Beatrice Hindley (1882-1973) British, a stunning collection of 21 hand-wrought miniature metal flowers, each painstakingly formed & soldered by hand, hand- painted and set within a naturalistically modelled ground, then ‘potted’ in their original hand-made & hand-painted ceramic pots. The plants, some of which - but not necessarily illustrated in order are: Tulips, Tulip Tree, Narcissus, Freesia, Anemone, Saxifrage, Primula, Hyacinth, Bulbs, Gentian, Auricula, Winter Aconite, etc. All 21 plants are mounted within their original dedicated three tiered & glass encased stage. The tallest miniature ‘Tulip Tree’ measures a mere 5” high. In addition to the miniatures themselves, an original 1927 Leicester Galleries catalogue referencing an exhibition of Ms. Hindley’s work titled ‘MINIATURE PLANTS by BEATRICE HINDLEY’ is included in the purchase, as well as other related material, photos, etc. All 21 miniatures remain in very good overall condition, the ‘Tulip Tree’ with minor losses, but have been retained, a few pots with minor cracks, the stage exhibiting minor surface wear, portions of loss to molding. Dimensions of stage, 11.5” high x 16” wide x 12” deep. Note: Ms. Hindley is quoted here, taken in part from a magazine article as saying...”Each plant is made entirely by hand. No two are alike either in their bowls or in their detail. I design and paint a suitable bowl to every plant”. “My plants are extremely strong, though they look so fragile. They are made of metal, and each joint is separately soldered. They are based upon hours of study in gardens and at Kew (Gardens)”. Provenance: Princess Patricia Ramsay to her close personal friend, Enid Strathearn Hendrie Owen, to an Owen Family Member (current owner). Estimation 15,000-20,000 $

A late 19th / early 20th century bronze of a hound, green / black patina, modelled on a naturalistic ground, signed in the mold Barye with foundry marks for Alfred Daubrée, measuring 6.75” h x 11.5” w x 4.25” d. Note: Alfred Daubrée(1810-1855) was both a French sculptor & maker of bronzes working at 21 rue St-Dizier, Nancy. He later moved to a shop at 85 rue Montmartre in Paris and in 1855 he opened his own atelier for art bronzes. He was well thought of regarding the quality of his work and executed bronzes for Antoine-Louis Barye in 1850, later handling works for Charles Cumberworth, Léopold Kamf, and Louis Menessier, as well as many works for Christophe Fratin. Fratin’s work was sometimes marked DAUBRÉE and A. DAUBRÉE EDITEUR, though these markings were rarely applied to Barye’s bronzes.

Louis Apol, (untitled) hauling firewood, oil on panel, 7” h x 10.5” w. Note: A prominent representative of the Hague School, Louis Apol specialized in winter landscapes. His winter scenes often included structures like fences or bridges to remind viewers of humanities presence within the natural world. In this painting, Apol uses loose brush strokes to depict a man hauling firewood through a snowy lane. The piece is illuminated by the soft light of a late winter afternoon. Like his counterparts in the Barbizon School, Apol worked to paint the natural scenes around him as they really were, demonstrating the shift from romanticism to realism at the turn of the century. Apol made a significant contribution to the work of the Hague School and many of his pieces can now be found in The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

58 ALEXEI108

Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov, Imperial Academy of Arts, oil on canvas,(untitled) leaving the harbour, signed lower right, 11.25” h x 17.5” w. Note: “Leaving the Harbour,” as we have titled it, demonstrates Bogolyubov transitional shift from Romanticism to Realism. Bogolyubov began his artistic career studying under Maxim Vorobiev at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. Vorobiev’s dedication to the romantic style heavily influenced Bogolyubov’s early works. However, once Bogolyubov graduated he spent many years travelling across Europe, working in Italy, Germany, and France. In Paris, he connected with Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny, members of the Barbizon School. Bogolyubov’s work began to embrace the ways of the Barbizon School—painting the world as they saw it—without the emotive melodrama found in the predominant romantic style of the time. In “Leaving the Harbour” the visibility of the brush strokes in the sky and water point to the Barbizon Schools influence, whereas the scene itself still contains elements of Romanticisms love for melodrama. The choice to depict sailors traversing choppy waters as they make their way to their ship leads the viewer to contemplate the dangers of the seas. The rough waters and subdued colour palette hint to future tumultuous storms the sailors may have to face on their journey. Despite these suggestions, the use of a softer more realistic lighting, compared to the drastic contrast of light and shadow found in romantic pieces, points to Bogolyubov’s newfound appreciation of realism. Together, these various stylistic influences make “Leaving the Harbour” an exemplary work of Bogolyubov’s transition from Romanticism to Realism. The stylistic shift he made abroad deeply affected his return to Russia. Instead of following the ways of his Russian predecessors, his works lost all traces of Romanticism and were replaced with a staunch realism that led him to work with a group of younger Russian artists, The Wanderers, in the latter part of his career. GAETANO139

Gaetano Gandolfi, (double sided), seated nude man recto, nude man with staff verso, graphite on watermarked paper, watermark GS under an anchor within a circle surmounted by a star, heavy frame, 17” h x 12” w. Provenance: Important Montreal Collection. Note: Gaetano Gandolfi was born to a family of artists outside of Bologna in 1734. Gaetano was one of the most prominent artists in his family, along with his brother Ubaldo. Gaetano studied under Felice Torelli and Ercole Lelli at the Accademia Clementina in Bologna. In this double-sided graphite on watermarked paper, Gandolfi demonstrates his allegiance to Lelli’s methods of anatomical figural studies. Lelli, unlike other teachers of his time, taught using wax models and prints which explain the precise nature of Gateano’s figural drawings. Together, the Gandolfi brothers made up the predominant artistic influence in late eighteenth-century Bologna, and because of their prolific output and their activity as teachers, reverberations of their strong stylistic identity were evident throughout North Italy.

Albert Cuyp, (untitled) graceful barnyard, large oil on canvas, signed lower right, 35” h x 50.5” w. Provenance: Prominent Montreal gentleman. Note: Albert Cuyp’s graceful barnyard work is likely one of the last grand paintings of his life. Once Cuyp married in 1658, his artistic career gradually came to a halt. In the early 1650s, Cuyp transitioned away from landscape painting and created many large-scale works that focused on foreground figures. Here, Cuyp depicts various large scale barnyard duck & birds which are highlighted by his masterful use of the full chromatic scale of twilight colours. The application of light brown and straw yellow tones, which Cuyp learned early on in his career from the prolific Dutch painter Jan van Goyen, give the subjects an added depth and luminosity that sets Cuyp’s work apart from his contemporaries.

18. If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road, Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS. Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are commensurate with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping quote before the auction, if you are concerned, not after you buy an item. Sales will not be cancelled if shipping is too expensive. For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. We can not store furniture for weeks, please have a plan of action before buying large pieces, or a storage fee may apply.
