The Collection of David and the late Mary Jo Field

It is with great pleasure that Pridham’s Auctions & Appraisals presents the lifelong collection of David and the late Mary Jo Field. Avid collectors of Canadiana antiques and folk art for fifty years; they filled their authentically restored 1850’s home - Croydon House - with pieces they treasured and enjoyed. As collectors and dealers of Canadiana and folk art and with a wide international experience they developed an aesthetic for wonderful objects. The collection holds many traditional items but expands into the playful and unusual. Central to their overall collection is an important selection of carvings and paintings by highly regarded and much sought-after artists: William Loney, the Klatt Brothers, Joe Norris, Félicien Lévesque, Joe Sleep, Colins Eisenhauer, Chief James Beaver and many others. This sale is rounded out with inclusions from a select number of like-minded collectors. Pridham’s is pleased to offer some of the very best in the Canadiana and folk-art collecting areas on October 29th. The Fields are well known in the trade and by collectors alike for their keen eye and excellent taste; this sale is a special occasion not to be missed.

Pennsylvania Dog Carving

A sculpted dog with a hatch carved body, attributed to Pennsylvania carver Aaron Mountz (1873-1949) who learned his carving skills from noted sculptor Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890). Mountz was born near the Conodoguinet Creek at Carlisle, Pa., which was a regular destination for Schimmel. Circa 1940. H: 3.75”; L: 4.75”. Field Collection.

Red Truck Whirligig

A folky sheet iron whirligig of a man in front of his red truck cutting wood on a saw horse. The red truck, which appears to be falling off a cliff, has crudely painted black windows; the sawyer is painted white and the four-blade propellor is tur quoise, all in old surface. Grimsby Foot Stool

A pine foot stool in dry original varnished surface and with a high cut-out bracket base from Grimsby, Ontario, de-accessioned in 1999 from the Inverarden Museum in Cornwall. A pine tea wagon from Prince Edward Island with a large framed top, a lower shelf that is also framed, and Sheraton-style turned legs with large iron casters and spoked metal wheels. George Catlin’s “North American Indians”

Volumes 1 and 2 of George Catlin’s Manners, Customs and Condition of the North American Indians. From 1831-1837, George Catlin, a former lawyer, travelled extensively among the Indigenous tribes of North America, painting and documenting their habits, customs and lifestyle, subsequently publishing the first edition of this historic reference text in 1841. Profusely illustrated with 360 engravings and published by Henry G. Bohn, London. Volume 1 (9th edition) published in 1857; volume 2 (10th edition) published in 1866. This type of decorative work with cut-out stitched images is considered a pre-cursor to the emergence of graphic Native art and felt appliqué pictures in the latter 20th century. Inuit Pitchers

A pair of ironstone pitchers with two Inuit figures (girl Clara and boy Willie) in coloured transfer print highlighted by three gilt bands. Clara and Willie were the children of Manasseh Adams, a mixed-blood trader and Hudson’s Bay dog sled driver. In 1893, Dr Frederick Cook, a Polar explorer, took Clara and Willie from Labrador to New York to promote Arctic exploration using a stage set Inuit camp. The pitchers were sold as souvenirs at these events. The venture was shortlived and in 1894 Cook returned Clara and Willie to Labrador. Very good condition with minor wear and one glaze chip at the backside of the rim on the Willie jug. Maker unknown, very limited production, circa 1893. H: 7”; D: 5-6”. Field Collection.

“Eskimaux” Scenes

A set of three early “Eskimaux” scenes drawn by Capt. George Francis Lyon R.N. (1796-1832) and engraved by Edward Finden (1791-1857). In 1821, Lyon sailed on Commander Perry’s second exploratory Arctic voyage to discover the elusive Northwest Passage and in 1824 he captained the HMS Griper on his second Arctic mission where he spent two years documenting local customs and sketching scenes -- his journals and drawings becoming important historic reference sources. Included are “Esquimaux Men”, “Snow Village of the Esquimaux”, and “Esquimaux Women”. Published April 1824 by John Murray, London. Minor foxing. Each H: 12”; W: 9.5”. Field Collection.

An early finely executed sculpture by Gilbert Desrochers (1926-1990) of a standing bird, presumably a peacock, in red and blue paint with long black legs . This piece was part of a curated exhibition of works by Gilbert Desrochers presented at the McMichael Canadiana Gallery in 1991 and is illustrated (pg. 59) in the catalogue entitled “The Peaceable Kingdom of Gilbert Desrochers — Le Royaume Paisible de Gilbert Desrochers.” Desrochers was a true “outsider” artist who found his calling after years as a farm labourer and serving a couple of rough years at the Kingston Penitentiary. A carving by Carl Johan Trygg (1887-1954) of a gent wearing a top hat and a white scarf standing by a lamp post. C.J. Trygg emigrated from Sweden to Canada in 1928 and settled with his wife and children in Montreal where carving figures in the flat-plane style became the family business. A trademark of Trygg carvings is the high quality of the original paint. Mounted on the original base, signed. Circa 1930, Québec. 7” x 3.25”.

A double-sided work with incised and painted images on a wooden board by Philip Melvin with the self explanatory “The mountie and the hoodlums” on one side and the other side depicting “Chief Black Foot, Crow Foot Indian Leader 1870”. Both sides signed Phil Melvin. Melvin was born in Newfoundland and spent many years on the streets of Toronto and Vancouver, creating his art with found materials and influenced by people or events in his everyday life. 15.75” x 21.75”

A watercolour by Aurora Dixon, 1897, of the abandoned “Lasalle House” on the Lower Lachine Road in Lachine Québec. Robert Lasalle arrived in New France in 1666 and received a land grant from the Sulpician Order in 1667. Because of Lasalle’s obsession with finding a route to the Orient, his seigneurie was nicknamed “La Chine”, eventually becoming the municipality of Lachine. George Wakeling Whimsey Chain

An 11-foot whimsey chain suspended in a chip carved case, sculpted in 1927 by George Wakeling of Windsor, Ontario. The chain is in one piece with a cage at each end, marked Geo Wakeling Dec 1927, and 323 Bridge Ave. Windsor. The frame of the glass case is chip carved and an incised tower in each corner holds a small carved cross. The overall effect of the carved towers and the swagged chain suggest the influence of London’s Tower Bridge. Mounted on top of the case is a hand carved plaque describing the work as well as details about the pen knife used to carve this piece and how it travelled with George throughout the First World War. Included is the pen knife, a medal George received for good behaviour as a “Bernardo boy”, and a hand-written story and album of George Wakeling’s life. The case measures H: 19”; W: 34.25”; D: 9.25”. Klatt Brothers Circus

A unique and important folk art circus “train” complete with exotic animals, wagon drivers, and painted circus wagons with hitched horse teams. The animals are carved with dignity and grace and painted in dry colours while the wagons are detailed with ladders, scalloped sides, wire bars and decorated with scrolled pin striping. The Klatt Brothers circus was carved and built by Hubert Klatt (1917-1997) and Joe Klatt (1913-2003) of Pembroke, Ontario when they were teenagers. Upon completion of the circus the industrious brothers took it to Callander, Ontario, where the Dionne quintuplets were attracting large crowds, and charged 25 cents to view their circus. Later, Hubert continued a carving career based in Pembroke while Joe took on various janitorial jobs in the area while carving for his own enjoyment. The wagons and animals offered were acquired at auction from the estate of Joe Klatt and subsequently displayed in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pembroke museum. The Klatt Bros Circus is also partially illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950 by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 274. In total the offering includes four wagons, three four-horse teams, drivers, as well as eleven animals including elephants, tigers, polar bears, monkeys and a single camel and zebra, all in original paint and very good condition. 4. The Auctioneer does its very best to point out condition issues. You have to examine each piece carefully; sales will not be set aside on grounds of condition, or of real or imagined misdescription. The Auctioneer may accept and submit absentee, telephone and online bids, to be executed by an employee of the Auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. | Pridham’s peut accepter et soumettre des offres par absence, par téléphone ou en ligne, devant être exécutées par un employé de Pridham’s, conformément aux instructions des acheteurs éventuels qui ne peuvent pas être présents.

6. Registration: all bidders are required to submit full name, address and a telephone number. Information is used pursuant to the “Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act”. 8. Unless exempted by law, the buyer must pay applicable taxes on the total purchase price. The buyer’s premium is added before the applicable taxes. 9. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay HST on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of Canada. For items shipped out of the province, the buyer is required to PAY TAXES as per their provincial tax status, whether it is HST, GST and PST. Includes Quebec buyers, there is GST AND QST. À moins d’être exempté par la loi, l’acheteur est tenu de payer la TVH sur le prix d’achat total, y compris la prime de l’acheteur. 10. The Auctioneer has the right to withdraw or add to the items as listed in any printed catalogue or listing or promoted on the internet. | Pridham’s a le droit de retirer ou d’ajouter des items sur une liste ou dans un catalogue imprimé, ou annoncé sur l’internet.

11. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from the sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. | L’Encanteur se réserve le droit de retirer tout lot de la vente, à n’importe quel moment, de diviser un ou plusieurs lots, et ce sans avis.

12. The Auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. | Pridham’s a le droit de refuser toute offre et d’avancer l’appel d’offres à son entière discrétion. 13. When the Auctioneer says “sold” it is a contractual agreement between the Auctioneer and the buyer. All auctions are also audiorecorded. | Lorsque l’Encanteur dit “vendu” cela est tout comme un contrat entre l’acheteur et l’Encanteur. Les encans sont aussi enregistrés par audio.

14. The highest bidder accepted by the Auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. 15. The buyer shall pay an item in full and to the satisfaction of the Auctioneer; failing to do so may result in the cancellation of the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. | L’acheteur doit payer un item au complet et à la satisfaction de Pridham’s, à défaut de quoi, Pridham’s peut annuler la vente, avec ou sans offrir de nouveau l’article à vendre.

16. Payments have to be made in full by Visa, MasterCard (over the telephone, or online with our MONERIS PAGE), or e-transfer within 5 days after receiving their final invoice from Pridham’s (or Live Auctioneers). If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, and art, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS #112 (St Laurent Blvd, Ottawa, store112@theupsstore.ca). Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping QUOTE before the auction (until FRIDAY NOON BEFORE THE SALE), if you are concerned. Sales will not be cancelled due to shipping costs.

If you prefer to use another carrier (not UPS), please take note that Pridham’s does not pack and insure - but we would be pleased to liaise with the shipper of your choice.

For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. We can not store furniture for weeks, please have a plan of action before buying large pieces, or a storage fee may apply.

19. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items, including Rosewood, are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application service. The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of all wildlife. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale (et même le Bois de rose) ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la CITES (Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction).
