ridham’s Auctions and Appraisals is pleased to offer the George and Joanne MacDonald Collection. Dr. George F. MacDonald, C.M., Ph.D., LL.D., F.R.S.C. (1938-2020) was a Canadian anthropologist and museum director who pioneered archaeological and ethnohistorical research on the Tsimshian and Gitxsan, and was recognized as an expert on Northwest Coast art. MacDonald was born in Cambridge, Ontario, and had degrees from the University of Toronto (1961: B.A. (Honours) in Anthropology), and Yale University (Ph.D. in Anthropology). In 1960, MacDonald joined what was then called the Canadian Museum of Man as Atlantic Provinces Archaeologist. He held the positions as Chief of the Archaeology Division of the Museum of Man; Founding Director, President, CEO, and Executive Director of the Canadian Museum of Civilization; CEO of the five museums of the state of Victoria, Australia; Director of the Melbourne Museum; and Director of the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. He was also the author of several scholarly publications and held various academic positions at universities and museums around the world. Mrs. Joanne MacDonald, M.A., worked as curator for the National Museum of Man, the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution, and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. She was appointed Research Associate at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Melbourne Museum, and the Royal Ontario Museum. She was a researcher and policy analyst for the Glenbow Museum, the National Museum of Man, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

101 Arthur Price, RCA, SSC, OSA (1918-2008) Canadian Arthur (Art) Price, S.S.C., R.C.A., O.S.A. , ‘Rain Wall’. Constructed in 1999 / 2000 of 16 red cedar planks (which incidentally are no longer commercially available in these widths), sympathetically rendered by hand with carved & painted totemic motifs that front a chip carved background, the central figure being the Spirit of the Afterlife. Dimensions, 10’4” high x 20’ wide. Original custom made crates for transportation remain intact. Price accurately designed, carved & decorated this ‘Rainwall’ which was inspired by a near identical example first observed in the late 1880’s by G.E. Emmons of the American Museum of Natural History, which is attributed to either the Tsimshian or Tlingit people. Arthur Donald Price, was a member of the Sculptors Society of Canada, The Royal Canadian Academy, and the Montreal Arts Club. He studied at the Ontario College of Art under Franklin H. Carmichael, George Pepper, Frederick Haines as well as others. While working at the National Film Board he met the noted ethnologist Dr. Marius Barbeau who helped coordinate many of Prices’ representation of works based on First Nations & Inuit Peoples. Price soon became enamoured with both the art of the North West Coast as well as its people, and was instrumental in the procurement of various indigenous elements which formed an integral part of the collection at the Indian village on the grounds of the University of British Columbia. Price became a highly skilled carver and eventually opened his own studio where he sculpted & cast in various metals including iron, bronze and silver. He then soon developed a prominent & lengthy list of government, corporate & private installation commissions, including the Labyrinth Building at Expo 67, National Research Council in Ottawa, Bell Canada, Ottawa City Hall, National Arts Centre in Ottawa, The Prudential Assurance Company of England, Head Office Montreal, etc., including a monumental installation project situated on the grounds of the Administration Building of the National Research Council in Ottawa, of an enormous stainless steel sphere, titled ‘The Universe is You’. 293A Ritual Vessel, West Africa Ritual Vessel, Aduno Koro (Ark of the World). West Africa, Dogon People, late 19th / early 20th century, these carved trough-like wooden vessels are found in the house of the family elder (ginna) and is used to hold the raw & cooked meat of sheep and/or goats that are sacrificed at a family altar at the annual ritual known as goru, celebrated during the winter solstice. Typically carved with a horse head and tail, these containers are said to represent a mythic ark sent by the creator Amma and guided by the primordial being Nommo. The animal form is explained by the fact that Nommo, upon his arrival on Earth, first transformed into a horse and pulled the ark along behind him. The eight figures carved in relief along the sides of the ark represent the eight original ancestors of humankind that were carried in the ark along with the essentials needed for life on Earth. Similar ritual vessels can take a more representational horse-like form, with four legs and are sometimes fitted with a lid. The body of the ark is naturalistic yet still stylized with the realistic treatment of the tail. Dimensions, 7” h x 47.5” w x 13” d. Provenance: Private Collection Ottawa. Photos to follow.
