Currently, the ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Vice President and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. H.H Sheikh Mohammed wishes to fulfill his father’s vision of Dubai, which is to make Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, which so far has been successful, as Dubai is internationally recognized for its tourism, trade and logistics between the East and the West.

hinking about a holiday in the UAE, or maybe considering the possibilities of employment here? There are a few things you need to know before you come and while you are here. Dubai is a fabulous city with some of the most genuine, hospitable and courteous people you are likely to meet. But this is not the US or Europe, this is the UAE steeped in centuries of tradition and devout religious following. One of the reasons I’m sure you are looking to travel to the UAE is to experience the deep and rich history and traditions on offer. But like many other countries they have their own ways of doing things which need to be respected. You may have considered putting off or cancelling a visit to Dubai or other cities in the UAE because of the atrocious stories you may have heard about in the press. So let us as to give you THE FACTS.. Most of the stories you hear are just rumours, others are based on facts but written with a twisted perspective. Let us ask you this.... What would happen in your country if someone was bringing in drugs or driving whilst heavily under the influence of alcohol? Well its not different in UAE, you will be arrested and possibly face imprisonment. If you openly disobey the laws of ANY country you have to face the consequences. Always remember that you are in a different country with a different cultural and belief system. Its like the old saying “When in Rome” - it is just common courtesy to respect your hosts as we expect visitors in our country to respect our laws and traditions.
To ensure that your stay is memorable, for all the right reasons, keep in mind that you are no longer in your own country. Respect the laws and values of the country and your stay should be an extremely enjoyable one!
Traditions: UAE is built on generations of Islamic traditions which are rooted firmly in its culture and tribal heritage. These traditions have been passed down from generation to generation and form the very cornerstone of every day life for an Emirati family. The Emiratis are friendly people who show tolerance and an open minded approach to visitors in their country; but their culture and values should always be respected.

Expat Community: In the last 30 years, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the other Emirates have gone through a total transformation from small Arab trading ports into modern cities. Over 150 nationalities (including an estimated 100,000 British expats) contribute to the UAE’s modern society. The streets, shopping malls and business areas are alive with numerous languages and cultures. Do keep in mind that you will probably meet many people with different values and opinions.
Social Ethics: The culture and laws in the UAE are designed to ensure that everyone is respectful of each other regardless of their faith and nationality. Visitors and residents alike should avoid types of improper conduct and behaviour which can otherwise lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation.
Dress code: Emiratis dress conservatively in the traditional dress and can be offended when people dress inappropriately or not in accordance with Islamic values. In public places such as shopping malls, restaurants and parks, you are encouraged to dress appropriately. Clothing should not be transparent, indecently expose parts of the body or display offensive pictures or slogans. Be careful if you are tattooed with what could be deemed offensive images or slogans, if in doubt cover up. Be aware that if you enter one of these areas dressed inappropriately you may be asked to leave (most of the larger shopping malls display signs warning respectable clothing should be worn). Any form of nudity is strictly forbidden, including topless sunbathing. Swimwear should not be worn in any other area except the beach, water parks, or swimming pools. It is preferable for both men and women to have their shoulders and knees covered and for women not to wear decollete attire when not on the beach or at a hotel. It is not appropriate for men to walk along the street bare-chested.

Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is allowed only for Non-Muslims in licensed restaurants, bars, clubs, private venues, and at home (for residents who have acquired an alcohol licence). It is against the law to drink alcohol while walking in the street or to be drunk in a public place. For those living in the UAE, a special licence must be obtained before purchasing alcohol from the exclusive and specialised licensed stores. This licence is only a permit for buying alcohol. It does not give any immunity for alcohol related criminal offences. It is an offence to carry alcohol in your car if you do not hold the special alcohol licence. If you come to the attention of the police you may be arrested, even though you may have purchased the alcohol legally. You need to be 21 or over in order to drink alcohol legally in the UAE (18 in Abu Dhabi). Alcohol is not available in Sharjah.
Drugs: Drugs are strictly forbidden, even a residual amount. Consuming or carrying drugs, even if you are transiting through the airport from one country to another, can result in a standard 4 year imprisonment and deportation. Buying or selling narcotics is considered a serious crime which can result in life-imprisonment. Some medicines (accepted in other countries) containing psychotropic substances are also forbidden, so check out the UAE relevant embassy website for further information.
Driving: The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy towards drinking and driving. You can be charged and imprisoned if you are caught with even the smallest amount of alcohol in your system; whether you are going to drink walk, get a cab or use the metro. Tailgating, speeding, racing, lane jumping and using a mobile phone while driving are all against the law. There are numerous speed cameras on the roads and motorways. Fines in the UAE are heavy. If you are caught you may also face the possibility of having your car impounded. Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory. Jay walking is also illegal and the police, particularly in Abu Dhabi, have launched a campaign against jay walking. If you are caught committing this offence you could be subject to a fine.

Over the counter or doctor prescribed medications: If you are using doctor prescribed drugs it is advisable to carry a doctor’s note. If you are bringing prescription drugs into the UAE you may need to seek prior agreement from the authorities. You should check with the nearest UAE embassy or consulate before you travel.
Respect for religion: Islamic religious values are greatly respected in the UAE. Showing any disrespect towards religious beliefs or practices is considered deeply offensive and very likely to result in a heavy fine and/or imprisonment. Other religions are respected and can be followed by the expatriate community. Follow a few simple rules of respect: Muslims pray five times a day. You will notice that the Mosques call people to pray through a speaker system. At this time you will also notice public music is turned off as Muslims perform their daily prayers. Be aware that drivers who are not close to a Mosque, may stop at a convenient lay-by to pray privately.
Alcohol can be purchased at licensed bars and restaurants from sunset onwards and most activities such as golf clubs, shopping malls, attractions and spas are open as usual but with altered opening times. Most venues that would normally have live music will not during Ramadan except oud (arabic guitar). The city really comes alive at night when visitors can join the Muslim population to break their fast (Iftar) and flock with friends and family to large tents to feast on a mouth-watering array of local dishes, smoke traditional shisha pipes and listen to traditional music. One point to note is that visitors should wear respectful clothing during this time - take a look at the ‘Know Before You Go’ guide for more information on this.
Ramadan: MANY OTHER GUIDES WILL TELL YOU NOT TO VISIT THE UAE DURING RAMADAN - WE SAY PROVIDED YOU ARE WILLING TO FOLLOW A FEW BASIC RULES, WE SAY ‘DO’ AS ITS A WONDERFUL TIME TO VISIT AND OBSERVE THE LOCAL CULTURE. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Throughout this month eating, drinking, smoking, playing loud music and dancing in public places during daylight hours are strictly forbidden and punishable by law, including for non-Muslims. This consumption ban will include general public indoor areas as well, although many of the larger hotels will have special screened off areas for non-Muslims to eat and drink during these hours freely with the exception of alcohol which will only be served after sundown. Pregnant women and the infants are excluded from the fast. Every evening during Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the breaking of their fast with an evening meal called Iftar. You will find many hotels and restaurants throughout the UAE who provide Iftar buffets. The golden rule is always be mindful and respectful of locals traditions and beliefs. Visiting Dubai during Ramadan gives tourists a unique and authentic holiday experience. Ramadan commemorates the time when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. While international Muslims abstain from all food, drinks, smoking and live music from dawn to dusk throughout the month, international hotels and resorts in U.A.E continue to serve meals to international visitors in screened off areas as its not permissible even for international visitors to eat & drink in public areas; this is also a common courtesy and mark of respect for the country you are a guest of.
And don’t forget Eid Al-Fitr, which is a three day festival for all that marks the end of Ramadan. Families exchange gifts, there are special public events arranged and yet more eating of delicious Arabic cuisine.

UAE is a relatively safe country from a crime perspective. Nevertheless, when you are out and about, take the necessary precautions to stay safe just as you would do if you were in your own country. If you are going to visit bars and clubs, do not accept drinks from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended. While rare, having your drink spiked in the UAE can happen. Sexual relationships outside of marriage are illegal, irrespective of any relationship you may have with your partner in your own country. Cohabiting, including in hotels, is also illegal. If you become pregnant outside of marriage, both you and your partner face the possibility of imprisonment. There are also legal ramifications when registering the birth with the local authorities.

Pornography and pornographic images, and websites are banned in the UAE. Sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public, or taking their photos without pemission, is strictly frowned upon. Holding hands for married couples is tolerated but kissing and hugging are considered offenses against public decency. Open displays of affectionare are generally not tolerated. Offensive language, spitting and aggressive behaviour (including hand gestures) are viewed very seriously and can result imprisonment and deportation. This includes “road range�. Dancing is allowed in the privacy of your home or at licensed clubs, but dancing in public is classed as indecent and provocative. Smoking is forbiden in government areas, offices and shopping malls. There are however many designated areas where smoking is allowed.

Religion In the UAE, the official religion is Islam. You will definitely notice some of the breathtaking mosques around the city, and will hear the call to prayer 5 times a day (known as the Azaan). Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosques except at Jumeirah Mosque. However, Dubai is pretty tolerant with other religions and is home to large expat communities of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and others. Dubai also houses places of worship of other religions.
Language Arabic is the official language spoken in the UAE, although everywhere around the city just about everybody speaks English, especially in places of tourism and commerce. Other commonly used languages include Hindi, Farsi and Urdu. Tourists should have no problem communicating in Dubai.
Climate & Currency One would describe Dubai’s climate as a tropical desert climate, as summer temperatures do reach up to the mid and high 40’s during the day and remain in the 30’s overnight. The winter months are much milder and cooler, with the average temperature being around 20C at daytime, and going down to even 12C-14C at night, a more comfortable climate. From December to March the cool weather in the winter occasionally witnesses some rainfall, so travel prepared! The Arab Emirati Dirham is the local currency used in Dubai. The UAE dirham ranks from 5 to 1,000 Dirham bills. The coins come in 25, 50 fils and 1 Dirham. It’s a good idea to always keep smaller bills to pay for cheaper items like metro since it may be hard to get change for 500 or 1,000 bills.
Population Dubai’s population is estimated to be approximately 2.1 million people out of which approximately 85% comprise of expat population. Expat population chiefly comprises of Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Filipinos. British expats is the largest group of Western expats in Dubai. It also has a sizeable community of Iranians.

Zabeel Park!
Soak In The Sun
The first technology theme park, Zabeel Park is the largest park in Dubai. Apart from the conventional garden park and jogging track, Zabeel Park includes interactive displays grouped into different zones- alternative energy, communication and techno, space maze and 3D theatre and edutainment center; Star gate. The recreational part of the park boasts of a 4.3 kilometre jogging track, boating lake, restaurants, an exhibition gallery, activity area, various sports pitch, barbeque facilities, shaded seating, play areas and refreshment kiosks. There is a small friendly train that visitors can ride for a tour of the park.

The platter of Arabic Sweets is filled with pieces of rich temptation. Hailing from old kingdoms in the Middle East, these recipes have mixed with the sands of time and come down the ages infused with distinct local flavors. You can indulge in this spread of deliciousness across a multitude of shops across the UAE; from malls to shops just around the street corner, it’s hard not to get your hands on these traditional pieces of heaven. There are several standalone shops in malls that sell these sweets and you can sample a taste before making your purchase. Arabic sweets are aplenty so be prepared to be spoiled for choice. Wafi Gourmet, Bateel, Albaba Sweets and Al Samadi Sweets are just some of the places where you can get your sugar fix.

Baklava is one of the most popular sweets and is hard to miss. This Greek and Middle Eastern dessert is sinfully rich with chopped nuts (pistachios, walnuts or almonds, or a mixture) between thin crispy layers of pastry. This nutty delight is then baked and finally being drenched in a syrup of honey. Other flavorings that can be added are cinnamon, cloves, rose water, cardamom, clove and orange rind.
Gaz is Iran’s gift to this incredible sweet platter. This traditional sticky white nougat from Iran is infused with rose water and pistachios or cashews that lend it a very different taste from other nougat variants. Gaz is traditionally handmade and shaped into single round pieces that are sprinkled with flour to prevent them from sticking to each other. Gaz is surprisingly hard to find in Dubai. After a lot of hunting, we managed to find our Gaz treasure trove at Choc & Nuts at Baniyas Road, Deira; it is also available at several stalls at the Iran Pavilion at Global Village held between October to April. Another must try delight is Kunafe, a Levantine vermicelli pastry filled with white cheese or cream. It is soaked in sugar and flavored with rosewater and cardamom. It has spread its sweetness across the region giving rise to as many pronunciations as there are variations of this recipe. The exact ingredients differ depending on which region it comes from. Kunafe is also the most popular Ramadan sweet as it gives the body just the right amount of sugar it needs.

Have your cake and eat it too. Basbousa is a sweet cake made of cooked semolina or farina soaked in syrup. Coconut is a common addition. The syrup may also contain orange flower water or rose water. Mamoul are cute little shortbread pastries filled with dates and dry fruits. They can be found rolled into balls or flattened cookies. If pancakes are food for your soul, then you have to try Ataif. This dessert is kind of a sweet dumpling filled with cream or nuts. These are just some of the many sweets and pastries that are definitely worth sinking your teeth into. The Good Things in Life are free! There’s plenty of good stuff to do around Dubai without burning a hole in your pocket. We bring you five things to do in the City of Gold without having to loosen any purse strings.
1. Nature Worship Sand or grass? Take your pick and head to the nearest beach or park for a refreshing escape. Dubai’s coastline has some fantastic beaches that make for the sweetest escape. Though quite a few belong to hotels, there’s plenty more shoreline for everyone to soak up the sun. Indulge in a beach game, swimming, jet skiing, a picnic or an evening walk. If the tan and sand isn’t your thing, the grass is greener on the other side in Dubai’s several parks. These beautifully landscaped pastures are havens of respite; perfect for walks, meditation and some well-deserved me-time. 2. Dhow Wow For ages, the traditional dhows bobbing along the Dubai Creek have served as vessels of trade with neighboring countries. Get a lesson in dhow making at the dhow building yard by the Dubai Creek in Jaddaf. With simple tools, boat makers are busy working their skills into the sheesham wood that these boats are made from, both big and small. 3. Culture Shock Go back in time and soak up some local culture at the Dubai Museum. Located in the Al-Fahidi fort built in 1787, it is the oldest building in Dubai. The museum was opened in 1971 as a portal to the emirate’s traditional past before the discovery of oil changed the course of the nation’s history. This place is home to local antiquities and dioramas depicting life in former times. 4. The Fountainhead of Awe A trip to The Dubai Mall is incomplete without appreciating what the Dubai Fountain has to offer. Set in the Burj Khalifa Lake at the mall’s lower ground waterfront promenade, the Dubai Fountain is a spectacular visual delight. It is the world’s largest dancing fountain. Its spray reaches heights of 500 feet and there’s 22,000 gallons of water in the air at any time during the show. The 3-5 minute show is set to wonderful music that elevates the whole experience. And it plays every 20 minutes, so no excuses for missing out on this visual masterpiece. 5. WrestleMania Get acquainted with ‘Pehlwani’ or ‘Kushti’ wrestling. This ancient sport from Southeast Asia involves bulky men knocking each other out by simply using their body weight. Kinokuniya Headquartered in Tokyo, Kinokuniya has its stores all over the world, and opened its only branch in the Middle East with a sprawling store at The Dubai Mall. For those who are not acquainted with the concept of Shisha, here’s a lowdown; dating back to over 500 years, it is basically a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water. The tobacco is heated by charcoal at the top and inhaled through a water chamber at the bottom. Cafes are amongst the chief social gathering places in the Arab region; hence most cafes here offer Shisha. Social smoking is done with a single or double hose pipe; it consists of a syrupy mix of tobacco, binding agent (molasses, honey, treacle, sugar or vegetable glycerol) and fruit flavorings. Some typical flavors include apple, mint, melon, grape and strawberry.
Smoking shisha is all about socializing with friends, where both men and woman equally take part. This is one of the most popular past times in the region. Many places offer special discounts for women, while a few others provide free shisha for women like the ‘Exit Café’ in Karama. On a health-related note: the volume of smoke inhaled in an hour-long session is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes and therefore, falls under the same deleterious category as cigarettes. However, smoking shisha in public areas such as parks and beaches is prohibited and can lead to AED 500 fine. The most popular places especially for a younger crowd are in karama next to the Lamcy Plaza Mall, where a whole lane is dedicated to a multitude of shisha cafes. While other famous places include, ‘QDs’ at Park Hyatt, ‘Reem Al Bawadi’ on Sheikh Zayed road and Jumeirah Beach road and ‘Shakespeare and Co.’ on Jumeirah Beach road are among the many cafes offering shisha in Dubai. Overview The world’s largest themed shopping mall is named after the famous Arabic Explorer Ibn Battuta. Spread over an area of 521,000 square meters, covering a distance of 1.3 kilometer from one end to the other, the mall is home to 270 retail outlets, 50 restaurants and a 21 screen theatre hall. The mall is divided into six courts named after the regions travelled by the explorer, namely, Andalusia, Tunisia, Egypt, Persia, India and China and each court is artistically decorated in the style of the respective country he visited. Discovering the mall: Not only for the shopping extravaganza but the compelling architecture of the mall based on ancient Chinese, Indian, Tunisian, Persian, Egyptian and Andalusian architecture also makes it worth the visit. Walking along the corridors of the mall, soaking in the olfactory senses with the smell of the traditional “oud” (Arabic fragrance), one virtually travels to those countries visited by Ibn Battuta! China Court: China Court is a kaleidoscope of artistic Chinese designs and styles – the roof rested on the imposing lacquered red columns are decorated with gold trimmings, floral patterns, dragons and phoenixes. At the entrance of China Court, a huge Chinese Junk – a native sailing vessel common to the Far East, greets the visitors. Ibn Battuta sailed in one of these ships to China. The court also exhibits the story of the greatest navigator of the Far East – Zheng He, the Admiral of the Chinese Fleet in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Three Sampans (flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat) are also on display which is mainly a fishing boat used in the harbors or rivers of China since ancient times.

India Court: The architecture of this court bears testimony to the Indo-Islamic style. The white marble domes and the four corner pavilions resemble the marvelous Taj Mahal. The exterior bears an unmistakably Indian feel, reminiscent of the architectural landmarks of Islamic India. The entrance pavilion is decorated with intricate floral designs similar to the entrance gate of the Taj Mahal complex. The main court area showcases the magnificent dome in polished white marble finish, decorated with carved floral patterns in the lower relief. The multi-cusped arches and patterned stone-screen windows resembles the architecture of the iconic Pearl Mosque at the Red Fort in Delhi, India. The Elephant Clock in the India Court is the most fascinating feature. The structure pays tribute to the great Muslim inventor - Al-Jazari who was a 12th century engineer with a broad knowledge of the technology of his time. The Elephant Clock works on the principals of water-related mechanics and is an exact re-creation, based on the drawings of Al-Jazari. Every hour, wooden carved figures, dragons and phoenixes all come alive and move together in a synchronized fashion portraying a technological marvel of the medieval world, brought back to life after 800 years! Persia Court: The corridors of this court strongly resemble the vaulted streets of a bazaar in the heart of Baghdad, a classic defining feature of an Islamic town. The use of cross-vaulted ceilings separated by glazed brick arches, huge arched wooden windows providing natural lighting, colorful mosaics made from glazed tiles with abstract and arabesque designs on the wall spaces creates a perfect Persian ambience. The brass lanterns are typical of the ones found in madrasas (religious buildings) and mosques of Iran and Iraq.

Pd | Lifestyle Turquoise and dark blue glazed tiles have been used all over the Persia Court in keeping with the Persian tradition. Ornamental panels based on the octagon, hexagon and star can be found above and within the arches throughout the Court.
Natural light enters through arched screen-widows, each with an intricate interlaced design. The gigantic brass chandelier hanging in the center reflecting the octagons and geometric patterns of the surrounding court creates a magical effect when lit.
The Court is adorned by a magnificent Dome hand-painted by a small group of artists making it look like a Persian carpet comparable in design with the dome in the Shaykh Lutfallah Mosque in Isfahan.
The turquoise dome adoring the skyline is similar to so many Persian Mosques and palaces seen all over Iraq and Iran.
Egypt Court: The design at the court was based on the Islamic architecture of the Mamluk period in Egypt. The highlights here are the large arcade with pointed arches, stucco plastered finish, and a heavy woodframed ceiling. The two medallions that adorn the central arch leading to the minor court are borrowed from oblong “widows” of light latticed mashrabiya work, break up the façade which is a common feature in Mamluk- Egypt and the courtyard façade of the AlAzhar Mosque in Cairo.
Conical wall scones and spectacular brass lanterns light up the court creating a true bazaar-like ambience.

“Papyrus”-columns covers the walls on either side of the exterior. The sandstone walls are adorned with carved hieroglyphics similar to ancient ruins found along the Nile River. A massive sandstone gate greets the visitors at the entrance decorated with scenes of Pharaohs and Gods from Egyptian mythology, all carved in relief.
Colorful painted frescoes depicting scenes of ancient Egyptian royalty, adorns the interior of the Minor Court. Painted hieroglyphics decorates the “Papyrus� columns and the wall space above the tenant line resembling the interiors of ancient Egyptian temples. The color scheme was chosen based on paintings found in Egyptian tombs.
Tunisia Court: The whitewashed stucco building with blue painted doors and windows recreates the narrow streets and souks of a typical African marketplace with a village-like environment based on the coastal towns of Tunisia.
Tunisia Court: The streetlamps and lanterns hanging from walls supported by decorative brackets of Tunisian design add to the authenticity. Tunisian stained glass windows add color, life and aesthetics to the buildings. The minarets from Tunis reaches right up to the blue sky-like ceiling.
The gateways in front bear resemblance to Moroccan and Tunisian gateways to Royal Palaces or market places while the central gate in front is decorated with arabesque patterns similar to those used in numerous Moroccan mosques.
The architecture in the food court in Tunisia Court drew inspiration from the fortress at Monastir and Sousse.
Huge terracotta vases, symbolizing African trade add an impressive finishing touch. The beautiful brass lanterns hanging from the ceiling adds to the distinct Moroccan flavor.

Andalusia Court: The design inspiration comes from the Great Mosque of Cordoba and Alhambra palace in Granada. The lofty halls, accentuated with rows of arches, create a sense of elevated space. A characteristic feature of Andalusian architecture is the “Horseshoe-arches” with alternating red brick and white stones. These can be found all along the wall-spaces of the court. The Centre piece of Andalusia Court is the Lion Headed Fountain inspired by the Fountain of Lions in Alhambra. This magnificent structure, with its eight lion statues, is surrounded by lofty marble columns. Located at the police headquarters near Al Mulla Plaza, the Dubai Police Museum was built on November 19, 1987 featuring the history, conventional forces and weapons of Dubai. Dubai Police Museum hosts the largest and heaviest computer in the world that was imported when the museum was established. And recently it has been announced that the museum will be shaped to look like the largest police cap in the world, and it will enter the Guinness world book of records! The museum showcases the antique weapons and tools that were used in the police station in the past. For a sheer comparison between the old and new, they have displayed the modern, state of the art artilleries and devices in the museum as well; it’s quite impressive how technology has evolved over the years. They have also preserved the old and new military uniforms, medals, brochures and communication devices. One striking feature in the museum is the captivating display of different methods used by the Dubai police to fight against crime and eliminate illegal activities such as drugs dealings. To train the criminals and motivate them towards a respectable crime-free life, various educational workshops were organized by the Dubai police and prisoners were taught several crafts such as boat and sculpture making. The police museum boasts of its past and is gratified of its heritage and proudly shares their culture with the world. It also displays the portrait of Mohammed Saeed Bouhemid- the first policeman in Dubai as well as the first police logo created by Peter Clayton, the first circular issued 42 years back and the first Dubai law book published in 1966. The walls are covered with the history of the Dubai Police and exhibit the events, royal decrees and resolutions from the past. These pictures of various events mark the achievements and loyalty of the Dubai Police towards their country. They also show the graduation ceremonies, where the graduates were honored with badges and emblems. Al Majlis Gallery has a very interesting past and is the result of a beautiful love affair between an expatriate lady and her love at first sight- a traditional Arabic house. Alison Collin moved to Dubai in 1976 and fell in love with the architecture of traditional Arabic souks and the cultural atmosphere. Her house was an informal meeting place for professional and amateur artists to indulge in their combined interest – the artistic love for UAE. The great vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and the industriousness of Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) teamed together to build the ‘Floating Bridge’ that was pompously inaugurated on 16th July 2007. As the name suggests, this bridge literally floats inches above the water. The floating bridge connects two of the busiest creeks in Dubai; the Bur Dubai Creek and the Deira Creek. Approximately 155 million dirhams were invested in the construction of this bridge. The bridge has the capacity to carry up-to 6000 vehicles every hour which strategically eases traffic during the rush hours.

The Floating Bridge is an integral part of the Dubai roads and networking. Over time, authorities have added more lanes to the previous crossing to further assist traffic management, which has helped immensely. This one of a kind project is built out of 20 meters wide hollow concrete blocks that float on water. The rolling section of the bridge allows the bridge to open and close at specific intervals regulated by the authorities. The bridge is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm. When the bridge is closed at specific intervals it allows the ferries and boats to pass through. Driving inches above the water level can only be experienced on the floating bridge!

The Largest Sand Painting The largest picture ever painted of the late Sheikh Zayed was created in Dubai on the 12th of May, 2014. And here’s the catch; it’s completely made out of SAND! Sylvain Tremblay; renowned artist and lecturer in Canadian University of Dubai created the 12m x 10m picture in the early hours of the morning. However, you have to applaud his dedication, as the winds tried to hamper his creation, he decided to continue his performance from a hot air balloon and it did not affect the stunning results. “I feel honored to have been able to do this and I am delighted with the result,” he said. “The wind made it tough and I had to finish a lot quicker than expected, but I had so many supporters and students and they helped me finish it.” The public’s first opportunity to see the artwork was around 20th May 2014 at Liwa’s Art Hub. The Hub sits at the base of an 80m high sand dune on which the picture is displayed. Take a break from the big city life and venture into the wild at the Arabian Wildlife Park. Located at Abu Dhabi’s stunning Sir Bani Yas Island, this park rambles across 4200 hectares making it Arabia's largest wildlife reserve.
The Arabian Wildlife Park was actually borne out of a four-step program to preserve the island’s indigenous fauna. Sir Bani Yas Island recognized its potential to preserve its wildlife and launched its first breeding programs in 1971 which were exceptionally successful. With the Arabian Oryx declared extinct in the early 1960s, the island focused its breeding program on this species. Their efforts resulted in over 500 Arabian Oryx born on the island and released into the wild, making Sir Bani Yas Island world renowned and appreciated for playing an integral role in rehabilitating this once lost species.
Thanks to the decades of intensive conservation, the island is now home to a plethora of plant and animal life. In 2008, the island joined hands with the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency to launch a fourstep program to fulfill Sheikh Zayed’s vision for this island that was once his retreat. The Arabian Wildlife Park is a product of a one-of-a-kind program. Occupying nearly the entire island and surrounded by a 32-kilometre boundary fence, this park certainly is a wildlife haven. 74 | Prima Dubai
Over a thousand animals indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula now freely roam this verdant playground. These include cheetahs, striped hyenas, barbary sheep, Northern ostriches, Ethiopian hedgehogs, the Arabian mountain and sand or goitered gazelle, Arabian hares and the endangered Arabian Oryx.
The Arabian Wildlife Park continues to further its conservation cause even today. It monitors breeding programs and actively participates in international conservation breeding activities for endangered species. Non-indigenous animals including the Blackbuck, Emu, Eland, Gemsbok and others have been relocated. To make its resident animals feel as much as home as possible, all remnants of past human activity have been done away with, such as roads, old fences, signs and irrigation pipes that were laid down years ago to vegetate the island. Instead, new water holes and grass pastures serve as re-vegetation tools.

As I looked around the restaurant, I couldn’t help but notice the view outside with the skyline of the Palm Jumeirah Islands, making it a perfect place for a romantic dinner. We were recommended a few signature dishes; we chose to share the signature starter dish, the Ceviche, which has a variety of seafood with impeccable flavors that complimented every type of fish laid on the platter. While we waited for the main course to arrive, we were offered complimentary snacks. While we munched on those; the Latin music in the background complimented the atmosphere perfectly. For the main course, we choose the Pan seared Chicken Breast with roasted bell pepper and goat cheese where the chicken was grilled to perfection – soft and tender, while the Churrasco, was impeccable, I was amazed with the way they served the Churrasco; they serve each meat to you separately according to your taste preference (rare, medium-rare or well-done), there are varieties of meat and each of them had a unique taste with sauces that complimented the meaty flavors.

A Place to Savor the Flavor The Pachanga restaurant, a hidden jewel of the Latinos located at Hilton Jumeirah Beach Resort is popular for their signature dishes, drinks and themed nights. As my friend and I entered the restaurant, I could feel the friendly vibe, the dĂŠcor; very elegant yet cozy, the stillness and tranquility of the place was overpowering. We were escorted to our table and offered refreshments; the hospitality was truly wondrous.

Meanwhile, our servers’ hospitality was notable, he also recommended the molten chocolate cake for our dessert, and I was surprised with the taste, it was sweet and chocolaty with its flavor perfect for my taste buds, it was my guilty pleasure. At the end of our meal, we decided to order drinks, a Margarita and a Mojito; the famous Latin drinks, both the cocktails were a refreshing summer twist. Mojito is the signature drink of Pachanga, was the perfect choice to end our fabulous dinner. As we were leaving the restaurant, we were given a warm goodbye. As mentioned earlier, Pachanga offers Latin and Salsa nights on Thursdays and Fridays, Churrasco night on Tuesdays, Latin Brunch on Saturdays and Dinner Special Menus which are created by their talented chefs. This ‘cagey’ club has created a standard of debonair and luxury with minimalistic décor, with its wooden floors, plush black leather sofas, advanced lighting systems, and, a striking LED dance floor with raised platforms as well as a VIP lounge - creating an extravagant yet cryptic ambiance. Its dark interiors and cages with seating arranged inside, smoky haze and strobe lights create an over-powerful aura but in a good seductive way. The club is called Mansion, but if you are visualizing a manor of sorts; you’re in for a surprise.

I have to mention, it’s difficult to find the new Melia Hotel, and you would probably go in circles before you reach your destination, but if your ride is a cab, then it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Mansion’s exclusivity can be proved by looking at its opening hours - just open two nights a week, less than the high end clubs such as Cirque du Soir, which is open three nights a week, yet this club allures a more-than-healthy high-end crowd every weekend. So get ready to party the VIP style with Mansion!

As I stepped in, a peaceful placidness engulfed me even before I could pick which massage I would treat my body to. Before I could enter my spa room, I was asked to choose between four, 100%, single distilled essential oils each with a different purpose; Lavender oil for pure relaxation, Rose oil for good blood circulation, lemon grass for muscle pain reliever and cinnamon oil for muscle treatment. I went with the rose oil and was surprised when I entered the spa room; it included a bath tub, shower, a bed full of rose petals, towels and a pair of comfy slippers. I was impressed as the room was meticulous to suit your every desire. As I eagerly waited for the massage to begin, the soothing acoustic sounds at the background with the beautiful aromatic fragrances transported me into a state of contentment and bliss. This massage was the perfect choice to relinquish any tension and stress in my body. It combines long strokes, skin rolling, palm and thumb pressure techniques as well as a head massage for a rejuvenating experience. Once the wonderful massage came to a sad end, I wished I could turn back in time and start all over again. Maven Spa will unequivocally transform the way to feel in your body and soul with their meditative ambience, soothing tunes and professional masseuses giving your body the attention it requires.

A Magnetic Place Teatro, known for its immense popularity among the residents of Dubai, is one place where you have to book way in advance. Although commodious, it’s always packed; whether on a weekday or weekend. Located at the Towers Rotana Hotel on Sheikh Zayed road, Teatros is a floor up where the lift doors open directly to this impeccable restaurant.
As we entered, we were first escorted to the bar area while we waited for our host to arrive. Meanwhile, I ordered the ‘Teatro signature mojito’; superbly bracing with the mix of passion fruit and watermelon while my friend went with the ‘Golden Mojito’; distinctive flavor with a bit of spice – enchanting. Soon after our host for the evening, Mr. Dinesh Putte arrived, and while we got chatting, we tried some more drinks suggested by Dinesh. The ‘Woodford Old fashion’; pretty strong and is inspired by the old fashioned lifestyle, while I took something much mellow like the ‘Lychee Martini’; fresh lychee richness, definitely could not have had enough of that. Besides the deliciously concocted cocktails, I absolutely loved the décor; the red perfectly complimenting the dark wooden décor while pictures of celebrities in black and white covered the walls, giving the place a retro theme and the most creative aspect was the three huge piles of corks in massive steel bowls of every bottle ever opened hanging from the ceiling right in front of their impressive wine cellar. Oh and how can I forget the wood-burning oven in their open plan kitchen, let escape those enticing aromas to spark your imagination. 108 | Prima Dubai
While I was busy admiring the décor, the appetizers arrived. We went with the ‘Wasabi Tempura’; batter fried prawns with a spicy wasabi sauce – so light and crispy, truly delectable. And the ‘Sushi Platter’; a mix of prawn sushi, veggies and an avocado, caviar and prawn sushi wrapped together – a brilliant commixture.
After some more on-going conversations, It was time for the main course, I can clearly recall the beautiful ‘Mosi Sea bass’; this is their most popular dish and rightfully so. The juicy tenderness of the fish with a crispy coating on top was just flawless and the potatoes proved to be the perfect side dish. It’s by far the best sea bass I have tasted. Kudos Teatro! And the ‘Lobster Linguini’; soft juicy pieces of lobster with the flavorsome linguini was nectarous. And for the amazing finale, we shared a ‘Teatro Platter’; a variety of heavenly desserts on one plate – the smooth raspberry sorbet, the fruity banana spring roll, the zingy lemon tart, the sinful chocolate soufflé and the berrylicious blueberry Brule – I had entered a dessert paradise. But it wasn’t over yet, the signature teatro dessert; the mind-blowing ‘Chocolate Sizzling Brownie’ had arrived. Its sizzling sound and all its chocolaty goodness gave me goose bumps; I had reached a new level of ecstasy. Teatro has found its place in my top 10 list of great food, hospitality and a beguiling ambience for a date night or just a dinner with family or friends at an exorbitant rate.

As my colleague and I sat down at our touch screen table, we were instantly engulfed into exploring the incredible options. You can not only check out their menu, but also place or cancel the order from the table, view the chef prepare your meal on the ‘chef-cam’, check out the news, weather or browse through Facebook while you wait for your meal, children can watch videos specially tailored for them, you can send messages across tables if you are in a larger group through ‘Social Room’ or even call the waiter, ask for cutlery, your bill and call a taxi! The details are quite exceptional. However, it got annoying to scroll through the options after a few minutes, as it turned out the screen wasn’t sensitive enough, we kept ordering other dishes and going to different options without intending to. Besides their touch screen tables, even their décor is out of the ordinary, a bold choice of green, black and white gives this place a casual and eccentric feel.

Although it’s a touch screen, you have to glide your finger an inch above the screen over the variety of options. We settled for some traditional dishes to take us through the culinary journey of the African-Mediterranean cuisine.
We began this journey with the Ebony Churba; a rich flavorsome soup with pieces of lamb, celery, a bit of pasta and carrots infused together giving off an aromatic smell. It was a beautiful concoction especially for the meat lovers. For the main course, we went with the Ebony Cordon Bleu; when it first arrived, I initially thought it was garlic bread with cheese but it was actually breaded chicken breast stuffed with eggplant and mozzarella cheese served with mustard sauce, veggies and potato wedges – delicious. The Rijla; a traditional African dish of baby spinach with beef cubes and other spices was superb, a very homely meal. If a Sudanese national came to Dubai, this is the place he would go to eat a good home cooked meal. We couldn’t resist the Lamb chops; very well presented with huge pieces of lamb chops marinated in their special spices with their Sudanese hot sauce and garlic dip on the side. I loved this dish, it was grilled to perfection and the hot sauce was a brilliant combination. While we dug into the scrumptious food, I had the Karkade Juice; a tasty traditional tamarind drink to gulp down the food. To end this experiment of spices on our taste buds, we had a traditional dessert from Sudan – the Dates Porridge, made from pureed dates served with sweet crispy walnuts. It wasn’t a spectacular ending to the dinner, but nonetheless pretty successful.
After we were done with the filling meal, the waitress brought us these two white cubes with warm water, I was confused, but it all became clear soon. She dipped each cube in the water and it rose up to be a wet towel (Magic), a good trick to amaze the little ones. Ebony has captured the essence of traditional food with a twist of modern technology; it has conquered its goal of being an outstanding place and the first of its kind in the Middle East. Indulge in their stylishly prepared British inspired food and drinks while you party the night away.
Oscar Vine society As the same suggests, this bar is all about the wine. The décor is made up of wine cellars and tables decked out like barrels of port – pretty impressive. The drinks menu lists 40 wines by glass and over 100 by the bottle. Every Tuesday, enjoy the all-you-can-eat cheese buffet for AED 99, a perfect combination for a glass of red wine. This bar will demand your attention, with its gentleman theme, masculine tones and simplistic décor. With a brilliant concept and setting, this bar does not fail to impress and the prices are predictably high, which is hardly a surprise – with its intricate detailing to every aspect of the bar, you can’t expect anything less.
Barasti Barasti is one of those few places that have it all. Whether you want to relax on the beach with a fruity cocktail, or sit indoors and dig into some delicious food, or just relax after work with some friends on their comfy sofas laid outdoors next to the beach – Barasti is the place to go! Caramel The first thing that comes to mind with a name like ‘caramel’ is a sugar-shack, but it’s far from that. Caramel, located in DIFC is a sophisticated, low-lit lounge and restaurant. They offer great chic dishes for an appetizing meal. It’s more of a grown up place than people in their early 20s to hang out. It’s somewhere you can meet up with co-workers to share a bite or have a drink. It provides a refreshing low-key atmosphere than all the other bars around Dubai.
Stables Stables as the name suggests boasts of a vague equine theme. With barrels for tables, high ceilings and a familiar menu of bbq chicken wings and fish ‘n’ chips, makes this bar a kick back place to enjoy a pint of beer while you cheer on your favorite football team on an enormous projector screen. Although it sounds like one of those casual sports pubs, it’s far grander in style. And they also have a good ratio of men and women, which is unlikely in most sports bars.

Two other districts, Lake District and Forbidden City are currently on hold owing to the plaguing recession problems. Except for the towering CBD buildings, every cluster adheres to their respective design and height specifications which lend a sense of uniformity and openness. There are several sports facilities that make for a perfect game after a long day. Residents make the most of their evening walks in the parks and well maintained green spaces. Located in the Al Warsan region on the Al Ain Hatta Road, International City is quite far from downtown.
However this distance doesn’t pose a serious problem to residents who have everything they need within convenient reach. Several factors contribute to the renewed interest in property investment. The recent rent hike has led many to reconsider their options. Buying is known to yield higher returns than renting. Those who rent property pay eight per cent of its value for an asset that they do not own. On the other hand, buyers and investors end up paying less for an asset that they own and that simultaneously keeps appreciating. In addition, rent income from property is a stable source. Though susceptible to fluctuations, its complete dissolution as a source of income is near impossible.

Is Dubai a safe haven for property investment? Property as an investment is now looking more lucrative for anyone and everyone from every part of the world being invited to invest in Dubai. The Dubai property market is once again looking up after the 2008 global financial crisis saw it plumb to the depths of debt. After a robust recovery in 2012, Dubai has emerged as one of the strongest property markets offering a favorable investor climate. Moreover, Dubai’s successful bid for Expo 2020 will further attract investors to the real estate sector. It is important to remember that the property slump in 2008 was the first of its kind and the result of a global economic pandemic. Dubai’s property market is now rooted in defined fundamentals instead of yesterday’s speculation.
Real estate makes for excellent collateral security against loans and allows debt finance to be secured at the best rates. The residual value of real estate is constant; it may rise and fall but never touches zero. Prices of apartments and villas are dependent on their location. A minimum investment of AED 100,000 is required for both which extends into millions. Banks are once again lending loans that are cheaper than those in 2008, with attractive interest rates. They are currently offering mortgages at rates of 5-6 percent per annum. The Central Bank has now capped loans for expats at 75 per cent and 80 per cent for Emiratis.
This means the maximum mortgage loan that an expat will now get is 75 per cent loan to value. Buyers can also take advantage of cheaper prices offered by developers, who offer down payment plans that enable easy installment payments For those interested in purchasing property, it is advisable to first decide on the amount of money you are willing to spend and then compare it to the property value you seek. A mortgage broker can help ascertain these figures and values. A key point to consider is the location of the property; it plays a crucial role in the appreciation value.
Always read the fine print and get a lawyer well versed with the laws of the land to guide you. Property investment is a lot to consider but can be very rewarding if your plan is well designed. Financial downturns are unpredictable so ensure the investments you make are secure enough to withstand the vagaries of the global economic climate.

New UAE federal ruling on EU visa requirements will further enhance Dubai’s popularity with European tourists - Citizens of all EU member states exempt from pre-entry visas
Dubai, UAE; March 5th 2014: A new ruling by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs exempting citizens of 13 European member states from requiring a pre-entry visa to the UAE, will further enhance Dubai’s popularity with European tourists. With citizens of the other 15 European member states already being exempt, the announcement means that all citizens of the European Union holding an ordinary passport will be allowed to enter the UAE without having to previously apply for a visa. The ruling comes into effect from 22nd March 2014. Speaking in Berlin on the sidelines of ITB 2014, the world’s largest tourism trade fair, His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) said: “This is a very positive announcement from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and one which will have a significant impact on the attractiveness of Dubai as a destination for tourists from the 13 countries included today in the exemption. European countries have traditionally featured prominently in our top 20 source markets for visitors and the lifting of visa restrictions provides for easier travel arrangements from across the continent. “The news has been received extremely positively here at ITB, both by our partners from the Dubai tourism industry and from the European travel industry. Through our network of offices across Europe we will use ruling to further promote Dubai’s attractiveness as a destination for both leisure and business.” The 13 countries that come under the new exemption are: Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. Dubai’s top visitor source markets in 2013 included five European Union countries, each of which were already exempt from requiring pre-arrival visas: the UK (ranked 3rd), Germany (ranked 7th), France (ranked 14th), Italy (ranked 17th) and the Netherlands (ranked 20th). His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri continued: “As we work towards our target of welcoming 20 million visitors per year by 2020, DTCM will continue to work with partners in the government and the private sector to ensure that Dubai’s destination offering is continually enhanced. This includes infrastructural developments and the provision of more hotels, attractions, events and experiences, but also includes leveraging our geographic location and the connectivity provided by our world leading aviation infrastructure by easing access to the Emirate.”

Cultural Village The Culture Village project aims at mixing old-world pleasures and entertainment with a modern touch. Dubai Opera House Set to open in 2015, the Dubai Opera House will be the centerpiece of Emaar’s new 500-acre cultural district near the iconic Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai. It will be built in an efficient manner with the use of hydraulic technology, which will be able to remove 900 of the 2000 seats that the Opera House can accommodate. The 900 seats can be stored in massive garages beneath the theatre until they are required. The Dubai Opera House will be shaped like a traditional sailing vessel.

One Park Avenue One of the towers located at the Jumeirah Garden City is the One Park Avenue. Its structure is in the form of a fluid shape which celebrates Dubai’s historic relationship to water. The rippling ‘steel ribbons’ visually express the tower’s cohesive structure and energy systems. It will be nearly 600 meters high, with an area of 350,000 square meters. Instead of consuming energy, the one Park Avenue tower will contribute energy to the city. It can save energy by 40 to 60%.
Park Gate The Park gate will comprise of six paired towers including the one Park Avenue. It will be 30 to 40 storeys high located at the Jumeirah Gardens City. It will be covered in a solar-powered canopy with hanging gardens and reflecting pools below which will act as thermal sinks. It will be surrounded by residential blocks, duplexes, penthouses, villas and commercial buildings. The park gate will serve as a place to rest, socialize and do business in the heart of Dubai.
