WHEN REAL LIVING EDITOR (and my brilliant friend) Elle Lovelock asked me to take the reins of this magazine for six months, I felt excitement, gratitude and, yes, nerves. Elle is a talented woman with classic taste and she leaves very chic shoes to fill. While she begins a new role as mum to a beautiful boy, I’ll be here, welcoming you to delight in the pages of a mag I’ve known and loved for years – I got my start at real living as an intern almost a decade ago. Well, that’s enough about me… let’s talk about colour. From beautiful peach-hued interiors (p126) to a home with a modern blue scheme (p122), we’re showing off spaces that forgo neutral palettes for ideas that push boundaries. More than ever we must take care and play it safe in daily life, so let’s give ourselves permission to try our dream decorating looks. If you’re not sure how to pull off your favourite colour combination or you need a little shopping inspiration, turn to our styling with colour shoot on p109. If you can’t remember the last time you took a holiday, consider the staycations and out-of-town escapes around Australia. Take the recently redesigned retreat in Berowra Waters on p147. Just an hour from Sydney, it’s an example of an on-your-doorstep getaway that makes you stop and truly appreciate local design and our natural landscape. This month, we’re taking a moment to acknowledge the women who inspire us, so we asked four influential creative mothers to share what’s on their shopping wishlists (p92). If, like me, there are a few new mums in your life, you’ll find the most gorgeous gift ideas. So, whether you’re beginning a new chapter or you’re inspired to turn a decorating dream into a reality, I hope you enjoy this issue.

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED AUSTRALIAN fashion designer Heidi Middleton worked in advertising as an art director before she joined forces with a local friend, Sarah-Jane Clarke, and started making clothes. In 1999, they launched what was to become a cult label: Sass & Bide. Within 10 years it had become an international fashion empire. In 2003, when the business was in full flight, Heidi began house-hunting around the Palm Beach peninsula of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The sunny 1940s home she found provided Heidi with a vital counterpoint to the increasing demands of the business. By 2011, Heidi and Sarah-Jane were ready for a change. They sold the controlling share of their company and in 2014, they stepped out of it altogether. Heidi and her family, including two young daughters, moved to France for a 12-month sabbatical. During a weekend in the Médoc region of south-western France visiting their friends Mimi and Oddur Thorrison, they went house-hunting. Mimi was a great ambassador for the area and “really sold the region to us”, recalls Heidi. “It’s wild and rugged, but there is a poetry and romance to the landscape and the old villages.” They went to see an 1830s manor house, Les Tourelles, A @reallivingmag

in Saint-Christoly-Médoc that Mimi had described as ‘a rough diamond’. The five-bedroom home was set on three hectares and included an orchard, a small vineyard, a dairy and barn. Despite having been uninhabited for several years and feeling somewhat derelict, its foundations were strong and it had elegant proportions, with turrets framing the facade and interiors with four-metre high ceilings. For Heidi, the potential for transformation was intoxicating. They made an offer and three days later owned the home. After a year of renovating and a second year filling the new home with friends, family, love and creativity, the future looked bright: “I remember thinking I needed to surround myself with great people, good food and flowers. I decided that every mealtime I’d light candles, have music playing and cook for the girls.” Today, having relocated back to Sydney, Heidi’s started a new business called ArtClub. ArtClub is located in Surry Hills, in the heart of the city, and the company has a wonderful buzz and energy. Heidi continues to adjust her life to find the right rhythm and flow, and by living with an open heart and expressing her inner world through art, fashion, poetry and interiors, she has become an inspiring example to like-minded women around the world. @reallivingmag

AN ENVIRONMENTALIST, A DESIGNER AND A MAKE-UP ARTIST walk into a bar. Confessionally, this wasn’t the original story that brought together the founding trio behind bold new beauty brand, Flavedo & Albedo, although it would have made for a colourful inception. Instead, Emily Perrett, Aleks Allen and Toby Norris were united over a mutually consuming guilt. “It was an idea that wouldn’t go away,” recalls Emily, who took the leap from creative agencies to launch the plastic-free brand in November 2019. “I’ve always loved makeup, but was becoming increasingly freaked-out by plastic landfill and all the custom packaging that I loved, combined with the very low recycling rates.” With a mounting concern for the damage beneath the surface, the clever triad found the problem began with packaging. “We couldn’t find much that was terribly exciting in the sustainable space. There was always a big compromise needed, either on the aesthetic or performance,” says Toby, who has worked on the design and packaging for brands including Burberry Beauty, Jo Malone and Toni & Guy. “Most design processes are aesthetically driven. We thought that was a design problem we’d like to have a crack at.” Delving beneath the surface is a sentiment that sits at the core of Flavedo & Albedo’s ethos. “Flavedo is the technical term for the skin of a citrus fruit, and the albedo is the white pith on the inside,” Toby says of the brand’s fruition. “That combination made sense to us. Make-up should be about more than what looks good on the outside; it’s also about what’s happening inside.” Experimenting with confectionery hues and daring pigments came naturally to the co-founders, who grew up in an era marked by palette-pushing beauty looks. “As a kid, I loved going through Mum’s make-up drawers to see what she had, what was new and what I could play with. Growing up in the ’90s meant she never had a shortage of colour. It was paradise,” Aleks says of one source of inspiration behind the brand’s vibrant, high-performance sets, which include eyeshadows, eyeliners and lip and cheek tints. While combating the plastic pollution from an industry that currently produces a disturbing 76.8 billion plastic packaging units a year (Flavedo & Albedo uses zero plastic in its packaging), the team also have other ideas to strip the cosmetic industry bare. “I want to show more real faces, real skin textures and real looks. It’d be great if the conversation was less about what’s ‘wrong’ with our faces, and more about having a great time getting dressed up when you want to,” Emily says. “I love the idea of make-up being an extension of someone’s style, rather than a ‘corrective’ tool.” R
FROM TOP RIGHT Line up Flavedo & Albedo’s vegan wax-based Bright Stripe eyeliners ($27 each) come in a range of daring hues. Second skin “Good beauty products are the antithesis of fast fashion – there is long life in their versatility,” Toby Norris says of the multipurpose range. Triptych talent Co-founders Emily Perrett, Toby and Aleks Allen launched their brand in November 2019. Future vision Having implemented instrumental production changes to packaging and shipping, Flavedo & Albedo continues to work with its community of consumers for innovative feedback. OPPOSITE Artful activism The Dew Tint Toffee lip and cheek tint ($44) comes in a recyclable aluminium pot. “In five years’ time we want to prove to the beauty industry that you can design beautiful and desirable products without the plastic,” Toby says. real living

MODERN HIS T ORY
1926
photography courtesy of cult
Danish designer Verner Panton was born in 1926. In the 1960s he gained recognition for his avant-garde furniture, lighting and interiors. Among them: Spiegel Publishing house building in Hamburg (above) and the Flowerpot VP1 lamp (far left).
FLORALS WERE THE BIGGEST TREND of 1968. A symbol of the anti-war movement, protesters distributed flowers at marches, bands wrote songs about them, students wore them in their hair and in Denmark, they were the namesake of an exciting new lighting design – the Flowerpot lamp. The lamp was the flower child of designer Verner Panton, an architecture graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Though he was at the forefront of mid-century Danish modern design, Verner’s approach was relentlessly original and more experimental than his contemporaries, including his mentor Arne Jacobsen. Verner’s psychedelic ideas raised eyebrows at first, but his use of strong colours, graphic shapes and new materials was a perfect match for the revolutionary social climate of the ’60s and ’70s. Verner began to receive international critical acclaim in 1967 when he presented the Panton chair, an S-shape seat produced from a single piece of plastic, and a year later he launched the Flowerpot, a playful new light fixture comprised of two semicircle spheres. The shiny enamel structure may have been quite simple, but with its modern curves, gentle glow and the wide range of bright colours, the lamp bloomed. The beauty of the Flowerpot is its ability to thrive in just about any environment. The collection consists of several models including pendants and table lamps, and they feel equally at home suspended above a dining table, displayed on a living room console or in one of Verner’s psychedelic interior designs. Take the Speigel headquarters, an office building in Hamburg, Germany, which features immersive colour schemes, three-dimensional wall cladding, radical textiles and clusters of Flowerpot pendants hanging from the ceilings like overgrown vines with big shining bulbs. Thanks to its enduring appeal, the lamp was reissued by design company &Tradition decades after its release and this year, &Tradition debuted a cordless, compact design. The Flower Power movement may be gone, but Verner’s lamp is still spreading the love and creating good vibes. If the Flowerpot were a plant, it would surely be a perennial. R
1968
A paragon of Verner Panton’s futuristic approach to design, the Flowerpot lamp launched in 1968. Pictured is the VP3 table lamp, which features the two iconic hemispheres facing each other.
2010
Established in 2010, Danish company &Tradition produces new furnishings and reissues design icons such as the Flowerpot, which is available in several models, including the VP4 table lamp (left).
2021
This year, &Tradition released the VP9 table lamp, a new portable Flowerpot. Available through Cult in Australia, the lightweight model is equipped with a USB charger and comes in a variety of colours.

Created by Biasol Studio, the interiors and branding were developed in unison to reflect a fun, youthful and retro-cool vibe. “We were asked to create a feel-good space for the local community, serving up good coffee, healthy food and to bring back ’80s old-school vibes,” says interior designer Jean-Pierre Biasol. “We conceived Billie Buoy as a 1980s character who was radical, hip and a little offbeat.” Cobalt blue is splashed across every surface, punctuated with slashes of hot pink and stainless steel, taking style cues from fashion and graphics typical of the 1980s. Terrazzo, mosaic tiles, rendered walls and felt upholstery supply depth, richness and variation to the monochromatic blue scheme, while brick flooring grounds the space. Custom-made neon lights amplify the energy of the cafe. Occupying a coveted corner location in Essendon, Billie Buoy boasts a strong street presence thanks to the large glass windows that provide clientele with a sneak peek inside, reminiscent of an American diner. Banquette seating designed by Biasol Studio sits at the entrance, which flows onto the bar area and rear dining room beyond, via an arched tunnel. “The arch is a distinctive feature throughout Billie Buoy,” Jean-Pierre says. “Its geometric curvature reduces the height of the ceiling in places and softens the junction between ceiling and wall.” R real living

WITH ITS CENTRAL COURTYARD, GOTHIC ARCHES, frescoed halls and majolica tiles, the home of Gaia Trapani, her husband Pietro and their two children is characterful, to say the least. Located on the top floor of Palazzo Pantelleria, a 16th century building in the Sicilian city of Palermo, the apartment strikes a harmonic balance between historic preservation and modern minimalism. “We wanted city-centre accommodation with historical character and we found it here,” Gaia says. FAMILY AFFAIR Gaia and her sister Lycia own architecture firm Lyga Studio, so naturally they took on the challenge of renovating Palazzo Pantelleria together, a project that took a year to complete. Step one was to reveal the original ceiling frescoes hidden beneath layers of old paint, and to restore the architecture. “We conservatively restored the ceiling frescoes, while maintaining the stratifications of the various artistic periods, and recovering only the most significant and evident damage,” Gaia says. “The stunning majolica and cement tiles and large original fixtures were refurbished by local artisans. We also added a wall to separate the main living area from our private rooms. Two distinct areas were created, one of which is totally dedicated to the children.” TRUE COLOURS The true jewel in this home’s crown is the sisters’ use of colour. The walls throughout the house are awash with hues of blue and grey, while the mezzanine framing of the home office and the children’s furniture are coated in lobster red. Powder pink appears in their son and daughter’s quarters and the dining room kitchenette, while touches of gold, brass and timber pop up unexpectedly to provide warmth and texture. Much of the furniture is constructed from lacquered iron in similar tones, and subtly nods to the minimalistic style of Nordic design. Together, with artistic photographs and abstract landscapes on display, the interior scheme lightens the weight of the majestic historic architecture without visually competing with it. New digs Eager to make use of her new weekender in the Mornington Peninsula, owner and interior designer Carole Whiting gave the place a quick refresh. “I painted the floorboards Dulux ‘Grey Pebble’ halfstrength,” she tells. “It softens the look of the house.” She replaced the old fireplace with a white Jotul model from Wignells and added Nikari chairs from KFive + Kinnarps, a Scout House sofa from eBay, a Salsa Jamaica rug from Halcyon Lake, Euroluce ‘Tab’ floor light and Society Inc pendant. WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER CAROLE WHITING needs a break from her busy life in Melbourne, she heads for the hills – Red Hill to be exact. “It’s like shaking off my week and putting on some old slippers,” she says of coming home to the cottage that she purchased last year, just prior to Covid lockdowns. “It was perfect timing, as property prices in the area have gone crazy since then,” Carole adds. “And as it turned out, the next door neighbour was an old friend.” SPATIAL AWARENESS Carole was enamoured with the cottage’s pitched ceilings and lining board walls, but the wet areas “were a dud”, she admits. “They were poky with too many doors, and if you sat on the toilet with the door open, you were looking down the dining table!” She did some rearranging, using space from a walk-in robe to enlarge the kitchen, combining the laundry and shower room into a generous bathroom and converting that awkward toilet into a mudroom. The process took about six weeks. “I wanted the house finished quickly so I could have the benefit of it,” Carole says. THE PERFECT MIX Mindful of time, she filled the cottage with pieces that were close at hand. “Some items came from eBay, others were bought on clearance and some pieces were from a stash in my garage,” she tells. The sizeable dining table was cobbled together from old tabletops and paired with chairs “from all sorts of places”, and Carole made use of Frequent Flyer points to purchase small appliances, bedlinen, towels, pots and pans. The colour palette of neutral whites and timbers, with black accents and the odd touch of pale blue, instantly calms and rejuvenates the senses. “The whole house is designed not to challenge you too hard so you can just relax and take it easy,” Carole explains. SWEET RETREAT Unsurprisingly, she and her Poochon pup Fred head down to the property every chance they get. Days are filled with lazy sleep-ins, pottering in the garden, sitting at the table with friends or swinging in the hammock on the outside deck. “When I’m here, I find I can totally relax and get the absolute most out of my weekends,” Carole says. R
Easy living Carole decorated simply and efficiently, sourcing items from a few favourite suppliers. An artwork by Marise Maas fills the wall, while a woven tray from Pan After and cake stand from House serve as homely touches. Welcome party The cottage’s front door (opposite; painted Dulux ‘Black Gloss’) is always open to visitors. “It’s a great house for entertaining – lowkey and easy,” Carole says. The table was pieced together using Muuto tabletops and Ikea trestle legs, with a mix of Mattiazzi ‘Osso’ stools from District, a Temperature Design ‘Ercol’ love seat and chairs from Hay and Design Nation for seating.

Clean sweep What was once a separate toilet is now a mudroom, accessed via the bathroom and dining area. “You need somewhere for coats and boots in Red Hill!” Carole says. Fatboy wall hooks from Finnish Design Shop provide handy hanging storage, as does the bathroom’s heated towel rail from Oblica. Stow away Carole found a freestanding cupboard on eBay and painted it Dulux ‘Black Spur’. It’s used to house the kitchen flatware, while a wire basket from Fog Linen and artwork by Eleanor Millard are displayed on top. Work of art The tiled bench (opposite), custom made by Ashwood Design using DTiles from Mondo Piero, is one of Carole’s favourite features. “I set my joiners a challenge and they totally aced it,” she says. how to decorate quickly and inexpensively
1
Use what you have. Spare tableware or linen, mismatched furniture and items in storage can all be utilised in a holiday home. Try growing plants from cuttings.
2
Be a savvy shopper. Use loyalty points, buy items on sale and attend auctions for great bargains. Local freecycle groups are another handy resource.
3
Carole painted her floors rather than replacing them, which saved money and time. Likewise, old furniture can be revived with a coat or two of paint.
4
Keep it simple. The less stuff you have, the less money you spend, plus there’s less tidying and maintenance involved – and don’t we all love that!
Full steam ahead With no access to gas, Carole opted for a V-Zug combi-steam oven and induction cooktop. “It’s the first time I’ve used a steam oven and I’m converted,” she says. The stylish Whispair ‘Paris’ island rangehood blends in seamlessly with the Hi-Macs benchtops by Laminex and walls painted Dulux ‘Lexicon Quarter’. A bell by a local ceramicist hangs in the corner, while an artwork by August Carpenter and black tray from Cult decorate the space. Doors open from the kitchen to the deck – “I’ve spent many hours doing nothing on that deck,” Carole says. A

HOMEOWNER PAM WILLIAMS WAS FED UP with the Portland apartment she bought after she became widowed. The building had great bones, but its conversion in the ’90s from a warehouse to residential lofts had been completed cheaply. “The inexpensive floorboards, linoleum bathroom floor, flimsy windowsills and poor lighting all called for change,” Pam tells. She considered selling – until she saw a neighbour’s apartment that local firm Jessica Helgerson Interior Design had renovated. “It was clear to Pam that our aesthetic instincts were aligned,” says Mira Eng-Goetz, a lead designer at JHID. WORDS OF WISDOM “Pam came to us with a lot of trust,” Mira says. Instead of enforcing a set of practical criteria or providing a list of specific materials and objects to be used, Pam simply gave JHID five words that described her ideal home: ‘serene’, ‘whimsical’, ‘flexible’, ‘consistent’ in form and materials and ‘accommodating’ of her personal situation and age. “I loved this approach,” Mira confirms. “It was clear and yet it allowed for a lot of creative freedom.” FIRM FOUNDATIONS Mira and her team were smitten with the loft’s rough-sawn wooden beams, concrete floors, large windows and brick walls, but the mid ’90s additions needed to go. “The new material palette is relatively simple,” she tells. “We exposed all the brick that we could, polished the concrete floors, painted all the wood in one soft, neutral colour and layered on a lot of one-by-one-inch porcelain tiles set in a straight grid.” Then, they added “super-comfy” furniture pieces and textiles. The result, she says, is “a soft, sculptural look that’s inviting, soothing and a little quirky – just like Pam.” INNER PEACE The emotional centrepiece of the apartment is a rainy-day nook that doubles as a guest bedroom. “The wall-to-wall wool carpeting, lowered ceiling and deep built-in sofa with quilted upholstery help this space feel cosy,” Mira says. “In Portland, where much of the year is drizzly, it’s nice to have a nook like this to retreat to.” Pam says it embodies the serenity she requested. The loft now feels like a true home. “At last, I’ve made the most of what I’ve got,” she says. R

how to enhance an industrial loft
1
Lower a section of the ceiling to create a cocooning space, as the design team did in this home. Dropping the ceiling in one area will also emphasise the high ceilings elsewhere.
2
Soften boxy rooms with corner sofas, throws and accent lighting, or use furniture to divide a large room into zones without compromising the overall sense of spaciousness.
3
Apply finishes to some materials and leave others raw. In this home, brick and concrete walls are unfinished, but floors are polished and the wooden beams are painted.
On the grid “I love the bitty one-by-one-inch Umi tiles from Design and Direct Source that we added in the bathroom and the kitchen,” Mira says. “The tiler did an amazing job mitering the tiles at every outside corner. The end result is a visually quiet interior architectural element that provides a level of delight when you look closer and notice those mitered corners or the speckled pottery glaze.” All that glitters Gold accents, including light fixtures by Anastassiades and Waterworks tapware, add personality to the bathroom (opposite). The custom sink is by Cement Elegance. A

Softly softly A custom-designed padded wall made by Revive Upholstery helps dampen the acoustics in the bedroom, enhancing sleep. A golden bedside lamp by Michele Varian sits on the built-in bedside table. The throw cushions are from Thompson Street Studios. Blind faith Rather than curtains, the team opted for simple white blinds, leaving the window’s original brickwork uncovered. The white rug is from Aelfie and the rattan chair is one of Pam’s existing pieces (opposite).

who lives here? Malene Hvidt, an architect at Spacon & X, and Nikolaj Mentze, a designer and owner of Studio 0405. @spaconandx | @studio0405
Design duo The Copenhagen home of architect Malene Hvidt and furniture designer Nikolaj Mentze (opposite) is a dialogue between their backgrounds and skills. It celebrates open spaces and furnishings that are as refined as they are functional. Calm & collected In the living area, a Vitra ‘Akari UF3-Q’ floor light by Isamu Noguchi does double duty as art and ambient lighting. An Axel Einar Hjorth ‘Birka’ table in lacquered ash is flanked by an assortment of stools: a round one by Pierre Chapeau; a traditional Finnish sauna stool; and an almost-black, hand-carved French olive tree stool. WHEN AN ARCHITECT AND FURNITURE DESIGNER share a home, creativity has no limits, and having carte blanche to test designs and ideas can have stellar results. For Malene and Nikolaj, the combining of their skills has resulted in a balanced and resolved aesthetic. The couple’s apartment is in a leafy part of Copenhagen called Frederiksberg, which was once considered the countryside. It is this location that inspired a harnessing of natural light, which has been allowed to spill in via generous windows and skylights. “Our apartment was owned by an artist in the ’60s who established the big window to get the right amount of daylight,” Malene says. OPEN WIDE “When we moved in we took down a few walls to make the apartment a big studio flat, creating an open plan centered around the big window, so we would be able to lie in bed and still get the light and sky view from the window,” she says. “Our days are punctuated by the rain, snow, clouds and blue sky.” The open layout allowed the couple to create a fluid space zoned with carefully placed furniture. “Nikolaj and I designed a shelving/cabinet module for the centre of the living space, making a light division between the living room and bedroom area,” Malene explains. The timber shelves are expertly styled with pieces that have a place. “We’ve tried to find a balance where nothing is too designed, with a careful curation of every single piece,” she adds. “For us it’s always about finding the right balance of new and old. Everything in our home has a story.” IN NEUTRAL Using a neutral, restrained palette throughout, Malene and Nikolaj were inspired by the delicate shades of sand, which are minimalist while still evoking warmth and feelings of calm and comfort. Touches of brass, natural materials and treasured pieces of furniture – many of which have been designed by the couple or inherited from Malene’s grandfather, well-known architect and designer Peter Hvidt (of Hvidt & Mølgaard) – add to the sense of ease and relaxation that comes with the familiar. homes Natural high Being an attic, the apartment makes the most of the views and natural light thanks to an enormous skylight. The couple use this area as a dining space, anchored by a table designed by Malene’s grandfather, surrounded by solid oak chairs by Olavi Hänninen. A nude photograph by Malene’s sister Barbara Hvidt and friend Jan Gleie is hung in an unexpected place, adding interest. In the details Two brass FOS ‘Marienborg’ wall lamps are placed either side of a table (opposite left), where a wooden lamp, designed by Nikolaj, sits. Functional focus “We spend most of our time in the kitchen (opposite right). Nikolaj designed it and he’s always there,” says Malene. “It’s made to last, in industrial stainless steel.” A

Divide & conquer Malene and Nikolaj designed a shelving and cabinet module that is placed in the centre of the open-plan space, making a light but clear division between the bedroom area and the living room. There are shelves on the other side, too. The sofa is by Piero Lissoni for Fritz Hansen, and the artworks leaning against the wall include an original framed drawing by Le Corbusier. “It was a present to my grandfather,” says Malene. A

81
Calming tones “We painted the walls a sand colour with a chalk paint and all the panels white. The walls make the room look slightly darker and provide a contrast to the big window,” Malene says of the wall treatment used throughout. Zen zone Wood is the real protagonist in the bedroom area (opposite). Simplicity is the key in this space, which is dedicated to relaxation and intimacy. The striking upside-down picture is by Casper Sejersen, and the stool cast in bronze was designed by Nikolaj.

Sleep easy In the simple bedroom space, another Vitra lamp by Isamu Noguchi, the YA2, becomes a sculptural piece of art, while an artwork on the wall by Poul Winther strikes just the right tone. Textural feeling In the bathroom (opposite), grey terrazzo is lifted with brass fittings. The stool was designed by Nikolaj for a store in Copenhagen, and the tap is by Vola, the perfect match for the round vintage mirror.

4 ways to keep small spaces clutter-free
1
Install lots of shelves and clever hidden storage. If you opt for open shelves, make sure there is order. If everything has a place, you can avoid the mess.
2
Be selective with decorative touches, and go for practical yet beautiful pieces. If it doesn’t have meaning or tell a story, does it need to be there?
3
You can never have too many stools or side tables. Use as bedside tables, lamp stands or coffee tables, and they can be moved around to suit.
4
By creating divides or screens with furniture, you can add extra storage while creating a visual break from messier areas, such as the kitchen. A

87
By the book A library of books and objects fill the bespoke shelving module in the living room, many of which nod to Malene and Nikolaj’s great passions: design and architecture.

Travel and landscape photographer and new mum to Edie, 3 months
THE LAST FEW MONTHS for Kara Rosenlund have been all about finding a new rhythm, as she settles into life as a new mum to her daughter Evie. “I’m loving motherhood so far,” she says. “The quiet moments are my favourite, when I’m feeding her and she looks up at me and breaks into a huge gummy smile.” Running a small business makes taking maternity leave tricky, but Kara has a great support network around her. “My mum comes twice a week to help out and my husband Tim is very hands on; I love watching them together.” Not knowing if Edie would be a girl or boy, Kara decorated the nursery in neutrals, with natural and handmade elements to reflect her love of nature. But the purchase that has more than paid for itself? An exercise ball. “Edie loves it when I hold her and bounce,” Kara explains. “It really helps settle her when she gets a bit fussy around witching hour.” A @reallivingmag

WHEN SHE’S NOT FEEDING OUR TUMMIES and souls with the deliciously rustic recipes on her blog and in her cookbooks, Julia Busuttil Nishimura is sharing her love of food and cooking with her two boys, Haruki and Yukito. “Food is such a huge priority in our lives,” she tells. “Haruki loves to help me in the kitchen – trimming beans for dinner, washing vegetables and stirring things – and Yukito is always at our legs; I think soon he’ll be up on the stool helping too.” Julia and her husband Nori recently moved to a larger house, and the boys now have their own rooms – a bright, fun space for Haruki, filled with colourful bedlinen, rattan baskets and lots of cushions to read on, and a more neutral, grounded space for Yuki, with a timber cot and calming artworks. “I am very much in that mindset of buying something well-made and only buying it once,” says Julia. THE JUGGLE WAS MOST CERTAINLY REAL when Lucy Montgomery became a new mum to her daughter Grace. “I launched my homewares range, Lucy Montgomery Collection, when Grace was a newborn, so she came with me everywhere. It was by no means easy, but I loved having her with me,” she says. These days, Grace is a spirited toddler, who loves to sing – at the dinner table or in the bath. “Her personality is so bubbly and assertive at times,” Lucy tells. Lucy drew on her interior design knowledge and impeccable eye when decorating Grace’s room, which features a mixture of investment pieces, hand-me-downs from Lucy’s sister and items from her own collection. “I love pieces that have been traditionally crafted using natural materials,” she explains. “When things work well and also look beautiful, they elevate the everyday.” A @reallivingmag

Eva will happily paint or draw for hours, and she and Coby love to dress up. “Coby has multiple hats and caps, while Eva has various sunglasses and bags. They both love shoes,” says mum Kitty. She admits motherhood has caused a significant shift in her priorities. “I have to be realistic about how much I can do for the business, which is hard, but having a small, efficient team that I can rely on really helps. And I’m so grateful to have been there to see all of the kids’ key developmental moments.” Kitty and her husband are currently renovating their Sydney home, with plans for a bright, shared bedroom for the kids. “There will be pops of colour, bold, abstract forms, sculptural lighting, coloured bedheads and patchwork quilts,” Kitty explains. “I love mixing nostalgic elements with the new.” R real living

Finish line A mixture of finishes in the L-shaped kitchen – from the blackbutt timber island to the stone splashback – “descale and exaggerate the spatial proportions”, says Zoe. Green Muuto ‘Nerd’ stools from Living Edge complement the sage green joinery that Rebecca adores. “You can’t help but feel happy opening green and sky-blue cupboards every day,” she tells. The trio of ceramic Honey pendants are by Coco Flip. A
WHEN HOMEOWNERS REBECCA AND MARC came across this charming Victorian terrace, which sits on Wurundjeri land in Melbourne’s inner north, they knew their search for a forever home for their young family was over. “The bones were beautiful, with big, high ceilings and an internal courtyard,” Rebecca shares, although a lack of light and a limited layout hinted at wasted potential. The couple enlisted design firm Wowowa Architects to transform the single-storey terrace into a spacious family home. “The goal was to get light into the middle of the home, which would then feed the surrounding spaces,” project architect Zoe Diacolabrianos explains. In answer, they shifted a bathroom and laundry to the centre of the home, creating an opening at the rear for social spaces to connect with the backyard. The kitchen was remodelled with cabinetry in a dynamic yet soothing palette, while a staircase leads to a curved upper level comprising the main bedroom and study. “We kept the stairs open so the kitchen could borrow and bask in the light,” Zoe says. Peach-coloured bricks formed the basis of the colour palette, which expanded to include tones inspired by the Australian landscape – a deep green reminiscent of a mangrove, warm timbers and the bright blue of the sea. “It was a very unlikely and unusual palette, but surely, by referencing nature, it was bound to come together,” Zoe says. Rebecca and Marc are certainly fans. “We feel so proud of every decision and design element,” Rebecca says. R real living

COLOUR WHEEL Looking to the outdoors for tonal inspiration can result in a harmonious palette
Open slather “We love to mix open shelving into cabinetry,” says Zoe. “It helps create some interest and a point of composition.” In the kitchen, powder-coated metal shelves offer a textural difference against the mottled pink stone surfaces. Blue haven Beneath the staircase, a sunken daybed with inbuilt toy drawers works overtime as a kids’ play space and adults’ retreat. The calming space enjoys views of a fernery-planted lightwell by Straw Brothers, enhancing the indoor/outdoor connection.

BOLD SURFACES IN CHERRY RED AND PALE PINK breathe new life into the original elements of this circa 1960s apartment in Bilbao, Spain, in a renovation carried out by Azab Architects. “The owner is a retired woman who shares her home with two younger family generations,” explains principal architect Iñigo Berasategui. “In a way, she felt that the apartment was feeling tired and she wanted to imbue it with new vitality,” he adds. The remedy? Statement surfaces and materials in happy hues. From the kitchen to the corridor, cost-effective laminate cabinetry and sliding doors boarded by strips of timber have become recurring features, along with walls painted romantic pink. Underfoot, new flooring begs to be noticed, as striking herringbone tiles and polygonal patterned carpet are infused with joyful tones. “The selected colours dialogue easily with the pre-existing finishes and the owner’s collection of furniture, paintings and objects,” Iñigo explains of the pastel palette, which pairs lashings of warm red and blush pink with more subtle hints of muted green and blue. Original Indian Rosewood furnishings, hardwood doors and timber window frames contrast with the marble finishes and kaleidoscopic floors, helping the home stay true to its ’60s bones. Postmakeover, this sweet family home brimming with history is now primed to share with many generations to come. R
Tetris tiles Ceramic tiles in an array of shades by Cinca are arranged in a herringbone pattern, adding depth to the kitchen and laundry. Ahead of the curve Sleek lines and flush cupboards are softened by curved features, like the iGuzzini wall sconce. Hallway heaven Flooring by Ege Carpets (opposite, left) is an immediate conversation starter, flowing from the gallery to the dining area. Low-cost laminate Hard-working plywood laminate framed by strips of timber (opposite, right) was the material of choice in this apartment. A

COLOUR WHEEL Combining pastel tones of pink, peach and mint brings a fresh, retro feel to this home
Stacked up In the light-filled galley kitchen, baby pink and white joinery steal the show. With red cavity pull handles, the cabinetry doubles as a flush feature wall while concealing bulky appliances. Tucked against the wall, a single-column wine rack allows for easy access to an aperitif. Rinse & repeat Custom-made cabinetry by Finsa shapes the open-plan laundry (opposite), which acts as an “introductory space to the kitchen”, says Iñigo. Twin stainless-steel sinks and tapware are built into the understated Compac benchtop.

Prepare your home for winter hibernation mode by switching your summery window shades for a more intimate alternative
photography kristina soljo styling natalie johnson words stephanie hope
advice
WITH AUTUMN NOW IN FULL SWING, the need for cosy, cocooning interiors is especially prevalent. Think tactile throws and cushions to take the chill off, deep sofas for sinking into and soft, indirect lighting to round it all out. And the secret ingredient for closing yourself off from the elements? Some carefully selected window treatments. WINTER WARMERS As Amelia Taylor, head of product at Wynstan, explains, “Temperature and light can play a huge role in creating your desired home environment, and when you choose the right window treatment, it’s easy to regulate temperature to suit your needs.” For the cooler months, you can’t go past curtains. “They add a lovely layer of intimacy and sophistication, with their soft curves and fullness,” Amelia says. “Pair them with roller blinds for insulation and sound absorption.” As an alternative, she suggests Wynstan’s Whisper cellular shades, which have a unique honeycomb design that keeps rooms cosy by preventing indoor heat from escaping. SHADE SELECTION For a heavenly indoor haven, look to soothing shades of grey, blue and green to evoke instant relaxation, and swap your summery sheers for thick, opaque fabrics. Velvet, silk and damask all have great insulating properties and will bring that extra layer of warmth and privacy that we all crave come winter. R

FROM NATURAL STONE AND QUARTZITE to travertine and porcelain, picking the perfect outdoor tile requires an understanding of both aesthetic and practical necessities that cater specifically to your environment and style. SPOILT FOR CHOICE “When selecting an outdoor tile, slip resistance is the first consideration,” says Camron Whittaker, general manager of product and procurement at National Tiles. “Natural materials like travertine, bluestone and quartzite perform well in outdoor spaces. Durability is also important, as is easy maintenance and cleaning – a tile with a textured surface tends to the hide dirt and dust that’s inevitable in most outdoor spaces. Bluestone does absorb heat though, so it’s more suited to pathways and works well in crazy paving format.” NEW INNOVATIONS Recent technological advances have produced porcelain tiles that are now suitable for outdoor use. “Porcelain pavers can be laid on concrete or sand and are suitable for all exterior conditions. They also have excellent slip resistance and durability,” says Camron. “Porcelain pavers are easy to install and simple to clean, and add a contemporary finish to any external space or garden. Neutral tones are the most popular.” A Higher ground Futura tiles in Rose, $105 per sq m, and Futura tiles in Half Rose, $122 per sq m, Di Lorenzo Tiles. GRAND DESIGN Running the same tile from your inside spaces out to an alfresco area is an emerging design feature in Australian homes. “It creates a seamless look that really does transition indoor/outdoor living well, and can be achieved with a range of ceramic and porcelain tiles, as well as natural stone,” Camron explains. Other popular creative applications include tiled house facades, which are easier to maintain than traditional timber or render cladding, and elevating carports or garages with tiled floors. Statement tiles are also becoming a popular choice for thresholds. “They form an important design element for the property and can make a statement about the period or aesthetic of the home,” says Camron. “Small-format encaustic tiles set the scene for what lies beyond the front or back door, and more traditional stone tiles with matching bullnoses create a beautiful finish.” SLIP AWAY To avoid burnt feet or falls, ensure poolside paving is non-slip and doesn’t absorb heat. Look for products with a wet pendulum scale of at least P4, or P5 for slopes and stairs. Entertaining zones also require non-slip, durable tiles, and will benefit most from natural stone or porcelain, Camron says. FISH EN PAPILLOTE Serves 4 Prep time 15 mins Cooking time 15 mins
SOUTH INDIAN COCONUT RICE Serves 4 Prep time 5 mins Cooking time 20 mins
En papillote is a method of cooking in which food is wrapped in a pouch or parcel and baked, creating a steam bath to hold in the moisture. Not only is it a breeze to prepare, it’s also super-fun to open your very own delicious parcel at the table. 1 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ¼ tsp ground turmeric ½ tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp lemon juice 4 x 120g snapper fillets
4 banana leaves, 20cm x 30cm each (see tip) 1 lime, cut into cheeks GREEN BEAN SALAD 300g green beans 2 tbsp olive oil 50g parmesan, finely grated 50g slivered almonds, toasted
Combine garlic paste, spices and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Add fish; turn to coat all over. 2 Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil over high heat. Working with one banana leaf at a time, use tongs to dip each leaf into the boiling water to soften. Refresh under cold, running water. Alternatively, hold each leaf over an open gas flame on the stovetop to make it pliable. 3 Lay banana leaves on a clean surface. Top with a fish fillet; season with salt and pepper. Fold the banana leaf over to enclose the fish. Use kitchen string to secure. 4 Place the fish parcels, seam-side down, in a bamboo steamer. Place steamer over a wok of simmering water (make sure base of steamer doesn’t touch the water). Steam, covered, until the fish is cooked through (7-10 minutes). Remove steamer from heat. GREEN BEAN SALAD 5 Boil, steam or microwave beans until just tender; refresh in iced water. Transfer to a serving bowl; drizzle with the oil, toss to combine. Top with parmesan and almonds. 6 Serve fish parcels with green bean salad, coconut rice (see right), coriander chutney (see right) and lime cheeks. 1
TIP Banana leaves are traditionally used in India, but if they’re not available, you can use baking paper instead.
Often, we serve a delicious Indian curry with a serving of simple boiled rice. This is a missed opportunity and adding the perfect amount of aromatics will kick your dish up a notch. 1 cup (180g) long-grain basmati rice 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seed 10 fresh curry leaves ¼ cup (20g) desiccated coconut
Cook rice as per packet instructions. Melt coconut oil in a heavy-based saucepan over a mediumhigh heat (1 minute). Increase heat to high. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves; cook, stirring, until mustard seeds start to splutter (approximately 30 seconds). Reduce heat to medium. Add coconut; cook, stirring, until coconut is lightly toasted (2 minutes). Add rice; cook, stirring until each grain is coated in spice mixture (approximately 2 minutes). Season to taste. 1 2
CORIANDER CHUTNEY Makes ¾ cup Prep time 10 mins
A bright-looking herb blend, this multipurpose chutney can be used as a dip, spread or sauce. This Indian staple is light and flavoursome, and when teamed with snacks like papdi chaat or pakoras, it will have guests reaching for more. Essentially no Indian street food fare is complete without this condiment. It is a super healthy option that adds freshness to your dish and can be easily stored in the refrigerator. 1 cup fresh mint leaves 1 cup fresh coriander leaves 5mm piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
1 fresh long green chilli ½ tsp chaat masala ¼ tsp black salt (kala namak) 1½ tsp lemon juice
Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender, then add approximately 1 tablespoon water (if chutney is still too thick add a little more water). Process until smooth; season to taste. 1
TIP Use regular salt if black salt is not available. Store chutney in a sterilised jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. A

SOUTH INDIAN MADRAS CURRY WITH PRAWNS & COCONUT RICE Serves 4 Prep time 20 mins Cooking time 20 mins 400g medium uncooked prawns 2 cups coconut curry base (see recipe opposite) 1½ tbsp tamarind puree 600ml coconut milk, plus extra to serve ½ cup Thai basil leaves 1 long red chilli, thinly sliced @reallivingmag

4 baby cucumbers (qukes), thinly sliced lengthways ½ small red onion, thinly sliced CRISPY GARLIC ¼ cup (60ml) vegetable oil 8 garlic cloves, thinly sliced Coconut rice (see p141) and malabar roti (opposite), to serve
Peel and devein prawns. 2 Heat coconut curry base in a large saucepan over mediumhigh heat (2-4 minutes). Add tamarind puree and coconut milk. Reduce heat to low; cook, stirring, until mixture starts to boil (2 minutes). Stir in the prawns; cook until flesh changes from translucent to opaque (3 minutes). CRISPY GARLIC 3 Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add garlic; cook, stirring until golden brown and crisp (1-2 minutes). Remove garlic using a slotted spoon; drain on paper towel. 4 Ladle prawn curry over coconut rice in serving bowls. Drizzle with extra coconut milk; top with basil, chilli and crispy garlic. Serve with cucumber, red onion and malabar roti. 1

MALABAR ROTI Makes 10 Prep time 20 mins, plus resting time Cooking time 20 mins 3 cups (450g) plain flour 1 cup (225g) coconut oil, approximately, melted, cooled
3 tsp salt 40g softened butter
Place flour, ¼ cup (60ml) of the oil, the salt and 1¼ cups (310ml) water in a large bowl; using your hands, mix to form a soft dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic. 2 Divide dough into 10 balls. Place ¼ cup (60ml) of the oil in bowl. Add balls to bowl, turn to coat in oil; transfer to a baking paper-lined oven tray. Dot top of dough with butter. Cover with plastic wrap; stand at room temperature for 5 hours or overnight. (This will relax the gluten developed during kneading, which produces a tender, textured dough.) 3 Working with one ball of dough, and using 1 teaspoon of oil and the heel of your hand, press dough out on a lightly oiled surface, into a round. With oiled hands, carefully stretch the dough out from the centre in a circular motion, pulling it gently until very thin and approximately 20cm round. (Don’t worry if a few tears form as you stretch dough, this doesn’t matter and won’t be obvious at the end.) 4 Brush dough with a little of the oil. Roll up into a rope. Coil dough rope into a scroll shape. Flatten the scroll into a disc. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the disc until 15-20cm in diameter. Transfer to a baking paper-lined oven tray. Repeat with remaining dough. 5 Heat 1 teaspoon of the remaining oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Cook roti, one at a time, until puffed and golden (approximately 2 minutes each side). Remove from pan and brush with a little more of the remaining oil. Cover to keep warm. 1

COCONUT CURRY BASE Makes 4 cups Prep time 10 mins Cooking time 30 mins 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp coriander seeds 3 tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground turmeric 2 tbsp ghee 1 tsp brown mustard seeds 6 fresh curry leaves 1 onion, finely chopped
1 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp ginger paste 3 vine-ripened tomatoes, roughly chopped, blended to a puree 8 dried red chillies, soaked, stalks removed, blended to a paste 600ml coconut milk
Dry-roast cumin and coriander seeds in a small frying pan over high heat; toast until they start to crackle (1 minute). Cool slightly, pound with a mortar and pestle, or blend in a spice grinder, until finely ground; stir in garam masala and turmeric. 2 Heat ghee in a saucepan over high heat. Add mustard seeds; cook until they splutter (30 seconds). Add curry leaves; cook (30 seconds). Reduce heat to medium; add onion and saute until very tender and starting to caramelise (6-8 minutes). Add garlic and ginger pastes along with ground spice mix; cook, stirring, until fragrant (1 minute). 3 Add pureed tomato and chilli paste; bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer, stirring occasionally, until reduced by half (20 minutes). Stir through coconut milk; simmer until heated through (3 minutes). A 1

PAYASAM RICE PUDDING WITH MIXED BERRY COMPOTE Serves 4-6 Prep time 15 mins Cooking time 45 mins
One of the first dishes I tried in India was rice pudding. What I like most about this dish is how quickly it can be whipped up using leftovers. Creamy and utterly delicious, it’s just what you need to indulge in after a meal. 50g unsalted butter ½ cup (100g) jasmine rice, rinsed 3 cups (750ml) milk ½ cup jaggary or brown sugar 1 tsp ground cardamom ½ tsp lightly crushed saffron threads (optional) ¼ cup (35g) slivered almonds ¼ cup (35g) slivered pistachios
MIXED BERRY COMPOTE 1 tsp gluten-free cornflour cup ( 80ml) water 125g mixed berries, fresh or frozen 125g blackberries, fresh or frozen
Melt butter in a medium heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Add rice; cook, stirring, until lightly toasted and butter is browned and fragrant (approximately 2 minutes). Increase heat to high. Add the milk, jaggary, cardamom and saffron (if using) to pan. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low; cook, stirring occasionally, until rice is tender and mixture is thick and creamy (about 40 minutes). Stand for 5 minutes (see tip). MIXED BERRY COMPOTE 2 Place cornflour and water in a small saucepan over low heat; cook, stirring, until smooth (1 minute). Add berries; cook until berries just start to soften and liquid is syrupy (10 minutes). Cool. 3 Spoon rice pudding into serving bowls. Top with mixed berry compote and sprinkle with almonds and pistachios. 1
TIP If the rice pudding thickens on standing, reheat gently, adding a little extra milk, until it returns to the desired creamy consistency.

With the Hawkesbury River at its doorstep, it was only natural that the redesign of Calabash Bay Lodge take inspiration from the pure luxury of the landscape

THE SECOND THING YOU NOTICE upon arriving at Calabash Bay Lodge is the percussive rhythm of eucalyptus leaves whispering, gentle waves licking the sides of a pontoon and boats purring along the water. The first is the jaw-dropping view of the Hawkesbury River, its handsome sandstone cliffs carved into the horizon. The house is just a stone’s throw from Sydney, but as you lounge on the balcony with a glass of wine in hand, you would never know it. Bordered by national parks and set over three levels, Calabash Bay Lodge is a private four-bedroom retreat with a front row seat to the river. Access to the property is via boat, which creates a physical sense of freedom and gives guests the feeling they’re being let in on a secret. Those in the know come here to relax, recharge and celebrate special occasions, and when the pandemic forced owner Kim Ellis to close the lodge last year, she seized the opportunity and approached interior designer Carole Whiting to give the property an indulgent revamp. “The house has a wonderful outlook and just needed an update,” says Carole, who bonded with Kim while collaborating on her other Wild Luxury holiday property in Palm Beach. The brief, Carole says, was a balance between “making it informal enough for guests to enjoy their stay A

come into a gentle, calm space where they can bring their own vibes” Landscape art Situated on Calabash Bay in Berowra Waters, the lodge is immersed within the landscape, treating guests to views like this. Kayaks, paddleboards and fishing gear are provided and you don’t need a license to drive the private boat – the lodge’s attentive, friendly staff recommend packing a picnic and exploring the area this way. And after a day on the water, why not curl up with a book from the mini library.
but also sophisticated to elevate their senses. We wanted the interior to hold its own without overtaking the hero, which is the view.” There are, mind you, several showstopping design features, particularly the kitchen island and splashback, and the vanity in the main bathroom, all made from Vagli Oro marble. Carole loved the caramel and crimson veining and she selected this material before anything else. The marble informed the rest of the palette, which is gentle on the senses and includes two-toned joinery in pale timber and soft grey, gunmetal tapware, stone-look porcelain bathroom tiles and woolly carpet in the bedrooms. In the open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, Australian hardwood floors and hemp rugs create textural harmony between the interiors and bushland beyond. “The natural hemp is a nod to the native flora surrounding the home, and the hardwood sits well in the strong light and reminds us we are in Australia,” Carole adds. The lodge is, at heart, a place for families and friends to get together. Dinner parties can be organised with a private chef, meals can be catered, movie nights are sorted thanks to the smorgasbord of streaming services and guests can use the private boat and kayaks. Outdoor entertaining areas offer extra cooking and dining options, while more intimate balconies provide undisturbed outlooks. However, the best seat in the house is the Agape ‘Immersion’ bath. Deeper than your usual tub, it’s positioned in front of a room-width window. As Carole says, “How do you compete with that view?” A

Fairest forms Carole introduced curved silhouettes in the bathroom, including this custom mirror and a custom fluted glass shower screen. The Vagli Oro marble used for the vanity and in the kitchen is from Artedomus. Small marble shelves are mounted on the walls to display candles and body care products. The Fjord tiles, Agape ‘Memory’ tapware and Agape ‘Dot Line’ rail are all from Artedomus. The sconce is a RBW ‘Mori’ lamp from Koda Lighting. Still life Beautiful accessories in neutral tones instil calm (opposite, top). “I like the interiors to sit gently on your senses so the guests add the colour and life,” Carole explains. Natural waves In the main bathroom (opposite, bottom), “the view was the focus, so we extended the windows to run the full length of the room”, she says. A deep Agape ‘Immersion’ bathtub by Neri & Hu sits underneath and the open shower faces the window so that guests can gaze out while they wash. @reallivingmag
