Summer’s here and the time is right for getting those children outdoors and enjoying some much-needed sunshine. Accordingly, we have toured the West Country to find the region’s most exciting open air attractions in our feature on P. 22. A downside of summer can be children’s tendency to let key skills slip, especially reading. Our summer reading feature (P.37) provides hints on how to keep up kids’ passion for the written word. Finally, many readers say goodbye to primary school at this time of year, as they move to secondary education. Our P.39 feature suggests ways to make this a happy transition.

South Glos takes off! Get ready for a maelstrom of summer fun this August at the first ever South Gloucestershire Show.

T

he beauty of South Gloucestershire is well known to local people and visitors alike. Its many towns and villages hold fantastic events of their own but, with no city, the area has always lacked a real focal point, according to the organisers of a major new attraction in the area. The organising team believes the people of South Gloucestershire need an event where they can come together as a whole and celebrate what it means to live and work in the area. This is why they decided to launch the South Gloucestershire Show, which looks and feels similar to a traditional county show but which, they say, will be much

more than that. “Although the rural landscape and way-of-life is fully represented, we didn’t want the show to become an agricultural show with limited appeal,” says a spokesman. “We want our show to be a big party that everyone can enjoy, no matter what their age, interests or background: a show for everyone!” The South Gloucestershire Show will be held at The Windmill Fisheries Showground as a celebration of all things South Gloucestershire and a showcase for the county’s lifestyle and leisure offerings. It will bring together the people of the county for a weekend of fun and entertainment, complete with attractions for visitors of all ages and plenty for the under 5s. Among the mix of displays by big brands, smaller retailers, a beer tent and food stands, visitors to the show can expect to try their hand at motorsports or learn how to change a car tyre in a pitstop situation. Also for motoring fans there’s a classic car show organised by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club and an interactive 4X4 area. There’s a chance to have a go at golf, fishing and shooting with top professional coaches, and to watch daredevils from the Extreme Wheels perform their tricks in the cycle show area, not to mention the hot air balloons. Visitors can watch and participate in the fun and games in the main arena, while the special kids’ zone, which includes Little Tikes Town, Jingaloo and Punch and Judy, will keep the children entertained all day. If you’re still not tired out,

dance until 9pm to the sounds of some of the best musicians from the region and beyond at the mini music festival. Acts include Soul Side and X Factor stars Mia and the Moon. Although there’s plenty of parking, organisers are doing everything they can to make cycling to the event a genuine option for visitors. The showground itself is situated along the Avon Cycleway that connects areas in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset. The show organisers are working closely with leading sustainable travel charity Sustrans who will be attending the show over the two days, providing both entertainment and practical advice for visitors who want to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their fitness at the same time. There will also be prizes for anyone who registers with Sustrans and cycles to the event, with a star prize of a £500 mountain bike donated by Marin Bikes. If you want to avoid queues on the day and book your tickets early, visit the website and buy your show tickets online. A

sporting chance

What support is available for disabled children who wish to participate in sport? Ellie Pipe discovers a wealth of West Country opportunities.

S

ports and activities are vital to a child’s health, happiness and wellbeing. This is as true for disabled children as it is for their ablebodied friends, possibly even more so. Sport is not only beneficial to children’s physical health, but can help their emotional well-being, social and communication skills and improve overall confidence. The NHS Change 4 Life website recommends children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day. While for many parents the main issue is luring their little ones away from the TV’s tempting glare, for parents of disabled children, the challenges may sometimes feel more overwhelming. The good news is, help is at hand. There are a number of charities and organisations set up across the country specifically geared towards supporting disabled children who want to take part in sport. Wheelpower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, is one such organisation, striving to provide opportunities for children nationwide to enjoy sports and physical activity in a fun and inclusive environment. Wheelpower’s chief executive, Martin McElhatton says one of the main challenges disabled children have to overcome is finding a welcoming and accessible club, with qualified coaches. They also have to obtain the correct equipment to play. Wheelpower can assist with finding a local club that is right for a child and also advises schools how to make PE lessons more inclusive, beneficial and enjoyable for disabled children. “Every day, more and more disabled children get the chance to play sport at a local club or in PE, but more can be done,” says Martin. Of course, as every parent knows, sports clubs often don’t come cheap, especially if specialist equipment or support is required.

much more is on offer. Local leisure centres will often be able to offer advice on what facilities and programmes they offer to disabled children, or for some cheap, cheerful sporting fun, check out the NHS Change 4 Life website.

Help and funding are available from organisations such as Get Kids Going, a national charity that focusses on giving disabled children access to sport and offers sports grants to aspiring youngsters. Whether your child is the next Ellie Simmonds or David Weir, or just wants to get out and have some fun, there are a wealth of opportunities on our doorstep just waiting to be explored. Horse riding is good exercise, therapeutic and a particularly good way for physically disabled children to gain a sense of independence and freedom. Rein and Shine is a British Horse Society (BHS) Highly Commended riding centre that also has the Accessibility Mark from the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Children can learn in a relaxed, fun and safe environment and the Hoof Club, open to all children, aged 4 to 15, incorporates riding, horse welfare and management studies. Out in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside, Activity Camps create

an unforgettable, action-packed school holiday for children aged 4 to 12. From arts and crafts to zorbing, there is a massive range of activities available for all children, run by qualified teachers, sports coaches and trainee teachers, with additional one-to-one support available if needed. Aspiring sea-farers can pop down to Bristol’s harbourside and meet the lovely All-Aboard, which runs a registered RYA Sailability Centre offering disabled people of all ages a chance to participate in the challenging activity of sailing. Evening classes are available for children aged 8 and over, and schools and groups can also be accommodated. For something more land-based, why not let your child create a song and a dance at G Dance, the Gloucestershire-based company specialising in inclusive forms of dance and arts? Or, perhaps they will turn their hand to, well, almost anything, at the extensive aspire Trust facilities in Gloucestershire where swimming, archery and

Blow the whistle on sunburn Julia Bradbury supports the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, helping keep kids safe in the sun

The summer holidays provide many opportunities for outdoor fun. But protecting children from the sun can be tricky. To help, the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund has devised the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, designed for those who work outdoors with children, ensuring that they are actively protected throughout the day. This free online resource was developed by a leading skin cancer specialist, alongside experts in PE and child welfare. It is supported by over 30 national governing bodies of sport and outdoor activities. Participants follow simple guidelines based on ‘educating, protecting and leading by example’. Once they have completed the criteria, they can use their OK Accreditation Mark. Broadcaster Julia Bradbury says, “As a lover of the outdoors I am aware of the harmful effects of the sun. We owe it to all children to make sure they are sun protected.” Ffi: W: www.oksunsafetycode.com

Generations of farming fun A wry smile breaks across Rob Jewell’s face as he describes how the children who used to visit St Augustines Farm are now bringing their own offspring to meet the animals, 25 years after he and his wife Elaine first opened their gates to visitors. “It makes me feel old when mums and dads tell me they used to come as children,” laughs the fifth generation farmer. “We opened officially in 1988 although the farm then and now is very different.” The Jewells have a special school room but their real aim is for children to enjoy themselves, whether whizzing around on toy tractors in the play barn or running outdoors in the meadow. A walk past the animal paddocks brings you to Hamalot with the Magic Table camera obscura and the farm has a model cow for children to have a go at milking. “We have really enjoyed watching generations of children have a fun introduction to life on the farm,” says Rob.

Call your local centre now to arrange a free five day trial (subject to terms and conditions).

At the SoleLution shoe shops in Portishead and Clifton Village the staff understand the pain of shopping for school shoes. These few tips will make it less painful! • Please be patient! This is a busy time for SoleLution, which gives each family the best possible service, including those ahead! • Go prepared! If you need them, SoleLution stocks socks. • Your child’s feet should grow over the summer, so it’s not advisable to buy early in the holidays. • No challenge is too great! The shop stocks a wide range of brands and widths, including Start-rite, Hush Puppies, Ricosta and Geox. • Ask your child to wear them around the house and keep the box and receipt. If you’ve any concerns, pop back in for another check. • Once everyone’s happy, put on some polish and wear them in. Remember, after six weeks in trainers or sandals they won’t like school shoes at first.

A Tyntesfield summer of action • A stone’s throw away from Bristol, Tyntesfield offers glorious gardens, wild woodland and acres of space to explore and relax. You also don’t want to miss the chance to discover the much-loved home of the Gibbs family, too. Throughout the school holidays you’ll be able to complete your National Trust ‘50 Things to do Before You are 11 3/4’ list, with a great series of outdoor challenges, including holding a scary beast, tree climbing, wild art and even rock climbing. The house also provides a few loud bangs as it steps back in time to the late 18th century with the living history event ‘Revolution!’ over the Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. Cannons and muskets are at the ready as the Redcoats defend the American colonies. Soldier schools - a chance to see if you can make it in the King’s army - will be running throughout the day. This event is part of the house’s ongoing theme, “From the ordinary to the extraordinary” as it brings to life and reveals fascinating objects from the National Trust’s largest recorded collection. For a gentler pace of life join Tyntesfield for outdoor theatre, as it welcomes The Chapter House Theatre Company performing ‘The Jungle Book’ or the critically acclaimed Pantaloons and its ‘History of Britain’. Good fats provide brain fuel • Omega-3 fatty acids aren’t called the good fats for no reason. These long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids actually play a role in almost every cell of our bodies, especially the brain which is 60% fat, believe it or not! Dietitian and expert in child nutrition Dr Carrie Ruxton says, “Previous studies have shown the right combination of Omega-3 and -6 not only supports brain function but can also aid a good night’s sleep, both of which are important for getting the most out of classroom learning. “The best source of these fats is from oily fish such as mackerel, pilchards and sardines,” she says. “Overall consumption of oily fish especially in young people is well below what it should be, so supplements have a major role to play in boosting Omega-3 intakes.” A daily fish oil supplement can help to bridge a nutritional gap. Look for one containing a specific ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with GLA (gamma linolenic acid) such as Equazen eye q, which provides a perfectly balanced intake of these essential nutrients. A formulation of Omega-3 fish oil and Omega-6, Equazen eye q is sold throughout pharmacies, supermarkets and health food stores nationwide. Ffi: W: www.equazen.co.uk

Seasonal family activities include ‘Summer in the Kitchen’ and ‘Summer in the Greenhouse’. An interactive map shows what’s being grown in Bristol and beyond, where you can let At-Bristol know about your gardening efforts. Whether it’s a window box with tomatoes or a large allotment, the centre wants to know about it to see what a nation of growers we are. There will be lots of things that you can physically take home with you, as well as technology that allows you to save photos and experiments, which you can access online from home. Read all about it!

In the excitement of the long holidays there’s a danger children will forget their reading skills. Ellen White explains how to avoid the ‘summer slip’.

I

n today’s digitised world, when many children have mastered using a tablet or smartphone by the time they reach primary school, the pleasures of a good book can be forgotten over the summer holidays. Where once existed a whole extra bag for holiday reading, there’s now frequently just the cold glow of a computer screen. Teachers even have a name for it, “the summer slip”. Research from the Institute of Public Policy Research has found that a long summer break can impede children’s learning in both English and Maths, while educational charity The Reading Agency reveals that reading for pleasure is more important to children’s successes than education or social class. All the evidence suggests it’s vital to encourage good reading habits. As Nicola Levison, a teacher at Hotwells Primary, Bristol, confirms, “Children’s reading does drop off a bit in the summer, but if children are engrossed in a series of books then that interest is sustained as they are spurred on to read the next one.” She suggests

active parent participation. “When the time pressures of school are eased, you could re-read loved books together. Introduce kids to books you loved as a child and make it a shared, pleasurable experience.” Summer can be a busy time juggling work, family holidays and childcare, but there is plenty of help at hand. The Summer Reading Challenge is a nationwide event run by Arts Council England specifically aimed at addressing this problem. Children aged 4 to 11 are encouraged to read six books over eight weeks, with prize incentives, a medal and certificate for completing the challenge. This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’, encouraging children to focus on stories about myths, legends and monsters. For those children who struggle to engage with reading, this is a great way to take pressure off curriculum-based targets and discover the fun in reading. Just 20 minutes per day can be enough to prevent a significant dip in your child’s reading development over the summer months.

Top reading tips • Organise a fun day out centred on choosing new books at a library or bookshop: many charity bookshops have great children’s sections. • Organise a book swap with other parents and children in the area. • Is there a film your child loves to watch? There’s a strong chance it’s adapted from a novel. So whether it’s Harry Potter or Disney, encourage your child to discover the book behind the film. • Don’t dismiss comics or graphic novels. They’re an exciting and accessible introduction to the written word. • If the only way you can get them to read is on a Kindle or tablet, don’t despair. Any form of reading is better than none but set parental blocks to avoid online distractions.

he transition from primary to secondary school can be daunting for both children and their parents. Going from being the big fish in the small pond, to the littlest fish in a big pond is, of course, an upheaval for children. Suddenly, they are faced with a school uniform change, new timetables, more homework and, often, several large buildings to navigate. But, this change doesn’t necessarily have to be as difficult as it sounds. Secondary schools recognise that this is a challenging period for children and do as much as they can to make the new arrivals feel at home. For example, many now offer taster days and welcome evenings so that new pupils and parents start to feel comfortable in their new academic home. Although it might seem a momentous event, it can be easily managed one step at a time. Inspiring a positive attitude towards starting secondary school really begins in the Year 6 classroom. Elaine Jackson, acting head of SS Peter and Paul RC primary school in Bristol, says the school tries to create an atmosphere of positivity and confidence among its leavers. “Many pupils feel they are leaving friends behind when they

®

14 Avon Features Summer 2014.indd 13

leave primary school, but this is rarely the case,” says Elaine. She emphasises that parents play a key role in helping children to adjust to leaving primary school. For example, they can reassure children that they will maintain old friendships as well as making new ones at secondary school. Furthermore, parents can try to encourage a calm attitude in the children. “Children can be prone to hysteria in the midst of the end of term excitement,” she says. Emma Hinkins, head of Year 7 at The Red Maids’ School, Bristol, believes that the first half term is crucial to the integration of new pupils. “If the secondary school is prepared, it makes it a lot easier for pupils to settle in,” she says. Red Maids’ consequently holds most of its events for new Year 7s before the October half term. There are plenty of opportunities to integrate, both in school and in more informal settings. One of the main ways in which Red Maids’ helps pupils find their place is through a Big Girl system, under which new pupils are assigned a Big Girl,

a Year 8 pupil who helps them become familiar with the surroundings. This arrangement is intended to last throughout the girls’ time

Tips for a smooth transition • Make sure your child attends the open days and taster days in the run up to September. • Reassure your child at home that they are embarking on an exciting new chapter in their lives. • Find out if any other children from your child’s primary school are moving with them to the same secondary school. • Give it time. Children are unlikely to settle instantly, but becoming comfortable with secondary school can be a gradual process.

at school, so they often end up making a friend for life. Another way secondary schools settle in new pupils is through extra-curricular trips. At Red Maids’, bowling trips are organised within each tutor group during the first month of the school term. Parents are also invited to attend, promoting a feeling of community in the new group. At the end of the first half term, the school also organises a residential five-day trip to activity centre Kilve Court in Somerset for new pupils. Although the move from primary to secondary school may seem overwhelming at first, it is certainly manageable. While the school deals with many new pupils’ concerns in the classroom, there are many ways to help at home, such as making sure that your child is familiar with the layout of their new school, or going through the daily timetable with them.

Ellen White reviews the new releases.

Puffin revisited This summer, Puffin introduces a collection of timeless stories for a whole new generation of readers to discover. From ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ to ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘The Neverending Story’, parents are bound to recognise a forgotten favourite from their childhood. Classics which have stood the test of time, this series of tales will enchant and capture the hearts of today’s children. In Richard Adams’ ‘Watership Down’, the young rabbit Fiver has a sixth sense that something terrible is going to happen to his warren. Led by his brother Hazel, he and the few who believe him set off on a dangerous journey to find a new home. Adams’ language is rich and detailed, immersing the reader completely in the rabbits’ underground world. The rabbits’ language is often onomatopoeic; a ‘hrududu’ is a car for example, which helps the reader to see our world from a rabbit’s point of view. At just over six hundred pages, this is best suited for the more confident reader but there’s nothing to stop parents of Year 2 or 3 pupils reading it at bedtime – ideal for those long summer evenings. Meanwhile, ‘Trumpet of the Swan’ a lesser-known fable by E.B. White, author of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘Stuart Little’, explores the plight of Louis the trumpeter swan, who’s born without a voice. With the help of his human friend Sam, he learns to read and write instead but this doesn’t solve the problem of how to woo lovely swan Serena, until Louis’s father comes up with a solution which leads to adventures, fame and fortune. White tells the story predominantly from the perspective and inner thoughts of Louis as he struggles to come to terms with being different from the rest of his family. It’s a gentle, charming story with good length chapters for children growing more confident with reading

A Cutler above Jake Cutler is being chased by space pirates and he doesn’t know why. Saved by the crew of rusty old spaceship Dark Horse, he sets off on an adventure through the solar systems. Will he discover the truth about his past before the pirates catch up with him? Author Huw Powell ensures readers are swiftly hooked on the mystery of Jake’s origins. Delivered to a monastery as a baby by an enigmatic stranger, who destroyed his family ship, why does he wear a necklace of diamonds, emeralds and rubies? Space Jackers effectively weaves historical elements such as pirates and monks, with futuristic technology like hoverbikes and Jake’s computerised irises, creating a unique world with plenty to appeal to children’s interests. Chapters are easy to read and short enough to devour several in one session. Powell has written a self-contained story with a rounded conclusion, but the stage is set for the next adventure, Space Jackers: The Sword of Altus, for those who desire more cut-throat exploits. Island life Grace is excited about her holiday by the sea with Granny. She has a whole week to explore rock pools, collect shells and play on the beach, with no annoying little brothers to get in the way. Grace makes friends with local boy Col who knows all the secrets of the island, but when Grace finds an injured baby seal, can she do enough to help? Green conjures up a wonderful atmosphere; you can almost taste the salt in the air and smell the sea breeze as Grace embraces life on the tiny fishing island. What initially appears to be a simple summer tale effortlessly incorporates deeper issues such as death, grief and money troubles in a comforting and reassuring manner. Aided by charming charcoal illustrations, this is a tender story celebrating the importance of family and friendship. Seal Island Julia Green, £5.99, Oxford University Press, www.oup.com

More than she can chew? Astra and her family are travelling through space to a new home on Nova Mundi when she feels a little peckish. After all, 199 years in a freezer pod is a long time to go without food. When she asks the Nom-O-Tron computer for ‘something so delicious, it’s scary’, Astra gets more than she bargained for as an army of monster cakes are set loose, eating the spaceship and everything in it. It’s up to Astra and her robot friend, Pilbeam, to save the ship from destruction. Sarah McIntyre’s bold illustrations decorate almost every page, breaking up blocks of text for those reluctant or less confident readers. Astra is a likeable and engaging heroine, while the subject matter and cartoon illustrations bring just the right amount of silliness. A great book for children aged 7 and upwards to read alone and build up confidence to tackle more challenging reads.
