28 CARVED WOODEN WALKING STICK A unique and good carved wooden folk art walking stick with a man’s face in a portion of the handle. The handle also has finger grips carved into it. 32 CHIPWARE CARVED BOX An extensively chip carved, graduated, footed storage box in oak with multiple layers of applied carving including four quadrants on the lid with four three tiered layers of chip carved triangles in each. Each side has a similar treatment with two quadrants of triangles. Near perfect condition (one very minor chip on the right side) in original varnish. Brass hinges. Round nails. 41 EXCEPTIONAL LINSEY WOOLSEY BAR QUILT A pioneer quilt made during the latter half of the 19th century by Linsey Woolsey. The bars were fitted and pieced together with homespun fabric and wools taken from the quilter’s quilt stock of materials. 43 VERY LARGE DEER & DOE HOOKED RUG Made of wools and cottons, this large hooked rug has been mounted on a stretcher for hanging purposes. A true work of textile art; the subtle night background creates the imagery of two deer settling in the quiet of the forest for the evenings rest. A unique portrayal of nature through textile art. 44 RARE MASONIC SAMPLER A rare and interesting sampler worked by the Children of the “Royal Free Masons’ School In commemoration of the Jubilee of the Church Missionary Society”, dated Nov. 1st, 1848. Excellent condition and has been professionally conserved and reframed. Measuring, 24” height x 16” width (at sight). Note: ROYAL MASONS’ SCHOOL (RMS) is one of the oldest girls’ schools in the country (England). Founded by Chevalier Ruspini in 1788, the School’s original purpose was to educate the daughters of Free Masons who were unable to support their families through death, illness or disability. The school started with fifteen pupils and a matron in Somers Place in East London and moved twice within London until it finally settled in the magnificent grounds of Rickmansworth Park in l934. 52 DUCK DECOY BY DAVEY W. NICHOL A finely carved and painted male Green Wing A finely carved and painted male Green Wing Teal decoy created by the late Davey W. Nichol (1890-1977) of Smiths Falls, Ontario. Printed in white letters on the bottom of the decoy: “MALE GREEN WING TEAL BY D.W. NICHOL, SMITHS FALLS, ONT.” Carved circa 1950. This decoy has had a repair to the bill, expertly done by the late Warren Snider. Measuring, 5” height x 11” length x 4” width. 111 RARE RUGS FROM ANTHONY FLOWER COLLECTION These three 19th century rugs were purchased directly from the original estate sale in McDonalds Corners, of the renown Canadian Artist, Anthony Flower, New Brunswick, Canada. This home (built in 1818) was removed from the original farm site a few miles up the road to Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick, to become a designated historical site of the artist along with his family history. Anthony Flower put a major stamp through his art of New Brunswick depicting the significant social history of this area. His works are found in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, as well as other major museums and galleries throughout Canada. The rugs would have been hooked by his wife with Anthony Flower drawing the patterns. Other rugs from this home are still in the original site home along with other Museums and Galleries in New Brunswick. 1. Birds and Floral hooked rug, circa 1860, worked with hand dyed wools on burlap. Stylized birds on branches amongst leaves and flowers creates this amazing artistic imagery. Measuring, 49 1/2” x 34”. This mat has been professionally conserved and cleaned and mounted on a stretcher for hanging purposes. A truly beautiful, rare and exceptional piece of Canadian textile art. 2. Floral hooked rug, circa 1860, worked with hand dyed wools on burlap. The pattern to the bouquets of flowers are artistically arranged and symmetrically thought out. Expertly hooked using the ‘relief hooking’ technique with the flowers. Original condition with strong colours still effective to maintain the importance of this rare historical piece of textile art. 118 RARE LOWER CANADA BRONZE MEASURE An important Pre-Confederation Lower Canada Bronze Measure. The belted circular body sided by open handles and exhibiting a fine original patina overall, the front dated in script 1860, the underside bearing French foundry marks “O. St. Amant”. In 1860, Lower Canada - now Quebec, received approximately four sets of standard weights & measures, each engraved with the date 1860 and the letters V.R.L.C. (Victoria Regina Lower Canada) over each measurement stated, as per this example noting 1/2 Minot (the French term for the equivalence of a British half bushel). 119 DIAMOND POINT ARMOIRE An important diamond point armoire in original blue paint, pine construction with original unpainted interior, the frame shows pegged construction throughout while the cornice and moulding are fitted with rose head nails, a caisson back showing four boards, hand forged fiche hinges along with original brass escutcheon, wooden door latch fitted with a large rose head nail. This beautiful early example has double raised panels on both sides. The front top panels have a large central carved diamond relief, with the bottom showing four-point diamond St. Andrews cross. 179 MAP OF THE MARITIMES BY CLARA CAIE The “Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island” map, artistically drawn by Clara Caie (1874-1955), granddaughter of ship owner Samuel Killan, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The neatness, accuracy and penmanship is evident. This work was completed in April 1888; a pure gem that was passed through the family. Condition noted, foxing. 185 LOUIS XV QUÉBEC PINE ARMOIRE An exceptional Louis XV Québec pine armoire in original blue paint. Double raised panels on the sides, well carved front panels with scrolling decoration. Original shelves and interior in faded old paint, original fiche hinges, gouge work decoration to the cornice (early replacement?), and overall peg construction. The back shows a good four paneled caisson construction. Lacks original lock and escutcheon, repair required to lower right leg where it meets the apron. The overall curvilinear shape suggests elements of the Louis XIII style. A wonderful “petit exemple” of early Québécois furniture, late 18th century. 206 LIFE-SIZED FOLK CARVING BY WALTER COOK She has a woebegone countenance indicating the challenges of many Acadians. Attributed to Walter Cook (1923-1991) - a skilled folk artist from Nova Scotia. Active after WWII from the 1950s to 1980s - although he took a long hiatus during that period. The surface has mellowed to a rich patina on the pine. The arms are removable. 243 MASONIC BOX A very good Masonic chest with inlay and brass embellishments. In original condition, with leather handles, and the wallpaper interior. Provenance: Purchased from the Estate of James H. Smith, a Member of Lodge 14, Upper Mills, New Brunswick. Circa 1880. Note: Upper Mills is a short distance from St. Stephen, the border town opposite Calais, Maine (USA). There was a strong association between Calais Maine Lodge 46 and Lodge 14. Alley Lodge No. 14, Upper Mills, St. Stephen, was first opened August 5th, 1855 and was formally constituted on July 10th 1856. E.H. Vose, a physician and cabinetmaker, probably crafted this box for Mr. Smith, although that is not verified. James Howard Smith was accepted into the fraternity of Free Masons of New Brunswick Lodge 14 in 1869. Documentation with the box. The history and quality of this chest is exceptional. 255 MAPLE CANOE PADDLE A hardwood canoe paddle beautifully carved and fashioned from maple. The perfectly shaped handle must have been placed too close to the fire at some point because it bears black singe marks on one side. However, after decades of use, the burn mark has been smoothed out completely. Original varnished condition. Old, stable five inch narrow split at the bottom of the blade. Circa 1930. 348 AMISH RAG DOLL Made using scraps of material that were on hand the day of making. The dress was probably the child’s dress which she had outgrown. The shawl, remnants of the mother’s or grandmother’s shawl. The face did not originally have features due to lack of vanity in the Amish community. The child would often draw these features later with little reprimand from mother. Of museum quality, this rag doll came from the Amish/Mennonite communities of Eastern Ontario, late 19th Century.
