WELCOME

T

his summer has yielded none of the usual highlights for Lincolnshire’s residents and visitors. Notable by their absence were the Lincolnshire Show, Heckington Show, Revesby et al, as well as the Burghley Horse Trials, a series of celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage, not to mention the entire programme of summer entertainment for each of the county’s theatres and arts centres. And yet, as we creep further towards normality, the county’s restaurants, pubs and cafés are at least beginning to open up once again and with holidays cancelled, many of our clients within the homes and gardens sector are reporting people using their holiday funds to instead improve their homes. My point? Light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a sense of optimism echoed by South Kesteven District Council’s Kelham Cooke, with whom we enjoy an interview later in this edition, and echoed too by Lincoln actor Colin McFarlane, who has given his voice to a campaign designed to support the county in its post-Covid recovery. Also this month, we’re enjoying delicious dining at The Lincoln Hotel, we’re harvesting in the Wolds with world-champion farmer Tim Lamyman, and we’re previewing the Autumn fashions of the county’s Agatha boutique. With a sense of optimism, please accept our best wishes for a wonderful month and a great autumn!

LADY ELIZA MANNERS COLLABORATES WITH LOCAL FASHION DESIGNER HANNAH

GRANTHAM Fashion designer Hannah-Sophia Jarvis has launched a design collaboration with Lady Eliza Manners of Grantham’s Belvoir Castle, known for her traditional yet bold personality, and strong sustainable outlook. Earlier this year, Eliza launched her sustainable tableware brand and is keen to inspire and educate her social followers via personal charity work and her posts on global issues. Hannah Sophia England has launched The Eliza Dress, a four-way luxury reversible dress that has been meticulously hand-crafted to evolve and support women throughout each life stage. It’s made with the finest lightweight-breathable fabric that can be worn year-round, tripling the average use of a dress. Current stats show that the average woman in the UK will wear a dress just four times, out of fear of being seen in it

multiple times or due to their bodies changing shape throughout life. The dress comes with a Limited Edition Eliza Manners branded preservation box with Limited Edition navy care tissue. This is the hallmark of all Hannah-Sophia England dresses, encouraging women to cherish each piece and one day pass it down to her next generation. This not only promotes the longevity of the dress, but allows it to become a timeless piece of the family’s legacy. Hannah’s brand, which launched earlier this year, creates elegant, reversible pieces, designed to compliment women throughout every stage of their journey in life, while remaining practical and comfortable — proving you can combine luxury, style and sustainability. n www.hannahsophiaengland.com.

Lincoln set for £1.68m CITY SUCCESSFULLY BIDS FOR FUNDING TO IMPROVE WATERSIDE AND HIGH STREET...

8

LINCOLN The City of Lincoln Council’s Executive has approved a new project for the city, aimed at reviving Lincoln’s historic high street. In partnership with Historic England, the multimillion pound High Street Heritage Action Zone project will see the city’s high street rejuvenated, improving the overall feel of the city centre. In May 2019, Historic England launched the nationwide scheme, with 69 urban centres across England selected to receive a share of £95 million, and in April Lincoln City Council

received the news that its bid was successful, and a formal offer of funding was made of £1.68 million. From the fund, around £200,000 will be used for the cultural and community engagement strands including public art, exhibitions and events and approximately £1.4 million is set out for physical interventions such as shop front reinstatement, public realm and planning for gap sites. Improvements will cover Waterside South, Cornhill and Sincil Street as well as St Mary’s Street, and the High Street. n

COLIN MCFARLANE

The Man with the

BIG VOICE Colin McFarlane is the Lincoln actor with an impressive CV and an even more impressive voice. He also has plenty to say, especially on the subject of how Lincolnshire needs to pull together now more than ever… Words: Rob Davis. Portrait: Phil Crow www.philcrow.com.

COLIN MCFARLANE really inspires a sense of déjà vu, and it’s little wonder. You’ll perhaps know him from EastEnders as the copper investigating the death of Lucy Beale. Or from Holby City and its sister show Casualty. Or Judge John Deed, Jonathan Creek or Death in Paradise. Or perhaps from comedy skits with Lenny Henry or with Paul Whitehouse in The Fast Show. If you’re a sci-fi fan you’ll recognise Colin from Torchwood and Dr Who… Batman, even, or if history is more your thing, as the character Ulysses in the historical TV drama Outlander. And if by some chance you don’t recognise the face, you’ll sure know the voice… Colin is both the enigmatic timbre delivering instructions to contestants on The Cube, and the voice of hunky cleaning guru Mr Muscle! Closer to home, though, you’ll know the actor and voice talent as an avid follower of Lincoln City FC, and as someone who loves Lincoln, promoting the city at every opportunity. Were you born and raised in Lincoln?

No. I was born in Hackney, London where I now live. I lived in Lincoln when I was four (RAF Cranwell) and moved there permanently at 18. My father is from Jamaica and worked in the personnel department for a British Engineering company Reginald Aitken Limited. In 1955, as British citizens from the colonies, they were invited to the UK to help

rebuild it. My father’s company were agents for several UK companies, so he had a reference for the British Oxygen company. At the interview he was told that, despite his excellent reference, there were no ‘white collar’ vacancies, as management weren’t certain how their peers would react to a black man working in their offices... but there were vacancies on the factory floor. The explicit prejudice surprised my father as he had always worshipped Britain, which was affectionately known to West Indians as the ‘Mother Country.’ You’ve spoken about the experience recently?

Yes. Windrush is a word some people now associate with betrayal. So to rectify that, on June 22nd, Windrush Day recognised the anniversary of 500 British colonials from the Caribbean Commonwealth arriving on the ship of the same name at Tilbury Docks in June 1948. Closer to home David Lambert at Cultural Solutions, established Windrush Lincoln, is one of 49 organisations across the UK highlighting the contributions to society of the Windrush Generation and their children. My father and I were interviewed as part of the project for October’s Black History Month. I found out fascinating new facts about his early experiences in the UK (see www.windrushlincoln.today).

Main Image: Colin, seen here on Steep Hill, is a regular in Lincoln.

16

Your father then joined the RAF?

Yes, as a British citizen, my father had to do National Service. It was a shock... they weren’t told about that before leaving Jamaica! Ironically, despite their Britishness being questioned later, the Windrush generation were still conscripted under the 1948 National Service Act. He served 30 years in the RAF and received an MBE. We lived in North Hykeham during part of my father’s service and since his retirement. When I was young he often had trouble returning to the UK with the RAF, even with his military ID (aka his ‘1250’). I was born here, but as a small child I travelled on my parents’ Jamaican passport. However, so as not to have myself and my two brothers encounter the same issues, my parents took out British passports in addition to their Jamaican ones. Sadly this issue of passports and the lack of knowledge about the history and rights of British colonials is at the heart of the Windrush scandal. You weren’t schooled in Lincoln though?

Briefly, when we were stationed at RAF Cranwell, but because you have to move a lot with the RAF my father decided to board all three of us at the Perse School in Cambridge. It was there that I toyed with the idea of being a lawyer, when surprisingly my Latin teacher (not my English teacher who

COLIN MCFARLANE

taught drama), suggested acting instead; after seeing me in a tiny role in the school play, ‘Caesar and Cleopatra.’ It was like a lightbulb moment and it inspired me to follow my dream! What happened next?

I started to research the possibility of studying drama and applied to several universities, eventually choosing Loughborough (19801983). I never realised my voice would go on to play such a prominent role in my life and career. I remember back at boarding school that I used to often get in to trouble for talking after ‘lights out’ in the dormitory. I always thought I was being picked on, because I had no idea at the time that it was my deep voice giving me away! Your early roles were in theatre?

Initially, I spent a number of years performing Shakespeare and went on to work with people like Ian McDiarmid , (Star Wars’ evil Emperor Palpatine), Steven Berkoff, Harold Pinter, Michael Sheen and Tom Hardy. My first TV job was a film called ‘Dutch Girls,’ with Colin Firth early in his career (1985). Theatre was my first love and as it turned out, it’s a great way to get spotted by casting directors too. And you remained in Lincoln?

I love the city, family and friends are still here and I enjoy watching Lincoln FC. I’ve been fortunate to be able to divide my time between Lincoln and London. Advances in technology allowed me to work from my ‘Harry Potter’ studio, under the stairs in Lincoln! I installed some sound-deadening padding, an industry standard Neumann microphone and an ISDN connection. Magically, I could then voice with studios in London, Los Angeles and elsewhere! You’ve also raised your family here?

My son Josh attended Lincoln Minster School (and later Skegness Grammar) as did my two other children Jonny and Em who moved in with us from the age of 16 after the death of their mother from cancer. They have been part of the family for 10 years now. I’ve been so pleased and proud with the way they’ve all grown up and I think the fact that they’ve been raised in the oasis of Lincoln, is a big part of that.

Jonny and Em are white and Scottish, so it’s been fascinating discussing the Black Lives Matter movement with them. Em told me how anti-racism books are flying off the shelves among her generation as they seek to learn more and challenge injustice. Is that reflective of their generation?

Possibly so, information is more accessible with the internet. Nelson Mandela said ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world;’ I agree! I remember US teacher/educator Jane Elliott, created an exercise in which pupils were favoured or otherwise on the basis of their blue or brown eyes. She was able to ‘engineer’ a prejudice where none existed before and so demonstrated that discrimination is learned and is therefore a behaviour that can be unlearned and then challenged. Education is so important in that regard.

“Nelson Mandela said ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world;’ I agree!” Hence ‘Making History?’

Yes. It’s been on hold while I have been filming Outlander. but the idea is that school pupils are encouraged to find something in their family and cultural history, that inspires them to follow their dreams and make a short film about it and share that with all of us. (www.makinghistory.org) What other projects are you working on?

I’m working on a project with a school mate from the Perse, Simon Wells, the great grandson of H G Wells no less... though he never told me that when we were at school! He is based in LA and directed the movie ‘Prince Of Egypt.’ We’re in the process of creating a TV series for both UK and US audiences on the emergence of jazz and civil rights in the 1920/30s. Our musical hero will encounter people like Jelly Roll Morton,

Jack Johnson, Marcus Garvey, your readers will have to google them! Screenwriting is new territory for me, but really exciting! Thank goodness, the voice work continues to roll in as it’s tough for film and theatre right now because of the pandemic. You’re still supporting Lincoln in the process?

Yes, I often get asked to support various things in Lincoln. Recently an inquiry to voice a video came via a What’s App business group set up by Liam Scully (CEO Lincoln City FC). I was told that Charlotte Goy at Visit Lincoln was trying to get hold of me to help voice a message that people should ‘stay home, stay safe’ and that people were welcome in the city ‘but not yet.’ I thought it was an important message so I did it for free to help out. The video was brilliant. It showcased Lincolnshire’s beauty but also advised caution. I’ve been isolating during lockdown as I have asthma and am ‘high risk’ so it was a message that I thought it was essential to deliver. You’ve also supported the IBCC? Yes. My father is on the board of trustees for Canwick’s International Bomber Command Centre and is rightly proud that four out of five of the West Indian aircrew in 1940 were based at Bomber Command in the county... a little known fact. Funnily enough, just after I’d made a video to support them with their current crowd funding, it was announced that they’d won two prestigious awards: Visit England’s Gold Award for International Tourism and Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award; a timely boost for the centre. In just two years it has already attracted a quarter of a million visitors, but lockdown has prevented people visiting. So it’s more important than ever that we support them now, particularly the people of Lincolnshire itself, the vast majority of whom have still yet to visit this jewel in our crown. We are so fortunate to have it in our own backyard, as it were. It’s also Battle of Britain day, this month, and that’s one of the special stories told at IBCC. IBCC is just one of the many brilliant attractions and aspects of life in Lincolnshire, of which we should all be very proud! n

KELHAM COOKE

We’re Open for

BUSINESS As Grantham and Stamford emerge from lockdown, businesses and residents alike are pondering what this brave new world will look like. One person who remains faithfully convinced of the area’s ability to make a rapid recovery is Kelham Cooke, Leader of South Kesteven District Council... Words: Rob Davis.

AS ANYONE who has had a birthday during lockdown will appreciate, these are strange and sometimes lonely times. Kelham Cooke is Leader of South Kesteven District Council and last month he blew out 30 candles in a celebration that was perhaps more subdued than he would have anticipated for such a milestone birthday. But celebrations can wait - there’s a job to do first. As we write, central Government had just announced that, along with shops and the hospitality industry, theatres and other businesses on our High Street more and more businesses can reopen and begin trading again. Cause for optimism that may be, but it’s now that the hard work really begins. The UK will need to rebuild its town centres and support local businesses who may not even be sure they will have businesses to return to, post-lockdown. It’s during such unprecedented times as these that people – residents and business owners alike – look not just to central, but to local government for leadership and direction. That means Kelham, leading the Council, needs to have a convincing strategy for returning the area to some semblance of normality. With that in mind, we spoke with Kelham to pose the question: What happens next? “We try to get back to a more normal way of living and working,” says Kelham. “With optimism but a sense of caution, too.”

As the Council’s Leader, Kelham is distinctive in a couple of respects. For a start he’s younger than your average Council Leader - not the youngest in the country, but certainly more youthful than most senior staff in local government. Secondly, unlike many in local government positions who segue into local politics from other professions or sectors, Kelham’s career has always been firmly focussed on the twin worlds of community leadership and politics. Educated at Stamford School and Nottingham University, where he read Business and Economics, Kelham’s first job was working for Waitrose, taking charge of the retailer’s Community Matters green token scheme both from head office, and closer to home in Stamford. Kelham said: “I met so many people in the community, so many volunteers, who worked incredibly hard to make where they live a better, kinder and more compassionate place. I developed a real respect for them, and they made me realise how essential that sense of community is. I also found it rewarding to be out and about rather than always being stuck behind a desk. This all coincided with a friend asking if I would help to distribute leaflets for the 2010 General Election. I agreed, and before I knew it, I was standing for election myself later that year in the local elections. It wasn’t part of any great plan, more a case of serendipity.” >>

KELHAM COOKE

“I was 20 years old when I was first elected and in my final year at university too, so it was interesting switching between canvassing and studying. Like most people, I had a good basic understanding of local government, but I didn’t fully realise how pivotal the role of councils such as South Kesteven is to creating the right environment for happy, healthy communities.” “But I had fantastic support, with training from South Kesteven District Council in public speaking, effective communication, and problem solving. The job is hard work but incredibly rewarding. I can’t imagine getting this range of experience, knowledge, and skills in any other role.” “I often get comments about my age, about being a young councillor, but I’m far from alone in that respect. If being a youngish Leader of a council encourages other people from the younger generations to get involved in local government, that’s great, because they are the future. But there is a need for people from all generations and all walks of life to get involved because democracy works best when those who serve, collectively, reflect the communities they represent, there is strength in diversity.” In 2015, five years after being elected, Kelham was invited to join the Council’s Cabinet, and in 2017 he was elected as Deputy Leader. When former SKDC Leader Matthew Lee resigned in September 2019, Kelham was elected Leader and was immediately faced with the task of steadying a council that had been rocked by a tumultuous few months. The Council has a staff of over 500. It has 56 councillors, a population of over 150,000, about 60,000 households, and four market towns - Stamford and Grantham, Bourne and Market Deeping - as well as 80 villages.

“Grantham meanwhile has tremendous military and architectural heritage, but much of it is hidden, or not obvious to those who don’t know the area. It has great transport links and lots of good employment opportunities. When I think of Grantham, I think of unfulfilled potential, something I’d like to address as Council Leader. In fact, when it comes to all four of our market towns, and our 80 villages, fulfilling potential so that our communities really do thrive in different ways that work with their histories and needs of those who live there, is central to what I want to achieve.” Kelham says he tries to keep in touch with the people on the ground who drive community spirit and support their local communities. People like Sarah Sewell of Stamford’s Energy Clothing who also coordinates the town’s Shop Stamford group, Louise Marsh of Evergreen Care Trust, and Michael Thurlby of Knead Pubs. There is a real sense of locals and Stamford’s business owners wanting to see businesses open once more. The hospitality sector, as an example, employs 3.2m people nationally - the third largest employment sector in the UK after the healthcare sector - which employs 1.9m people including 1.45m in the NHS - and the MOD which employs 250,000 civilians and military personnel. The sector has a turnover of £130bn but 99% of hospitality businesses are SMEs, and for that reason it’s the most vulnerable sector of the economy.

“Stamford is a sociable town, and I think everyone would acknowledge that they’ve missed the opportunity to just go out; to have lunch with friends and family to just enjoy a walk around the town centre...”

“South Kesteven as a district is resilient, and though both are successful, Stamford and Grantham are different towns with different needs. Stamford benefits from being a great town for visitors, and its town centre has a mix of local and national businesses, meaning that it’s a very good town centre in terms of its diversity of retailers and its night-time economy, all of which helps to generate footfall. Recently I visited the town on market day and spoke with some of the traders, who all felt that same sense of cautious optimism and desire to get the town trading normally once more.” “Stamford is also lucky to have at its heart the Burghley House, and together with its architecture, it remains a beautiful visitor town. Equally relevant is the character of the population, who are keen to see the town thrive and to protect its character and livelihood.”

Stamford’s large number of independent retailers and its independently owned pubs and restaurants are an example of the kind of businesses that need the support of locals, in that period after lockdown more than ever. But Kelham believes the population will naturally support their local business community alongside its strong hospitality sector.

“Stamford is a sociable town, and I think everyone would acknowledge that we’ve all missed the opportunity to just go out; to have lunch with friends and family, to just enjoy a walk around the town centre, and to grab a coffee at one of the many wonderful tea and coffee shops.” In spring, central government was faced with a Hobsons-esque choice of either protecting lives or prioritising the economy. Inaction would have meant the protracted occurrence of Covid in our communities. But politicians and their advisors were also all too aware of the consequences of the bad medicine of lockdown. A recession now seems inevitable, some businesses won’t survive, growth will stagnate, and jobs are likely to be lost across the UK.

Right: Kelham met Tim Peake in the area when the astronaut returned Flower of Kent returned to Woolsthorpe from the International Space Station. Kelham joined other cabinet team members last year to swim 128 lengths and raise £1,000 for charity.

KELHAM COOKE

There’s no panacea; each town or city in the UK will face its own recovery challenges, hence every local government must formulate its own devolved strategy for post-Covid recovery. South Kesteven was recently awarded £126,000 funding for supporting the recovery of the district. This poses the question of what practical measures Kelham and his team can take to stimulate a return to normal trading. “Everyone knows it is not going to be easy to recover from the impact of Covid-19. As a Council, we have acted swiftly to support our local businesses, getting grants and rent and rates relief where it was needed in record time. The team at SKDC rightly earned national recognition for its swift response.” “We also established the SK Community Hub and our Befriending Service in the first few days of lockdown to ensure that support for the most vulnerable was co-ordinated and delivered through an army of volunteers as well as council staff. And we maintained our waste collection service throughout. It may not sound like much, but we’d have a whole different public health issue without this vital service.”

“Their role is not to police the town centre, but to highlight any problems or pinch points, so that we can take action or flag issues to our colleagues at Lincolnshire County Council, or Lincolnshire Police. The whole aim is to encourage people to feel safe and to get people back into our town centres.”

“But throughout the last few weeks, we have also had our eyes firmly on the future. We have kept the momentum going with developments across the district, including St Martin’s Park in Stamford, and the sensitive restoration of the former Ambulance Station in Elm Street, both of which will bring employment opportunities to the town which is essential for a strong economic recovery.”

“I’ve found it so good to be able to go out once again and to interact with people - albeit maintaining the recommended safe distance. Ensuring that people have the confidence to do just that, but also ensuring that it’s as safe as possible, is both a priority and a way of ensuring that the recovery of the district will be as swift and as safe as possible.”

“When we went into lockdown, I’d been Council Leader for just eight months and our Chief Executive, Karen Bradford, started on 2nd March... just 21 days before lockdown!”

“I have to commend every one of my colleagues for how they’ve worked,” says Kelham. “Whether they’ve been maintaining the provision of local services or working from home, everyone has worked really hard to ensure the district can continue to offer its residents and businesses the quality of services and the sense of community that we’ve come to expect from the area.”

“As well as fighting Covid-19, we have been working on a new Corporate Plan which along with an amended budget, will clearly set out our vision for South Kesteven, which will form the basis for how we move beyond Coronavirus.” “Councils have to take a holistic approach. We have to look at housing, the environment, our performance, and the economy. By doing so, we create the right conditions for success.” “That is why when we talk about the phased reopening of our town centres, we talk about balancing the need to protect public health with the need to restart the local economy. These are not mutually exclusive; they are mutually dependent – you can’t really have one without the other. So we have been working with businesses to provide guidance and support, have extended free car parking in council-run car parks, reopened the public toilets with strict Covid19 safety measures in place, and provided signs and posters around our towns to remind people of the need to stay safe.”

“My life during lockdown has been one of conference calls with central government ministers, weekly ‘crisis’ meetings, formal committee meetings every week or two, and the usual full council meetings which take places every month or two – although through the use of technology we’ve had to get used to almost overnight.” “We seem to have adapted well to working remotely but we’re also keen to return to a sense of normality in our working lives. In-between all this, I’ve rediscovered cycling.”

“Hopefully, this will help to minimise the risk of a second wave which will, in turn, feed into the next important role of a District Council; to encourage a sense of confidence in the area.”

“I’ve had some great rides out in the countryside. I’ve no interest in cycling competitively but I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to get some fresh air and, of course, enjoy the surrounding countryside... it’s been a nice reminder of what a beautiful place the district is in the summer months. I just hope that we’ve a few more weeks postlockdown when the weather will be kind so that we can all getting out and about, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, and enjoy the safe return of our town centres, and all they have to offer.”

“To support this, we’ve also created social distancing champions; volunteers who can be out in the community to offer advice and to see that guidance and best practice is being followed.”

HARVEST IN THE WOLDS

REAP WHAT

YOU SOW At the time of writing, Lincolnshire’s skies are blue, temperatures are high and the county’s fields are golden brown. This month we’re sitting cabside with World Champion farmer Tim Lamyman who enjoys gathering in the harvest on his farm in the undulating Wolds... Words: Rob Davis.

HARVEST TIME

IN A YEAR OF UNCERTAINTY, a bit of familiarity can prove a real comfort. The sight of the combines, rolling around the fields, reminds us that nature is a constant, even in volatile times. A couple of times when discussing the consequences of lockdown, I’ve heard businesses remark that all of a sudden their plans, budgets and financial forecasts have been turned completely on their heads. They’ve spoken about how disconcerting such uncertainty is. And yet that’s a condition which farmers have had many years to get used to… if not tolerate. Everything can be going well until those vital weeks leading up to harvest and a whole year’s work can be upset. Uncertainty and being at the mercy of nature is something that goes with the territory for farmers, and you have to wonder how they cope. “You get on with it,” says Tim Lamyman philosophically. “You accept the ups and downs and try to foster a sense of resilience, much like you do in any other aspect of life.” Easier said than done with such important consequences, but if anyone should know, it’s Tim. The farmer is the third generation of his family to tend the fields of arable crops on his land, exactly equidistant

between Louth, Horncastle and Alford… he’s in the centre if you were to draw a triangle between the towns. Tim farms over 1,500 acres plus a further 400 acres under contract and his entirely arable operation comprises wheat, barley, peas and beans as well as hay and haylage. But Tim is no ordinary farmer. Whilst wheat yields an average six and a half or seven tonnes per hectare, Tim’s whopping world record winter wheat yields topped 16.5t/ha in 2015. He has also achieved pea yields of 7.5t/ha in 2019 breaking that world record for a second time and he has achieved barley yields of up to 13 t/ha. “It’s a matter of pride I suppose, but the whole farming industry has to stay sharp and continue to innovate,” says Tim. “We need to feed an ever growing population and improving farming practices is a hard fight, but a good one.” “We practise a high input and high output model which in simple terms means putting lots of effort in and using different varieties to ensure resilience. I’m planting KWS Colosseum and Parking wheat, and a few others.” >>

Opposite: A Claas Lexion is a common sight in Lincolnshire around harvest time. The machines typically have a 50ft header and can swallow up 11,800 litres of grain before they empty their grain tanks.

>> “The farm also uses a range of different nutrition, not just fertilisers but other inputs to de-stress the roots and lower the risk of fungus as much as possible. It’s not a cheap way to farm, but the results are there.”

wool clouds and temperatures in their mid to late 20s. And where better to take in the view of the Wolds on such a splendid day than through the windscreen of Tim’s Claas Lexion 750.

wheels. The term combine harvester refers to a consolidation of the roles of cutting, and threshing to separate the crop from its unwanted stalks and chaff which are then chopped and spread.

Tim’s cereals will be sold for milling, for animal feed and for seed production. Naturally he’s been called upon to give talks on increasing yields across the industry and is proud not just of his own efforts but the whole of the farming sector in Lincolnshire.

Tim’s combine is a whopper, boasting some 550hp of grunt, weighing in at a hefty 16 tonnes and capable of swallowing up 11,800 litres of grain before offloading into an amenable tractor and trailer.

Despite its macabre appearance the adjustable header’s job is simply to comb the crop and feed it uniformly into the combine’s jaws in preparation for the reciprocating row of teeth to cut the crop at its base.

It’s also fair to say that Tim’s job isn’t made any easier by virtue of the fact that his land isn’t flat, as is the perception of Lincolnshire from outsiders. Yellowbellies are familiar with the gentle undulations of the Wolds, but none more so than the poor farmer who has to try to achieve consistent results from the hilly region.

For a monster machine though, it’s a pretty civilised experience. Beginning at around 10am, by which time any morning dew will have evaporated off the crop, Tim enjoys the civility of climate control set to a fresh 19°c and switches between the equally patriotic Lincs FM and BBC Lincolnshire whilst trundling methodically round each field at a leisurely 25mph.

The crop is then sent by conveyor towards the threshing drum which spins at anywhere between 160 and 900rpm depending on the crop being harvested. Grain falls through sieves to the collecting tank and is taken by auger towards the grain tank, whilst the rotors take the rest to the rear of the machines where rotating choppers cut and spread the straw ready for baling.

By the time this appears in print, Tim will be well into sowing oilseed rape and wheat, doubtless with cooler weather and murkier skies. But at the time of writing, in mid-August, the skies are a dazzling blue with cotton

Some combines can sport a header of up to 50 feet, but the one of Tim’s Claas is a little more modest at 25ft because of the tricky turns and undulating grounds it has to traverse on its combination of tracks and

Modern combines have become increasingly clever and can drive themselves using GPS but beyond his laser pilot – a device which assists in maintaining straight lines – Tim prefers to pilot the machine manually.

HARVEST TIME

His working day continues until dusk, or mist or the desire to go in for a bit of supper, if time allows. From his father Peter’s day and certainly from grandfather Leonard’s day, the industry has changed significantly, but as Tim’s yields prove, technology is an ally at most, rather than a substitute for the good judgement and experience of a farmer. “My son Robert is 20 and has just finished his agriculture Foundation degree at Bishop Burton and is already helping on the farm. My daughter Emma is a bit younger and helps my wife Sarah with the luxury holiday cottage we’ve created on the farm, Woody’s Top.” Emma starts work at a local accountancy firm in September. “It’ll be interesting to see what the future of the industry is,” he says. “But even though we can’t predict how farming will change, and especially the farming of cereals, we can say with reasonable certainty that it will remain an important part of the sector, one that I hope will always be as much of a challenge and a pleasure as it is right now!” n 37

Your True Financial

PARTNERSHIP

For Dean Williams, a long term partnership is a better basis on which to conduct financial planning, and with a summer of unrest likely to have an impact on savings, investments and pensions, there’s never been a better time to seek truly professional financial advice... Words: Rob Davis.

DEAN WILLIAMS thought there was a better way to help clients. And he was proved right. The wealth management expert will soon celebrate the 10th anniversary of his business, Williams Wealth Consultancy. And in that time, he has combined the ability to get to know his clients and provide a tailored service with the security and stability that comes from being a Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management.

“Accountancy firms work retrospectively to base advice on what has already occurred in your financial life, but a consultation with a good wealth management company allows you to look forward, too, in order to make plans for your retirement, for provision of an inheritance for your children and to ensure you can capitalise on the hard work you’ve already put in, using the most taxefficient means.”

Williams Wealth Consultancy look after 190 million pounds of clients’ funds under management and our advice is backed up by the St. James’s Place advice guarantee, which guarantees the suitability of the advice given by members of the St. James’s Place Partnership when recommending any of the wealth management products and services available from companies in the Group, more details of which are set out on the Group’s website at www.sjp.co.uk/products.

Williams Wealth Consultancy’s 22 team members share a common goal in providing a relationship based on continuity and specialist knowledge.

“This is a security net that works in the clients’ favour, providing an additional blanket of reassurance for all clients. After a 14 year career in the military, and establishing myself as an IFA before the millennium, I went into the retail banking sector, and though there are things that the sector does right, I knew there were also improvements that could be made.” “So, my objective was to take the best things from the role of an IFA, or High Street bank and combine them, adding the backup of an affiliation with St. James’s Place. Being a standalone company, we can foster a good working relationship with our clients based

on a sound knowledge of their unique circumstances and their objectives. We can help them in the long term and ensure continuity of advice, evolving that advice throughout their lives.” “We’re relationship-based, not product focused, and that’s never been more important than it is right now. I’ve been in the financial services industry for over two decades and in that time I’ve witnessed the collapse of the ‘dotcom bubble;’ the 2007 crash; 2016’s Brexit vote and now... Covid.” “All of the above were unique sets of circumstances which presented potential challenges to our clients’ finances and to the plans they want to make in life.” “A consultation with us allows us to examine your circumstances in your own life and your financial objectives, whether that be pension, investment, tax or succession planning, as well as a broader understanding of the financial world and how current or future events are likely to impact on you and your plans.”

“We’ve four wealth planners, an in-house mortgage specialist, plus a whole support team aimed at making it easier to assess and take steps to improve your financial efficiency.” “We’re inviting those who are concerned about their finances following Covid, or those who recognise the value of a financial consultation to find out what we can offer in terms of our holistic approach to bespoke financial planning to meet you, your family and all your business needs.” “The difference in our approach is welcome because what we provide clients is not just efficient financial planning, but the peace of mind, reassurance and happiness that goes along with us facilitating a client’s future.” The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. n

Wills: What you need to know in 2020... Coronavirus has triggered a spike in the number of Wills being made, so we’ve debunked some common myths to make your Will-making experience easier A married couple both need to make a Will...

Even if you intend for the terms of your Wills to be identical or nearly identical, you both need to make a Will. These are commonly called mirror Wills. Marriage automatically invalidates a Will, but divorce doesn’t...

In England and Wales, marriage automatically revokes an existing Will that was in place by either person. Following marriage, if either party doesn’t make another Will and later dies, their estate will be distributed in accordance with intestacy rules. These are a set of rules which determine who will benefit from an estate using common guidelines. By contrast, divorce doesn’t automatically revoke an existing Will. The Will remains valid. However, if an existing Will is in place, divorce removes the spouse as an executor. Plus, any gifts to a former spouse in the Will would be invalid. Assets don’t automatically pass to the survivor of a cohabiting couple...

Contrary to popular belief, there’s no such thing as a common law spouse. If you’re cohabiting but not married, your assets won’t automatically pass to your partner upon your death.

This will depend on the provisions of any Will and also the ownership of your assets. Attorneys that are appointed in a Lasting Power of Attorney cannot act for you after you have died

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document in which you can appoint a person or persons to make decisions on your behalf. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney: the first covers decisions about your property and financial affairs and the second covers decisions about your health and welfare. A Lasting Power of Attorney expires when you die – at which point a Will takes effect. Your Executors are then responsible for the administration of your estate. Having a Will doesn’t determine if you need a Grant of Probate...

A Grant of Probate application is made by the Executor(s) of an estate and gives them the legal authority to deal with the person’s estate. Whether a Grant of Probate is needed is not determined by the fact that the individual had a Will. If the deceased had a Will, a Grant of Probate is applied for by the Executor(s). If he or she didn’t have a Will, a Grant of Letters of Administration is applied for by the Administrator(s). Whether a Grant of Probate is needed depends upon the assets which form part of the estate.

Debts don’t die upon death...

Debts don’t automatically vanish when someone dies. The estate of the deceased person is responsible for any debts that are owed. The assets which form part of their estate (such as property, savings, investments, shares) will be used to pay any debts outstanding before the estate is distributed to benefactors. This applies to the vast majority of debts left by the deceased. If the value of the debts is greater than the value of the assets in an estate, an estate is deemed insolvent. Debts then need to be paid in a specific order and great care should be taken in administering and distributing the estate. For help with any of the above, or with any aspect of making or amending a Will, contact our Probate Solicitor Danielle Sakseide by emailing danielle.sakseide @wilkinchapman.co.uk, or give her a call on 01472 246 693.

F H MANNING FINANCIAL SERVICES

F H Manning, for every stage of your financial journey... Back in 1980, the world was quite a different place. Filofaxes were in vogue and smartphones were the stuff of sci-fi. The only available electric vehicles were the dubious Sinclair C5 or the dairy’s milk floats which delivered your milk each morning. Few could countenance a world that became connected, globalised and where we’d be working longer, living longer and doing business globally, let along contemplate where that leaves the management of our finances. 40 years ago Horncastle-based F H Manning’s Malcolm Wright was advising both private and business clients, helping them to make sound decisions pertaining to their pension, investment and tax affairs. The advice he’s given may well have changed over four decades, but Malcolm’s approach and belief in developing a long-term working relationship based on mutual trust and openness certainly hasn’t. “The business was established 45 years ago and I joined it five years later, as a trainee, straight from college,” says Malcolm. “My colleague Claire Markham co-owns the business and has been here for 22 years and we’ve five other team members each of whom has a great deal of familiarity with our customers.” “We’re really happy to see the grandchildren of our original clients coming in to see us - third generation clients. That’s because we deliver financial planning, not products, providing advice for every different stage of our clients’ lives in the context of their career plans, family life and retirement ambitions.”

“Generally we start with the clients dream - their aims - and work back from that, backtracking their finances to help them achieve their goals.” “We’ve some business clients but we mostly serve a private client base. Though our ethos hasn’t changed too much, our clients’ options have. One notable change in recent years is the change in pension draw down rules which are giving those of retirement age more options for their future but warrant a discussion with an expert to ensure you’re aware of your choices.” “Auto-enrolment is another trend which has started to ensure a younger generation is more interested and more aware than ever about the need to fund their later life.” “Retirement is usually the trigger for many conversations pertaining to retirement, but the sooner you can plan for the future the better placed you are to segue it into your financial life.” “It’s a case of plus ça change; some things in the financial world change, but on the other hand there are constants too. Our ability to seek security for ourselves and our loved ones, to ensure we’re comfortable in later life and our need to feel financially in control are all aspects of our role that haven’t changed in 40 years.” “Having a team you can talk to, which has an abundance of expertise in house, plus the ability to work alongside solicitors or accountancy firms, and being able to trust that team can make a huge difference to your financial security and your peace of mind!” n

FOOD & DRINK

The Lincoln Hotel

on EASTGATE, LINCOLN Take time out and enjoy a dining room with a view. The Lincoln Hotel welcomes diners back after lockdown with a brand new menu served in its Cathedral Room, this month we meet Head Chef Billy Frost... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

IT’S 40°C OUTDOORS, the traffic is buzzing past, scaffolding smothers the Cathedral and of course, the jury’s still out on whether Covid is still ravaging the city. But you’d never know it. Inside the Lincoln Hotel, it’s as serene as ever. There’s just a slight hum of the air conditioning, the sight of the Cathedral beyond the huge expanse of glass covering the front of the building and some inoffensive music in the hotel’s lounge. Next to me a lady is reading a book with a pretty rubbish sounding title (I’m tempted to bung her a copy of Pride to read instead), a couple of friends are catching up over a coffee and I’m enjoying a moment of peace and quiet, just me and the ghost of Tennyson, whose statue is located in the grounds of the Cathedral opposite. The hotel is an odd one. Completely different in style to the city’s historic buildings or to Lincolnshire’s myriad of Farrow & Ballsed up country pubs. A hulking modernist

Our national architectural vernacular may have changed, but one thing that hasn’t is The Lincoln Hotel’s ability to provide consistently good dining. Which is why we’re delighted that the hotel is thriving, especially in a post-lockdown economy. The hotel’s owner Christopher Nevile installed new management a couple of years ago and the present team are doing a grand job. Working their way through a rolling programme of refurbishment for the hotel’s

71 bedrooms, the team had intended to then refurbish and repurpose the rooms on the ground floor. Suffice to say that this year things haven’t gone to plan anywhere in the hospitality industry. As part of the plans, the team intended to run a single menu in the Cathedral Room – the 80-ish cover glazed front, adjacent to the lounge – and refresh the Green Room as a more upmarket version of itself serving a 6/6/6 à la carte dining room with separate tasting menu for private functions. Instead, the Green Room will reopen post-Covid and

plans were expedited for the Cathedral Room’s new menu which will be available to both lunchtime and evening diners. Head Chef Billy Frost and his team are brilliant; clearly hard working, concerned with presentation as well as flavour and as strong technically as they are creatively. The Lincoln Hotel’s new menu comprises five starters, 11 main courses, four desserts and a range of sandwiches and pizzas, plus an afternoon tea option for £16/head. Fish is landed at Grimsby Dock and then arrives daily via M&J Seafoods. Meat is sourced from Owen Taylor, whilst local suppliers provide fruit, veg and fresh supplies. The kitchen bakes its own bread, makes its own ice creams and sorbets, creates its own desserts and its own sauces. The hotel has proved immensely popular since reopening and prior to lockdown plans for Christmas and New Year celebrations were confirmed.

The last few spaces are still up for grabs for Christmas lunch at the hotel - if you’re quick - and there are spaces for a £99/ticket New Year’s Eve celebration with dining and entertainment. On New Year’s Day, the hotel will also host a carvery for diners who feel a little too delicate to cook after the previous evening’s festivities. Naturally such plans are still subject to the curse of 2020, but all being well, it’ll be a return to business as normal in time to celebrate seeing off this horrid year in style. Meanwhile, The Lincoln Hotel’s outdoor spaces will be even more popular in spring 2021 when the new Cathedral visitors’ centre opens opposite. So, for a welcome moment of serenity amid all the chaos, or for afternoon tea with a great view, The Lincoln Hotel remains one of the most recommendable and modern dining rooms in the city with some of the most consistently good food you’re likely to encounter. n

Plate of pork with slow-cooked pork belly, Parma ham wrapped pork tenderloin, braised pork cheek, fondant potato, mini toffee apple, apple purée and jus £17. Beef short rib with chive mashed potatoes, red onion rings, stockpot turnip and beef jus £19. Dessert Strawberry cheesecake with strawberry tartare, meringue and sorbet £7. Belgian chocolate and hazelnut delice with candied hazelnuts and clotted cream ice cream £7. NB: Featured dishes are subject to change.

FARMING WITH L J FAIRBURN

Let’s Get

CRACKING It’s British Egg Week and World Egg Day this month, so let’s get cracking and find out how Lincolnshire producer L J Fairburn is working hard to ensure a farming operation that’s based on ethics and animal welfare… Words: Rob Davis.

IF EVER THERE WAS A FOOD which needed to come out of its shell, it’s the humble egg. Despite it being a breakfast favourite, a vital ingredient in our baking, a fast and nutritious snack, etc., eggs can often be taken for granted as a simple store cupboard staple, rather than the superfood they are. And that’s a position which Alford-based L J Fairburn & Son is determined to rectify. The business is owned by Stuart and Judy Fairburn and is run by their son, CEO Daniel Fairburn. Daniel is supported by his wife Sarah Louise, Commercial & Sustainability Director, and sisters Caroline Fairburn-Wright, Business Director and Sarah Hall, Operations Director.

In terms of scale, the company’s 23 farms and 90 units look after five million hens which lay over 884m eggs every single year… which totals up to around 17m eggs every single week. Pretty impressive numbers, and nationally we consume a gigantic 13,348,000,000 eggs each year - around four a week each - with 87% of them laid by British hens. Research shows that eggs are one of nature’s most nutrient-packed foods, and as they can be cooked so quickly and in so many ways, are an ideal part of a healthy balanced diet. “But we tend to take eggs, well, a little for granted,” points out Sarah Louise. 55

Lincolnshire - October (219).qxp 07/09/2020 09:23 Page 56

“And why not? They’re available at every supermarket, across the country, and they’re a food staple.” “However, eggs are perfect in providing some extra protein for your diet. They’re a great source of Vitamins A and D, which have been found to assist in the functioning of the immune system. Eggs are also rich in Vitamin B12, currently possessing 80% of your recommended Vitamin B12 intake.” 63% of consumers now opt for free range eggs and in recent years, the industry has eggs-panded the variety of eggs on offer, with lots of speciality products now available. LJ Fairburn was at the forefront of this premium egg movement when it created its own bespoke hen breed, the British Blue. These exclusive hens were developed, hatched and reared in Lincolnshire, and their eggs’ appeal go quite beyond the subtle blue colour of their shells.

56

“By including ingredients like paprika and marigold in the feed, and by creating our own, 100% British origin bespoke breed, we’re able to create eggs that have a gloriously bright yolk,” says Sarah. “A more golden yolk is generally a sign that it has a richer, creamier flavour. Our British Blues also provide a much larger yolk, and a greater ‘yolk to white’ ratio, which all our consumers say they love!” “We worked closely with top geneticists to develop the correct genetics, to hatch, rear, and nurture these new hens into the beautiful, opulent egg layer that she is today,” says Sarah.

“Welfare really is paramount, not just because it’s the right thing to ensure morally, but because the quality of the product depends on it, too...”

Whilst British Blues may be the poshest birds on the farm, all hens across L J Fairburn’s operation have a good life, enjoying a diet of wheat and maize grown on the farm. “Welfare is the most important aspect of the whole industry,” says Sarah Louise.

“If you look after your birds they’re happier, healthier and they naturally produce a better product.”

same ones you’re enjoying for breakfast tomorrow morning

“There are no shortcuts to welfare, and buying chicks at a day old, then producing our own feed, allows us to control the supply chain and ensure we’re happy that the standards we set are being maintained.” “Welfare is absolutely paramount, not just because it’s the right thing to ensure morally, but because the quality of the product depends on it too.”

freshest eggs of the finest quality. The family commitment has always been to re-invest in the business to ensure it continues successfully for future generations.

The family has their own fleet of 22 lorries to distribute feed, collect eggs, and deliver finished products to retail partners.

There are no shortcuts to collecting the eggs, either. The farm’s team members begin work at 6am each morning with a stroll around each of the units checking the hens and collecting the eggs.

Production, milling and packing facilities are all within a 25 mile radius which facilitates its integration through carefully managed processes. In control of every process from day old chick to the family fridge, a short and finely tuned supply chain delivers the

Each hen typically lays an egg a day and the eggs which are collected today will be the Above: Banish Autumn blues by starting the day with a British Blues!

As for how the family enjoys theirs? Well, with youngsters in the family, boiled eggs with dippy soldiers are a particular favourite, but for those seeking a little inspiration, the company’s website has a number of recipes using not only their own eggs but plenty of other Lincolnshire produce besides. With over 60 years in the industry, the family’s business has grown, but not at the expense of its ethics and welfare - or innovation. And with local provenance assured, as well as great tasting produce, in our mind, when it comes to choosing the perfect egg, L J Fairburn’s expertise puts it right at the top of the pecking order. n For more information and local stockists, see www.fairburnseggs.co.uk. In the KITCHEN If there’s not ‘mushroom’ in your busy schedule to create dazzling dishes, you’ll love this quick, easy and very satisfying brunch dish that utilises eggs from Lincolnshire’s L J Fairburn...

MUSHROOM RAREBIT with L J Fairburn Eggs Serves Four. Preparation Time: 15 minutes. Ingredients: Rapeseed oil, for frying • 50g butter • 4 large flat mushrooms, skin on, stalks removed few sprigs of fresh thyme • Sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 tsp English mustard 150g cheddar cheese, grated • 1 tsp Marmite • 4 Fairburn’s British Blue eggs, plus 2 yolks Dash of milk • Grilled vine tomatoes, to serve • Fresh watercress or pea shoots, to serve Put a large frying pan onto a medium heat and add the oil and butter. Once the butter has melted, add the mushrooms, scatter over the thyme and season with some sea salt and ground black pepper. Cook over a gentle heat until cooked through. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, combine the mustard, cheese, Marmite, the two egg yolks and add a dash of milk. Remove the mushrooms from the frying pan and place on a baking sheet, stalk side up.

Divide the rarebit mixture between the 4 mushrooms. Add the four eggs to the frying pan and fry until lightly set. Whilst the eggs are cooking, place the mushrooms under a medium grill until the cheese is bubbling and golden in colour. On individual plates, place a Welsh Rarebit mushroom and top with a fried egg. Serve immediately with the tomatoes and watercress or pea shoots. n

Wine of the Month

The artisan gin that’s music to your ears...

San Leo Prosecco Brut NV, Veneto, Italy £9.99 / 75cl / 11% ABV

Bandsman Gin is a thoroughly brilliant artisan gin with a unique flavour profile thanks to its use of tomatoes, basil and elderflower in addition to its other botanicals. “Our original gin launched in July 2019,” says James Wood. “We have poured our pride and love into Bandsman Gin to create a crisp, fresh-tasting spirit with strong juniper overtones. The result is a smooth, almost creamy taste to the gin allowing it to be enjoyed with a variety of mixers.” £34 / 50cl / 40% ABV. bandsmangin.co.uk

BACK TO BORDEAUX: A trio of French fancies for Autumn... 1. Château Laroque SaintÉmilion Grand Cru Classé is available at Waitrose and provides a superb Merlot-dominated profile, with rich, fragranced fruit. £29.99 / 75cl / 13.5% ABV.

2. Château Thieuley 2013, Bordeaux is a white Bordeaux with exotic fruit favours with subtle citrus and grapefruit notes. Exclusive to Waitrose, it’s one of the driest wines from the region and has a Semillon/Sauvignon grape mix. £10.99 / 75cl / 13.5% ABV.

3. And finally, Château Guiraud, Sauternes 2014 is a Bordeaux which is sweet, with a honey hue and tropical fruit on the nose and palate. £34.99 / 75cl / 14.4% ABV.

HOMES & INTERIORS

THE DIGITAL

DES RES If you’re looking for a property in the country, but you’re partial to a few creature comforts, this month’s home near Long Sutton should appeal. It’s a house in the country but also a digital des res! Words: Rob Davis. Images: Dean Fisher.

In a quiet, rural spot near to Long Sutton, there’s a fabulous unique property standing on approximately four acres. An old cottage? Hardly! St James Road is a country house for a digital world! It comprises a stunning three bedroomed house which has been built to the highest standard and specification and complimented by a very versatile two bedroomed annexe renovated to the same exacting standards as the main house. Both properties are extremely economical to run, and presented in immaculate order. It is a beautiful and outstanding home that successfully marries a traditional external style with a slick, contemporary interior. Main: The high gloss cashmere kitchen includes a living/dining area with wood burner.

“We wanted to create a house where every elevation was different; together we came up with the design and handed plans and sketches to the architect to finalise,” say Andrew and Carla Sloan. “Everything has been extremely well considered, even to the point of argument to ensure we attained the perfect end result!” The house wasn’t a straightforward construction, thanks to its steep, juxtaposed roofs. The brickwork detail though is second to none, in particular the ‘tumbling-in’ along the gable ends, an age-old method normally seen on historic buildings and only achieved by experienced, master craftsmen. An interesting, harmonising feature too is the portion added on the east wing, designed to resemble an extension, differing from the rest with its timber-clad exterior colour-

“Everything has been well considered, even to the point of argument to ensure we attained the perfect end result!” matched to the timber window frames of the house, and its slate roof co-ordinating with the lead work, as well as the dark window and door frames complementing the cottage and garage doors. The bricks were handmade in Yorkshire, and apart from the reception room, which has wall to wall carpeting, Brazilian slate is throughout the downstairs with underfloor heating run from a very economical air source heat pump. A dramatic entrance hall features a totally unique bespoke staircase,

designed by the owners, with glass balustrading around oak treads on a central metal spine fitted with LED lighting for superb illumination. The dual aspect living room has an exposed brick fireplace housing a modern Firebelly log-burner, and benefits French doors onto a south west facing patio. The L-shaped kitchen diner has a state-ofthe-art fitted kitchen at one end with a mix of anthracite and cashmere glossy contemporary units by Lochanna with subtly sparkling, solid white quartz worktops. All the integrated appliances are Bosch: two ovens, an induction hob, a microwave, a fridge freezer, and a dishwasher. There’s a hot water tap and a waste disposal unit, plus a built-in wine cooler too. Meanwhile, in the dining and living area where an expanse of bi-fold doors connect 69

to the large south facing patio, a curvaceous, log burner by Scan with 45 degree glass so that when the fire is lit, it reflects in all the glazing surrounding the room creating a magical effect. “It’s a fantastic entertaining space.” Upstairs, the master bedroom is spectacular with double doors onto a south facing balcony with glass balustrading and a vast en suite with tinted glass partition, that accommodates a bath and digital shower. The master bedroom also has a walk-in dressing room. “The views from the balcony are wonderful – you can sit and enjoy a cup of tea in the morning with the sun to the east, or have a glass of wine in the evening admiring the incredible sunsets to the west,” they say.

Right: The property also has a two-bedroom selfcontained annexe currently being used as a holiday let. The house itself is set in four acres.

70

Lincolnshire - October (219).qxp 07/09/2020 09:24 Page 71

The other two bedrooms, again a wonderful size, mirror each other either side of the landing, one benefits from its own dressing room and the other from a contemporary glazed Juliet balcony. Both bedrooms have en suites which are also fitted with Aqualisa Digital showers. And the technology doesn’t stop there… solar panels help to provide green electricity and heating, whilst hard wired ethernet in all rooms and hidden trunking for wall mounted TVs, plus a professional grade high resolution CCTV system supplementing electronic entrance gates, ensure the house is touch-button convenient wherever possible. Outdoors, the property also has a separate garage and cart shed echoing the style of the annexe, tucked into a corner of the expansive gravel driveway on the site of old stables. A spacious and luxurious property packed with technology, St James Road is an ideal property for those who want to live in the country… but aren’t quite ready for a completely analogue life! n

The idea behind Studio 11 Architecture is as simple as it is refreshingly modern. From its studios in Lincoln, this Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) registered practice offers a service that's perfect for people looking to realise their own grand design.

From its early days in Kris’ spare bedroom over a decade ago, Studio 11 Architecture has grown to a multidisciplined practice that's completed everything from extensions and one-off builds up to large-scale residential developments involving dozens of individual properties.

“We like to take out a great deal of the stress and worry involved in a building project,” says founder, Chartered Architectural Technologist Kris Baxter.

“We like to produce the very best modern architecture we can within the budget of the client," says associate Johnathon Gower. “That doesn't mean compromising on looks – there are some really simple elements of design that cost nothing but that can make all the difference.”

“Instead of having to deal with an architect, planning consultant, structural engineer or roads and sewers designer, we can offer you one single design team that can design and deliver the whole project from start to finish.”

The pair met when Kris undertook some work for a local architectural practice in the first few years of Studio 11 Architecture, and worked

so well together that Johnathon jumped at the chance to join the practice. “One of the reasons we make such a great team is that we both agree that the client is the most important part of the design process,” says Johnathon. “We’re not going to force something too cutting-edge or too traditional on anyone - we produce designs that suit the function and usability of a building and ‘speak’ the vernacular of the surrounding area.” If you're currently planning a project of your own, please contact Studio 11 Architecture who would relish the opportunity to work together to make the completed project everything you ever dreamed of. n

TURNBULL OF LINCOLNSHIRE AND NEWARK

Celebrating 125 Years of

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS As the third generation of her family to look after a business with 125 years of provenance, Olivia Hopkins puts Turnbull’s success down to an ethos of offering the latest ranges of kitchens and bathrooms and the highest standards of customer service… Words: Rob Davis.

If you’ve spent the summer in lockdown at home, rather than on a sunny beach, chances are you’ve noticed all the little flaws in your kitchen and bathroom. Have you found your bathroom and kitchen no longer work for the way you live? Perhaps a re-design of your kitchen to reflect your family circumstances and the time you spend together with family and friends is something you need. Maybe revamping your bathroom to include a walk-in shower would work better for you than the traditional layout of your current bathroom. “We’ve had a great deal of interest this summer,” says Olivia Hopkins, who’s Group Showroom Manager and the third generation of the Hopkins family at the helm of the family business. For 125 years the company has provided quality products and great service, latterly working directly with consumers as well as trades. “Our Sleaford showroom has never been busier, with customers reporting that in lieu of a holiday this year, they’ll put their money into their homes, but we’re still a little surprised to hear that some customers don’t realise we have showrooms in six locations across Lincolnshire and Newark, with over 100 kitchen and bathroom displays in total.” “We still work in partnership with trades to provide their materials and supplies, but we

also work directly with the public and provide kitchens and bathrooms with a full design service. We’ve always put fairness and respect for customers at the heart of what we do, and because of that we have a strictly no-pressure-selling approach, and our staff work on a non-commission basis.” “That means you’ll never encounter pushy salespeople and you’ll only ever be guided towards products which suit your home and your lifestyle. There’s simply no substitute for seeing our products in person and feeling their quality. It’s a better way to gain an impression of the products we supply than just looking through a brochure.” “We’ve both traditional and contemporary kitchens from some industry-leading names like Symphony and Rotpunkt as well as engineered stone surfaces from brands like Cosentino which provide exceptional value and durability whilst keeping the cost of your project reasonable. In the bathroom, you’ll enjoy the quality of brands like Duravit and Hansgrohe, and we’ve a huge range of appliances and accessories from names like Siemens, Neff and Quooker.” “An investment in a new kitchen or bathroom is an investment not just in your home but in your lifestyle too. We’re profoundly aware of that, which is why we want to make the experience of improving your home a pleasure, from start to finish.” n

Find Out More: Turnbull Kitchens & Bathrooms has showrooms in Sleaford, Boston, Newark and Brigg, plus a new 7,500sq ft showroom on Lincoln’s Deacon Road. FENWICK LANDSCAPES

Teaching an Old Garden

NEW TRICKS

Lincolnshire’s Jake Fenwick proves that a garden can be transformed with some thoughtful landscaping. The professional landscaper recently completed this quarter-acre site for his most discerning customer yet: Olive, the French Bulldog. Her verdict? Grrr-eat! Words: Rob Davis.

92

Lincolnshire - October (219).qxp 07/09/2020 09:25 Page 93

If your garden is looking tired, or if you’ve found yourself lacking a place to relax during lockdown, now’s the time to contemplate a transformation of your plot. It’s the landscaping equivalent of teaching an old dog new tricks; incorporating better planting for lower maintenance, using hard landscaping to create areas in which to relax and creating new vantage points to admire the view or soak up the sun. Speaking of dogs Olive, the blue-grey French Bulldog, approves of the transformation Jake Fenwick of Lincolnshire-based Fenwick Landscapes has recently made of the quarter-acre site she and her owners Daniel Roma and Emma Wittingham call home in North Lincolnshire. The waggy-tale starts when the family moved in 18 months ago, and though the property and its grounds

are less than 20 years old, the gardens had already ‘gone to the dogs.’ Jake designs his projects in collaboration with his clients, bringing their wishlist to life. After a comprehensive consultation, he creates both computer aided designs and sketches to ensure a client can be completely happy with the design prior to starting work. Back on site, Jake cleared seven mature trees, removed 50m of hedges and most significantly, levelled out the uneven plot and replacing rubble with quality topsoil. To prevent the site looking like a ‘bowling green’ Jake incorporated gentle organic curves into his design and used porcelain tiled edged with contrasting granite, creating a ‘lounge’ area around the curved bed to make the most of the late-evening sunshine.

Weeds are kept at bay with slate chips, the re-turfed lawns are even and immaculate, whilst the garden’s planting scheme includes perennials like lavender and grasses for year-round low-maintenance foliage. “The clients were great to work with” says Jake. “The majority of work for a hard-landscaping project is the unseen preparation and dig-out that’s so crucial in ensuring a job which will look good for years to come.” As a Marshall registered installer, Jake has also completed a stunning display currently on show at Jewsons on Lincoln’s Deacon Road, showcasing his 14 years of landscaping experience. Just as every dog has its day, this garden is now looking great, with Olive and her family finally able to enjoy a relaxing outdoor space. n

n Covering the whole of Lincolnshire, Jake Fenwick of Fenwick Landscapes works on hard and soft-landscaping projects from small plots to sites of several acres. For a free, no-obligation discussion of how to improve your outdoor spaces, call 07899 235415 or see www.fenwicklandscapes.co.uk 93

The Green Deal that’ll help to keep you warm all winter long... New windows and doors can contribute to reducing your annual energy bills and qualify for grants under the new Government Green Deal... Homeowners in England can apply for vouchers of up to £5000 from the Government to help make their homes more energy efficient. The vouchers are to help pay for more environmentally friendly improvements such as loft, floor and wall insulation, or replacing single glazed windows and doors with double glazing. New Energy efficient doorsets replacing pre 2002 ones also qualify. There are two classes of improvements that will qualify, all the insulation work to walls, lofts and floors are classed as primary work and you need to commission this work in order to get the glazing mentioned approved. Applications for the grant can be submitted starting September 2020 and will run through until the mid-part of next year. In any event installing modern windows and doors should be considered even if the grant does not win approval, your energy bills will reduce and help pay for the improvements as well as adding considerable value to your home. The recent history regarding the development of modern windows and doors is worth consideration. The high demand for double glazing sales in the late 1970s and through the 80s was driven by poorly maintained windows and doors that were installed in the post war building boom. The motivation for the purchase was usually driven by the increase in home ownership and the deterioration of the existing windows

which were single glazed wood or steel framed, drafty and kept little heat in the house. Keeping up with the neighbours was also a significant driver with little thought other than the added insulation from double glazing was evident. Aluminium was the first material used for frames by double glazing firms that initiated the sale and then came uPVC which by the end of the last century was the dominant material. Improvements in the development of engineered timber components have now made wood a suitable material for the frame to giver longer life expectancy and other key benefits, like security and ability to meet conservation requirements. Today the world has moved on and we now must face up to the changing climate, cost and replacement of fossil fuels and the need to conserve energy. We are being told every day how to insulate our houses, reduce our energy bills and prepare for the future by recognising the change being made in the Building Regulations and Codes of Practice. On the back of the awareness now of global warming, the carbon footprint is all important. The Government has issued targets for energy conservation and wants to achieve a zero carbon society by 2050, this means that any energy consumed in the process and the ongoing running must be offset by carbon gains and renewable energy resources. n

WEDDINGS

SMILE & BE

HAPPY Open wide and say ‘aah!’as this month Abbie Harris, a Sleaford dental practice manager, beams with delight as she marries her fiancé Tom Brooks at the beautiful Irnham Hall... Photographer: Jessy Jones Photography, 07947514456, www.jessyjonesphotography.co.uk.

There’s no wonder Abbie Harris sported a dazzling smile on her wedding day. Working as the Practice Manager for a dentist in Sleaford, Abbie met Tom eight years ago through mutual friends. A great friendship blossomed into a relationship and the couple set up home together.

WEDDING SUPPLIERS ABBIE & TOM

Abbie reckons Tom isn’t always that romantic but we’re not so sure... after a busy day at work two years ago, the bride-to-be arrived home to find Tom has cooked supper, covered the house in flowers and of course was primed and ready to drop down on one knee and pop the question. Sounds pretty romantic to us, and it certainly had the desired effect as Abbie said ‘yes’ immediately! Usually a bride’s first and most significant decision is the venue since that necessary determines the date and the style of the wedding. On this occasion though Abbie had an idea who she wanted to work with for her photography, and everything hinged on that. “I’ve never planned a wedding before but I’d seen the wedding pictures from a friend’s day and the photographer was Jessy Jones. I loved her photos so much that it meant booking Jessy was the first decision.” “I gave her two or three dates and once I’d confirmed when she was available, I started to look at wedding venues. We spotted Irnham Hall near Grantham, which hadn’t

been open for weddings for too long at that point, but it looked so grand and imposing that we weren’t sure it was right for us.” “We still went to visit it though, hoping we wouldn’t fall in love... that proved to be a futile move though because as soon as we pulled up we absolutely loved the place.” “Owners Jamie and Leila are so friendly and welcoming but also so knowledgeable about the place and its history. It’s a family home so there’s a nice feel to the estate but it’s also an amazing place for photographs. It has a classic style but it also has all of the nice modern touches you need for a wedding. We were married in the civil ceremony room and hosted a reception in the orangery for about 150 people.”

“We used Apple Catering for our wedding canapés on the lawn and our wedding breakfast. We wanted comfort food on the menu so we asked for sausages and mash! Later in the day we had Kiln Pizza providing stone baked pizzas for guests.” “My dress proved a bit of a nightmare. I chose one but two weeks before the day I changed my mind. Sleaford’s Love & Lace helped me to find a dress at such short notice, fitted, with a lace overlay. I was much happier with it!” “I must acknowledge my mum’s efforts too. She’s owns a floristry business, Petal Perfect, in Swineshead and so she worked really hard 101

- WEDDINGS -

“It’s important to take some time out to spend with your husband, enjoy every second; just step back occasionally to take it all in!” to create some of the most beautiful wedding flowers I’ve ever seen. We wanted a classical, natural feel to the day so mum incorporated lots of garden foliage and greenery, it was a really lovely look!” “We used Julie from Invigraph Stationery for our invitations and our wedding singer was Mark Elliott. He was really good, providing soft mucic when we walked down the aisle and background music when our guests were dining. In the evening he also provided a disco as well.” “There was another ‘musician’ in attendance on the day too... my dad got out his guitar during the speeches and performed a really funny song instead of a speech. It was hilarious and the guests were all in stitches.” “We deferred our honeymoon from October until March, which proved a mistake as lockdown came along. We celebrate our first anniversary this month so we were hoping that we’d get away for that, but it looks like we’ll be planning something for our second anniversary, instead!” “Another supplier I think deserves a mention is Lincs Videography. When you have a photographer you question whether you need a wedding video too but the two do a completely different job and we were amazed just how many moments and how much of the day it captured.” “I think that’s what surprised me most about the day. It went to quickly, so if I’ve any advice for brides planning their day, it’s to take some time out to spend with your new husband, enjoy every second and just step back occasionally to take it all in!” n 102

DENTAL HEALTH CENTRE

25 Years of Creating BEAUTIFUL SMILES

For over 25 years Colin Sutton and his team at the Dental Health Centre have been specialising in creating beautiful smiles and happy patients. This autumn, why not discover how visiting the dentist can be a pleasure, not a chore? WHY SHOULD YOU dread something that’s so good for you? Why can’t staying healthy and looking great be a pleasure, not a chore? That’s what Colin Sutton wondered, 25 years ago. Back in 2005, David Cameron took over as head of the Conservative Party, Dr Who returned to our screens, and we were rocking out to a series of Live 8 concerts. Closer to home, Colin sought to create a dental practice which would put patients at ease and offer a range of treatments to improve both the health and appearance of their smiles in a welcoming and professional environment. Grantham’s Dental Health Centre, run by Colin Sutton with dentists Simon Reeves and Elisa Lago Garcia alongside their team, is one of the best and most modern, wellequipped, user-friendly practices offering everything from general dentistry to the latest cosmetic treatments, all virtually pain-free in a contemporary, well-equipped practice. The practice also invests in the latest technology to ensure patients receive the most prompt service possible. For instance, crown patients benefit from the Centre’s CEREC machine - a sophisticated computer controlled milling machine which takes a 3D scan of the mouth and allows Colin and the team to design, then mill, replacement crowns with sub-millimetre

Another patient, Mrs Welton of Grantham says: “A lot of people who live around here think they need to go to London for the best care but they don’t realise what an absolute gem they have on their doorstep.” Best of all, the centre offers a free implant consultation - no-obligation, pain-free guidance on how modern dentistry can help to improve your smile. With such a vast array of treatments on offer, it can be difficult to know which course of action would best suit your needs. accuracy whilst the patient waits, preventing the need for a second visit. Colin Sutton also specialises in creating implants to replace missing teeth with dental implants that look, feel and work like the real thing. Dental implants are specially designed to match and blend in with your existing teeth and can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or provide a secure anchor for bridges or dentures. One of their recent patients, Mrs C from Lincoln says: “Implants have changed my life. The treatment has made such a fantastic difference to my appearance and my health! It sounds melodramatic but this has changed my life. The treatment has made such a fantastic difference both to my appearance and my health too.”

That’s why Colin Sutton has enlisted the help of treatment coordinator Paula Parkes to provide free, consultations so potential patients can discuss the options available to them. Paula can assess the potential for improving the appearance of your smile, then talk through viable treatments so you can make an informed decision about the procedure, time scale, cost and benefits. “The service we offer isn’t just dentistry,” says Paula. “We provide our patients with confidence and reassurance. A dental practice that will take care of people and offer a great service doesn’t just give them a better smile, it also gives them something to smile about too, which is such a pleasure.” “The happiness of a patient after their treatment is why we love our job and why we’ve been such a successful practice over the past 25 years!” n

DBX-Factor The handling and performance of a sports car, but designed to function well on the area’s broken road surfaces. Aston Martin thinks it has created the perfect compromise for those torn between performance and practicality... Words: Rob Davis.

SPORTS CARS are all well and good on the track, when the surface is smooth and even, but our roads are in a poor state to say the least, making a 4x4 de rigueur in our part of the world. Given the state of our roads it’s little surprise that SUVs with their heightened ride and larger wheels are storming ahead in the sales charts compared to saloon and estate cars. When Porsche release its Cayenne 4x4 the motoring world was surprised, but the car has proven a sales success over the past 18 years, leading equally unlikely manufacturers to announce their own SUVs; Bentley’s Bentayga, Rolls Royce’s Cullinan, the Lamborghini Urus etc etc...

122

Aston announced its DBX off-roader some time ago but hasn’t exactly rushed to get it to market. Recently, Aston’s boss Andy Palmer was replaced by former Mercedes AMG lead Tobias Moers... a shame really, as Andy returned the company to profit and has been a steady hand for Aston. The DBX is Andy’s last motor, his swan song, as it were. In short; it’s brilliant. DBX offers the practicality of a four seater, four wheel drive SUV and is able to stomp over potholes and pitted roads, dodgy verges and gravelled areas, or squaddy fields. Ironically, given that an AMG man has ousted Palmer, it’s Mercedes AMG which supplied the DBX’s engine. >>

>> Still, there are few better powerplants that come to mind... it’s a lovely 4.0V8 twinturbocharged unit that generates 550ps and 700nm torque. The DBX will reach 60mph in 4.5 seconds, and blast on to 181mph if you’re on a closed track. You’ll be lucky to achieve the claimed 19.7mpg though. Given the DBX’s elegant profile it’s difficult to gauge its size, but for the record the 2.8 tonne SUV is as wide as a Bentley Bentayga and 4cm longer than a Range Rover. With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space. The load 124

“The DBX looks the part and has the luxury and power necessary to justify its £158,000 price. It could also consolidate the 4x4 and the sports car sitting on your driveway...” space offers a practical and cleanly designed space. A narrow load sill and broad aperture maximises the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment. The seats are trimmed in sumptuous, full grain leather, sourced from long term partner Bridge of Weir whilst a 10.25” TFT screen sits elegantly flush in the centre console, while a huge 12.3” TFT screen provides a wealth of information to the driver.

Apple CarPlay comes as standard, as does a 360-degree camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64 different colours in two zones. The DBX certainly looks the part and has the luxury and performance necessary to justify its £160,230 price tag. If that seems steep then fine, but consider this; the DBX has the capacity to consolidate your Range Rover ‘daily driver’ with your ‘something for the weekend’ Aston, in a single car. n

Four by Roar: All Wheel Drive performance cars...

Lamborghini Urus £159,925: Using a 4.0V8 twin-turbo Lamborghini takes a gamble on producing an SUV which would perhaps best suit the slippery winter slopes of Val d’Aosta, the Urus may have an unpleasant sounding name but you can’t argue with its 641bhp, 3.3 second 60mph dash or its whopping 23” wheels. Certainly not for those who like to make a discreet entrance! n

Maserati Levante Trofeo £124,900: An exotic brand, and a bit of a left-field choice among a sea of AMG and Range Rover Sports. Lots of natural leathers and shimmering veneers to choose from but only one engine choice in the Trofeo flagship; it’s a 3.8 litre V8 that’s good for 572bhp, 60mph in 3.9 seconds and 188mph flat out on a track. Traction is excellent, and the Levante will appeal to keen drivers but arguably more modest models in the range have just as much appeal as an exotic sports SUV. n

ASTON MARTIN DBX Price: £160,230. Drivetrain: 4.0 V8 twin-turbo, 700nm torque, 550ps. Performance: 0-62 mph: 4.5 seconds. Top Speed: 181mph. Economy: 19.7mpg. Equipment: Leather upholstery, 360° camera, navigation, climate, folding rear seats, 10” screen with infotainment system, nine-speed auto gearbox. n

Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition £86,685: The larger Range Rover Sport is looking a little older and more conservative next its smaller style-oriented sibling, the Velar. Despite the fact that its design cues - like flush door handles - are halo-ing down other models in company’s lineup, the Velar is still the loveliest looking Range Rover, hence our recommendation here over the larger Sport model. Despite a long and silly name, this flagship offers ludicrous performance from its lovely 5.0V8 engine. n

The Perfect ‘Daily Driver’ Few cars blend the tremendous breadth of capability, luxury or desirability like BMW’s 5-Series, and for those who are eco-conscious, or running their car as a company vehicle, the 545e XDrive is a sublime proposition... If you’re having electric dreams but want a mainstream luxury car, BMW’s 545e XDrive might be the perfect proposition... especially if you’re a company driver.

commuting between home and the workplace, but also excels through dynamic performance and comfortable longdistance travel.

Five seats? Check. Decent boot? Check. Electric range of 34 miles and WLTP figure of 217mpg, plus a tax-friendly sub-50g/km CO2 figure? Check mate.

The BMW 5-Series is fitted with a 400V lithium-ion battery which is positioned under the rear seat in order to save space. With a luggage volume of 410 litres, the transport capacity of the BMW 545e xDrive is only slightly smaller than of those model variants which are fitted with a conventional engine.

The 545e alo has four wheel drive, beautifully balanced handling and a beautiful luxurious interior, with performance akin to a sports car but none of the spoilers or huge alloys. It’s the ultimate sports car that you can use every day. Thanks to intelligently controlled interaction between both drive systems, the new BMW 545e xDrive combines the best of two worlds. It facilitates not only purely electric driving in urban traffic and efficient

BMW 545e XDrive Price: TBC. Engine: 3.0V6 turbo plus 12kWh electric. Performance: 0-60mpg 4.7 secs, top speed 155mph. Interior: Leather, sat nav, heated seats, cruise and climate control. n

Drivers can take advantage of the car’s Jekyll and Hyde personality by means of a simple switch to change from economy to sport and bias the hybrid system accordingly. Best of all? Well, as a 5-Series, it’s still one of the best executive cars around, even with all the additional tech. n

Defender’s Back

JIM RATCLIFFE £40,000 BMW-ENGINED DEFENDER UNVEILED AHEAD OF 2021

Fancy a brand new Bentley for just £6,995? Just one catch... Snapping up a Bentley for under seven grand might seem like an opportunity too good to pass up... although there is a slight catch. It’s a 1:8 scale replica. Bentley has invested meticulous attention to detail and thousands of hours into crafting the exquisite model, which features impeccably-copied cross-stitching for the seats, lustrous wood veneers on the dash and plush carpets. Even the doors and boot open to allow you to admire the intricately replicated interior! n BENTLEY

GRENADIER When you’ve £50bn in the bank, like British engineer Jim Ratcliffe, you can take certain liberties. Like not taking no for an answer when Land Rover announced the Defender would be no more. Of course, Land Rover has presented us with a brand new and rather brilliant Defender, but for some it’s too digital; far too luxurious. For those people, news of Jim Ratcliffe’s

Grenadier will probably appeal more than Land Rover’s new Defender iteration. His car shamelessly copies the Defender design and uses a BMW-sourced V8 which Ratcliffe believe will provide a car more faithful to the ethos of the original Defender when it goes on sale in 2021. We’re promised an interior that can be hosed out and rugged, back to basics mechanicals. n

MINI MINI Plant Oxford has hit a significant milestone by building more than 11,000 MINI Electrics since production began, just before the plant’s annual summer shutdown. Premiered in July 2019, during the brand’s 60th anniversary year, MINI’s first all-electric model is fully integrated into the production process at Oxford, running down the same line as the combustion engine models. Since its launch, more than 3,000 MINI Electric orders have been placed in the UK. Priced at £24,900 the Mini Electric has a range of 145 miles, and takes 12 hours to charge at home. n

NEWS In Brief PARKING

TO DRIVE IS HUMAN, TO PARK IS DIVINE... Churches in the UK are making more than £20,000 each month, an average of £200 each, by renting out their empty car park spaces to motorists needing somewhere to park. The latest research by YourParkingSpace.co.uk also found that more than 100 churches are listed on the portal’s pre-booking parking website, where motorists can find more flexible, and alternative, options to on-street parking and traditional car parks. However, as there are some 16,000 registered churches this represents only a fraction of the total number who could be making a tidy additional income given that YourParkingSpace.co.uk estimates that over 85 per cent of churches have suitable parking spaces. One such church is St Wilfrid’s which spotted an opportunity to offer affordable parking, while attracting people to look around the church. Rebecca Oliver, said: “The parking income helps to support the running costs of the church, which as a Grade I listed building are significant. Harrison Woods, at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: “Churches offering their empty parking spaces makes perfect financial sense, you could almost describe it as ‘pray and display.’ n
