JOHANNA ELEONORE ‘HANNI” ROTHSCHILD (1921-2020)
Canadian, was a member of the Sculptors Society of Canada (SSC), “Vive le Roi!” (Hail to the King!), a comedic figural ceramic group fronted by a figure on horseback, in back is a group of helmeted knights brandishing swords and shields, all decorated with a matte glaze, minor losses. Measuring approximately 14” high x 15” wide x 22” deep. Together with an illustrated catalogue and artist bio from Laing Galleries, Toronto. This same ceramic group is Illustrated and described (titled) in a review from Ontario Homes & Living, dated May 1965. The artist’s work has been exhibited at the Stratford Festival, The Royal Ontario Museum, The Montreal Museum of fine Art, and the Toronto Art Gallery.

Two pieces of Flygsfors art glass designed by Paul Kedelv (1917-1990) from “Coquille” Series, the Coquille vase measuring 6 1/2” high, with remnant of the paper label, along with the Coquille bowl in black measuring 5 3/4” x 7 1/2” x 5 1/2”, both signed and dated underside. Note: Paul Kedelv was one of Sweden’s leading glass artists of the 20th century. He is most known for his design for the Flygsfors and Reijmyre glassworks in the 1950s–1970s. Paul’s artistry is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.

Likely produced for the World’s Fair in Paris (1889), in the manner of Franz Hofstotter (1871-1958), etched on the ground pontil, ‘Loetz Austria’, measuring 9 1/2” high.

A very good 14kt (stamped) yellow gold Maderia citrine ring, set with one oval cut citrine measuring approximately 22.02 x 16.70 x 10.21mm with an approximate total weight of 20.36ct. The clarity is graded excellent and the colour is a fine brownish reddish orange with very good intensity. The total weight of the ring is 23.14 grams, size 10.

Circa 1930, made by master silversmith William Maurice Carmichael (1892-1954, BC, Canada), the native (Haida) inspired ceremonial feast spoon featuring a handle with a totemic figure suspended upside down, repair to back of handle noted. Bearing marks for Sterling and maker’s marks , measuring 9” long, weighing 186 grams. Note: Although having studied briefly at the Slade School of Fine Art, Carmichael was chiefly self taught and was greatly influenced by the works of the London UK based Century Guild. An extraordinary French Louis Charles Pillivuyt Paris porcelain service consisting of (188 pieces), six graduated serving platters (the largest, 2 1/4” x 19 x 13 1/5”), five round serving platters (the largest, 15 1/4” dia.), three graduated fish platters (the largest, 27” x 9 1/4”), two lidded tureens (13” x 9”), two large serving bowls (11” x 5”, condition to both, hairlines), eight comports (6.75” x 9.5”), two lidded sauce tureens with underplates, (6.25” x 10”), two gravy boats with underplates, four condiment bowls (2.5” x 9.75”), two small handled sandwich trays (10.5” dia.), five soup plates (9.25” dia.), seventeen luncheon plates (8.875” dia.), thirty-five dinner plates (9.25” dia.), nice egg cups, one coffee pot, one teapot, one cream, one milk, one covered sugar, nineteen tea cups, twenty-four saucers, sixteen coffee cups, and twenty-two saucers. The plates and serving dishes showing scalloped rims with fine gilt decoration. All monogrammed. Pillivuyt is one of the oldest and prestigious French porcelain brand. Japanese, Meiji Period (1868-1912), the exceptionally large blue and white porcelain body profusely decorated with panels depicting tigers devouring dragons, songbirds and flora, rising to a waisted neck banded with stylized flowerhead designs, surmounted by a similarly decorated flange-shaped rim. Hairline to base. Measuring 18” high x 22 1/2” diameter, weight is in excess of 50 lbs. Provenance: 12th Province of Quebec Premier, M. Simon-Napoléon Parent, KC (King’s Counsel) to his descendants. Note: SimonNapoléon Parent often attended auctions with Sir Wilfrid Laurier; it is said that they purchased a similar vase (LOT#) at the same auction, one is on display at the Wilfrid Laurier House, Ottawa. We can find a proof of their friendship in this quote taken from Laurier’s biography (intervention in provincial affairs): “Marchand’s death on 25 Sept. 1900 created a difficult problem of succession (in Quebec). There were many aspirants to the premiership. Called on to decide, Laurier … chose Parent, who had given him his undying loyalty and admiration.”

Signed verso A. Léonard Sclp., for highly regarded French sculptor Agathon Léonard (1841-1923), also stamped with impressed Paris foundry mark for Susse Frères, together with the letter M for chaser Magenot, measuring 21” high, weight 23.6 lbs. Note: Léonard moved to Paris when he was quite young, and studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1887, and a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897.
