Winter enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, but in 1955 left that career to become an independent artist, depositing his R.C.A. diploma painting with the National Gallery entitled “Street Scene”. 85 Hermenegildo BUSTOS (1832-1907) Mexican Hermenegildo Bustos, oil on canvas, native portrait, signed “Hermenegildo Bustos” verso. Provenance: Montreal Estate. José Hermenegildo de la Luz Bustos Hernández was a Mexican painter primarily known for his portraits. Born into a Catholic family who had descended from Indians attached to the Mission he grew up in a small town with varied interests. Following the Mexican Revolution, the nation’s cultural heritage was reassessed, and Bustos’ work gained more notice, eventually receiving significant attention in the book ‘Pintura Mexicana’ by Robert Montenegro. In 1940, he was profiled in the catalog for the exhibition “Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art” at the museum of Modern Art. His work has also appeared at exhibitions in Paris (1952), London (1953) and Tokyo (1955). In 1956, a portion of the municipality was renamed “Purisima de Bustos”, in his honour. Provenance: Ex. Collection of Philip Shackleton’s sister, in the Shackleton family for over 60 years, Kingston, Ontario. Philip Shackleton wrote the definitive book, “The Furniture of Old Ontario.” Sub Sub-sequentially sold at auction, December 4, 2004 to present owner. According to David A. de Witt, former Bader Gallery Curator of European Art at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre Kingston, Ontario), the theme of this picture until this exhibition resisted deciphering. In the note to the catalogue, de Witt states, “[...] Its martial character and oriental setting evoke Torquato,Tasso’s famous epic poem, Jerusalem Liberate (1581). He continues, “Maclise was the foremost subject painter in England during the first half of the 19th century, and boasted wide reading, drawing from sources such as English and Continental European history, Shakespeare, legend and literature.” Although the title in the exhibition was Young Lovers Held Captive (unknown historical scene), the painting appears to depict a tranquil conversation between a stately couple, possibly even Charlemagne with one of his wives relating a story to his soldiers”. Gambagi Firenze, for Giuseppe Gambogi (1862-1928), masterfully executed with exacting proportions and exuding a highly expressive, ethereal sense of movement. In mythology, Undines were female water spirits inhabiting the waters of the Mediterranean who could on ocassion take the form of mortals. This exceptional work was likely inspired by the 19th century romantic novel by Baron Heinrich Karl de la Motte titled ‘Undine’, in which a beautiful Undine assumes human form in order to marry a mortal, but when she discovers her lover to be found unfaithful she then rises from the depths to take away his life & soul.
