ridham’s is pleased to offer the important and extensive art collection of Joseph Liverant (1894-1981). This collection includes original works, lithographic posters and related material (books) by Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Most examples are signed and / or signed and dedicated to Mr. Liverant, Also included in this collection are original works by Pablo Picasso, James Ensor, Raymond Moretti and Raoul Dufy. Mr. Liverant, an Ex-Pat of Russian Jewish origin, fled Germany to take residence in Canada during the Second World War. Marc Chagall, an ex-Pat of Russian Jewish origin, was fleeing France and the Holocaust to take refuge in New York City during the war years. In the years following his return to France, Chagall took up residence at his famed home in St-Paul-de-Vence while Liverant purchased a residence in Beaulieu-surMer. Social circles, shared interests, a common Jewish background including speaking Yiddish along with a proximity in age, transpired into a long, congenial relationship. This warm relationship is evident in the numerous dedications made on the lithographs and books that are in this collection. After Liverant’s death, the collection was passed onto his wife Marguerite, and subsequently to his stepson, Mr. Félix Quinet. Mr. Quinet took great pride in his mother and stepfather’s collection, donating many pieces to the National Gallery of Canada. Upon Mr. Quinet’s recent passing, the family has decided to divest the collection through public auction.

To whom it may concern: a note from the Family. The Quinet Family is confident that the original signed artwork supplied to Pridham’s Auction House Inc., is authentic. Our grand-parents, Joseph and Marguerite Liverant, collected art for a considerable period of time. As residents of the South of France, these pieces were stored and displayed in their private residences. The collection of art was moved to Canada in the mid 1980’s, after their deaths. These pieces have remained in the sole possession of our family, for decades. Our father, Félix Quinet, had a decades-long relationship with the National Gallery of Canada. He donated hundreds of Chagall lithographs, beginning in 1986. Other inclusions: a selection of Persian rugs including one designed by Vasily Kandinsky, a few more Chagall posters, an impressive Venetian glass chandelier, a pair of Art Deco ceramic nautical figures by Edouard Cazaux (1889-1974, French), several pieces of fine Venetian glass and Austrian stemware (J&L Lobmeyr Hoffman, 1917) from the Liliane M. Stewart Foundation (Montreal), and several monumental commissioned pieces of fine art work by well known listed Canadian artists from the Canderel-Ottawa Collection.

He uses the same shade of bold blue in varying tones and hues to create the beautiful Parisian city scape which fades into the horizon – with the Eiffel Tower visible in the background. Showing a deep red, the sun acts as the heart of Paris, along with Chagall’s enchanting characters and people that make the city one of the most loved in the world. Covered in a light grey glaze, these sculptures represent exhibition quality by this important artist. Circa 1925. Height, 22.5”. Arthur Goldscheider founded 2 groups of progressive artists: La Stele for sculptors and L’Evolution for creators of Decorative works. 45 James ENSOR (1860-1949) Belgian James Ensor, coloured pencils on paper, “Napoléon”. Signed Ensor bottom right. Unframed. Dimensions, 8.75” x 5.25”. Provenance: The Joseph Liverant Estate, Ottawa, Canada. A major figure of the Belgian avant-garde in the late 19th century and a forerunner of 20th-century Expressionism, James Ensor produced paintings that explored religious subject matter, political satire, and carnivalesque imagery (his family owned an antiques and souvenir emporium that sold grotesque carnival masks). In his early years. Ensor was a founder and leader of Les Vingt (The Twenty), a group whose goal was to promote new artistic developments in Europe, though they later rejected his work as it became more radical and extreme in subject and method.
