I’m as shocked as anyone that we are already talking about Christmas, but families are planning their festivities earlier than ever. Parents may want to combine family fun with necessity as they entertain the children and get some seasonal shopping done. So we’ve featured the most exciting visits to Santa’s various grottos in the West, plus reindeer experiences, ice rinks and winter markets (P31). Before that, though, traditional autumn activities loom and we have our most comprehensive listings yet of Halloween and Bonfire Night events (P15) , plus pieces on girls’ football (P6), and an exciting new science publication (P36). So, toodlepip! Or should that be Whizz Pop Bang?

Last year’s 101 Dalmations. Pic Farrows Creative
Expect a remarkable experience at Bristol’s Tobacco Factory Theatres this winter as audiences are transported to a land far away, with a princess who just can’t keep her feet on the ground. Director John Nicholson and designer Phil Eddolls explain.
I
n a kingdom far away lives an extraordinary princess: a princess strikingly different to any you’ll have ever heard of. Strikingly different to anyone who has ever lived. Because, you see, she has no gravity. Now you might be thinking, “What fun! To fly and float and bound around weightless in the air!” But of course it’s not as simple as that... ‘The Light Princess’ comes hot on the heels of the phenomenal ‘101 Dalmatians’ last year and, in previous years, the awardwinning ‘Cinderella: A Fairytale’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Yet again Tobacco Factory Theatres, with their partner, Peepolykus, have assembled an exceptional production team to bring George Macdonald ‘s beautiful, original fairy tale to the stage, including

writer Thomas Eccleshare, director John Nicholson, designer Phil Eddolls and musician Verity Standen. And what a stage it will be! Regulars at this Bristol theatre will know its intimate auditorium is up close and personal and is one of the best ways to experience theatre with all the family. But, this year, producer Tobacco Factory Theatres has gone one step further, transforming the space into a visual and theatrical playground for actors and audiences. Phil Eddolls, tells us more: “We’ve worked with all of the space available to create an immersive, intricate set which will have the wow factor for audiences as soon as they walk in,” says Eddolls. “It’s a traditional fairytale world with castle turrets, towers, green grass and white fluffy clouds, plus costumes that could leap straight off the pages of a children’s story book. Nicholson adds, “You could be forgiven for thinking this is Disney, but it’s a fairy tale with a difference. Our princess is unconventional. She has a unique ailment; when she was a baby, her slighted auntie cursed her to lose her gravity. And not only does she constantly fly away at the slightest movement but she’s completely lighthearted, to the extent that she can’t take anything seriously, even the prince who falls in love with her. And so her world is quite often completely upside down.
When everyone around her is sad, she’s blissfully happy. While they walk around, she can’t keep her feet on the ground. And so the perfect fairy tale world that Phil has created very quickly descends into chaos. “Then there’s this prince who’s aware he’s supposed to be dashing and to whisk her off her feet (no pun intended!) but he’s a bit fatalistic and so he’s not quite the match for her feisty nature. It’s impossible to cheer him up and impossible to cheer her down! The fun really begins when our princess discovers that, when she swims, her gravity returns.” He says that creating both flying and swimming on stage is one of the most exciting parts of the production, and challenging to achieve. “Generally, when she’s not flying, she’s in the water,” says Nicholson. “For her that’s very real, and - though I don’t want to give the game away - it might start to feel surprisingly real for the audience too! We’ve got lots of tricks up our sleeves including illusion and theatrical surprises, and a really wonderful group of actors to pull it all off. “As well as that, our incredible musician Verity Standen, creator of ‘Mmm Hmmm’ and ‘Hug’, is working directly with our actors to create an original, bewitching and beautiful a cappella soundscape for the show. Verity is skilled in using the voice in a multitude of
mesmerising and sometimes surprising ways - it’s singing without songs; creating a world and its characters with the voice.” As with most fairy tales, there are ups and downs; a moment or two where all is lost and there’s a heroic deed to be done, but it all comes together in the end providing a fun-filled, rollercoaster journey. You’ll just have to get along to the show to find out more... The Light Princess Thu 26 Nov – Sun 10 Jan. Tobacco Factory Theatres, Raleigh Road, Bristol, BS3 1TF. As England’s women footballers succeed on the international stage, pupils in the West are discovering that football is as rewarding for girls as it is for boys. Tom Morgan reports.

he buzz of excitement before kick-off . . . the joy of scoring a goal and winning . . . or even the despair of losing a match with the final kick of the game. “The beautiful game”, as football is widely described, provides experiences fundamental to the development of any child, creating memories for life. Just ask the girls of Westbury Park Primary School, who, in May last year, made it all the way to the finals of the English Schools FA Danone National Cup, staged at the training ground of Premier League club Aston Villa. “It was a truly magical experience,” says team coach and teacher Jane Whitaker as she recalls the excitement of the girls Under 11s. “They were designated their own changing rooms in a state-of-the-art facility, and for a day got to feel like they were professional footballers.” This was the culmination of months of hard work by the girls. To reach the competition finals, they first had to win a number of regional competitions in the West Country. First was the Bristol Stage competition, held at Clifton College playing fields, followed by the Gloucestershire County Finals at Oxtalls Sports Park and South West Regional Finals at Filton Wise Campus. Many of the girls in the school team now also play with local club, the Westbury Park Foxes. Their progress predates this summer’s World Cup campaign by the England women’s team, who beat Germany for third place, this country’s most successful performance in any international

football tournament since the famous World Cup victory by England’s male team in 1966. Success both nationally and locally reflects the dramatic development of girls’ football and its infrastructure in recent years. While previously football has been considered a male domain, putting many young girls off the sport, the Football Association (FA) says it has made a significant effort to create as many opportunities for young girls to play the game as possible. In a recent interview on the FA website Kelly Simmons, the association’s director of participation and development, says “We want to shatter the myth that
football is [just] for boys, and give thousands of girls the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful national game and all the benefits of taking part in team sports.” The FA’s #WeCanPlay campaign aims to boost female participation in the sport by increasing the quantity of girlsonly after-school training sessions for ages 7-11. “The onus is on ensuring that the children who participate enjoy the game, irrespective of their ability and within a safe environment where they can make friends and develop skills,” says another FA statement. Jane Whitaker shares the belief that it is the “taking part” in sport which
counts and says the strong bond of friendship which the Westbury Park girls developed throughout their journey was the most important factor in their success. She even feels this was a more significant achievement than actually reaching the finals. “They all really enjoy playing for the team and turn up rain or shine,” says Jane. “Because they get on so well and enjoy what they are doing they play better as a team”. Since this success, the girls have continued playing football as a team at their new secondary school, but Jane says their success has also inspired younger girls in their former school to take up the footballing mantel and take advantage of the increased opportunities in this area for girls to participate in football. With the FA’s latest initiative to increase access to girl’s football both regionally and nationally, there will be many more opportunities for girls aged 7-11 to take part and forge memories which will last a lifetime. Anyone seeking to enter a girls’ team into these competitions should contact their relevant regional branch of the FA for further information. d r a o b n Pi FHS: a smooth transition Being bullied, not making friends, getting lost, being in trouble, homework – these are all familiar worries for children moving on to secondary school. At Fairfield High School (FHS) in Bristol, the concerns have been addressed by the students themselves. A group of 11 and 12-year-olds have made a transition website to help those who will follow in their footsteps. The colourful site includes video interviews with staff and students as well as masses of information in the young people’s own words. The students say, “We have made this website because most of us felt worried over the summer holidays and when we got here we realised we shouldn’t have been nervous.” The website complements an extensive transition programme at FHS, including a free summer camp. FHS works with primary schools offering support including its Golden Ticket scheme to a Stepping Up programme for vulnerable students. From rags to riches Did you know that 100 tonnes of secondhand clothing are exported for re-use each week from Bristol? Founded in 1972, Bristol Textile Recyclers is the only textile recycler in the West of England, working with schools and charities across the region, in Gloucestershire, the Midlands, the M4 corridor and Hertfordshire. BTR works with 300 charity shops, helping with the recycling of their unsellable clothing, shoes, bags, belts, bric-a-brac and books. This helps the charities to fundraise further and keep their stock room clear for new donations. BTR also works with schools, PTAs, community groups and other third-sector, non-profit organisations, helping them to fundraise by organising clothes drives and placing recycling banks at their premises. To organise your own clothes drive, simply give them a call and arrange a date for collection. BTR will provide you with a personalised leaflet to share with students, parents and teachers to promote the event. Tours of BTR’s factory can also be arranged. New junior classes at Red Maids’ Term started in style at Red Maids’ Junior School, Bristol, with a visit from Ayshah Tull, CBBC ‘Newsround’ presenter and journalist (pictured), who encouraged the girls to have aspirations and be determined to achieve their dreams, just like she has. One of the most popular lessons in Years 5 and 6 is current affairs, where the pupils are encouraged to think beyond their own experiences and increase their awareness of the world around them. ‘Newsround’ often features in these lessons as a learning tool and so Ayshah’s visit was eagerly anticipated. Questions for Ayshah ranged from how she began her career, her scariest moment, to what she had for breakfast. While spending some time at Red Maids’, Ayshah also cut the ribbon to officially open two new classrooms, built to accommodate a two class entry from Year 3. Perform keeps its classes small to ensure children receive lots of individual attention from the experienced actor/teachers, who focus on developing the four Cs: confidence, communication, coordination and concentration. This term, Perform children are being whisked away to the wonderful world of ‘The Magician’s Chamber’ to take part in a spellbinding Arthurian adventure. They’ll meet the ‘Rabbit in a Hat’, dance ‘The Broomstick Flick’ and stop wicked Morgan Le Fay from turning the baby King Arthur into a hamster. There’s also a sticker poster, a CD of songs and stories and a special script to help children rehearse for the magical end of term performance. On your Nelly!
N
elly has always dreamed of going on an adventure ever since her father Captain Bones Peabody sailed off to the other side of the world many years ago. Despite his promises, Nelly’s father never returned, so one day she and her tortoise best friend Colombus set off their own voyage: to bring Captain Peabody home. Nelly captains her own ship, complete with hand-knitted sails, surviving powerful storms and fighting with pirates before discovering tropical beaches. She eventually tracks down her father in the most intriguing of locations, but soon discovers bringing him home will be just as difficult as finding him in the first place. Nelly is a strong main character who acts independently and decisively in spite of her not-too-helpful parents. At all times she proves herself a loyal friend and daughter, making sure her actions match her words. It’s a fun, imaginative adventure which children aged 4 to 7 will thoroughly enjoy. This pacey historical novel starts with a bang and finishes in a puff of smoke. In between, it’s an all-action thriller set in 17th century London which promises to keep readers aged 9-13 gripped from start to finish. The story follows protagonist Christopher Rowe, an orphan raised by apothecary (an old-fashioned chemist) Master Benedict Blackthorn, and his attempt to get to the bottom of a series of mysterious murders of his colleagues on the cobbled streets of historic London. These streets are brought to life by the puzzles and potions (supposedly based on real recipes from the time – strictly not to be repeated at home!) which accompany this suspense-ridden thriller. This is not a tale for the faint-hearted. There is theatrical-style murder, blood and guts at numerous points in the book. But, for children who love potions and puzzle solving, this novel will provide a thoroughly entertaining and gripping read.
The Great Northern Race is a dash to the top of the world. Teams flock from all over the north to race through night forests and icy seas, all hoping to arrive first at the Snowfather’s palace, positioned at the top of the world. This year Shen and Sika are desperate to take part, but they have something the other contestants lack: 66 pugs! Despite the chilly setting, this is a heart-warming story based in a winter wonderland which will go down perfectly over the winter months with children aged 4 to 9. The illustrations by Sarah McIntyre stimulate the imagination and Philip Reeve’s lively text moves the story along at almost as frenetic a pace as a sled powered by 66 pugs.

Kidnapped!
Times a changing
Written from three different perspectives, this novel is designed to tug at the heart-strings of 10 to 13-yearold readers with a keen interest in nature. Imara and Bobo are two kidnapped youngsters who bond over the plight of Kitwana a baby gorilla, taken from the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo and due to be sold by their captors on the black market. As the children’s escape plans unfold, the reader is introduced to many of the damaging influences of developed countries’ demands on remote African cultures, such as the illegal market in coltan, a mineral required for many digital devices we use. This story grapples with powerful themes such as loss, friendship and the destruction of the environment. It is aimed at slightly more mature readers who will find themselves captivated by an exhilarating and educative read.
Time-travelling hero Joe Hopkins is back in the third installation of the Scar Gatherer series. Previously, Joe has travelled to Roman Britain and the Viking era, while this time, he remounts his horse after a fall, only to find himself in Tudor England. He becomes engulfed in a gripping story which combines fantasy and history as he becomes reacquainted with Lucy, a girl he has met in previous journeys back in time. Wiltshire author Julia Edwards has a clear writing style and an eye for detail which brings individual scenes alive but occasionally slows down the plot. Nonetheless she paints a lucid picture of a boy’s growing awareness of the adult world, and the range of burgeoning feelings he has for his friend. In a coming of age tale which reveals how different life was in Tudor times, Joe also discovers the first feelings of love and loss that adulthood could have in store for him.

Tom Morgan discovers a new magazine which proves that getting children excited about maths, physics and chemistry isn’t rocket science after all. meteorologists or aspiring neurosurgeons. ‘Whizz Pop Bang!’ is the brainchild of Cotswolds-based physics graduate, educationalist and broadcaster Jenny Inglis, and has already attracted over 1,000 subscribers since launching this summer. She says she’s received many letters of thanks from grateful parents, and even had reports of children hosting their own afterschool science clubs since they started reading the magazine. Inglis, the resident science expert on BBC television’s ‘Blue Peter’, passionately believes science should be a critical part of any young child’s education, and worries that it is not given enough attention in primary schools. “There’s a heavy focus on literacy and numeracy in schools and it’s difficult for teachers to dedicate sufficient time to teaching science,” she says. “It takes a specialist level of knowledge to be really passionate about the subject.” ‘Whizz Pop Bang!’, she believes, could really combat that difficulty and help inspire the next generation of scientists. “When you’re a child, the world is still full of wonders”, Jenny points out. “I wanted to inspire more children to get into science by giving them a magazine designed to open their eyes to its beauty and simplicity.” As well as her ‘Blue Peter’ role, Jenny is the mother of three young children and has the perfect skillset for engaging kids in science, making something that seems complicated both easy to understand and enjoyable to take part in. One of her key objectives is to combat the stereotype that science is “just for boys”. She explains how she’s fed up with seeing predominantly pink magazines targeted towards young girls, while blue-coloured publications are aimed at boys. Instead, she wants to provide a gender neutral alter-
native which enables young children to cultivate an interest in something much more worthwhile. “What has given me most joy is tha both boys and girls are getting excited about ‘Whizz Pop Bang!’” she says. The first three issues have provided a wealth of interactive, carefully designed experiments, easy to follow at home using basic household materials. For example, children will love making a hovercraft from just a balloon and a CD, or learning how to make a bee sanctuary for your garden using just a large bottle and some flower stems. Rather than just being bombarded with information, children can actively get involved in practising science. Another key feature of the magazine is the fact that it’s published in print and not online, which might
“I wanted to inspire more children to get into science by giving them a magazine designed to open their eyes to its beauty and simplicity.” Jenny Inglis seem old-fashioned in these internet-led days. But, Jenny stresses, “An awful lot of children get on better with something physical. It’s rare for children to have something landing on the doorstep which is addressed to them. They get really excited about it.”
She makes an effort to ensure ‘Whizz Pop Bang!’ follows the national curriculum, so parents and teachers can be confident the magazine will assist pupils’ schoolwork as well as helping ignite a passion for all things science. As well as enthusiasm from parents, she’s also received positive feedback from the science community and media colleagues including Jason Bradbury of Channel 5’s ‘The Gadget Show’, who helped early subscriptions when he started tweeting about the magazine, while astronomer Mark Thompson is another supporter. Inglis is hoping the magazine will reach 5,000 subscriptions soon, and that ever-growing numbers of children will check the letter box for their monthly science challenge. If she’s successful, teachers, parents, and, most importantly, the next generation will be delighted at the joy in science that her magazine has inspired. Whizz Pop Bang! Review COMPETITION
Win family tickets to The Nutcracker and The Snowman at Colston Hall!
T
reat your family this Christmas to a double bill of festive family favourites, compered by Classic FM’s Tim Lihoreau. The Orchestra of Welsh National Opera and conductor Neil Thomson present a suite of music from Tchaikovsky’s much loved ballet, evoking a magical world where toys come to life, and a Sugar Plum Fairy dances. After the interval, the soundtrack to The Snowman is brought magically to life alongside a screening of the film, including the classic ‘Walking in the Air’. Build the excitement to Christmas Day and introduce your little ones to the thrill of live music with this spellbinding show.

hether you’re a visitor to Bristol or (as we are) long-standing residents, there are few better ways of discovering the city or seeing it afresh than from the upper deck of an open top bus. And Bristol’s well-established bus tour company Bristol IN.SIGHT, currently in the process of changing its name from Bristol City Sightseeing, offers a splendid view of the city’s most historic and intriguing corners. We braved a chilly but bright autumn day to embark from the city centre, with our son Image courtesy Bristol IN.SIGHT Joe thoroughly enjoying the sense of adventure. From first storey tours do you know the origins of the of Clifton’s elegant terraces to name Blackboy Hill (nothing to astonishing views of the Bristol do with slavery, as it happens) or Channel from The Downs, via dizthe chequered history of Bristol zying sights, from The Portway, Cathedral? of the Avon Gorge and the Clifton Whether you’re after a deeper Suspension Bridge, we revelled in understanding of the city or just a this new perspective on familiar great family outing (you can hop landmarks. on and off the bus over a two day Bristol IN.SIGHT prides itself period), Bristol IN.SIGHT is highly on having knowledgeable tour recommended. Look out, too, for guides rather than anonymous their exciting autumn and winter headphone commentaries and events in our Roundabout section our guide, Gerry (not pictured), and Winter Thrills feature. purpose built high ropes course has arrived at Mojo Active’s Almondsbury location, great news for anyone seeking a new and exhilarating way to experience the great outdoors. The challenge course complements the low ropes elements already used by the activity centre, and has been open to the public since mid September, from 10am to 5pm weekends and school holidays. Families and individuals can book 1.5 hour sessions online (see below). “Our high ropes course is packed with exciting challenges for people of all ages,” says Mark Johnson, who co-founded Mojo Active in 2012 alongside business partner Jo McConnell. “As well as providing an active day out for individuals and families, it will also cater for schools, corporate team building, stag and hen parties, and children’s parties,” The structure combines 15 vertical and horizontal challenges and is accessed by an initial climb up a ‘Burma Bridge’. From there, visitors cross the rickety bridge, 38

climb to the islands in the sky, swing over the organ pipes and enjoy the long ride down the final zip wire, under the careful supervision of fully trained instructors. Participants wear a climbing harness and are protected by a safety wire at all times. The course uses the very latest ‘CLiC-iT’ belay system, with at least one of the karabiners con-
nected at all times to ensure optimum safety. Children aged over 7 should have no problems clipping on securely and enjoying the full experience. This allows groups and individuals to learn about risk taking, test their own perceived limits and understand how to work collaboratively – all while the adrenalin is kicking in and they are having fun.
“North Bristol has been calling out for a high ropes facility, and we have recently invested to meet this demand, while enhancing our range of activities that support our philosophy of outdoor adventure, fitness, safety and fun,” says Jo, “If it’s been a while since you’ve climbed a tree, then it’s time to come and see us!” Mojo Active is set in 100 acres of land overlooking the Severn Bridge, five minutes from the M4/ M5 interchange (J16 M5) or two minutes from J17 on the M5. High ropes visitors can park at the Tall Trees entrance, where there is a reception and toilets. Ffi: Mojo Active Over Court Farm, Over Land, Almondsbury, Bristol BS32 4DF. W: www.mojoactive.co.uk.
