WELCOME
W
hat a year 2020 has been. It’s easy to remember the worst of it, of course, but what about the best? What about the moments we stood on our doorsteps and applauded our hard-working NHS heroes, or the keyworkers who kept our cupboards full? What about that occasion you checked on your neighbour just to make sure they were alright? What about that enduring message, which permeated our collective consciousness; that we should all support local businesses? The latter had particular resonance with us as Pride has thrived, even during Covid, thanks to the support of our readers and advertisers, who both respect and appreciate the importance of supporting local businesses and are mourning the lack of their usual visits to local shops, pubs and restaurants. Hang in there and stay positive. Spring is just around the corner, and with it better times – and better weather – are sure to follow. I’m sure that we will soon be out and about in Stamford & Rutland enjoying all of the fun activities and days out that we’ve had to sacrifice in 2020. In this edition – in lieu of being able to go there personally – we’re visiting Burghley House ‘virtually’ to see its role in the Netflix drama The Crown. Speaking of The Crown, we’re also looking back on the life of Queen Katherine of Aragon whose final resting place is in Peterborough Cathedral, whilst the destination for this month’s dining out feature is... The Crown in Uppingham! We also feature local stylist Emma Beaver, whose fascinating career as a designer and buyer for top UK retailers means she’s well placed to reveal everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the fashion industry. Best wishes and Happy New Year!

Pride’s sustainable start to 2021...
WE’RE MAKING AN EVEN GREATER COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY IN PUBLISHING
PRIDE MAGAZINES As the finest magazine in the county, it stands to reason that we want to ensure our precious Rutland & Stamford remains a green and pleasant land for many years to come. We all have to play our part in ensuring sustainability and that’s why we’re delighted to reveal that in conjunction with our new print partner, we’re making an even greater commitment to ensuring our business is as sustainable as possible. “You’ll notice that Pride is now delivered in premium paper wrapping, eliminating plastic from our magazine mailing operations,” says Executive Editor Rob Davis. “We’ve been working on replacing conventional plastic polywrapping for a number of months, investigating new compostable wrappers and bioplastics. But now we’re delighted to have found what
we believe is the most sustainable and environmentally friendly way to ensure Pride reaches our readers safely.” “In addition, our magazines are printed using paper certified by the Forest Stewardship

RUTLAND With the property market booming post-lockdown and 35% of buyers looking to move to a new area, research has revealed England’s best and worst places for families to live in 2021. The study, conducted by Oxford Home Schooling, ranked local authorities on a number of key factors: the percentage of schools that are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the percentage of school places available, the affordability of housing, based on average wages and property prices, and the number of crimes per 1,000 people.
Rutland came out on top, and despite an impressive 95% of its schools being scored highly by Ofsted, more than a third (34%) of the student spots available were not filled last year. With the nation’s second lowest crime rate, at just 41 incidents per 1,000 people, it’s also an incredibly safe place to live. Regarding crime, the national average is 93 offences per 1,000 people; more than double the rate here in Rutland. It’s a great place for schools and a safe place for families, too! n See our education feature later in this edition of Pride.

THE CROWN AT BURGHLEY
TAKING the
CROWN
Some of the backgrounds in Netflix’s flagship drama The Crown may look as familiar as the faces themselves... and that’s because Stamford’s Burghley House and Grantham’s Belvoir Castle were just two of the preferred locations used to film this lavish series about the more turbulent events during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II... Words: Rob Davis.

THE CROWN
In Shakespeare’s Henry IV, the eponymous king declares ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.’ The trials and tribulations of monarchs provided sufficient material to keep the playwright going for years. It’s little surprise; being a monarch is never dull. Our own Queen’s reign of 68 years has had its challenges, but what makes for a challenging life also makes great TV. And one of the best series on our screens at the moment is The Crown, which over 73,000,000 households have watched since it debuted in 2016. Series four is now available to stream and if the faces are familiar, then the locations should be even more recognisable, because both Burghley House & Grantham’s Belvoir Castle make admirable representations of Windsor Castle in both series three and four of the drama. We spoke to Director Ben Caron, about what compelled him to film in the area and what the latest series has in store for viewers… What attracted you to Belvoir Castle and latterly to Burghley House?
Both are great locations. Unfortunately, we were unable to make the schedule work for our usual Windsor visits to Belvoir Castle and therefore had to seek an alternative.
and through all the highs and lows of a marriage that ends in divorce from the Prince of Wales. What happens during season four?
It’s jam packed. We’ve got Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, the Falklands, sibling rivalry, and Michael Fagan, the Palace intruder and sat on the bed of the Queen of England. Additionally, in 10 Downing Street we have rivalry between the two Heads of State; the Queen and Margaret Thatcher. It’s a relationship where you think they are going to get on and very quickly descends into difficulties between two very similar personalities. What did you think of the scripts?
When I read our writer Peter Morgan’s scripts, there’s always a sense of, ‘oh, I know what’s coming up.’ And of course, there are the big moments in the season. There is the wedding, which everyone’s going to be
“I genuinely don’t know how Olivia Colman does it. I don’t even think she knows how she does it. She is gifted, warm and so generous!”
We went through a number of options with Martin Childs, Production Designer. One of the early contenders was Burghley House. Burghley is not too far from Belvoir Castle, situated in Stamford and they were very keen to be involved with the show. The interior frescos at Burghley were actually painted by the same artist as those at Windsor and once Martin visited, he loved the house and the next step was to convince production that this would be our next Windsor. It soon became everybody’s new favourite location!
excited about and there’s Thatcher. There are all the things that I remember now that I’m coming into a decade in which I was alive. But there are also the brilliant unknown stories that Peter gets his magnifying glass out and scratches beneath the surface of.
When does season four take place?
Is there a particular scene you’re really proud of?
Season four of The Crown starts in 1979 and goes all the way through to 1990. I’m very excited about season four because I think it’s our finest. We’ve got two characters coming into season four played by two sensational actors, and that is Margaret Thatcher – born of course in Grantham – and Lady Diana Spencer, who lived for a time in nearby Althorp, in Northamptonshire. We see the Thatcher years and we also witness the journey of Diana. Diana goes from young adult to mother of two children, 18
This season I directed the opening episode and episode three. In episode one, there are a couple of scenes that really stand out for me. One, is the first time we meet Diana. When Peter first wrote that scene it felt really mythological in the sense that there was this other worldly person that was camouflaged in her. Then, we had this encounter with Charles, brief though it was, but it left some indelible mark on him that we would then return to later. We knew as an audience watching
how important the first meeting was. I remember thinking about Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet and specifically about that moment when they met around the fish tank. I thought about how fun it would be to stage the scene so that Diana was hiding in front of the greenery and only for a brief moment, you had this moment of eyes locking. What were the specific challenges of this series?
With every season of The Crown, and this is season four, we always start with what we can bring that is new and different. I like to think The Crown has a very modern approach and doesn’t fall into that sort of classic period drama. The Crown season four covers the 80s, which was referred to as ‘Thatcher’s broken Britain,’ and so we were sort of interested in how we could bring a little more of that visceral reality of how Britain was at that time. We looked at trying to maybe slowly steer the season away from the slightly more fairy-tale approach in the earlier seasons and more towards the grittier version of life in the 1980s.
How does this season look different to the last?
In terms of making season four different from a camera point of view, without getting too technical, we have brought on new cameras and new lenses. We tested lots of cameras and lenses at the beginning of the season and I think our audience will still feel like they’re watching The Crown, but that it has the feeling of something that is taking us into the 1980s. What was it like changing cast last season?
I think season three was a huge challenge for our cast. They had the unenviable task of taking the baton from previous actors in seasons one and two. Coming back for series four, though, was like welcoming back old friends. It was a challenge, and it’s daunting to think we might do the same for seasons five and six, but I think all of those actors – not just in terms of how the audience are responding to them – also looked forward to coming back to season four. How well does Olivia represent The Queen?
I think she is brilliant. She turns up, knocks it out of the park and then goes home. I genuinely don’t know how she does it. I don’t even think she knows how she does it. She is one of the most amazingly gifted, warm, generous people that exist in the world, and we are incredibly grateful to her

THE CROWN
on set. I think she is the matriarch on camera, and she is the matriarch on set. What does Gillian bring to the part of Thatcher?
The role of Margaret Thatcher is such a hard character to play because there are many people that have opinions about her. She was a divisive political figure. Gillian has a sort of razor-sharp focus. I know she has spent months and months and months trying to scrape underneath the surface of Margaret Thatcher. I think this is probably one of the hardest roles that she’s done because you’re stepping into the shoes of someone that everyone has an opinion about. Gillian’s performance is very nuanced, and it might make the audience think a little bit more about who the real Margaret Thatcher was.
Why was Emma the right person to play Diana?
When she stepped into the room, she had that amazing quality of vulnerability and strength. When we brought Emma in for the third casting session she was incredibly emotional. I remember saying to her, ‘your life is going to change now very quickly, you’re going to experience things that Diana experienced and that you should draw on that.’ >>

THE CROWN
Series Four Summary...
At the end of the 1970s, the Royal Family is preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by finding an appropriate bride for Prince Charles; still unmarried at 30. When Lord Mountbatten is assassinated by the IRA the family is rocked to its core and Charles loses his mentor. In the wake of that grief, a young Lady Diana Spencer enters the frame and the die is cast. Their wedding in 1981 is an occasion which unites the entire country in celebrating this seeming fairytale romance. As the season progresses and relations between the Waleses become strained, so too do relations between the Queen and her Prime Minister, Britain’s first female Prime Minister – Margaret Thatcher. Though on paper the two women seem to be cut from the same cloth, they often disagree about the appropriate governance of the country and the Queen’s constitutional obligation to remain silent is put to the test. By the end of the season the Prime Minister is ousted by her own cabinet after eleven and a half turbulent years in power, and the Queen finds herself head of an increasingly disunited family. Set between 1979 and 1990, season four will take viewers to incredible places including South Georgia, where the invasion of the Falkland Islands sets Britain on a war footing, and across the world to Australia, where the Waleses embark on a politically sensitive tour after republican Prime Minister Bob Hawke has been elected. Viewers also revisit Balmoral Castle, where both Thatcher and Diana will be subjected to the infamous ‘Balmoral Tests,’ and the beaches of Mustique, where Princess Margaret retreats during a difficult period in her life. n

>> I am so happy with what she has brought to the screen. I think people are going to be completely and utterly wowed by her. How much effort is it to turn a location like Burghley or Belvoir into a royal palace?
Martin Childs and Alison Harvey are our designers. They do the most extraordinary job every season. When I arrive on set first thing in the morning and I walk in one of the rooms that they’ve set-decorated and set designed, every time it’s just ‘wow.’ They have the task of moving The Crown through the seasons without being too heavy handed with it but being representative of that time and of that era. They find things that have a trigger for us as an audience.
There are things that take us back to a visceral memory with those fabrics, colours, and props. All of these things are inherently what create the feeling of a season. The research team too has been there since season one. They have grown, not just in the size, but also in terms of their confidence. There hasn’t been a TV show that I’ve ever worked on that has that amount of real knowledge of the subject matters that they are dealing with. What will the reaction be to season four?
We try our best with each season and we wouldn’t let it out of the door if we didn’t think that it was the best version that it could probably be. At some point every shoot runs

Crown Jewels: Facts & Figures... How many locations are used in total for series four of The Crown? Roughly 90 locations. About 75% of filming takes place on location. What has been the most challenging prop item to source? Food with the right packaging and old mobile phones. How many photo frames of the principle cast are there? There are about 70 silver photo frames of different characters for all the sets. What props are on the Queen’s desk? Various racing related objects - a horseshoe pen holder, horse hoof letter opener, bespoke Royal ER gilt embossed stationery blotters and diaries, lots of photos of her family (particularly her father). Also bespoke leather frames made – again – with the Royal crest embossed on them. How many cigarette holders did Helena have as Princess Margaret? There were about 12 options overall but Helena picked a favourite and pretty much used that one, it’s a thick horn cigarette holder. The only time she would use a daintier holder would be during a party scene on occasion. She had approximately eight different antique cigarette cases, but again she had a couple of favourites that she used more regularly than others. How many Corgis are featured? Mainly featured are two Corgis, called Lily and Prince. From time to time there are additional Corgis to form a larger family/royal group of Corgis for bigger setups, including puppies. Which cars does the Queen drive? She is driven in a Rolls Royce Phantom VI. She drives a series two Land Rover (‘Defender’) in Balmoral.
out of money and runs out of time, so it’s never as good as you would like it to be. I shrug when people say ‘I prefer season one or season two,’ I don’t know what that means. Beside that, grandfathers are watching with granddaughters; mothers are watching with daughters, fathers are watching with daughters, or sons. The Queen has been sort of central in absolutely everybody’s lives since the minute they took their first breath. The fact that she’s as central to your grandfather’s life as she is to your mother’s, as she is to your daughter’s or our son’s is extraordinary. People make sense of The Crown in individually different ways, which is still remarkable to me. n
How many audiences between the Prime Minister and the Queen took place this season? There are a total of 11 audiences between Elizabeth and Thatcher in the series. How many wigs does each principal character have? Six wigs each, taking a minimum of three weeks to create.
Most of these were bought from the company The Queen actually uses, Launer of London. How many fittings does each cast member have until a costume is ready? Usually two or three but can be up to four if it is a complicated piece for instance, Diana’s wedding dress or The Queen’s trooping of the colour riding habit. How many uniforms feature in this series? Approximately 1,500 uniforms, for Trooping of the Colour and there were a lot of foreign uniforms for Mountbatten’s funeral. The biggest uniform day was the Falklands Victory Parade which featured all three forces. How many prime ministers in the Queen’s reign? Boris makes 14! How many Prime Ministers featured in the Crown so far? We’ve seen eight. How many Royal residences are there? In total there are 23. These are: Buckingham Palace (London), Windsor Castle (Windsor), Palace of Holyroodhouse (Edinburgh), Hillsborough Castle (Ireland), Sandringham House (Norfolk), Balmoral Castle (Aberdeenshire), Craigowan Lodge (Aberdeenshire) Clarence House (London), Highgrove House (Gloucestershire), Llwynywermod (Carmarthenshire, Wales), Tamarisk (Isles of Scilly), Birkhall (Aberdeenshire), Kensington Palace (London), Anmer Hall (Norfolk), Frogmore (Windsor), St James’s Palace (London), Gatcombe Park (Gloucestershire), Ivy Cottage (Kensington Palace), The Royal Lodge (Windsor), Bagshot Park (Surrey), Barnwell Manor (Northamptonshire), Wren House (Kensington Palace and Thatched House Lodge (Richmond). How many Royal residences feature in The Crown? Eight; Buckingham Palace, Balmoral, Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace, Sandringham, Highgrove, Clarence House, Gatcombe Park.
How many costumes does each series necessitate? Around 400 in total. The total number of costumes made for the Queen are 120, for Diana that figure is 80 individual pieces.
How often do the audiences between the Queen and Prime Minister take place? The Queen meets the Prime Minister for at least 30 minutes every Tuesday when the House of Commons is sitting.
How many handbags does the Queen have? She has a collection of 86! We used six handbags.
How many audiences did Thatcher and the Queen have? We’ve calculated they had over 200. n

By Royal Appointment: Frescoes by Verrio Over 90 filming locations were used during the filming of The Crown. Mark Walledge is the production’s Supervising Locations Manager and says that working at Belvoir Castle and Burghley House created super locations for the series. In previous seasons of The Crown, Belvoir Castle’s driveway and its exterior has been used to represent Windsor Castle, and the castle’s Elizabeth Saloon and Regent’s Gallery are used as the Queen’s private reception rooms. Burghley House features heavily in series four, with Josh O’Connor’s Prince Charles courting Lady Diana Spencer in the Heaven Room, the same room in which HM The Queen delivered her 25th wedding anniversary speech at the end of series three. Verrio’s Heaven Room is just one of the state rooms in Burghley House and its fresco is regarded as the artist’s greatest masterpiece. It depicts ‘Gods and Goddesses disporting themselves, as Gods and Goddesses are wont to do…!’ and even features a cameo of the artist at the forge of the cyclops. Verrio painted a number of frescoes at Windsor Castle, of which only three have survived fire or reconstruction works. His Banquet of the Gods fresco in the King’s Dining Room was completed in 1684. Verrio then worked at Burghley, completing the Hell Staircase in 1697. It was his last commission before Verrio went blind and the artist was unable to complete The Heaven Room, which was finished by Thomas Stothard in 1799. n

PORTRAITS FOR NHS HEROES
A PICTURE of
HEROISM
If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that heroes working in the NHS are constantly under pressure to deliver world class healthcare and compassion often under extreme circumstances. Artist Tom Croft was acutely aware of the fact, and launched the Portraits for NHS Heroes campaign. Rutland artist Tina Firkins was one of thousands who responded… Words: Rob Davis.
IT’S DIFFICULT TO FIND any joy in the difficulties that 2020 presented, but if there’s a a single glimmer of positivity to come out of a disruptive year, it’s the renewed appreciation that the country has for the NHS. Often, when we consider or discuss the NHS, its as a single entity. But the NHS is not an entity in and of itself, but rather a complex, sprawling organisation with, at its extremities, hard-working people. That’s why, in March 2020, artist Tom Croft appealed to fellow artists to create portraits of NHS heroes amid Covid to show the faces behind the fight. One of those artists was Rutland and Stamford’s Tina Firkins, whose gratitude for the hard work of individuals in the NHS led her back to a long-time family friend who was delighted to have her portrait painted as part of the project. What Tina did not realise, though, is that the portraits would later be added to a coffee table book comprising 350 images of NHS keyworkers. “I was raised in Sussex and schooled in Brighton, then at Worthing Art College,” says Tina, speaking from her Rutland home. “Having studied Theatre Design I spent a decade working in regional theatre, as well as London, including productions for the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House.” “Generally I’d paint theatre backdrops using theatre emulsion which is flatter and has higher pigmentation to ensure bold colours under stage lighting. The largest backdrop I created was about 25 metres wide. It was for the stage production of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and featured black and white images of culturally significant women – Marilyn Monroe; Judy Garland; Billie Holliday.” “We relocated from Sussex in the late 1990s when I became the artist in residence for Northampton’s Royal Theatre and my husband Gary worked as a journalist for EMAP in Peterborough. We moved first to Broughton and then to Stamford which was a convenient commute from both locations.” “We moved to Stamford in 2002 and enjoyed 16 happy years there, meeting Becca Burney, whose portrait I would paint for the Portraits for NHS Heroes project and eventually for the book.” >> Main: Tina Firkins is one of a number of artists who have contributed to creating portraiture of NHS keyworkers for an online exhibition and a new book.

PORTRAITS FOR NHS HEROES
>> “Becca’s mum Helen was also a nurse and living opposite the family I came to know them well. Becca was our first babysitter following the birth of our first child Holly in 2002, and we soon came to trust her.” “The whole family has the values of the NHS running through them. They’re so kind, caring and hard-working. Becca is really organised and so delightful.” “At the time she was studying in sixth form in Stamford and is now a Senior House Officer at Rotherham General Hospital.” “In recent years I’ve begun working in the theatre again and I’ve been commissioned to paint portraits of clients’ homes, and to produce work to sell at craft fairs. I’ve also discovered lino printing and enjoy creating botanical and natural subjects but also local scenes like Fineshade Woods and pretty villages like Morcott and Ketton.” “With an interest in art I also follow portrait artists like Thomas Croft on social media, which was where I first heard about his Portraits for NHS Heroes project.” “The government locked the country down to restrict the spread of Covid in March 2020,” says Tom. “As a painter I am used to spending time working alone in my studio so assumed this wouldn’t be too much of a change to my normal routine, at least work wise.” “I like some background noise to work along to, so my brain is partially on the process of painting but with some white noise too, to distract me from doubt, so I usually have the radio on.” “Unlike, say, Brexit which totally dominated the news at the time, there were at least other news stories around and live sport, music and theatre to punctuate it. This was one event though, globally, totally relentless, bleak, scary and completely tragic. If we were lucky enough to make it through the physical threat and dangers the economic impact would be devastating for everyone. I listened to too much rolling news to be healthy for me.” “I couldn’t find any focus in my work because frankly it seemed completely pointless in the grand scheme of things. I did take some comfort though that I wasn’t alone – other artists I spoke to and followed on social media seemed to be struggling in the same way.”
“So I thought about it. What is the point of a portrait? It is an artistic representation of somebody, in my case a painting or drawing. Ideally with a good physical likeness. Then if it’s a good portrait it can go deeper below the surface and say more about the subject than just a snapshot. Unlike a selfie that is just a split second in time.” “Done well it can be a more considered overview of them as a person and give a sense of the essence of who they really are. Character and personality can all be captured or referenced in a successful portrait.” “In the past portraits have been seen as a status symbol, or produced to celebrate someone, mark some significant achievements, milestones and potentially to elevate that person in the eyes of others.”
“Who, I felt, should be immortalised today? The people who really made a difference and stepped up, in our latest darkest hour...”
One of the artists keen to contribute was Tina, who had the perfect subject in mind. “For a milestone birthday I was celebrating, I had booked myself onto a portraiture course,” says Tina. “That was cancelled which was a shame as I was really looking forward to working in oils and to learning portraiture. Instead I decided to contact Becca and ask if I could paint her to contribute to the project and happily she love the idea.” “Becca sent me a few photos to work from. There were some with PPE on and others without. I wanted to paint the face behind the mask so that Becca’s personality could come through, but I liked that in the image I chose to work from she was wearing her scrubs and had her stethoscope around her neck.” “I created a few preliminary pencil sketches over the course of about three hours and then started work in late April. I think I’ve put about 50 hours into the portrait in total, but over about a month or so.” “On one day I painted all day. I was home schooling at the time so to dedicate that much time to it in a single sitting was unusual but I was ‘in the zone’ and I was working on Becca’s mouth which I really wanted to get just right. The eyes were the hardest part and I think I painted them several times.”
“A portrait is a permanent physical record of someones existence. It also immortalises people, as the portraits are likely to last far longer than the subjects.”
“The Healthcare Heroes exhibition went live in the summer and is still visible via the Google Arts & Culture website (at artsand culture.google.com/project/healthcare-heroes).”
“So who should be immortalised today? The people who line the walls of galleries and have future generations look back on are the people who really made a difference and stepped up, in our latest darkest hour.”
But unexpectedly in August I was told that my portrait of Becca has been selected for inclusion in a new book that would feature about 350 of the images in the exhibition.”
“The people who put self interest and self preservation to one side and literally risked their lives knowingly on a daily basis for our well being. The NHS workers. Absolutely.” “So I posted a video on Instagram saying I would like to paint a free portrait to the first NHS Key Worker to contact me.” Tom was inundated with requests from NHS workers touched by the offer. He appealed for other portrait artists to contribute to an online exhibition which would eventually comprise nearly 800 different portraits.
“I was absolutely thrilled and when the book was published on 12th November both Becca and I were so proud that she has been included! We should all take pride in all of the NHS’s brilliant and professional people,” says Tina. “It’s a collective effort of many individuals and sadly some of those who have had their portraits painted and are included in the book have since died of Covid, so to put faces to names and to show the very people on the front like, caring for us all is, I think, so very important.” n
Find Out More: Tina Firkins is a Rutland and Stamford based artist who is currently accepting commissions for portraits (www.tinafirkins.co.uk, tina@tinafirkins.co.uk, 07903 720097). Tina’s oil-based portrait of NHS keyworker Dr Becca Burney of Stamford can be seen in the Portraits for NHS Heroes book, published by Bloomsbury which will raise money for NHS Charities Together. It’s available in hardback at www.bloomsbury.com, for £22.50 and comprises 350 portraits, with 224 pages.

excessive charges and penalties. To counter-act these potentially damaging fees, it is important to review what you currently have and compare your portfolio with alternative options. It may not be suitable for everyone, but it can be beneficial to look at consolidating your investments into a more flexible and diverse strategy, which could help to give you more transparent administration, lower costs and more control.
Trimming the fat from your finances and whipping your money into shape is a goal, which I believe, all of us should be doing. Afterall, if you don’t prepare for the future now, will you ever have enough? There is an increasing feeling of anger and unrest amongst 60-somethings at the moment, who feel that their lack of planning will cost them their ability to retire. Believing that they would be able to rely on the State, pre-retirees are now faced with 10 more years’ hard labour, and face even more uncertainty in relation to COVID-19. Even those who did put money aside are being faced with complex legislation, disjointed planning and excessive charges that threaten to erode their wealth. It’s a ‘BabyBoomer’ crisis! But it is never too late, as long as you take action. If you don’t want to have a future of uncertainty, the prospect of never retiring, or not having sufficient wealth to enjoy your later years, it’s time to detox your finances. 1. GET ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH A FINANCIALLY FIT PLAN. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you ever get there? By deciding on your future goals now, you will be able to assess how much you will need in the future, how much you need to save now, and what actions you could take to safeguard your wealth. THE FASHION EXPERT
A New Look for
NEW YEAR It’s nearly New Year’s Eve, and traditionally this is the time we look at ourselves and wish we were different. But what if we didn’t? What if we looked in the mirror and liked what we saw? Emma Beaver is the personal shopper and stylist determined to make sure that people are empowered by their wardrobe, not intimidated by it… Words: Rob Davis.
HANDS UP if there’s something about yourself you’d change. Everyone now has their hands in the air, I’d have thought. Some marketing, after all, is predicated on creating problems to solve. Fine lines and wrinkles? Try this face cream. Lifeless hair? We’ve a conditioner for that. Looking a bit last season? Here’s this season’s collection… That’s a cynical position, but only to a certain some degree. Whilst treating ourselves to some decent cosmetics or a trip to the hairdressers or embarking on a shopping spree can be a pleasure, traditionally there’s been great pressure on women especially – but everyone generally – to pay attention to their appearance, historically by undermining our confidence in it. But the fashion world is changing. And now, making people feel bad is a recognisably poor way to market a product. Empowerment replaces intimidation, and nobody exemplifies that more than Emma Beaver, the area’s personal shopper and stylist, whose mission statement is to make everyone look good and feel good irrespective of their body or their budget. What Emma doesn’t know about fashion isn’t to be known. That’s because for over a decade she has worked at the heart of the industry, as a clothing designer and buyer at many different price points with the industry, happily watching the fashion industry slowly becoming more virtuous.
Emma’s experience, however, has also ensured she’s armed with a working knowledge of the tricks of the trade within the industry, and so she has amassed a wealth of insider information which makes her insight into your wardrobe and the way you shop absolutely invaluable.
fashion, along with concepts like sustainability and ethical production. Nonetheless it did inspire me enough to enrol at the London School of Fashion which was a wonderful experience. I was just a stone’s throw from Oxford Street and Bond Street. I was right in the heart of fashion industry… and I loved it!
So this month, to ensure you feel warm and fuzzy when you open the wardrobe door – instead of deflated and intimidated – who better to ask than the very person who has traditionally been competing for your clothing spend?
What was your big break?
What’s a fashion stylist?
During my sandwich year I worked at Debenhams as a trainee buyer. It was about 2006 and I would work alongside Jasper Conran or John Rocha; huge names in the industry. After that I went to work at Next, which has been one of the most consistently successful and well-regarded retailers across the UK.
It’s somebody who can give objective and honest advice to help you dress better, quicker and easier. It’s someone who will make you feel good, regardless of body shape or the budget you have available for your wardrobe.
What were your earliest memories of fashion?
I knew I loved fashion from the age of nine or 10. One of my earlier memories was watching The Clothes Show with my late mum. It was presented by Selina Scott and Jeff Banks, and I remember it seemed very glamorous, with catwalks and models. It was a programme very much of its time, when fashion was allowed to be elitist and special, with some very severe looking models. Today’s market is more characterised by inclusively and the democratisation of
My degree was a four-year course in Fashion Management, and included an education in the role of business and the supply chain in the fashion industry as well as considering the design of our products.
A coveted job?
The recruitment process lasted two days and it was rigorous. There are only 30 or so places which open up each year and there are thousands of applicants not only because the retailer is so big and respected, but because the company is brilliant at educating its team. Next has a ‘buying school,’ which is essentially a post-graduate on-the-job education at the UK’s most successful retailer. >>

THE PERSONAL SHOPPER AND FASHION STYLIST
I worked on everything from ladieswear from 2008-2012 to nightwear, beachwear, jewellery, lingerie, and HGS (industry-speak for hats, gloves and scarves!) so I gained a huge amount of experience in all of the main areas of retail fashion and absolutely loved my time there. Where did you go next?
I was holding out for a job at Joules because it’s a great British brand, I loved their products and their story. Recruitment for the role I wanted was put on hold for a few months so I spent some time working for the George label at Asda, which was interesting because I saw a difference in the approach that a supermarket retailer has to a fashion retailer and I got to experience a different price point in the market. It would be easy to dismiss supermarket fashion as cheap and functional but actually the George brand always strives for quality and it’s very well made for its price point. My persistence paid off though and four months later I was offered the position at Joules that I’d been coveting, and after a short while I became the ladieswear buyer for the brand. What was that like?
Again, its was a completely different corporate culture, but every bit as brilliant as I had hoped. Tom Joule and some of his family were involved in the day to day running of the company and there’s a real close knit, welcoming feel to the place. It’s less corporate, more like an extended family and it’s design-led, where talking about stunning prints and beautiful colour every day for hours on end is very normal! It was really good fun and even as a buyer I had more input into the structure of our ranges, but I also worked alongside some amazing creatives who would look out of the office window, see sheep grazing in the countryside in this wonderful pastoral landscape, and then design the most incredible floral prints. And then you worked with Yours?
Yes, a similar-sized company to Joules, it was started in a similar way with one person identifying an opportunity; a local man who was a market trader in his early career and now has the largest market share in the UK for plus-size clothing and 165 shops. The company specialises in clothing from sizes 16-40 and I spent nearly five really good years there from 2015. 36
It’s a really progressive retailer and our ‘fit models’ were larger than the rest of the industry which gave us a really good insight into how to design ranges which flattered larger busts or fuller figures. As a company it has always been good at being faithful to its market and serving that market to the best of its ability, with good designs and good quality products. It’s a textbook example of what a good retailer should do. Are plus-size fashions a new industry consideration?
For a number of years the average dress size in the UK has been 16, but typically the ‘fit models’ right across the industry are a size 12. The keenness to reflect real-world body shapes and to make people feel good about their bodies is just one way the industry is changing for the better, alongside sustainability, ethical manufacturing and ensuring quality at every price point.
How does a trend become a product?
Generally a buyer or a designer will identify a commercial opportunity in a trend and a collection is created accordingly. So if a trend for next winter is identified – let’s say, mustard colours – the higher price-point manufacturers will follow that trend. After top-end design houses, brands like Zara might have something ready for market in size in four to six weeks after the public sees it on the catwalk; a retailer like Next follows three to six months later and then retailers who target an older customer roughly a year after the trend’s catwalk appearance. Buyers influence designers to create a sort of shopping list for their collection, so a retailer’s spring and summer collection might necessitate, for instance, eight long-sleeved dresses, 12 short sleeve dresses and six sleeveless dresses, plus t-shirts, jackets and so on. A number of items are designed by the retailer and these are created in sample forms by the factories that would make them. Next there’s a trip to the factory. What happens there?
“I worked on everything from ladieswear to menswear, beachwear, lingerie, and HGS (industry-speak for hats, gloves and scarves!)...” How are new clothing ranges designed?
To some extent, new trends trickle down from the catwalks of high-end designers. They can have the longest lead time due the design process and complexity of the garments and the rest of the industry to some degree takes its inspiration from them. Seasonality, the catwalks and broader trends in consumerism all might influence in terms of the tone and mood of a new collection but industry influences like fabric fairs and yarn fairs – typically taking place in Italy – can also contribute ideas. This is often where the creatives from the top design houses will go to get inspiration for colour or texture. Add these to changes in socio-economics, art, lifestyle etc., and fashion trends are born.
Trips to factories are necessary and a fascinating part of a buyer’s job. Of the samples in your collection, you’ll look at the samples created, tweak the fitting, size and details of each item and ‘rack up’ your proposed range, negotiating prices as part of the process. That eventual choice will be made and shipped back to the UK for you to present to your retailer’s management and when they’re signed off you’ll book in your range and give the manufacturers your order. How many of each item is made?
That definitely depends on the brand and the price point of each item. Your anticipated best selling pieces might be produced in quantities of 15,000 units, but a ‘halo piece’ which will feature heavily in the publicity for your range might be produced in quantities of ‘just’ 3,000. How much does an item cost to make?
Taking a shirt as an example for a mid price point high street retailer, manufacturing costs – material and labour – might account for £5-8 of the cost. It’ll take another 50p to get that item back to the UK on a boat, plus another 60-90p in duty. China’s duty amounts to around 12% for some items, and a few
R&S Pride JAN 222.qxp 24/11/2020 13:45 Page 37
years ago Bangladesh dropped their duty to 0% in order to stimulate growth. Certainly you end up with a shirt in your warehouse for under £10. Then there is the running of the shops, paying staff, the head office costs, warehousing, distribution, marketing etc., so the actual profit per item sold to the retailer is very small. But there are economies of scale in the industry. A small independent manufacturer might put in an order for a 500 run of garments whilst Primark might have a 50,000 manufacturing run for some items.
What is interesting is that factories usually work for customers across a whole range of price points. In one factory I visited, a supermarket’s ranges were being produced on the ground floor, an independently owned High Street fashion firm’s products on the second floor and on the top floor, Burberry products were being made. As workers become more skilled at their jobs, they work their way up in the company, literally and in terms of their wage. Will we always have cheap clothing?
Buyers always want to make their clothing last but there’s always the pressure of a price point, and the public are aware that quality is always commensurate with a product’s price point.
So-called fast fashion – produced quickly and sold cheaply by retailers such as Primark – is incredibly popular. Consumers will always want cheap clothing no matter how wealthy they are, because we all need a wardrobe of basics for when we’re walking the dog or doing the gardening.
There are more labour-intensive and less labour-intensive ways to make something, better and poorer quality fabrics. That plays a part. But some cheaper clothing is better quality and some expensive brands are poorly made… it’s persuasive, but not a hard and fast rule. That’s where smart shopping – and my keen eye – can be useful.
But consumers are much more acute as to the implications of international supply chains today and aware of issues like the amount of water needed to manufacture a pair of jeans or the need to ensure fair working practices and living wages. To accommodate those standards there will need to be a slight shift in manufacturers’ business models.
Does expensive mean a better garment?
We will still have cheap clothing in the future, but my prediction is that fashion from retailers like Primark will rise by a pound or two to ensure ethical practices are maintained. I use Primark as an example, actually their business practices are good and as a retailer they’re popular. Their products are manufactured very well, especially at the price point they sell at, and on a recent trip into the city I saw people queuing to go into Primark but not to enter John Lewis, which I think says something about its popularity. What about the ethics of selling fashion?
Good body image is now recognised across the industry and fashion is rightly seen as something that should empower you and give you confidence, not something you should be judged on. There’s no such thing as the wrong shaped body or having too small a budget to look good. Retailers recognise this but still consumers need to have confidence, especially women. Without being genderist, it’s women, for the most part, who still find their confidence can be made or broken by their choice of outfit, which is a shame. >>

THE PERSONAL SHOPPER AND FASHION STYLIST
“Having good underwear is super crucial. I’ve a very good eye for a correct fitting bra and owning at least two or three of them is really important...” >> Is that where a stylist comes in?
Absolutely. There have been books and magazine articles written, TV shows filmed about how to dress… but it’s such a personal journey, so emotional and individual, that only a private, one-to-one consultation can work effectively to give someone guidance and inspire confidence. What does a stylist do?
There are all sorts of reasons someone might get in touch. Sometimes it’s a consultation for a one-off outfit – for a wedding for example – or for a wardrobe refresh, or for the creation of a new capsule wardrobe or a complete style overhaul. Sometimes there’s a trigger. It could be that they’ve just come out of a relationship, changed their job, the onset of menopause, even… usually it’s something that’s related to someone’s confidence, as much as their wardrobe. It starts with a phone call and an informal chat, I’ve a questionnaire too, which I ask my clients to fill in. It usually takes an hour, but it’s fun, too. I advise them to sit down and make the time over a glass of wine or a coffee. After that the service is really personal. I can visit them at home, look through their existing wardrobe, create a ‘love this’ rail and a dump bin. It usually takes several hours but it’s amazing how a fresh look at your wardrobe can help you to rediscover pieces you already have and use them in new ways. What happens then?
We put a client’s wardrobe back together, usually organising it by theme – casual, work, formal – and by colour. From that we can really analyse where there are any gaps in the wardrobe, and together create a shopping list of anything that’s missing. Are there usually fashion ‘staples?’
Everyone is different but a good pair of comfortable, well-made jeans, a white blouse
that fits well, nice knitwear and a good coat are items that everyone should have. The secret is knowing how to buy well. How do you do that?
I’ve the ability to look at an item with a forensic eye, knowing what stitch has been used, whether there are any weak points in its creation. You don’t have to spend a fortune to choose something of really good quality, but buying well is something that someone with experience of design and manufacturing within the industry can help with. And you end up saving money?
Most of the time – especially if I’m doing my job correctly – the cost of my consultation is offset by the fact that together, my client and I can buy better and get more wear from each purchase. You’ll be amazed how many unworn items with their labels still on can be found in ladies’ wardrobes. I aim to make myself ‘cost neutral’ and ensure I save clients money in the long run. Do you shop with clients?
Most of the time, in fact, I shop alone but on their behalf. I’m quite disciplined so it’s a faster way to get around places, clients don’t spend their time in changing rooms and I can really focus on what they need. I always agree a budget with a client beforehand and I always pick up, say, a size 12 and a size 14 for a particular item, sending back the poorer fitting option. That way they’re not under pressure to try things on quickly in a tight changing room which can lead to ‘making do’ with something. How much do you aim to purchase?
That depends very much on the client’s needs, their budget and their lifestyle. As a rule I think eight pieces plus whatever the client has in their wardrobe already should yield about 18 outfits.
Then it’s back to the client’s house?
We can try on items in the privacy of a client’s own home, which is always a better option, they can see how they look in their mirror with their lighting. The change in posture as someone tries on an item or a combination is a very telling sign they are happy with how they look and seeing this feels great and is really rewarding. The idea is empowering someone and showing how to make the most of their body and their wardrobe. Do you also advise on accessories?
A good belt is crucial, as are items like scarves and jewellery. Handbags tend to be personal, but yes, accessories are important. Underwear is super crucial so that’s integral to the whole skill of personal styling, but having worked in the underwear trade at Next, I’ve a very good eye for a correct fitting bra. Owning two or three really good fitting bras is, again, really important. What style advice do you have generally?
We all make impulse purchase and most of us come to regret them. Buy well and buy quality is a good rule of thumb. But above all, nobody ever shows you how to shop, and the only advice most women expose themselves to is the well-meaning opinions of friends who might be more tactful than honest, or glossy magazines. A professional wardrobe consultation will yield not just better items in your wardrobe, but the confidence to wear them knowing that someone has given advice that’s objective, honest and in your interest. And final words?
Looking good and feeling confident is not a privilege, it’s a right. Irrespective of your body shape or your budget you can – and should – look great and feel great too. And that’s exactly what my advice is based on, every single time. n

Laxton Junior School
“A happy school, with wellbeing at its centre...”
Laxton Junior School, set in the heart of the beautiful market town of Oundle and an intrinsic part of Oundle School, prides itself on being an incredibly happy school. Five core values sit at the heart of an LJS education: care, a love of learning, opportunity, community and quality and these values run like invisible threads through the school. Nothing can emulate the actual experience of walking round a school in action, peering into classrooms and feeling the happiness and energy of pupils and staff. At LJS, where parents so often comment on the ‘fizzing’ atmosphere and the ‘obvious joy in learning,’ there has been much discussion on how best to replicate this virtually. This has resulted in a series of mini ‘fly on the wall’ documentaries filmed during the during
the autumn of 2020, with live moments in classrooms flanked by interviews with teachers talking passionately about their approach and their pupils. Rachel Waterhouse, Assistant Head, Admissions said: “Action packed School videos may show a lot, but actually say very little. From the outset, we were determined that our videos should provide an authentic insight into our school.” “It wasn’t about creating a perfect marketing product, but rather about bringing LJS to life and giving an authentic glimpse into the sounds, relationships and genuine delight of LJS.” n To discover more about LJS and to watch the virtual visits, please visit laxtonjunior.org.uk/virtual-visits. Children are enthusiastic, curious and are learning good skills to help them move on. The youngest children respond to staff ’s interaction with smiles and sounds, and some are beginning to use words. Staff are good at making use of spontaneous opportunities to help children learn.” n For more information call 01572 823680 or see www.uppinghamnursery.co.uk.

KATHERINE OF ARAGON IN PETERBOROUGH
UNEASY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE
CROWN
Of all the historical characters associated with Peterborough Cathedral, Katharine of Aragon – the first of Henry VIII’s six wives – is undoubtedly the most fascinating. Her tomb in the city’s Cathedral is an essential stop for visitors, especially during January’s festival dedicated to her memory... Words: Rob Davis, Tilly Wilkinson.
KATHARINE OF ARAGON was an incredible woman, and arguably the most worthy out of all six of Henry’s wives. She suffered the death of a husband, the death of several of her children, and she was one of the first women to go through a divorce in England.
history to be given such a role. After succeeding his father to the throne, Henry VIII married Katharine in June 1509. Henry seems to have married his brother’s widow through some genuine affection rather than for dynastic reasons.
She remained strong throughout her hardships, and contrary to the ladies who followed her position as Queen, she survived to 51... that’s a 16 year longer than average life expectancy during Tudor times. Buried in nearby Peterborough Cathedral in January 1536, each year around the day of her death, the Cathedral celebrates her life.
Sadly Katharine was unable to produce a living male heir – something Henry regarded as essential for the continuation of his dynasty – giving birth instead to six children with only one of them, Queen Mary I, surviving infancy.
Katharine was born in December 1485 at Alcalá de Henares in Spain, daughter of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella. Today Alcalá de Henares is Peterborough’s Spanish twin town to celebrate this historic association. Katharine came to England to marry Prince Arthur, the eldest son and heir of Henry VII, in November 1501. This was part of a diplomatic settlement between the countries. He died in 1502 after six months of marriage, and Katharine swore throughout her life that the marriage had never been consummated. Katharine’s status remained uncertain, although she was appointed as the Spanish ambassador to the English court in 1507, the first woman in European
For much of their marriage, the relationship seems to have been good; Katharine was married to Henry VIII for longer than all of his other five marriages put together. She was left as Regent in his absence whilst he was away fighting in France in 1513, during which her forces defeated an attempted invasion by the Scots. As was common royal practice, Henry took a series of mistresses and produced several illegitimate children. However, when Anne Boleyn arrived at the court, Henry became absolutely besotted with her. She refused to become a mistress and Henry realised he could only have the woman he loved, and a possible male heir by her, if his marriage to Katharine was annulled. >>
Opposite: The life of Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife, is retold in a new series screening on Amazon. Katherine and Henry VIII are portrayed by Charlotte Hope and Ruairi O’Connor.

Queen on the Small
SCREEN KATHERINE OF ARAGON’S STORY IS BROUGHT TO LIFE IN AN EIGHT-PART TV SERIES REVEALING THE QUEEN’S OWN LIFE BEFORE SHE MARRIED HENRY AND BECAME QUEEN...
The story of Katherine of Aragon is brought to live in The Spanish Princess, the drama series about Katherine’s life before marrying Henry VIII. The first series is available to stream now, whilst a new series is airing as Pride goes to press.
Her tomb in Peterborough Cathedral is marked Katharine, Queen of England.
>> In 1527 Henry asked Pope Clement to annul the marriage, but the Pope refused. The failure to get the annulment caused Henry to sack his chief minister, Cardinal Wolsey in 1530. Wolsey headed north, and spent Easter at Peterborough Abbey – now Cathedral – while he was en route. In 1532 Henry was proclaimed the Supreme head of the Church in England. In 1533 Katharine’s marriage to Henry was proclaimed invalid on the grounds that it was against canon law because of her previous marriage to his brother. Katharine was now referred to as the Dowager Princess of Wales and exiled to More Manor in Hertfordshire, Buckden Towers in Cambridgeshire and latterly to Kimbolton Castle, south of Peterborough. Katharine died at Kimbolton in January 1536, most likely of cancer. Before she died, she sent a letter to her ex-husband, stating ‘Lastly, I make this vow, that mine eyes desire you above all things. Farewell.’
“Before she died, Queen Katharine sent a letter to her ex-husband, stating ‘Lastly, I make this vow, that mine eyes desire you above all things. Farewell...’”
She was ordered by Henry to be buried at Peterborough Abbey deemed the nearest great religious house that befitted her status, whilst not giving her a burial in London since this may have been seen as politically ‘embarrassing.’ The funeral cortege, which left shortly after her death included a coffin wagon covered with black velvet – as were the six horses pulling it – heralds and fifty servants in black carrying torches, four banners in crimson taffeta and four golden standards. At the door of the abbey church, the body was received by four bishops and six abbots, and placed under a canopy lit by a thousand candles. She has been buried there ever since, but even her tombstone suffered hardships. Katharine’s tomb of gilded black marble was vandalised by Oliver Cromwell’s troops in April 1643, and the black marble was removed in the 1700s for lining the floor of the Dean’s summerhouse. The current memorial slab was installed in 1895 after a national campaign for the Katharines of England to all donate a penny to the cause, organised by the wife of one of the Cathedral canons, Katharine Clayton. Today Katharine is remembered annually by a commemorative service and series of events at the Cathedral. Visitors place pomegranates on her tombstone every year; her royal symbol. n
The first eight episodes centre on Katherine of Aragon, the beautiful teenage princess of Spain who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her lady-in-waiting Lina – an African Moor. Katherine is Princess of Wales now, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, her line to the throne seems lost… until she claims her marriage was never consummated and that as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir – the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry – who will one day rule as King Henry VIII. Series two sees the more mature Katherine in peril as The Great Plague ravages London and Henry’s court descends into anger, affecting the King’s mental health and endangering Katherine herself. n The Spanish Princess is now available on Amazon Prime, see www.amazon.co.uk.
n Katherine of Aragon’s tomb can be seen in Peterborough Cathedral. For more information on Katherine and events in January to celebrate her life, see www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk or call 01733 355315. You can also visit Peterborough Cathedral, Minster Precincts, Peterborough PE1 1XS.

GOOD LIFE LODGES
LUXURY on the WATERFRONT
If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that life’s too short not to live in comfort. Whether you want to enjoy lakeside living in luxury, downsize and free up capital, or invest in a place where the family can join you to make memories, you’ll find a luxurious new home on the waterfront at Tallington Lakes near Stamford... A luxurious home, that’s easy to maintain. Perhaps a second home if you split your time between Stamford and the capital. A place to live that allows you to downsize and frees up capital. A place for your family and friends to come and stay. A home to return to near Stamford if you’re planning a move elsewhere or you’re planning to live abroad. There are a number of answers to the question of ‘why,’ but very few to the question of ‘why not!’ As well as nationally renowned leisure and watersports facilities, Tallington Lakes is also home to 400 lodges and a friendly community of around 700 people. And with lakeside sites for brand new lodges still available, you too could enjoy lakeside living in an easy to maintain property with stunning views for little over £100,000. The Good Life Lodge Company is a sister company to Tallington Lakes and as well as the site near Stamford, it has three other UK sites too. The company’s lodges are two or three bedroomed properties, brand new and ready furnished; ready to move into with just a suitcase. Underfloor heating and en suite bathrooms are typical, and kitchens are equipped with new appliances including dishwasher, with some featuring built-in coffee machines, wine coolers and with utility rooms featuring washers and dryers. >>

The Crown
in UPPINGHAM Reopening The Crown in Uppingham in May 2020, Laura Totten was looking forward to her first year running her pub... it’s been an usual first year to say the least, but nothing will prevent her and her team making a success of the place! Words & Images: Rob Davis.
“You just can’t fake a warm welcome.” Many wise words have been spoken, but few as succinctly as those. Laura Totten is in her Uppingham pub, The Crown, on the town’s High Street. In ordinary circumstances it would be buzzing with diners and those enjoying a decent pint. For obvious reasons though, it’s not. Our visit during mid-November sees the hospitality industry once again curtailed pending full reopening, hopefully as Pride goes to press. It is certainly not how Laura imagined her first year in business but given how long she has waited to run her own place she’s not going to let a few bumps and lockdowns get her down. Laura says she fell into the hospitality trade by accident. We say it was destiny. Having attended university in Liverpool to study towards a distinctly un-hospitality related English, French & Psychology degree, Laura found herself working in pubs and bars to fund her study, eventually returned to the area and worked in Leicester’s Barceloneta on the city’s Queens Road. The plan was to work abroad and teach English as a foreign language, but she was offered a management position at the restaurant and the rest is history. After a long and varied career in hospitality management Laura took up a position with

Everards, finding great future business owners and helping them find a pub business they can call their own. Everards has 187 premises and Laura is full of praise for the way that the company works to support its business owners, she says her partnership with the brewery gives both the freedom to build her own independent business whilst also providing support from the central ‘home team’ if needed. A support that has been invaluable during this time with Everards doing everything within their means to put their pubs and publicans first even while work on their brand-new brewery at Everards Meadows was put on pause. It wasn’t long before Laura was itching to get back into business herself and when the pub she’d coveted – Uppingham’s Crown – became available, she leapt at the chance. Unfortunately, five days before she was due to start her new chapter, hospitality Armageddon ensued, and the first lockdown put everything on pause until she was able to pick up the keys at the end of May. “I knew what Uppingham was missing,” she says, “Because I was looking for it.” >>
The Food: “We’re lucky to have a great team who are all on the same page in respect of the food here. Our chef Dan Carrington has spent 15 years working in London and Spain, he has worked in some really prestigious restaurants and wants to bring quality and relaxed dining together.” The Philosophy: “We don’t think you can go wrong offering a warm welcome and bright, fun, vibrant food that makes you feel good.” Food Heaven: “We love the fact that our dishes are tapas-sized, which makes them versatile enough for grazing, sharing for light lunches and banqueting with friends. That versatility is matched by big flavours and satisfaction!” Food Hell: “Bad children’s menu food. Kids are valued customers too and they have a right to good food!” n

>> “Uppingham needed somewhere that didn’t mean a compromise on the quality of wine in order to get a great pint of real ale and offered something between fish ‘n’ chips and pheasant. A place that provided a warm welcome for all of the family, including the dog.” “You have to offer a point of difference, a unique selling point if you’re starting a new business, something that stands you apart from the rest of the local market, for us its our small plates menu and hand stretched sourdough pizzas ” The concept behind The Crown’s cuisine is small dishes drawn from across the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. That means around 20 tapas-sized options which provide sufficient adaptability to serve as grazing dishes over real ale or a glass of locally distilled Multum Gin Parvo or turn into banquet dining if you and friends find yourselves unencumbered by lockdown and are able to meet. Secondly, and as this year has illustrated very clearly, it is a business and a business in a fast moving industry, you have to be able to adapt to changing business needs as well as customer desires.” “Being able to turn on a penny and react to the ever changing guidelines and recent restrictions placed on hospitality businesses has enabled us to take this year in our stride and within a matter of days of this lockdown we have become a takeaway with click & collect functionality meaning we can make ends meet while looking after our customers.” “Way above and beyond both of these though, you have to really, genuinely enjoy people, meeting new people, getting to know customers, having a laugh or just taking time to listen. There is nothing better for me than knowing that I have made someone smile, even something as simple as knowing exactly how they like their drink, going completely
off menu to accommodate their child’s wants or just taking time to talk can make a difference to someone’s day and there aren’t many jobs where you can do that over and over again every day”

“I’m really lucky to have a great town in which to trade. When normal trading resumes, I’m looking forward to welcoming in families looking for a relaxed and informal meal whether it be straight from school, before evening clubs or just somewhere to have a great family meal without the fuss.” “We’re also running our Sunday lunch menu, which again has a ‘small dishes’ twist, allowing you to choose your preferred meat then add or share side dishes according to your preferences, which also helps us minimise waste, no one wants to see great veg go uneaten. With all of these elements, along with a brunch menu and awesome coffee and loose-leaf tea from local roasters Two Chimps, we’re aiming to provide a place to enjoy all day, every day.” n

In the KITCHEN The warming taste of nutmeg and just a hint of rum both feature in this feel-good cake perfect for winter. Enjoy it mid-morning with a cup of coffee!
FESTIVE SPICED LATTE CAKE Preparation time: 25 minutes. Cooking time: 50 minutes. Serves: 10. Ingredients: 250g melted unsalted butter, 300g self-raising white flour, 1 tsp baking powder 250g light brown soft sugar, ½ tsp ground nutmeg, plus a pinch more, ¼ tsp salt 1 tbsp instant coffee powder, plus 1 tsp, 75ml whole milk, 275g low-fat fresh vanilla custard 3 medium free range eggs, beaten, 4 tbsp golden caster sugar, 2 tbsp dark rum, 200ml whipping cream Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Use a little of the butter to grease a 23cm springform tin, then line the base. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the light brown soft sugar, a pinch of nutmeg and the salt. Mix well with your hands to smooth any lumps in the sugar, then make a well in the middle. In a cup, mix 1 tbsp coffee with 1 tbsp hot water. Stir into the melted butter with the milk, 175g custard and the eggs; whisk into the dry ingredients until smooth. Pour into the tin and bake for 50 minutes, until risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
While the cake bakes, mix 1 tsp coffee with 2 tbsp caster sugar, 1 tbsp water and 1 tbsp rum to make a syrup; set aside. Place the cake, in its tin, on a wire rack to cool. After 30 minutes, poke lots of holes into the top using a cocktail stick and brush with the coffee syrup. Once cooled completely, remove from the tin and put on a plate. Make a frothy topping by whipping the cream with the remaining 2 tbsp caster sugar and 1 tbsp rum until very thick, then fold into the remaining 100g custard. Spoon and spread the topping onto the cake, then use a fi ne sieve or tea strainer to dust with the remaining ½ tsp nutmeg.

In the KITCHEN These hotcakes are similar to an American-style pancake - wonderfully thick and fluffy with a lovely, light texture when cooked on the Aga. Serve a stack of these with the cardamom-scented blueberry syrup for an indulgent January brunch...!
BLUEBERRY, LEMON & RICOTTA HOTCAKES Preparation Time: 15 minutes. Cooking Time: 20 minutes. Serves two. Ingredients: 250g ricotta cheese, 90g self-raising flour, 50g caster sugar, three large free range eggs, separated , 2 lemons, zest, 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened, 2 tbsp extra thick half fat cream. For the syrup: 150g blueberries, 3 tbsp maple syrup, 4 cardamom pods, cracked open, ½ tsp vanilla extract For the syrup, put ½ the blueberries in a small saucepan with the maple syrup, cardamom and vanilla. Bring to the boil, then turn down to simmer gently for 3-4 minutes until the berries have just burst. Take off the heat, stir in the remaining blueberries and set aside to cool. For the hotcakes, put the ricotta, flour, sugar, egg yolks, lemon zest and a pinch of salt to a large mixing bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon. In a separate bowl, using electric beaters, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks, then fold into the ricotta mixture.
Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat with 1 tbsp butter. Fry 3 hotcakes at a time (it makes 6 in total), using 2 dessert spoonfuls of the mixture per hotcake, and frying for about 3 minutes on each side. Repeat with the remaining 1 tbsp butter and hotcake mixture. Serve with the blueberry syrup (discard the cardamom pods) and a dollop of cream. For a breakfast option, serve these pancakes with yogurt instead of cream. They also work well with orange zest instead of lemon.

Wine of the Month
Glenlivet comes of age with 18 year old Speyside malt...
Blue Aurora English Blueberry Dusk Wine, Oundle, Northants 2020
18 years in the making, Glenlivet is happy to lose the moody teenager and gain a well adjusted and mature single malt Speyside...
£17.95 / 37.5cl / 10.5% ABV
Over the course of 18 years Glenlivet’s Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, utilises first and second-fill American oak (for tropical fruitiness) and ex-sherry oak (for spicy complexity). The result is a single malt that is complex, elegant and balanced. Taste profile includes a ripe citrus flavour with a bite of winter spice and a nose of fruit and toffee. Gold colour and an apricot nose. £115 / 70cl / 43% ABV.
The Wine Cellar RAISE A GLASS TO THE END OF 2020 AND LOOK FORWARD TO A BETTER 2021... THIS MONTH WE’VE FESTIVE FIZZ, A DELICIOUS WINE FOR DUSK AND A NO-ALCOHOL OPTION... FORGET YOUR TROUBLES WITH BUBBLES: Let’s all drink to the end of a rotten 2020! 1. Bubbles on a budget from Laurent Perrier here, as delicate citrus and floral notes are prevalent over a lovely fine mousse of bubbles... and at £30, it’s a bargain! £30 / 75cl / 12% ABV.
2. Ordinarily we’d reserve some quite ‘Anglo Saxon’ language for the kind of monster who puts ice in Champagne, but Ice Imperial is the first – and only – Champagne designed to be consumed over ice... an unusual prospect! £49.99 / 75cl / 12% ABV.
3. And our showstopper? It’s a Bollinger, but not just any Bollinger. RD stands for Récemment Dégorgé, a sort of special edition aged on lees. £190 / 75cl / 12% ABV.
Blue Aurora is purely and simply made from 100% English blueberries, hand picked from Lutton Farm in Northamptonshire. The blueberries are pressed and fermented to create this beautiful medium dry wine which is crisp and deliciously fruity. Blue Aurora is purely and simply made from 100% English blueberries, hand picked in Oundle. The wine is produced by Lutton farm; a family run farm just outside the picturesque town by the Long family. Call 01832 273300 for stockists or buy direct at www.blueaurora wine.co.uk.
Alcohol-Free Ale for Designated Drivers
If you’re the designated driver, You can still raise a glass to 2021 with an alcohol-free tipple. Ordinarily these taste ghastly but Brewdog’s option has the taste of a really good bitter with lovely hoppiness and a nice citrus taste but none of the alcohol, meaning you can drive home in safety. The name, incidentally, is a snarky response to complaints that the company’s high ABV encouraged irresponsible drinking... but there’s nothing irresponsible about this! £4 / 3 x 330ml

HOMES & INTERIORS
ENJOY the VIEW This month’s featured property is an absolutely stunning home in Great Casterton. It’s an ideal place for a family with children, dogs, cats... and a fondness for parties! Here, we meet Stevie and Zoe Marriott and their twin boys at their beautifully presented house... Words: Rob Davis. Images: Dean Fisher.

‘It’s all too beautiful,’ begins the song Itchykoo Park, one of the Small Faces’ biggest hits. Stevie Marriott of Stamford was named after the group’s songwriter and musician but now, he and Zoe Marriott have their own hit on their hands, in the form of their family home... and it’s all too beautiful as well! Toll View is located near the hamlet of Great Casterton, conveniently close to the A1 and A606 near to where the former Great Roman Road toll would have been located. Stevie is from Stamford whilst Zoe lived in Peterborough and has been a property developer for most of her professional life. Toll View is the third home Stevie and Zoe have renovated together along with many properties for the business – Live In Style Rentals – which they run together. Main/Right: There’s a formal sitting room plus a generous living kitchen with dining and sitting areas.

Their experience in property is – to say the least – vast, which means when they came to create their forever home at Great Casterton, it was always going to be something special... but even so, look at the place; it’s breathtaking! “Our twin boys are now nine years of age, and when they were young we were looking to move back from Hampton – where we lived at the time – to Stamford, closer to the town’s excellent schools.” “We’d driven past the house before on our way to take the boys to football, and when we saw the property had come onto the market we were excited.” “Toll View is only 22 years old, built on the site of an old farmyard so it’s modern, there are great views and it’s in a great location. We moved straight in but felt there was still some scope for improving it.”
“The house is only 22 years old, so it’s modern, there are great views and it’s in a great location...” “We relocated the kitchen and replaced an existing conservatory with a new kitchen extension, extending a study to create a lot more living space. We also installed bi-fold doors, and now the space is really great for family life and for entertaining.” The kitchen now features living and dining areas, as well as spectacular views over the countryside. It also blurs the boundary between the property’s interior and exterior, making it a great party house. As part of their work, the couple did boring but necessary
jobs such as ensuring the roof was in good order and replacing the wiring and plumbing. Into the new space they installed a new kitchen from PDA Kitchens in Peterborough. “Simon from PDA was amazing! We’ve had a kitchen from him before and we were really happy with it. This one has cashmere white cabinets with Silestone engineered stone surfaces and appliances from Miele and Hotpoint. We’ve installed a Franke boiling water tap as well as a built-in steamer, warming drawer, microwave and steam oven.” “I hate wires, so everything is integrated and there’s no clutter. We’ve a separate utility, too, so all of the laundry appliances and family paraphernalia is out of the way too.” The property is arranged over two floors and has a sitting room and games room in 79

addition to the living kitchen. On the first floor are five bedrooms with a dressing room and en suite to the master bedroom and an en suite to the second bedroom. Each of the bathrooms features imported Italian tiles and bathroom fittings from Porcelanosa. The couple also enlisted Stamford’s Alex Clipston who trades as ‘The Builder’ to build a new master bedroom suite alongside a new garage, with the existing one converted into a games room. This was all completed as one project to extend and improve the property. The couple used Ashley Woodman and Nick Clipston of QKS to create all new windows throughout the property. The games room, is currently under the secondment of Jack and Ollie who use the room either to play pool, football or to flex their fingers on the latest PlayStation games. The fun and games continue in the summer 80

too with outdoor spaces included several terraces and a sunken seating area, and opted to install rendered planters with some low-maintenance shrubs to ensure that beyond an area of lawn ideal for sunbathing, the family enjoy a neat looking garden that’s maintenance free. “We absolutely love it here,” says Zoe. “There are three properties here, sufficiently spaced from each other to enable us to be a noisy family without disturbing the other households, but close enough to be a community... we keep in touch via our own What’s App group and look after each other’s houses when we’re away.” “It’s a busy, light, lively house with our dogs, cats and children all enjoying loads of space. We’re hoping to embark on another project, because it seems we can’t just sit down and enjoy the work once it’s done...!” “I’d also like some animals – a goat and a donkey are first on my list – so as I’m planning to create my own zoo some larger grounds might be in order. We’ll miss the place though, it’s been a great family home, and I’m certain the next owners will love it as much as we have!” n

MOIR WADE CABINET MAKERS
DELIGHTING in
DETAIL Words: Rob Davis.
R&S Pride JAN 222.qxp 24/11/2020 13:57 Page 103
When Kirsty Sydenham came to commission her new kitchen, she found herself considering details that she’d never even thought about... thanks to the meticulous, forensic and assiduous talents of Leicester-based cabinet makers Moir Wade... “They were forensic!” says Kirsty Sydenham with a smile. We’re discussing her recently completed brand new kitchen, a room that much thought has been invested in, to say the least. That’s because Kirsty chose Leicester’s Moir Wade when she decided to commission a new kitchen, and was thoroughly impressed by the firm’s attention to detail. “The house is only 20 years old, so its original kitchen was still in place,” says Kirsty. “And whilst the previous owners had ensured the rest of the house was in good order, the kitchen looked like it was going to be the last bit of an overall refurbishment.” “It’s probably wise. The kitchen is perhaps the most important element of your home, one that has to look right, but function well too, and it’s the most expensive room in your home to redesign.” “I’m quite glad I got the opportunity to start from fresh with the kitchen as it’s a really personal room. I’d seen Moir Wade’s work before and I liked the company’s style, so when I was building a new extension for the kitchen I enlisted their help and it turned out to be a really good decision.” Kirsty’s project involved installing a new kitchen, utility and shower room in her modern family home, a property she’d moved into from a larger, older country property. The goal was to achieve quality and create a solid, high contemporary inframe shaker kitchen in the style that would reflect the modernity of the property. >> Left: Kirsty Sydenham commissioned an in-frame shaker kitchen from Leicester-based Moir Wade for an extension in her modern property... the baby-pink Aga was the pièce de résistance of the project!

>> “Right from the start Moir Wade were absolutely brilliant to work with,” says Kirsty. “Jonathan joined the project when the extension was planned but still made some constructive suggestions as to how its design could be tweaked, changes which were well worth making and resulted in a better layout both for the kitchen and its utility room.” “I was really pleased with how invested in the project they were and how involved they were in getting the planning right. I really do belive that the extra expense of a bespoke kitchen, one designed as well as this one has been, is justified because I’ll be happier with it for years to come.”
measuring. I was really impressed with the speed and ease of the eventual installation, and no detail was overlooked.” “The cabinetry is solid oak painted in twotone Mole’s Breath and Ammonite shades. The surfaces are Kenilworth quartz and there are integrated Siemens appliances.” The company was founded in 2002 by brothers-in-law Jonathan Wade – who liaises with customers and designs spaces for clients – and Will Moir, who heads up a six-strong workshop team and oversees the meticulous standards of quality and craftsmanship.
“I wanted a room that had a sense of luxury, but one that was practical too. My children are 12 & 16, and we have dogs too, so the place had to stand up to the rigours of family life, and I really think it will.”
Working with budgets between £40,000 and £60,000, Moir Wade is one of the area’s most recommendable firms, creating everything from a classic in-frame shaker kitchen to dramatic contemporary kitchens more modern properties... with, Kirsty says, exceptional attention to detail.
“From the height of the shelves in the cupboards to the intricate joints of the cabinets, everything was meticulous. Jonathan must have visited ten or 15 times dropping off samples, checking on the project and
“We even ended up moving the lights because originally they wouldn’t have been evenly aligned over the island... consideration of details like that are the reason I’m so delighted with the result.” n

WEDDINGS
THE WEDDING THAT COVID COULDN’T SPOIL Love conquers all, as the saying goes. Even Covid... yes, sorry to mention that word... but happily Davina and Paul’s day proves that nothing can spoil your wedding day as long as you have one another and some family and friends to share the day with! Wedding Photographers: October James Photography, 07876 794743, www.octoberjames.com.
If anyone knows the perils of Covid, it’s Davina Ashton. As an A&E doctor, working in Peterborough, she’s one of the people on the frontline helping to keep patients and colleagues safe. How unfair, then, that her own wedding plans were met with disruption. But Davina and fiancé Paul were sanguine throughout their wedding planning and want to reassure other couples that you can enjoy the perfect wedding even amid the chaos of Covid.
WEDDING DETAILS DAVINA & PAUL ASHTON
“Paul eventually gave up trying to avail himself of the breathtaking scenery and instead asked me to marry him over supper overlooking the harbour on the last night of our holiday. It was perfect. And quiet!” “We’re not the sort of couple who like big parties so our preferred wedding would have been a bit more low key, but when families
“We planned to marry at Normanton Church as Rutland Water was the venue for one of our early dates and we saw a couple marrying there. One of us dared to remark, tonguein cheek ‘that might be us one day!’ which turned out to be more truth than jest!” “We booked the church and we also found Lyddington’s Old White Hart which we thought would make a lovely reception venue. Our day was booked for May 2020 but with news of lockdown, we had to postpone until October.”
“We met in June 2018,” says Davina. “I’m from Nottinghamshire and moved to Stamford to be closer to work. Paul works in IT and was based in Kettering. We started dating and visiting Stamford so we could spend weekends together Paul found himself falling in love with the place... and with me too, I’m happy to say!” “He proposed when we were on holiday in Croatia... eventually! His original plan to propose on a walk around Plitviče Lakes National Park was scuppered because of a booking mix-up and it being insanely busy with tourists, and again when we failed to find a quiet spot whilst sea kayaking. He quite impressively managed to keep the ring safe during an entire afternoon paddling out at sea!”
join in the wedding planning and everyone is happy for you both plans do tend to escalate, and eventually we had a guest list of around 80 people.”

“With news that only 30 guests would be permitted we also had to write to all of our guests and explain the need for a dramatically reduced guest list. Happily, all of our friends and family were understanding and they all gave us their blessing. But it was still the hardest decision to make, and when the number of people was again reduced, this time to just 15 people – to just four weeks before the day – we were again faced with some decisions which would have been really difficult were it not for the fact that everyone was so lovely and understanding... we wanted a quieter wedding but not like this!” “All of our suppliers were great; very understanding. There was only one restriction that would have bothered me. We were told my father couldn’t walk me down the aisle at one point, a condition which was revised, thankfully. But as with the rest of the day, we just had to embrace any restrictions or come to terms with them.” >> 109

>> “Nobody was more aware than me why keeping friends and family safe was so important. We sort of embraced it, giving little bottles of hand sanitiser as wedding favours, for example, which raised a smile... as did the wedding cake toppers with the bride and groom each wearing face masks! We also opted for clear masks which was a good thing, as they ensured we could still friends and family smiling!” “We did have a bit of a scary moment immediately before the wedding though, when Paul developed a cough. Perhaps as an anxious bride – as well as a diligent doctor – I was very sensitive to his coughing and we were both tested. Mine came back negative but Paul’s was positive, so we had to selfisolate in the two weeks prior to the day.” “Our isolation finished on Wednesday, and we were due to be married on the Saturday, so it was quite close. But by that time we were a bit beyond trying to change the situation and (almost) managed to find humour in it... we very nearly got to the wedding without any more disruption!” “Our suppliers were great, like October & James our photographers, who was so lovely and great to work with, and Holly at The Old White Hart.” “We’re both happy to say, though, that the day was perfect. Even with restrictions and worries leading up to it. The wedding itself was always a happy bonus, though, to the main fact that I was marrying my best friend, someone I love greatly.” “We’re both really grateful to our family and our friends and to the suppliers who helped us to prove that nothing has to spoil your day and that the most important thing is to be safe and to celebrate your love for each other.” n Wedding Photographers: October James Photography, 07876 794743, www.octoberjames.com.

ADVERTISING FEATURE NFU MUTUAL
Resolving to Achieve Peace of Mind Make a new year’s resolution you’ll be very happy to keep this month. Promise to ensure you achieve protection and security for the finances of your family or your business, with NFU Mutual’s range of services... THINGS ARE A LITTLE DIFFERENT in the Stamford and Rutland office of NFU Mutual this year. Ordinarily the team would be pulling a cracker and enjoying a sherry to toast the festive season. But for obvious reasons, instead of a Christmas bash, the team are making do with an elbow bump and going off to spend a well-earned Christmas and New Year break with their respective families. It’s been a busy year, but one that shows protection is more important than ever. And whilst NFU Mutual is known for its range of insurance products, it’s worth remembering, too, that the firm can also provide a range of financial services for both businesses and individuals including income protection. Like the rest of us, NFU Mutual’s Ashley Oxer, Miles Baker, and the rest of the team cherish time spent with their families and work hard to support them. But perhaps the best you can do for your family is not to ensure the turkey is adequately stuffed and the gifts under the tree have the biggest bows, but to ensure your loved ones are protected, come what may. “If 2020 has taught us anything,” says Miles, “It’s that having adequate insurance, protection and savings both in your personal life and when you’re in business is essential for when things don’t go as smoothly as you hope.” “NFU Mutual is a separate entity to the NFU and was established in 1910. We provide insurance and financial services not just to farmers or rural communities, but for everyone.” “We now have 300 local offices, looking after the needs of 900,000 people and underwriting £1.6bn worth of premiums.” “But whilst we’re known for our insurance products, with trusted and specialist cover for your home, business and car, we also provide a wealth of financial services too with the same philosophy of looking after our customers.”
“We usually offer a face-to-face consultation but where government restrictions are in place we can still discuss our clients’ needs over the telephone or video call. It’s our job to understand your circumstances and provide good advice on issues pertaining to life insurance and critical illness, as well as pensions and investment.” “Sadly there have been too many occasions when someone we’ve provided insurance products to has had to rely on that product. But the peace of mind they’ve had, their family or their home and possessions being protected is priceless.” “Our high net worth policies now recognise new pitfalls such as cyber crime, and we’ve a range of guidelines for our customers to ensure we can help prevent rather than just resolve online theft or fraud – up to date software and secure passwords, and tips for spotting a rogue email that could be engage in a ‘phishing’ scam for example.” “As well as spending time around family – which makes us all realise how important protection is – late December and January also represents the end of the tax year and a time when you can consider investing in the health of your business or in your financial future, so we’re usually busy.” “Resolving to protect yourself whilst you’re healthy, taking sensible steps to protect your income and looking after your future might not be the most glamorous of new year’s resolution, but for those whose lives take an unexpected turn, it’s usually you’re most glad to have made.” “In summer we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to support a couple of local charities during these difficult times. We made a donation of £3,000 split between our two chosen charities for 2020; Rutland Food Bank and Mindspace of Stamford.” “In a year that has seen a lot of uncertainty, it’s good to be able to give something back to the community and to be there for the area as a whole, as well as our customers.” n

MOTORS
OFF ROAD
LUXURY The newly facelifted Bentley Bentayga is better than ever, having matured into its position as a class-leading 4x4. It’s now more luxurious, capable and more recommendable than all of the German brands or the equivalent Range Rover... Words: Rob Davis.
UNDOUBTEDLY there are some things that the British do exceptionally well. Queuing, for example. Making small talk about the weather. We’re especially good at maintaining silent frustration at someone’s apparent lack of gratitude. At least, we are until the searing tension boils over and we’re forced to mutter a barely audible ‘you’re welcome(!),’ as though the phrase serves as some form of dark incantation. The British, though, have also perfected the art of understated taste and style. We do it brilliantly. Think Savile Row, rather than clothing emblazoned with a designer brand name. Think quiet country pubs, not London nightclubs. Think ‘Great British Bentley,’ rather than of the howling exhausts and black-alloy wheels of an SUV from AMG Mercedes or a gussied-up BMW.
Bentley doesn’t need to show off. Its cars are somehow understated despite their position in the market and their imperious price tag. The company has the skill of reflecting its values down to a fine art. When the Bentayga first appeared in showrooms some – me included – wondered if it would be a little brash; a clean-tyres school run SUV for well-heeled urban mums. In fact, the car has matured into its looks, especially with this new facelifted model, and wears its size and power tastefully. The car’s interior is beautiful, and for the first time I can honestly say I see where the extra investment goes, above what you’d pay for a Range Rover. The Bentayga is luxurious capable and eminently recommendable. >>
125
R&S Pride JAN 222.qxp 24/11/2020 13:58 Page 126
>> For now there are two Bentaya engines. Forget the 6.0W12 Speed model; it’s not what a Bentley should be about. Sitting below it is the wholly better 4.0V8 with twin-turbocharging and 550ps of power and 770nm of torque; an ideal engine for motorway cruising, the odd-off road or for towing. As standard the car has an eight speed automatic gearbox with permanent all-wheel drive and air suspension. Also standard are five seats, a hide interior, park assist, top view camera and walnut veneers. First Edition specification models adds two-tone leather, adaptive cruise control, and ventilated massaging seats. At least for now this is our pick of the range, and you can choose between a luxury four 126
“The Bentley online configurator is a great way to kill off a couple of hours between Christmas and New Year as you deliberate on and eventually design your perfect Bentayga...” seat configuration, the standard five seat configuration or for the first time a practical seven seat interior according to your needs. After that choice, you’re left playing around with the firm’s online configurator to choose from the myriad paint, two-tone hide and two-tone wood veneer options... the configurator is a great way to kill off a couple of hours between Christmas and New Year as you deliberate on – and eventually design – your perfect Bentayga.
What more do you need to know about the Bentayga? Well, refinement is peerless, even better than a Range Rover. It’s perhaps not as capable off-road, lacking low-range gears or diff locks, but if your SUV requirements are more road-going in nature, you’ll love it. The best expression of style is often the most understated, too. That’s why Bentayga works so well. Opt for a subtle colour, linen hide, walnut veneer and we reckon you’ll own one of the most beautiful cars on the road. n

Super SUVs: More four by four than before...
Aston Martin DBX, £158,000: Aston Martin has deviated from its usual GT models to create its own four door, four wheel drive vehicle, with a 4.0V8 twin turbo engine. 60mph is reached in 4.5 seconds, top speed is 181mph and it has 542bhp of power. Fuel economy is a weak point at just 19mpg, and despite its seemingly small dimension it’s wider and 20cm longer than a Range Rover Sport! Arguably it’s oriented to performance rather than luxury, but it’s certainly a compelling alternative to the Bentayga for well-heeled motorists. n
Rolls Royce Cullinan, £264,000: Rolls snootily rejects that its 4x4 car is an SUV, stating instead that it’s a ‘high-sided car from Rolls Royce.’ Enjoy a hand-built 6.75 litre V12, all wheel drive, all wheel steering and all wheel drive, but you’ll need a hand parking, considering the Cullinan is 30cm longer than a Range Rover and over 5cm wider. There’s something a bit naff about someone for whom a Range Rover or a Bentayga is ‘not good enough,’ and it’s difficult to see where the extra money goes, but if you insist, the Rolls will certainly be an imperious sight on the road thanks to its huge grille, vast dimensions and monster engine. n
BENTLEY BENTAYGA Price: £146,700. (On sale now). Drivetrain: 4.0V8 twin-turbo petrol, 550ps, 770Nm torque. Eight speed automatic gearbox, all wheel drive. Performance: 0-62 mph: 4.4 seconds. Top Speed: 180mph. Economy: 21.2mpg, 302g/km CO2. Equipment: Leather upholstery, electric heated seats, satellite navigation, climate, cruise. n
Range Rover Autobiography, £102,940: There are more expensive Range Rover models available, but the PHEV Autobiography here is the sweet spot of the range. Unless you’re set on having extra rear legroom we’d pass up the opportunity of the longer wheelbase model in favour of this standard version. Meanwhile, even wealthy drivers will appreciate the smoothness of the PHEV drivetrain, the fuel economy and CO2 advantage and the option to run the 2.0V4 assisted Range Rover as a company vehicle. n

E is for Electrified Jaguar’s baby 4x4, the E-Pace, has been facelifted, with fresh interior technology, and best of all a new plug-in hybrid version that could be just the great value and highly desirable small 4x4 you’ve been searching for... 4x4 vehicles are great in our part of the world. The extra ground clearance and additional ability to negotiate mucky verges whilst squeezing down narrow country lanes comes in handy. But if your driving also entails tiny car parking spaces in town centres and much of your driving is on A-Roads, most 4x4s end up being overkill. And so here’s the perfect compromise, Jaguar’s new E-Pace. It’s the company’s smallest 4x4 and it has just been facelifted with a fresh interior and new plug-in hybrid engine technology. With a 1.5 litre three-cylinder engine, the P300e badged plug-in version relies on an additional 80kW electric motor to help out. It’s good for 34 miles of range on electric only power, it’ll achieve 141mpg and emits just 44g/km of CO2 so it’ll cost pennies to run if you’re a company car driver.
Jaguar E-Pace P300e HSE Price: £50,860. Engine: 1.5, four cylinder plus 80kW electric. Performance: 0-60mph 6.1 secs, top speed 134mph. Interior: Leather, sat nav, heated seats, adaptive cruise, climate. n
What’s more, performance is brisk with 60mph reached in 6.1 seconds and 134mph top speed making it feel every bit as quick as its pure petrol powered siblings. Heated seats, navigation, front and rear parking sensors and a 3D surround camera are standard. S models gain a electric leather seats, SE versions gain a heated steering wheels and power tailgate whilst HSE models add adaptive cruise control. The E-Pace features the latest version of Jaguar’s Pivi Pro infotainment screen, whilst technologies new to the E-Pace include Jaguar Land Rover’s Clearsight ‘virtual’ rear view mirror and software updates over the air. All cars feature five seats, an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. With plenty of kit, low running costs and a sensible size, the E-Pace could be all the car you need in our part of the world, with none of the excess. n

ASTON MARTIN’S VANTAGE ROADSTER GAINS ROOFLESS ‘VOLANTE’ SIBLING
Silence is golden for Land Rover & Jaguar owners thanks to tech... JAGUAR LAND ROVER
ASTON MARTIN Oh heck yes! Aston Martin has lifted the lid on the new Volante soft top version of its entry level Vantage model, and the result is a spectacular piece of automotive design. Powered by Aston Martin’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS/685Nm V8 engine and mated to an 8-speed ZF the roadster accelerates from 0-60mph in just 3.7sec and is
capable of 190mph with the roof raised. Weight increases by just 60kg compared with the coupé thanks to a new, lighter Z-fold roof mechanism and optimised exterior and chassis revisions throughout. The Vantage range starts at £114,850, with the recommended retail price of the Vantage Roadster starting from £126,950 in the UK. n
New Bugatti Bolide on track LIGHTWEIGHT RACETRACK ONLY CAR CAN REACH 311MPH IN JUST 20 SECONDS AND HITS 60MPH IN 2.1 SECONDS...
Jaguar Land Rover has revealed new noise cancellation technology that removes unwanted road and tyre sounds from the cabin and provides a quieter and more refined experience for drivers and passengers. The technology, introduced on the new Jaguar F-Pace, new Jaguar XF and Range Rover Velar, is capable of lowering unwanted noise peaks by 10dB and overall noise levels by 3-4dB – the equivalent of turning down the in-car sound system by four ‘steps.’ n
BUGATTI Looking to dispatch your daily commute in a more brisk fashion? Bugatti’s Bolide could help. At just 1,240kg, but with an eight litre W16 engine and four turbochargers, it’s got some poke, to say the least. In fact, the car will reach 311mph flat out and reaches 60mph in just 2.1 seconds. The car is so fast that it actually changes shape at speed, and will sell for an eye-watering £15m. What’s worse is that it’s a track-only car, so even if you did have the grit and fearlessness to use the Bolide on your commute, it wouldn’t be legal... which in hindsight is probably for the best. n
