The Estate of H. Basil Robinson - Order of Canada This retired public servant and diplomat has served his country with great distinction, particularly as Deputy Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs. In addition, he has made a noteworthy contribution to Canadian foreign policy, public affairs and political history by virtue of his scholarly work, Diefenbaker’s World: A Populist in Foreign Affairs. John Watkins was a Canadian scholar and diplomat who served for several years in Moscow, first as ‘Chargé d’Affaires ad interim’ (1948-51) and later as Ambassador (1954-56). At various times in the 1950s, he also served as Canadian Ambassador to Norway, Iceland, and Denmark, and as Assistant Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs in Ottawa. An art connoisseur fluent in Russian, Danish and French, Watkins took a keen interest in Russian and other European art and was an avid collector of both historical pieces and the works of avant-garde and contemporary Soviet artists, including Larionov, Vasilkovsky, Fonvisin, and Zveryev. After retiring to Paris in 1963, he continued to collect, adding to his collection works by Picasso and Chagal, as well as less well-known artists like the IrishHungarian artist Basil Rakoczi. Watkins was a close friend and colleague of H. Basil Robinson and his wife Elizabeth Robinson and was a frequent visitor to their home in Ottawa. Upon his untimely death in 1964, he bequeathed a substantial part of his collection - including paintings, sculpture, porcelain, silver, glass, and rugs - to the Robinsons. Those works filled their home at 17 Mariposa for some 60 years. After that time, we can not guarantee phone calls & emails will be answered due to the live webcast demands. Les descriptions sont inclues pour faciliter le processus le jour de la vente. En particulier, des pièces peuvent avoir été remplacées ou restaurées, et les lots peuvent ne pas être authentiques ou de qualité satisfaisante.
