Butchers Pride Awards Winner...
PRIDE’S EDITOR JUDGED BUTCHERS PRIDE TO FIND BEST LINCS SAUSAGE
SPALDING Sir John Hayes, MP for Spalding and the Deepings, recently chaired the eighth annual Butcher’s Pride Awards at the Cley Hall Hotel in Spalding. He was a judge in the competition alongside Editor of Lincolnshire Pride Tilly Wilkinson, Boston College Chair of Governors Peter Cropley, Spalding Guardian Editor Jeremy Ransome, Lincolnshire Co-op Manager Wayne Dennett and Chris Jones of Batemans Brewery. “We tasted 24 sausages in total,” says Tilly Wilkinson. “It was a challenge, but we enjoyed every bite! It was my first year as a judge, and I was very impressed with the quality of the county’s butchers.” The winners of the competition were CJ Butchers of Boston, a new competitor in the Butchers Pride Awards, and unanimously voted by the
judges as the best Lincolnshire sausage for 2019. Adams of Spalding took second place with its famous 1910 recipe, Bycrofts of Boston came in third and

Trevor Sharpe of Gosberton was fourth. Lyell and Son of Boston were fifth. There were 13 entries in total. The winner of the speciality sausage was Bennetts of
Spalding’s pork & stilton followed by a hog roast sausage, reggae sausage and a honey & mustard sausage all from Adams of Spalding. Thank you to everyone who took part!
LOUTH A Grade II* stately home dating back to 1750 and its 150 acre country estate are to be restored by 2020, following public consultation. South Ormsby Estate between Louth and Horncastle was designed by Georgian architect James Paine, who went on to create some of Britain’s best-known country houses and estates such as the park bridge and grand stables of Chatsworth House. The property was once the country seat of the Massingberg-Mundy family before passing into the ownership of Jon and Jan
Thornes in 2016 in a state of disrepair, with the conservationists managing to make the property watertight and preventing it from deteriorating further. Since then, the couple have planned to restore Paine’s original architecture, including its entrance hall and six principal rooms to create six short stay heritage apartments. Other plans include the creation a pool house to replace an earlier structure and to open the estate to the public on heritage days. It’s hoped restoration will begin soon and will be completed in 2020. n
GRANTHAM CHURCH INVITES DESIGNS
GRANTHAM St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham is inviting Lincolnshire people to design a flag to mark the 1,300th anniversary of its namesake’s death in 2020. Adults and children alike are invited to paint or draw their design to celebrate the life of its patron saint. Saint Wulfram of Fontenelle was the archbishop of Sens in AD700. “St Wulfram is a great example of multiculturalism, and a real advocate for working
across political and historic divides,” says Fr., Stuart Cradduck, rector. “The church itself has a huge presence in the town, but unlike other local, national and international saints he doesn’t have a flag which represents him.” So as part of our preparations for this significant year we are wanting to commission a new flag for Wulfram, and we hope as many people as possible will want to take part.” n See www.stwulframs.org.uk.

With an increasing number of buyers from London and the South looking to relocate to our area and commute back and forth to London, the opening of a second train station office at Peterborough Station earlier this year was a natural follow on to Moores Country & Commuting’s Grantham Train Station office, explains Managing Director, Vernon Moore... The PeTerborough oFFice for Moores country & commuting is on the London platform of Peterborough station, next to Waitrose, with less than half a dozen paces for commuters stepping from the London train. Their grantham office is similarly on the London Platform. “With the increase in flexible working practices, the request for homes within easy access of grantham and Peterborough Train Stations has increased significantly; coupled with the good value for money our area offers and the excellent schooling, out of area buyers are drawn to homes along the A1 corridor and by extension, the main London train line,” explains Vernon. exclusive to Moores is their Meet & greet Service where they meet relocating buyers from either train station to take them around properties on their books.
“each visiting buyer is shown any number of properties which fit their requirements and it’s amazing what you can learn about their requirements whilst sat in the car with them for a few hours!” adds Vernon. The firm’s Meet & greet Service is supported by its Spring & Summer Property road Shows. This is where Moores takes its properties to buyers, visiting its partner agents to meet their vendors who are looking to move to our area. These partners have branches in greater London, hertfordshire, buckinghamshire, bedfordshire etc., and are selling for exactly the Vendors that are looking to move to our area. To have your property included in a road Show, all Moores need is a front photograph and floor plan; a contract to fully market isn’t always necessary to tempt these buyers to view! n

‘No-Fault’ Divorce... By Wilkin Chapman Partner and Head of the Family Department Lisa Boileau.
MOVES to introduce ‘no-fault’ divorce across England and Wales have been widely welcomed as a way in which parting couples can reduce conflict and smooth the pathway for both themselves and any children involved. It is now hoped by those who have campaigned for this change, that the Government will be able to accelerate this proposed new legislation with as few delays as possible. There are fears that continued Brexit negotiations will hold-up such proceedings, and there is a determination to keep the pressure on, in order to see a relevant Bill passed as soon as is practical. Presently, as divorcing or divorced couples will be well aware, there is a necessity to apportion blame on one side or the other – either that, or they must wait two years with the consent of both parties. If one side of the partnership does not agree, that wait can extend to five years in the absence of any other grounds of divorce being available. It is important to note however, that the divorce itself is only a small aspect of the overall proceedings, and often
the most straight-forward part – and this will remain the case.
“financial implications of splitting any assets very often need extremely careful thought and negotiation”
It is the long-term financial future of both parties that can often be the more complex and important aspect – who gets what, for whom, when and how much, will determine how both sides can move forward.
who were waiting to be separated for two years can accelerate their plans. There may be others who think it will be easier to ‘go it alone’ when it comes to separation and divorcing.
However, anyone thinking of separating or divorcing from their spouse should always seek expert legal advice first, to ensure they protect their position and make the best decisions for their particular circumstances. For a discussion about any aspect of divorce or separation please speak to Lisa on 01522 515946 or email Lisa.Boileau@wilkinchapman.co.uk or visit wilkinchapman.co.uk
And this is where expert advice really makes the difference. For example, the division of a pension pot and the financial implications of splitting any assets very often need extremely careful thought and negotiation – without such there can be horrendous consequences, especially if couples attempt to deal with such matters themselves. This proposed new change in the law, when it is implemented, may well see an initial rise in divorce rates, as those

High summer in Lincolnshire means rolling Wolds scenery, the expansive Fens and of course, big skies. But to really show off the county, photographer Dean Fisher loves to think differently and work at dawn or in twilight. Here we’ve picked a few of our favourite images from the artist’s portfolio... not so much a case of things that go bump in the night, but rather, things that go click in the night... or first thing in the morning. We’re all used to seeing these Lincolnshire landmarks by day, but when you hear the click of a shutter release at twilight, or at dawn, you can be assured of more dramatic images... that’s assuming you can master the art of low light photography as well as Dean Fisher.
Ever since he’s enjoyed discovering his native Boston, Lincoln, Skegness, Heckington and Stamford to capture his images. “It’s really interesting to see how a scene can differ from daylight to night time,” says Dean. “I usually have a recce and see what scenes I could shoot from, do my research, maybe take a few test shots, then go back at night time and take proper images. ere’s a lot of post-production afterwards, but there’s nothing more satisfying than capturing a really good image!”
If you’ve ever tried to capture a night image you’ll know how tricky it is to get a steady image - especially one with vibrant colours - even if you’ve a tripod to hand. One man who knows exactly what to do to capture breathtaking images at dawn or at night is Dean Fisher. By day he’s a photographer for local estate agents, but being a true night-owl, he quickly learned a new specialism in the form of night time photography. Dean has been a drone user for a while now, using a DJI aircraft for daytime
and night time photography, but quickly discovered its image capturing limits. Adding a Nikon camera to his kit bag enabled him to take his night time photography even further, capturing several different images, each 34 megapixels, then blending them together to ensure he can get every last details from a scene.
“I always been fascinated by reflections on water, by the way different ages of buildings come together in our towns or cities, and how light changes the way a building looks from daytime to evening.” is month we’re publishing a few of our favourite images, all of which are available to purchase as prints directly from the photographer. >>

THE GRAND TOUR of Grimsthorpe Castle As you tour Grimsthorpe Castle admiring the enormous collection of paintings and antiques acquired through centuries by the Willoughby family, remember Henry VIII took the very same steps. In this feature, we go back in time with the people keeping the Castle alive to discover the incredible past of this Lincolnshire landmark... Main: Grimsthorpe Castle. Words: Tilly Wilkinson. “Henry VIII gave the estate of Grimsthorpe as a wedding present to 11th Baron Willoughby in 1516...”
The long drive that leads to Grimsthorpe Castle near Bourne is so impressive that it’s hard to believe the interiors could be grander than its imposing façade. The walls, inside and out, of this incredible structure are dripping in history simply waiting to be discovered.
It’s therefore understandable that curator Emma Miller, head tour guide Philippa Lane and head gardener Jim Handley are all extremely passionate about what they do and value their importance in the role of maintaining and preserving this time machine into our country’s lengthy history. In addition to discovering the story of Grimsthorpe, its family and the people who have walked its halls, this month we’re interviewing three key people behind its preservation.
Emma Miller, curator at the Castle, is very passionate about what she does because of the role’s importance, but she also has personal ties that means being curator satisfies her curiosity. “My husband is Managing Director of the Trust and Lady Jane Willoughby de Eresby’s cousin so I’m connected to the family through marriage,” says Emma.

able to pass through the female line. There are three or four of these so this was rare.”
“Catherine married Charles Brandon when she was 14 and he in his 40s. This age gap was not as unusual as it sounds at that time. Catherine was brought up as a staunch Catholic but became an evangelical protestant later in life. When Henry VIII died and Edward VI’s short reign ended and Mary, infamous Catholic, took the throne, Catherine had to flee into exile with her second husband Richard Bertie. We know that Mary was actively pursuing her too.”
“The couple had one surviving son named Peregrine - peregrinus is Latin for wandering as he was born during their time in exile. When Elizabeth I replaced Mary, they returned with their son and a daughter Susan to Grimsthorpe and Peregrine went on to become a great military man and commander of Elizabeth’s armies in the Netherlands. He married the daughter of the Earl of Oxford, who occupied the hereditary office of the Lord Great Chamberlain. This still remains in the Willoughby family today. The family later became Dukes.” “To celebrate their new status as Dukes, the family called in the famed architect Sir John Vanbrugh who also designed Blenheim Palace. He redesigned the front façade and was commissioned to remodel all of the Castle, but he died in 1726 halfway through the work with only the north front finished.” The architect Samuel Page made some further alterations to the exterior in 1811. “I was originally a lawyer but my husband was in the army which meant we moved around an awful lot. I would take part-time jobs in museums and galleries, and have always had an interest in art history. When we settled here, it seemed natural for me to take the post of curator.”
“My role involves creating a database of all our archives, ensuring all conservation work is kept on top of, updating the Castle website and lending certain items to exhibitions around the country. It also involves studying its history and the archives in an attempt to find any new information I can.”
Emma knows the history of the Willoughby family and its ties to Grimsthorpe extensively, which begins in 1516 Tudor England when
William Willoughby, 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, was betrothed to María de Salinas, a Spanish noblewoman and lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon, the Spanish princess married to Henry VIII.
“The 18th century was the turn of the ‘Grand Tour’ which was when English aristocrats would tour Europe and return with lavish furnishings to add to their own collections. The family at Grimsthorpe were avid collectors, so their Grand Tour was lucrative. This is certainly evident as you tour the Castle.”
“It wasn’t until the 1540s however that the first Willoughby actually lived at the Castle. William and María’s daughter Catherine succeeded William in the baronetcy after his death. Some of the oldest English baronies were created by writ of summons and are

“Henry VIII was thrilled at the news of their engagement,” says Emma. “It cemented the ties between England and Spain and bolstered his wife Catherine’s position in court. As a wedding present, he gave them Grimsthorpe Castle and its lands.”
“In the early 19th Century, the Dukedom sadly died out as there was no male heir but the baronetcy carried on to one of two sisters. The sister who did not receive the baronetcy married the Marquess of Cholmondeley, so the Lord Great Chamberlain position was split between three families.”

HEAD GARDENER: Jim Handley... The Castle’s grandeur doesn’t stop within its walls. The 70 acres of gardens in the 17,000 acre estate is managed by Jim Handley and his team of four gardeners. “I’m originally from Shropshire, training at Kew Gardens in London,” says Jim. “I’ve been working in horticulture for 20 years now and have been at Grimsthorpe for six.”
The gardens at Grimsthorpe are made up of formal lawns, hedges, topiary, an ornamental kitchen garden, rose parterre and herbaceous borders. The original walled garden reopened last year and has an interesting collection of art from The Lettering Arts Trust within it.
A visit includes a children’s play area in the woodland, a beautiful landscape attributed to Capability Brown that can be viewed from the gardens and explored by walking and cycling.
“Unfortunately, there are few historical records of the gardens” says Jim. “We’re sure that London & Wise were involved in the garden’s original conception in the 1700s, followed by Stephen Switzer, a lesser known designer whose work has been described as the precursor to the landscape movement.”
“The ornamental kitchen garden is the latest addition to the garden, created in the 1960s by Lady Ancaster. She was a very passionate gardener and the daughter of Nancy Astor, American-born politician and first female Member of Parliament.”
If you visit the gardens in June, you will see a burgeoning ornamental kitchen garden which supplies the tearoom with produce for you to enjoy. Roses will be in full bloom around the gardens softening formal hedges and topiary, setting the scene of a traditional English garden.

It’s Tudor, and the thirteenth-century turret pictured is the oldest part of the Castle. The windows on the top floor would have been the servants’ quarters. The kitchen garden is now on the east side of the house.

“The people of Grimsthorpe Castle, and particularly the women, were strong-minded marvellous characters; Nancy Astor, first female MP, was among those women...” Grimsthorpe were sold at auction. Peter was able to buy back some of the more important pieces, but he also bought other items to refurnish the house which greatly added to the collection in the house today. He married Clementina Drummond, the heiress daughter of Baron Perth, which brought Drummond Castle and its estate into the family, now part of the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Trust. It was their daughter who became Baroness Willoughby de Eresby around 1870 and widow of Sir Gilbert Heathcote of Normanton Park in Rutland. Many of the furnishings from Normanton were brought to Grimsthorpe before Normanton was demolished in 1924.” In the long hallway of Grimsthorpe Castle, there is a collection of paintings of members of the family. One that particularly catches your eye is that of Eloise Breese, who looks as though she were the inspiration of the character Lady Mary from Downton Abbey. She is fierce-looking and uniquely posed compared to the other portraits. “Eloise was an American from New York,” says Emma. She married Gilbert Willoughby in 1905 and they had four children. Eloise was responsible for some of the more unique rooms in Grimsthorpe like the dark walls of the tapestry drawing room. She called the shade ‘cigar’ and it was highly unusual for 20th century Britain. She is also responsible for the striking black and gold livery of the fretwork in the Chinese drawing room with its hand-painted walls and octagon ceiling.”
“When her portrait was taken, she took control of her positioning and clothing, telling the esteemed painter Philip de Lázsló exactly how she wanted portraying, also unusual. She was described in the Kansas City Star as ‘the loveliest married, young woman in society.’ She is certainly one of the Willoughby family’s extraordinary members.” 37
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:16 Page 38
The people of Grimsthorpe Castle, and particularly the women, were strong-minded and marvellous characters. They provide an extraordinary story in the history of an English peerage based in Lincolnshire. One of the women who also admires its stories is Philippa Lane, head tour guide. “I’ve been a tour guide at Grimsthorpe for over 24 years now!” says Philippa. “I love it and I love the team of 14 guides I work with. I’m still learning new things about this incredible place. When I first began, it was a little daunting as to how much there is to know about the Castle and its collection of fine art and antiques, but after 24 years, it’s built in to my brain now!”
“I love all the unusual facts in history most. For example, you’ll see golden stands in the state drawing room; these were used on cold evenings when the fire was lit to block the heat from getting to the ladies’ faces and therefore making them go red rather than the popular bright white shade at the time. And it was custom for the Lord Great Chamberlain to choose items from a coronation to take home, which is why Queen Victoria’s and Albert’s thrones sit in Grimsthorpe alongside her coronation table. It is quips such as these that make history and this Castle so fascinating.”
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of this incredible Castle and we encourage our readers to see it for themselves! Wander the great halls, and explore the gardens and landscape attributed to Capability Brown, walking in the footsteps of some of the most famous - and infamous - characters in Britain’s great history.

The Highlights of the Tour...
Words: Tilly Wilkinson.
The Tapestry Drawing Room: The uniqueness of this room comes from Eloise Breese, one of the former ladies of the house. She painted the room in ‘cigar’ as she said this complemented the furnishings and tapestries. There are so many unique features to it like the fish scale detailing by the windows.
The Grand Tour: Lords and ladies would usually collect two of everything and position them at opposing ends of a room but this piece is unique. It was bought in Rome in 1843 by Peter Robert, 19th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, to be a part of the Willoughby collection.
Queen Victoria’s Throne: The office of the Lord Great Chamberlain is occupied by the Willoughbys in addition to two other noble families. It was custom for the Lord Great Chamberlain to select a few items from a coronation to keep. You’ll see tapestries, thrones and even coronation tables at Grimsthorpe.
The American Influence: Eloise Breese was the 2nd Countess of Ancaster of Grimsthorpe Castle. She was a unique character in the way she designed the house to the way she asked a painter to portray her. She’s had a significant impact on the way the Castle looks today and her portrait can be seen in the Long Gallery.
The Family: As you stroll by the paintings in the Long Gallery, you will see the very first Willoughbys to live there in chronological order to the current Willoughbys. One particular painting is of a group of children in the family. They would paint children who had died as angels in the clouds above.
The Gothic Bedroom: There are many bedrooms off of the long gallery but this one is of particular note. It features an embroidered pelmet from the coronation banquet of George IV and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has recently stayed in the bedroom. There are several bedrooms like this that are still used in the Castle.

The Old Tile Works
BARTON-UPON-HUMBER
This month we’re enjoying dining in style... or rather, dining around tiles, with a rather smart daytime dining experience within tickling distance of the mighty Humber Bridge. Looking to stretch your legs on a Saturday afternoon? Head to The Old Tile Works and its artisan village at Barton-upon-Humber! Funny how times change, isn’t it? For a long time the south banks of the Humber Estuary could hardly be described as a destination for visitors, let alone a place to spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon.
From the 1840s, the clay banks helped the brick and tile industry to thrive as successive swathes of claggy, damp clay were dug out of the ground to service local tile and brick works.
Words & Images: Rob Davis.
BARTON’S HARRY HARRISON
The hulking brutalist Humber Bridge opened in 1981 and soon after, with the usable clay extracted, the various clay pit sites were acquired in 1983 by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to undergo transformation into what is now the Far Ings Nature Reserve.
The Old Tile Works is a wonderful rural enterprise in the form of an excellent coffee shop and restaurant - slap bang between the Humber Bridge and the beautiful nature reserve - with an artisan village of six studios for local crafts people to operate from.
The William Blyth Far Ings and Hoe Hill Tile Works continue to produce their range of traditional handmade clay roof tiles about 1,500,000 of them every year!
It’s a cracking place, definitely worthy of a visit if you’re kicking your heels on a Saturday afternoon and fancy a mooch out in the sunshine with the dog.
Soon, an industrial area gave way to an area rich in natural beauty. In 2012, the Harrison family redeveloped part of the former Grade II listed working tile works to create what is known today as The Old Tile Works.
“IT’S CRACKING! WORTHY OF A VISIT IF YOU’RE KICKING YOUR HEELS AT THE WEEKEND AND FANCY A TRIP OUT!”
meet the OWNER
The Old Tile Works services birdwatchers, dog walkers, cyclists, nature photographers, ladies who lunch and magazine editors who don’t, but can make hay by photographing the Humber Bridge in the same visit.
The site’s artisan village is home to a small batch distillery, potter’s shed, furniture maker, needlecraft studio and luxury cake maker among others... it makes a great place to visit after lunch. I was expecting somewhere half decent, having seen photographs of the place, but I was seriously impressed
Harry Harrison’s family took over the William Blyth tile works, founded in 1840, back in 2005. They redeveloped part of the Far Ings site to create The Old Tile Works Coffee Shop, Restaurant and Artisan Village in 2012. Set in 17 acres, the family have just been granted planning permission to create a high end independent garden centre on the site which it’s anticipated will open in 2020 and cover two acres. The former heritage tile works still produces over 1.5 million clay tiles per year between it’s two sites. n

and feel very comfortable offering a recommendation. It helped, too, that having booked an appointment on a day that sleet and misery were forecast, bright sunshine and blue skies attended instead. Accordingly, there were ladies enjoy morning coffee, several happy dogs stretching their legs and people enjoying a visit to the Artisan Village.
There’s a blissfully simple single menu - with just the occasional ad hoc special currently The Old Tile Works is open for daytime service. There are about 20 items on the lunch menus, plus speciality sandwiches served with skin-on fries and homemade coleslaw - ten choices of those - as well as baked potatoes.
It’s a well created menu too, with a couple of really good and proper homemade pies - all crimped shortcrust, stuffed with glossy gravy - as well as variations on salads and curries. Each dish on the menu sounds satisfying but you can tell that dishes are chosen to be easy to prepare freshly during a busy service, so quality is kept high, waiting times short, but the kitchen can still offer its diners lots of choice.
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:17 Page 61
on the MENU FROM THE DAYTIME MENU AT THE OLD TILE WORKS, BARTON-UPON-HUMBER Brunch Full English breakfast with Cumberland pork sausages, thick cut back bacon, black pudding, plum tomato, baked beans, mushrooms, hash brown and free range egg £8.95. Crushed avocado with cherry tomatoes on the vine £7.95.
Lunch Menu Pan fried sea bass with freshly made ratatouille and homemade crusty bread £9.95.
Highlights - beyond the pies - include honey and chilli-poached salmon, pan fried sea bass, a gourmet burger with all of the elements (gherkins; brioche bun; skin-on fries) and proper butcher’s sausage and mash. There’s also a really good Lincolnshire Ploughmans for summer lunchtimes too. Satisfyingly, the Old Tile Works’s bread is homemade, and if you’re stopping by for morning coffee, the cakes - also homemade - are as thick as a mattress and almost as well padded, with buttercream and fruity jam.
A beautiful looking Bakewell Tart sponge cake with almonds and icing nearly made me faint with delight whilst proper small estate coffee, posh teas, local ales and artisan soft drinks like elderflower and raspberry lemonade are all ideal antidotes to tiredness after traipsing around the nature reserves. Having talked with Harry and his partner Leah Worsley about the tile industry and how William Blyth’s handmade clay roof tiles are still very much in demand, it occurred to me that two things are needed.
Firstly, a decent site of interpretation about the area’s tile industry so visitors can find out more about this underpublicised local industry; secondly a place of interpretation for the Humber Bridge. As well as being an extraordinary engineering feat and a hulking piece of brutalist architecture, it has a really fascinating history. I’ve been in the underground ‘foot’ where each single cable descends 156m to secure the 2,220m bridge into the banks of the Humber. It’s fascinating and too many people - especially the 120,000 cars that use it each week - take it for granted.
What will definitely be coming to the area though is a high end garden centre with the potential of spanning approximately two acres. It is one of Harry and Leah’s projects this year to make ready for opening in 2020. The couple will develop the site with an aim to create a destination for visitors with future development ideas like a Victorian orangery on the south facing terrace joining onto the Old Tile Works restaurant. Whatever the couple do with the site in the near future, their plans are reason to visit an already lovely site.
Honey and chilli poached salmon with new potatoes and fresh salad £8.75.
Homemade slow-cooked steak or chicken and thyme pies with shortcrust pastry and seasonal vegetables £10.95. Speciality Sandwiches Smoked salmon and avocado open sandwich with skin-on homemade fries and salad £8.25.
Club sandwich with roast chicken breast and dry-cured bacon, skin-on homemade fries and salad £7.95. NB: Featured dishes are subject to change. n The Old Tile Works is open seven days a week from 8am - 5pm. Old Tile Yard, Far Ings Road, Barton-upon-Humber, DN18 5RF. LOCAL FOOD AND DRINK
HAMPER THE LINCOLNSHIRE
It’s a cliché to state that ours is the county that feeds the country, but how much of that remains a hollow boast and how much truth is there in it? is month we investigate Lincolnshire’s contribution to food and farming, creating our own hamper - a map of the county in food form... ere’s no doubt about it. e future of farming is in crisis and local farmers and food producers need your support. Why? Because in the past 20 years, the cost of producing food has risen by 8.5%, whilst the retail cost of food has risen 22%, but revenues to farmers who grow our food - cereals, vegetables and so on - have actually fallen by 9%. e effects of that will be felt strongly across lincolnshire, a county traditionally known as the county that feeds the country. Across the uK, the food and farming sector is responsible for 3% of gvA (gross value added) income, but in Lincolnshire, the same sector is worth 13% of gvA, meaning Lincolnshire’s economy is more susceptible than other counties to disturbances in the food and farming industry. Next year it’s forecast that Lincolnshire will employ 21,000 people in food and farming; 11% of the working population in the county compared to a national average of 3%. South Holland is the region of Lincolnshire most invested in the sector - it accounts for 31% of Lincolnshire’s overall contribution to farming - but North Kesteven, Boston, East Lindsey and South Kesteven all contribute 11-16% each to the sector too. >>
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:17 Page 66
LOCAL FOOD AND DRINK
>> Lincolnshire has over 2,500,000 hectares of land committed to the farming sector, and grows 16% of the UK’s sugar beet, 13% of its potatoes and 1,709 hectares of wheat - 11% of the UK’s consumption. Supporting Lincolnshire producers and farmers therefore means supporting the county’s economy as a whole, but what’s the best way to do so? 1. Farmers Market & Farm Shops
“Farmers markets and farm shops have simpler supply chains, and can remain competitive with supermarkets...”
Incorrectly considered as more expensive than supermarkets, farmers markets and farm shops have much simpler supply chains, and can therefore remain competitive with larger grocery retailers. A trip out to a farmer’s market or farm shop means you won’t need to trail around several grocers or producers for your weekly shop.
2. Eat the Seasons
A blessing - and a curse - of the supermarket system is the ability to eat, for instance, strawberries in December. With this convenience comes a loss of seasonality, and an increasing reliance on international food chains - plus food miles and post-Brexit price increases - but also a loss of anticipation for when our favourite food comes into season.
Far Left: Alastair Hawken creates his Grantham Gingerbread from an original recipe. Below: Hooray for plum bread! We love Modens plum bread, still baked to the original 1936 recipe!
What’s more satisfying than waiting for St George’s day to enjoy fresh locally grown asparagus or late June for strawberries?
Eating seasonally will help to put the joy and variety back into your diet. 3. Veg Box Schemes
It’s also a misnomer that eating local produce is less convenient than supermarket shopping.
Veg box schemes deliver not only local veg and fruit to your door, but local bread, milk and so on. The milk round is also making a welcome
Below: The Cheese Shop in Louth stocks local produce with the convenience of an in-town location. Alex Albone with John Alvis at Lye Cross Farm in Somerset, who supply the Lincolnshire company with cheese for its crisps. Pocklingtons in Louth, who baked our granary loaf.

return to modern shopping, with companies like Milk & More supporting Lincolnshire companies like Pipers and Belvoir Fruit Farms.
WHAT’S IN OUR HAMPER?
Local produce from across the whole of Lincolnshire...
4. Open Farm & County Shows
Another way to show your support to local suppliers is to visit county shows and Open Farm Sunday on 9th June. It’s a great opportunity to find out about modern farming practices and to educate a younger generation about where their food comes from. 5. Don’t forget the basics...
Two of the most sinned against foods are our household staples, bread and milk. The former is packed with all sorts of preservatives and subject to all sort of industrial processes. Real bread from a real baker is a profound pleasure and with its slower production, remains better for those who believe they are gluten intolerant but are actually just intolerant of mass-bread production. Likewise, choose local milk from nearby farms and enjoy cream at the top of the bottle once more! n 1. Belvoir’s elderflower pressé is created near grantham in the vale of Belvoir with elderflowers hand-harvested every June. e firm creates 1.3m bottles each year, along with other drinks like ginger, lime, raspberry and juniper cordials. 2. ere are now 10 flavours of Pipers crisps, produced at Elsham near Brigg. From the minimalist unsalted variety to chorizo or jalapeño & dill. 3. gingerbread was invented in grantham and is still made in the town to the original 1740 recipe by Alastair and Kerry Hawken. 4. Abbey Parks sell their own jams and chutneys including this delicious strawberry preserve, wonderful as a weekend breakfast treat slathered on toast! 5. give us this day our daily bread, especially if it’s a large granary loaf from Pocklington’s Bakery, nurtured by the Louth firm’s head baker tony. 6. We absolutely adore Boston Sausage, home not just of proper Lincolnshire sausages, but haslet, chine and other local delicacies. 7. Modens Plum Loaf is still made in Spilsby to the original 1936 recipe. 8. Lincoln-based Stokes offers a coffee tasting experience for those who want to know a little more about their morning pick-me-up, with an hour and a half of coffee tuition for £20. eir coffee selection box is £15. 9. Hawkens gingerbread person with warming spice and cloves. 10. Just Jane is a two-year old mature cheddar which also benefits the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre with every truckle purchased. 11. Our preferred Lincolnshire honey is from Bardney’s Croft Apiaries. 12. We absolutely adore East Heckington’s asparagus, as do many of the uK’s top chefs. A short season from April to June, but definitely worth the wait! 13. Abbey Parks gardeners’ Chutney, with tomato and apples. 14. tom Woods Bomber County ale; earthy and malty. n

BARN To the Manor
1 MANOR FARM HAS BEEN LOVED BY ITS OWNERS TRICIA AND ALEX, ESPECIALLY ITS INCREDIBLE COUNTRY VIEWS AND EXPOSED WOODEN BEAMS, BUT AS THEY MOVE ON TO THE NEXT CHAPTER IN THEIR LIVES, THE PROPERTY IS NOW ON THE MARKET WITH FINE & COUNTRY. WILL YOU BE ITS NEXT OWNERS? 77

1 Manor Farm is a beautiful property tucked away in the rolling hills of Lincolnshire. It’s on the market with Fine & Country this month, so we spoke to current owners Tricia and Alex to discover what they loved most about living here. “My husband Alex and I moved to Lincolnshire 10 years ago to support our elderly relatives,” says Tricia. “Having both spent a lot of time here growing up, we weren’t entirely surprised by how much more house we could get for our money here. Initially we got a little carried away and swapped our Surrey rabbit hutch for a beautiful Georgian Manor House.” Above: The living space’s Main: The stunning Quartz open plan style. “After spending a few happy years renovating, the place and despite acquiring a substantial dog, we eventually found it too big for us and too much work to maintain.”
“We always loved Navenby and were delighted to be given the opportunity to buy our current barn conversion. It was love at first sight and we were totally bowled over by its character and sense of light and space.” The property is arranged over three floors. The ground floor houses the main living areas, including the kitchen/breakfast room, dining room and lounge. There is also a utility and cloakroom.
On leaving the lounge, the property splits into an upper ground floor - housing the
“We were bowled over by the property’s character and sense of light and space. The exposed beams and the phenomenal view sealed the deal for us...” master suite - and a lower ground floor accommodating three further double bedrooms and the family bathroom. “Like many other houses in the area, our property is built largely out of Lincolnshire limestone. It is said that one of the previous occupants of the house was a large white horse named Seamus.”
“Unlike some of our previous property purchases, we were relieved to find that the barn did not require too much work, with the development only having been completed a few months prior.” “We particularly loved the tall vaulted ceilings giving a wonderful sense of space and airiness with character exposed oak beams.”
“The quality fitted kitchen has a large Rangemaster, double butler sinks, another veg prep sink in the island, and quartz worktops.”
The upper ground floor in the eaves houses the master suite, comprising a large mezzanine landing area, a spacious bedroom, a generous en suite bathroom, a dressing room and lots 79
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:18 Page 80
of useful eaves storage. The en suite features a modern free standing bath, a shower and, like all the other bathrooms in the house, high quality Roper Rhodes sanitaryware and vanity units. To the front, the barn benefits from a garage and parking for several cars on the gravel driveway.
The crowning glory of this property, and Tricia and Alex’s favourite feature, is the amount of outdoor space and the view to the rear, which is laid to lawn and looks out over the beautiful Trent Valley. “It is said that, on a clear day, the view extends to over 40 miles. There is a large paddock beyond that which is currently used by local grazing horses. We are assured that

the land is protected against development so the barn will benefit from these stunning views for many years to some.”
“With its view of the pretty local church from the living areas and its far-reaching countryside views from the garden, there is no better location in the area and we have been thoroughly spoiled.”
“However, times have moved on for us and so unfortunately we will too. Our elderly relatives are no longer with us and we are looking to relocate back to the south for our last working stint before retirement and a final move to warmer climes.” “So, its back to life in a rabbit hutch again for us for a while and we’ll have fond memories of our time in Lincolnshire and our barn with the view.” n

The Country Set
Creating smart homes in the countryside! Words & Images: Rob Davis.
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:18 Page 87
Celebrate the countryside we live in by filling your home with the best botanical prints, watercolour dogs and contemporary animal prints. Heather Grant of Aitch Interiors presents a few suggestions for joining the country set... If this month’s Lincolnshire Show proves anything, it’s that we’re justifiably proud of our county’s reputation as one of farming excellence, plus our appreciation of the county’s landscapes of rolling Wold or expansive Fen, and of course a love of animals. Across Lincolnshire the county’s homes are being reinvented to reflect this love of the countryside, with both traditional botanical prints, motifs and colours, or with bolder and more contemporary designs like our quirky faux cow hide chair. Based in Wellingore Hall, interior designer Heather Grant has a knack for being able to bring the countryside into any home, with fabrics and soft furnishings, wallcoverings and accessories. Among her services is the ability to create bespoke furniture from a range of base chairs which can be covered in your choice of fabrics from almost any manufacturer. Complement a bespoke chair or sofa with your choice of scatter cushion or window dressing, commission a bespoke piece of timber furniture or enlist Heather to source or transform an existing piece with heritage and chalk-based paint colours.
Whether you’re seeking a single piece for your home, or just a finishing touch, or you’re looking to commission an interior designer to work collaboratively with you to create a new look for your home, Heather has the resources, contacts and skills to create a single piece or bring together a complete look for just a single room or a whole house.
Accessories include the restored and repainted mirror shown left, the quirky Bakelite-ish phone and hunting horn lamp in our main image and the watercolour print scatter cushions in linen with contrast piping featuring various breeds of dog in our photo above.
“I think there are two elements needed to create a really good room,” says Heather. “Firstly there’s inspiration, and then there’s the technical skills and resources needed to bring your project to fruition.”
“With a library of fabric books, advice on colour and the skills needed to create bespoke furnishings, using an interior designer can yield a more successful execution of your project, prevent expensive mistakes and create just the kind of look you’re seeking.” n

Christian Dior
Following on from last month’s Luxury Brand story on Chanel, we delve into the world of Christian Dior and the ‘New Look’ that revived France’s illustrious fashion industry in addition to its many controversies... Words: Tilly Wilkinson.
Christian Dior was born in Granville, a seaside town in Normandy. He was the second of five children born to Madeleine and Maurice Dior, a wealthy fertiliser manufacturer. Dior’s family had hoped he would become a diplomat, but Dior was artistic and wished to be involved in art. In 1928, Dior left school and received money from his father to finance a small art gallery, where he and a friend sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso. Three years later, the family experienced a financial disaster and the gallery had to be closed. Dior went on to be employed by designer Robert Piguet, working alongside big names like Balmain, Dior left Piguet when he was called up for military service. In 1942, when Dior left the army, he joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, where he and Balmain were the primary designers. For the duration of WWII, Dior designed dresses for the wives of Nazi officers and French collaborators. In 1946, Marcel Boussac, a successful entrepreneur known as the richest man in France, invited Dior to design for Philippe et Gaston. Dior refused, wishing to make a fresh start under his own name rather than reviving an old brand. With Boussac’s backing, Dior founded his fashion house.
In 1947, Dior launched his first fashion collection. The show was presented in the salons of the company’s headquarters at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris. This new collection went down in fashion history as the ‘New Look’ (right). The collection was a revolutionary era for women in the 40s, credited with having revived the fashion
industry of France. Its silhouette was characterised by a small, nipped-in waist and a full skirt falling below mid-calf length, which emphasised the bust and hips. It showcased stereotypically feminine designs in contrast to the popular fashions of wartime. Dior retained some masculine aspects as they continued to hold popularity through the 1940s, but he wanted to include more feminine style. The full-skirted silhouette influenced other fashion designers well into the 1950s, and Dior gained a number of prominent clients from Hollywood and the European aristocracy. It was embraced by stylish women such as Princess Margaret. It’s still influencing designers now from Miuccia Prada to Vivienne Westwood.
However, not everyone was pleased with the New Look. Some considered the amount of material to be wasteful, especially after years of cloth rationing. Feminists were outraged, feeling that these corseted designs were restrictive and regressive, and that they took away a woman’s independence. Dior went on to revolutionise the perfumery industry with the launch of the Miss Dior parfum. In 1949, the ‘Diorama’ perfume was released and the New Look line alone made a profit of 12.7 million Francs. By the end of the year, Dior fashions made up 75% of Paris’s fashion exports and 5% of France’s total export revenue.
In 1950, Jacques Rouët, the general manager of Dior, devised a licensing program to place the now-renowned name of ‘Christian Dior’ visibly on a variety of luxury goods. It was placed on neckties, furs, hats, gloves, handbags, jewellery, lingerie, and scarves. Licensing became a very profitable move recognised globally and all couture houses followed suit. By the mid-1950s, the House of Dior operated a well-respected fashion empire. >>
ree ings You Didn’t Know About Christian Dior... HUMBLE BEGINNINGS He was born the second of five children to a wealthy family, but after the Great Depression and the collapse of his father’s business, Dior supported himself by selling fashion illustrations worth 10 cents each.

A HOMAGE TO HIS SISTER Dior’s younger sister Catherine was a member of the French Resistance sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. She was released and Christian paid homage to her by naming his debut fragrance Miss Dior.
A MYSTERIOUS DEATH Some reports say Dior died of a heart attack after choking on a fish bone, while one of Dior’s acquaintances rumoured that it was caused by a strenuous sexual encounter. The exact circumstances of his death are still unknown.

>> Dior launched more highly successful fashion lines between the 1954 and 1957, although none came close to the profound effect of the New Look. 100,000 garments had been sold by Dior’s 10th anniversary in 1956. Christian Dior appeared on the cover of TIME magazine in 1957, but sadly the designer died soon afterwards from a third heart attack on 24th October 1957.
His death left the House of Dior in chaos, and general manager Jacques Rouët considered shutting down operation worldwide. This possibility was not received graciously the Maison Dior was too important to France’s financial stability to allow such an action - so Rouët promoted 21 year old Yves Saint-Laurent to Artistic Director. Laurent was picked out by Dior himself for the position of the first ever and only Head Assistant.
The clothes were as meticulously made and perfectly proportioned as Dior’s in the same exquisite fabrics, but the young designer made them softer, lighter and easier to wear. Saint Laurent was hailed as a national hero. Emboldened by his success, his designs became more daring, culminating in the 1960 Beat Look. His 1960 bohemian look was harshly criticized. Marcel Boussac was furious, so when Saint Laurent was called up to join the French army, Dior management raised no objection.
Laurent was replaced by Marc Bohan in late 1960. Bohan instilled his conservative style on the collections and they were very well esteemed. The Christian Dior Cosmetics business was born in 1969 and the Christian Dior Homme clothing line was created in 1970. Dior graced the bodies of royalty for the wedding of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana.
But in 1978, the Boussac Group filed for bankruptcy. Bernard Arnault purchased Christian Dior for ‘one symbolic franc’ in 1984. Operations changed for the better under Arnault. Italian Gianfranco Ferré replaced Bohan as head designer in 1989. The first non-Frenchman, Ferré left behind Dior associations of flirtation and romance, introducing concepts and styles described as refined, sober and strict. 1990 revenue for 94
“Christian Dior’s designer John Galliano was famed for drawing attention to the brand through ‘porn chic’ ads soon used by other designers...”
Dior was $129.3 million Arnault opted ‘for quality and exclusivity over quantity and accessibility,’ reducing licensing. Under the influence of Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, CEO Arnault appointed British designer John Galliano to replace Gianfranco Ferré in 1997. This choice of a British designer, again instead of a French one, is said to have ‘ruffled French feathers.’ Arnault even stated he ‘would have preferred a Frenchman, but talent has no nationality.’
While other brands in the 1990s, notably Gucci, had resorted to porn chic as a means to draw attention, Dior ads had such an impact that porn chic became a trend in most fashion ads. Galliano had revolutionised Dior more through his advertising campaigns than through his designs. The designer didn’t have as much success in the 21st Century. In 2011, the House of Dior
was in scandal after accusations of John Galliano making anti-Semitic remarks made international headlines. He had landed the company in a public relations nightmare. Galliano was fired in March and the presentation of his latest collection went ahead without him. Before the start of the show, chief executive Sydney Toledano gave a sentimental speech on the values of Christian Dior and alluded to the family’s ties to the Holocaust (Dior’s sister Catherine was a member of the French Resistance, captured and sent to a concentration camp until her liberation in 1945).
The company appointed Bill Gaytten as head designer interim in absence of artistic director. Gaytten had worked under Galliano for Dior and for the John Galliano label. The first collection under Gaytten’s management was presented in July and was received with mainly negative reviews. During its 13-month period of having no artistic director, Dior began undergoing subtle changes in its designs as the influence of the theatrical and flamboyant Galliano faded. Belgian designer Raf Simons was announced as the new artistic director. Simons was known for his minimalist designs, and this contrasted against the dramatic previous designs under Galliano.

To emphasize the appropriate choice of Simons as the right designer, the company made comparisons between Simons and Christian Dior.
Reportedly, Bernard Arnault was keen to move Dior from the Galliano years. Simons spent much time in the Dior archives and familiarising himself with haute-couture. Simons was then scheduled to debut his designs in July.
The company referenced the start of a new Dior through the work of Simons ‘wiping the slate clean and starting again from scratch.’ The designer’s collection harkened back to Dior’s post-WWII designs. While previous runway presentations under Galliano were held at the Musée Rodin,
Simons’s show was held at a private residence near the Arc de Triomphe, with the address only disclosed to very important people exclusively invited.
This included Azzedine Alaïa, Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Princess Charlene of Monaco, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence. Live satellite feed of the show was provided. In January 2013, an extensive two year restoration programme began at Belvoir with the clearance of over 500 acres of woodland. At the same time, an amazing discovery was made in the Castle archives; a set of landscaping plans drawn up in 1780 by Capability Brown, which were thought to have been lost in the fire of 1816. 250 years after they were originally conceived, the current Duchess of Rutland has finally brought these plans to fruition, aided by her team of dedicated employees and volunteers. WEDDINGS
American Dream
Whirlwind romances are usually only found in novels and films but Chris and Katie’s story is a rare example of true love and some real old fashion male chivalry... with Stamford a magnificent backdrop to Katie’s special day! Photographer: Dottie Photography, 01945 773368, www.dottiephotography.co.uk.
This month’s couple met each other when Chris, originally from Manchester, was transferred to the same office as Katie when they were both working for Park West Gallery, Katie as an Art Dealer and Chris as Head of Publishing. Katie’s friend Jennifer also works for the company but over in Texas and Chris had worked alongside her too. “Jennifer and I share the same birthday and we have always spent it together, ever since we’ve been friends,” Katie tells me.
WEDDING SUPPLIERS KATIE & CHRIS MORGAN
With some confidence, Chris had already asked Katie’s father for permission before the holiday and he’d been on the Burghley website and so they returned home to a wedding brochure sent from Kara, Events Manager at Burghley.
“Before our holiday we actually found Burghley and I couldn’t believe you could get married there,” says Katie. “We’d been doing some Googling and I was saying maybe we should look for somewhere smaller
“We wanted it to be quintessentially British because half of the guests were coming from the U.S. and some of them had never been to England before.
We thought it would be great to have almost a historical British banquet, but with a ‘Marie Antoinette meets Dracula feel,” says Katie. The fabulous Kara totally understood Katie’s vision and the planning began!
A very forward thinking Chris decided his first date would be to fly Katie over to Texas for her birthday so that she could spend it with Jennifer. “I was a little bit worried he’d have expectations but he was the perfect gent and picked me up for dinner and dropped me back home after. It must be a British thing, it was perfect.” After that ridiculously impressive first date, the pair were living together just two months later and Chris proposed to Katie in the Bahamas shortly after. “We’d been together almost a year at this stage, and before he asked me,” Katie says, “Chris asked if I’d want to get married in England and I replied ‘yes let’s get married in a castle!’”
but I fell in love with Burghley’s history.” Coming from a historically knowledgeable background, Katie is the sort of person who is exceedingly good at research. After finding out that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited during their honeymoon, Katie was sold; it had to be Burghley.
“I had this team of incredible women working with me, it was amazing,” and the photos really speak for themselves. Captured by Dottie Photography, Katie puts the beautiful images down to Dottie’s pure talent.

The stunning wedding dress was a custom design that Katie and her mother designed themselves after studying a lot of historical photos.
The original dress is an Inbal Dror design but the veil, skirt and sleeve attachments were designed by Katie and the Ever After Boutique in Miami and later constructed over two weeks by four talented ateliers at Miami Atelier. It took two giant body bags to get the dress onto their Business Class flight to the UK. “If I could give anyone a tip it’s this,” laughs Katie.
“If you want to be taken care of, present the flight attendants with a box of really good chocolates. My dress had its own closet!” The bridesmaids also ended up wearing 117

“I told Kara I wanted ‘Marie Antoinette meets Dracula...’ as of our US guests had never been to England before!” cream coloured dresses after many trials and tribulations over colour choice. “Because I’m originally from Detroit, I looked back at Henry Ford’s wedding photos,” says Katie, “The bridesmaids were wearing these amazing sashes with flowers adorning them, so after discussing it with the florist at Pollen Design she managed to recreate it!”
The marvellous cake is printed with Burghley’s very own Heaven Room ceiling artwork thanks entirely to Couture Cakes. The monogram she had designed is because of Marie Antoinette’s ‘M’ on her cake and so Katie inspired Dotty Creations and our cake artist to do the same. As for tips? Katie says: “We weren’t sure whether to have the fireworks at the end of the evening because they seemed a bit extravagant, but in the end we just went for it and honestly, it’s been the highlight of my life and I can’t even remember how much it cost.”
The happy couple are living together in Miami and Katie is expecting their first child, a baby boy, in October. You’ll find Katie updating her blog, www.dontburndinner.com after retiring from being an Arts Dealer to be a full time housewife and prepare for being a Mother. They hope to return to Stamford in the future, “We had such a lovely time staying at The George in Stamford, we can’t wait to go back,” I’m sure The George would love to have them back too. By pure coincidence, Chris’s brother is now living in Stamford. He moved there just before the wedding. Can anyone resist Stamford’s charm, we wonder? n 118

WEDDING THEMES
INSPIRATION FOR A
BOTANICAL
WEDDING Perfect for a summer wedding in a rural county such as ours... taking botanical inspiration for your wedding with a palette of fresh mint and sage greens will help you create a wedding that’s naturally beautiful...! Some sage advice for those planning a wedding... incorporate some mint, sea or sage greens into your big day. They work extremely well as part of a botanical or woodland theme, perfect for the area’s rustic weddings.
Combine them with rough-sawn timber signs and blackboards directing guests to your wedding, hay bales and hessian table plans for rustic looking weddings with big bushy bouquets of eucalyptus or gypsophila for rustic looking summer weddings.
Alternatively, you can glam up green with watercolour botanical invites backed by simple cream, and tables that have shiny slivers of copper hues to them. In the case of the later, you could even use a stronger green shade and create a dark sophisticated look with bright white Old English roses in your bouquet and straight-sided white cakes with simple elegant sage ribbons. Alan Hannah provides our white A-line wedding dress, and is also the designer of our sage bridesmaids’ dresses. n

PETERS’ DRY CLEANERS
CONVENIENCE FOR
COMMUTERS We’re living busier lives than ever, so for those who commute into the city, Peters’ Cleaners and Moores Country & Commuting are offering the ultimate in convenience...
Time is a precious commodity for many people these days, but even more so when you spend your time commuting back and forth for work. What if you could maximise the hours you spend gazing out of the window of a train knowing that as you commute to London for work or enjoy a trip for leisure purposes, your dry cleaning or laundry is being carefully cleaned and pressed ready for collection at your convenience?
It’s exactly that idea Vicky Whiter hit upon after getting fed up of her own commuting misery whilst working as an International Business Development Manager in the city. That’s why, in 2016 having returned to her native Stamford, Vicky took over Peters’ Cleaners and partnered with Moores Country & Commuting to create an automated DIY drop-off and collection point.
“I’ve lost dry cleaning during my commute, or returned to it on the train to find other commuters have dumped bags and suitcases on my neatly pressed laundry. It’s a hassle carrying it around, fitting in drop offs and collections in between trying to catch a train and paying London prices for dry cleaning. That’s why our system is so much better.” >> 130

>> Vicky’s automated system allows customers to deposit their clothing in a bag with a membership card through a drop-off hatch. Items are then collected by Peters’ Cleaners staff. They’re laundered, returned to the unit and stored securely, accessed via a barcoded membership card with three cards supplied to customers at a time. The cards are scanned to release the pick-up door, with clothing returned on a hanger.
Not only is the service more convenient for commuters, clients also take advantage of the skills and experience of a firm established since 1963 who can provide dry cleaning, wet cleaning, stain removal and pressing.
The system is ideal for delicate garments, shirts, or anything than can be placed onto a hanger. With both standard and express services available, the 13-strong team clean around 25,000 shirts a year alone, and some

“Customer experience and delivering a really good service will ensure our customers are happy to return time and time again!” members of the team have been bringing their expertise to the firm for over 30 years.
“Customer experience and delivering a really good service is more important than ever,” says Vicky. “To find and train really good people takes time, but it’s an investment in the business because the right people professional and committed to delivering great service - will help to ensure your customers are happy to return time and again.” “As an independent company, not a chain, we can be more responsive to customers’ needs. It’s an approach which has been validated by a Best Customer Service Award
and a Best Independent Retailer Award in 2018. The High Street is enduring difficult trading conditions, so it’s important to offer convenience as well as a really good service, and to segue that into someone’s daily routine will help to make your customers’ lives easy.”
“We’ve managed to increase revenue by 40% and with a new service that provides 24/7 convenience, we believe that commuters are going to be even better accommodated. It’s also set to be very popular with shift workers, plus, adjacent to Waitrose, shoppers can also fit their laundry and dry cleaning into their grocery shopping routine.”
Peters’ Cleaners is located at Peterborough Station, adjacent to Moores Country & Commuter, a full-service estate agency offering a range of properties under its Country & Commuting and Equestrian brands. “We pride ourselves on being a family owned (husband and wife) run business; we are wholly independent – not a franchise or owned by a Building Society,” says Vernon Moore. “Our local office directors are all born and bred in the area and we dare not calculate their combined years of experience in local agency! We will always aim to get our vendors the best possible price, in the best timescale, in a professional manner!” n For more information on Peters’ Cleaners, based at Peterborough, Stamford and Crowland, call 01733 562997 or see www.peterscleaners.co.uk. “They have looked and felt like my
own teeth” Implant treatment at the Dental Health Centre in Grantham has changed our patient’s life. “My teeth are actually better now than they were before the implant and crown! From the very start they have looked and felt like my own teeth, I’m over the moon.” J.S. near Grantham
134
Dr Colin Sutton, principal dentist consulting with a patient.
I was faced with the prospect of needing a dental implant and had lost confidence in my own dentist. It was clear to me from the information provided by the Dental Health Centre that Colin Sutton is a long established professional in this specialised field. Not wanting to take any further chances with my treatment I chose them and was impressed from the very outset.
Mr Sutton assured me he would be able to give me an implant and also carry out further treatment, which my own dentist said wasn’t possible. My husband came with me to the first appointment and he too was impressed.
Work carried out by my dentist meant that a previously filled tooth had to be removed. Having looked after my teeth all my life this was a huge shock to me and I felt if I needed to pay for this treatment privately, I want someone extremely competent and highly experienced.
The implant is at the side of my mouth and the crown is nearer the front. I was a bit worried that the crown would be obvious as some of my others have a line near the gum. But you wouldn’t know I’d had any treatment. They look superb.
I was initially nervous but plucked up the courage to give them a call. I thought it was brilliant that they could give me an appointment the same week.
My teeth are actually better now than they were before the implant and crown! From the very start they have looked and felt like my own teeth, I’m over the moon.
The minute I walked through the door at the Dental Health Centre I knew I had made the right choice. Everyone is totally professional, and I have to mention Paula and Tracey as they are absolutely amazing. I didn’t feel uneasy – I felt like I was in very good hands.
I opted for 0% finance, which has helped. The quality of the treatment and the professionalism of the team have made my treatment well worth the price. I feel so confident with my teeth now and I would recommend the Dental Health Centre to anyone.
The implant treatment was absolutely fine, and all my treatment was on schedule as explained initially. I was never in any pain and had no reason to feel fearful.

FITZWILLIAM HOSPITAL
NO PAIN, JuSt gAIN Bad posture, sedentary lifestyles and an overburdened healthcare infrastructure have all contributed to an epidemic of chronic musculoskeletal pain. But the answer is rarely invasive operations. Nobody needs to live a life of pain, says Consultant Spinal Surgeon and pain expert Mr Dimpu Bhagawati of Ramsay Healthcare’s Fitzwilliam Hospital & Boston West Hospital... “It’s miserable. It’s just really... awful.” Dimpu Bhagawati is demonstrating what happens to the spine when the spongy discs of tissue in our backs - which act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae - bulge and cause chronic pain, or just weaken with age. “I have patients coming to see me who are in terrible pain, and they’re always surprised just how many options there are available to us to make them more comfortable.”
“More than half of the patients I see are experiencing chronic axial pain - in the back or sides, like sciatica whilst half are experiencing neuropathic pain - pain in their shoulders, legs or arms, for example.”
Dimpu estimates that over 90% of patients can be treated conservatively with postural advice or physiotherapy. A further 8% of patients have their pain alleviated with injections of anaesthetic or steroids, with most being successfully treated and discharged afterwards. Only 2% of the patients the consultant sees end up having an operation such as most fear when they put off seeking treatment. Only 2% of the patients the consultant sees end up having an operation such as most fear when they put off seeking treatment... and only then under Dimpu’s patient-led philosophy of informing, enfranchising and taking his lead from his patients - ‘no decisions about me, without me.’ The message, then, is simple. There’s no need to live with pain. Pressures within the NHS healthcare system mean that fewer treatments are available with patients waiting longer. For patient’s wishing to self-fund or use their medical insurance, consultants can arrange diagnosis, manual care pathways such as physiotherapy or procedures like pain relieving injections where appropriate.
Private healthcare such as that from Ramsay Health Care’s Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough or its Boston West facility means accessing independent healthcare via self-pay, insurance-funded services and the NHS’s Choose & Book scheme means immediate advice is available without a patient having to live with chronic pain.
Peterborough’s Fitzwilliam Hospital.
It’s a myth that private healthcare simply means walking into a hospital and asking for a specific operation. In fact, consultants like Dimpu can arrange diagnosis, manual care pathways such as physiotherapy at The Fitzwilliam’s own physio studio, advice or procedures like pain relieving injections where appropriate. The hospital’s consultants work alongside NHS consultants and a patient can combine treatment or diagnostic procedures (such as MRI and CT scans) from both their NHS doctor and independent providers.
“Our physiotherapy services can work alongside consultants to ensure patients remain in control of their treatments,” says Senior Physiothearpy Manager Kate Smalley. “We set sustainable health goals, with sessions and programmes tailored to the individual. People are often surprised by how much they’re listened to, and how personal their care is.” The number of people suffering from back and neck pain increased by 12% last year, with 44% of the population now affected. An older population, sedentary lifestyles, driving and office-based professions mean more people than ever before are living in unnecessary pain when consultant led-healthcare with clinicians like Dimpu Bhagawati and Kate Smalley can give patients their lives back... n

PRIVATE HEALTHCARE WITH AVICENNA
DR HANY ELMADBOUH, SENIOR CONSULTANT, AT AVICENNA CLINIC EXPLAINS GOLFER’S ELBOW, ALSO KNOWN AS MEDICAL EPICONDYLITIS
Golfer's elbow, also known as medical epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain where the tendons of the forearm muscles attach to the bony bump, the medial epicondyle, on the inside of the elbow. A tendon is a tough cord of tissue that connects muscles to bones. These groups of muscles bend the wrist toward the palm and twist the wrist and get damaged by repeated and or excessive force. The degeneration of the tendons results in pain.
Golfer’s elbow typically occurs in the fourth through sixth decades of life, the peak working years, and equally affects men and women. It is caused by repeated and or excessive force used to bend the wrist toward the palm and twisting of the wrist. This can happen for example when swinging a golf club but also in other sports such as weightlifting and bowling. It is also commonly found in occupational settings, especially those involving repetitive forceful grip, manual handling of loads or exposure to constant vibratory forces. For example, it is common among painters plumbers, cooks and construction workers. Golfer's elbow is common in those performing repetitive activity at least two hours a day, those who are obese and smokers. The end result of such forcible activities is micro-truama and degeneration of the tendons resulting in pain. 140
The pain of golfer's elbow can come on suddenly or gradually and typically persistent on the medial-sided elbow and exacerbated by daily activities. The pain can be felt when bending the wrist toward the palm against resistance, or when squeezing a rubber ball. The pain may radiate down the inside of the forearm and may be associated with stiffness of the elbow, weakness of the grasp and numbness or tingling that radiate usually to the ring and little fingers.
The diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination with pain or tenderness when the tendons are gently pressed over the inside of the elbow. Also, the pain is reproduced on flexion of the wrist against resistance. Further confirmation of the diagnosis could be obtained by ultrasound and in some cases MRI examinations which show the status of the tendons and assess for the presence of tendons tear. This last finding may have impact on how the condition is treated. Treatment of golfer elbow includes ice pack application and anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen to alleviate pain. Once pain subsided, physiotherapy including stretching and strengthening exercises is usually initiated. Some cases may benefit from cortisone injection usually performed with ultrasound guidance for accuracy while
other cases may respond to non-traditional therapies such as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) or platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection. If the pain continues after 6 to 12 months of rest and conservative treatment, surgery may be recommended. The exception to this time limit is the elite athlete with definitive tendon disruption appreciable on MRI, then surgery may be performed at an early stage of the disease. The surgery involves debridement of the degenerative tendons. To prevent recurrence, it is important to return to activity gradually, to exercise to strengthen the forearm muscles, stretch before activity, use the right equipments and proper lifting techniques and to rest at the first sign of pain.
At Avicenna Clinic, we have a range of specialist consultants, operating theatre for surgical procedures and superior in-house imaging facilities including state-of-the-art MRI, ultrasound and X-ray scanning equipment. We can assess and diagnose all cases of acute and chronic pain quickly and deliver comprehensive treatment plans tailored to you. n To book a consultation or for more information on treating your pain and explore the other available services to help you, contact Avicenna Clinic on 0330 2020597 or see avicennaclinic.com. ADVERTORIAL
SUFFER FROM ACHES & PAINS? Make MBST your first step on the road to recovery…
MBST therapy is a pioneering form of treatment for musculoskeletal problems. We use MRT technology to communicate with the affected cartilage, bone, ligament, tendon and muscle cells and encourage
them to regrow.
This method offers long-term pain relief and improved mobility for numerous afflictions, including: • Osteoarthritis • Osteoporosis
• Intervertebral disc problems • Sports injuries
• General wear and tear that happens over time. 142
Once the affected area or injury has received enough MBST treatment, the cells will
continue to grow and develop by themselves. HOW DOES IT WORK?
MBST is similar to MRI technology (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), but instead of using magnetic resonance (MRT) to generate images of the body, MBST uses magnetic resonance (MRT) to stimulate specific cells at a molecular level, encouraging the degenerated cells to regenerate more quickly, so as to better replace the lost ones. This non-intrusive treatment offers both anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, which enables a comfortable, uncomplicated
and sustainable treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, without the need for surgery.
Your closest health professional providing MBST is Clare House Physiotherapy Tinwell, Rutland. 01780 238 084.

Miscellany
Welcome to Miscellany. This feature in Lincolnshire Pride includes snippets of information you may not have known, book reviews, county history and interesting locals. Enjoy! NEW yORK
Lincoln’s input on New York’s Statue of Liberty...
It’s widely known that Lincoln’s engineering heritage is certainly something to boast. We invented the tank, the School of Engineering in Lincoln was the first new engineering school in the UK for over 20 years and Lincoln was home to the first ever electricity lit factory. However, one fact you may not know is the gas turbine that lights up the Statue of Liberty in New York City was made right here in Lincoln!
Fun Fact: Once upon a time, visitors to the Statue of Liberty could climb all the way up to the torch! Tourists were able to climb up to the precarious perch until 1916, when those privileges were revoked. This was due to worries regarding terrorism and damage to the torch after a bomb exploded on a nearby island.
e Rose: Flower of the Month... Caring for roses is much easier than you think! Anyone can grow them successfully.
First of all, plant your roses in a sunny location with good drainage, fertilise them regularly for impressive flowers, water them evenly to keep the soil moist, prune established rose bushes in
early spring, and watch for diseases like powdery mildew or black spot. Fun Fact: Roses are old plants. One of the oldest fossils of roses dates back from 35 million years ago.
e Lincolnshire Show
A look back through the past 150 years...
The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society was formed in 1869. The first event the group held was the Lincoln Show. Before the show settled at its current home - the Showground - it travelled the county stopping at some of the main towns. The 76th show in 1959 was the first to be held at the Showground and the cost for
entry was 10 shillings, double the usual cost due to popularity and the creation of two separate entrances; one for stock, the other for the general public. The Lincolnshire Show has only ever been cancelled because of World War 2 and the spread of Foot and Mouth. In the absence of the county show in 2001, the Society planned the Lincolnshire
Food and Gift Fair, an event that still runs today. The Showground invested in building The Epic Centre in 2008, with 3,000 square meters of events space. It’s used 365 days a year and especially at the Show.
In Numbers: Now, the show sees 60,000 visitors, including 3,500 members and over 600 trade stands. Here’s to another 150 years!

MISCELLANY
Magna Carta The famous document
was signed in June in 1215 by King John...
Lincoln is the only place in the world where you can find original copies of both the 1215 Magna Carta and the 1217 Charter of the Forest, one of only two surviving copies.
King John is said to have been forced into its
sealing by rebellious barons with the aim of limiting the power of the monarchy and upholding the rights of the individual, enforcing laws that still exist today. The original Magna Carta can be viewed at Lincoln Castle today.

John Wesley’s Christian Crusade... Thought by many to be the leader of the Methodist movement, John Wesley was born on 28th June 1703...
John Wesley was born in the village of Epworth. His parents gave him a strict upbringing, and he went on to study at Oxford. He went on to become a cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues in today’s religion. Fun Fact: John Wesley rode far enough on horse back to circle the Earth 10 times! He rode a total of 250,000 miles, convinced that it was important for him to personally spread the gospel.

Blue Plaque of the Month: Thomas Paine, Political Writer... Thomas Paine, an English-born American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding
Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution and in-
spired the patriots in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. Historian Saul K Padover described him as a corsetmaker by
trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination. He stayed at the George Hotel in Grantham while he was an
Excise Officer from 1762 to 1764. He died in June. Only six people attended his funeral; he was ostracised for ridiculing Christianity.

ROAR FOUR BY
Land Rover’s style icon, the Velar, has a new flagship version designed to breathe fire with its 5.0V8 supercharged engine... is this the fastest way to complete the school run?
Land Rover’s ranks are swelling all the time. Since the 1980s their range has grown to include not just a utilitarian Defender and luxurious Range Rover, but a rugged Discovery, the smaller Freelander - now badged Discovery Sport, the road focused-Range Rover Sport and the small but perfectly popular Evoque. The most recent addition to the family has been the Range Rover Velar. Ostensibly a halfway point between the more compact Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, it was billed upon its release as a more stylised SUV. Its unique selling point is set to be eroded somewhat by its siblings over the coming years as the stylish flourishes that make Velar distinctive ripple through the rest of the range - some touches like the digital dashboard and pop-out door handles have already been adopted by the new Evoque, for example.
For now though, it’s the most modern, stylish and dramatic model in the company’s lineup, and with the launch of a new flagship, SVAutobiography Dynamic, the Velar is set to offer drivers even more drama in a market crowded by other SUVs that look positively dull in comparison. >> 153
Lincs Pride JUNE 203 MANDY.qxp 07/05/2019 11:27 Page 154
>> The nomenclature may be clumsy, but the car is anything but. For your £86,000, the car has a 5.0V8 supercharged engine that can dispatch 60mph in 4.3 seconds and reach 170mph on a track. With 680Nm of torque and 550ps of power, this is a car with some serious muscle, and more than a few upgrades necessary to handle the extra power.
There’s an upgraded braking system, sports tuned electronic differential, upgraded air suspension, a Dynamic driving mode on the transmission, variable active exhaust system, larger air intakes and gigantic 21” wheels.
Commensurate with a flagship, there’s all of the bells and whistles inside, plus the sniff of options like carbon fibre. 154
The Velar is beautiful, and this flagship is a mighty proposition. But for similar money you could opt for a Range Rover Vogue... Being a Land Rover, capability is engineered into the car’s DNA, with a Terrain Response system setting up the car according to the conditions you pre-empt via simple change of the setting.
An automatic gearbox with slick rotary controller and active drivetrain also help to take away all of the decision-making from the driver. Simply floor the throttle and the car will decide for itself where to dispatch the abundance of power according to the demands of the surface.
In isolation the Velar is beautiful, and this flagship is a mighty proposition. You’d expect a ringing endorsement then? Well... possibly. The problem is, for £3,000 less, you can opt for a Range Rover Vogue instead, for £4,000 more, a Vogue SE version. Granted, you’ll lose a few bits of standard equipment, and the engine is a more modest 3.0V6 unit, but... well, it’s a Range Rover. The Velar is lovely, and its flagship certainly impressive, but we think our money would be spend on its bigger brother. n

Four by Furious: The best performance SUVs...
Porsche Cayenne Turbo £99,291: Whilst the Turbo Porsche tops out at about £15,000 more than the Velar, we’ve opted for the flagship of Porsche’s 4x4 range, rather than the forthcoming non-Turbo S version. Its 550ps matches the Land Rover, 60mph is seen off in 3.9 seconds and there’s a 177mph top speed. If style is a consideration, there’s a forthcoming coupé version launching this autumn. You’ll find yourself raiding the options list for reversing cameras, adaptive cruise and four zone climate control, too. n
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio £69,990: If you’re the sort of person who craves something a little different, Alfa Romeo’s flagship version of the Stelvio may appeal. At first glance it look cheap, but you’ll have to raid the options list to get close to the Velar’s standard spec. Electric seats, heated steering wheel, power sunroof, adaptive cruise and red brake calipers are all optional. Still, its 510hp 2.9V7 bi-turbo engine is good for reaching 60mph in 3.9 seconds. n
RANGE ROVER VELAR SVA Price: £86,120.
Motor/Drivetrain: 5.0 V8 Supercharged 550hp petrol.
Performance: 0-60mph 4.3 secs 170mph top speed. Economy: 23mpg (comb).
Equipment: Four zone climate, 20-way electrically adjustable heated massage seats, adaptive cruise, park assist and camera. n
Audi Q8 Vorsprung £82,740: In its 3.0 turbo form, Audi’s Q8 achieves 60mph in 5.9 seconds will carry on to a limited 155mph. An eight speed gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive provide reassuring handling, and 31mpg is decent enough for a car in its class. Range-topping Vorsprung trim provides a panoramic roof, electric front seats, four-zone climate control and power tailgate, a 360° camera and a Bang & Olufsen stereo. n

Morgan’s model is a retro masterpiece A new Morgan is a rare occurrence, and the firm’s Plus Six model brings a hitherto unseen wealth of fancy-pants features to its retro masterpiece...
A new Morgan is not something you see every day. Its last release - the Aero series - was released in 2000 and still featured BMW mechanicals over an ash timber frame. It had a radical design compared to the more traditional looking 4/4 model it sat alongside a car which was launched in 1955 and only just ceased to be sold with the launch of Morgan’s new offering, the Plus Six. What is it? Well, it’s all new. All new. e car is made of 4,000 parts and only 1% of them are shared with the firm’s existing models. Made of metal, albeit retaining a bit of ash in the structure, the car has an all new v6 engine and gearbox created in collaboration with BMW. It’s 2cm longer than its predecessor, but offers 20cm extra legroom and 31% more storage space. Weighing 1,075kg, it’s lighter than a Ford Fiesta.
So, imagine a v6 BMW M-Series engine in a Fiesta, then imagine that Fiesta goes on a diet. en imagine the kind of performance you can expect. Finally, imagine ditching the roof and adding retro styling... that’s what the Morgan is.
Morgan Plus Six, First Edition Price From: £89,995. On Sale: June.
Engine: 2019 BMW 3.0 inline 6-cylinder. Performance: 166mph top speed, 60mph 4.2 seconds
Economy: 38.2mpg.
Of course, Morgans have always been two things; analogue and expensive. e basic Plus Six costs £78,000. With a ‘touring’ hard top it’s £85,000, and ‘First Edition’ models have more standard equipment. Amazingly, every Plus Six has leather seats, air conditioning and power steering, plus an automatic gearbox. First Editions have smarter leather, wood veneer and sun visors. you can choose from 28 exterior colours, 19 hides, seven veneers and so on. Modern, but unmistakably Morgan, this is a great British classic, but one made for a more modern era. Beautiful, individual and wonderfully crafted! n

WOODHALL The Enterprising Women awards celebrated the entrepreneurial successes of women in business across the East Midlands region. Emma Brealey has led the transformation of the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa from an underperforming provincial hotel to being ranked among the top 200 fastest growing companies in the East Midlands. When Emma joined the hotel in April 2010 the business was struggling on a number of fronts and drastic changes were needed to ensure the hotel survived. As a first step on the road to recovery, Emma
