AN A-TO-Z LOOK AT WHAT’S IN THE MAY ISSUE, AMONG OTHER SEASONAL NEWS AND NOTES
Did You Know?
A Welcome from the Editor Every year, usually in late fall, my dad thumbs through his Colorblends catalog and orders an assortment of bulbs— hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips—that he and my Rachel Hardage Barrett E D ITO R - I N - C H I E F children will plant during @ R AC H E L H A R DAG E B A R R E T T a future visit from Papa. Watching my son and daughter dig in the dirt with my dad is one of those moments I wish I could bottle and revisit in the future when I crave the curious innocence of these elementary school days (“look, Mama, a worm!”) or the reassuring calm of my dad’s drawl as he patiently teaches two budding gardeners how to maneuver a long-handled bulb planter. But even though I can’t bottle it, I do get to revisit it, whenever the first of those blooms peeks out of the soil and my son runs breathlessly through the back door to alert me that “our daffydills are here!” I smile and nod, partly thankful for the flowers—they are pretty—but mostly because I know my dad has cultivated a joy that will last well beyond the blooms. I hope this issue inspires you to enjoy spring with the same wide-eyed wonder.

You Know You’re in the Country...
If squirrels are helping themselves to your birdseed, you may want to reconsider Dr. Tricia Earley the placement of your C L’ S CO U N T RY V E T feeders. Squirrels are great jumpers but can’t really leap much higher than four feet off the ground or seven feet from another tree. Baffles—smooth sheets of plastic or metal wrapped around tree trunks—will help prevent persistent squirrels from reaching feeders placed higher up in branches. If your backyard visitors are particularly determined, you can also try a squirrel-proof bird feeder, like a weight-activated model, which protects seed from heavier critters while allowing feathered friends to nibble freely.

Because of the salty ocean air, both cedar shakes and shingles fade from a light-colored wood to the silver-hued siding associated with seaside homes in New England. Wooden shakes are traditionally hand-split, which gives them a rougher texture and makes them less uniform (read: “more character”). Shingles are smooth and uniform, making them easier and more affordable to install.

Solitary Bees While honey bees operate as part of a colony, solitary bees fly solo. Because they’re not protecting a queen, solitary bees aren’t aggressive and don’t sting, making them ideal for gardens frequented by kids or pets. They’re also excellent pollinators. Bring Mason and Leafcutter solitary bees to your own backyard via Rent Mason Bees, which mails bee cocoons and nesting blocks to subscribers. At the end of the season, send back the nesting block, now filled with eggs (no need to worry with cleaning it), and the new bees will be used to help pollinate orchards across the U.S.
So, You Wanna Be a Beekeeper Backyard beekeeping has never been buzzier. If you’re considering joining the swarm, start with this advice from two expert apiarists.
First, Study Up. “The best beekeepers understand how a colony behaves, so read as much as you can before you begin,” says Girl Next Door Honey’s Hilary Kearney. Jay Williams of Williams Honey Farm LLC suggests taking a local class, too. “The advice will be specific to your area, and you’ll have a mentor nearby if questions come up.”
Kits from $40; rentmasonbees.com
WORLD BEE DAY is May 20. Visit worldbeeday.org for tips on beefriendly living.
Then Get the Local Buzz. “The best bees are native to your area because they know the local flora,” says Jay. “Your state’s beekeeping association can point you to local clubs, where bees can be purchased. Start with two colonies, which have about 10,000 bees each.”
Buy a Smoker... “You’ll also need a bee suit and a hive tool, which can be ordered from websites like Mann Lake or Betterbee,” says Hilary. As for hives, “There’s no ‘best’ type, but Langstroth hives are the most common.”
Hilary Kearny (@girlnext doorhoney), author of bee book QueenSpotting, tends her hives in San Diego, CA.
...and Tend Your Hives. “Expect to spend an hour or two per week during the active seasons of spring and summer,” says Jay.

Before you Go

At the Shelter
Back at home
Dogs are social animals and need daily attention, so make sure you’re truly ready to provide enough play, walk, and snuggle time. Ensure you have the financial resources to take care of your dog’s needs and a means of providing healthcare for the unexpected, such as pet health insurance or a pet savings account. Establish expectations with your family members by agreeing on who is responsible for daily food and water, walking, poop scooping, etc.
Keep an open mind but be realistic. If you have a small apartment, you may not want a young, energetic dog. If you live an active lifestyle and want a running buddy, maybe an elderly basset hound is not for you (though sometimes one look from a sweet animal in need can send preconceived ideas out the window!). If you already have a dog at home, consider arranging a visit to see how the dogs interact. Sometimes your dog can help pick your new pooch for you.
Be patient. Remember, your home is a foreign land to your new dog and is likely a little scary. It takes most dogs three to four weeks to adjust. Be understanding if your pet is distant, wants to hide, or has accidents. A kind voice, lots of petting and belly rubs, and avoidance of harsh corrections will go a long way in establishing trust. If you have existing pets in the household, introduce them slowly and on a leash, praising both dogs when they interact calmly.

Update any open-frame headboard (here, “Alresford” by Joss & Main, $390; wayfair .com) by cutting pieces of cane webbing just larger than the openings you wish to embellish, then attach to the back with a staple gun. Caning can be found at caneandbasket.com.
Cut a piece of caning to the height and circumference of a drum-shaped lamp shade. Spray the back of the caning with adhesive spray, such as Super 77; attach to shade. Cut two pieces of flat reed to the diameter of the shade; paint desired color. Once dry, attach with hot-glue.

Bookshelf Trim a piece of caning just larger than the opening on the shelf (Brightmaison’s floating bookshelf; amazon.com). Use a foam brush to spread glue (we used Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue) to the back of the shelf opening. Attach caning, holding it in place with binder clips while it dries. Once dry, remove clips and hang shelf.
№4
Clock Paint a nine-inch wood round ($7; amazon.com) desired color. Cut a piece of caning just larger than the round. Spray back with adhesive spray, such as Super 77, then attach to wood, pressing to adhere. Trim excess. Drill a hole in center, and attach clock motor and hands (clockparts.com).
Cut a 3 1/2-inch-tall strip of caning slightly longer than the circumference of a wood round. Hot-glue the bottom edge of the strip around the outside edge of the wood to create the sides of the basket. Thread twine through caning (three or four lengths, evenly spaced), and attach with hot-glue, leaving plenty of length to thread through a second basket, if desired. Hot-glue lengths of flat reed around the top and bottom of the basket. Tie twine together at the top to hang.

Spread a 1/4-inch line of craft glue on the three edges of the notebook that are being covered (not gluing the fourth side creates a pocket). Attach caning, press to adhere, and let dry.

Insert a piece of caning that is the same size as the opening of a picture frame (here, a 16-by-20inch frame by BarnwoodUSA, $45; amazon.com). Hold in place with craft glue or glazing points. Attach three-inch cabinetstyle handles (wrapped with twine, if desired) to the short ends of the frame. Insert a piece of glass that covers the full opening, if desired.
FIELD NOTES
What Is Caning, Exactly? You’re likely familiar with this material courtesy of vintage caned furniture, which was at the height of popularity during the Victorian era and was often found in Colonial interiors. However, the material predates that era by thousands of years, when it was first used to make baskets. Cane, in general, refers to the material made from the outer bark of the rattan vine, which grows in Southwest Asia. The vine ranges in diameter from 1 to 2 inches and can reach up to 600 feet long! Once harvested, the bark is separated from the core and processed into thin strands, then woven on a large loom into a sheet-like material with different patterns. The classic hole pattern (used in these projects) is the most common; the openings on the hole pattern can range from ⅜ inch to 1 inch. Other popular styles include a herringbone weave, radio weave, and open box weave.

Votive Holder
Stamped Napkin
Napkin Rings
Measure the height and circumference of a glass votive holder. Cut caning to fit around the holder. Spray the back with adhesive spray, such as Super 77; attach to the glass. Cut pieces of flat reed the diameter of the holder, and attach to the top and bottom edges with hot-glue.
Create a stamp by cutting out a four-inch square of caning. Brush fabric paint on the front side of the caning, and press caning on an off-white linen napkin. Repeat, lining up the pattern as best you can, until one side of a napkin is fully covered.
Cut out a piece of caning that is 8 inches long by 2 1/2 inches tall. Use hot-glue to adhere the ends together, creating a ring. If desired, remove some of the cross canes to create a loose edge.

Meet a Magpie
Retro Rainbow Collector and Etsy seller Emily Tieman (@emily.retro) fills her Michigan home with a colorful assortment of collectibles.
THE MAGPIE
Emily Tieman Holland, MI BRIGHT BEGINNINGS: My town of Holland began as a Dutch settlement. My Oma and Opa (grandma and grandpa) moved here from the Netherlands, and their house was filled with charming Dutch knickknacks. I’ve been trying to re-create that look ever since.
I have more than 100 antique tins, and I like to display them alongside colorful midcentury ephemera, like cards from old board games or vintage stationery. I find the rainbow arrangement helps it all look cohesive. I’m also drawn to the retro illustrations of Little Golden Books and Betty Crocker cookbooks. I’m a fan of vintage vibes, not vintage values.
PERFECT TIN:
If there’s one through line to the items I collect, it’s floral details. I have a black thumb, so it’s a way to fill my house with flowers without having to take care of them.

W. Atlee Burpee’s Annual Catalogs Variations of the company’s 1890s slogan “Burpee’s Seeds Grow” often appear on catalogs.
In 1876, fueled by his passion for science, 18-year-old Washington Atlee Burpee started a mail-order livestock company in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, that is still known 145 years later as W. Atlee Burpee & Co. His focus quickly transitioned from breeding animals to developing quality seed varieties. By the turn of the century, his beautifully illustrated catalog (then called “Burpee’s Farm Annual”) had become a revered resource for the agriculture community. In the early 1900s, black-and-white photography began to fill the pages, followed by color images by 1950. Today, more than three million catalogs are still mailed out annually, with flowers now accounting for half of sales. WHAT TO KNOW:

Painted Dining Table did you know... Chinoiserie, such as the “Blue Willow” tableware pattern depicted here, is the European—and later American—depiction of Chinese motifs and qualities. It rose to popularity in the early 18th century, and that popularity is resurging today.

“What a charming early- to mid-1900s handpainted folk art table,” says appraiser Marsha Dixey of Heritage Auctions. “You mention that your grandmother referred to this as her Peter Hunt table. At first glance, it did not look like a Peter Hunt, but upon closer inspection, it could be.” Born Frederick Schnitzer in 1896 to a poor German immigrant family, the self-taught Hunt became recognized as

He later employed other artists to paint pieces in his style and even published a how-to book for updating and painting furniture. “Unfortunately, without a signature, which most of his pieces had, the most I can say is that your table is in the Peter Hunt style,” says Marsha. George Pottery, and sold until the company went bankrupt in 1955,” says appraiser Marsha Dixey. “There were two variations of ‘Shortcake’: a red-band border like yours and a green-and-red-band border.” She adds that sets of these dishes (including cups, saucers, and luncheon plates) were originally sold through the Sears catalog for $5.69.

Appraiser Bene Raia of Raia Auctioneers tells us your set of painted lead horses appears to be part of the horse racing game “Escalado,” manufactured by Chad Valley. “They were one of the U.K.’s leading toy manufacturers for most of the 20th century,” says Bene. “Your pieces would make their way across a long fabric racetrack by means of a mechanical hand crank to simulate the events of a live race.”
“While possibly made by Wakefield Rattan Company, it is often difficult to determine the specific maker of wicker furniture when there is no label,” says appraiser Helaine Fendelman. “During the time your early 1900s wicker chair was made, there were manufacturers in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, and many other states, all with different names and sometimes even different catalogue offerings.” She adds that your armchair has been repainted a number of times, helping to preserve the piece.

Teatime A ceremony steeped in history serves up a satisfying assortment of vintage collectibles.
Tea Strainers While the first strainers were bamboo, porcelain and sterling silver rose to popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries as teatime became a treasured part of the day. Ceramic strainers go for $25 to $50, and silver-plated or mesh options are fairly affordable. Sterling silver versions range from $150 to $650 and beyond. Strainers were once key to brewing an individual cup, until the rise of tea bags in the 1900s. (Legend has it Thomas Sullivan sent customers tea packaged in silk bags, and they thought he intended for them to use the bags for steeping!)

These sweet accessories were common advertising tools used by hotels, restaurants, and bars in the 1950s and ’60s. The custom wrappers often sported hotel names or manufacturer logos, but some were simply decorated with floral designs or other patterns that wouldn’t detract from the teatime tablescapes. While these are rarer finds, many are on resale sites for 50 cents to $5 apiece.

American makers like Homer Laughlin reinvented the teapot shape in the 1950s.
Most English—and, later, American—porcelain companies created teapot and cup-and-saucer sets to maintain their statuses among the tea-drinking elite. Today, some of these precious pots can be worth close to $1,000 apiece. Makers like Royal Winton (1, 2) favored sweet floral accents and vibrant colors, while other makers like Crown Ducal (3, 4) went for full-bloom chintz patterns. The iconic English transferware style was utilized by makers like Mason’s (5), which can go for upwards of $350, while other English brands like Sadler (6) embraced more subdued floral designs. Irish maker Belleek Pottery added a shamrock basket weave design to the mix beginning in the 1880s (7). Matching cup-and-saucer sets, while still highly valued, offer a smaller collectible option.

2001 This Chippendale mahogany piecrust tea table sells for $1,436,000 at Christie’s. Antique tea furniture like tables, trolleys, and chests from the 1700s and 1800s are highly valuable.
2010s-Present Pop culture—think Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, and Ted Lasso—casts a new spotlight on teatime, causing American at-home tea consumption to increase through 2020 and loose-leaf tea prices to spike.

FIELD NOTES
A Short History of the Humble Rocking Chair Benjamin Franklin is often credited with inventing this beloved staple of porches near and far, but historians trace them to the early 18th century, when clever furniture craftsmen who recognized the appeal of a cradle’s rocking motion began adding wooden runners to ladder-back chairs. Noted craftsmen (Thonet, Maloof) soon popularized various styles, but J.F.K. sparked interest in a woven-seat-and-back, Carolina-style rocker, thanks to advice from a doctor. He was such a convert that he even had one placed on Air Force One.

Recently, they applied that filter to their home’s bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room, focusing on favorite colors, regional nods (to satisfy Marcus’s longing for a life in New England), nostalgic furniture pieces that have followed them from home to home, and an assemblage of collected and passed-down knickknacks that bring a smile with every look. The end result feels both highly livable and lived. “It’s nice to see those old things bring soul into our rooms,” says Marcus.

BEFORE
The Bedroom With only surface changes needed, the Fords focused on creating a quiet retreat that checked the boxes of both form and function. Pick a Restful Palette. “What is a room for us without something blue?” says Victoria of the couple’s go-to color. To create a calming surround, she chose a light blue for the walls, then took a tone-on-tone approach with darker blues on a patchwork quilt (Country Living collection; hsn.com) and a Kazak-style rug (rugs.com). A woven window shade (smithandnoble.com) balances it all.
Rethink the Nightstand. In lieu of bedside tables, the couple prioritized WFH convenience with a multipurpose desk topped with a striped lamp (llbean.com). It’s paired with a comfy barrel chair found years ago at a flea market. “It’s been at least five or six colors by now, but the yellow upholstery never changes,” says Victoria. A ladder-back chair flanks the other side of the new iron bed.
Keep It Personal. Above the bed, a gallery wall designed through Framebridge (framebridge.com) shows off a repro set of the Society for Visual Education’s ca.-1970 “Black ABCs” flash cards. “They have these really beautiful definitions and photographs that feel so spot-on for African American culture,” says Victoria. Elsewhere, souvenir pennants, vintage tennis racquets, and an old state fair sign make reference to meaningful places and pastimes.

A pillow-top mattress from CL’s Welcome Home collection (countryliving .com/welcome home) ensures the bed sleeps as good as it looks.
A flag with U.S. Navy Captain James Lawrence’s famous order and one of Marcus’s wooden African American sea captains continue the nautical note.

The Bathroom After a little reconfiguring— and a lot of blue—the bath is barely recognizable. Meet in the Middle. The original vanity was awkwardly off-center. Now, a dapper pair of his-and-hers wood vanities (signaturehard ware.com) fits snuggly, and symmetrically, in the space. Ribbed hardware (nostalgicware house.com) gives the bath a dressed-up feel that Victoria loves, reinforced by a trio of smart brass sconces (hudson valleylighting.com).
Play with Scale. Sixty-inch-tall blue beadboard wainscoting adds height to the space along with texture. On the floor, a hexagon tile flower motif (fireclaytile.com) hits a nostalgic note while feeling decidedly fresh in a larger-than-typical execution. (Each tile is four inches.)
Mix the Finishes. “Brass finishes are usually my preference, but for this space, we wanted to mix it up,” says Victoria. Shiny chrome on the faucets and fixtures (signature hardware.com) paired with brass-framed mirrors and sconces helps the room feel more evolved over time than “out of the box.”

The shower’s handmade subway tiles (fireclaytile .com) are an almost perfect match to the beadboard. “I wanted everything to feel wrapped in this blue,” says Victoria.

The Laundry Room With only closet-size digs downstairs, Marcus and Victoria carved out a new work space on the second floor.
Reclaim a Corner.

Part of an unused room and an extra hall closet combined to make a just-right laundry room. A new sleek and space-saving laundry tower (lowes.com) is front and center, flanked by a built-in cabinet equipped with folding space and a petite work sink (below).
Add Whimsy with Wallpaper. As a fan of both stripes and the color navy, Victoria knew this fun wallpaper featuring a striped shirt motif (sarafitz.com) was an instant “add to cart.” The sartorial note, of course, is also quite fitting, given the space.
Pile on the Pattern. A large-scale checkerboard tile floor (fireclaytile.com) laid on the diagonal draws eyes to the window and pairs well with the wallcovering. Victoria tied it all together with a navy-bordered Roman shade (smithandnoble.com) and high-gloss navy paint on the millwork.
A favorite print by artist Elizabeth Mayville (emayville .com) hangs above a sink from an architectural salvage store. “This little sink looks exactly like the one I had growing up,” says Victoria.

Champion the old.
ou might say Phoebe Cole-Smith was born to own her Martha’s Vineyard cottage. She did, after all, first visit the island when she was two weeks old. “My grandparents lived in Ohio but owned houses in Martha’s Vineyard that have been passed down for 75 years. It was a way to curb my grandmother’s homesickness for her native Boston,” says Phoebe, a farmer-chef and founder of Dirt Road Farm (dirtroadfarm .com). She and her children, Walker and Sophie Cole, shared countless summer days at the family home in the island’s village of Edgartown. In 2014, Phoebe, her children (now grown), and her husband, Mike Smith, decided they were ready to dip their toes into purchasing something of their own on the beloved island. “We settled on Chappaquiddick because it’s a bit wild and remote. It’s also only a short ferry ride into Edgartown, which totally appeased Sophie and Walker,” she says. As luck would have it, they found not one but three cottages on “Chappy,” as the locals call it. The trio of tiny 1930s structures had previously been guest cottages for a much larger home and were sold as a single unit. “With grown children and lots of guests coming and going, it’s just right,” says Phoebe. Careful not to undo the historic charm, she took a light touch to the cottages, filling them with a pieced-together collection of furniture and artwork, much of it straight from her family’s Martha’s Vineyard home. “My grandparents and mother had a very artful way of making simple items look beautiful,” she says. Yet another family tradition that’s going strong.
Rather than rip out the original humble materials, such as the exposed-lathe walls or beadboard ceilings, Phoebe kept the original bones of the houses blessedly intact. She patched rotted spots as needed and spiffed up the surfaces with fresh coats of paint. (The interiors were previously a dark stained wood.) On the porch, for example, the floors were lightly sanded and waxed, the siding brightened up with white, the ceiling painted a cheery shade of aqua, and the shutters elevated with a stately blue. “It’s all the same here,” says Phoebe. “Same doors, same floors, same old screens— same everything. I just revived it.”
Make the porch multitask. “The Anchor” cottage’s hardworking screened-in porch serves various functions throughout the course of a day. It’s part dining room, part game room, and part cocktail lounge, thanks to (continued on pg. 60)

lightweight furniture that can easily be reconfigured. “It doesn’t hurt that it also has the best views. People naturally want to gather here,” adds Phoebe.
Give dogs free rein. If it can withstand wily pups, then it can also handle drippy bathing suits and sandy feet. That was Phoebe’s philosophy as she chose textiles for the cottages, where her dogs Glen, a rescue, and Dixie, a Jack Russell terrier, are inevitably the life of the party. Furnishings, including the vintage rattan sofa from Phoebe’s grandparents’ house on Martha’s Vineyard, are upholstered in durable Sunbrella and hemp linen fabrics. Meanwhile, most floors feature inexpensive rush rugs: a seagrass floor covering pieced together via one-foot interwoven squares. (For similar, try shoprushhouse.com.) (continued on pg. 63)

THAT G E T AWA Y FEELI NG Swing open the windows. Every vacation house needs a “we’ve arrived” ritual. “We open the windows to let those sea breezes in, then run to the beach with the dogs and jump in the water,” says Phoebe.
Play a seaside soundtrack. “Anything goes,” says Phoebe, although she’s partial to Chet Baker, James Taylor, and the Four Tops.
Mix up a house cocktail. Phoebe’s go-to is a gin and tonic, with some tweaks: locally crafted Barr Hill gin (caledoniaspirits.com), equal parts Saratoga Springs mineral water and Fever-Tree tonic (fever-tree.com), a slice of cucumber, and a sprig of in-season fresh herbs (cilantro, mint, or lemon verbena).
Layer in the familiar. “Most of the furniture here was inherited one way or another,” says Phoebe of the motley crew of pieces throughout. That mismatch solidifies the quaint aesthetic and connects her to childhood memories. In the kitchen, her grandparents’ antique table serves as a quirky work space. (The tuckunder seat brings to mind bygone days of “swinging” from it.) “Even though this isn’t the house I grew up with, it all feels very familiar.”
Take in the local flavor. “We are breakfast regulars at Dock Street Coffee Shop in Edgartown and are always happy to wait our turn for a swivel stool at the counter,” says Phoebe. For dinner, the upbeat Port Hunter (theport hunter.com) emphasizes farm- and sea-to-table dishes.
Pick a palette with patina. DECOR An assortment of totes and hats adds texture to the wall when not beach-bound.
While the house doesn’t feel capital-D “Decorated” or overtly beach-house themed, it does feel casually cohesive, thanks largely to a just-loose-enough, weathered(continued on pg. 64)

Lend some personality to the guest rooms. “You’ll be in the yellow room” sounds so much more cheerful than “down the hall, second door to the left,” don’t you think? What’s uniform, though: easy-to-clean and interchangeable white bed linens and durable hooked wool and cotton rag rugs. Baskets and compact chests of drawers give company a place to stash a weekend wardrobe. “I’d rather guests feel at home than shown-off for,” says Phoebe.

“This shrub grows like a floribunda, with the most perfect blooms, but it can be susceptible to disease in moist climates.”
“White roses are very delicate, but this one is hardy and makes for a great cut rose that opens huge and full.”
Meet a Flower Farmer When Gracie Poulson and her husband, Ryan, purchased their first home in Santa Ynez, California, in 2016, they grew a rose garden in honor of Gracie’s grandmother and namesake. After the couple shared photos of more than 500 rose bushes online, requests started pouring in from floral designers near and far, and the couple soon began shipping roses across the country. Thus, Grace Rose Farm (gracerosefarm.com) was born. While it hasn’t been all rosy—“Mother Nature has taught us to roll with the punches, whether wildfires or drought,” says Gracie—she remains an enthusiastic petal pusher. “There’s this idea that roses are fussy to grow, so people get scared off. They do require trimming and feeding, but they give back so much more beauty than the effort required to grow them.”
The Story of the Peggy Martin Rose Southerners may be familiar with this hardy climbing rose named after a Louisiana gardener whose home was submerged in 20 feet of water during Hurricane Katrina. Only two plants survived: a Crinum and a then-unnamed semithornless rose. Texas A&M professor Dr. Bill Welch went on to name the rose, which is now considered a symbol of resiliency. petalsfromthepast.com

The Outdoorsy Type In a Southern California cottage, a designer blurs the line between inside and out with a home that’s as fresh, airy, and relaxed as its surroundings.

Rewired with jute-covered cord (worldmarket.com for similar), this vintage pendant fixture hangs directly from a junction box, but the swag rope makes it look like it’s nonchalantly tossed around the beams.
Bifold Windows, Pulledfrom-the-Garden Hues To give the small cottage a large, airy feel, Raili looked up, knowing potentially charming trusses were hiding in the attic. After some engineering muscle to remove the drop ceiling and reinforce the vaulted
ceiling, Raili brightened up the dark wood with white paint (Pure White by Sherwin-Williams). She then introduced more cabin-conjuring moments like pine-plank walls and cabinets in a color reminiscent of vintage Coleman lanterns. Meanwhile, a couple of wood chairs left as trash in an alleyway put her on the hunt for more mismatched pairs, all which she gave a uniform look with a very California appropriate hue: Avocado by Sherwin-Williams.

Black Adler Sherwin-Williams
In a nod to cottage exteriors, architect Eric Olsen (ericolsendesign.com) suggested replacing old stucco with horizontal cedar shiplap. “We took it to the next level by staining it dark,” says Raili. Out back, Raili re-created the dreamy ambience of alfresco meals in the middle of a grassy field.
I
t seems like a lifetime ago (24 years, in fact) since Raili Clasen
purchased her first home: a charming white cottage in Costa Mesa, California. The 1950s property hardly tipped the scales at 1,100 square feet, though, so she and her growing family soon split for larger digs. However, because they continued to rent out the cottage, it was more of an open-ended “see you later” than a hard-and-fast goodbye. So when Raili, who spent 16 years in the surf-fashion industry before transitioning into design (railicadesign .com), and her husband, Ryan, who works for shoe brand Vans, decided to downsize, they set their sights on returning to and reimagining the sentimental starter home. “I have always loved this house,” says Raili. “Even when I was so removed from it, I still had a six-inch-thick file of ideas.” She dusted off that dog-eared notebook and married her chic surfer aesthetic with a kick of summer camp. In addition to preserving the home’s footprint (plus a little bump to accommodate another bedroom), they prioritized outdoor living spaces that, through a sequence of bifold doors and windows, feel like extensions of the interiors. The mix of the familiar and alfresco makes for one happy homecoming.

Open and Airy Layout, Lush Houseplants During the renovation, Raili chose to axe the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room from the living room. To help the three zones feel like one cohesive communal space, she extended the new “Scandi cabin” vertical pine planks from floor to ceiling, even trimming the windows and mantel in the unstained pine, for a warm, finished look. To keep the living room as relaxed as the outdoor spaces, she opted for a wood-framed sofa in a nubby, beat-up linen. Then, to get the most impact from only a few pieces, she added a graphic Anthony Burrill print and a geometric rug (the-citizenry.com).

A Sunny Spot to Soak, Native Flower Motifs Raili’s original plan for the bath called for an all-white space. She began to move the needle a bit on the color scale with plans to paint the claw-foot tub a dark blue, but the fixtures salesperson had ideas of her own. “She said, ‘I ordered you a yellow tub,’ ” recalls Raili, laughing. “I thought about it for a few days. It’s just another example of people knowing me better than I know myself.” So Raili opted for other blue accents, landing on a hand-painted wallpaper (lakeaugust.com) featuring bold illustrations of the native Southern California matilija poppy (aka “the fried egg poppy”).

The bathroom’s pegboard shelving system echoes the bedroom’s plywood wall.
Rustic Textures, Camp Classics In lieu of a traditional headboard in her 18-year-old son Rees’s small room, Raili added warmth and texture with a plywood accent wall that she had lightly buffed, then sealed, for a matte finish. Still, the wall was calling for some color, so Raili raided her stockpile of vintage finds from the Long Beach Flea Market, finally settling on a perfectly weathered vintage Red Cross flag, which she draped above the bed with two pins. A boldly striped “Glacier National Park” pieced quilt and shams (pendleton-usa.com) add another graphic touch.
Ryan, an avid surfer, requested an outdoor shower strategically located off the back gate. It’s outfitted with a rustic bench and a vintage portrait of a boxer, a breed beloved by the family.
