We were also fortunate to be able to sit down with Rutland Polo Club’s Edwin de Lisle and hear all about his extraordinary family history.

OAKHAM SCHOOL TO RECIEVE FUNDING

The fantastic school for children with Autism in Rutland, The Shires, has unveiled £400,000 worth of new facilities. The Shires is the only school in Rutland which caters for young people with autism. Now they've unveiled specialist facilties designed to help pupils learn. Sandra Talbot is Principal and say they are light and airy and there is quick access to outdoor spaces. The Shires at Oakham is both a children’s home and a school OAKHAM

for eight young people with autism. Additionally, the children may have learning difficulties, challenging behaviour and other conditions such as ADHD, epilepsy and dyspraxia. The children at The Shires at Oakham may also have other associated medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma or allergies. That’s what Richard Alderman needed to be elected as a Ward Member for Oakham South West following a local by-election on 12 July 2018. Following a tie, Mr Alderman was elected by the Returning Officer drawing lots after a joint result. Mr Alderman will serve as a Rutland County Councillor until the next round of normal elections in 2019. n

NEW PROJECT NEAR STAMFORD The latest news from the area of Ketton and Rutland is that a new project is looking to give people in Tinwell and Ketton a say in the future development of their villages, there is quite a lot of green space and plenty of rumours which has been getting the locals worried. An application has been put in for the two villages to have their own joint neighbourhood plan which would detail where the likes of new houses and leisure facilities should go in future. Ketton already has a fantastic sport’s complex which includes tennis courts, a cricket pitch and football fields for ladies and mens football. The Cottesmore Hunt

Summer Ball

To keep everyone dancing throughout the summer, The Cottesmore Hunt organised a summer ball at the kennels, by the very kind permission of the Joint masters of the Cottesmore Hunt. It was a fantastic event, orchestrated by Harriet Walker, and thanks to all of her hard work,

the evening was a huge success. There was a fabulous marquee that had been hired from local company, nicks Pop up Parties, which created a fantastic atmosphere. The dJ, Bulge disco, kept the dance floor full all evening while Will Turner captured the antics on camera.

SHOOTING SEASON

Perhaps you’re part of the shooting community, perhaps you’re not, either way, you can’t ignore the fact that from September through to February it is rather exciting to see local pub’s car parks jam packed full of Land Rovers (other 4x4’s are available), men and women unabashedly in plus-fours, socks pulled up to the top of their shins and shirt sleeves rolled up to their elbows. If the fellows have had a good day, you can be assured that the pub will have similar positive vibes to those after a successful rugby match, beer and wine will be flowing and conversation will be all about the day; “didn’t the birds fly well!”

Before you start feeling left out, now is the time to get yourself involved. The shooting industry is extremely welcoming to all communities, ages, and unlike many sports, you don’t have to be particularly athletic to join in. Shooting is also gaining in popularity with the ladies. The Field recently reported that women shots have increased from 1,000 to 12,000 in recent years, the remarkable growth in popularity of driven shooting has brought jobs and investment into the countryside, including into many areas where there are few opportunities for the rural economy to diversify from traditional farming businesses. We’re in an area where tuition and seriously good kit is at our fingertips. We are also surrounded by beautiful countryside that is managed by gamekeepers for the soul purpose of a great day shooting.

If you have trouble accepting that shooting game is a ‘sport’, consider that every year, this country shoots around 25 million game birds. For lessons on the clays, there are several places to go in this area including Wittering Grange, Welland valley Gun Club, kibworth Shooting Ground, Grimsthorpe Estate Shooting Ground or if you want an instructor who is verging on famous for their success and experience, you can go to Holland & Holland in middlesex. at this stage, you don’t need a shotgun certificate and its a good idea not to rush into anything until you’re sure you enjoy it. not only will lessons teach you how to shoot, but the instructors will make sure you understand everything to do with gun safety. It’s vital information that you must abide my at all times to keep yourself and others safe.

Cleaning Your Gun

After a day’s shooting, you’ll be really surprised how much muck is left behind in your barrels. To keep your shotgun in perfect working order you need to regular clean and oil it then it’s not a bad idea to have is serviced at the end of the season. n Inspect the barrels. Examine the bores, then check whether there is any moisture remaining hidden under the extractors or along the crevice between the rib and the barrel tubes. n After this, run a cleaning patch (you can get these from the gunsmiths) through the bores and look for leading in the chokes, streaks in the bores or a build up of plastic in the chambers. n You may have to apply a bit of force to polish the dirt out but if you’re still struggling, try a bristle brush or even a ‘bronze’ brush. n After a really tough day, or perhaps if you’ve missed a clean inbetween shoots, you might want to use a special purpose solvent or use wire wool with a lubricant. When your patches come out clean, you’ve finished! n You may also want to inspect your gun for cosmetic problems such as a dent or scratch to the bluing. Lightly oil a cloth (if you don’t have any just rip up an old t-shirt) and polish the bores with the oil. n To clean the crevices around the shotgun, you will find nothing more effective than a cotton bud. n Finally, wipe all surfaces of the shotgun with clean paper or cloth, finishing with your oily rag to give it a shine for next time it’s out of the gun cabinet. If you’re not a fan of getting your hands dirty, you can check your gun in at a professional gunsmiths where they will clean and service the gun for you. n

“You’ll find that driven game shooting is not only a formal, social occasion; it’s also fantastic sport the more you get into it, the more you’ll know...” If after your first go you’re enjoying it, start the application for your shotgun certificate as it can take some time to process. you’ll need to visit the Countryside alliance website and fill in an application for the Grand or Renewal of a Firearm and/or Shotgun certificate. While you’re on their website, read through the Code of Good Shooting Practise and take it all in. Once your Shotgun Certrificate has processed, you can visit your local gunsmiths and find a gun that fits your form. Everyone is different and a shotgun is a very personal piece of equipment. now all you need is cartridges, a hip-flask and some trendy new tweed plus-fours! you’ll find that driven game shooting is not only a formal, social occasion; it’s also fantastic sport, the more you get into it, the more you’ll know. you may either be invited by word of mouth to a local shoot or you’ll have to do some research and book into one, but once you get out there and meet people you’ll find that things just open up. at the start of the day’s shooting, each gun will draw their peg number. make sure you don’t forget yours! The peg system is used so nobody gets the best position all the time. at the end of every drive each gun will move up, a couple of peg positions. This makes the day fair and means everyone gets to shoot in the centre, and at the edges, of the line. you might find you’re in the hot-spot on most drives, or you might be out of the shooting all day – but that’s the classic “luck of the draw!” So this season we say throw yourself into it. Buy some game to try at home, cook some pheasant goujons, book a day’s shooting, wear your most flattering tweed and support the British countryside for all it’s worth. n

There are lots of professional beaters out there who go shooting, simply to work their dogs. If you have a well retrained pooch you think is up to the task, get involved. Once you’re extrmely confident that your dog has what it takes to pick up on a shoot, you can approach the contact the organisers and ask if they would like your assistance. Going to ‘pick up’ can be a very rewarding day for you and your companion and if all goes well, the guns will think the world of you and your pooch. If you’re not sure you’re ready, you first need to be sure that your dog is happy to be left in the car without making a fuss. They should also be accustomed to being in company with other people and dogs. It must have picked up cold game gently and know to bring it to hand.Your dog should also have excellent recall and sit where told until released. Finally, it would be ideal if you dog has some previous experience of picking warm game. n

de Lisle Rutland Pride recently met with Edwin de Lisle at Barnsdale Lodge to chat about

his fascinating life. From being born into a

British military family in France to making

his mark in Leicestershire, Edwin has led a remarkable life. Here, we share with you

the best bits; how Edwin came to co-found

is month we sit down with Edwin de Lisle at the wonderful Barnsdale Lodge for an exclusive interview on the history of the de Lisle family, and what keeps Edwin busier than ever today! It’s not every day that mid-conversation, your lunch companion mentions a time when they were at Prince Philip’s 80th birthday party. But it’s not every day you sit down with Edwin de Lisle. We met at Barnsdale Lodge during the extremely hot spell in July, and what better place to hear all about the “de Lisle “ history than in their garden room?

It was clear from the off that Edwin was going to be taking me on a journey from the very beginning of the de Lisle family to present day Edwin and all his antics. So let’s begin...The de Lisles have been in England since 1066, “We were given part of the Isle of Wight,” Edwin tells me. “If you ever go down there, you’ll find out that the last woman to be publically beheaded in England was one of my relatives, Lady alice Lisle.” There is now a pub in Ringwood in Hampshire called “ The alice Lisle “ where locals tell her story and no doubt drink lots of ale before stumbling home, worrying about ghosts. Lady alice was charged with treason for harbouring the well known nonconformist of his era, John Hicks, who was a member of the defeated army lead by crown contender, The duke of monmouth.

The de Lisles moved to Leicestershire in 1683, “They bought the Garendon Estate and have been farming the land since then,” says Edwin. “We are a Loughborough family. Some of the university campus was built on the estate and we’re about to restore the historic Garendon Park.” The de Lisle’s built Garendon Hall, a magnificent Palladian house that has a fantastic (if a little heartbreaking) story of its own. Edwin explains that the house was demolished and the m1 runs nearby. They are planning a new residential village close to the Park. Right: Edwin at a Rutland Polo Club event.

We are extremely privileged, we have health, and you should always give something back... Garendon Hall belonged to ambrose Lisle march Phillipps de Lisle, Edwin’s Great Grandfather, a man who was determined to bring Catholicism to England and even had a monastery built. mount Saint Bernard abbey was founded in 1835 thanks to ambrose de Lisle providing land for building. ambrose was keen to re-introduce monastic life into England and on michaelmas day of that year, Br augustine Higgs took possession of the half- ruined cottage in Tynt meadow. He was soon joined by other monks: Luke, Xavier, Cyprian, Placid and Simeon. ambrose also inherited the second family estate, the manor of Grace dieu in Leicestershire which before the Reformation had been an augustinian nunnery. Following this, ambrose built a new manor-house to be known as Grace dieu manor. It took the year of 1833 to complete the project. Grace dieu has since been turned into an independent Catholic preparatory school, which one can only imagine ambrose would be thrilled about as his faith meant so much to him. He and his wife Laura Clifford had 16 Children !

as for Edwin’s closer relatives, he has been sprung from a military family. “my father fought in the first world war with the Grenadiers. In the second world war he was living in a beautiful moated chateau in France with my mother. ” Edwin paints a beautiful picture as he speaks. “as the Germans advanced on the chateau in Eure et Loir my father threw some items into the moat out of the windows. We’ve just been there my elder brother Gerard and I to ask the new owners – have you come across any of our possessions ?” Edwin laughs. “my father was taken prisoner by the Gestapo. He ended up doing four years in a POW civil camp Stalag 220 for British Internees in St denis, Paris.

The military history doesn’t stop there, “my uncle alexander was shot down in 1917 aged 22 and it was his uncle Everard who won

the first victoria cross for Leicestershire in 1857 Indian mutiny.” says Edwin. “Therefore, I suppose you could say we are a military family, we’ve served king and country.”

Back to the present day with Edwin, “I’m one of four, my father was one of eight who was one of 16,” he exclaims. Edwin came over to England from France when he was aged seven, “When we arrived in Leicestershire, my brother Hubert and I went to the convent in Loughborough for two years to learn English because I couldn’t speak a word,” says Edwin. It was only a few weeks later that Edwin was plonked on his first pony and taken out hunting with the quorn! “I must have fallen off at least four times,” he says, which isn’t bad at all considering.

Edwin went on to attend St. John’s Prepatory School followed by Beaumont College in Old Windsor. after leaving school he was decidedly going to stick with the farming side of things and went off to work on a 1200 dairy farm in Somerset for John alvis, who made Farmhouse Cheddar. In 1967, Edwin started his studies at the Royal agricultural College (RaC) in Cirencester where he met some extraordinary people, became master of the RaC Beagles and worked his summers for R.a. Bennett & Partners as well as Oscar Colburn. “I used to do a lot of cross-country running,” says Edwin as we look through old photographs. “Being master of the RaC Beagles means a lot of running!” Throughout our lunch, Edwin makes frequent reference to how privileged he has been throughout life, from meeting kind and generous people while at Cirencester to maintaining his health today, this is a man who has always been so grateful and adventurous. after Cirencester, as well as working as a translator, Edwin got into property. “I used to buy property for people in France,” he says. “I bought someone a vineyard, they loved it so

much that they wanted to buy another, so they did, then they bought a third. You don’t have to drink all of your own wine, you can trade 100 bottles for someone else’s 100 bottles,” the idyllic life. “When I used to go over to buy these vineyards, they were only around three acres or so because of the Code Napoleon inheritance rule in France.” Edwin explained that there are lots of little plots out there because of the way the families split the land for inheritance. You have to be well in with Monsieur le Maire for when the next three acres appears on the market!

In 1970, Edwin served as Assistant Agent to Duke of Buccleuch at Boughton for four years, it was during this time that together with friends, he co- founded Rutland Polo Club. Edwin also met Diana, Princess of Wales, after her wedding and they had plans to plant an avenue of trees at Althorp. Sadly, Diana died before its completion. Edwin became as associate of the RICS and in May, 1974, joined Fisher & Co. as an agent to Drayton Estate. He started his own firm of Land Agents in 1982. In-between all of this, Edwin married Caroline, whom he invited on a skiing holiday just a few weeks after they’d met! They were married shortly after at Church Langton and have two sons, Alexander and Nicholas.

Edwin simply doesn’t stop. While at Boughton he was lucky to be taught by the Duke how to manage woodlands and this has become one of his greatest interests. He acted as an interpreter on RFS foreign visits to Alsace and Belgium and returned with the idea that Britain needed more woods and proposed this to the Forestry Commissioners. They liked the idea and he suggested two sites that were hard hit with closures. Corby/Rockingham Forest area was devastated when British Steel pulled the plug and Coalville with the closure of the Coalmines. He was therefore, instrumental in founding the Midland Forest which is now based in the Charnwood Forest area. He’s done so much for Leicestershire, Rutland and the rest of the country. These days, Edwin works tirelessly as Vice President of the Rutland Polo Club and has also promoted 27 acres of Residential Development in the area working for himself.

The polo side of things all started when a group of friends including Colonel A P Gilks, Mike Seckington, Major Charlie Humfrey and Edwin needed “something for hunting people to do in the summer.” However, Edwin got the bug for playing polo a little sooner at Cirencester. Prior to this, when Edwin was at Beaumont College, he’d actually sneaked out of school to watch the Coronation Cup, in Windsor Great Park (a big deal in the polo world.) “It just so happened that on the BBC News when they filmed the Queen presenting the cup, I was in the background,” laughs Edwin. “When I got back to school, the Headmaster said

‘de Lisle, did you enjoy the polo?’ I told him I did, it was a really, really good match! Obviously I wasn’t supposed to be out of the school gates so I received twelve strokes the next day, said thank you very much and that was that!” The Rutland Polo Club was founded in 1971. It all started at North Luffenham Aerodrome. Then the Club moved to the Rutland Showground in Oakham and finally rented some land in Langham. The club has been a huge success from the word go! Members and subscribers of the Belvoir, Cottesmore and Quorn Hunts were invited to an inaugural meeting and over 100 people showed up riding a variety of animals from 17hh hunters to 12.2hh ponies! In 1975, the Rutland Polo Club had their first overseas tour in Kenya and thanks to Support from the Cottesmore and Quorn pony clubs and many other people and patrons, the club is still thriving today. The main sponsors are the Westerby Group.

Edwin’s most recent achievement is raising over £10,000 for the DNCR after holding a charity lunch and auction at Rutland Polo Club on the 1st July2018. The money will go towards the Clinical Rehabilitation Centre that the DNRC are building at Stanford Hall, near Loughborough. It is a site for 200 service personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force who have been injured in Combat physically or mentally. Rutland Polo Club welcomes new players who may want to have a go, and the Committee enjoy meeting members of the public who may wish to come any summer weekend to watch or picnic with family and friends. Judy qualified as an area demonstrator in September 2014, since then she has visited Flower Clubs throughout the north of England, from the Isle of man to Scarborough! In addition to demonstrating, Judy currently teaches evening classes in Flower arranging/Floral art at The Grammar School at Leeds. As Pride goes to press, Birdfair will be taking place at the reservoir, but there’s just one species that’s getting us in a flap. We’re spotting the great plated Finch’s Arms, a pub restaurant par excellence that’ll ensure you’re in cloud cuckoo land as you wing your way to Hambleton... Without feather ado, we’ll dispense with the usual bird puns, safe to say that you won’t be led on a wild goose chase if you visit the absolutely excellent Finch’s arms this month.

The place is a true feather in the cap of Rutland, offering exceptional views over the reservoir as you enjoy al fresco dining on what is probably the prettiest terrace in the area. The Finch’s arms is Grade II listed, built in the 17th century and celebrating its 21st anniversary this year under the ownership of the Crawford family of ‘accidental publicans...’ allow us to explain that one.

Colin & Celia Crawford purchased the Peacock pub in Redmile near melton back in the late 1980s. They did so to convert it into private accommodation, but fancying themselves as evanescent publicans, the couple though they’d have a giggle and run the place for one last night before its permanent closure. Little did they realise that evening would be a tremendous runaway success

The couple raised their son and daughter Jordan and Charlotte in the place, and pioneered gastropub food before the term was ever invented... then used... then abused by every other pub restaurant the length and breadth of the country. The second generation of Crawfords are now running the Finch’s, which Colin and Celia - now in semi-retirement - took on after they sold the Peacock and moved to the Hambleton peninsula in 1997. They’re also running the Finch’s sister pub, the Hornblower on Oakham’s High Street... and both places are absolutely brilliant. >>

Food History: “I worked at Hambleton Hall and at Hart’s in Nottingham before coming to the Finch’s. I love the place and we’ve some really loyal customers!” Food Heaven: “I’m a better cook than I am a shot, but I do love game, and our duck breast is an absolutely delicious autumn dish!” Food Hell: “There’s not much I don’t like... a good chef should enjoy all of his dishes!” n

as autumn sets in, the main dining room has a wood burner, but there’s a beautiful wine bar, snug and main bar area in the wobbly old front of the place. Its flagstones, pews, beams and real ale are much more in line with winter dining.

Happily, you can choose to take the à la carte menu either in the smarter restaurant or in the more relaxed bar. This provides a choice of five sharing platters, five starters, seven main courses and six desserts. alternatively, there’s a bar menu with four ciabattas and pub dishes plus a set lunch menu, too, with two or three courses and three options per course for £17.50 or £21.50, and a Sunday Lunch menu with two or three courses for £19.95 and £23.95.

Ingredients are sourced locally where possible, and during our visit that meant asparagus and strawberries from the makey family’s manton farm, and trout from Rutland Water. Plenty of effort goes into both the creation and presentation of each dish. Sous chef max is known in these parts as an accomplished chef and is responsible for baking fresh bread for diners each morning. naturally sauces, puddings and so on are all made in house, and the brigade of chefs dance around the pass choreographed by mark Gough, who has been at the Finch’s for nine years.

a classically trained French chef, he’s a significant part of the reason that the Finch’s enjoys the reputation for excellence and for consistency that it does.

The wonderfully relaxed pub restaurant co-exists really happily with that other great dining out experience on the peninsular, Hambleton Hall, with the patrons of both typically enjoying a visit to the other.

during our visit an abundance of sunshine meant that even on a weekday at mid-morning the place was bustling with customers seeking, as we were, quality dining, great service and a really nice atmosphere... a case, perhaps, of birds of a feather flocking together. What this does prove, however, is that we’re not alone in finding The Finch’s arms one of the best quality pub restaurants in the area, especially as mid-summer turns into autumn, when you can enjoy morning coffee, afternoon tea, or the chance to wet your beak under a shady parasol. The Finch’s arms is, indeed, a great restaurant, perfect for this month and one we’re very happy to crow about. n

LJ Fairburn & Son and celebrity chef Rachel Green have teamed up to create this wonderful twist on green eggs and ham...

BakEd Ham with Citrus & Honey and Fairburns Egg Salad

Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cooking time: Two Hours, 30 minutes. Serves Four. Ingredients: (for the gammon) 3kg gammon joint • water, to cover • eight cloves, plus extra for studding the gammon • two onions, peeled and halved • 1tsp allspice • two large bay leaves • (for the glaze) 150g soft brown sugar • two oranges, juiced • dry mustard powder, optional • 3tbsp clear honey • (for the new potato and egg salad) 500g waxy salad potatoes • ½tsp Dijon grain mustard • 2tbsp sour cream • 3tbsp mayonnaise • dash red wine vinegar • 1tbsp wholegrain mustard • three spring onions, thinly sliced • Four Fairburn’s British Blue eggs, hard-boiled, peeled and quartered • small bunch dill, finely chopped • handful parsley, finely chopped • chopped chives to garnish

Place the gammon into a deep pan and cover with water. Push two cloves into each onion half and add to the pan along with the allspice and bay leaves. Cover with a lid and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook gently for two hours, adding more hot water to the pan as necessary. Take the gammon from the pan and place into a roasting tin. Remove the skin, leaving behind as much of the fat as possible. Score the gammon in a diamond pattern with a tip of a sharp knife. Stud with cloves. mix together all of the glaze ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Spoon the glaze evenly over the gammon. Roast the gammon in the oven for 25 - 30 minutes, basting frequently with the glaze and pan juices, until the gammon is cooked through and golden-brown all over.

allow the gammon to rest for 15 minutes. While the gammon is resting, begin to make the Fairburns egg salad.

Boil the potatoes in water for about 15 minutes, keep checking on them. Hardboil four Fairburn’s British Blue eggs. meanwhile, mix together the mustard, sour cream, mayonnaise, a dash of red wine vinegar and a pinch of sea salt. Cut the cooked potatoes and toss with the dressing, then leave to cool.

Peel and cut the eggs into quarters and add to the salad. Place on the table for guests to help themselves to. Carve the gammon. Stir the remaining ingredients into the potato mixture, keeping back a few of each of the herbs for garnish, then, when the potatoes are cool, garnish with the herbs and a twist of black pepper and serve with the ham. n

Rutland Pride caught up with local property expert Kate Vincent to learn more about how she combines her passion for equestrian to give her a competitive edge when finding homes for her clients When not helping clients buy a new home, local property finder kate vincent likes to mix time with her family and friends along with her horse, Ruby.

So, Kate how long have you been riding? I started riding at the age of six by going to a local riding school and then got my first very old pony when I was 8 years old.

I was then lucky enough to have a series of ponies up to my GCSE year when I found it too difficult to combine riding and studying hard. I rode very little after that until my early-forties when my husband bought me a riding day as a surprise Christmas present. Big mistake, as I’d forgotten how much I loved it and as soon as I got back on board, my passion for riding returned with zeal!

How long have you had Ruby and is she your only horse? I bought Ruby from a friend of a friend in Cornwall in 2012 and have been a happy one horse owner ever since. I keep her at home so I can juggle her with work, children and a husband but I honestly don’t think I have got the capacity to add any more. I regularly go out with clients at the weekend to view properties so it is very convenient to roll out of bed early to sort my horse before going off to a meeting.

Do you compete? not as much as I would like but I do the occasional dressage test. Our children are in their late teens so still around at weekends so we like to spend time with them before they ‘fly the nest’ but once they are not around, I then plan to get back into one day eventing as I used to love it as a teenager. This said, I still find hacking out enjoyable and very relaxing. Does riding help you with your job? Good question and the answer is yes in a variety of ways. The most obvious one is when I am asked to look for an equestrian property for a client because the knowledge I have as an owner of a horse, stable and paddock means that I really understand the practicalities of matters such as land drainage, proximity of yard to house, access to local hacking etc. my riding and competing also brings me into contact with a wide variety of country folk so I often use this network of contacts if I am working on a challenging search where the estate agents are struggling to introduce me to appropriate property.

and finally, I have to admit that I do use my hacks as opportunities to look at local property. you can see an awful lot more of a property over a wall when riding a sixteen hands horse and around the back on a bridle way. I also sometimes stop to talk to homeowners and its amazing what an informal chat will unearth – in my job local knowledge is of paramount importance.

So, what is happening in the local housing market at the moment? People are very cautious and by this I mean both homeowners and buyers. There is still a good demand from buyers for good quality, sensibly priced property but their level of caution means that they are not willing to pay over the odds and many seem reluctant to take on the maintenance of period properties.

On the selling side, there is a significant cohort of homeowners who would like to move but are reluctant to put their properties on the market because they can’t find somewhere for themselves. as a result, estate agents are carrying out a good number of valuations but most are seriously short of stock. In many ways this is where working with a property finder such as myself is an ideal scenario as we help buyers to find properties that are not on the open market and manage the process at a speed which works for both the buyer and the seller (possibly giving the latter time to find another home sure in the knowledge that they have a buyer for their property). n If you are struggling to find your next property or would value some independent property advise to help you buy more effectively locally, Garrington offer a commitment free meeting. It’s actually illegal to release grey squirrels, if you trap one, be it in the garden shed, a humane trap or the garage, you have to dispose of it. Grey squirrels eat fruits and vegetables, they also dig up and eat bulbs and corms. They disturb the other 98

While we were chatting about vegetables, neil let me in on a little secret of Head Gardener kay. “To grow great parsnips, all you need to do is get keep hold of the tubes from inside toilet rolls,” says neil. “Fill them up with compost and put them on a tray and plant two seeds in each tube, leave them in

the greenhouse and water them lots.” neil then says that they will plant the seed that has grown the strongest in the garden and it’s a fail-proof way of ensuring you get big, sturdy parsnips because at the end of the day, no one likes a small parsnip. as well as vegetables and summer fruit, neil and kay have a variety of mature trees including 11 apple trees, there’s a stunning big old bramley in the centre of their vegetable patch. It’s not just neil and kay who take care of their garden, it has enticed many a helper over the years as gardening is therapy to a lot of people. kay says they get a lot of help from their friend Jill, who will often pop over to help with weeding and watering, there’s lots of watering to be done! and that’s not all! kay also opens the garden when it’s looking it’s best to different groups across the

So far, the garden has helped the Evergreen Care Trust, Friends of Stamford Hospital, Parkinsons uk and this year they are raising money for Prostate Cancer research with help from the deeping u3a. This is a case of a garden giving back, whether it’s an afternoon tea raising money for charity, or a quiet spot to reflect, kay and neil have created a real plot of paradise. n

alison Pratt, at the nFu East midlands, discusses the many challenges farmers have to struggle with in their industry, and the topic of mental health in the farming community... ON THE FARM THIS MONTH

Farming can be a lonely profession; we’re often working remotely from the farm yard, sometimes for hours on end. Cultivating the land, shepherding, carrying out maintenance, inspecting crops; they’re all jobs that take time and are usually done alone. On many of our farms, that’s the farmer’s lot; there are no family members or staff to share the work with and as time is usually of the essence, getting each job completed and ticked off the list is paramount.

Arable Sector: A particularly busy month; sowing winter barley, oilseed rape or winter wheat. Start to plough and cultivate. Field beans are to be harvested. Livestock Sector: Ewes are to be mated with rams for lambs in earlyspring. Beef and dairy cows planned for autumn calving will start to give birth now too.

Of course a faithful farm dog or the tractor cab radio are good company, but being alone can set your brain working and thoughts of all the jobs to be done, all the bills to be paid, family disputes, legal problems, can crowd in. Research shows us that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetime, and stress is a key factor in this. although stress isn’t a mental health problem in itself, it often leads to depression, anxiety, and in the worst of cases, to self-harm and suicide.

you might think that living and working in our countryside would be an uplifting and joyful experience. For farmers, their work place is also their home, so there’s no distance or time away from work when you can destress or wind down. Problems get magnified, and sometimes one thing can lead to another: bad weather, an animal that has to be put down, a mechanical breakdown, bereavement, money worries, issues can soon take over. In farming, finances are precarious, and, I often say, farmers are proud people and won’t admit that there’s something troubling them: they’ll work it out, get through it, something will turn up.

But help is often just a phone call away. In Lincolnshire, we have two farming charities with volunteers and staff ready to help. The first stage of solving a problem is talking about it and that’s what Lincolnshire Rural Support network’s helpline and drop-in advice points are there for.

The advice points offer the opportunity for a quick chat with a friendly face. They’re located in the three main auctions in and adjacent to the county; Louth and newark livestock markets and the Spalding auction.

Often a health check will also uncover another problem and a referral to a specialist volunteer adviser can be arranged. Please call 0800 138 1710. RaBI, farming’s oldest charity, provides both short and long term support for farmers; sometimes this is in the form of an emergency financial grant, sometimes it is help with claiming state benefits or arranging for a business appraisal or debt advice. Call 0808 281 9490. Taking that first step to admit that there’s an issue you need help with, sharing your problem, that’s the hardest part. But there is someone out there; there are lots of people out there who can help, so just pick up the phone. In the words of the old telephone advert, ‘it’s good to talk.’

- THE FITZWILLIAM MILTON HUNT -

After a busy winter’s hunting, you might wonder what all those people in their red coats do in the warmer months. you’ll be surprised to hear it’s a relatively relaxed affair for the animals; horses get turned out on holiday in the field and the hounds are taken care of by the hunt staff. Simon Hunter, the aptly named Huntsman at the Fitzwilliam (milton) Hunt tells me life is, “Just as busy during the summer as in the winter,” and it’s far more than your average doggy day care at the Fitzwilliam kennels. With 48 couple of hounds (that’s 96 in total) there’s an awful lot of exercising and feeding to be done. Each day the kennels need cleaning out, hounds sleep on wood shavings like horses, then they’ll go out on the bikes and take them for a three mile exercise. The closer they get to the hunting season the further they’ll go. “We head out for about an hour,” says Simon. “If it’s a warm day, we’ll take them to the lake for a swim.”

The hounds live a life of luxury, their diet is what domestic dogs can only dream of and to be part of a pack in the beautiful setting of milton Park is surely hound heaven. Something that many people are not aware that hunts take care of, perhaps out of blissful ignorance, is that of Fallen Stock.

To be part of a pack in the beautiful setting of Milton Park is surely hound heaven! as you may know, farmers lose some of their livestock each year year-round for various reasons. It can be an expensive and totally heartbreaking journey but thankfully, hunts are there to help out local farmers. Simon makes a few trips each day to farmers who

need animals taking away for whatever reason and as long as they haven’t had the fatal injection, they can be fed to the hounds. “Whelps move onto mince at three weeks,” Simon tells me. “Then they go straight onto flesh at around six weeks.” It’s amazing really that such a tiny puppy can digest proper meat so soon. But when you’re in amongst full-sized foxhounds you realise how much growing they’ve got to do and just mother’s milk isn’t going to be nearly enough initial weeks following birth.

This year, the Fitzwilliam hounds have had four litters of whelps. “We aim to have 10 couple of hound puppies each year,” says Simon. Some of these hound puppies will be going to join other hunts as far as Wales but the majority of them stay and will learn everything by mixing in with the original pack out hunting. To come up with names, there’s a very old-fashioned rule whereby if a visiting dog comes to the kennel to mate with a bitch, the names will be made with the

Master of Hounds Simon got involved in hunting as a young lad working as a kennel boy. He clearly got the bug and stayed with hunts in various parts of the country as he went through school. Surprisingly though, he isn’t a huge fan of horse riding. “I realised at around 17 years old that riding was part of the job,” says Simon. “I spent a few years riding racers as a jockey but that’s different, I only ride for the hounds.” The passion that he has for his hounds is quite remarkable, “I love the hounds, I’ve never looked back,” he says. Simon has been with the Fitzwilliam for five seasons now, “I saw the job in the Horse & Hound,” and it’s been quite the journey from whipper-in to Master of Hounds. Simon works alongside the first whipper-in, Shaun Parish. The country hunted by the Fitzwilliam is around 30 miles by 20 miles, from Stamford in the North to Higham Ferrers in the South, and covers an area of approximately 600 square miles.

In this considerable expanse of country are over 800 farmers, over whose land the Fitzwilliam considers itself lucky to hunt, and is very grateful for the support that it enjoys. n

The Kennel records of hound pedigrees at the Fitzwilliam Hunt go right back to 1760 but the hunt was probably formed in the 1740s.

them day-in, day-out, you know who they all are. When the puppies are big enough, they go off to hunt followers homes to grow up before they return in the autumn for hunting the following season.. I can tell you from personal experience, there is no puppy as naughty as a hound puppy. I worked on a yard just outside of Oakham when I was still at school where they took on a couple each summer. If you left something

on the floor for even a second it was chewed and if they managed to squeeze through the back gate alongside the wheelbarrow they were off, noses down and turning into specks in the Rutland countryside after what was obviously a delicious scent. It took hours to get them home, then they would pile on top of each other and sleep for the rest of the day before finding new tricks to keep me busy. adorable and time consuming, like anything cute really. It’s not all fun and games, hound puppies also have to do their bit at puppy shows.

Puppy shows are held in the summer to thank the volunteers and hunt supporters that have been busy walking the hound puppies. The shows demonstrate how far the puppies have come and their progress since they’ve been back into the kennels. The judges (usually a Huntsman from another pack) will judge the hounds on their overall conformation. They will check they have good feet, shoulders, backs and also see how freely they move. as the famed sporting writer and poet George Whyte-melville of the foxhound once stated, “On the straightest of legs and the roundest of feet,/With ribs like a frigate his timbers to meet,/With a fashion and fling and a form so complete,/That to see him dance over the flags is a treat.” So that’s what the hunt do during the summer months — look after hounds and adorable foxhound puppies, attend events and just generally take care of the followers, supporters and farmers who out of generosity and passion, take care of the hunt throughout the long cold winter months. n

WITHIN THE LAW “We consider the Hunting Act 2004 to be an ill thought-out piece of legislation that is harmful to the hunted species, the environments in which they live and the rural economies that surround them. We are law-abiding people and whilst the ban on hunting remains in force, the Fitzwilliam will continue to hunt within the law, providing activities for our Hunt Followers and services to farmers and landowners. In parallel with this, we remain active in seeking repeal of this law. We do a variety of things, sometimes just exercising our hounds and horses together, or hunting a trail. These activities are legal and permitted under the Hunting Act.” n

a Winner’s Wedding

This year is particularly special as Jenny is based in Stamford. as the prize is entirely random, we have had London brides, manchester brides and even Scotland brides win, but never someone in the local area.

The two live in Stamford with daughter Felicity and son Oliver and tied the knot in Peterborough. They met through mutual friends and spent many months emailing each other before alex asked Jenny on a date. “It was a brilliant first date, and we both knew we would get together,” says Jenny. “We stayed in the pub until they kicked us out and just got on so well!”

Three years later, they moved in together and soon fell pregnant with daughter Felicity. In September 2016, Jenny was getting ready for a charity gala ball before alex decided to pop the question at home. In February 2017, Jenny received the call from ukbride, explaining that she had won our fabulous competition. “I just couldn’t believe it! I was over the moon. Winning the prize just took all the pressure off of planning the wedding. I have

STEROID INJECTIONS DR HANY ELMADBOUH, LEAD CONSULTANT AT AVICENNA CLINIC EXPLAINS JOINTS AND SOFT TISSUE STEROID INJECTIONS

What is steroid Injection? A common cause of a painful joint is synovitis (inflammation of the lining of the joint) or adjacent soft tissue. It can be useful to inject corticosteroid and/or local anaesthetic medication directly into the joint or the soft tissue next to a joint (this is often called a bursa) to reduce the inflammation and provide pain relief. Why perform a steroid injection? This procedure is most often used in the shoulder, knee, or hip but may also be helpful in other joints such as the back (facet) and small joints of the hands and feet for pain relief. Sometimes it may be difficult to know what is exactly is causing the joint pain. If the pain is not mainly due to the joint inflammation, the injection may not improve the symptoms. Although, this may be disappointing , it can be helpful information as it means another cause of joint pain needs to be considered.

What are the benefits of steroid injections? Overall, steroid injections into joints (particularly the shoulder and the knee) appear to provide short to medium term pain relief (3 weeks to 3 months), particularly when combined (in the shoulder) with appropriate physiotherapy. They do not provide long term pain relief and do not alter the course of underlying joint disease (e.g. osteoarthritis). How Joint injection is performed? The procedure is usually performed under X-ray or ultrasound guidance to ensure

accurate injection into the target area. The exact technique varies depending on the joint to be injected and the consultant radiologist (specialist doctor) who performs the injection. Generally, a preliminary scan will be performed to locate the exact point to be injected, which may be marked on the skin. The skin will then be cleaned with an antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Local anaesthetic is injected into the skin and deeper tissues to reduce the discomfort of the procedure. A needle will then be placed into the joint either at the point marked on your skin or using the ultrasound to see the tip of the needle as it moves into the joint or bursa. When the needle is in the correct place, its position will be confirmed by injecting a small volume of contrast (dye) before giving the steroid injection and withdrawing the needle.

How long does an injection take? This may vary but an ultrasound guided injection will generally take between 15 and 30 minutes. Are there any side effects? There is a very small (1 in 20,000-75,000 injections) risk of infection. There are possible complications of the steroids with aggravation of pain and if the steroid is not injected solely in the joint damaging to the soft tissue including atrophy of the skin and fat under the skin (subcutaneous fat) and rupture of the tendons. Allergic reaction to the injected medication (as with any drug) may also occur.

What happens after the procedure? The patient will go into the recover area to be monitored until ready to be discharged. As local anaesthetic is used, the patient may initially feel better but the joint pain may also be worse than before the injection and this may last 2-3 days. If the pain becomes much worse in the days following the injection, this may indicate very rarely infection.

How often can I have the injection? Some patients find that the injection gives them good pain relief for a few months, but then the pain comes back and they wonder about having another injection. Although the exact risk of multiple injections is not known, most doctors would advise against injection more than 3-4 times a year to avoid damage to the joint.

However, as much as the day was about entertainment, it had a very important purpose. Rutland Polo Club has selected dnRC as this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chosen charity, with the Clinical Rehabilitation Centre being built near Lough-

borough. This is for 200 service personnel from the army, navy and air Force injured in Combat physically or mentally. This will have cost ÂŁ300m to build and will be the most up to date hospital of its kind in the World! It will replace Headley Court. The event on the 1st July was to raise money for dnRC. There was a large charity marquee

for the formal lunch that seated over 200 guests. Diesel is dead, long live diesel. So said the bigwigs at Bayerische motoren Werke, more commonly known by its acronym. Ever since 2014, BmW’s i8 proudly proclaimed that combustion engines were dead and electric supercars were the way forward.

Indeed, the i8 is a fine car; blending blistering performance with a degree of eco-responsibility. But liquid fuels aren’t dead yet, and since the discontinuation of the BmW 850i in 1999, BmW has been lacking a flagship GT to take the fight to Porsche’s 911, the mercedes SL and audi’s R8. That’s not proven too much of an inconvenience for the firm, whose performance credentials have been proven by the m3, m5 et al, but still, it’s about time BmW had a firebreathing GT range topper in case the i8 still leaves you skeptical of electrification.

So here is the firm’s new car. Two doors, four seats (well, nearly), and two models from launch. now, at £76,000 the 8-Series is cheap. not in isolation, of course, but in comparison to its rivals. >> 148

Performance & Luxury: Six Figure Grand Tourers...

Aston Martin Vantage £120,900: There’s not a self-respecting motoring journalist out there who wouldn’t give the new Vantage a five star rating. Standard equipment is a tad disappointing but more than made up for with a cosseting cabin, beautiful creamy V8 Mercedes AMG-sourced powerplant and that sense of Great British heritage. A 4.0V8 engine is a better bet than the V12, which is a triumph of excess over success, and the Vantage’s ride and handling will have you smile with every single drive. n

Mercedes Benz S560 Coupé £103,715: For those who favour technology and toys over power and performance the S-Class coupé will provide the most relaxing drive, insulated from the inadequacies of life beyond its spacious cabin. Silly options like heated armrests and a perfume dispenser for the cabin provide unsurpassed comfort for owners, but with a 60mph dash dispatched in 4.6 seconds, the big Benz is fast, as well as beautifully crafted and it remaind a phenomenal ownership proposition. n

Porsche 911 Turbo £128,692: Like the BMW 8-Series, the 911 range kicks off circa £77k, but a six figure budget gives you a choice of a higher performance S variant, a four-wheel drive Carerra 4 version, Carerra S or Carerra S4 convertible versions, a Targa model, or a lightweight GTS performance oriented version.... the range is certainly dizzying, but you’ll love choosing the perfect 911 for you and nothing but nothing on this entire planet handles as well as a Porsche 911! n

It’s the diesel which remains our recommendation. Granted the m850i and m8 will be quicker, but with the diesel car reaching 60mph in 4.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 155mph on a private track, whilst returning a family hatchback-like 46mpg, you’ll want for no torque, no performance and you’ll appreciate the extra economy when you’re using the car day-to-day.

and on this point, what the BmW does offer - beyond its looks and performance - is a very generous roster of standard kit and a lovely cabin with high quality materials. Whilst aston will charge you extra for heated seats or keyless entry, the BmW by contrast gives merino leather, adaptive cruise control, a Bowers & Wilkins stereo, sat nav and digital instrumentation all as standard. The car’s cabin is beautifully trimmed, too.

Of course, such GTs are not chosen on the basis of whether they offer the most toys, but on the grounds of badge, brand appeal, style and personal taste.

On that point, BmW has a very strong contender in the 8-Series. It’s a stunning looking car and offers blistering performance too, even with a diesel engine. It’s refined enough and understated enough to be usable day-to-day, but it looks every bit the sports car that BmW has for too long lacked in its lineup. n

Volkswagen has a new flagship in the form of its 4x4 SUV, the Touareg. Larger, more expensive and with an interior drenched in the latest technology, the new vehicle is available to order now, albeit in a very crowded sector...

Seeking a new SUV? Let’s face it, you’re spoilt for choice, not least with models from premium brands like Audi, Mercedes and BMW.

So what can an SUV offering from Volkswagen bring to the table? Well, with its new flagship SUV, the Touareg, a beautifully designed cabin, and plenty of technology. e new range-topping vehicle is priced from £51,300 to £56,900, and as that undercuts other offerings from premium manufacturers, you can specify a few of the many options that Volkswagen is offering alongside a very generous roster of equipment. Entry level SEL models have heated leather seats, navigation, electric windows and mirrors, keyless start, adaptive cruise control and a whole suite of parking sensors, as well as permanent four wheel drive.

Inevitably, hybrid and electric variants are expected soon. Disappointingly, the car is a five seater, with no option for additional seats. We speculate that this is to give its sister vehicle, Audi’s Q7, an advantage in the sector. If, however, you’re more concerned with the wedge in your wallet than the badge on your bonnet, the Touareg is a fine car; well-equipped and packed with the latest technology. n

aston martin a motoring spy photographer has broken the first images of aston martin’s forthcoming replacement for the company’s vanquish model, which will be known as the dBS Superleggera. The car will use an updated version of aston’s 5.2 litre v12 engine and will incorporate twin turbocharging and an updated eight speed automatic transmission to cope

with the extra torque that the 715bhp supercar will provide its driver. a convertible ‘volanté’ version will follow, but for now, the coupé version will reach 60mph in 3.4 seconds and will sit below the company’s £1.3m valkyrie hypercar. Superleggera will offer more focused performance than the vanquish, and will be priced at around £200,000, available from early 2019. n

Bonhams recently auctioned a 1962/3 Ferrari 250 GTO for £28,737,185.40, which officially makes it the world’s most expensive car. This car was the 19th Ferrari GTO to be completed and was invoiced on September 11th, 1962. It was most recently owned by Italian enthusiast Fabrizio Violati. Violati acquired this 250 GTO in 1965 for 2,500,000 Lire, then around $4,000 USD or £1,400 Sterling, equating to around £22,000/$33,500 today. Who says you always lose money on cars...? ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS CELEBRATES LARGEST GATHERING OF ROLLS-ROYCES IN THE WORLD Rolls-Royce motor Cars celebrates the largest gathering of Rolls-Royces in the world last month at the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club annual Rally and Concours d’Elegance. The spectacular setting of Burghley House provided the perfect backdrop for over 1000 heritage and contemporary Rolls-Royces. The traditional barber is back. never mind a quick buzz with some clippers; proper scissor cuts and hot towel shaves with cut-throat razors in metro-tiled traditional barbers shops are returning to our High Streets. With them returns the traditional leather-aproned barber, and with over 150 premium traditional barbers shops opening in the country last year, that’s a growth of 8%. What’s more, the male grooming sector as a whole also grew by over 3% in 2017 according to the British Barbers association. But that doesn’t come as news to Jammal day. For nearly 30 years he’s been providing a slow, relaxed, traditional and rather more comprehensive range of grooming services for men, and now he works at Seven Hair & Body. Why is male grooming suddenly so popular?

It’s a number of things - and you can decide for yourself which order of importance those reasons should take. The hipster look has caused facial hair and beards to be on trend, a trend that necessarily involves lengthier grooming rituals.

Male Grooming is Booming

Finally we wash, dry and style the client’s hair. The whole treatment, known as The Full monty, comes with complimentary coffee, and takes an hour and a half. Wet shaves take up to 45 minutes, facials take up to 30 minutes. What are the secrets of achieving a barber quality shave at home?

It’s important to change your blade regularly whichever shaving method you use.

Old blades drag and tug, and they aren’t as hygienic. We use a brand new blade with every client we see, and sometimes change the blade a second time halfway through a shave.

I also believe in investing good quality products. Our Baxter range is available to take home. They’re more expensive, but you use them much more sparingly than cheaper products so they’re not bad value, and you can tell they’re higher quality products, formulated for skin health and a closer shave.

Generally, the error that men make when shaving at home is to not open the pores, and to shave too quick, too cool, too blunt.

Invest in both the relaxing experience, and the good quality shave that a monthly visit to a traditional barber offers. Treat yourself to a wet shave at least at the weekends. If you’re really in a hurry during the week, you can get away with an electric shaver with a really good device, but deﬁnitely ensure you have some kind of interim wet shave. Any final words of wisdom?

a visit to the barber isn’t about a haircut. It’s a chance to relax. It’s easy to spend money on golf equipment, marketed with the promise of farther drives, greater accuracy and more precise putting, but as Pride’s golf pro points out, it’s a case of caveat emptor... Words: Jordan Wrisdale.

Buy once, buy quality as the saying goes. and in golf, narrow margins of precision and the proselytism of makers of golf kit desperate to sell you new equipment with the sometimes tenuous promise of farther drives, more precise shots and accurate puts can lead to premature investment.

In fact, taking a considered approach to curating your golf equipment is a better option. So what should you consider when choosing clubs, bags, golf apparel and the latest GPS tech?

n Your Drivers: assuming you’re a proficient golfer, it’s worth going attending a custom fitting, and having a slow motion or launch monitor point out the many foibles and errors in many golfers’ swing, and whether your drivers are contributing to these errors.

Shorter shafts tend to enhance control and dispersion of your shots, but longer shafts generate more overall speed. High end drivers are adjustable, but to benefit most from these tweaks, a golf professional should work with you.

Our preferred make is Ping, whose G400 drivers are priced at just under £400 and benefit from improved aerodynamic properties and an ability to channel vibration for greater accuracy. a less expensive option is Cobra’s king F8 drivers at around £329, which also tend to be weighted in such as way to mitigate spin.

n Your Irons: again, our go-to brand is Ping, whose i200 irons are about 30% thinner, and provide good all-round performance at around £120-£130 per club. Great vibration resistance, and better moment of inertia (mOI) performance provide accuracy, and their hydropearl finish is attractive, if aesthetics are important to you. n Your Putters: The kinloch C Putter from Ping, from £175, is beautifully balanced, a centre-shaft putter that’s simple, solid and easy to use compared to other, rather more complicated designs. Generally, when choosing a putter, opt for the smallest possible head if you’re a proficient golfer, or a larger head which will deploy more weight and prevent the head from twisting if you’re a less proficient golfer.
