Case IH dealer TTMI, which operates five dealerships in Victoria’s Gippsland area and Tasmania, has it has taken over from Agrimac as the Case IH dealer in Warrnambool and will also open a branch in Colac early next year.

From its beginnings in 1972 as a Case and David Brown dealer in Trafalgar, the business has been constantly evolving. In 2003 the name was changed to Traf Tractors and Machinery, and there was further expansion into Maffra and Leongatha in Gippsland, and then further growth into Tasmania with its Longford and Latrobe branches in 2018. The name was changed to TTMI in the same year.

Dealer principal Jason Henry, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the agricultural industry, and group sales manager/director Andrew Snape, who began his career in the industry as an apprentice diesel mechanic almost 30 years ago, both grew up on dairy farms in the Gippsland region and are proud to be offering services back into these regions.

Henry and Snape bought into TTMI in 2015 and 2018 respectively, and are both ‘hands on’ directors in the day-to-day operation of TTMI.

“This latest expansion comes at a great time and the move into Warrnambool extends our reach in Victoria,” Henry says.

“Together with the opening of a branch in Colac in 2023, this will further reinforce the strength of the TTMI network. It’s an area we already know so well so have the knowledge and experience to deliver the support and service our clients expect.”

Pete McCann, general manager of Case IH Australia/ New Zealand, says TTMI’s expansion into Warrnambool, and eventually Colac, was good news for customers, who can look forward to enhanced levels of engagement and support.

“Jason and his team are focused on delivering the highest levels of service to their customers, backed by considerable knowledge of the farming areas in which TTMI operates and an understanding of the unique needs of the farming businesses across these regions,” says McCann.

Henry says it is an exciting time for the TTMI team as they prepare for the next chapter in the business’ growth, with each expansion presenting fresh opportunities and new challenges.

Stag Machinery Group has acquired SEQ Ag and Construction in Toowoomba and is expanding its machinery offering for customers

Queensland Case IH dealer Stag Machinery Group was formed in 2020 through a partnership between Craig Brimblecombe of St George Machinery Centre, and Noel Baines, owner of Ag Requirements in Gatton, to run the former Wideland Ag Case IH dealerships in Toowoomba and Dalby.

Now, less than two years later, Stag has acquired Toowoomba-based SEQ Ag and Construction, dealers of New Holland Agriculture and New Holland Construction equipment. Ag Requirements in Gatton will now assume responsibility for the Lockyer Valley part of the business while Stag, from its new Toowoomba location, will focus on customers in that immediate area.

Under this latest expansion, Stag will retain the New Holland brands, selling them alongside its existing Case IH range. Noel Baines says this is a win for both farming and construction customers across the region.

“For customers, they will have access to a wider range of machinery, recognising the agricultural diversity of this area, and in a first for Stag and Ag Requirements, we will be offering construction equipment, which opens us up to a whole new market,” he says.

“It really is an exciting development that creates new opportunities for us, and for our customers, who stand to benefit from increased options for their businesses.

“We appreciate CNH Industrial giving us this opportunity and in seeing the value to this region of bringing two brands under the one business.”

A number of staff from the former SEQ Ag and Construction will continue with Stag Machinery Group and Ag Requirements.

The Case IH Trident 5550 applicator with Raven Autonomy combines proven driverless technology with an agronomically designed spreading platform for a flexible autonomous solution. The technology stack is powered by guidance and steering, propulsion control, perception and path planning software developed by Raven.

From a mobile device, operators can plan and complete an entire field operation based on mapped field boundaries. The Raven Autonomy perception system, through a series of advanced cameras and a radar system, is constantly sensing a 360-degree environment around the machine for obstacles and motion initiation while operating. With

artificial intelligence, Raven’s perception controller processes a continuous stream of images, which interprets and detects obstacles. The remote operator can view the cameras through the mobile device at any time.

If an obstacle is detected, the machine will safely come to a stop and an alert will pop up on the mobile device. From there, the operator can evaluate the situation and determine the next course of action. A variety of machine tasks and functions can be viewed remotely through the mobile device, including fuel level, diesel exhaust fluid level, speed, revolutions per minute, bin-level status, Universal Terminal information and diagnostic trouble codes.

“The Raven Autonomy perception system provides an advanced, reliable solution for autonomous operation and is tailored specifically for the spreading application with a self-propelled machine,” Raven general manager Eric Shuman says.

John Deere releases Operations Center software update

Ever wanted to watch your on-farm tasks being completed in real time from the palm of your hand?

Well now you can, thanks to John Deere Operations Center software update.

The update has added a rideshare-like systems update to give a user up-to-date tracking of what their machines are doing and providing an ETA for completion.

John Deere Australia and New Zealand precision agriculture manager Benji Blevin says the update improves overall efficiency.

“Estimated time remaining applies data science to current and historical productivity to provide an accurate calculation of how long it will take a single machine or multiple machines to complete field work,” he says.

“The calculation, which updates every five minutes, is based on a number of factors, such as turn times and machine configuration.

“Now farmers will know, to the minute, how long it will take to complete the work in the field before the rain sets in or the exact time a tender truck needs to meet the sprayer.”

But the update doesn’t just cover machinery on the go –the Operations Center also tracks the amount of time they remain stationary.

“A timer begins when any equipment begins idling and continues counting up until the machine is back in action again,” Blevin says.

“All these machine monitoring features alert famers on potential inefficiencies in their operations and provide invaluable insights for the better management of labour and flow of operational activity.”

Silvan debuts new sprayer range

A new 40-litre spot sprayer and two portable hand sprayers have been launched for Spring as part of Silvan’s Essentials range, which is available now.

Silvan says the range, which also includes rechargeable 12L and 15L backpack sprayers, has been specifically designed for general weed management, insect and pest control anywhere from a garden to a small property.

The compact 40L spot sprayer has been designed for applying pesticides, agricultural and horticultural herbicides to weeds and insecticides to plants.

Also included is a chemical resistant diaphragm pump that produces an open flow of 2.6L a minute, with a maximum pressure of 50psi.

Other features include 3m of wiring loom with alligator clips, inline on/off switch and fuse.

The sprayer consists of a translucent poly tank for viewing the content level and comes with a trigger jet spray with 450mm lance and adjustable spray nozzle, which delivers a coarse pencil straight stream through to a fine mist.

Attached to the nozzle is a 6m x 8mm long agricultural hose.

The portable 8L hand sprayer has a maximum operating pressure of 3 Bar/45psi and comes with a translucent poly tank for viewing the content level.

Other features include a piston type pump for smooth and easy pressurising through the hand lever and a 1,100mm delivery hose.

The 1.5L pressure sprayer also has a translucent tank and poly piston type pump, with a weighted flexible dip tube and suction filter, as well as a pressure relief vale to depressurise the sprayer before refilling.

The 40L unit has a recommended retail price of $199, the 8L unit $45 and the 1.5L unit $18, all with GST included.

A new and improved map page simplifies farmers’ experience of monitoring fieldwork and equipment from the office. The update also allows farmers to select multiple partner organisations to view equipment information, as well as visualise complete location history including direction of travel and a time filter.

The Q Series sits between Valtra’s fifth generation tractors, the T and S Series, but adds new flavour with its versatility and efficiency, Valtra says.

The latest Finnish-designed, developed and manufactured tractor has been built for optimal fuel efficiency, sporting a 7.4L Agco Power engine and Agco CVT transmission with between 1,000 to 1,500rpm in max torque and low engine speeds of

1,850rpm. This engine means the Q can run at max power even at very low speeds.

Valtra’s unique long stroke feature in the engine allows for constant high power and lengthens its lifespan.

The Q can also be outfitted with the Valtra Unlimited auto central lubricating system, removing the need for manual lubrication.

At just 9.2 tonnes, the Q is just big enough to house the power of a large tractor, but also small enough to minimise soil compaction.

Valtra’s EcoPower system decreases fuel consumption by a 10 per cent, and the tractor has a host of other technological advancements.

Valtra Connect allows the tractor to use advanced telemetry, a fleet management information system and Agrirouter integration – vastly improving task management, says Valtra.

With the SmartTouch interface, the user can store and swipe through tasks with a simple interface to keep on top of jobs.

Valtra’s new SmartTurn feature automatically turns the tractor in the headland.

“The Q Series is a high-quality tractor with a capital Q and customers deserve an equally high-quality service,” Valtra sales director Matti Tiitinen says.

“To ensure the best tractor experience, we have introduced a certification program for Q Series dealers.”

Production of the Q Series is just starting now in Finland, with no news yet as to when the Q Series will be released in Australia.

Claas releases supersized flexible draper front and optimisation system

Claas has a released a new 50-foot (15.3m) variation of its popular Convio Flex draper front, named the 1530.

Now available in working widths of 15.3, 13.8, 12.3 and 10.8 metres, Convio models incorporate flexible knife bars, tables and side belts that enable them to flex up to 90mm upwards and 135mm downwards.

They are ideal for harvesting crops that are close to the ground, such as pulses or lodged crops.

Claas Harvest Centre product manager – Claas Lexion Steve Reeves says all Convio models are equipped with a large number of practical automatic functions that optimise performance and reduce operator stress.

“Belt speed, reel traction and height are all automatically controlled for optimum crop flow and minimal grain loss in all crops and harvesting conditions,” he says.

“In grain mode, the cutterbar is set rigid and the cutting height is controlled using the sensing bands underneath the unit.

“For lodged grain, the driver can switch the cutter bar to flexible mode at the push of a button and adjust the ground pressure while driving.

“In Flex mode, the cutterbar follows the ground contours on skids with contact pressure controlled via the Active Float function.

“Finally, the Auto Flex mode is recommended when harvesting crops close to the ground on uneven surfaces.

“In this mode, the cutterbar continuously uses sensor data to continuously determine the best position for optimum crop flow and ground tracking, as well as the lowest cutting height.”

Hydro-pneumatically suspended stabilisation wheels prevents the cutterbar from rocking on uneven ground or when being operated at high speeds.

Claas has also introduced a new machine optimisation system that automatically adjusts the table length and reel position of its Vario variable cutterbars when used in combination with Claas Lexion combine harvesters.

Reeves says the new system uses sensors in the feed channel and on the cabin roof to measure the position of the table length and the vertical and horizontal position of the reel.

The Cemos function then automatically adjusts the settings for optimal performance.

“Previously, the operator inside the cabin could adjust the vertical and horizontal reel position and the knife position by up to 60cm on a Vario,” he says.

“These positions could be stored to the cutting height controls system on the Lexion’s operating system, giving the operator semi-automatic control.

“By comparison, this new system is fully automatic, which reduces the operator’s workload and optimises crop flow into the threshing system, regardless of the operating conditions.”

With the launch of the seventh generation of the Fendt 700 Vario, Fendt has expanded its power spectrum to up to 300 horsepower (373kW).

The new engine, the optional 60-inch (152cm) track width, FendtOne onboard and offboard and a new generation of the Fendt Cargo front loader distinguish the series as an all-rounder in the world market, says Fendt.

For the first time, the 700 Vario is available with speed up to 60km/h and technical innovations from Fendt’s larger tractors, such as VarioDrive, have been introduced.

The new range has five models (Fendt 720 Vario, 722 Vario, 724 Vario, 726 Vario and Fendt 728 Vario) occupying the power range from 203 to 283hp (147–206kW) (ECE R120).

The Fendt DynamicPerformance (DP) extra power concept releases up to 20hp (15kW) of extra power in the Fendt 728 Vario DP via a demand-dependent control system, which means it achieves a maximum performance of up to 303hp. The extra power concept is not tied to driving speed or special application pick-ups and functions purely dynamically, even when power take-off work is carried out at a standstill.

The Fendt 700 Vario has been developed with a low power-to-weight ratio. The six-cylinder Agco Power engine with 7.5 litre capacity has been completely redesigned. Exhaust gas aftertreatment takes place via a diesel oxidation catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter and with selective catalytic reduction without exhaust gas recirculation.

Fendt’s 700 Series new generation of models comes in five variants in the 203 to 283hp range

Intelligently controlled all-wheel drive management is one of the advantages of Fendt VarioDrive, says Fendt. The drive train eliminates the need for manual switching when changing between field and road operations. It drives the front and rear axles as needed and distributes the power dynamically. In the field, the full tractive force is available and stresses are avoided when driving on roads or curves. The so-called pull-in-turn effect pulls the machine into the curve during turns, to achieve a small turning circle with full tractive power and less soil compaction.

The Fendt VarioGrip tyre pressure control system increases the contact area with the ground and boosts tractive power by up to eight per cent. When driving on the road, the air pressure is raised and thus the rolling resistance is reduced.

For the first time, the Fendt 700 Vario is available as a 60-inch (row-crop) version for all models in the series.

Ausmix has hit an all-time high in setting the standard for feed mixing capacity in Australia with its latest system.

The Wodonga-based manufacturer has unveiled its latest triple screw mixer, which boasts 45 cubic metres of total capacity.

The mixer was presented at Henty Field Days in September, with plenty of attention drawn to its capacity and all-Australian make.

“This thing is a beast!” Ausmix marketing manager Zealand Hatch says.

“We call it the XL45 because it has a massive 45 cubic metre capacity.

“There are already three of these behemoths in our workflow, all three going to big feedlotters in New South Wales and Queensland.”

Designed and built in Australia, the XL45 is the ultimate time and resource saver with its ability to churn through feed quickly and efficiently.

Having already established a name for itself as the go-to local feed machine developer, Hatch says Ausmix’s latest model is naturally turning heads.

“This is big news for big operators and for the Australian agricultural equipment industry,” he says.

“It validates our manufacturing skills and significantly bolsters our regional and national economies.”

One AusMix customer says the manufacturer’s ability to fix problems locally, particularly when time is a factor, is a major selling point.

This has been a significant advantage over the

past two years, with COVID-19 restrictions causing repeated delays in shipping overseas components to Australia.

“With a feedlot, you can’t have a breakdown you can’t fix within 24 hours,” the AusMix customer says.

“That [mixer] is the most important thing you’ve got, if you can’t deliver feed, you’re in trouble and I need support quickly and I can get a part or component within 12 or 24 hours without ‘oh we’ve got to wait on a boat from overseas’.

“The idea of local serviceability is very good.”

A two-speed gearbox ensures proper processing and cleanout of the tub and the mixer is built to last, sporting a 20mm auger and floor plating with 10mm walls while the screws are fitted with three types of heat-tested tungsten carbide knives.

Living amongst the amazing surroundings of Epping Forest provides Scott Hampson and his family with much joy, but also a couple of challenges.

Hampson runs Epping Forest Pastoral Company – a family business that’s been operating in the region for 120 years, and five generations, in northern Queensland.

For many years, the beef grazing operation has relied on local suppliers for its vehicles and machinery. However, as it’s grown, the demand for quality and reliability has become paramount for Hampson.

He found himself in need of two Cat D9T bulldozers fitted out with 30-foot stick rakes, scrub canopies and drawbars for his earthmoving exploits.

“When we were looking to upgrade this time

around, these machines weren’t available locally,” Hampson says.

“I was looking for someone I could trust who could provide the machinery we needed.”

His plight led him to Tom McDonald, company manager at Dixie Holdings, where he was able to secure his two rebuilt D9Ts in near-new condition.

Just like that, the earthmoving equipment specialist had a dozer at Hampson’s plot before he knew it.

Operating out of Woongoolba, south of Brisbane, Dixie Holdings is a family-owned business that provides high quality new and used machinery and attachments, covering everything from scrapers, dozers, graders, wheel loaders and dump trucks to stick rakes, cutter bars, dozer protection and draw bars.

“It was all able to be done in one package, and there wasn’t too much dealing with more than three people; I was mostly talking to Tom all along,” Hampson says.

“What I’ve found with Tom and the Dixie group is they’re all about what the customer wants. Nothing was too much trouble. If I wanted to change something with the attachments or anything he was more than happy to listen to what I had to say.”

Building trust is important for Hampson, so when his first dozer was delivered and performed flawlessly, he was more than elated.

“We’ve had one for over 12 months now and we’ve had no issues,” he says.

“It’s important because weather dictates how we operate and when we operate in this industry. When the window is there for us to get work done,

we need to know the machine’s going to run and do the job for us.”

Twelve months later, Hampson’s second D9T arrived on his doorstep, attachments and all.

He says having Dixie handle the haulage of his new machinery and attachments was vastly helpful, given all the other day-to-day tasks he needed to tend to.

“The trucks came around the corner in a cloud of dust, with all this nice shiny machinery and the attachments on the trucks,” he says.

“The kids were very excited of course. We followed them down the driveway and hopped out to have a yarn.”

Flexible and regular chats with McDonald meant Hampson was able to make the changes he needed before delivery.

“It’s not all that common to be able to do that, especially when it comes to earthmoving gear,” he says.

“He started his business in 2011 and has been a Case IH customer since then,” Arthur says.

“He loves his machinery and knew he wanted this rare black tractor as soon as he saw it.

“With his order for the tractor coinciding with COVID-19 restrictions, it’s taken longer for it to get here, but he was happy when he finally saw it, so I think it’s been worth the wait.”

Joining a fleet of Case IH Pumas, the black Optum stands out as the marquee piece of the collection.

It boasts unmatched technology usually reserved for larger Case IH models as well as a revamped interior.

Only a few of these rare black Optums are roaming around the world and Arthur says he was beyond thrilled to be part of a transaction involving one.

“Selling a black Case IH is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so it’s been an exciting time for us and I know the customer is going to enjoy having it as part of his operating fleet,” he says.

“It’s certainly going to get some attention when it’s working around the district.”

The all-black mammoth that is the Case IH AFS Connect Optum is as rare as they come, but a Nowra dealer managed to be part of bringing one to regional NSW.

In a huge debut for the Australian farming industry, Massey Ferguson has announced the release of both its 5S and 6S Series tractors.

The MF 5S Series consists of five new models ranging from 105 horsepower (78kW) to 145hp (108kW), while the 6S Series covers models ranging from 135–180hp (101–134kW). The 6S models also have engine power management, providing an extra 15–20hp (11–15kW) when needed.

Both the 5S and 6S Series are available in two specifications, Efficient and Essential, with a range of optional extras available, such as smart farming technology.

In the 5S Series, rear linkage lift capacity has been increased to 5,700kg across the range, and up to 6,000kg in some specific circumstances, while the new, stronger front linkage capacity is increased from 2,500kg to 3,000kg. The 6S Series has up to 9,600kg rear linkage capacity and up to 3,200kg front lifting capacity.

Massey Ferguson says that the 6S has the tightest turning circle of any 200hp tractor at 4.75m, while the 5S has a 4m turning radius.

Transmission

All MF 5S Series tractors are available with a choice of Massey Ferguson’s 16x16 speed, Dyna-4 or 24x24 Dyna-6 semi-powershift transmissions.

On Efficient models the transmissions come with AutoDrive as standard and are controlled via the Multipad joystick. AutoDrive provides automatic changing of the four or six steps in fieldwork, as well as the ranges when in transport.

Essential versions with Dyna-4 have T-Lever transmission control with Speedmatching, which automatically selects the most appropriate powershift ratio for the speed when gears are changed. Dyna-6 models come with AutoDrive.

Creeper gears are an option on all models, offering speeds down to 70m/h with 34-inch tyres or 80m/h on 38-inch tyres.

The 6S Series comes with the choice of either the Dyna-6 Super Eco transmission with new automatic mode or 24 x 24 Dyna-6 Super-Eco semi-powershift.

Both transmissions come with the unique MF Power Control lever on the left-hand side of the steering column, which provides clutchless shuttling, with an adjustable response. It also shifts speeds up or down and selects neutral.

The Dyna-VT transmission is now equipped with a new automatic mode, which allows the operator to adjust forward speed with the Multipad lever or the foot pedal, while the engine speed is

automatically regulated according to the load and speed. The hand throttle now also sets a lower engine speed limit – with rpm never dropping below this limit.

The new Super Eco version of the Dyna-VT reduces fuel consumption by achieving 40km/h at just 1,450rpm, while the Dyna-6 Super Eco achieves a top speed of 40km/h at 1,500rpm. AutoDrive, standard on all models, automatically shifts speeds relative to the engine load and speed. Operators can also manually set the engine rpm at which changes are made.

Those working in specialist crops will welcome the Super Creeper option, which provides precise control with speeds down to 70m/h at 1,400m/s.

All MF 6S tractors also provide the useful brake-toneutral function, which disengages drive when the brakes are applied.

Inside the cab

New air conditioning keeps the cab cooler, while other changes now make it quieter.

Operators benefit from a new, more comfortable, standard air-suspended seat. A heated seat option, with real leather trim and improved ventilation, is equipped with a Dynamic Damping System with lateral stability suspension that responds automatically to the severity of bumps.

Further improving comfort is the optional mechanical or active mechanical cab suspension, as well as the suspended front axle option. There are also different roof options available for improved visibility or increased ventilation.

All main tractor functions are run from a single new Multipad ISOBUS-compatible controller on the 6S Series and 5S Efficient models. On the 5S Essential model the transmission is operated by a small T-lever to the side and separate levers for the spool valves. On loader tractors the joystick is mounted at the front of the armrest.

Significant changes to the Datatronic 5 nine-inch (23cm) touchscreen terminal increase functionality and make it easier to use.

On the 6S Series models there is also a new MF E-Loader option that helps to increase loading accuracy, productivity and safety and provides control and setting of the new bucket shake facility.

For further operating flexibility there is also the updated Fieldstar 5 terminal option on both the 5S and 6S Series, which enables operators to run all the smart farming operations on a separate screen.

Strong start

Tractor sales continued their incredible upswing in August, according to data from the Tractor & Machinery Association

The 100 to 200hp (75–150kW) category was seven per cent ahead in August

Sales of agricultural tractors in August were again strong, up by 22 per cent on the same month last year, and are now 2.5 per cent up on the 2022 year to date (YTD). This is a particularly strong result given the rush of buyers that occurred in June, keen to maximise use of the federal government’s Temporary Full Expensing Program.

As we have been reporting for some months now, the industry’s ability to deliver tractors in such large quantities is due to the regular forward ordering that has been occurring for two years now in anticipation of supply challenges.

The fact remains that if a farmer wants a specific “bespoke” tractor ordered from the factory then delivery will be at least 12 months.

Indeed, most dealers now are resisting taking forward orders because of the uncertainty surrounding supply combined with the price movements that are beginning to occur.

The big question being asked at present is when this incredible upswing will come to an end. With tractor sales running at around 50 per cent ahead of what has traditionally been seen as a great year, there is no doubt that this can’t continue.

Delays in supply have served to smooth out the peaks in the market but we are beginning to see signs of when the current boom might end. Ownership costs are increasing with both purchase prices and financing costs rising steadily and the current tax incentives are in their final year.

The challenge for dealers will be to get the timing right regarding inventory given the prospect of machines ordered 12–18 months earlier arriving at a period of weakened demand.

Looking at sales across the nation, results were strong across the board with NSW sales up eight per cent to be now one per cent behind last year. Queensland was up 46 per cent to be now 13 per cent ahead year to date and Victoria was 24 per cent up on last August, due mainly to supply of small horsepower units, and is now up three per cent on last year.

Sales in WA recorded another huge lift with the further arrival of large horsepower machines, up 30 per cent for the month and now ahead two per cent YTD, South Australia was up 13 per cent for the month. Tasmania was down by 23 per cent, whilst sales into the Northern Territory were up 89 per cent.

Looking at the performance reporting categories, the small under-40hp (30kW) category was strongly up 25 per cent to be 10 per cent ahead YTD. The 40 to 100hp (30–75kW) range was up 21 per cent in the month to remain four per cent ahead YTD and the 100 to 200hp (75–150kW) category was up again –seven per cent ahead in August to be four per cent behind YTD. The large 200hp (150kW) plus range was the standout again – 55 per cent ahead of the same month last year but still one per cent off YTD.

Combine harvester sales are ramping up in preparation for this year’s harvest and are now 19 per cent ahead of the same time last year. There is every expectation of another 1,000+ year for this product as the renewal of fleets occurs in anticipation of another bumper harvest.

Baler sales have slowed through winter and are now down 19 per cent compared with last year and sales of out-front mowers finished down again by three per cent.

Record numbers

With three above-average seasons and record commodity prices, visitors came from all over Australia, with hay, tillage, fencing and grain handling equipment, tractors, headers and stock handling equipment proving particularly popular.

Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD) chief executive Belinda Anderson says exhibitors reported “enormous” sales from the event.

“This is a record attendance in the 59 years of field days history. It is possibly a number we will never see again,” she says.

“The combination of a public holiday, good weather and the return from COVID-19 created the perfect storm.”

The show also saw a series of highlights with new machines and innovative technologies displayed. Here are some of the key events:

Machine of the Year

Among the vast array of machinery on show at the HMFD was MacDon’s FD2 flex draper, which won the 2022 Henty Machine of the Year Award for the most outstanding new piece of agricultural machinery exhibited at the event.

The FD2 boasts an all-new frame that features a five-sided back tube which creates a durable plat form to handle the toughest of conditions.

MacDon’s ClearCut high-speed cutting system delivers clean cutting at up to 30 per cent faster speeds. The improved knife drive has more power and new knife section geometry creates a 25 per cent larger cutting surface.

“Farmers are taking on more country every year to keep in the game and in doing so you need to operate fast to beat the weather, get the quality grain in the headers as quickly as we can and keep it moving,” MacDon national sales manager Kari Sattler says.

“We also understand it’s not always easy harvesting. Not all our crops are standing so, if it’s flat on the ground, we need to scoop that up.

“This machine is designed to cut at less than an inch off the ground to eliminate obstacles such as rocks or sticks from bouncing over, so as not to cause damage to the combine or make our samples dirty.

“The fact this machine can cut so low yet stay so light on the ground, even in mud, means it really shines as it floats on top.

“This machine will flex over contour banks and will roll over a seven-foot [2.1m] high contour bank. It was made deeper to take more material at higher speeds.”

The draper is available from 25 to 50 feet [7.6 to 15.2m] wide, including a 41 foot [12.5m] version for controlled traffic.

“The MacDon has increased the performance of the draper front by 20 per cent to match the ever-growing high capacities of the modern-day headers,” Henty Award judge Warren Scheetz says.

“MacDon has also increased the flex of the machine by up to 70 per cent over previous models along with the ground following capabilities.

“It is a simple, well-constructed mechanical design featuring ease of use.”

Highly commended

A total of 22 machines and pieces of equipment at the cutting edge of agricultural technology were presented as part of the Henty Machine of the Year showcase.

Judging criteria include the machine’s purpose and suitability, scope of application, construction (durability and design), ease of maintenance and service, ease of operation and adjustment, availability of parts and overall value for money.

While MacDon took out the award, John Deere was highly commended for its See & Spray Select –entered by distributor Hutcheon and Pearce.

Using computer vision and advanced nozzle control technology to target spray weeds in fallow fields, the John Deere Seed & Spray Select significantly reduces herbicide use by applying only what is needed – leading to a 77 per cent reduction in chemicals used.

When using the targeted spray, small cameras integrated in the boom continuously scan the paddock and send data to the sprayer’s vision processing unit.

Once weeds are identified, specific nozzles are activated to target spray them. The number of nozzles activated can vary based on weed pressure within that area of the paddock.

When necessary, the sprayer can switch from targeted spraying to broadcast spraying, all with the push of a button on the in-cab display.

Hutcheon and Pearce sales operations manager Andrew Watt says its ability to both broadcast and selectively spray at the same time at high speeds and in low light conditions sets the machine apart.

“Coupled with that is the ability to not just look at the different colours but also detecting the images as they come towards it – it sets the foundation to add in green on green, weed detection and stand counts,” he says.

Australian-made

A southern NSW designed and manufactured multi-purpose feeder won the Greater Hume Council Award for the best new Australian designed and built agricultural machine.

Steele Steel took out the award for its dual auger multi-purpose 70 bag Ezy Feeder, first launched in 2004 but having evolved into the 2022 winning model described as a “hamburger with the lot”.

“It has a rear additive box, resulting in a better mix of feed, lime, lupins and nutrients if deploying out of the auger or, if trail feeding, it drops it straight out the rear end,” Steele Steel director Daniel Draper says.

“The 305-litre poly injected additive box was designed by a company in Melbourne.

“It has a dual auger system for doing short fillings and an extended auger for using as a mini-grouper or seeder to fill an agri-drill.”

The Ezy Feeder is equipped with digital scales with Bluetooth and an onboard X320 waterproof display while the read-out transfers to a tablet in the vehicle.

“The operator can wireless remote the whole unit from in and out of gear through to operating the single bins. Feed rates can be manually adjusted, or you can remotely add the buffers of salt, minerals and lime,” Draper says.

“The first Bluetooth version prototype was rolled out two years ago and it is now a lot more responsive with less delay. We now hold one of the fastest actu ators, so you get a quicker hitching and adjustment without having to go pneumatic.

“Everything is built in-house at West Wyalong from the ground up.”

Draper paid tribute to his staff operating under challenging times, including material shortages and rising input costs, to get the machines manufactured.

“It doesn’t matter whether it is agricultural, indus trial, commercial or hospitality, getting skilled staff to walk through the door is a struggle,” he says.

“I feel very privileged to win this award and will be a benchmark for us. Everyone is under the pump with builds but the patience and understanding of the farmers supporting their local businesses is great.”

Looking sharp

If so much time was spent checking out the exhibitors at Henty that a haircut was required, a renewably-powered mobile barber shop was on hand to get visitors back at their best.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries H2Cuts was a demonstration trailer themed as a two-stand shearing shed and hosting free haircuts powered by hydrogen across the three days.

The H2Cuts trailer was developed to initiate conversations with the agriculture sector as it explores pathways to reduce energy costs and move towards low or zero emissions energy sources.

“We did 52 haircuts on the first day of Henty –we use it as a conversation starter around diesel, fertiliser and chemicals, and how they can be decarbonised,” he says.

“It’s an easy way to ease into that conversation on renewable energy. We have had a lot of farmers lining up for a haircut with many young fellows keen on having their mullets tidied up.

“We are partnering with NSW Farmers on their site and, as our primary focus is the agricultural sector, we will be heading to the Murrumbateman and Orange field days from here.”

Historical plough

Among the machines and other innovations at HMFD was a special piece of history.

To mark 40 years of the Henty and District Antique Farm Machinery Club, a Lennon single furrow horse drawn plough was unveiled atop a pole at the club’s display site.

Surviving members of the original foundation committee were at Henty to see the dedication of the plough, which was built sometime between 1903 and 1906 by agricultural implement maker Hugh Lennon of Spotswood, Melbourne. He produced a plough suitable for Australian conditions made from wrought iron rather than softer cast iron.

Great-granddaughter Fay Powell and greatgreat grandson Geoff Powell were on hand to unveil the plough.

Geoff says he was thrilled to see work put into restoring the plough and the installation on its pedestal, saying the model was now quite rare.

“The Lennon plough had been manufactured in our family since 1866 and to see one in this condition is wonderful,” he says.

“During the 1880s, Lennon’s were the biggest plough makers in Victoria, with Ned Kelly making his armour from mouldboards taken off Lennon ploughs.”

The armour, on display in the State Library Victoria, is marked with the Lennon stamp.

“It is wonderful to be preserving this sort of history at Henty. Before these ploughs were around farmers were using imported ploughs that weren’t really designed for Australian conditions,” Geoff says.

“Hugh Lennon and a few others changed all that, so this was an important moment in Australian farming.”

The single furrow plough was donated to the Club by the estate of the late Colin Schroeter, a vintage machinery enthusiast from Table Top.

Mojo Motorcycles, based in the Melbourne suburb of Altona North, is a distributor of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), scooters and motorcycles, including CFMoto’s range of off-road vehicles.

Flying the flag for an exciting range of updated models from CFMoto, Mojo recently held a press day at the beautiful Witchmount Estate Winery to the west of Melbourne, giving the press and industry specialists the opportunity to get hands-on with the new machines.

Michael Poynton, managing director and owner of Mojo Motorcycles, kicked off events by highlighting the strength of the long-running relationship between Mojo and CFMoto.

“The one thing which we’ve seen with our relationship with CFMoto is they’re very responsive to the feedback that we provide,” he explained.

“They move very quickly. They take on board feedback, and they’re always looking to improve the quality of their product. There is never a dull moment with CFMoto – they’ve always moved forward. The last three years in particular have seen a lot of organic growth.

“The brand is very well established here, particularly in rural Australia. Back in 2008, when we launched the brand, nobody had heard of CFMoto. Now, we went to AgQuip a few weeks ago and sold in excess of 80 units over three days. It’s all very positive.”

Full makeover

The focus of the day was three updated CFMoto ATV models – the CForce 400, CForce 400 EPS and CForce 520 EPS.

Positioned at the lower-power end of the CForce range, these models have seen a number of updates, designed to make them more comfortable for riders as well as increasing their work capacity.

Towing capacity for example has been increased significantly from 350kg to 612kg, while the loading capacity has been doubled so 30kg can be carried on the front rack and 60kg on the back.

The frame has also been strengthened and lightened, fuel capacity has been increased to 17 litres, and suspension travel has been increased by 26 per cent. And these features are just for starters, said Lance Whitelock, technical support and training manager at Mojo Motorcycles.

“We’ve upped the game now with the 400 and 520. There have been a number of changes – a full chassis change, a full body change that make it a lot higher and a lot quieter.

“The 400 and 520 are the most suited to our farmer market here, which is by far our biggest market. In this model you can see that everything’s been upgraded from the front all the way through to the rear, and everywhere in between.

“Farmers want to be able to do a U-turn without having to do a three-point turn,” he explained when running through how the three models have been improved in terms of user operation.

A range of other CFMoto off-road vehicles were also on display

“With the new steering there is a 25 per cent increase in steering angle, which gives it a lot tighter turning circle. You’ll be surprised at just how tight this turning circle is.”

He pointed out the increase in ground clearance from 245mm to 260mm, as well as the repositioning of the air intake to 120mm higher to reduce the chance of water entering the machine when driving through streams. The shock absorbers are a little softer on the new models to give a smoother ride and there’s a large shield at the front to protect the ATV from rocky trails.

“The CVT cover has also been redesigned,” he added.

“There’s just a few bolts on the outside and it comes off very easily and there’s a drain plug to easily drain water.”

Shielding and redistribution of hot exhaust air also reduces heat from the engine, making the new models a more comfortable ride when out and about on hot days.

The CForce 400 comes with steel wheels, halogen headlights, a 3.5-inch (8.9cm) dash, steel racks and 24-inch (60.9cm) tyres, whereas the 400 EPS version has electronic power steering and the addition of a 1,134kg winch. The CForce 500 EPS has alloy wheels, handguards, LED lights, a five-inch (12.7cm) dash, plastic racks, 25-inch (63.5cm) tyres and the same winch as the 400 EPS.

Both 400 models come with a 31hp (23kW) 400cc engine, while the 500 EPS comes with a 34hp (25kW) 495cc engine.

User focus

All of the tweaks and thoughtful design choices that have been applied are vital for Australian users, said Whitelock, with Australian and New Zealand famers spending a significant amount of time on their ATVs as part of their everyday work.

Looking at user data from the US, it was found that ATVs are operated for around 30 to 50 hours a year on average, he said. In Australia, however, this jumps to 250 hours a year, and New Zealand farmers spend over 450 hours a year on the back of an ATV.

“They rely on them, it’s their livelihood – they use it as their business vehicle,” said Whitelock.

“They can’t have it as a recreational vehicle that they use just once a month – they use it for work all the time.”

This means that having a long service life and a high level of durability is extremely important to Australian customers, who don’t want the hindrance of frequent servicing.

“The way ATVs are used is a lot different as well –they’re a lot slower,” Whitelock continued.

“Think of a dairy farmer going behind his cows, stop-starting, stop-starting. It gets to the point where one of the biggest issues with these vehicles is vibration. They shake themselves to death. Just idling, stopping and starting all the time, with the clutch engaging and disengaging repeatedly.

“They need a good electrical system and a good charge system – that is something that has really impressed me about these machines. Just how well the electrical system holds up.”

With daytime running lights and LED lights as standard, the CFMoto CForce range is set up ready to go and are on sale for $8,490 (CForce 400), $9,490 (CForce 400 EPS) and $9,990 (CForce 520 EPS).

Toyota is bringing the newest edition of its HiLux Rogue to Australia

Toyota has announced that the newest edition of its HiLux Rogue will be coming to showrooms in October, bringing with it plenty of new features to have users tackling their work in style and comfort.

Distinguishing itself from previous models, the Rogue has new 18-inch alloys (previously 17-inch) as well as new wide track overfenders and mudguards.

Front and rear suspension have received a 140mm boost with ride height getting its own lift by about 20mm.

The suspension gets an upgrade from Toyota’s engineers that involves adjusting the front damper angle, as well as lengthening the front suspension arm and front stabiliser bar which all contribute to increased efficiency.

The rear dampers have also been moved further out towards the wheels due to the extending of the rear axle and roll rigidity has been improved by 20 per cent.

Under the hood you’ll find a 2.8L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that puts out 150kW (201 horsepower) of power and 500Nm of torque.

On the inside, there is peak comfort with heated front seats boasting a perforated leather accented upholstery with a panoramic view monitor.

Making it all the better is the Rogue will have no price increase, remaining at $70,200 drive-away.

Ford is levelling up its Australia-specific safety testing for its vehicles with its robots going through driver assist training

Ford has announced that it is advancing its safety focus even further through putting its robotic systems – called Roberto, Ray and Rosie – through advanced driver assist system (ADAS) testing.

“Having our three robots means we now run the full gamut of advanced driver assistance systems scenarios,” ADAS attribute engineer Chet Yakupitiyage says.

“We can also run more tests on any given day or night and with more real-world accuracy than ever before.” Running through a wide variety of ADAS situations, Roberto is the in-car driving tester, with Ray a vulnerable road user and Rosie a guided soft vehicle target. All three are integrated with the test vehicles, able to precisely respond to whatever is thrown at them.

“With Ray we can simulate a child popping out from in front of a parked car, a pedestrian stepping out in front of a vehicle at night, or a cyclist riding across the road in front of the vehicle,” Yakupitiyage says.

“Our robots are the same as those used by my colleagues

With all the newest additions to the Rogue, Toyota sales, marketing and franchise operations vice president Sean Hanley said there’s a lot to love.

“With its wider track and increased ride height, the improved HiLux Rogue not only looks the part, but plays the part too,” he says.

The German Agricultural Society (DLG) has awarded four gold innovation medals ahead of its leading animal husbandry show EuroTier, held every two years in Hanover, Germany.

To be eligible for a gold medal, a product must demonstrate a new concept and a function that either enables a new method or considerably improves a known method.

Judges consider the effects on operating, work management, the environment and energy as well as the importance of the new product in practice and animal welfare when making the decision.

DLG also awarded 14 silver medals, for products that have been redeveloped to create a considerable improvement in its function. Several manufacturers have indicated they are keeping a few new machines under wraps ahead of the event.

DLG says EuroTier 2022 will host 1,700 exhibitors from 55 countries in the first event after EuroTier 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Organisers say this year’s event, from November 15–18, 2022, will be quite the comeback, helping ensure farmers are kept at the forefront of new product development.

Dutch company Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica won gold for its SoundTalks system that continuously analyses the respiratory health status of pigs during rearing and fattening.

The monitors installed in the pens, each of which is equipped with six microphones, register all noises and can distinguish coughing noises from other noises with the aid of an algorithm.

Since the system records 24 hours a day, it is also able to register the intensity of coughing during the resting phase.

It can then indicate the problem to the farmer via a traffic light system directly in the pen or by means of an app on a smartphone.

GEA AutoDry

Dairy equipment specialist GEA won gold for its AutoDry system of naturally drying cows off while reducing the use of antibiotics at the same time.

The AutoDry management software system has been developed initially for conventional milking systems. Current developments are ongoing to make it ready for robotic milking sometime in the future.

It can be activated for individual cows and prepares them gently and effectively for drying off. AutoDry introduces automatic milking cluster removal after reaching a pre-defined target milk volume. AutoDry starts around 10 days before drying off, and gradually reduces milk production each additional day prior to drying off using a patented algorithm.

The new, wave-shaped design of the lip responds to the difference in pressure in the teat cup liner and allows outside air to flow in to equalise it if necessary. This prevents an excessively high head vacuum, delays teat cup ascent and reduces tissue stress.

In the same way, the wave-shaped structure regulates or closes again at the right point in time and keeps the head vacuum stable at an ideal level to hold the cup on the udder. This prevents undesired air ingress or the cups from falling off.

The Active Cleaner cleaning robot from Wasserbauer GmbH is a fully automated system based on AI technology. The camera-guided technology analyses the collected data in real time and detects the manure material to be removed.

Once the device has detected multiple piles of manure, it automatically computes the optimum route, collects the material fully automatically, evaluates the size and quantity, and unloads the manure again in an appropriate location.

Know your nozzles

When it comes to achieving accuracy in spraying when using different agricultural chemicals and fertilisers it can be difficult to know what nozzle is best. Hardi Australia is on hand to provide the expertise you need to achieve the best application and result

Spraying agricultural chemicals accurately while keeping wastage to a minimum is a fine art that requires a thorough understanding of all the factors at play. These include the operation of the sprayer itself - its capacity, speed, coverage and drift control, as well as the chemicals being used. Much of the art comes down to knowing what nozzle type and size is needed to perform the task at hand.

Hardi Australia, which manufactures the majority of Hardi’s sprayers and booms sold in Australia and New Zealand at its Adelaide facility, is an expert in application technology and achieving the control and accuracy required for optimal sprayer performance, with a wide range of application and nozzle technologies to meet your needs.

The basics

The three main pesticide groups are herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. The application of fertilisers through the boom is also becoming more common.

The pesticide dosage, otherwise known as application rate, is the amount of pesticide required for a given area of a particular crop. The application rate may have a minimum and maximum value, and a recommended water volume. The application rate depends on crop and pest stage, weather conditions and application technique being used.

A sprayer’s largely dependent on tank and boom size. Larger booms allow greater coverage per pass, and a larger tank allows greater coverage between fillings, which is often the most time-consuming component of spraying, especially when water access may be limited. Most importantly though, the correct nozzle for the job must be chosen.

Three critical criteria when spraying are: • Boom height: most nozzles are designed to be used 500mm off target, as this provides double overlap for the best coverage, Hardi’s Autoheight, and

AutoTerrain systems ensure that the boom stays at the recommended and desired height throughout operation.

• Application rate: while lower water rates may allow for more passes per tank, higher water volumes allow for a greater amount of coverage per area covered.

• Spray quality (or droplet size): the droplet size required is generally outlined on the label of a chosen chemical, which is dependent on crop and target type, and weather conditions.

There are two further criteria – speed and pressure – however these are a function of, and determined by, the desired application rate, and spray quality.

Hardi nozzles follow the ISO 25358 standard for crop protection equipment, which cover seven size classifications, ranging from very fine to ultra-coarse. The challenge is that no nozzle will give you all spraying options and that is why you sometimes have to compromise.

Technology is here to help. The Hardi Twinforce boom provides air assistance – with a tapered airbag along its length to ensure consistent air volume and velocity it uses a curtain of air to push the droplets down into the canopy, increasing coverage and reducing drift.

Hardi H-Select includes four nozzle switching, allowing for a huge variation of speed and pressure, providing turn compensation, variable rate technology and the ability to change droplet size on the fly from the cab.

Choosing nozzles

Always follow label recommendations regarding application rate, and required spray quality, if there is any uncertainty, contact your agronomist, or the chemical manufacturer for clarification.

FlatFan nozzles provide spray quality from fine through to very coarse and is recommended for all types of pesticide application where optimum coverage is demanded. However, they have very little drift control in most applications. Available in sizes 0075–10.

LowDrift nozzles provide spray quality from medium to very coarse and are recommended when optimum spraying conditions cannot be achieved (risk of drift) and spraying cannot be postponed. Available in sizes 010–05.

MiniDrift nozzles provide spray quality from medium to very coarse. They are standard on all Hardi sprayers as they meet the widest range of requirements for all applications. Available in sizes 015–05.

MiniDrift Duo nozzles have two orifices, and spray 30 degrees forwards and backwards, allowing better penetration of dense canopies and better coverage on vertical targets.

Available in sizes 02–05.

NanoDrift nozzles provide spray quality from medium to extra coarse. New to market, the NanoDrift is a short length, full air induction nozzle, with very few driftable fines, providing up to 90 per cent drift reduction. Available in sizes 02–05.

Fertiliser applications can be applied as a foliar using any of the Hardi nozzles, however, when soil application is required, Hardi offers the Quintastream nozzle: five uninterrupted streams of liquid distributed at various angles to reduce leaf scorching and get the product through to the soil.

Now more than ever, every drop and every dollar counts. As fuel prices continue to go through turmoil, the Aussie farmer needs every edge they can get.

That’s where JSG’s newest Flomax International non-pressure fuelling system, named the TopFill System, enters the scene.

With large machinery using significant amounts of fuel, you want to be confident that it is going nowhere but in the tank.

“The whole purpose of these is to remove risk and cost in various industries,” JSG Industrial Systems product manager James Slowgrove says.

Add to that the potential environmental impact and safety issues arising from diesel spills and Flomax’s re-fuelling systems become a preventative measure for an immense problem.

“If you had a harvester and it ran out of fuel halfway through the crop, you’d leave it there to refuel,” Slowgrove says.

“What happens if there’s a spill in the middle of your crops? You could contaminate the yield, there’s a fair bit of cost involved, you may need to contact the Environmental Protection Agency.

“That’s what these systems are designed to stop – harm to the operators, the equipment and to the environment,” he says.

High-flow fuelling can be a risky operation if you’re using the wrong re-fuelling mechanism for your machinery.

“How the Topfill system from Flomax differentiates itself from the other products on the market is it uses a unique receiver and nozzle to stop anyone from putting a high-flow gun in your system,” Slowgrove says.

“If you’re working on a small tank with a small system, you don’t want a high-flow fuel gun – it will cause damage to the system and tank.

“The Topfill system has a unique receiver that requires you to use a specific nozzle to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

As well as using closed fuel systems to eliminate contamination, Flomax’s simple connection and fuel receiver design prevent your tank from rupturing.

“Once it fills up the tank, it will shut off and prevent you from putting too much fuel in your tank,” Slowgrove says.

“They are all revolved around reducing spillage, damage and costs, but most importantly increasing safety in the refuelling process.”

There are non-pressure systems available for both large and small fuel tanks.

The large installations are designed to upgrade an existing pressure fuel system, with a number of options available depending on your tank, with a high flow diesel transfer operating between 151–800 litres per minute.

The small fuel tank Topfill system, on the

other hand, is an easily attachable, self-contained aluminium unit that is designed for flow rates between 19–265 litres per minute.

Flomax ensures only the best are working on its pressure systems, with everything designed, tested and built in-house.

“Some of the materials they use is aircraft-grade aluminium. What they pride themselves on is everything is done in-house, whether that’s designing or machining,” Slowgrove says.

“They import in billets of aluminium, and they machine it all themselves so there’s no third parties during the production process.

“They test it all themselves before a product is dispatched.”

Victoria-based JN&R Engineering is known across Australia for its high quality, heavy-duty machinery, with the Leopard ejector in particular proving to be a very popular tool for farmers and earthmoving specialists.

Replacing the older LE model, the Leopard ejector has carried its legacy forward with an increased load capacity, towing efficiency and versatility.

“Our Leopard Ejector is designed to be towed behind a front wheel assist tractor,” JN&R Engineering director Gino D’Angelo says.

“It’s targeted at farmers and smaller contractors, with an increased carrying capacity, an elevated pool to allow the material to flow easier, and dual side tilt at the rear, giving you the ability to lift either side of the machine and work in a raised position. There are also the rippers at the rear and it comes with a cushion hitch option if you require.”

The Leopard ejector comes in five models, ranging from the smallest E10.0 for 280 horsepower (209kW) tractors, which provides a 3,000mm cutting width, to the E14.0 for 400hp (298kW) tractors, which provides a 4,200mm cutting width.

There is also a dumping version of the Leopard, the Leopard B, which has a new dumping/tipping

bucket and also comes in a range of models.

D’Angelo says the popularity of the Leopard models is down to a strong price point and the fact that they are towed behind tractors, which farmers already have on hand, so it’s quick and easy to couple the attachment and get straight to work.

“These are used mostly for irrigation and levelling paddocks,” he explains, “removing topsoil, building it up and then returning the clay or topsoil back to the paddock. So, it gives you better coverage flow and better yields at the end.”

With the third La Niña event in as many years continuing to bring heavy rainfall across parts of Australia, D’Angelo says that the Leopard really stands out due to its ability to handle a wide variety of soil conditions, particularly heavy, wet mud.

“Whatever you put in there, the ability of the ejector means it pushes it out,” he says.

“Because of the work conditions and the sticky nature of the material it works in, the ejectors have been a really big seller.”

Based in Kyabram in the north of Victoria, JN&R Engineering has dealers across the country, from Tasmania up to far north Queensland and across to WA. But the company has also expanded further afield, with an ejector currently in operation in Indonesia and several units sent over to the US.

“Just before COVID we exported a couple to Los Angeles in California, but the COVID sort of pulled that up,” D’Angelo says.

“So, hopefully, we can get that market back in the next 12–18 months.”

But the international focus doesn’t mean JN&R is resting on its laurels, with D’Angelo saying that ongoing feedback from customers is vital to the process of developing its machinery.

“We’re continuing to evolve, so we’ve been listening to our customers with what’s working and what’s not working, but the Leopard really is a winner and we’re very happy with it – it’s ability, the agility of it, the conditions it can work in – it’s fantastic.”

More than 20 years ago, Kuhn Farm Machinery led a revolution against the fertiliser industry, with the introduction of its electronic massflow control (EMC) technology.

The emergence of Kuhn’s EMC technology was a breakthrough innovation in precision farming. The days of spreading fertiliser at a set rate, with little consideration for the plant requirements or spreading accuracy, were coming to an end.

Kuhn’s EMC technology has been designed to measure and continually adjust the application rate on each separate disc as required. The design means that operators no longer have the risk of over or under-application once the application rate (kg/ha) has been set. Managing the even flow and application of fertiliser across uneven terrain and undulating slopes will optimise the result for operators by improving the crop’s yield.

Kuhn offers a wide range of fertiliser spreaders, both mounted and trailed options for farming operations both small and large. Two of Kuhn’s mounted spreaders are the Axis and MDS.2.

Kuhns’ Axis fertiliser spreader offers operators precision spreading with its EMC and coaxial distribution adjustment (CDA) technology. CDA technology allows operators to adapt to different challenges, including different fertilisers, variable application rates and multiple working widths.

CDA has two key features that address operator challenges, making it unique. They are: 1. A pivoting hopper base. This allows a quick adaptation to various fertilisers and working widths by adjusting the drop point of the fertiliser on the distribution discs.

2. Specially designed metering outlets close to the centre of the disc that allow multiple supply points to the blades. This ensures a constant flow of fertiliser spread in an even pattern.

Kuhn Axis models are compatible with both the Quantron and ISOBUS electric controls. Quantron is a dedicated control box for the machine and is compatible with the different terminals on the market for variable rate application and section control by GPS. Alternatively, operators could use the ISOBUS control terminal, where the machine is controlled with the CCI 1200 or CCI 50 ISOBUS terminal, or other ISOBUS terminals on the market.

The Kuhn MDS.2 mounted fertiliser spreader is known for its simple and effective usability. It has working widths of 10–24m, with a single-cone hopper capacity range of 500–2,000L.

Ideal for vineyards, orchards and vegetable crops, the MDS.2 is designed with a single hopper that creates a perfect centre of gravity, ensuring that there is always enough fertiliser being fed into the hopper. The MDS 20.2 has the largest hopper capacity in the range and can hold up to three bulkbags at a time, reducing the operator’s downtime for re-loading.

Kuhn’s multi disc system (MDS) spreading discs are designed for standard or late spreading. The MDS allows operators access to established (or tall) crops, while ensuring precision with granulated fertilisers, cover crop seeds or anti-slug pellets.

The disc system can be adjusted according to the type of fertilisers, working width, length, angle and orientation of the crop.

All models in the Kuhn MDS.2 range have been designed with a slow rotating agitator, rotating at 180rpm. The slow rotation creates a regular fertiliser flow without damaging any of the fertiliser granules and without clogging the outlets. Contract vs employee

For those looking around for harvest labour, you might be interested in a recent decision by the High Court on employment law.

Previously when employing staff, farmers have been locked into the Pastoral Award which, despite its name, includes broadacre cropping.

The Award makes for interesting reading, covering everything anyone could ever think of when employing someone, including setting afternoon or night shift penalty rates level 1 ($26.73) to Level 8 ($33.26), overtime ($37.42–$46.57) and Sunday penalty rates ($37.42–$46.57).

But that’s just the beginning as there is the noncasual loading of 115 per cent, for permanent night shift workers 130 per cent and for non-successive after noons or night shift penalties for the first three hours 150 per cent. This is unless, of course, they are casual, then it is 175 per cent, or after three hours 200 per cent, and of course we have Saturday, which after the first two hours is 225 per cent, as is all day Sunday.

But I don’t need to tell you all that because you already have that all marked up on your white board in the office.

That, plus the amounts for the paid and unpaid meal and crib breaks, which of course is all depending on the length of the overtime, and on and on it goes – all 57 pages of it, not to mention all the appendages.

Ah, if only we could only have a single one-page agreement that sweeps all this rubbish away.

Well guess what, a recent High Court decision has just done that by allowing employers to walk away from the Award and employ people as contractors.

Up until now Fair Work Australia, lawyers and un ions used a long series of tests to determine if a worker was an independent contractor or an employee.

It was known as the multifactorial test – a basket of behavioural indicators only one of which is the written contract.

Those indicators include consideration of whether a person could work for another company, which party provided the necessary equipment, how much latitude was involved in decision making, knock-off time, etc.

These multifactorial tests have been used for decades to run cases to declare that a contractor is an employee and then hit the employer with penalties and additional costs while keeping employees locked in the industrial relations system.

The Australian Taxation Office loved the game as it ensured employers were responsible for collecting

PAYE and Super payments from employers. But now it’s all changed.

In the nation-changing case brought before the High Court, a 22-year-old British backpacker who had travelled to Australia on a working holiday visa and worked for builders had signed a very detailed con tract setting out his obligations, rights, warranties and entitlements as a contractor.

The unions got involved and off to court it went. In the end the High Court agreed with the lower courts that he was an employee in terms of his onthe-job actions but said the multifactorial test “is apt to generate considerable uncertainty, both for parties and for the courts”.

“It is the task of the courts to promote certainty with respect to a relationship of such fundamental impor tance,” the Court found.

The High Court therefore declared in this case that the terms of the relationship were “compre hensively committed to a written contract … there is no reason why the legal rights and obligations so established should not be decisive of the character of the relationship”.

These simple words are a gamechanger for farmers because it means we can finally throw away the Award and sign a simple contract that brings certainty and clarity to what is a commercial contract.

Experts say the decision effectively means that if lawyers draft a contract correctly businesses can avoid minimum Award pay and conditions, workers’ compensation, superannuation, redundancy and other statutory requirements.

Assuming the government does not tie us up in complex legislation, farmers should be thinking about signing up their next workers as contractors rather than employees to provide a service, be it chaser bin driver or mechanic.

But be aware there are some loose ends that still need clarification.

The next big question is where does taxation law sit? Do contractors still have to deduct PAYE and Super? This is now all up in the air as a result of the High Court decision, with the issue being sent down to the Full Federal Court to determine the matter.

In passing, though, the High Court did acknowledge the arguments put to it that were not insubstantial, which means we could well end up with farm workers contracted to provide services and be responsible for their own tax and Super.

Until that’s sorted out, I would be getting some seri ous advice from a specialist legal industrial relations firm about what a employment contract should look like and if you can contract your way out of the Award.

I suspect the smart thing to do until the legal issues are settled is stay well clear of Fair Work Australia by paying your new contract driver well above the minimum Award, factoring in overtime, casual rates, meal breaks, etc.

No doubt most farmers already do by paying the in dustry standard that seems to be around $35 an hour.

If farmers continue to deduct the tax and Super and pay it on their behalf its probably not much different to what most farmers already do but coming under a contract law gets you out of unfair dismissal and future claims of back wages for overtime.

One last thing. Nothing in the High Court decision alters the duties owed to workers engaged as employ ees or contractors under state work health and safety legislation. The fines dwarf anything you are ever go ing to cop from the tax office or Fair Work Australia for back pay or tax so sort out your safety training system well before worrying about extracting yourself from the award system.

Stock of lower-horsepower tractors is back up to healthy levels at Case IH dealerships around the country, the company says.

Case IH says supply of lower-horsepower tractors such as the Farmall, Puma and Maxxum ranges is strong right around the country, but adds that the tractors are also in high demand.

Case IH Australia and New Zealand product manager for mid-horsepower and compact tractors Seamus McCarthy says the new stock includes the recently-launched Stage V Puma and the new JXM models in the Farmall range.

McCarthy also says the supply challenges faced by the agricultural industry across the past 18 months have been difficult to navigate.

“There’s no doubt the issue of supply has been a challenge in the past few years, for a whole variety of reasons, but in the past six months that situation has started to improve and we’re now seeing dealerships with good numbers of our mid-size and compact tractor ranges, and stock is continuing to come into the country,” McCarthy says.

Farmer lobby welcomes introduction of telehandler work licence in Victoria

A new high-risk work licence (HRWL) specifically for telehandlers is set to be developed and introduced by the Victorian government

The licence was approved by Minister for Workplace Safety Ingrid Stitt and will be encompassed in the existing non-slewing mobile crane licence (CN licence) issued by WorkSafe Victoria.

Following the decision, telehandler operators will now have flexibility to choose between obtaining a new telehandler HRWL by completing a new telehandler-specific Unit of Competency or maintaining the existing CN licence requirement.

WorkSafe Victoria will now work to develop a detailed implementation plan, including expected timelines and the process required to develop and implement the targeted HRWL for telehandler operators.

Telehandler operators will not be required to hold both licences.

The approval for the new HRWL follows years of campaigning from industry bodies such as the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF), which argued

the existing licence requirements had not kept up with modern farming practices.

VFF transport and infrastructure chair Ryan Milgate welcomes the decision as “a great win for farmers and farm safety”.

“Telehandlers have become an increasingly popular method of safely moving hay on Victorian farms and it is critical regulation keeps pace with safe, modern practice.”

The growing popularity of telehandlers in the agricultural sector – 77 per cent of telehandlers were sold in that industry compared to 33 per cent in the construction sector in 2019 – caused the VFF to lobby for the change. Under previous laws, Victoria was one of just two Australian states which required a crane licence to operate a telehandler with a capacity of three tonnes or more with forks.

As of January 2020, farmers were also required to attain a dogging licence for work at height.

WorkSafe will now work with bodies such as the VFF to develop and implement the changes and ensure training is accessible, targeted and meets the needs of telehandler operators across all industries.

Small improvements for Australia’s dairy market are likely to cap off Q4 2022, Rabobank predicts

China’s dairy market will hold the key to success for the global dairy industry during the fourth quarter of 2022, according to a new Rabobank report.

The agribank’s Q3 Global Dairy Quarterly says that Australia has enjoyed an 18 per cent bump in total dairy volumes across the last financial year, compared to the year before.

Aussie liquid milk was the benefactor of overseas corridors opening back up, particularly to China, though the presence of lockdowns in China earlier this year did impact demand.

The prospect of future lockdowns in China will continue to impact the dairy industry going forward, the bank says.

“Rabobank remains cautious on Chinese dairy market assumptions, which already point to a more absent Chinese buyer into 2023,” the report says.

“Import demand from other emerging markets is unlikely to fill the void, loosening the global market somewhat.”

After a 3.9 per cent drop in milk production during 2021–22, Rabobank predicts Australian milk to make a slight recovery in 2022–23 in the form of a 1.1 per cent increase.

The report forecasts dairy prices to stay at record highs this coming financial year, with prices ranging between A$9.50–10/kgMS.

However, Rabobank also predicts that these highs mean prices have likely peaked.

“Rabobank does not foresee further upside in milk prices in the current season given the weaker commodity market settings,” the report says. For local consumers, a 15 per cent retail price increase can be attributed to the increased costs of production, overall food value inflation as well as the bump in general milk value from producers. Globally, the report predicts a collision between increasing milk supplies and demand in Q4, as well as continued risks of inclement weather in the market.

“Global feed benchmark prices have fallen through Q3 2022, largely as a result of a Ukraine grain corridor opening and Russian exports lifting,” Rabobank senior analyst Michael Harvey says.

“Nonetheless, extreme heat in the US threatens crops, and EU spring crops also suffer from unfavourable weather. And more disruption to Black Sea trade is still possible.”

The price of Australian farmland is experiencing another year of double-digit growth in 2022, agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank says in its most recent Australian Agricultural Land Price Outlook.

The outlook indicates prices across the board have increased by 27 per cent from 2021, with dairy and grazing properties up 40 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.

Report author Stefan Vogel says the prices were driven by record low interest rates, widespread rainfall and agricultural commodity highs.

A state-by-state breakdown indicate NSW saw the majority of the increase with 30 per cent of the share, followed by Queensland (22 per cent), Victoria (20 per cent), WA (12 per cent), South Australia (11 per cent) and Tasmania (4 per cent).

There were plenty of big-time buyers in 2021, with nine per cent of grazing land and six per cent of arable farm purchases going above a whopping $10 million.

Buyers remain a healthy mix of locals and people from overseas, the report says, with further restrictions by the Foreign Investment Review Board not deterring investors from overseas.

Vogel says he expects corporate inflows in agricultural land to remain strong.

“Investors will continue to be attracted to

agriculture, not only for competitive returns but also because returns are often less volatile and not necessarily correlated to other asset classes,” he says

Holders of land will be pleased to know the report doesn’t predict interest rates will push farmland values down, but higher operating costs and a dip in predicted income will help temper the growth rate into 2023.

Only a forced herd liquidation, a massive drought or slower than predicted growth would cause the farmland price market to decline, he adds.

“Our base case forecast is that farmland price growth will continue, but we expect a significant slowdown in the rate of growth of prices in 2023 and the years beyond 2027 from the unprecedented strong growth seen recently,” Vogel says.

“The tide is turning slightly as the land market needs to take another breather after the staggering growth over the past 18 months. And also given the increased cost of finance and of farm inputs like energy and fertiliser.

“There is also the likelihood of agricultural commodity prices and production volumes in coming years falling short of the exceptionally high of even record levels in 2021 and the first half of 2022.”

Nutrien and CareFlight focus on regional emergency trauma skills training

Nutrien Ag Solutions and CareFlight have launched a new partnership that will upskill people in regional communities with life-saving training in 180 locations across Australia.

CareFlight’s CEO Mick Frewen says the not-forprofit aeromedical organisation identified an urgent need to strengthen early intervention skills on Australian farms where access to swift medical help is not as commonplace as metropolitan areas.

“First responders, whether local passers-by, farmers or others, may need to help sustain life for trauma patients until professional medical help arrives. Over more than 35 years our teams have experienced first-hand how important those first few minutes after an accident can be,” Frewen says.

“Through the Emergency Trauma Training initiative, CareFlight’s team of clinical professionals will deliver training that’s practical and targeted to those working in the agriculture industry.”

Nutrien Ag Solutions head of safety Richard Dovison says the more people that have these skills in their toolbox, the more lives that can be saved.

“According to SafeWork Australia, the fatality rate on Australian farms is almost eight times higher than the rate across other industries,” Dovison says.

“The facts are very clear on the high-risk profile associated with working in agriculture. Failure to address these unenviable statistics will result in no improvement in the safety and health of regional communities. So, the goal for us is clear – we will help equip our ag communities with essential skills and training to protect lives and reduce fatalities.”

Dovison says Nutrien Ag Solutions’ 4,000 employees and farmer customers across the country work with heavy machinery, large animals and in isolated locations every day, often hundreds of kilometres from the nearest hospital or emergency clinic.

“Every day regional Australians often find themselves at the frontline of emergency incidents, so we want to make sure our communities are prepared and confident to take the right actions that could save a life,” he says The training sessions will be held over the next three years.

Mental health resource recognised for Excellence in Agricultural Research

Living the life of a farmer might be idealised as an escape from urban pressures, but it can frequently be isolating and stressful, with fires, floods, drought and disease all heavily impacting the industry.

And while that’s general knowledge amongst those working in agriculture, it’s rare for research to explore these issues.

The University of South Australia’s free online resource ifarmwell.com.au has worked to help keep farmers connected when they’re not feeling okay, and to better cope with the challenges life throws their way.

It was recently recognised for its work in the farming mental health space after it received a national award for Excellence in Agricultural Research as part of the Australian Farmer of the Year awards.

Built on the back of 10 years of research, ifarmwell. com.au was designed with heavy input from farmers, making it a relatable and meaningful space to reach out in.

Creator of ifarmwell.com.au, UniSA’s Dr Kate Gunn, says that farmers have always been

practical problem solvers, and the ifarmwell.com. au resource is a tool for them to address their mental state when something’s wrong.

“Having grown up on a farm, I’ve seen firsthand how poor mental health and wellbeing can affect close-knit communities,” Gunn says.

“Living on the land can be wonderful. But it can also be isolating and challenging.

“ifarmwell.com.au has been designed in partnership with farmers. It takes in their unique skills, beliefs, and strengths, and helps them build a range of practical strategies that can help them manage life’s ups and downs.

“It is very exciting to me that the importance of farmers’ mental health and wellbeing has been recognised in these ways.”

Gunn says the awards served as a helpful reminder to farmers that investing time into maintaining their wellbeing has never been more important.

Decarbonising the meat industry using geothermal technology

On behalf of the Australian Government, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) recently announced $838,000 in funding to Hardwick Processors to install a 1MW (thermal) demonstration scale heat pump and upgrade the electrical supply system at its meat processing plant in Kyneton, Victoria.

The heat pump upgrade will enable the site to produce enough hot water to operate at levels to improve shelf life and access further export market growth, while helping to reduce the site's reliance on natural gas by over 75 per cent. The project will also be able to benefit from Hardwick Processors’ previous commitments to reducing emissions by utilising existing on-site renewable energy supply infrastructure of 2.5MW solar PV and a 2MWh battery storage system.

In 2019, Hardwick Processors was selected to undertake a feasibility study into using renewable energy to provide process heat, as part of a project led by the Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP) and funded by ARENA. The study found that it would be most efficient to run a smaller and less expensive heat pump continuously, storing hot water in existing thermal storage tanks. The positive results led to ARENA funding the current demonstration scale project. In addition to the heat pump installation, Hardwick Processors will also upgrade the electrical supply system to become a high voltage customer, taking any excess electricity required from the Powercor network. This upgrade will provide valuable insights into the electrical supply infrastructure requirements associated with completely electrifying process heat for industry.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller says the demonstration project will help to reduce barriers to uptake for the industry.

“The project offers us the opportunity to trial how using heat pumps can reduce reliance on natural gas and prove to the industry that this is technically and economically feasible and a viable solution to dramatically reduce emissions at their facilities,” he says.

“Hardwick Processors is at the forefront of helping to reduce emissions in the meat processing industry. Having already installed on-site solar PV and battery, it is now able to demonstrate how the hot water demand of industrial processing can be managed with the addition of heat pumps and use of thermal energy.

“This is a solution that we could see being replicated across other businesses in the industry.”

Forging ahead

Farming exports forecast to reach record $70.3 billion, with near-record levels of wheat and canola production predicted for 2022–23

Exceptional growing conditions and high global prices are continuing to benefit Australian agricultural production and exports.

The ABARES September quarter Agricultural Commodities Report is forecasting agricultural export earnings to climb to a record $70.3 billion for 2022–23 – almost 50 per cent more than what it was 10 years ago after accounting for inflation.

ABARES executive director Dr Jared Greenville says that the industry’s overall forecast gross value of $81.8 billion shows it is performing strongly, with cropping leading the way.

“Winter crop prospects in Australia are looking very promising at the beginning of spring – we’re forecasting a 55.5 million tonne harvest,” Greenville says.

“Meat production is also rebounding, with the national herd and flock returning to predrought levels.

“Favourable seasonal conditions are expected to persist, but global inflation and rising costs of farm inputs could cloud outlook for demand and farm incomes.

“It’s the first time our exports are expected to exceed $70 billion, showing the ability of our farmers to navigate considerable global economic uncertainty and to make a strong contribution to global food supplies.”

Greenville says the latest ABARES forecasts factored in tapering global growth – and the likelihood of a third straight La Niña, roughly a once in 30-year event.

“Widespread inflation and a sluggish Chinese economy are the main watchpoints,” he says.

“We’re seeing Australian agriculture leaning into this uncertainty, with continued global demand for our food and fibre, another bumper winter crop and the forecast of continued favourable growing conditions.”

The value of cotton exports is forecast to reach a record $7 billion in 2022–23 to be the third most val uable export commodity after wheat ($11.7 billion) and beef ($10.2 billion).

“Harvesting delays mean most of the bumper 2021–22 cotton crop will be exported during 2022–23,” Greenville says.

The ABARES September 2022 Australian Crop Report, which has also just been released, is forecasting near record levels of wheat and canola production for 2022–23.

“For wheat we’re looking at 32.2 million tonnes, and for canola we’re expecting 6.6 million tonnes, just shy of the records last year,” Greenville says.

“Barley production has also been strong and is forecast to reach 12.3 million tonnes, the fourth largest on record.”

Planting of summer crops in 2022–23 is forecast to be well above average, supported by available soil moisture and significant areas of land previously left fallow during winter.

The 1MW thermal demonstration pump will be installed at a meat processing plant in Kyneton, Victoria.

Growing Solutions Australia, based in Cabarlah, just north of Toowoomba in Queensland, recently purchased a new Toyota 8FG18 counterbalance forklift from Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA).

However, the nursery’s owner Jamie Currie is now also the proud owner of a new LHE150 electric pallet jack after winning TMHA’s Growers Prize Giveaway.

“We don’t win a lot of things, but it was brilliant to get the phone call,” says Currie.

“Sometimes you’re just happy with the meat tray at the pub, but this time we won an electric pallet jack which is great!”

Having started Growing Solutions Australia five years ago with his wife, Currie had previously been using an old forklift that came with the Cabarlah nursery when he purchased it. However, the need arose for a replacement.

“One of my mates who also owns a forklift bought it through the same salesman, Max Reindl,” Currie says.

“Knowing that a colleague also purchased one through Max, knowing that it was a Toyota and know ing the Toyota comes with all these different benefits and its reputation, it was a simple decision for me.”

Having moved from an older competitor’s forklift,

Currie says the Toyota 8FG18 machine offers a significant step up in features and usability, making for a simple-to-operate machine.

“I’d just say that from the machine that I’ve moved from, from a business owner’s point of view, there’s obviously the safety features, and it’s just a very smooth and easy machine to operate.”

The prize of the LHE150 electric pallet jack was an added bonus as it features a compact design perfect for light applications, and a maintenance free lithi um-ion battery for fast charging.

When asked if he would recommend TMHA to others in the industry, he didn’t hesitate to say that he would “100 per cent” encourage others to jump on board.

“My response is very clichéd but if you look at people sharing their positive experiences in the media, mine is pretty much the same,” he says.

“From making contact with the rep, to the rep coming out and responding straight away, to delivering and having the machine, it was all made very simple.And with the quality of the product – in my opinion, if I compare it to the quality of other products out there, it was a no-brainer for me to go with Toyota.”

Precision decision

Swedish engineering company Sandvik has acquired precision tools manufacturer Sphinx Tools

Sandvik has signed and completed an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the equity interests in the Switzerland-based Sphinx Tools Ltd and its wholly owned subsidiary P. Rieger Werkzeugfabrik AG.

Sphinx Tools’ offering primarily consists of precision solid round tools (micro tools) and surgical cutting tools. The customers are mainly within the automotive, aerospace and medical segments. The company will be reported within Sandvik Coromant – a division within Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions.

“With the acquisition of Sphinx Tools we continue to execute on our shift to growth strategy,” CEO and president of Sandvik Stefan Widing says.

“Strengthening our position in round tools is one strategic priority for our machining solutions business and with this acquisition we will expand our product portfolio in the high growth area of micro tools.”

Sphinx Tools enhances Sandvik Coromant’s product offering within solid round tools and is an established player in the adjacent surgical cutting tools market. The company is present in Europe with three production sites in Switzerland and has global distribution.

“The acquisition of Sphinx Tools fits very well with our strategy to strengthen our position in round tools. With Sphinx Tools we will have the opportunity to take a global leading position in micro tools, a premium niche of round tools, expand our product portfolio and enter an adjacent area of surgical tools. We are very pleased to welcome Sphinx Tools to the Group,” president of Sandvik Machining Solutions Nadine Crauwels says.

Sphinx Tools was founded in 1994, has around 115 employees and is based in Switzerland. In 2021, the company generated revenues of approximately 292 MSEK (A$39.8 million). The EBITA margin is neutral to Sandvik. Impact on Sandvik’s earnings per share will be limited, yet slightly positive. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
