The Fall Interiors Sale

Pridham’s Interiors Auction will feature a very fine selection of 15th & 16th century period furniture (many pieces were appraised by Sotheby’s in the 1970s, all acquired by a one Quebec Collector) to include, oak joint stools, a very rare strong box, several chests, chairs, a table-bench, other tables including a magnificent refectory table & tavern drop-leaf table, a Renaissance Revival oak desk, cupboards, an Arts & Crafts bookcase & bookstand, numerous 16th-19th century edged weapons & suits of armour including a 16th century helmet that once belonged to the Master of the Horse to King Henry VIII, a very rare 17th century crossbow, large bronzes, paintings by listed artists, of note, a large painting of Princess Anne of Denmark (later to become Anne, Queen of Great Britain), several objets de vertu and gold jewellery, rugs and fine porcelains such as Meissen, Royal Crown Derby & Worcester. A pair of antique blue sapphire and diamond ogee oval drop style cluster earrings set in 18kt yellow gold and silver, with black enamel on articulated diamond set fan shaped studs for pierced ears. The enamel is framed with twenty small round brilliant cut diamonds bead set in oxidized silver. The three ray fan shaped stud of each earring is bead set with seven small round brilliant cut diamonds.

Henri-Edmond Cross, humeur pensive, watercolour, signed with atelier stamp in red ink lower left. Measuring, 16” x 10.25”. Note: Henri-Edmond Cross was a French painter and printmaker. He is most acclaimed as a master of Neo-Impressionism, and he played an important role in shaping the second phase of that movement. He was a significant influence on Henri Matisse, and many other artists. His work was instrumental in the development of Fauvism.

GEORGE III MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK

A George III mahogany bracket clock, the double fusée eight-day movement striking on the full & half hour, the back plate signed in script Robert Wood - London, the white painted dial with Roman numerals and signed Rob. Wood, London. Set within a figured mahogany & satinwood strung case with an arched pediment, flanked by reeded columns with brass capitals and sided by later brass carrying handles, and ‘fish scale’ pierced brass frets fronting distressed red silk baffles, the back fitted with single door having an old mirrored plate, door frame stamped W. W. twice. Raised overall upon a molded plinth base atop brass pad feet, missing carrying handle on top, repair to top and minor distress to front, minor conservation to interior of case. Key intact together with old bill of sale, in working condition at time of cataloguing. English, circa 1800. Measuring 17.25” high x 13.5” wide x 7.5”. Note: Robert Wood is recorded as a clockmaker of good repute, working in London from 1789-1811.

A Salvi harp, the burl wood frame with 15” red spruce soundboard, 40 strings with a range of 1st octave E to 6th octave A. Purchased from Lyon & Healy, Chicago Illinois, complete with dust cover & tuning key. Italy, circa 1990. Dimensions 64.5” high x 34.5” wide, weight: 59 pounds. The Daphne 40 is 3/4 the size of the Concert Grand, featuring the same stainless steel action and fluid pedal mechanism as those found in their full size models.

WILLIAM ALEXANDER ENGRAVINGS

After William Alexander (1767-1816) English, a bound portfolio of thirty-nine engravings, published by G. Nicol, April 12, 1796, depicting Chinese technology, landscapes, cityscapes, temples, fortresses, engineering technology, canals, wildlife, culture, architectural drawings, instruments of war, along with eight maps during the first British Envoy to China. Page size, 16.5” x 22”. Note: William Alexander was a proficient English painter, illustrator, and engraver. He was also one of the two official artists who accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792-94, which was Great Britain’s first envoy to China. Alexander was best known for his drawings of this Macartney mission. Some of his drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, and were displayed at the Brighton Pavilion for George IV.

Manuel Antonio Caro, Chilean gentleman, oil on canvas (relined), signed top left. Measuring, 31” x 27”. Note: Caro is considered among Chile’s best-loved artists. He was the first Chilean student to attend the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Caro’s body of work included portraits and scenes of everyday life, and earned him high honors, and international recognition.

A historically important close helmet, the one piece skull showing a low comb with roped detail, upper visor with eyeslot, plain lower visor and chin guard with roped detail, restoration to lower visor & comb. English, circa 1550. Mea suring, 11” high. Provenance: Sotheby’s Catalogue dated April 6th 1976, London, referencing this helmet as belong ing to Sir William Goring, Knight of Burton Sussex, Master of the Horse to King Henry VIII, and Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Edward VI, thence to the Family of Goring of Highden, Sussex and by family descent to the present owner. Note: There is definite evidence that he was killed in the helmet as it underwent hasty repairs so that it could be affixed to a wall behind his tomb. A sword cut does not line up with any corresponding cut in the crudely made bevor so the latter was fashioned after his death. The helmet has remained in the Goring family until it was decided to place it in the hands of Sotheby’s auction firm who sold it in 1976 to the present owner.

A very good quality figured mahogany eightday hour strike longcase clock by Wm. Young of Dundee. The iron face is beautifully painted to represent England, Scotland and Ireland under the King and Queen of England. Housing a brass eight-day time and strike weight driven movement, retaining the original weights and painted iron pendulum. The case shows beautiful quarter columns along with recessed panels on the door and base. Young was active 1805-1843, a prolific maker of longcase clocks, the cabinet work used was always of the highest quality. This very impor tant cell was used in the filming of Disney’s first feature film “SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS”, and is signed in graphite on the matt, lower right, by Walt Disney, with Doc, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey written in graphite lower left. You have to examine each piece carefully; sales will not be set aside on grounds of condition, or of real or imagined misdescription. 6. Registration: all bidders are required to submit full name, address and a telephone number. 8. Unless exempted by law, the buyer must pay applicable taxes on the total purchase price. The buyer’s premium is added before the applicable taxes. Pridham’s does not divide a buyer’s invoice between two or more people on auction day. | À moins d’être exemptés, les acheteurs doivent payer les taxes appropriées sur le montant total. 9. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay HST on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of Canada. For items shipped out of the province, the buyer is required to PAY TAXES as per their provincial tax status, whether it is HST, GST and PST. Includes Quebec buyers, there is GST AND QST. À moins d’être exempté par la loi, l’acheteur est tenu de payer la TVH sur le prix d’achat total, y compris la prime de l’acheteur. 10. The Auctioneer has the right to withdraw or add to the items as listed in any printed catalogue or listing or promoted on the internet. | Pridham’s a le droit de retirer ou d’ajouter des items sur une liste ou dans un catalogue imprimé, ou annoncé sur l’internet.

11. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from the sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. | L’Encanteur se réserve le droit de retirer tout lot de la vente, à n’importe quel moment, de diviser un ou plusieurs lots, et ce sans avis.

12. The Auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. | Pridham’s a le droit de refuser toute offre et d’avancer l’appel d’offres à son entière discrétion. 13. When the Auctioneer says “sold” it is a contractual agreement between the Auctioneer and the buyer. All auctions are also audiorecorded. | Lorsque l’Encanteur dit “vendu” cela est tout comme un contrat entre l’acheteur et l’Encanteur. Les encans sont aussi enregistrés par audio.

14. The highest bidder accepted by the Auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. 15. The buyer shall pay an item in full and to the satisfaction of the Auctioneer; failing to do so may result in the cancellation of the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. | L’acheteur doit payer un item au complet et à la satisfaction de Pridham’s, à défaut de quoi, Pridham’s peut annuler la vente, avec ou sans offrir de nouveau l’article à vendre.

16. Payments have to be made in full by Visa, MasterCard (over the telephone, or online with our MONERIS PAGE), or e-transfer within 5 days after receiving their final invoice from Pridham’s (or Live Auctioneers). If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, and art, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS #112 (St Laurent Blvd, Ottawa, store112@theupsstore.ca). Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping QUOTE before the auction (until FRIDAY NOON BEFORE THE SALE), if you are concerned. Sales will not be cancelled due to shipping costs.

If you prefer to use another carrier (not UPS), please take note that Pridham’s does not pack and insure - but we would be pleased to liaise with the shipper of your choice.

For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. We can not store furniture for weeks, please have a plan of action before buying large pieces, or a storage fee may apply.

***UPS shipping must be paid by you no more than 5 business days after receiving the UPS SHIPPING AUTHORIZATION. UPS can not store your purchase, fees may apply. Thank you very much. We appreciate your cooperation.

19. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act. | L’Encanteur est un agent seulement pour le client et ne fait aucunes représentations en ce qui concerne l’attribution, le titre ou restriction affectant les articles dans une vente. 20. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items, including Rosewood, are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application service. The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of all wildlife. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale (et même le Bois de rose) ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la CITES (Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction).
