e’re not sure about you, but personally, for the Pride team, it’s been a very busy month. The Platinum Jubilee certainly kept us busy with local celebrations, as did last month’s Lincolnshire Show, back with all the traditional entertainment that makes it one of the most popular events in the calendar across the county, attracting over 60,000 people. But hot on the heels of the county show was another celebration, with friends and colleagues, to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of Pride Magazines. It was a chance to reflect on two decades of success and to remind ourselves what a wonderful team we all work alongside. Speaking of making a wonderful team, as you read this, our wonderful Sales Manager Cydney Buck will be out of the office – indeed, out of the country – marrying her fiancé, Charlie. They’re a smashing couple and we wish them all the best for a really happy life together! Our best wishes, for a great month!

Executive Editor robin@pridemagazines.co.uk

Our cover this month shows The Red Arrows flying above Scampton... enjoy our chat with Squadron Leader David Montenegro later in this edition as he publishes a brand new book all about the magnificent RAF display team. We’re always looking for scenes of Lincolnshire to feature on our covers and in the magazine. If you’re a budding photographer, email your pictures to the address above! 3

Great prospects for Boston’s future... MULTI-MILLION-POUND PROJECTS FOR BOSTON RECEIVE THE GO-AHEAD BOSTON Transformational multi-million-pound projects for Boston have been given the go-ahead by government. The confirmation means that Boston is set to get a bespoke learning centre for adults, and a redeveloped leisure complex. In addition, Boston train station will be refurbished. These projects have been given the green light after the Boston Town Deal Board submitted business cases to the government. The approval is part of the process for accessing the Towns Fund investment, which was announced for Boston 2021, with the agreement of a Town Deal worth £21.9m. Confirmation of the projects comes after government approval was given earlier this year to Boston for the release of

£2m in Town Deal funding for the Centre for Food and Fresh Produce Logistics and almost £4m for investment in town centre buildings. £802k was also confirmed

LINCOLNSHIRE Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) crews responded to 28 incidents over just three days last month, treating patients involved in incidents from road traffic collisions to stabbings. It follows a busy first half of the month which has seen the doctor-paramedic crews responding to, on average, six missions a day through June, compared with a usual average of four missions a day. Incidents included a house fire, plus medical and cardiac emergencies. 19 patients were treated at the scene with treatments including delivering

anaesthetic, blood transfusions and surgical interventions. 2022 is set to become the busiest year on record since the service began in 1994. The number of incidents attended are already 11% higher than the same time last year, which was LNAA’s busiest year to date. This increase is set to rise further as the service will have the ability to fly until 2am. LNAA receives no regular direct funding from the Government. It needs to raise £8 million this year to deliver its life-saving service every hour of the day. n

DECISION WILL DETERMINE FUTURE AFTER BUILDING HAS STOOD EMPTY FOR 20 YEARS

LINCOLN A new heritage space could be created in Lincoln’s Grayfriars building, which has been empty for more than 20 years. A meeting as Pride goes to press will determine whether the building will be converted into a café and heritage centre. Plans to be approved by the City of Lincoln’s planning committee will green-light the ground floor being occupied, a café being created and the

reinstatement of the main entrance on Free School Lane. Plans also include the creation of a two-storey extension to create a multi-use mezzanine space and the demolition of the Victorian extension. The building and its historic vaults were created in the 13th century and it currently has ‘at risk’ status. Previously the building has been a priory, mechanics’ institute and a wool factory as well as museum. n

New Premises for Tiffin & Co SHANNON RIGLIN’S PREMIUM CONFECTIONERY COMPANY HAS A NEW HOME IN SLEAFORD...

A new home for Nigel the puma in Friskney... SKEGNESS Steve Nichols, owner of Lincolnshire Wildlife Park at Friskney, was making plans for Nigel recently, creating the first ‘sensory environment’ for its ageing puma. Nigel is 10 years old and was rehomed at the park six year ago. With poor eyesight and as he’s on constant pain medication, Nigel’s needs are complex, but with specialist care he’s now enjoying a happy dotage in a brand new enclosure, designed around his needs. n

SLEAFORD The future is looking pretty sweet for Sleaford’s Tiffin & Co. The premium confectioner based near Sleaford was established by Shannon Riglin in 2000 and rapidly gained a number of stockists around the county. Shannon already sells her products from Pennells Garden Centre and via Gary Simpson’s Butchers shops, but now the baker’s new premises in Bristol Arcade, Sleaford, provides a larger premises for the production and sale of Tiffin & Co’s handmade cookies, blondies, brownies, and celebration cakes. Many items can be delivered anywhere in the UK. n See www.tiffinandcobakehouse.co.uk.

ANTIQUES & ART

COLIN YOUNG, TV AUCTIONEER

Auctioneer and valuer Colin Young brings the gavel down on about 70,000 lots each year, and hosts monthly sales across the region, assisting private clients to sell their items and helping others to curate their own collections of art, antiques and modern collectables... Everything has a value, but nothing we’ve come across is quite as valuable as Colin Young’s advice, especially when it comes to buying or selling art, antiques and modern collectables, something he’s been doing for nearly 35 years. Paying a visit to Colin’s sale rooms – the company has premises in Grantham, Bourne and Lincoln – is a real treat because you never know quite what you’re going to find... and for a keen browser, that’s a good thing, but the more focused buyer might want to be a little more meticulous and view each sale’s online catalogue first. Colin was born and raised in Thurlby near Bourne and began working at Bourne Auction Rooms from the age of 18. He quickly discovered he loved live in the sale room – perhaps for the same reasons his buyers do; you never know what you’re going to find – and spent three years there before moving to Goldings of Grantham, established back in 1900.

“There’s a thin line between an auctioneer and an anarchist,” he says. “It’s important to engage with the audience, make them feel the atmosphere and the excitement of the sale room.” “It’s a unique and fun place to be, and the more of a buzz there is, the more of an exciting atmosphere, the better the reflection on the business.”

Banging the

Hammer Colin and the team reckon they bring the hammer down on over 70,000 lots each year. The company hosts general or ‘collective’ sales in Grantham, Bourne and in Lincoln every month.

Working his way up in the company, and spending over five years of his career managing the sale room, Colin joined the business to form Golding Young in 1994, and the firm merged with Thomas Mawer & Son in 2010 to complete the firm’s nomenclature. In 2012, the company opened its Stamford office, and added Louth to its list of sale rooms in 2016. Naturally the past few years have presented difficulties for a type of business which has traditionally relied on filling the sale room with crowds of people. Fortunately we live in an age where, as well as people buying at a sale in person, there are simultaneous telephone and internet bids coming in life. During lockdown, Colin was able to host sales online, and made the best of the situation with good humour... people were also stuck at home and so in that sense, there was a captive audience out there. 16

However, nothing beats the pace and humour of the sales room, and that’s undoubtedly why Colin has been so successful over the past 33 years he’s been in the industry.

“After that, achieving good prices for the seller will take care of itself and buyers will enjoy the experience.” That’s not to say, though, that mere charisma will get you though life as an auctioneer. “It’s necessary to be technically brilliant,” Colin admits.

“After all, you’ve live bids, phone bids and internet-bids all coming in simultaneously, so you have to be aware of what’s going on and count forward.”

Nonetheless, in contrast to the idea that sale rooms are austere and only for antiques buffs, Colin is always happy when people discover the fun for the first time. “Some people are still intimidated by the auction room, by the myth that you’ll scratch your nose and buy a Rembrandt, but the reality is we’re here for both seller and buyer, and it’s in our interest to make the experience fun and lively and likable.” “The banter you can have, bringing people in, reading their body language and the humour are all part of the sale experience.” Colin now employs over 40 people. After all, in addition to hosting the sales, there’s stock to pick up, assess, deliver to buyers and catalogues to compile. >>

Buying at an Auction House... Facts & Figures

n Do it! Purchasing at an auction is a fun – it’s rather addictive in fact – and your prospective purchase will have been assessed by an expert beforehand. n Research the sale beforehand, and view your prospective purchases noting the lot number. Set a budget – perhaps with a contingency – for larger purchases, and take along a print out of the auction catalogue, proof of ID and address and the ability to make payment which is always due on sale day. n You can make an Absentee (Commission) bid prior to the sale if you can’t be there in person, or a bid via telephone or online, live. Auction houses like Golding Young Mawer can deliver items to you, after the sale, too.

ANTIQUES & ART

COLIN YOUNG, TV AUCTIONEER

>> He’s proud of the team and how they adapted to life under lockdown, but one particular member of staff stood out. “Kirsty, my daughter, has been working here for 10 years, having come along for work experience and finding herself instantly hooked on the buzz of the sales room environment.” “She’s completed her junior exams and she’s absolutely flourished. Her decision making is always absolutely spot on, and when the going gets tough – as it did when we were going into lockdown – she really is tough and she gets on with it.” Colin even concedes that her jokes and banter as the gavel comes down are as good as his, which is good news for the seller and buyer. “Getting stock is the easy bit,” says Colin. “Private individuals, liquidations of businesses, estate clearances… it’s a real misconception that you have to send off a huge amount to the auction room.” “In fact, many of our lots are single items, and we’re always happy to visit those who are downsizing from large properties or redesigning their homes and want to have a single item or just a couple of bits valued for sale; we’re always happy to advise.” The company sells around 70,000 lots each year and undertakes about 8,500 vendor consignments annually, with monthly collective sales as well as specialist sales for fine art, Asian arts and ceramics, even September’s toy, transport and automobilia sale. Technology has also brought online auction sites. Has that damaged the industry? No, says Colin. In fact, it’s separated the wheat from the chaff and proven that services of proper auction houses are more reliable than ever. “You can pay a commission to online sites, and do all the work yourself,” says Colin. “Or you can pay us to do all the work; collect the item, photograph it, catalogue it, process the sale, publicise it and collect the funds with the security of RICS regulation.” “The public realise that it makes sense to entrust items to professionals, especially when they’re seeking a

professional valuation for an item, or when dealing with specialist items. Colin’s successes include a cello which sold to a Canadian collector for £11,000, a sideboard which sold for a cool £135,000 and a James Campbell painting which was sold to the Tate Modern Gallery for £15,000. The firm’s antiques and fine art department has valued about £40,000,000 of items over the past five years or so. Valuation in particular is tricky, but if you’ve only chance to achieve a good price for your item, and as Colin represents both buyer and seller, you’re in much safer hands with a professional... and as a buyer, you can access a wider range an a higher quality of stock, meaning a better experience, and of course, the chance to enjoy Colin’s banter, or if you’re really fortunate, Kirsty’s! n

Colin Young has 33 years experience as an auctioneer based at Golding Young, established in 1864. The company has sale rooms in Bourne, Grantham and Lincoln, and offices in Stamford and Louth. For no-obligation advice, valuations and to view catalogues of future sales online, see www.goldingyoung.com or call 01778 422686.

LINCOLNSHIRE’S ANTIQUES TOWN

“NOBODY IS ACTUALLY SURE WHY,” says Lawrence Shaw, who has been based in the town of Horncastle since the late 1970s. “Horncastle has always just been a centre for antiques, perhaps because there have always been one or two larger dealers in the town which have in turn encouraged other dealers to establish themselves.” “It’s a sort of safety in numbers thing. The town is large enough for each dealer to specialise in their own particular type of antiques, and we all work together to make the town a go-to destination. “We’re proud that the keen antiques trading community brings people into the town and that we then provide business for the restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and so on. Coach trips are common, as are international buyers, especially from the Far East.” “It’s changing all the time but there are about half a dozen independent shops and four large centres which host individual dealers in their premises. I’d say there are over 100 dealers across the town at least!” n 20

How To Buy

Antiques... n Today, used term antiques is used interchangeably with vintage or collectable items. Some dealers of antiques use the ‘100 years old’ rule to determine what they consider differentiates an antique (over a century old) from vintage and collectable items... though no absolute definition exists. n Age, rarity, quality, historical significance and current tastes all effect value, but no factor is more important than how abundant an item is. Following the rule of supply and demand, the rarer, more specific or more difficult to obtain something is, the greater its value. n One thing that almost all experts do agree on is that you should only ever buy items that you love, not simply on the expectation of their appreciation in value. Fashions come and go, but if you purchase something you enjoy owning there’s always a good justification for its purchase. n TV programmes teach you to haggle... but antiques dealers need to make a living, and one local dealer told us that their pet peeve is overzealous customers making outrageously low offers... a sure-fire way of not securing the piece you have your eye on!

ANTIQUES & ART HEMSWELL ANTIQUE CENTRE

HEMSWELL ANTIQUES CENTRES... 250,000 people every year visit Europe’s largest antiques centres, between Lincoln and Scunthorpe It was one of the most venerable RAF bases in the county, founded pre-RAF as RFC Harpswell, in 1916. The site came to be known as RAF Hemswell in 1936 and would continue to function as an active base until 1967. In years gone by, it was home to many of Bomber County’s squadrons, and it also hosted the film crews creating 1955’s Dambusters film. But today it’s home to heritage in a completely different context. With over 68,000 square feet of space, Hemswell is Europe’s largest Antiques Centre, and is visited by a whopping 250,000 people every year. With 266 floor pitches and 388 cabinets, its owners reckon that there’s in excess of 1,000,000 items from over 400 antiques dealers to browse through. Expanding from its initial opening in 1986, with buildings 1, 2 and 3 opening in 2005 and The Guardroom in 2014, the centre now has datelined buildings, as well as a dedicated space specialising in vintage – as opposed to antique – 20th century and upcycled items. Hemswell Antiques Centres is open seven days as week and if you’re lucky, you’re also likely to see one of TV’s antiques show such as Bargain Hunt filming at Hemswell too! n Find out more: Hemswell Antique Centres is open seven days a week at Hemswell Cliff, DN21 5TJ. THE VILLAGE: BELTON & MANTHORPE

History near Grantham in the villages of

BELTON & MANTHORPE Two communities working together as a single parish, there’s a great deal of history in Belton and Manthorpe, not least among which is the village’s role in the abdication crisis of 1937... Words & Images: Rob Davis. This page: Belton House and its grounds.

THE VILLAGE: BELTON & MANTHORPE

“Fewer than 530 people live in the parish and there are just 30 houses in the centre of Belton, with many properties owned by the National Trust...” SO DINKY are the two communities of Belton and Manthorpe that only together do the two villages, about two miles from the centre of Grantham, make up a parish. In 2011 the census recorded that just under 530 people lived in the parish, and that there are about 192 houses in the two villages. The National Trust owns a number of the houses in the centre of Belton, including The Old School Village Hall, which it refurbished in 2013, and is now used for meetings of the Parish Council. Of course, the most prominent building in the area in the custodianship of the charity is the village’s Belton House. The Domesday Book records a settlement around the village church, original parts of which date back to the 1300s. History is sketchy so far back, but it’s known that the Porter family and Pakenham family were prominent landowners and that in 1617, Sir Henry Pakenham hosted King James VI at his manor nearby to the present site of Belton House. Pakenham sold the Manor of Belton to Sir John Brownlow two years later in 1619. Richard Brownlow was granted arms in 1593 and his son – the original Sir John Brownlow – was the first Baronet of Belton in England. It was (old) Sir John’s son, born in 1659 and (helpfully) also called (young) Sir John, who built the current Belton House. Nice and clear? Young John married his cousin Alice Sherary in 1676 the two lovebirds at 19-years old had an income of £9,000/year in addition to a lump sum of £20,000 – about £3m today – and decided to supplement their Bloomsbury pad with a country house in Belton. Work began in 1685 creating a Carolean or restoration property with William Winde commissioned to create the house. >> Above: The door and inscription of The Old School: ‘real wisdom is beyond this sign.’ The village’s drinking fountain’s inscription informs that you’re 23 miles from Lincoln, 122 miles from London.

As part of their agreement with the National Trust following their 1984 handover of Belton House, the Brownlow family retains private apartments within the house...

>> Belton House was completed in 1688 and its 14 hectares of grounds are set within a total estate of 516 hectares. The estate later expanded to a rather sizable 1,000 acres with over 30,000 trees planted across the estate. Belton House was requisitioned during both World Wars, first as a home for the 11th (Northern) Division prior to their departure for Gallipoli in 1915 and later as the headquarters of the Machine Gun Corps until 1922. The parkland became RAF Belton Park and was home to the RAF Regiment from 1942 to 1946, whereupon the regiment was redeployed to Catterick. During the inter-war year, Belton was also at the centre of another conflict too. In 1936, Peregrine ‘Perry’ Brownlow, 6th Baron Brownlow, had just finished his tenure as Mayor of Grantham and was serving as Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. A close friend and equerry of the monarch, it’s believed that Perry counselled the monarch

through the abdication crisis and even took Wallis Simpson to Cannes to evade public attention – apparently trying to dissuade the American divorcee from pursuing her relationship and advising that she renounce the idea of marriage. Perry Brownlow refused to attend the couple’s marriage in 1937 and eventually extricated himself from the former King’s circle. The current older of the title Baron Brownlow is Peregrine Edward Quintin Cust, who is 47 year of age and married Vanessa Threapleton-Horrocks in 2010. As part of their agreement with the National Trust following their 1984 handover of Belton House, its grounds and its contents to the organisation, the family still retains a private apartment within the house. The village of Belton itself comprises 31 houses, and is bisected by the A607. On the other side of the road is Belton Garden Centre, on the site of what was the walled garden of Belton House. >>

Above: The Old School House and St Peter & St Paul Church, the tower of which dates back to about 1200, with a chancel created in the early C18th.

>> The centre was created in the 1800s and the walls of the garden were 16ft high, but created with hollow interiors to retain warmth and provide the gardens with their own microclimate. The site is owned by the Elkington family and it covers about 50,000 square metres.

On the edge of Manthorpe is Queen Elizabeth Park, which opened in 1980 for the Queen Mother for her 80th birthday.... Above: Chandlers is one of the most established agricultural and groundscare businesses – and motor dealerships – in the county.

32

Also family owned is nearby Chandlers, which began life as an ironmonger’s shop on Grantham’s Westgate back in 1935. Two schoolfriends – including Joe Pell – joined Desmond Chandler and branched into farm machinery, boasting that the company sells ‘everything from a tin tack to a tractor.’ The company moved to Belton in 1964, and established depots at Horncastle and Lincoln, branching into vehicles sales for brands like Land Rover, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Isuzu. Today the company is one of just 23 partners in the country to sell the new Ineos Grenadier, a hard-working 4x4 for professionals.

Chandlers is now run by a team including Managing Director Gavin Pell, and Howard Pell as Chairman. Belton’s Church of St Peter & St Paul has a west tower which dated back to about 1230, and otherwise was rebuilt around 1638. The tower’s oldest bells date back to 1590 but the most recent ones are the rather younger tenor and treble bells, cast in 1872. A memorial chapel was also created in 1818 and appearing in the chapel as demi-figures are Richard Brownlow C17; Sir John & Lady Alicia Brownlow 1679; Sir John Cust 1770, Sir Brownlow Cust 1807 and Sophie, Lady Brownlow 1818. And finally, located on the edge of Manthorpe is Queen Elizabeth Park. Formerly grazing land, the site was purchased by the two parishes of Belton & Manthorpe and Little Gonerby & Harrowby in 1979, opening in 1980 for the Queen Mother upon her 80th birthday. n

THE RED ARROWS

Precision flying with the

RED ARROWS This month we’re celebrating arguably the world’s most recognisable flying squadron, as Wing Commander David Montenegro releases his new book celebrating the Red Arrows... Words: Rob Davis. Images: Penguin, Defence Imagery/MOD.

coloured red, and only worn once Public Display Authority has been granted.

“It’s you and me now!” our pilot murmurs. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a Red Arrows pilot climbs into the cockpit of their Hawk T1 jet, a new book on the world famous squadron, written by the Squadron’s Officer Commanding, David Montenegro, will ensure you’re as intimately acquainted as possible with the thrills and responsibility of the role of a pilot. We caught up with David not just upon the launch of his book, but just after the team completed their flypast of Buckingham Palace following HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – these are the guys who caused poor little Prince Louis to cover his ears – and the timing of the squadron’s arrival over the Palace was planned not just to within 30 seconds, or even 10 seconds… not even to five seconds. The timing of the appearance was accurate to plus or minus two seconds. Being in the right place at the right time depends on a ‘check-in’ time being specified during a display briefing with Red 1. Despite the otherwise good-humoured nature of the team these are very to the point in nature, with no superfluous information or chit-chat. When Red 1 specifies the time of ‘Red Check’ that exact moment must correlate with a minute-by-minute schedule known as WHAM (What Happens According to Management [Team Manager]). One of the greatest crimes as a pilot of the Red Arrows is to be late for ‘Red Check.’ The squadron has nine display pilots, numbered Red 1 to Red 9. There’s a Red 10 too, who serves as a flying ‘supervisor,’ a commentator who flies a photographer. Red 11 is the Officer Commanding. But behind the pilots themselves is about 120 other team members, not least among which are ‘Circus,’ who are assigned to a specific pilot, 34

David reckons the putting on of the uniform is a ritual which prompts a mind-shift, preparing a pilot mentally and physically for the flight. Next, pilots walk to the engineering desk and collect their F700 folder. A pilot usually has ‘their own’ aircraft, but a spare Hawk – a sort of courtesy car – is also available. flown to and from display airfields and who help to service the aircraft between displays. Then, there’s the ‘Blues.’ The Circus are drawn from members of the Blues – the name for the Red Arrows’ ground support team. They include mechanical, avionics, survival equipment and other technical specialists, as well as public relations experts, photographers, drivers, logisticians and operations staff. Other Blues members are part of the dye team, too, and load the smoke pods with the three colours of diesel oil/dye mix which is mixed into the 400°c exhaust vapour from the aircraft’s engine when Red 1 gives the command ‘Smoke on, go.’ Following the pilots’ briefing – and a comfort break – the pilots get their kit on, from an individually fitted helmet with double visors and an internal headset for communication, to Hawk Swift flying boots, designed specifically for use with the Hawk aircraft. The crew also have anti-G trousers with leg restraints which restrain the pilots in the event of ejection, plus leather gloves to improve grip and the fire-retardant coverall, Right: David is the only person in the history of the squadron to have been a display pilot, leader or ‘Red 1’ and Officer Commanding.

Each aircraft, David reckons, has a slight nuance in the way it responds and so pilots prefer to use their own Hawk. In any case, it’s the pilot’s responsibility to ‘sign out’ his or her Hawk, once they’re happy it is full of fuel, dye, oxygen and is serviceable and safe to fly. This is a legal requirement and in doing so, responsibility passes from engineer to pilot. David say that the adrenaline begins to build once pilots make their way to the aircraft. They walk around the jet, checking its physical components and beyond a mobile electrical unit giving it power – generating a relatively quiet thrum – there’s little noise at this time, the aircraft is inert, with perhaps just the odd smell of aviation fuel. Pilots, says David, also have a much more intimate connection with their Hawk T1 than modern fighters. It’s a smaller cockpit, more visceral and mechanical in terms of the connection between pilot and the aircraft than the fly-by-wire technology of aircraft like the Typhoon. Putting on their helmet, the pilot connects their umbilical cords; oxygen, anti-G protection, and microphone, then strap their legs into the restraints before putting the main straps on their legs and shoulders. This is the ‘it’s now me and you’ moment. >>

THE RED ARROWS

>> Internal batteries are switched on. The emergency warning panel gives a few welcome beeps by way of a system check and the ‘left to right’ check of instrumentation begins. Next, switching on the radios, navigation and systems to ready the jet engine for startup. Thumb over the ‘transmit’ button, ready, Red 1 calls ‘Red Check’ right on time and each pilot responds ‘two, three,’ in consecutive order. ‘Check-in’ is complete. Red 1 calls for ‘engine start’ and taxis out, with each subsequent pilot bringing to life their Rolls Royce Turbomeca Adour Mk861 turbo fan engine with their 5,700lb of thrust. The pilots are divided into ‘Enid’ – Red 1 to Red 5 – and ‘Hanna’ which is the rear half of the formation – Reds 6 to 9. The team will fly UK transits at between 5,000ft and 2,000ft above ground, for international transits, they fly at a more fuelefficient 20,000ft. Depending on weather displays are flown at between 300ft and 500ft, but aircraft fly as low as 1,000ft. There are a number of manoeuvres the team performs, from routines involving

36

loops and rolls to ‘flat displays,’ when poor weather means an envelope of only 1,000ft or so or sky to work within. Completed in two halves, the first part of the display lasts about nine minutes and the second half is about 10 minutes in duration. Still working to the minute-by-minute breakdown of WHAM, the team heads off home. David – known as Monty – is uniquely placed to talk about the Red Arrows, as the only person in the history of the squadron to have been a display pilot, leader or ‘Red 1’ and Officer Commanding. David joined the RAF in 1999 having attended the University of Manchester to study Politics & Theology, and whilst there he was also part of the Manchester & Salford Aviation Squadron. Having flown the Tornado and served as a flying instructor on the Hawk T1, he joined The Red Arrows in 2009 and spent three year with the squadron – a standard post – during The Red Arrows performed their first which he served as Synchro display on 9th May 1965, making their debut as an amalgamation of Leader. >>

the Red Pelicans, Black Arrows and Yellowjacks. Since then the team has performed more than 4,800 displays.

Tried & Trusted by the Royal Air Force: The Hawk T1 Jet...

The Hawk T1 jet is best known as the aircraft of choice for The Red Arrows, its successor the T2 is used to train pilots at RAF Valley n The Red Arrows was formed in in 1964 as an amalgamation of Red Pelicans, Black Arrows and Yellowjacks before the first display season in 1965. n Upon their formation the squadron was already flying the Gnat T1 and continued to use it as their preferred display aircraft. n Around the same time, the RAF approached Hawker Siddeley Aviation (HSA) with a view to replacing it. The Hawk was first flown in 1974 as the Hawker Siddeley Hawk, and was later produced by the company’s successor organisations, British Aerospace and BAE Systems.

n A Hawk’s wingspan is 9.39m, and the aircraft is 11.85m long and 4m high. n They’re powered by a single Rolls Royce Turbomeca Adour Mk861 turbofan which produces 5,200lbs of thrust.

n A Hawk has two fuel tanks – one in the wing, one in the fuselage. Total fuel capacity is 1,659 litres, so assuming a petrol price of 195p/litre at your local forecourt, that means a bill of £3,235 per fill up!

n Top speed is 645mph, of Mach 1.2. The aircraft weighs 8,000lbs and can fly at up to 48,000ft. It range is 2,520 km.

n A T1 jet costs around £20m. A T2 version is available. It’s a bit longer at 12.4m.

n The Hawk today remains a two-seater jet used for advanced pilot training and as the Red Arrows’ display aircraft of choice.

THE RED ARROWS

>> After three years with the Red Arrows, David completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan and then as a special projects officer with the US Marines, before returning to Lincolnshire to serve as team leader, Red 1 and then with Typhoon Force Headquarters at RAF Coningsby. 2022 will be the third year service as Officer Commanding for the Red Arrows, ensuring overall safety for each of the 130 people in the squadron completing about 65 displays each year. In total it’s thought that the Red Arrows have completed over 4,800 displays in 57 countries. But flying isn’t without risk. Quite aside from the professionalism of the pilots and the diligence of the Blues who maintain the aircraft, incidences like bird strikes can’t be foreseen, only mitigated to the point where risks are ‘ALARP’ (as low as reasonably practical). In its 58 years, the Red Arrows have lost 10 pilots (including four at RAF Kemble, 1971) and one engineer. Flt Lt Jon Egging flew at Red 4 and in August 2011, lost his life when he crashed into open fields following completion of a display at Bournemouth. The team knew Jon had crashed but didn’t know whether he was alive or dead. 38

An inquiry found no fault with Jon – David says he was an exceptional pilot – nor any problems with the aircraft. The likely cause was ‘A-loc’ (the term for an almost loss of consciousness). The loss of Jon and of Sean Cunningham in November 2011 are a sobering reminder that despite the professionalism of the squadron, flying at up to 645mph with as little as 8ft-10ft between aircraft is still incredibly risky. And yet, being a Red Arrows pilot is still considered one of the best jobs in the world. During his time, David recalls MasterChef filming at Scampton on 2014 and visits from Blue Peter, and by everyone from David Jason to Tim Peake. And of course, the squadron can count royalty among their biggest fans – not withstanding Prince Louis’ distaste for the noise of a Hawk. The Duke of Cambridge visited the squadron in 2008 after receiving his wings at RAF Cranwell, and again in 2016 at RAF Fairford. Prince George was about the same

Above/Right: In formation over Lincolnshire and London. Right: Tim Peake was a special guest for the squadron in 2019.

age as David’s son and was a little shy, until he asked if he could sit in the cockpit. “Entirely safe as the whole thing was, it was still slightly unnerving to know that the third in line to the throne was sitting upon multiple rockets and explosives embedded within the ejection seat,” says David. “The Duke was, of course, familiar with the layout of the cockpit. He and I talked the young Prince through it and after Prince George got a little excited and put his hand on one of the instrument panels, His Royal Highness lifted his son out really carefully… my heartbeat then went from the 160bpm it had suddenly shot up to, back down to around 60bpm!” David’s legacy – as well as preventing the future heir to the throne from taking off for a pleasure flight – is an official and entirely comprehensive story of the squadron, its history and what it’s like to actually fly the aircraft with the squadron. “Occasionally you and the team come so close to perfection up there in the rarefied air of the skies,” says David, summing up as succinctly as possible what life as a Red Arrows pilot is really like. “You never know when those moments will come, but they do. And it’s what you yearn for as a pilot.” n

Red Arrows: The squadron’s first official story...

The Red Arrows represents the very best speed, agility and precision aerobatic flying skill in the Royal Air Force, and the people who wear those iconic red flight suits are rigorously selected not just for their flying skills, lightning-fast reflexes and nerves of steel, but for their mental resilience, courage and humility. THE 2022 LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

The 2022 Lincolnshire Show

WELCOME BACK! Thousands of visitors descended on the Lincolnshire Showground last month as it welcomed back one of the county’s most beloved events - the Lincolnshire Show, making its highly anticipated return after the pandemic...

Taking place under clear blue skies and lots of sun, the Show made its 137th outing, with the two-day event seeing more than 55,000 people through the gates to enjoy the very best Lincolnshire has to offer – which is 3,500 more people than the last in-person Lincolnshire Show in 2019. Jayne Southall, CEO of the Lincolnshire Showground, said: “It’s hard to express how overjoyed we are that the Show is finally back – it’s been a long three years since we’ve been able to welcome people to the Showground in such a style. The atmosphere on site has been palpable – and defi-

nitely boosted by the fantastic weather – so to welcome a much higher level of visitors than our last show has been the cherry on the cake. The Lincolnshire Show remains such a significant event for the county and is something we will always be proud of.” “A huge thank you to the whole team and the hundreds of traders, performers and stewards who helped make this year’s return event such a joyous and unforgettable experience for everyone involved.” A whole host of old favourites and brand-new exhibitors provided hours of entertainment, including the thrilling Atkinson Action

Words: Rob Davis.

horses, which treated guests to high-energy performances across both days. Meanwhile, the agricultural community came together for traditional livestock competitions, and one of the Show’s youngest exhibitors to date – ten-year-old Farmer Joe – spent time sharing his top farming tips with visitors. Livestock competition results are available on the Lincolnshire Show website. Over in the Education Zone, the Show also hosted its Schools Challenge, an initiative that engaged with more than 30 regional primary schools. Rural and inner-city schools took part to be crowned the challenge champions, aiming to educate young people about agricultural society, farming and food production.

This year’s Lincolnshire Show was dedicated to extending the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, taking on a royal purple theme throughout the Showground. Local schools got involved with the royal celebrations, with pupils entering their best royal rhyme to be judged by renowned Hollywood actor Colin McFarlane, who grew up in Lincoln. As well as exploring the county’s rich heritage, visitors were spoilt for choice with hundreds of trade stands selling everything from shoes and cards to handmade jewellery and clothes. Foodies enjoyed a range of cookery demonstrations in the Lincolnshire Kitchen from top chefs, as well as a huge selection of food and drink outlets including a vast array of street food and ingredients for

dinner - including locally produced meat and cheeses, jams, chutneys and local ales. Jayne added: “As well as the higher visitor numbers, we also saw a huge increase in presale tickets, driven by changes in how people plan events in advance post-pandemic. On the first day of the show, we welcomed more than 10,500 cars to our car parks, which is more than a third higher than previous years.” “Summing up in just a couple of words, the show this year has been a huge success and celebration. The feedback we’ve had from visitors and exhibitors has been astounding. This excitement has been fantastic to see, and we can't wait to welcome back existing and new exhibitors next year!” n

2023’s Event: Lincolnshire Show 2023 is set for 21 and 22 June next year. For more information on next year’s event, please visit www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk.

EXPLORING LINCOLNSHIRE’S

Abbeys & Monasteries Image: Crowland Abbey.

ABBEYS & MONASTERIES

From peaceful and pious places of reverence to deserted and destroyed sites consigned to history by an aggrieved monarch. We this month explore the religious sites which managed to escape Henry VIII’s papal vendetta... IT’S DIFFICULT TO CONTEMPLATE that a place where monks live pious lives of peace and prayer could be torn apart by Henry VIII, an aggrieved monarch seeking to completely destroy their way Religious of life. In the 15th century over 880 such religious houses existed in England & Wales.

The ruins of Tupholme Abbey, operational between about 1160 and 1536.

Orders

In The 1530s remaining parts date back to Norman times. There have been three abbeys and a church all built on the same site. A monastery of the Benedictine Order, Crowland Abbey was founded in memory of St Guthlac in the early eighth century by Ethelbald, King of Mercia then destroyed – its community slaughtered – by the Danes in 866.

There were nearly 900 religious houses in England, around 260 for monks, 300 for regular canons, 142 nunneries and 183 friaries; some 12,000 people in total, 4,000 monks, 3,000 canons, 3,000 friars and 2,000 nuns.

However in 1536, two years after establishing the Church of England, and by extension ending papal supremacy, Henry VIII began to embark on the Dissolution of the Monasteries, sometimes referred to as The Suppression. Abbeys, priories and friaries all suffered the tyranny of the monarch, his wrath expressed in March 1536 as an Act of Parliament forcing any monastery with an income of less than £200 a year to be dissolved and their property passed to the Crown; 300 religious houses fell within this category.

Beyond wanting to annul his marriage and remarry, the monarch feared the religious houses would remain loyal to the Pope. By the mid-1530s Henry had also spent a great deal of his inheritance. Monasteries were among the wealthiest institutions in England which meant a rather convenient windfall. Over the centuries there have been over 100 monastic houses in Lincolnshire. Ten remain as earthworks, with a further ten sites remaining in ecclesiastical service. Crowland Abbey…

Of Lincolnshire’s remaining abbeys, Crowland Abbey is the most complete and in our opinion, the most beautiful. An abbey has stood on the site since 716 and some

Refounded in the reign of King Edred, some of the original stone still remains to this day, but the third and fourth abbeys

were perpendicular buildings and are what we see today. Thornton Abbey...

Thornton Abbey was one of Britain’s richest Augustinian abbeys and demonstrates impressive architecture. The abbey’s rather enormous fortified gatehouse is perhaps the finest preserved in England. It managed to survive the Suppression of the Monasteries by becoming a secular college, until it was closed in 1547. A house was then constructed behind the gatehouse in the 17th century but sadly it was either dismantled or never completed. >>

Monastic Orders in Lincolnshire

Religious orders are either more ‘contemplative’ (allotting more time to prayer) or ‘active’ (serving the community) in nature... n Augustinian: Mendicant order following more spiritual order and exploring Benedictine teachings.

n Franciscan: Active mendicant order following a life of extreme austerity, typically living off charity.

n Benedictine: One of the oldest orders, usually more contemplative, the first to live in cenobitic monasticism rather than hermitage.

n Gilbertine: Established in 1130 in Lincolnshire’s Sempringham. Based on the Cistercian order but mixed gender, incorporating contemplative nuns.

n Cistercian: Offshoot of the Benedictine order, which sought a more literal application of the Benedictine rule.

n Knights Templar: Followed the Cistercian order but with militaristic intent, typically during the Crusades.

>> English Heritage is the current custodian, visitors are welcome from Thursday to Sunday, 10am-6pm.

Land Ownership Prior to the dissolution of the monasteries, the various orders owned 2,000,000 acres – over 16% of England, with tens of thousands of tenant farmers working those lands.

Tupholme Abbey...

Tupholme Abbey was a Premonstratensian abbey close to Lincoln. The area of the Witham Valley is now is home to the survival of nine monastic abbeys built in the early medieval period. The standing remains of the original monastic buildings can be viewed in addition to the archaeological remains below ground. The Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire purchased the site in 1988 and is preserving this monument for the future. St Leonard’s Priory...

St Leonard’s Priory On the edge of Stamford was supposedly built on the site on a monastery which was founded by St Wilfrid 50

in 657 and destroyed in the Danish invasion. It was jointly refounded by William the Conqueror and the Bishop of Durham in 1082 and remained a cell of Durham until its dissolution in 1538. Part of the west front and north arcade of the church survived which are the ruins you can see today. The site of St Leonard’s Priory is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the structure is a Grade I listed building. Haverholme Priory...

Haverholme Priory near Anwick was founded in 1139 and was home to the only English order of the mixed Cistercian monks or ‘Gilbertines.’ Bourne Abbey...

Bourne Abbey was home to the Arrouasian branch of the Augustinian Order. Augustinians were unique in building their monastic buildings to the north of their abbey and

they provided one of their number to be the parish priest to minister to the needs of the parish. This would explain why the Abbey was not demolished after 1536, when it was dissolved on the order of King Henry VIII. Although the monastic buildings were largely taken down, the nave of the abbey remained virtually untouched, and became the parish church of Bourne with a secular priest taking over the duties from his Augustinian predecessor. Revesby Abbey...

Revesby Abbey was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1142 by William de Rounare Earl of Lincoln. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the abbey was demolished and a country house built. The country house exchanged ownership various times and in 1999 the abbey was bought by the current owners who are now restoring the site. n

DINING OUT AT BELVOIR CASTLE’S ENGINE YARD

AFTERNOON TEA & MORE at

THE ENGINE YARD It’s perfect for summer! Delicious dining with friends and a great day out at the stylish Engine Yard village adjacent to Belvoir Castle. Created by Her Grace the Duchess of Rutland with a £2.5m investment, and opening in 2018, the site has become better and better with every addition, and its latest feature is The Duchess’s Parlour, offering afternoon tea and Champagne... SO SUNNY & WARM! It was the perfect day to enjoy a visit to The Engine Yard, the flagship lifestyle and retail development adjacent to Belvoir Castle, which opened in 2018. It marked an investment of £2.5m, in a site formerly occupied by the 20-ton beam engine which supplied the 450ft Grade I listed castle, built in 1799, with water. Today, the development is home to 15 businesses, many independently owned, mostly focusing on food or luxury products for the home and garden. If you’re stuck for something to do on a sunny Sunday morning, it’s ideal for an impromptu day out, and as well as being able to browse its range of retailers, you won’t be stuck for somewhere to dine. At the heart of the Engine Yard development is the Fuel Tank, which now offers a range of artisan sandwiches, salads and homemade cakes. Outside the Fuel Tank is the undercover terrace, sheltered from the breeze and with its own stonebaked pizzeria and bar. Another brand new development is Vale House, which was recently converted into a boutique guest house with six rooms individually designed by The Duchess herself,

designed to offer a premium experience for those seeking an overnight stay in the Vale of Belvoir. On the ground floor of Vale House, though, is the Duchess’s new tea parlour with bright, kitsch floral design and a menu of superb summer salads and afternoon teas. A choice of four summer salads include a smoked chicken, bacon and avocado dish, plus a superfood dish with red quinoa and fresh peas; a heritage beetroot salad with pomegranate, mango and mint salsa, and a tuna salad with ponzu sauce and avocado. For a real sense of luxury, The Duchess’s Parlour provides Champagne for two with Nyetimber English sparkling wine, or sparkling rosé, and options including a blinis with caviar and sparkling wine or Belvoir estate gin, and canapés including Cropwell Bishop Stilton bon bon with seared fillet of beef, or crab tartlette with Gruyère. A tiered afternoon tea is available in the Duchess’s Parlour too, with a selection of finger sandwiches, scones and ‘dainty treats’ created by the Parlour’s patisserie chefs. Ingredients are sourced from across the estate and there are vegetarian and vegan options available too. >>

THE ENGINE YARD AT BELVOIR CASTLE

>> Elsewhere on the estate, the Engine Yard’s Balloon Bar is a stylish and quirky basement gin bar with cocktails and mocktails. “The whole team have worked hard to create an enjoyable place to spend an entire summer day, and there’s nothing better than when the sun is shining and visitors are just enjoying the whole of the Engine Yard, going from retailer to retailer and then just stopping for a drink,” says the Duchesss. “We’re exceptionally proud, too, of our different independent retailers, each of which can help you to take a little of the

Engine Yard experience home. A Sunday morning isn’t complete without a cup of coffee with freshly ground Fuel Tank Blend beans from Cherizina, and for Sunday lunch our butcher The Country Victualler provides locally-sourced meats, pies and patés. Cocoa Amore specialises in sustainably-sourced chocolate, and Jorge Artisan Food is the home of stunning bread, cheese, antipasti and other delicious food.” With delicious food and drink, lots to see and do, plus a range of new afternoon tea options at The Duchess’s Parlour, this summer promises to be very enjoyable indeed! n

Belvoir Castle’s Engine Yard development provides food and drink at The Fuel Tank, cocktails and mocktails at The Balloon Bar, afternoon teas and Champagne at The Duchess’s Parlour, and the site has 15 retailers including those specialising in food and drink, as well as The Idle Mole garden centre, Duchess’s Gallery boutique and Margo & Plum interiors. In the KITCHEN Fragrant and delicious, this orientally-inspired dish is simple and flavoursome... great for summer afternoons!

CHICKEN WITH PINK GRAPEFRUIT & LEMONGRASS Preparation Time: 15 minutes + Marinating. Cooking Time: 55 minutes. Serves: Four. 4 lemongrass stalks • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 pink grapefruit, zest and juice • 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tbsp reduced salt soy sauce • 1 1⁄2 tbsp maple syrup • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 4 British chicken legs 300g Tenderstem broccoli, trimmed and thicker stems halved lengthways 2 x 250g packs microwaveable Thai black rice 4 salad onions, finely chopped • 25g coriander, roughly chopped Finely chop two lemongrass stalks and mix in a large baking dish with the garlic, grapefruit zest and juice, fish and soy sauces, maple syrup and oil. Slash each chicken leg three times and add to the dish, turning in the marinade. Leave for at least 20 minutes, but ideally up to 12 hours (cover and chill in the fridge, regularly turning the chicken in the marinade). Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Bash the remaining 2 lemongrass stalks and add to the baking dish. Turn the chicken skin-side up and roast for 45 minutes, basting the legs in the juices halfway, until fully cooked, the juices run clear and there is no pink meat. Meanwhile, put the broccoli in a large bowl and cover with just-boiled water from the kettle; leave for 5 minutes, then drain. Lift the chicken from the dish and rest on a plate. Stir the rice and broccoli into the baking dish to soak up all the juices and return to the oven for 6-8 minutes until the rice is piping hot. Remove the dish from the oven, discard the whole lemongrass stalks and stir the salad onions and coriander through the rice. Divide between plates and top with the chicken to serve. n Thousands of recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes.

Opening with citrus brightness, moving into a floral, tannin rich body with notes of chamomile, rose and honeysuckle, finishing with earthy, smokey, peppery notes and a nip of the sea. Treat Wild Eve just like a spirit and serve with a twist of pink grapefruit!

The Wine Cellar FROM A TRIO OF WINES TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PINOT NOIR DAY, TO A DARK FRUITY WHISKY FROM THE ISLES AND A NONALCOHOLIC OPTION, WE PRESENT THIS MONTH’S TIPPLES... 2. No.1 Côte de Beaune is a red Burgundy exclusive to retailer Waitrose. Medium bodied with good structure and some fine-grained tannins, it’s a versatile match with food and especially delicious with cheese, £33.99 / 75cl / 13% ABV.

3. Organic Vosne-Romanée Jean Féry is an elegant wine from a small family winery in the heart of Burgundy. Soft, strawberry aromas, summer fruits and vanilla notes, £55 / 75cl / 13% ABV.

For a number of years now, Prosecco has been a very fashionable wine, the drinks industry’s golden goose. August 13th is National Prosecco Day – a proper religious holiday, definitely not a contrived marketing exercise – which celebrates wines like our chosen example, an elegant wine from a top single estate vineyard in the Province of Treviso, with its hints of apple, peach and rose petals. This is Prosecco at its best; great with appetisers and shellfish pasta dishes. n Available at waitrose cellar.com.

AROUND THE TIME that this magazine appears in shops, many will be enthusiastically heading off to Worthy Farm for Glastonbury. Meanwhile, Anna and Ben Haines will be hosting their own miniGlastonbury, which has become an annual event for the couple, their two boys and assorted family and friends. “It’s become a bit of a tradition,” says Anna. “Ben grew up in Switzerland, I’ve lived in Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, we met in London and our school or university friends have all dispersed across the country.” “It’s so rare to find ourselves together in the same place without making a very deliberate effort. So we arrange a real party weekend once a year, normally around Glastonbury when all are welcome.” “We have big screens to show the festival, marquees, a barbecue, and friends camp in the garden. It really is a dream location for this type of event - a really large, versatile space where everyone can relax and there’s greenery and nature all around.”

Main/Right: The couple installed a new bespoke kitchen in two-tone Plum Brandy and Rouge II shades. Adjacent is the vestibule snug and dining room.

Lincs Pride AUGUST 241.qxp 29/06/2022 14:15 Page 69

The Grade II listed barns were part of a larger farming estate belonging to the Cust Brownlows dating back to the 1800s and were privately owned until the 1990s when a lack of successor to farm the land led to the estate being split up and sold off. The first owners moved in back in 1997 and completed a full conversion of the former cattle sheds and crew yards into a residential property. The first owners lived in the barns until 2013, when Anna and Ben purchased the property, with Anna five months pregnant at the time with the first of their two sons. “It’s been an amazing family home, somewhere the boys have been able to grow up not just in safety but surrounded by nature too. The arrival of spring is marked by the appearance of a family of Wagtails who visit us every year, and we’re very attached to the blue tits, owls and blackbirds who also call this place home.”

“We were lucky that the house was in good order when we moved in with modern wiring, plumbing and a roof that were all sound, so all we had to do was put our individuality into the property.” The couple installed a bespoke kitchen finished in heritage colours from the Paint & Paper Library, notably Plum Brandy and Rouge II. Elsewhere the cabinetry is finished in Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin with granite work surfaces, a boiling/filtered water tap and premium appliances from brands like Miele and Neff. Arranged over two floors, the property has five bedrooms including a dressing room and en suite to master plus two further en suite bathrooms. One wing of the house has an additional kitchenette, family bathroom and bedroom making the property more than ideal for intergenerational living. >> 69

PROPERTY

>> Elsewhere there’s a large vestibule adjacent to the kitchen with a separate family room. Outdoors, too, the semi-enclosed courtyard of the property with its arches and quoining creates a super terrace that the family has re-landscaped in local limestone, complementing the rest of the property with its local stone and Collyweston slate roofing. “We inherited an absolutely amazing garden from the previous owner, who was a really talented plantsperson, and beyond the gravel garden there’s a paddock which makes up most of the 1.8 acres of the land.” The family’s children love making dens in the shrubbery, have their fort and trampoline in the garden and in summer enjoy reading their books in their hammock strung up between the weeping willows. Close by is the children’s primary school – Copthill. Witham Hall, Stamford and Bourne’s primary schools are also all within 15 minutes – but as the two boys transition from primary to secondary education the family are seeking somewhere a little closer to their future secondary schools, and so the house has been put on the market. The family say they’ll miss the place greatly, but with such flexible, spacious and modern accommodation, Grange Court’s next owners are sure to love it just as much! n 70

BAREFOOT RETREATS

Luxury Staycations with

BAREFOOT RETREATS A high quality getaway without going too far? The North Norfolk region is the perfect destination, and Barefoot Retreats’ portfolio of over 100 beautiful properties represent the perfect accommodation... WHEN THE SUN SHINES, Great Britain is still one of the greatest places to enjoy a long weekend or a staycation. Especially over the last couple of years when international travel has been tricky, unpredictable or just less desirable, many have happily rediscovered the joy of exploring our own countryside, from the Lakes to the Cotswolds to London and the Peak District. But as nice as all those destinations are, there’s no substitute for North Norfolk if you’re looking for somewhere close by, with spectacular scenery, and plenty to do. And completing its long list of desirable qualities, there’s no shortage of superb places to stay, whether you’re a couple seeking a quiet getaway, a large family wishing to celebrate a special occasion or a group of friends who want to have fun and spend time with one another. Happily, Burnham Market-based Barefoot Retreats specialises in its very luxurious self-catering accommodation with over 100 different properties in its portfolio, all offering spectacular character and true individuality.

With the truly unenviable task of enjoying one of the company’s properties for a weekend, to ‘test drive’ its accommodation, we headed to The Watermill, with the Pride team in tow, and immediately the property elicited impressive gasps as we stepped into the property and saw the quality of accommodation on offer. >>

Words: Rob Davis. Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

75

Lincs Pride AUGUST 241.qxp 29/06/2022 14:15 Page 76

>> The Watermill was originally known as Union Mill, and was constructed in 1737. It was one of only two mills in the county to be powered by both water (via a tributary of The River Burn), and wind (via its four patent sails with copper shutters). These drove two and three pairs of French Burr millstones respectively, and the mill remained in service right up until 1969 at which time the steam engine and gas engines which replaced the wind and water power were all destroyed following a fire. The mill was purchased in 1999 and in 2001, it underwent extensive renovation, to create a six-bedroomed property. Above: The property’s first floor open plan living kitchen features a chunky 10-seat dining area, and exposed millworks, and there’s an adjacent living room too.

76

Lincs Pride AUGUST 241.qxp 29/06/2022 14:15 Page 77

Carrying a Grade II listing, and arranged over four floors, the owners have made a huge effort to retain the integrity of the property and preserve its industrial past, with exposed millworkings still visible in the open plan kitchen and dining room. For visitors like the Pride team, then, the character of the property is a considerable part of The Watermill’s charm, but the place is hugely practical, too. With three couples and a brace of teenagers in tow, there was plenty of space for everyone. A spacious entrance hall on the ground floor includes the original mill wheel mechanism and a second kitchen, as well as access to the hardwood deck with the millpond running underneath it.

“Happily, we happen to choose the sunniest and warmest evening of the year to enjoy a barbecue on the decking...” Up the winding stairs you’ll find a huge open plan kitchen and dining area with modern shaker kitchen and all the mod cons... not to mention some traditional ones as well, like the wheelworks, a spur wheel and mill shaft, as well as a couple of millstones. The chunky dining table seats 10 in comfort, and adjacent to the living kitchen is a comfy

lounge with home cinema and large squashy sofas for movie night or teenagers who are permanently attached to their mobiles. On the second and third floor are six bedrooms – a king, four doubles and a twin – each with an en suite and with period features like exposed eaves throughout. Happily, we happen to choose the sunniest and warmest evening of the year to enjoy a barbecue on the decking, and we spent the evening relaxing with good wine and good company as the sun set along the river. Waking up the next morning was a pleasure too, with a visit from fellow resident Derek the duck, as we enjoyed breakfast on the decking. >> 77

Lincs Pride AUGUST 241.qxp 29/06/2022 14:15 Page 78

>> Best of all, from The Watermill, we were right in the heart of Burnham Market and in of North Norfolk, with plenty of restaurants in walking distance, from Socius and No29 to The Hoste Arms and the village chippy. Also in the village are no fewer than 30 independent shops to enjoy exploring, and sandy beaches less than 15 minutes away. A mention, too, for the Barefoot Retreats welcome pack with good bread, biscuits, guides to the area and a bottle of local wine to enjoy. As an experience, the beautiful property, fantastic location and great service from Barefoot Retreats is unsurpassed. It’s one of the best experiences we’ve enjoyed, and a great way to remind yourself of just how great, Great Britain can be. n Above: As the sun sets, you’ll enjoy stunning views over the River Burn. KITCHENS BY RICHWOOD CABINET MAKERS

A PERFECT PARTNERSHIP with

RICHWOOD

CABINET MAKERS Alex Richardson of Richwood Cabinet Makers has enjoyed a long-standing working relationship with Willow Homes Lincolnshire... but his latest job for the company was especially important! Words & Images: Rob Davis.

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE... which probably helps to explain why there’s such synergy between Alex Richardson, owner of Richwood Cabinet Makers, and his long-standing client, Willow Homes. Alex’s father Alan established the business in 1991 and soon both were working hard to maintain the company’s reputation as the home for exceptionally well made kitchens that embody traditional craftsmanship and great design. Alex took over the family business in 2017 and now works alongside mum Sue and another member of staff in the workshop with the same aim, but also a commitment to uphold his dad’s business after Alan passed away in February. The company have worked on previous projects with Willow Homes Lincolnshire Ltd, which specialises in building either small development of up to eight homes, or more typically one-off properties for clients, project managing the creation of beautiful brand new homes which have quality and individuality at their heart... hence the similar values in both companies. Mark & Julie Robinson and their sons Edward & Tom are currently working on a development in Helpringham, but one with a difference. Edward and his partner Georgie will live in one of these homes, nearing completion. Who else would Edward trust to create the kitchen in their new property, an Ancaster stone house with four bedrooms, but Alex? “We’re used to collaborating with our clients, from finding and purchasing a plot to building their dream home on the site,” says Edward. “Your home is really personal so it’s always very much client-led, very collaborative. We want to deliver what our clients are looking for in a home, not build a house for just anyone.” “We want this to be a our ‘forever home,’ so it’s great that Alex really took the time to find out what we wanted, make suggestions and really give us his input.” >>

Opposite: Alex Richardson of Richwood Cabinet Makers created this completely bespoke kitchen for client Edward Robinson of Willow Homes Lincolnshire Ltd... Edward and his family usually makes homes for other people but on this occasion, this Ancaster cottage is a ‘forever home’ for the developer himself and partner Georgie.

RICHWOOD CABINET MAKERS

“We love the kitchen and can’t wait to move in to our home,” says Edward. “Alex is great; creative, honest, and really delivers on quality. It’s always a pleasure to work with him!” Above: Alex sourced Neff ovens with ‘hide and slide’ doors for Edward. His cabinetry is hand-made and solid with traditional dovetail joints and even a Richwood ‘signature’ incorporated.

92

Lincs Pride AUGUST 241.qxp 29/06/2022 14:16 Page 93

>> “He thinks of so many details and important considerations. The result is a kitchen that we know we’ll be happy with for years in terms of both design and quality.” Alex reckons that creating 10 kitchens a year is the right number to ensure each one can be completely hand-made whilst not turning work away, but he also takes on two or three larger clients a year – those looking for him to create their kitchen, fitted furniture in bedrooms, utilities and studies at the same time. Each one is made from hardwoods like beech and all cabinetry is made by hand with traditional dovetail joints, bespoke inserts for cutlery, utensils and saucepans. This kitchen is classically in-frame shaker in style with beading to the cabinetry edges and all handsprayed in Farrow & Ball’s Purbeck Stone and Worsted shades with tongue and groove detailing to end panels. Alex tends to recommend solid surfaces and on Edward and Georgie’s kitchen, the two opted for white Silestone engineered quartz. Appliances like the larder fridge and freezer and dishwasher, induction hob and downdraft extractor are all neatly integrated. “We love the kitchen and can’t wait to move in to our home,” says Edward. “Alex is great; creative, honest, and really delivers on quality. It’s always a pleasure to work with him, but it’s usually our clients getting their dream kitchen in one of the homes we build. This time we’ll get to enjoy it for ourselves!” n

What a difference a door makes... It seems like the colder months are a lifetime away, but now’s the time to plan a replacement of your front door, adding greater kerb value to your property, improving security and of course, making your home warmer and cosier during winter. Roy Wakeman OBE Chairman of the New Window Company takes up the story...

The oldest doors in the world were made of timber, still there and working. You can see on many of our finest heritage buildings be they churches, colleges or other fine institutional facilities how magnificent the doors look because in the main our heritage is protected. This is a far cry from the cheap doors brought in from the far east to fund an explosion in private house ownership in the 1960s through to the very recent times. For those that could and can still buy their local authority house in which they live first invest in new doors and windows. The market research carried out by the British Wood Working Federation in the late 1970s when Taiwanese imports were at their highest, showed that in the UK the price elasticity and resistance from consumers to invest in new front doors petered out at about £50 whereas in West Germany at the same time this was in the region of £3,000. This prompted at the time an Industry funded promotional campaign aimed at the consumer to sell timber doors made in the UK named ‘What a difference a door makes.’ This was very successful and whilst we didn’t see off the imports completely, we did educate the consumer who gradually increased their willingness to spend more on their new front doors. Timber entrance door production in the UK increased because of this and peaked at volumes close to 3 million units and manufacturers values of £400m by 1986.

A national standard for security has existed along with test methodology to BS7950 which values security, thermal efficiency with u value calculus, and weather resistance to regional degrees of exposure. Even more important now as we face escalating energy and fuel costs. In 2017 a new requirement under the building regulation’s part Q was introduced which demands even greater security standards for external doors and windows. Current market research suggests that the major driving force for consumers when purchasing new doors and windows is security, energy efficiency and conservation, but also adding beauty and real value to the house. It is little wonder then that the Timber Door complete with all the appropriate ironmongery, factory assembled and finished is now leading the way again to dominate the choice for new door designs that more than satisfy todays demanding new standards. Timber is the most versatile of all materials and can be easily finished with modern waterborne paints or stains from a huge range of colours and wood stains. These modern finishes now come with lifetime warranties for the complete door set with maintenance a very minimum and the paint itself expected to last for up to 12 years before new decoration needed. Products made by timberwindows.com and installed by The New Window Company at Frieston Heath, Caythorpe near Grantham all meet the very high standards demanded today. n

A WALK WITH

PRIDE

A RAMBLE AROUND THE VILLAGE OF BRANSTON Look out for some stunning views of Lincoln Cathedral along the route of this eight mile walk around the pretty village of Branston Words: Lincolnshire Ramblers, www.ramblers.org.uk/lincolnshire.

Distance: 8 miles / 12.8 km. Route: See map overleaf. How to Get There: LN41PA (approx); OS grid reference TF017676. More Information: www.lincolnshireramblers.org.uk.

Leave Branston Village Hall by the main entrance onto Lincoln Road and carefully cross over, turn right and walk past the entrance to Branston Hall Hotel.

!

At the end of their wall take the public footpath to the left and walk with woods to your left and garden fences to your right. Follow this path for almost half a mile, cross one small lane (A) and continue in the same direction until you come to an open field ahead. Turn left at the footpath sign onto a field edge path and keep the overgrown hedge to your left and the field to the right. At the bottom of the slope turn left to join a wide grassy track.

Follow this eventually going right, crossing the stream by the stepping stones (B). Follow the field edge path up the slope keeping woodland to your left and the field to the right. At the end of the bridleway join Hall Lane and turn left to walk towards Branston. As you enter the village you are going to take the footpath to the right but before you do this it is worth going a little further down the lane. There are two picnic tables and a bench beside the stream, a good place for a drink stop (C). If you turn right beside the stream and walk along Waterwheel Lane, you will see the restored waterwheel, constructed in 1870 to supply water to the houses of the local gentry. The first wheel, which began turning in 1879, was a wooden one with the present restored metal one replacing it in the early 20thC; this remained in use until the 1930s when Branston got a mains water supply. Return to Hall Lane, retrace your steps, then take the footpath that is now on

your left. It’s a wide track with an orchard to the left and fields to the right. After the orchard, continue on the track as it winds gradually uphill for just over a mile with mainly woodland to the left and fields to the right. At one point it looks as though a footpath sign points you into a field but just do a slight left and right and keep to the grassy path at the edge of the field. Where the woods on your left finish, continue slightly left to a footbridge through the hedge ahead. This will bring you to a reservoir at Mere, another nice place to stop for refreshments (D). Turn right and follow the track, with the reservoir on your left, walk through four zigzags to emerge onto Bloxholme Lane (E). Turn right and walk along the lane for about 3⁄4 mile to a footpath sign on the right. Follow the footpath with a hedge on your left and fields on the right. At the end of the path turn right onto a farm track and then almost immediately left onto a bridleway. >> 103

WALK WITH PRIDE

>> Follow this grassy path with a hedge to the left and field to the right to the end and join Folly Lane. There is a bench here if you feel ready for another refreshment break. Turn left and follow the lane until you reach the entrance to Westfield Farm on your left. Follow the bridleway ahead, the track bending to the right and winding its way around the grounds of Ashfield House. At a left bend (F), ignore the bridleway signed to the right, staying on the track with the grounds of Ashfield House on your left. Follow the track, now surfaced, and walk down to Lincoln Road at the end. Cross the road with care and turn right to walk along the pavement for 100 yards before turning left onto a restricted byway. Pass farm buildings on your right and continue to follow the farm track between fields as it gradually climbs to pass the former Washingborough Top Farm on the right. The track continues to zigzag over the heath with views of Lincoln Cathedral ahead, then descending to join Cliff Lane (G). Follow the footpath sign to the right and stay on the track through the buildings of Cliff Farm.

After a few yards, look for a gap in the hedge with footpath sign (H), turn right through the gap and walk uphill with hedge on the right and field to your left. You are now approaching the outskirts of Branston, pass through the gap at the back of the houses and follow the path with houses on the left and brambles to the right.

Just after you join a tarmac path turn right to cross a local nature reserve known as The Jungle. Ignore the boardwalk that turns to the left, but continue up to the footpath sign on the far side. Turn right along the footpath for a few yards then turn left into Laburnum Close.

At the top of the Close turn right into Beech Road (I) and take the first turning left into Forsythia Close. Follow the Close as it bends to the right, then go through the gate on the left into playing fields and cross to the village hall on the far side... and now, you’re back where you started! n

Self-guided walks from the Lincolnshire Ramblers can be found at www.lincolnshireramblers.org.uk.

MOTORS

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL

Land Rover’s Defender 130 There’s a new version of Land Rover’s rebooted Defender, a much longer 130 which sits above the existing 110 and 90 models. With eight seats and a massive boot, is this the Defender to choose?

LAND ROVER’S newest Defender is in it for the long haul, and long is certainly the operative word. Sitting above the three door, 90 (which has up to six seats) and the 110 model (which has five doors and up to seven seats) is this new flagship model.

more than a 110 model Defender, and six times larger than the boot of a Ford Focus.

It’s badged the 130 and can be configured with up to eight seats; two in the front, three in the middle row and three in the rear.

The standard air suspension provides 43cm of axle articulation for creeping over rocks and traversing deep muddy ruts, and the car can still wade through water 90cm deep. So far, so practical, then.

The 130 has an extra 34cm of length to compared to the 110 model, so the two are identical right back to the C-pillar (i.e.: the rear doors) then the extra length is engineered in from the rear doors to the tailgate. In total the 130 is a whopping 5,358mm long (even longer than a Range Rover, or Mercedes G-Class) and its massive boot has up to 2,516 litres of space, which is 953 litres 106

Furthermore, Land Rover promises that thanks to its clever packaging, the 130’s off-road ability hasn’t been compromised by the extra length and rear overhang.

However, with prices for the 130 starting at £73,895 and topping out at just over £100,000, this is a car that commands Range Rover money, which puts it firmly in the same market as luxury off-roaders, rather than cars for utility companies or landowners seeking a huge cargo area or the ability to transport teams to job sites. Land Rover’s insistence on producing yet another luxury 4x4 rather than a nofrills workhorse means farmers and other outdoor workers are likely to still look to considerably cheaper alternatives like the forthcoming new Ford Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux as a vehicle of choice. The 130 body may yet yield a pick-up version, but if prices are too high, Defender will remain a luxury car rather than a practical workhorse. n

Returning to the Showground for the

Burton Hunt Ball 2022 RETURNING to the Lincolnshire Showground recently, The Burton Hunt Supporters’ Club recently welcomed 450 subscribers to enjoy a black tie event. The event is usually held at the end of the season in winter, but the unconventional timing didn’t prevent lots of fun and laughter with a drinks reception, three course supper, then music from party band My Mate Kate. There was a casino too, and a Champagne raffle draw to participate in. The Supporters’ Club was founded in 1958 and now draws a large amount of support from non-riding hunt followers, headed up by chairman Simon Chappel. The hunt itself is one of the oldest packs in the country, and was divided up in 1871 to create the Blankney. The hunt’s territory extends from Lincoln to Grayingham, and from the Trent to Baumber. n Words & Images: Rob Davis.

PATIENTS AT PETERBOROUGH’S Ramsay Group Fitzwilliam Hospital are appreciating the benefits of a brand new, state-of-the-art MRI scanner which was commissioned for use just last month. Medical imaging allows clinicians to see exactly what’s going on inside the body, without surgical investigation. One of the most effective means of diagnosis is utilising MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), which uses a magnetic field to produce detailed three-dimensional images allowing investigations into many conditions from gynaecological problems such as endometriosis to musculoskeletal complaints such as prolapsed discs in the spine. Last month, Chief Executive Officer for Ramsay Health Care, Nick Costa, performed the opening ceremony for the new MRI scanner at the Peterborough-based Ramsay Fitzwilliam Hospital. The Siemens Sola 1.5T Tesla MRI scanner offers extremely high performance in a larger wide-bore scanner. Using the latest hardware and software including BioMatrix technology, the new MRI scanner provides consistent, high-quality personalised exams with increased productivity. Robust and reliable results for every patient to support their diagnosis will improve scan efficiency and ultimately enhance the patient’s experience. “Our MRI upgrade allows us to offer advanced technology imaging services for

It includes more patient comfort measures such as unique coils that can flexibly adapt to patients’ bodies while they undergo MRI exams.” “Fitzwilliam’s Radiology department is well designed, focusing on our patient’s journey, offering a relaxed, dignified and professional MRI diagnostic service.
