Currently, the ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Vice President and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. H.H Sheikh Mohammed wishes to fulfill his father’s vision of Dubai, which is to make Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, which so far has been successful, as Dubai is internationally recognized for its tourism, trade and logistics between the East and the West.
I
n the year 1833, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti moved the tribal Baniyas family to Dubai. This led to Sheikh Maktoum becoming the founder of the ruling Maktoum family, which currently are the royal and ruling family of the emirate.

Must Know Before You Go
By Darya Tajallipour Religion In the UAE, the official religion is Islam. You will definitely notice some of the breathtaking mosques around the city, and will hear the call to prayer 5 times a day (known as the Azaan). Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosques except at Jumeirah Mosque. However, Dubai is pretty tolerant with other religions and is home to large expat communities of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and others. Dubai also houses places of worship of other religions.
Language Arabic is the official language spoken in the UAE, although everywhere around the city just about everybody speaks English, especially in places of tourism and commerce. Other commonly used languages include Hindi, Farsi and Urdu. Tourists and non-Arabic speakers should have no problem communicating in Dubai.
Climate & Currency One would describe Dubai’s climate as a tropical desert climate, as summer temperatures do reach up to the mid and high 40’s during the day and remain in the 30’s overnight. The winter months are much milder and cooler, with the average temperature being around 20C at daytime, and going down to even 12C-14C at night, a more comfortable climate. From December to March the cool weather in the winter occasionally witnesses some rainfall, so travel prepared! The Arab Emirati Dirham is the local currency used in Dubai. The UAE dirham ranks from 5 to 1,000 Dirham bills. The coins come in 25,50 fils and 1 Dirham. It’s a good idea to always keep with you smaller bills to pay for cheaper items like metro since it may be hard to get change for 500 or 1,000 bills.
Population Dubai’s population is estimated to be approximately 2.1 million people out of which approximately 85% comprise of expat population. Expat population chiefly comprise of Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Filipinos. British expats is the largest group of Western expats in Dubai. It also has sizeable community of Iranians.

Dubai’s Do’s And Dont’s By Fatima Anwar Beginning with the simplest question: Is it necessary to wear an Emirati dress during your stay in Dubai? No, Dubai doesn’t have a particular dress code but it is always advisable to wear clothes covering your knees and shoulders. You might be asked to leave a mall or public park if you wear revealing clothes or shirts with offensive slogans. Men must cover their chest, knees and any inappropriate tattoos; it is considered as disrespect to Islam.Hence it may offend the Emiratis. Beachwear can be worn at the beach, swimming pool or the water park, but not in public places. Make sure to dress modestly and decently in public.
Is drinking alcohol a crime in Dubai? There are many hotels with licensed restaurants bars and clubs. You are most welcome to visit those hotels and enjoy your time if you are above 21 years of age. If you’re caught carrying alcohol outside the hotel without the required liquor permit, you might be arrested. To avoid accidents and unpleasant incidents, alcohol is strictly forbidden in malls, while you are driving and all other public places.
Is holding hands in public allowed? Holding hands is allowed, but kissing and touching unsuitably are not. Any public display of affection is not tolerated and it might result in imprisonment or even deportation.
Are there restrictions on photography in Dubai? Dubai is a place with wonderful landmarks and marvellous entertainment facilities, you are always welcome to take pictures, but just make sure that you don’t photograph women without their permission and other places which are prohibited.
Can we carry sleep depressants or drugs? No, any medication carried without medical prescription is not allowed. There is zero-tolerance policy for drugs in Dubai and possession of illegal substances can result in minimum of three years imprisonment.

Sharjah Classic Car Museum

he Museum consists of more than 100 classic cars of different brands that were manufactured, beginning from 1915 to 1979. For all those car fanatics, this is the perfect place to admire and learn the historical significance of these classic cars than just paying attention to specifications such as horse power, engine as most of us do nowadays. This Museum gives you the opportunity to witness the incredible transition of cars dating back to the 1900’s.You will be able to see the development in the car industry throughout the 20th century as they have five galleries that portray different eras.
They have an exceptional and fascinating collection of classic cars including the American Dodge (1915) – the oldest car at the museum, the model T Ford, Rolls Royce 25/30 and Fiat, while the cars from 1940 to 1950 are the Cadillac Fleetwood, Riley RM, Bentley Mark VI and Chevrolet Bel Air. The other galleries comprise of cars from 1950 to 1979. One of the most exciting features of this place is their special collection of 10 cars belonging to the Ruler of Sharjah – His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi. The Shaikh’s collection includes a 1969 Mercedes Pullman Limousine; one of only 2000 in the world. Located near the Sharjah International Airport, this place is on every car enthusiast’s to go list.
Each era depicts the transformation of cars as well as a lesson on when and how the first vehicle was manufactured. One would be surprised to learn that cars have not only changed in their exterior and interior looks, but also the usage of materials in the car has radically changed over the years. The Camel Racing Season

amel racing has gained great momentum and become a popular sport in Dubai. It is regarded as one of the oldest and traditional sports in the region attracting race fanatics from the UAE and GCC countries as well as global tourists. Camel racing being a traditional sport, it plays a very significant part in the country’s heritage back to the days when the Bedouins relied on camels for milk, transport, currency and entertainment. Today camel racing has turned into big business, with camel owners competing for prize money of Dhs 2,500 but on more important meetings it can go up to Dhs 5,000 plus a luxury car such as a FJ Cruisers as an added bonus. Although, earlier the riders were child jockeys, but due to the pressure from human rights groups, they have been replaced by little robotic machines which can be controlled via a remote control, so now owners drive alongside the track controlling their jockeys.

et me capture your attention by saying the ‘Noire’ night which means ‘black’ in French is literally dining in the dark. This captivating and enthralling experience is like no other. We all know how important first impressions are, and what if you cannot SEE to judge but only TASTE, TOUCH & SMELL? Located at Fairmont on the first floor, the lift opens to a huge marble floor which the white bar on the left. That’s the first stop before you step into the darkness. Here we were handed a drink in a black glass and had to play a game of guessing the ingredients! Surprisingly I guessed both of them – A refreshing orange and ginger ale drink. Then we were greeted by the restaurant manager; Mr. Sunny who gave us a briefing and introduced us to the not-so-normal waitrons for the notso-normal restaurant.
We stood in a line guided by the waitron wearing night vision goggles and followed him into complete darkness to be escorted to our not at all visible tables. Once seated, we were told where the cutlery was placed on the table and asked to feel around and get an idea. It took a while to get accustomed to the blackness as the restaurant is completely blackened out expect for the tiny dots from the night vision googles moving around. The first thought that came to mind was this would be the perfect place to go on a blind date as you literally cannot see your date!I noticed they had placed bread on the left plate and a glass of fine Italian wine on the right, and soon we were served a potato salad, keep in mind no one was told what the dishes were. The fun began as everyone began to guess the ingredients used in each dish.

Next was the tantalizing appetizer of smoked and oven-baked prawns with daikon radish, chalets, cabbage with soya and vinegar jus. The smell was enough you tell you how delicious this dish was. We were soon served a palate cleanser – Raspberry Sorbet; funnily enough we thought it tasted a little orangey with a hint of lemon flavor. For the main course, they definitely kept us guessing with a dish of soft chicken with crispy chicken skin, mushrooms, carrots, polenta, duck sauce and teriyaki sauce completely throwing us off with no one able to guess the true ingredients besides the chicken. Once we were all refreshed with the hot towels, I was surprised to find a pre-dessert shot kept in front of me; it tasted like baileys and Kahlua, when it actually turned out to be a concoction of gin, blue curacao, whipped cream and hazelnut syrup!

Before we left, we were handed an after meal shot called Dmitri Courage with a hint of vodka, ginger beer with cranberry and lime juice. This night made us feel blessed and appreciate what we have, and kudos to ‘Spectrum on One’ for donating AED 27 from every meal to the Sight Savers International Charity Organization. BENIHANA Japanese With A Twist.

enihana is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants with a modern outlook. I can graciously say I have had one of the best experiences at Benihana located at Amwaj Rotana in JBR. As we walked in, we were warmly greeted by every member of the restaurant and escorted to our seats for the wonderful and hilarious “Teppanyaki Experience”. The simple yet modern touch with colors of red, olive green incorporated with wooden and granite décor gave this place a chic look. Teppanyaki experience was introduced by Hiroaki Aoki (owner) as a means of cooking and entertaining guests simultaneously as the chef prepares your meal in front of you whilst performing amazing cutlery stunts and stomach-clinching jokes. We began our appetizing journey with the ‘Gyoza’, a home-made steamed chicken dumpling served with a flavorful layo sauce; the chicken was so soft and tender with the layo sauce being the perfect addition. One has to try the tempura in any Japanese restaurant, so we chose the ‘King prawn tempura’, this lightly battered dish with crispy fried wasabi mayo and Tokyo pickles was like visiting prawn heaven with a delicious ginger radish sauce to accompany it. Whilst we were busy munching down on the appetizers, the chef arrived to start our awaited teppanyaki experience, I would definitely recommend everyone to try this; it will surpass your expectations. It includes a beautifully concocted ‘Miso’ soup, which is good for digestion, a salad, main course and deserts. Chef Reyner was extremely witty and made our meal filled with laughter and deliciousness as we chose the ‘Benihana Special’ – Half Caribbean lobster tail and beef tenderloin as well as ‘Rocky’s choice’ – sirloin and steak. He cooked these meals with amazing precision and we devoured one of the juiciest lobster and steak grills.

After almost filling our tummies with the scrumptious meal, we headed outdoors to be seated amongst the lit-up palm trees and candle light tables with the beautiful weather as an added bonus to dive into the desert paradise. You must try the ‘Hammaki’; a Japanese eggroll filled with a rich chocolate & caramel banana filling with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream – OISHII! (Delicious) And the ‘Mochi’; this is the traditional Japanese sweet made in ice cream bonbons with mango and blueberries on the side – Divine!
Before we could take our leave, the (manager-name) let us try out the various ‘Sake’s’; an alcoholic Japanese beverage made of rice and water which can be served either warm or cold from a choice of more than 150 varieties. It is usually consumed with a meal. We also tasted the traditional ‘Umeshu’ plum wine with a rich & aromatic natural sweet plum flavor. A simple contemporary restaurant, Sumibiya, is the first Yakiniku style restaurant in Dubai- a perfect experience for all the barbeque lovers as they can grill their own food now in a restaurant. Hidden between a carpet shop and a club, one could never guess what a unique and exciting experience this place holds for them. The dark furniture, dimly lit lanterns and the soft music; what a perfect start to a Japanese dining experience. Before we could place an order, the waitress helped us through a little journey to all the different desserts, salad bar and the diverse range of uncooked meat offered in the buffet. The iced salad bar lit with neon lights was definitely quite impressive.
As suggested by the waitress, we tried Chicken Ball in Korean Sauce as one of our starters. Garnished with sesame seeds, the Korean Chicken Balls were neatly placed on a bed of lettuce. Though a little chewy these flavorsome minced balls were sweet and zesty.While my friend and I enjoyed our Spicy Kimchi Soup packed with cubed fish and a distinctive tangy flavor, I couldn’t help but stare at the large grill inserted in the center of our pebble table and wonder when we are going to grill our food. For the main course I ordered a chicken platter whereas my friend ordered prawns. They have sea food platter as well that is set with a wide array of sea food that I would recommend to all the sea food lovers. As I sipped my delicious strawberry juice I was surprised that in the whole restaurant I just saw two waiters diligently at service while the crowd kept pouring in.

It was time for the much waited part of the whole experience. As the waiter set the flame for us, the waitress served the chicken platter and prawns. The waiter helped us get started by keeping the prawn on grill and squeezing lemon on it. We quickly grabbed our tongs and like fine gentlemen huddled to grill the food. While the food was on grill, the waitress helped us with three amazing dips right in front of us; Yakiniku with sesame seeds, Fonso and the Black pepper sauce. Though I avoid black pepper, I just couldn’t stop dipping my chicken in the rich creamy textured black pepper sauce. While the chicken was perfectly marinated and tender I found the prawns bland. A little flavour on the prawn could sparkle up the taste perfectly. As suggested by the waitress we ordered, The Kimchi Bokumbum rice that complimented our main course perfectly. Garlic, crisp rice with a variety of spices; the Kimchi rice was a complete meal itself.

Sumibiya Definitely worth a try! For desserts we ordered ice cream with grilled fruits. The waiter changed the grill for us and helped us get started on grilling the fruits. My friend was a little disappointed to see vanilla ice cream on her dish though she ordered chocolate. Since the waiters were all tied up we didn’t mind digging in the vanilla flavor.

The Minister of State and managing director of Dubai’s Expo 2020 Bid Committee, Reem al Hashemi, pledged that Dubai would “give Expo 2020 the recognition it deserves.” On hearing Reem al Hashemi’s case, the Secretary General of BIE said, “Dubai’s bid was excellent. I was very impressed. Should they win, it will be wonderful.”

This is possible by using several wind turbines on the roof, generating electricity for the movement as well as its residents. Penthouse tenants will be able to park their cars in their apartments by using specialized lifts. Location and completion date is yet to be confirmed.
Dubai Sports City This city will embody a world class sporting infrastructure making it a sporting destination in Dubai. It will have everything from Multi-purpose Stadium used for athletics, cricket and football, Cricket Stadium, Indoor Arena, Hockey Stadium. This city within a city concept will provide a platform for youth development, recreational activities, residential blocks, international schools, hotels, medical and community centers and entertainment spots.
Universal Studios Universal Studios will be coming to Dubailand in form of a world-class amusement theme park with exhilarating rides, dining, shopping, movies and the list goes on. Moreover, it will showcase various shows such as the Eight Voyage of Sinbad, Waterworld, Broadway Rose Theatre along with the thrilling rides such as Revenge of the Mummy, Woody Woodpeckers Nuthouse Coaster and so many more. Lego Land The legoland theme park will open in mid-2016 at Dubailand according to Merlin Entertainment. ubai is an exemplary emblem of conventional and contemporary architecture. This mash up ranges from elegant, courtyard houses – Bastakiya Quarters to the Iconic Burj Khalifa. Dubai’s skyline has transformed over time. The barren land slowly and gradually turned into one of the world’s most talked about Skyline. The conventional Architecture and the modern chic buildings attract tourists equally. The Bastakiya Quarters, named after a town of Bastak in Southern Iran are considered as Dubai’s historic heart. After entering the place, leaving the futuristic Dubai behind, one senses the ambience of history. The intricately carved doors, ornate grills, hardwood roofs, wooden balconies and the beautiful hanging oil lamps will entice you to walk through the alleys and admire such detailed historic architecture.

On the other end, the diverse Dubai offers to witness the World’s tallest man made structure; the Burj Khalifa, a centre piece of Dubai, inaugurated in 2009 and is located in Down Town Dubai. The Burj Khalifa structure is inspired by the abstraction of the desert flower called Hymenocallis flower. The Y-shaped floor plan when viewed from the base or top is reminiscent of the onion domes common in Islamic architecture. Apart from the two dominant and diverse architectural structures mentioned above, Dubai has a range of amazingly well thought, functional, aesthetically pleasing architectural buildings.

Some of the iconic buildings in Dubai has been enhancing the landscape since ages, standing tall, attracting on goers. The Emirates Towers are worth a mention here. This tall structure is seen differently through different angles. The unique site is built in a way that it transforms perspective for the onlooker giving them a chance to experience excellent architectural skills. The World Trade Centre is the reminder of Dubai’s success as it was one of the first built structures indicating the growth of Dubai. This reminiscence is famous for its enormous size and structure for its time.
