DUBAI DO’S AND DON’TS By Lavinia Ambrosie

T

hinking about a holiday in the UAE, or maybe you

are considering the possibilities of employment here? There are a few things you need to know before you come and while you are here. Dubai is a fabulous city with the most genuine, hospitable and courteous people you are likely to encounter anywhere in the world. But this is not the US nor Europe, this is the UAE steeped in centuries of tradition and devout religious following. One of the reasons I’m sure you are looking to travel to the UAE is to experience the deep and rich history and traditions on offer. But as in many other countries they have their own ways of doing things which need to be respected. You may have considered putting off or cancelling a visit to Dubai or other cities in the UAE because of horror stories you may have heard about in the press. So let us give you THE FACTS.... Most of the stories you hear are just rumours, some are based on fact but written with a twisted perspective. Let us ask you this.... What would happen in your country if someone was bringing in controlled drugs or driving whilst heavily under the influence of alcohol? Well it is not different in the UAE, you will be arrested and possibly face imprisonment. If you openly disobey the laws of ANY country you have to face the consequences. Always remember that you are in a different country with a different cultural and belief system to the majority of westerners, you can seem as strange to them as they might sometimes appear to you. It is like the old saying “When in Rome” - it is just common courtesy to respect your hosts as we expect visitors to our country to respect our laws and traditions.

To ensure that your stay is memorable, for all the right reasons, keep in mind that you are no longer in your own country. Respect the laws and values of the country and your stay should be an extremely enjoyable one!

Traditions: The UAE is built on generations of Islamic traditions which are rooted firmly in its culture and tribal heritage. These traditions have been passed down from generation to generation and form the very cornerstone of every day life for an Emirati family. The Emirati are friendly people who show tolerance and an open minded approach to visitors in their country but their culture and values should always be respected.

12|Prima Dubai

Expat Community: In the last 30 years, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the other Emirates have gone through a total transformation from small Arab trading ports into modern cities. Over 150 nationalities (including an estimated 100,000 British expats) contribute to the UAE’s modern society. The streets, shopping malls and business areas are alive with numerous languages and cultures. Do keep in mind that you will probably meet many people with different values and opinions.

Social Ethics: The culture and laws in the UAE are designed to ensure that everyone is respectful of each other regardless of their faith and nationality. Visitors and residents alike should avoid all types of improper conduct and behaviour which can otherwise lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation.

Dress code: Emirati dress conservatively in traditional dress and can be offended when people dress inappropriately or not in accordance with Islamic values. In public places such as shopping malls, restaurants and parks, you are encouraged to dress appropriately. Clothing should not be transparent, indecently expose parts of the body or display offensive pictures or slogans. Be careful as well if you are tattooed with what could be deemed offensive images or slogans. If in doubt, cover up. Be aware that if you enter one of these areas dressed inappropriately you may be asked to leave (most of the larger shopping malls display signs warning respectable clothing should be worn). Any form of nudity is strictly forbidden, including topless sunbathing. Swimwear should not be worn in any other area except the beach, water parks, or swimming pools. It is preferable for both men and women to have their shoulders and knees covered and for women not to reveal too much decolletage when not on the beach or at a hotel. It is not appropriate for men to walk along the street bare-chested. Prima Dubai |13

Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is allowed only for Non-Muslims in licensed restaurants, bars, clubs, private venues, and at home (for residents who have acquired an alcohol licence). It is against the law to drink alcohol while walking in the street or to be drunk in a public place. For those living in the UAE a special licence must be obtained before purchasing alcohol from exclusive, specialised, licensed stores. This licence is only a permit for buying alcohol. It does not give any immunity for alcohol related criminal offences. It is an offence to carry alcohol in your car if you do not hold the special alcohol licence. If you come to the attention of the police you may be arrested, even though you may have purchased the alcohol legally. You need to be 21 or over in order to drink alcohol legally in the UAE (18 in Abu Dhabi). Alcohol is not available in Sharjah.

Drugs: Drugs are strictly forbidden; even a residual amount. Consuming or carrying drugs, even if you are transiting through the airport from one country to another, can result in a standard 4-year imprisonment and deportation. Buying or selling narcotics is considered a serious crime which can result in life imprisonment. Some medicines (accepted in other countries) containing psychotropic substances are also forbidden, so check out the UAE relevant embassy website for further information.

Driving: The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy towards drinking and driving. You can be charged and imprisoned if you are caught with even the smallest amount of alcohol in your system. If your are going to drink, get a cab our use the metro. Tailgating, speeding, racing, lane jumping and using a mobile phone while driving are all against the law. There are numerous speed cameras on the roads and motorways. Fines in the UAE are heavy. If you are caught you may also face the possibility of having your car impounded. Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory. Jay walking is also illegal and the police, particularly in Abu Dhabi, have launched a campaign against jay walking. If you are caught committing this offence you could be subjected to a fine.

14|Prima Dubai

Over the counter or doctor prescribed medications: If you are using doctor prescribed drugs it is advisable to carry a doctor’s note. If you are bringing prescription drugs into the UAE you may need to seek prior agreement from the authorities. You should check with the nearest UAE Embassy or Consulate before you travel.

Respect for religion: Islamic religious values are greatly respected in the UAE. Showing any disrespect towards religious beliefs or practices is considered deeply offensive and very likely to result in a heavy fine and/or imprisonment. Other religions are respected and can be followed by the expatriate community. Follow few simple rules of respect: Muslims pray five times a day. You will notice that the mosques call people to pray through a speaker system. At this time you will also notice public music is turned off as Muslims perform their daily prayers.Be aware that drivers who are not close to a mosque, may stop at a convenient lay-by to pray privately. Ramadan: MANY OTHER GUIDES WILL TELL YOU NOT TO VISIT THE UAE DURING RAMADAN - WE SAY, PROVIDED YOU ARE WILLING TO FOLLOW A FEW BASIC RULES, ‘DO’ VISIT AS ITS A WONDERFUL TIME TO OBSERVE THE LOCAL CULTURE.

Alcohol can be purchased at licensed bars and restaurants from sunset onwards and most activities such as golf clubs, shopping malls, attractions and spas are open as usual but with altered opening timings. Most venues that would normally have live music will not during Ramadan except OUD (arabic guitar). The city really comes alive at night when visitors can join the muslim population to break their fast ‘Iftar’ and flock with friends and family to large tents to feast on a mouth-watering array of local dishes, smoke traditional shisha pipes and listen to traditional music such as the famous oud players. One point to note is that visitors should wear respectful clothing during this time - take a look at the ‘Know Before You Go’ guide for more information.

During the holy month of Ramadan, muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Throughout this month eating, drinking, smoking, playing loud music and dancing in public places during daylight hours are strictly forbidden and punishable by law, including for non-Muslims. This consumption ban will include general public indoor areas as well, although many of the larger hotels will have special screened off areas for non-Muslims to eat and drink during these hours freely with the exception of alcohol which will only be served after sundown. Pregnant women and the infirm are excluded from the fast. Every evening during Ramadan, muslims celebrate the breaking of their fast with an evening meal called ‘Iftar’. You will find many hotels and restaurants throughout the UAE who provide Iftar buffets. The golden rule is always be mindful and respectful of locals traditions and beliefs. Visiting Dubai during Ramadan gives tourists a unique and authentic holiday experience. Ramadan commemorates the time when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. While international Muslims abstain from all food, drinks, smoking and live music from dawn to dusk throughout the month, international hotels and resorts in U.A.E continue to serve meals to international visitors in screened of areas as it is not permissible even for international visitors to eat and drink in public areas, this is also a common courtesy and mark of respect as a guest to the country you are visiting

And don’t forget Eid Al-Fitr, which is a three day festival for all that marks the end of Ramadan. Families exchange gifts, there are special public events arranged and yet more eating of delicious Arabic cuisine.

The UAE is a relatively safe country from a crime perspective. Nevertheless, when you are out and about, take the necessary precautions to stay safe just as you would if you were in your own country. If you are going to visit bars and clubs, do not accept drinks from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended. While rare, having your drink spiked in the UAE can happen. Sexual relationships outside of marriage are illegal, irrespective of any relationship you may have with your partner in your own country. Cohabiting, including in hotels, is also illegal. If you become pregnant outside of marriage, both you and your partner face the possibility of imprisonment. There are also legal ramifications when registering the birth with the local authorities.

16|Prima Dubai

Pornography and pornographic images, media and websites are banned in the UAE. Sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public, or taking their photos without pemission, is strictly frowned upon. Holding hands for married couples is tolerated but kissing and hugging are considered offenses against public decency. Open displays of affection are generally not tolerated. Offensive language, spitting and aggressive behaviour (including hand gestures) are viewed very seriously and can result in imprisonment and deportation. This includes “road range. Dancing is allowed in the privacy of your home or at licensed clubs, but dancing in public is classed as indecent and provocative. Smoking is forbidden in government areas, offices and shopping malls. There are however many designated areas where smoking is allowed.

Must Know Before You Go Religion In the UAE, the official religion is Islam. You will definitely notice some of the breathtaking mosques around the country, and will hear the call to prayer 5 times a day (known as the Azaan). Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosques except at the Jumeirah Mosque. However, Dubai is pretty tolerant with other religions and is home to large expat communities of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and others. Dubai also houses places of worship of other religions.

Language Arabic is the official language spoken in the UAE, although everywhere around the city just about everybody speaks English, especially in places of tourism and commerce. Other commonly used languages include Hindi, Farsi and Urdu. Tourists and non-Arabic speakers should have no problem communicating in Dubai.

Climate & Currency One would describe Dubai’s climate as a tropical desert climate, as summer temperatures do reach up to the mid and high 40’s during the day and remain in the 30’s overnight. The winter months are much milder and cooler, with the average temperature being around 20C during daytime and going down to even 12C-14C by night. From December to March the cool weather in the winter occasionally witnesses some rainfall, so travel prepared! The Arab Emirati Dirham is the local currency used in Dubai. The UAE dirham ranks from 5 to 1,000 Dirham bills. The coins come in 25, 50 fils and 1 Dirham. It’s a good idea to always keep smaller bills to pay for cheaper items like metro since it may be hard to get change for 500 or 1,000 bills.

Population Dubai’s population is estimated to be approximately 2.1 million people out of which approximately 85% comprise of an expat population. The expat population chiefly comprise of Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Filipinos. British expats is the largest group of Western expats in Dubai. It also has sizeable community of Iranians.

The design and architecture of Souk Madina recreates Middle Eastern bazaars with myriads of shops crammed together. The small stalls in souk madina are piled high with many alluring souvenirs. It’s easier and more comfortable to shop here since Souk Madinat is completely air conditioned. The bazaar features 95 shops and galleries and more than 25 waterfront cafes, restaurants and bars. The shops include Braschi (Italian Fur Coats), National Iranian Carpets (Persian Carpets), Gallery one (photographic prints of Dubai), Pride of Kashmir (Kahmiri Shawls, Carpets and Furnishing), Al Jaber Gallery (Souvenirs, Handicrafts, books and gifts), Rivoli (luxury watches) and many more. 3, 2, 1 ........We Did It Again!

By Fatima Anwar

A

s always, Dubai welcomed the New Year with the customary fireworks but this year it was bigger and better. This year Dubai fireworks broke the Guinness World Record for the largest pyrotechnics show on the New Year’s Eve. A six minute show was arranged at Burj Khalifa and The Palm Jumeirah which was completely controlled by 100 laptop networked together, 1000 local and international experts, 200 technicians and was designed by the famous US Company Grucci. It took 10 months to prepare this momentary display costing an amount of $6 million.

46|Prima Dubai

More than 50,000 fireworks exploded, covering 62 miles of Dubai’s seafront and ended with a grand “artificial sunset.” Each display narrated a story of the UAE’s incredible triumph, Dubai’s spirit, positivity and ambition with the perfect orchestrated music of Downtown Dubai playing ‘The Centre of Now’ at the Burj Khalifa. The number of fireworks launched in one minute broke Kuwait’s one-hour long show of 77,282 fireworks. It’s reported that as part of the rigorous verification process, Guinness World Records adjudicators physically counted all fireworks before and after the performance, also suggesting visibility from space.

Talal Omar, Guinness World Record’s adjudicator, said: “This is an iconic record title that has been challenged and broken on a phenomenal scale by Dubai. I am pleased to confirm that Dubai has achieved a new Guinness World Record title for the ‘Largest Fireworks Display’. This record breaking show was live streamed on Youtube and numerous other Emirati channels. It attracted millions across the globe to witness how Dubai welcomed the 2014 in its own outstanding and impressive style. Whether the tallest tower in the world, the world’s tallest residential tower, the world’s most busiest airport, the world’s most expensive cupcake or the world’s biggest fireworksDubai has proved itself to be the best and the most ambitious.

The Center of Now By Cezalyn Villagomez

Since the 1960’s Dubai International Airport has undergone enormous development creating tremendous opportunities and possibilities that Dubai’s residents never imagined. Dubai Airport is the most developed infrastructure with the latest technology in UAE. In the beginning Dubai aircrafts carried passengers to and from 20 destinations and now hundreds of aircrafts travel through Dubai making it the significant hub for all global flights. Dubai is aiming to build more aircrafts and terminals that could fly to more destinations. There are two airports in Dubai- Al Makhtoum International Airport and The DubaiInternational Airport. The airport located in Dubai World Central is comparatively new but the Dubai International Airport is the oldest and largest. It has three terminals. Terminal one is known as Sheikh Rashid Terminal and is the main terminal in Dubai. It has its own five star hotel and numerous lounges and outlets that you can stop by while waiting for your departure or during your stopover after the check in.

58|Prima Dubai

Terminal 2 covers low cost carriers and chartered flights. This terminal has minimal services to offer, yet will be worth visiting their small outlets that will meet your needs. Terminal 3 is Emirates exclusive terminal. It is said to be the most spacious and luxurious, with bigger lounges and waiting areas, more cafĂŠs and restaurants. Inside the terminal they have exhibited the timeline of Dubai, where you can learn about the journey of Dubai from a desert to a city. There are shuttle services to transfer pax between terminals.

The newly opened airport in Dubai World Central is called Al Maktoum International Airport. Currently the airport is open for all services and few of the operations from Terminal 1 and 2 are being transferred to this airport. Dubai Airports have evolved over the years, with upgraded machines and systems for quicker and smoother transactions and processes before flight. The airports are continuously being improvised to meet the high standards and to surpass all expectations.

As the Expo 2020 is approaching, the Dubai International Airports will be the center of now across the globe, that will bring each and every one of us closer than ever.

The Grand Mosque is known for its immaculate white colour and the calligraphy of Quranic verses and Islamic ornamentations on the white marble walls and columns. Materials for this iconic landmark was imported from various parts of the world including Germany, Italy, Greece, China and Australia. Thousands of labourers and almost 38 contractors served day and night in the establishment of this beautiful and gigantic mosque. Moorish, Mughal and Arabic- the architecture of the Grand Mosque draws people from all faiths and religions together. It has an intricate lightning system that changes with the different phases of the moon, dark blue when the moon is crescent and white when there’s a full moon. The Arabic calligraphy, the floral marble area, the columns encrusted with semi-precious stones, the domes covered with white marble and 24 carat gold, the creation with solid black American Walnut, hand-cut Mother of Pearl from Cebu Island and Silver inlay workeverything used in the construction of the mosque boasts of sheer elegance and richness 70|Prima Dubai

A hand crafted Iranian Carpet is laid inside the main prayer hall. Special weavers were called from Iran to the site of the mosque and they weaved 2,268,000 knots, making this the world’s biggest carpet. The traditionally floral designed carpet weighs an astounding 35 tons. The main prayer hall also features the third largest chandelier in the world which is encrusted with thousands of swarovski crystals from Australia and glasswork from Italy. A striking contrast to the rich dÊcor of the mosque is the tomb of Sheikh Zayed which is comparatively very simple and sombre. Prayers are recited 24 hours a day on Sheikh Zayed’s tomb and no one is allowed to click pictures in that zone. The amazing guided tours to the mosque take place in the morning and afternoons. After a fun time shopping, this informative and entertaining trip is a good way to learn more about the roots of UAE culture and religion. After the tour of the mosque, all travelers are given a fair chance to ask any question regarding Islam and Islamic practices which are answered commendably by the tour guides. The men are requested to dress conservatively and women are asked to don abayas and cover their heads with a scarf as a sign of respect to Islamic religion.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is definitely an amazing landmark that one must visit even if their stay in Abu Dhabi is for a few hours. It has an unmatchable and welcoming aura that will relax and rejuvenate you with its elegant architecture, spiritual feel and lush environment. Prima Dubai |71

Symbol Of The Region By Fatima Anwar

F

alconry has a deep association with UAE for centuries. Originally a supplementary diet for Bedouins, Falconry is now mainly a leisure sport. The commonly hunted preys include MacQueens, Bustard, Houbara or Hare and special heed is paid to prevent extinction of endangered species. The two main species of falcons tamed in UAE are the Saker and Peregrine. Trapping and training a falcon undoubtedly requires exceptional skills and tolerance topped with a generous amount of bravery. Though a dangerous sport, it attracts a lot of people as it gives the opportunity to view the power, grace and beauty of a falcon in a flight, upclose. The falconer has to train the falcon with immense patience and skill. The falcon’s eyes are covered with a leather hood, tethered around its ankles and it is deprived of food. The falconer has to spend quality time with the falcon and constantly call it with a name to establish a close relationship so that in the future the bird can recognize his voice from far away.

72|Prima Dubai

In the beginning the falcon can make short flights- from the perch to the falconer’s hand. The legs are restrained but the hood is removed. When the bird recognizes the falconer’s voice from a distance of 100 yards the falcon is given some meat as a reward. Further training includes teaching a falcon to hold a captured bustard for some time without killing it and is rewarded often with meat for controlling their temptation. Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed have shown immense importance to Falconry- an integral part of UAE’s lifestyle. A striking event was recorded back in 2003 when Sheikh Mohammed’s falcon brought down a deer many times its own weight. Under the direction of the Environmental Research and Wildlife Department Agency, the Shiekh Zayed Falcon Release Project is responsible for returning falcons to the wild at the end of each hunting year. The project believes that the falcons must live in their natural environment and be given full medical check ups at Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital to ensure only healthy birds enter the wild population. The birds are fed extra food so that they have enough fat to survive on once they’re set free. A microchip is inserted beneath their skin for later identification. The falcons are made to undergo a rigorous exercise plan to ensure they are released in peak conditions, such immense care and steps taken by the late Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed have ensured that falconry combats modernization and survives. UAE’s culture and history is very dear to the Emiratis hence they are constantly working to improve and preserve it. Thus, they are immensely respected by the residents and tourists alike. P | Time Out It’s Amazing What You Will See In The Dark Noire Dining In The Dark At... ‘‘Spectrum on One’’ By Prerana Sonawane

L

et me capture your attention by saying the ‘Noire’ night which means ‘black’ in French is literally dining in the dark. This captivating and enthralling experience is like no other. We all know how important first impressions are, and what if you cannot SEE to judge but only TASTE, TOUCH & SMELL? Located at Fairmont on the first floor, the lift opens to a huge marble floor with a white bar on the left. That’s the first stop before you step into the darkness. Here we were handed a drink in a black glass and had to play a game of guessing the ingredients! Surprisingly I guessed both of them – A refreshing orange and ginger ale drink. Then we were greeted by the restaurant manager; Mr. Sunny who gave us a briefing and introduced us to the not-sonormal waitrons for the not-so-normal restaurant.

102|Prima Dubai

We stood in a line guided by the waitron wearing night vision goggles and followed him into complete darkness to be escorted to our not at all visible tables. Once seated, we were told where the cutlery was placed on the table and asked to feel around and get an idea. The restaurant is completely blackened out except for the tiny dots from the night vision goggles moving around. It took a while to get accustomed to the blackness. The first thought that came to mind was this would be the perfect place to go on a blind date as you literally cannot see your partner! I noticed they had placed bread on the left plate and a glass of fine Italian wine on the right, and soon we were served potato salad. The fun started when everyone began to guess the ingredients used in each dish as no one was told what the dishes were.

Next came the tantalizing appetizer of smoked and oven-baked prawns with daikon radish, chalets, cabbage with soya and vinegar jus. The smell was enough to tell you how delicious this dish was. We were soon served a palate cleanser – Raspberry Sorbet, funnily enough we thought it tasted a little orange with a hint of lemon flavor. For the main course, they definitely kept us guessing with a dish of soft chicken with crispy chicken skin, mushrooms, carrots, polenta, duck sauce and teriyaki sauce completely throwing us off with no one able to guess the true ingredients besides the chicken. Once we were all refreshed with the hot towels, I was surprised to find a pre-dessert shot kept in front of me, it tasted like Baileys and Kahlua, when it actually turned out to be a concoction of gin, blue curacao, whipped cream and hazelnut syrup!

An Exciting Voyage The Fish Market

or our March-April Issue, I chose The Fish Market Restaurant in Radisson Blu Hotel and I must say it was the best choice! As I confirmed my reservation, a waitress dressed in an elegant purple and gold Thai style gown took me towards my table. To regenerate the essence of a normal fish market they furnished the roof with straws and wooden lanterns. As I settled in the matted chairs, I couldn’t stop admiring the view of the beautiful Deira Creek from the floor to ceiling glass window. Once we were settled and familiarized with the restaurant ambience, the waitress took us towards the ‘market corner.’ An utterly clean area with a variety of raw sea food displayed on a bed of ice. After we selected the seafood and how we wanted the chef to cook it, we moved on to the vegetable corner where we handpicked fresh vegetables and decided how we wanted it to be served. For the visitors ease they have pictures above the counters that exhibit how the food will look like once it’s ready. For our starters we selected Seafood Tom Yam Soup, Fresh Arabic Salad and Shrimps in Lemon Butter Sauce and Fried Tiger Prawns. We went with Salmon in Thai Red Curry and Crabs with garlic pepper sauce for main course. While our raw picks were carried to the kitchen in a straw basket we were served crackers with soy sauce and chilli garlic sauce. Before serving our meals the waitress helped us don the special aprons with a fish market logo printed on them.

106|Prima Dubai

The restaurant serves a wide range of beverages including wines, cocktails, fresh juices and coffees. I chose an invigorating freshly squeezed orange juice. The Tom Yam Soup with shrimps, broccoli and mushrooms was the perfect portion to get us started on our seafood voyage. It had an excellent zing and spice to it.

The Tiger Prawns had a perfect crisp golden brown cover and were lightly marinated allowing us to enjoy the tenderness of the prawns. As I took the first bite of my shrimps in lemon butter sauce there was an explosion of butter that I think could have been controlled by a little more lemon zest in the dish. It was definitely a great experience ‘excavating’ the flesh from the crab shell. The Crab with ginger pepper sauce had an incredible strong flavor and color with a dash of pepper. Next was the soft grilled halwa fish with vegetable fried rice. Garnished with herbs, pepper and ginger this was definitely a nice pause to all the strong and spicy flavors.

Last but not the least, the fish thai curry was absolute perfection. The appetizing aroma of coconut and the texture and colour of the freshly chopped thai chillis was commendable. I liked the twist in the usual thai curry that was the creative addition of peas and beans. We were so full by this time, that my friends and I preferred sharing a hazelnut truffle out of the exotic range of mousse, truffles, ice cream and fruit platter from a beautiful and large tray with the samples of each desert that the waitress bought to our table. The spongy feel and the divine chocolate flavor is enough to quench your chocolate craving.

By the end of the food you’ll definitely empty your wallet but honestly it’s worth every penny! By Fatima Anwar

Chamas A Brazilian Experience

B

ringing traditional Brazilian cuisine to Dubai at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road is the meaty Chamas restaurant. Now I say ‘meaty’ for a reason. But let’s get back to that in a bit. The moment we entered the restaurant, I felt a very friendly vibe with the staff being so hospitable. The restaurant décor is all dark wooden giving it elegance with splashes of red, black and brown surrounding you. A beautifully lined wine cellar was visible with two walls covered with fine bottles of wine from ceiling to floor. Once we sat on our comfy semi-circle couches, we were entertained by a live band singing and the background. Soon we were bought a tray of three red porcelain pots which held black beans, traditional rice and farofa as a side dish to enjoy with the main course that was in store for us, plus an assorted bread basket. We were highly recommended to have the signature Brazilian drink known as ‘Caipirinha’ which was made of cachaca, lime and sugar.

108|Prima Dubai

The most amazing part of it was that a bartender roamed around pushing a trolley of different fruit jars to make this traditional drink the way we wanted it! Besides this, another impressive feature was the red and green tea coaster on every table. This served the purpose of the red side being “need not to be served food now” and green giving the signal ‘go’ to be served.

I was surprised to see such a crowd on a weekday, but then I realized how they attract so many people every day. It’s because of what they have to offer. So it’s a buffet system but not like any other ordinary buffet. They have a really great salad bar with lots of variety as well as a bread table with an assortment of breads to choose from. Now this is where the meatiness comes to play. They serve 14 different cuts of meat which also includes turkey and lamb! I felt like I visited a Heaven of Meat! The waiters went from table to table holding long skewers of meat and slicing them for the guests! You can tell them your preference for rare, medium or well-done. How amazing is that? The varieties were endless - beef short ribs, lamb leg, fillet mignon with parmesan cheese, prime ribs, turkey breast wrapped in bacon, tri-tip steak, rump steak and lamb chops. Oh, it doesn’t end. My favorites were the rump steak which is the signature meat of Brazil and the lamb leg. Although we were so full of all the juicy meat, we somehow managed to keep a little space for deserts. There’s nothing like ending a scrumptious meal with a plate of desert. I have to mention the brilliant grilled pineapple with cinnamon coating – I had 4 servings (guilty). I went for a bit of everything from scoops of chocolate, vanilla and coconut ice-cream to fruit tarts, rich chocolate truffle, caramel banana tart, fruits and passion fruit mousse.

A great end to a fabulous meal. By Prerana Sonawane

ccording to the International Private Capital Survey 2013/14, Dubai is the second most attractive real estate investment market in the world for high net-worth individuals. With the status of being a safe haven, a high yielding residential property and capital value growth have largely contributed to the sharp rise in the importance of Dubai on the world map. The perplexed and intricate infrastructure of Dubai is famous around the globe. Millions of passengers travel to or through Dubai smoothly and easily as it is the centre point or hub of all international flights. Dubai Airport is the world’s fastest growing airports and the second busiest airport in the world. Being an ultra-modern emirate, Dubai believes in creating an international market. Hence, it allows foreigners ownership at the best possible deals. The Free Trade Zones in Dubai allow business tycoons and industrialists a tax-free space, readymade offices, factories, warehouses and easy start-up and licensing procedures. Dubai thinks of its people first and for their comfort the Dubai Metro was launched in 2001. It is continuously being extended to all parts of the city, connecting people to all shopping centers, airports and tourist hotspots.

Dubai Metro is the world’s first fully automated driverless rail system. Dubai is not just dealing in oil trade but various other industries are on the road to huge success due to the flourishing international trade of non-oil products such as gold and precious metals, energy, tea, pearls, diamonds, coloured stones and fashion jewellery. Dubai has proved itself as a highly diversified international business center of global significance. Dubai is a tax-free country. There are no personal income tax, capital gains tax or withholding tax in Dubai. It is a place where people enjoy high tax-free salaries allowing them to afford high rent houses and a top notch standard of living. However all companies are required to pay tax on their revenues if they’re located in a non-free zone area. Only oil producing companies and foreign banks are required to pay a corporate tax. When compared to the international market, the high standard properties in Dubai are comparatively cheaper but they promise high rental value.

“A True representation of Dubai’s far sightedness, commitment and love for country.” The UAE believes in uniting different nations and accepting them. Thus, Dubai has a diverse and young talented workforce that is set on the road to success and bring laurels to the country. One such young Emirati lady is Fatima Al Zaabi. Who doesn’t know her? At just 31 she renovated Microsoft Power Point and introduced features to create architectural designs for homes. To acknowledge her tremendous efforts, Barack Obama invited her to the White House. She was also approached by Google to sell her product. Though Fatima has just completed her diploma in high school she has a precision for technology and loves to fix broken electronic gadgets. When she found difficulties in using Auto Cad in University, she dropped the course and was adamant to find an alternate so that everyone could design their ideal homes. With no former experience or degree in software engineering, this independent young lady self-taught herself on everything she needed to know about computer programs and technology. Being a self-motivated Emirati, she served six years to install new options on the tool bar, and to come up with ways to change the regular elements of Power Point so that users can draw their own shadows and dimensions, and give it a 3D effect with her determination and commitment towards her work. After publishing the first edition of her book which completely discusses how PowerPoint has been renovated and how it has been merged with new tools, she visited the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with their encouragement she took her work further. In no time she was awarded Certificate of Appreciation from Microsoft and was contacted by Google and the White House since they were interested in buying her program. Now Fatima is working at the Royal Group launched by Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In her free time she loves writing nasheed and working for Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood affairs where she inspires and motivates young women to set up their own business.
