The Allio Canadiana & Folk Art Sale I

t is with great pleasure that Pridham’s Auctions & Appraisals has been asked to sell the lifetime collection of Mario and Nicole Allio. This outstanding Collection demonstrates the passion that Nicole and her late husband Mario shared for over 45 years. Although the collection is diverse, crossing numerous collecting areas, the Allios’ keen eye for folk art, trade signs and birds in numerous iterations is prominent throughout.

As passionate collectors, the Allios put on many miles traveling through Nova Scotia, Ontario, Québec, and the northeastern United States being drawn in by form and colour, ultimately feeding their insatiable appetite for the material culture that we find in this Collection. In 1995, Mario and Nicole were featured in the New York Times in an article entitled “Furniture defying time” as it relates to Canadian antiques. This tribute is evident within this catalogue as we find numerous pieces of outstanding Canadian and American furniture along a fantastic selection of smaller items. We are also very pleased to offer select inclusions from a limited number of other collections. We look forward to sharing this auction experience with you and the excitement a Collection of this caliber brings.

9 Seton Tompkins (1899-1986) Cigar Store Figure A sculpture by Seton Tompkins (1899-1986) inspired by tobacco shop figural trade signs of the 19th century. This sculpture depicts a man wearing a black suit, white shirt and a feathered headdress while holding a rifle in one hand and a bunch of cigars in the other. Tompkins work is found in numerous public and private collections including the Canadian Museum of History. Bought directly from the artist. Circa 1980. Singhampton, Ontario.

25 Early Blue Bench A painted bench (powdery blue-green over original red) with a deep top and having half moon cut-outs on the legs. The top has an unusual raised moulding along the back edge and the legs are mortised through the top. 19th century.

26 Decorated Traveller’s Trunk An early, cylindrical traveller’s trunk with brass studded design, leather trim and iron bail handles.

The initials EW appear on the top within a doublerimmed oval of brass tacks. The inside of the lid has a paper label marked “Montreal”. Good condition with some minor imperfections and some missing tacks. Some missing tacks, hinges broken and leather replacements. Quebec, late 18th Century. Subject to CITES restrictions.

In original vibrant black and red grained decoration, the case has four drawers consisting of an overhanging top drawer and three drawers below flanked by turned columns terminating in turned feet. On top are two smaller drawers and a distinctive shaped backboard.

Initialed AT. Trudeau, of the Odawa First Nation, worked on the Great Lakes and eventually retired to Manitoulin Island where he began painting familiar ships and local scenes, often with titles at the top cut from newspapers or painted with the aid of a stencil. Works by Angus Trudeau can be found in major public and private collections including the Canadian Museum of History, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

214 American Still Banks A cast iron « Halls Excelsior Bank » by J&E Stevens Company with a pull near the door that opens the cupola to reveal a carved red and brown cashier who takes the coin and disappears back into the bank. These banks were produced for many years and produced in different colours - this example being in original yellow paint. Generally regarded as the first patented mechanical bank with a patent date of DEC 21, 1869. American. Along with a cast iron still bank of a bank building with original red and black paint and a green cupola.

258 Quebec Armoire with Rat Tail Hinges A Quebec armoire in as-found condition with two raised panelled doors affixed by rat tail hinges over a single overlapping drawer. In crackled apple-green paint over the original red and constructed with rosehead nails. An interesting addition is the towel bar on the right side that was likely added shortly after the armoire was built. Original cornice, painted interior, some minor losses to the bracket base. 1830-40. 81.5” x 59” x 18”.

Several plaques from the same group are known, all with evidence of fire damage and having varying degrees of scorched and bubbled paint. Each is originally inscribed on the back in Roman numerals with its number in the series — this one is #VII, depicting the second fall on Christ’s march with the cross.

As-found condition with strong remnants of the original paint; one hand is missing on the figure at the left and minor loss to child behind. Quebec, late 19th century. 13.5” x 12”.

Several plaques from the same group are known, all with evidence of fire damage and having varying degrees of scorched and bubbled paint. Each is originally inscribed on the back in Roman numerals with its number in the series — this one is #X, depicting the removal of Christ’s garments. 18. If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road, Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS. Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are commensurate with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping quote before the auction, if you are concerned, not after you buy an item. Sales will not be cancelled if shipping is too expensive. For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. 19. For buyers who abandon their prepared and packed purchase at UPS for whatever reason, a charge of CAN $45 will be applied to their credit card by Pridham’s. 20. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. 21. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application services.

The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of our fauna and flora. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction (CITES).
