Think positive. That’s what I’ve been telling myself and that is also what I want to convey, now that the pandemic situation seems to be a bit under control. It has been gratifying to see things improve around us, with the combined effort of so many people. Genuinely grateful to every single person who chipped in! Things seem to be improving so why not lift up our spirits and get our homes the care and attention that they deserve, especially as we still try to stay safe inside our homes. With that thought in mind, we have turned our eye towards adding more beauty and comfort to the space that is truly just for us: the bedroom. Bedrooms are ideally the spaces in our homes that offer us healing relaxation after grueling work days and therefore they should be at the top of all our design priority lists. And that’s why we have put together a wide array of master bedrooms designs from architects and designers that are sure to spark that spirit of aesthetic change in you. And keeping in line with the demands of the time, we have also put together a selection of cane furniture options that are environmentally friendly and aesthetically charming. We hope that with these options, and the homes that we have featured, you are able to ive your home a refreshing new look full of ty and charm.

INBOX LETTER OF THE MOnTH Positivity from TIHG is one of the things that helped me in these difficult times. The aesthetic and functional vision for a beautiful home has made me think of the changes that I would want to integrate into my interiors as well. The green decor options particular engaged me as it had just the vibrancy that I have been looking for. And they offered me a way to add a new energy to my existing space. samaira sood, pune We have just moved into a new city and with it deciding the new look for our home has been one of our main tasks. With all the designed homes that TIHG has featured in their magazine, as well as on Instagram, me and my husband have gradually laded on a look that works for the likes and needs of the both of us. Thank you team TIHG for giving us varied options that helped guide us through the entire process, while also giving us delicious recipes to try out. pratiksha singh, chennai The homes featured by TIHG are so dreamy that I have been unable to resist securing a copy of TIHG since my first in 2019. I have seen how with each issue the team has put forth an incredible variety. I particularly like the sections on gardening as that is one of my hobbies. It has assisted me in the past to correct some of the mistakesthat i have been making. Please feature more such piece. sarah nair, hyderabad The magazine has been a constant for me over the years, as its aesthetics and style have suited me well. I love the featured pieces that offer insights from designers specifically. The expert advice provided has been something that sheds light on things that I had not thought about before. Please feature more pieces on colour combination that work well with each other as they inform interior redesign beautifully. bhawna Talpade, delhi I have been an avid TIHG reader since I am a frequently taking flights and The magazine has served as a companion. I love the interior ideas in it, but the food sections are my absolute favourites. Please share more of those in the future, along with more sustainable decor options. deepanita gogoi, lucknow

MAGAZINE THE POWER OF READERSHIP MAGAZINES! up by 0.9 crores - IRS Q1 2019 AS THE SUPERHERO All media is growing, and Print continues to grow despite the general belief that Print is declining. Readership is largely influenced by two things - literacy level and your disposable income. If you have money, then only will you buy a newspaper. Luckily in India, both those things have moved upwards. Ashish Bhasin, CEO - Greater South and Chairman & CEO - India, Dentsu Aegis Network and Chairman, MRUC I am very happy that Print is growing across all languages, and that Print titles in Digital are doing well too. The Print industry in India is still robust and effective, unlike in the Western world. Shashi Sinha, CEO, IPG Mediabrands, India What is disappointing is the fact that niche publications that serve an important segment have consistently been ignored. A different methodology must be used to ensure correct findings for such publications, but sadly both Neilsen and the MRUC Technical Committee have so far not done this.” Hormusji Cama, CEO, Mumbai Samachar I am happy to see that Print numbers are growing because it also proves the point that everything is not wrong with Print, and Digital is not the only way to go forward. It justifies the argument that Print has an established sort of acceptance. Indranil Roy, CEO, Outlook Group
PRINT IS GROWING No. of additional readers added since IRS 2017 Dailies - 1.8 crores Magazines - 0.9 crores Total number of Print Readers - 42.5 crores

JUNE A time to take a breath and add that splash of positive vigour into all aspects of your home.
A Rich ExpREssioN Integrating traditional goodness, Asian Paints’ ‘Sabyasachi III, Heartland’ collection brings us into the aesthetic melody of the Indian heartland. These carefully envisioned wall coverings by Sabyasachi for Nilaya, bring in the calm and warm comfort of long standing culture. The vibrancy of each wall covering conveys a romantic vision, full of vibrant beauty that captures with its hopeful allure. The collection’s aesthetics are conveyed through three themes, Baug, Udeypore and Indienne, all of which are storytelling mediums immersed in traditional Indian arts like Pichwai and Sanganeri tent art. Baug tries to capture the velvety twilight colours of the sky at the time when the sun is sinking and the moon is on the rise, and the Udeypore theme is all about the myth and grandeur of the eternal city. While the Indienne theme captures the spirit of romance, adventure and voyages with superior fabric of the Indian shores that enchanted Europe when introduced by Armenian merchants. (asianpaints.com)

Behind The Design
anupRiya sahu Cheif Designer & Co-founder, Alankaram
Headed by Anupriya Sahu, an architect with Masters from SPA, New Delhi, ALANKARAM started its furniture manufacturing plant in November 2015 in New Delhi in a small setup of 7,500 square feet of floor area. In August 2019, a larger manufacturing unit, spread over 2,00,000 square feet was started at Pithampur Industrial Area, near Indore. For a solid wood furniture unit, this is one of the largest facilities in the country. The factory is equipped with state-of-the-art machines and
tools from Germany, Italy, USA, Canada, and Taiwan, automated seasoning plant, chemical treatment plant for anti-borer treatment and spray & baking booths. Alankaram makes furniture in Indian (e.g. Teak wood) as well as imported wood (e.g. White oak). With the use of treated and seasoned wood, the furniture offers longer life. The brand has 1600+ SKUs based on 600+ unique designs. This is one of the largest portfolios of wooden and metal furniture in the country.
ALANKARAM IS ALL ABOUT... solid wood furniture. We specialize in handmade solid wood furniture items with a touch of ‘Indian-ness’ to our collection. Our designs are inspired by our culture yet are modern and contemporary. We specialize in use of different woods and different colors in a single piece of furniture. DESIGN FOR ME IS....enjoyment! It is something that will make the designer as well as the user happy. Design is something that is not imposed upon you, rather it flows naturally and comes from within. THROUGH MY DESIGNS...I like to present geometry, colours, textures, and composition. Balancing all aspects is crucial for me. I DRAW INSPIRATIONS FROM... nature and culture! Most of my designs have some inspiration from our vast culture and nature. Colours and geometry in Indian architecture, fabrics, handicrafts, etc. have always had impact on my work till date whether as an architectural student or as a furniture designer. THE DESIGN ERA THAT FASCINATES ME THE MOST... Danish modern. The minimalistic and functionalistic design of early 20th century fascinates me most. WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ABOUT MY WORK... relentlessness, opportunities, outcome. I love the
uncompromising and unceasing passion to perform better and better every time. My job offers me unending opportunities to make and deliver something new every time; there is no limit to what we can make. And at the end of the day a beautiful and useful product is one that gives me the satisfaction of creating something. THE RANGE INCLUDES... furniture and more furniture! The range of furniture manufactured by Alankaram are designer, custom-made, standalone and built-in solid wood and metal furniture for home, offices, restaurant and hospitality industry for both indoor and outdoor use. We have one of the largest range of designs for wooden furniture in India; with 1700 SKUs. THE CURRENT PROJECTS... we are presently working on a number of residential and office projects. We recently completed Microsoft’s India Development Centre (IDS), Noida and some mega houses in South India. We are also working on small accessories and home décor products which will be launched later this month. DREAM PROJECT...for me a project which offers complete freedom to do what I love is a dream project. I love to work on designs which are not for any project!

Project: Prashant Shah’s Home Location: Vadodara, Gujarat Size: 4500 sqft Principal Architect: Narendra Joshi Firm: K.N. Associates Picture Credit: Tejas Shah Photography Text: Tanvi Thakkar For this residence, designer Narendra Joshi wanted to bring out the intangibles in the form of vivid materials, panoramic vistas, simplicity and spatial grandeur. The entire penthouse spreads over an area of 4500 sq. ft. and has two different levels within. Being the connoisseurs of ethnic accents, Prashant Shah envisioned his new house to be a frolicsome cocoon of art and comfort. The designers came up with the concept of a modern-ethnic house with statement contemporary furniture details enveloped in conventional wall claddings and indigenous materials. The subtle warm palette used throughout the dwelling gives a very welcoming effect resonating the personality of its dwellers.

Project: Rock House Location: Near Ahmedabad Built Area: 1100 sq ft Design Firm: The Grid Architects Principals: Bhadri Suthar and Snehal Suthar Photo Credits: Photographix India The programme tries to balance contrarian traits, with spaces for solitude and congregation, sound and silence. The layout comprises two staggered bays, connected by a small passage. Sequentially, one bay accommodates the entry, the washrooms and the master room; the other is an integrated living/dining/kitchenette volume. This orchestration allows the main spaces to remain open on at least two side, capitalising on the surroundings. The interstitial gaps between the two bays, and indeed, the rest of the plot, are landscaped.

Location: Pali Hill, Bandra, Mumbai Size: 3000 sq ft Design: Sanjyt Syngh Picture Credits: Deepak Aggarwal The location of the building is such that there is a view to the sea from mostly all sides and we wanted to take advantage of the same. The designer took advantage of the natural light and kept the space open on three sides. He tried to maximise the view from every angle possible. Also, to maximise the view and to avoid obstruction, the design team used mechanisms like where the television disappears into the ceiling and when not in use is out of sight. The house is a testament that a space can be dark and yet create the feeling of volume by using the right elements.

Location: Mumbai Area: 1800 sq ft Principal Designer: Ali Baldiwala Firm: Baldiwala Edge Picture Credit: Bakir Baldiwala The Bachelor Pad is a New York-style loft - a rigid construction turned into a spatial milieu of hedonism. The extravagant two BHK exudes eclectic detail in materials and luxurious textures, with leitmotifs seen through and through. To execute the vision of of an inviting and mature space with a touch of history, a lot of the original century-old SoBo structure was retained. Recovered teakwood joists along with recreated ones highlight the ceiling with cove lighting, columns stand reformed in concrete with a stainless steel base. Blue Bisazza tile panelled flooring from the master bedroom extends into the ceiling of the bathroom, and everything has a sense of harmony and an element of the unexpected.

Location: Banjara Hills, Hyderabad Area: 3,500 sq. ft. approx. Principal Designer: Neeta Kumar Firm: Inhabit Picture Credits: David Dawson The space required a complete redo to make it feel like ‘you own it and want to dwell in it.’ This is a luxurious yet comfortable space, adding character while making it feel cozy and homey at the same time. Just like people’s attitudes, shapes can also determine character traits. A herringbone patterned floor extending to the couch design, highlighter tiles to add that “oomph” factor, beasty bee personalized fabric and wallpaper, gold tinted lighting fixtures, bespoke furniture designs, deep yellow mustard color – all come together to invoke an immediate sense of indulgence and affluence. Everything designed is not to match perfectly but to sit together in harmony.

TexTures: a game changer for inTeriors Fed up of plain old walls? Why not give your interiors a wow factor by texturing your walls. Words: Kanak Nanda
New paint is always fun and transforming, but adding texture to your wall adds a unique character, depth, and style to any space, whether in the bedroom, living room or kitchen, either to a single accent wall or an entire room. Texturing is an ideal way to conceal your existing walls’ blemishes and flaws, after years of wear and tear. It is a great soundproofing solution, by helping soften the noise between the rooms. Texturing is a work of art and below are some ideas and tips for your next wall. Some textures are rough while the others are smooth, but they both add warmth to a space and can be used in different parts of the house. Sponging, one of the easiest techniques, allows you to create a variety of different layered effects via a harmonious blend of different colour tones. You can create spotted, cloudy, limestone, and textural effects that are highly detailed and
dramatic with just a natural sea sponge. Lighter colours work great for all four walls. Drag painting, also known as Strié painting, makes a unique stripe pattern which creates a fabric look like denim, linen and jute. Choose vertical strokes to give an impression of more height. Use horizontal textures across the short length of a room to draw the eye across and increase the length of the space. Troweled plaster finishes and rough wall textures are making a comeback. I love layered plaster walls because they feel like you’re stepping into the old streets of Europe. There are different types of plasters that one can work with: clay, lime, and gypsum. Faux finish techniques like distressing, graining, and layering on a variety of colours add depth and age your walls and create an old world charm. TIHG

All About Cushions! Small changes can make the big difference for any interiors. Neha Jhunjhunwala offers us insightful tips into integrating new charm and aesthetic goodness with carefully considered selections that work for your space. Words: Neha Jhunjhunwala
As we are staying more at home nowadays, let us add some zing and uplift them. And what a better way to do this than adding some cushions and making them look great together. Cushions are to sofas what paint is to walls. Cushions create synergistic magic when they work well together. And though there are no rules per se on how to decorate using cushions, these are some ways you can try to make your seating setup look stunning, cozy, and warm: 1. Play with different textures and patterns: • Your cushions shouldn’t look like you got a good deal
on some wholesale fabrics and you cut it up and made cushions out of it! Our eyes love interesting and different things. And texture is a big way to keep our eyes/brains interested. • Just like all smooth and soft cushions would be boring, decorating with cushions all over would be overstimulating and will be perceived as busy. • A variety of textures when it comes to cushions will add beauty to a room. And the same applies to patternstry and mix small size motifs with large scales, maybe throw in a stripe and add some solids to pull the whole set up together.

2. Use a variety of sizes and shapes: Think of a pillow arrangement on a sofa as a vignette. They work together to tell a tale, to give off a certain decorative vibe. We must never forget while arranging cushions on a sofa to vary their shape and sizes. Having your cushions all of the same size can look very formal and regimented. While combining cushions of different shapes and sizes creates a homely and comforting look. 3. Color usage: One of the quickest and least expensive things in your room can be your pillow. And they are so important when it comes to integrating color, that have a major impact on our mood. Color usage for cushions can be thought of as: • Carrying on the same color palette of the room. • Add a pop of another great or seasonal color to bring a sense of newness to the space. • Make a bold statement and add a bit of tension to a room, almost like a point of interest, of excitement. 4. Arrangement in odd numbers: • There is some magic in decorating in odd numbers. Our eyes and brains love things grouped in odd numbers. Our eyes scan a room at lightning speed looking for odd number groupings. And we’re not even aware of it! Decorating as a trio is a classic and timeless arrangement. One of the big decorating advantages pillows bring to a room is the ability to play around with it and change it without much effort. Cushions can add a note of the season to a room. Even if a pillow doesn’t have a distinct seasonal or holiday pattern, by grouping cushions that have the colors associated with the season we perceive them as being seasonal. So play around with cushions at your home and remember these little tips and I hope they make your cushion decoration easier and more fun TIHG

he owners’ desired a living space that ought to teleport them to a Moroccan style home, having a significant connection with nature. They wanted to have an open yet private space with a completely soothing atmosphere. The architects blurred the boundaries between internal and external spaces, and planned a house in an extroverted manner by bringing in natural light and yet taking care of the weather outside. Our first impression was to create a stunningly beautiful home using the basic form of straight walls and large openings with flat slabs, edges curved (creating the language of a Moorish design). The orientation of the house and its strategic positioning of elements such as the courts and open spaces bring in ample amount of daylight, while at the same time avoiding direct heat gain. Volumes are played with to create multiple leisure spaces with a landscaped terrace accessible from the first floor. The architectural vocabulary of this home was envisaged representing Mediterranean elements.

Approaching and understanding what the site has to offer us, we started to design the external spaces – open and green and slowly venturing into the interior areas. A simple plan was developed capturing the essence of viewpoints. The ground level houses the common areas, with first and the second floor consisting of bedrooms with play within the levels, creating a profuse expanse on the interior. The design theme of this home is a complete mix of natural elements, vibrant colours and highly adorned furniture and accessories. The house experiences a magical dance of shadows through the wooden pergolas, slits on the frontal elevation and huge fenestrations on all the rooms. The living room opens up to the external courtyard spaces which inturn adds a voluminous formal breakfast space overlooking the pooja court, that is directly accessible from the entry foyer. The staircase as an element separates the formal living room from the dining area, serving as the focal point of the home. The idea of having a Moroccan home is majorly achieved through the imposition of hand-plastered walls, arches, geometric designs and impressive stone works. Kudos to the local artisans for this intricate crafty construction. Choosing an earthy colour palette reflecting the desert hues for the shell was imperative for the architects. Beige and sand colour textures along with creatively crafted tiles complement the surroundings. Lighting of the entire home was accentuated with lamps and pendants of geometric shapes made of stained glass with a tinge of wood. Hanging

The Home: The Floating Frame House Location: Ahmedabad, India Area: 3500 sqft Firm Name: RSA + Tattva Lead Architects: Rushi Shah and Vidisha Shah Landscape Architect: Tattva Landscapes Structural Engineer: Bhoomi Consultants Located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city, amidst the dense green rural area, the home belongs to a structural engineer, landscape architect, and an architect. The concept was to design a home that could delight the view of both - an undivided garden and sky from major parts of the house. The key aspect of the design process was to have a material palate of exposed brick, exposed concrete, exposed steel structure, and lots of creepers and plants covering the home structure. The rustic brick screen covering dense bamboo clusters creates a welcoming gesture with a
glimpse of the farm house. It leads to a small carved xerophytic plant-island, which embroiders the foreground. The verandah functions as a threshold to the built form which sprawls to a living area with a brick wall backdrop facing the east sunlight. The semi-private zone with living area, dining space and kitchen is aligned in one axis. These spaces are 12 ft high, which provides the vast view of the garden along with creepers drooping from the steel canopy through full-height glass shutters. private areas which comprises of all bedrooms designed with private courts that allow morning as well as evening sunlight through retained trees. The master bedroom opens up with a view of the garden in the east and a court in the west direction. The bedroom with filtered sunlight is the perfect location for morning and evening teas and reads. The shower court with banana plants and monsteras creates a tropical aura. The cantilevered slab and a steel canopy cuts off harsh summer light and allow the penetration in winters, which also acts as a climbing element for creepers. The central verandah space is a floating platform surrounded by a lotus pond, which is connected by a wooden bridge from the dining area. Here, the family spends most of the time overlooking the soothing flora and fauna. TIHG
