Bloom-Free Bouquets

Alyssa Rosenheck Photography.

For an eye-catching and budget-friendly centerpiece, think beyond seasonal flowers, says photographer Alyssa Rosenheck, author of The New Southern Style. She scatters clusters of Israeli ruscus (shown here) around the house — the hearty stems can last up to two months with water changes. But any traditional bouquet filler, such as eucalyptus or ferns, can do the trick. Group several bunches together in a large container on the dining room table or put a sprig or two in a bud vase for a welcoming touch in a powder room or a home office.

Cook ¾ cup couscous per pkg. directions. Using vegetable peeler, remove 3 strips zest from 1 orange and thinly slice. Fluff couscous, then toss with zest, 1 cup frozen peas (thawed), ⅓ cup each mint and parsley leaves, 1 Tbsp olive oil, ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp pepper.

Dunk ¾ cup each parsley and mint in boiling water 3 sec.; rinse in cold water and squeeze dry. In blender, chop 2 Tbsp walnuts and 1 small clove garlic with 3 Tbsp olive oil. Add herbs, ¼ cup each pecorino and Parmesan cheeses, 3 Tbsp olive oil and ½ tsp salt; puree until smooth.

Book of the month

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan Fans of historical fiction and complicated relationships, grab a snack and crack open Ryan’s latest novel. Two years into World War II, British pantries are feeling the rationing strain. The BBC’s Kitchen Front radio program (based on the real broadcast of the same name) helps home cooks make the most of available ingredients. When it launches a three-course cooking contest to find a female cohost among its listeners, the real drama begins. One young widow needs to win so she can keep a roof over her family’s heads. A young kitchen maid dreams of finding freedom. A trained chef with a scandalous secret wants to prove she’s good enough to be head chef, and a lady of the manor longs to impress her domineering husband. As the four very different women compete, they learn that more unites them than divides them. The book also includes recipes so you can really immerse yourself in the story’s nuances. $28, booksellers

DIY TIE-DYE

Be a Better Friend

Vibrant, personalized and a little bit Summer of Love, tie-dye is all the rage — again. Make colorful creations in your own backyard with these tips from Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Product Analyst Emma Seymour.

Deepen your relationships with this advice from Ximena Vengoechea, author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection.

LISTEN CLOSELY Many of us go into conversations with an agenda or steer the chat toward what we want to hear. Instead, ask connecting questions like “How?” and “What?” and wait for the answers.

Pick a fabric that will hold the dye well through repeated washes. Seymour recommends 100% cotton, as natural dyes are most common and are intended to work best on natural fibers. If you do want to use a synthetic garment, look for dye formulated for synthetics. GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES.

You’ll need disposable gloves to keep your hands clean; rubber bands or string to tie off segments; squirt bottles with pointed tips; and a plastic bag in which to place your dyed garment and assorted colors of dye. Cover your work surface and prepare the dye according to package instructions. RINSE THE FABRIC.

Seymour recommends first washing the clothes you intend to use to ensure that they’re totally clean. You want them damp but not sopping when dyeing, so rinse them and wring them out thoroughly before you start. FOLD TO CREATE A PATTERN.

The way you fold a garment will determine the final pattern. Try accordion folds (for stripes), a spiral twist or crumpling into

6

G H MARCH 2021

little balls throughout. Use rubber bands to secure your pattern. Remember not to fold the fabric too tightly so as to allow the dye to penetrate. APPLY THE DYE.

Seymour suggests leaving some room between colors so they won’t run together and get muddied. Apply as much or as little dye as you like; more saturation will result in brighter colors, while a lighter hand will yield a pastel effect.

SIT WITH SILENCE Especially when having a tough talk, give your partner time to process and respond, even if that means it’s uncomfortably quiet for a few moments.

LET IT DRY AND THEN RINSE.

For best results, the dye needs heat to set properly. On a nice day, place your creation in a plastic bag and lay it out in the sun to dry. At this stage, you can also apply a dye fixative to keep things bright even longer. After 24 hours, rinse it out in the tub, in the sink or with a hose outside before washing it in your machine to prevent any excess dye from staining your washer or dryer. (Seymour likes to hand-wash fresh tie-dye a few times initially just to be safe.) Visit goodhousekeeping.com/tie-dye for more tips and tricks, products we love and a video tie-dye tutorial.

GIVE AND TAKE A healthy relationship is one that’s mutually supportive. If yours feels uneven, ask your pal if you can share your struggles, or model that behavior if you’d rather not mention it outright. Offer them your support too. Getty Images.

Find a Gym or Studio You’ll Love

Back for a limited time!

Exercise is the best medicine, but if you’re a beginner, older, in a bigger body or in some other way not comfortable in most workout spaces, these tips are for you by LISA MULCAHY

1. Be honest with yourself You’ll go consistently only if it’s someplace you feel comfortable, so get real about what you need to fully participate. Would you be motivated by a Spin class for your age group only? An hour of “Body Positive Yoga” as opposed to “Power HIIT Core Booty Sculpting”? Having a private place to change? If you have a physical challenge, beyond making sure the facility has the equipment you need, ask about technology that would make it more accessible (instructors’ mics that loop into hearing aids, for example). 2. Check out the vibe “A great place to start is the gym’s website,” says Michelle Segar, Ph.D., author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness. “Does its message seem welcoming? Does the gym

8

G H MARCH 2021

emphasize only superficial goals, or does it encourage members to notice how much better they feel? Do the images show people of all shapes, sizes, colors and ages? This is a good first step toward determining if a gym is a place you want to be.” 3. Take advantage of free trials Before you join, get a sense of the clientele — are there people who look like you? Take a virtual class and “listen in on the language the employees and instructors use to make sure it’s inclusive and empowering,” says Caitlin Ball, an intuitive-eating coach and host of the podcast Quit Dieting for Good. If you’re moving away from the “calorie torching” mindset, she adds, “you want to hear them talk about what you’ll gain from your workouts, such as strength and energy, versus what you’ll lose.” A focus on weight loss “will potentially make you feel uncomfortable or unworthy at your current size,” says Ball. 4. Expect respect Racism, fatphobia, ableism and queerphobia are baked into our society, says dietitian Alissa Rumsey, author of Unapologetic Eating. If you experience discrimination, “immediately alert the gym’s management,” she says. “If you don’t like the response, escalate your complaint.” And let them know you’ll be moving on to a more inclusive place — you’re paying to feel good and take care of yourself, and you should get what you pay for.

Getty Images.

Even though almost a quarter of gym members in the U.S. are 55 or older, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, fitness centers aren’t always the most inclusive places. And feeling uncomfortable at a gym or in a class because of your age isn’t the only issue. Maybe you’re the only Black woman there, or seemingly the only disabled person or member of the LGBTQ community. How do you pick a facility where you belong (once COVID-19 precautions have been lifted, of course, and it’s safe to sweat indoors)?

The shape that stole your heart is back.

Simple Pleasures ...in the everyday

It’s time to make something special Good Housekeeping has a history of offering both inspiration and howtos for readers to make, bake, stitch and decorate in the comfort of their own homes. At one time, each issue of the magazine offered a knitting or crocheting pattern. In that spirit of “making,” we recently launched the GH Stitch Club. Together with our partners at yarnspirations.com/GHStitchClub, our editors have designed kits to fire up your creativity and help you make delightful and useful things!

You know that feeling you get walking into your home when it’s freshly cleaned? Or newly organized? For me, it’s a sense of calm and a lighter step. I’d even say a neatly straightened room brings me delight. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea of delight. A friend recently gave me a little book titled The Book of Delights, in which author Ross Gay details joyful moments that pop up in daily life. One of his stories that has stuck with me was about the “shower of love” he experienced when he took a tomato seedling through the airport and onto a plane (back in the pre-COVID world). First it spurred an eye-winking conversation with the officer at security and then it brought smiles to the faces of stressed-out travelers he passed; finally, the flight attendant literally treated the tiny plant like a passenger, asking “How’s my tomato?” each time she went up or down the aisle. This book is full of light and simple encounters and more momentous insights into Gay’s life — all “gathered” over the course of one year, beginning on his birthday. Since I was a March baby, I thought now might be a good time to start taking stock of (and truly appreciating!) some of my own delightful moments. One of my colleagues, Meaghan Murphy, has her own take on this concept: She calls it “finding the yay.” On page 115, you can read some of her clever ideas on how to intentionally spark more delight in your life, and with those you love. I’m going to take a cue from her and make time to celebrate the simple and fun things along the way. Whether you find delight from reading an uplifting story or sitting back in a just-cleaned space, this issue is packed with beautiful and inspiring ways to bring more joy, order and calm into every room of your home — and perhaps your life too! In our Storage Awards on page 51, you’ll find all the best organizing solutions, tested and selected by the GH Labs. Hopefully you will find many other little inspos to lighten your step as you move into spring!

What’s the best way to clean my makeup brushes? — Claire C.

A: Spring is a good time to get into the habit of washing your makeup brushes regularly (especially if they’ve been collecting dust lately!), as leaving them dirty can cause skin reactions, clogged pores and breakouts. “Ideally, brushes should be cleaned after every use, but that’s not usually realistic,” says GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann. “Aim for once or twice per week for powder brushes and daily if possible for liquid or cream makeup brushes, which are more prone to harboring bacteria that can cause infections.” Clean brushes with baby shampoo; a basic dish, hand or body soap like Ivory; or a makeup-brush cleanser, Wizemann recommends. Run the bristles under water, dab your brush cleanser in the palm of your hand, then swipe the brush back and forth in the soap. Rinse it again, gently press the bristles to release excess liquid and let dry on a paper towel overnight. — reporting by Marci Robin and Blake Bakkila HAVE A QUESTION for the beauty experts? “Maskne” (mask + acne) is the new term for breakouts caused by wearing a face covering, and it includes blemishes, blackheads and irritation on the cheeks, chin and nose and around the mouth. “Masks cause breakouts due to the combination of friction, heat, moisture and clogged pores,” says Howard Sobel, M.D., a dermatologist at Sobel Skin in New York City. To minimize maskne, choose a non-disposable cotton mask that is breathable and smooth (to reduce friction), washing it after each full day’s wear. Cleanse skin with a gentle face wash, then treat blemishes with a salicylic acid treatment and irritation with hydrocortisone cream. For serious breakouts or flare-ups like rosacea, see a derm.

cruelty-free

This indicates that a beauty product has been made without any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

This means a beauty product hasn’t been tested on animals, and neither have any raw materials used in making it.

G H MARCH 2021

It’s fairly easy to find cruelty-free products, thanks to third-party certifications ensuring that consumer brands’ practices do not involve animal testing. The GH Beauty Lab considers the Leaping Bunny certification the industry standard; it confirms to consumers that neither a product nor its ingredients are currently tested on animals.

What about vegan? It can be challenging to find vegan beauty products and even more so to identify brands that have committed to making all their products fully vegan. Some may claim veganism but still sell products that contain animalderived ingredients like honey. Also, many vegan brands don’t have thirdparty certification to back up their claims, so verifying those can require research. (See the GH Beauty Lab’s vetted vegan beauty brands at right.)

What’s the secret to maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

What daily habits keep you focused?

How do you balance all of your responsibilities while staying on track?

How do you incorporate Metamucil into your dayto-day?

You are never too busy to focus on your health. It’s about making good choices that are easy to incorporate into your lifestyle. I stick to a routine, but one that is convenient and flexible, so I can pivot into possibilities!

I leave my Metamucil in a place where I know I’ll see it, with a nice glass and spoon, so I never forget. Making Metamucil part of my routine enhances my quality of life. I say, “Meta makes me betta!”

The key is being in tune with your body, really taking the time to listen to its signals. If you need more water, more sleep, or more movement, your body will tell you! Honor yourself by giving your body what it needs.

I try to look at the big picture— feeling my best so I can be there for the people around me. Getting enough fiber is so important for good health. I rely on Metamucil to increase my fiber intake, drinking enough water, eating a healthy diet, and, most importantly, prayer.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH MY HAIR?

Q

S O, H OW O FT E N SHOU LD I WASH MY H A IR?

A: “Washing your hair is not a one-size-fits-all process,” says Erinn Courtney, a hairstylist and natural-hair expert in Los Angeles. “Finding the frequency that works best for you can take trial and error.” A good starting point for your hair type, from our pros:

NORMAL HAIR: If your hair isn’t oily or dry, shampoo and condition every two to three days, advises Shannon King, KMS Hair artist and owner of Hair & Co Bklyn in Brooklyn, NY. (For a great universal shampoo, try GH Beauty Lab test winner Dove Daily Moisture Shampoo, $5, drugstores.) OILY HAIR: Every day to prevent buildup, unless you have very long, coarse or curly hair, which can be drier, King says. (If so, try every other day.) DRY OR DAMAGED HAIR: It depends on the level, but King typically recommends washing every five to seven days to allow the hair and scalp’s natural conditioning oils to work through. “If your hair is dry and damaged, shampooing too often could contribute to the problem,” Courtney says. WAVY OR CURLY HAIR: It depends on the

density, but a good estimate is to shampoo every four to five days, King suggests. If that seems like too long a stretch, shorten it by a day or two and see how your hair and scalp react. COILY HAIR: Wash once per week for optimal hair growth, both Courtney and King recommend. “Don’t forget to follow with conditioner, as it’s as important as cleansing,” King adds. FINE OR THIN HAIR: “Fine hair needs to be shampooed about every other day to provide it with the moisture it needs for growth,” Courtney says. Cleansing also helps remove buildup that can weigh down thin strands. THICK HAIR: “Thicker textures tend to hold on to moisture, so washing once per week is sufficient,” Courtney says. — Reporting by Dori Price

Q Is there such a thing as natural hair dye? A: Yes (sort of). “Other than those that are based on henna [a plant-derived pigment], most commercially available hair dyes—for home or found in salons — use chemical actives to work,” says GH Beauty Lab Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. So if you see hair dye that isn’t henna yet claims to be organic or natural, it’s “most likely still employing synthetic ingredients for it to be effective,” she says. But haircolor doesn’t have to be “organic” or “natural” to be safe — one of the GH Beauty Lab’s go-tos is Clairol Natural Instincts Demi-Permanent Ammonia-Free Hair Color ($7, drugstores). If you prefer a formula free of potentially irritating or damaging actives like ammonia, peroxide and PPD (paraphenylenediamine, a chemical coloring agent), try the GH Beauty Award winner below, made with 82% to 100% plant-based ingredients. —

NATURAL ALL OVER COLOR, FROM $75, BIOLAGE.COM/SALON-FINDER

A: The general rule for haircuts, haircolor and styling such as a blowout or updo: “If you’re getting a service in a salon, plan to add at least a 20% tip,” says Clara Leonard, a hairstylist in New York City. To be safe, Leonard adds, “you can always ask the front desk what their standard is.” (The same percentage goes for in-home hair services.) But the stylist isn’t the only person who should get a gratuity; if there’s a salon assistant who works with the stylist or washes your hair, consider leaving them $5 or more separately. You may want to tip extra for exceptional service or if your pro went out of their way to accommodate you (e.g., spent extra time, worked a holiday, saw you even though you were very late, etc.), and less if you dislike the results and there’s no offer to fix it. — Reporting by Sam Escobar

A: For your hair to be its healthiest, strongest and longest (if that’s your aim), it’s important to get it cut regularly. “Hair is keratinized protein,” says Philip B., a haircare specialist in Los Angeles. “Any natural byproduct of the body wears out in time, and cutting helps keep the structure intact.” His general guidelines, based on your hair type and goals: SHORT HAIR: every 2 to 4 A: If you’re thinking of getting bangs (or changing up the ones you have), know that all fringe isn’t created equal — and some styles flatter certain face shapes more than others. For a square or heart-shaped face, ask your hairstylist to cut wispy, feathered bangs, which add softness to sharper features (they also look

great on textured wavy or curly hair). The silhouette of an oblong face is balanced well by blunt bangs snipped straight across the forehead with no layers. A round face gets more dimension from sideswept or curtain bangs, which are longer and parted down the middle. And an oval-shaped face goes

well with just about any bangs. If you can’t figure out your face shape (some faces are a mix!), ask your stylist for guidance or go with versatile layered bangs: They have varying lengths that blend into your hair and can be worn straight down, parted in the middle or to the side. — Reporting by Katie Berohn

1 Cleanser Face cleansing is the

“treat” category too. If desired, lightly tap on a for-

first step in any skincare routine, as it clears away impurities and excess oil that can clog pores and dull skin. But be gentle. “Too many people cleanse too much or too often or with a cleanser that’s too harsh, which will actually break down your skin’s protective barrier,” says Ashley Magovern, M.D., a dermatologist in Manhattan Beach, CA. If you have dry or sensitive skin, try washing only at night and rinsing your face with water in the morning. can both treat and protect. Look for an antioxidant, like gold-standard vitamin C. “Everyone should use vitamin C, no matter what age,” Dr. Magovern says. “It helps reverse a lot of the skin damage we get from the sun and pollution.” For darker skin tones, hyperpigmentation can be a common issue, and using a vitamin C serum in the a.m. can help mitigate dark spots, says Jennifer David, D.O., a dermatologist in Philadelphia and founder of Skin & Scripts Virtual Dermatology. Toner (maybe)

You don’t need a toner, but swiping one on can be a great way to refresh skin, remove any residual debris and balance pH, Dr. Magovern says. If you have acne-prone skin, look for a toner with ingredients like salicylic acid to combat breakouts. For dry or sensitive skin, seek out a hydrating toner (or its sister, an essence) made without parching alcohol and with ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to soothe.

which keeps skin hydrated and helps strengthen its barrier. Unless you have dry skin, opt for a lighter moisturizer for daytime use, such as a lotion or gel that will soak in quickly and won’t pill under makeup. If your skin is drier, try a thicker formula, like a cream. “Look for ceramides or hyaluronic acid, since these ingredients are the building blocks of moisture retention in skin,” says Dr. David.

Sunscreen

It’s the most important step in any skincare routine, for every skin type and age (and yes, even when you’re indoors!). “If you don’t wear sunscreen, you might as well not do any of the other steps,” Dr. Magovern says. “The sun is the number one reason people’s skin ages prematurely.” And the damage isn’t only cosmetic, no matter what your skin color: “People of color can and do get skin cancer,” Dr. David says. “Plus, if you’re treating hyperpigmentation without daily SPF use, it’s like taking two steps forward and one step backward.” Smooth on a broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as the last step in your morning skincare routine, including on your neck and the backs of your hands. 3 1 Cleanser (again) Start by applying a separate makeup remover if needed to take off any cosmetics. “Cleansers are not necessarily designed to dissolve makeup, especially on eyes, and haven’t done so effectively in our testing,” says GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann. Follow with the same cleanser as in the a.m., working from the inside of the face up, then out and down along the hairline and perimeter to just underneath the chin, she suggests.

Serum or treatment

Night is a great time to use products with ingredients that work to slough off dead skin cells or stimulate cell turnover while you sleep, such as alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid or retinol, Dr. Magovern says. These smooth texture, brighten and minimize pores. (Some serums, like No7 on the previous page, can be used day or night.) If you’re treating hyperpigmentation, alternate between a retinoid and the spotfading active ingredient hydroquinone, Dr. David recommends. GH BEAUTY LAB PICK: GH SEAL STAR ROC

5 Acne treatment If you currently have a blemish (or a few), apply acne treatments at this time. For chronic breakouts, be proactive rather than treating pimples as they pop up, says Dr. Magovern. “If you just treat the spot, you’ll get acne right next to it if your skin is clogged,” she says. “You’re getting breakouts because oil is building up, so be consistent with your regimen to keep pores all over your face clear.” (If using a retinoid, let

If your skin is still feeling parched, face oil can be a great way to help lock in moisture overnight. “A lot of people think that if they have acne or oily skin, they’ll break out with an oil, but it’s not true,” Dr. Magovern explains. “It can actually really help soften skin.” For a nourishing boost, pat on a face oil as a last step once the rest of your leave-on skincare products dry. For certain adults with newly diagnosed metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that tests positive for PD-L1

= A CHANCE FOR MORE SNUGGLY SUNDAYS

A Chance to Live Longer™ THE 1ST AND ONLY FDA-APPROVED CHEMO-FREE COMBINATION OF 2 IMMUNOTHERAPIES THAT WORKS DIFFERENTLY In a study of newly diagnosed advanced NSCLC patients, half of those on OPDIVO + YERVOY were alive at 17.1 months versus 14.9 months on platinum-based chemotherapy. Results may vary. OPDIVO® + YERVOY® is not approved for patients younger than 18 years of age.

Indication & Important Safety Information for OPDIVO (nivolumab) + YERVOY (ipilimumab) Only your healthcare professional knows the specifics of your condition and how OPDIVO in combination with YERVOY may fit into your overall therapy. The information below does not take the place of talking with your healthcare professional, so talk to them if you have any questions. What are OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are prescription medicines used to treat people with a type of advanced stage lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). OPDIVO may be used in combination with YERVOY as your first treatment for NSCLC when your lung cancer has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic) and your tumors are positive for PD-L1, but do not have an abnormal EGFR or ALK gene. It is not known if OPDIVO and YERVOY are safe and effective when used in children younger than 18 years of age. What is the most important information I should know about OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are medicines that may treat certain cancers by working with your immune system. OPDIVO and YERVOY can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can affect the way they work. These problems can sometimes become serious or life-threatening and can lead to death and may happen anytime during treatment or even after your treatment has ended. You may have more than one of these problems at the same time. Some of these problems may happen more often when OPDIVO is used in combination with YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away if you develop any new or worse signs or symptoms, including • Lung problems: new or worsening cough; shortness of breath; chest pain • Intestinal problems: diarrhea (loose stools) or more frequent bowel movements than usual; stools that are black, tarry, sticky, or have blood or mucus; severe stomach-area (abdominal) pain or tenderness • Liver problems: yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes; severe nausea or vomiting; pain on the right side of your stomach area (abdomen); dark urine (tea colored); bleeding or bruising more easily than normal

• Hormone gland problems: headaches that will not go away or unusual headaches; eye sensitivity to light; eye problems; rapid heartbeat; increased sweating; extreme tiredness; weight gain or weight loss; feeling more hungry or thirsty than usual; urinating more often than usual; hair loss; feeling cold; constipation; your voice gets deeper; dizziness or fainting; changes in mood or behavior, such as decreased sex drive, irritability, or forgetfulness • Kidney problems: decrease in the amount of urine; blood in your urine; swelling in your ankles; loss of appetite • Skin problems: rash; itching; skin blistering or peeling; painful sores or ulcers in mouth or nose, throat, or genital area • Eye problems: blurry vision, double vision, or other vision problems; eye pain or redness Problems can also happen in other organs and tissues. These are not all of the signs and symptoms of immune system problems that can happen with OPDIVO and YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away for any new or worsening signs or symptoms, which may include: • Chest pain; irregular heartbeat; shortness of breath; swelling of ankles • Confusion; sleepiness; memory problems; changes in mood or behavior; stiff neck; balance problems; tingling or numbness of the arms or legs • Double vision; blurry vision; sensitivity to light; eye pain; changes in eye sight • Persistent or severe muscle pain or weakness; muscle cramps • Low red blood cells; bruising Getting medical help right away may help keep these problems from becoming more serious. Your healthcare team will check you for these problems during treatment and may treat you with corticosteroid or hormone replacement medicines. Your healthcare team may also need to delay or completely stop your treatment if you have severe side effects. What should I tell my healthcare provider before receiving OPDIVO and YERVOY? Before you receive OPDIVO and YERVOY, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have immune system problems such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or lupus • have received an organ transplant

Embrace original details. Duprie’s residence is protected by the Mills Act, a city program that promotes preservation of historic details. Instead of knocking down walls or replacing the kitchen’s mosaic floor tiles, “we opted to update everything we could without wielding a hammer,” says interior designer Martha Mulholland. “We softened the graphic black-and-white tile floor with a vintage rug, which informed the palette of the Farrow & Ball paint colors we picked for the cabinets and walls.”

When it came time to renovate the kitchen in her 100-year-old Arts and Crafts residence in Los Angeles, Jacey Duprie, the creative force behind the lifestyle blog Damsel in Dior, invited her more than 520,000 Instagram followers to weigh in on the design process. She also leaned on designer Martha Mulholland, who guided the old-meets-new aesthetic. Vintage accessories and antique light fixtures, along with new hardware and plumbing, transformed the space. “I grew up on a farm in South Texas, so I wanted my kitchen to feel warm and family friendly,” says Duprie, who shares a 2-year-old daughter with her real estate developer husband, Grant Leavitt.

Add warmth with accessories. Duprie replaced the kitchen’s decorative lighting with antique fixtures that adhere to the home’s Arts and Crafts style and used other quick switches to inject more personality. “We swapped out the hardware and plumbing fixtures and added accessories with warmth and character, including vintage studio pottery, hard turned wood cutting boards, nubby linen kitchen towels and French crockery,” says Mulholland.

Have fun with the mixed metals trend. To create a polished space, Mulholland installed hardware and light fixtures in a range of different metals—a nod to Duprie’s trendy fashion sense. “I like to push boundaries a little bit more with my home than I do with my personal style,” Duprie says. Any tips to tidy my bathroom quickly? I have barely any time to spare! — JENNIFER P. A: Here are some easy

Q How do I know which cleaners also disinfect? Is there a right and a wrong way to use them?

— SANDRA M.

A: First and foremost, check the label to make sure the product is

registered as a disinfectant and to see what strains of bacteria and viruses it kills. EPA registration is required by law for any cleaner that claims to kill germs. The EPA registration number can usually be found on the bottom of the front or back label, and the bacteria and viruses against which the product is effective are also usually listed. I think the most common mistake people make when using any kind of disinfectant is not allowing the product to sit on a surface long enough before wiping it away. Always consult the label for the length of time hard, nonporous surfaces must stay wet for the product to kill germs —this can range from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. And remember, because liquids evaporate, you may need to apply the product multiple times.

things you can do if you don’t have time for a deep clean. In 10 seconds: Wipe away toothpaste globs with a tissue so they won’t harden. In 20 seconds: Go over the mirror and faucet with a damp microfiber cloth to remove streaks and water spots. In 30 seconds: Put out fresh towels—especially hand towels. Clean towels give the entire bathroom a lift. In one minute: Run a damp paper towel over your floor tiles to pick up hair and dust. Make sure to hit the corners. In five minutes: Wipe the toilet tank and seat with a disinfecting wipe. Apply toilet cleaner inside the bowl and under the rim and scrub with a toilet brush. Flush, then clean under the seat and the base of the bowl with another disinfecting wipe. Finish by cleaning the handle.

CLEANING GUIDE

Q

GH

INSTITUTE

The vanity in my bathroom always looks cluttered. What’s the secret to keeping it more organized? — KELLY H. A: Your bathroom is probably

one of the most frequently used spaces in your home, so it’s no surprise that it can be a challenge to keep things in order. Here are some tools and tricks that have worked for me!

Use clear stackable bins. Lidded canisters in see-through acrylic herd together all those small, oddly shaped toiletries.

Put up some shelves. A pretty powder-coated iron shelf turns dead wall space into a strong storage spot.

If you don’t have drawers under the sink, add some! Smooth-gliding steel mesh drawers restore order and accessibility. Label each so you’ll know where everything lives and should be returned to.

Get a door caddy. Make better use of the back of the door by using an over-the-door organizing solution with slots for storage.

Q

I feel as if the second I clean my bathroom, it’s dirty again! Any tips to make my hard work last longer? — ANGELA D.

A: I hear you! It brings me such a sense of accomplishment any time I finish cleaning a space.

Luckily I’ve learned a few tricks over the years that can help make that tidy bathroom —and that good feeling—last a little longer. Start with this rule: The last person to shower each day should use a squeegee to wipe excess water from the shower walls, the tub and the shower door. Designate a spot for the squeegee (I hang it from the showerhead) and always return it there when done. Then, if you have a shower curtain, stretch it out. All this will help residual water dry faster and delay the formation of mildew stains. Next, if you keep bar soap at the sink, try switching to liquid soap with a pump: Eliminating the grimy soap dish will help your counter and sink stay goop-free. Finally, stash a pack of disinfecting wipes and a few dry cloths under the sink. Use the premoistened sheets to quickly clean chrome fixtures and the toilet seat, top and handle. (But don’t use them on a mirror —glass cleaner is best for that.) You can use the cloth to wipe up water drips on the sink, counter and faucet, putting it back in the vanity cabinet when it’s dry. If you do these quick touch-ups when you see the need, the entire bathroom will look cleaner longer!

Q

I’ve recently returned to the office, and there’s a new sign posted in the restroom that says Please close lid before flushing. What’s that about? — CATHY L.

60

G H MARCH 2021

A: If the sign wasn’t there before, I’m sure this is part of your workplace’s COVID-19 safety

protocols for preventing the spread of disease. If you leave the lid up when you flush the toilet, you almost certainly risk having germy water particles spray across the room and settle on surfaces. Closing the lid is definitely a good thing to do at home too! Explain why to everyone in your household and make sure all are on board with the lid-down policy.

Consumer testers raved about the sleek fabric, calling it “soft, smooth, slightly crisp and thick.” It also had perfect scores in the fabric strength and pilling resistance tests. There was even less shrinkage than with other lyocell sheets, though these call for cold water on the gentle cycle, which may not clean as thoroughly.

These sheets performed well across the board in durability tests, with only slight shrinkage and minimal pilling. Most testers highlighted their softness, with one saying “I feel like I would get a good night’s sleep on it,” but some noticed that their fabric seemed somewhat “thin and flimsy” compared with others.

This tester favorite was described as a “great combination of softness and heft,” though one tester said the fabric seemed “slippery.” These also were smoother in appearance than other cotton sheets—known to wrinkle easily—and showed no pilling even after being rubbed by our abrasion machine 1,000 times.

With impressive durability in our tests, these held up to the Lab’s strenuous evaluations for strength, shrinkage and pilling. And while percale can sometimes feel rough and look wrinkled, these were softer and less creased than others. “I would love these sheets in my home,” one tester told us.

Cotton and linen are luxurious and feel natural, but blends and synthetics tend to be soft, durable and affordable.

The main weaves are percale (crisp) and sateen (smooth). Flannel fabric feels cozy, and jersey sheets have stretch.

Some brands don’t even list this spec because it is only relevant for cotton and isn’t a clear indicator of quality.

I’ve heard you should replace bras every six months. Is that true? — JOCELYN S.

A: Nope. Bras don’t have expiration dates, and you shouldn’t

toss any garment just because you’ve had it for a certain amount of time. Replace a bra when it loses its stretch, stops fitting well or doesn’t feel supportive. But the more you wear and wash bras, the faster you’ll break down their elasticity—essential for support. Your best bet: Rotate several bras, washing them after every three to four wearings. Also, check in a mirror twice a year to be sure your bras still fit. There shouldn’t be gapping or spillage in the cups, and the band shouldn’t sit too high or low on your back.

seeing “vegan leather” everywhere. What Q I’m exactly is it made of, and how does it compare? A: Vegan leather (also known as faux or synthetic leather) has certainly hit the mainstream in categories like clothing, outerwear, handbags and even furniture. And though the word “vegan” may make you think “plant-based,” varieties using natural materials like apple peels or pineapple leaves are very rare. In fact, leather alternatives are typically made using polyurethane (PU), a coating that is put on fabric to give it a leather-like shine. Still, manufactured faux leather can look surprisingly luxe (not like plastic), and beyond being animal-free, it’s less expensive and easier to clean than real leather.

The easiest way to upgrade your bed is by layering on a mattress topper, which is thick enough to add more support or softness. Don’t forget that these are different from mattress protectors or pads, which are thinner and help keep your mattress clean. Here’s how to find the best topper for your needs (prices listed are for queen size): If your bed is hard: Select down or fiberfill to add plush comfort. We love the fluffy Parachute Down Topper, $359. If your bed is soft: Opt for firm foam to boost support, like Tempur-Pedic’s TempurTopper Supreme, $399. If you sweat at night: Try a cooling layer, like the Polar Nights Mattress Topper from Therapedic, $299. If you have back pain at night: Get pressure relief from Saatva’s Graphite Mattress Topper, $275.

SUPER STATIC BUSTER

FAB FABRIC SOFTENER

INSTANT ODOR EATER

Few things are more annoying than static that causes clothes to stick together. Enter Bounce WrinkleGuard Mega dryer sheets, which impart a fresh scent and help eliminate that dreaded cling. Plus, their extra-large size makes them perfect for use in today’s large-capacity machines.

Ultra Downy fights the damage washing can cause with conditioning ingredients that help keep fabrics from fading, fuzzing or stretching. Use it during the rinse cycle, in which it penetrates fibers and leaves them more flexible than washing in detergent alone. The gentle formula is dye- and perfume-free, so even those with sensitive skin can use it without fear of irritation or itching.

Extend the life of most pieces in your wardrobe—from wool blazers and sweaters to denim and gym gear—by occasionally skipping the washing machine (or dry cleaner). Instead, spritz on Febreze Clothing Odor Eliminator, which helps get rid of smells from cooking, sweat, pets and even smoke. Depending on the formula you choose, Febreze can be used on clothing, bedding and sofa cushions and as an air freshener.

LAB RESULTS Tests in our Cleaning Lab show that when laundry is dried with one of these supersize sheets, fabrics come out softer and with fewer wrinkles than when traditional sheets are used. And that means less ironing! Our cleaning experts also noted that the fragrance was subtle, not overpowering, and that it lasted beyond the dryer and into drawers or the linen closet. LAB RESULTS Nothing tops the fabric-softening power of Ultra Downy in GH Cleaning Lab evaluations. And a little goes a long way: For medium loads, less than a capful is all you need. At-home consumer testers were impressed too, giving the formula top marks for its distinct refreshing scent. ULTRA DOWNY FREE & GENTLE LIQUID FABRIC CONDITIONER, $4.50 FOR 51 OZ, WALMART.COM

LAB RESULTS Pros in the Cleaning Lab love Febreze because the technology is proven to wipe out unpleasant odors, not just cover them up. The fabric care line dries quickly and won’t leave residue or spots on most items. Our analysts recommend avoiding it on materials like leather, suede and silk. Our results showed that there’s no beating the cleaning power of GH Seal star Tide. If you like powder, Tide Plus Bleach Powder was our best overall pick. For liquid lovers, Tide Plus Bleach Alternative topped our test. For single-dose convenience, Tide Pods 3-in-1 HE Laundry Detergent Pacs beat out the competition. Becoming a Beauty Shop Boss Hilaria Kwakumey, 38 Owner of Boss Hair Salon

Hilaria spent the first weeks of the unfolding COVID-19 restrictions scrambling for a flight home to Maryland from Ghana, where she was visiting family. Adding to the stress was unfortunate news from the restaurant company where she’d worked for four years in talent acquisitions: She was being furloughed without pay. Panic hit hard. Hilaria loved her job; she was known as “the miracle worker” because she was so good at hiring the right people. Before the pandemic, she’d been daydreaming about starting her own recruiting business, but she knew few people needed that kind of help right now. So she pivoted — hard. Hilaria asked herself, What have you always wanted to do? The answer was to be her own boss — but how? She kept returning to the idea of opening a hair salon. After returning to a U.S. high school from her boarding school in Ghana, she had made extra cash doing people’s hair, and the love of that work remained. “It’s really scary,” Hilaria says, “but what better time than now to do what I’ve always wanted to do?” After months of research, effort and leaps of

faith, Hilaria opened Boss Hair Salon (“because I always say everyone should feel like a boss after doing their hair”) in Frederick, MD, last November. BA BY STEPS In a minority leadership program, Hilaria learned about the nonprofit SCORE, which connected her with a mentor. That mentor, in weekly Zoom meetings, walked her through the process of starting a business. She also approached every salon owner she knew, including her own stylist, for advice. “I was really nervous because I felt like she would feel I was in competition with her,” Hilaria remembers. “Then one day I thought, The worst she could say is no, and I gave her a buzz.” To Hilaria’s shock, the woman immediately agreed to meet. POSSE POINTERS After a childhood in both the United States and Ghana, Hilaria believes that “the only way you get through life is with people.” To decide where to build Boss Hair Salon, she invited friends to check out potential spaces. “It was really helpful, because I got a lot of great opinions,” she says.

When all her pals praised one spot, she felt more confident signing a lease. SECRET SUPERPOWER Hilaria prides herself on hiring the right people to staff the salon. Her trick: “I look for character and personality. We can teach you a skill set, but I can’t teach you a character trait.” To make sure potential employees are friendly — the vibe she wants Boss Hair Salon to embody — she invites friends to hang out during the entire hiring process. Candidates who don’t make the friends feel welcome get a no. DA ILY PER SPECTI V E SHIFT Hilaria is known for moving fast. When she announced that she wanted to enroll in cosmetology school, her cousin wailed, “Can you slow down?” But since she has lost close friends to COVID-19, she’s been learning to “just sit and take in the right-now vs. looking for my next step.” Hilaria even set her Alexa to remind her to pray every morning at 8 a.m., as saying “Thank you, God, for waking me up today” helps her keep her challenges in perspective.

Growing a Plant Company From the Ground Up Sarah Farrar, 25 Founder of Fungi and Flora

“Do you want my houseplants when I move?” Sarah Farrar’s therapist asked. “Sure,” Sarah replied. Twenty of them were soon dangling their leaves around Sarah’s Provo, UT, townhouse, an inside addition to the tiny garden she’d planted before and during the early days of the pandemic. Growing things gave Sarah, who had been laid off from her customer support job in March and had another job offer fall through, a sense of accomplishment in an otherwise Groundhog Day–like loop of sameness. “You see the plant roots growing and you’re like, OK, things are still moving forward,” she says. When plant propagation took over Sarah’s kitchen table, her bedroom dresser and her 2-year-old son’s bedroom, she decided to turn her passion into a side hustle. She and her husband, Kraig, began selling her plants at the local farmers’ market, along with 75 pounds of worms for composting that they’d brought back from a visit to Kraig’s parents in Oregon (those lived for a while in a bin in the dining room). Their business, Fungi and Flora, was such a success that the Farrars started scouting locations for a brick-and-mortar nursery space and event center. COMMU N IT Y-BU ILDING On her first day at the market, Sarah was stationed near another seller with — wait for it — a houseplant booth. Instead of being territorial, the two women shared sourcing and tips on plant care and display. Explains Sarah, “Even if you’re a competing business, it’s like, ‘How can we help you be successful?’ ” Now that competitor is a friend — and paints clay pots for Fungi and Flora.

PL A N T PEEPS To beef up her knowhow, Sarah joined a few Facebook communities for houseplant parents. When a plant dies, other members will reassure her: “Oh, I’ve killed so many plants!” Her in-person customers have been just as warm, proudly showing off photos of expanding roots and new leaves. “The houseplant community is fantastic,” Sarah says. SA LES SAV IOR S While houseplants have been particularly popular during the pandemic — in one survey, more than half of plant buyers said they hoped to distract themselves from world events — Sarah diversified Fungi and Flora’s offerings with compost, mushrooms, homemade vanilla and crafts. She’s taken a similarly varied approach to sales, stocking houseplants and vanilla at a local bakery and using Instagram to boost traffic to the business’s e-commerce site, fungiandflora.org. She even asked her mother-in-law, a florist, to teach flower-arranging classes on Zoom. THE BEST FEELING In a time when Sarah, a raging extrovert, can’t reach out to people the way she used to, running this kind of small business feels like a way to connect. “If I do a succulent arrangement and send that out to someone, it’s a feeling like, I’m sharing a bit of myself with you,” she says.

Giving People a Lift in More Ways Than One Janice Hodges, 60 Entrepreneur, H&D Transportation

“I always knew there was a purpose for everyone’s life,” Janice says, “but I would ask God, and then I would be too busy to get the answer.” She’d been working for General Motors for 41 years, but when the factory where she was an auditor closed for eight weeks during the pandemic, all she had was quiet and time to figure out what she wanted to do next. A memory surfaced of childhood afternoons spent in the back of the family car with her sister as her mother visited elderly friends and relatives and ferried them to church or the store. That, she realized, was what she wanted to do: help people who needed a way to get somewhere. The public transportation in Fort Wayne, IN, where Janice lived, wasn’t reliable. Five years earlier, she had started driving her 5-year-old grandson to day care before and after school once the public school system dropped its bus service. At the time, she’d thought someone should offer private transportation. Now she knew that she should be the person who did — and that 2020 had given her the opportunity to act. Last summer, Janice and her husband, Neal Davis, bought a 15-passenger van and a handicapped-accessible bus, and by December she had launched H&D Transportation, named using the initials of her and her husband’s last names. continued on page 72

LEARNING CURVE “I had the idea, and I had already started purchasing the vehicles, but I had no idea what it takes to be in business,” Janice remembers. Signing up for a SEED program sponsored by the Build Institute of Fort Wayne, a nine-week course for would-be entrepreneurs (over Zoom, because of COVID-19), helped her figure out how to structure her business, find insurance and get certified to become a transportation contractor for the state. By the time she graduated, she’d already done most of the work to create her business. SER EN DIPITOUS MOMEN T For weeks, Janice talked up her new project to her daughter in Atlanta. Then her daughter called with news: Atlanta’s bus system was retiring some vehicles. Did Janice want to reserve one? One road trip later, Janice had bought a 2014 wheelchair-accessible minibus for $7,000 — a steal, paid for in cash from Janice’s bank account. Bonus: Her daughter, inspired by her idea, bought her own bus and started a similar transportation business in Atlanta. HER “ W H Y ” When the wait for a final piece of insurance delayed her launch by several weeks, Janice almost gave in to discouragement. Remembering why she’d started the business — to serve people on the margins — gave her the push to carry on. “I keep going back to my purpose,” she says. “I feel good every time I help somebody.”

Recording Stories of Hope, One State at a Time Michelle Fishburne, 58 Founder of storytelling project Who We Are Now

Even before COVID-19, the year 2020 was a disaster for Michelle Fishburne. In January, an unidentified virus left her partially deaf and clinging to walls for balance. Two weeks later, she was downsized from the foundation where she had worked as the public relations director. With Michelle having no job and with the lease on her Chapel Hill, NC, house set to expire, her 18-year-old daughter was worried about where her mom would end up. Michelle was too. In August, she found herself desolate on the beach, convinced that the best years of her life were over. Michelle’s emergency backup plan was to move into her 2006 Fleetwood Jamboree motor home. Then thoughts of the cross-country road trip she’d taken in it years earlier sparked a new idea — to drive around the country and talk to people about life during a pandemic. Michelle packed the contents of her house into five storage units, and last September she loaded up her shih tzu, Buddy, and set off. Since then, she has interviewed more than 150 people in 28 states plus the District of Columbia, from a gun store owner in Shamrock, TX, to a stuntdog trainer in Pine Bluffs, WY. She posts their stories and photos at whowearenow.us.

W H AT SHE LET GO Michelle haunts Facebook groups and local newspapers to track down interesting people to talk to in small towns like Corinth, MS, and Raton, NM. During the two days she spends at each destination, her interviews tend to multiply as one person points her toward another. That has been a challenge for the type A planner in her, but she’s trying to lean into uncertainty. “I’m confident that the next step will become obvious when it becomes obvious,” she says. A H A MOMEN T Michelle’s pivot wasn’t intentional, but an interview with Romy Toussaint, a yoga instructor in New Jersey, helped her find a fresh take on her situation. “In times of scarcity,” Romy told her, “look at what’s abundant, because whenever there’s scarcity, there’s also an abundance.” In Michelle’s scarcity column were “no job” and “no home.” But once she examined the abundance side, it had a surprisingly deep bench, including her motor home, her curiosity, her experience, her love of storytelling and the gift of time — all of which have translated into Who We Are Now. “If you can figure out the things you have in abundance, including your skill sets and your prior experience, you can whip up a beautiful result,” Michelle says. DOSE OF HOPE Endlessly scrolling on Twitter, Facebook and news sites had made the U.S. look unrecognizable and a little scary to Michelle. But once she started chatting with people about how connected they felt to their communities, she saw a much better, more hopeful version of America. “I see the faith people convey that if we lean on each other, we will all get through this,” she says. That feeling of eventual renewal has transformed her. “If I had told myself, when I was sitting by the ocean that day in August, You’re going to be even happier than you’ve ever been, I would have thought it was wishful thinking. But that’s what’s happened.”

Cry

in Front of My

Kids? The past year has been incredibly emotional. Here’s what experts told me about why there’s value in letting the tears fall.

It was mid-March, and my two young kids were screaming for a dinner that was far from ready. Before I could take a deep breath, tag my husband for a break or escape to the bathroom, I felt my chest tighten, my cheeks flush and the tears begin to flow. Being confined to an 800-square-foot apartment had frayed everyone’s nerves, and though I don’t normally cry in front of my kids, this time the emotion got the better of me.

74

G H MARCH 2021

Later, once the kids were in bed and I had time to reflect on the stressful day, I wondered, Was it bad to cry in front of my kids? Was my open display of emotion damaging to them? Thankfully, the answer to those questions is no, says Beth Proudfoot, LMFT, a parent educator in San Jose, CA, who has more than 35 years’ experience counseling children and families. “It’s true that parents should provide the support structure for their children,” she says. “But adults have emotions too. There’s no need to hide them.”

by MIRIAM FOLEY

Plus, 2020 qualifies for many as one of the most emotionally difficult years in recent memory. In this COVID-19 era, caregivers, especially moms, have been pulled in all directions — working from home, caring for children, managing online learning systems and continuing day-to-day chores on top of cooking. Some also have endured bigger hardships such as the loss of a loved one, poor health or financial worries. Of course, there are other reasons to cry that aren’t related to sadness or frustration. A few months ago, I pictured my second child as a newborn, and… waterworks! And is it just me or does watching Hallmark movies require far more tissues than it used to? Brad Repke, a senior wealth adviser in Michigan, hasn’t always cried openly in front of his children. In fact, he used to suppress and ignore his emotions. But therapy and the experience of fatherhood allowed him to tap into a deeper, more sensitive part of himself. Now discussing emotional topics is just as important as playing games and fishing with his kids and discussing manners, respect and hard work. He tells them, “If you need to shed some tears, that’s OK.” And Brad encourages his son in particular to express his feelings in a way Brad himself hasn’t always felt comfortable doing. “I want him to understand that crying is perfectly fine and can actually make you feel better,” Brad says. He’s right: Crying is helpful. It releases oxytocin and endorphins, feel-good chemicals that can help ease both physical and emotional pain. The experts to whom I spoke stressed that the more kids see adults in their lives crying and bouncing back, the less stigmatized tears become. Here are a few more guidelines I learned.

Getty Images.

Tell Kids It’s Not Their Fault. Children, especially younger ones, are essentially egocentric. They will think that they’ve made you sad if they see you cry — unless you explain the real cause. Proudfoot recommends statements like “I’m crying now because I am sad that Fluffy died. But I’m going to be fine, and I’ll call my

The goal as parents should be to model for kids the appropriate expression of emotion.”

friend later to talk about it.” Isabel Bascón, who works with young kids at a nursery school in Madrid, has similar advice. “Keep it simple with a statement kids can easily understand,” she says. “Like ‘I miss my friend’ or ‘It didn’t turn out the way I wanted.’ ”

Explain Your Feelings. Let your kids know you’re crying because you’re sad, happy, angry, frustrated or touched. The sooner they’re able to identify the nuances of their own emotions, the better. “The goal as parents should be to model for kids the appropriate expression of emotion,” says Proudfoot. That means not hiding your tears, but also not subjecting kids to extreme anger or sadness.

Find Comfort Elsewhere. It’s all right if your kids give you a hug when you’re crying — it shows that they’re empathetic. But “some parents

get into trouble by always expecting their children to comfort them,” Proudfoot says. Rather than demonstrating the natural inclination to comfort a loved one in a moment of emotion, a child may begin to bear the burden of making the parent feel better. “This kind of role reversal isn’t OK,” she says. “Parents comfort children, not the other way around.”

Smile Through Your Tears. If they do offer comfort, thank your child with a big grin and let them know that you are OK and have other adults around to support you. Last week, after a stressful day, I felt that familiar sensation in my chest and cheeks. The tears came, and this time, instead of fighting the feeling, I greeted it with humor. “I know, here come the waterworks again!” I told my kids. “No worries — turning off the faucet now!”

Sheryl Sandberg and her fiancé, Tom Bernthal, share time on the beach in 2020.

Falling in Love AFTER LOSING THE

Love of Your Life Five years ago, social media executive Sheryl Sandberg was heartbroken by the sudden death of her husband. In an intimate letter to her new fiancé, she shares how he helped her rediscover love and romance.

W

hen Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg lost her husband,

Dave Goldberg, in 2015, her world fell apart. Her friends and family tried to reassure her that she’d one day find love again — but all she felt was grief and guilt. And when she did put herself out there, she was often publicly judged for it. “Dave’s mother said to me really early on, ‘You’re going to get married again, and I’m going to dance at your wedding,’ ” Sheryl recalls. “This was such a gift… because I think you need permission. Someone needs to say, ‘It is OK; it is not your fault.’ ”

76

G H MARCH 2021

It took Sheryl a long time to actually believe love was possible again, a journey she detailed in her best-selling 2017 book, Option B. But everything changed when Dave’s brother, Rob Goldberg, introduced her to a close friend of his, marketing CEO Tom Bernthal. Tom had been through a divorce, which Sheryl came to learn hurt him deeply. But day by day, the two found strength and solace in each other and fell in love. Now, just over a year after Sheryl and Tom got engaged, the first female Facebook board member pens an open love letter to her fiancé to thank him for giving her the one thing she needed most after enduring such a traumatic loss: hope.

as told to KAYLA KEEGAN

Letters From the Heart Our series Love Letters features messages of gratitude from your favorite personalities to those who have made a positive impact on their lives.

ear om, A year has passed since we got engaged — one of the most transformative and fastest-flying years of my life. I look at where we are today and how the seven of us have come together as a family during an incredibly difficult time for our country and world, and I can’t quite believe we did it. Not too long ago, you and I were pushed to our breaking points. We were both dealing with life events that turned our worlds upside down — you were getting divorced, and I was grieving the loss of Dave. I really wasn’t sure I could ever devote my heart to another person like that. When Dave died, I could barely imagine dating again, much less getting married. I distinctly remember tucking the kids into bed and sitting by myself at the kitchen table where Dave and I once played countless games of Scrabble together. I’d picture myself at that table, alone, for the rest of my life. It was a sad and frankly scary thought, but I knew it could end up being my fate. And if it were, I’d count my many blessings and savor all the joy life sent my way — but I’d always be at least a little bit brokenhearted about continuing this journey alone. Dave’s brother, Rob, had a different idea for me. He just knew I had to meet you, his “good friend Tom.” When I shook your hand for the first time, I had no clue that you would be the one to change my life.

Sheryl and Tom share a love of the outdoors.

On our first real date, we took a hike. You insisted on holding my water bottle the entire time. It was a small thing, but it really struck me. Whenever I retell this part of the story, you laugh and say, “What a low bar. I’m so glad I jumped over.” But the truth is, I don’t think anyone had ever held my water bottle before for an entire hike. It felt like a metaphor: I didn’t need someone to pull me up the mountain, just someone to make the uphill trek a bit easier. I’d soon come to discover in much bigger ways your remarkable generosity and warmth as a partner and parent. Apart from how funny, calming and insightful you are, I love how involved you are in our kids’ lives. You’re excited to pick your son and daughters up from school. You’re great at making parenting compromises (my son and daughter have you to thank for the less-strict bedtimes!). You’re ready to play Settlers of Catan for hours with the kids because, to you, it’s all about bringing everybody closer together. The truth is, I was just so tired before you, Tom. Tired of my chest pulling every time my little girl or boy would say “Dad and me.” Tired of making big parenting decisions alone. Tired of wondering if I’d ever find lifelong love again. But together, we have found a new path forward, one filled with so much gratitude and optimism. In that spirit, thank you for helping me refocus my energy on what’s important and more fully appreciate all of life’s gifts — every sweet text, every birthday party celebration and, yep, all 8,000 of those Settlers of Catan games. Our story will never be Option A. When you got divorced and I lost Dave, Option A was taken off the table. Every Father’s Day will be a little bittersweet in our house — but now, also filled with the happiness you’ve brought to my kids’ lives. And there will likely always be grief in my heart for Dave. But you know that, and you understand and respect it, which makes me love you even more. Thanks to you, I have come to discover that Option B can also be filled with profound happiness. There is so much joy to squeeze out of this new game plan. Thank you for helping me choose to see it.

Consumer Brief Summary This summary contains risk and safety information for patients about EYLEA. It does not include all the information about EYLEA and does not take the place of talking to your eye doctor about your medical condition or treatment. What is EYLEA? EYLEA is a prescription medicine that works by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF can cause fluid to leak into the macula (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye responsible for sharp central vision). Blocking VEGF helps reduce fluid from leaking into the macula. What is EYLEA used for? EYLEA is indicated for the treatment of patients with: • Neovascular (Wet) Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) • Macular Edema Following Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) • Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) • Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) How is EYLEA given? EYLEA is an injection administered by your eye doctor into the eye. Depending on your condition, EYLEA injections are given on different schedules. Consult with your eye doctor to confirm which EYLEA schedule is appropriate for you. Who should not use EYLEA? Do not use EYLEA if you have an infection in or around the eye, eye pain or redness, inflammation in the eye, or are allergic to aflibercept and/or any other ingredients in EYLEA. What is the most important information I should know about EYLEA? • EYLEA must only be administered by a qualified eye doctor. Injection into the eye with EYLEA can result in an infection in the eye and retinal detachment (separation of retina from back of the eye) can occur. Inflammation in the eye has been reported with the use of EYLEA. If your eye becomes red, sensitive to light, painful, or develops a change in vision, seek immediate care from an eye doctor • In some patients, injections with EYLEA may cause a temporary increase in eye pressure within 1 hour of the injection. Sustained increases in eye pressure have been reported with repeated injections, and your eye doctor may monitor this after each injection • There is a potential but rare risk of serious and sometimes fatal side effects related to blood clots, leading to heart attack or stroke in patients receiving EYLEA • Serious side effects related to the injection procedure with EYLEA are rare but can occur including infection inside the eye and retinal detachment • You may experience temporary visual changes after an EYLEA injection and associated eye exams; do not drive or use machinery until your vision recovers sufficiently • Because EYLEA is composed of large molecules, your body may react to it; therefore, there is a potential for an immune response (allergy-like) in patients treated with EYLEA What are possible side effects of EYLEA? EYLEA can cause serious side effects, including • See important safety information listed under “What is the most important information I should know about EYLEA?”

The most common side effects include • Increased redness in the eye • Eye pain • Cataract • Vitreous (gel-like substance) detachment • Vitreous floaters • Moving spots in the field of vision • Increased pressure in the eye There are other possible side effects of EYLEA. For more information, ask your eye doctor. It is important that you contact your doctor right away if you think you might be experiencing any side effects, including eye pain or redness, light sensitivity, or blurring of vision, after an injection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. What should I tell my eye doctor before receiving EYLEA? • Tell your eye doctor if you have any medical conditions • Tell your eye doctor if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. It is not known if EYLEA may harm your unborn baby • Tell your eye doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is not known if EYLEA may harm your baby. You and your eye doctor should decide whether you should be treated with EYLEA or breastfeed, but you should not do both How is EYLEA supplied? EYLEA is supplied in a clear, colorless to pale yellow solution. It is provided in a pre-filled glass syringe or glass vial containing the amount of product required for a single injection into the eye, which is 0.05 mL (or 2 mg of the medicine product). Where can I learn more about EYLEA? For a more comprehensive review of EYLEA safety and risk information, talk to your health care provider and see the full Prescribing Information at EYLEA.com.

SCREEN TIME If you feel that your family was wearing out their eyes staring at devices before the pandemic, you have to wonder what schooling, working and socializing remotely means for our physical, emotional and eye health. Fortunately, things are not as dire as they may seem. Here’s the latest on how to balance your family’s digital diet.

IN THE BEFORE TIMES (i.e., prior to the start of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders last March), kids and grown-ups alike already treated our devices almost as extensions of our brains. According to a 2018 Nielsen Company audience report, between smartphones, computers, video games, tablets, radios and TV, the average U.S. adult spent about 101⁄2 hours on screens each day. By February 2020, children between ages 8 and 12 spent an average of four to six hours using screens (presumably when they weren’t in school), and teens spent up to nine hours, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry reports. What’s happening now we can only guess, as data on pandemic-era screen use is still scarce, but most of us have noticed increased connectivity. Maybe your device has alerted you to how many more hours you scrolled, Zoomed or streamed this week than last week.

Much of this, of course, is due to the fact that we can’t gather together as safely as before— and our phones and computers enable us to function and perhaps earn a living, which is good. There’s not much we can do about the amount of time we have to spend plugged in right now to keep life moving forward. But experts say there are many ways to make sure our screens are enhancing our minds rather than turning us into giant piles of dead brain cells with aching necks and social-media-perfectlife influencer envy. “It’s a quality game, not a quantity game,” says Megan Moreno, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of adolescent medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and one of the authors of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) screen-use guidelines. “There are tools and resources for families to customize the types of media that work for their families as well as for individual members,” says Dr. Moreno. “Things like high-quality programs and games that help with not only knowledge, but also problem-solving, turn-taking and competing in friendly ways.” Below, expert tips on how to steer your family (and yourself!) toward mind-expanding media, ways to use it healthily and how to know when it’s time to power down altogether. Think beyond all-or-nothing While the AAP used to entirely discourage screen use for young children, the organization’s most recent guidelines no longer suggest a time limit on media use for children over 5, because screens can be used in many legitimately beneficial ways. The only age group that

doesn’t get anything out of screen use at all: children whose cognitive processing skills aren’t yet ready for it. “Kids 18 months and under have the least to gain from watching videos,” explains Jenny Radesky, M.D., an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School and an author of the AAP guidelines. That doesn’t mean a toddler will be harmed by a few episodes of Sesame Street while you clean the house or get dinner ready, but neither will it turn them into a baby Einstein. A bigger issue is that younger children exposed to hours and hours of TV may not get the face-to-face social interaction they need to develop, which is why it’s smart to keep screens to a minimum for them. For children over 5, the AAP recommends a “family media use plan” that emphasizes mindful interaction with the digital world, including balancing the use of programs and games that have a thoughtprovoking or educational element with time doing activities that don’t involve using devices. BE SCREEN SMART: It’s a relief when the kids are nice and quiet, but try not to forget about them—keep an eye out for signs that they need to switch up what they’re doing. If your kid doesn’t respond when you talk to them; your teen is neglecting chores or homework; or they won’t give up the devices without a fight, it’s time to limit screen use to school-related activities until some perspective is restored. Take temperament into account Just as all children’s content is not created equal, kids don’t all react the same way to different types of screen activities. Some get too revved up by apps or

games that deliver rewards for continued engagement or have a hard time unplugging from platforms that autoplay episode after episode. Other children’s eyes may glaze over while they’re on their devices, scrolling and scrolling, and they may seem sluggish or disengaged even after they stop. In fact, too much staring at screens, while it shouldn’t harm your child’s vision, can lead to eye fatigue, strain, dry eyes and headaches. Dr. Radesky uses a traffic-light model to explain how different kids react: Kids in the green zone are calm and responsive while using their devices and afterward. In the yellow zone, they’re hyper and overexcited and can be hard to distract. In the red zone, they’re totally checked out, and pulling the plug buys you a one-way ticket to Tantrum Town. Older kids may get sullen or combative or lose track of real-world tasks in favor of finishing “just one more level.” BE SCREEN SMART: Which zone is your kid in? Once you’ve figured that out, redirect a red or yellow zone kid to more “nutritious” programming. Games that are focused on creativity and puzzles, as opposed to ones that offer incentives for continued use, are good options; calmer, less flashy TV shows such as Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Arthur or PBS Kids programs are better than unboxing videos or action cartoons with lots of fighting and snarkiness. Common Sense Media (commonsense media.org), which offers age-based reviews of TV shows, movies, books, apps and games, can help you choose. If a kid gets stuck in the red zone, try setting strict time limits for their favorite media (or even taking it away for a week or two) and see if the

ZOOM FATIGUE, ANYONE? The struggle is real, people! Back-to-back meetings, then a FaceTime cocktail with friends…by the time you log out, you feel totally depleted. There are biological and psychological reasons for that: Humans subconsciously absorb and respond to a host of signals in face-to-face interactions that help us communicate, says Gianpiero Petriglieri, M.D., an associate professor of organizational behavior at INSEAD. On video, our brains have to put more effort into that processing, and this is mentally exhausting. Also, using the same interface for happy hour as for quarterly reports makes social time feel like work, so it isn’t as restorative as we need it to be. What to do? Try replacing some video meetings with regular audio calls, or take a socially distanced walk with a nearby friend instead of doing a Zoom catch-up.

are with or against others, so they’re inherently social,” says Jan Plass, founding director of the Consortium for Research and Evaluation of Advanced Technology in Education (CREATE). “They’re learning strategic communication skills, creativity, cooperation. So it’s not by default a waste of time.” BE SCREEN SMART: The bottom line is, if it’s a choice between a favorite video game and mindless cartoons, opt for the controller. But if screen time starts interfering with the rest of kids’ lives, it’s time to set some boundaries. Plass limits his own sons’ gaming to a couple of hours a day, assuming they maintain their grades. His family balances screen time with group hikes, sports practice and other offline activities to emphasize the importance of engaging with the offline world. behavior changes, Dr. Radesky suggests. Some kids (and adults!) haven’t developed the impulse control to be able to step away from reward-based media or the numbing, soothing activity of going down Internet rabbit holes. And give their eyes a break by prodding them to get up and focus on something in the distance for a bit, just as adults should do when working at a computer all day, to give the zombie stare a rest.

encourage screenfree soothing Scrolling for long periods can help us all chill out, but kids who are still learning emotional regulation shouldn’t rely solely on their devices for relaxation. BE SCREEN SMART: As tempting as it may be to give your child the iPad when they are upset or need to wind down,

hold off for a few minutes. Ask them to name their feelings, then talk about why they’re having them and figure out more appropriate responses together, says Dr. Radesky. This goes for adults too. “Technology is often serving in the role of an emotional comfort object,” says Anya Kamenetz, a parenting expert and the author of The Art of Screen Time. “Instead, sit with the feeling, notice how it feels in your body and take the opportunity to learn how to get more grounded instead of immediately distracting yourself from your feelings.” Go ahead, play games Even the least educational video games, such as those involving first-person shooting like Fortnite, can benefit kids’ social and cognitive development. “Most games kids like to play

Teach social media skills These days, online communities are one of the main ways kids can see their friends, so it’s important to let them join in. Still, social media can turn toxic because it’s an unsupervised space, free of parental presence and other signifiers of accountability, and it’s easy for things to get out of hand. “When you make a joke in person, you can see on someone’s face how they’re taking it,” Kamenetz says. “We don’t have that information when we’re just chatting with our friends online.” Social media can also increase depression and anxiety in teens who are predisposed to these conditions. BE SCREEN SMART: Walk your kids through how to recognize when the vibe of the group has

strayed toward bullying or when someone in it seems as if they’re not sharing in the fun. Check in with kids and teens about how their online spaces feel, suggests Kamenetz. Are they positive places that leave them entertained and supported, or do they come away drained, jealous or sad? She reminds her children that they can always opt out by muting a thread or leaving a conversation, and that they should cultivate kindness in their online communities. And if you notice your teen starting to withdraw from you more than usual, let them know you’re there to talk things through with them if they need you to. Build in boundaries and transitions Leaving some time between games and videos and, say, family dinner or bedtime can help prevent meltdowns or frustration when you suggest putting down the phone. Screens are very stimulating, Kamenetz says, so time is needed for that energy to dissipate before turning to another activity or winding down for sleep. BE SCREEN SMART: Kamenetz sets a timer that tells her kids when it’s time to put down their devices, then builds in five more minutes for the family to decompress. Dr. Moreno’s family members know when they should put their phones away (such as at the dinner table or when playing a board game) and hold one another accountable. Plass brings his kids’ digital lives into their real ones by talking at the dinner table about their favorite onscreen games, which often leads to conversations about issues in their lives that they otherwise might not discuss.

In a survey of nearly 1,500 women conducted by the Good Housekeeping Institute in December, some 65% of respondents said they’d get a shot the minute it was offered or soon thereafter. But 14% were fairly sure they wouldn’t roll up their sleeves at all, for various reasons. Some experts estimate that at least three-quarters of people would need to be either vaccinated or otherwise immune for us to contain the virus. That’s why we asked top vaccine experts to address what seem to be the main concerns. These three facts will ease your mind.

G H MARCH 2021

1

The vaccines are supersafe .

Among the GH Institute survey respondents who were hesitant, 34% voiced concern that all side effects might not be known. (This worry may keep a similar number from getting their children vaccinated if and when the shots are deemed safe for kids.) But experts say that in addition to proving that the vaccines are 95% effective, tests done in nearly 75,000 people have shown that they’re also well tolerated. “There were no higher rates of illness or death in clinical-trial participants,” says Robert M. Jacobson, M.D., medical director of the primary care immunization program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. True, only months have passed, not years. But it’s rare for unexpected problems to show up much after the fact with any vaccine — and the minute chance of that is dwarfed by the very real possibility that you could get very sick from COVID-19, says Peter Hotez, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Also reassuring: The vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna, the shots that had been approved when this issue went to press, use what is known as mRNA technology, with which vaccines are created from a genetic code without using any actual virus. This means it’s impossible to get the disease from the shot, as some did with the oral polio vaccine (OPV) in which whole virus was used. And manufacturers, as always, will be required to continue monitoring their vaccines and report adverse events to the Food and Drug Administration. Still, there are some known side effects, more common after the second of the two required injections: These include pain in the arm, headaches, tiredness, chills and fever. But rather than viewing these as unwanted visitors, look at them as signs that your body is building up a strong defense, experts suggest. If you have a history of severe allergic reactions, tell your doctor before you get the vaccine so you can be monitored. In December, as the Pfizer vaccine was being rolled out, several people with a history of severe allergies had anaphylactic reactions to it.

2

No corners were cut in testing. About 24% of

3

respondents hesitant to get vaccinated were worried because of how fast the vaccines were developed (after all, the effort was called Operation Warp Speed). Indeed, these vaccines have come in less than a year, whereas most previous ones required years or decades. But every step followed for other immunizations, like those for shingles and human papillomavirus (HPV), was followed here, Dr. Jacobson says, including testing in similar numbers of people and equally close scrutinizing of the results. So how did these vaccines come about so fast? First, scientists weren’t starting from scratch, having begun research decades ago. “People have been working in the lab on coronavirus research and mRNA technology for years,” says Onyema Ogbuagu, MBBCh, an infectiousdisease specialist at Yale Medicine and one of the principal investigators for the Pfizer trial. Once this virus’s genetic code became known early in the pandemic, creating a vaccine to target it wasn’t difficult. Plus, teams of researchers from across the globe pushed everything else aside to work on this; the U.S. government poured money toward the effort as never before; and COVID-19’s wide spread during the study period meant that test subjects came in contact with the disease much faster, allowing experts to assess how well the vaccines protected people compared with a placebo.

G H S U RV EY R ES U LTS :

Why Some Worry We surveyed almost 1,500 people, and among the small minority who were hesitant to get the vaccine, these were the top five reasons.

Plenty of oversight keeps everyone in check. If you don’t

have a great deal of trust in politicians, the government, pharmaceutical companies or the medical community, you’re not alone. Nearly a quarter of GH Institute survey respondents who were hesitant about a vaccine blamed a lack of faith in one of these groups. And that makes sense: Messaging from some elected officials has sometimes been confusing or even misleading, and in the past some Big Pharma firms weren’t always totally candid about problems with their drugs. But the majority of scare stories you hear are actually disinformation pumped out by an organized and wellfunded anti-vaccine movement with its own agenda and goals (including that of selling books), Dr. Hotez says. The reality is that drug companies and the federal government have the resources to pull off a feat like creating a vaccine to protect against a virus that at press time had killed more than 375,000 Americans. And both groups, along with outside medical and scientific experts, cooperate. In the U.S., unlike in other countries that may rely on info from companies, “the FDA demands the raw data from the studies so they can examine it themselves, and inspectors regularly watch the manufacturing process,” says Dr. Jacobson. So as you get your shot in the coming months, why not take a moment to appreciate the people whose work is getting us back to the regular lives we all miss so much? We’ll all feel better when that happens.

how pets

boost your health Your furry friend may be a wellness support you didn’t know you had! Here, four benefits you get from caring for a critter. by KAITLYN PIRIE

If you’ve ever curled up with a pet at the end of a tough day, you know the kind of stress relief we’re talking about. In fact, a 2019 study found that it took just 10 minutes of petting a cat or dog to lower people’s levels of the stress hormone cortisol. “Touch is a very important feature of humananimal interaction,” says Patricia Pendry, Ph.D., an associate professor of human development at Washington State University and the lead author of the study. Other research has shown that when you’re interacting with a pet, your brain releases the feel-good hormones oxytocin and prolactin as well as moodboosting neurotransmitters. “Particularly when you’re sitting with an animal, as you’re stroking it and feeling its warm fur, your body relaxes — not just your thoughts, but your physiology,” says Pendry.

86

G H MARCH 2021

2

Higher self-esteem

This may be surprising, but pet owners report having more self-esteem than people without pets. This likely comes from the sense of accomplishment a pet owner feels as a caregiver. “Providing a safe environment and responding to this animal’s needs — those are ways in which you’re giving loving support,” says Pendry. “You matter, because you’re responsible for that animal’s well-being.”

3

More social support

Pendry says pets are often referred to as “social lubricants” because of the way they can help people make friends. Just think about how hard it is not to say hi when you see someone walking down the street with a supercute puppy. Or about how you bonded immediately with a coworker after finding out you both had cats. Study after study has shown that

a key to staying healthy is having a network of people to whom you feel connected — and being a pet owner may help widen that social circle. Plus, critters themselves provide social support, especially for those who live alone. Pets have been a saving grace for some people who have been isolated during the pandemic.

4

maybe even a healthy heart!

Research shows that people who own pets have better cholesterol levels, reduced risk of high blood pressure and lower rates of heart disease than those who don’t. However, it’s hard to say whether that’s due to the animals themselves, notes Pendry. People who can afford to or have the energy to own a pet may already be at an advantage. “That’s not to say there isn’t that benefit — it’s just very difficult to prove,” says Pendry. But researchers aim to do studies to look into this, she says,

“because we want to really understand if there is a pet effect.” While we wait for results, give your cute ball of fluff a cuddle and a treat, and be glad that while you’re protecting their health, they’re returning the favor.

Does vitamin D help with immunity?

A: While it’s in no way the only vitamin necessary for immune support, research shows that vitamin D can help the immune system resist bacteria and viruses. This fat-soluble vitamin (you can get it through food, but it’s also manufactured by the body via sun exposure) assists with bone health and muscle function too. Foods rich in it include salmon, tuna and fortified items like some cereals and dairy products. One good natural source is eggs, specifically egg yolks. I love GH Nutritionist Approved Eggland’s Best Cage Free Eggs because they contain six times the vitamin D and 10 times the vitamin E (an important antioxidant that can also help with immunity) of regular eggs. That’s because Eggland’s Best hens are fed a wholesome proprietary all-vegetarian diet that results in particularly nutritious eggs. My go-to brunch is shakshuka, a savory one-skillet dish of soft-cooked eggs atop a mixture of tomatoes and peppers. It’s tasty, good for you and packed with antioxidants, fiber and protein.

WHY?

Fruits like apples, pears and cherries are high in FODMAPs, an acronym for a group of carbohydrates that are hard to digest (and pronounce). But oranges, clementines, tangelos, strawberries and blueberries are low-FODMAP fruits that may sit better. Ginger can help ease tummy trouble, but artificial sweeteners (coupled with carbonation) can irritate the gut and lead to uncomfortable gas and bloating. Plus, many varieties of ginger ale contain only flavoring, not real ginger. Opt for a soothing cup of tea instead. Certain cruciferous veggies contain a type of carbohydrate that’s hard for the body to break down, resulting in gas. You can still get your veggies in by choosing bell peppers, eggplant or green beans, all of which are low-FODMAP alternatives. Garlic contains fructans that can cause digestive upset. Try infused oil instead: In a small skillet on low, cook 1⁄2 cup olive oil and 5 cloves garlic (smashed) until very light golden brown, 10 to 15 min. Remove garlic before using oil. Refrigerate oil for up to 2 weeks. Not only are walnuts low-FODMAP nuts, but they’re also abundant in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which boost cognition. Peanuts, macadamia nuts and pumpkin seeds are other awesome low-FODMAP choices to crunch on.

Rotisserie Chicken Buying a premade rotisserie chicken is a good way to stock up on ingredients for meal prepping. Opt for a plump, evenly browned bird. Remove meat from the chicken while it’s still warm. Shred to serve on salads, in sandwiches or tacos, stirred into soups or as a mealmaker for dishes like enchiladas. The bones that remain can be turned into homemade broth.

Raw and cooked vegetables bring nutrients, crunch and color to the meal-prep plate. Once roasted, vegetables will keep in the fridge for three to five days, and they’re great stirred into pasta dishes, added to tacos, folded into scrambled eggs or tossed into salads.

Veggies benefit from the high, dry heat of the oven. Season with salt and pepper and spread in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet, with space between the pieces so they’ll caramelize well. Roast until tender and lightly browned, stirring once or twice during cooking.

Eggs

Dried Beans

Canned Beans

To cook, gently lower eggs into boiling water. Cook 6 min. for jammy yolks or 10 min. for hard yolks; cool in ice water (to stop cooking). Refrigerate in shells for up to a week. Grate hard-boiled on top of veggies, halve or chop and add to salads or slice and layer in sandwiches.

They’re easier to cook than you might think. The fastest way to whip up a big batch of beans is in an electric pressure cooker. Place them in the pressure cooker and cover with water; add salt and aromatics and cook at high pressure for 20 to 40 min., depending on the type of bean.

These are a healthy addition to the pantry. Look for brands that are lower in sodium and packed in BPA-free cans. Rinse and drain beans before adding to recipes like salads and soups or pureeing into sauces and dips (like hummus!).

GRAINS Keep these morsels on hand as an easy and healthy base for bowls and sautés. Grains also add a hearty bite when stirred into soups, tossed with salads or served as a side.

How to Store Cooked Grains First, let grains cool completely, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to five days. Or store them in the freezer for a month or more. To freeze, put in reusable bags with a thin layer in each; stack bags in the freezer (the thinner a layer, the faster the defrosting!). To reheat, microwave for a minute or two.

How do I know what kinds of knives to buy? — STEFANO M.

We test it, so you can trust it.

CHEF’S KNIVES goodhousekeeping.com

/bestchefsknives

A: Every home cook needs a chef’s knife for chopping, dicing and

slicing — think of it as the prepping workhorse you’ll use most often. (Chef’s knives commonly have 8-inch blades, but opt for a 6- or 7-inch one if you have smaller hands.) You also want a paring knife for very small jobs and a serrated knife for crusty bread, flaky desserts and delicate items like tomatoes. When choosing knives, look for ones that feel comfortable and balanced in your hand. If you can’t try them out in person, know that Western-style knives are typically heavier, with thicker blades than Japanese ones, which can be fragile but allow for more precise cuts. The handle matters too: Wide, nonslip handles encourage a good grip, while thinner ones allow for more control during use. More GH Lab Picks: Wüsthof Classic 8" Cook’s Knife, $160, wusthof .com (Western); Shun Classic Chef’s Knife 8", $150, williams-sonoma .com (Japanese); Misen Chef’s Knife, $65, misen.com (hybrid)

Q What is a Dutch oven? How can I use it?

— ELAINE B.

A: In short, it’s a heavy-duty lidded pot designed to brown ingredients before simmering on the stove or braising in the oven. It’s often made of heat-retaining cast iron (or enameled cast iron for easier cleaning and maintenance) but can be made of another material that’s lighter such as stainless steel or ceramic. The high-quality materials and craftsmanship make this a pricey but versatile piece that’ll last a lifetime. Five and a half quarts is a popular size for anyone looking to make anything from hearty stews to soups and pastas; smaller sizes are useful for sides and sauces, and larger ones are good for big batches of stock and chili.

Q

KRAMER BY ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS ESSENTIAL 8" CHEF’S KNIFE, $200

Some coffee drinkers prefer grinding beans just before brewing because it can yield a super-fresh-tasting cup. By comparison, pre-ground beans are exposed to more air, causing oils to dry up faster and depleting flavor. If you want to try grinding but are on a budget or short on space, try a blade grinder. Like a mini food processor (but with a blunt blade), it chops beans to a usable size. For more even, consistent results, go for a burr grinder, which works like a pepper mill. Manual ones are smaller and less costly, while electric ones are bigger and pricier, but more efficient—they allow you to select the grind size based on the drink and store beans right in the machine. Bottom Line: You can get by without a grinder, especially if you buy coffee in small batches. But using one helps you create a luxurious cup every time. Five Ways to Boost the Bright Side

In her new book, Your Fully Charged Life, Meaghan B Murphy, our former executive editor and resident supermom, delivers a welcome dose of positivity along with smart, realistic ways to be a better parent, partner and friend. Here, Murphy, now editor in chief of our sister brand Woman’s Day, shares her favorite tips on living with near-endless energy and deep purpose.

playing different games and the rules keep changing? You can’t. I think the idea of synergy is better. Synergy allows for separation and the combining or sharing of resources or elements when doing so adds even greater value. That’s what I strive for; I want different parts of my life to understand the others so they can cooperate. Because that helps me feel stronger, more equipped and like the whole complex, multifaceted person I am.

Treat Your Family Like a Team. When I’m out with my husband and kids and I yell “Team Murphy!” everyone comes together. And it has caught on; I got eight Christmas cards last year from “Team” families. Even more important is acting like a team. On Team Murphy, we understand our individual jobs, needs, strengths and weaknesses. We celebrate when one member shines extra bright and offer help and support when one struggles. When someone slacks off or makes

trouble (me included!), everyone gets a lecture and runs laps. (Kidding — usually just no Friday night movie or no video games.) We also give out awards for MVP and have benchwarmers and walk-ons too — grandmas, babysitters, cousins. Even if you don’t have kids, you can still field a team. At the end of the day, it’s about appreciating that you’re playing together, no one’s out there alone and everyone does their part to make magic happen. A decade in, our team isn’t perfect, but none ever is. It still feels like we’re winning.

Strive for Work-Life Synergy. Here’s the problem with work-life balance: It implies some degree of equality or even distribution of energy, time and importance. Trying for that is like trying for perfection — and we all know how that turns out. My job will never be as important as my family, but I sometimes have to sacrifice Team Murphy because my job also matters. Plus, the demands of life/family and work are so different and shift on a dime. How the heck can you keep score when everybody’s

I thrive on routine. Without it, my world and psyche would devolve into chaos and collapse. That said, knowing exactly what’s going to happen day in and day out sucks the excitement out of life and can make relationships feel robotic. As psychologist Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Hardwiring Happiness, explains in his book, the brain tends to filter out what doesn’t change (a process called habituation), and that can keep us from experiencing or creating opportunities for joy. Positive experiences, especially if they’re new or surprising, release a rush of dopamine to our feel-good centers and force us to pay attention. Happy surprises also hit our positive-emotion buttons harder than predictable moments of joy. They make us feel cared for and loved. And engaging in novel and exciting activities (vs. routine ones) with those we love improves how people view the relationship. Even if only for yourself, spontaneity is linked to better well-being, say other experts. Think of

simple ways to shake up the everyday or add a surprise, like when my friend Lindsey turned the bathtub into a ball pit for her toddler and his expression said it all: Best day ever! Or when I surprised my kids with a mystery bike ride to a rope swing over a pond (followed by a crumb cake breakfast!) — lightning bolts and hearts shot out of their ears. Try the new ax-throwing place instead of your go-to date-night spots, or have a trivia night. Or do a chore your partner usually does or has been putting off. Routine saves your sanity; surprises add spark.

I know people find rando holidays frivolous. But the harder things are or the more the world disappoints us, the more we need a reprieve. “Holidays” like National S’mores Day and Groundhog Day give you permission to prioritize fun, even just for a minute. It doesn’t take much effort or time to, say, get excited that graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate found each other and we can eat ’em together. And those little hits of happiness are one more thing to help stop the world’s dumpster fires from burning up your energy and joy.

Celebrate the Little Things.

Support Good Stuff Too.

Major holidays are easy to celebrate — they acknowledge worthy things like tradition, family and religious beliefs as well as gratitude, giving, love, mothers, fathers and independence. Don’t stop there. Embrace the minor and made-up holidays, and the ridiculous and random ones too. They offer opportunities to recognize and appreciate simple and silly things in life. Think Taco Tuesday, National Donut Day, the Super Bowl. (A holiday that celebrates snacks, parties, polarizing halftime shows and oh, yeah, sports? Yes, please!) One year I showed up for my April 1 workout in head-to-toe boring black, and everyone kept asking if I was OK before I yelled, “April fool!” Celebrating something makes the usual routine feel special and more fun. It’s essentially positivity in practice — an excuse and a way to focus on and savor what’s good.

My friend Francene is the most amazing hype woman. Although we’ve never actually met — we’re virtual friends who connected on Instagram — she high-fives all my wins and the everyday good stuff I share. It feels incredible, and I cherish this unlikely, special friendship. We all deserve a Francene, and we all should try to be a Francene for at least one other person. Most of us are better at showing up for friends in bad times — with a listening ear and a hug, a bottomless glass of Malbec or a freezer casserole. Aim to offer the same level of urgency, enthusiasm and support when things go right. When we take the good for granted, we’re missing a huge opportunity to capitalize on a person’s good vibes. In one study, researchers watched couples discussing both positive and negative happenings and asked how understood, validated and cared for they

felt, then followed up on their relationship later. It turns out that responding actively and enthusiastically to the good stuff a partner shares is what best predicts relationship well-being, even more than responding supportively to bad stuff. So when someone shares good news, get excited, ask questions, compliment, congratulate, talk about it. Because no matter how big your confidence or pride, no matter how much you recognize and appreciate when things go well, having someone cheerlead and megaphone your “yays” back to you drives those feelings — and the relationship — deeper into your heart.

Natural Training Treats for Dogs

GET MOVING WITH YOUR PET Those neighborhood walks may get old, but daily exercise has health benefits for both you and your four-legged friend. Here’s why you should get your hearts pumping and how to do it safely. by LIZZ SCHUMER

STAY ACCOUNTABLE. Having regular active play dates with your pet can keep you on track too, Nicholas says. “Not wanting to let your dog down can be a good motivator,” he adds. “Just having someone (or some dog) to exercise with can be more fun, which can translate to more motivation.” Establishing a routine can mean you’ll both look forward to it and make you less likely to bail. your pet already knows to get the two of you moving. “Whether it’s basic obedience training or trick training, it can be a great way to tire them out and to improve your bond with them,” Nicholas says. Playing fetch can also get both your heart rates up, especially if you run after the toy along with your pet. Nicholas also loves a scavenger hunt, in which you hide a toy or a treat and run around the house with your pet looking for it. If you have the space, running the stairs with your dog will get your muscles pumping too. TAKE IT SLOWLY AT FIRST. Dogs generally know how much activity they can take, but if you’re working out as well, they may push themselves to keep up, says Rover.com expert veterinarian Gary Richter, D.V.M. Unless they have a medical condition, most dogs need at least 30 to 45 minutes of activity per day, he says. Check with your vet (and your own doctor) before embarking on any exercise routine. Be sure you both stay hydrated while exercising, and don’t push past your natural limits.

A tasty treat you’ll feel good about giving

FEEL HAPPIER AND MORE RELAXED. Studies show that getting moving reduces depression and anxiety and can lift you out of a bad mood. It keeps your pet mentally stimulated too, which can mitigate naughty behavior, explains veterinarian and pet safety advocate Jason Nicholas, BVetMed. A tired pet is more likely to sleep when they’re alone than to get into mischief. “It can also help prevent excess weight gain and obesity, help your pet retain muscle mass as they age and keep their joints moving and comfortable,” he says.
