the Top 50 Prep Schools. In short, an excellent school delivers on both; character building and academic excellence.’ n Call the school on 01522 551300 or vsit lincolnminsterschool.co.uk or Lindum Street, Lincoln LN2 5RW.

Worksop College
“Right from the start, life is a musical”
How important is music in a child’s early development? music Teacher at Ranby house School, dr. myfanwy Walters discusses the powerful contribution music can make in a child’s early learning.
“Children find their singing voice somewhere between two and three years of age. Some children naturally sing in tune, some don’t, but with practice and encouragement, all will sing well with few exceptions. What makes a musical child is not an inborn talent, but a supportive environment where music and singing are part of everyday life.”
“from helping with coordination and language skills to cognitive development, music is helpful. Singing demands focused attention and careful listening, important skills for all areas of learning. music and rhyme increase a child’s ability in spatial reasoning, enhancing their abilities in maths and
science. Recognising different patterns of sound is central to developing literacy skills as well as musical ones.”
“however last autumn, the chief of ofsted warned that the demise of nursery rhymes was contributing to the number of young children starting school with impaired language and communication skills.”
“at Worksop College and Ranby house, the importance of music is recognised from the beginning, with specialist teaching from age three to 18. In addition to developing musical skills, music can improve self-esteem and independence.” “It is never too early to introduce your child to music. Singing nursery rhymes together is one of the best ways to interact.” “above all, singing is fun, will help to get your child off to a flying start and is a wonderful way to bond with your child.”

ROBERT DOUGHTY
CONSULTANCY LIMITED Robert Doughty Consultancy Limited is a multidisciplinary town planning, landscape architecture and architecture practice in Helpringham, near Sleaford. It was founded in 1984 and employs 16 staff including Craig Smith, a RIBA Chartered Architect, who was appointed in 2016 to strengthen the consultancy design team. The consultancy has recently designed and obtained planning permission for four bespoke and contemporary family homes in Langrick, Boothby Graffoe, Long Sutton and Rutland.
The dwelling in Langrick is significant, because it will sit within the grounds of a Grade II Listed Building. This planning success concludes almost 2 years of preapplication discussions with East Lindsey District Council. At Boothby Graffoe the site presented several challenges, not least a prior planning refusal, its location in a Conservation Area and a designated Area of Great Landscape Value (The Lincoln Cliff), as well as having extensive tree cover with trees protected by the Conservation Area status and individual Tree Preservation Orders and a sloping topography.
In Long Sutton the consultancy designed and obtained planning permission for its first
Langrick
‘Paragraph 55’ dwelling. The house will be substantial at 11,500sqft.
The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) does not allow new isolated homes to be built in the countryside unless there are special circumstances. Paragraph 55 of the NPPF describes one such circumstance as requiring the design of a dwelling to be ‘truly outstanding or innovative’ and one that should ‘reflect the highest standards in architecture’.
A recent article in the Architects’ Journal revealed that in the past six years, of the 113 recorded planning applications for Paragraph 55 homes, only 66 where approved. The consultancy is therefore delighted that their scheme has won approval. This house is designed to appear as a sculptural object set within the fenland landscape.
At Wing in Rutland, the consultancy designed and obtained planning permission for a 7 bedroom family home. Schemes for smaller dwellings designed by other companies had previously been refused planning permission for this site, thus this project in particular demonstrates the consultancy’s ability to add value to a project through good design. The dwelling will replace several existing buildings and be positioned to take advantage of the site’s sloping topography. It will benefit from high levels of natural light and passive solar gain with the vast majority of living spaces being south-facing. n
A revised NPPF was published in July this year and paragraph 55 is replaced with paragraph 79.

It will feature a dramatic triple-height space over the main living area which can also be viewed from a gallery landing on the first floor.
Innovative Cross Laminated Timber panels (CLT) are proposed for both the roof and the walls of the first floor. Some of these panels will be exposed internally, will require no further finishing and will reveal the method of construction inside the dwelling. The house will also be zero-carbon.

THE ROFFEY,
NORTH THORESBY
Above: One of the many outdoor seating areas and the modern kitchen.
Scandinavian design is an aesthetic marked by minimalism and functionality. It’s a very modern approach to interior design, and one that has been executed perfectly in the Roffey, a home in north Thoresby.
The property’s location is highly sought after, in a beautiful village between Louth and grimsby, and its contemporary style only makes it more appealing if you’re looking to retreat to the Wolds with views spanning across the stretching landscape.
In fact the home isn’t limited on views at all, featuring large floor to ceiling windows throughout the rooms.
originally constructed during the 1960s, this individual house has been transformed with meticulous attention to detail into the stunning property now presented.
The house has rendered principal walls enhanced by subtle cedarwood panelling and interspersed with large windows, patio doors and glazed panels.
you’re welcomed by a sweeping driveway through a sylvan approach to a parking forecourt and a large attached garage with drive-through option.
Location: Eight miles from Louth, Eight miles from grimsby. Style: a Scandinavian 60s home with a simple contemporary design and floor to ceiling windows. Bedrooms: four, all with built in wadrobes and balconies, and the main features an en suite. Receptions: Three, currently arranged as living/dining kitchen, lounge and study. Other Features: Summer house, large garage and two balconies. Price: £575,000.
on entering the home, you go through an elegant glazed entrance and hallway, which features a large cloak room, study, bathroom, and access to the lounge and kitchen.
The highlight of the house is the stunning living/dining kitchen flooded with light from three patio doors and fitted with a smart range of units in gloss white with quartz work surfaces and breakfast bar. 61

The lounge has fully-glazed front and rear walls, acting like a built-in conservatory, high mono-pitched ceilings and an enormous modern feature fireplace with stove. There are four bedrooms, and the master and guest bedrooms all enjoy open field views through patio doors onto a rear glazed balcony.
There is a second balcony with patio doors from bedrooms three and four at the front of the house, so all the bedrooms have access to an open balcony. upstairs, there is a contemporary bathroom and en suite shower room too, and there are built in wardrobes in every bedroom.
as if this property wasn’t beautiful enough, the gardens and exterior to the property is fantastic. It benefits from beautiful mature gardens with an array of exterior lighting, 62
multiple seating areas and planting. The deckings and patios surrounding the garden lead to a purpose built summer house.
This is used as a log cabin/summer house by the current owners, and they hide a tool store and small cupboard just behind to maintain the lawns.
It’s a very social area outdoors and a large space too when opening the patio doors to the main living/dining kitchen room.
“THE GARDEN AREA IS VERY SOCIABLE WITH PATIOS AND DECKING THROUGHOUT, FORMAL LAWNS AND LARGE DOUBLE PATIO DOORS THAT OPEN UP FROM THE KITCHEN, DINING AND LIVING SPACE...”
This house has been finished to a truly exceptional standard from the outdoor decking areas to the solid oak flooring throughout the first floor.
What draws your eye to the home is how natural and summery it looks. It makes you feel like you should be looking out to the sea, but instead of sand, you have the lush vibrant green fields of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

madE By VERnon InTERIoRS designing and decorating your home can be a struggle, especially when there are several different specialists you have to contact to get the job done. Take all of that stress away with the experts at Vernon Interiors... Interior design can be a hobby and a passion, but it can also be a real struggle. It involves contacting a curtains and blinds specialist, an interior designer, a cabinet maker and visiting various decoration, bed and furniture stores. Take all the stress away from that by visiting Vernon Interiors, your one stop shop for all of the above and more, specialising in luxury and quality brands.
It’s a family business that has recently fallen into the hands of managing director James Vernon, and the company has been around since 1982 with showrooms in Skegness and Ingoldmells.
“We’re proud to say that we have a dedicated showroom for karndean design flooring, a high end flooring company that gives you a natural flooring effect without the hassle,” says James. “They’re designed to be easy to look after but maintaining that high quality style you would like from natural flooring.” “We’re also the only showroom in the area that stocks and provides amtico flooring. “our carpet range includes high end brands like axminster, ulster, Cormar, Brintons and Brontë Carpets.” When James’s father launched Vernon Interiors, he specialised in flooring, but they soon found that there was a gap in the market for a company that can offer a complete design service.

The kitchen is the heart of any home. It’s the place a family comes together to talk, eat, cook and entertain, the most important room to cherish and enjoy, so make sure it’s something you can take pride in. Richwood Cabinet makers this month present a kitchen you can be proud of... 78
The kitchen is the most important room in the house, but also the hardest room to redecorate.
Too much decoration can clutter a kitchen, it has to be a very practical space and often, you will start with just the cabinets and end up changing the flooring, lighting, appliances and farrow & Ball shade too.
There are so many different elements to redesigning and creating a new kitchen, but alex Richardson from Richwood Cabinet makers takes all of the stress away. alex took over Richwood Cabinet makers several years ago, taking over the profession from his father. Before then he worked at Vale garden houses for two years building

Sadly, alan’s career was abruptly ended by the discovery of a brain tumour in 2010, later followed by a cancer diagnosis for which he continues to receive treatment. fortunately, alan’s passion, drive and determination, are all characteristics inherited by his son alex, and the Richwood name is once again gaining local recognition as the business goes from strength to strength.
his experience and knowledge of the traditional and complicated craft of cabinet making.
It was worth it as alex’s services are now in high demand as more and more people discover his work.
his latest project was a beautiful kitchen featuring Silestone worktops, butler sink, island in Stiffkey Blue, built-in cabinetry in Cornforth White and integrated appliances throughout.
The beautiful kitchen belongs to Liam north, an electrician who discovered alex’s work through a shared customer. “alex was creating an enormous built-in bookcase for a client whilst I was fitting the surround LEd lighting,” says Liam.
“I was really impressed with the detail and quality of the finishing. I had just bought a new house so decided alex would be the perfect person to fit the kitchen.”
“Combining my experience, his craftsmanship and my brothers knowledge as a joiner, we came up with a design for what was just a shell at the time.” he did an absolutely fantastic job and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. alex handpainted the cabinets and took real care to ensure the finish was perfect.”
Call alex today to get your kitchen booked in for a refurbishment, renovation or a newly fitted kitchen, discuss ideas and bring Richwood into the heart of your home.
an apprenticeship and furniture making course offered at newark College meant alex could work with his dad at Richwood, whilst gaining a qualification in cabinetmaking.
Whilst understandably sad that his dad is no longer able to help him out with the practical aspects of running Richwood, alex is pleased that alan is around and available to provide advice and encouragement.
hopefully, Richwood will continue to flourish under alex’s management and, judging by feedback received from his customers so far, he’s not going far wrong! n For more information, call Alex on 07534 808903, richwood-cabinetmakers@hotmail.com.

OUTDOORS
affaIR A Family
Just outside Wragby is a hidden paradise of herbaceous perennials and woodland walks. e oasis of greenery - a rare find after the scorching weather we’ve had this year - is Goltho Gardens, a family project for Debbie Hollingworth, her husband, sister and parents... Words & Images: Tilly Wilkinson.

We’ve had several weeks of constant sun, not a single drop of water, and a hose pipe ban is looming as I write this. Therefore, I had my worries when visiting goltho gardens just outside of Wragby, expecting scorched lawns and bleached borders.
dEBBIE, Goltho Gardener
Debbie has always had a passion for gardening since she moved out and had her own space to maintain. She has a City maintenance like mowing & Guilds in flower and strimming, while she I was pleasantly surprised to find an oasis of greenery, arranging.
borders bursting with colour and a very happy family pleased with their small utopia.
debbie hollingworth was born and bred in Lincolnshire but moved to her current location with her family - parents Liz and ken Rashby, sister Leslie Burton and husband Sean hollingworth - 20 years ago. They had their work cut out for them with several barns to convert and a house nearly in ruin, in addition to four acres of garden, and part of a field that was still growing crops.
“We bought the barns with a vision of turning the site into a garden, nursery and tea shop,” says debbie. “But we needed to work on converting the barns first and making our homes more habitable!”
The family made goltho gardens their home after nearly two years of working on the house, and debbie had started to work on the gardens, planning and planting and laying border hedging.
“There wasn’t an awful lot to work with. We worked towards the house rather than from the house, as the field that once had crops growing in it had been newly ploughed.”
debbie had a vision of a long vista leading away from the house so she could enjoy the full extent of the garden from her window, as well as a rose garden and a flower meadow.
all her plans started to fall in place as the family came together to complete the work; her sister managed the tea shop from one of the barns, her husband worked on the hard structural work like building and landscaping, her father was in control of general 86
worked with her mother on planning the garden itself.
“The gardens are nearly complete; we focus more on keeping them tidy at the moment while we’re welcome visitors and potting in the nursery.”
The garden centres around the long vista, but there is so much more to this garden than meets the eye as you delve deeper into the shrubbery.
along the central lawn, you’ll find wide herbaceous borders that lead to a prairie garden, that was being maintained by two ladies who come to goltho gardens weekly on my visit. If you follow the path past the prairie garden, you will reach the rose garden and the peony garden in full bloom at the moment and smelling beautiful. keep walking along the main lawn and you’ll reach the bottom of the garden which was once a field.
The wildflower meadow can be found at this end of the garden just over a small bridge, and a wooded area. on the way back, you’ll

pass the autumn garden which will be in full swing by the time Pride goes to press.
This leads to the nut walk and eventually to the winter garden, ensuring there is always something of interest throughout the year.
one of the best areas of goltho gardens though has to be the ponds. There is a wonderful decking area used as a viewing point with seating to show off the lily pads covering the surface, the butterflies and dragonflies dancing across them and the willow trees flowing gently in the breeze above.
It’s the ‘magical’ part of the garden that reminds you of an alice in Wonderland scene or a painting in a fairy tale. But all of the garden is magical and truly worth seeing. With four acres for you to walk around and enjoy, and different areas

“The ponds make a really beautiful feature of the gardens. They’re truly magical with lily pads and dragonflies touching the water’s surface...” dedicated to different times of the year - plus a tea room and nursery to visit before you leave - it makes a great day out in autumn.
“Visitors will be able to see an abundance of asters and cyclamens at this time of year, and we get a lot of autumn colour,” says debbie. “We also have an opening for the national gardens Scheme in September so it’s a great time to visit and see goltho gardens for yourself.” n

WEDDINGS
a Winner’s Wedding
our sister company ukbride gives away an entire wedding to the value of up to £25,000 every year. Last year’s winners Jenny and alex recently married on the same day as the royals, and we had a chat with the bride to see how they got on... Images: Dottie Photography, 01945 773368, www.dottiephotography.co.uk.
Every Valentine’s Day we get to give away a £25,000 wedding to one lucky bride out of the 750,000 members on our website ukbride. Last year was no different when we called Jenny Collier to announce she had won the competition.
This year is particularly special as Jenny is based in Stamford. as the prize is entirely random, we have had London brides, manchester brides and even Scotland brides win, but never someone in the local area.
The two live in Stamford with daughter felicity and son oliver and tied the knot in Peterborough. They met through mutual friends and spent many months emailing each other before alex asked Jenny on a date. “It was a brilliant first date, and we both knew we would get together,” says Jenny. “We stayed in the pub until they kicked us out and just got on so well!”
Three years later, they moved in together and soon fell pregnant with daughter felicity. In September 2016, Jenny was getting ready for a charity gala ball before alex decided to pop the question at home. In february 2017, Jenny received the call from ukbride, explaining that she had won our fabulous competition. “I just couldn’t believe it! I was over the moon. Winning the prize just took all the pressure off of planning the wedding. I have

friends who are currently planning their big days, and they’re so stressed, and I just had none of that. It’s such a fabulous prize.”
“my dress was given to me by Berketex in nottingham. What I loved so much about winning is the fact I still had choice; I won my dress from Berketex but they had hundreds of styles to pick from and I found the dress of my dreams.”
“our photo booth from Cheesy Smiles was fantastic - it was great looking through all the funny photos of the guests during the day - and amanda from dottie Photography was absolutely brilliant and left us with memories we will treasure forever. get film the videographer part of the prize, gave us several films of the day too that really did capture our emotions.”
“The cake from Sophisticake was just so beautiful. It fitted with our 20s great gatsby themed venue and made a great centrepiece. We had a chocolate tier, cherry bakewell tier, vanilla sponge tier and Sophisticake’s signature fruitcake tier which was the flavour used when she made Prince Charles and Camilla’s wedding cake; another royal connection!” “Because we had won pretty much every element of our wedding, it meant we could spend extra money on things like our wedding rings which we had made bespoke, and the car which we hired for the day.” 91

- WEDDINGS -
“Our honeymoon in Mexico was courtesy of Kuoni, part of the £25,000 prize we won with UKbride..!” The couple, as we all know from watching the royal wedding that day, had perfect weather. Jenny says that she’s happy she will share her anniversary with the royal couple and it made the whole day a celebration of marriage, so all of the guests had more of a buzz about them too.
“Before walking down the aisle, I was really nervous, but when I reached the end seeing alex, I relaxed a lot more. It was an emotional day and I’m glad that I could spend a few minutes just enjoying the day with him.”
for the honeymoon, also part of the prize, Jenny, alex and felicity jetted off to Playa de Carmen in mexico, and because they had a little extra cash, decided to spend it on concierge; felicity had a personal butler who delivered milk and cookies every night! meanwhile the newlyweds relaxed in a five star hotel with the comfort of a suite and a hot tub, reflecting on their special day.

“The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently conducted research that showed that although 93% of the UK’s adults have a savings account, not many of them are achieving attractive returns due to the inertia inherent in the savings market. This is especially true for cash investments of over £250,000. “Our portal has individual secure log in details and a comprehensive dataset using optimisation and proprietary technology that can administer bespoke cash portfolios in seconds. Our service means clients can improve the term structure of their cash (from instant access up to five years) while also allowing them to ensure that they have the desired degree of protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) or European equivalents. “The service has been designed carefully so that power of instruction remains with the client and designated signatories only. This means our clients have peace of mind that their cash savings are directly held with regulated financial institutions.” More information on the service can be found on www.jchim.co.uk or contact Alan Willmont on alan@jchim.co.uk

have you ever wondered what would happen if BmW made a 21st century rival to Porsche’s 911 Carrera? The answer is here; BmW’s eighth wonder of the world, and a gT flagship for germany’s Bayerische motoren Werke...
BMW 8-Series 3.0V6 or 4.4V8
£76,270 - £100,045
Diesel is dead, long live diesel. So said the bigwigs at Bayerische motoren Werke, more commonly known by its acronym. Ever since 2014, BmW’s i8 proudly proclaimed that combustion engines were dead and electric supercars were the way forward.
Indeed, the i8 is a fine car; blending blistering performance with a degree of eco-responsibility. But liquid fuels aren’t dead yet, and since the discontinuation of the BmW 850i in 1999, BmW has been lacking a flagship gT to take the fight to Porsche’s 911, the mercedes SL and audi’s R8.
That’s not proven too much of an inconvenience for the firm, whose performance credentials have been proven by the m3, m5 et al, but still, it’s about time BmW had a firebreathing gT range topper in case the i8 still leaves you skeptical of electrification.
So here is the firm’s new car. Two doors, four seats (well, nearly), and two models from launch. now, at £76,000 the 8-Series is cheap. not in isolation, of course, but in comparison to its rivals. >> 116

Performance & Luxury: Six Figure Grand Tourers...
Aston Martin Vantage £120,900: There’s not a self-respecting motoring journalist out there who wouldn’t give the new Vantage a five star rating. Standard equipment is a tad disappointing but more than made up for with a cosseting cabin, beautiful creamy V8 Mercedes AMG-sourced powerplant and that sense of Great British heritage. A 4.0V8 engine is a better bet than the V12, which is a triumph of excess over success, and the Vantage’s ride and handling will have you smile with every single drive. n
Mercedes Benz S560 Coupé £103,715: For those who favour technology and toys over power and performance the S-Class coupé will provide the most relaxing drive, insulated from the inadequacies of life beyond its spacious cabin. Silly options like heated armrests and a perfume dispenser for the cabin provide unsurpassed comfort for owners, but with a 60mph dash dispatched in 4.6 seconds, the big Benz is fast, as well as beautifully crafted and it remaind a phenomenal ownership proposition. n
>> These include aston martin’s new V8 Vantage at £120,000 and mercedes’s S-Class coupé at £102,000, but a forthcoming m8 model will put the BmW on a more even footing with those models.
for now, there’s a choice of that 3.0V6 twin turbo diesel 840d model, or a £100,045 4.4V8 twin turbo petrol powered m850i; a sort of watered-down version of the m8.
Porsche 911 Turbo £128,692: Like the BMW 8-Series, the 911 range kicks off circa £77k, but a six figure budget gives you a choice of a higher performance S variant, a four-wheel drive Carerra 4 version, Carerra S or Carerra S4 convertible versions, a Targa model, or a lightweight GTS performance oriented version.... the range is certainly dizzying, but you’ll love choosing the perfect 911 for you and nothing but nothing on this entire planet handles as well as a Porsche 911! n
118
It’s the diesel which remains our recommendation. granted the m850i and m8 will be quicker, but with the diesel car reaching 60mph in 4.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 155mph on a private track, whilst returning a family hatchback-like 46mpg, you’ll want for no torque, no performance and you’ll appreciate the extra economy when you’re using the car day-to-day.
1 - Lincolnshire Pride SEPT 194.qxp 30/07/2018 12:15 Page 119
“gTs are not chosen on the basis of the most standard toys, but on the grounds of badge, brand appeal, style & personal taste...” Beside, the BmW is designed to be about luxury just as much as it is about performance.
and on this point, what the BmW does offer - beyond its looks and performance - is a very generous roster of standard kit and a lovely cabin with high quality materials. Whilst aston will charge you extra for heated seats or keyless entry, the BmW by contrast gives merino leather, adaptive cruise control, a Bowers & Wilkins stereo, sat nav and digital instrumentation all as standard. The car’s cabin is beautifully trimmed, too.
of course, such gTs are not chosen on the basis of whether they offer the most toys, but on the grounds of badge, brand appeal, style and personal taste.
on that point, BmW has a very strong contender in the 8-Series. It’s a stunning looking car and offers blistering performance too, even with a diesel engine.
It’s refined enough and understated enough to be usable day-to-day, but it looks every bit the sports car that BmW has for too long lacked in its lineup. n

New Touareg is a Tour de Force
Volkswagen has a new flagship in the form of its 4x4 SUV, the Touareg. Larger, more expensive and with an interior drenched in the latest technology, the new vehicle is available to order now, albeit in a very crowded sector...
Seeking a new SUV? Let’s face it, you’re spoilt for choice, not least with models from premium brands like Audi, Mercedes and BMW.
So what can an SUV offering from Volkswagen bring to the table? Well, with its new flagship SUV, the Touareg, a beautifully designed cabin, and plenty of technology. e new range-topping vehicle is priced from £51,300 to £56,900, and as that undercuts other offerings from premium manufacturers, you can specify a few of the many options that Volkswagen is offering alongside a very generous roster of equipment. Entry level SEL models have heated leather seats, navigation, electric windows and mirrors, keyless start, adaptive cruise control and a whole suite of parking sensors, as well as permanent four wheel drive.
VW Touareg 3.0V6 SEL
Price From: £50,500. On Sale: Now.
Engine/Transmission: 3.0V6 TDi, four wheel drive with eight speed automatic gearbox.
Economy: 42.8mpg combined, 173g/km CO2.
Middle grade R-Line models add a powered tailgate and rear view camera, as well as automatic parking and four-zone climate control - all worth having - so it’s our preferred trim. e R-Line Tech flagship adds keyless entry and a premium all-digital dash which Volkswagen has branded ‘Innovision.’ All models come with a 3.0V6 diesel engine, with 286ps of power, and an eight speed gearbox. Inevitably, hybrid and electric variants are expected soon. Disappointingly, the car is a five seater, with no option for additional seats. We speculate that this is to give its sister vehicle, Audi’s Q7, an advantage in the sector. If, however, you’re more concerned with the wedge in your wallet than the badge on your bonnet, the Touareg is a fine car; well-equipped and packed with the latest technology. n

World’s most expensive car is the ferrari 250 gTo...
ferrari If you’re in the market for a cheap and cheerful family runabout or a second car for the school run, look the other way. Bonhams recently auctioned a 1962/3 Ferrari 250 GTO for £28,737,185.40, which officially makes it the world’s most expensive car. This car was the 19th Ferrari GTO to be completed and was invoiced on September 11th, 1962. It was most recently owned by Italian enthusiast Fabrizio Violati. Violati acquired this 250 GTO in 1965 for 2,500,000 Lire, then around $4,000 USD or £1,400 Sterling, equating to around £22,000/$33,500 today. Who says you always lose money on cars...? Certainly not Bonhams, that’s for sure! n
Dogs Jumping out of the high boots of 4x4s and SuVs poses a danger to your dog, say experts at Vet Records. a study has been conducted into the danger of jumping from cars of 55cm, 65cm and 75cm in height, and has found that the stresses ensuing on a dog’s front paws when they land on the ground may cause injuries. 4x4 and SuV models with their taller dimensions are now more popular than hatchbacks or estates. nissan has even created a 4dogs concept version of its XTrail model with pop out ramps for dogs to walk up and down, plus a ‘dog shower’ for hosing down muddy mutts after a walk. n

Luxury male grooming is experiencing a renaissance. This month we meet a barber whose 30 years experience have culminated in a range of treatments ensuring any man can look good and feel great‌ Words: Rob Davis.

MALE GROOMING
The traditional barber is back. never mind a quick buzz with some clippers; proper scissor cuts and hot towel shaves with cut-throat razors in metro-tiled traditional barbers shops are returning to our high Streets. With them returns the traditional leather-aproned barber, and with over 150 premium traditional barbers shops opening in the country last year, that’s a growth of 8%. What’s more, the male grooming sector as a whole also grew by over 3% in 2017 according to the British Barbers association. But that doesn’t come as news to Jammal day. for nearly 30 years he’s been providing a slow, relaxed, traditional and rather more comprehensive range of grooming services for men. Why is male grooming suddenly so popular?
It’s a number of things - and you can decide for yourself which order of importance those reasons should take. The hipster look has caused facial hair and beards to be on trend, a trend that necessarily involves lengthier grooming rituals.
Male Grooming is Booming
The UK male grooming industry was worth £608,000,000 in 2017 and is expected to grow by around 3% in 2018!
It’s no longer considered effeminate or emasculating for men to use products like moisturisers. 63% of men now use at least moisturiser as part of their daily regime and larger cosmetic companies like nivea or dove, and premium brands like Clarins, Clinique and keihls are aggressively marketing dedicated men’s ranges. also, the benefit of a good skincare routine is becoming more well-known; and modern men of all ages now like to look smart. and finally, the 1920s aesthetic is really on trend; the immaculately groomed Jay gatsby in The great gatsby, downton abbey, flat caps, and gin or cocktail bars all evoke that era. That culture, and the availability of more male grooming products than ever before translates into a market for a traditional barbers shop offering a slow, unhurried and skilled service. Who comes into a traditional barbers shop?
The age range is creeping up. When I first began offering hot towel shaves and later male facials, it was 20-somethings, then 30-somethings. now it’s 40 or 50-something men. Traditional barbering is at it highest peak ever, and about 40% of clients opt for a shave or facial at the same time they have a haircut.
We’re quite deliberately more expensive than most barbers shops. a wash and cut starts at £19, a standard wet shave is £28, and our ‘full monty’ grooming session, about an houror so, is £60. our prices reflect a better, longer and more involved service.
our biggest growth area is gentlemen aged 40-60, who come to us once a month for our top of the range grooming experience. Above/Right: A full grooming service with a traditional barber such as Jammal Day takes an hour or so and costs around £60. It’s an experience that many men appreciate, both as a treat and the chance to spend some time relaxing and ‘doing nothing!’
We’re now providing about 10 to 15 wet shaves or facial treatments every day for clients.
Why is that?
Because quite aside from the smarter appearance when they leave, they get to enjoy an hour or two doing absolutely nothing. When you’re in the barber’s chair you don’t have to talk – although clients can do, if they wish – they can’t check work emails on their phone, they’re not grumbled at to do housework or disturbed by other family members.
It’s an hour or two of being ‘forced’ – let’s say compelled – to just sit and do nothing. Watching live sports is noisy; pubs or bars are crowded; exercise, even golf, is tiring… there are so few things for men to do that are genuinely relaxing. Being pampered for an hour or so is a luxury - time to relax is a valuable commodity - so precious is that time to just sit in the barbers chair and not feel compelled to fill that time meeting demands and obligations.
What do your treatments involve?
our £60 treatment involves a full haircut and styling, then the use of pre-shave oil which is massaged into a client’s skin with near-boiling water. after massaging in the oil, we apply the first hot towel, which stays on for about two and a half minutes.
The idea is to open the pores, and the next stage is to use a shaving foam or gel from our preferred Baxter brand, applied as a lather with a badger-hair brush which again helps to open pores. after a first shave, we apply another hot towel, which remains on for another two and a half minutes. We then perform a ‘passover shave’ with a cut-throat razor in a different direction.
next, we use a Baxter facial scrub to perform an exfoliation, which is massaged into the skin for about five minutes. We use hot water and sponges to rinse the skin, and use a face wash which is lathered into the skin to remove blackheads. >> 125

- LUXURY MALE GROOMING -
“good quality products like our Baxter brand are dearer, but are used more sparingly than cheaper brands so they’re not bad value...”
>> after that we use an alcohol-free astringent tonic and close the pores with a towel which has been moistened in water, infused with eucalyptus and left in a fridge.
after that, we apply a full facial mask which is peeled off before a facial moisturiser is massaged into the skin for three minutes.
finally we wash, dry and style the client’s hair. The whole treatment, known as The full monty, comes with complimentary coffee, and takes an hour and a half. Wet shaves take up to 45 minutes, facials take up to 30 minutes. What are the secrets of achieving a barber quality shave at home?
It’s impossible without devoting the same amount of time to it, and faffing about with hot towels and different products. Below: We’ve selected some of the best male grooming products to continue your grooming regime at home.
126
most men at home shave using a cartridge razor, rather than a cut-throat (naked) razor, which is trickier to use, but does cut closer.
It’s important to change your blade regularly whichever shaving method you use.
old blades drag and tug, and aren’t as hygienic. We use a brand new blade with every client we see, and sometimes change the blade a second time halfway through a shave.
I also believe in investing good quality products. our Baxter range is available to take home. They’re more expensive, but you use them much more sparingly than cheaper products so they’re not bad value, and you can tell they’re higher quality products, formulated for skin health and a closer shave.
Men’s Grooming Products
Below we’ve selected the very best premium grooming products for men!
generally, the error that men make when shaving at home is to not open the pores, and to shave too quick, too cool, too blunt.
If you’re going to invest in one or two products to help your shaving regime though, buy a really good quality shaving brush to really push your shaving medium into the face, and use a good moisturiser.
Far Right: Braun’s Series 9 (£299-£389) provides the closest and most comfortable electric shave it’s possible to achieve.
1 - Lincolnshire Pride SEPT 194.qxp 30/07/2018 12:15 Page 127
What other shaving tips do you have?
Invest in both the relaxing experience, and the good quality shave that a monthly visit to a traditional barber offers. Treat yourself to a wet shave at least at the weekends.
If you’re really in a hurry during the week, you can get away with an electric shaver with a really good device, but definitely ensure you have some kind of interim wet shave. Any final words of wisdom?
a visit to the barber isn’t about a haircut. It’s a chance to relax. There are too many ‘in and out’ electric clipper barbers - choose a barber who’s skilled with scissors. a traditional barber will take their time, form a bond with you, and really give you the attention and service you deserve. n Jammal Day is a senior male grooming expert at Seven Hair & Body, open seven days a week, until 8pm (5pm Saturday, 4pm Sunday). Appointments not necessary, haircuts £15-£19; wet shaves £23-£60, facials £10-30. Call 01733 322727 or see sevenhairbody.co.uk.
ThREE WayS To ShaVE: Which Method? “A few years ago, electric shavers couldn’t compete with wet shaving, but the market leader in electric shavers, Braun, has been innovating... and boy, have they moved on since you last tried one!” says Rob Davis. “I tried a barber’s shop wet shave as part of The Full Monty treatment, £60, at Seven Hair & Body (01733 322727) which was undoubtedly the most relaxing way to enjoy the closest possible shave. However, an hour every morning before work is impractical to say the least so best kept as a once a month treat and a maintenance shave.” “The next best option is a wet shave at home. Use quality products like those features here, and you’ll get close enough to the barber’s skill, but still you’ll not match it.”
“The beauty of a wet shave at home is you can be as brief or as thorough as you wish, we’ll suggest quick shaves during the week, but a more thorough grooming regime at the weekend, with exfoliation and perhaps a few minutes under a hot facecloth, especially if you’ll be dressed up and out for supper. We especially like The Traditional Shaving Company’s beautifully crafted Mühle shaving set and Geo F Trumper’s Eucris (£79/£22; see below for details).” “If you’re really in a hurry during the week, or just don’t like wet shaving, Braun’s Series 9 really is brilliant; it’s as close as a wet shave, comfortable and will stay sharper for longer thanks to its docking station. It provides the fastest possible way to achieve a really good shave.” n
(left) Braun’s Series 9 is the best, most sophisticated electric shaver you can buy, with an autosensing motor, 40,000 cross-cutting actions per minute, titanium coated, waterproof to five metres and complete with a Clean & Charge station to ensure hygiene and sharpness throughout its life (£389, www.uk.braun.com).
Floris 89 EDT is the very same aftershave used by James Bond, 007. features an orange and bergamot scent blended with lavender and neroli, all of which give floris no.89 its beautiful classical cologne aspect (£80/100ml, www.florislondon.com).

GOLF XXX TIPS
goLf kIT ChooSIng youR
It’s easy to spend money on golf equipment, marketed with the promise of farther drives, greater accuracy and more precise putting, but as Pride’s golf pro points out, it’s a case of caveat emptor... Words: Rob Davis. Professional Golfer: Jordan Wrisdale.
Buy once, buy quality as the saying goes. and in golf, narrow margins of precision and the proselytism of makers of golf kit desperate to sell you new equipment with the sometimes tenuous promise of farther drives, more precise shots and accurate puts can lead to premature investment.
In fact, taking a considered approach to curating your golf equipment is a better option. So what should you consider when choosing clubs, bags, golf apparel and the latest gPS tech?
128
n Your Drivers: assuming you’re a proficient golfer, it’s worth going attending a custom fitting, and having a slow motion or launch monitor point out the many foibles and errors in many golfers’ swing, and whether your drivers are contributing to these errors.
Shorter shafts tend to enhance control and dispersion of your shots, but longer shafts generate more overall speed. high end drivers are adjustable, but to benefit most from these tweaks, a golf professional should work with you.
our preferred make is Ping, whose g400 drivers are priced at just under £400 and benefit from improved aerodynamic properties and an ability to channel vibration for greater accuracy.
a less expensive option is Cobra’s king f8 drivers at around £329, which also tend to be weighted in such as way to mitigate spin.
n Your Irons: again, our go-to brand is Ping, whose i200 irons are about 30% thinner, and provide good all-round performance at around £120-£130 per club. great vibration resistance, and better moment of inertia (moI) performance provide accuracy, and their hydropearl finish is attractive, if aesthetics are important to you. n Your Putters: The kinloch C Putter from Ping, from £175, is beautifully balanced, a centre-shaft putter that’s simple, solid and easy to use compared to other, rather more complicated designs. generally, when choosing a putter, opt for the smallest possible head if you’re a proficient golfer, or a larger head which will deploy more weight and prevent the head from twisting if you’re a less proficient golfer.

JoRdan WRISdaLE:
Our Professional Golfer
Lincolnshire is widely regarded for its golfing provisions. It’s the home of English Golf, with the National Golf Centre based in Woodhall Spa, and there are over 50 different courses across the county. Jordan Wrisdale has used it to his advantage, and out of the 60,000,000 golfers across the world, Jordan is currently ranked 1,457, and 2nd in the whole of Lincolnshire.
n Your Apparel: golfing apparel isn’t simply a matter of fashion. Wearing the right golf clothing means remaining comfortable, free enough to more proficiently move through your swing and remaining at a sufficiently comfortable temperature to maintain concentration. Synthetic clothing is better than ever, and as well as branded golfwear, we’ll recommend a good base layer from brands like under armour, ideal for autumn and winter golf.
He has represented England for the sport, appears on Sky Sports regularly, competes across the globe and he anticipates that he will be playing in the British Open at Carnoustie later this year.
Jordan Wrisdale
The area’s youngest ever amateur champion, professional golfer Jordan Wrisdale, can be contacted for sponsorship enquiries on 07799 358203.
n Your Bag: Whilst largely down to personal preference, there are definitely better bags on the market than others, and Powakaddy’s dri Edition (£199) provides about four times the moisture resistance of other brands, with seven pockets for ample storage.
n Your Gizmo: Remember Star Trek, and those little hand-held computers - tricorders - that revealed all sorts of plot-advancing information? Sometimes life imitates art and so it is with the emergence of gPS watches,
He has the support from world-renowned coach Phil Kenyon, and his equipment is sponsored by brands Ping and Titleist. “I’ve been playing golf since I was 10, and I’ve always known that I would follow it as a career,” says Jordan. “I’m really passionate about it.”
apps and standalone handheld golf computers.
depending on the model, these are capable of telling you the distance to the tee, measuring the difference between foreswing and backswing to ensure the consistency of your swing and so on.
They can also calculate distances walked and calories burned if you’re health conscious. We’d recommend a smartphone app such as golfshot (£28.99), or a dedicated golf watch - if you want to leave your mobile email and calls from the office behind - such as garmin’s excellent approach S60 gPS £479.99. n
Jordan makes regular TV, print and online appearances. This year, he appears on Sky Sports - average viewing figures over 400,000. Jordan is the youngest ever Lincolnshire Amateur Champion, winning at the age of 15. He won the English Champion of Champions hosted at Woodhall Spa, and is currently playing the European Challenge Tour and the Euro Pro Tour which is based in the UK. n Jordan is currently looking for more sponsors, currently sponsored by Rolec Services, Ping, Mashie and more. He can provide corporate days for staff, great branding across his clothing and great PR for you and your business. If you want to support Jordan through his golfing career, email wrisdalej@gmail.com or call him today on 07799 358203.
