blast from the past We’re strolling down memory lane in honor of our 10th birthday this year. Here’s a look back at one of our early issues. our 10th issue: may 2013 Around here, May comes in like a…pop! It’s the month when we share big love for living in color. Eight years later, that orange banquette still rocks.

a decade of gardening and yardening

home stuff tells all No doubt life would be easier if things around the house could tell us how best to use them! For this column, we imagined a world in which everything from appliances to a carton of eggs spoke up. Says the microwave, “Close my door gently, please.” Slamming it could blow a fuse in the machine. GTK!

As satisfying as it is to grow pretty blooms, there’s the mulching, raking, and weeding that go with it. That’s why we’ve given the dirt on it all, including the coolest outdoor tools, fun new blooms for when you’re ready for a flower bed change-up, and the right time to water a lawn—5 a.m., or at least before breakfast.

that time you learned about gingerbread trim From the start, we’ve enjoyed explaining the architecture that makes houses unique. Knowing what halftimbering is or how a gambrel roof looks means it’s even more interesting to browse real estate listings, right? And when House Hunters is on, you’re quite the expert.

“Once I hung the art my kids and I painted, I had to bring my piano up to par. Vivid yellow is a great complement, like the sun with a rainbow. To preserve some original character, I left part of the front unpainted.” —Kristin Gambaccini, @kristingambaccini, Medina, OH

“My clients have an affinity for the ’60s and ’70s, so I picked this groovy orange for their daughters’ bedroom, or tangerine on steroids, as I call it. The color is just perfect for energetic kids. It goes playfully with the lemon and fuchsia pillows and makes the white bed pop.” —Jennifer Jones, @niche_interiors, San Francisco, CA

When depression sets you back,

Keep Moving Forward. Make an appointment to ask your doctor about adding REXULTI® (brexpiprazole) to your antidepressant.

Actor portrayals

When taken with an antidepressant, REXULTI was proven to reduce depression symptoms an extra 62% compared to the antidepressant alone.

ANTIDEPRESSANT

62% GREATER REDUCTION IN DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS

6 week study in adults, with ongoing symptoms of depression, still taking an antidepressant. Individual results may vary.

INDICATION:

REXULTI is a prescription medicine used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). REXULTI is used with antidepressant medicines, when your healthcare provider determines that an antidepressant alone is not enough to treat your depression. It is not known if REXULTI is safe and effective in people under 18 years of age.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Medicines like REXULTI can raise the risk of death in elderly people who have lost touch with reality (psychosis) due to confusion and memory loss (dementia). REXULTI is not approved for treating patients with dementia-related psychosis. Antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children, teenagers, or young adults within the first few months of treatment. Pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings and report such changes to the healthcare provider. This is very important when antidepressant medicine is started or when the dose is changed. REXULTI is approved only for adults 18 and over with depression. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following serious side effects: • Stroke in elderly people (cerebrovascular problems) that can lead to death. • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, changes in pulse, heart rate, and blood pressure as these may be symptoms of a rare but potentially fatal condition. • Uncontrolled body movements in your face, tongue or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia, TD). TD may become permanent, and may start after you stop taking REXULTI.

If you’re still feeling depressed after 2 months on an antidepressant, make an appointment to ask your doctor about adding REXULTI.

• Problems with your metabolism: High blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you have diabetes or risk factors for it, your healthcare provider should monitor your blood sugar. Increased fat levels (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood or weight gain. • Unusual urges. Some people taking REXULTI have had unusual urges, such as gambling, binge eating or eating that you cannot control (compulsive), compulsive shopping and sexual urges. • Low white blood cell count. • Decreased blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). • Seizures (convulsions) • Problems controlling your body temperature so that you feel too warm. Avoid getting over-heated or dehydrated while taking REXULTI. • Difficulty swallowing that can cause food or liquid to get into your lungs. The most common side effects of REXULTI include weight gain and an inner sense of restlessness such as feeling like you need to move. These are not all the possible side effects of REXULTI. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you’re taking, since there are some risks for drug interaction. Until you know how REXULTI affects you, do not drive, operate machinery or do dangerous activities. REXULTI may make you feel drowsy. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. This DIY caught our eye on Instagram, so we had to get the details.

The walls are painted Extra White by Sherwin-Williams and Azores by Benjamin Moore.

Paint formulated for leather saved a sad, stained vintage find.

A furry throw from IKEA and a pink pillow from Target turn a saucer chair into a total temptation.

Pre-painted stools from Serena & Lily add a boho vibe.

This vintage metal dresser, another fixerupper, was spraypainted white.

THE DIYER: Kelly Rinzema of @lilypadcottage “After my 13-year-old saw a YouTuber paint a leather bag, we tried it on a leather chair we found at an antiques store for $30. She liked the cool shape for her room, but it was filthy and had cigarette burns—very Mad Men. We got to work with dish soap, a Magic Eraser, and Challenger cleaner, then applied five thin layers of Angelus leather paint in white with a small angled brush. It’s become her favorite spot to FaceTime with friends.” 28 HGTV Magazine

HEAD NORTH! Legendary North Dakota

Whether you’re seeking the perfect destination for a road trip, searching for some family fun, or looking to get back to nature (or all three), North Dakota has it all. From outdoor adventures in national and state parks to vibrant urban hubs, it’s wide open, welcoming, and waiting for you.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park For amazing vistas, uncrowded adventures, and awe-inspiring views of wildlife, visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The park features three separate units, each offering a variety of experiences. The South Unit (the park’s largest) is known for its wildlife and wonder with hiking trails, ranger-led activities, and scenic drives. Medora, the gateway to the park, is a bustling town popular with families. The North Unit features the mostdramatic scenery in the park with the iconic River Bend Overlook and a breathtaking panorama at Oxbow Overlook. The Elkhorn Ranch Unit was the site of Roosevelt’s North Dakota home. Only the cabin’s foundation stones remain in this secluded spot that inspired the President’s commitment to conservation.

Discover North Dakota…

Magical Medora Area The gateway to the South Unit, this charming old west town and surrounding area is home to the state’s most visited attraction, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and so much more. From breathtaking trails to world-class golf to spectacular food and entertainment, Medora offers everything you want for a fun family adventure.

Bully Pulpit Golf Course Immerse yourself at one of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, chiseled out of the North Dakota Badlands.

Pitchfork Steak Fondue and Medora Musical Savor western-style steak and your favorite fixins atop a bluff overlooking the Badlands, then enjoy an outdoor show with the Burning Hills Singers, Coal Diggers Band, and a patriotic fireworks finale!

“My mom hung art everywhere and saved up for special pieces, and it taught me how important art is for decorating,” says Charlotte, NC, designer Ariene Bethea, whose mother collected African and Asian works. After inheriting a Bernhardt modular velvet sofa from her, Ariene knew just what to do: Hang a ’60s chinoiserie painting on silk above it.

Caitlin Wilson’s childhood home had a bit of a theme: “Mom had plaid drapes, plaid upholstery, and plaid pillows,” says the Dallas, TX, designer. “It felt Christmas-y to me then, but now I love how it easily mixes with other patterns and looks layered and chic. Using it around my home feels like a very refined, adult move.”

“We had the most beautiful collection of blue dishes when I was a kid,” says Orlando Soria, host of Build Me Up on discovery+. “When I helped my mom redo her kitchen, it needed a peacock blue island and light blue backsplash!” A chip off the old blue block, he went with aqua walls and a denim-hued bed in his Los Angeles home. “Blue feels both vibrant and soothing,” he says. Growing up, Courtney McLeod liked to duck into her mother’s room to check out the Buddha sculpture on her dresser. “It gave her a sense of calm,” she says. The New York City designer brought that zen to her own bedroom, with botanical Aux Abris wallpaper and a Buddha sculpture from an antiques store on her desk. “It brings me peace, too, and a closeness to my mom.”

Jessica Geller’s mother rarely sent her to her room—Jessica was already there, redecorating. “My mom is a creative type and she encouraged my urges to reposition my bed or hang floating shelves,” says the Essex Fells, NJ, designer. So when a Karl Springer table her mom passed along didn’t work in the dining room, an inventive solution came naturally. “Mom didn’t second-guess her!”

Nate and Jeremiah Brent, of Nate & Jeremiah: Starting Over on discovery+, created similar magic in their place in Los Angeles: “Nothing gives a room instant character like combining old and new pieces.”

“My mother always decorated with items she brought home from trips,” says Minneapolis, MN, designer Lucy Penfield, which made for great conversation pieces. “My favorite was a jewel-tone kimono that she hung from a bamboo rod.” Lucy did up her den in the same mode, with Mexican blankets as drapery and pillows from Guatemala. “They transport me back and make me happy. Retro Flair

Colorful appliances bring in a retro 1950s vibe. Go soft with the color since paler shades can be easier to live with long term.

Paint it Pretty

Paint is a clever way to bring visual interest into the kitchen. The lower cabinets are a soft pink, which balances out all the blue. If I ever tire of them, I can easily change them to a fresh hue.

Have fun with functional decor! I have open shelving where I organize my cookbooks and cute dishes. They add a pop of color to the space and aren’t a big commitment color-wise.

an empty bird’s nest that’s on your house?

GETTY IMAGES

Yep, it’s breeding season for starlings and house sparrows, a.k.a. “pest birds,” who like to settle down in nooks and crannies. If there are no eggs or babies inside a nest, you won’t ruffle any feathers by removing it, says John Rowden, a senior director at the National Audubon Society. (Ditching active nests of native birds like cardinals and robins, however, is illegal.) Wear disposable gloves and put down a tarp to catch detritus. To discourage a rebuild, consider hanging a deterrent, such as shiny discs designed to startle birds, or wind chimes. Repeat nest removal as necessary until they take the hint and relocate.

how bad is it to run cold water on a hot pan? As you may have known deep down whenever you’ve heard that sizzle: It’s not good. “Dousing a hot pan with cold water can reduce its life span,” says Aeriel MurphyLeonard, Ph.D., assistant professor of materials science and engineering at The Ohio State University. Metal expands when heated, then shrinks back to size once it naturally cools. When its temperature drops suddenly and drastically, however, it causes thermal shock. Done repeatedly, this can lead to warping, wobbliness that creates instability on burners, and cold/hot spots that make food cook unpredictably. You can get a pan to room temp a bit faster by setting it on a wire rack Guess what? or stone trivet. Ultimately, your It’s SO GOOD patience will pay off—better a to clean a burnt bit of kitchen clutter today than pan with salt ruined omelets forever. and lemon. It depends on how heavy duty it is, and the condition of your teeth. Whitening pastes contain abrasive ingredients that basically sand away stains and their strength varies (check with your dentist about your go-to kind, or google “toothpaste abrasion chart” for comparisons). “Medium- to lower-abrasion toothpastes are considered safe for everyday use,” says Salvatore Lotardo, D.D.S., president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. “But using a very abrasive toothpaste indefinitely could present a risk to teeth over time, especially if your dentist has said that your enamel is starting to wear away.” Potential problems include weakened enamel and tooth sensitivity. If any of these crop up, shelve the whitening stuff until you see the dentist.

how bad is it to skip a flea treatment for an indoor cat?

Ha, I win! You can’t defeat if you don’t pretreat.

Every sweet kitty needs a defense against the little buggers. “Some people think cats are protected if they stay inside, but it’s possible for fleas and ticks to get into a house,” says Lauren Demos, D.V.M., chief veterinary officer at pettable.com. Both have been known to hitch rides on people’s clothes, or arrive on the fur of other pets. Flea bites can lead to anemia in cats, while they and ticks can harbor diseases that infect humans, too. “Prevention is far easier than getting rid of these parasites, which can live for a long time,” says Dr. Demos. Rather than heading to the store for meds, have your vet write a prescription—some kitties are resistant to over-the-counter stuff, and a prescribed treatment can target multiple stages of a pest’s life cycle.

SUPER BAD!

tile needs to be straightened

crooked over here, too

Go right ahead, as long as you’ve given them the opp to fix the issue. “When it’s clear the person lacks the skills or time to do a job properly, it’s fair to talk about adjusting the amount you will pay for their services,” says Susan Grant, a director at the Consumer Federation of America. Get an estimate from a repair pro who comes recommended for the cost of redoing the job. Then let the original pro know that their work doesn’t meet a reasonable standard of quality (avoid saying stuff like doesn’t meet my expectations” since that sounds subjective). Tell them you’ve researched the cost to correct it and that you’d like to deduct that from their fee. If the fix will run as much or more, Grant says, “it’s acceptable to expect them to forgo the fee entirely—or to ask for a full refund if you’ve paid.” Should you hit a brick wall and aren’t game to cut your losses, reach out to your local or state consumer protection agency to mediate. Small claims court is your last resort.

W

hat do you get when you take a historic East Coast home and fill it with exhilarating color, pattern, and a little cheekiness? “George Washington meets George Michael,” says Eva Amurri, whose partly traditional, partly eccentric style radiates all over her place in Westport, CT. After buying the 1840s Victorian, the lifestyle blogger spent almost a year bringing it up to date for her and her three young kids. To-dos included smoothing the heavily textured walls for a current look, refinishing the wood floors and replacing boards where needed (some were almost 200 years old!), and opening up the kitchen to the living room for a more casual space. Eva worked with designer Prudence Bailey to merge the spirit of the old home with her family’s energy. Says Eva, “The look is a nod to the past, a nod to what the house has been, and an air-kiss to the future.”

Art from Sonder Living is graphic and classic.

living room Eva dared to do a white sofa, by Taylor Burke Home, as a base for the room’s pops of color. “It’s performance velvet that doesn’t stain—and my kids have tried,” she says. Small-but-mighty detail: The lilac trim of the citron swivel chair (also by Taylor Burke Home) matches the drapes (made with fabric by Schumacher). Sheepskin benches bring texture and glam.

kitchen The contrast of the blue-black island (painted Soot by Benjamin Moore) and the marble countertop gives the room that wow feeling in a timeless sort of way. “Our island is the heart of our home—it draws us to it like a magnet!” says Eva. “Rattan stools, by Palecek, and elongated hexagon tiles installed vertically bring in modern flair,” says designer Prudence. The pendants are by The Urban Electric Co.

reading nook This was once an itty-bitty office that Eva dreamed into a “snuggle nook,” as her family calls it. “We use it every single day,” she says. Proving you can be maximalist in the miniest spot, a bold, colorful wallpaper by Flat Vernacular coexists gorgeously with the black-and-white daybed cushion fabric by Brunschwig & Fils. Abstract drape and bolster fabric by Kravet balance them out.

mateo’s bedroom Tiger wallpaper in a nursery is pretty wild, but the Flat Vernacular design is right in keeping with the home’s uninhibited style. Eva continued the theme with jungle green drapes by Loom Decor and a mossy name sign from Custom Botanique. Mateo’s current favorite activity: taking plush animals in and out of the baskets. “It’s the only time I get anything done,” says Eva.

Their Berkeley, CA, reno was over a decade in the making—and worth the wait.

S

ome people have wanderlust and move every few years. Others buy houses they can see themselves in for the long haul—exactly how Joanne Hagopian and John Eknoian felt when they got their 1927 Dutch Colonial in Berkeley, CA. It was a good size (2,100 square feet), with a big yard to boot. Less lovely: All the floors, windows, and plumbing had to be replaced; the second story needed reconfiguring; and the finishes were older than old.

“But we got busy raising a family and overwhelmed by decisions,” says Joanne. “We even back-burnered fixing a hole in the living room ceiling after a leak.” Twelve years in, they hired a contractor and tapped designer Ellen Nystrom. The pieces and palette chosen play up the couple’s fondness for mid-century style and, bonus, their alma mater: “We couldn’t resist UCLA blue and yellow,” says Joanne. Now that it’s done, they’re really never leaving!

A classic combo: cream clapboard and navy trim (Elmira White and Deep Royal, both by Benjamin Moore). Joanne and John with, from top left, Olivia, 17, and twins Thomas and Isabel, 13

dining room Just like this family, the Shaker-style table was staying put. “It’s the first nice piece of furniture I ever bought,” says Joanne. The couple had it refinished to remove a burn mark from a longago Christmas candle mishap, and designer Ellen refreshed it with chairs upholstered in burnt orange fabric. Neutral drapes let the sunburst wallpaper by Thibaut on the ceiling shine.

kitchen The old setup was lose-lose-lose: Dated, dreary, and so small that, says Joanne, “John felt crowded when he was in there alone!” Reshuffling cabinetry opened it up and made room for an island. Yellow subway tiles by Fireclay play off the warmth of the walnut butcher-block island top and floors, enhanced by deep blue lower cabinets and sea-glasshued Bover pendants over the sink.

main bedroom Washed-out green walls, hand-medown curtains, and the mattress on a box spring had to go. “Our space was chaotic, which I suppose reflected the chaos of having three kids,” Joanne says. Putting in a stylish bed (it’s from Pottery Barn), a rich wall color, and pretty Roman shades made with Pindler fabric makes the room feel put together. Above the bed, beaded necklaces from a trip to Africa bring back memories of a favorite vacation.

Innovative features, low-key luxe: The HGTV Smart Home 2021 is the coolest one yet. Sneak a peak right here.

f

rom a shower you can turn on by voice command to outdoor living spaces that beckon 24/7, the HGTV Smart Home 2021 in Naples, FL, is the total package. “It’s like the house is working for you, and you’re just here on vacation!” says HGTV designer Tiffany Brooks of the approximately 2,500-square-foot place. She went all out with resort style—a crisp navy, black, and white palette; pieces with posh feels; and lots of greenery that nods to the state’s lush Everglades. “Before I designed each room,” says Tiffany, “I’d ask myself, What do I need in here to live smarter, better, happier?” Genius! Step in, look around, and, of course, chill out.

kitchen SMART IDEAS The island’s Wi-Fi-enabled Kohler faucet spouts water on demand. “No more standing around waiting for the macaroni pot to fill up,” says Tiffany. A wireless charging station built into the Corian countertop keeps food prep and homework humming along. GOOD LOOKS A backsplash with geometric porcelain tile from TileBar dazzles, while chic stools with rectangular backs from Ashley HomeStore play it up even more.

four seasons room SMART IDEAS This hangout has two types of automated floor-to-ceiling enclosures from Phantom Screens—mesh screens and vinyl, to protect from pests and rain showers. GOOD LOOKS For breeziness, Tiffany put in wicker seats from Ashley HomeStore and nautical-vibe pillows. The spot opens up to approximately 550 square feet of outdoor space, built with Trex decking. Also part of the fun: a sleek mini kitchen, complete with a pizza oven.

living room SMART IDEAS With a remote-controlled electric fireplace by Napoleon that has four flame colors and custom drapes on a motorized rod by Somfy, this room is total stay-here-allday temptation. GOOD LOOKS “I chose colors that represent the sand and the sea,” says Tiffany. There’s even pearlescent tile on the fireplace that resembles seashells.

athy Hutton is all about mixing things up at work and at home. As a designer and co-owner of a decor store in Houston, TX, with her daughter, Courtney, she regularly blends styles. When it came time for a kitchen redo, she and her husband, Robbie—high school sweethearts who reconnected 35 years later—did the same in their New Ulm, TX, farmhouse. “We liked the original feel but wanted a fun twist,” says Cathy. They also needed more room for their combined families. After enclosing the back porch and knocking down a couple of walls, they enhanced some of the existing details and stirred things up with blue paint (Adirondack Blue by Behr) on the cabinets and unexpected touches, such as a snazzy backsplash. It came together beautifully…just like their families have.

Antique corbels (there’s one on the other side, too) are a cool way to frame a doorway.
