IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

re deck do-over HGTV Magazine Editor in chief Sara Peterson dreams up a new outdoor space with max summer style. in partnership with

hen I bought my house six years ago, what drew me to it more than the vaulted living room and the original hardwood floors was the big backyard. Half an acre and it overlooks a foresty nature preserve that (fingers crossed) can never be developed. It’s quiet and private, lush with oak trees and arborvitae. Sitting on the deck one evening prompted a friend who had stopped by for a cocktail to tell me, “Wow, you’re queen of your domain out here!” But as great as the yard was, the deck needed a redo. The icky red paint on the cedar boards was flaking, and the whole thing lacked cool features that I’d seen on the pages of HGTV Magazine and on HGTV shows. I pictured a new, reconfigured deck with multiple levels and designated areas—for dining, for lounging—that stepped down gradually to the lawn. Also on the wish list: decking materials that were easy to maintain through sun-drenched summers and cold, snowy winters. Time to kick this dream into action!

w the design game plan

DECKING TimberTech AZEK 5 ½-inch-by-1-inch Standard Width Deck Boards in Dark Hickory, from the Vintage Collection. Sustainable capped polymer boards with a subtle wire-brushed, low-gloss finish.

RAILING TimberTech Classic Composite Series in black, with Drink Rail and Cable Rail Infill. The Drink Rail is a Dark Hickory Deck Board. Go to TimberTech.com for detailed info.

LET’S TALK DECKING I love the contrast of dark wood tones surrounded by white, so I went with Dark Hickory TimberTech AZEK Deck Boards from the Vintage Collection. A mix of white furniture gives off relaxing, resort-y vibes and makes the deep brown floors that have the look and texture of real wood stand out even more. Since my deck sits about 4 feet off the ground, I also designed the deck skirting using TimberTech deck boards. The skirting spans the perimeter of the deck and hides the not-so-attractive space under the deck—a huge improvement over the flimsy lattice previously in place.

SLEEK RAILING + SECTIONAL Yes, you can make furniture out of deck boards! The sectional, built out of 3 ½-inch TimberTech AZEK Deck Boards in Dark Hickory, seats 10 people. Plus: There’s storage space underneath the seats for stashing extra pillows. (You can never have too many outdoor pillows!) Every spot on the sectional is equally toasty around the gas-powered firepit. For the railing, I aimed for a simple style. These black ones, from the Classic Composite Series, are topped with a Dark Hickory Deck Board. The Cable Rail infills give the railing a modern look and don’t interrupt the view.

how the other half lives (and decorates) House tours are the foundation of our magazine. We’ve stepped into 202 homes, and we like to check back in every now and then. Homeowner Emily Yeates, above, painted a fab striped wall behind the door of her bungalow in Phoenix, AZ. “We outgrew it and moved but kept the theme,” she says. “Now we have blackand-white checkered marble in our entry.”

It’s funny how you never get around to looking up home stuff you’ve always wondered about. We did it for you, sharing details on similar furniture, lighting, kitchenware, flooring, flowers, even fabrics. (ICYMI: Velvet is woven, a process that results in a strong material that’s good for upholstery, and velour is knitted, so it’s stretchy and best for clothes.)

ke i cool This DIY caught our eye on Instagram, so we had to get the details. Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore painted on a diagonal is a fun feature. Punchy fabric can make over any corkboard— attaching it took less than 10 minutes.

WFH chic: a part art, part functional gallery wall. The three prints in the middle are by She Is This and the top right one is by Dana Todd Pope.

Putting corner brackets on a frame = instant elevated style.

THE DIYER: Erin Marshall of @liveprettyonapenny “I’d been wanting to refresh my home office, and then I spotted a $10 corkboard at a thrift store. I popped off the skinny frame and covered the cork with fabric from Hobby Lobby using spray adhesive. I built a chunkier frame out of wood pieces that I’d spraypainted Gloss White by Krylon and screwed on corner brackets I’d painted gold for a campaign furniture effect. This simple project kicked off a whole room redo!” 22 HGTV Magazine

When depression sets you back,

Keep Moving Forward. Make an appointment to ask your doctor about adding REXULTI® (brexpiprazole) to your antidepressant.

Actor portrayals

When taken with an antidepressant, REXULTI was proven to reduce depression symptoms an extra 62% compared to the antidepressant alone.

ANTIDEPRESSANT

62% GREATER REDUCTION

If you’re still feeling depressed after 2 months on an antidepressant, make an appointment to ask your doctor about adding REXULTI.

IN DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS

6 week study in adults, with ongoing symptoms of depression, still taking an antidepressant. Individual results may vary.

INDICATION: REXULTI is a prescription medicine used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). REXULTI is used with antidepressant medicines, when your healthcare provider determines that an antidepressant alone is not enough to treat your depression. It is not known if REXULTI is safe and effective in people under 18 years of age.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Medicines like REXULTI can raise the risk of death in elderly people who have lost touch with reality (psychosis) due to confusion and memory loss (dementia). REXULTI is not approved for treating patients with dementia-related psychosis. Antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children, teenagers, or young adults within the first few months of treatment. Pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings and report such changes to the healthcare provider. This is very important when antidepressant medicine is started or when the dose is changed. REXULTI is approved only for adults 18 and over with depression. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following serious side effects: • Stroke in elderly people (cerebrovascular problems) that can lead to death. • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, changes in pulse, heart rate, and blood pressure as these may be symptoms of a rare but potentially fatal condition. • Uncontrolled body movements in your face, tongue or other body parts (tardive dyskinesia, TD). TD may become permanent, and may start after you stop taking REXULTI.

• Problems with your metabolism: High blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you have diabetes or risk factors for it, your healthcare provider should monitor your blood sugar. Increased fat levels (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood or weight gain. • Unusual urges. Some people taking REXULTI have had unusual urges, such as gambling, binge eating or eating that you cannot control (compulsive), compulsive shopping and sexual urges. • Low white blood cell count. • Decreased blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). • Seizures (convulsions) • Problems controlling your body temperature so that you feel too warm. Avoid getting over-heated or dehydrated while taking REXULTI. • Difficulty swallowing that can cause food or liquid to get into your lungs. The most common side effects of REXULTI include weight gain and an inner sense of restlessness such as feeling like you need to move. These are not all the possible side effects of REXULTI. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you’re taking, since there are some risks for drug interaction. Until you know how REXULTI affects you, do not drive, operate machinery or do dangerous activities. REXULTI may make you feel drowsy. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT MATTRESS You spend one-third of your life in bed, why not make it wonderful? ― MAKE IT PERSONAL

Scale the size to your space and match the firmness to your sleep style. Map out your bedroom to determine whether a king or a queen would be the best fit. If you sleep with a partner (or pets!), it may be worth sizing up. Find the right feel—Firm, Plush, or Ultra Plush— based on your usual sleep position.

Designer Spotlight

― THINK LONG TERM

A high-quality mattress should last up to 10 years, so invest in comfort, durability, and support. Research how it’s made—the materials used for the interior and the exterior can have a major impact on comfort and durability over time. ― TRUST THE LEGACY

Seek out a brand with a proven track record. Stearns & Foster mattresses are crafted by hand, not massproduced. So much care is put into them that each mattress is handsigned by the Master Craftsman who built it. ― ELEVATE YOUR COMFORT

A Legacy of Design in Every Stitch At Stearns & Foster, we believe that exceptional design lives in the details. This is why we have spent every day of our 175-year legacy committed to refining the details that make Stearns & Foster distinct. From velvet trim to hand-tufted top layers, our mattresses are meticulously crafted to look as good as they feel. Use our tips to help you choose the perfect mattress to complete your bedroom sanctuary.

LEARN MORE AT STEARNSANDFOSTER.COM

We’re spending more time in our bedrooms than ever before—from working to reading to bingeing the latest series. Adding an adjustable base to your mattress can optimize comfort, making your bed a life hub by day and a sleep sanctuary by night.

what still makes you go hmmmm…. Even HGTV stars second-guess design decisions before they figure them out. Bet you can relate!

“When I’m hanging up art, sometimes I get stuck on how high to place it. Officially it should be 57 to 60 inches off the floor but, honestly, it can also depend on what’s going on in the room. For example, if you are putting art above a console, you may have to move it a little higher so it’s not blocked by a tallish lamp. And over a low sofa, artwork might look better a little lower. Trust your gut and your eyes.”

Orlando Soria, Build Me Up

“Despite how much I love them, redoing wood floors still manages to stump me every time. I’m forever playing with when to use a stain to change the color of the wood completely versus just using a clear coat for protection. And all of that is dependent on what wood species the floor is in the first place, like oak versus walnut. I have to remind myself to always look closely at the grain to determine what I’m working with before I dive in. It’s an ongoing battle that I will conquer! Luckily, I have Steve to help out.”

“Whether I’m buying new lighting for a client or for myself, I’ll always first stretch out my tape measure in the space to get a sense of scale, especially for pendants over a kitchen island. A lot of people can just eyeball it, but I don’t have that gift!”

Tiffany Brooks, $50K Three Ways

Leanne Ford, Home Again With the Fords

“Whenever I’m choosing white paint, I end up testing dozens of samples. There are so many shades! But approximately 99% of the time, I’ll end up going with my tried-andtrue hues—White Dove by Benjamin Moore for a softer shade in a room that gets lots of light, or Simply White by Benjamin Moore for a clean, crisp white in a darker room.”

“No matter how many times I’ve set up gallery walls, I will never not plan one out on the floor. I’ll take a ton of photos in various arrangements until I get it right. When I’m in the mood to go above and beyond, I’ll trace the layout I like on a big piece of crafts paper and tape it up to help with the install.”

Sabrina Soto, Ty Breaker

“Like many tall guys, I have a natural tendency to hang

showerheads and light switches higher than they’re actually supposed to be. I constantly have to remind myself of the standard heights—80 inches from the floor for showerheads, 48 inches from the floor for light switches. Both are way too low, in my opinion, but I guess short people need lights and showers too!”

“Mixing and matching gold hardware, like faucets

Breegan Jane, The House My Wedding Bought, on discovery+

and cabinet knobs, looks great but can get tricky. There are so many different types and finishes—satin, brushed, hammered, sandblasted, and that doesn’t even begin to cover it. Photos on a computer screen may not be that accurate. I’ve found that it helps to order everything from one online retailer, and use that return policy as necessary!”

Brian Kleinschmidt, 100 Day Dream Home

Jenny Marrs, Fixer to Fabulous

fun decorating “Staring down an empty built-in that I have to style can make me sweat a bit, and relying on a goto formula helps: books stacked in different directions, some decorative boxes for interesting color, a few small plants, and a funky object or two.”

“I’m always changing up lampshades, a quick way to refresh a room—it’s like switching up your jewelry. But guess what:

Not all shades fit on all lamps. Some have spider

“More often than not, deciding

between a king and a queen bed stops me.

Even if a king will technically fit in a space, it could appear crunched once I bring in nightstands, so might not be the best move. That’s the thing about bed sizes: A king is 16 inches wider than a queen, though they’re the exact same length—did you know that?!”

fitters, some are the uno kind, and so on. To make this easier on myself when I stage a home I’m selling, I’ve taken pictures of the lamps I have in inventory without the shades on so I can see how they attach. When I go shopping, I just look at my phone to remind myself of what I need.”

Page Turner, Fix My Flip

Jasmine Roth, Help! I Wrecked My House

“I’ve renovated seven of my own over the years, but I still get nervous about floor plans for kitchens. They are not cheap! So I break out the painter’s tape and mark the layout on the floor, with big letters to show where the appliances will go—D for dishwasher, R for refrigerator, etc. Then I do a kindergarten-style walk through the space and pretend I’m cooking and cleaning in it. It works!” Clinton Kelly, Self-Made Mansions

navy, white, and (yes!) black Navy cabinets (Charcoal Blue by Sherwin-Williams) are super-glam in a matte finish.

Look again—that backsplash tile is black-and-white (it’s from Cement Tile Shop). Sure, navy-and-white would have matched the cabinets, but it gives this kitchen edge. “They unexpectedly work together because they’re neutrals,” says architect Karen Soorikian about the project in Atlanta, GA. Open shelves outfitted with silver pothangers allow for bursts of color from cookware and accessories.

Fantastic new ways to enjoy the classic combo.

color-block hip Navy and white in an industrial loft? Bring it! “Painting them on a diagonal, combined with the concrete floors and ceiling, is totally modern,” says designer Mary Rossi. The look continues in the downtown Minneapolis, MN, spot with an iron RHTeen canopy bed and long-armed sconces from World Market. Pattern play in the bedding, benches, and rug piles on character.

The wall is painted Simply White and Hale Navy, both by Benjamin Moore.

rustic style Just add…li’l navy pillows.

Despite its nautical rep, navy and white can be plenty cozy. In this sitting room in Charlestown, RI, designed by Kate Jackson, the color scheme exudes the warmth of the stone fireplace. “Navy paint on the walls and built-ins has an enveloping effect,” says Kate. (For a similar shade, try Royal Navy by Valspar.) A pair of slipper chairs upholstered in striped fabric by Raoul Textiles and several small tables form an inviting setup.

Pattern power! It’s from Anthropologie.

can’t-miss-it wallpaper

A colorful sofa is a commitment, but navy will never go out of style.

These stripes are painted (top to bottom) Bunny Gray, Ultra White, Gentleman’s Gray, and Nile Green, all by Benjamin Moore.

+ pops of green To thrill a kid obsessed with trains, designer Laura Fox got on board with working around the existing navy furniture in this Bethesda, MD, home. “Green brought an energy that kept the room from going nautical,” she says. Other exciting elements: railroad crossing signs on the wall (from Retro Works Studio on Etsy) and in the lamp (by Pottery Barn Kids), and painted stripes in varying widths. A pillow is always a good way to unite colors; the green-andblue one is made with fabric by Jonathan Adler for Kravet.

Like a favorite pair of jeans, the navy-and-white wallpaper flecked with yellow and red makes a statement yet has a comfy feel. “It was a perfect fit for the family room in a Berwyn, PA, home, where they watch TV and play games,” says designer Stephanie Kraus. She also put in a movie-nightready oversize Bernhardt sofa in a blue pulled from the wallpaper. The similarly large-scale light oak coffee table by Dovetail balances the rich tones and has room for all the snacks.

The door is navy on the other side, too (Novelty Navy by Dunn-Edwards).

solids & stripes Inspired by the Laguna Beach, CA, location, designer Courtney Thomas layered on navy in the entry, including a console from Anthropologie and grass cloth wallpaper. “A striped piece of furniture gives a playful feel,” she says— although Penny, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, clearly finds it relaxing. Woven baskets by Serena & Lily and a banana leaf mirror boost the chill charm.

Ceramics from West Elm contrast grass cloth wallpaper by Ralph Lauren.

americana vibes A print of the Chesapeake Bay adored by the couple who owns this West River, MD, home led to an entire dining room of navy, white, and a hit of red. Designer Carrie Miller chose grass cloth wallpaper and an indoor–outdoor rug by Surya to carry over the blues in the art. Red-andwhite bistro chairs from Overstock play off the sails. The chandelier, by Made Goods, is bay-induced as well—it’s made of oyster shells. “I was surprised at how easily it all came together,” says Carrie. “That can happen when you’re working with a classic color palette.”

standout stencil As traditional as navy and white can sometimes be, it has an offbeat side. “I embraced the location of this powder room in San Francisco, CA,” says designer Noz Nozawa of the stencils created by decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga. Landmarks like the Giants’ baseball stadium and the Golden Gate Bridge are painted navy (Newburyport Blue by Benjamin Moore) on white walls (Oxford White by Benjamin Moore). A quartz countertop, a custom navy vanity, and denim-blue tile from Fireclay ground the space. The orange ceiling (Rumba Orange by Benjamin Moore) and faucet by Vola add jolts. Also, says Noz, “It’s the color of the Giants.”

The design takes a cue from toile—with a fun, updated twist.

coastal mode

Swirly umbrellas in a photo by Gray Malin fit right in.

Beachy design feels new when you toss in a mix of graphic prints. “Blue is one of those colors where all the shades look good together, so it’s natural to pair patterns,” says designer Andrew Howard about this sitting area in a Bahamas home. Smaller-scale shapes in the fabrics—Imogen Heath curtains and Ferrick Mason pillows—meld with the big stripes on the sofa. The ombré garden stool (Kathy Kuo Home has a similar one) turned side table and light oak floors bring in breeziness.

more COLOR A bright bouquet of sisal and raffia baskets enlivens the bedroom/ playroom of a 7-year-old girl in Charlotte, NC. Designers Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst (@houseofnomaddesign), who sourced them from artisans in Rwanda and Ghana, went for eyecatching hues that complement the teal sofa but don’t compete with it (the undyed patches on the baskets help). A variety of sizes gives them extra energy, along with the 3-D effect from overlapping edges.

more DRAMA With only one window in the dining room of her home in Gainesville, GA, “I decided to go all in with a dark, moody look,” says artist Angela Chrusciaki Blehm (@angelachrusciakiblehm). Painting a console and the wall behind it the same rich color—Burgundy by SherwinWilliams—gave the room serious impact. The monochromatic scene has a bonus effect: It makes the art pieces, brass lamps, and yellow chairs stand out.

more GLAM “I’ve always had a soft spot for that old Hollywood vibe—and it inspired my guest house,” says Austin, TX, designer Katie Kime (@katie_kime). Striped wallpaper (her creation), a posh kelly green velvet tufted sofa (from a local store), and chic salmon-hued lamps (from HomeGoods) are worthy costars. She couldn’t stop the swank there. Armchairs with thinner stripes (also from HomeGoods) amplify the wall, while layered rugs offer ritzy texture (as does goldendoodle Max). Really, can you ever have too much glam? Answer: nope.

more PERSONAL A gallery wall is an ever-pleasing way to make a space your own, but floor-to-ceiling photos do that big-time. Designer Corine Maggio (@cmnaturaldesigns) celebrated a couple living in Brooklyn, NY, with 23 images ranging from wedding portraits to travel shots. Continuing the room’s palette, she had prints made in blackand-white, then varied them with Pottery Barn frames in rectangles and squares. (There’s a Frame TV by Samsung in the center.) The payoff has been just as massive. “They told me that the photos make them smile every day,” says Corine.

This guest bedroom in Austin, TX, looks out over a verdant forest, and designer Erin Williamson (@sterinwilliamson) couldn’t resist going wild with pattern. She started with glorious leafy Sandberg wallpaper and tacked a swath on the lampshade, too. “Layering them created the immersive, shadowy depth of a forest,” she says. There’s also foliage in the lumbar pillow, made out of a scrap from an old wool tapestry. A tea-dyed thrift store coverlet has a dreamy look— no wonder guests have said it feels like waking up in Narnia.

more QUIRK Arranged at varying heights on a brass and glass étagère, globes bring a world of whimsy to this home in Fairfield, CT. “Vintage ones have these great saturated shades,” says blogger Charlotte Smith (@atcharlotteshouse). “I love hunting them down at flea markets on weekends.” They’re especially fun next to birds and butterflies in flight on chinoiserie wallpaper, from Rebel Walls. Charlotte’s five kids enjoy them as well, in their own way: “I’ve found globes in our playhouse, in a fort, and on toy railroad tracks!”

how bad is it to never clean your wedding dress? Divorce yourself from regret. “Wedding styles change and the odds that a daughter or other family member will someday want to wear your dress as is are low,” says Sara Rothan, a tailor in Los Angeles who specializes in bridal alterations and redesigns. “I got married two and a half years ago, and mine is uncleaned!” If you’re the sentimental type, know that even an unpreserved gown with stains could still be reconfigured into an entirely new look or a rehearsal dinner outfit. That “something old” could also be your veil: When a client wanted to incorporate her grandma’s, Rothan sewed a piece into the lining of her dress. At least store your gown in a breathable garment bag and keep in a cool, dry spot. Ready to part ways? AD AT ALL!

Given too much wiggle room, a sconce could repeatedly tug on its own wiring from everyday vibrations within a home. “When there are loose connections, there’s a potential for fire,” says Chris Mullins, an instructor at the Washburn Institute of Technology in Topeka, KS. Electricity will jump any gaps between wires, generating a flash of heat. Check a fixture after you dust it or change the bulb, and tighten screws as needed. “If it’s still wobbly, the electrical box might have loosened and you probably want to call a professional,” Mullins says. Heads up, garage lights are especially prone to getting wiggly because of the heavy vibration of the doors, so make sure they’re sturdy, too—say, when you rotate sports gear seasonally.

If your beloved kept nodding off during the finale and you tried to keep them up or gave fair warning that you’d stay glued to the TV, you’re in the clear, says Esther Boykin, a relationship therapist based in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Even if you indulged in a multi-episode binge on your own, a willpower fail is understandable. “Sometimes you just want to watch the way you want to watch, especially if a partner gets chatty or asks too many questions,” says Boykin. That said, ’fessing up is in order. Should your couch buddy be bummed, you could offer to rewatch (and maybe you get the snacks). Be careful not to reveal any spoilers—then you’re really in the doghouse!

While your candle might still light (depending on how long it’s had to dry), the flame could sputter, the oils may be diluted, and the wax might not melt like it’s supposed to—all of which is to say, the mosquitoes will have won. “An unsteady burn and less fragrance oil means there likely won’t be enough scent to deter insects,” says Kathy LaVanier, a spokesperson for the National Candle Association. Leave H20 pooled in an outdoor candle long enough and you may well give mosquitoes an opportunity to spawn in a mini incubator of standing water. Try to remember to put the lid on after each use or stash it away. For the record: Lemon eucalyptus oil can be more effective than citronella, but your absolute best protection is repellent applied to skin.

A cheerful haven in Santa Fe is just what the doctor ordered.

Flashes of pink and a widestriped rug perk up the dining spot. Heart art showered in natural light spreads the love.

White trim (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) refreshed the stucco exterior.

A border of tile neatens up a magnetic aluminum board packed with photos.

hen your job takes place in an emergency room, it helps to come home to a space brimming with comfort and joy. That’s exactly what physician Christina Price and husband Connor Browne have created in the 1950s Santa Fe, NM, home they share with their four daughters and son, when he’s home from college. “I wanted a supercomfortable house with an upbeat spirit,” says Christina, a lively place for her family and friends to gather. Although she and Connor adored the home’s rambling layout, ample light, and abundant outdoor space, there was just a sliver of a galley kitchen. “Everything was painted drab yellow,” says Christina, and the couple’s furniture— which included pieces from Connor’s bachelor pad—needed updating. They added a new kitchen, a playroom, and a laundry room, and worked with designer Cara Scarola to make things bright and cozy. Translation: exuberant fabrics and wallpaper, shaggy rugs, and just enough pink accents for a family with four girls. “There is so much life in this house,” says Christina. “It’s bold, and that’s how we live. We don’t dwell on things.” Oh, and there are zero sharp edges in sight: “I definitely don’t need to do stitches at home!”

house tours

Just another chat with Haddie who, says Christina, “talks from the minute she wakes up until the minute her eyes close at night.”

kitchen

It’s where most family meals happen, and a 10-foot-long Caesarstone quartz island is the perfect setup for Sunday night top-your-ownspaghetti bar. Rough-hewn fir on its base, along with on the shelves and the range hood, gives an infusion of warmth. The dashes of blue in the Urban Electric Co. pendants and vintage rug have Southwestern flair. “Turquoise blue is associated with jewelry iconic to Santa Fe,” says designer Cara.

living room

A mix of patterns and finishes—in the gold wallpaper by Hygge & West and Arteriors side table, pinstripe Room & Board sofa, and floral fabric by Andrew Martin on the ottoman—have style and spark. The shag rug by DwellStudio is fluffy underfoot but was also chosen, says Christina, “to hide the fact that we have kids. There’s probably a lost tooth hiding in there!”

bathroom

For her opinionated daughters, Christina wanted a strong look. That led to the penny tile heart design, spiky gold chandelier from Arteriors, and edgy diamond-pattern tile from Original Mission Tile. A built-in storage cabinet was a must. It’s not always this organized, says Christina, “but I can at least close the lower part.”

playroom

“The whole room started with the fuchsia sectional I owned—the color is just so joyful,” says Christina. (It’s where Ella’s been curling up with a favorite read that hits close to home, Little Women.) Cara brought in wallpaper from Anthropologie and a pink-and-white table set from Serena & Lily, right-sized for tea parties. The fun rug is from Unique Loom.

Roar! Although Haddie is the youngest, “she is the boss and dictates the games,” says Christina.

ella’s bedroom

She’s known for her flair for the dramatic and love of theater and dance. Ta-da! A room that could be a stage backdrop, with flamboyant brambly House of Hackney wallpaper and a dusky velvet bed from Anthropologie. Some nights, the three oldest girls have piled in here, says Christina, “and all I’d see is a tangle of arms and legs.”

main bedroom Obviously, Christina has a thing for flowery wallpaper, and she chose an Ellie Cashman design with the biggest blooms of the bunch for her hideaway. As in other rooms, blackand-white elements offer balance. The calm is enhanced by soft pieces, like a custom embossed velvet bed and a bench with fabric from Romo.

Christina and Connor often kick back in this spot while the kids run around. It may be right off the kitchen, but a tiled fireplace and jumbo flowerpots create a great escape.

Summer never ends in this Florida home. Also infinite: the inspiration. Lots of people dream about moving to the beach. Holly and Mike Izard took the plunge, leaving behind Northeast winters for balmy Atlantic Beach, FL, and Mike and Holly with rounding out Margaux, 7, and Julien, 4 the fantasy by having a house built there in 2019 for their family. “We wanted a more active lifestyle all year long that included biking, swimming, and surfing,” says Holly. Their home, located a few blocks from the beach, fully embraces its identity with woven textures, light woods, and nearly every shade of blue under the sun. “It’s practically a neutral when you live on the coast,” she says. Designer Lauren Leonard helped steer rooms to be less traditionally nautical and more lighthearted with waves of pattern. The result is, says Holly, “a vacation home we never have to leave.” PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATIE CHARLOTTE STYLED BY ELIZABETH DEMOS

house tours Coastal cool: An aluminum roof can withstand salty air, and the porch’s three shutter panels between the columns offer a bit of shade.

breakfast nook A true vacation at home means never having to scrub off food stains. Designer Lauren had the bench cushion fabric, from Lee Industries, laminated for easy cleanup. Bistro chairs from Ballard Designs are also wipeable. Serendipity: The base of the CB2 table they already owned had a sunlike shape.

kitchen “This space feels like a retreat whether I’m pouring a glass of wine or making PB&Js for the millionth time,” says Holly. A glossy blue-green ceramic tile backsplash (by Wizard Enterprise) shimmers like light hitting the ocean. Pale oak floors and RH stools, with pendants by Visual Comfort above, bring beachiness too. Says Lauren, “They’re coastal without going overboard.”

dining room It’s all casual elegance, emphasis on casual—the room is mainly used for bracelet making and Play-Doh creations. Botanical touches, like the leafy Serena & Lily wallpaper, are a natural fit. Simple frames keep the gallery wall from looking too busy on top of it. (The largest print shows the region in Southwest France where Mike is from.) For a cozy lounge area, a sectional and a rocking chair surround a big coffee table, and there’s a soft wool and denim rug, also from Serena & Lily.

main bedroom “Life as parents is busy, and at the end of the day we needed to walk into a quiet room,” says Holly. Decor conducive to decompressing that’s no yawn: block-print Euro pillows (with Kravet fabric) complemented by the smaller-scale geometric print (by Thibaut) on the bench. Holly uses it when folding laundry—can’t escape from that!

margaux’s bedroom It had to be her favorite color. For longevity’s sake, purple got a sophisticated spin with shades of green. “But I also wanted elements to spark Margaux’s imagination,” says Holly. Curvy gourd lamps from One Kings Lane and nightstands with carved-flower fronts from Anthropologie bring the magic.

kids’ bathroom Brushing teeth is almost fun with a perky vanity (painted Blithe Blue by Sherwin-Williams) and porthole-esque mirrors. Hung on the low side, they’ll be raised as the kids grow. Rather than doing a full wall of shiplap-style boards, Lauren had the idea to make it half wallpaper, and they picked one by Quadrille with a bold aqua color. The floor is tile but matches the light wood floors in the rest of the house.

tephanie Watkins loves how lush plants can make an indoor space feel, but she doesn’t have the green thumb to care for that many. So when she and her husband, Damian, renovated their kitchen, they planted a patch of…wallpaper. “It may only be on one wall, but it infuses the whole room with the Caribbean feel I was after,” says Stephanie, who lives in Aberdeen, MD, and runs the popular home design blog Casa Watkins Living. A white backsplash and cabinetry, glass-front doors, and open shelving create airiness in the space, which had been weighed down by dated cabinets and countertops. Orange accents pollinate the shade in the wallpaper. It’s kind of like living in a garden—without all the watering!

wallpaper

It took a good year for Stephanie to find her dream design, by Milton & King. “I was looking for a very specific feeling and color combo—tropical paradise, in orange and teal,” says Stephanie. “When I saw it, I thought,This needs to be on my wall immediately! It makes the space.”

tiles

Subway tiles are laid in a basket-weave pattern. “It has wow factor, but it’s still simple enough that it doesn’t take away from the wallpaper,” says Stephanie. Aged brass sconces by Hudson Valley Lighting on either side of the hood and other metal details in the room shed warmth.

island

At first Stephanie debated mixing white cabinets with stained ones and a stained island. Ultimately, she liked the way the chestnut hue made them look like furniture. Deep orange barstools from Wayfair pick up the wallpaper’s flowers and serve as homework perches. The coordinating runner is by Safavieh.

They lend a punchy and personal touch. “I like to be surrounded by things that are a part of my family’s history,” says Stephanie. On display: a rotation of keepsakes collected during trips, and pottery picked up at thrift stores and HomeGoods.

MAKES 6 SERVINGS

cantaloupe-basil slushies 1 6-pound cantaloupe Simple syrup (recipe below) 2 large sprigs fresh basil

cutting board Dexas Watermelon 17 1/4"-wide polypropylene cutting board, $15, worldmarket.com

watermelon-lime slushies 1 6- to 7-pound watermelon Simple syrup (recipe below) Zest of 2 limes Juice of 4 limes (about 1/2 cup total)

honeydew-ginger-mint slushies 2 4-pound honeydew melons Simple syrup (recipe below) 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger 4 sprigs fresh mint

1. Pick 1 melon from above, remove the skin and seeds, and cut into 2-inch pieces (you should be left with about 4 pounds total). 2. Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1/4 cup water, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer (don’t stir) until the sugar dissolves, 2 to 3 minutes.

glasses Sun Squad Neon acrylic glasses, $10 for a mixed set of 4, target.com

knife Kuhn RIkon Watermelon stainless steel and polypropylene knife, $20, crateandbarrel.com

3. Remove from the heat and stir in the flavorings (everything but the melon); let cool completely. Strain into a small bowl or measuring cup. 4. In a blender, working in 2 batches, puree half the simple syrup mixture and half the melon until smooth. Strain into a metal loaf pan or square pan; repeat with remaining syrup and melon. Cover and freeze until set, about 8 hours. 5. When ready to serve, using a fork, scrape the surface of the melon ice to create large flakes. Transfer to glasses, top with a splash of soda water, and serve with additional fruit, if desired. HGTV Magazine 103
