So far, I’ve treated myself to a couple of sunloungers so at least I can contemplate all of the renovations required indoors from a comfortable spot! HOME BAKERY
What started as a hobby in 2015 has become a full-time career for Alix, @mykitchendrawer on Instagram, who is now a baker, food photographer and author of multiple cookbooks. As her baking skills and projects grew, so did her requirements for a bigger kitchen – and more drawers! With this in mind, Alix turned to Wren to help her design and create the perfect, bespoke place to develop her baking business. At the top of Alix’s wish list for her reimagined space was a kitchen island. ‘It’s always been a dream of mine to have an island, as it’s the central hub of a kitchen and is the perfect space for me to prepare all my baking,’ Alix reveals. As well as an island, storage for all of her baking

equipment and a feeling of airiness were top priorities, as much of Alix’s day would be spent in the room. With these must-haves established, Alix could focus on her search for the perfect kitchen.

textures and colours available to decide which style of units and worktops would work best in her kitchen. She selected Shaker Forest units in a classic pairing of Alchemy and Shadow and complemented them with a Quartz Treviso worktop. ‘I opted for Shaker Forest doors for the units as I loved how traditional they look and combined them with Quartz for the worktops and island as the surface would be perfect for baking and cleaning up afterwards,’ says Alix. When creating the layout, Alix’s Wren Designer devoted an entire wall to baking, maximising storage to ensure the room felt airy and light. ‘My favourite part of the kitchen is my baking wall, as it has space for all of my ingredients and baking equipment. The Designer was great as he really helped me to get the most out of this space, without it feeling cramped,’ explains Alix. With integrated Bosch self-cleaning ovens, a warming drawer to prove the dough and a combination microwave, Alix’s bespoke kitchen is packed with practical touches, too.

Cleverly designed around Alix’s needs for storage, high-end appliances and airiness, her kitchen has helped Alix to focus on her career and take her baking to the next level. From easy-wipe Quartz worktops and island storage to impressive appliances, the kitchen has been designed with baking in mind. ‘My top tip for any keen bakers out there who are looking to redo their kitchen is that you can never have too much storage!’ shares Alix. With her dream kitchen now in place, Alix has everything she needs close to hand when creative inspiration takes hold. ‘This kitchen has completely transformed my life. It’s now so much easier and more fun to bake with all of this space. I have the island, baking wall and fantastic self-cleaning oven – I couldn’t be happier with my kitchen,’ smiles Alix.

MY STORY
The house was in a state of neglect when we bought it. However, it had so much potential with its amazing high ceilings and tonnes of period features. I wanted an old property with a story, but I also wanted something that I could renovate to my taste, so it ticked all the boxes. The house was also in a great location. This part of east London has a real community feel, so I knew it would make a perfect family home. I had a clear idea of what I would do design-wise within five minutes of walking through the door. We lived with the space for a few years before any major work started because I wanted to see how we
used each room and what the light was like. We decided to extend at the back of the house into the side return and out into the garden to create a bright, open kitchen. The renovation took six months and we moved out for two of them. I didn’t want to play it safe; I wanted to see if I had an eye for design. I absolutely love what I have created, proving that you have to be true to your own taste. I feel like I’ve rescued a run-down period property and created a modern family home by putting my own stamp on it. There are no formalities in this house. It’s a kick off your shoes, step over the dog and dance like no one is watching kind of home and I love it.
A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Natalie Lee, the author behind lifestyle blog, Style Me Sunday, and founder of the Warrior Woman campaign. I went from being a full-time midwife to a fashion blogger and body confidence advocate. I live with my two young daughters and our loveable family pets. WHERE I LIVE My home is a traditional Victorian terrace in the heart of east London. I bought the house in 2009 and fell in love with its potential to create the home of our dreams. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE There was lots of scope to open up the ground floor, so I wanted to create a bright open-plan kitchen and dining area. Having an open space was really important for us as a family as my eldest daughter has a rare genetic eye condition called Brittle Cornea Syndrome. Her impaired vision was an important consideration when designing the ground floor. I wanted there to be enough room for the girls to run around as safely as possible. It was an ambitious overhaul to create the space we wanted as a family, but it has transformed the house. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN I love using colour. In fashion, I use it to convey how I’m feeling or change how I’m feeling. If I wake up a bit low, I’ll often put on a bright lipstick and a playful outfit to get me out of the lull. At home, I’ve used colour throughout the house to reflect my personality. I’ve gone for a Palm Springs-style vibe with lots of pinks, lilacs and gold accents. MY FAVOURITE PART The kitchen has become the hub of our house. It’s where we cook and eat together but it’s also where we love to do dance classes and roller skate. The open-plan layout is perfect for a roller disco!

Before you start knocking down walls, consider these points Think about how you want to use your kitchen space. Do you want to include a dining and living area? Will it be your main space for socialising? What do you want from your new kitchen that’s missing from your current one? Having clear objectives will help you reach the end goal. Write a wish list. Have you always wanted a pantry space, island or a utility area of your own? Now’s the time to go for it and make the dream a reality. Get lots of quotes for the work. The more quotes you get, the better idea you’ll have of what the work should cost. Consider where you want to extend. Extending at the rear or side of your home could give you lots of extra space, or a side return extension or extending over a garage might be all you need. Check if you need planning permission. You could be covered under Permitted Development, but you can get the all-clear from a local planning authority.

‘When you enter the kitchen from the hallway, there’s a wall of full-height IKEA cupboards, which store everything from coats and gym kits to scooters and even a washing machine. It’s an absolute life-saver. Because my eldest daughter is partially sighted, I chose cupboard doors that are textured and have knobs, instead of the push magnetic system. I love our pink concrete worktops and handmade island, with childfriendly rounded edges, that were custommade by Smith & Goat. The brick walls are all painted in a bright white to reflect the natural light from the bi-fold doors and to allow the colourful art to pop. The artwork is an eclectic mix of prints, including some of my children’s drawings, which I intend to keep adding to.’

‘The living room is divided into two parts. The front half is a dark, cosy space where we curl up and watch TV together in the evenings. I like how the dark walls contrast with the traditional white shutters from Shutterly Fabulous and vibrant accessories. ‘The dark sitting room leads into another much brighter space, painted in Powdered Clay by Crown Paints. I’ve gone for a 1970s laid-back look in here. I don’t take myself too seriously and I think that’s reflected here; this room is all about fun! My fabulous peacock chair is from Oliver Bonas and I’ve thrown a pink sheepskin rug from Rockett St George over it to add texture. With the variety of textures and colours, including the wooden floors and sumptuous throws, it’s created a lovely cocooning effect. My woven hanging chair, also from Rockett St George, and cosied up with a MADE.com sheepskin, is just beside the kitchen and I often enjoy an evening drink in this little nook. The distressed drinks table is a vintage find and I’ve hung my oversized ‘Magnifique’ print from Gayle Mansfield above it for a personal touch. ‘This is my calm space, a sanctuary of my own. I’ve tried to keep a pared-back look in this room. Furniture throughout the house is a blend of vintage and new, and this room is no exception. My mid-century dresser was a lucky charity shop find that I’ve decorated with some fairy lights. I love how one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure – obviously that should be woman! I’ve hung gold vintage frames and have personal objects on display, including some of my favourite outfits; things that I’ve collected over time. The walls are white and the room is flooded with light, so it’s a perfect spot to dress up and experiment with my fashion styling. The ‘Hell Yes’ print is another great design from Gayle Mansfield and the rock and roll Ziggy cushion is from Sarah Baily. My original 1970s yellow lamp was a lucky win on eBay. I love having pieces in my home that have a little bit of a past.’

‘Motherhood has taught me that there is no bigger responsibility in the world than raising children, and I’m a big believer in positive affirmations. They are written all over both my girls’ rooms. The children’s rooms are forever evolving as they grow, but I think I’ve kept that same sense of fun in both of their bedrooms. The wallpaper and leopard-print curtains are from Wild Hearts Wonder. My girls love the storage lockers, which are from Mustard. I’m always amazed at the amount of stuff they both accumulate and these are great for hiding all of the mess.’ Natalie gave her girls ownership of decorating their rooms. WHAT I LEARNED...
I’m so glad I lived in the space for a few years before starting any major work. We waited because I wanted to see how we used each room and what the light was like, but also because of the diagnosis of my eldest daughter. Her impaired vision completely changed my original ideas. I’ve now created a space where she can skip and roller skate around freely and safely. The girls and I had to move out for two months during the renovations and this wasn’t something I had taken into consideration. When we moved back in, we didn’t have a proper working kitchen so we had to microwave meals in one of the bedrooms. It was a huge undertaking. Obviously, I’m glad we did it as we have our dream kitchen, but I wouldn’t be rushing to do another renovation anytime soon! Rearranging a space instantly refreshes it. Switch up lampshades and bases and swap out cushions on different chairs. Paint old picture frames a new colour and hang artworks that have been forgotten about lying under your bed.

You will need
● Template ● Paper ● Scissors ● Faux leather fabric ● Pins ● Velour fabric ● Sewing machine ● Cotton thread ● 40cm square cushion pad Go to yourhomestyle.uk and print the lightning bolt template onto paper and cut out. Place the template pieces onto the faux leather and pin in place. Cut around the template then remove the pins. Next, measure and cut out one 42cm square and two 42 x 30cm rectangular pieces of velour fabric. Set the two rectangular pieces of fabric aside. Pin the faux leather lightning bolt to the velour square, and neatly stitch in place. Take one of the rectangular pieces of fabric, and fold and press a double hem along one of the 42cm sides with an iron. Sew the hem in place, and repeat with the second piece. Next, lay the rectangular pieces on top of the square piece, with the hemmed edges overlapping each other, and pin in place. Sew all the way round. Finally, turn the cushion cover right sides out and put the cushion pad inside.

Indeed, if all 28 million homes in Britain made the switch tomorrow, Energy Saving Trust estimates we could save 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. But it’s not just about bulbs. Smart innovations like Alexa allow us to create pre-set looks for our rooms to match our mood in a way that was only once possible in custom-built houses, while solar-powered outdoor lighting has helped us make the most of our gardens at night without using extra energy.

Another simple change we can make around the home is getting a smart meter installed by your energy supplier. Its handy in-home display allows you to see how much energy you’re using, as well as how much it’s costing you in pounds and pence. That means when you start making changes around the home, like switching to LED bulbs, you should soon start to see the benefits with your own eyes. By getting a smart meter, you’ll be joining the millions of people across Britain who are doing their bit to reduce energy waste on a national scale. A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Gill Corrigan and I work for Shannon Heritage. I live here with my husband, Bryan, a prison officer, and my four children, my twin boys, Ethan and Jessie, 13, Lilah, nine, and Ellie, three. I post interior updates on my Instagram @rowans_rainbow. WHERE I LIVE My home is a three-bedroom 1930s bungalow near Adare in County Limerick. It’s down the road from my mother’s, which is very handy for babysitting. We’ve lived in this house for three years. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE The magnolia-painted walls and shabby carpets had to go. The house didn’t need any major renovation work, but I was keen to make it feel like a home and freshen up the tired décor. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN I put my creative stamp on the place by introducing lots of colour with murals, accessories and plants. MY FAVOURITE PART I love the dining area with the French doors looking out to the garden. It’s a lovely space where we can all sit, eat and be together.

First, we painted the whole place white, ripped out the old carpets in the bedrooms and fitted laminate flooring. We didn’t have the funds to replace the kitchen, so we just updated the red tiles by painting them in an aqua colour. Once I had a blank canvas to work with, I set about making my mark with the interiors, which all started in the children’s rooms. You can be very creative in these spaces and I encouraged the children to come up with ideas. This is where my journey started really, and I haven’t looked back!

MY STORY
We were keen to get on the property ladder and wanted to stay in this area. We’d been looking for some time, but nothing ticked the right boxes until we spotted this cottage. It was over our budget, but we took a look at it and instantly fell in love. Although it was a bit dated, it had a lovely feel to it. The previous owners had extended to one side and created a large, spacious living area with the kitchen on one side. The big windows had a great view onto the garden and made the whole space feel lovely and bright. The house had been on the market for a while, so we put in an offer that was

Then I moved onto painting murals and introduced more colour with the larger pieces of furniture, like the sofa. I used to have a neutral grey sofa in this room but then my mother needed a sofa, so I gave it to her, which gave me a good excuse to splash out on a luxurious pink velvet sofa. The hand-painted mural on one wall adds instant interest to the dining area. ‘I love this part of the house,’ says Gill. ‘There’s plenty of room for us all to sit around the table; the bench is perfect for the children and keeps the space looking open and uncluttered. The space is quite tight, which made it hard to decorate, but I got around it by going for a few hanging plants. I’ve added more interest with lettering from Perfectly Crafty and a selection of colourful baskets. I hung the same zigzag curtains that I found for the living room in this spot as well.’

Transform your walls with geometric shapes HOW TO...
Get it right first time round Plan your mural on paper before transferring to the walls. This allows you to do a trial run of drawing the mural, measuring and getting your angles right first. You can also pick your paint colours in advance and add them to your sketch to see where each colour will go and to make sure the colours complement each other. Use tester pots to save money. Sketch the mural first on the wall rather than painting it free-hand. It’s helpful to use a super sharp pencil and a spirit level. If you’re including triangles, chevrons or diagonals, make a template to use to ensure every angle is the same. It’s very important to use good-quality painting tape like Frog tape as your usual masking tape won’t work. Tape in sections going over the pencil lines and use a spirit level to ensure the lines stay straight. The first step is to paint over all the outer edges with a base colour – this should be your wall colour – as this prevents the other colours bleeding under the tape and gives the cleanest lines. Then continue with the colours. Always do at least two coats and remove the tape when the paint is still slightly wet to prevent peeling. Faux plant in rattan basket, Primark

‘As we were on a tight budget, there wasn’t much we could do in this room. Everything was pretty neutral when we first moved in, so we introduced colour with our choice of aqua tile paint. We applied two coats to make sure it was properly sealed. I really wanted some more colour in this room and my much-loved yellow microwave, from Swan, which took me ages to find, was exactly what it needed. I’d love to redo the kitchen to make it a bit more modern, but for now, it’s on our to-do list.’

‘I recently redecorated this room. I kept the overall colour white, painting black stripes around the room and introduced pattern and colour with my choice of bed linen, accessories and artwork, with zigzag and striped cushions from Happy Friday. As the artwork and bed linen are quite busy, I stuck to plain white handleless bedside lockers and a simple yellow cabinet from Argos for extra storage. The colourful crochet throw was made by my sister. She’s very talented and made all the crochet throws that are dotted around the house,’ reveals Gill.
‘I’ve had this headboard for years so I decided to reupholster it with a striking yellow fabric I found on Amazon. The side light and table are both from IKEA and the zigzag rug is from Oxendales. ‘The bathroom was perfectly functional and didn’t need replacing, but I must admit, I would love to have a larger space with a bath, so this is on our to-do list, funds permitting. I couldn’t let any room go untouched when it comes to colour. As it’s such a small room I just introduced a pop of colour with some simple artwork and self-adhesive vinyl stripes that I stuck to the back wall of the room. I found a simple white mirror in IKEA, which I hung above the basin to keep the look clean and fresh.’ Gill kept the original décor in the bathroom and gave it a quick update with a rug from IKEA and potted plants

‘Rather than painting a mural in here, I decided to introduce wallpaper and a bit of colour blocking behind the bed. Anything goes in this room, as long as it’s colourful the girls love it, so we’re constantly adding to it with throws and artwork. WHAT I LEARNED...
It can be hard to know where to start when it comes to adding colour to your home, but I found starting small really helped. I began with colourful candles and plant pots and added pompoms to stuff I already had, and it helped build my confidence to try colour on a bigger scale. If you can, start with the kids’ rooms. There is no room in the house that’s more fun and easier to add colour to. You can let your imagination run wild and let the kids join in with picking colours and accessories too. Don’t forget paper decorations like pompoms and lanterns, which are high impact and low cost! Even if you love colour, you still need a few neutral elements thrown in. Keeping the bones of your home neutral makes adding colour with accessories much easier.

MY STORY
Saving for our first place after graduating uni seemed never-ending, but we finally managed to get on the property ladder and bag this one-bedroom flat. A big selling point was, because it’s a new-build, it didn’t need any major work, which was important to us as we didn’t have the funds to renovate or take on a fixer-upper. The kitchen and bathroom were both modern and it meant we wouldn’t have any fuss with our first home. We moved in just before Christmas in 2019, so the very first thing in the place was a Christmas tree! Back then my taste was quite different, and I wanted chic
monochrome décor. Since then my style has evolved a lot and I started adding more character with vintage pieces and countrystyle buys; this set it apart from other small, boxy one-bed flats. Decorating wasn’t easy, as new-builds are known for paint that chips and crumbling dry walls. I even used extra delicate painter’s tape, but it still managed to rip the paint off. I managed it in the end though, and what with the new paint colours, wall panelling and rustic styling, I’ve managed to create a really individual, sustainable home. People walk in and can’t believe it’s a new-build, which is something I’m really proud of. The cabinets in the kitchen are from Magnet, and although they’re slightly more modern than Tilly would like, she’s added lots of vintage touches to give the space more character. The dining chairs were an eBay find for just £6.75

Part of one large open-plan room, the kitchen consists of units and appliances along one wall. ‘I’ve tried to keep the tones in the dining and living space sympathetic to the kitchen cabinets,’ says Tilly, ‘as it helps the room to flow better’. Light colours and rustic wood touches help create the neutral French style that Tilly loves. ‘Hanging the shelves above the dining table turned out to be more of a task than I had first anticipated,’ she says. ‘I tried to do them myself, but it involved drilling through a double dry wall and using some hefty wall anchors, so I had to call my dad to help out. With his expertise, they were done in an afternoon – I just supplied the tea!’

Bag a bargain with these top tips… Vintage shopping can be overwhelming as there’s so much choice, so it’s good to have an idea in mind of what kind of thing you’re after. It will help you narrow down your choices and stay focused. If you’re shopping for furniture, make sure you measure up. There’s nothing worse than buying something only to find it’s too big or small for your space. If you’re visiting a car boot or antiques fair, take a tape measure with you so you can make sure it’s the right fit. If you’re new to vintage shopping, start off small with little accessories such as picture frames, artworks, vases or books. Even little items can add history to your shelves or display space. Love the idea of vintage but don’t want your home to look like a charity shop? Mix your pieces in with high street buys – guests will be hard-pressed to guess which is old and which is new. The great part about shopping vintage is that the prices are usually low, so if you get bored of something, you can simply resell or donate without the guilt.

‘Styling the living room was probably the hardest job as it’s a weird shape,’ says Tilly. ‘For a while I thought I’d never be happy with it. Luckily, after I had replaced most of the furniture and added a few features it’s come together nicely. IKEA’s FÄRLÖV range has always been on my bucket list and I managed to buy an armchair, which always seemed to be out of stock. I also installed some wall panelling, which was the easiest DIY project I’ve done. At Christmas, I kept seeing pictures of homes with lovely styled-up mantelpieces and it made me really want my own, so I added a fireplace and then used stick-on vinyl to give the effect of tiles. My best idea, though, was covering the grey carpet with a rug – you can’t get more rustic than jute!’

‘I love vintage and antiques so most of my dream furniture is love at first sight’
Tilly has created a tranquil feel in the bedroom, with a large antique wooden bed taking centre stage, and light-coloured walls providing the perfect backdrop for her pared-back scheme. Wooden wall units sit neatly in the corners to display accessories, while wall carvings above the bed add more character. An ottoman provides storage and a handy place for cushions at night. ‘Our bed is from eBay,’ says Tilly. ‘I wanted something unique that made a statement, as I wasn’t going to be adding any features to the walls. A full fourposter bed would’ve taken up too much space as the room is quite small, but the benefit of a half-poster bed is that you get the height and grandeur, but it doesn’t take up quite as much vertical space.’

Tilly bought her bed from eBay for just £100. ‘It was so beautiful and unique. I couldn’t pass up on the chance to buy it, but I hadn’t really thought about how I would get it home,’ she says. ‘It wouldn’t fit in my car and it was an hour’s drive away. Luckily my parents agreed to help me, and we strapped it to the top of their car – we half-thought we’d lose it on the way home in the wind!’ The bedside tables are from Wayfair

Hallway

The gorgeous green-coloured hallway makes a striking statement when you first walk into Tilly’s flat and is nothing like what you’d expect from this uber-modern building. ‘This was the first room I decorated, and I was desperate to include some wallpaper,’ says Tilly. ‘The hallway, being such a narrow space, seemed like the perfect place to start, so I panelled the walls halfway and hung wallpaper above them. Eventually, I’d like to redecorate this space with something brighter. Now that I’ve decorated the rest of the flat in lighter colours, it feels slightly too dark and breaks up the flow between rooms.’ The dresser, at the end of the hallway, was a bargain from Facebook Marketplace.
Bathroom
The bathroom is the one room that Tilly hasn’t done much to, but she has plans to panel the side of the bath and replace the basin and taps. ‘I’ve added some vintage pieces to the room for now,’ she says, ‘including a fantastic antique chair that I found in my grandparents’ loft. It’s got lots of charm and is my greatest treasure. It’s difficult to make this modern bathroom feel characterful and rustic, as three walls are tiled from top to bottom, and there’s a huge built-in mirror. I’d like to add some botanical prints to the one painted wall in the room and a vintage-style sink on a dresser converted into a washstand would be amazing! That’s something I’ll have to wait for until I find the perfect piece of furniture to DIY.’ Rectangular-shaped beige tiles line the bathroom walls, with standard white fittings that were all part of the new-build décor. WHAT I LEARNED...
When you’re painting walls, take off your masking tape while the paint is still a bit wet – it stops the paint you just put on chipping right off, which it can do if completely dry. Watching YouTube tutorials is an easy way to pick up DIY and decorating skills, especially if it’s something you haven’t done before. For best results, watch them twice, so you don’t miss anything. Try not to leave jobs 95 per cent done. It’s so easy to walk away when the main bits are done, but the final touches really finish off a room.

You will need
● Bamboo skewer ● Wire wick ● Glasses or glass jars ● Scissors ● Large saucepan ● Old small saucepan ● Soya wax flakes (250g per 8x9cm glass) ● Essential oils ● Dried petals, rosemary or other herbs and spices ● Scissors First, cut a skewer in half, then cut a piece of wick about 4cm longer than the height of the glass jar and tie it onto the skewer piece. Balance it on top of the glass with the longer end of the wick dangling inside, and the shorter end pointing upwards. Quarter-fill a large saucepan with cold water. Place the wax into the smaller pan, and then place it inside the large pan. Gently bring the water to the boil, and simmer on a low heat until the wax melts. Add a few drops of essential oils to the molten wax and stir well. Carefully pour the wax into the jar. Add some dried petals or rosemary, then leave to cool at room temperature until the wax is solid. Finally, remove the skewer and trim the wick to 2cm with scissors.

or two, except for the spare box room and hallway. We did all the work ourselves on a tight budget. For instance, we did the entire kitchen makeover for about £150 and the other rooms have only really cost us what we’ve spent on paint and soft furnishings. I love finding hacks for changing up a style in a quick, affordable way and I love taking risks, like painting the dining room wall black or transforming the kitchen floor. Although each room has its own feel, I always use plants and quirky accessories to add personality. Looking back, the rooms are pretty identical to my Pinterest boards, so I definitely achieved what I set out to do.
A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Leanne Ward, an art studio manager for a ceramic printers. I live with my partner, Ashley Simpson, a teaching assistant, and our two pugs, Jinxy and Hudson. WHERE I LIVE Our home is a three-bedroom, 1930s semi-detached house in Alfreton, Derbyshire. We’ve lived here since February 2020. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE The house had been well looked after but there was lots of floral wallpaper and the dark oak kitchen with fruitdesign tiles wasn’t my style. ‘I was originally planning to scrape off the red and cream wallpaper in here, but I got impatient and just painted over the top. Wallpapering is such a big job, it seemed easier. At first, I went for a quick coat of cream to cover the pattern, then used Dulux’s Blush Pink. I was too scared to go full-on dark green across the top part, so I used a darker pink above the picture rail at first. It didn’t take long before I got brave and painted it in Johnstone’s Ivy Sky, which I think works so much better. Plants feature heavily in every room. In the corner there’s a giant Dracaena fragrans plant, which cost £50 on Facebook Marketplace. The seller said it was eight years old, so there’s a lot of pressure to keep it alive! It’s my favourite thing in the room and makes such a statement. The colourful art print from Juniqe brings everything together.’

HOW TO...
Paint kitchen units
Whether you have a laminate or wood kitchen, painting the cabinets is an easy weekend DIY project that can totally transform your room You don’t necessarily need to take all the doors off and if you don’t mind the inside of your cupboards staying the same colour, you could just paint the exterior to save time. First, cover tiles, appliances and worktops with masking tape and remove all the handles before cleaning the cupboard and drawer fronts with sugar soap. Next, lightly sand the surfaces with sanding blocks that will get into any corners and grooves. Use a good-quality small roller for the best finish, and a natural bristle paintbrush for harder-to-reach areas. Apply a thin layer of wood primer and allow to dry for four-to-six hours. Once it’s dry, you can apply your chosen paint to the cupboard fronts first, then move onto the trims. A second or third coat might be needed for the best finish. Pick a satinwood paint or specialist furniture and cupboard paint or try Little Greene’s intelligent eggshell for a high quality washable low sheen finish. If you’re not confident about tackling the job yourself, there are several companies, such as National Resprays and The Kitchen Facelift Company, which will come and spray-paint your kitchen in a day. Not only will it give a professional finish, but it’s less messy and time-consuming.

‘We didn’t touch the brown wood kitchen until last Christmas as we had hoped to knock through to the dining room and install new units. It soon became clear we’d need to wait a while for builders, so we decided to save our money and go for a quick fix makeover instead. My first job was painting the terracotta hexagonal floor. I then added Rust-Oleum floor chips to give a terrazzo effect. I had seen a few painted kitchens on Instagram so opted for black to make it feel more modern. I took the doors off for the first few, but it was such a faff, so I finished the rest in situ. In total the whole makeover only cost about £150.’

Leanne’s a big fan of plants and has them dotted around every room. ‘My mum made lots of the hanging planters during lockdown,’ she says. ‘I love the double one, which I got in Cornwall, as it’s quite unusual’

‘When we first moved in, the idea was to have this room as a snug with a 70s vibe for listening to music. My friend helped me paint over the wallpaper with some brown paint for a retro feel, but we only got as far as the chimney breast before realising it was awful! I painted the picture rail black for contrast and tried a peach arch behind the dining table too. However, during lockdown we took the wallpaper off and did it all properly with goodquality lining paper. I think I’ve achieved the tribal jungle look I wanted with lots of rattan, plants and a few ceramic tigers.’
A black feature wall provides the perfect backdrop for Leanne’s forest wall hanging from Love Frankie and storage unit from Vasagle, while the compact dining table with benches from Argos is a real space saver. ‘The spotty rug from George Home was originally for the bedroom but it was much larger than I thought so it would only fit down here,’ adds Leanne
‘I painted the wooden fire surround black to start with, but it looks miles better white, as it makes the plants stand out more,’ says Leanne. The Crittallstyle mirror is from Home Bargains and the walls are painted in Johnstone’s Oatcake
Master bedroom
‘Over Christmas, we moved from the front to the back bedroom as it’s a lot quieter away from the road. When we took off the blue and brown floral wallpaper, the lining paper underneath was still good quality, so we painted the walls pink with a yellow stripe around the top. It wasn’t long before I fancied a change though as the colour scheme felt a bit childlike. I went more neutral, but that felt a bit too boring! To spice it up, I created a spotty animal print wall opposite the bed, which took two days. I started off using a stencil but then went freehand as it was hard to match up the shapes. Then I went even bolder with a nature-inspired wall mural on the side wall. I practised beforehand on paper to see what colours and shapes worked together and then scaled it up on the wall.’
Some clever upcycling has given these scratched drawers a new lease of life. ‘I considered wooden dowels on the front, but it would’ve been time-consuming to do, so I used wallpaper instead to give a similar effect.’ The gold shelves are from B&M

‘We haven’t changed much in the bathroom, but a few small tweaks have made a big difference. For instance, I didn’t like the marble-effect tiles, so I used white tile paint to cover them up. I wasn’t sure if it would look good against the off-cream suite, but it’s actually turned out well. Painting the textured wallpaper above in black has given it a more modern look, and it matches with the granite-effect shower panel opposite. Although we’d like to eventually replace the bathroom and install a bigger walk-in shower with a tropical spa feel, it suits us for now.’
Spare bedroom
‘We’ve gone for a relaxed boho 70s feel in here with lots of rattan. This is the only room where we needed to change the carpet and it’s made a huge difference as it was red with a floral pattern before. Luckily the cream and red wallpaper came off in full sheets when we stripped the room, which saved loads of time. There’s plenty of storage too since we kept the floor-to-ceiling mirrored wardrobes and have ottoman beds in both bedrooms.’
WHAT I LEARNED...
The old bathroom suite has been dressed up with an IKEA mirror, George Home bathmat and bath bridge. ‘To make a feature on the wall I created some storage using a spare bathmat and shower caddy,’ says Leanne
I try and buy items that work in most rooms so these can be easily transferable. Although I’m a lover of colour and pattern, I usually incorporate this through fabrics and accessories rather than wallpaper or bright-coloured paint. This way, if we fancy a change, I do a little ‘shop the home,’ swapping furniture around and bringing in different rugs and throws to change the colours up. I love high street shops for finding on-trend bargain pieces and mixing them with upcycled furniture and accessories. When you mix these with vintage and charity shop finds, you can create a more unique style.

You will need ● Jute placemats ● Paints ● Stencils ● Repositionable spray adhesive ● Circular objects ● Pencil ● Masking or washi tape ● Paintbrush ● Sponge ● Fringe trimming ● Glue gun For the stencilled plate, spray the back of the stencil with adhesive and allow to go tacky for a few minutes. Place it in the middle of the jute placemat and use a sponge to apply paint to the stencil. Remove the stencil and paint some spots around the edge. For the fringe-trimmed plate, first use differentsized circular objects to draw circles on the placemat with a pencil. Fill in with different colours of paint, and add some spots and lines and allow to dry. Take the fringe trimming and carefully stick around the edge of the placemat with a glue gun. To create the zigzag-effect plate, first mask off elongated triangle shapes on the placemat with tape, then paint with two different colours. Allow the paint to dry before removing the tape.

PERCALE OR SATIN WEAVE? A percale weave creates a crisp fabric with a matt finish so percale bedding is generally considered to be cooler on very hot nights. A satin weave gives the fabric a slight sheen and a silky feel. This bedding is slightly warmer than percale weave bedding and is better for cold nights.
DON’T LOSE YOUR THREAD! When looking for quality bedding,
we’re often faced with a baffling range of thread counts to choose from, but with a little knowledge these numbers are easy to decipher Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the more densely woven the material is. Standard cotton bedding usually has a thread count of around 150. Thread counts above 200 are generally considered to be high quality, and this relatively small jump in thread count will make a big difference to how your bedding feels. Unsurprisingly, the cost of bedding tends to go up as the thread count increases. Lower thread count bed linen has a light and airy quality, a smooth feel and dries quickly. It’s more budget friendly than higher thread count pieces but can be less hard-wearing, however you can still expect a 200 thread count sheet to last for years. Higher thread count fabric is denser and heavier, creating hard-wearing and long-lasting sheets that give you the feeling of sleeping in a 5 star hotel. However, they can take a long time to dry and are a pricier option. High thread count sheets are a real investment, so always try to get a feel of the fabric in-store before buying.

Carefully remove the old sling and studs from the deckchair frame. Use a sanding block to remove any old paint or varnish and smooth the surface, then wipe clean with warm soapy water. Allow to dry completely.

Paint the deckchair frame with two coats of exterior wood paint, leaving it to dry thoroughly between coats. You can choose to paint the frame all one colour, or get creative and use three different colours, inspired by the shades in the new sling fabric. Cut the new sling fabric to the same length as the old sling – this is usually around 150cm. Fold one short edge of the sling fabric over by 1cm to hide the raw edge. Attach this folded section to the underside edge of the top bar of the deckchair using a few staples to hold it in position. Starting at one edge, insert an upholstery stud on the underside of the bar and gently hammer it in. Put a stud in the centre, hammer it in, then put a stud at the other end and push it in place with a hammer. Fill the gaps between with the remaining studs – you should need around 10 studs in total. Fold the other short end of the fabric over by 1cm and feed this end around the bottom bar of the deckchair. Attach it with staples and studs in the same way as you did the top of the sling.

Upcycling challenge
To make the headrest, cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring 45 x 28cm. Cut two lengths of pompom trim, each measuring 45cm long. Cut two lengths of red and white tape, each measuring 50cm long. Lay one piece of fabric down on your work surface and place a length of pompom trim along the long edge with the pompoms facing inwards. Repeat with the other long edge. Fold each length of red and white tape in half and place the folded end 5cm in from the outer edges of the fabric, with the ends of the tape facing inwards. Place the second piece of fabric on top and pin into place. Carefully stitch a 1.5cm seam around three sides, leaving one short side open. Remove any pins and turn the headrest right side out. Using soft toy wadding, stuff to your desired firmness. Fold the open edge of the fabric over to the inside by 1.5cm and slip stitch the end closed using a needle and thread. Use the red and white tapes to tie the headrest to the deckchair frame with dramatic bows or elegant knots.

MY PROBLEM KITCHEN With a grey and beige colour scheme, the kitchen was so dated and not at all inspiring. We also had a damp issue, so we needed to strip all the tiles back anyway and thought we might as well give the whole space a proper revamp while we were at it. HOW I MADE IT WORK We had to fix the damp walls, which took a lot of the budget. To keep costs down, we decided to just change the kitchen doors since the carcasses were still in good condition. Our carpenter friend made up new doors that we painted in a soft black. We went pink with the wall tiles and we also swapped the wall-hung built-in cupboards for open shelving. MY FAVOURITE PART The new kitchen doors. They’ve made a huge difference to the whole kitchen and I’m delighted we were able to save the carcasses. WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT
Keep within your budget by hanging onto the carcasses and just change up the kitchen doors. Karen’s new doors were made from MDF and spray-painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings to tie in with the colour scheme in the hallway. She then customised the cabinets by attaching some brass door knobs she found online. Keeping the doors dark creates the perfect backdrop for Karen’s shiny pink tiles, which have a black grout to bring the look together.
Open shelving, rather than bulky wall cabinets, keeps the room looking spacious while still providing plenty of storage space. The display shelves allow Karen to show off her colourful kitchenware and plant pots and keep everything within easy reach. Rather than sticking to the same design, Karen has teamed an industrial-style shelving unit with wooden shelves and cast-iron brackets, giving the room extra character.
CREATE ZONES
Take advantage of a light-filled bay window by turning it into a cosy dining area. A round table works best for a tight space and you could even squeeze in more seating with a window bench. The green pendant light helps to zone the nook while colourful seat pads, in keeping with the colour scheme in the rest of the room, tie the look together. MY EXPERIENCE
When we moved in, the kitchen really wasn’t to our taste. It was dated and not at all in keeping with the rest of the house. I absolutely love colour, so the bland grey and beige kitchen was never going to stay for long. When we found out about the damp on the kitchen walls, we knew it was the ideal excuse to redecorate. When we started taking the tiles off the walls, we realised that whoever built the extension had used the wrong material to hold the bricks together. It was totally porous, so we had to strip back the whole kitchen to bricks, replaster and start again. A two-week job ended up taking about six. I’ve always loved a pink and green colour combo. The shades look so fresh and cheerful together, so I wanted to incorporate these colours into the new scheme. Our friend, Oli Jackson, is a carpenter and we discussed how just by changing the doors we could make a real difference, as well as saving us a lot of money by keeping the carcasses. To link in with the hallway, I decided to paint the new cupboard doors in Farrow & Ball’s Railings, a dramatic bluey-black matt paint. With the colours in mind, I chose pink wall tiles, paired with a black grout to highlight the shape and tie in with the units. Lastly, I got rid of the wall units and swapped these for open shelving to display my collection of green plants and colourful cups and plates. I’m so delighted we’ve managed to transform our kitchen without breaking the bank. It just goes to show what you can do with a bit of imagination.

RECYCLE AND REPURPOSE FURNITURE
Mel was keen to use her upcycling skills in the bathroom, as she has in other rooms in her house. This old chest of drawers, a bargain find from Facebook Marketplace, was bought with the intention of turning it into a vanity unit. After making sure it would fit the space, Mel brought it home and painted it in Antoinette chalk paint by Annie Sloan to fit with the rest of the scheme. She then gold leafed the handles to tie in with the mixer taps, before a plumber fitted a sink on top.
ADD CHARACTER TO YOUR WALLS
Panelling is a great way to disguise imperfect walls, as well as hide ugly pipework. After looking online, Mel came across The English Panelling Company who sell wall panels made from moisture-resistant MDF, making them practical for bathrooms. She chose a Victorian-style design and for another hit of colour, she painted them in Aquamarine Deep from Little Greene. ‘Wall panels were the perfect solution for our bathroom’, says Mel. ‘They add so much more character than simply just painting walls, and we knew we didn’t want tiles here’.
MAKE PRIORITIES
Many people love relaxing in the bath, but what’s the point of giving up precious space for a tub if a long hot soak isn’t your thing? With busy lifestyles, Mel and her family have always used the shower more, so they decided to get rid of the bathtub and free up space for a generous, walk-in shower instead. By adding a glass frameless shower screen – which helps create the illusion of space – and picking metallic appliances, Mel has added a little luxury to the family’s day-to-day routine, so it comes as no surprise that she doesn’t regret her choice. ‘We don’t miss the old bath one bit,’ she says. 106 yourhomestyle.uk

MY EXPERIENCE
This house needed a complete refurb when we first saw it. We were so excited to finally move into the home of our dreams but there was so much work to be done. John and I talked about what room we should tackle first, and we both thought that the bathroom should be top of the list. We agreed that having a finished bathroom was important to all of us while the rest of the house was being renovated. The first job was getting rid of the horrible brown carpet. We looked at different styles and decided early on that we didn’t want a glossy, clinical white design but something more decorative and colourful. For starters, I knew I wanted a pink floor. I had seen some gorgeous pink tiles online, so I called in some samples and it was love at first sight. John and I both loved the lilypad design and knew it would create a gorgeous statement. We looked at ways to update the walls and chose MDF panelling, which we then painted in a soft minty green shade. To add further interest, we teamed this with a tropical-print wallpaper, pulling both the pink and green together. The hexagon tiles in the shower area also got a splash of colour as we chose pink grout to highlight the shape. My best buy was the chest of drawers, which I bought for £45 on a local selling site, before painting it pink and adding a basin on top. We absolutely love the space now. In fact, it’s our favourite room in the house!

MY PROBLEM BEDROOM It was dark, damp and pretty miserable to be honest. There was ugly wood chip wallpaper on the walls and the electrics didn’t work, but it had a lovely big window and high ceilings, and it felt like a blank canvas I could run wild with. CREATE A COSY CORNER
‘I wasn’t sure what I’d use this alcove for until we got the bed in, but then it naturally lent itself to being a little den. I chose the canopy to create a contained space to sit in, and then built up the layers, starting with a soft rug to make the floor a bit more comfortable, and then piling the space full of cute cushions and one of Lana’s dolls. The colourful string of fairy lights makes it extra cosy at night and the perfect place to wind down before bedtime.’
CUSTOMISE A KITCHEN
‘I picked up this secondhand IKEA kitchen for £10 and decided to personalise it for Lana. I took off the handles and taps and sprayed them and the utensils gold. Then I painted the carcass to complement the walls and used sticky-back plastic for the work surface. Finally, I attached a piece of plywood to the back and pasted it with palm leaf wallpaper to create a splashback. A fun tea towel finishes the look.’
GO FOR BOLD
‘I wanted to add a striking design to the walls, so I upscaled the scalloped design. We drew a level line around the room using a laser and then attached three vinyl LPs to a piece of wood and hand stencilled the pattern around the room before painting it. When I got to the corners, I drew the same shape onto a paper template so I could bend it round the edge.’ The B&Q terrazzo wallpaper ties in with the colours in the rest of the room, and with no pattern matching, it’s easy to put up. 112 yourhomestyle.uk

MY EXPERIENCE
Lana is fun and creative and I wanted to reflect that when I started thinking about her next-stage bedroom. The space really needed an overhaul before we did anything, so we took it all back to brick, did a complete rewire, and had all the walls replastered, creating a blank canvas ready to design and decorate. I started planning in January 2020 and chose this gorgeous, deep coral paint for the walls, but the brand was really expensive, so I got it colour matched. But then lockdown happened, and the shops closed so the transformation got put on hold. It did give me time to think about the feel of the room, and consider designs and different colour palettes. I was inspired by the scalloped paint effect that was becoming popular, but I wanted a bold look so decided to make the half circles far larger than the traditional small ones I had seen online. By that stage, B&Q were doing click and collect, so I was able to order the paint, and I began working my way round the room painting the scalloped shapes. I toyed with the idea of painting the ceiling with Dalmatian spots, but when I found this terrazzo-style wallpaper I knew it would give the room that extra special something. Our decorator thought I was mad when I said I wanted it on the ceiling, but there was no pattern matching so it was easier to put up than he expected, thankfully. Once shops started to reopen, I was able to get furniture and dress the room with lots of colourful accessories. We’d kept the door closed while the work was being done to surprise Lana on her birthday. Her face, when she saw it, was a joy and made all the work and planning more than worthwhile.

PEPPERED STEAK AND POTATO SALAD

add the pasta to the boiling water and cook to packet instructions. 2 Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a pan on a low to medium heat. Add the chopped garlic to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden and soft. Add the chilli flakes. 3 Add the plum tomatoes, tomato purée and a pinch of salt to the pan. Stir carefully to combine and break the plum tomatoes with the back of a wooden spoon. Increase the heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until the pasta is ready. 4 Drain the pasta and add it to the tomato sauce, stirring to cover the pasta. Spoon into bowls and top with torn mozzarella, fresh basil leaves and a crack of black pepper.

Put all the ingredients in a jug with 3 tbsp water and whisk together, adding another 1 tbsp water, if needed, to get a drizzling consistency. Season to taste and set aside. VEGETARIAN 3 Brush the steaks with a little oil and sprinkle over half the ground black pepper. 4 Heat a griddle or frying pan over a high heat and cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until your liking. Transfer to a warm plate, cover and leave to rest while you prepare the salad. 5 Halve the potatoes and put in a bowl with the red peppers. Add the oil and remaining black pepper and toss to coat. Transfer to the hot griddle or frying pan and cook for 4-5 minutes on a high heat, turning occasionally, until tender and charred (you may need to do this in 2 batches). 6 Pile the watercress onto a serving platter. Thinly slice the steaks and add to the platter with the potatoes and red peppers. Drizzle over some of the dressing and serve the rest on the side. 118 yourhomestyle.uk

CHICKPEA BURGERS WITH CAULIFLOWER RAITA
PREP TIME 20 MINS COOK TIME 10 MINS SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS ● 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed ● 3 tsp curry paste ● 1 lemon, zest ● 10g fresh coriander, stems and leaves chopped ● ½ red onion, finely chopped ● 80g breadcrumbs ● 1 tbsp coconut oil For the cauliflower raita ● 300g cauliflower ● 150g natural yogurt ● ½ lemon, juice ● 10g mint leaves, finely chopped ● Salt ● Black pepper To serve ● 4 burger buns, toasted ● 4 tbsp mango chutney ● Baby gem lettuce, leaves separated ● 4 tbsp crispy fried onions METHOD
1 To make the burger mixture, place the chickpeas,
curry paste, lemon zest and fresh coriander in a food processor and blitz until the mixture comes together. If you don’t have a food processor you can mash the mixture with a fork instead. 2 Mix the red onion and breadcrumbs into the chickpeas and shape into 4 patties. 3 To make the raita, shave the raw cauliflower with a mandoline or sharp knife into thin slices and place in a bowl. Mix together the yogurt in a bowl with the lemon juice and mint, season to taste with salt and pepper and fold into the cauliflower. 4 Heat the coconut oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the burgers and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown on both sides. 5 Assemble the burgers by spreading the base of the toasted buns with mango chutney, then top with the lettuce followed by the chickpea patties. Pile the cauliflower raita on top of each burger and sprinkle with the crispy fried onions. Place the bun lids on top to serve.

ribbons in a large bowl. Finely shred half the basil leaves and add them to the courgettes along with half the lemon zest, the crushed garlic, ½ tsp salt, some pepper and olive oil. Toss everything together to evenly coat the courgettes. 3 Unroll the pastry and place it on the lined baking tray. Using the point of a sharp knife, score a line 1cm from the edge all the way around the outside of the pastry to form a frame. Prick the inside rectangle of pastry a couple of times with a fork, then spread the inside rectangle with the sundried tomato paste. Add the courgettes, piling them on top and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the courgettes are tinged golden brown and the pastry is cooked through. 4 Meanwhile, mix the ricotta cheese in a bowl with the remaining lemon zest and season. 5 When the pastry is out of the oven, add blobs of the seasoned ricotta, scatter over the remaining basil leaves and sprinkle over the pine nuts. Cut into slices, to serve.

MAPLE-GLAZED CHICKEN THIGHS WITH ASIAN SLAW

Season the chicken with a little salt and massage the marinade into the chicken thighs. 3 Put the chicken on the lined baking tray and cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes until cooked through and the chicken is golden brown and sticky on the outside. 4 While the chicken is cooking, prepare the slaw. Combine the finely shredded cabbage with the grated carrot, sliced radishes and spring onions in a bowl. PREP TIME 5 MINS COOK TIME 30 MINS SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS ● 400g baby new potatoes, cut into bite-sized chunks ● 1 aubergine, diced ● 1 red onion, diced ● 1 tbsp olive oil ● 40g sundried tomatoes, drained ● 20g Parmesan, grated ● 1 lemon, zest ● 4 thin-cut pork loin steaks ● 200g cherry tomatoes
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/
Gas Mark 6. Put the potatoes, aubergine and red onion in a large roasting tin. Add the oil, season and mix well. Roast for 20 minutes. 2 Meanwhile, blitz the sundried tomatoes, Parmesan and half the lemon zest to make a rough paste. Spread over the pork steaks, ensuring they are completely coated. 3 Put the coated pork steaks and tomatoes on top of the vegetables and roast for a further 10-12 minutes until the pork is cooked through. Serve with the remaining lemon zest.
RAINBOW PICNIC PIE
PREP TIME 30 MINS COOK TIME 1 HOUR 30 MINS, PLUS CHILLING AND COOLING SERVES 12 INGREDIENTS ● 700g frozen butternut squash chunks ● 2 onions, thinly sliced ● 6 garlic cloves, crushed ● 2 tbsp olive oil ● 1 tbsp dried thyme ● 700g shortcrust pastry ● Flour, for dusting ● 500g spinach ● 2 x 250g tubs ricotta ● 25g vegetarian hard cheese, grated ● 130g basil pesto ● 1 lemon, zest ● 25g panko breadcrumbs ● 460g ready-made roasted peppers, drained and thickly sliced ● 1 egg, beaten METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/
Gas Mark 6. Spread out the squash in a large roasting tin with the onions and garlic, drizzle over the oil, season and scatter with thyme. Toss to combine. Roast for 25-30 minutes until tender, tossing halfway through. Set aside to cool completely. 2 Meanwhile, roll out 500g pastry on a lightly floured surface to a 38cm circle. Lightly grease the base and sides of a 23cm round springform cake tin. Lift the pastry into the tin
and gently press into the base and sides to evenly line, leaving a 1cm overhang. Prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for at least 30 minutes, or up to 6 hours ahead. 3 Put the spinach in a saucepan, cover with boiling water and leave to wilt. Drain and rinse under cold water until cool; squeeze out as much water as possible. Put the spinach, ricotta, hard cheese, pesto and lemon zest in a bowl, season and mix well. 4 Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas Mark 5. Remove the chilled pastry case from the fridge and scatter half the breadcrumbs over the base. Arrange the roasted squash and onions on top. Top with the spinach mixture. Layer on the roasted peppers and scatter the remaining breadcrumbs. 5 Roll out the remaining pastry on a lightly floured work surface to a 24cm circle. Cover the pie and press the edges together to seal. Trim away any excess, then crimp all the way around. Brush the top of the pie with beaten egg. Make 3 incisions in the centre to allow steam to escape. Place the tin on a baking tray and bake for 1 hour or until the pastry is cooked and golden. 6 Leave to cool for at least 30 minutes before releasing from the tin. Transfer to a wire rack for 2 hours if serving warm, or leave to cool completely. Once cool, keep in an airtight container in the fridge.

CARROT CAKEY CINNAMON ROLLS
PREP TIME 30 MINS, PLUS PROVING COOK TIME 15-20 MINS SERVES 12 VEGETARIAN INGREDIENTS ● 550g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting ● 7g instant yeast ● 4g salt ● 80g carrot, peeled and grated ● 1 orange, zest ● 70g unsalted butter ● 70g light soft brown sugar ● 4 tsp ground cinnamon ● 40g raisins ● 40g walnuts, chopped For the glaze ● 3 tsp soft brown sugar ● 1 tsp malt extract ● 50ml water For the icing ● 50g unsalted butter, softened ● 50g icing sugar ● 1 tsp vanilla extract METHOD
1 Put the flour, yeast and salt into a large mixing bowl. Pour 300ml warm water
into a jug and add the grated carrot. Pour the carrot mix into the bowl and bring together to form a sticky dough. Cover and leave for 10 minutes. 2 Gently knead the dough in the bowl for 30 seconds, then cover and leave in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size (around 1 hour). Prepare a traybake tin with baking parchment. 3 Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and fold the dough in on itself a couple of times, to form a crude square. Roll the dough out to roughly 50 x 40cm. 4 Beat the orange zest into the butter and spread over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar. Dust with cinnamon and sprinkle over the raisins. Start at one of the shorter sides and tightly roll the dough into a long sausage. Using a sharp knife, cut the sausage into 12 pieces and arrange these in the tray, three across. Make sure the two ends have the cut side facing up. Cover with cling film and leave to rise until doubled in size in a warm place (about 45 minutes). 5 Preheat the oven to 220°C/Fan 200°C/Gas Mark 7. Bake the rolls for 15 minutes. 6 In a small saucepan, mix the glaze ingredients. Bring to a simmer until a syrup forms. Brush onto the buns while still warm. Sprinkle with the walnut pieces and leave to cool. 7 Beat the icing ingredients together in a bowl and transfer to a piping bag. We chat to Dutch designer Milou Neelen about the inspiration behind her beautiful prints and homewares

I launched five years ago, after working for years as a print designer and illustrator in Amsterdam. I thought of the name Hôtel Magique when designing artwork for a hotel vibe infused painting for my living room, and the word ‘magique’ gave me so much inspiration that I launched Hôtel Magique as a brand.

I have a background in graphic design and started painting after school. After exhibitions in Amsterdam, ELLE magazine reached out to use one of my paintings as an illustration for one of their articles, and in that same month I started my first job as a pattern designer at the women’s line of Dutch fashion brand, Scotch & Soda. After three years working full time, I started freelancing before launching Hôtel Magique.
Describe your typical day…
Where do you find your inspiration?
Anywhere and everywhere! Nature, a movie, a sentence from a book, a colour combination on the street. But it’s always infused by summer and a dream hotel in mind.
Who are you following on Instagram?
I follow @annapihan for high summer infused photography and I’m very excited to have launched our first book together, The Pleasure of Leisure, in May, which is available on my website! For interiors, I love @serge_castella.
What’s your proudest career moment so far?
Literally every moment. From launching the actual brand to working together with amazing artists and brands like Anthropologie, to every shoot and new artwork.
What does the rest of this year hold?
