While December still had a few weeks to run when this edition of Deals on Wheels went off to the printer, one thing seemed certain – 2022 will see a new record set for truck sales in Australia. At the end of November 40,267 trucks had been sold. The 2018 sales record sits at 41,628 and December sales normally average 3,400 trucks. It's clear the 2018 record will be beaten, it’s just a matter of by how much.

Heavy-duty

With 1,519 units sold in November 2022 the heavy duty segment showed a 15.4 per cent increase on the results of November 2021 –equating to an extra 203 trucks sold.

It’s a trend the segment has carried over every month so far this year, with total heavy truck sales for the 11 months to the end of November 2022 of 13,485 – up 1,752 on the same period in 2021.

In terms of the top five sellers as at November 30, the leaderboard has Volvo (320), Kenworth (299), Isuzu (199), Scania (109) and UD Trucks (106).

Medium-duty

Isuzu (356), Hino (172), Fuso (118), UD Trucks (12) and Iveco (12) lead the charge in the Medium Duty segment of Australia’s truck market which clocked up 696 sales for the month of November 2022.

Year to date, the Medium Duty segment was 506 vehicles ahead of the same time in 2021, a gain of 7.6 per cent. The total sales for 2022 as at November 30 in this segment stood at 7,162.

Light-Duty

Small truck sales for November 2022 were 140 trucks ahead of the same month in 2021, an increase in sales volumes of 10.8 per cent.

In this busy segment of the market 14,651 small trucks had been sold to November 30, 2022, with November itself delivering a record 1,436 units to keen buyers.

All up, the light duty truck segment was 1500 trucks ahead in sales at the end of November, with Australia’s biggest selling truck manufacturer Isuzu leading the charge (723), followed by Fuso (281), Hino (136), Iveco (119)and Mercedes-Benz (64).

Western Star are back in the news right now with a few new models having just been released, which is good news for fans keen to pick up older versions as fleets upgrade.

Truckwork’s tow trucks are hard to miss, with deep purple paint and bright green lettering across them they catch the eye of anyone who might happen to see them towing heavy vehicles in Adelaide or showing off their fleet of Kenworth trucks at a truck show.

Truckworks is an Adelaide-based tow, repair and vehicle recovery company that has been operating since the 1990s when the founders Lyndon and Sharon Reynolds moved across the Bass strait from their native Tasmania.

The couple had experience operating a similar business that focused on logging trucks and decided to make the move after spying a gap in the South Australian market for a business that focused on heavy vehicle recovery. Operations manager

Gordon Smith says it has been Lyndon’s hard work since then that has earned the company the reputation and staff loyalty it enjoys today.

“The staff have full confidence in Lyndon,” says Smith.

“It’s all class, if he sees something

that’s not done properly, he’ll see that it’s done again”

Truckworks main business is recovering accident-stricken vehicles in South Australia. Working closely with insurance companies Truckworks can tow a vehicle to the nearest mechanic or back to their workshop where they are able to make the necessary repairs and restorations themselves.

They can right toppled vehicles and if they’re seriously damaged dispatched a recovery crew to the accident site.

Truckworks prides itself in being able to handle all the jobs associated with towing and recovery. It can handle the whole process from recovery at the site to repair and restoration back at their workshop, including painting.

The business maintains two painting ovens, one 12 metres and the other 19 metres in size, allowing them to undertake custom paint jobs for any sized vehicle.

“We’re a one-stop-towing-shop,” says Smith.

Certainly, the custom paint job particularly is a real point of difference for the towing company.

Some of the works they have completed include a giant green Hulk painted smashing through the side of a truck, classic hot-rod flame patterns and a marvel super heroes designed truck.

Truckworks also handles sales of Peterbilt trucks that they import from the US.

It imports quality Peterbilt trucks from America and uses some of the industry’s most trusted brands in modifications to create reliable, tough vehicles its customers can depend on. It says its vehicles are customised and engineered for Australian conditions and completely ADR compliant.

Truckworks only recovers damaged vehicles in South Australia and the Northern Territory, but they can tow vehicles anywhere in the country.

South Australian towing and repair company Truckworks makes no apologies for wanting to be the best tow company in the country. ATN sat down with operations manager Gordon Smith to talk about the company’s history and what good service means in the competitive tow industry.

There’s no missing this custom Peterbilt

Smith says they have been out on jobs as far as Katherine in the Northern Territory, around 3,000 kilometres away.

“We’ve been to every major capital city, if not further,” says Smith.

Towing and recovery for insurance companies make up 90 per cent of what Truckworks do as well as restorations.

Smith says occasionally they get to see some beautiful vintage trucks come through for restoration that are a real joy to clean up.

The Truckworks factory also has the tools to conduct rust removal work and smooth out dents and bumps and a dedicated paint and refinishing team to complete the job and gets its customer’s vehicle looking better than new.

Their fleet of capable vehicles helps them to accomplish any towing job they come up against.

The vehicles range from a 35-tonne capable Century 7035 capable of recovering vehicles weighing up to 35-tonne to the mighty Peterbilt Rotator, which can turn a complete 360 degrees and lift vehicles of up to 75 tonnes.

Smith says Truckworks strives to be the best towing operator in the state and to do this they ensure they never accept sub-par quality and if any of their services are deemed not good enough, they will gladly re-do them.

“We’re a bit of a show off but we back ourselves up with guarantees,” says Smith.

“It’s a competitive industry and there are other companies out there that take just as much pride in their work as we do in ours”

In terms of the future, Smith says they already have their hands full in SA most of the time and don’t have plans to expand nationally.

However, they do intend to keep doing what they’re doing in South Australia for some time to come yet. Which means delivering high quality towing and repair services and never settling for second best, ever.

Super tray adds more space for tradies

Iveco has announced it will be offering a 4.5m tray and a five year, 250,000km extended warranty on its 45C18 Daily Cab Chassis models as part of a Limited Edition release

Iveco says the the Tradie Made “Super Tray” features a factory-fitted 2218mm W x 4500mm L (internal) heavy-duty aluminium tray, allowing prospective buyers to have their vehicle on the job site and working sooner, rather than waiting weeks for body fitment through a third-party supplier.

It says other benefits of the Australian-made tray include load restraint points, a window protector and tube headboard, rope rails and a corner step.

For easier loading and unloading of equipment and materials, the Super Tray also benefits from two-piece, quick-lock drop sides.

With a payload of approximately 1900kg, the Super Tray is an attractive option for tradies or contractors who may have outgrown their utilities or 4x4s.

The models also offer the convenience of a car licence-friendly 4,495kg GVM and 3.5t braked towing capacity, allowing users to tow a machinery or tool trailer comfortably and legally.

Two new Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Actros models have joined Hannah’s Haulage’s 34-truck strong fleet in Sydney.

The family freight operation says it had a positive experience running a 13-litre 530hp Actros and decided to source two top-of-the-line 16litre 2663s through Joanne Eisel at Daimler Trucks Huntingwood.

Hannah’s Haulage director, Scott Hannah, says the 530hp Actros was doing well across several roles including a run to Maitland as a B-double.

“The 530 has been really good on fuel. As a double, it was doing the same job as a 600hp truck (from a rival brand) between Sydney and Brisbane and was clearly better on fuel,” says Hannah.

“Running as a single, the fuel economy was just exceptional.”

Hannah says he didn’t hesitate when the Daimler Trucks Huntingwood team mentioned it had two 630hp Actros trucks available.

“The warranty on them is excellent

and the servicing is pretty good too. With that, and a competitive price, along with my experience with the 530, it was a pretty easy decision to make,” he says.

The two new Actros 2663s have been put to work running as B-doubles for now, transporting aluminium material for cans to a soft drink producer in Melbourne before carrying a load of full soft drinks cans on the return journey. Soon, the trucks will run as A-doubles to boost productivity.

Hannah says the early signs were good and the 2663s were also getting excellent fuel economy.

Soon after delivery, Hannah took one on an interstate drive.

“I took one for its first run down to Melbourne to pick up a trailer and it was really impressive. I’m not alone there. The guys who drive them just absolutely love them,” says Hannah.

“The quality of the interior and the ergonomics are excellent. The performance is really great as well.”

The two new Mercedes-Benz

trucks feature the new Hannah’s Haulage paint scheme, with brilliant yellow plus black and red highlights that ensure the combinations stand out on the road.

“The yellow is not just the company colour, but also perfect for safety,” says Hannah.

“The stripe on the truck and the trailers really stands out, even in adverse weather. You also notice it, but it is not in your face or over the top.”

Also boosting safety levels are the standard active safety features that have long been at the core of the Actros model says Mercedes-Benz. All Actros models come with the fifthgeneration radar/camera Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) called Active Brake Assist, which can now automatically perform full emergency braking for vehicles and pedestrians.

Mercedes-Benz says all Actros models also come standard with Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Attention Assist (AA).

UD Trucks has enabled one of Australia’s largest chemical companies to operate with maximum efficiency, safety and reliability by deploying the UD Quon in its fleet.

Leigh Smart, owner and director of Formula Chemicals in Sydney, purchased his first UD Quon 18 months ago and says the company has not looked back since.

Smart says that when it came time to buying another truck a year and a half ago, it was essential he found the right truck to continue operations, particularly with transporting dangerous goods safely.

While Formula Chemicals had been exclusively purchasing another Japanese truck brand for 35 years, Leigh reached out to his local UD Trucks dealer after the brand was recommended to him by a friend and was immediately impressed with the professional service and support he received.

“Both the sales manager and sales executive came out here had a

meeting with me,” Smart says. “They showed that much interest in what I was doing and what they could do to help me. I can’t say as much as I possibly can about the service people.”

“They brought out a truck for our drivers and they couldn’t believe it. We’d never get them to go back to the old trucks, no way in the world.”

Penske Australia signs deed to power combat vehicles

A deed of agreement between Penske Australia and Rheinmetall Defence Australia will see Penske deliver the powerpacks for the army’s Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles.

In a deal worth approximately $40 million, more than 100 power packs for the Land 400 Phase 2 Boxer vehicles, consisting of Rolls-Royce Power Systems mtu 8V199 engines and Allison 4800SP transmissions, will be provided for manufacturing.

In addition to the assembly of the powerpacks, the agreement also includes the establishment of local assembly and testing capability, training and the provision of compliance documentation.

Penske Australia’s team of specialist technicians will conduct local assembly and acceptance testing with production to be conducted at Penske Australia’s Wacol, Queensland facility.

“This important agreement builds upon our long-standing history in supporting the Australian Defence Force platforms, both land and sea,” says Penske Australia managing director Hamish Christie-Johnston.

“It’s also a welcome extension of our relationship with Rheinmetall Defence Australia as a key industry capability provider and a member of Rheinmetall’s global supply chain.

Fuso and Volvo fleet help make electric history

Australia’s transition towards zero-emissions heavy vehicles received a major boost in late 2022.

One of Australia’s busiest logistics providers, Global Express, announced a mammoth journey to begin a major vehicle electrification project at its western Sydney depot that will see it make national history.

To complete the project, Global Express has made the largest order

for electric trucks in Australia to date, with 60 battery electric delivery vehicles set to be delivered and deployed alongside the required associated charging infrastructure network.

The vehicles and infrastructure will work in Global Express’s Express Parcels fleet, housed at the western Sydney depot in Bungarribee, New South Wales.

Global Express Group is investing $24.1 million in the project, with another $20.1 million coming from a successful funding bid to the Federal Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

“I’m proud Team Global Express was chosen for this project after an extensive process was undertaken by ARENA, throughout which they have been incredibly supportive,” Global Express Group CEO Christine Holgate says.

“The announcement is a major milestone for our people and our customers.

“This trial will help to reduce our scope 1 emissions profile and that of our customers while giving our valued employees at Bungarribee the opportunity to be trained on charging, driving and optimising the electric vehicles of the future.”

Holgate says the pioneering trial will place Global Express at the forefront of electric vehicle adoption in the Australian logistics sector.

Volvo’s battery-electric trucks will soon be seen on Sydney’s roads

frontrunners for such a massive project.

The $44.3 million project includes the purchase of operation of 24 Daimler Fuso eCanters (light rigid vehicles) alongside 36 Volvo eFLs as medium rigid vehicles alongside associated charging and site infrastructure to enable vehicle integration into the depot.

The carbon reduction project will include the eCanters, which Daimler says is the first electric truck from an OEM in Australia. Daimler says the electric model is also the only electric truck in its class to feature active safety features.

The eCanters will form part of a five-year Global Express electric truck trial alongside the 63 chargers installed on site and a large battery system that will store energy generated by a 400kW/h solar power generation system at the Eastern Creek depot.

Daimler says this project is a great example of carbon-reduction in action in Australia.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Team Global Express for this exciting project, which represents a dramatic step forward on the journey towards zero-emission freight transport in Australia,” Daimler Truck Australia Pacific president and CEO Daniel Whitehead says.

“This ambitious initiative shows what our industry can achieve with positive government policies and agencies like ARENA.

“We have no doubt this groundbreaking project will provide inspiration for many operators in Australia and we’re pleased the Fuso eCanter has been recognised as the

best truck for this role.”

Although this is a historic moment for electric trucks in Australia, Global Express and Daimler already have experience working together. In New Zealand, Global Express is already operating three Fuso eCanter units in its fleet.

The Fuso eCanter is designed for local distribution in high-density urban areas and uses six liquidcooled lithium ion batteries with 82.8kW/h of electricity that feed a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Power output is rated at 135kW, while 390Nm of torque can be delivered the moment the accelerator pedal is pressed.

Daimler says the eCanter is the only electric trucks in its class to include active safety features as standard like Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEMS) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

Daimler says Mercedes-Benz Trucks will begin local validation trials for the fully electric eActros and eEconic models next year, with an initial batch of six test trucks in Australia and two in New Zealand.

It’s not just a major deal for Daimler.

Volvo Trucks says the Global Express order for 36 Volvo electric trucks is the brand’s largest electric truck order to date in Australia.

Volvo says it plans for the trucks to hit the streets of Sydney during the first quarter of 2023. The vehicles are designed for urban distribution and have a load capacity of 5.5 tonnes in this application. Volvo expects this fleet of electric trucks to become a key part of Global Express’s Sydney metro pick-up and delivery fleet.

“It’s clear that more and more transport companies around the world now want to start the journey towards electric, zero-emission transport,” Volvo Group Australia president Martin Merrick says.

“Volvo is first out with heavy electric trucks in Australia and we’re excited to work together with Team Global Express and other customers.

“We have the broadest electric truck line up in the industry, which makes it possible to electrify a large part of heavy transport already today.”

The Volvo order will consist of 36 Volvo FL Electric trucks, which have zero tailpipe emissions and produce less noise than conventional trucks.

Merrick says this benefits drivers and city residents.

The major order helps Volvo reach its company target to have half of its global total sales of new trucks be electric by 2030.

Being the largest logistics EV fleet in Australia, Global Express says it will be in a unique position to share knowledge with government, industry partners and manufacturers.

The logistics company says it’ll use this experience to help all stakeholders towards a greener future for logistics.

“As part of the trial, we will be working closely together to share the knowledge we gain,” Holgate says.

“We look forward to providing this vital information for the benefit of the transport and logistics sector.”

FedEx impacting the world with an average of 16 million shipments a day

An investment of more than $6.8 billion into its own facilities and infrastructure improvements in FY 2022 is only one of many impacts FedEx is having globally.

A new report released on November 28 by FedEx Corporation, in conjunction with business analysts Dun & Bradstreet, has turned the spotlight on the corporation’s impact for the first time, revealing a vast array of impressive statistics.

The report found that FedEx played an integral role in helping businesses recover from the pandemic while overcoming strained supply chains and economic challenges.

With nearly 550,000 employees worldwide, FedEx moved an average of 16 million shipments each day through its 5,000 facilities in FY 2022.

“All around the world, FedEx helped individuals, businesses, and communities emerge from the pandemic by moving goods and providing services that connect us and power the global economy,” says Raj Subramaniam, president and CEO, FedEx Corporation.

“The report illustrates the ongoing and important work we do every day, including supporting smalland medium-sized businesses which are the backbone of our local communities. We call this, the ‘FedEx Effect.’”

The business has certainly come a long way since its launch 49 years ago.

FedEx arrived in Australia in 1989 and now has more than 5,600 employees here.

The company has more than 2,400 vehicles nationally and operates multiple flights in and out of Australia.

In October 2021, FedEx Express Australia announced additional weekly flights from Singapore to Sydney, doubling flight operations between the two countries. It recorded a 22 per cent increase in shipment volume on that route during FY 2022.

“We are continuously strengthening our operations in Australia to ensure we offer our customers the most robust solutions possible to support their needs,” says Peter Langley, vice president of FedEx Express Australasia.

do its bit to help those in need and the report found that in FY 2022 it had donated more than $86 million to charities and local non-profits in the communities where its team members live and work.

It is also working towards a target of carbon-neutral operations by 2040.

In terms of some other fascinating facts to come out of the report:

• FedEx worked with 360,000 suppliers globally who employed more than 16.5 million individuals. These businesses had a combined annual revenue of $700 billion.

• FedEx global economic activity supported 193,000 additional jobs beyond the FedEx worldwide employee base in FY 2022, which is 20,000 more jobs than FedEx indirectly supported in FY 2021.

• Small businesses made up 88 per cent of the FedEx supply chain, and more than half of the FedEx supply chain spend in each region went to small businesses—which collectively supported roughly 810,000 small business jobs around the world.

• I n FY 2022, FedEx invested $6.8 billion—a 15 per cent increase on FY 2021—in facility improvements, network optimisation and infrastructure improvements in the markets it works in.

Migration change goes hand in hand with national licensing reform

The phrase about success having many fathers but failure being an orphan has been attributed to everyone from George Washington to a diplomat relative of Mussolini. I’m not going to guess who can lay claim but it did get me thinking about our chronic driver shortage.

To understand where the solution lies you need to know where the problem started. The pandemic and its economic fallout only exposed a deep-seated problem that’s been around for years.

It’s not that driver standards are lax. It’s more that we’ve allowed a shift to occur over many years where licensing authorities have failed to adopt competency based progression.

There are a few other factors at play, not the least of which is a generational shift where the attractions of spending long hours in a truck aren’t as obvious to young people.

NatRoad has long championed the virtues of our industry doing more to sell its positives to a broad audience.

Road transport was put into the spotlight as an essential service during the pandemic. Let’s take advantage of that and encourage more young people and women to join the ranks.

In the immediate term we also need to look overseas to plug the gaps, but that’s not a silver bullet.

To know why, you need to understand the vagaries of our skilled migration program.

It’s all based on ANZSCO, which is the Australian and New

Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations.

It’s a system that sets the standards for the skills and work experience that visa applicants must meet to work in specific occupation in Australia and New Zealand.

When applying for a General Skilled Migration visa, an overseas driver has to nominate an occupation from the ANZSCO list that’s also present on one of Australia’s skill shortage lists.

An immigration officer assesses an applicant’s work experience and qualifications against the task list and the lead statement of a chosen ANZSCO occupation.

So, an applicant ticks Truck Driver and the doors to a career in Australia magically open, right? Not so fast.

As it stands, Australia’s Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List includes “truck driver (general)” as one of 129 jobs in shortage, but it’s listed at a level called category 4 occupation so does not qualify for direct migration and visa support.

That won’t occur until it’s recategorised to Skill Level Category 3. At the time of writing, moves were afoot to nudge the Federal Government into doing just that.

But that’s only going to be a first step. Not all overseas drivers will be the same and just because someone holds a licence in one country doesn’t mean they’re competent to drive in Australia.

We need an urgent upgrade of heavy vehicle driver licencing across the board to make qualifications and training the priorities over the current “time served” approach.

Austroads – the collective of the Australian and New Zealand transport agencies - recently published a regulatory impact statement aimed at delivering a harmonised Australian license training and assessment framework. This is part of a review that has been going on for many years.

The current licensing framework only covers four jurisdictions: New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and the Northern Territory.

NatRoad has asked Austroads to drop a proposal for post-licence behind-the-wheel supervised training.

We can – and must - do better.

For a heavy vehicle driver to be eligible to apply to progress to a higher licence class, they must hold a licence for a prior vehicle class for a minimum period of one year.

The weakness is that there is often no record of actual driving experience during that period. In effect, actual driving experience is not required.

NatRoad would like a nationally consistent heavy vehicle driver apprenticeship program where progression between HV Licence classes is based on actual driving competency verification rather than time served.

Some states are working on introducing their own solutions but we need a unified approach and sense of urgency.

Reform needs to go hand in hand with change to skilled migration. Then we can address some of the other structural issues holding back homegrown driver recruitment.

There’s ample room for multiple Ministers to claim parentage and thus success. Over to you, ladies and gentlemen of the Federal Ministry.

Big push for heavy vehicle safety projects

The federal government has announced that it will kickstart 27 new projects focused around renewing bridges and improving the overall safety of the heavy vehicle industry

Twenty-seven new projects will be funded under the Bridges Renewal and Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity programs.

The federal government says it is investing more than $39 million for 18 new projects under the Bridges Renewal Program.

This is in addition to an investment of more than $18 million for nine new projects under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP).

The Bridges Renewal Program supports the upgrade of old and worn timber bridges to safer and more durable doublelane, modern concrete structures.

The HVSPP aims to increase the productivity and safety of heavy vehicle operations, with projects funded under the program including widening and improving roads used in freight routes as well as upgrading existing rest stops and building new rest areas for truck drivers.

The federal government says it has committed at least $85 million per year going forward for the Bridges Renewal Program, and at least $65 million per year to the HVSPP.

Net Zero Unit to drive emissions reduction

The federal government says a Net Zero Unit has been established in the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts, to be led by Ian Porter.

The new unit will identify how the infrastructure portfolio can work across government and with industry to help achieve net zero and improve the resilience of Australia’s transport networks and supply chains in the face of increasing extreme weather events.

The unit will support the crossportfolio Net Zero Taskforce that will advise the government on ensuring regional Australians benefit from Australia’s transformation to a renewable energy superpower.

Porter brings significant experience in climate change, energy and sustainability policy, as well as working across government, public service, consulting and the not-for-profit sector – including most recently heading up program delivery for Climateworks.

This builds on important initiatives already underway across the portfolio, including creating a Jet Zero Council to promote sustainable aviation fuels in this country and consulting on fuel efficiency standards for light vehicles to support the National Electric Vehicle Strategy.

This forms part of the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse

gas emissions by 43 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The unit will help advance the government’s emissions commitments by connecting government agencies, industry and climate experts to translate the latest research into action, while ensuring climate expertise is embedded into policies and investments.

“Achieving our government’s emissions reduction targets on the path to net zero by 2050 will require concerted action to drive emissions lower across the transport sector,” federal transport and infrastructure minister Catherine King says.

“We are already helping to achieve this by increasing the uptake of electric vehicles, considering fuel efficiency standards, improving consumer information, promoting alternative aviation fuels and other technologies, and engaging with international partners to reduce shipping emissions.

“Ian Porter brings a wealth of experience that will support the new Net Zero Unit’s critical work to take our transport and infrastructure climate change policy, research and engagement to the next level.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with my department as we facilitate a cleaner, greener era for Australia’s transport and infrastructure sectors.”

In a major move for the nation’s supply chains, Australia Post announced the resumption of inbound international sea mail on November 21.

Sea mail entering Australia from overseas was temporarily suspended from October 1, 2022. Australia Post continued to accept mail that had been sent to Australia by air during the suspension, and there was no impact to outbound items, whether sent by sea or by air.

Australia Post’s Group CEO and managing director Paul Graham says: “We are pleased to once again accept inbound international sea mail. We know that the temporary suspension inconvenienced some of our overseas and local customers and have worked tirelessly to restart the service.”

The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association says any changes to diesel fuel standards would simply be another cost to be borne by the transport industry.

Writing in response to the news of the release of a draft regulation impact statement by the Federal Government the ALTRA says there is

no reason to be making changes.

The ALRTA says the government is seeking views on improvements to Australia’s fuel quality standards, with the impact statement canvassing various options.

The primary focus is on petrol standards to pave the way for the introduction of Euro 6d emissions

• Greater access to more efficient vehicles.

The regulation impact statement has found that a change to the diesel standard is not required, according to the ALRTA.

The association says current standards vary significantly across the globe and Australia’s diesel quality is already very close to the European Union standard.

The ALRTA says there is no evidence of any potential fuel operability issues with Euro 6 trucks in Australia.

The implications of severe weather events on the national, regional, rural and remote road network is at the heart of a new inquiry launched this month by Federal Parliament.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Regional Development, Infrastructure and Transport, chaired by Luke Gosling OAM, MP, will be looking at a range of factors that affect road quality.

“The inquiry will look at road engineering and construction standards to strengthen road resiliency against natural disasters, including the critical role of climate change trends and data to inform infrastructure standards,” Gosling says.

“The Committee is concerned about the increasing deterioration of the nation’s road network, particularly in regional, rural, and remote areas.

“The extreme flooding events and other natural disasters across the nation have impacted many Australians, and the Committee is seeking to understand how road planning and construction may be improved to enhance road climate resiliency and support our communities.”

The committee is seeking written submissions, ideally of no more than 10 pages, from organisations and individuals providing recommendations relating to any or all of the inquiry terms of reference by 28 February 2023.

ATA issues rare safety alert

In a rare move, the ATA has issued a safety alert over abnormal weather patterns

The Australian Trucking Association’s (ATA) Industry Technical Council (ITC) has issued a Safety Alert for truck operators as a response to the abnormal rains that are impacting so many operators and equipment.

The ITC has issued the Safety Alert - Differentials, Driveline, Suspension and Wheel-ends to warn about the impacts of water and road damage. Within hours of the Safety Alert being issued, the ATA says in its weekly newsletter that it received the following feedback:

• “ Very good information and a timely reminder that requires high priority attention in our fleet workshops. This will be tool-boxed nationally within my business.”

• “ That’s a great Safety Alert and something we discuss with our customers as well. Am I able to share this within the team to discuss /share with our customers.”

• This Safety Alert highlights really pertinent information.”

Flooded roads are wreaking havoc on vehicle safety

• “Great alert, great initiative, I will share with many contacts.”

Meanwhile, the ATA says there have been further comments about operating in floodwater and the negative impacts of the extended wet.

Trailer-EBS is also suffering with water ingress into the EBS connectors and contact corrosion.

To counter the fault warnings, the ATA says drivers are disconnecting the system, thus de-powering the EBS system. This is dangerous because it results in no ABS or Roll Stability Control.

The ATA says it’s not easy for operators, especially in a climate of spare parts shortages.

If anyone has images of waterdamaged roads, email them through to the ATA and it will send them to the appropriate government bodies.

“In Victoria, this notice has streamlined access for most of the 1,500 PBS vehicles that meet the requirements to run on the state’s 8,000km High Productivity Freight Vehicle Network,” Petroccitto says.

“The release of the NHVR National Map in the new year will continue to support improved efficiencies and get safer and more productive vehicles on the roads sooner, including the ability for road managers to update gazetted networks in real time.

The HVIA says the NHVR has proposed a series of significant reforms in its long-awaited discussion paper on PBS 2.0

The Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) has responded to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) PBS discussion paper 2.0 and discussed what it means for operators.

The HVIA says the discussion paper outlines the history and the principles underpinning of the Performance Based Standards (PBS) scheme PBS system to date, before outlining the NHVR’s proposed approach to reforming three key areas of the scheme:

• Accelerating the process for reviewing PBS standards to foster innovation

• P roviding greater certainty around access and streamlining the process for transitioning successful PBS designs out of the PBS scheme

• Revising the assurance framework to ensure the integrity of the scheme while reducing the regulatory burden.

HVIA policy and government relations manager Greg Forbes says

“HVIA and its members have been great supporters of the PBS scheme due to the productivity and safety benefits it provides but the scheme is well and truly overdue for some reforms,” Forbes says.

Following the success of its first venture capital fund, Scania Growth Capital I, Scania is now launching a new investment vehicle, Scania Growth Capital II.

The new fund will also be managed by East Hill Equity.

Scania’s new SEK 2 billion venture capital fund, Scania Growth Capital II, will continue its predecessor’s focus on the most attractive companies and entrepreneurs in the B2B tech space.

The objective is to provide a comprehensive investment experience for founding teams. The fund will provide support through an agile and experienced investment team while also providing the access to market and technology expertise of Scania.

Scania Growth Capital was set up in 2016 and invested in nine companies through the Scania Growth Capital I fund. Its funding initiatives include the seed investment in the German unicorn sender GmbH, in 2017. A unicorn is a start-up company with a value of more than $1 billion.

Now that Scania Growth Capital I has been fully deployed, its successor Scania Growth Capital II will invest broadly in B2B tech such as software, products, solutions and services within mobility, connectivity, autonomous, electrification, smart factory and sustainability. It will target entrepreneurial companies with a unique product or service offering in areas where the fund can inject not only capital but bring other added value.

TR Group says the purchase of the business, which went live on December 1, aligns with the group’s nationwide expansion strategy, adding to its existing presence in Melbourne, Brisbane and Newcastle.

“We recognise the importance of the Perth market to Australia and have spent significant time considering the best way for us to enter the market,” TR Group Australia general manager Peter Irwin says.

NHVR prosecutes three directors for primary duty offences

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) says heavy vehicles operated by a scrap metal company that were found to be substantially over mass led to charges against the company and its three directors in Bayswater, Victoria.

After the vehicle was intercepted, investigations into the company revealed that over a 27-month period there were 69 instances of heavy vehicles loaded and operated by the company which exceeded mass limits.

NHVR acting director of prosecutions Elim Chan confirmed the charges.

“The Victorian company has been charged with Category 1, 2 and 3 offences under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). These are the most serious offences available under the HVNL,” Chan says.

In addition, the three directors of the company have also been charged with Category 2 and 3 offences, including charges for failing

to comply with their due diligence obligations as required under the HVNL.

Chan says the primary duties charges have been laid after repeated breaches of the HVNL were identified.

“These charges demonstrate that the NHVR will always consider if executives are complying with their personal obligations to exercise due diligence,” Chan says.

Category 1 offences carry a maximum penalty of $354,639 and up to five years imprisonment for an individual and $3,546,390 for a corporation.

Category 2 offences carry a maximum penalty of $177,321 for an individual and $1,773,210 for a corporation.

Category 3 offences carry a maximum penalty of $59,108 for an individual and $591,080 for a corporation.

The matter will next be heard on February 23, 2023, at Ringwood Magistrates Court.

Changes to road access notices in Queensland are set to assist operators transporting odd-shaped loads

Operators of Class 3 B-doubles, road trains and truck and dog trailer combinations in Queensland are set to benefit from updated road access notices from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).

The NHVR says the notices will provide operators with productivity improvements, as network access

conditions in both notices will remain unchanged.

The first new road access notice is the Queensland Class 3 B-Double and Road Train (Carriage of large Indivisible Items) Dimension Exemption Notice 2022, which came into effect on October 28 and provides dimensional exemptions (height and width) to B-doubles and road

The NHVR says operators should note that pilot and escort conditions on the Warrego Highway between Toowoomba and the Chinchilla Shire boundary have been removed, while the transfer of truck and dog combinations are now included in the mass exemption notice.

In the second Queensland Class 3 Truck and Dog Trailer (exceeding 19m up to 31.5m in length) Mass and Dimension Exemption Notice 2022, dimensional exemptions have been provided to rigid truck and dog combinations.

These combinations must be longer than 19m but no longer than 31.5m and carrying general freight or large indivisible items, with the notice commencing on November 23.

The notice includes higher steer mass limits, an exemption to tow mass ration and the ability to carry indivisible items in addition to divisible items.

New truck wash opens at Gunnedah Regional Saleyards

The NSW government and local council have worked together to open the redeveloped Gunnedah truck wash

A new state-of-the-art truck wash is now in operation at the Gunnedah Regional Saleyards.

The drive-through facility on the Kamilaroi Highway is capable of accommodating vehicles as large as road trains and B-triples and opened on November 21.

The $1.8 million-dollar project was funded by Regional NSW, the Restart NSW Fixing Country Truck Washes Program and Gunnedah Shire Council and has been completed as part of the multi-million-dollar Saleyards’ redevelopment.

Launched as a single funding round in 2016, the Fixing Country Truck Washes Program is a $10 million program joint-funded by the federal and NSW governments.

The program has funded truck wash projects, improving access and efficiency across NSW.

The realignment and modification of Gunnedah’s truckwash allows trucks to move forward into the wash bays and exit from the same direction, making it safer and easier for livestock transporters.

The truck wash was designed following consultation with operators and industry organisations. The feedback and practical ideas received through this process will

ensure it meets the needs of the changing industry.

NSW regional transport and roads minister Sam Farraway says the project highlighted the important role truck washes played in vehicle productivity and maintenance, and in protecting NSW’s biosecurity.

“The upgraded truck wash facility at Gunnedah Regional Saleyards will provide access for all truck operators, including livestock carriers, and has capacity to cater for modern road trains as well,” Farraway says.

“The new truck wash means drivers no longer need to reverse their vehicle to access and use the facility, creating a safer and more efficient wash-down process. Truck washes are essential to reducing the spread of weeds and disease across NSW and I’m pleased to see the new facility opened.”

Gunnedah Shire Mayor Jamie Chaffey says the completion of the truck wash was great news for the livestock industry.

“It’s fantastic to see this new facility now made available to livestock transporters who rely on truck washes to clean their vehicles,” Chaffey says.

“This modern and efficient truck wash is a critical piece of

infrastructure for those who come from around the region to use our Saleyards. Since the introduction of road trains into this region, it’s great to see that transporters now have the ability to wash their vehicles, no matter the size.

“It also means council can continue to ensure animal effluent is managed in accordance with NSW Environment Protection Authority licensing requirements. The new truck wash is just one part of the Saleyards’ redevelopment, and we look forward to seeing the rest of the project unfold.”

In September 2020, the NSW government announced $14 million for the Gunnedah Regional Saleyards Redevelopment. This has been supported by a Gunnedah Shire Council co-contribution of $3.56 million.

Plans for the precinct include a range of upgrades and innovations:

• Construction of a multi-purpose administration building, comprising of office and administration spaces, a café and outdoor dining area and amenities;

• Construction of new workshop sheds;

• I mprovements to infrastructure including gates, fencing, gantries and watering systems;

• I nternal lighting upgrades;

• Construction of off-street car parking for light vehicles and a parking/queuing area for heavy vehicles;

• Technological improvements including Wi-Fi and high-speed internet to facilitate future online sales and other smart technology applications;

• Fenced containment of the site and major security upgrades;

• Upgrades of cattle loading/ unloading ramps; and

• Making the site more self-sufficient through the installation of up to a 50kW solar system and installation of water tanks with the capacity to hold 1,324kl through major stormwater harvesting and reuse facilities.

Inside the calls for a heavy haulage tax increase

A group of local councils in Western Australia recently went live on local ABC radio with calls to raise the tax on heavy haulage companies to compensate for damage to the road network. It sparked fierce debate and many figures in the transport industry have argued against the call. ATN spoke to Western Roads Federation CEO Cam Dumesny about the issue

In early December a group of WA regional councils went public with a call for more compensation from mining and logging companies. The groups want these companies to pay more for the damage their trucks inflict on the government’s roads.

The regional councils point to damage to roads as evidence the revenue they receive is not enough to cover maintenance of the network.

South-West councils announced they will lobby the WA Local Government Association to update guidance on the levy, meaning councils may have the ability to increase charging for road maintenance.

Capel Shire president Doug Kitchen told ABC News that the levy hadn’t been updated for a long time and that they wanted to see less of an impact on ratepayers to maintain roads.

“The price index hasn’t kept up with the reality of road maintenance cost increases,” Kitchen told ABC.

“The Shire of Capel has advocated

for the South-West local government zone to have that reviewed and updated so local governments can have a fairer return on those maintenance upkeep costs.”

Cam Dumesny, CEO of the Western Roads Federation, however, argues that governments, and not industry, should be responsible for covering any extra maintenance costs.

“It’s essentially a government funding problem, not an industry problem or a problem of taxes and levies that are too low,” says Dumesny.

Dumesny, along with other figures in the industry, has pointed out local governments already put levies on extractive industries for road maintenance.

The current government model for road maintenance funding involves two streams of revenue that go from industry to government.

The first is a fuel tax excise that operators pay to the federal government. And the second is heavy vehicle registration fees paid to state governments.

Part of the issue is that though local governments own most of the roads that trucks use, they do not have any direct revenue streams to tap into for road maintenance - they need to rely on the state and federal governments to deliver them that funding.

In Western Australia the Main Roads organisation states that the local road network within Western Australia totals more than 125,500 kms, which amounts to 88 per cent of the total state road network.

Dumesny says a call for higher taxes is just a way for local councils to avoid navigating the somewhat complicated government grant system for extra funding.

“It’s a lot of effort for the councils to submit all the appropriate grant applications, so it seems to them it’s

easier to just introduce a new tax,” says Dumesny.

There are 138 local governments in Western Australia and Dumesny says the Western Roads Federation works well with most of them. He argues that these local governments that are making the calls for higher taxes are in the minority.

“We already pay our fair share, if local government doesn’t have enough funding they should go and sort it out with their state and federal government colleagues,” says Dumesny.

Dumesny says the transport industry operates under a lot of pressure at the best of times. Any increased taxes could potentially put even more financial pressure on these companies forcing them to question whether it would be worth operating in the long run or not.

He says the call for higher taxes could in fact end up coming back to hurt these local governments because it could potentially decrease

their revenues if local businesses are forced to close as their transport costs become unviable.

Akin to biting the hand that feeds you – less jobs means less ratepayers in their regional areas.

“They should be in the business of encouraging economic activity, not discouraging it,” says Dumesny.

There’s another underlying issue to the problem of government road maintenance and that is the quality of the roads in the first place.

People who work in the transport industry know that road quality can be inconsistent in Australia, particularly in rural areas. Heavy vehicles having to navigate damaged roads has been an issue in many states, not just WA.

Dumesny argues that if governments had invested more in the road network to begin with and built it to a higher standard so it could sustain use by heavy vehicles there wouldn’t be a need to raise more funding.

“It’s like buying a car, you can buy

a cheap truck, but it won’t last long. If you pay more for better truck, it lasts longer. It’s the same with roads, there was never the appropriate investment there,” says Dumesny.

“Road quality has always been a common complaint in the Western Australian transport industry”

The Western Australian economy relies on commodities and the transport of commodities around the state with heavy vehicles that pull very heavy loads and as a result can cause damage to roads that are not built properly.

“We’re a commodity trading state and that relies on a quality road network,” says Dumesny.

Dumesny emphasises, however, the fact that the transport industry shouldn’t be punished for improper government investments.

“We work well with a number of local governments and support their initiatives,” says Dumesny. “We’re open to talking to them but we’re not paying any more.”

Browns Stockfeed started life in 2003 when the two Brown brothers Chris and Cameron founded the company together. Based in Leongatha in south-west Victoria, Browns Stockfeed transports a range of agricultural products such as fertiliser and grain. Its main clients are dairy farmers.

The company started out with just one truck, one mill, a transport yard, and three employees.

across five sites across Victoria, including three mill sites, a retail farm supplies store and a workshop.

Chris says the knowledge and professional service Browns offers customers helps them stand out from other operators in regional Victoria.

“We provide a high-quality service and good nutritional advice. Our grain helps the farmers keep their cows happy and producing milk which in turn means profits for them,” says Chris.

“Our sales team are nutritionists

who are able to formulate rations for our clients that we process and deliver.”

Farming and transport is familiar territory for the Brown brothers. They grew up on a farm in Kongwak not far from Leongatha and their parents also ran a small transport company.

The pride and joy of Browns Stockfeed is their impressive trucks, painted in the company’s red and white colours. The trucks recently took out the Best Fleet award at the Castlemaine truck show in central Victoria. Chris says the company had shopped around a bit in the past with trucks, but now the fleet is exclusively Kenworths.

“The Kenworth fleet with their Cummins engine are good, reliable trucks. We don’t have too many issues with them, they go very well, and our local dealership looks after us,” says Chris.

delivered on time every time. So, it’s important that the trucks are never off the road for too long when there is a problem.”

Chris says there are other benefits to maintaining a high-quality fleet as well.

“Having a nice fleet that’s well presented definitely helps to attract good drivers,” says Chris.

“We don’t turn a lot of staff over. We tend to keep our drivers happy and work with them for a while.”

Having been in the business for nearly 20 years, Browns Stockfeed has seen a lot of change in the industry.

The company has been an early adopter of technology for its truck fleet, and Chris says they started using electronic work diaries (EDMs) and telematic monitoring systems several years ago.

“Our managers can tell clients instantly exactly where every truck is and how soon they can expect their deliveries,” says Chris.

“It’s made life across the whole business a lot easier. Not only can we see everything that’s happening, but our drivers know when they need to take a break.

Carting grain to farmers mean that the Browns Stockfeed fleet are operating on rural road networks most of the time and so they are limited in how much they can carry.

The fleet has recently been experimenting with different PBS combinations to maximise their efficiency.

“A 30-metre road train is just not viable in the areas we service,” says Chris.

Browns has found the manoeuvrability and payload capacity of a truck and dog combination works well for farming applications.

Browns’ success can be attributed to its commitment to high quality in all aspects of its business, be that high quality equipment, knowledgeable nutritionists or capable drivers that are trusted to do their job the way

they see fit. Browns says it doesn’t skimp on investing in its people and vehicles.

“It’s about attracting good drivers. Our drivers are always the face of the company,” says Chris.

Though they have already had a great run with 19 years under their belt, Chris says they’re just getting started and have plans to continue expanding across the state.

In a step towards diversifying the business, Browns has just purchased a new mill site for manufacturing pellets in central Victoria.

“To be manufacturing pellets ourselves is a big game changer for us,” says Chris.

Though the company is relatively young it’s clear it has a big future ahead of it.

“It takes a lot of the anxiety out of the job for them.”

Aneetha de Silva has been elected as president of Roads Australia (RA) at the organisation’s AGM in Sydney last week and will lead the next phase of RA’s modernisation.

De Silva is currently managing director of government Australia & New Zealand at Aurecon and has served as an RA board director for five years, including the past two years as vice president.

RA says she is a respected infrastructure executive with more than 25 years’ experience in both the government and private sectors in Australia, South Africa and the Asia Pacific.

As she assumes the presidency, de Silva is committed to ensuring RA plays a proactive leadership role

driving the transport infrastructure sector’s move to decarbonise and in addressing workforce culture issues and stereotypes that currently impede its ability to attract a larger, more diverse talent pool.

“As Roads Australia’s first woman president, I’m excited about the opportunity to lift collaboration to address the local and global challenges we face, and increase the diversity of our sector,” de Silva says.

In a statement, Hyundai says the focus of the appointments is to bolster future business capabilities while allowing the group to better manage global economic uncertainties. Hyundai also established a Global Strategy Office (GSO) to lead future mobility strategy.

Luc Donckerwolke, executive vice president and chief creative officer (CCO) of Hyundai Motor Group has been promoted to president.

Donckerwolke will continue to strengthen the identities of each of the group’s mobility brands - Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis – through leading the group’s advance design and concept model design.

Donckerwolke has led the group’s creative projects such as Genesis House New York and customer experience for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).

“I am very honoured by this new responsibility. I would like to thank the group for the trust it has shown in me, and I recognise the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis design teams for their consistently outstanding performance,” Donckerwolke says.

The GSO will be responsible for establishing the Group’s future mobility strategy with regards to software, hardware and mobility services. GSO will have a decisionmaking body composed of experts in each field for timely and consistent implementation of strategies.

In the meantime, president of the Strategy Planning Division, Young Woon Kong; President of Innovation Division, Youngcho Chi; and President and CEO of Hyundai Glovis Jung-Hoon Kim will now take the role of advisors.

HVIA welcomes new chief technical officer

Adam Ritzinger has taken on the role of Chief Technical Officer with the Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA).

The HVIA announced the new appointment in its Talk the Torque newsletter and says Ritzinger brings with him “a wealth of knowledge as an experienced and accomplished mechanical engineer embedded in

Australia’s heavy vehicle transport industry”.

“He is a passionate trucking and transport enthusiast who understands trucks, the regulations they operate under and the stakeholders that influence the transport industry at all levels,” the HVIA says.

Ritzinger started in his new role in December.

Advanced fatigue management for work diaries

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has approved the inclusion of Advanced Fatigue Management (AFM) rulesets into the Teletrac Navman and Hubfleet Electronic Work Diary (EWD) systems.

Teletrac Navman has integrated the AFM digital rulesets for oil and gas industry service provider Savanna Energy Services into its EWD, and Hubfleet for civil infrastructure company WDC Equipment & Contracting.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says this was the first time AFM rulesets have been approved in EWDs and it demonstrates the flexibility of this modern technology to meet operators’ individual business needs.

“We are committed to working with industry and technology providers to support the uptake of fatigue safety management options,” Petroccitto says.

“Through AFM, we want to help drivers rest when they are tired and drive when they’re fit – and EWDs allow drivers to record exactly what they do.

“There has been an increase in drivers using EWDs, with the benefits EWDs offer companies and drivers becoming increasingly understood and welcomed by many in the heavy vehicle road transport industry.

“We expect the inclusion of these first two AFM rulesets will provide the impetus for other AFM operators to request the customisation of EWDs.

“The NHVR is also undertaking work to make AFM more accessible by breaking down the barriers to participation and providing greater tools and resources to support industry.”

Australian senator Glenn Sterle has been announced as the chair of the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Committee.

After buying his first truck at age 20, Sterle says he understands the needs of Australian truck drivers.

The committee comes after the federal government delivered an additional $80 million in its first budget for new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas.

The committee, led by Sterle, will steer through the process and allow truckies to have their voice on future projects funded by the initiative.

“As a former truck driver with more than 40 years’ experience and who still drives trucks to raise money for charity, it’s an honour to be invited

by the assistant infrastructure and transport minister Carol Brown to chair the government’s Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Steering Committee,” Sterle says.

“A key aspect of the steering committee will be the membership of long-haul truckies, with their input being crucial.

“Never before have truck drivers been consulted like this, and I’m very proud that the Albanese government has delivered on this commitment. I’m looking forward to getting to work!”

The federal parliament has passed the High Speed Rail Authority Bill 2022, an important first step in the federal government’s commitment to establish the High Speed Rail Authority that will guide the development of a high speed rail network in Australia.

The federal government says a highspeed rail network along the east coast of Australia will be a transformational project that has the ability to touch the lives of all Australians.

The Authority will provide independent and impartial advice on the policy and standards of high speed rail; and plan, identify and secure corridors.

The Authority will also oversee the construction and operation of the highspeed rail network, and coordinate with state and territory governments, industry, business and communities to enhance Australia’s long-term rail investment.

The Authority will build on previous work, including the comprehensive study, commissioned under former Infrastructure Minister and now Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, that found high speed rail was not only viable, but would return more than $2 for every $1 of investment.

The Authority will be overseen by a Board which will include experts from the rail and infrastructure sectors.

Faster rail will continue to be advanced under the Authority, with the functions of the National Faster Rail Agency being undertaken within the Authority and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

The federal government says high speed rail will revolutionise interstate travel on the east coast, providing a fast alternative for people to move between cities and regional centres, promoting sustainable settlement patterns and creating broad economic benefits for regional centres.

Coles digitalises supply chain with world first Internet of Things solution

Australian supermarket giant Coles has digitalised its supply chain with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, deploying a world first solution from Loscam and Thinxtra to monitor the location of and measure shock for 4,500 smart food bins moving poultry between farms and its distribution centre.

Coles last year announced a major digital transformation strategy, which includes increasing the resilience of its critical supply chains, such as the Protein Cold Chain, responsible for sourcing and stocking poultry.

The goal was to reduce the number of food bins it loses, understand whether and where these assets are being damaged, improve pooling of equipment for transit, and ultimately increase stock turnaround.

Following a competitive tender, Coles partnered with Loscam, which was the only company to propose an innovative IoT solution. Coles subsequently deployed 4,500 smart and foldable food bins manufactured by Loscam and fitted these with Internet-connected devices.

The devices communicate location data in real time using Thinxtra’s national, public 0G Network. This information is available to the supermarket via LoscamOnline, a specialised tracking platform.

The combined IoT solution has enabled a connected and transparent supply chain with timely insights into geolocation, geofencing, shock impact events, temperature, and bin status, and allows Coles to optimise transport routes and equipment pooling based on usage patterns.

“The smart food bins ensure that

we can track the poultry from the moment they are loaded by our suppliers at farms, right through to the time they reach our distribution centre, reinforcing our food safety standards, while saving time and minimising waste,” says Coles general manager of national meat processing Larry Kavanagh.

“We partnered with Loscam to deploy a purpose-built device and portal system with Thinxtra connectivity, tailored to the specific needs of our Protein Cold Chain department, giving us full visibility into our supply chain operations in real time. This is a crucial step to retain our customer-focused, qualitydriven service that’s reflected in our supermarkets.”

Loscam and Thinxtra’s IoT solution provides data for each individual smart food bin, rather than just the trucks transporting them. Coles can therefore view the location of each individual asset in transit and receive alerts when food bins aren’t where they should be and any time there is

an impact, including when bins are mishandled.

This reduces unnecessary damages and creates accountability for stock quality supported by reliable real-time data.

In addition, the ability to monitor asset performance, including temperature levels, creates assurance for the quality of food. This plays a major role in eliminating waste, and helps Coles maintain safe conditions during transit with the lowest possible energy consumption to support its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) objectives.

The innovative combination of foldable food bins and IoT technology reduces the cost of the asset pool required by 25 per cent, tripling the amount of empty bins returned, reducing cost and waste.

Penalties hiked for NSW over height trucks

Truck drivers will now face tougher penalties for entering Sydney tunnels in an over height truck in a bid to minimise disruptions to New South Wales’s busy road network and keep commuters moving.

There were 40 over height trucks detected in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel alone in 2022, almost double the number in 2021.

NSW metropolitan roads minister Natalie Ward says the NSW government was increasing the penalties following a recent spike in the number of incidents of over height trucks wreaking havoc on the state’s roads.

“The vast majority of truck drivers do the right thing, but for those who

refuse to obey multiple warning signs and drive over height vehicles into our tunnels, this should serve as a strong message that this has to stop,” Ward says.

“The fine for over height trucks will now increase from $3740 to $5,500, which is the maximum penalty that can be applied for a road rule offence.”

Ward says the government is also doubling the suspension period for a driver licence to up to six months and increasing the demerit points from six to 12.

“Our government is committed to keeping Sydneysiders moving and ensuring they spend less time in traffic and more time with family and friends, and doing the things

they love,” Ward says.

NSW regional roads and transport minister Sam Farraway says truck drivers had an obligation to check their vehicles and their loads.

“The many truck drivers who obey the rules rely on our roads to put food on the table, which is why we need to do everything we can to protect their livelihoods,” Farraway says.

“I would encourage all drivers to plan their trips to ensure they don’t break the rules and to pay attention to the signage which gives them ample warning.

“We will work with industry to ensure the rules are clear and drivers are educated about their responsibilities.”

Renault electric trucks to help Coca-Cola make Belgium deliveries

Renault trucks being prepared to go to work Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners says it will start using 30 electric trucks to make last mile deliveries to local customers in Belgium.

The first five vehicles will go out in the Antwerp area. Through a key partnership with Renault Trucks, the beverage manufacturer is electrifying one-fifth of its truck fleet and creating the largest fleet of electric trucks in Belgium.

The company will also reduce its CO2 emissions by 75 per cent compared to diesel trucks.

“Our industry is facing difficulties that require rapid adaptation, but we are also firmly committed to maintaining a long-term approach. Investing in electric trucks will allow Coca-Cola Europacific Partners to cut CO2 emissions by 30 per cent across the entire value chain by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2040,” says An Vermeulen, vice president and country director of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners for Belgium and Luxembourg.

The first five Renault Trucks E-tech D and D Wide will go out in

the Antwerp area, and other trucks will arrive in the coming months at the manufacturing and distribution sites in Ghent and Chaudfontaine in Belgium.

“Most of our deliveries are very local, to supermarkets and businesses near our sites, with routes averaging 150 km per day,” says An Vermeulen.

“The transition to electric vehicles makes perfect sense, thanks to a total investment of around seven million euros. This is one example of our efforts to take a long-term and sustainable approach at the local level in Belgium.”

Optimized local routes

Coca-Cola chose a configuration allowing Renault Truck’s electric vehicles to cover 200 km daily, which is more than enough for 40 per cent of CCEP’s current local delivery routes. Each truck has an on-site charging station to fully recharge the battery overnight. These charging stations are powered by 100 per cent green energy generated at the site.

Renault Trucks to select the right trucks and create the best loading conditions for this local use:

“We carefully analysed Coca-Cola’s logistics data, produced realistic route simulations, and carried out tests under real conditions that looked at energy consumption as well as driver comfort and safety,” says Siegfried Van Brabandt, managing director of Renault Trucks Belux.

“The trucks are also equipped with 360 degree camera systems to eliminate blind spots, a loudspeaker to warn pedestrians and cyclists, and a clear door for optimal visibility on the passenger side.”

The 30 electric trucks being rolled out this year are just a first step for CCEP.

“We will keep taking steps to decarbonise our fleet until 2030 while continuing to study market developments to determine the future of our fleets by considering parameters such as covering longer distances, vehicle autonomy, and heavier loads,” says An Vermeulen.

The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has extended its congratulations to the Victorian government for winning a third term and urged haste in fixing the State’s roads.

“We look forward to continuing our proactive and constructive relationship with the Premier and his new ministry when it is announced and working in the interests of members and the broader freight industry to achieve policy and regulation that creates positive productivity, sustainability, and safety outcomes for members,” says VTA CEO Peter Anderson.

“Now that the election has been run and won, and caretaker conventions are no longer in place, it is imperative that the government rapidly accelerate plans to repair the state’s battered road and rail transport networks, which have been devastated by recent floods.

“While it is encouraging that Regional Roads Victoria has announced the start of works, additional funds announced by the Premier before the election writs were issued will not be enough to fully reinstate damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure.”

The VTA says it has a long and proud history of working with political parties of all persuasions to attain policy that benefits our industry. It’ll look to continue doing the same with this Victorian government.

“Given the financial enormity of the task ahead – which we maintain will cost up to $1 billion – plans should include consultation with the Commonwealth about joint federalstate state funding to fast-track what will be a mammoth infrastructure repair and reinstatement program,” Anderson says.

“Over the coming term of government there will be many priorities other than infrastructure we will be strongly advocating for given the impacts of labour shortages, high inflation and rising fuels costs on freight operators.”

Roads Australia (RA) has welcomed the appointment of the Victorian government’s new cabinet.

RA says the new cabinet will better promote the integration of transport and planning portfolios into a single department.

The body says this integration will be especially advantageous in creating more liveable communities.

“RA is delighted that we will continue to have the opportunity of working with the Deputy Premier, Jacinta Allan, as the minister for transport and infrastructure and minister for the Suburban Rail Loop,” says RA CEO Michael Kilgariff.

“The Deputy Premier has always been willing to engage positively with RA, and her deep understanding of the portfolio is incredibly valuable to industry participants. We look forward to continuing to work closely with her as the Victorian government’s significant project pipeline of transport projects is delivered.

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has welcomed the recommendations of the independent review of Infrastructure Australia (IA), which will strengthen governance arrangements and support improved visibility and prioritisation of the project pipeline.

ARA CEO Caroline Wilkie says the report’s recommendations would improve visibility and certainty for industry.

“We are pleased to see recommendations that will improve pipeline certainty and national consistency to drive better outcomes for both government and industry,” Wilkie says.

“A streamlined Infrastructure Priority List will ensure resources can be better focused on the projects that can have the biggest impact on the economy, community and our way of life over time.”

Wilkie says the review’s recommendation to establish a Charter of Infrastructure Investment Objectives and refine the IA product suite to support these objectives and inform budget planning would deliver greater certainty for the sector.

She also welcomed recommendations to develop a national planning and assessment framework and provide greater clarity on the definition of projects of national significance.

“We are facing a once in a generation infrastructure boom and it is critically important that we have the right planning and processes in place to make the most of the opportunities that come with that,” Wilkie says.

The ARA also welcomed the review’s recommendation to improve the governance model for IA, to be led by three Commissioners and an advisory board.

The Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) is officially extending its research and expertise across all modes of transport with the launch of the National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) for Australia and New Zealand

NTRO was officially launched on December 1 in Melbourne, with more than 250 people from across the industry attending.

The NTRO will create the new knowledge that will be used to provide world’s best practice across all modes of transport – road, rail, ports and airports – for Australia and New Zealand.

ARRB has more than 60 years’ experience in the road space which will underpin the new NTRO entity and will continue to lead the way in road research.

But ARRB has been transformed over the past five years to have a genuine focus across all modes of transport, at the same time that Australia and New Zealand’s road agencies have transformed themselves into transport agencies with a holistic view of movement.

The Australasian Centre for Rail Innovation (ACRI) formally became part of ARRB in mid-2022 and will lead the NTRO’s rail focus.

NTRO Ports and NTRO Airports have also been established for those disciplines.

“NTRO will truly be the one source of truth for Australia and New Zealand governments and the private sector, delivering solutions to the transport challenges of tomorrow and genuinely shaping our transport

future,” ARRB and NTRO CEO Michael Caltabiano says.

“NTRO’s vision is to enable transport agencies to give effect to that change, by providing that central portal for innovation in Australia and New Zealand. It’s a big vision, and a pretty lofty goal – but we’re up for it.”

As well as its Melbourne headquarters, the NTRO also has offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, and Perth. This makes the organisation truly national and reflective of a mode-agnostic road, rail, ports and airports organisation.

Leaders from around the transport industry attended the function, including Victorian Department of Transport secretary Paul Younis and Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) chief executive Matt Pinnegar, who were among the guest speakers at the launch function.

ARRB’s transition to the NTRO signals an evolution from a roadsfocused entity to one encompassing Australia’s entire transport network.

As well as the many innovative projects ACRI is involved with, ARRB’s Infrastructure Measurement team is already working in the airports space. It is involved in surveying airport runways around Australia, including many in Western Australia.

Red tape busted to encourage tradies to travel

As of December 1 workers licensed in other Australian states in fields such as plumbing, gasfitting, driving instruction, architecture, surveying, and bus driving will be able to work straight away in NSW.

The only criteria to be met, is that workers must notify NSW regulators before starting work.

Treasurer Matt Kean says the changes will ensure qualified and registered tradies from participating states can work in NSW sooner, supporting a more timely response to future natural disasters and addressing critical labour shortages.

“We’re making it easier and cheaper for interstate chippies, plumbers, and brickies to come to NSW and help with the flood recovery effort,” Kean says.

“The NSW and Commonwealth Governments committed more than $3.5 billion to rebuild homes, businesses and infrastructure in flood-affected regions.

“And we’re also making it cheaper for local tradies wanting to work in these communities.”

The exemption from having to apply for a NSW licence, or pay additional registration or renewal fees, is part of a national move to boost the mobility of skilled workers across borders under the Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) scheme.

Minister for Small Business and Fair Trading Victor Dominello says the NSW Government worked closely with industry to ensure proper protections for tradies and their customers.

“Recognising interstate registrations will boost skills and provide greater competition, which can deliver more choice, lower prices and improved service quality for consumers,” Dominello says.

“For tradies – many of whom are small business owners – it will reduce the administration costs of running and growing their businesses and

will allow them to move to where the work is.”

Member for Albury Justin Clancy says local tradies and the cities, towns, and communities along the NSW-Victorian border would benefit from the cut to red tape.

“We cross the Murray River every day for our business and personal lives – automatic mutual recognition of trades just makes sense,” he says.

“Floods have had a devastating impact on many farmers, businesses and residents in our region and this new level of cooperation between states to remove additional fees and fast track tradies to work on both sides of the border could not come at a better time to help people and businesses get back on their feet.”

The digital radio station he imagined, with Australia’s truck drivers in mind, launched onto the world wide web with its website, android and apple Apps providing truck drivers with access to nonstop music, news and entertainment capable of following them across borders.

The digital focus solved the age-old problem faced by drivers travelling long distances who were previously left to scan the radio waves constantly as they rolled along to find the strongest local signal to listen to.

For the Australian Truck Radio listener, it’s a case of locking the station in once and letting it run.

Smith says the station’s music mix is wide, eclectic and constantly evolving to meet the requests of its audience and limit repetition as much as possible.

He says with drivers locked on for hours on end as they traversed the long highways of Australia the station aimed to become part of the journey – another voice around a virtual campfire where truckies across the land shared the same experience at the same time.

Adding to the camaraderie of journey, Australian Truck Radio now has a 24/7 text line on 0401 912 255 to complement the australiantruckradio.com.au website and facebook page.

Smith says listeners are encouraged to share their feedback, news, anniversaries, birthdays, and song requests with the station to be included in future programming and shout outs.

Moving into 2023 he says the station will be boosting its line-up of interviews and podcasts, including regular conversations with the team from Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds.

Another highlight is sure to be the Australia Day weekend Truckie’s Top 500 countdown – with Australian Truck Radio collecting song suggestions now.

Summing up the ride so far Smith says he couldn’t be happier.

“It’s been sensational, the response,” he says. “I had a text this morning from a listener - `loving the new station, loving the music’ – that’s what it’s all about.”

There’s no hiding the passion for radio in Smith’s voice as he notes that just like the trucking industry the station simply doesn’t stop and it’s ready to serve.

“We listen to you, because you listen to us”.

A new colour scheme added a stand-out look to the fleet of LJ and Mary Qureshi when they celebrated the arrival of their daughter and signed up for the last Freightliner Coronado to be sold in Australia

Save the Best for Last’ is a line heard in various situations. For those with bad taste in music and old enough to remember cassette players this line may invoke memories of an old Vanessa Williams song from the ’90s. For those of us with younger siblings it tends to invoke memories of the only witty retort available to the baby of the family during childhood fights. In today’s little story though we are using this line in an extremely literal way.

What you have on the pages before you is the last of the Freightliner Coronados sold in Australia, the bonneted workhorse of the Freightliner fleet for pretty much two decades.

The first generation Coronado was launched in the US in 2001 with production starting in 2002.

The second generation came around a decade later and now, another decade down the track, the Coronado has been retired with the arrival of the all-new Cascadia.

In those 20 years there has been some cool looking Coronados, both here and around the world. However, LJ and Mary Qureshi

of Sydney-based L&M Bulk Logistics who snapped up the last ever Coronado sold in Australia, have produced arguably the best example of this classic North American truck.

As if pairing the final Coronado with the coolest Coronado wasn’t enough of a hook for a writer like me, what makes this story even cooler is the small family company that are responsible for this work of art – L&M Bulk Logistics.

If the L&M name isn’t familiar and the colours aren’t familiar, don’t beat yourself up. If you think it’s just a new company making a splash with its new colours, then you can beat yourself up. The truth is LJ and Mary Qureshi, the lovely folk behind L&M Bulk Logistics, have been in the industry for more than 10 years now.

LJ has been running trucks since he first bought two-tonne Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and left school to start his own business. Mary has been working in logistics sales since well before she married young LJ and they formed L&M Bulk Logistics.

The thing is, both LJ and Mary have placed huge importance on the foundations of business – building a reliable service, growing

solid relationships with their customers and generally flying below the radar. This new truck though, the last Coronado, is a massive move in the opposite direction.

It is extremely hard to fly below the radar when your new truck garners more attention than a 50 per cent-off sale at Truckers Toy Store. So why has this humble trucking couple suddenly changed tack? It’s not like L&M are running old bangers. All their other trucks may just be plain white, but they still carry the shine and pride that LJ has had since day dot. It is just this truck is different because of one very simple and beautiful reason. Her name is Zara, LJ & Mary’s first child. Before we get to Zara and her influence on LJ and Mary, we need to go back and understand how L&M Bulk Logistics came about.

The challenge of business

LJ is literally the driving force behind the company. Yet driving has not always been his main motivation. LJ was born and bred in Sydney though his transport lineage is anything but trucks. His family work primarily on huge ship deconstruction and his father was a pilot. If you look at it

holistically the family has covered air and sea, so it does seem fitting that LJ should cover the land side of the trio.

Trucks themselves were never the main motivator for LJ. For him it was the challenge of business.

“I never liked big trucks in the very beginning,” LJ admits. “I loved business, I loved the business idea. You get told where you’ve got to go, you deliver your load, keep it all safe and get a signature.”

I’m suddenly seeing the kind of person that buys all those company simulation games for their PlayStation. However, it wasn’t just the formalities that appealed to LJ though. It was the idea of building a business.

“Providing great customer service, keep your customers happy … that’s what I liked,” he says.

LJ’s first touch of the transport industry came about with the Sprinter that he used to deliver plants and produce around Sydney. “You could only transport three pallets on there,” LJ recalls. “I used to transport anything from local markets to local fruit shops. I used to do newspapers and stuff and a lot of it was hand unload.”

was happy to go door knocking for work and was intent on proving himself, not just as a businessman but as a driver as well. Right from the start LJ’s savvy business acumen was evident.

“My number one goal was to have lots of clients; I didn’t want to have all my eggs in one basket. That’s not only the transport industry but any industry will have ups and downs and you need to have your business flowing. To keep your drivers, gear and bills paid you need constant work.

“When some customers are quiet there are others to keep going.” LJ says. He adds that

retaining those clients comes down to doing the job well, being reliable and dependable.

It was this approach to building his business that saw LJ move from the two-tonne tray truck up to an 8X4 Scania in no time. Those were soon joined by another couple of local trucks as he picked up more contracts from his customers.

Along with getting bigger trucks LJ also found himself having to accrue a few more licenses as well so he could do the work. Car licence to MR, MR to HR, HR became HC and finally MC. With the work came more work and then drivers and more licenses. It was all just a snowball effect.

The other growing obsession was that truck addiction we all suffer from. Building a solid business may have been the initial driving force but that love of all things trucks soon materialised as well. In 2015 he bought his first big truck.

While he admitted at the beginning it was the business side of things that motivated him rather than trucks themselves, LJ says he’s always loved seeing the big B-double units. “In 2015 I thought, ‘well, I could maximise my freight capacity, haul more and earn more’.”

At the time he didn’t have any customers that necessarily needed that much freight moved but he backed himself to find the work, provide the service and get the job done. Turns out he was right.

By 2019 LJ was running 15 B-double units. There was a mixture of badges in the fleet –Scania, Volvo, Kenworth and, of course, the Freightliner badge.

“My first big one was an older Freightliner, an Argosy with a Cat in it, 110-inch with TV,

microwave and everything. I bought it off a guy that had had it since new. It never broke down, never did an engine. I never even touched the clutch in it,” LJ says. “I don’t know if I was lucky but it was a good truck.”

With that kind of experience it would come as no surprise that Freightliners are a common sight in the fleet. In fact, after the performance of the original second-hand Argosy, it is fitting that LJ’s first brand new trucks were another couple of Argosys.

After the addition of those two new Freightliners, the fleet grew steadily. It was a self-fulfilling conundrum. As more trucks were added LJ found he kept picking up more work.

Throughout the growth of the company however it would still have been difficult for anyone outside LJ’s customers to recognise him or his trucks, which is the way he wanted it.

As I mentioned, LJ’s priorities have always been about building a solid business but flying below the radar. Hence, if you are a regular on the east coast highways there is a high possibility that you have passed one or more of LJ’s trucks on the road. You would never know it though.

Customer focused

Back in the early days, even after he married Mary and they rebadged the company L&M Bulk Logistics, LJ has kept his trucks extremely low key. But it’s not like he hasn’t taken pride in his trucks. They may have been plain but they are kept immaculate.

Instead, the money has gone on the business, maintenance, servicing and looking after his drivers. LJ's focus has been on ensuring the trucks do the job and are reliable, keeping his customers happy and his business solid. Until now and the last ever Coronado, that is.

Now don’t get me wrong, the reliability and maintenance of his equipment is still the overriding motivator. Keeping his customers happy and his drivers content is still paramount. It is just the plain ‘below-theradar’ approach to his business was put on the shelf after the arrival of Zara.

“A child changes you,” says Mary. “And Zara definitely changed him.”

One of those changes was LJ finally allowing himself to indulge. “Since I’ve had trucks I had always wanted to have my own design,” LJ explains. “I wanted to have my own creation” The birth of Zara was the inspiration

that allowed for the birth of this stunning truck.

The first step was the choice of truck. With the reliable history LJ had with the Freightliner brand, it was no surprise that Stillwell Trucks at Milperra in Sydney (now known as Daimler Trucks, by the way) was his first port of call. LJ spoke to the Stillwell team and ordered what would turn out to be the last ever new Coronado sold in Australia.

There was a fair bit of time spent working with Stillwell as well as the design team at TopStart Trailers in Dandenong, Melbourne, to build the perfect combination for L&M Bulk Logistics’ needs. Once all the designs and dimensions had been achieved, the next part was back in the hands of LJ and Mary to work out the design of the unit.

Although it was LJ’s dream, it was a truck designed by the family, for the family.

Zara’s influence and inspiration is evident in the Z-lines on both the truck and the matching trailers, as well as the custom cut-out on the front bar. Mary’s influence is evident in the bold colour choice. “I loved black and gold but obviously we couldn’t really do gold so we went with yellow,” Mary explains.

The couple spent hours hashing out different designs and patterns for the unit.

Mary laughs as she recalls, “LJ would keep going out in the sun with his colour palettes to see which yellow looked the best in different light.”

Mary’s love of the black and gold/yellow combination paired well with LJ’s love of the black and chrome idea. Once the colours and lines were settled on, LJ was free to add the shiny bits to wherever his creative mind desired. Working in conjunction with the guys from TopStart Trailers, subtle stainless added to the likes of the landing legs, the back wall and the toolboxes. It wasn’t just the trailers though; LJ ticked a lot of the boxes for the crew at Stillwell before the truck was sent to Hy Shyne Customs in the Sydney suburb of Narellan for its bling. They added plenty of stainless steel with the likes of the drop visor, the sleeper trim and even the stainless bug deflector.

It was a mammoth task considering the truck and its trailers were being built 1000 kilometres away from each other. The trailers were designed specifically for this one last Coronado and everything was measured to match.

LJ and Mary both had a say in the stunning colours and design of the last Coronado

off by the talented team at Fleetmark. They added the signwriting as well as the more personal touches. The first of those is the outstanding image on the back of the A-trailer wall – the cool ‘All In’ graphic.

“I did the All In bit because that’s how I see this truck,” LJ explains. “It’s my all-in approach to business. It also represents the fact I have played my cards right. We don’t take shortcuts, we back ourselves, we go all in.”

Along with that personal message there is also a slogan added to the front – ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’. It seems a more ominous message for a truck dedicated to their daughter, but it represents a very important chapter in the L&M Bulk Logistics story.

Like any feelgood movie there is always a part where the bad guy gets one over the good guy, before the good guy cowboys-up and overcomes adversity. LJ and Mary had that when they trusted in a partnership that left them hanging. However, they survived, rebuilt and they learnt. They also took that lesson and added it to the front of their flagship truck as a message and an example of resilience and determination for their daughter.

Shining bright Obviously, we can’t talk about how sharp this unit looks without bringing attention to the

number of lights added to it. This again is a sign that LJ’s love of a good-looking truck extends well past daylight hours. It also meant I couldn’t do a photoshoot without keeping LJ up late enough to capture the Coronado’s night-time attire.

The big question at the end of the day however is how is LJ coping with a truck that flies so far above the radar now? Mary was kind enough to answer this one.

“I love the attention,” she laughs. “LJ doesn’t. But it is good for the business. We actually have new customers ringing us out of the blue. People see it and call us.”

LJ is quick to add that having the right driver is also extremely imperative.

“Yes, it brings attention to the company and has our branding all over it, but having a driver that behaves and represents well with the customers is important.”

L&M Bulk Logistics still has several units out on the road that you will continue to see pass by and not give a second thought to. However, their new Freightliner Coronado is never going to be one of those.

I for one am thankful LJ and Mary chose to express their creativity in such a bold way. Their Coronado epitomises the ‘Save the Best for Last’ adage.

Large crowds, new sponsors and a huge line up of trucks were among the many highlights of The Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show as it made its post-COVID return to the circuit in November

The 34th Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show, now sponsored by HHA & Larsen Truck Sales, returned to a full schedule in November 2022 with what the organisers have called one of the biggest turn-out of entrants and spectators in a decade.

Volunteers were kept busy serving food and registering the trucks for the judging and a quality line up of country music and free children’s entertainment created an enjoyable atmosphere for the more than 3,000 people who attended the event.

When I drove up to the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve just out of Castlemaine’s main drag where the show was held, I found everything to be well run and the volunteers I encountered helpful and easy to talk to.

events and, while impressive, they had a distinct corporate air and feel to them. What struck me at the truck show that day was the passion and sense of community you could see on the faces of everyone who had made the effort to turn up.

All of those half-moons' of camp chairs filled with tired but happy drivers, who had spent the past few days getting their trucks up to show quality or driven long distances from around Victoria and could now finally relax, talk to old friends and admire all the other people who had made similar efforts over the last few days.

Trucking for a cause

The excitement and energy of the event translated into a very successful show for Rotary with early reports saying the profits would enable the club to give to a raft of good causes in the year ahead.

“Along with the Art Show, this event enables us to support many community projects and youth scholarships each year,” Thomas says.

Of all the truck show volunteer roles perhaps the most unenviable task was that of the six judges who had to assess 222 trucks over the two days. In a toughly contested show, there were some hair-split scores to determine who took home the 12 trophies.

Rig of the Show and a $1,000 cash prize went to an impressive Kenworth owned by JBE Transport, while Bransgove Trucking’s 2017 Kenworth T900 Legend took out Saturday’s Best on Ground, proof that it’s worthwhile turning up early.

number of operators and regular drivers. These included Chris Brown of Browns Stockfeed who brought his staff and several of his spectacular red and white Kenworths over from Leongatha. Browns ended up taking home the Best Fleet Award from the show.

Brown told me his business has been around since 2003 when he founded the company with his brother. His father and uncle had also owned transport businesses in Victoria.

The Browns are in the business of carting their own grain around Victoria and New South Wales. When talking of the company’s fleet, he admitted a clear preference for Kenworths.

“We’ve got a couple of Western Stars but the fleet is pretty much all Kenworths,” Brown says.

As we got to talking a familiar handful of issues all operators are struggling with quickly came up.

“Fuel prices are always an issue at the moment, it’s a big cost when you’re running 30 trucks.”

On the plus side, he says the driver shortage

isn’t much of a problem for them.

“We’re pretty lucky, we don’t turn a lot of guys over. We get good drivers, we look after them and they tend to stay. Having nice equipment brings good drivers to you. People want to drive them.".

Overall however, Brown says the government needs to focus on getting more drivers into the industry.

“There’s a lot of operators who have gotten out of the industry recently, because it has gotten too difficult.”

And the winners were…

Ten category winners collected their trophies at the end of the show, with additional prizes being awarded to the People’s and Trucker’s Choice and five entrants selected by HHA (Heavy Haulage Australia) and Larsen’s.

Co-sponsor Jon Kelly from HHA expressed his pleasure at returning to the Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show and announced that HHA and Larsen’s Truck Sales would continue to sponsor the next two shows.

One of larger operators who made an appearance that weekend was Membrey’s Transport & Crane Hire.

Membrey’s sponsored the Best on Ground award and got to take home the Best Working Rig (under 2 years) award themselves.

The company’s founder, Craig Membrey, had his hands full when I strolled past their stall, however I grabbed the chance to chat to his son Jack Membrey.

Although only 15, Jack says he knows his way around a truck as well as anybody else in the company and told me a bit about their operations which run mostly around Dandenong, Clyde, Packenham and throughout Victoria. The company also does trips to Brisbane.

When it came to my asking Jack about the size of Membrey’s fleet, there was a lot of back and forth between family and staff, with the number falling somewhere around 50 trucks and well over 200 trailers.

Jack will have to wait a few more years until he can formally go for his heavy vehicle licence, but it was clear that Membrey’s will have plenty of work for the company’s

There was one fantastic Kenworth I spotted whose name made me want to know more.

Leo Kelly’s W900, nicknamed the ‘Midnight Special’, is something of a truck show award legend.

The truck first took out Truckin’ Life’s Rig of the Year award in 1990 and then after that, as Kelly puts it, “it just kept winning”.

The Midnight Special wasn’t always Kelly’s partner in crime on the truck show circuit as he told me he didn’t see the rig for two decades.

“I had the truck for 10 years, sold it and then bought it back again about seven years ago and have recently done it all up to take it ’round truck shows again,” he says.

Kelly is a farmer who carts his own produce, including cattle and grain, around the western districts of Victoria. He says he hasn’t been to Castlemaine for a while although the truck once won Truck of the Show there two years in a row.

“Not many trucks have done that,” he adds.

anymore, but with all its history it’s certainly worth hanging onto for a while longer.

“This truck doesn’t do anything but sit in the shed at home, besides win truck awards of course."

There was one truck that was just asking to be ogled and that was the bright purple Kenworth C509 built up as a tow truck for Truckworks of Adelaide.

Steve Gus and Gordon Smith from the South Australian-based company told me a bit about their regular duties.

“The core of our job is road transport crash

repair,” Gus says. Truckworks also builds tow trucks for the Australian market; they’re up to around 200 to date. They’re a well-respected name in South Australia, having been operating for over 40 years in the state and in their home state of Tasmania as well.

“We’re only trying to branch out more and more, with new equipment and efforts to get our name out,” Gus adds.

Truckwork’s fleet is currently a mixture of Kenworth’s and Freightliners.

“We try to have a diverse fleet. With the supply issues there are at the moment, it

makes it hard to get certain makes.”

Speaking of the C509 they had at the show, Gus says it was a very capable build. “You can roll out to a job and be ready to do anything.” This includes hauling B-doubles and road trains that have been involved in accidents.

Gus also mentioned that signature paint schemes are a bit part of the business.

“The truck we’ve brought today is one of our more glamorous paint schemes. All hand painted,” he explains.

Truckworks seemed to make no apologies for being proud and flamboyant in what they do. Gus had a knowing smile when he mentioned the choice of colour for the trucks.

“Purple has been the paint scheme for a long time,” he says. “It’s a mobile business card essentially.”

That for me summed up what it was like to walk around the dusty reserve in Castlemaine. All those dolled-up trucks, their attentive staff and drivers were visual representations of their companies and the values they espoused.

Bathurst came alive with the sounds of big trucks rolling in from all over the state and the country for the 2022 Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show

The weather gods allowed a reprieve from the rain to let the show go ahead

Now I’m the first to admit I know am a pretty lucky guy. As I sit in Sydney airport writing this story and waiting to catch my flight home, my surroundings remind me of the fact that I’m a pretty lucky guy. Not because I have the love of a good woman, healthy kids, steady work and all that. A humbler more selfless person would appreciate and acknowledge those attributes. Not me though, the instigator prompting the self-reflection of my lucky life today was none other than mother nature. Allow me to explain.

When I arose from my motel room in Bathurst this morning to pack up my rental car and drive down to Sydney to fly home it was raining cats and dogs. I mean proper cats and dogs too, not those hairless sphynx

There was thunder and lightning and plenty of surface water as I hauled butt back to Sydney airport. Although it doesn’t sound particularly lucky, here’s the thing. The previous 48 hours had been nothing short of spectacular. Meaning after so much of the state of NSW has been affected by flooding and road closures in November, the weather gods allowed just enough of a reprieve to ensure the ever-popular Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show was able to go ahead with some spectacular rigs and swarms of people.

Mother nature took a long enough break to ensure my Nikons got a thorough workout and then with the show over, she let rip again.

Bondwoods Transport from Brisbane had some stunning trucks entered at Bathurst, taking home plenty of trophies as well – Best Kenworth, Best Total Rebuild, Best Old Working 1997-2006 and Best Interstate

Lucky! As grateful as I am that mother nature gave the Bathurst region a break long enough to allow this great show to go on, there is no denying the weather in the preceding weeks had already taken a toll on the show and its attendance.

A vast majority of New South Wales has been, and still is, affected by major flooding and this in turn made it difficult for many to attend. It also meant that many entrants took the safer option of not bringing their trailers into the grounds like previous years.

Rainy days

For the 2021 Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show there were close on 200 preregistrations, however that number was down significantly on November 19 last year. The flip side of this was it made life a lot easier for chief parking officer Jamie Woods from Bondwoods Transport. Jamie spent most of Friday and Saturday morning marshalling trucks into the staging area. With fewer entries it meant he had more space to position the trucks in photographically pleasing positions. I’m pretty sure staging the trucks so all of us ‘truckarazzi’ could get good photos wasn’t his main goal, but it was a happy by-product and was well appreciated.

One of the great things about the Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show Is something I just mentioned in the previous paragraph. While the show itself is on the Saturday, a large majority of the trucks get staged up in the showgrounds on the Friday afternoon and evening. There are several rationales for

this. I believe the main reason is to allow us truck enthusiasts more time to snap photos of some ultra-cool rigs, however the truth is it has a lot more to do with the Bathurst Outdoor Expo and Christmas Markets. That is the other event running concurrent to the truck show at the same venue.

Although it doesn’t start until 10am on Saturday, there are people flocking to the showgrounds at ungodly hours of Saturday morning so many of the trucks enter the venue on Friday. This means there’s less congestion at the showground’s front gates and there is also less chance ‘Joe Public’ will do anything that offends the health and safety people.

The added bonus is the trucks get to park up

and finish polishing on location. It also allows for a pretty cool Friday night lights show.

Roll on Saturday and the official 2022 Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show. As mentioned, the numbers were down but the quality was damn hot and next level.

There were trucks from all over the place. Chief parking officer Jamie had come down from Brisbane with several of the Bondwoods Transport trucks. There was the alwaysstunning Winston Express fleet from Sydney, as well as some classic old trucks from both local and intrastate.

As in previous years the support from local companies was just phenomenal.

The Ballinger Kenworths are always on point – the stunning T950 and the recently added T909

of the company’s DAF. You can never go past the Ballinger Kenworths either, while Oberonbased Mangan Logging had a fantastic display of hard-working loggers. Those trucks were a particular favourite with the kids.

While I have taken the time to mention a few of the bigger names I would like to ‘shout out’ to all the trucks there.

Considering the atrocious weather leading up to the event and the difficulties faced in our industry at the moment, seeing so many people from big and small companies turn up was fantastic. I should say it wasn’t just ‘turning up’, it was turning up in stunningly prepared trucks.

However, I did manage to pick up an amazing chef’s knife and some outstanding Jerkymite Jerky. True story, vegemite-flavoured Jerky.

Sam’s choice

All in all, this was my third Dane Ballinger Memorial Truck Show and I still put it as one of my must-see events. The hardest part of the whole day is waiting around until 2.30pm to hear the judges’ choices. The Best Kenworth is always the most difficult to judge in a land of immaculate Kenworths.

We were extremely lucky with the weather; you could not have picked a better day for the show. There were trade stands galore where I was able to pick up more gear I didn’t know I needed. The very talented artist Brett Sullivan had made the journey up from Victoria and had his collection of shirts and prints for sale. Bruce Gunter and his Copy Southbound podcast team were there. But as popular as his podcast is, it now seems to be his restored Max Keogh Kenworth that is the main drawcard these days.

If you were fully stocked with shirts, logbook covers or truck embroidered cushions and you needed a change of pace, that’s where the Bathurst show shines. You simply walk out of the oval and into the Outdoor Expo and Christmas markets. Personally, I didn’t need any ornamental Christmas lampposts, nor any wooden chopping boards or leather dog collars.

There are two major prizes, one of which is Sam’s Choice, the winning truck picked by the late Dane Ballinger’s eldest son Sam. For the 2022 show he chose the stunning Kenworth T909 from Haran Haulage.

The other top prize is of course the Dane Ballinger Memorial Prize for Truck of the Show. The 2022 trophy went to Freightlinx with their stunning 100-year anniversary Mack Super-Liner. The spectacular Super-Liner is a rolling tribute to our fallen servicemen and women and carries the number plate LESTWE. The Bathurst show was actually the first truck event the big Mack had been entered into, so it’s batting pretty well – one win out of one.

Trophies and prizes aside, it was a fantastic day. Lots of shine, loads of smiles and more than a few dagwood dogs.

I shall wrap it up by blessing my lucky socks once again. Mother nature held off just long enough for all those stunning trucks to show off their shine and allowed everyone have a perfect day.

With the rush to electric trucking moving quickly Volvo Group Australia’s Paul Ilmer took time out to share his thoughts on the viability and certainty of battery-electric prime movers taking their place in the market in the coming years

In many ways, Paul Ilmer is the epitome of the quiet corporate achiever. The bloke in the background, always there, always thinking and no doubt, always influential.

Yet, despite a somewhat deferential demeanour, he does not go unnoticed. Indeed, when he was a regular Volvo Group Australia (VGA) representative at Truck Industry Council meetings, where senior executives from all brands converge to advance the interests of Australia’s truck and component suppliers, some top level competitors openly rated him as a highly capable and impressive executive performer.

An unassuming smile and simple “sometimes” are his only admission when asked how often executive poachers have come calling. It seems, however, it would take something very special and hugely lucrative to entice an end to almost 20 years with VGA: And now more than ever as Volvo races headlong into the era of batteryelectric trucks, with an eager and passionate Ilmer apparently thriving at the pointy end of the process.

The way he sees it, this is the future unfolding and while his official title is vicepresident of engineering technology and business development, reporting directly to VGA chief Martin Merrick, it’s a candid Ilmer

in a very short time

who concedes he has willingly become the company’s ‘go to’ figure for all things electric.

It all started, Ilmer casually explains, about four years ago when he needed little encouragement to look into the broadly evolving e-mobility market and consider VGA’s opportunities and obstacles. Soon enough, it was consuming at least half his time before two years ago, as the introduction of electric trucks became inevitable, the role became full-time. So, while others continued with the day-to-day ICE (internal combustion engine) business, Ilmer was tasked with building the platforms for the integration of electric trucks into VGA’s model range and in the process, trying

to make e-mobility “as normal as possible.”

Instead of the Truck Industry Council, he’s now a member of the Electric Vehicle Council and it’s a frank Ilmer who asserts that as interest in electric vehicles has gathered pace so, too, has the demand for information from industry and business groups.

“In all honestly,” he says earnestly, “we haven’t gone to our customers about electric trucks, they’ve come to us seeking our response on things like sustainability and how electric models impact their costs.

“A lot of our early development work with operators has been simply consultative.”

As he was quick to mention though,

consultation has extended well beyond the road transport industry. Big business also wants to know as much as possible about this new era of automotive electrification and the day after our meeting in Sydney, he was speaking as an invited guest at a sustainability forum hosted by the Commonwealth Bank.

Surprisingly perhaps, Ilmer contends VGA’s move to electrics has been relatively free of significant issues. “So far, issues are very few,” he says, adding that somewhat surprisingly, battery charging has not been cited as a major impediment to the introduction of electric trucks.

Of course, that may change if recharging infrastructure develops too slowly but with Volvo’s new FH and FM heavy-duty electric models set to join their smaller FL and FE siblings in VGA’s stable in the back-half of 2023, he emphasises the greatest challenge remains the lack of regulatory approval for a 7.5 tonne front axle allowance.

As a forthright Ilmer commented, the FM Electric and FH Electric are fitted with six 500kg batteries to deliver a driving range of around 300km and, obviously enough, the combined weight of the batteries overloads the current 6.5 tonne steer axle allowance. Thus, as he bluntly points out, the whole electric truck proposal for carbon neutrality falls on its face if there’s no regulatory concession for a 7.5 tonne allowance on the steer axle.

Subsequently asked if VGA is assuming too much in its bid for a heavier steer axle allowance when, historically, bureaucrats and politicians have been averse, or at the very least extremely slow, to agree to higher axle weights without industry concessions in return, a thoughtful Ilmer answered, “Perhaps, but it needs to be done if we want carbon neutrality.”

Nonetheless, he admits to cautious confidence that the social, industrial and political pursuit of carbon neutrality is a major driver for the introduction of electric vehicles in general.

Moreover, he agrees the election last year of the Albanese federal government provides a more positive platform for the electric vehicle industry.

Road trials

Meantime, VGA is preparing to start road trials of its heavy-duty battery-electric models, with an FM Electric first to hit the road. While he wouldn’t be drawn on timelines or locations for the trial in the lead-up to FM and FH electric trucks going on sale, he said the models are likely to carry the same 44 tonnes gross combination mass rating as their Swedish counterparts.

Yet as he was similarly quick to emphasise, there’s more to their introduction than simply running trials over various routes. Critically, there are many protocols to be determined, not

least the development of major training programs at dealer and service levels. Safety, for instance, is a vital issue in both the commissioning and decommissioning of a 600 volt electrical system, while driver training programs will be essential to guide the operational transition to batteryelectric trucks, including recharging requirements.

So, too, will sales processes require a new approach, Ilmer explained, citing the creation of an Electric Range Simulation (ERS) program for determining the suitability of an electric truck for a proposed application. As he remarked, a battery-electric truck won’t be suitable for all applications, and it’s to the proposed buyer’s advantage that an ERS report accompanies each sales order to determine the truck’s suitability for a particular task.

However, with reports that an electric truck will cost as much as three times more than an equivalent diesel model, pricing could be an early detriment for electric trucks. Ilmer acknowledges that while price shock could be an issue. He equally asserts there’s no confirmation on price at this

stage and that the ‘three times’ figure may prove to be overstated. Time will tell.

Whatever the issues, it is an entirely adamant Ilmer who insists VGA is on track to make electric trucks a major part of its product portfolio and vitally, is well advanced with plans to build electric models on the same line as diesel counterparts at its Wacol (Qld) factory by 2026.

Much further down the technological path, he’s confident hydrogen-fuelled electric trucks will eventually become a reality but concedes, “Hydrogen is still a long way down the track.”

Likewise, electric trucks do not mean the end of diesel. Not by a long shot.

“We’ll be using diesel for decades,” says a definite Ilmer, emphasising Volvo’s commitment to ongoing research and development into diesel engine efficiency.

Still, in the next breath it’s a blatantly optimistic and confident Ilmer who contends that by 2030 up to 50 per cent of VGA’s production at Wacol could be batteryelectric trucks.

“We’ve gone from baby steps to big strides in a very short time,” he concluded.

Townsville truck driver and transport industry up and comer Hugh Paton was recently honoured as the ‘Young Achiever’ co-winner at the Queensland Trucking Association’s Freight Industry awards. The operations manager for Sizer and Cogill shared his thoughts on life in the transport game

Q: How did it feel to accept the award?

A: It was a real honour; I’ve been working in the transport industry all my life but being so young I never expected anything like an award that’s for sure.

Q: Did you ever think you would win?

A: No way, I never expected any of this to happen that’s for sure. I just thought someone had to show up to the event because my company was part of the association and had tickets to the dinner event. I honestly had no idea I was to be the winner until the moment they called my name out at the show.

Q: How did the nomination come about?

A: We’re part of the QTA (Queensland Trucking Association). The person we deal with there nominated me. She has a lot to do with our business up here in Queensland. I was really busy at the time and tried to say that I couldn’t make it to Brisbane for the show. I kicked and screamed and told my boss I wasn’t going to be there. He came to me and said I had to go whether I liked to or not. So I begrudgingly got on a plane and flew over, went to the show. And bugger me dead I won the award. A: I was born into the industry; my Dad has a transport logistics company and so there were always trucks around when I was growing up. I’d come home from school and wash trucks, or on the weekend help out. Then as soon as I could get my licence, I was in a truck every chance I could get pretty much.

I had a mind to stay out of the trucks when I left school though, I wanted to become a diesel mechanic. I just didn’t think the lifestyle would suit me, it’s such a tough job. But it’s still in my blood, I can’t avoid it completely. Even now, every now and then I still like to get away for a drive.

After school I did a dual apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic and an auto electrician. Once I finished that I started my own business as a mechanic and a contractor and that’s how I got involved with Sizer and Cogill, who I work for now, because I was a contract mechanic for them.

Chris Sizer, the director, then asked me to move to Townsville. I worked for them

as a mechanic for a short time but then was soon in a truck helping out. With the driver shortage they needed all the help they could get, and I had my heavy vehicles licence already so I just jumped in and started driving.

Everything really changed for me one Sunday afternoon when I was sitting having a beer and my boss Chris suddenly comes and says to me, “Here’s my phone” and handed me his work phone. He wanted me to be the manager while he was away just like that; we seriously did the handover the morning he was leaving. He just said, “You’ll be right”.

So that’s how it all started. I was proper worried about it at first, I told him no way this is happening. But then I just grabbed it with both hands and now 18 months later I’m still doing it.

A: The peace and the quiet and the long drives, the people you meet up and down the road.

As well as all the challenges you come up against out in the bush.

Q: What do you enjoy about truck driving and working in your industry?

Q: What’s your background in the industry?

A: At the moment it’s not having the young fellas in the industry. I really don’t know what the future holds for transport in this country. Kids these days are pushed to either go to uni or do an apprenticeship.

And even if young people do want to work, because of the insurance, no one wants to employ anyone under 25 most of the time. Unless you’re born and bred into the industry it’s very hard to get a start.

A: The fact that you must be 25 before anyone will give you a real start in the industry. Most people, by then, have already started their career pathway, they’ve done an apprenticeship or gotten a university degree. It’s very hard for younger people to get a start.

The only reason I was able to get a start before then, and I think this is the rule generally, is because I was born into it and started working with trucks from a very young age.

A: It’s a shame there isn’t more young people working because it’s a tight knit community and a lot of fun really. There’s so many opportunities and different experiences, you get to see the country too.

The QTA has now come up with their apprenticeship program which I think is a good thing for the industry to bring more young people in. But there’s a massive gap there between the older folks who are working and the younger people coming through.

A: I’m keen to keep on as operations manager of Sizer and Cogill for a while, we’re growing a lot now with 24 trucks that we have moving around.

A: Employers will be forced into using electrics trucks if the shortage of drivers continues.

Leader of the pack

The team at Toyota Material Handling Australia helped this Queensland pet products company start running with the big dogs

Durability and reliability are the key features of the Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) forklifts that online pet retailer Budget Pet Products uses in its warehouse locations.

Based in Molendinar in South East Queensland, the retailer now has a team of more than 120 employees and multiple warehouse locations, providing affordable products to pet owners around the country.

But the company only started working with TMHA four years ago, after Budget Pet Products grew dissatisfied with their forklift supplier.

Budget Pet Products warehouse manager Cheryl Norvock said TMHA had proven to be an excellent partner through a period of growth.

“They have made serving and providing parts so easy,” she says.

“Overall, the service has been great. One key difference is that TMHA has always partnered with us to help solve our growing pains.”

Starting out with a single 2.5-tonne Toyota forklift, Budget Pet Products now owns a mix of forklifts, order

pickers and high lift pallet trucks, with Norvock praising their performance, durability and service offering.

“We’ve found the ideal balance of machinery features and service offering with TMHA. Our business is 24/7 with very little downtime – a machine with good features is nothing without the parts and service to back it up, and vice versa,” Norvock says.

“We’ve have had various machinery over the last 13 years and find the combination of reliable Toyota forklift features and great service to be superior all-round offering.”

Since its inception in 2009, Budget Pet Products has steadily grown its business by offering affordable products for a wide range of pets, from dogs and cats, to birds, fish, reptiles, and horses.

It has amassed over 350,000 customers and looks to continue to grow its burgeoning business.

Peer network

Two Aussie entrepreneurs have set up a social network they hope will give operators, engineers, and tradies quick answers to complex problems.

Troy McDonald and Brett Baker say Torqn is a global connection platform for users, suppliers, and regulators of industrial plant and equipment,.

Torqn users sign up to collaborate in groups, called Loops, of people that use the same equipment – allowing safety notices, tricks and tips to be shared quickly among users.

“If your machine alternator is playing up, you can post on your Torqn Loop to effectively ask for suggestions and solutions,” McDonald says.

A review platform will provide feedback aggregated from a series of user posts for a single piece of equipment – to help companies make their purchase decision.

And the Loop settings can be easily changed – allowing users to connect instantly, rather than building a network of experts over time.

Baker, who had spent a decade working in the mining industry as a safety and training manager, says he found knowledge sharing to be difficult during his time in the industry.

“Best case scenario, maybe a couple of people on a site with 400 employees gets an alert and then they have to decide what to do with the information. It may get lost in the day to day, very busy communications blur as well,” he says.

Baker says that with the app, everyone signed up would get a safety alert immediately and would be able to act on it straight away.

The system is now up and running after they raised McDonald and Baker raised $3 million in seed funding.
