Wren Kitchens helped bring my dream kitchen to life ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

With a baby on the way, Mel Dawkes wanted to transform her kitchen into a stylish and functional space the whole family could spend quality time in together

Mel couldn’t be happier with her family’s sleek new kitchen

For more inspiration, search #Wrenovation 8

yourhomestyle.uk

T

he kitchen is the heart of the home for many of us, used not only as a place to cook meals but also somewhere family and friends can congregate. Being a multifunctional space means your kitchen should be able to work well for your everyday needs – which is Wren’s number one priority. No matter the size or layout of your kitchen, your Wren designer will work closely with you to ensure the end result suits you and your family’s lifestyle. To see how Wren collaborates with their customers to create bespoke designs, check out Mel’s family-friendly kitchen transformation. Her home is part of the #Wrenovation video series, which shines a spotlight on real customer kitchen renovations.

Mel was instantly drawn to the timeless appeal of the classic-style Shaker Ermine Pebble Matt kitchen when she visited Wren’s showroom

STEP ONE When Mel first bought her

home in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, with her husband Chris, renovating her kitchen was top of her list as she wanted this space to be the social hub of her home. Shortly after moving in, Mel fell pregnant, so the couple knew the space needed to work well for their growing family. ey visited their local Wren showroom to take a look at new kitchens. ‘A couple of our friends had recommended Wren,’ Mel explains. ‘What I really liked was you could see all the kitchen styles in the showroom,’ she adds. Mel was able to use Wren’s virtual reality technology in the showroom to visualise her new kitchen. ‘It was amazing! You could open cupboards and find out what did and didn’t work.’

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Wren Kitchens’ VR technology helped Mel visualise how her kitchen could look and function, such as choosing where she could incorporate handy storage spaces With expert advice from a Wren designer, Mel chose the curved edges for her kitchen to make it safe for her children

STEP TWO After spending time in the

showroom working with their Wren designer, the couple opted for an Infinity Plus Shaker kitchen in Pebble and Graphite. ‘It’s a style that stands the test of time,’ she says. Helping bring Mel’s vision to life, their designer was able to suggest practical safety measures to ensure the kitchen was a family-friendly space for her children. e curved units are not only stylish but remove any sharp edges, and the worktop features an out of reach push down USB and power socket. ‘It’s really useful for my mixer when I’m baking,’ adds Mel.

STEP THREE On the kitchen’s arrival

day, Mel was so excited she says it felt like Christmas. ‘When the kitchen started taking shape, it took my breath away,’ she recalls. With built-in CDA appliances, an impressive American-style fridge freezer, and stainless steel handles throughout, Mel is really happy with the end result. e whole family are able to spend quality time in the space, with the children sitting at the island while Mel and her husband cook together. ‘My top tip to anyone planning their new kitchen would be to make a list of everything you want to fit into the space,’ says Mel. ‘is gives you a foundation to build around and create the kitchen you really want.’

DRESSING UP

We moved into our bungalow last year during the first lockdown and have been slowly updating it. When I’ve been off work due to lockdowns and my husband is still working, I’ve tried to use the time as productively as I can. It’s not been gardening or allotment weather recently, so I decided to make this dressing table my first upcycling project on a budget. I used GoodHome Milltown paint and lined the drawers with Muriva colour of the drawer fronts so decided to keep them natural but used Rub ‘n Buff wax in gold leaf to update them and the other fixings. As a hairdresser, I love being creative and really enjoyed the process. I learned a few things along the way and am delighted with the results. Paula Williamson, by email

Into the jungle

As with so many people during lockdown, we’ve been decorating our home. We’ve lived here for five years and moved into it when it was a new-build, so we have white walls and plain

adding colour but this year decided to be brave. As our downstairs loo is the smallest room, it meant I could go wild! I put this wallpaper up on one wall after painting the others. I don’t think I’ve done a bad job given it’s the first time I’ve ever wallpapered. Emma Young, by email Your Home says: Emma, this wallpaper is amazing – such a polished finish! We love the jungle theme and the forest green paint you’ve paired it with.

statement dresser, Paula! We especially love the wallpaper you’ve chosen to line the drawers with.

★ Paula’s letter has won her a Wild

Vanilla Studios luxury home fragrance gift box worth £57!

Upcycling love During lockdown, I came across this tired

looking unit that someone had left out for scrap just across the road from us. Never having done anything like this before and with plenty of time on my hands, I decided I’d take on the challenge with the help of my other half. We sanded, primed and repainted the unit, then sprayed the handles and replaced the back with some new plywood, all for less than £50. We’re so pleased with the outcome and have a newfound love for old furniture. Jodi Kemp, by email Your Home says: What a great transformation, Jodi! We love the shade you’ve chosen – it’s such a classic.

Pot luck While waiting for spring planting weather,

I decided to repurpose my son’s IKEA changing table into a potting bench. I used bits lying around the house and some halfused spray paints. I now have somewhere to sow seeds and store all my gardening equipment. I used a Perspex greenhouse windowpane as a backboard so as not to block out the light. I’m very happy with the results, even if it’s a little bright. Laura Rolley, by email Your Home says: The brighter the better we say, Laura! What a creative way to use old furniture for gardening.

HOW TO... clean your barbecue

Buy it once

• If there are still bits of food stuck to the grill after use, try steaming them off. Allow the barbecue to cool slightly, then lay water-soaked newspaper on the grill and close the lid. Leave to steam for half an hour. It should dislodge any stubborn remnants of food and grease, ready for a deep clean.

If you’re looking for a way to put your kitchen and garden waste to good use, get your hands on the Blackwall 330L Black compost converter. Suitable for small gardens and made from recycled plastic, its eco credentials are impressive. Simply place the bin in a soil-covered spot and fill through the hatch lid. Finished compost is collectable from the hatch at the base and you could even sell it to neighbours if there’s excess! Priced at £26 from Evengreener.

• Next, it’s time for a good scrub. Create a simple

solution of washing-up liquid and hot water and scrub well with a grill brush with wire bristles. If that doesn’t do the job, opt for a designated barbecue cleaner. Alternatively, depending on the type of barbecue you have, the hotplates or grill might fit nicely into your dishwasher, saving you a lot of elbow grease. Just make sure to dry immediately after to prevent any rusting.

HACK

• To finish the job, try rubbing down the grill with

attached to your barbecue, too. Bacteria can thrive here, what with raw meats coming into close contact, so make sure to give them a good wipe down with antibacterial cleaner after using.

Toothbrushes aren’t just useful for bathroom cleaning. They’re also handy for cleaning the rubber seal on a washing machine. Simply scrub the rubber seal, then add a cup of white vinegar to the drum and wash on the hottest setting, before wiping dry. Also, try using a toothbrush to remove limescale on taps. To help breakdown the limescale, wrap a white vinegar-soaked cloth around the tap for a few hours before you start scrubbing.

a coating of sunflower oil. To do this, dip a wad of paper towel in oil, but be careful not to use too much as it could causes flare-ups the next time you grill. Oiling your grill will further help to prevent rust and make sure food doesn’t stick to the wire rack the next time you use the barbecue.

• Don’t forget to clean any side tables that are

Come rain or shine, it wouldn’t be a British summer without barbecues. So, it’s time to brush off any cobwebs and get your grill looking sparkling clean ahead of all the garden gatherings this June…

WE TEST… SENSITIVE laundry detergents

Things we considered: Did we like the scent? Did it irritate our skin? How well did it clean?

Surcare sensitive nonbio laundry liquid, £5.25, Sainsbury’s Approved by Allergy UK and containing no fragrances, dyes or enzymes, this detergent caused no irritation to the skin at all, so it would be ideal for those with little ones or sensitive skin. With virtually no scent, it’s a fuss-free laundry detergent that’s gentle on fabrics while still cleaning them effectively and protecting them from fading, even on cool washes. You only need 35ml per wash so a little goes a long way, and it’s kind to your purse!

Neroli laundry detergent, £8.95, KINN Living For those who prefer a light, delicate scent on their bedding and clothes, KINN’s Neroli detergent leaves fabrics feeling super-soft without leaving an overpowering perfume. Kind to the skin, the plant-based formula is fully biodegradable and is gentle enough to be used for the whole family’s laundry. Our white wash came out sparkling, and the recyclable packaging features easy-to-read instructions for differing wash sizes and levels of water softness.

8/10

Eco-strips laundry detergent, £13.99, Tru Earth These eco laundry strips take up minimal cupboard space and are easy to use – tear the strip into pieces and add to your detergent dispenser, as you would a liquid version. In terms of scent, you can choose from Fresh Linen or Fragrance Free. The latter is ideal for those with sensitive skin as it cleans clothes effectively without a noticeable scent. Although these strips are the most expensive option, they tick the zerowaste box.

7/10

Ecozone soap nuts, £5.99, Lakeland Used for thousands of years as a natural washing detergent, these sustainably sourced nuts are packed with natural surfactants that clean and freshen your clothes. Hypoallergenic and biodegradeable, simply zip the nuts in the cotton bag included and pop them in the drum with your laundry. Free from chemicals and scent-free, the nuts shouldn’t irritate sensitive skin while they tackle dirt on your clothes and keep colours brighter for longer.

TREND ALERT…

T

Plant power

Welcome the natural world into your home by embracing texture, pattern and all things botanical

ake cues from your favourite botanical gardens with this natureinfused trend that’ll transport you to faraway tropical jungles and forests teeming with greenery. Inspired by a concept called biophilia – the innate human affinity for the natural world – this scheme embodies relaxed, modern living while harking back to times of greater connection between ourselves and nature. It’s all about replicating those feelings of refuge, exploration and calmness that natural spaces give us. First and foremost, you’ve got the green light to go completely overboard with houseplants. We’re talking snake plants in the bathroom, a herb garden on the kitchen window sill and trailing plants cascading from every visible shelf. It would be rude not to! And don’t worry if you’re a serial plant killer; even faux plants have an uplifting effect and you get to skip the watering duties. en, extend the botanical vibes by bringing natural prints and patterns into your space. Leafy jungle prints are a must! Colour-wise, you’re looking for shades that are calming yet invigorating – green is of course a hallmark of the look. Blend bright hues like lime, emerald and seafoam with more grounding variations of green, such as muted mint and sage. If you’re not one for maximum colour, keep the walls, flooring and furniture neutral and let the accessories and plants do all the talking. Natural light is key, so keep window dressings to a minimum. Sheer floaty curtains will let as much light in as possible and allow you to make the most of the beautiful view, inside and out. KID’S ROOM MAKEOVER

We wanted something cute, cosy and Scandi-inspired

Hoping to avoid colour clichés when decorating her two-year-old daughter’s room, Aimee Worrall selected a neutral palette and natural tones, with DIY details for a low-cost scheme

hen they bought their first house in August 2017, Aimee, 28, and her partner, Ezra, 29, were excited by the prospect of being new homeowners. ‘We were renting a very similar Victorian property in the Worcestershire area,’ explains Aimee. ‘is three-storey house ticked lots of boxes for us, especially as it was close to the train station, which is handy for Ezra’s work. e previous owners had done a lot to modernise the house, but over time we realised every room needed some attention.’ e couple got to work on their new home, painting and decorating the space from top to bottom and sharing their ideas on Instagram @houseofwaffle. When Aimee was expecting Etta, they decorated a nursery for her, but, after two years, Etta had outgrown her space and the room desperately needed updating. ‘It looked like a baby’s room and it wasn’t practical for a toddler either,’ says Aimee. In November 2020, they hatched a plan to turn the nursery into a bedroom, fitting the task around childcare and full-time jobs.

STEP ONE e previous owners had

used this space as a bedroom for two young boys, so it had bunk beds, a desk and a wardrobe. ‘e room is quite small, and it was overcrowded with furniture so felt even smaller and darker!’ says Aimee. One of the first big changes was to move a long, cumbersome radiator that took up a whole wall, limiting what could be put into the room. ‘Positioning the radiator under the window gave us more options with the

STEP TWO As they were squeezing the

decorating around busy work schedules, they decided to split the project into two halves. e first part was painting the walls to cover the mural that was part of the original nursery décor. en, Aimee painted the colour-block wall with a scalloped edge. ‘I used Etta’s wooden rainbow play set as my template and marked the arches with a pencil. en, I painted it by hand,’ she shares. ‘I liked it so much that I decided to follow the paint effect to the other side of the room.’ Originally, Aimee wasn’t going to paint the chimney breast, but when she hung the mermaid print above the mantle, she felt that it needed a background colour to draw Aimee personalised IKEA’s Duktig toy kitchen, which she bought second-hand, attention to the artwork. ‘Painting the whole with paint and dowels so it ties in with her scheme. room’s layout. It was a no-brainer!’ says Aimee. Her mother’s partner made bespoke built-in wardrobes for the awkward alcove to maximise storage space. With the layout sorted, Aimee turned her attention to the décor and decided on a gender-neutral colour palette. ‘I wanted to avoid any stereotypes when picking colours for Etta’s room. I looked for earthy, dusky tones and natural textures, like those in Scandinavian homes. I wanted to repurpose as much as we could to save money and for environmental reasons, too,’ she says. e starting point for the colours was a framed Kid Of e Village mermaid print, which hangs above the little fireplace. ‘I matched colours in the print for the walls and these tones sit so well with

KID’S ROOM MAKEOVER Consider height levels when creating a room for a toddler. Aimee placed breakables higher up and toddlersafe items, like bookshelves, lower down, so Etta can help herself to books

Keep greenery safely out of reach from little hands with a plant hanger. Crafter Aimee made her macramé hanger herself: ‘I did a twohour workshop and haven’t looked back!’

Aimee was creative with paint and upcycled existing furniture to keep costs down. ‘Just be brave and give it a go,’ she says. ‘Our biggest expense was the canopy for £50’

she says. Next, Aimee repositioned the furniture in the room, moving Etta’s cot bed to the other side of the room so that it faced lengthways. ‘is gave us more space to fit in a little IKEA storage unit for Etta’s toys and clothes and gave her a surface to host tea parties,’ she says. ‘at unit used to be in our downstairs pantry cupboard and was filled with shoes that we never wore. As it wasn’t serving any purpose, I moved it in here, cleaned it up and it was good to go.’

I spray-painted the Etta’s imagination. Aimee hung artwork tap and sink black, decorated it with dowels, on the walls, and installed hooks for the painted the legs and added new half-moon macramé planter. ‘I’ve always wanted to put handles. ere are even hooks to hang her real plants in here, but they needed to be up teacups,’ says Aimee. ‘She absolutely loves high so Etta couldn’t reach them. I fitted a entertaining herself in her kitchen!’ wooden bracket to hang it out of harm’s way,’ Now the room is finished, Etta likes says Aimee. Above the bed, Aimee hung a nothing more than to sleep under her canopy. linen canopy to create a cosy feel at bedtime. ‘e room feels very cosy and bright now. She Bookshelves were installed at toddler height, loves playing in here, especially as all her toys so that Etta can reach her books when she are close to hand. Our daughter’s bedroom is full of fun!

Danielle converted her guest room into a bedroom for her daughter, Alice, filling it with colourful rainbows and prints to match her little girl’s bubbly personality Working on a small budget, Danielle and Andy did a lot of the DIY themselves. ‘We reused as much of what we had already as we could, and then invested in good-quality toys,’ reveals Danielle

ith a baby on the way, Danielle Lisle and her husband, Andy, both 32, were keen to move closer to their relatives in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, in 2018. ‘My mum and dad came up with an ingenious idea,’ says Danielle. ‘ey suggested we move into their four-bedroom townhouse. ey wanted to downsize so it was perfect timing.’ e couple started personalising the house straight away, sharing their décor ideas on Instagram @atthelisles. ‘Our box room was

turned into a nursery for Alice,’ she says. But, within three years, Alice had outgrown the space. ‘We had toys spread all over the house as she had nowhere to play.’ Danielle came up with the idea of moving Alice into the unused guest room.

Danielle designed Alice’s new bedroom around the key principles of the Montessori method, where children learn and play in an environment that allows them to be independent. ‘It was about giving her independence, with a dressing area with hairbrushes and bobbles, a teepee, where she could play with her teddies, a reading nook, a hideaway with her music and fairy lights, and a fancy-dress area,’ she says. ‘It was like creating a little village in her bedroom with the bed as the centrepiece.’

they stripped the wallpaper and painted the walls in a fresh coat of white. ‘I kept the walls neutral, so if she did change her mind in the near future it’s easy enough to update.’ Splashes of colour were introduced with a hand-painted mural, and Alice even picked the rainbow paint colours herself on a trip to B&Q. ‘We let her be involved with the makeover process so she could get excited about the room in advance, which really helped.’ Using string and a pencil, Danielle drew out the rainbow by hand. On the other side of the room, using Frog tape, she masked out little houses. ‘It was tricky painting it freehand but if I made a mistake it was easy to paint over with white,’ she explains. as much as they could to save money and be eco-friendly, Danielle upcycled old furniture. As Andy is good at DIY, he hacked an IKEA bed to create a house shape for Alice with a reading nook underneath. ‘I showed him a picture on Pinterest and then we came up with our own design.’ ey bought the bed from Facebook Marketplace for just £40 and sourced wood from a local timber yard. e outside was clad, then painted by Danielle. Now, Alice sleeps all through the night and will happily play in there on her own. ‘It’s a lovely space for us to enjoy,’ says Danielle. ‘is room has seen her blossom and makes her so happy.’

KID’S ROOM MAKEOVER

A wild theme helped our son settle in

When it came to moving her son, Arlo, from his nursery to a larger room, Lisa Weaver created a jungle-inspired scheme to make the change as easy as possible for him

H

aving moved in seven years ago, Lisa Weaver, 40, an interior designer, and her husband, James, had already spent a lot of time extending and decorating their four-bedroom, end-of-terrace home in St Albans, Hertfordshire, before they had their son Arlo, aged four. However, with the arrival of their second son, Charlie, now 18 months, they realised they needed to refresh the bedrooms again so Arlo could move out of his original room into a larger space. ‘Our main bedroom was on the top floor and the other bedroom was used as a home office, so Arlo was originally in the small box room. When I knew Charlie was on the way, we needed to move Arlo into the larger third room,’ says Lisa. ‘I knew it wouldn’t be easy as he loved his little box room, and I didn’t want him to be jealous of the new baby having his old room.’ To make it as appealing to him as possible, they were inspired by his love of animals – and the fact he’d amassed hundreds of jungle soft toys, from snakes to lions, over the years – to make his new, age-appropriate room one he couldn’t wait to move into.

‘I didn’t feel the need to change the flooring, as it was in great condition – and, as needed in all kid’s rooms, the wooden floor would make it easier to keep clean,’ admits Lisa. e walls were stripped and washed down, and everything was painted white, which would make it an easier surface to work on.

STEP ONE Lisa decided to get Arlo

STEP TWO Now the room was a blank

as involved as a four-year-old could be in designing the room, fully aware that he’d ask for real-life animals in his room, rather than toy ones. ‘I discussed the ideas with him and suggested things that would work and we could easily achieve. I love the colour green and the jungle-themed room would help bring the outside in. And I’m always up for a bit of extra creativity,’ says Lisa. As Arlo was happy with the concept, they got started on clearing the room of old boxes and junk. Luckily, they could keep the original, white-washed floorboards, which had only been fitted in the last year or so. 32

canvas, Lisa could start putting the scheme together. ‘I started to make a mood board and found a jungle wall mural, but after getting the sample I felt it was a bit too lime green. While I wanted a jungle theme, I didn’t want it to feel too young, babyish or nursery-like – I wanted the room to appeal to all ages so In a child’s room, there’s no such thing as over the top – Lisa didn’t hold back on adding faux plants to her scheme. ‘I really went to town and added then wherever I could, even trailing them down the sides of the wardrobe. I’m surprised Arlo hasn’t touched them, but I think he doesn’t want to spoil the jungle feel.’

Lisa’s scheme is bursting with DIY touches, including a charity shop lamp upcycled with faux foliage. ‘I wanted it to be quirky. With a glue gun and some foliage panels from IKEA, I was able to recycle something old and give it a new lease of life,’ smiles Lisa

STEP THREE Lisa wanted Arlo’s

transition from a cot to a child’s bed to be easy for him. ‘I had been quite anxious about this and had been putting it off,’ says Lisa, ‘but I found one of these really cool house beds, which wasn’t too high, so if he did fall out it’s not too far. Arlo also liked the idea of living in the jungle and seeing all the animals from his bed. Being such a fan of e Jungle

Fit for an explorer, the framed bed and forest-green walls give the room a cosy, restful feel. Lisa also added gold stars, clouds and a moon so Arlo really feels like he’s camping out in the jungle

he could have it for a while and not outgrow it.’ With this in mind, Lisa searched several websites and found a more muted, darker green wall mural from an Etsy seller called Moons and Flowers, which has leopards, trees and vines. Lisa decided this would work as a statement wall, and picked out one of the greens from the design to paint the other walls in. ‘ree Farm Green from Little Greene really gave the room a warming feel without feeling too dark, complemented the mural and pulled the scheme together. I love that it feels cosy but not gloomy,’ she says.

The wall mural blends grown-up style and childfriendly motifs, so will work for Arlo as he gets older. Lisa has incorporated plenty of storage, choosing an IKEA unit with movable baskets and doors

KID’S ROOM MAKEOVER Lisa’s collection of gold frames from over the years has finally found a home in Arlo’s new room. ‘I had planned to paint them, but the gold works with the jungle theme by adding the big cat’s head and artificial leaves’

Lisa made the most of the space behind the door by adding a height chart. ‘Arlo loves checking if he’s grown each day and it makes full use of every area in the room,’ reveals Lisa

Book and Mowgli, he was super keen.’ Once the bed was assembled, Lisa entwined lots of greenery around the poles, and toy snakes around the bases. She decided on a full-sized adult wardrobe in pine, which had been left in the house by the previous owners. ‘It’s really sturdy and I was thinking of painting it, but the wood works well for a jungle look,’ she says. ‘Storage is essential in any child’s room, so I grabbed some Kallax shelving from IKEA and used rattan baskets and doors to hide away his books and toys, which keeps everything in its place and out of view.’

enthuses Lisa. She stuck to the green theme with some heavy velvet curtains and softened the look with lots of rattan accessories, including the decorative round floor rug. ‘With my creative hat on, I dressed up an old lamp shade with some artificial leaves I had bought in IKEA for a fun update.’ She also added some tall wooden giraffes she’d picked up on her travels pre-children, and then filled the room with lots of Arlo’s soft toys. STEP FOUR e room now felt functional Now expecting their third child, they’ll and had all the storage needed, so Lisa have more decorating to do to accommodate wanted to add the fun finishing touches. ‘I’ve the new arrival. ‘Arlo absolutely loves his lots of old gold mirrors and frames, which room, and the transition from baby to toddler I used on the chimney breast wall. I kept room was made so much easier,’ says Lisa. ‘I the mirror in one, but used the rest to frame now have to come up with another theme, as letters, a plush lion’s head and animal prints, at some point we’ll have to move Charlie into and it really made a feature of the wall,’ a bigger room, once the new baby arrives.’

For a playful vibe, polka dots are a must. You may think this pattern is best kept to a children’s room, but there are ways to modify the print to make it suitable for adults too, especially if your scheme aligns with a cosy cottage aesthetic. For an elegant, countryside scheme, opt for small and dainty dots in pastel shades, but for something a little more extravagant, you can blend larger spots with geometric prints to make a style statement – think polka dot rugs alongside geometric-print bedding. Alice Henderson from I Love Wallpaper suggests mixing your prints: ‘Keep it simple with a monochrome spot print and team it with a geometric pattern in the same colourway’.

fruity

Fruit-inspired furnishings are cropping up everywhere this summer. Whether they come in vibrant colours or pastel prints, the trend is a playful way to bring a slice of summer into your home. Natalie Tupper, Senior Designer for Oliver Bonas, gives her take on how to bring this growing trend into your home. ‘To me, fruity prints are the essence of summer arriving. Bursting with colour, the fruit should look good enough to pick straight from the print and pop into your favourite cocktail. Within the home, pairing fruity illustrations with grounding geometric prints, checks and stripes gives them a real sense of fun. Placing these prints in your kitchen, with tea towels, tablecloths and napkins, will also add vibrancy to your cooking and dining area’.

geometrics

Many people associate geometrics with strong, heavy lines and bold statement prints, but this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. In fact, you can blend other types of patterns, such as botanical prints, with geometric designs to give your space a softer edge that won’t overwhelm the room. Steven Rowe, Head of Design at Tesco, explains that ‘leafy botanical prints alongside geometric shapes are all the rage this year, and the tropical-inspired style can’t fail to boost your mood the minute you enter the room. Large leafy plants in geometric planters are also one of the easiest ways to bring a nod to this pattern to your home’.

For summer, don’t stick to the standard animal-print colourways, mix it up a bit with some muted tones or vibrant shades – think leopard print in mint green for your bedding, or steer away from the safari theme altogether and opt for a timeless nautical look with Sophie Allport’s lobster-print tableware. Head of Product Design at I Love Wallpaper, Alice Henderson, thinks that the key to success when mixing animal prints is to run one consistent theme throughout: ‘When clashing wallpaper designs, pick a matching colour to tie the room together. Try to stick to two variations of mixed patterns so that the space doesn’t become too busy and accessorise with solid complementary colours throughout. If you want to soften the transition between prints, use a muted palette to pare down the clash’. June 2021

KITCHEN PROBLEM ROOM

Our kitchen is now a This sunny room now gives Meriel Tolhurst-Cleaver’s family the

INSIDER INFO WHO LIVES HERE?

Meriel Tolhurst-Cleaver, 33, and her partner, Jack Hodd, 34, live here with their young daughter, Edie, and cat, Susie. Meriel is a paediatric doctor and Jack is an intensive care doctor. They live in a Victorian terrace in Chorlton, Manchester.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE ROOM?

It’s so bright! We used to have to turn the lights on during the day as the space was so gloomy before.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS?

Expect the unexpected. Our drains weren’t where we thought they would be, so they had to be tracked beneath the house, which meant we had to remove the chimney stack and shore them up the wall.

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD KITCHEN?

It didn’t give us the multifunctional family space that we wanted, plus it was too dark ttonrA-reklaW anoiF sotohP ralliM idnaM erutaeF

ith little Edie on the way, Meriel and Jack quickly realised they needed more space in their terrace home. ‘Although the kitchen had already been opened up into the adjoining dining room, it was still too small and looked tired. We wanted this area to be the main focus of our family life with more surfaces to prepare food and have a breakfast bar for quick snacks, plus we wanted to use it as a space to relax and dine in. We needed more light in the area too, but with no way to reconfigure the existing space, an extension was the answer,’ explains Meriel. Although the couple’s plans seemed straightforward, the project wasn’t without its hitches. ‘The glass roof was the most problematic – the builder and I nearly cried when it shattered during the installation! When its replacement started slipping out of

its frame, we thought the worst. However, with some urgent remedial work we were able to reinforce the fittings and a structural engineer has now signed it off, but that was pretty nerve-wracking at the time!’ recalls Meriel. ‘The glass roof, for all its challenges, is now one of my favourite features as it lets in so much light throughout the downstairs’. Meriel’s husband, Jack, has always loved Crittall-style windows and wanted them in the house, so the couple asked Jane Leach of iArchitect if there was a way to make them work in the space and get the area to seem twice as big. ‘Jane designed the glass door in between the kitchen, living room and hallway, which brought plenty of light to those spaces and made the area seem bigger,’ says Meriel. ‘The roof, doors and windows appeal to the Scandi style I like, but we also wanted to highlight the period features of

the house, so we made the reclaimed brick chimney breast in the living area the focal point as a nod to the house’s heritage.’ Now that the family have finished the work in the kitchen and have had a chance to make use of the space, they’re delighted with the outcome that they achieved on an affordable budget, but there is one thing they would still like to add to the space. ‘Since using the new space, we can safely say it’s delivered on every count, but the one thing we might add is an integrated blind on the roof lights as it can get very bright on a sunny day,’ admits Meriel, ‘but we shouldn’t really complain too much about the sunshine!’

Meriel loves pared-back design, so chose steel-framed Crittall windows and doors that are functional too, flooding the extension with sunlight

Wrap the floss around a 5cm-wide piece of cardboard 25 times. Tie a short length of thread through the floss at one end to bind the tassel – its ends will become a tab for hanging. Remove from the cardboard and cut through the loops. Cut a 4cm circle of felt, fold in half and snip a small slit halfway along the fold. Unfold and then insert the tab through the hole. Spread out the thread, apply hot glue to the felt and fold in half. Turn over and glue the other side. Carefully brush the threads then trim the tassel to neaten. Repeat steps one and two to make the required number of tassels. Glue the tabs of the tassels, evenly spaced, around the top and bottom edges of the lampshade and trim the tabs. Glue the black ribbon along the edges then finish by gluing the crochet ribbon over the black ribbon.

Measure a third of the way down from the top edge of the cushion cover then unpick the seams along both of the sides to the approximate width of your crochet ribbon. Cut a length of ribbon about 2cm longer than the width of the cushion. Insert the ends of the ribbon into the gaps in the seams, pin together and then stitch the seams back up. Make tassels following steps one and two for the hanging planter. Tie extra knots into the hanging tab. Pin each of the tassels at regular intervals under the bottom of the crochet lace until happy with the placement. Using a matching thread colour, stitch the crochet ribbon and tassels onto the front of the cushion cover. Make sure you catch the tabs of the tassels with your stitching to ensure they are firmly attached to the cover.

Make your garden feel bigger and brighter with a windowpane-style mirror and a shelf for summer blooms

A

dding little displays and features to your garden is a fantastic way to spruce it up without spending a fortune, and this garden mirror revamp is the perfect example. Using some lead tape, a wooden plank and some outdoor-friendly paint, give a plain mirror a windowpane makeover and add a sturdy box shelf to display your favourite pots and greenery.

SHOPPI NG LIST ✔ Plank of wood (we used a piece from an

old pallet) ✔ Wooden mirror ✔ Pencil ✔ Set square or ruler ✔ Saw ✔ Sandpaper ✔ Drill ✔ Screws ✔ Gorilla wood glue ✔ Wood filler ✔ Card ✔ Masking tape ✔ Rust-Oleum surface primer ✔ Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch spray paint in Black ✔ Tape measure ✔ Self-adhesive lead strip tape

1

3

6

7

1

Cut the wood to make your shelf. To do this, measure the width of your mirror from one outside edge to the other, then use a saw to cut a 10cm-wide plank of wood to this size. Sand the cut edges to remove any splinters and smooth them off. Next, cut and sand two 10cm square pieces of wood; these will form the two side edges of your shelf. To put the shelf together, first place the main shelf piece down flat, then butt the two 10cm pieces of wood up at right angles on either side of it. Drill two pilot holes through each side edge piece, working from the outside of the wood, through into the cut edges of the main shelf. Drive a screw into the wood at each pilot hole, to securely fasten all three of the pieces together to create the shelf. With your shelf complete, fit it around the bottom edge of your mirror. Place it into position, then use a pencil to mark the edge of the mirror onto the inside of the shelf. Remove the mirror, then work a series of pilot holes inside the line you just marked out. Fit the shelf back onto the bottom of the mirror, adding a line of wood glue along the edge. Continue working each pilot hole slightly into the wooden edge of the mirror, and then work a screw into each hole until the mirror and shelf are firmly fixed together. Leave the

wood glue to dry, removing any excess that may have squeezed out. Add a dab of wood filler to cover any screw holes that might be uneven. Use sheets of card and masking tape to completely cover the glass of the mirror, ensuring it is covered right up to the edge. Apply two coats of spray primer all over, leaving it to fully dry after each coat. With the mirror primed and dry, apply two coats of Painter’s Touch spray paint in Black, again leaving to dry thoroughly between each one. This spray paint is specifically designed to be used both indoors and outdoors, so should be safe against the elements.

5 6

7

With the paint completely dry, it’s time to add the lead strips to the mirror. Remove the card and masking tape from the glass, and clean it all over to ensure it doesn’t have any dust or paint on it. Measure the width of it, then cut two pieces of lead stripping to this size. Apply each one across the front of the glass, ensuring they are equally spaced. Measure the length of the glass, from top to bottom. Cut a piece of lead strip to this size, then remove the self-adhesive backing and apply it down the centre of the mirror. Finish by adding a hook or other hanging equipment to the back of your mirror.

8

Top tip

The spray paint we’ve featured in this project is designed to be used both indoors and out, but if you want an extra layer of protection from the elements, you could also apply a coat of varnish.

✔ Contrasting fabric, 0.5m, or ready-made piping, 3.6m ✔ 5mm piping cord, 3.6m ✔ Sewing machine with a zipper foot ✔ Main fabric, 2m ✔ Co-ordinating thread ✔ 400g fibre filling ✔ Twine ✔ Large darning needle ✔ Erasable fabric marker

1

To create your own piping, take the contrasting fabric and cut several 5cm strips on the bias (at a 45-degree angle). Sew them together to make one continuous strip. Fold the fabric in half around the piping cord and sew in place using a zipper foot to ensure the stitches stay close to the cord. Take the main fabric and cut it into four squares that measure 45 x 45cm. Take one of the pieces, with the right side (RS) facing up, and lay the piping along the edges of the square, then pin – it’s best to start in the middle along one side of the square. The raw edges of the piping should be aligned with the raw edge of the fabric. When the ends of the piping meet, they should overlap and point towards the raw edge of the material. Stitch the piping to the main fabric using a 1.5cm seam allowance – continue to use the zipper foot to stay close to the piping. When sewing over the ends of the piping, ensure the ends are towards the raw edge of the fabric. Using the contrasting fabric, cut 8 strips that measure 5 x 50cm; these will create ties for the cushion. Fold with RS together and sew down the length of the fabric strip. Turn the strips to the RS and press flat to form the ties. If you are using a directional pattern, determine which side is the top edge and measure 5cm in from each corner. Place two of the ties on top of each other at the 5cm mark and pin in place, then sew it securely. Repeat these steps for the other ties.

2

3 4 5

62

yourhomestyle.uk

6

Take the other square of main fabric and lay it on top of the piece with the piping attached. Line up the raw edges, making sure that the ties are tucked in between the front and back of the cushion. Pin all around leaving a gap of 10cm along the same side as the ties. Sew all around the cushion using the previous stitch lines as a guide and remember to leave a gap. Once stitched, snip the corners and turn the cushion to the RS. Fill the cushion, pushing the filling into the corners then stitch the gap. To create the points for the mock tufting, divide the cushion into three sections and find four equally spaced points and mark with a fabric pen; these points should be equally spaced apart and be an equal distance from the sides of the cushion. For example, if the finished measurement of the cushion is 42cm, the points for the tufting should be 14cm apart. When you mark the points, ensure they are the same on the

7

front and back as these marks will be the entry and exit points for the needle. Thread the darning needle with fine twine and push it through the cushion at the entry mark and out through the exit mark on the back. Leave the thread in the cushion and remove the needle. Re-thread the needle using the end of the thread at the front of the cushion, taking care not to pull the thread out. Insert the needle again approximately 1cm from the first entry point. Pull the needle all the way through to the back of the cushion close to the first exit point. You should now have a loop at the front of the cushion and two tail ends at the back. Take the tail ends and pull them to create a ‘dimple’ in the fabric at the front. Tighten by tying the tail ends together and check the depth of the dimple at the front before making a tight knot to secure. Snip the ends of the twine then repeat for the remaining marked points.

One of the easiest ways to entice nature into your garden is with a small wildlife pond – and it’s easier than you might think to build your own!

W

e all share our gardens with a range of birds and beasties, but by making a pond, however small, you can create a useful habitat for all sorts of wildlife, as well as an attractive feature for your garden. It’s a two-person job, and you’ll reap the rewards quickly, with new creatures appearing within weeks. A successful wildlife pond is all about balance – a good mix of aquatic plants and open space, of shallow muddy bits and deeper water. e more variety you can add to the pond, the greater the diversity of plants and wildlife it’ll support. But don’t fret that you’ll have to spend lots of time on pond care – once a wildlife pond is in, it should just need a little autumn clear-up and spring refresher.

SHOPPI NG LIST ✔ Spade ✔ Builders’ sand ✔ Fabric pond

underlay ✔ Broom ✔ Butyl pond liner (roughly length of the pond x twice its depth) ✔ Hosepipe ✔ Pebbles (for the beach) ✔ Rocks (for basking) ✔ Edging stones ✔ Strong scissors ✔ A selection of pond plants and planting baskets

64

1

When digging out the pond, aim for a bowl shape, with gently sloping shallows which, as they descend, flatten out into planting shelves. Think of the shape resembling that of a snail’s shell, with the shelves coiling around the edge, down to the deeper central hole. Remove any stones or roots that could pierce the liner. Cushioning the pond’s liner is allimportant, to avoid punctures. If you’re digging your pond in an existing border, as we are here, it’s important to protect against stones or stray roots in the soil. Add a 3cm layer of damp builders’ sand, which is fairly cheap and easily moulded to the pond’s contours. The second layer of protection for the liner is a tough, man-made fabric underlay, which is light and easy to handle. We added this extra layer because of the garden’s stony soil, while the fabric is also a good barrier to roots. Shape it to the contours with a brush-head and hold in place with a few bricks. Manoeuvring the butyl liner into place is awkward – it’s really a two-person job. Lift the liner across the full width of the hole before lowering it into place. Alternatively, secure the rolled liner on one side of the hole with bricks, then carefully unroll it, smoothing it into the contours as you go.

2

3

4

1

2

3

4

yourhomestyle.uk

5

Now for the chilliest part of the build. Set the hose running, using the weight of water to mould the liner into all the contours, while you fold large, flat pleats where the liner overlaps. It’s easiest to do this from within the pond (in bare feet to protect the liner!), but you could lean in from the edges if it’s too cold. Frogs, small animals and birds like to bask and bathe on sunny days, so a gently sloping pebbled ‘beach’ makes the perfect spot for them, and gives easy access in and out of the water. We’re using a deep layer of cobbles, pebbles and gravel, and a semi-submerged ‘basking’ rock, all washed down to remove dust. Work your way around the pond with the edging stones, ensuring they sit firmly on the liner, supported by a flat bed of earth, so they don’t wobble. This way, there’s no need to cement the stones in place – just make a house rule that no one walks on them! Once the edging is in place, cut away any excess liner. Gently lower the plant baskets on to the shelves. After planting, the pond water will be cloudy for a week or so and is likely to turn green because of nutrients being introduced. It will clear as a healthy balance is achieved. To reach into your pond to place, say, a water lily, tie string through the basket and over a pole.

Q

I’d like to retile my bathroom soon. What are the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles? Taylor Hartman, Bedford Kamila Chalfin, Marketing and Brand Manager at Tile Giant, says… Choosing between ceramic and porcelain tiles depends on how you plan to use the tiles in the bathroom and the overall look you want to achieve. Before you start any tiling project, it’s really useful to understand the differences between the two materials. Porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures, producing a highly durable tile. Not only do porcelain

tiles deliver a stunning natural finish, they absorb less water so are ideal for bathrooms. Porcelain tiles can be more difficult to cut, which is something to bear in mind if you’re planning to do the job yourself. Ceramic tiles are also available in a wide range of colours, sizes and finishes to suit walls and floors but can chip when something heavy is dropped on them. We recommend choosing ceramic tiles for your walls and porcelain for your bathroom floor for a long-lasting finish. Easy to clean and maintain, the use of inkjet printing has transformed the styles now on offer, making it possible for you to easily bring the look of wood, concrete and marble to your bathroom for less, with a wide range of ceramic and porcelain tile options.

How can I make my galley kitchen seem bigger while maximising cooking space? Amira Parmar, London Andy Briggs, Interior Designer at Optiplan Kitchens, says… To maximise space in your kitchen, make sure to keep surfaces clear. The best way to achieve this is to be savvy with your storage. There's often a lot of dead space in a kitchen, both inside cupboards and high up on the walls. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets or larders work well as not only do they accentuate the height of the room, they also allow you to store all your essentials while not ruining the visual aspect of the kitchen. As well as physically creating space, there are also ways to make your kitchen look and feel bigger with light. Ensure the room is full of natural light by installing wide windows and glass doors where possible. Spotlights are great for small kitchens as you can include as many as you need without making the space above you feel too close. Long-line floorboards that run the length of your galley will also create the illusion of a longer space, particularly when drawing your eyes towards a door or window.

What should I consider when choosing a new fridge freezer for a large family? Len Morrison, Blackpool Zonnie Burton, Marketing Manager at Montpellier Fridges, says… The number one thing is space! If you have room to play with, American-style side-by-side fridge freezers are unwaveringly popular for large families. Aside from ample chilled space, they offer a host of features, such as a water dispenser, a handy door alarm in case they’re left open and a child lock to protect against inquisitive little hands! For smaller areas, a tall fridge freezer is the perfect solution. Consider whether you need more storage for fresh or frozen food – or the same – as you’re given the option to choose either an equal split between the fridge and freezer (50/50) or a larger fridge and smaller freezer (60/40 and 70/30 splits are standard). Also, consider the refrigeration system. For example, the Total No Frost system brings two benefits: fresher food for longer and the freezer automatically defrosts itself, eliminating a lot of hassle. Q

I recently moved into a new flat with a balcony. It’s pretty small, but I wondered how could I best utilise the space for summer? Naomi Turner, Newcastle Christine Gouldthorp, Communications Lead UK at PriceRunner, says… There is still plenty that can be done to decorate a smaller balcony and give it a homely feel. Firstly, create a space you can sit in and enjoy – either for a morning coffee or some peace and quiet with a book. Compact furniture is key. From foldaway bistro sets to stools and outdoor coffee tables, there are a number of options that will help to make your balcony a functional yet enjoyable space. Rather than keeping some space free, another option is to fill the whole space with one lounge set, preferably with built-in storage space, then add comfy cushions and throws to create your very own cosy corner to relax and unwind. Add tea lights and festoon lighting to enjoy your balcony into the evening.

Good things come in small packages and that’s certainly true when it comes to growing. There’s plenty you can grow in pots and planters hung from the railing or exterior walls to add some lush greenery. Finally, make the most of

a small space and your savings by checking the price history of products before you buy. Not only will this help your budget go further, but you won’t fall into any sales traps when creating your Pinterest-worthy spot.

Q

I want to update our garden with some outdoor tiles. Please could you explain what types of tiles there are to choose from and how we go about installing them? Samantha Conway, Canterbury Dean Quinn, Brand Communications Manager at Tile Mountain, says… There are two main types of tiles that are suitable for outdoor use. The first are natural stone tiles such as granite, limestone and slate. These look great but will require sealing when installed and can be costly. The second are porcelain tiles, which are available in a wide choice of sizes and finishes, and can replicate the look of natural stone and wood. Porcelain tiles do not require sealing and are available in 18 to 20mm thickness variants and anti-slip finishes. Ideally, outdoor tiles should be laid onto a pre-prepared concrete screed base that has been left to cure for six weeks. We recommend fixing them to this with a suitable adhesive, such as Mapei Adesilex P4, and then applying an anti-mould grout. If a concrete base isn’t an option, consider using a product like the RockTite Exterior Porcelain & Stone System. These specially formulated products are designed to allow porcelain slabs to be laid onto a hardcore base. Alternatively, if you rent a property or don’t have the skills to install a patio using the

I’ve personalised my rented cottage with upcycled finds REAL HOME

Taking on an unloved farm cottage, Danecia Scheepers has found clever ways to update her rented home

It’s not always necessary to splash out on new units. Danecia found a butcher’s block in IKEA to use as an island, and added tongue and groove panelling to match the existing units

W

hen Danecia Scheepers and her husband, Ray, realised they wanted to put down roots in the countryside, rather than a town or city, they began their property search. ‘We’re used to space, views and light and we worked out that somewhere rural would be right for us. I was actually brought up near the Kruger National Park, South Africa, so to be surrounded by fields and farms here suits us down to the ground.’ e couple met while both working in London, and rented a flat in Kensington, but once they’d had their son, Raydan, an amalgamation of both their names, they knew 72

yourhomestyle.uk

they wanted to move out of the capital to a more rural location. ‘We thought about Essex and Kent as possible places to move to, and we drove around at the weekends looking at potential towns and villages.’ Having family in Sevenoaks who they wanted to be near, the couple concentrated on the area fanning out from Tunbridge Wells in Kent. ‘We wanted to be in the countryside, but with a village nearby for all the amenities. e Kent Weald is an area of outstanding natural beauty, which really appealed to us.’ Chancing on the quaint village of Lamberhurst, with its half-timbered houses,

pub, school, and thriving community, the couple were sold and searched the countryside around it. ‘ere really wasn’t much for sale, but as we were making such a big move, we really wanted to rent first anyway, before committing ourselves.’ Finding a farm cottage in need of some love and attention, Danecia and Ray took it on, and four years later, are still there in the fully renovated property. ‘e views are incredible and it’s very much what we had in mind for Raydan’s childhood, being able to just walk out of the back door and be in the fields, getting muddy on the riverbank and seeing the horses in the nearby stables.’

Craving wide, open spaces, the rural location drew Danecia and Ray to this rental farm cottage in need of a little TLC. Danecia knew she could upgrade its unloved interior

When they moved in, talented stylist Danecia knew she had to set to work. ‘Most of the walls were bottle green or pumpkin colour. It all felt very dark and closed in. But I was convinced I could make a big difference.’ So, Danecia painted the whole house from top to bottom, bringing in neutral, soft colours, and changing the furniture and fittings with her mixture of finds from charity shops, house sales and the pieces she has made herself. ‘I love reusing and recycling pieces of furniture and changing them into new pieces. I paint, reupholster, make soft furnishings and sometimes build things myself, with the help of Ray, who gets persuaded into dragging back all sorts of things from the beach, the woods, or some far-flung sale.’ Danecia’s philosophy with clients is the same as she uses in her own home. ‘I’m not going to start encouraging people to buy

expensive things they don’t need. Yes, invest in a few special pieces, but look around you and see what you can reuse first.’ Because the couple are on a long-term lease before they find the right place to buy, Danecia is also careful with what she buys for her own house. ‘If you are renting, you need

to think seriously about what you will be able to take with you when you move on. Don’t be tempted by something with enormous proportions like a dresser or a table for ten unless you have somewhere to store them, as they may not fit in the house you eventually buy.’ Danecia recommends reasonably sized tables, chairs, and storage units as good buys, along with rugs, plain curtains, fun bedding and cushions. ‘ey are things that make a real difference to a house, but can be easily packed up and moved.’ Sticking with her own advice, Danecia has gone for simple tab-top, white curtains in every room, rather than made-to-measure blinds, shutters or anything patterned. ‘White goes with everything, and you can just pull them off the poles, wrap them up and put them up elsewhere.’ Over the four years, Danecia has updated each room in turn, incorporating her own ideas and adding pops of colour in cushions, murals and fresh flowers. ‘Because we’ve got nature on our doorstep, I love bringing fresh flowers and greenery into the house. ere are plants everywhere.’ Having spotted the lovely old wooden floor in the dining area, Danecia just polished it up to make it more of Find a styling trademark and use it throughout for continuity. We wanted to make our own mark on this house

After two years, a lot of hard work and nightmare builders, Kate and Chris Sandhu have finally made their Victorian property their own, with a spacious new layout, plenty of colour and print, and modern-vintage décor It’s worth planning your budget so you can spend more on fittings that’ll have a real impact on the space. ‘Our one big splurge was the Crittall doors we bought for either end of the open-plan kitchen,’ Kate says. ‘They make the space feel so much lighter’

A

n east-Londoner at heart, Kate Sandhu vowed to never, ever move south of the river – but that was before she, and husband Chris, started to outgrow their ‘hugely overpriced’ Hackney flat, and simply couldn’t afford to buy a house in the same area. Something had to give and, in the end (and much to Kate’s surprise), it was the location. ‘We came across Nunhead almost by happy accident as a friend had 78

moved to nearby Peckham, and we just fell in love with it,’ Kate recalls. While it wasn’t her beloved Hackney, it did have many things going for it, including a great community, friends nearby and more affordable housing, which meant that the couple could upgrade from a flat to a three-bed house. On the wish list was more space to hopefully raise a family in and somewhere that they could really put their stamp on.

However, the search wasn’t a straightforward one, and they viewed close to 30 properties with no luck, either writing them off for not being a good fit or being outbid on occasions when they did choose to put an offer in. ‘is house came onto the market as a previously agreed sale had fallen through, and we didn’t hang around – we went to view it immediately,’ Kate says. ‘We were the very first ones there. We loved it, and so we offered the owner the full asking price if they agreed to take it off the market immediately. And that was that – we bought our home.’ Kate describes the state of the property when they moved in as being liveable, but

grim. ‘It had no hallway, the pokiest little living room that you couldn’t fit five people into, a dining room with no windows and a black kitchen with silver glitter reminiscent of some kind of spaceship,’ she says. e kitchen also had an illegal extension that didn’t meet building specs and, as a result, made the room feel freezing, and there was lots to be done about the unusual and impractical layout of the ground floor, too. ‘It was on three different levels, which was odd, and the ceilings were super low,’ Kate recalls. e rough plan was to rebuild much of the house, and the renovation work was scheduled for February 2018. e hallway would be torn down, along with the existing kitchen, downstairs loo, dining room and pantry, and an open-plan kitchen, living and dining space with a new WC would replace them.

However, cowboy builders ended up making what should have been a three-month job take nine months, causing masses of stress and financial concerns as costs got ever more expensive. ‘e building company turned out to be awful,’ Kate says. ‘ey subcontracted the work without asking us and after a while we could tell things weren’t going to plan as communication was difficult and supplies were delayed. It eventually materialised that they had under-priced for the job and didn’t want to do it. ey had stopped paying the sub-contractor and were using our money to work on another house nearby, and then they pulled out altogether and left us two months into the build with half a house and a hole where the kitchen should have been.’ Raising a complaint with the Federation of Master Builders would’ve meant living without a kitchen for months while the dispute was mediated and a solution found, which, understandably, just wasn’t doable for Kate and Chris. In the end, the subcontractor agreed to finish the work. ey were in luck, but also an extra £10k out of pocket. ‘At

Plus, they really did get the opportunity they so wanted to put their stamp on a place. ‘It was a real doer-upper, and so we love that we have been able to make it our own – particularly knowing what it took to get it to this stage – and give a bit of ourselves to the house, too,’ Kate reveals. ‘Houses are around for way longer than humans, so there’s something poetic about being part of this one’s story.’

I’ve filled our home with travel-inspired treasures

A lifelong fan of all things colourful and eclectic, Polly Hamilton has given a lacklustre 19th-century property a new lease of life with unique finds from antiques markets and trips abroad

B

ehind the tile-clad walls of an unassuming Victorian house, just a stone’s throw from bustling Barnes, Polly Hamilton has lovingly created a carefully curated family home that’s become a punchy fusion of colour, personality and imaginative touches. ‘It certainly has been quite the journey for my husband, Max, and me, to transform what was a bland, rather cramped, three-bedroom house into a larger, family-friendly home, full of cherished treasures and unusual artefacts that we’ve collected over the years,’ Polly reveals. Polly’s love affair with colour, textiles and pattern began as far back as she can recall. ‘I’ve always enjoyed the buzz of shopping in places like Portobello Road and, as a teenager, I remember buying bright orange saris to give my bedroom the appearance of a Bedouin tent,’ she says. ‘e theme for my 21st birthday was ‘All the Colours of the Rainbow,’ which was, I guess, the shape of things to come.’ As Polly’s burgeoning passion for design and interiors grew, so did her desire to travel. It wasn’t long before both interests became inextricably linked. On every holiday, ‘my first stop would often be the local market where I’d spend many an hour in seventh heaven, seeking out a patterned rug or piece of striking fabric,’ she smiles. Excited to display her treasured finds, Polly has styled every surface with quirky ornaments. Her keen eye scored her the vintage coffee table from Phoenix on Golborne, the sofa on eBay, and the slipper chair from Sunbury Antiques Market

Polly has kept the pink and green running into the dining room, where she added rainbow Eames-style chairs for a playful touch. The Neptune table is extendable, and stylish pendants provide task lighting

‘Having set up a viewing, we immediately put in an offer, thinking that it wouldn’t be too long before we’d inject the neutral interior with a riot of colour.’ The Downton chandelier from Graham & Green and gallery wall are both talking points with guests. Linking the kitchen to the dining room, the collection is a fusion of unusual artwork and photos

With planning permission granted, work began while the Hamiltons oversaw the project from a rental home nearby. ‘We decided it made sense to go the whole hog, installing underfloor heating, and updating the electrics and plumbing throughout. e project snowballed and, in the end, every single room was altered in some shape or form,’ Polly adds. PARK UP SAFELY WITH YOUR OWN DRIVE W

If you’re fed up with the hassle of on-street parking, consider converting your own front patch into off-street parking instead

hen buyers search for a new property, private parking is usually a big draw and, if you are lucky enough to own a building with its own spot, it might fetch up to 13 per cent more than similar properties without, according to property valuers Petty Son and Prestwich. Having your own personal parking space brings many benefits – it’s quicker, more secure, less distance to carry your groceries and easier to clean the car on a Saturday morning. So, if your home doesn’t currently have a driveway, here’s how to turn a front terrace into a practical parking spot. 102

PLANNING PERMISSION

Whether or not you need planning permission will depend on a few things, mostly whether the material you want to use is permeable or nonpermeable. If using non-permeables such as slate then you will need permission, as well as when installing a hardstanding of more than five square metres and if there is no area for water to run off and soak away. As well as contributing to the risk of flooding, non-permeable materials damage the environment necessary for wildlife to flourish, so it’s not a very ecofriendly option. However, if you are using a permeable or semi-permeable surface then water is able to drain through so you would not need planning permission – think gravel, permeable block paving, porous concrete and asphalt. You will definitely need permission if the parking space involves dropping the kerb.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Step up your kerb appeal while adding privacy and security to the front of your driveway with Screen With Envy’s gate collection, which come in various materials and a swing or sliding opening – with or without automation. Prices start from £1,600

‘Once you’ve got your driveway in place, it’s important to keep it maintained so you don’t lose the kerb appeal you’ve worked so hard for. A regular wash down using a stiff brush or broom is one of the most effective ways to keep it in top condition. To help concrete driveways withstand harsh weather, apply a sealant every two to three years – it’s best done during the warmer months.’ Lee Dunderdale, Product Manager at Bradstone

Add a gate to the driveway to boost security and privacy. Jacksons Fencing offers a wide range of styles in timber and metal

CONSIDER THE COSTS

When you already have a parking spot but it just needs a bit of an uplift, there are plenty of inexpensive ways to give it a new lease of life. First, start by sweeping away any debris then give it a pressure wash. Next, repair or replace any broken, cracked or loose paving blocks or slabs and reseal the driveway. Consider adding a stain to change its colour and add an attractive border. Add a brick, paved or wooden border and think about planting up some colourful flowers or shrubs. You could also include some lighting along the sides for security as well as illuminating the path, and take a look at the front of your property in general. By sprucing up other areas such as the front door and windows, you can easily create some lovely kerb appeal.

DROP THE KERB

When you’re starting from scratch, you may need to drop the kerb in order to drive cars in and out safely. You will need to request planning permission from your local highways department, and the results will vary depending on where you live and your council’s policy. According to myjobquote. co.uk, a non-refundable application fee is around £70-£100 and in most cases, you will need to use a council-approved contractor to carry out the work, with an average cost of around £800-£1,200. There will probably also be an inspection by the council before any work can start, which costs an additional £180-£220. Extra costs will incur if there is anything beneath the ground that needs protecting such as water pipes or any obstructions that need removing. June 2021

If you want to turn your garden into a driveway, then when budgeting you’ll need to factor in the material you choose, the cost of labour, the size of the new drive, whether or not you need to drop the kerb, the condition of the foundations under the garden as well as the design you have in mind. There are plenty of specialist companies who can advise and offer an initial idea of cost. Some permeable materials, such as resin, are quick and easy to install, reducing costs. It can also be laid over older asphalt or concrete drives. Resin is made from recycled, natural materials, so it’s a sustainable choice. Paving blocks allow you to create patterns, while gravel is the cheapest option (which has the handy security bonus of being noisy when driven and walked on).

ADD A GATE

Available at Wickes, Marshalls’ Driveway block paving in Charcoal has a bevelled top surface for a practical finish and costs £18 per sq m

For the perfect finish to a new driveway, a smart gate offers both privacy and security. As well as providing protection, a gate and perimeter fence will boost your home’s desirability while potentially adding value at the same time. Consider wooden or timber designs and soften the look with carefully selected planting and landscaping. While ornamental metal options suit period properties, timber is more traditional and works with all styles. Think about whether you want a solid or slatted design, something that is easy maintenance and perhaps even an automated gate. These are convenient and secure, and give you full control over who has access. If choosing this option, it should be installed by a registered engineer to ensure it complies with all standards. 104

CHOOSE LIGHTING

Outdoor lighting is a practical and stylish addition to your driveway, and you can choose to have it hardwired to a switch indoors, or to have it turn on automatically as the sun goes down. There are many different styles, materials, colours, fitting types and features available. The easiest is ground spike lighting, which you can wedge into the lawn or flowerbeds to illuminate the outer edges of the drive and the path to the front door. They blend into their surroundings and help create a track for cars to follow when entering the drive. Solar-powered designs are more ecofriendly while ground bollard lights add a bit of wow factor. There are also pagoda styles that you can install in the grass, as well as lights on poles or pillars and those that can be built into the paving itself.

For the new driveway, the couple, who had been living with Jess’s parents until they were ready to move in, chose a stone resin finish instead of block paving, which they felt would be cheaper, longer-lasting and weed-resistant, too. ‘We went for the resin-bound type, which is where resin and stone are mixed together before laying,’ explains Matthew, ‘in a silver grey shade that contrasts nicely with the red brick of the house.’ As the drive is nonpermeable, essential drainage channels were laid in front of the house to prevent run-off, which can lead to flooding. Now settled in their new home, the couple are happy with the lowmaintenance surface they chose and have no regrets about losing their front garden. However, the importance of planting hasn’t been entirely ignored and there’s now a dense evergreen laurel hedge creating year-round screening in front of the new perimeter wall.

Garden UPDATES

This month, handy hacks for keeping your plants well-watered, statement seating, perennial picks for a floral display and our guide to climbing plants

BASKET OF GOODIES Make the most of a patio, garden wall or even a bijou balcony with a hanging planter or two filled with fragrant herbs or trailing blossoms. Before you settle on where to hang your basket, check how much light and how protected the spot is from the sun and the wind. Vegetables grow best with five to six hours of full sunlight a day, so if you’re in a shadier spot herbs such as parsley, coriander and chives are a safer bet. Don’t forget to water your baskets regularly too, as depending on their waterproof membrane, they’ll drain faster than soil or planters. Dobbies has a wide range of hanging baskets, pots and planters to prettify your plot, with prices from £12.99.

SUNSET SEATING Soak up the summer sun in comfort with the Shell rattan string bistro set from Morrisons, priced at £95. Enjoy your morning coffee, a WFH lunch break or barbecue dinner stretched out in the chairs, and style them with outdoor cushions and a throw for when the temperature dips. With an ombré orange pattern, the three-piece set is sure to bring some warmth to your patio or decking.

HYDRATION HERO Ensure your potted shrubs and

houseplants aren’t left languishing in the summer heat with an Aquasolo from Hozelock. Simply screw a filled water bottle onto the device then dig the ceramic end into the soil for a self-watering device that’s ideal if you’re heading away for the week or just a little forgetful when it comes to watering your plants. As the ceramic end dries, more water is pulled through, so no more over-watering either! Priced at £6.83 RRP from Hozelock stockists.

GARDEN IDEAS

P

Above all else, spend time in your garden this June, during what’s arguably the most beautiful month of the year

erennials are the backbone of any beautiful garden but it’s during June that they make the biggest impact. Such is their versatility that no matter what soil type or aspect your garden offers, there will be a wide selection of perennials suitable for these conditions. And it’s always worth adhering to the old adage ‘right plant, right place’ because plants will perform well and live longer if they are getting the right

amount of light, nutrients and moisture they require to keep them in good health. Claire Austin (pictured) of the awardwinning nursery Claire Austin Hardy Plants has over 30 years’ experience growing herbaceous perennials and only sells varieties she feels are worthy of a position in the garden as well as being reliable growers. ree of Claire’s top picks include the stalwarts, Alchemilla mollis, Sedums and

With the aival of June comes the departure of frosty nights, making it safe to grow tender vegetables outside.

Knautia macedonica. For eye-catching focal points, she recommends including Hybrid Herbaceous Peonies and Bearded Iris of which she holds the National Collections. While they may not flower over a long period, their unique beauty is something to look forward to each year. With the arrival of June comes the departure of frosty nights, making it safe to grow tender vegetables such as tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans outside. e same applies to bedding plants for window boxes, hanging baskets and containers. If they have been started off in a greenhouse or heated conservatory, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions by putting them outside for a few hours each day for about a week. is is also the month to sow seeds of biennials such as wallflowers, hollyhocks, foxgloves and honesty. ese will flower in the spring of 2022, and will be well worth the wait.

GARDEN IDEAS

SIX OF THE

BEST

climbing plants

1.

Make use of the unlimited vertical areas of a garden with climbers that will add an extra dimension of colour, form, foliage and fragrance and be easily appreciated at eye level.

1.Half-hardy climbing annuals

It’s not too late to sow the seeds of fast-growing annuals that naturally reach for the sky, such as Cobaea scandens (right) and morning glory (left). Direct sow the seeds into the soil (with full sun) or start them off in pots.

2.Roses

Roses enrich gardens with their classic beauty. Choose either a climbing rose that is highly scented, disease resistant and produces flowers over a long period or a rambling rose, which is more likely to give one spectacular flush of copious blooms. Commonly referred to as the ‘flame flower’, this climber produces bold swathes of tightly packed scarlet blooms, which looks stunning when grown through green shrubs. It prefers acidic soil and likes to have its roots in the shade and top growth in the sun.

4.Clematis

Members of this diverse plant family can be found in flower at any given month of the year. From vigorous to compact, in an extensive range of single and bi-coloured blooms, these upwardly mobile plants are a great asset to any garden setting for a country cottage feel.

5.Evergreen climbers

Climbers that stay in leaf all-year round are invaluable for providing habitats and food for wildlife. Use them to transform the appearance of bare walls and fences. Trachelospermum jasminoides has the bonus of carrying highly scented white flowers in summer.

6.Honeysuckle

A much-loved cottage garden favourite that is also a favourite of moths, butterflies and pollinating insects. There are plenty of vibrant colourful forms but the native yellow and white honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum, is hard to beat for fragrance.

VERTICAL VISION

Climbing plants usually only require a small footprint of ground space so can easily be accommodated in compact gardens. In addition to growing them against walls, up arches and around obelisks, several summerflowering climbers look particularly eye-catching when allowed to scramble through shrubs, especially early-flowering spring shrubs that have finished their annual display and will remain green for the remainder of the growing season. Boutique SPEAK

SHOP OF THE MONTH

We go behind the scenes with Alice Searle, owner of online boutique Little Deer Describe a typical day

When you run a small business there’s no such thing as a typical day! Some days I’ll be designing new products, planning shoots and events, or working on our socials. Other days, I’ll be in our warehouse making furniture and packing orders, checking stock and catching up with the team. We’re based by the sea on the south coast, so I get the day off to a good start by cycling to work along the seafront!

What do you enjoy most about running Little Deer?

There’s so much I enjoy, but I particularly love the variety each day brings. I’m very fortunate to have a team of four talented and hardworking women who handle the majority of the packing and making. It’s freed me up to be able to focus on new designs and product ranges, researching and implementing ecoconscious changes like our tree-planting scheme and interacting with customers on What is your favourite interiors trend? our social media – I honestly enjoy it all! Pair industrial pieces with natural textures Dried flowers and grasses – I love the texture for a boho scheme with a modern edge they bring to a room, plus they’re really lowmaintenance. They can be soft and neutral or bold and vibrant so are super versatile. Our handcrafted copper and iron pieces were born from a need for beautiful, practical storage with an industrial twist. I believe Display dried flowers and grasses in a statement vase the natural and industrial textures in our What can we find at Little Deer? collections complement each other well. Be creative with storage from copper pipe, iron and wood. Our dried – it certainly doesn’t have to be boring! pampas grasses and copper clothing rails have been firm favourites recently!
