Jack CHAMBERS (1931 - 1978) R.C.A.

A limited edition hard cover book, signed and numbered 226 out of 300 by the artist, published by Nancy Poole in 1978. Includes a separate coloured serigraph entitled “Daffodils”, signed, numbered 226/300, and dated 77, Unframed sheet, in a matching protective hardcover portfolio. The book and serigraph are enclosed in the original slipcase. All in excellent condition. Minor scratching to the slipcase. Jack Chambers was an artist and film maker born in London, Ontario. He called his own work “perceptual realism, a kind of surrealism based on his own dreams and memories and the existentialist philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (French phenomenological philosopher). Chambers’ art work is in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Museum London.

AUTOGRAPHED YOUSUF KARSH BOOK

An autographed hard cover book “Karsh Canadians”, University of Toronto Press, dated 1978. Very good condition, including dust cover. Yousuf Karsh (19082002) CC, RCA, FRPS, was born in Armenia and was a genocide survivor (under the Ottoman Empire, circa WWI) who immigrated to Canada. Karsh, who opened his studio in Ottawa in 1932, was (still is) world renown for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.

MODEL OF A QUÉBEC HOUSE

A model of an early Québec house with tin roof and curved eaves designed to shed snow and icicles away from the building. With removable roof and inner ceiling which allows for a view of each floor made from cigarette pugs. Mounted on a styrafoam base with added plaster substance to simulate snow on the ground. Circa 1960. Good overall condition. Portion of the barn wood moulding missing from two sides of the base. 8” W, 12” D, 9” H (house only).

QUÉBEC ROCKING CHAIR

An early Québec rocking chair with downward shaped arms and a splat back. Wooden plank seat, box stretcher and rear supports. Wooden pin construction with some rosehead nails. The overall red colour of the chair is likely not original but the overall effect is visually pleasing. Circa 1830. 34” H, 18” W, 29” D.

QUÉBEC BLANKET BOX

A pine blanket chest in original dark green paint. Corner post construction with butt iron hinges. Early, possibly original lock mechanism. Some damage and loss to the base moulding at the rear of the box. Nice clean interior. Overall, a good example of its type. Québec, circa 1840. 22” H, 43” W, 21” D.

BIRCH BARK BOX

A small oval birch bark container decorated on the lid with a beaver done in dyed porcupine quills. The border and the sides of the box also decorated with quills. The image of a beaver is a rare find on a quill container. Minor loss to a few quills on the side and some of the binding twine is missing. Circa 1930. 4” L, 3” W.

Robert Stewart HYNDMAN (1915 - 2009) Canadian

Untitled, a view of Gatineau with St. Francis de Sales Church (Ottawa), oil on masonite, signed lower right, 7 1/2” H, 9 1/2” W. Provenance: consigned by the artist’s family. Robert Hyndman was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He studied art at the Central School for Arts and Crafts (London, England). In 1939, he returned to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force - he flew Spitfires over the English Channel. In 2001, he received the Art & Heritage Award from the City of Ottawa, and in 2001, on the 100th Anniversary of the election of Canadian former Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, he presented his portrait of Prime Minister Laurier to then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. In 2003, he received the Victor Tolgesy Arts Award from the City of Ottawa.

A folk art creation of a chicken in a small painted wooden cage. The wooden chicken with a feathered tail is mounted on a spring inside the cage. The little structure is painted in yellow and red including a checkerboard roof. In overall good condition. A finial on the top front moulding is missing. Circa 1920. 6 1/2” H, 5” W, 5” D.

A carved and painted wooden folk art figure of policeman in his helmet and belted overcoat / uniform carrying his billy stick in his raised right arm. The figure mounted on a painted wooden base with the initials VR painted on the front panel. The figure’s coat is painted a dark green as is his hat and trousers. The initials PC (Police Constabulary) are painted on simulated brass buttons on the coat and on the helmet. Note repair to the right arm. Circa 1950. Some chips, paint loss. 50” H, 13” W, 3” D.

ANTIQUE ARCHITECTURAL GLAZED CUPBOARD

Circa 1820, originally from a private Canadiana collection in Kingston, Ontario. This fine one-piece cupboard has vertical pilasters on either side, surmounted by modest capitals and cornice. Original glazing in upper doors. Three deep dovetailed drawers at waist level. Two lower doors with bold raised fielded panels. This handsome architectural cupboard retains good two-tone paint throughout, dark blue green on case, complimented by light mid brown on the upper glazed doors, with appropriate wear. 85” H, 55” W, 19 3/4” D.

A magnificent, large folk art painted rooster by Wilfrid Richard (1894-1996), of Saint-Ubalde, Portneuf, Québec. Standing on a circular green painted round base. Nicely detailed carving of the feathers, wings, tail and feet. Wilfrid Richard is arguably one of the finest of all Canadian folk art carvers. Circa 1970. Note age crack in base. WALKING STICK

A folk art wooden walking stick with a dog’s head shaped handle carved by Wilfrid Richard (18941996) of Saint-Ubalde, Portneuf, Québec. The dog’s head and handle behind it are carved from a single piece of wood which was then affixed to stem of the cane. Carved eyes have painted black pupils, the ears, mouth and nose outlined in a red paint colour. Note loss to one ear. Circa 1970. Lenght, 35”.

A primitive pine washstand with shaped gallery around the top and a narrow shelf fronting the rear splash board. Square nailed construction. Chamfered corners on the four legs. A small drawer (round nailed construction) in the front apron is likely not original. The top in a painted red surface. The apron and four legs with blue paint over red. Lower shelf in early red paint. Circa 1820. 33” H, 23 1/4” W, 16 1/2” D.

ANTIQUE ARCHITECTURAL CUPBOARD

Circa 1840, the one-piece cupboard originating from the home of the Robertson family, south of Hamilton, Ontario. P. L. Robertson was the inventor of the famous Canadian Robertson square head slot Screw and Screwdriver, and became the pioneer founder of the Robertson Hardware Company. Showing rare historical architectural design features of the famous Italian architect, Andrea Palladio. These include, in particular, the arched Palladian doors on the top half of the cupboard, and the distinctive reeded vertical pilasters on both upper and lower sections of the cupboard. These distinctive architectural components frame the whole cupboard as the architect Andrea Palladio would frame an edifice in Italy, as mentioned in Philip Shackleton’s book, The Furniture of Early Ontario. There are two large dovetailed drawers at waist level. Originally painted blue green, later over painted in white paint. The secondary coat of white paint has been scraped off, to reveal the undercoat of blue green paint. In the process, some of the original blue green paint was scraped off, and some minor professional restoration was required. A rare and interesting cupboard. 80” H, 56 1/4” W, 19 1/2” D.

WRITING ARMCHAIR

A ladder back, writing hardwood and pine armchair in original black surface. Robustly turned uprights front and back. Early cane seat. Note missing portion on one slat and a crack across another. In 2001, he received the Art & Heritage Award from the City of Ottawa, and in 2001, on the 100th Anniversary of the election of Canadian former Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, he presented his portrait of Prime Minister Laurier to then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. In 2003, he received the Victor Tolgesy Arts Award from the City of Ottawa.

Untitled, three native men resting after a deer hunt, oil on canvas, signed “C. Krieghoff.” lower left. 18” H, 25” W. Cornelius David Krieghoff was a Dutch born, Canadian- American (died in Chicago). Around 1846, with his wife, Émilie Gauthier, he moved to Montreal and participated in the founding of the Montreal Society of Artists in 1847. While in Montreal, he befriended the Mohawks living on the Kahnawake Indian Reservation and made many sketches of them from which he later produced oil paintings. He took numerous trips around Quebec, to see people and landscapes and to familiarize himself with ways of living. According to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, two schools asked Krieghoff to give a few hours’ teaching: the Quebec School for Young Ladies and Miss Plimsoll’s establishment. His teaching seems to have been confined to having his pupils copy his own paintings.

CAMPAIGN TRUNK

A small wooden campaign trunk with original leather surface, metal trim and extensive decorative metal tack designs on the lid and front. According to interior label, made by S&H Imperial Carriage Trunk & Plate Case Maker of England. Rectangular brass label on top indicates owner was Sir John Macra KCH. Trunk is in as found condition with several portions of the leather missing on the top and sides. Original hand-forged iron handles. Circa 1830. 24” W, 14” D, 10.5” H. Colonel Sir John Macra, K.C.H. was born on the 14th February, 1786. He obtained an Ensign’s commission in the 79th Highlanders in 1805, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the same year. His subsequent promotions were as follows: Captain, 1812; Major, 1818; Lieutenant-Colonel, 1821; Colonel, 1837. He was created a Knight of the Order of Hanover (K.C.H.) in 1827. His military career was both distinguished and eventful. He was present at the siege and surrender of Copenhagen in 1807, and went to Sweden with the army under Sir John Moore in 1808. Later on in the same year, he accompanied the British Force which was sent to Portugal, and was present in all the operations of that campaign, including the retreat of Sir John Moore and the battle of Corunna, on the 16th January, 1809. From Spain, he accompanied his regiment in the Walcheren expedition, and was present at the siege and capture of Flushing in August the same year. At Walcheren, he suffered from the fever which caused so much havoc among the British troops, and from the effects of which he never completely recovered. Provenance: Sir John Macra’s descendants, Montreal Family.

Robert Hyndman was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He studied art at the Central School for Arts and Crafts (London, England). In 1939, he returned to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force - he flew Spitfires over the English Channel. In 2001, he received the Art & Heritage Award from the City of Ottawa, and in 2001, on the 100th Anniversary of the election of Canadian former Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, he presented his portrait of Prime Minister Laurier to then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. In 2003, he received the Victor Tolgesy Arts Award from the City of Ottawa.

Mary Porter ZWICKER (1904 - 1993)

Untitled, moored boats, watercolour on paper, signed lower left, 12 1/2” H, 16 1/2” W. Mary Marguerite Porter Zwicker was born in Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She traveled to the US to study privately with Hans Hofmann. In 1937, she married a fellow art student, Leroy Zwicker. Zwicker taught painting at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and eventually led art and social tours in Spain, Italy and Portugal. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists. The Zwickers offered a private donation of $4 million in support of the conservation and exhibit of the home of folk art artist Maud Lewis.

For items shipped out of the province, the buyer is required to PAY TAXES as per their provincial tax status, whether it is HST, GST and PST. Includes Quebec buyers, there is GST AND QST. 10. The Auctioneer has the right to withdraw or add to the items as listed in any printed catalogue or listing or promoted on the internet. | Pridham’s a le droit de retirer ou d’ajouter des items sur une liste ou dans un catalogue imprimé, ou annoncé sur l’internet.

11. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from the sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. | L’Encanteur se réserve le droit de retirer tout lot de la vente, à n’importe quel moment, de diviser un ou plusieurs lots, et ce sans avis.

12. The Auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. | Pridham’s a le droit de refuser toute offre et d’avancer l’appel d’offres à son entière discrétion. Il se réserve le droit de ne pas accepter et de refuser toute offre. 13. When the Auctioneer says “sold” it is a contractual agreement between the Auctioneer and the buyer. All auctions are also audiorecorded. | Lorsque l’Encanteur dit “vendu” cela est tout comme un contrat entre l’acheteur et l’Encanteur. Les encans sont aussi enregistrés par audio.

14. The highest bidder accepted by the Auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. 15. The buyer shall pay an item in full and to the satisfaction of the Auctioneer; failing to do so may result in the cancellation of the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. | L’acheteur doit payer un item au complet et à la satisfaction de Pridham’s, à défaut de quoi, Pridham’s peut annuler la vente, avec ou sans offrir de nouveau l’article à vendre.

16. Payments have to be made in full by Visa, MasterCard (over the telephone, or online with our MONERIS PAGE), or e-transfer within 5 days after receiving their final invoice from Pridham’s (or Live Auctioneers). 18. If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, and art, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS #112 (St Laurent Blvd, Ottawa, store112@theupsstore.ca). Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping QUOTE before the auction (until FRIDAY NOON BEFORE THE SALE), if you are concerned. Sales will not be cancelled due to shipping costs.

If you prefer to use another carrier (not UPS), please take note that Pridham’s does not pack and insure - but we would be pleased to liaise with the shipper of your choice.

For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. We can not store furniture for weeks, please have a plan of action before buying large pieces, or a storage fee may apply.

Si vous n’êtes pas en mesure de ramasser vos achats, Pridham’s peut les livrer les petits objets (seulement, gratuitement) non-emballés au risque de l’acheteur chez UPS #112, lorsque convenable pour Pridham’s. 19. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items, including Rosewood, are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application service. The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of all wildlife. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale (et même le Bois de rose) ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la CITES (Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction).
