ell, here we are again, right at the deadline bumpstop with the throttle pinned and trying to get everything done at the last second. The printer’s been sending threatening e-mails since this morning, and the chequered flag must drop any second.

In this case the late finish is justified. We have so much awesome material in this issue, and as sometimes happens, some of it wasn’t available until the very last minute. We had to push our luck a little.

The 2022 Garrett Advancing Motion Brisbane Jamboree went off like a G401150 just a couple of days ago, and Jamie Gray has been frantically trying to get the story together. It was such a huge event and there was so much going on it’s taken every available second to try and do the event justice.

While Jamie was pounding the keyboard, the rest of team had a shed load of JBS tools and storage to cover in our first feature story.

Thank goodness for a few solid professionals. Iain Curry would be at the top of that list, and, as always, his Classic Car section had me sitting bolt upright in my chair and hanging on every word and image. It’s not that I’m a huge Citroën aficionado, but how can anyone who lived through the 1970s and loved cars not get excited about a classic like that one in such immaculate condition? And I felt Iain summed up the DS perfectly when he described it as ‘stylish, quirky and beautiful’.

There can’t be any doubt about that.

Of course, Peter Blanshard has done another great job of rounding up industry news and trends in his report from the IAME, we’ve naturally included a package of Focus Features – Kincrome storage

systems, Dual Action multi-purpose impact sockets, Milwaukee Job Site Solutions, the Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse Air Belt Sander and the Metalmaster EWHD-65 English Wheel – a few tech features, a Workshop Profile and a Mechanic Profile. Meanwhile, the regulars had to be done.

It wouldn’t be Australian Car Mechanic without

Solutions,

Products, Eye On The

Finance, and we managed to round up a feature about Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle blasting around Sandown in a Mustang for a very good cause.

So, yeah. We’re a little pushed for time as I write this.

In fact, everything seems to be here. I’m not sure what the hold-up is now.

Oh. I see.

It’s this page.

I’d best get on with it.

Catch up with you all next issue.

BETTER PRACTICES FOR YOUR BUSINESS

The concern that we see at the moment is that a number of state-based consumer protection authorities are reporting an increase in claims from consumers due to incomplete or inferior repairs due to lack of parts. I have just experienced the right way to deal with a customer when you can’t obtain the correct part to do the job.

A family vehicle required a windscreen. It was identified at our friends at O’Brien Glass that this particular model variant had no less than nine options of front glass. The differences were fairly small and one could be tempted to fit a piece of glass that would do the job, but may not do it as good as the genuine component. Being that there was no glass available through aftermarket or genuine suppliers, I was politely told that we must wait until the exact component became available.

It was suggested that this could have been a combination of safety, longevity, fitment or performance of the heads-up

display but, none the less, O’Brien would not compromise on fitting something that was not perfect. They did all of this not knowing who I worked for or my understanding of fit for purpose parts. The attitude was perfect for our industry and perfect for consumer confidence and satisfaction.

Conversely, we have my opening remarks where we are seeing all too often the return of a vehicle due to a component not being fit for purpose and our practitioners reaching for something that would fit into the bracket of yesteryear and the term “she’ll be right”. That saying may have had a place in the ‘70s or ‘80s, but not with the technology that surrounds the motor vehicles of today. We should claim money as a professional, highly trained technician, and we should give advice and service to our customers in the same manner. No longer can we find something that will fit or “should do the job” – we need to be more than precise these days.

In referring to professional advice and companies that have supported your IAME for many years, I wish to again publicly thank our sponsors Atlantic Oil, NATRAD Radiators and Spirit Super. When it comes to advice these companies do excel.

TIME TO EMPLOY NEW APPRENTICES

Being that it is September, our mind should be focused on growing our own new technicians by employing our new group of apprentices. As school leavers start to wind up their year 10 and year 12 years, their minds are focusing on obtaining employment, possibly prior to Christmas, and getting prepared to embark on their training early next year. By the time a lot of host employers get around to finding new staff in late January, after the holiday period, most of the super keen apprentices have already been employed. Trying to find apprentices today is a real task and I would advise most host employers to consider this job the property of companies such as ‘Apprenticeships Are Us’ and wrapping this payment up by your Capricorn account. It is not an easy task to vet a young person who does not really have much of a work history to go on. There are certainly ways that companies such as Apprenticeships Are Us have to identify the right type of candidate for your job needs, but we must get in quick.

The use of your Capricorn account can always be made with companies such as 'Apprenticeships Are Us' to help gather points, have all your apprentice’s employment billed in an orderly fashion and ensure that provisions that are often missed on an apprentice are well covered.

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE HYBRID CAR HERA

There has been some wonderful advancements in our lithium battery technology and there is now a product that is on the market which has been advertised as an excellent product to assist in extinguishing a lithium battery fire, if you were ever to experience one. As we used to have spill kits and first aid kits, our workshops of today should be equipped with defibrillators and products to assist in extinguishing fires. Along these lines it has also been brought to our attention that modifications to plug-in hybrids and EVs for performance enhancements is becoming more prevalent. This is a practice that

should not be engaged in as some of our first responders and service technicians are just getting their heads around safe working practices without introducing the added risks of amplifying voltages in these types of vehicles. Not enough is known about the impacts of lifting voltage from 600 (thereabouts) to 1,000.

BE COMPLIANT

Although in most of the articles that I have written in the past I have spoken about compliance, yet the IAME still has members asking what they should do in business to be compliant. As most of you would know, it is not a singular answer. We have to be aware of signage, police/parts books, insurances, signed job cards, accurate quoting practices, the list goes on…

The IAME’s Business Services Division covers these subjects in a monthly mentoring session which is held one-onone with you or your management team.

Please contact inbox@iame.com.au for more information on this comprehensive service that your IAME offers.

COOLANT LEAKS IN FORD PX RANGER

Original units have been known to leak coolant either externally (from around the flanged joints on either side of the cooler) or internally, whereby coolant leaks into the engines intake system – pulled along by the recirculated exhaust gasses. Both of these failures are cause for EGR cooler replacement.

Goss has re-engineered the PX Ranger cooler and developed a new manufacturing process to produce a superior product which is less prone to cracking or leakage. Unfortunately, using a quality replacement part is only half the battle – installation of these units requires additional inspections and a very concise coolant bleed procedure.

STEP 1 - INSPECTION

Inspect the failed unit to determine the cause of the original failure.

• A leak due to corrosion will require the cooling system to be flushed before installation of the new unit

• A split core may have been triggered by over pressurisation. Be sure to check for cylinder combustion leaks

• A leaking coolant hose can draw air into the system resulting in hotspots and poor flow through the cooler

• Make sure the heater core has not been bypassed. This practice removes a critical part of the cooling system –again resulting in reduced flow through the EGR cooler

• Check if the EGR valve itself has not been blanked off. The EGR needs to function to ensure correct and efficient cooler operation.

When installing the new cooler, replace the mounting bolts with new units and torque to manufacturer specifications using mild strength thread locking compound as they are prone to vibrate loose causing the cooler to crack.

STEP 2 - BLEEDING PROCEDURE

Vacuum bleeding is the only way to guarantee that there are no airlocks within the system during coolant fill. This will prevent repeat failure of the cooler.

Attach the bleed adaptor to the coolant fill point and open the air valve. After a few minutes of operation, the coolant hoses will flatten, and the pressure gauge will stabilise with a negative value. Close the valve and disconnect the shop air supply.

Monitor the gauge for a few minutes for any rise in pressure. This indicates

an air leak that must be rectified before continuing. If the gauge remains at negative pressure during this interval, then the refill process can begin.

Keep an eye on the coolant level in the fill container – do not let the suction hose lift air or you will need to start again. When the gauge rises to zero the system is full with no air locks. Start the big Fords engine and allow it to warm up.

Confirm the thermostat opens by checking temperature at both top and bottom hoses. Remember to recheck for any leaks through a full temperature cycle of the cooling system.

ACS CLUTCH REBUILD FACILITY

Fast forward to the present day and the industry has changed focus to a ‘new replacement’ model; however, ACS continues to offer rebuild services for rare applications and maintains a fully operational rebuild facility.

Although rebuilding clutch kits may seem like a thing of the past, it is still an important service for some areas of the industry such as the agricultural sector or vintage vehicle restoration. In cases where new components are simply no longer available in the market, Australian Clutch Services offers a rebuild service to bring worn clutch components back to as new condition.

“Although ACS is geared towards the supply of new clutch kits and components, we still retain a rebuild facility that enables us to recondition clutch kits for customers that require this type of service,” explains Darren Schreuder, Australian Clutch Services Workshop and Technical Support Manager. “We still get a lot of requests for rebuilds for tractors and old farming equipment where sourcing new components is no longer possible. In addition to this, we also offer this service to restoration businesses around the country that require a clutch solution for extremely rare vehicles as well as the motorsport industry where people prefer to

freshen up their motorsport twin plate as a more economical solution.”

The rebuild service is conducted in-house at Australian Clutch Services using their state-of-the-art testing facilities to ensure the clutch is operating to the correct tolerances and specifications. Each clutch kit is analysed to check for rebuild suitability and current pressure plate clamping force etc. before being completely disassembled and rebuilt,

often using various new components that ACS keeps in stock. “Our inventory of rare clutch components is substantial and we have managed to source a wide range of specialist individual components over more than 30 years in business,” explains Darren.

“In instances where we don’t have these components, we are often able to either source the correct components or find alternatives that are suitable for the application.”

After the clutch kit has been restored, ACS technicians will check the specifications of the clutch to ensure it meets the correct tolerances and will then supply the clutch back to the customer. “The process varies depending on the specific clutch kit. Sometimes in motorsport applications we just need to resurface the flywheel and install new friction discs, intermediate plates and casting, in other cases we need to completely rebuild a vintage tractor or commercial application which includes restoring each individual component.”

The ACS rebuild service is accessible through their nationwide distributor network.

THE UNICORN HOIST

Many two post hoists will lift these cars, but compromises are still required. It might mean jacking up a Euro vehicle to get the two post arms under. It might mean putting the US truck a little further back than you’d like because the front arms aren’t quite long enough. But is there a two post hoist that will confidently and safely lift the majority of popular vehicles without compromise? You can decide that for yourself if you read on. NEXT Tech is introducing a hoist

with long enough arms to safely lift Rams, F250s and loaded dual cab utes, but with a very low lift pad of only 82mm. That’s almost 2cm lower than most two post hoists on the market. With one NEXT two post hoist workshops can now service and repair anything from large utes to small Euro vehicles.

The NEXT N-45 4.5 tonne and N-55 5.5 tonne two post hoists are also available in three different heights for standard, tall and extra tall vehicles which equates to 4

metre, 4.6 metre and 5.2 metre tall hoists. This range of hoist is also wide enough to open the front doors fully on most vehicles (including Chevrolet Silverado, for example). Standard delivery includes four rubber protection pads per side of the vehicle, handy steel tool trays on each arm, an emergency pump to lower vehicles in case of power failure and a range of drop in pad adapters.

The NEXT range of hoists are designed in Europe and manufactured in China by one of the world’s largest automotive equipment groups from a very long and distinguished heritage.

Tim Green is the NEXT Tech Equipment Import Director and speaks with passion about the NEXT range of hoists: “I have been dealing continuously with this familyowned manufacturer for more than 25 years. The relationships I’ve built and the trust we have established over that time are irreplaceable. It’s all the little things, the response times, the help offered and the backup we receive from the factories that results in a seamless, fast acting response that really gives me confidence that we are offering Australia a well thought out and well-designed hoist made by experienced,

ROADSAFE’S TOP TIPS FOR SWAY BAR LINK PERFORMANCE AND RIDE QUALITY

All of these factors have some impact on how a driver engages with and trusts their vehicle. Relatively simple chassis components, such as sway bar links can have a very significant effect across all of these factors.

A worn-out sway bar link can create noise and vibration by clunking or knocking underneath a vehicle creating all sorts of noises and vibrations. When in good and serviceable condition sway bar links will be silent and provide a confident sure-footed feeling that enhances comfort and confidence in any vehicle.

Often sway bar links can be fitted incorrectly, which is known as being ‘handed’. This means that there are opposing left and right hand links fitted. On first glance they may look identical, but it is the small things that can get technicians caught out. It is important to check the part numbers to see if they are in fact ‘Left Hand’ or ‘Right Hand’ to ensure that they are fitted to the vehicle correctly.

If sway bar links are fitted incorrectly, they will not last. They may be noisy due to the change in operating angles of the sway bar, potentially making the sway bar contact and hit other nearby suspension components. Often the link will not be able to extend as far as required if installed backwards and will fail in a very short period of time. This is

deemed a fitment issue and not a product related issue and, given the regularity of it occurring, it is an important suspension servicing topic to discuss.

It is important to note that a 4WD fitted with aftermarket suspension which has been raised more than 30mm also requires the connection from the sway bar to the chassis to be extended to compensate for the lift.

When fitted correctly, sway bar links keep the roll of a vehicle under control providing renewed driver confidence in vehicle cornering and steering response.

Roadsafe offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of sway bar link pins

for OE replacements as well as an extensive range of aftermarket extended Heavy Duty options for raised suspension vehicles. The quality of these automotive aftermarket suspension components is backed by a 40,000 kilometre, two year warranty, ensuring that you are providing your customers with a premium quality repair.

All Roadafe sway bar links are E-Coated in a black, corrosion resistant OE style finish.

Most applications include POM inserts for long lasting durability and each component comes with full hardware kits including nuts, washers and bushings. Finally, all Roadsafe suspension components have been designed and manufactured to meet or exceed OE specifications.

The Roadafe sway bar link pin range joins the premium quality Roadsafe suspension component product portfolio that has been a mainstay of the Australian auto repair industry for more than 25 years.

All Roadsafe suspension components are available from Burson Auto Parts and other quality independent auto parts resellers nationwide.

The Citroën DS is seemingly everything French – stylish, quirky, beautiful – in automotive form. Geoffrey Webber’s restored this 1974 example, a goal since falling for them way back in 1959.

It’s a design that still shocks and beguiles almost seventy years after its debut. The Citroën DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, looking like an automobile from a different planet. In a way, it still does. It was the first mass production car to feature hydropneumatic (hydraulic and gas) self-levelling suspension, bringing incredible ride comfort and the handy ability to raise the body for greater ground clearance – ideal for France’s many poor road surfaces.

With Australia also a nation of many a rutted dirt track, the big Citroën has

The Citroën DS is seemingly everything French – stylish, quirky, beautiful – in automotive form. Geoffrey Webber’s restored this 1974 example, a goal since falling for them way back in 1959.

attracted a passionate and loyal fanbase here. As I ride in Geoffrey Webber’s 1974 DS Pallas 23 – its massive black leather seats almost impossibly sink-in comfortable – it’s easy to see why. We’re hauling along at a fair lick over some seriously potholed flood-damaged dirt roads, yet this fifty-year-old beauty is absorbing the hits like a desert rally car. How can something this classic and gorgeous be so damn impressive over glorified goat tracks?

“People say you can’t take something this beautiful on dirt roads, but that’s exactly what it’s designed for,” Geoffrey says. “It’s fantastic on the dirt and I’m able to throw it around. It's a car that did very well on rallies in Africa, Europe and Australia. Some DS owners who have restored theirs won’t take them off-road, but it’s very enjoyable to do so.”

It’s marvellous to see Geoffrey using his Citroën as its designers intended. Yes, a lot of work has gone into its two-year restoration, but he’s not the type to cotton wool his classic. It’s a car to be enjoyed and experienced – if the odd stone chip or loose hub cap (as happened during our test drive) is the price of driving pleasure, so be it.

The French pronounce ‘DS’ like déesse, which translates as ‘goddess’ – a highly apt description of this elegant, aerodynamic work of car art. Geoffrey’s a retired architect and like many in his profession, is attracted to vehicles of design excellence. Many of history’s finest car designers have listed the Goddess as top of the vehicles they wish they’d have penned. It was Italian Flaminio Bertoni who styled this Frenchest of vehicles –the same genius who gave us Citroën’s Traction Avant, 2CV and H van.

“I was living in Ayr, North Queensland, when I first saw a DS,” says Geoffrey. “It was 1959 and I was visiting Townsville with my dad and spotted this strangelooking car on the roadside. I was 14 years old and never seen anything like it, sitting down low and with a single-spoke steering wheel and unusual dashboard. It was original, so different to everything else. It made a huge impact.”

The DS 23 Pallas he owns today was built in Paris in early 1974, and sold by Maxim Motors in Brisbane in May that year. In its original Beige Tholonet colour the flamboyant Citroën and its eccentric first owner, artist Mandy Kerslake, must have been quite the pairing. By the time Geoffrey acquired it in 2010 it was a rolling chassis with many of the body parts already removed, carefully prepared and resprayed.

The rust-free chassis and body panels were relocated to Geoffrey’s sizable shed in Queensland’s rural Mary Valley, ready for the grand rebuild. The new owner took charge of planning, preparation,

cleaning and painting of parts and ordering replacement bits locally and from overseas.

Two experienced Citroën mechanics, Ian Steele and Stephane Laguna, were employed to work on the project at various times, with Geoffrey soaking up knowledge as it progressed. “I’ve acquired lots of mechanical knowledge over the years; you have to when owning a car like the Goddess,” he says. “We owned a Peugeot 505 for 15 years, and I joined car clubs in the late ‘90s so always had access to parts and expertise.”

Even so, the DS need attention from an authorised Citroën mechanic due to the suspension. “Ian Steele lives only an hour from me, and he was in the support car when Jim Reddiex and crew won the 1974 World Cup Rally in a DS,” Geoffrey says. For context, this was a gruelling 29,000km rally from London to Munich via Nigeria where only 19 of the 70 starters finished. Tapping into Ian’s skills has ensured Geoffrey’s DS has been prepared and maintained in rude health.

With engine and gearbox removed the timing chain and starter motor were

replaced and the sump removed, flushed and cleaned. After a compression test the 2.3-litre four-cylinder reported good news so the head wasn’t touched. The main radiator and one for the three-speed Borg-Warner auto gearbox were sent to a specialist for cleaning and testing, as was the steering rack. The local Citroën dealer

was able to supply new Michelin radial tyres which look perfectly of the period.

The usual perishables such as bushes, belts, pipes, hoses and rubbers were replaced, while the interior’s incredible black leather upholstery had been sourced from a specialist in Peru. A local upholsterer repaired the seat foam and

fitted the new leather to exceptional effect. This DS’s seats are sink-in cosy like those in the finest gentleman’s club, and it’s little wonder Geoffrey and wife Narelle have undertaken numerous lengthy interstate trips in the cossetting Goddess.

The unique steering wheel’s been recoated with stitched black leather; quality Jaguar carpet’s been added while there’s new headlining and door trims. The black and white Jaeger gauges and central analogue clock remind how simple design is always the best, while the high-mounted column shift is easy to grab, if a bit too conspicuous.

Geoffrey’s installed a Huon pine centre console with flush period radio, and fitted an aftermarket water temperature gauge to better keep an eye on its vitals. Peer into the footwell and there’s a button brake rather than a pedal – it just takes a touch for the anchors to work. It, like the awkward but gorgeous door handles, show form over function also played a part in the DS’s development.

Now how about that trick suspension? Once started, an engine-driven high pressure pump provides pressure for the suspension, and it’s a thrill to watch the body rise up, ready for the drive. Under

the lengthy bonnet the spare tyre’s at the very front, then there’s a giant metal tank holding the all-important hydraulic fluid. It needs changed at least every two years.

With the restoration complete and the Goddess registered, Geoffrey’s fully embraced DS life, enjoying many Citroën rallies and securing numerous show awards. “It needs continual maintenance, but it’s

enjoyable doing so,” he says. “For driving, it’s far comfier than my much newer DS5. It’s noisier and less economical, but that’s cars of 1950s and ‘60s design.”

The only thing rivalling the drive experience is the sheer visual impact of the body. It’s a stunning design from every angle. From the side its mighty length is best appreciated – at 4874mm long it’s only around 10cm shorter than a new Toyota LandCruiser.

There’s lashings of chrome for the bumpers and wheel coverings, and notice one of the twin headlights each side turns to match the direction of the front wheels. Rear indicators are high mounted just under the roof, while each body panel and piece of glass is curvaceously complex but unquestionably beautiful.

Geoffrey’s affection for the car is obvious, and he’s even authored a definitive guide to the model, Citroën DS, The Classic Car in Australia, a stunning coffee table book that’s a must for the enthusiast. While continuing to enjoy his DS, he’s now working on his next project, a 1976 Citroën GS restoration. Let’s hope the Goddess doesn’t get too jealous about this younger French mistress. ACM

ADDING TEXT MESSAGES TO THE ENGINE ROOM OF YOUR AUTO BUSINESS

For Kristen Vanderzalm, Director at V-Mech Automotive, a mobile car servicing and repair company based in Southeast Queensland, the key was to stand out from their local competition and take their customer service to the next level. The problem for Kirsten and her team, however, was how much time they spent on manual customer interactions, follow-ups and generating reviews. Eager to streamline their operations, increase reviews and offer a customer experience that was as expert as their automotive experience, Kristen went to Podium – a communications and payments platform for local businesses.

PODIUM’S ROLE

Kristen’s vision for implementing Podium stemmed from a desire to “provide customers with the best possible service from end-to-end,” and bring their communication on par with the premium services their business offered. Podium’s automated and user-friendly communications software has not only removed hours of manual work, it has eliminated the need for customers to contact the team for questions about their appointments.

“We’re eliminating the need for customers to contact us. We were getting calls from customers from 6:00am onwards, and we wanted to eliminate that. Podium has been a game-changer for us, because we can provide them with the answers they’re looking for without them needing to call us. Everything is automated using templates, so we’re providing a very convenient, personal experience without investing too much time.”

Besides end-to-end communication, the biggest benefit for V-Mech Automotive is the ease with which they can request reviews. “Getting traction on the reviews was huge for us,” said Kristen.

THE RESULTS:

In just a few short months since using Podium, V-Mech Automotive has seen some great results,

the click of a button. It’s super simple, super easy, and has saved us so much time, all while being professional, which is what I wanted. We’ve had really good feedback from our customers too.” Find out how to make your business textable at www.podium.com.au/auto-services/

DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS TO RECTIFY COMMON RAIL FUEL SYSTEM FAULTS

One of the most common faults with Common Rail Diesel systems can be traced to damage by water contamination in fuel.

With flooding and higher than usual rainfall throughout much of Australia and especially the Eastern States over the last 12 months, coupled with diesel fuels being hydroscopic (readily drawing water from the atmosphere and retaining it), many diesel storage tanks and even vehicles have inadvertently become contaminated with water.

From our experience, the most important initial test you can carry out is to obtain a fuel sample. We can learn a lot from a visual inspection of a fuel sample. Fuel samples should be obtained from an area where water and particles would be likely to gather, for example from the fuel filter base or the fuel tank pick up canister. Place it in a small clear bottle and then inspected with an

LED light. We are looking for contamination damage. This process has been explained in some of our previous articles.

Once you have checked the fuel sample, there are some other tests and operational checks that can be performed to identify the components that requiring further attention: injector compensations (feedback) levels, injector return volumes (magnet valve injectors) or return pressures (Piezo injectors), injector operation isolation, function of EGR valve and operation of turbo VNT/VGT system (note: the EGR valve can often be temporarily blocked off as a test).

The result of fuel contamination damage can be seen with live data checks of rail pressure targets (desired) and actual pressure graphing (the readings should be within 20-40MPA of each other) and the graph will highlight rail pressure stability

or instability when the accelerator pedal is operated repeatedly.

Diesel engine compression tests are a very important primary test to investigating issues in a diesel vehicle. If a vehicle is underperforming or experiencing a combination of issues, it is worth considering a diesel engine compression test.

This test is often used when these issues are occurring:

• Starting problems unrelated to weather or outdoor temperature

• Poor fuel economy or increased oil consumption

• Smoke when started till warm up

• Uneven and rough running at start up

• Unexplainable loss of power

The tool that we use in these situations is the Comprehensive Diesel Compression Test Kit SA-7191D as it has Japanese and European Compression Test Adaptors. Generally, each cylinder should have 300 to 500 PSI, and all cylinders in a single engine should measure within 10 percent of each other. If the compression in the engine is

Most modern Diesel fuel system faults become obvious due to the vehicles poor performance in many ways. It is important to realise that Turbo, DPF and other faults may display as primary but are often due to fuel system issues.

too low or deviates too drastically from one cylinder to the next, this indicates internal damage to your engine.

Often common rail diesel engine faults can be traced to fuel feed pressure or volume issues, but electronic on-board diagnosis cannot always pinpoint fuel feed problems accurately, giving confusing turbo pressure or high fuel pressure circuit related fault codes.

In situations that present like this you might use the Diesel Engine Low Pressure Fuel Diagnostic Kit SA-7845 which has been designed to allow quick and easy diagnostic pressure tests to be carried out on the low-pressure fuel side of a common rail diesel system with the engine running or “Key On” test.

The kit can connect into any lowpressure fuel system that uses 9.89mm quick connectors. It measures low pressure feed from the fuel (lift) pump to the high-

pressure pump and measures fuel return pressure where necessary which helps to diagnose poor/non-starting, loss of engine power, fuel filter blockages, pipe damage, connection leaks and seal damage (air leaks) and, it can be used with the engine running to establish pre/vacuum and post filter pressure variation.

To test injectors, the type of injector will need to be confirmed. This will be either Electromagnet injectors which can be tested with Fuel Return Flow Kit Injector Test Common Rail Diesel SA-8392 or Piezo Electric Injectors which are be tested using an Injector Return Pressure Measurement Tool designed for testing Piezo Injectors SA-2897K.

Fuel contamination is the main cause of premature failure of diesel injectors. Fitting new injectors when the fuel system is still contaminated will result in damage to the new injectors. The fuel system must be thoroughly cleaned and components that may be contaminated must be replaced.

FUEL RETURN FLOW KIT INJECTOR TEST COMMON RAIL DIESEL SA-8392

A common reason for pressure loss is excessive fuel being returned to the fuel tank. If the injector(s) suffer from excessive back leakage, the fuel pump cannot generate enough pressure to let the system operate correctly. This can be more obvious at start and idle as fuel pressure (at these low engine speeds) is directly related to engine cranking speed.

A blocked or malfunctioning injector will send more fuel back to the tank, while a worn injector may be injecting too much fuel into the combustion chamber, and thus sending less fuel back to the tank. The SA-8392 kit makes both conditions obvious. It is comprehensive and can cater for up to 10 injectors in one test. 40 adaptors are included for Bosch, Siemens, Denso and Delphi CRD systems.

Remember fault codes provide a valuable guide but may not identify the real problem!

Issues which can initiate various broadly related fault code results are:

• EGR system failures

• Fuel system contamination/damaged –injectors, fuel pump etc

• Incorrect or contaminated fuel

• Turbo charger failures

• Mass Air Sensor – faulty

• Intercooler Damage – split intake intercooler pipes

• Intake air, pressure and temperature sensor failures

• Faulty DPF temperature pressure sensors or pressure differential switch/sensors

A visual check and physical examination components of the fuel system can be invaluable. Look beyond the fault code to related components that may give rise to any fault codes.

BENDIX ULTIMATE 4WD BIG BRAKE UPGRADE KITS

New Bendix Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kits offer huge braking gains.

Other benefits of the rotors include High Carbon Metallurgy which improves noise dampening while lowering thermal conductivity – together this results in improved durability and stopping power, while robust pillar construction aids thermal stability. Additionally, the Ultimate 4WD Disc Brake Rotors come with SwiftFit surface protection allowing the rotors to be fitted immediately and without the need to clean or treat them with anti-rust oil.

Complementing the Ultimate 4WD Disc Brake Rotors are the proven Ultimate 4WD Brake Pads which have been specially designed for use with slotted rotors. The pads feature ceramic friction material that has low dust and noise properties, while providing high temperature stability and excellent fade resistance. Also included is a Mechanical Retention System (MRS) backing plate, a technology that’s used in commercial vehicle brake pads and offers improved pad attachment strength in heavy duty operating conditions.

Another important component of the front kit is the Bendix 6-Piston calipers – with additional pistons compared to OEM calipers, greater pressure is applied to the brake pads, resulting in shorter stopping distances.

Bendix’s new ADR-compliant

Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kits deliver vastly improved braking performance for owners of dual cab utes and their wagon derivatives, in the convenience of two comprehensive kits (front and rear).

Dual cab utes are not known for having great braking performance, and while stopping power might be adequate in standard specification, the truth is that not many stay in standard trim for long.

The increasing popularity of these cars as dual-purpose vehicles – family haulers and workhorses – means that there’s a huge range of accessories and modifications available. Although these improve functionality, they also add weight, increase centre of gravity and rolling resistance. In short, standard brakes can quickly become underdone and even more so if towing a

camper, caravan or trailer full of tools.

The new Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kits address this situation, offering a high quality, comprehensive braking solutions that are available in the convenience of a kit.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

The front kit includes larger diameter Ultimate 4WD Disc Brake Rotors, Bendix 6-Piston monoblock calipers with bracket mounting kit, as well as Ultimate 4WD Brake Pads and Ultimate 4WD Braided Brake Hoses.

The larger Ultimate 4WD Disc Brake Rotors are a generous 365mm in diameter and feature a ‘Diamond Tip Slot’ that allows gases to escape in demanding driving situations, maintaining braking performance and consistent pedal feel. The rotor design also offers improved self-cleaning qualities.

Also included in the kits are SAEj1401approved Ultimate 4WD Brake Hoses which comply to international design standards and offer the added protection of a braided line with sleeve, leading to firm and consistent brake feel in all conditions. Rounding-out this exciting offering is a litre of Bendix Heavy Duty Brake Fluid, a can of Bendix Clean-up, a tube of Ceramasil brake parts lubricant and a 60 litre Bendix branded icebox.

REAR ULTIMATE 4WD BIG BRAKE UPGRADE KIT WITH DRUM TO DISC CONVERSION

The rear Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kit is a full drum to disc conversion kit, that removes all OE drum assembly and replaces it with the Bendix Ultimate 4WD disc rotors and hydraulic calipers. The installation of the kit requires the removal of all components from the vehicle axles, which is why the kit comes complete with replacement bearings and seals (ABS rings and collars depending on vehicle model).

The kit also includes a replacement park brake mechanism that’s actuated using the OE park brake cable, Bendix Brake

Hoses, Ultimate 4WD Brake Pads and all the ancillary components and accessories mentioned for the front kits.

MEETING ADRs

Owners of the new Bendix Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kits can rest assured that these kits are 100 per cent legal and comply with Australian Design Rules. Some legal variances from state to state will mean that in certain locations (VIC, NSW, ACT, SA and TAS), an engineering inspection will be required to ensure the kits have been installed properly and are functioning correctly, after which a mod plate will be issued.

For owners in QLD and WA, Bendix has a pre-authorised LG1 certificate, and all that’s required after fitment is to advise the registration authority of the installation.

TEST RESULTS REVEAL MASSIVE BRAKING IMPROVEMENT

During development of the Ultimate 4WD Big Brake Upgrade Kits, Bendix undertook extensive testing on an unmodified Dual Cab PX Ford Ranger 4x4. Stopping distance

from 80 to 0 km/h in this standard, unloaded Ranger was 41.5 metres. When this same vehicle was fitted with both front and rear kits, stopping distance dropped to 32.5 metres, an improvement of 9 metres or around 1.5 car lengths.

Separate Bendix testing using a Holden Colorado also demonstrated the dramatic effect adding weight to a vehicle can have on braking performance. In the case of a standard Colorado, braking distance from 80 to 0 km/h when empty was approximately 50 metres. With added weight in the form of vehicle accessories, camping equipment and four occupants (adding an extra 680kg of mass), the stopping distance grew to approximately 75 metres.

FUTURE

New car showrooms are almost empty, forecourts have only dealer demonstrators and there’s a line-up of customer cars in service workshops waiting for delayed parts. Car dealerships of 2022 are vastly different places compared to a few years ago. Covid, chip shortages, shipping delays, factory shutdowns… talk about a perfect storm.

As if dealer workshops didn’t have enough to contend with, most brands are also in the midst of the biggest automotive quantum shift in over a century – electric cars replacing internal combustion. Plug-in hybrids and EVs are already filtering into workshops, and the mechanic’s role in terms of servicing and repair will be more varied than ever.

Pacific Ford in Maroochydore, Queensland,

is acutely aware of change in the air. As I wander through its expansive workshop area it’s the Ford Ranger pickup dominating the space. There’s a Focus and Fiesta up on hoists and a few SUVs dotted around. Can you imagine the scene ten or twenty years ago? Falcons would be everywhere, now there’s not one to be seen.

Evidence, if it were needed, that things change fast. It’s why Branch Manager Alister Eiseman has helped oversee numerous updates for what’s coming in Ford’s immediate future. Namely, electric vehicles and the giant F-150 truck arriving directly from America in right-hand drive. The workshop – and its staff – have to keep up.

“We’re no longer the brand that just sells Falcon V8s and it’s not just about what happens at Bathurst on the weekend,” says

Eiseman. “That’s part of our brand’s DNA and it’s great we’ve got that history, but it’s critical we move and evolve. Change in any business is difficult, but if we continue to do business like we do now, it won’t be sustainable in the next three to four years.”

The Ranger pickup is a far larger vehicle than the likes of a Falcon, but the F-150 presents an even bigger challenge. Pacific Ford has had to upgrade a number of hoists and service bays to accommodate the US truck, then there’s the ever-present car parking and yard space dramas every urban dealer faces. It needs a lot more space to display a new Ford F-150 than it did to show off a Fiesta ST.

Electrification presents an even bigger battle – Ford Australia’s first full EV, the E-Transit – arrives by year’s end. “We almost

turn our focus from being a workshop in a traditional sense to basically being an electronics supplier,” says Eiseman. “Customers will be coming in for over-theair updates rather than an oil change.”

As for the workshop staff, Eiseman says Ford’s been very pro-active in organising face-to-face training sessions and providing ample information for the future changes.

“The way our technicians interact with these cars will be totally different, not least from a health and safety point of view. And there’s charging. It takes only a few minutes to fill a car with petrol, but if we’re delivering 300 cars a month and all need a full charge, the dealership needs the infrastructure for that.”

Pacific Ford’s workshop foreman is Darron Earney. He’s been with Ford since 1985 and at Pacific for 17 years. “It was new Falcons, old Falcons, Cortinas and a lot of older stuff going through the service department back in ’85,” he explains. “Today Ranger is our bread and butter, which are harder to work on, like most newer cars, as there’s so much packed into the engine bay. It’s just not as easy to access things as you could in older cars.”

Earney says a major benefit working for a dealership is regular and comprehensive training, and being able to contact the manufacturer for information when needed. “The training helps us adapt to all the new changes,” he says. “The 1985 version of me wouldn’t be able to work on a modern vehicle. I’d be lost. With the electric cars coming we don’t know how much we’ll be doing on these vehicles. It’s a big change. There’ll be new licenses needed because they can kill you (due to the high voltage).”

When Earney started out Ford’s warranty was only a year – today it’s five – and he

says some customers are more demanding than a few decades ago. “A lot of people’s expectations are way too high regarding costs and what’s covered under warranty,” he explains. “If they have to wait for parts, they’re not happy, but as a dealership we’re governed by how fast parts can get here. The global shortages of parts is really hitting home.”

There are a number of Ford vehicles waiting beside the workshop, the work being held up as the parts supply chaos continues. “Talking to others at different manufacturers we’re all in the same boat,” says Eareny. “We need the parts to turn up or we can’t complete the job. It’s frustrating for all of us.”

Ask any mechanic who has been in the game as long as Earney and you’ll typically hear the same thing: repairing parts has become something of a lost art. “In 1985 you fixed parts, now you just replace the whole part,” he says. “I used to repair alternators and starter motors, you pulled heads off and did valve stem seals and guides. With the electric cars coming, everything’s electronics now when it was once mechanical.”

While Australia’s appetite for the Ford Ranger shows no sign of abating – it’s likely to be Australia’s best-selling vehicle by next year – change is coming very fast. “What drives our market is the European market,” says Eiseman. “We can see electrification becoming the norm there by the mid 2020s and certainly after 2030.”

What will Ford Australia’s workshops look like by then? As EV ownership inevitably snowballs, they’re guaranteed to be very different than what you’ll see today.

VACC FLAGS ELECTION POLICY PRIORITIES

The Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) has launched its 2022 state election manifesto, Fully Charged: The automotive industry’s policy priorities for the next Victorian state government.

The document calls for the implementation of 27 recommendations that will make a difference to the state’s 19,000 automotive businesses and the 110,000 Victorians working in them. Not to mention Victoria’s 4.5 million motorists.

“Automotive is in the midst of unprecedented change. VACC stands ready to work with the next Victorian government to assist the industry to navigate this challenging transition to an electric vehicle fleet,” said VACC CEO, Geoff Gwilym.

The most urgent ‘call’ is to address critical labour shortages across all sectors of the industry. Further, the next state government needs to:

• Create a comprehensive zero and lowemissions vehicle (ZLEV) strategy

• Instigate a three-year apprentice wage subsidy program for employers

• Introduce a three-year apprentice mentoring program to improve retention rates

• Invest in sustainable waste recycling and renewable energy facilities

• Raise Victoria’s payroll tax threshold to $1.2 million per annum

• Implement an annual roadworthy requirement for vehicles aged eight years and over.

There’s more to do, of course, but if the next Victorian government gets these policies in place it will shore up an $11 billion sector.

“The automotive industry is a fundamental component of a wellfunctioning economy, and it is at a critical juncture. With the emergence of ZLEVs and a long-standing skills shortage, industry and government must work together to keep Victoria on track,” said Mr Gwilym.

RANDLE RACING FOR PETER MAC AT SANDOWN

Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle drove a new-look No. 55 Ford Mustang at the Sandown SuperSprint weekend in August, as part of a fundraising initiative for ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Service. ONTrac at Peter Mac is a multidisciplinary service providing care for adolescents and young adults affected by cancer.

In a collaboration between Castrol, Tickford Racing and the Randle family, the fundraising initiative is a particularly personal one for the 26-year-old Victorian. Diagnosed with testicular cancer in early 2020, Randle sought support from the service throughout his treatment, and now serves as a member of the Victorian Youth Cancer Action Board, helping to improve services and support for young cancer patients and their families. Now 18 months cancer-free and in the midst of his first full season in the Supercars Championship, Randle is looking to give back to the service that supported him on his journey.

“I am really honoured to be representing Peter Mac on the grid for this year’s Sandown SuperSprint,” Randle said. “Peter 

Mac were instrumental in treating me during my period with testicular cancer, while also providing me with further assistance from the ONTrac at Peter Mac service, which provides support to adolescents and young adults affected by cancer.

“Last year we held a ride day at Sandown for a bunch of young patients, so it was great to replicate that after the round this year,” Randle continued. We also had 100 Peter Mac staff and patients past and present joining us to cheer on the Castrol Racing Mustang! I am also very excited to launch a Castrol Racing Peter Mac fundraiser to help drive towards a cancer-free future, where all donations will be going towards ONTrac at Peter Mac. As a current board member of the Victorian Youth Cancer Action Board, I am really excited for this initiative and really hope that people can get behind the fundraiser and help make a life changing

difference for people living with cancer.”

Several fundraising opportunities were rolled out across the Sandown race event, allowing fans to directly support young people with cancer. Notably, one race fan won the bonnet of the No. 55 Castrol Racing Ford Mustang, with Lloyds Auctions managing an online auction, from which all proceeds are going to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. Furthermore, a portion of sales of Tickford Racing merchandise at the Sandown SuperSprint were also donated to the service.

Direct donations can also be made on Castrol Racing’s fundraising page, which is now live – https://fundraise.petermac.org. au/sandownsupersprint2022.

Dr Jeremy Lewin, Medical Director of the ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult Service, welcomes the support from Randle and company, which will help drive attention and donations to the service that aims to improve outcomes

for young people with cancer.

“We are thrilled to have such fantastic support from Thomas and the team at Castrol Racing through their program across the Sandown weekend,” Dr Lewin said. “Our service exists to help young people with cancer navigate the extra challenges we know they face. The years 15-25 are a critical period for a person’s development and trajectory in life, and facing a cancer diagnosis and its treatment during that time can be particularly disruptive. The service provides a range of supports aimed at improving outcomes and experiences of young people with cancer. We have worked closely with Thomas since his own cancer diagnosis in 2020, and are delighted to see him doing so well today, and also by his work in support of our service.”

Supports provided by ONTrac at Peter Mac are designed to sit alongside a young person’s cancer treatment and cover everything from exercise and nutrition to mental health, and help to navigate education, employment or family challenges that can arise.

In addition to driving donations, Castrol has also moved to create lasting experiences for young people in the Peter Mac program, providing 100 passes to the weekend’s Sandown SuperSprint to young patients. Over a dozen young people went for the ride of their life with Thomas on Monday, August 22, riding shotgun aboard the Castrol Racing Ford Mustang at a team ride day. Castrol’s Jan Willink, Brand & Product Marketing Manager, ANZ, expressed his delight in supporting the ONTrac at Peter Mac service through Tickford’s rising star, Randle.

“Castrol is extremely proud to support the work done by Peter Mac through their adolescent and young adult cancer service. Whether it’s raising awareness, funds, or simply providing unique opportunities for those involved with Peter Mac programs, we’re thrilled that Castrol can play a small role. I know that the most enjoyable laps Thomas Randle drives this year in the Castrol Racing Mustang will be those with passengers from Peter Mac!”

he crowds came out in solid numbers to enjoy the very best of our Australian competitors and they weren’t disappointed as the category’s winners claimed their place in Jamboree history.

Garrett Advancing Motion is now in its sixth year this year as the naming rights partner for the event and in its seventh year of involvement with Jamboree. Garrett’s support over the last few years during the challenging COVID environment has been unwavering and you only need to watch the interaction with the Garrett Advancing Motion team at events like Jamboree to experience the passion and commitment they have for the Australian Sport Compact scene.

2022 GARRETT ADVANCING MOTION BRISBANE JAMBOREE. WHAT A SUCCESS! August was a massive month for the Australian Drag Car communities with the 2022 Garrett Advancing Motion Brisbane Jamboree taking place under glorious blue skies at Willowbank Raceway and there was action a plenty from the Australian Sport Compact Drag Racing category.

GARRETT G SERIES

The introduction last year of the Garrett Advancing Motion G series has been huge, with last November seeing the release of the new G40-900 (62mm) and G40-1150 (71mm). These two turbochargers have been engineered for 2.0 litre up to 6.0 litre engine displacements and can support up to 1150 horsepower. The new G series turbochargers are more advanced than previous generations like the GT, GTX, and GTX Gen ll. The G Series 40 turbochargers are designed to replace the GTX4088R and to be the step between the G35 and G42 Turbos.

JET RACINGS COLLIN WILLSHIRE

Collin Willshire is a man of many talents

and manages to wear several hats very successfully as both the team owner of Jet Racing (Australia’s largest and fastest four-cylinder drag racing team), as well as being the Jamboree owner and event organiser after taking the reins from Ray Box back in 2015.

But Collin is the first to sing the praises of his family and team that works tirelessly to make both Jet Racing and Jamboree a success. Chatting with Collin in between runs at the Brisbane Jamboree he shared: “We have been struggling after COVID to get the drag scene back happening and this event has been a testament to people wanting to get back to racing and for spectators turning up to events. Sport

Compact racing is still strong and it’s going to get stronger again, and we have had a big international following that has been enjoying our live streaming. So, as well as having thousands of spectators in the stands enjoying the racing and amazing Queensland weather this weekend, we have also had thousands of viewers from around the world enjoying the live stream.

Collin continued: “The rivalry in the Sport Compact scene between our international friends and partners globally is huge. The racing fraternity in places like the USA, Brazil, and particularly with the Puerto Ricans is massive for the Sport Compact scene. It’s not just about trophies it’s about breaking world records. It’s about going 

the fastest and quickest regardless of if you’re driving a 20B, a four cylinder, a 13B or a V8.”

Jet racing is named after Collin’s eldest boy, who was only a baby when Collin and wife Katie Willshire first set up Jet Racing. “It was a very different set up, initially we were only a small team and over the years it’s evolved and grown to our three-car set up today. The 1200 was our first car and Kelly drives that now as well as helping me run the Jamboree events as well. Then, we wanted to step it up a little bit, so we went to the Eclipse. As we decided to go faster with that, we went back and forth with our friends in the US becoming the fastest four cylinder in the world. In 2018 we went to Orlando, and we actually took that record at 6.200. We have since lost that record which we are working on taking back again.”

PLENTY OF THRILLS AND A FEW UNFORTUNATE SPILLS

The 2022 Brisbane Jamboree saw a number of crashes which we are happy to say didn’t end in any injuries with the cars safety systems doing what they were designed to do. Tony Wedlock had a big accident at the 1000ft mark which saw him hit the wall and roll the car in his first major accident. He was released from hospital that same night quite sore but in one piece. Another competitor who had a close call after making a record run was George

Josevski. After having a few small issues at testing before the event, George and his team managed their first full clean pass and ran a single Cam VL record of 7.26, then following day they went back out and ran 7.21 at 193.5MPH – breaking their own record. It was on the next run that George blew his converter which erupted into a significant fireball, which I managed to film in pretty amazing slow-motion footage, but again, thankfully, both George and the VL came out shaken but otherwise in good shape.

George has recently just put the Garrett G55 91mm on his VL which has replaced the GTX55 88mm on the car initially and after stepping up to the G55 has seen substantial numbers in different revs, as they are picking up power very early.

“In equal pound for pound we are making around 100 more horsepower at 9000 rpm but in the early stages at around 7200-7400 we are seeing massive number changes. The reliability of the Garrett product is amazing, we believe in the product and that’s why we buy them,” said George.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS

Congratulations to the winners from all categories and we hope to see you in Melbourne at Heathcote Park Raceway on October 13, 14 and 15 for another massive Garrett Advancing Motion Jamboree event.

As the world emerges from its COVID-enforced cocoon and looks to once again spread its wings, workshops and technicians are finding themselves inundated.

It can be a real challenge to maintain the high level of service and competence demanded by customers whose businesses and clients are, in turn, demanding so much from them.

Never has it been more important for a pro workshop to be well fitted out with the

right tools and equipment. While the pace for both private and fleet vehicle owners may have slowed in recent times, the need for transport of all kinds is quickly growing again. Businesses which may have mothballed commercial vehicles or reduced fleet sizes during the downturn are now frantically rebuilding, desperate to keep up with the need for road-based transport systems.

Of course, manufacturers didn’t stop development during the down time.

Research and innovation continued at its usual frantic pace, and now workshops need to be sure they’re equipped for to deal with the latest service requirements and the newest technological advances.

What kinds of tools and equipment range should a reliable, busy workshop / car service be considering?

We’ve looked into it and gathered a few of the really important ones together for your consideration.

You’re welcome.

The comprehensive Tierratech Motor Clean range is specially designed for the automotive industry with a range of models to suit the smaller workshop up to the largest heavy commercial transport operation. The equipment capabilities range from 30 to 8000 litres with popular models including the 400 litre for passenger cars, 600 litre suitable for most diesel engines and the 1,000 litre model for large commercial engines taking the block, cylinder head, cam shaft, bearings, nuts, bolts etc. plus all types of materials. Now the new 185 litre unit fits perfectly into the range making it ideally suited to smaller operators who could not previously justify the cost.

The equipment uses a working frequency of 40 kHz (sweep system +2%) being the most suitable for the industry as it achieves optimal cleaning without damaging any soft materials such as aluminium, magnesium, brass etc.

Running costs for these advanced machines can be as low as $1.40 per day operating a five-day week with the 400 litre machine using 175 kw hours over a seven-day period. Operating times can be programmed and it operates at 70°C

with the units holding their heat overnight. Ultrasonic waves osculate with a 6” travel agitation to ensure all parts of the components are completely cleaned.

‘These high quality units clean regardless of the complexity of the pieces especially internal recesses and hard to reach areas, they reduce energy costs, are more environmentally friendly and dramatically reduce labour time,” said General Manager, Premier Machinery and Components, Daniel Parker.

Using the right chemicals, heat and agitation produces spectacular results as can be demonstrated by Premier Machinery at their parent company plant. It is important to use the specified chemicals which are low cost at $375 per 25kg drum and lasts between six weeks to six months depending on usage.

The units are easy to operate via an advanced touch screen, which provides functional and intuitive access to ultrasonic time setting and peripheral or optional systems, with a programmable weekly calendar.

A CAREER CHANGE

A whirlwind journey to becoming a Snap-on franchise owner in New Zealand.

It takes guts to pack your belongings in a container and tell your Dad, “I’ll let you know where to send it.” But that’s just what Regional Franchisee of the Year for 2022, Paul Woosnam did with his partner when they set off across the world well over a decade ago.

Paul and his partner were originally based in the UK working in various roles before realising the pace was getting too much. A decision was made to take a break for a year and they ended up in Australia. This is when a chance conversation led him to Snap-on and eventually to Christchurch in New Zealand.

After checking out the Snap-on Sydney office and then heading over to New Zealand, starting his own Snap-on franchise happened fairly quickly for Paul.

“There was a lot of hands-on teaching, which when you’re green was brilliant,” Paul reflects. “After ten days of training in the U.S., I literally landed back home, picked my truck up, and the next day was on the road, with support directly by my side for three weeks in the truck. It was great. The onboarding process was slick.”

Without a background in the auto industry, Paul’s previous life across retail in the UK, points to how a Snap-on franchise can be a career change and complements various industry backgrounds. For Paul, the business skills he developed over many years in the UK, came to the fore when running his own business.

“The difference with Snap-on compared to starting a business from scratch is that solid foundation,” says Paul. “If you set up your own business, you have to

do everything: branding, logos, websites, business plans, you name it. But with Snap-on as a franchisee, you have that ready for you and everyone is there to support you 100 per cent. There isn’t a day that doesn’t go by where I’m not touching base with someone in the network or with support staff.”

Paul saw quick success as Rookie Franchisee of the Year and now Regional Franchisee of the Year. He reflects on his two awards saying they are due to his immediate dedication to hard work when joining as a franchisee, as well as how useful his prior experience came to be running the business.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

“My week kicks off on a Sunday night,” Paul explains. “I get my prelist ready for Monday so I can just get up and go the next day. Most of my days, I’m out of the house before 7 and they are relatively long days. My deliveries come Friday night and so I sort that out on the weekend. The more turnover there is, the bigger the volume of off-truck work.”

60 AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au INDUSTRY PEOPLE

Paul is up there as one of Snap-on’s most experienced franchisees in New Zealand. Not mincing his words, he responds instantly when we asked him what he thinks is key to succeeding as a franchisee with the brand.

“Easy. Do what you say you’re going to do. If you say you’re going to ring someone back, ring them. If you say you’re going to deliver, then deliver. The Snap-on program is solid and it gives you the chance to create relationships and be personable. Here in New Zealand, we don’t have that level of competition like elsewhere, but our customers still have options. Being true to your word and paying attention to your client is key to keeping and building your business.”

Disc Brakes Australia forging ahead to own the wheel end. NEW BRAKE HOSE RANGE

Brake hoses are the latest addition to DBA’s comprehensive range of STREET SERIES hydraulic brake products.

As part of DBA’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in braking technology, the company is further expanding its range of OE-replacement and upgrade brake components under its STREET SERIES label. The latest release consists of a series of brake hoses as part of DBA’s recently launched Hydraulics range. Initially featuring nearly 500 part numbers covering multiple applications, DBA is continuing to roll out additional items over the coming months and into the future.

Having led the market in rotor technology for many decades, DBA’s transition to a premium ‘one stop shop’ for anything wheel end is on full display this year, resulting in complete braking solution offers for the customer. Known for accurate and comprehensive parts cataloguing, DBA has applied the same stringent approach to its new brake hose range by linking it to all major Australian and international industry database formats.

Brake hoses are a critical component within a vehicle’s braking system, responsible for carrying the fluid pressure from the brake pedal to the brake cylinder. DBA believes there must be no compromise in quality and performance when it comes to safety of relevant vehicle components. So, whilst intended as OE replacement products, DBA brake hoses come with a range of technological and quality features that set them apart from other brands.

DBA brake hoses are made from extra durable EPDM rubber. All end fittings are made from high-grade steel and electroplated with a zinc coating, delivering superior corrosion and rust resistance. Banjo end fittings are supplied with copper washers for better sealing properties.

The brake hose manufacturing process culminates in extensive quality and durability testing. Interesting to note that DBA’s test criteria by far exceed those of other brands in the market. DBA products surpass SAE International standards for durability by up to 400 per cent (nominally

approximately 60 per cent lower than SAE International requirements (DBA 0.360.54cc/m vs. 1.08 - 1.38cc/m at equal test pressures). Lower volumetric expansion aids the speed of fluid transfer when braking, hence reducing braking distance.

As a result of DBA’s advanced manufacturing processes and its product quality, the hoses far exceed standards set by the Department of Transport (DOT), the

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 106) and SAE J1401 standards as well as those of many competitors, giving the customer the extra peace of mind at a competitive cost.

Each DBA brake hose, where applicable, is supplied with brackets, moulded plastic guards, and wire clips for ease of installation.

All DBA brake hoses come in easy-tostore, straight plastic sleeves, to eliminate material fatigue from rubber being bent inside the packaging.

All hoses feature the DBA logo imprinted on the rubber part for easy identification.

KYB steering components pursue the drivability to satisfy everyone.

KYB RELEASES REPLACEMENT STEERING COMPONENTS TO THE AFTERMARKET

Supported by KYB’s 50+ years of designing and manufacturing steering components for OE customers, this extensive experience has enhanced the development and quality of the KYB aftermarket range.

Within the Australian aftermarket, five KYB Steering product groups will be initially stocked by NGK Australia which include:

• Ball joints

• Tie rod ends

• Steering rack ends

• Stabilizer links

• Control arms

“These components are crucial parts of a vehicle’s steering and suspension system and must be in excellent working condition, as they have great influence over a driver’s ability to maintain vehicle control and comfort,” explained Larry Coulthard, Group Product Manager for KYB.

Steering and suspension components have a long-standing partnership given both product groups are generally integrated to work cohesively with each other in a vehicle.

As KYB is the brand of choice for suspension products within the Australian aftermarket, it goes without saying using the manufacturer and designer premium steering components is a smart approach.

KYB are well regarded for their vehicle specificity, making each part ideal for its corresponding make and model.

Larry Coulthard concluded, “Just as it is with our suspension components, our process rings true with KYB steering components. Perfect fit first time, every time. KYB has been steering you in the right direction for over 50 years!”

OE suspension manufacturer KYB has commenced the global release of a range of ‘in-demand’ replacement steering components to the automotive aftermarket industry.

Many are purchased by a local auto parts recycler and dismantled for parts. More than 80 per cent of a vehicle can be re-used or recycled. That means, by selecting a recycled part, you are making not only a cost-saving choice but one that is more sustainable.

MAKE A SUSTAINABLE CHOICE BY SELECTING RECYCLED PARTS

One auto parts recycler making a large contribution to the availability of recycled parts in Australia is ACM Parts. With sites across Australia, ACM is able to rescue parts from more than 10,000 vehicles each year. Those parts are taken through ACM’s production process and sold as their ‘Reclaimed’ range. ACM puts each reclaimed part through an extensive quality control process, to ensure it is still perfect in form, function and fitment.

Since opening in 2014, ACM Parts has maintained a high standard in recycled automotive parts through their Reclaimed range. ACM is Australia’s largest provider

of alternative and specialty parts to the automotive repair industry, keeping vehicles on Australian roads. They support better ways to repair vehicles, by providing a choice of options to extend the life of a vehicle through an extensive range of parts. Choosing recycled automotive parts is a cost-effective option for automotive repairs, with recycled parts often selling for less than 50 per cent of their new counterparts. As a bonus, choosing recycled parts is also a more sustainable option, adding peace of mind that you are reusing an existing part instead of something new needing to be manufactured. Recycled parts also offer convenience. They generally come with most of the necessary pieces and attachments included, for easier installation.

ACM Parts’ Reclaimed range features both Collision and Mechanical parts, each with their own quality control processes to ensure all reclaimed parts sold are of the highest quality available.

ACM’s Reclaimed range is sold to repair shops across Australia, used as

replacement parts and installed into registered vehicles to extend their life.

ACM’s contribution to recycling deregistered vehicles doesn’t end after usable parts are removed. Anything left over from the vehicle is carefully separated and re-purposed. All fluids are drained separately and filtered, to be re-used. All leftover metals, plastics and rubber are melted down and used in the manufacture of new items including roads, containers and ducting.

When purchasing ACM Reclaimed Parts, you are taking a positive step towards protecting our precious resources. Savings in time, energy, and ultimately money represent real value for vehicle repairers and the whole community.

NAPA AUTO PARTS KNOWS MOTORSPORT

Celebrating the first anniversary of their NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy in July, announcing the sponsorship of Jett Johnson in April, and launching their new grassroots racing podcast, NAPA Auto Parts isn’t hitting the brakes anytime soon.

In July 2021, NAPA Auto Parts announced the NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy –an online portal designed to offer tools and resources to any motorsport enthusiast that is striving to be the best they can be – on and off the track. Since then, they have gained more than 450 members and have a large range of invaluable online content for those who want to take their racing skills to the next level.

NAPA Auto Parts have also recently launched their new podcast, the ‘NAPA Auto Parts Grassroots Racing Podcast’. The podcast details all motorsport at a national, state and club level, talking to some of the best local drivers that Australia and New Zealand have produced. Check out the podcast for interviews with multichampionship winning Australian race car driver, Tony Ricciardello, Australian Drivers’ Championship two-time winner, Tim Macrow, and many more. Hosted by journalist Garry O’Brien and commentator

Darren Smith – the podcast can be heard on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. You don’t need to be a member of the Academy to tune in, so check it out to hear all the latest in motorsport news.

In April this year, NAPA Auto Parts announced the sponsorship of Jett Johnson, the grandson of three-times Bathurst 1000 winner Dick Johnson and son of Supercars race winner Steve to wear the NAPA blue and yellow for the 2022 Turtle Wax Trans Am Series.

Johnson made the step up from statebased Hyundai Excel racing at the start of this year and committed to the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series to develop his driving skills ahead of progressing towards his dream of racing in Supercars.

In only a few short months Jett has already been making his mark, achieving second in Race 1 and first in Race 2 at the Winton Motor Raceway in the TA2 Muscle Car Series. He also took out the Hoosier Cup for rookie drivers at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Johnson says the biggest challenge of moving into the Trans Ams has been getting his head around the rear-wheeldrive versus front-wheel-drive in his previous Excel.

“For me, getting used to how the car handles, how it reacts in different situations and once you get that general feel of the car, and confidence in the car then it’s quite easy to make those steps forward,” he said.

“I probably went into this season with quite high expectations in Trans Am, but it is just so competitive and every round you’re having to work your butt off to find every little tenth just to try to get the better of the other competitors.”

Johnson says he’s most looking forward to the Sandown circuit later in the season.

“On paper, it doesn’t look that exciting a layout, but from the footage I’ve watched it looks unreal. From talking to dad and grandad, they love the place, so I’m pretty excited to race there,” he said.

“Hopefully we can take the next step forward into something great next, but I’m not sure what that will be at the moment. Currently we’re doing Trans Am again next year, where I’ll be focusing on getting a good result after learning the tracks this season.”

Jett is part of a team of superstars that NAPA Auto Parts already sponsor globally, likes of V8 Supercars star Bryce Fullwood, NASCAR driver Chase Elliott, World of Outlaws driver Brad Sweet and NHRA Drag Racing driver, Ron Capps.

MEET JIM TATTON, MISTER MOPAR

There’s an event at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway each year called Mopar Sunday. There’s drag racing and a show and shine for hundreds of exceptional cars living under the Mopar umbrella – Chryslers, Plymouths, Dodges and more. Now in its 19th year, it was originally set up, would you believe, as a birthday celebration for local enthusiast Jim Tatton.

I briefly met Jim at this year’s Mopar extravaganza, now 74 years old but still the go-to guy for some of the finest, rarest and desirable American metal. Intrigued by his story, we catch up again at his rural home workshop, filled with used and new old stock parts collected over decades, and a couple of resto works in progress.

First is a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado, a completely original survivor car. “I owned one back in 1972,” Jim says, “and it was like driving the Starship Enterprise. This one’s from a deceased estate in California and has never been touched.”

Originality and matching numbers are Jim’s thing. For those in the Mopar know, it’s triplecarb V-code 440cu in (7.2L) Six Pack engines,

and the legendary 426cu in (7.0L) Hemi he covets. Little wonder there’s a Hemi-powered Plymouth ‘Cuda in primer at his workshop –one of the most legendary and desirable V8 muscle cars ever to come out of America.

For over 40 years Jim’s been importing such vehicles here, sourcing them mainly

from drier American states and Hawaii. His philosophies are both simple and smart. “It costs just the same in time and dollars to restore a cheaper non-matching numbers car as a matching-numbers high-dollar one,” he says. “In the end you get a car which is worth a premium. It’s also better

MECHANIC PROFILE WORDS AND IMAGES | IAIN CURRY

buying cars needing repairs as they’re less costly to buy and the quality of panel work is better here in Australia. Plus you pay in Australian dollars.”

Jim says he revels in the sourcing of such cars and rare parts. It’s the thrill of the chase. He’s smartly worked with other specialists and experts to find and fix up rare American muscle. Texan Mopar dealer Bob West was ideal at finding cars for him, as was Mike French who owned a wrecking yard in the Kentucky hills. Back on the Gold Coast his mate Trevor Edgar was a right-hand-drive conversion expert, and they’d team up for American trips over to find muscle car rarities. Once landed in Australia, Gold Coaster Kevin Kent was charged with rebuilding or up-speccing motors, while Jim set up a panel shop for the bodywork.

Jim would be across things like the cars’ fuel systems, brakes, suspension, electrical, glass, lights and interior. “I do the fiddly, hands-on stuff,” he says, showing me a pair of dashboards he’ll “get detailed up and back to pristine,” with new old stock dash pads from his bounty. It all sounds quite the operation. “At one stage we had 30 or 40 cars we’d brought here,” Jim says. “Once finished we’d sell them on, but through all that I kept the good cars.”

For example? His matching-numbers 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T SE with just 18,000 miles showing, found in Texas and treated to a comprehensive, perfect restoration. “We got it OE certified at Mopar

AND MATCHING NUMBERS ARE JIM’S THING.”

Nationals which is a big deal,” he says. “They put it on a stand and all the old guys come round and check all the nuts, bolts and heads are correct – basically as it would drive off the factory floor.”

Jim shows me pictures of two of his previously-restored Six Pack Plymouth ‘Cudas, one yellow, one red. “They were both built on exactly the same day, and that side really interests me,” he says. “Today they’re owned by two different people in Brisbane, living only a few kilometres apart. They’re still together after all these years.”

In his workshop is another ‘Cuda: a matching-numbers ’70 Hemi from Arkansas that had been built as a Sox & Martin (arguably drag racing’s most famous team) tribute. “It had to be stripped out from the firewall and it was tubbed so it’s a lot of work,” he says in front of the beautifully-shaped shell in primer. “We have the correct motor so it’s more valuable, although we had to pay $10,000 just for the original Hemi block! When it’s finished it’ll be worth $250 or even $300,000.”

Where did the enthusiasm all stem from? Easy. Back in his native New Zealand his dad ran a Chrysler/Dodge dealership. “After uni I worked at the car yard,” Jim says. “Back then I’d have killed to have a big block Mopar. I sold a Pacer, a 360cu ’72 hardtop Chrysler which at $5500 was a lot of money; we had a lot of Chargers and lots of Australian stuff. Since those days the US stuff was always worth a lot more than Australian muscle cars, but that’s turned around now.”

Hearing about the cars Jim’s owned over the decades is muscle car fantasy land. One of his first cars, bought in Christchurch, was a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback. Then his 1969.5 Dodge Super Bee with lift-off fibreglass hood and 440 Six Pack motor was “a lot of fun,” while his 1998 Dodge Viper V10 was “a buzz, but not something you’d want to drive around all the time.”

Despite being in his 70s Jim insists he’s “still a boy,” and plans to go back to America soon, hopefully with his sons, and who knows what he’ll bring back? “Years ago we’d be up in the hills of Indiana, there were guys with lumberjackets on and whiskey in a paper bag calling us ‘the boys from Australia,’” says Jim. “Would I do it today? I don’t think so. But it was an adventure.” ACM

BURSON SPONSORED TOP FUEL TEAM TAKES RUNNER-UP HONOURS IN 2022

The inaugural Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship came to an end at the spectacular Nitro Up North event held at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Dragstrip on June 17 and 18.

While team owner and driver Phil Lamattina missed out on the title in a duel that included racing his Burson Auto Parts teammate Shane Olive twice, it was rival Peter Xiberras who took home the 2022 Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Championship trophy after an impressive season long performance.

“Congratulations to Peter and his team, they have done a great job and deserve the rewards,” Lamattina said.

“We have nothing to complain about, we had a good season. I was the first driver to win two events and my teammate Shane won his first event in a rookie year, plus a stack of podiums.

“None of this would be possible without the support of Burson Auto Parts and FUCHS Lubricants, we are lucky to have such awesome support from them as well as Dayco, Rocky Lamattina and Sons and everyone else who has helped along the way,” Lamattina added.

While the team results saw Phil Lamattina fall just short of the championship title, this marquee event was fantastic for the teams and the fans, held in conjunction with the Supercars and the Australian Superbikes Championships at the Merlin Darwin Triple Crown.

Lamattina went into the final with 450 points, just 10 points behind championship leader Peter Xiberras.

In his rookie season, Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Dragster driver Shane Olive arrived at the event with 260 points and at sixth position in the championship.

The Darwin track provided some challenges for each car’s tune-ups. Along with the heat and humidity, track conditions were challenging with no racing on the dragstrip held during the day, and very limited racing on the surface in the lead-up to the event.

Lamattina finished the championship as runner-up with 500 points, 40 behind new champion Xiberras. Olive finished in sixth with 330 points in what was an outstanding rookie season.

Team boss Lamattina explained, “Of course we are disappointed, but that’s racing, you win some, you lose some.”

“We will be in Alice Springs to start the new Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Championship season in just two months, so now we will prepare for that. Whether it is myself or Shane, it’s time for some gold for the trophy cabinet,” Lamattina stated.

The 2022/23 Burson Auto Parts Top Fuel Championship gets underway as one of the major attractions of the Red Centre Nationals event taking place in Alice Springs on September 1 and 2.

CAPRICORN’S BRIGHTEST STARS ANNOUNCED

as a repairer. The unique judging criteria created a level field for first to fourthyear apprentices across all disciplines. This encouraged Capricorn Members to nominate apprentices who demonstrated outstanding character and potential.

“Completing an automotive apprenticeship is no easy undertaking. The qualified technician shortage highlights how important it is to train the next generation, support our apprentices and create a pipeline of talent for the future.”

In its fifth year running, Capricorn’s prestigious apprentice achievement award received 341 nominations from automotive businesses across Australia and New Zealand. The high calibre of entries received in 2022 is a testament to the ongoing value and importance of the apprentices in the industry.

By recognising automotive apprentices’ contribution, Capricorn aims to help build a more sustainable industry and forge deeper relations with young repairers and workshops.

The top five Capricorn Rising Star Apprentice of the Year competition finalists are:

• Marama Thompson - Auto Super Shoppe Eurotech, New Zealand

• Harrison Oastler - NQ Kool Cars and Kustoms, Queensland

• Jessica Smith - Harris Automotive, Victoria

• Jackson Vogelsang - Fleurieu Crash Repairs, South Australia

• Chelsea Bowers - John Edwards Automotive, Queensland

Capricorn CEO Automotive, Brad Gannon, said the awards showcased the talent and diversity of automotive aftermarket apprentices from panel and fabrication to auto electrical, general mechanical, heavy diesel and more.

“Unlike other apprentice competitions that focus purely on the technical proficiency of nominees, Capricorn Rising Stars prioritises rewarding apprentices who demonstrate a passion for the automotive industry, a positive can-do attitude and a strong commitment to forging a long career

Harris Automotive was impressed by the commitment and courage of Jessica Smith, their nomination that made the top five, saying “Jessica has definitely shown us that women do belong in the workshop, she puts in 100 per cent and has given us faith that there are still hard-working youth willing to get their hands dirty, learn a trade and take pride in their work.”

Strong female representation has also been a prominent feature of this year’s Rising Star awards, with women making up three of the five finalists for the first time in 2022.

The Rising Stars Apprentice of the Year Awards is delivered by Capricorn in partnership with Castrol, Repco and the Workshop Whisperer.

The top five finalists received a $1,000 Repco voucher, $1,000 cash from Castrol and tickets to two Repco masterclasses. The overall winner will also receive an additional $5,000 in prize money from Castrol and a Capricorn Rising Stars trophy. The winner’s workshop will also receive complimentary enrolment in the Workshop Whisperer’s Service Advisor Pro online program.

The five finalists will now go on to compete for the coveted title of Capricorn Rising Star 2022.

“We congratulate all the finalists in these special awards and we wish the best of luck to our top five finalists,” Brad Gannon concluded.

SUPER ANNUAL BALANCE REPORTING

ATO: Super – annual balance reporting reminders issued.

The ATO has issued a reminder that super funds need to report the 30 June 2022 account balance amount, any applicable phase values, notional taxed contributions, and defined benefit contributions, on or before 31 October 2022 via the Member account transaction service (MATS).

When reporting annual amounts and balances for 30 June 2022, super funds should ensure the member account is already reported through the Member Account Attribute Service (MAAS). The Australian business number (ABN), unique superannuation identifier (USI) and member account identifier reported in the MATS should be identical to those reported through MAAS for the member account.

When there is no account balance and you are reporting other amounts, ensure you report a zero value in the mandatory account balance field.

In case of amendments, funds are required to correct a 30 June 2022 account balance within 30 days of becoming aware of an error by reporting a subsequent 30 June 2022 account balance amount. This can be done by cancelling the original transaction or overwriting the amounts reported.

MENTAL HEALTH AT WORK

The NSW Government has launched free mental health resources to support regional and rural small businesses, with more than 60 per cent of those businesses indicating mental health or stress for themselves or their staff is a concern.

SafeWork NSW Director for Health and Safe Design Jim Kelly said that with so much going on in regional NSW, from floods to the pandemic, healthy workplaces need to be part of the solution to support communities to recover from these challenges.

“Workplace mental health initiatives deliver strong and positive outcomes for NSW businesses and their employees. We spend a third of our life at work, so making sure mental health is promoted, managed and supported in the workplace is extremely important,” Mr Kelly said.

“Regional businesses face unique challenges including poor service support, distance, cost, isolation, seasonal and labour issues, traumatic events and hesitation to seek help for mental ill-health.

“The new Regional Resources Kit outlines positive actions and links to

support services to help these businesses create a positive and supportive work environment. It has easy actions business owners and leaders can take towards a mentally healthy workplace, no matter their region, size or industry.

“The NSW Government also offers a free and confidential coaching service to help regional businesses achieve big benefits

with small changes. Tailored coaching is delivered online or over the phone at a time convenient to the business owner.”
