Welcome
It’s all kicking off and I’m hanging on. The wild ride that Earthmoving Equipment Magazine has become is running at full throttle and it feels like I’m just a passenger.
The obvious indicator of the mag’s increasing velocity is the new look. It’s lean. It’s mean. It looks sharper than a clean machine. This is one good-looking journal of record for an industry that’s growing nearly as fast as the magazine itself.
Just take a look at the stories. It doesn’t get any faster than MotoGP championship contender Jack Miller. One of the world’s fastest
to pose for a couple of pics for this issue and outline his love of earthmoving plant and the Cat brand in particular.
And while rubbing shoulders with celebrities is all very well, elsewhere the EEM team’s been out and about, continuing its close association with CONEXPO 2023, and in particular, the Global Operator Challenge. Team EEM were on the spot in Japan as the Aussie boys flew the flag, and everyone in the office is just about to seize a clapper valve with excitement over the big finals. The lads are off to Vegas to cheer the boys on – and no doubt submit another massive wad of expense claims.
Those lads live life in the fast lane, for sure.
On the cover is another huge success story. Queensland outfit Digstar is running hard with Epiroc attachments, and Epiroc itself is setting a furious pace with some premium new screening gear. Of course we’ve got case studies, inside industry news from people who are really in the industry, and of course, like no other Australian earthmoving publication, we’ve jumped in the cab and done some hands-on assessments of some really fabulous earthmoving machinery. Any wonder it feels as though we’re running hard. We have to be to keep up with everything
It’s not easy, but you know what?
The pace. The look. The quality of work that has everyone wondering how we do it… it’s what makes the earthmoving industry the powerhouse that moves this country along. It works for the magazine, too.
Just wait until you see next issue!

Digstar and Epiroc
South East Queensland operation Digstar is owned and operated by dynamic husbandand-wife team, Paul and Lea Murphy. After 16 years in the earthmoving industry, the couple recently purchased both the HC 850 Compaction Plate and SB 702 Solid Body Breaker from Epiroc. It’s proving a great business decision.
You never know what twists and turns life has instore for you.
Paul and Lea have never looked back since getting out of the film industry and starting up Digstar so they could spend more time at home building their family. Life in the film industry often involved weeks and months away from home, and they would often end up on separate productions and not seeing each other for long periods.
But life sure did change significantly after setting up Digstar and entering the earthmoving game.
As much as the career change sounds like, and is, a vastly different path for the pair, the fact Paul had grown up on a banana farm, and in his teenage years had learnt to operate a range of machinery, meant it wasn’t such a strange choice.
“The film industry was an amazing part of my life,” said Paul. “I enjoyed it greatly at the time. It allowed me the opportunity to work in some amazing places and enabled some amazing experiences. But the time away from home
wasn’t conducive to the family environment we were looking to create.
“After setting up Digstar in 2007, our family now consists of a 15-year-old boy and twin 13-year-old girls.”
“After growing up on the banana farm and getting exposure to, and learning to operate various types of machinery, I always knew I enjoyed this type of work and that one day I could come back to it,” recounted Paul. “My very first-ever machine was a Bobcat 742, which was the humble beginnings of Digstar. Today I still mostly work as an owner-operator who uses up to four or five subbies when needed. I also tend to work a lot with other owner-operators, which has worked well over the years and contributed to Digstar working on larger projects as well as smaller private jobs.”
New Epiroc attachments from BAEG Paul currently works with a modern and wellequipped fleet and a collection of attachments which includes: a 15-tonne Volvo excavator with GPS, an Epiroc hydraulic hammer, an Epiroc
hydraulic plate compactor, augers and more, along with a five-tonne
loader
and
The equipment is
work on Paul’s and Digstar’s jobs, including major roadworks and other similar infrastructure-type projects, along with the occasional private job which pops up through his various networks.
Career highlights and challenges
When asking Paul about both the highlights and challenges of his career he offered, “Like any industry it has its ups and downs, but remaining successful through those challenges is something I’m proud of. Also, the final trim of the Gold Coast university hospital in 2010 stands out as a highlight from over the years.
“When it comes to the biggest challenges, I’m sure most owner-operators would agree equipment failures and money challenges are the hardest things to manage. Both seem to happen at the most unforeseen and testing times. One of the biggest lows I’ve personally experienced in the industry was the way I was
mishandled by a major manufacturer, with poor service, poor communication, and no honesty. Being treated poorly because I’m a small player just doesn’t cut it in today’s market.
“The upside of that experience is it has led me to my new Volvo excavator and my awesome new Epiroc plate compactor and various hammers purchased through Nathan at BAEG.”
Reliable partners
Smaller operations like Digstar live and breathe by the relationship with reps and suppliers. Just like the larger operators at the big end of town, unforeseen breakdowns, repairs and servicing bring everything to a screaming halt.
But it’s been the excellent customer service, product knowledge and industry insights from Nathan at BAEG, along with the amazing, well-built and maintenancefree Eprioc attachments that have provided such an impressive experience in the new relationship between Digstar and BAEG.
“So far,” Paul explained, “I have purchased various hammers and a plate compactor from BAEG, and I have to say my experience
Epiroc
has recently brought on Digstar as a new Epiroc customer. Amazing, well-built and maintenance-free Eprioc attachments have made the new relationship between Digstar and BAEG a happy one.
National Sales Manager Nathan Parziani (right),with Epiroc’s National Sales Manager Nathan Parziani has been extremely positive. Nathan has been honest, informative, and easy to get hold of when I’ve had questions throughout the pre- and post-sales experience, which is integral for owner-operators like myself.
“Furthermore, the Epiroc products have been amazing and reliable, with BAEG’s sales availability, sales service and after-sales service all top-shelf. When you have a problem, it gets solved efficiently, which is what it’s all about in earthmoving.”
Paul’s goals for Digstar are to keep everything rolling on as it has over the past 16 years, providing quality service and advice to people requiring earth to be moved, and utilising other owner-operators on larger jobs, allowing the pieces of ‘the pie’ to be spread evenly.
Building a deep and lasting partnership
While spending time with Paul in northern NSW and Queensland filming his new Epiroc products, we had a great opportunity to catch up with Epiroc National Sales Manager Nathan Parziani, who has recently brought on Digstar as a new Epiroc customer. Nathan has vast experience in the earthmoving industry, and has been in his role at BAEG for the past 2.5 years. We asked Nathan about his relationship with Digstar.
“It’s been an awesome experience,” smiled the heavy-equipment specialist. “Paul kicked off with a great first purchase and we are both laying the foundations for a long-term relationship. Working with both smaller owneroperator outfits like Digstar and larger clients is equally important to us. We pride ourselves on
this approach across the sales team at BAEG.
“Paul is a top bloke and it’s been a pleasure working with him on this first purchase. His new Epiroc attachments will enable him to reach the project scope in the least time possible while maintaining reliability. As BAEG is the largest national independent stockist of attachments across all departments, including sales, hire, parts and service, we know we have all the pieces in place to help customers like Digstar reach their goals and achieve the success they are working toward.”
Digstar has just purchased the Epiroc HC 850 Compaction Plate and Epiroc SB 702 Solid Body Breaker, both of which are powerful, highspecced machines, for Digstar’s current and future needs. The Epiroc HC 850 integrated flow and pressure valve prevents overloading and
produces low noise with no need for manual greasing.
While the SB 702 maintenance-free highpressure accumulator, integrated PRV and solid body eliminates common parts to enable high durability in a slim, compact design, water galleries cast into a solid body do an excellent job of dust suppression.
Seeing Nathan and Paul get along so well on the day of our photo shoot, and them making plans to ride bikes together as they both love racing and motorsports, was a fantastic experience – as was seeing Paul and Digstar get the positive experience they have been looking for.
With a great collection of new suppliers behind them, the sky is the limit for Paul and Digstar.

New Cat® 340 Excavator offers best-in-class production
Excavator Product Specialist, Teo Yibin, introduces the new Cat® 340 Hydraulic Excavator, along with the key features and benefits.
The new Cat 340 Hydraulic Excavator features a more powerful engine, wider track gauge, and 6.8-tonne counterweight to increase productivity by 10 per cent over the 2020 model year Cat 336. Its increased power and stability, combined with next generation electrohydraulic system efficiency, make it the best choice in the 40-tonne class for moving tonnes per hour.
Powerful and rugged with less maintenance
“Customers will experience a new level of performance with the new Cat 340. Improvements made over the previous model make the new excavator more productive and stable with larger work tool options, giving our customers more flexibility to complete a wider range of projects,” Yibin said.
“The new excavator’s reinforced structures ensures long-term durability during harsh digging, truck loading, and hammer applications. This, coupled with the reliable Cat C9.3B engine that promises 14 million service hours, attests to its long-term reliability. The Cat 340 is designed with features to help the excavator power through the most demanding jobs while saving fuel.”
Three engine modes match excavator power to the demands of the job while saving fuel. Power mode delivers maximum power to meet the most demanding tasks. Smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions, to lower fuel consumption. Reducing engine speed to a constant 1500rpm, Eco mode minimises fuel consumption.
One of the design objectives is to help owners lower their operating cost and reduce downtime.
“Synchronised 1,000-hour oil and fuel filter
service intervals reduce downtime,” Yibin said. “The extended intervals also eliminate labour cost for nine oil and fuel filter changes and parts cost for 27 oil and fuel filters over 10,000 machine operating hours, compared to many competitive 30-40-tonne excavators.”
High-ambient temperature capability of 52˚C, cold-start capability at -18˚C, and the ability to work at up to 4,500m above sea level make the 340 suitable for virtually any environment. Auto hydraulic warm-up in cold temperatures gets the machine to work faster and prolongs the life of machine components. The air intake filter with pre-cleaner features high dust capacity, and a high-efficiency hydraulic fan offers optional automatic reverse to keep cores free from debris.
Yibin also highlighted that with Product Link™, data is automatically collected. Information such as location, hours, fuel usage, idle time, maintenance alerts, diagnostic codes, and machine health can be easily tracked and viewed online via web or mobile applications. This can allow dealers to remotely connect with the machine to diagnose fault codes and update operation software, all while helping to maximise the machine uptime.
Simple, comfortable operation
“In addition, the Next Generation cab brings operator comfort and ergonomics to a whole new level,” Yibin mentioned. “Deluxe cabs come with a heated air-suspension seat with multiple adjustments for seat, console, recliner and armrest. A tilt up left-hand console allows for easier access in and out of the machine.”
Performance-enhancing features like the front-facing control panel, keyless pushbutton start and optional Bluetooth key fob, and large touchscreen monitor with jog dial keys come standard, which simplifies the operation.
At the core of the Cat excavator range, simple, easy-to-use technology helps operators and owners get the most out of their machine.
“Getting more done with standard factory technology is a new benchmark in excavator
Optional Cat Stick Steer makes travel and turning much easier. A host of standard technologies – Cat Payload on-board weighing, Grade Assist for maintaining grade, and 2D Grade with depth and slope indication – elevate operator efficiency and machine productivity.
All Cat Grade systems are compatible with radios and base stations from top third-party technology suppliers. Operators can store up to four depth and slope offsets to quickly cut to grade without a grade checker. Auto Hammer Stop warns operators after 15 seconds of continuous firing and then shuts off the hammer after 30 seconds to prevent wear and tear. Auto Dig Boost and Auto Heavy Lift increase bucket penetration and lift capacity by 8 per cent, and Lift Assist helps operators avoid tipping the machine.
“We are revolutionising how owners and operations utilise our machines to maximise performance and productivity all while having the lowest operation costs to improve their profitability,” Yibin said. “The Cat 340 has to be experience to be believed – it sets a standard that is industry leading and paves our way forward.”
More information about the new Cat 340 hydraulic excavator can be found by contacting the local Cat dealer or visiting www.cat.com
With Product Link, data is automatically collected, easily tracked and viewed online. A key objective was to help owners lower operating costs and reduce downtime. Three engine modes match excavator power to the demands of the job while saving fuel. The excavator’s increased power and stability make it the best choice in the 40-tonne class for moving tonnes per hour.SELL WITH US

Komatsu expands its electric offering
At bauma 2022, Komatsu’s extensive presence at the event spotlighted nearly 40 pieces of equipment while highlighting the brand’s deep ccapabilities and experience around Smart Construction, digitisation and electrification.
Dean Gaedtke, Executive General Manager Construction at Komatsu Australia, said that while electrification is a big forward focus for the industry, Komatsu’s track record in the space stretches back decades.
“We were excited to showcase our latest innovations at bauma, but many people were surprised to be reminded that we’ve had electric machines in market for over 20 years,” Gaedtke said.
“It’s truly exciting to see industry really
picking up the pace now on adoption of electric equipment, and to be able to continue to expand the range of machines we offer with electric power, without compromising on productivity.
“We’ve sold over 1,300 electric drive trucks in Australia, and over 380 electric mining excavators globally, and demand for these game-changing machines is only growing.”
The PC210E all-electric hydraulic excavator was one of the key attractions on the stand, along with an exciting fully electric wheel loader prototype. This new connected and automation-ready construction machine is battery-powered, with zero-emissions and is in advanced stages of testing.
Attendees were also able to get a look in at the PC4000-11 electric drive excavator, with zero emissions, KomVision 360° bird’s eye view and Argus PLM payload metre to identify the bucket payload.
“Our strong focus on Smart Construction was definitely a drawcard to our stand, and also signals Komatsu’s commitment to reaching zero carbon emissions by 2050, and halving our CO2 emissions from product operations from our 2010 levels,” Gaedtke said.
The atmosphere at bauma was like nothing else, he added.
“It was invigorating to be showcasing ground-breaking technologies and new ways of working that will help our industry move
Komastu offered a preview into the future of the construction and mining industry with a huge presence at bauma, focused on Smart Construction and electric machines.
towards a cleaner, safer, more productive jobsite and a sustainable future. It was also great to be able to connect our global product and solutions engineers with our Australian and New Zealand customers, and give them the opportunity to hear the differing needs of our market.”
Just a few of the other key attractions at the Komatsu display included:
• PC950-11 hydraulic excavator – on show for the first time, the machine is scheduled to be introduced to the Japanese and European markets in the 2023 financial year;
• D71PXi-24 dozer – an all-new model in Komatsu’s dozer line-up. Designed to meet customer demand with the ability to push like a D65 and the precision, balance and reflexes of a D61;
• PC88MR-11 midi excavator – compared to its renowned predecessor model, the PC88MR delivers higher productivity, reduced fuel consumption and faster work equipment speed;
• HD785-8 rigid dump truck – productivity meets comfort with an ergonomically designed cab and in-cab noise levels kept to 72 dBA; and
• K100 boom change system – reconfigure the machine within minutes, without leaving the operator cab.

The Government will support businesses by enabling them to deduct the full cost of eligible capital assets acquired from 7:30pm AEDT on 6 October 2020 (Budget night) and first used or installed by 30 June 2023.
Full expensing in the year of first use will apply to new depreciable assets and the cost of improvements to existing eligible assets. For SMEs (with turnover less than $50 million per annum), full expensing also applies to secondhand assets (See Table 1 below).
Businesses (turnover between $50 – $500 million per annum) can still deduct 100 per cent of eligible second-hand assets costing less than $150,000 excluding GST that are purchased by 31 December 2020 and first used or installed by 30 June 2023.
Small businesses (turnover less than $10 million per annum) can deduct the balance of
their simplified depreciation pool at the end of 2021, 2022 and/or 2023. The provisions which prevent small businesses from re-entering the simplified depreciation regime for five years if they opt-out, will continue to be suspended. Table 2 below is a simple table and summary of the Loss Carry Back opportunities, as announced in the Federal Government’s 2020 Budget.
Temporary Loss “Carry Back” opportunities
The Government will allow eligible companies to carry back tax losses from the 2019-20, 202021, 2021-22 or 2022-23 income years to offset previously taxed profits in years later than 2018-19. Corporate tax entities with turnover less than $5 billion per annum can apply tax losses against taxed profits in a previous year, generating a refundable tax offset in the year in which the loss is made. The tax refund would be limited by requiring that the amount carried back is not more than the earlier taxed profits and that the carry back does not generate a franking account deficit.
Franking account deficit?
That is, the loss carry-back tax offset cannot exceed the value of past taxes paid that have not already been distributed to shareholders, as franking credits via dividends.
This is designed to avoid the past payment of tax providing a double benefit. This double benefit could otherwise arise because shareholders received an imputation credit in relation to company tax that, because of loss carry-back, or the company had effectively no longer paid.
The tax refund will be available on election by eligible businesses when they lodge their tax returns for 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 income years.
Currently, companies are required to carry losses forward to offset profits in future years. Companies that do not elect to carry back losses under this measure can still carry losses forward as normal.
To simplify and provide clarity, a conversation with your finance broker and accountant could certainly benefit those making capital purchases in the near future.

Leica Geosystems launches the Leica iCON site excavator
Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, has announced the launch of the new Leica iCON site excavator – a machine control solution that enables compact excavators to carry out designs easily and accurately.
When space is limited, compact excavators are required to get the job done right the first time. To increase the efficiency and accuracy of trenching, grading or moving material on a smaller scale, Leica Geosystems further expands its portfolio by offering machine guidance for small excavators.
The iCON site excavator solution introduces three new components: a new software application, a new dual GNSS receiver and an optional communication device. The iCON site excavator application is available as stand-alone software or as an add-on within the existing and well-established iCON site platform. When used as an add-on, it enables a new workflow for on- and off-machine tasks, empowering construction workers to execute a variety of jobs, leveraging the same tools.
For instance, operators can use the controller unit with a Smart Antenna to stake out or create a design, then immediately mount it in the cab to start grading according to the design. As soon as the excavation or grading to the correct design has been completed, the operator can use the same system to perform as-built checks. This new solution is not only optimising earthmoving tasks for compact excavators, but thanks to the iCON site platform’s unique versatility, operators can use it for both on- and off-machine applications,
resulting in efficient equipment and personnel deployment.
The iCON site excavator application will be available for a range of iCON field controllers in various sizes. The new GNSS receiver and communication device are designed specifically for compact machines, allowing more flexibility to adjust to different sites and project requirements.
“The Leica iCON site excavator is a very flexible and easy-to-use machine control solution which opens the door to digital construction for small- and medium-sized heavy construction companies,” Leica Geosystems President Machine Control Magnus Thibblin said.
“Now, compact excavators can contribute to small or large projects with efficiency powered by Leica Geosystems’ machine control functionality. This sets contractors on a path toward autonomy, enabling them to do earthmoving and detailed grading tasks more efficiently and sustainably.”

Reduce the risk of MPE fires with machinery maintenance
NTI’s Mobile Plant & Equipment Risk Engineer, Hayden Reed said that while some incidents can’t be prevented (e.g. extreme weather), other incidents can – like those relating to human error and maintenance.
Often when maintenance-related incidents occur they are repaired in-house, and no insurance claim is made. Even still, there’s a cost to the business, including disruption to operations and job delays.
“There’s also the time and cost of waiting for a repairer, availability of parts, possible injuries, investigations, reputational damage, and possible site and machinery clean-up, for example,” Reed explained.
“In the current economic climate, replacement parts and plant can be hard to find and slow to replace. Now more than ever, preventing incidents – and reducing their severity and impact should they occur – is a critical business strategy.”
Reed said that in a given year, insufficient maintenance is responsible for a considerable number of MPE claims worth over $50,000 with NTI. Of these incidents, equipment fire is by far the leading outcome at 98 per cent. Around 80 per cent is due to missed machinery maintenance opportunities.
So, how can businesses reduce the number of preventable incidents directly related to insufficient maintenance leading to fire?
Reed suggests two key steps: regular cleaning, and regular maintenance beyond scheduled servicing intervals.
Heavy equipment maintenance for fire safety
Cleaning tips for fire prevention
Keeping MPE clean makes it easier to identify faults and avoid incidents – especially fires –caused by the build-up of debris, especially organic compounds, near heat sources.
“You should definitely have a cleaning regime in place that reflects the nature of the work and the risk,” Reed said. “Consideration should be given towards weather patterns and the machine’s duty cycle.”
Most cleaning is best performed by compressed air as water can compact material and make it bake on, depending on the material.
“You can have a staged cleaning schedule – weekly/monthly in winter and other low-risk periods, but daily in summer,” Reed suggested.
Heavy equipment maintenance and repair
Besides debris, MPE operators should ensure they undertake regular checking and maintenance of cables and hoses in high-risk areas, especially engine and pump bays near high-heat sources such as exhausts.
This is in addition to scheduled servicing and maintenance and is aimed at preventing any undesired and costly incidents.
Particular attention should be given to unfused cables – from battery to isolator and starter motor, and from battery to alternator, Reed said.
If these rub through the insulation and find a way to earth, they will almost certainly cause a fire.
Reed advocates ‘good practice’ as inspecting all hoses and cables every 500 hours, with special attention given to the high-risk areas.
“I am also a big supporter of conducting a high-risk hose/cable audit as a standalone job
annually to ensure these items get the attention they deserve,” he said.
“A rule of thumb is anything over two years or 2,000 hours is increasing in risk for these events.”
Machinery safety near open fire Reed urges operators working near fires to adopt mitigation techniques to avoid potentially catastrophic events. In the past two years, NTI has recorded one claim a year where MPE working near a fire caught alight.
“This could be from trying to clear a firebreak trail near a bushfire or a dozer pushing materials into a fire, usually logs in a paddock getting cleaned up,” Reed said.
“We generally see an ember entering the air intake, lighting the air filter fabric and first seriously damaging the engine and next potentially writing off the machine. The second is where an ember enters the machine and due to debris, further heat and air movement, starts to kindle and results in a large equipment fire.”
To mitigate such risks, Reed suggests:
• Keeping machines clean and free from debris as much as reasonably practical;
• For equipment working around fires, consider fire retardant air filters of pre-filters that cyclonically eject embers; and
• For equipment frequently working around fires consider purpose-built fire guards and windows.

Recent data shows 98 per cent of mobile plant and equipment (MPE) fires are caused by insufficient maintenance. Through regular cleaning and maintenance, businesses can avoid major incidents that damage and disrupt business operations.
Yeah, but consider training?
Off the back of a year that’s seen one of the most hotly contested talent markets in recent history, the money that was thrown around for operators was eyewatering – leading to an increased movement of people who are chasing the mighty dollar. Are the current hourly rates that are on offer sustainable? Who knows?
With that said, not everyone is driven by straight-up cash. For some it can be conditions, for others it can be greater responsibility. What I thought I’d do in this month’s article is spruik the benefits of training your workforce. Not only does it increase their safety, awareness and productivity, but it can be an extremely great tool to help retain individuals too. And did I mention how cheap training is, compared to the recruiting for turnover process?
After 30 years in the industry, from my observation there are a lot of people who thrive on the engagement an organisation can offer, and who see security in a workplace as equal to or higher than an hourly rate. Creating solid training pathways for your employees can tick both of those elements off. Thus, alleviating workforce turnover, which then equates to a stable business and less cash spent on recruiting for turnover. Bingo!
A study conducted by E.L. Goldberg & Associates out of the United States suggests that the real cost of turnover is often estimated to be 33 per cent, or two times the employee’s annual package, depending on the complexity of the position. Approximately 67 per cent of the cost is associated with soft costs — like lost productivity, lost knowledge, and errors
— while 33 per cent of this is in hard costs related to recruiting, background checks and temporary workers needed in the interim.
Based on those figures and comparatively speaking, training costs are a drop in the ocean compared to the recruiting process. Depending on what’s being trained, you can expect to pay between $500 and $2,500 per day for a trainer to come into your business to help upskill your people.
Let’s crunch a few numbers based on the E.L. Goldberg & Associates study. Say you pay an operator $100,000 per annum and they have chosen to leave your business to head across the road to Honest Joe’s Excavations for a greater opportunity.
It’s going to cost you $33,000 to (33 per cent of their package) to replace him.
Now think about this: let’s say the operator comes to you first and says, “I want to stay if you can provide me with greater opportunity.” So, you engage a training provider whose service fee is $1,250 per day to come in and train said operator.
The $33,000 that you’ll drop recruiting for turnover will also buy you 26 days of training!
The value stays inside your company, it demonstrates that you do provide opportunity, and it creates a positive culture that will attract outside talent to your business. Picking up what I’m putting down?
Training is really valuable to all of your business efforts.

A picture means more than a thousand words
Pictures express emotion, they capture a moment in time, record history and convey important messages. And they have another important role: they can define a brand and make an audience sit up and take notice.
When you’ve booked in a photoshoot for your brand, remember that a single photoshoot can produce a plethora of assets that can be used across many mediums and platforms. The long wide angle shot, perfect for web banners and the tall portrait shot with plenty of sky and foreground will be perfect for that full-page print ad – the list of uses goes on and on.
If the brief is detailed and well thought out, the images you get back can serve you campaign after campaign.
To make sure you’re prepared from the get go, there should be a spot in your brand guidelines specifically dedicated to photography. List out the image dimensions needed for collateral and include the style of shots that work for your brand. These could be formal, relaxed, fun or in the moment. And remember that diversity
outlined within your
guidelines you can never go wrong.
One of the most important things to get right in your advertising, marketing or communications activities are the images you choose to convey your brand and your message.

Huntlys Heavy Equipment has made a name for itself over the years by going above and beyond when it comes to catering for client requirements, and by simultaneously expanding its service suite when required. This has seen the husband-and-wife business not only establish long-term client relationships, but also develop its offerings in line with client demand.
Damian Roberts told EEM that he and wife Kerrie took over the business, based out of the Central Queensland city of Rockhampton, in 2007, with the two having since set about both consolidating and building its reputation as an efficient and effective provider of customised solutions.
Roberts, who grew up around machines and who draws on a broad range of experience in the industry, said a particular focus has been the development of close working relationships with local businesses and industries.
“We bought the existing business that was focused on earthmoving, along with a bit of civil type of stuff,” he said. “Over the years, we’ve probably gone a little bit away from machines and are now more into trucks.
“We currently range around 12 employees, with three or four core employees that work closely with the customers. These employees look after most of our jobs, and the customers specifically ask for them. We then go back to the same customers over the long term with the same employees who they trust.”
A broad range of services supported by an efficient and effective approach Huntlys specialises in general earthmoving and tailored transport solutions for local clients, with its service suite spanning heavy haulage, state-wide transport, water cartage, contract and farming earthmoving, roadworks and machine hire.
Roberts told EEM that the business undertakes a substantial amount of work for HQ Plantations, including road maintenance, harvest raking and getting fields ready for replanting, and also carries out ongoing work at the Port Alma salt works.
“We do a bit of everything,” he explained. “We also specialise in heavy haulage, moving machinery. Most of our work is with clients that we’ve worked for over the long term, and we’ve built our reputation over the years by doing the right thing by them – having repeat customers is important to us.
“We try to provide a service where we can get the work done efficiently and effectively, and also keep the costs down for our clients.”
Huntlys has recently added a new Lovol FR220D excavator to its fleet, purchased from Toowoomba-based earthmoving and transport operator Equipment Specialists Australia (ESA). Roberts explained that the machine is not only currently being put to use at Port Alma, but is also part of a push to further expand the business’ overall range of services.
“The other reason we purchased the excavator is to further expand the machinery dry hire side of the business,” he said.
“We’re updating our fleet to provide highquality newer machinery for hire, and buying the FR220D was part of that process. We’ll next be looking at the Lovol loader range due to the high quality and reliability of Lovol.”
Lovol FR220D excavator effectively tackles tough conditions
Roberts said that a key factor behind Huntly’s purchase of the FR220D is its minimal electrical components, making it a good option for the tough environment it is being
that sort of thing in such an environment,” he commented.
“Without so much of the electronic stuff and by keeping it basic, we can maintain the machine effectively in the environment we’re working in.”
Lawrence Perkins, ESA Operations Manager, also highlighted the benefits provided by the reduced electronics.
“Without any computer required to plug in, it’s the machine you want to own for less downtime and huge cost savings, yet comparing to the big-name brands in function, quality and performance,” he told EEM. “Lovol truly compares with the big-name brands, in quality, build and with renowned brands used, such as KPM, Rexroth, Isuzu and Yanmar, also found in trusted brands. With many Lovol machines now working around Australia, feedback has been exceptional, with experienced operators commenting on how good the machines are.”
With ESA’s evolving Lovol range supported by a growing dealer network, Perkins noted they have a wide range of spare parts in stock and are firmly focused on providing comprehensive after-sales support, putting the customers first.
Roberts said the FR220D has proven a strong addition to Huntly’s fleet since the business picked it up in mid-2022, with operators welcoming its capacity to power on through and get the job done in often harsh conditions.
“One of my main guys has been operating it and he’s more than happy,” he said. “We did a test drive before we purchased it and he was happy then as well. We’ve had no issues with it.
It’s done everything required of it and more, at a more cost-effective price.
“Everything’s gone smoothly with ESA, right from ordering the machine, and the wait time was good. We haven’t had any dramas and everything’s been excellent so far.”
Lovol FR220D excavator specs
The FR220D weighs in at 22.5t (operational weight) and runs a 114kW Tier 2 Isuzu engine with a mechanical inline fuel pump (no ECU, EGR, DPR or AdBlue), decked out to deliver strong power and low fuel consumption, with it also featuring:
• A tough and heavy duty high-strength steel construction, designed to reduce stress concentration in key areas;
• A maximum digging height of 10.2m, digging depth of 6.8m and digging radius of 9.9m;
comes with a standard 1m3 GP bucket with teeth (options available); 143 kN digging force, 116 kN dipper arm force;
• The anti-tilt ROPS and FOPS-certified cab is equipped with six silicone oil shock absorbers installed at the bottom of the cab; The cab also features a front windshield that can be partially or fully retracted to the roof, while the visual field is optimised, with a large, wide-angle rear-view mirror eliminating blind spots, along with a suspension seat and air conditioning;
• A K PM hydraulic system with pilot joysticks for precise control; and
• The cab’s anti-slip plate improves slip resistance and makes it safer during maintenance, while the engine’s threestage filtering arrangement is optimised for convenient maintenance.
A key factor behind Huntly’s purchase of the FR220D is its minimal electrical components, making it a good option for the tough environment.
AttCall Civil Contractors and STM Trucks & Machinery
Two decades of great service from STM Trucks & Machinery has made a loyal customer of a NSW-based contractor.
AttCall Civil Contractors has for the better part of three decades been providing its NSW client base a range of earthmoving, excavation and demolition services. The family-owned company has over this time also progressively expanded its capabilities, branching out from its civil origins into areas including haulage and dry hire.
Initially starting out as a one-man, one-
truck operation in 1995, Owner and Managing Director Clinton McKinnon and wife Michelle have since presided over the steady growth of the business, with the wider AttCall Group now having over 80 full-time staff on its books.
Brandon McKinnon, AttCall Operations Manager, told EEM the business has gone from strength to strength since its early days, carving out a niche for itself in the wider civil sector
while adding to its platform of core offerings. Having himself started out as an apprentice mechanic at AttCall, before taking on various roles in its workshop and across the operations side of the company, Brandon has seen firsthand how it has evolved in recent years.
“It’s become AttCall Group, because over the years we’ve taken on more than just the civil base of our business,” Brandon explained. “It’s grown significantly since my dad started it nearly 30 years ago.
“Among the group, we have diversified into different sectors of business within the construction industry, civil contracting, bulk haulage, heavy haulage and plant hire. Each division allows for synergies, which in turn help provide a complete package of services for our valued clients.”
Quality project delivery backed by a strong client-first focus
Brandon told EEM that AttCall’s reputation has been built not only around its quality, on-time project delivery, backed by an experienced and highly skilled team, but is also based in large part on its strong client-first focus behind the scenes.
AttCall’s approach to client relations is underpinned by its team’s wide-ranging
industry knowledge, with an overriding focus on reliability and open communications.
“I think that’s been showcased in our work throughout the years,” Brandon said. “I’d say our clients gravitate to that. Of course, they like to see the end result delivered on time with little interruptions, but they also like the way the AttCall team brings quick solutions to any issues that may arise.”
AttCall’s project portfolio – ranging from school developments to large commercial projects – continues to grow, with it having worked in conjunction with construction companies including including Mainbrace Constructions, Taylor Construction, Parkview Constructions and ADCO Constructions.
Brandon said that among its current projects, AttCall is undertaking work at two Ampol service stations in Pheasants Nest, with it currently the primary contractor for Mainbrace Constructions.
“We’re working on the north and south service stations, which are both still active at the same time,” he explained.
“We’re doing all the earthworks and other preparations, making sure the facility is still accessible, and once the new service stations go in, then we’ll come back through and demolish the existing service stations.”
Kobelco Trimble Ready excavators bring together a range of benefits
AttCall – which has long been running Kobelco excavators, with its fleet including around 50 models at a range of weight classes – has recently added a Kobelco SK235SR-5 24 t excavator, fitted with a Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform, to its line-up.
Kobelco Trimble Ready excavators are designed to make installation of the Trimble machine control system faster, easier and less expensive, comprising a simple hand tools install, and paving the way for greater flexibility in line with customer requirements.
The Trimble system enables automatic control of the bucket and boom position when operating in a semi-autonomous mode, with the operator simply needing to position the machine and pull back on the arm control stick where the grade needs to be cut.
The system, which also works with tilting
buckets and tilt hitches, automatically controls the boom and bucket to keep the cutting edge on grade according to the site plan.
Brandon described the system as “a platform for our job sites”, telling EEM AttCall was initially impressed with the comprehensive product support provided by Trimble authorised dealer SITECH Solutions, which backs its product portfolio with expert training.
“The fact that they were willing to put the training in place first, so we were very comfortable with the system, helped a lot,” he said. “They literally stripped everything back and explained it from the base up.”
Paired with the Trimble system, the SK235SR-5 combines machine control technology with a range of performance and efficiency benefits.
The SK235SR-5’s strong drawbar pulling force (246 kN) produces powerful travel capabilities, enabling it to handle steep slopes and rough roads with ease, while its minimal swing radius (the tail of the upper body extends very little past the crawlers) improves efficiency.
In addition to this, it enables productive working ranges (a maximum digging depth of 6.65 m and a maximum digging reach of 9.85 m), while its compact design allows for continuous 180 degree dig, swing and load operations within a working space of just 3.68 m.
STM Trucks & Machinery gearing up for a busy year ahead
Brandon told EEM that AttCall has been dealing with STM Trucks & Machinery for over two decades, with STM not only backing its sales process with expert product knowledge, but also providing comprehensive after-sales service.
“It’s a hats off to not just the sales reps, but their servicing as well,” he said. “They maintain our equipment to a higher standard, and they don’t miss a beat. This includes contacting us to book in servicing, meaning we don’t have to go to them, and they fit in with our hours.”
STM Marketing Manager Adrian Salvaggio said STM is gearing up for a big year ahead, with the construction industry’s increasing focus on automation and efficiency likely to see high demand for advanced equipment and machinery.
In addition to this, Adrian noted expected continued growth in the logistics and transport space will be a factor in driving product demand.
“That’s why we will continue to invest in the latest innovations, along with our sales, finance, and after-sales support teams, to ensure we are providing the best service possible across Sydney, Wollongong, Bathurst and Canberra,” he said.
“This approach and maintaining our strong market presence will position us well for success in the coming year. As always, we make every decision and measure every outcome based on how well it serves our customers.”

Jack Miller’s return
home
Australian racing star, Jack Miller was agile on a motorbike representing Cat at the ASBK finale in South Australia.
Lining up to start clad in black and yellow, the striking scene of Jack Miller arriving at The Bend was hard to miss. The 27-year-old MotoGP superstar made his return to the Australian Superbike Championships for the final round for a second year in a row. And like in 2021, he did it representing Cat. Miller’s Ducati Panigale V4 S set itself apart with its unique Cat decals that had it looking suitable for both the race track and the work
“It’s awesome to have this sort of freedom and play around a bit with the bike, the leathers and whatnot to really make it how you want to envision it,” Miller said.
“We dipped our feet in the water last year a little bit, and this year it’s come up tops. It’s nice to be able to have that freedom to make it look cool, that’s a big part of it. It’s also about being proud of it too.”
For Caterpillar Marketing Manager Cameron Balzat, going one step further in the multi-year partnership with Miller was fantastic to see.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase the Miller and Caterpillar partnership to our customers in a very different way,” Cameron said. “We know many Cat owners are machinery enthusiasts, for one thing, but being enthusiasts, that translates over to motorsports, in any form.”
Miller’s ride for the Superbikes was well and truly one of a kind. The bike rocks a hexagonal grill mesh detailing and a colour palette akin to other Cat machinery. It even sports ‘JM43T’ –Miller’s team and number in the make/model design you’d find on other Cat machinery. It’s practically part of the fleet, except it can go about 200km/h faster.
“When we designed that bike in conjunction with Jack’s team, we wanted it to represent a Cat machine on the track,” Cameron said. “Obviously, we don’t make two-wheeled bikes, but we wanted it to look like it came from our Cat factories, so to speak, even down to Cat Bolt-head decals to complete the impression of a Cat machine.
Two-way fandom
The partnership between Miller and Cat didn’t start like a typical sponsorship signing. It was Miller’s love for Cat machinery that had him
enquiring about buying some earthmovers for his property near Townsville.
“Jack came to us wanting to buy a tractor,” Balzat said. “That started the discussions, he ended up buying a D3 dozer. He’s got that working on his property up at Townsville; a year later he bought a second Cat machine, a 259D3 Compact Track Loader.”
When he’s not dominating the track for MotoGP or Superbikes, Miller’s roaming his land aboard his Cat machines.
“I love having those machines there. If we do need to make some drastic changes, then we get out the D3 and push around some serious dirt,” he added.
“It’s awesome to have that Cat machinery there to work with at home, it’s something I’ve dreamed of. It’s pretty hot up there, so that aircon definitely comes in handy.”
Cameron said this connection deepened the partnership, and translated well both in the pits and on the track.
INDUSTRY EVENTS
A weekend of re-connecting was more important than any podium finishes for Miller.
“It’s not just Jack representing Cat – he owns our machines and he loves what they do for him and what Cat dealer Hastings does for him,” he said.
“We feel that’s a great connection with Cat machinery owners and operators alike.”
Back among it
A weekend of re-connecting was more important than any podium finishes for Miller. The charismatic speedster spent much of the weekend’s finale chatting with his Superbike co-riders, as well as hundreds of fans young and old.
After a leisurely lap around The Bend to soak it all in, chucking a wave or two to the many spectators who came out to see him, Miller joined the top-three finishers for the race in the winner’s circle for some rousing burnouts on his bike.
Volvo’s hydraulic-hybrid technology delivers an uncomplicated solution with reliable performance and straightforward machine maintenance.
NEW hydraulic hybrid
excavators,
SAME reliable performance
The new Volvo CE EC300E Hybrid Excavator offers a more environmentally-conscious option with improved fuel efficiency, without compromising on performance.
Featuring Volvo’s new innovative and unique hydraulic-hybrid Volvo Technology, the upgraded 30-tonne EC300E Hybrid Excavator harvests and stores the energy generated by the machine’s boom down motion to supercharge the engine system and support the engine torque. The result is an up
to 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption, improved fuel efficiency by up to 17 per cent, and up to 15 per cent less carbon emissions.
Unlike other systems that capture the swing energy to electronically assist the engine, Volvo’s hydraulic hybrid stores the energy of the powerful and regular boom down motions
to charge hydraulic accumulators which then deliver energy to drive hydraulic assist motors to help power the engine system.
Hayden Grant, National Product Manager for Volvo CE at CJD Equipment, highlights that the controllability, reliability, and performance of the new hybrid model
hasn’t been compromised when compared to conventional machines.
Volvo’s hybrid solution is reliable, easy to maintain, and simple to use with just a handful of add-on components. Simply have the ECO mode switch on and away you go. All the operators would see on the dashboard is a small symbol stating that the Hybrid system is working and how much charge is available.
The EC300E Hybrid offers rapid payback and is highly effective when used in dig and dump applications, especially when digging from a bench within a 90° swing. The machine is also able to work in both ECO mode and Hybrid mode simultaneously, with the same levels of controllability and performance. The Hybrid
function is always activated with ECO mode to maximise efficiency. The Hybrid solution reduces the load on the engine, and in the process delivers up to 15 per cent lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance.
In addition to hybrid functionality, the E-series models utilise Volvo’s new D8M engine with Advanced Combustion Technology. The D8M Volvo engine reduces rated rpm from 1800 down to 1600, while also delivering a five per cent increase in power.
Further enhancements to the E-series include a new adjustable boom down speed control, and priority functions to prioritise one function over another, such as boom/swing and boom/ travel. Response times have been enhanced
with an electric control joystick and full electric travel pedals.
Volvo’s unique hydraulic-hybrid technology delivers an uncomplicated solution with reliable performance and straight-forward machine maintenance. It’s a cleaner and greener choice with lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption without compromising on power.

And now Australia’s most popular short radius heavy excavator is available with a proven Isuzu Tier 3 engine, with no DPF and no AdBlue required, reducing operating costs and increasing convenience.
WIN Excavations and Kobelco
Operating machines since he was 17, Billy Strozer knows a thing or two about the earthmoving industry. Having worked for several companies over the years, Billy settled in for the long haul at a company for a 10-year stretch, before finally going out on his own in 2000.
“After working 10 years for the same company, I just wanted to branch out and do my own thing,” explains Billy. “I’ve always kept to the domestic earthmoving and excavation side of things, and have built up a good builder clientele, with some of them being repeat customers for many years now.”
WIN Excavations started with just one small machine, which has now grown to a fleet of 12, with three trucks and a team of five guys behind him. The company has been servicing the Northern Beaches of NSW for over 30 years, with 99 per cent of their work coming from the Palm Beach to Mosman area.
“We do a lot of stuff like pools, driveways, backyard extensions, that sort of thing,” says Billy. The work has been keeping the guys busy, despite the unprecedented rain Sydney has been seeing.
“We have been flat out, and have managed to keep working through most of the rain we have
had, only losing a day or two. We also do a lot of demos and rock excavation work so we could just keep going; it was a savour”.
When it came to Billy buying a new machine for the expanding business, he did his research and realised that the Kobelco SK135 is the market leader in its class for good reason.
“Before making a decision on which excavator to purchase, I did some research on the different machines in the market. The Kobelco 14 tonner outshone its competitors, and for a good price. Now after having one, I haven’t looked back, it’s been a great choice,” Billy says.
The new SK135SR-7 is now available with

a Tier 3 engine, with the no requirement for AdBlue making it a popular choice for those in the market.
“The no AdBlue component was a big draw card. We have a couple of trucks that take AdBlue and it’s such a pain, especially when we are doing jobs on the side of a cliff, and other hard-to-access sites, and have to cart up 20 litres or so of AdBlue. It was another big thing that moved me towards choosing Kobelco.”
Billy says the new machine is easy to operate.
“I’ve also found the new SK135SR-7 really user friendly, to try and select different modes and pump flows and pressures, you almost need to be a pilot for other machines, but without even picking up the handbook, the Kobelco is so straightforward, you can go straight into the instrument cluster and select whatever attachment you’ve got on at the time and select it to that implement to a T.”
The Series 7 excavators have gained notability for their first-class design and levels of comfort, which wasn’t missed by Billy.
“The cab is absolutely amazing, there is room in the back to put an esky, climate control, a radio, I just find it a really good machine to operate. Having the machine delivered and going straight out to work the next day with it, it’s been really good, I’m really impressed.”
“Power wise, it is absolutely flawless, it’s got immense digging power. A recent job I’ve been working on involved operating off the side of a cliff and pulling a large tree stump out, and it just blitzed it, it just ripped it out with ease. The fuel economy is also impressive, especially when I’m sometimes hammering for eight hours a day. Using the pump as much as that does, it’s shown itself to be good on fuel, a big tick.”
WIN Excavations’ local Kobelco dealer, Sydney
Trucks and Machinery has also got Billy’s tick of approval.
“We recently had our first 50-hour service. We had a call from the dealer asking what day suited us and they were there without a hitch. We deal with Peter for sales, he was great, he would return phone calls and keep me in the loop at all times. In this climate where it is hard to get your hands on a new machine, they were able to provide the machine very quickly, and I
needed it promptly. Peter said they could deliver it in 2 weeks, and the machine was delivered the day.”
“I’ll definitely move forward with Kobelco. I run a range of 1.7 to 6 tonners, so on the next changeover I’ll grab another Kobelco and try out their mini excavator range, then see how we go from there. I’m looking forward to adding more of the new colour to the fleet, the Kobelcos blend in nicely with the scenery.”

CRE Group and Cat®
CRE Group has a solid relationship with Cat machinery through dealer, William Adams. This has held the business in good stead, attracting a steady stream of operator talent and continuing to grow.
Words: Jamie Gray
The CRE Group was formed in 2019 by Directors and good friends, Patrick Doheny and Michael Harding. Doheny and Harding were both working for MPK on several pipeline projects for QGC when they made the move to Melbourne, and formed their first earthmoving business in 2014. After selling their interest, they created CRE Group in early 2019 and haven’t looked back.
It seems earthmoving is in the duo’s blood. Doheny himself grew up around machinery, with his father owning a plant hire business at home in Tipperary, Ireland. His first experiences of driving machinery were when his dad showed him the ins and outs of the game at an early age. After decades of developing his skills, Doheny was one of two Australians to win the Asia Regional Cat Global Operator Challenge a few months back in Chichibu, Japan, qualifying to compete against the world’s best at Con-Expo in Las Vegas in 2023.
Opportunity in Australia
When Harding moved to Australia, he quickly found a love for and natural ability in the earthmoving industry. He first worked on oil and gas pipelines in Queensland before making his way south with Doheny to start CRE Group. With Harding’s natural affinity for operating machines and both his and Doheny’s diligent management skills, it’s not surprising to see CRE Group on the road to success and to have already attracted a talent pool of operators.
CRE’s day-to-day operations involve excavators, dump trucks, dozers, loaders, and crushing equipment, moving large amounts of material across numerous sites.
Career highlights and challenges
Both Harding and Doheny have accumulated many highlights in their careers thus far, but when chatting with Doheny about a few standouts, he shared: “Hosting the Dig Deep Event will always be a special memory for us as a company, it was a great day brought together by the earthmoving industry. Also buying our first Cat machine was a surreal moment. It’s great to look back now and see how far we’ve come.”
“We are very lucky to have a team that takes such pride and care in their work, and also have high work ethics,” the duo said.
Running a successful business is no easy feat, and it’s the hard lessons learned that shape the most successful of businesses. Asking Harding and Doheny about their biggest challenges so far, they shared: “Finding the right people for our projects can be tough; everyone’s been affected by labour shortages.
CRE Group hold a high standard for operators, engineers, and project managers and we’re always looking for top quality operators that take as much pride in the machinery as we do.
“We are very lucky to have a team that takes such pride and care in their work, and also have high work ethics. They are a great bunch of lads and we appreciate their effort, skills, and abilities in our Cat fleet.”
Working with William Adams
The team at CRE have been working with William Adams and Cat since they started. They put down their love of the Cat products to their excavators’ and dozers’ great quality, minimal down time, and the high level of customer service and after sale service from William Adams.
“Our very first purchase was a Cat® D6T XW and since then we have moved onto using Cat excavators, dump trucks, dozers, and loaders. It’s been a combination of the power, operator comfort, built-in technology, and reliability that has proved to us that Cat is the right choice for us and our business,” Doheny said.
“The 3D grade control and the auto feature
on the dozer is a necessity with the tolerances we must adhere to in our industry, which for us means less rework on finished levels while increasing speed and accuracy of final trim. By eliminating over and under excavation and reducing the need for personnel on the ground setting out levels and checking design, we can achieve the efficiencies we are looking for as a business.”
Building success through great relationships
The team at CRE have built a great relationship with their William Adams Sales Representative, Michael Mattiacci. Mattiacci has helped Doheny and Harding navigate the road to setting up and running CRE from its inception, with a history that goes back many years prior.
“Michael has always been our rep, we’ve come a long way. He has always been great to deal with and always pushes hard to assist us when needed, and at times we have needed exactly that. It’s been great to know that Michael has our back when we need it. Michael’s experience in the industry is substantial and his product knowledge and perspective is invaluable. We’re forever grateful for the stage we’re at now, and we’ll keep on building the relationships with our current and new clients,” the CRE duo shared.
“We plan to build our management team and continue to grow, with the same values as when we first started using our expertise to provide earthmoving services for our clients Australia wide. We have great peace of mind knowing that both Michael, William Adams and Cat are behind us to help us achieve our goals. We
see William Adams as a partner, and we will continue to work closely with them on future projects.” When asking Harding and Doheny what advice they would share with their younger selves or other companies starting out in the industry, they shared: “Surround yourself with good people, enjoy the journey, stay focused, and the sacrifices you make along the way certainly pay off.”
Spot-on advice for anyone looking to make a success of themselves in any industry!
While in Melbourne, spending the day with the CRE boys, we also caught up with Mattiacci. We had a chance to chew the fat and see what was happening in the world of William Adams and the relationship with the CRE team.
“I’ve been in equipment sales and the Government, Waste & Rail industries for 11 years now, and I’ve known Patrick and his brother since 2017. The boys’ first machine purchase from me was a D6T dozer and 330F excavator (both with 3D) back in 2018. For a lot of operators and businesses deciding to step out on their own, this is an important part of the journey - and being able to take care of the CRE team at this stage has been a pleasure,” he shared.
“New Next Generation excavators have been a game changer for people who need 3D. Matching up new Cat gear with the latest technologies with the CRE operators – who I’ve found to be amongst the best I’ve come
across – is going to be a great milestone for CRE. I’ve been lucky enough to build a good relationship with both Michael and Patrick, and it’s always a great indication of their level of professionalism when I see how well they look after their machines.”
According to Mattiacci, due to his customer base the workload has been at a fever pitch like many others in the industry.
“Now, my role is also involved with Victoria’s Big Build projects, namely North East Link, so the pressure for me is only increasing,” he said. “But it’s the challenges and the reward of working with, and helping build, our clients’ businesses and achieve their goals that makes it all worth it.”
With Doheny heading off to Con-Expo early next year as one of the two Australians that could win the Cat® Global Operator Challenge, you would think that he would be a stand-out operator at CRE. But it’s clear after chatting with Mattiacci that he is just one of a very talented bunch at CRE. However, it’s also safe to say that his money is on Doheny to take out the Cat Operator Challenge title, this coming March.
Vast Earthworks and Cat® Equipment
Vast Earthworks is a classic Australian success story where two hardworking blokes, each with their own unique experience and skillsets come together to create an impressive business. It prides itself on not only the quality of its work, customer experience and machinery, but also the day-to-day experience for its operators. It’s a recipe built for success that retains staff and keeps customers satisfied.
It was Director Jon Lorenz who started the company five years ago, taking on small electrical jobs which required his own excavator.
“I developed solid relationships with builders in the area that led me to taking on site cuts. From there, as they say, the rest is history,” Jon shared.
“As the company has evolved, Jayden Kraft has joined Vast Earthworks as a shareholder and Director to help expand the company into the civil construction space. Jayden has an extensive background in earthmoving and civil construction, having being raised in a civil construction family.”
Vast Earthworks’ strong connection with Cat equipment has led to ongoing success for the business. Here’s how.Jon Lorenz started Vast Earthworks five years ago by taking on small electrical jobs. Left to right: Daniel Neal, WesTrac; Jon Lorenz, Vast Earthworks; and Jayden Kraft, Vast Earthworks.
The great Australian dream
There’s something that amazing about the earthmoving industry when you meet great guys like Jon and Jayden, who have put in the hard work early in their careers, learnt their skillsets, then decided to have a go on their own and are kicking goals. It’s the great Australian dream – and after spending a day with them, they couldn’t be a better team to give it a crack and achieve ongoing success. With their impressive fleet of Cat® machines and great relationship with WesTrac rep, Daniel Neal, it seems the Vast team have all the pieces in place to successfully build into the future.
Jon started his career in the construction industry as a commercial electrician. After a few years in the commercial space, he sought to learn new skills which led him to the gas fields. From there, he was introduced to the world of earthmoving and soon purchased a farm excavator, which quickly became more than a hobby. He decided to make the switch into earthmoving and hasn’t looked back since.
Career highlights
Chatting with Jon about both his highlights and biggest challenges of his career thus far, he said: “The highlight of my career is ongoing, each day looking at what Vast Earthworks and our team has accomplished brings me a great sense of fulfilment and pride.
“By far the biggest challenge has been the wet weather that we have received over the past 18 months in Canberra. It has been relentless, with record rain falls two years running. Hats off to everyone that is in the same position, keeping machines moving to put food on the table for their workers.”
When it comes to machinery, you will
struggle to meet two more dedicated Cat equipment owners who are on the exact same page about the multi-layered benefits of using Cat machinery. From attracting and keeping the best operators who want to work in Cat machines, to presenting themselves to clients as a top shelf company, the duo give clients confidence with world-class onsite

The latest purchase, the Cat Next Gen 305 CR, has brought the power and technologies the Vast team needs with the benefit of a zero turn for use in tight areas, filling a gap in Vast’s fleet. After watching and filming Jayden work in the Cat Next Gen 305 CR, he is so dialled into the precision controls and technologies that it looked like an extension of himself. It was smooth and impressive to watch.
Cat Next Gen 305 CR Mini Excavator
After filming Jayden put the new Cat Next Gen 305 CR Mini Excavator through its paces, EEM pulled him aside for a chat about what it’s like to work with Cat gear. “Our Cat fleet consists of 11 machines including a D6T dozer, 924K loader, seven excavators, a 259D compact track loader and a 242D skid steer, with the latest being our new 305, which has been an excellent addition to our fleet. Its reduced size and compact footprint allows us to get into the tighter areas we need, most of which has been purchased out of the WesTrac Hume branch,” he said. “The tech we incorporate in our day-to-day would have to be Cat Grade. We utilise as much technology as possible when taking on jobs, as it improves our overall job productivity levels. We have three full 3D GPS excavators and one 2D system. Although the 2D system is not available as a factory option for all machines
at this point, we see that once the option becomes available it will be a game changer. Technology and local service resources are extremely important for us – the power of Cat grade technology and the ease of having our equipment on FitFleet Customer Value
Agreement (CVA) is what drove us to move our fleet to yellow.”
Jon and Jayden had a Cat Next Gen 306 CR for about 12 months and have been more than impressed with it, but they wanted a slightly more compact version of it to tackle some
smaller jobs while retaining the breakout force, so the recent purchase of the Cat Next Gen 305 CR has been an addition that has filled a gap in their fleet with great results.
“We always spec out our excavators with tilt hitches and a full fleet of buckets to ensure we can tackle any job given to us,” Jon said. “We pride ourselves on ensuring that we have the latest fleet with a broad range of assets, to ensure we have the capabilities to take on all aspects of civil. Every machine we purchase helps us to achieve this. We felt that the Cat Next Gen 305 CR is a great compact excavator that fits in tight spots and has the creature comforts that we expect of a next gen excavator.”
Working with WesTrac rep, Daniel Neal
The Vast team has been building a great relationship with their WesTrac sales rep, Daniel Neal, who has been servicing them for the past two and a half years. Prior to Daniel
working in the greater Canberra region, Vast had purchased a few different machines over the years. Working with WesTrac to identify the best machines for the job, Vast has turned their fleet almost completely yellow.
“Daniel has been great to deal with and we look forward to working with him as our fleet grows. This relationship has given us the confidence to continue growing our fleet. We can make a quick call and get the information that we need to make important decisions on future requirements, lead times, costs, and options,” Jayden said.
“We see Vast Earthworks expanding into larger civil construction projects as our fleet grows, while not sacrificing on our quality or company culture. It is our goal to provide quality services and establish a reputation within the industry as a leading civil contractor that has unmatched workplace values, culture, and attention to detail. To achieve this, we will need the right team and
partners, latest technology, and machinery with quality servicing.”
He said the Vast team sees its relationship with WesTrac as an important part of its future.
“We have invested in FitFleet and have seen great value in doing so because now we have the confidence to grow our fleet through the My.Cat.Com portal, knowing that they have a great local facility that can service our needs.”
It’s all about relationships and customer service
When discussing what the Vast-WesTrac partnership has been like over the past two and a half years, Daniel shared: “I’ve been with WesTrac now for six years as a sales rep, and I love my job and the experience of getting to work with good blokes like Jon, Jayden, and the Vast team.
“It’s been a busy time with the Vast team
purchasing a 306, two 315s, a 323, 308 and 305. Operator familiarity has been a big benefit, as most of the fleet are now Cat Next Gen machines and the ease of use and operator knowledge is high.
“Operator comfort and efficiency means they can move from job to job in the same day, and the operator still feels fresh and not fatigued.”
Daniel speaks to the Vast team frequently, maintaining a great channel of communication.
“Vast pride themselves on having the best of everything – whether it’s their diggers, operators, cars or trucks, this choice enables them to work safely while making impressive progress for their clients,” he said.
With both Jayden and Jon so focused on keeping their clients and operators as happy as possible, and with plenty of work on the radar for the Vast team over the foreseeable future, it seems the Canberra region is going to keep Vast’s fleet busy, with more machine purchases on the cards for 2023.
SKID STEERS/TRACK LOADERS
Ditch Witch SK900 stand-on skid-steer
The SK series from Ditch Witch is a range of six construction-grade skid steers, and the SK900 is the newest model in the Australian line up.
There are some very impressive features throughout the range, including zero daily greasing requirements, high ground clearance, and a unique high-drive track system that has bolt-on sprockets and track rollers for easy serviceability, and also provides increased traction and better stability. All track rollers are replaceable, a feature unique to Ditch Witch, and all have a low-maintenance tracktensioning system, attachment plates which will carry a wide array of attachments, and the biggest stand-on platform in the industry.
But the SK900 has a few innovations and specifics which make it an even more efficient and harder-working machine.
Power where it’s needed
The SK900 runs a Yanmar 24hp turbo diesel motor, and in combination with a new hydraulic system and ground drive, it punches well above its weight.
Scott O’Hare, National Product Manager for Ditch Witch, shared some of the positive points of the newest SK.
“The Yanmar engine runs at a lower rpm than similar machines,” O’Hare explained. “So it runs much quieter than other units in the 24hp to 32hp class in the Australian market.
“The SK900 also features a new hydraulic pump and higher torque drive motors. That basically means tractive effort is greater than other machines in its class. It will become very noticeable in applications where more pushing power is required, allowing operators to get more out of their machine while maintaining a smaller footprint.”
SK900 key features
• Runs quieter at lower rpm;
• Throttle paddle lever;
• Troubleshooting code gauge;
• Optional side shields and hood guard; and
• Easy refuel with lockable-cap option.
New and improved
As with all the Ditch Witch SK skid steers, the SK900 has the same ground-drive speed in forward and reverse, but the newest model also features a trouble-shooting code gauge on the
time. There’s no need to hook up a diagnostic tool. There’s also a new paddle throttle in lieu of a mechanical lever, and O’Hare points out it’s a bonus.
“There’s no adjustment required for it. It’s a more reliable set up and easier to use,” he said. Where the other models in the Ditch Witch SK range have a steel guard which flips down and secures the fuel filler cap, the SK900 is available with a locking cap, speeding up access and making refuelling faster and easier.
The SK900 is clearly going to be well suited to the Australian landscaping industry.
“For landscape contractors who are using the SK900 in applications like digging, loading trucks and preparing surfaces, having the additional ground-drive torque is very important,” O’Hare pointed out. “They’re the operators who’ll see a big benefit from the SK900.”

Steering towards growth
LH Excavations has expanded its business by starting a new equipment hire arm. When owner Lee Heares needed reliable steer skids to add to the hire fleet – he went straight to Toyota Material Handling Australia.
The legendary reliability and performance of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) is helping booming excavations business, LH Excavations, as it establishes its own hire fleet of machines.
Based in Sydney, LH Excavations purchased a pair of Toyota Huski skid steer loaders as part of a business expansion that includes opening its own equipment hiring arm, LH Hire.
Since opening seven years ago, LH Excavations has used equipment from a variety of manufacturers but has chosen to add TMHA to its roster to support the LH Hire business.
Lee Heares, the owner of LH Excavations, said that he needed dependable steer skids his fleet business that could be depended upon to work day-in, day-out. With previous experience using Toyota equipment, Lee knew that TMHA could deliver.
“I’ve hired their gear through other people before – they’re just good, simple, reliable machines, they’re very easy to use,” he said.
The exceptional reliability and mechanical simplicity of the Huski skid steers made them the perfect fit for the hire fleet, which will likely also be called upon to assist the excavation side of the business.
“I just like that it’s very simple,” Lee said. “A lot of the gear coming out now is all computerised, there’s too much to fail.
He added that his experience has shown Huskis to be “tough” and “reliable” machines.
“Every machine I’ve been in with the Huskis, they’re always going, they’ve never broken down.”
TMHA area sales manager Peter Bower added noted that the reliability and mechanical simplicity of Toyota skid steers were common
reasons for purchase, due to the critical importance of having functional workplace equipment.
“Simplicity is what a lot of people like about our products,” Peter said. “I would say the majority of our customers come to us for things like that. They are very effective and very reliable.”
LH has ordered two Huski skid steer loaders – a 3.1-tonne 5SDK8 and a smaller 1.1-tonne 4SDK4 unit perfect for smaller applications like backyard DIY.
Lee said LH Excavations spotted an opportunity to expand its business after finding
itself regularly lending out its equipment. “The idea was pretty much borne from requests from others to use our gear,” he said. “We could see there was a demand in the market for a new offering.”
“Having the excavation business and then having people asking to loan the gear out, we saw the opportunity to start a hire company, and it’s taken off pretty well.”
Lee said he would happily recommend TMHA to others in the industry, remarking that any company offering machines with the quality of his Toyota Huski units would get his blessing. He also praised the easy and hassle-free relationship developed with TMHA, thanks to the help provided by Peter.
This is only the beginning of a great journey for LH Excavations, said Lee, with ambitions to grow its business and add more units to its hire operation.
“We don’t want to be a small company, we want to strive to be someone bigger,” he said.
“The doors aren’t shut for us in terms of growing, so it’s just the time now to keep the cash flow high and keep buying more machines.”
LH Excavations started seven years ago as a one-man operation, with Lee getting his start when a friend bought him a machine to excavate his house.
Slowly buying machines and taking on new workers, Lee and his partner Eleni Kamper expanded the business to the point where it now employs six staff in Sydney’s southern suburbs.

ALLU Buckets bring game changing versatility
Efficient material flow is vital to the success of any earthmoving enterprise and any improvements made in this area reflect positively on the bottom line of the P&L.
The ALLU series of screener crusher buckets, powered by the carrier they are mounted on, offer a solution for operators to reduce their material double handling needs.
The secret of the ALLU bucket range lies in its versatility.
Instead of requiring fixed plant to screen material on jobsites – which can be time consuming to transport and set up, with up to three trucks often required – the ALLU buckets attach to existing machinery and are ready to operate.
The buckets are also universal, meaning they can be transported wherever required before attaching to the machine and being put to work.
The ALLU buckets are manufactured in Finland and are built for efficient material processing. They can process any material that is able to be screened and sorted, such as demolition and construction waste, excavated and waste soil, contaminated soil, clay, peat, bark, compost, bio-waste and more.
“They’re probably the simplest bucket. They have the biggest range of different componentry on the market,” QLD Rock Breakers product specialist Craig Einam said.
In the buckets, motors are placed inside the frame to avoid damage caused by external material, while lubrication inside the chain boxes ensures a long lifetime for the transmission.
The buckets screen material without backand-forth rotation to produce a homogenous end product, even with wet materials. Both the D Series and DL Series feature Allu’s TS drum, which is available in 16mm or 25mm options, as well as a stabilising drum that is 50mm for the DL Series or 25, 40 or 60mm on the D Series.
The ALLU Transformer range is very popular within the pipeline industry in Australia. For example, if a pipeline were to be built between Dalby and Gladstone – an area spanning 478km – each joint in the line would require a guaranteed size of material to put back in the trenches, Einam explained.
“You can’t just push sticks and things back into the trench, they have to be screened,” he said.
“And because the ALLU buckets are an onsite screening bucket, you just hook it up to one machine.”
While the ALLU Transformer series is already making progress in the pipeline sector in Australia, Einam is hopeful of expanding the brand’s footprint in civil construction as a
By having an ALLU Transformer bucket available at the ready, civil workers wouldn’t have to move material offsite to be screened before hauling it back and reusing it. Instead, the processing bucket can screen the material right there.
“The push that we have here is into the civil construction and earthmoving industry, where they can repurpose material on site,” Einam said.
“They don’t have to truck it off, truck it back, or bring fixed plant on, which is expensive. They can quickly repurpose material. They might only do a week’s work on one site and then they can move to the next site. And they save a lot of money by not transporting material. Dump fees and transport costs are another big cost today on job sites.”
ALLU Tracker to measure performance
The ALLU Tracker, launched to the market last year, is an effective tool for measuring performance and knowing where the equipment is located. It eliminates the need for lots of manual time keeping, and owners and operators can understand the performance of their equipment.
The ALLU Tracker works with all ALLU attachments and can be fitted to all models. The benefit of having the tracker is you know where your equipment is by GPS pinpointing, and geo fencing. This gives you the ability to understand what your equipment is doing, and its last known location.
machine is doing, you can manage your working load effectively, including operational hours and operational ability. The ALLU Tracker stores all information sent over to an easy-to-use dashboard, and the data is stored in the cloud including with the last known location.
ALLU network
ALLU products are distributed to over 30 countries around the world and in Australia through a nationwide network, servicing major infrastructure projects including water and gas. The versatile ALLU system is quickly making inroads with civil and composting contractors.

Flipscreen: The screening hero your carrier needs
Upgrading from a basic skeleton bucket to the Flipscreen screening bucket can offer more advantages than either sticking with your current model or purchasing a more expensive replacement.
Are you a proud owner of an excavator looking to increase efficiency on your job site and make the most out of each workday?
The Flipscreen offers numerous advantages that are absent when using traditional skeleton buckets – from increased speed and accuracy to lower operational costs, this technology is revolutionising how operators tackle excavation. With this specialised attachment, you can easily process bulk materials into usable products – all at the flip of a bucket. No matter what type of excavation project you’re embarking on, this single piece of machinery has all the power and functionality you need for efficient material handling.
Opting for this superior product is worth it. Let’s explore the differences between these two tools and explain why, when it comes to performance, versatility, and value for money, a Flipscreen simply can’t be beaten.
The theory vs the reality of skeleton buckets
The theory behind skeleton buckets is that you roll the contents back and forth until it’s separated. But this rarely works out in practice.
Most operators end up jerking the lever back and forth to shake the material until it works through the holes in the skeleton bucket, which places massive maintenance responsibilities on the carrier machine. This causes immense damage to both the hydraulics of the excavator and to the machine itself. This kind of damage can be costly to repair or replace, so it’s best avoided if possible.
An alternative solution: The Flipscreen
Fortunately, there’s a much better solution available if you’re looking for an efficient screening bucket for your excavator: the
output rates of up to three times higher than a normal skeleton bucket. Not only will you save money on repairs or replacements with this tool, but it can greatly increase the productivity of excavator operations, allowing for faster and more efficient completion of projects.
One of the key advantages of the Flipscreen screening bucket is its ability to quickly and easily switch between different screening sizes (in less than five minutes). This allows the operator to tailor the screening process to the specific needs of the job at hand, ensuring the desired sizes are collected and processed.
The Flipscreen is also able, with a screen change, to mix concrete, seed and other mixes.
This makes it an ideal tool for a wide range of excavator operations, from small-scale residential projects to large-scale commercial and industrial operations. The Flipscreen can also be used as a standard, no-spill bucket that can load trucks. It has zero daily maintenance models. Also, using high tensile steel construction the Flipscreen can screen any material, such as scrap, rocks and reinforced concrete. Fully sealed hydraulic motors also allow fully functional use underwater for washing or dredging.
With the ability to handle a wider range of tasks and process materials more quickly and efficiently, a Flipscreen can provide a better return on investment over time. This means that, even though it may cost more upfront, a Flipscreen can save you money in the long run by reducing labour costs, increasing productivity, and maximising your profits.
In conclusion, when it comes to excavating and material handling, a Flipscreen is a much better purchase than a skeleton bucket.
Skeleton buckets may seem like an attractive option due to their low cost compared to other alternatives, but ultimately they do more harm than good. Not only do they cause serious damage, but they also have significantly lower output rates than more modern tools like the Flipscreen, which offers a range of benefits that make it a superior choice.

When Rammer invented the world’s largest rockbreaker
Since the ‘king rockbreaker’ Rammer S800 was invented in 1978, the large rockbreaker specialist has continued to innovate to become a leading supplier of smart rockbreaker technology.
Rammer was established in Lahti, Finland in 1978 and company founder Teuvo Gronfors had a goal to develop an industry-changing hydraulic rockbreaker of a new size class.
Hydraulic rockbreakers manufactured by competitors at the time were designed mainly for breaking softer rocks, such as limestone found in central and southern Europe, and could not be used to break large boulders. Thus, large boulders had to be broken by drilling and blasting methods that were arduous, dangerous and slow.
Rammer’s founder envisioned the rockbreaker they were developing to be about twice as large as other available breakers, which would be able to break large boulders with ease.
The goal was to design and manufacture the largest and most efficient hydraulic rockbreaker on the market with unbeatable quality, operational reliability and that were capable of breaking hard Scandinavian soil and large granite boulders.
The cold winter and hard rock formations of Finland provided an excellent test environment – when a hydraulic rockbreaker can handle the Finnish conditions, it can handle anything.
On 8 March 1978, after an unbelievably fast-paced design and product development, Rammer introduced the Rammer S800, a ‘king rockbreaker,’ the likes of which the global market had not yet seen.
The Rammer S800 was the world’s largest hydraulic rockbreaker and it started without a hitch; the technical design had been a remarkable success.
Breaking innovations since 1978
Rammer had become a large rockbreaker specialist but continuous product development, innovations and increasing number of patent applications saw Rammer become a leading supplier of smart rockbreaker technology.
In the mid-1980s, tunnelling with a hydraulic rockbreaker was considered a crazy idea. But Rammer proved the effectiveness of its rockbreakers in Italy, where the first tunnel quarried with Rammer hydraulic rockbreakers was around 100 sqm in cross-sectional area and 250m in length.
Quarrying tunnels with a hydraulic rockbreaker was a significant invention that provided an efficient alternative to the conventional drilling and blasting methods, with an added advantage of being able to quarry and dispose of the rubble at the same time.
The first rockbreaker manufacturer to introduce dust binding technology, Rammer’s jet dust binding technology was integrated into the rockbreaker to reduce the amount of dust rising into the air from quarrying.
This made work easier, especially in tunnelling operations where dust floating around in
restricted spaces bothered the workers and created an occupational safety hazard. During the years, Rammer has introduced many innovations, some of which are still unique in the market, such as the ‘Constant Blow Energy’ operating principle. This allows easy plug-and-play installation and automatically adapts itself to maintain the highest impact power and efficiency.
Rammer’s competitive advantages were, and still are, a high level of quality, reliability and the rockbreaker’s long service life.

Dimensions that matter
MB Crusher buckets can transform a construction site into a recycling centre.
Construction sites – whether small or large – generate waste. Inert materials of all kinds have to find a new life, a new use, considering the difficulty in finding raw materials and the time it takes to get them. Is it possible to recover waste and put it back into the production cycle in a simple, fast, and cost-effective way?
Many may not know the solution lies in the carrier machine already on-site, combined with an MB Crusher bucket to work the material so that it can be immediately reused or repurposed for other uses.
Whether the excavator is large or small, an MB jaw crusher is easily installed, allowing you to directly reduce the grain size of the material on site.
There is always an MB Crusher that can be used to create a recycling centre, which allows the company to be independent in material procurement. The cost of producing the recycled aggregate is also much lower than that of purchasing virgin aggregate. It is great for the environment and complies with the latest regulations issued in various countries regarding the use of recycled aggregates.

Fecon forestry mulchers for excavators and skid steers
Fecon’s range of forestry mulchers are made with premium quality steel and are engineered to tackle any Australian timber, harnessing unmatched power and durability.
Fecon is one of the world’s premier manufacturers of forestry attachments and machines, globally renowned for building the toughest attachments in the industry. Furthermore, with national supplier Fecon Australia, customers throughout Australia receive world-famous forestry machines backed by only the best local service, support, parts and sales.
Fecon mulchers
Designed to be powerful and versatile, Fecon mulchers are perfectly engineered to suit a wide variety of track and skid steer loaders offering anywhere from 53 up to 191 LPM of hydraulic flow, plus mini and large excavators sized from 5 tonnes and above.
Fecon mulchers satisfy the three key requirements in a forestry attachment: durability, performance, and value for money. By combining innovative engineering, premium quality steel, reinforced rotors and mulching teeth, and exceptional welding processes, the mulchers deliver strength and longevity.
Variable motor speeds also maximise the overall performance of Fecon mulchers. For lighter material loads, higher RPM means more bites per second and finer material sizing, and with heavier material the mulcher delivers more rotor torque, keeping the rotor turning when other heads may stall.
Excavator mulcher models
Fecon Bull Hog mulchers are available to suit mini excavators as small as 5 tonnes in size, up to heavy 45 tonne excavators.
Perhaps Fecon’s most popular excavator mulcher models, the FMX36 and FMX50 operate a unique split ring rotor system and Rexroth variable speed hydraulic motor, delivering a consistently fine end chip size. Suitable for excavators 5-15 tonnes with 45 to 151 litres per minute of flow, the primary difference between models is the 1118mm (FMX36) versus 1473mm (FMX50) overall widths, offering greater needs-based options for operators.
In addition, within this 5-15 tonnes size class, Fecon also offers a CEM36 model – with similar size specifications compared to the FMX models, the primary differentiator for the CEM26 model is the rotor: instead of the FMX style rotor, the CEM36 comes with your choice of either a Depth Control (DCR) or Fecon Grinding Teeth (FGT) rotor. The DCR option delivers a very fine chip size and is primarily suited to aerial work with minimal ground engagement, whereas the FGT rotor creates a larger chip size but is more robust for ground engagement work.
Moving up in excavator size class, Fecon offers the BH47 and BH62 models for 12-20 tonne machines, as well as the BH40, BH80 and BH200 models for 15-45 tonne diggers. All models include premium Rexroth variable displacement motors in various configurations and power output capacities.
The BH47 model is available with your choice of DCR and FGT rotor as detailed above, and 18 cutting tools on its rotor. The BH62 tolerates a higher hydraulic flow rate for more powerful performance, is available with an FGT rotor and 24 cutting tools, and also your choice of either a 107V or 160V motor.
Fecon’s BH40, BH80 and BH200 are the largest models available to suit heavy excavators 15-45 tonnes in size. Each model comes with your choice of DCR or FGT rotor and various motor voltage outputs. These models are built extremely robust to handle virtually any timber mulching requirement, offering unmatched durability, performance and overall quality.
Skid steer mulcher models
Fecon Australia’s range of premium skid steer mulchers is nationally renowned for its versatility, performance and reliability.
Staples of the Fecon SSL Mulcher range for more than a decade, the BH85 and BH74 models for high flow skid steers remain ever popular in the forestry and construction industry.
With premium Rexroth motors and hydraulic trap doors as standard, plus your choice of Depth Control or FGT rotor, the Fecon BH85 and BH74 offer the same exceptional performance and reliability, primarily differentiated by their widths – 85 inch (2160mm) versus 74 inch (1880mm) – to suit various operational requirements and access widths.
More recent additions to the Fecon skid steer mulcher range are the smaller RK5015 and RK6015 models, which are designed to suit machines with less hydraulic flow. Requiring only 52 litres per minute or more of hydraulic to run, Fecon have revolutionised the forestry industry with these models as operators can now run a premium Fecon mulcher on smaller machines.
The RK5015 and RK6015 offer similar premium features – a split ring FMX rotor for a consistent and fine chip size, adaptable mounting plates to suit any brand of machine, and a Rexroth hydraulic motor – and vary based on their 1550mm (RK5015) versus 1803mm (RK6015) working widths, containing 22 and 26 cutting tools respectively.
As a result, for any mid-to-large size skid steer owner or operator undertaking forestry or vegetation management works, Fecon Australia have the ideal mulching attachment to suit your needs. Fecon mulchers are built tough for Australian conditions, delivering maximum performance, productivity and durability.

Fresh features include an interactive display screen offering the operator constant awareness of machine performance and diagnostics, enhanced head, shoulder, knee and foot space in the cab, and easier access in and out of the door. Already extremely popular machines, these new improvements solidify the RT-40 and RT-50 models as two of Australia’s favourite CTLs.
Undercarriage
Undercarriages on ASV compact track loaders are mounted to torsion axles which suspend machine weight and allow controlled movement up and down.
The suspension on ASV compact track loaders improves stability and absorbs impacts for increased operator comfort and machine durability. This design also keeps the track on the ground to improve digging and maximise traction. When combined with the machine’s superior balance and longest track base in the industry, this machine offers excellent grading capabilities.
In addition, ASV’s unique roller wheels distribute weight evenly across a large ground contact area, significantly reducing ground pressure and increasing traction. Made of a durable UHMW polyethylene moulded directly to the hub and coated with a final layer of rubber to provide the perfect balance of a strong centre core and the needed track cushioning that results in premium ride and long life, ASV wheels are a customer-focused and distinctive innovation.
ASV compact track loaders also use an internal positive drive in the undercarriage, which efficiently transfers tractive effort from the power train to the rubber tracks. Independent drive motors turn sprockets, which subsequently engage the drive lugs on the inside of the rubber tracks. This low-friction design maximises power transfer, conserving engine power for other machine functions.
Wear between sprockets and track lugs is minimized through free-turning steel roller sleeves on the drive sprocket teeth. Wide sprockets – three to five times wider than competitive designs – and an open support frame that sheds material, keep the sprockets lasting longer. When it is time to replace, the bolt-on rollers keep your costs below traditional non-serviceable designs.
Customer support
In addition to a premium nationwide service and parts network and 25 local dealers throughout Australia, ASV also offers an industry-leading two-year warranty on all Posi-Track Loaders, plus comprehensive operational support from our expert product representatives throughout the machine’s entire life.

The JCB Teleskid – a true all-rounder
The all-new JCB Teleskid is the first skid steer or compact tracked loader with a telescopic boom, making it an extremely versatile and robust machine.
Providing 1.7m reach at full height, the JCB Teleskid allows operators to dump debris into a variety of hard-to-reach locations, while conventional skid steers struggle to attain similar heights. The Teleskid’s centralised lift and extension rams evenly distribute load stresses. The rams are held in place by keyhole castings to ensure structural integrity of the machine is not compromised.
Featuring a solid undercarriage with cast steel, triple flanged rollers, the Teleskid provides excellent track retention.
The JCB telescopic boom has a proven track record on over 200,000 machines produced to date. JCB conducts an extreme testing program on all machines that includes prolonged high stress loading, cold climate testing and repeated transmission use over thousands of cycles. To ensure it is ready for the toughest of assignments, the Teleskid’s boom is mounted on a single-piece fully welded chassis to maximise strength and minimise weight. Featuring high strength steel, the boom has reduced joints, stress points and a single piece u-pressed design.
With a vertical reach of over 13ft and a forward reach of 8ft, the JCB Teleskid is able to reach higher, further and deeper than any other skid steer on the market, allowing it to access areas you wouldn’t have thought possible in a traditional skid steer.
The JCB Teleskid’s lift capacity can handle the heaviest of loads, and its unique design ensures operators can quickly and easily load over obstacles or reach 3ft below ground, allowing users to rip out trees and roots with ease. The JCB Teleskid is also the only skid steer loader/ compact track loader on the market with true bi-directional and extendable parallel lift, while its zero turning radius allowing operators to work in the tightest of spaces.
Easily transported between sites on a trailer, the JCB Teleskid can do the work of four machines – a forklift, telescopic handler, compact loader and of course a skid steer, providing unbeatable productivity.
The JCB Teleskid offers 270 degrees of visibility from within the cabin, thanks to its large front windshield which can easily be removed for a quick exit in case of an emergency. Meanwhile, the recessed rear door gives increased protection from damage. Its side door entry ensures there’s no clambering over a loaded bucket or a bulky attachment to get into the machine.
Fitted with a proven JCB EcoMAX engine, the JCB Teleskid provides increased performance at low engine speed for improved cycle
times. With greater tractive force than a small telehandler or forklift, the JCB Teleksid has greater pushing power, even in sticky conditions.

Overcoming the biggest challenges with John Deere electric equipment
EEM discovers how John Deere is delivering more customer value with less environmental impact.
By 2026, John Deere will offer more than 20 models of electric construction equipment, as well as electric compact utility tractors, commercial and residential mowers, and Gator utility vehicles.
Why? Because its customers demand more from their equipment. They want:
• Performance and reliability;
• Quieter, easier, and intuitive operation;
• Total cost of ownership advantages, including government incentives, where applicable;
• Reduced complexity and simplified maintenance;
• Technology enablement and scaling; and
• Reduced C02 emissions.
“We’ve started this journey to solve customer pain points and deliver value,” John Deere Product Manager for Electrification Derek Muller said. “With zero emission products, there are new assumptions customers have on what products will be capable of. They want that next generation user experience that we plan to deliver.”
Muller said customers are facing more challenges and market pressures than ever before.
“Whether it’s our customers in construction or agriculture, they face similar challenges such as the lack of skilled labour, rising input costs, and tight deadlines,” Muller noted. “Through
our electric line-up of products, we’ll look to solve for those by reducing operational and maintenance costs, delivering powerful and reliable performance, and intuitive operation.”
What revolutionary impact will this have?
“It will fundamentally change how ag producers look at job steps,” Muller said. “The more producers reduce the cost of their operations, the more flexibility it gives them to make more passes in the field, essentially doing more with less.
“They can manage yield and plant health on a more frequent basis, enabled by the cost of that pass being so low. They are no longer exposed to fuel costs. Producers can focus on the health of the plants and animals, and truly optimise the material inputs such as fertilisers, chemicals, and feeds.”
Early in 2022, John Deere acquired majority ownership in Kreisel Electric, an Austrian company pioneering in immersion-cooled battery technology, which provides extended battery life, efficiency in extreme climates, modular design, and mechanical stability.
Laying the groundwork to leap into the future
John Deere is not new to providing its customers with hybrid-electric equipment.
For almost a decade, construction customers have realised the benefits of Deere’s hybridelectric E-Drive loaders, and last year customers in the utilities market began testing a fully electric E-Power Backhoe.
“John Deere foresaw the market’s need for a machine like the 944K (a hybrid-electric loader) and had all the engineering in line to roll it out before anyone else,” Winter Brothers plant manager Jerry Gunter said, in West Babylon, New York. “I’m excited to learn what the folks at Deere are working on for their next generation of machines.”
A choice to be made
It will be up to customers to decide which piece of equipment works best for them: the zeroemission option or a traditional one. John Deere employees are committed to ensuring each customer has the option that will overcome the challenges they face.
“As a leader in many industries , we are stepping up to the challenge, and we will continue to innovate to deliver solutions that solve our customer paint points and deliver value,” Muller said. “That’s what we’ve been doing for over 180 years, and our customers expect nothing less.”

Introducing the Tigercat 6900 Grinder
Tigercat officially introduces the 6900 grinder – the first regular production offering in Tigercat’s material processing category.
The 6900 is the first production grinder designed and built by Tigercat. The 6900 is a heavy-duty upswing grinder made for high throughput material reduction and mulch production.
With Tigercat’s legendary build quality, the 6900 is designed for extreme duty and long life, utilising only the highest quality components. The upswing rotor and large infeed opening with outward wing walls maximise processing capacity.
The grinder’s upper frame pivots on the undercarriage, allowing the operator to adjust the infeed angle or discharge height for
different material lengths. The adjustable angle eliminates the need for outriggers. The pivoting upper frame allows transport on a 46cm (18inch) lowboy trailer without the need to fold the discharge conveyor.
The machine has remote control functions for simple operation and mobility on site, along with an easy-to-use 25cm (10-inch) display screen for machine monitoring and function adjustment.
Maintenance is made easy with convenient service access. The split hog box opens over centre to fully access the rotor and screens. The anvil and screens are hydraulically retractable.
The single discharge conveyor is open on the bottom for clean operation and easy servicing. A tool storage area is mounted on the side of the machine that hydraulically raises and lowers for added convenience.
An optional large diameter magnetic head pulley is available to effectively remove metal from the end product. The machine is also prepared to accept over-band magnet systems.

KMH not looking back after LiuGong jump
Adding a growing construction-equipment brand in Australia to its heavy-industry fleet was not without risk for Karratha Machinery Hire (KMH), located in Western Australia’s rugged Pilbara region.
After a year of trouble-free operation working in some of the most isolated and inhospitable conditions in the country, KMH General Manager Steve Griffiths has nothing but praise for their new LiuGong machines.
“In the hire game, keeping customers happy is the main priority, so you can’t afford to have second-rate machinery, particularly in the north-west, where equipment is working in a very harsh environment,” Steve said.
“Some of the newer brands, for a variety of reasons, have a different reputation to the main players in heavy equipment, but the customers who have experienced the LiuGong machinery have been genuinely impressed.”
Built for purpose
Established in 1989 and recently acquired by SSH Group, KMH is today one of the largest plant-hire businesses in the Pilbara, with
more than 140 machines available, from heavy earthmoving equipment through to trucks and trailers.
The most recent additions to the fleet are a 30-tonne LiuGong 930E excavator, a multiwheel LiuGong 6520E roller and a LiuGong 6615E vibrating drum roller, all delivered in late 2021 by McIntosh & Son in Perth.
The purchases came off the back of a Dig, Ride and Drive Day at Perth’s Belmont
Racecourse in October 2021, organised by McIntosh & Son to showcase the LiuGong range.
“McIntosh reached out and invited us to test out the three machines we were considering purchasing and it was just a great opportunity to physically see and experience the equipment,” Steve said.
It is the first time KMH has acquired the brand, but Steve is in no doubt LiuGong machines will again be under consideration as the company’s fleet continues to grow.
“We looked at LiuGong a few years ago without purchasing, but they have improved 10-fold in the last decade to the point where you’d be hard-pushed to pick the difference between a LiuGong and one of the major brands,” Steve said. “Their build quality and finish is now excellent, and you get a lot of value for money with those machines.”
Faultless
Another major factor influencing the decision to go with LiuGong was the immediate availability of the machines and the service and back-up guaranteed by the Perth McIntosh & Son team.
“We were keen to run with LiuGong and bring them up here, but we did want McIntosh (& Son) to fully back us should we have any warranty or maintenance issues, which they were happy to do,” Steve said.
“We were slightly concerned about possible breakages and downtime, but with the exception of a couple of minor teething problems initially with one of the rollers, which McIntosh (& Son) sorted out straight away, the machines have been faultless.’’
Everyone’s happy
The 30-tonne 930E excavator was immediately put to work 170km south-east of Karratha, working on the Rio Tinto Ti Tree Camp expansion project designed to support a workforce of more than 300.
Powered by a six-cylinder, 6.7-litre Cummins Stage III engine offering up to 227hp, the excavator has a bucket capacity of 1.6m3 and a useful digging reach of more than 10m.
“When we sent it out there over seven months ago, we said to the operator, ‘We want you to provide feedback on this bit of kit because it’s new to us and we’re testing it out to see if it’s going to work,’ Nothing but good comments have come back from them,” Steve said.
“It’s all rock out there and they have consistently worked it hard without any dramas or downtime. The operator reports it has plenty of breakout power, is very responsive and, importantly, when working through the hottest months of the year, cab comfort is first class, with outstanding air conditioning and excellent ergonomics.
“It compares really favourably with Caterpillar or Komatsu and, although I think given a choice the operator wouldn’t have initially chosen the LiuGong, he was genuinely surprised just how good it was once he started operating it.”
Reaction from KMH customers to the LiuGong rollers has been equally positive and Steve said both had performed well, with no issues.
The rollers, both powered by turbocharged Cummins Stage III engines, have been used on a variety of projects from civil construction on mine sites to road maintenance.
“As is the case with the excavator, the LiuGong rollers offer outstanding performance and value for money,” Steve said. “For example, the drum roller comes standard with the ability to dial-in specific compaction rates, which is a definite plus and something that is an additional cost with other brands.”
More LiuGong on the way
Having successfully ‘tested the water’ with LiuGong and now secure in the knowledge KMH can rely on McIntosh & Son’s excellent back-up and support, Steve is extremely confident the LiuGong brand has a bigger part to play as the hire fleet continues to expand.

Research and innovation
Blundstone believes that personal safety starts with the correct footwear.
safe on site. Since 1870, Blundstone has been developing new ways to provide unmatched comfort and protection from the elements. The market leaders in safety footwear invest heavily in research, development, and technological innovation to provide wearers with the best performing safety boots.
Blundstone is known for a history of never standing still — naturally, product research and innovation is no exception. Each safety style has been designed to provide levels of protection, fit for the work of the wearer. To understand this, Blundstone engages endusers, wearers, and business representatives for health and safety to develop an understanding and greater perspective on the fit, feel and style of a new product. This provides a more detailed understanding, beyond standards, into the environments and duty requirements of different professions and highlights the key features that wearers value most.
New products are trialled with wearers in real-life situations before being released for production. This testing ensures their safety boots are ‘fit-for-purpose’ and allows direct observation of their use. The challenge for safety footwear is to fulfill a range of roles and
functions simultaneously while ensuring they meet exacting standards. Accident prevention, occupational health issues, the advent of longer shifts, changing work practices and varied environments are all factors that are considered when designing safety footwear.
Safe Work Australia reported in their 2021 key findings that machinery operators and drivers accounted for the most worker fatalities by occupation in 2020. Additionally, the same category of machinery operators and drivers rated in the top three occupations for serious injury and disease claims, with 16,446 reports submitted. Across all work-related injuries reported, there is a median time of 6.8 weeks lost — highlighting the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety footwear.
Blundstone’s new range, RotoFlex®, is a key example of fit-for-purpose product innovation — the result of several years of consumer driven research. The research aimed to identify the true needs of safety footwear users, analysing what Australian workers expected from their footwear and the problems they were experiencing with their existing safety boots.
Key findings of the research indicated that the main concerns and priorities for wearers were:
• Safety and support — ankle roll/ musculoskeletal injuries/avoiding trips and falls;
Durability — quality of componentry and materials;
• Comfort — pain-free, all-day comfort with ankle flexibility and movement;
• Thermal regulation with ventilation to increase airflow — reduce sweaty feet; and
• Sole — ergonomics, longevity, stability, and traction.
The #8560 Unisex Safety Boot in Wheat is the hero of the RotoFlex range. This boot, along with the entire series, combines customerdriven research with biomechanical innovation to offer a world-leading design to wearers in a range of heavy industries.
The 6-inch height of the #8560 provides heightened protection and support around the ankle, optimal for jumping in and out of earthmoving machinery such as excavators and bulldozers.
Along with this, the GripTek® sole and AirCell footbed offers durable stability and comfort for those workers faced with uneven surfaces and graded ground — helping to avoid slips, trips and falls, and reducing time lost on the job.
RotoFlex is the next step in safety footwear — put our innovation to work. Available at participating retailers now.

Hydraulink Malaga: Best under pressure for industrial
Hydraulink Malaga, led by franchise operator Jignesh Patel in northern Perth, is centred on a major industrial area that serves industries including mining, earthmoving, construction, materials handling, manufacturing, waste management, plant hire, agriculture, road and rail, transport, and marine.
“This region in the City of Swan, designated a strategic industrial area for Western Australia, will be ideally served by a franchise operator with the local and international experience of Jignesh Patel,” Hydraulink National Franchise Manager Wayne Abbott said.
Patel is a heavy duty diesel mechanic with a diploma in mechanical engineering and more than 20 years’ experience in India, the Middle East, Africa and Perth, where he moved to in 2008 to work for a global leader in heavy machinery with operations throughout Australia.
“Jignesh’s experience in power plant and heavy machinery has been at the top world standards level of service, compliance and safety,” Abbott said.
“His extensive experience with a wide variety of machinery and sites will be invaluable to companies seeking cost-efficient and thorough service from a franchise already totally familiar with their diverse needs.”
Patel said an advantage of Hydraulink – which has 400 service points throughout Australia and New Zealand – is that the group offers not only offers hoses and fittings, but provides solutions based on the industry expertise most relevant to clients’ needs, saving downtime and maximising productivity.
“Local knowledge backed by national expertise is a big advantage to companies that wish to obtain uniformly high standards across multiple sites, for example,” Patel said.
“I was attracted to Hydraulink because of the
strong network, the quality of their products, as well as their support to franchises. Members of the Hydraulink family of franchises are typically long-term committed, with deep roots in the business communities where they operate and live.
“A franchise with this quality organisation also gives me the backing to expand my own future, while giving me flexibility to spend more time with family. I can grow my own business while achieving a home-work balance. Franchises such as this have back-up support, so you are not working along.”
The new Malaga facility is backed by the training, shared expertise and top service standards of the Hydraulink group, which trades under the market signature “Best Under Pressure.”
According to Abbott, family-operated businesses such as the new Malaga franchise are a major benefit to operators and clients, because franchise operators have the strongest personal stake in the business to ensure ongoing satisfaction and enduring partnerships.

Victorian shire uses iMC to boost efficiency by 40 per cent – and empower its local workforce
At the same time, it is also taking the opportunity to introduce new technology to its own workers and operators, giving them added skills and expertise they can use in their careers.
Working hard
In September 2019, the Shire of Corangamite, located west of Melbourne on the southern coast of Victoria, took delivery of a Komatsu D85EXi-18 dozer fitted with intelligent Machine Control (iMC) to work on its landfill operation at Naroghid, the Corangamite Regional Landfill.
The landfill operation is on a 39-hectare site, and handles around 32,000 tonnes of waste to landfill material a year, not only for Corangamite residents, but also for the adjacent shires of Warrnambool and Colac Otway and Southern Grampians.
During the drier summer months, the dozer is being used for construction of the waste cells and leachate ponds – which must be constructed to strict Victorian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) requirements.
In addition, year-round, it is used for pushing and spreading waste material, covering it each day with 300mm of daily cover material, then capping the waste with materials, including clay and topsoil, once each cell is filled.
According to Glenn Busuttil, Corangamite’s Team Leader Waste at the Corangamite Regional Landfill, the Komatsu iMC dozer has proved to be very successful in both applications.
“When we construct new cells, we work to strict design requirements for their shape –things like 3:1 batters, batter heights, and how high the rubbish can go.”
Working smart
Over the past eight years, Corangamite has brought in contractors and surveyors to carry out this cell construction work, but it’s now able
to do it by transferring the designs to the iMC dozer’s onboard system, with the dozer then working in with the scrapers and excavators that are also used for the cell construction.
The iMC dozer was also used to place a capping layer – consisting of 1.5m of clay, overlaid with around 800mm of soil and topsoil – to top off a filled waste cell.
“Doing these jobs this time, once we had the design, we had a surveyor working with us, helping to calibrate the machine and checking all the as-builts it was generating as we went,” said Glenn.
“It was a much faster job with this technology. What was previously a 10-week job on constructing the cell, we completed in around six weeks.” That’s a 40 percent productivity improvement.
The dozer’s iMC technology is also making the day-to-day landfill operations faster and more efficient.
“Each day, we spread out the waste we’ve received that day, then cover it with 300mm of soil. The technology’s able to help with that, making sure that’s all a bit more accurate,” he said.
“One issue with waste is that, due to its nature, you can’t put in pegs and stringlines, so typically we’ve had to put in a windrow of clay each day to give us a rough level to work off. Having the iMC machine do this makes it all much faster and more accurate.
“In addition, during this process, the dozer can also take the levels of waste that we’re putting down, using the RLs to give us the as-builts. Each month we give these to the surveyors, and because we know the volumes of waste we’re receiving, we can work out our compaction rates over the site, and how much waste we can get into a certain area.”
Glenn pointed out the iMC dozer also offers potential safety advantages. At present, EPA and auditing requirements mean a surveyor has
to walk over the waste and work around the machines doing cell construction.
Glenn said that while the primary goal has been to work more efficiently, save money and carry out this work faster, the council’s ambition has also been for its own operators and workers be able to do the job themselves, rather than have it contracted out.
“Now they are learning how to use GPS technology themselves,” he said. “All our operators are local people, and they’ve not had the opportunity to work with this technology before. We’ve never had it on our machines at the landfill previously.”
“This opportunity to train our own local people, our own council employees, is really exciting. And they absolutely love it; now they feel they can operate equipment on a range of sites and to a high level in the future” he said.
Right first time
Corangamite’s D85EXi-18 iMC dozer replaces another Komatsu D85 it had for 13 years, which had worked around 15,000 hours.
“We decided on another Komatsu because we’d always had good service and performance with the other one, plus we wanted the inbuilt GPS,” explained Glenn. “The technology is absolutely proving itself for this application. And once we bring in our own base station, which we’re planning to do, that will take us to a whole new level.”
“Applying this technology lets us deliver more efficient waste management for our ratepayers and adjacent councils, it is a better use of resources, and it’s saving money. We don’t want to have to do things twice because it wasn’t right the first time; that’s wasting money.
“Now our operators know how far to go with waste spreading and compaction, and with the earthworks design, because they can get it right the first time, every time. That’s a big saving for us,” he said.
A Victorian regional council is successfully using the latest positioning and machinecontrol technology to carry out landfill cell construction and waste management more efficiently and with lower costs for ratepayers.

All go for 2023 Diesel Dirt & Turf Golf Day
The National Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is where the earthmoving equipment industry gathers every year to exhibit the latest and greatest in machinery, technology and services.
Top golf venue
The 2023 Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo annual charity golf day is being held on Friday 3 March 2023 at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club, 2-8 Twin Creeks Drive, Luddenham. This popular event will kick off with a 6.30am breakfast, followed by a putting competition and then on to the main event.
The day features lots of big prizes on the course, however the most popular event is the Pickles auction of fantastic items donated by members of the industry, businesses, associates and others wishing to contribute to the needs of the community.
Expo Manager, Marti Zivkovich thanked the amazing organisations and individuals who donate auction and raffle prizes and sponsor holes.
“Our thanks particularly to our gold sponsor Komatsu, gold media sponsors Earthmovers & Excavators Magazine and TradeEarthmovers. com.au, major supporter Pickles and associate sponsors Norm Engineering, Pickles, XCMG, What-If and Record TIME and Earthmoving Equipment Magazine,” he said.
have demonstrated how much they enjoy the opportunity to network and build relationships through the National Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo. There are many stories around people and businesses that are always ready to lend a helping hand. The desire of the industry to make a contribution to the community is clearly shown at the annual Diesel Dirt & Turf golf day, where fundraising proceeds are raised for worthy community charities and organisations.
Back for 2023
The Diesel Dirt & Turf annual charity golf day is back. After the 2022 golf day was flooded out, the local organisation Mama Lana’s Community Foundation is again the Expo’s chosen charity in 2023.
Mama Lana’s is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping the often forgotten homeless and underprivileged community in the greater Penrith region, to advance their wellbeing and prospects for future independence.
Mama Lana’s Community Foundation offers hot meals six nights a week, supplies food and toiletry packs, as well as providing clothing, sleeping bags, swags and blankets to keep the homeless and underprivileged warm during cold Penrith nights. MLCF also work with and assist other local charities and support services and responds to crisis calls from people who need a hand up with food, clothing, furniture, and in some cases, financial issues. Find out more at www.mamalanas.org.au.
Mama Lana’s Founding Director Lana Borg said the foundation is thrilled to be chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s event.
“As a wholly not-for-profit charity, we receive no ongoing government funding and rely heavily on the support of private donors. To have this fundraising opportunity to enable our service to continue providing essential services to our local community is just amazing,” she said.
“We have seen an increase in the number of people needing assistance with food and basic necessities, so this fundraising will assist us greatly in continuing to support the homeless and disadvantaged in the Nepean area with meals, pantry items, toiletries and other basic needs.”
“The golf day is a great way to build networking with others in the industry while enjoying a great day out and raising money for a worthy community cause. Special thanks to our hole sponsors.”

Exhibit or visit: Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is a winner
The Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is returning in 2023 to showcase the latest in earthmoving equipment and services.
If you ask anyone why they attend expos and field days, there is a simple answer. People enjoy seeing what is new and the latest in earthmoving equipment and services.
Another important reason is the personal interaction with the technical professionals who supply and support the equipment.
Evaluating new equipment online is fine when you have a good idea of what you need, however there is no substitute for face to face inspection and for getting the answers you need to make a well informed purchase decision.
Expos are also an excellent place to meet industry colleagues who are happy to share their experiences that may help you determine what tools and options may be best for your business.
A prime opportunity
The National Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is Australia’s prime opportunity for anyone who works in the earthmoving, construction,
public space management, earthworks and associated services industries to find out what is happening in the industry.
The Expo is where you can see the latest releases, technologies, tools, attachments and productivity enhancements in the one place.
Major brands see value
Chris Moroz, the Komatsu Sales Manager for New South Wales, sums up their experience.
“The Expo is the launch platform for the latest in smart construction technology for our range of bulldozers and excavators. The benefit for operators is high efficiency and the ability to work exactly to the project construction design,”Moroz said.
According to Greg Page from Tough Dog, which does suspension upgrades for fourwheel-drive vehicles, their market is typically people who would attend the Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo.
“Many people in the construction industry drive off-road vehicles, both for work and play, so it
makes good sense for us to be here,” he said.
Roy Rossini, Director and General Manager for associate sponsor XCMG Mining Equipment Australia said, “The Expo gives us the right platform because it caters to our customer base.“
Grab a great auction deal
Hugh Rainger from Pickles Auctions said that the Diesel Dirt & Turf Expo is one of their highlight events of the year.
“We have exhibited at Diesel Dirt & Turf from the first year and we have created a great following through the event,” he said.
Expo Manager Marti Zivkovich said that there are many reasons why exhibitors return year after year to participate in Diesel Dirt & Turf.
“We are particularly thankful for Komatsu to once again taking on gold sponsorship of this leading industry event. Again, we welcome the gold media sponsorship by Earthmovers & Excavators and Trade Earthmovers magazine,” she said.
“Associate sponsorships are a great way to increase your visibility, so if you would like to join our associate sponsors Norm Engineering, Pickles, Earthmoving Equipment Magazine, XCMG, What-If and Record TIME, contact us now.”

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 set for biggest show yet
CONEXPO-CON/AGG, already recognised as the largest trade show in North America, has officially sold all available exhibit space, guaranteeing the 2023 edition of the show will be the biggest in history.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG, now nearly 5 per cent bigger than the record set in 2020, will feature 1,800 exhibitors and 150 education sessions during its run from 14-18 March 2023.
“The addition of the new West Hall and Diamond Lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center gave us, and our exhibitors, a number of new opportunities to show how we are taking the construction industry to the next level,”
CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Director Dana Wuesthoff said.
“Now at 2.8 million square feet of exhibits,
there’s more for construction pros to see than ever before.”
Despite being the largest CONEXPO-CON/ AGG ever, recent additions to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) will make it the easiest to get around as well. Beneath the entire LVCC campus runs the Convention Center Loop, an underground transportation system designed by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company that transports convention attendees throughout the campus in under two minutes in Tesla vehicles, free of charge.
“We are excited to welcome CONEXPOCON/AGG back to Las Vegas for another record-setting event,” Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (which owns and operates the LVCC) Chief Operating Officer Brian Yost said.
“The addition of the West Hall and the Convention Center Loop will only further enhance the ‘Only Vegas’ experience for attendees and exhibitors.”
Construction pros are ready for the show to return as well. The current pace of attendee registration is nearly double what it was at this time for the 2020 show.
“This is the event that construction professionals, especially those making company-level decisions, and those needing professional development hours, can’t miss,” CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Chair and Caterpillar Senior Vice President Phil Kelliher said.
“Seeing the new equipment and techniques on a screen doesn’t compare to seeing it all in person. At the show, you can see the equipment, ask questions of the manufacturers themselves, and really understand what the equipment and education can do for your career and business.”
Registration for CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE is currently 30 per cent off with the code MEDIA30. Construction and fluid power pros should get their badges before 6 January 2023 to get that discount and have a better pick of hotel accommodations.
TAKING CONSTRUCTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
No matter what sector of construction you’re in, you’ll leave CONEXPO-CON/AGG with new ideas, new relationships, and new opportunities to grow your business, and your place within the industry. This isn’t just North America’s largest construction trade show, it’s taking construction to the next level.
What lies ahead for Queensland’s civil construction industry this new year?
Is Collaborative Contracting the Key?
Happy New Year.
My hope is that there is a return of some normality to life and business conditions. I am hoping that normality includes the stabilisation of supply prices, improvement in lead times and availability of the supply chain, improvement in the availability of labour, interest rate increases stalling and a drier year - all resulting in a return to sustainable margins.
The Bureau of Meteorology modelling is suggesting a breakdown of the La Nina event and a possible return to El Nino conditions throughout the year. While the probability of high rainfall decreases under these scenarios, there is still some uncertainty. We need a break, so fingers crossed that the numbers fall our way.
Unfortunately, the headwinds will continue into this year but will hopefully be more manageable.
Inflationary pressures have put a strain on infrastructure programs. The dilemma for the owners of these programs is how to manage their budgets in the light of an increasing need for more infrastructure to be delivered. An easy solution would be to deliver less projects. In Queensland, the demand for infrastructure development is outstripping delivery. This is due to the current and projected growth of the population and a slowing of new projects. Considering our aging population is signalling a further increase in international migration it would seem the demand for infrastructure is only going to increase.
Added is a layer of infrastructure required for the Olympic Games and the renewable energy infrastructure to be delivered by 2030 to 2035.
The release of the last November’s report from the Clean Energy Council paints a depressing scenario regarding our current pace of delivery of renewables to meet 2030 targets. The rate of renewable energy infrastructure has dropped below the required rate to meet these targets. An acceleration of projects will be required.
Chris Bowen, the Federal Climate Change and Energy Minister, has estimated that Australia
will need to install 22,000, 500-watt solar panels every day for eight years in addition to 40, 7-megawatt wind turbines every month. An additional 10,000km of transmission lines need to be installed to meet the federal government targets.
It was reported in the Australian Financial Review by Dylan McConnell, a renewable energy and energy system analyst at UNSW, that to meet Federal Government’s 82 per cent renewables target by 2030 the rate of development needs to double and almost quadruple for the market operator’s hydrogen superpower scenario.
Queensland has committed to being a hydrogen producer. In addition, The Queensland Government has committed to building pump hydro storage facilities.
There seems to be growing resistance on environmental and ecological grounds to deliver some of this infrastructure, as exampled by Chalumbun Wind farm cutting half the proposed turbines, Mackay’s pump hydro flooding a town and a general resistance to increased overhead transmission lines. These delays are adding to the urgency to accelerate renewable energy projects. This acceleration and volume of renewable projects coupled with the demand for transport and other civil infrastructure will not help the inflationary, supply and labour pressures we have been experiencing. There is no doubt that the problems China is facing with COVID will add to the supply and cost issues.
So how do we tackle this dilemma?
There is no doubt that governments will need to increase their budgets for infrastructure but considering the debt they are carrying, there is little room for large increases. The private industry will need to play a larger part in financing and delivering infrastructure in this state and Australia going forward.
The industry will need to deliver more for less. This is possible but reform of the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of infrastructure projects needs to be implemented immediately. These reforms should be supported from other productivity enhancing policy such as industrial relations.
Planning needs to be streamlined to reduce barriers and speed up the process. Designers need to be incentivised through better renumeration and liability sharing, to explore and embrace innovation in their designs. While designs are procured at lowest cost and the designer wears all liability for their designs, the boundaries of true innovation will not be challenged. This is needed to provide cheaper and better performing infrastructure. Standard specifications, which are prescriptive, need to be performance based. Where prescriptive specifications are required, standardisation across jurisdictions should be forced wherever possible. The procurement process needs to be quick, tenders easy to price and risk adequately shared. Collaborative contracting is the tool to link all this together.
by Damian Long, CCF QLD CEOThe light at the end of the tunnel is there will be sustained high level of opportunities for the foreseeable future. Interest rate increases will abate. Fuel prices will be stable. China’s COVID wave will subside. Collaborative contracting will continue to evolve providing a path for a better way of doing business and the year should be drier. Unfortunately, the demand on materials, plant and labour will continue to make delivering projects difficult.
Are your workers trained to the highest standard?
CCF Victoria is working to keep all traffic management workers and the community safe.
Traffic workers engage in a wide range of works from the use of Truck Mounted Attenuators, to deploying portable traffic lights, to setting up variable message signs – all of which require a minimum level of knowledge and skills to be completed safely.
Traffic controllers are a vital component of the construction process from the initial planning of works to the completion of works, and help to ensure that workers, the public and assets are kept safe, while projects and the community continue moving forward.
With the sheer volume of major projects and construction works being completed now across the state, it has become even more critical for traffic industry workers to be given the opportunity to complete training and build on their skills. In addition, it has become equally important for employers to provide more opportunity to new employees and entrants to the industry, helping them attain their full potential within the traffic management industry.
For a long time, traffic control was considered one of those jobs done by people who had limited options for employment. A way of working that did not require a minimum education level or specific skills, but rather someone that can place cones or bollards at the right distance and signs in the right position.
The construction industry has evolved since these times and now has a strong focus on safety, and understands the importance of training to build capabilities and skills.
A Traffic Controller with the correct training and encouragement can attain highly skilled positions within an organisation, leading to various career opportunities down the track.
The introduction of the Traffic Management Reform proposes harmonising the industry and setting continuity through training and development of future traffic workers.
and through our training we focus on ensuring students have a strong understanding of the safety aspects of the job, as well as ensure they, themselves, their co-workers and the public are also safe. Traffic management workers have the opportunity to pursue further support to build their skills and remain current with the industry themselves. However, with these reforms it would be good to see an onus on the employers and the Department of Transport to ensure they provide continuous professional development and currency for the traffic workers.
The Civil Contractors Federation has always prided itself as being an industry leader in training ensuring that we meet the highest standards. Training with CCF Victoria means that when students leave, they are job ready for this industry that employs thousands of people from a diverse range of backgrounds and industry sectors.
Allied Earthmovers Association
Words: Ann CallaghanHow many emails were waiting in your inbox when you returned to work after the Christmas holidays this year? And how many did you really need to read?
If you were like us here in the Allied Earthmovers Association office, you would have had A LOT.
The issue of email overload is one that frustrates me every single day and it is an issue I have ranted about in the past. But nothing has changed and it seems to be getting worse every year. The trouble is, with a new generation joining the workforce, email overload has become the norm.
There are a few rules for sending an email. Follow these, and life will become a little more streamlined:
• Don’t overcommunicate by email. If you need to have a conversation, then phone, send a text or use messenger. Only use an email to send documents or to ensure an issue is confirmed in writing;
• Check emails once or twice a day. Not every five minutes. Deal with them, then file them on your computer in the appropriate file/ folder. Your inbox is not a filing system. You don’t keep letters in your letterbox on the street, so don’t keep emails in your inbox.
If you’re running your own small business, it’s a good idea to have a separate email address for personal emails. It helps prevent important emails getting buried;
• Keep emails clear and brief. An email should contain only one subject matter. It costs
running a small business.
nothing to send an email, so if you have a second subject to discuss, then send a second email. This will save confusion and avoid information getting missed; Be polite in your emails. Remember, it’s in writing forever;
• Check your tone. Your tone can be misunderstood if you choose the wrong word. And avoid using capitals, unless YOU REALLY WANT TO SHOUT AT SOMEONE;
• Proofread, proofread, proofread. The art of letter writing may have been lost since emails took over, however, there is no excuse for typos or misspellings with a computer; and Unsubscribe to any junk email you don’t want to read. It only takes a few seconds and will help keep your mail to a minimum. These days, owner operators are running their earthmoving businesses from the work site, so it makes sense to keep systems as simple as possible. Communication is of paramount importance, but only if it’s relevant to your business. Keep the clutter to a minimum, allocate specific times to check your business emails, and get rid of the junk mail.
Last meeting
Our last meeting was a trade night hosted by Mark, Rocco and the team at STM Trucks and Machinery at Smeaton Grange. They very generously provided a feast of burgers while members were able to inspect closely the machines on display. Mark spoke about STM’s latest product, the D’Avino dump trucks. Members also took home a bag full of goodies.
If you are an owner operator of earthmoving equipment and feel you still have something to learn about running a small business, come along to an Allied Earthmovers Association meeting and see how others do it. They’re a relaxed bunch of guys all trying to achieve the same thing. Come and see how they do it!
