welcome letter
I have lots of passions in life and I’m fortunate to be able to do many of them on a regular basis. I love horse riding, wakeboarding, skiing but I truly can’t survive without writing.
When I saw the opportunity to join the Pride team I thought, ‘This is my dream job!’
I can now call myself Editor of Pride and I couldn’t be happier. The magazine has been taken such good care of by my colleague Rob who will be taking on our fabulous new magazine, Peterborough Pride. I’m thrilled to be working
within my home county; I grew up in Rutland and Stamford, attended Stamford Girls School and I have since bought my home in Ketton!
The area might be small but it is absolutely packed with fascinating places, faces and spaces and at the end of the day, it’s the people who make this magazine. This month we’ve had a chat with local sculptor Theo Gillick about his enthusiasm for beekeeping, visited a stunning silversmith at Burghley House plus all of the much-loved regulars!

Burghley’s box office now open... WORLD CLASS EVENTING FIXTURE TAKES PLACE FROM 30th AUGUST 2018
STAMFORD The Box Office for the area’s most prestigious sporting events, the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, which takes place from 30th August to 2nd September is open now, and for those looking to get maximum value for money, there has never been a better time to book. Placing online bookings should be easier than ever this year, with a new improved system designed to streamline the booking process. Those preferring to book by telephone will find the box office opening hours have been extended to include weekends. There are attractive discounts on a range of tickets including memberships, caravan memberships and coach passes if purchased in advance. Air ambulance service praised for saving lives in the sky...
STAMFORD & RUTLAND The team behind county’s air ambulance service has been praised by the Care Quality Commission. The service completed 800 missions in 2017, with each one costing in excess of £1,700. Inspectors rated the service as ‘excellent,’ for the Children’s Air Ambulance, the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland service too. High Sheriff
Margaret Jarron (above, third from right) was officially sworn in recently as Rutland’s new High Sheriff at a ceremony held at Oakham Castle.
Civic dignitaries enjoyed a reception before a welcome prayer by the Very Revd., Christopher Armstrong, Chaplain to the outgoing High Sheriff Craig Mitchell. Craig reflected on his time in the role, before Susan was sworn
in and promised to uphold the position. The unpaid non-political office will be undertaken by Susan in 2018/2019 with a number of local charities supported, including Warning Zone, the area’s life skills and children safeguarding charity. 10th June will see an Open Garden event in Edith Weston, whilst 11th June’s Community
Service at All Saints Church will celebrate voluntary work in Rutland and the area’s Friends of Cancer Research will host a lunch and talk at Greetham Valley Golf Club on 12th June. Next month the office of High Sheriff will also host an Evening Osprey Cruise on the Rutland Belle on 10th and 12th July. n

THE COST OF ACCEPTING SECOND BEST Kate Vincent, professional property finder for Garrington, explains why recent increases to Stamp Duty over the past few years, means that making a property buying mistake is a costly blunder most of us should avoid Many homebuyers in Rutland and Stamford are increasingly frustrated with the state of the current property market. There really is very little for sale.
may not be truly aware of how expensive Stamp Duty (SDLT) is these days. Paying it once is painful, a second time after making a buying mistake is beyond belief.
In these vexing conditions, it is sometimes tempting just to settle for one of the best but not ideal purchasing options and hope that it serves your needs. Whilst a level of compromise is always required during a property search, there is an increasing risk that taking second best could trigger the need to move again in a short space of time. Unless you are extremely rich and have money to burn (which the majority don’t) getting it wrong and moving home frequently becomes a very expensive hobby!
Paying for help is an investment rather than a cost
A quick review of Rightmove reveals that at the time of writing, there is only sixty seven properties priced over £500,000 including a handful priced at between two and three million pounds. Further analysis shows that eighteen of the properties have been on the market for over six months suggesting that there is either something wrong with them or are overpriced – leaving a mere forty nine properties in this wide price band for buyers to choose from.

Most people know that buying and selling property is an expensive game, but unless you have bought a property recently, you

The 2018 Rutland Show held at the Rutland Showground, Oakham on Sunday 3rd June has something for the whole family. It’s a wonderful day out with fabulous displays, entertainment and local food and drink.
Boasting hundreds of unique trade stands alongside livestock, equine and poultry exhibitors, the Rutland Show is a showcase for farming, countryside and rural life that brings together the very best of Rutland with animals, food, shopping, fun and excitement.
This year, you will be able to watch the delightful Shetland Pony Grand National, sponsored, quite charmingly, by Porsche.
There will also be the return of the fast and furious British Scurry & Trials Driving competition.
Prince Philip used to compete at British Driving competitions, it’s a unique sports that is sure to present plenty of thrills and hopefully not too many spills.
Visitors can also watch the skilful BMX bike display, marvel at the magnificent Heavy Horses, enjoy the tractor pulling competition, the hilarious sheep show, our extended craft fair, live music and so much more.

A Great Family Country Day Out at Blaston Show: Sunday 24th June... This year’s ever popular Blaston Show takes place on Sunday 24th June, and is again set to be a perfect family day out.
Native breeds of cattle, such as Hereford and Lincoln Red will be on show, together with a selection of prime stock cattle. There is also a Sheep & Lamb Show with a huge array of classes.
Held in Slawston, between Market Harborough and Uppingham, it attracts exhibitors and spectators from across the region. There is something to appeal to all family members, from children’s entertainment to vintage cars and tractors, cutting edge farming technology, diverse shopping outlets and animals – not to mention an array of food and drink outlets. Each year more than 100 dogs take part in the Dog Show. Catering for Kennel Club registered and Heinz 57 breeds, both working dogs and family pets can put their best paw forward.
Entrance costs £15 per car and gates open at 8am. A significant proportion of the money raised on the day will be given to local charities, with Rainbows hospice for children and young people and VASL this year’s principal beneficiaries. Meanwhile, for equestrians Blaston Show offers everything from showjumping, showing and in-hand classes to the ever popular ‘Family Horse or Pony.’ This year there are new classes for younger riders and the heavy horses will return to delight the crowds.

2. Hills & Holes
Gather up the dogs, children or grandchildren and make your way to Barnack’s Hills and Holes this month. This extraordinary nature site rises up from the rubble of a medieval limestone quarry and is one of the only surviving limestone grasslands in Cambridgeshire. Due to these warm, well-drained soils, the grassy slopes are home to a profusion of wild flowers and butterflies. This led to the site’s designation as a Special Area for Conservation in 2002 to protect the orchid rich grassland. n www.fbhh.org.uk
3. Burghley House
Burghley is a place that offers so much, it’s even tricky for people who live on the doorstep to take it all in. The gardens and parkland cover miles and within this area you can explore The Gardens of Surprise, The Sculpture Garden, South Gardens and The Deer Park. This year, the Sculpture Exhibition has been named ‘Otherworldly’ and it explores the surreal, strange, magical, cosmic and interplanetary. Did you watch The Randox Health Grand National this year? Perhaps you even won some money on Tiger Roll, the brave little horse who won. During the prize giving, you’ll have noticed the stunning trophy but did you give it more thought than, ‘what a work of art that is, good on that jockey Davy Russell he rode beautifully;’ did it occur to you that those perfectly sculpted helix curves were made by hand?
The next day, that same trophy is all over the newspapers being kissed, held in the air and shown to the world but what you may not
know, is that very trophy and last year’s was designed by a silversmith at Burghley House.
It’s unusual for the same designer to design The Randox Health Grand National trophy but this was the case for Shannon O’Neill. Originally coming from Liverpool, Shannon found herself at Burghley House after a period of her life where you could say she was hiding from her true passion. “Every time I came close to working for myself I would jump at a new job opportunity,” says Shannon who boasts a very impressive CV in the world of animation. >>

>> Under the watchful eye of Burghley’s Barry Witmond, who has been a self-employed silversmith on the premises for almost 30 years. Shannon was mentored, moulded and Barry says slightly manipulated into taking back up a craft she hadn’t laid hands on for almost four years.
It’s not difficult to see how Shannon was diverted down a different path several times. After completing a design led education, she found herself working on a Tim Burton animation, a relatively well paid extraordinary first job. “I fell into animation and fell in love with the people,” says Shannon. After this she worked on Tim Burton’s films, as the head of mechanics and in animation, specifically all while partying hard and working even harder in the big smoke. But still, even with London’s magnetic force of fun, in the back of Shannon’s mind she was thinking about silver. The animation took off and Shannon’s next position was ‘more of a 9-5’ she laughs, in the Cotswolds on the children’s TV cartoon Timmy Time. It was in this period where she started designing again, her hands picking up a skill they knew so well until they were picked up again and thrown into another mad world in Oregon, America.
“I had a wild time, but even when I was at these hot tub parties I’d turn around and think, hang on, am I at the wrong party?” The passion Shannon was no longer feeding haunted her but she just couldn’t see how she could make money as a silversmith, 30

especially on her own. Then along came Barry, the manipulation, the bitter smell of silver cleaning products, a twitch for chasing and a chance to finally take up the dream.
Just as before, Shannon was being handed her dream on a plate but no real financial stability. She was also in contact with animation companies who wanted her on the set of the new Star Wars film after she’d worked with Warner on King Arthur. Shannon threw caution to the wind and stuck with Barry and just two weeks later, Randox Health called saying that she’d been selected; the rest is history! The selection process for the designer is no mean feat. Randox Health begin by contacting

goldsmiths who put together a showcase for them of the contemporary silversmiths they can choose from.
They start with 65 and will be given some sort of silver piece to study by each designer before they whittle this list down to 21.
Sterling Work Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper.
At this stage, they get in touch with each chosen silversmith and ask them to provide an idea; what do they think the trophy should look like? Then, they will choose a final three who will receive the brief and work on a design that meets their requirements.
After this stage, Shannon’s beautiful helix structure stood out and so she had from August to create the trophy from scratch, which is not long at all!
From the design, there are lots of lovely little touches that nod towards Randox Health.
The base of the trophy with their name on it has the drop of blood in the form of the stone. Then of course there’s the stem which is a wonderful spiral helix of DNA to represent the thoroughbred racing lines.
There are little horse shoes within and around the spiral to give the DNA some biological structure; they’ve been carefully positioned to hold onto that mystic Irish luck. When you get up to the bowl you’ll see carvings of brain synapses, fat cells which also replicate champagne bubbles, red blood cells and a magnificent heart beat of a racehorse borders the top of the trophy.
The trophy is Stirling silver and the DNA helix has been gilded in gold. All of these different components help represent what it means for Randox Health to sponsor such a prestigious event. They’re very passionate about what they do and hope that this will transpire into the racing crowd to be more aware of their health options.

This year the area will celebrate 20 years of Rutland Radio, keeping Stamford and Rutland residents up-to-date with news, traffic & weather, and entertaining its audience with a mix of music. The station’s best known presenter is Rob Persani, who found his vocation - and his wife - on air! It’s a rainy day in Oakham. All the way along Melton Road shoppers are shuffling along with umbrellas with heads down and cars are streaming past with embattled wipers furiously trying to keep windscreens clear. The day looks miserable and grey, but secreted in Studio B of Rutland Radio’s premises, the station’s most long-standing presenter Rob Persani and I are nicely insulated from the gloom. Through the glass, we can both see Studio A and Sayeh Stone broadcasting her mid-morning show, having taken over from Rob at 10am. It’s a presenter’s job to be cheerful no matter how gloomy the weather, and to ensure they give all of their listeners the boost we all get from great music, and a familiar voice in the background... and that’s the funny thing about radio.
Despite the weather, the team have another reason to be cheerful given the fact that they’re currently planning a series of celebrations to mark the station’s 20th anniversary, and by extension, marking presenter Rob Persani’s two decades with the station too.
By our reckoning, Rob has racked up 1,152 hours of broadcasts during his time with the station for his breakfast show alone. The presenter lives on the border of Stamford and Rutland and arrives at the studios at about half past five in the morning, roughly half an hour before he’s due on air.
the beds that are played under traffic reports, and so on, as well as the music the station plays. A series of sliders fades in each input, and the presenter can broadcast live feeds from IRN. This big-hitting news network that broadcasts to over 27m people each week and enables Rutland Radio’s news output to leverage the network’s hegemony whilst supplementing their material with their own, more locally relevant news agenda.
What technology can’t provide, though, is the warmth and good humour of a really great presenter, and Rob’s radio persona has been honed over 27 years.

“It’s a really intimate medium,” says Rob. “I think it’s what initially fascinated me about radio and the reason I wanted to work in the industry. Unlike TV, which commands your full attention, radio can be there in the background as you drive along or as you’re sitting in the office.” “You become a sort of surrogate work colleague or the means by which people know when they need to be out of the house in the morning. Radio becomes part of our routine, a sort of social metronome, and that regular voice on the radio becomes a friend.”

The station accounts for over a third of all radio audiences in Stamford and Rutland and that figure is likely to be higher for the breakfast show, which is one of the most popular time slots for any local station. One imagines that it’s a pretty surreal experience, talking into a microphone seemingly to nobody in particular but reaching tens of thousands of people.
Today, technology lends a hand, and binnacles of CD players, MiniDiscs and tape machines have been replaced with a computer system that cues up jingles, ads,
“I was part of a network of about 300 amateur presenters broadcasting on Radio Cracker, over the festive period in 1991 and 1992,” says Rob. “We’d be on air for four weeks at a time and I absolutely loved it.”
“The project raised about £500,000, but also awareness as to the poverty and suffering that were the everyday experience of thousands of those living in Third World countries. It was a really innovative way to support the two charitable beneficiaries, Tearfund and the Oasis Trust, and there are still two surviving stations from the original network.”
Rob’s experience led him to move from his native Staffordshire to pursue a media production degree at Farnborough College, where he became head of news and eventually the station’s controller, and where he held

Rob’s first proper job in radio was in the market town of Alton in rural Hampshire, but he moved to Metro Networks now INRIX to take up a position as traffic reporter for stations in Leicester, Worcester, Coventry and Northampton, as well as working part time presenting and news reading at stations in Wolverhampton and Stoke on Trent. It was in June 1998, though that Rob saw an advert posted by the Lincs FM group seeking new presenters for a radio station they were creating that would serve the people of Rutland and Stamford, providing entertainment and local news. “The group was established in 1991, and Lincs FM was the original station. During the mid-1990s the government wanted to encourage the creation of more local radio stations, and licenses for different areas were being advertised.” 36
“At the same time as the group made a bid for Hinckley, Worksop and North East Lincolnshire’s areas, we put in a bid for this area’s licence too, and launched those stations, Fosseway Radio, Trax FM and Compass FM, as well as Rutland Radio.”
“It was a time of really rapid expansion, and a rush to begin broadcasting in time for Christmas 1998, to give the area a sort of Christmas present!”
“For the first couple of months we were broadcasting from a portacabin but thankfully we managed to create some more permanent studios! Today’s technology makes it easier for us to get out and about. We can broadcast from anywhere - Uppingham’s Fatstock or the Rutland Show - as long as we can get a decent internet signal.”
“We cover Stamford, Oakham & Uppingham, but also reach Melton, Corby, Bourne and
even further afield in higher areas. The signal is carried by two local transmitters and of course listeners can also receive us online.”
“The beauty of radio is its unpredictability. When the great Rutland earthquake struck in 2013 the buzz and the response was incredible. We became a place for locals to check in and exchange experiences.”
“That’s really what radio is all about. Our listeners have a real passion for their area, and for its history. They really want to contribute to the show and take ownership of it, sharing information and joining in. You can plan some content for the following day’s show but you can never totally predict what the listeners are going to engage with most, or what surprising stories will pop up.”
“Recently we had two 80-year old skydivers, and I thought they were wonderful, but I suppose my most memorable caller would have be our ‘royal correspondent,’ Rachel, who gave us daily updates in the run up to the birth of Prince George. We kept in touch and married in 2016. Someone once said to me, “The trouble with sausages, is that you can’t tell if it’s a bad one until it’s in your mouth.” I replied that if he was from Rutland, he’d know that it’s very rare to come across a bad sausage.
In the picturesque setting of Barnsdale you will find Farmer Lou and her soon-to-be husband Joe taking care of cattle, sheep and pigs which they are currently producing posh pork and lush lamb from and hopefully beef in the future.
I believe the reason our sausages are so consistently brilliant is the pigs behind them and of course, the fantastic local farmers.
Joe will tell you just how watchful after a brief hospital visit. >>
We have the mighty Lincolnshire sausage right on our doorstep and our very own Rutland sausages which are just as delicious, some might argue better but lets not get side-tracked by sausage politics.
It’s a great set up; pigs lazily sunbathing in the sunshine on a fresh bed of barley straw, lambs and their mothers grazing in endless fields and cattle munching away on silage, keeping a very watchful eye on their calves.
Right: Previously from Northamptonshire, Joe and Lou moved to the area two years ago to establish their artisan livestock operation alongside a rather larger arable farming role. They’re already offering high quality pork and lamb and could offer high welfare beef in the future, too.

The animals are entirely farmed, butchered and transported by them and they use a family run abattoir. This freedom with the whole process means that Lou can tailor everything to the animals needs as well as the customers so if you want a specific flavour in your sausages, all you have to do is ask!
They’re not meeting a demand and this means there is absolutely no intensive rearing or farming to produce porkier pigs or chunky lambs, just healthy, happy livestock. A giveaway that the animals are well looked after is that they know

their names. Geoff the Boar only had to be called once to come over for a good scratch. He’s quite the impressive pig and does very well with the ladies. They have saddlebacks as well as the traditional breeds and some commercial and cross breeds. The lambs are kept at grass all year round, only coming in to lamb and never force ‘finished’ indoors.
Lou and Joe are in charge of everything including breeding, which has really progressed over the years. “We ideally like the calves to be small so that the birth can go as smoothly as possible,” Joe told me.
“Then they need to grow quickly so that they’re nice and strong.” The couple predominantly keep

As well as the livestock, Joe farms 700 acres of arable land and Lou looks after their 18 month old twins. We visited on an idyllic day, the sun was shining and on days like this it’s possible to convince yourself that people like Lou and Joe are living la dolce vita. Last summer more than 34,000 people experienced the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grounds, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other. This year, the Company is celebrating its golden anniversary. Work currently taking place includes an exciting revamp of the bar, restaurant and orangery which will celebrate the past 50 years. There will be costume and photo displays, exhibitions of the Company’s history and much more. The Stamford Shakespeare Company, founded in 1968 by RADA graduate Jean Harley, produced plays in the Monastery Garden of Stamford’s historic George Hotel, initially to raise money for the creation of the Stamford Arts Centre and restoration of the Georgian theatre in St Mary’s Street. The George garden we know today is still magical, but predominantly used for weddings and other events.
When, due to building work, the hotel could no longer accommodate the Company, a new venue had to be found. In 1977, with only £78 in the bank, the Stamford Shakespeare Company acquired the near-derelict Tolethorpe Hall. A private loan of £36,000, later repaid, enabled the Company to buy the property and take advantage of the natural amphitheatre in the grounds. Members quickly set about the huge task of getting everything ready for the first season. Concrete steps were laid, turning a natural bank of grass and weeds into a raked auditorium.

The opening season at Tolethorpe Hall in 1977 saw productions of Macbeth and The Taming of the Shrew. Members who recall the early days describe it as a chance happening which began with no great ambitions, no business plan, just a wish to carry on performing Shakespeare in the open air for the enjoyment of local audiences. Tolethorpe Hall is in Rutland, close to the Lincolnshire border, and the new theatre was named Rutland Open Air Theatre although it was decided to keep the company name, Stamford Shakespeare Company, since after nine years at The George Hotel it had become so well-known. In the early 1980’s Derek Harrison, took on the publicity and oversaw increases in attendance from 6,000 in 1985 to 12,000 in 1986 and over 34,000 by 1994.
Incredibly, the 2018 season has just seen ticket sales hit one million since the Company began performing at Tolethorpe Hall. HERITAGE It’s the local company with a national reputation for excellence. Opening 80 years prior to M&S, Rob Davis looks back at the origins of Oldrids and Downtown The Oldrids name was first heard in the town of Boston when draper, mercer, hosier, haberdasher and funeral director John Oldrid, who was born near Spilsby in Hagworthingham in 1778, moved his business to Boston. The business passed down to John Oldrid III (far right) in 1831 and though his wife ran the business until her death, a lack of male heirs meant Oldrid & Co was put up for sale in 1906 whereupon Sydney Smith purchased it. Smith had a somewhat irascible management style and in leaner times would even add small amounts to his customers’ accounts.
After nine years the business passed into the ownership of Mr Robert Isaac, the first of a local retail dynasty which endures today (see opposite). The war years saw a decline in trade as there was less money to spend and fewer resources to trade. Nevertheless the business thrived with new opportunities to sell furniture and kitchen appliances in the more optimistic decades of the 1950s and 1960s. The 1970s saw the introduction of the Oldrids otter; a familiar logo for a decade. Today the business sells over 250,000 lines and keeps up with changing trends of fashions and home furnishings. n
Looking After Our People Whilst the company has grown, its core values of looking after both customers and employees alike continues. All members of staff are entitled to a free ‘soup and sandwich’ lunch, and staff enjoy 20% discount with two members of staff sitting on the board as directors. There are generous long service awards for employees like Sheila Hayes, who has been employed by the company for 45 years, and 15% of the company’s shares are held in trust for the benefit of employees in the form of dividend payments. n

A true family business, Martin Isaac is Chairman of the Oldrids board, Peter Isaac is Finance Director, whilst Rachel Emmitt (née Isaac) and Roberta Isaac work in the Boston ‘in town’ store’s restaurant. Richard Isaac works in the furniture department
of the Downtown Boston store, whilst Dawn Isaac and Ruth Stephenson (née Isaac) are Non-Executive Directors. The company also employs no fewer than four members of the Chester family and five members of the Allen family, too! Husband and wife team Andrew & Joan Brader, have worked together at Oldrids for 40 years! n

THE FUTURE With 700 employees, 250,000 lines and 500,000sq ft retail space across Lincolnshire, Oldrids & Downtown are names that have been synonymous with quality and choice for over 200 years... but in the era of online shopping and large retailers, what does the next two centuries hold for the stores? Oldrids & Downtown are names that have proved synonymous with quality and choice in retail for over 200 years. It’s one of the few family owned/independent retailers left in the UK and enjoys an enviable reputation nationally as well as employing over 700 people locally. At the helm is Richard Broadhead, Managing Director and the man responsible for ensuring a steady ship in an uncertain time for retail. Our values can remain constant and we can mitigate the need to make profit with a social conscience as we grow, trade and as we embark on improving our online shopping experience - 40% of which is local custom - whilst developing our Downtown site near Grantham too.”
As Pride goes to press the company hopes to secure the go-ahead for its new designer outlet. The site will form part of a wider redesign of the Gonerby Junction site including the creation of a new garden centre. It will include more than 220,000sq ft of retail space, the creation of 107 designer outlet stores with some big names already secured but subject to an embargo. The 25 acre site will also include 2,000 parking spaces, 22,000sq ft of leisure attractions and will inject £125m into the local economy.

THE OLIVE BRANCH IN CLIPSHAM
Very definitely a pub, very definitely relaxed, and very definitely one of the best dining experiences in the area. This month we enjoy a return visit to Clipsham’s Olive Branch, to enjoy the hospitality of Ben Jones, Sean Hope and their exceptional team... Words: Rob Davis.
Few things in life are flawless. Holidays have to end, interest rates can go up as well as down, the clouds in the sky are just impending rain. I’m all for optimism but it’s often wise to temper expectation with reality.
Sometimes, however, you encounter something so satisfyingly flawless that it’s akin to a moment of perfection, frozen in time. The sight of a perfectly maintained garden in June; the expression on the family dog dozing in the sunshine; an open top car and an empty country road.
Forgive the flowery prose, but I’ve just emerged from Clipsham’s Olive Branch for a return visit and it, too, is flawless. Purely in the interest of journalistic integrity, I had to check that was still the case and I’m happy to report that Sean Hope and Ben Jones’s

place is still very definitely a pub, still very definitely relaxed and still very definitely one of the best places to dine in the area. 18 years ago the two restauranteurs shook hands with Hambleton Hall’s Tim Hart and departed from the grand old place to impress the Michelin inspectors in a completely different way; with a ‘militantly relaxed’ place to dine... if that’s not an oxymoron?
Back then the notion of a pub that served good food was comparatively rare. Today it’s a more common concept, which raises the question of whether the place has become lost in the crowd... but no. The Olive Branch has managed to keep pretenders to the throne at bay with consistent improvement >>
With the help of friends, family and villagers, Sean Hope, Ben Jones and Marcus Welford bought The Olive Branch in 1999 and spent six weeks scrubbing, cleaning, decorating and renovating to bring it back to its former glory as a village pub. Sean oversees The Olive Branch kitchen, as well as searching out new local produce, whilst Ben Jones oversees front of house service for the pub’s diners. n

That hasn’t just extended to keeping abreast of dining trends, but also creating a pub shop selling very good wine, preserves, pickles, condiments, plus chocolates and cheese. The two also developed an adjacent country property, Beech House, into a six bedroom luxury bed and breakfast style boutique hotel. Acquiring the site across the road from the building also enabled the two to create a kitchen garden. throughout the year. Other local suppliers taking a bow include Grasmere Farm (who provide their Grunta as a bar snack) Stilton Butchers, Rutland Charcuterie and Hambleton Bakery. The restaurant’s own rare breed hens provide the place with eggs, speciality bread, sauces, soups, ice creams, sorbets, oils and mayo are made in house from scratch.
Sean & Ben host a series of food masterclasses (butchery; fish; bread; pasta), and cookery demonstrations with 3rd and 10th July the next events.
Meanwhile, 22nd September is the next date for the pub restaurant’s wine masterclass. South African wines, is the rather tempting theme for a tutored tasting of between seven and nine examples of wine from the region. Restaurant manager and South African native Alistair McKinlay will host the event, with his typical trademark warmth and knowledgeability. They’re great events and only serve to highlight the pub restaurant’s desire to make food and drink something you enjoy, not just consume.
Lunchtime and evening service sees a choice of seven starters and eight main courses and a tasting menu comprises five courses chosen by the Olive Branch’s brigade.
Eight very tempting desserts are offered too, including mini desserts for those who can’t, or shouldn’t but really want to. Sunday lunch is one of the best in the area, too, traditional but technically flawless. A Strawberrry ROMANCE
As English as a Royal wedding, as traditional as Wimbledon in July, but never ever as disappointing as the British climate. This month Georgie Fenn champions the great British strawberry! Words: Georgie Fenn.
It’s that time of year where Pimm’s is acceptable at lunchtime and you’ll find yourself digging out that Lacoste kit for an enthusiastic but somewhat dangerous round of tennis. The best part of Wimbledon after the tennis is arguably, the strawberries. For two joyous weeks, the humble strawberries and cream becomes a pudding priority.
This delightful combination was first served at Wimbledon way back in 1877 when only 200 spectators would go to see the Championships. These days, an average of 10,000 litres of cream and 28,000kg of strawberries are consumed at the tournament each year which is a somewhat staggering amount.
When it’s strawberry season you must only serve something strawberry themed such as; pavlova, strawberries and cream, strawberry ice cream, it’s an unwritten law. To really impress the guests, you should grow your own strawberries. Some spaces and lifestyles just aren’t cut out for the home-grown gardening malarkey which means you need to go down the pick your own route instead.
Help is at hand at Rutland Water Golf Course and if you go in the middle of the day, you won’t be spotted by anyone you know as they’ll either be busy trying for the ‘hole in one’ or out for lunch somewhere.
You’ll be greeted by a charming Nick Makey who will direct you to one of twelve polytunnels to pick your strawberries. There are various varieties including Sonata, Elsanta, Malling Centenary and Fenella. Nick will be picking his own, first thing in the morning, if you’re not keen on manual labour but still want fresh strawberries. Nick has been running this Pick Your Own field of fun since 1995. As well as being available to the general public, Nick also delivers fresh strawberries to local restaurants such as Hambleton Hall... opt for a strawberry dessert as they will have arrived fresh that morning!

TRIPLE LAYER STRAWBERRY CAMOMILE CAKE
Preparation Time: 30 minutes. Cooking Time: 30 minutes. Serves: 12. Six fresh free range eggs 450g caster sugar 150g soft butter 190g plain flour 40g cornflour 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Half cup camomile tea 2 tablespoons sugar 25g flaked almonds, toasted 600ml double cream 3 tablespoons caster sugar Punnet of strawberries to decorate Flowers to decorate (camomile if you can find them)
Preheat oven to 200°c/400°f and line three 20cm/8inch springform pans on the base and sides. Whisk 100g of the egg whites to soft peaks. Add in the 150g of caster sugar and whip to firm peaks. Place in a separate bowl. Then whisk the 240g of egg whites, 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar until soft peaks and then add in the 300g of caster sugar until stiff peaks. Then add in the butter and the egg yolks and then whisk until smooth. Fold in the flour and cornstarch and then the reserved meringue and vanilla. Divide in the three prepared tins and bake for 25 minutes. Allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes and then unclip the collar and cool still on the base. Meanwhile make a cup of strong camomile tea and mix with two tablespoons sugar. Just before assembling whip the cream with the three tablespoons caster sugar until you get dollopy peaks that can hold a shape. Chop some of the strawberries into quarters leaving others halved while leaving the blackberries and raspberries whole. Place one layer on a serving plate. Brush the cake with the tea and spread a third of the cream on the cake. Top with some almonds and strawberries. Repeat with the remaining tea, cream and berries. Decorate with flowers. n

Strawberry & Camomile Shortcakes Makes Six. Preparation Time: 20 mins. Cooking Time: 20 mins. Total Time: 40 mins plus chilling, resting and cooling. For the Filling: 400g local Strawberries, hulled and halved, or quartered if large 2-3 tbsp caster sugar, to taste Finely grated zest of 1 lemon For the Shortcakes: 300ml pot double cream 2 camomile teabags 90g unsalted butter, cubed 2 tbsp whole milk 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 2 tsp baking powder 50g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract

ese delicately flavoured shortcakes have a complex, subtle spiciness from the infused camomile and are a match made in heaven for sweet British strawberries.
Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Mix the strawberries, caster sugar and lemon zest in a small bowl and set aside to soften a little. Warm 125ml cream in a small pan with the teabags until simmering. Remove from the heat, add the butter and infuse for five minutes. Squeeze the teabags and discard.
Reheat the pan to melt the butter, if needed, then stir in the milk. In a large bowl, sift the flour and baking powder, then mix in the infused cream with 50g caster sugar and a pinch of salt, bringing together to make a rough dough.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 2cm thickness. Cut out six biscuits with a 6cm round cutter, rerolling the dough as needed. Place on a lined baking tray and chill for 15 minutes.
Brush the tops with a little cream and bake for 12-15 minutes, until light golden. Place on a wire rack to cool, then carefully split in half horizontally. Whip the remaining cream with one tbsp castar sugar and vanilla to soft peaks. Spoon onto half the shortcakes, add the strawberries, then balance the remaining shortcakes on top.
The shortcakes can be frozen for up to one month. Thaw thoroughly before filling and serving. n

I’m yet to meet anyone who doesn’t aspire to a beautiful stone cottage in our part of the world. This month’s featured property is one that we suspect will appeal especially strongly to readers, with a wealth of traditional features and materials. Its unique selling point, though, must be its deceptive spaciousness, with five reception rooms, five double bedrooms, its selfcontained annexe and range of outbuildings. It’s the home of Giles and Penny Brook, and has been beautifully restored, with clean, crisp white tones used throughout and natural materials allowed to come to the fore.
Herringbone timber flooring, oak beams and window seats, plus carved stone fireplaces all sit below the thatched roof of the original part of the cottage.
Limestone flooring in the cottage’s kitchen and the couple’s chunky rustic dining furniture are sweet, but are both juxtaposed between a modern hand-built Alexander Lewis kitchen with granite work surfaces and premium integrated appliances including a British Racing Green Aga set into its beamed alcove. After three years Hazel and Wayne Horn were seeking to create a kitchen that would be the magnum opus in the restoration of their Edwardian home. The couple were looking for a kitchen that blended traditional style with modern functionality... and traditional craftsmanship was a must!

Traditional craftsmanship for period homes, that seamlessly blend modern design and technology with the provenance of your home. It’s a real specialism and one with which Moir Wade’s Will Moir and Jonathan Wade are very familiar.
The pair worked alongside designer James Hyde-Dryden, to create the kitchen and media wall in Hazel and Wayne Horn’s three-storey six bedroom Edwardian home in Leicester. After a three year restoration of the property, the two were seeking to combine a kitchen and scullery, incorporate a modern kitchen but ensure the room remained in keeping with the property.
The couple run an engineering company calibrating test equipment for the aerospace sector. Clearly it’s a business that relies on precision and the couple were impressed to see Moir Wade incorporate a similar obsession with precision into their new room. “Everything was coordinated, properly managed,” says Hazel. “Everyone turned up when they should have done, time scales were adhered to, it was all so professional; so well managed with great communication and aftersales support.”
The kitchen uses solid American walnut cabinetry with additional cabinets hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Joa’s White, and white quartz surfaces. The kitchen has Miele appliances, an induction hob and Kohler carbon fibre tap, plus brass lights and dining chairs designed by Tom Dixon. The room incorporates Moir Wade’s own freestanding bespoke elliptical dining table and bench, and a media wall with all cables hidden neatly away. “We’re so happy with the space the firm has created and so impressed with Moir Wade’s service... we have a lovely property as a whole, but somewhat frustratingly the room is so nice that we find ourselves living only in this one room!” n

I see the potential in my own homes, and move in, then renovate them,” says Emma, who completed the renovation of an Edwardian town house in Stamford in November 2016, and her current home, a 400 year old cottage, late last year.
“I love breathing new life into old properties, and I’ve moved so many times that actually, I’ve become great at doing so without any major stress. I enjoy it all! It surprises my friends, who are always daunted by the prospect of taking on a refurbishment project, so I realised I could offer the same services to other people.”

ANTIQUES Stoneware in various forms has been produced throughout the world for centuries. It is defined as pottery fired at around 1200 degrees centigrade producing a robust, dense body, ably used for fine tableware, ornaments, insulators and even chemical vessels. Advertising pieces of the 19th and 20th centuries are providing popular as either collectables or interior decorator’s pieces, beautifully juxtaposing with modern furnishings. The naive charm of Lincolnshire and other local stoneware coupled with the vast array of designs; from beer bottles, other tavern related items, butter churns, flagons and even political flasks prominent in areas such as Horncastle and the array of advertising styles and varied names mean there are vast numbers of pieces to buy and a great number of collectors. Take the humble beer bottle for example: its birth in glass can be traced back to a Dr Alexander Nowell, some 440 years ago in Hertfordshire. 18th century stoneware pieces are rare and it was in the 19th century that porter (a drink similar to stout) began to be bottled in any number. Whitbread were a big producer of pottery vessels in the 1870s and local firms
followed suit. Taking Grantham alone, we have seen several examples recently by Johnson, Basker & Fletcher, R J Boyall and the illustrated Summerbys type. The illustrated Buttercup Dairy butter crock, produced by A W Buchan in the very late 19th century, in Portobello, Scotland is a rare, quirky survivor. It would’ve had a lid, but the pail is in excellent condition for an everyday item, proving its hardiness. We see many examples of local advertising stoneware, pick a place: Alford, Lincoln, Grantham, Southwell, Stamford, Bourne, and you will almost certainly find something. Pieces can be inexpensive but look fantastic in modern dwellings; there is a lot available and it needs to be cherished, bought and enjoyed. n With best wishes, Craig Bewick, MRICS. l Even if lawns turn brown and dry over summer, watering is usually not necessary over summer, but if you do have to water the lawn and maintain a green sward, aerate it by spiking with a garden fork before watering, to aid water penetration. Watering once a week to every 10 days is normally sufficient.
l areas of dry shade, such as under trees, become sparse very quickly despite adequate care. Consider over-seeding on an annual basis to maintain a dense sward. l if grass loses its vigour and freshness this month, apply sulphate of ammonia mixed with four times its weight dry soil. Mixing
with soil ensures even distribution and avoids scorching the grass.
l Moss is a problem in damp, poorly drained lawns. spring aeration is a good way to remedy moss.
l Use long-handled shears to define the edge of your lawn, and stop the grass growing into borders. n 117

The Local Sculptor

Sculptor Theodore Gillick takes his inspiration from nature, and as a keen botanist too, has found that keeping honey bees is not only a rewarding pastime, but yields the ability to harvest delicious honey with seasonal variations... What you have to love about Stamford and Rutland is not only the beauty of the countryside and all the pretty houses, but the people who inhabit them. You may have heard about the Gillick family who live in Priory House. Perhaps the charming children have crossed your path before or maybe you’re a very fortunate owner of a Theo Gillick sculpture.
Ruth Gillick may have dazzled you with her warm smile; either way, the energy that this family holds is something quite remarkable. We were fortunate enough to visit Theo and his family recently, not to talk his latest sculptures (although we can’t resist touching on that a little) but to discuss the business of his bees. Apis mellifera prove a respite for the intensity that comes hand in hand with creating masterpieces. Theo is currently working on human sculptures but in the past he has mainly worked with animals.
Theo captures an animal or human in their natural state, no editing, no re-design, but a perfectly sculptured homage to their natural, unconscious beauty.
As we sat in the living room, an audience congregated around Theo as he began to talk. A two-year-old Dulcima perched on the sofa, heart-breaking blue eyes looking up at Daddy in fascination while Florence and her cousin Pia listened as they lent against the wall, so much focus in this distracted world.
An ever-growing Louis perched on a chair, ready at any moment to contribute his own extraordinary knowledge and we were later joined by Maya, a family friend who seemed

It all began for the Gillick’s after a poor attempt at growing various plants and vegetables in the kitchen garden of their stunning 18th century house. Theo decided that lack of pollination was a big problem and with his scientific, botanist education and his wife Ruth’s background in ecology, they decided to venture into bee keeping.

THE BEES AND THE TREES...

“We had everything from wasps invading the beehives to dying queens,” says Theo, clearly still a bit traumatised by those teething issues. Theo pulled through this time with the generous help of his mentor, Alastair Stirling, a man from Ketton who’s father was the infamous David Stirling who founded the SAS (see, that’s another local gem!). It was Alastair’s guidance that may have stopped Theo killing off his hives entirely. Just four months down the line of this baptism of fire and you’ll no longer see your average beehive anywhere near Priory House.
Theo explained that the original beehive design, the basic structure that a chap called Reverend Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth designed in 1852, is still largely accepted as the standard home for bees today.
Langstroth constructed his hives so that bees built their honey comb in his wooden frames instead of wherever they liked, and these could be lifted out and inspected. It was utterly ingenious, but that’s about 150 years ago. Many beekeepers have tried new designs, but the advantages are small so little has changed at all. Theo puts this lack of progress down to there simply being not enough money in beekeeping to invest in R&D; and standard hives ‘do the job’ in many respects. Nevertheless, after pulling together knowledge from keepers all over the planet and what Theo refers to as a lot of ‘beginners hubris,’ the new design of hive that is taking great care of Theo’s bees came about.
He doesn’t give too much away about the real technicalities of his invention only that after five trials and re-designs it allows the bees to sense and smell the temperature outside of their very well-insulated hive. The colonies are huge and healthy and he has averaged about ten times as much honey from one hive as a run-of-the-mill hive could. In the middle of summer, Theo expects to have around one million bees between his ten hives, but with a few novel management methods, only takes a quarter of the work of an old hive, all thanks to a little bit of imagination when it comes to their habitat.
“We’ve got some nice colonies this time,” he says, with a smile before recounting tales of some of the more violent broods they’ve had that have resulted in various stinging stories and his son Louis looking like a Disney character for a short time after being stung on his upper lip.” 124
“The whole family have suits; they are very much a team. The character of the colony relies on that of the Queen bee or ‘mother bee’ as she is called everywhere else. “If she’s feisty, it’s likely you’ll get the odd sting but if you have a kinder strain you could make it through a summer without needing to reach for the antihistamines once.”
Theo has labelled his honey St. Benedict’s after the Benedictine Monks who are likely to have last kept bees at St. Leonard’s Priory, now buried underneath his garden, in the 1530s. You can buy the honey if you make your way to the Friday market in Stamford. The earlier the better... because it’s creating quite the buzz. n
The natural home for bees is living trees. Trees have been important in Theo’s development of his own hives because whereas we know bees don’t manage the temperature in their hives, we have overlooked what the tree does. Tree trunks respond in real time to ambient temperature staying about the same as the air (have you ever felt a hot tree!). But they never go above 34°C, and never less than 0.1°C above freezing. And guess what? A nest of bees is also 34°C.
Trees don’t let bees nests boil or freeze. That’s why it’s so important to think about the natural relationship between bees and their tree homes if we want to keep them well, healthy and strong. n For more information on beekeeping, see www.bbka.org.uk.

This month’s couple met each other when Chris, originally from Manchester, was transferred to the same office as Katie when they were both working for Park West Gallery, Katie as an Art Dealer and Chris as Head of Publishing. Katie’s friend Jennifer also works for the company but over in Texas and Chris had worked alongside her too. “Jennifer and I share the same birthday and we have always spent it together, ever since we’ve been friends,” Katie tells me.

With some confidence, Chris had already asked Katie’s father for permission before the holiday and he’d been on the Burghley website and so they returned home to a wedding brochure sent from Kara, Events Manager at Burghley.
“Before our holiday we actually found Burghley and I couldn’t believe you could get married there,” says Katie. “We’d been doing some Googling and I was saying maybe we should look for somewhere smaller
“We wanted it to be quintiseentially British because half of the guests were coming from the U.S. and some of them had never been to England before.
We thought it would be great to have almost a historical British banquet, but with a ‘Marie Antoinette meets Dracula feel,” says Katie.The fabulous Kara totally understood Katie’s vision and the planning began!
A very forward thinking Chris decided his first date would be to fly Katie over to Texas for her birthday so that she could spend it with Jennifer. “I was a little bit worried he’d have expectations but he was the perfect gent and picked me up for dinner and dropped me back home after. It must be a British thing, it was perfect.” After that ridiculously impressive first date, the pair were living together just two months later and Chris proposed to Katie in the Bahamas shortly after. “We’d been together almost a year at this stage, and before he asked me,” Katie says, “Chris asked if I’d want to get married in England and I replied ‘yes let’s get married in a castle!’”
but I fell in love with Burghley’s history.” Coming from a historically knowledgeable background, Katie is the sort of person who is exceedingly good at research. After finding out that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited during their honeymoon, Katie was sold; it had to be Burghley.

The stunning wedding dress was a custom design that Katie and her monther designed themselves after studying a lot of historical photos.
The original dress is an Inbal Dror design but the veil, skirt and sleeve attachments were designed by Katie and the Ever After Boutique in Miami and later constructed over two weeks by four talented ateliers at Miami Atelier. It took two giant body bags to get the dress onto their Business Class flight to the UK. “If I could give anyone a tip it’s this,” laughs Katie. “If you want to be taken care of, present the flight attendants with a box of really good chocolates. My dress had its own closet!” The bridesmaids also ended up wearing

“I told Kara I wanted ‘Marie Antoinette meets Dracula...’ as of our US guests had never been to England before!” cream coloured dresses after many trials and tribulations over colour choice. “Because I’m originally from Detroit, I looked back at Henry Ford’s wedding photos,” says Katie, “The bridesmaids were wearing these amazing sashes with flowers adorning them, so after discussing it with the florist at Pollen Design she managed to recreate it!”
The marvellous cake is printed with Burghley’s very own Heaven Room ceiling artwork thanks entirely to Couture Cakes. The monogram she had designed is because of Marie Antoinette’s ‘M’ on her cake and so Katie inspired Dotty Creations and our cake artist to do the same. As for tips? Katie says: “We weren’t sure whether to have the fireworks at the end of the evening because they seemed a bit extravagant, but in the end we just went for it and honestly, it’s been the highlight of my life and I can’t even remember how much it cost.”
The happy couple are living together in Miami and Katie is expecting their first child, a baby boy, in October. You’ll find Katie updating her blog, www.dontburndinner.com after retiring from being an Arts Dealer to be a full time housewife and prepare for being a Mother. They hope to return to Stamford in the future, “We had such a lovely time staying at The George in Stamford, we can’t wait to go back,” I’m sure The George would love to have them back too. By pure coincidence, Chris’s brother is now living in Stamford. He moved there just before the wedding. Can anyone resist Stamford’s charm, we wonder? n 130

MBST may be something you’ve heard of or come across, but what is it? In a nutshell: MBST is a therapy that transfers energy directly into the cells of the tissue we treat to stimulate the regenerative processes. ‘Super Range Rover’ Coupé to Launch “I do love the Range Rover... I just wish it was more expensive and less practical.” On the face of it, it seems like the new SV Coupé Range Rover flagship is the answer to a question nobody asked... or maybe not, says Pride’s Rob Davis.

POTHOLES COST UK AUTHORITIES OVER £43.3m IN COMPENSATION... The poor state of the county’s roads aren’t just an inconvenience, they’re also very costly, according to a Freedom of Information Act by charity Cycling UK. Their request revealed that 30,893 drivers and 670 cyclists claimed for pothole damage compensation last year, with £43.3m paid out by councils and legal costs alone of £10m. JAGUAR The Jaguar iPace is a big deal. Why? Because it’s not a combustion engine car that’s been fettled into a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid vehicle. It’s the firm’s first car made from the ground up to be electrically powered, and the first mainstream competitor to Tesla’s Model X. It’s designed to represent the future of motoring, to provide clean, and eventually autonomous
driving, without compomise and with the luxury and badge appeal you’d expect from a car made by Jaguar. The iPace is available in S, SE and HSE trim levels, priced from £63,495, to £74,445. A well-equipped First Edition model is also available for £81,495. The car will travel 298 miles between charges and reach 60mph in 4.5 secs and emits zero CO2. n

Able to plough a field at 80.8mph, the tractor comes with all the mod cons from LED lights and spoilers to a rotating boot cleaning robot brush. It’ll be on show on Beaulieu this summer, and was recently seen on BBC’s Top Gear disturbing filming of Countryfile. n
MINI Combine BMW engineering and Mini’s heritage and what do you get? The firm has created an all-electric version of the supermini classic. A late and carefully restored example of the classic Mini Cooper serves as the basis for this special vehicle. The exterior red paint is complemented by a contrast white roof and characteristic bonnet strip, with the yellow MINI Electric logo in the brand emblem and on the wheel hubs. For now the car remains a concept, but it may make an appearance after an all electric ‘modern’ Mini launches, sometime in early 2019. n
