FROM THE EDITOR
E
Welcome to the latest edition of Farms & Farm Machinery In the previous edition, this column discussed one of the goals of Farms & Farm Machinery’s relaunch earlier this year, which was to bring you more case studies and customer testimonials from Australian farmers who are using the machinery we write about in their daily lives. Another one of our goals was to give extra attention to contractors and recognise the increasingly important role they play in the Australian farming landscape. Shortly after the relaunch, we promoted our plans to create a Contractor Showcase and we are pleased to bring you the results of that in this edition. This directory, which was free for contractors to register themselves for, is a database which shows contractors in each state (and a bonus one from the United States) plus their areas of expertise. Every submission which was received has been included and we hope this will be a useful resource for farmers who may be needing contractors at harvest time – or any other time of the year. Speaking of new resources for farmers, one of our articles this month focuses on the newly launched app Fill Up Today. Described as being like Uber for farm materials management, this has the potential to change the way both contractors and farmers operate. On the cover this edition is a story from Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales – their ever-increasing product offering is anything but miniature.

We have another product review, courtesy of an Elho Scorpio rock picker, which has been tested in New Zealand but is available locally through Colac Ag. Claas has been busy, launching a suite of products in the mower, combine harvester and wheel loader space. We showcase each of these in depth, as we also do with Rata Equipment’s upgraded compact Power Claw. Other products which we have devoted time to in this edition include Bomford’s rotary cutters and the TamaWrap+. There is also a case study of Dieci’s Poultry Pro telehandlers in action, thanks to the team at Victorian poultry producer Hazeldenes. Victoria is also the home of this year’s AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award winner Nikki Davey, and we have caught up with her to learn all about her business Grown Not Flown. All of this comes alongside a stack of industry news and some changes and acquisitions in the dealership world. As always, happy reading!

Food for thought Kangaroos could hold the key to solving two conflicting problems – increasing red meat supply and reducing emissions Incorporating kangaroos into cattle and sheep grazing systems could help Australia to increase its production of red meat while reducing carbon emissions. This is the conclusion of research by consultancy firm Australian Wildlife Services (AWS), which has proposed a kangaroo grazing system that would also provide a new income stream for farmers. The research says kangaroos emit “significantly less” carbon dioxide than other red meats, with just 0.6 tonnes per kilogram of saleable carcase compared to 7.6 tonnes and 8.6 tonnes for cattle and sheep respectively. AWS also says 4.5 million kangaroos which were part of the national harvest quota were wasted in 2020, which could have made a difference to emissions. “That number of kangaroos would produce the same amount of meat as 400,000 cattle,” AWS founder and Australian National University honorary professor George Wilson says. “You would not have to increase the national cattle herd and you’d save the

amount of carbon equivalents which is nearly two per cent of total beef emissions.” The AWS proposal is for kangaroos to be incorporated into sheep and cattle grazing systems across Australia’s rangelands, areas which are typically unsuitable for cropping, and graziers would be given state government entitlements to take a specified number of the wild population. The AWS research also found removing livestock greater than one year old from regions with already heavy kangaroo populations could eliminate about 785,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Further benefits of this would include reduced soil compaction and increased plant cover and root biomass, due to the lower pressure exerted on the ground by kangaroos. Another benefit of increasing kangaroo production, Wilson says, is the fact it would just require better utilising an existing industry rather than needing to invent a new one. “Virtually every supermarket has kangaroo products on the shelves, so we do not
need to invent a new industry; we just need to do it better,” he says. “We’re back where the beef industry was probably 40 or 50 years ago when you’d buy some T-bone steaks and some of them would be tough because you didn’t know whether you were eating a really old animal or a young one, or a male or a female. “That’s all changed in beef and sheep production,” he says. “There is now a strong interest in quality of the product all the way down the value chain. “So, if similar care and product differentiation were taken with kangaroo products coming off the property, the value could also increase. “Kangaroos are a source of low-carbon meat and there are few other opportunities, demonstrated at scale, that reduce enteric methane.”
Australia’s peak farming body has a new president. Victorian grain and livestock producer David Jochinke has been elected president of the National Farmers Federation, stepping up from the vice-president role he has held for the past six years. He replaces Fiona Simson, who retired from the position after seven years at the NFF’s helm. “I want to thank the members for trusting me to lead the NFF at such an important moment,” Jochinke says. “Australian agriculture has so much opportunity ahead of it as we continue striving for our $100 billion vision. “But right now, we’re also facing enormous challenges – from a difficult season in many parts of the country, to a trying policy environment in Canberra. “I look forward to working hard for farmers across Australia to give them a say on the issues facing the sector.” Jochinke is from Murra Murra in western Victoria and was also the president of that state’s Farmers Federation between 2016 and 2020, a role he shared alongside the NFF vice-presidency. His step up meant the NFF vice-presi-
dent’s position also became vacant, and that has now been taken by John Hassall, a farmer from East Pingelly in Western Australia. Another new face in a leadership position at NFF is Queensland cotton producer Hamish McIntyre, who has been elected as a director. Simson stepped down from the presidency after reaching her maximum two-term limit, during which time she spearheaded the NFF’s push for $100 billion in farmgate output by 2030. “Fiona leaves an incredible legacy that will resonate for years to come,” Jochinke says. “She’s left nothing on the table, and her considered, collaborative and engaging leadership has left farmers everywhere in a far stronger position. “I thank her for the partnership we’ve had during our time together at the NFF and wish her, Ed and their family all the best for their next chapter. “I also acknowledge the other candidates who nominated for the position, who are both talented and passionate advocates who’ll continue to play a critical role within the NFF.”

CASA wants to hear from farmers as part of the new drone survey
Safety survey The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) wants to hear from farmers who are using drones. Ilana Cohen reports. CASA’s survey is researching the utility and benefits of beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) remotely piloted aircrafts (RPA). Drones, which are RPAs, are leading many new advances in global and agricultural industries. The new survey, ‘BVLOS drone operations in regional Australia’ was created to keep up with the quickly advancing technologies. The data and feedback collected will be used to help design regulatory initiatives for CASA. This survey comes after CASA implemented changes to drone regulations for automating low-risk operations last year.
The new national survey’s goal is to connect with the drone user community and inform them of regulatory changes for lower-risk BVLOS operations. CASA’s manager of RPAS Policy and Regulations, Jaclyn Smith, is encouraging everyone to participate. “We especially want to hear from the rural and regional sectors that use drones in agricultural work such as spray management, mustering, farm and land management, or any activity to deliver agricultural outcomes,” she says. CASA aims to create a snapshot of the Australian drone sectors’ BVLOS opera-
tions and identify the benefits as well as the challenges of increased usage. One area the survey will focus on is identifying where regulatory improvement may be applied for lower-risk, low-altitude drone operations. “Drone safety is the highest priority for the drone pilots I work with, and creating a workplace that has continuous system improvements is crucial,” specialist drone operator Renee Bartolo says. Bartolo is working on projects with rangers and First Nations communities in both regional and remote locations, and urges everyone to partake in the survey. “Taking part in the survey means we can provide constructive feedback to CASA to assist in the ongoing development of a set of drone rules which will benefit the sector and industry, particularly for BVLOS operations,” she says. It is important for every drone user to have the opportunity to give honest feedback so CASA and farmers can continue to promote safety and foster community.
NFF will help farmers take advantage of government grants to bolster their connectivity
Tech support The National Farmers Federation (NFF) has launched a free information service to expand the on-farm digital connectivity landscape. Ilana Cohen reports. The NFF’s independent service will provide practical, personalised and free information to farmers through its Regional Tech Hub, which is part of the Federal Government’s two-year $30 million On Farm Connectivity Program (OFCP).
8
Farms & Farm Machinery
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland told the NFF’s National Conference that the OFCP will support primary producers, encouraging them to take advantage of connected machinery and sensor technology by providing a 50 per cent rebate (between $3,000 and $30,000) on the cost of eligible equipment, including training and installations. For the first year, funding of $15 million will be available until 30 June 2024 or until funding is exhausted. “We live in an increasingly digital and competitive society and measures like the On Farm Connectivity Program will ensure our agricultural sector has every opportunity and the best technology to take advantage of an increasingly digital economy,” Rowland says. The Minister also mentioned plans to improve the delivery of the Universal Service Obligation (USO) - a position applauded by NFF CEO Tony Mahar. “We have long been advocating for accessible, reliable, quality and affordable connectivity services in the bush, with our recent nationwide survey of more than 1,600 farmers highlighting three quarters hold concerns around access to telecommunications,” he says.
Mahar adds that while some farmers have implemented newer technologies in their practices, poor connectivity and a lack of digital and/or connectivity literacy has hindered its wider adoption.. Farmers can contact the NFF Regional Tech Hub through a hotline and book in-service, with operators providing expert tech advice and answering questions. Regional Tech Hub manager Jen Medway says the information farmers request will be tailored to their individual needs, and they will be guided step-by-step on whatever service they choose. “Farmers can pick up the phone or reach out on our website, to talk specifically about their on-farm connectivity requirements – whether that be how to extend connectivity from the house to the machinery shed or yards, or how to support some of the highly sophisticated production networks and systems they wish to adopt,” she says. “To be able to talk to someone who speaks their language, understands the unique environment in which they operate, and can listen to what they are wanting to achieve with their on-farm connectivity requirements makes the decision process so much easier.”

INDUSTRY NEWS Fertiliser usage is expected to increase, according to Rabobank
Price queries Australian farmers will benefit from low fertiliser prices, but Rabobank says there are big questions to be asked before replenishing stocks In its Semi-Annual Fertiliser Outlook, Rabobank said its models indicated a three per cent recovery in global fertiliser usage in 2023, following a seven per cent drop in 2022 after years of volatility and record high prices. Report co-author, RaboResearch farm inputs analyst Vitor Pistoia, says an initial analysis suggests a close to five per cent increase in global fertiliser use for 2024, with nitrogen usage growing two per cent, phosphate 3.9 per cent and potash five per cent. He adds that any negative impact the Israel-Hamas conflict will have on fertiliser prices will be manageable. “However, if the conflicts spreads to the broader Middle East/North African region, impacts on fertiliser supply – as well as grain, meat, and dairy demand – could be notable,” he says.
The report notes Israel is an important exporter of potash and phosphorus – in 2022 exporting six per cent of the world’s potash and eight per cent of its phosphate fertilisers. For Australia Pistoia said that while fertiliser prices had come down “massively” since mid-2022 and farm cash flow was reasonable, there were still major question marks to address before farmers started filling their sheds up with fertiliser again. “Firstly, how will this season end? Undoubtedly, some regions of the eastern states will reduce application rates due to the current dry seasonal conditions, as well as pockets in Western Australia are also experiencing dryness,” he says. “Increased fertiliser demand might come from South Australia, Victoria and
southern New South Wales, which have fair to good crop conditions.” Pistoia added that the other major question was about how much a recent drop in the Australian dollar would offset the reduced cost of fertiliser in farmers’ budgets. “When this is combined with the recent crude oil hikes, how much is left in those budgets to increase fertiliser application rates?,” he says. On the upside, the Rabobank analyst says, “besides lower global fertiliser prices, we have many commodities that have firm to good price levels – especially from an Australian perspective”. “The 2022 season saw a drop of 30 per cent for phosphate fertiliser application, and 31 per cent fall of potash usage in Australia – due to high fertiliser prices and international logistics challenges,” he says. “The application of these two nutrients should bounce back for the 2023 season and especially for the coming 2024 season, as fertilisers should be more affordable and the soil needs it to balance the nutrient extraction of the recent good yields.”

Next year is going to be the year of the Hercules. Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales is significantly expanding its Hercules range, with a huge new selection of loaders, graders, dozers and a telehandler becoming available in 2024 Words Cat Fitzpatrick With the new year on the horizon, it’s time for a whole new suite of machinery to join the Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales (BMES) range. Fans of the Hercules loader range will not only be getting access to a suite of new graders, dozers and a telehandler – the Hercules loader range itself will be
12

upgraded and expanded with a set of 10 new models. The BMES phones were understandably ringing off the hook when Farms & Farm Machinery spoke with sales executive Steven Ragenovich about the exciting growth being seen by the Yatala-based machinery group.
“We’ve just gone up four or five notches,” Ragenovich says. “These are going to give the people on the land a greater range of loaders, graders, telehandlers and dozers that suit their budgets and are backed up by the Australia-wide aftersales service we are known for.”
The next evolution The current range of Hercules wheel loaders will be getting a refresh with two different series in 2024 – the Hercules Series 2 and Hercules Loadmaster – which will mean a total of eight new loaders becoming available soon. “The Series 2 models – the H700-2, H850-2, H1050-2, and the H1250-2 – are an upgrade of the previous H Series machines, which have been doing really well in the agricultural sector across Australia,” Ragenovich says. “We’re always listening to our customers and frequently improving our machines. All the Hercules loader ranges are premium builds and will have the same complete parts support we are known for as the new range makes its way into the country. “We invest a lot of time and money into our parts supply and parts interpretation, with two qualified parts interpreters on hand.” The Series 2 Hercules models will give BMES customers a greater choice, he adds, starting at a seven-tonne operating weight with a 100 horsepower (75kW) engine and going up to a 25-tonne operating weight with a 275hp (205kW) engine in the HD series. “The Series 2 models have many new design changes, with new engine cowl-
ings and an enhanced systems display with more information for the operator and numerous other advancements,” Ragenovich says. “The Loadmaster range of loaders – the HLM70, HLM85, HLM105 and HLM125 – which will have operating weights from seven tonnes to 12 tonnes will be arriving in the new year. “These have been designed for farmers looking for a budget option, but who still want a reliable machine.” Two additional loader models will also be joining the BMES Hercules range, under the series name Hercules Max. These have been designed for budget-conscious
buyers and will come in two models, the 12-tonne HRM120 and 18-tonne HRM856. “The Hercules Max was born out of a need for a larger loader alternative to our HD series loaders, at a reduced price without compromise in quality,” Ragenovich says. Beyond loaders With the Hercules loaders being so popular with farmers, BMES has now decided to offer its customers a variety of graders and dozers as well as a telehandler. BMES has been introducing the Hercules graders to its loader clients and it has A Hercules HD 668 wheel loader, left, and a H850-2 loader

already sold several to existing customers. There are two models available – the HG915 and HG140 – which have a 15 tonne and 18 tonne operating weight respectively, pending options. The smaller HG915 comes with a 12foot (3.65m) blade, while the HG140 has a 14-foot (4.26m) blade, and both have hydraulic rear rippers with optional front blades and scarifiers. Bush guards are also available. Both graders will be on show at Beef 2024, taking place in Rockhampton in May. In addition to the graders, two new Hercules dozers will be on offer, with a variety of options, including rear rippers, four types of blade and optional bush guards. Weighing in at 24 tonnes and 30 tonnes, pending options, and boasting
hydrostatic drives, these dozers will also be introduced at Beef 2024. Finally, the Hercules 838 telehandler will come in at an operating weight of eight tonnes and the ability to lift three tonnes, plus a maximum 8m reach. “So many of our customers asked us to produce a quality low-cost telehandler to get the job done without the fanfare, so we are thrilled to be offering the H838 from the new year,” Ragenovich says. “It’s going to be a great addition to our line-up.” Customer support Building long-term relationships with customers has been the key to BMES’ success over the past 30 years, Ragenovich says, with the new offering being driven by customer demand for high quality, affordable and hard-wearing machinery.
“A key thing is the high level of aftersales support that we offer as well,” Ragenovich says. “We now employ 20 full-time personnel and have in-field technical support from our technicians, so you’re never forgotten once you’re a customer of Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales. “We have new customers ringing us daily, having heard of us through word of mouth. With our continued expansion of the Hercules loader ranges, more and more people across Australia are becoming familiar with what we can offer. “Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales is your one-stop shop. It’s going to be the year of the Hercules, so bring on 2024!” Brisbane Mini Excavator Sales is located at 28 Old Pacific Highway, Yatala, and the full range can be viewed online at www.brisbaneminiexcavators.com.au

INDUSTRY NEWS
Data base Partnerships are being sought to help turn a locally developed app into the ultimate artificial intelligence-powered resource for Australian farmers A new app developed in New South Wales is seeking to partner with industry as it endeavours to become the ChatGPT of Australian agriculture. The Yarta.ai app aims to provide an artificial intelligence-powered consultant to farmers and give instant access to a wealth of advice and expert knowledge. It has been developed by Les Finemore, a research scientist and commodity trader who grew up on a cattle farm near Wagga Wagga, and the app uses similar large language model (LLM) technology to the popular ChatGPT platform. “We use our own proprietary LLM and have curated the content to be highly bespoke to Aussie growers,” Finemore says. “There’s so much great research being done in agriculture, but farmers either don’t have time to read through studies or they don’t even know they exist. “Whether it’s a grain farmer looking for agronomy advice or a commodity trader looking for the latest production forecasts, Yarta uses the power of artificial
intelligence to provide instant answers to questions which may have taken several days in the past.” The next step for Yarta is partnering with agribusinesses and industry experts, which it is pursuing through AgriFutures Grow. Finemore says this opportunity is open to agribusinesses that could benefit from sharing information directly with farmers, along with Australian agricultural sectors interested in a centralised research, data and advice hub. The benefit of using Yarta over existing platforms such as ChatGPT or search engines, according to Finemore, is the bespoke and specialised nature of the app for Australian agriculture. “Our background in the industry allows us to curate the niche content that farmers need,” he says. “In the past I’d need to Google something, look around for a trustworthy source, sift through content that’s optimised to show me ads and often end up
Yarta founder Les Finemore
needing to ask a consultant anyway. “That process can take hours, affecting farmers’ productivity and bottom line. “We’re aiming to give farmers more time and more resources to upskill. “It’s got the same conversational interface as ChatGPT, so you can start with a broad question and then dive down into the specifics if you like. “You can say ‘what are good chemicals to use for this purpose?’, then ask more about a specific product, get the label information, application rate, safety information – all in a few seconds in one platform. “We’re giving quick answers to farmers from trusted sources from people in the industry.” Yarta.ai is available through the web and iOS.
The Agribio building at La Trobe University
Best in glass New multi-million dollar facilities at Melbourne’s La Trobe University will be used to expand agriculture and food security research Victorian researchers now have access to new glasshouses at La Trobe University, which are planned to accelerate the development of new food security solutions. The facilities at La Trobe’s Agribio research centre in Bundoora – which
16
Farms & Farm Machinery
officially opened last month - will be used to optimise management and breeding of crops, boost early disease detection and use data to improve yield, quality and plant health. The greenhouses will also support research scientists to develop medicinal agriculture innovations, drought resistant plants and crops that need fewer pesticides and will use a high-tech visual apparatus to detect and link plants’ physical characteristics with genes. It is anticipated these technologies will allow breeders to more quickly identify the traits needed to increase yield and quality, with these benefits flowing on to the agricultural sector. La Trobe received $10 million under the Victorian Government’s Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund (VHESIF) to increase its agricultural and food research capacity. This has allowed for the refurbishment and expansion of glasshouses with new growth facilities and controlled environment pods, along with infrastructure for research equipment including an imaging mass spectrometer.
La Trobe vice-chancellor John Dewar says the investment will enhance the university’s food and agriculture research capability at a time when food security is becoming more important. “This investment by the Victorian government will support the important work La Trobe’s researchers are doing to improve food security not just in Australia, but globally,” he says. “Our AgriBio facility conducts worldclass bioscience research aimed at improving productivity and sustainability, fighting disease, reducing environmental impacts and supporting agricultural education.” The facility will ultimately support farmers across a range of horticultural and medicinal crops, La Trobe says, with one example of the glasshouse’s use to be in studying optimisation of tomato plants to help deliver better quality and higher yielding crops. The glasshouse facility contains compartments which are equipped with the latest imaging systems and mounted on the largest XYZ system in the Asia-Pacific region, La Trobe adds.

PARTS AND MAINTENANCE
Moving ahead A new app which is described as Uber for farm materials management has been launched Farmers and contractors have a new method of managing both their import and export processes. Australian-run app Fill Up Today was launched earlier this month and promises to act like Uber for transportation of farm materials such as grain. The app aims to give farmers and contractors access to a complete network at their fingertips, enabling them to easily organise material movement without the need to spend hours on the phone cold calling potential drivers. Fill Up Today product manager Daniel Strahle says the main benefit from a farmer’s perspective relates to materials management and ease of access. “To simplify it, coming into grain season a farmer can list the quantity of grain that they’ve got to export and that will open it up to any driver on the platform,” he says.
18
Farms & Farm Machinery
“It deals with your cost control and management and opens it up to an entire network of drivers and their availability. “There is also really no limit on what the material is – anything from grain to fertiliser - provided it fits into a tipper.” Fill Up Today is a multi-faceted platform designed to benefit not only farmers but owner drivers and transport companies. These companies can set up an account and the app promises to help operations leaders in the day-to-day allocation of their fleet. Jobs can be easily assigned to registered drivers, who then use the app for inbuilt navigation. Geofence tracking provides clear and concise reporting, while company users can also specify their requirements for importing and exporting materials to ensure the end user is aware.
In the same way that Uber and other rideshare apps operate, drivers can register with the Fill Up Today platform and are rated at the end of each job. This allows farmers to see the quality of drivers available while also helping with their cost control. Owner drivers can also assign themselves to ongoing jobs through the app, helping to ensure a constant workflow. Fill Up Today’s onboarding process requires licence verification, proof of vehicle registration and insurance, plus a daily prestart compliance check to ensure it remains in line with industry standards. The app has also been designed for ease of both setup and ongoing use, all to ensure potential users are not deterred by complicated systems.
Fill Up Today is designed to function like the popular Uber platform
“The biggest advantage is probably the ease of access,” Strahle says. “More than anything, just having that network in the palm of your hands can save hours on the phone and potentially getting knocked back. “A farmer can set up what they’ve got
to go out the next day, and avoid any annoyance by waking up in the morning knowing drivers have already assigned themselves to the job. “On top of that, it’s all Geofence tracked as well and provides live and accurate reporting of movements.”
Strahle says the aim is to continue the app’s organic growth and increase the network of users following its launch.
Fill Up Today is available through Google Play and the App Store.

BYPY Transmissions stocks a wide variety of safety covers
Safe and secure BYPY Transmissions has PTO shaft cover systems to help ensure on-farm safety is never compromised through poor maintenance The importance of safety on farms, while in a sense obvious, can also never be underestimated. Some tasks and machines carry an element of danger, and the idea of a simple option to significantly reduce the risk of serious harm has a lot of appeal. PTO shaft covers are one example of such a simple solution. Designed to protect the area where tractors and implements connect, the concept of a cover system might be “fairly basic” according to Ashley Male from BYPY Transmissions – but it can also be a potential lifesaver. It is also timely to consider the importance of adequately maintaining covers, as Male says workplace safety regulators such as WorkSafe have increased their focus on the area and have also introduced an advertising campaign around safety cover maintenance. “The message to get across is that WorkSafe is out there and they are

checking farms,” he says. “We want to make sure the farm is a safe place for people to operate without ending up injured, or worse.” BYPY Transmissions, which is based in Melbourne but distributes its products around Australia, does this by offering shaft covers for the entire Bondioli & Pavesi range in which it specialises. For such a simple part, BYPY’s offering is not only comprehensive – but designed to meet both Australian and overseas safety standards. “Our cover set systems are designed to meet European CE standards, which are some of the highest standards in the world,” Male says. “It’s not just the shaft covers we have, we also have external to the shaft safety covers, so it’s a covering system, not just a set of plastic covers on the shaft. “What we don’t have, if there is something special, we can generally get - unless it’s an OEM specified part that’s
supplied through the OEM network that we don’t have access to.” For covers to work effectively, BYPY says all rotating parts must be shielded and the covers must not rotate on the shaft. Proper use and maintenance of the driveline and shielding is of primary importance for operator safety, with a high percentage of driveline accidents occurring when safety shielding is missing or does not function properly. Users should also ensure the implement input connection shield is compatible with the driveline and the application. Damaged or missing components must be replaced with original equipment spare parts, correctly installed, before using the driveline. BYPY’s expertise can help customers with all of these factors, plus in determining whether their covers should be repaired or fully replaced when issues arise.
“Generally replacing is one of the quicker, easier and more convenient options, but depending on what’s broken there are certain components of the safety systems that are obtainable separately,” Male says. “More often than not, by the time they’ve become damaged to the point where they need servicing as such, replacing is probably a better option. “We can also help with identification. In this day and age of mobile phones, I’ve had plenty of messages where it’s just people sending me photos and we help identify what is needed. “We’re here to support the customer in identifying what they’ve got, what they need, and how soon we can get it to them.” Male says most of the shafts are rotating at either 540rpm or 1,000rpm while operating, which means accidents caused by not replacing broken safety covers can lead to catastrophic scenarios such as personal injury, maiming or even death. “People have lost limbs, people have lost lives, people have been scalped. It’s that simple, and it does happen unfortunately,” he says. “Safety covers should be kept up not just for WorkSafe purposes, but also for the peace of mind of the operators, plus
for owners of the equipment knowing that contractors or employees using the equipment are safe. “You don’t want to come across as OH&S aficionados, but it is something that does need to be focused on because the consequences are pretty dire.
“It’s a fairly basic subject, but it’s a subject that does need to be emphasised.” BYPY Transmissions is located at 16 Dingley Avenue, Dandenong and its full range of safety covers can be viewed at www.bypy.com.au

TamaWrap+ is carefully designed to meet performance standards and customer needs
Wrapped up Through constant development of its TamaWrap+ product, and increasing charity involvement, Tama is becoming further embedded into the Australian community In 2009, the result of many years of extensive global research and development started to spread a little ‘yellow’ light on the cottonfields of Australia, Brazil and the United States. Forging a relationship with John Deere meant Tama could understand the inner mechanics of its picker and stripper systems intimately, with its TamaWrap+ wraps revolutionising the way cotton could be harvested and transported to gins. It has provided the company with the ability to develop a special formulation of film to meet the demanding requirements of cotton baling. In turn, this has created increasing cost and time efficiencies for producers, gins and transporters, reduced contamina-

tion risks and led the way in innovation for years to come. “The focus on plastic contamination is an ever-evolving space with USA standards setting the benchmark,” Tama Australia’s cotton commercial manager Simon Long says. “With low-quality, low-cost products entering the market, USDA and America’s National Cotton Council have developed a minimum performance standard to ensure plastic contamination is not increased. “To date, TamaWrap+ is the only product that meet this standard.” Research and development continue for Tama each year and is conducted globally, including in Australia.
“Australian cotton growers play a huge role in the R&D trials we conduct each year,” Long says. “We are always looking for ways to improve efficiencies and prioritise contamination reduction and it’s only thanks to the support we get in countries that these can continue.” Contamination is not the only thing driving Tama’s evolution of the cotton space. A continued and dedicated effort to sustainability is obvious through the core collection program as well as the use of recycled materials throughout product lines. Acting as a unique view to sustainability, the core collection program provides further manufacturing efficiencies for Tama with a reduced carbon footprint at their manufacturing plants, as well as reducing the raw material usage needed to manufacture the cores. For as long as cotton is produced in Australia, Tama has every intention of continuing to evolve and support the industry. This is shown through Tama’s involvement with prominent Australian charities that the company feels have a strong connection with its customer base. “We’ve partnered with McGrath Foundation for the last few years, donating over $224,000 to support breast care nurses in Australia,” Long says. “We know a lot of our customers who have had a personal requirement for a
breast care nurse so it’s nice to know we’re giving back as much as we can. “This year is also our first year supporting the mental health of our customers by partnering with Beyond Blue.
“We know how tough our customers have it and once again we do what we can to give back and provide support in more ways that just product and service. “These customers aren’t just customers,
they’ve supported Tama for a long time and we consider them part of the Tama family.” Tama Australia’s full range can be viewed at www.tama-australia.com.au

FOR THE FARMER
Little master The Power Claw is a core part of Rata Equipment’s range – and the compact model has been redesigned to suit its customer base
The Power Claw can help with a variety of farm tasks
New Zealand manufacturer Rata Equipment has continued the development of a core product, making changes to further boost its compact Power Claw’s efficiency. The Power Claw is designed to be an all-rounder on farms, thanks to its ability to lift hay bales and remove debris such as rocks, logs and tree roots. It is available in three models – the compact, mid-range and standard – which are designed to suit different sizes of tractors along with other machines such as skid steers. It is Rata’s compact model, which is suited to small tractors between 25hp and 45hp, that has received recent attention from the manufacturer in terms of a redesign. Rata’s marketing and sales director Glenn Walton says the redesign has made
the compact Power Claw more efficient to build, as well as becoming a better product for smaller farm machines. “It’s got a new design back frame, which is all folded plate,” he says. “The hoses and everything are right inside the frame and very well protected from any branches or anything coming through. “The frame is very compact and designed especially for the protection of the machine and for the hydraulic hoses.” Rata’s compact Power Claw measures 1.35m wide, features an opening width of 90cm and weighs 140kg. The tines are made from 10mm AR450 grade high tensile steel to ensure maximum strength and durability. Walton says the Rata team has put the new machine through rigorous testing to
try and find weaknesses – but are happy to have failed in that mission. “We’ve actually tried pretty hard to find the weak spots, but we haven’t found any on this machine,” he says. “We’ve really given it a good old workout, ripping out trees and weeds, branches, lifting concrete and various different things – obviously within the capabilities of the machine – and we haven’t been able to bend it.” The tasks Walton outlines are right in the compact Power Claw’s wheelhouse, highlighting the versatility it offers Australian farmers. “We’ve been breaking up some branches that have been sitting in long grass,” he says. “It’s got a decent width to grab, and also it gets it right out of the way too for when

you’re going into a tree line or a fence or something like that and want to pick up something quite close to that. “We’ve been doing work with it spreading out mulch. It’s great for that. “After you’ve done the arborist work with the trees and chipped the branches, you can spread all of that out and take all the rake work out of it.” Other features of the compact Power Claw include grips on the irons, which help to hold on to slippery logs, while Walton says the machine’s versatility is further enhanced by the ability to be put on to “virtually any type of quick hitch”. Ease of use has also been considered in the design, with the compact Power Claw providing excellent visibility to the working area which is particularly helpful for users operating in tight spaces. Another design feature is that the top part of the Power Claw comes down and interlocks with the bottom tines.
“That means you can grab onto a small bush or weed that is in the way that you want to move,” Walton says. “You can really clamp up small things with them, right down to being able to pick up one stick off the ground.” Walton believes the compact Power Claw is a great investment for farmers with a small tractor or skid steer and wanting an attachment to help get maintenance completed quickly. “We think this is a really great little tool to complement any small machine to speed up operation and do work that you couldn’t otherwise get done in a day,” he says. “It makes fast work of any of that hard work.” Rata’s wider Power Claw range includes

English made and with almost 120 years of history, Bomford machinery buyers can be confident they are getting a high-quality product In the famous hymn and the country’s unofficial national anthem Jerusalem, England is described as a green and pleasant land. For a country renowned for rolling
28

hills and pastures, it is only natural that England would produce high quality products to cut and maintain them. Due to celebrate its 120th anniversary as a company next year, Bomford has
long been producing heavy-duty rotary cutters designed for these open spaces and larger scale commercial applications. Available locally through Ag-Pride Australia, two models of fold wing Bomford
cutters stand out in the local setting. The TW4600 and TW6000 are both tri-wing rotary cutters with 4.6m and 6m cutting widths respectively. These units particularly suit contractors and bigger pastoralists, Ag-Pride Australia’s product manager Lance Hills says. Designed for farm and airfield tasks such as grass and regrowth cutting, pasture topping, vegetation management and maintaining fire breaks, both models offer the same features and benefits with size being the only difference. Far from being a company resting on its laurels, Bomford has recently made some updates to the cutters to further increase their desirability and ease of use. “Bomford has just gone for a little design change, it’s a bit of a different look, but they’ve certainly made some good changes to the machines,” Hills says. “They have changed the body design slightly to increase the machine’s ability to eject the grass and reduce clogging. “They have a different style of blade base on them with the three blades, so they tend to refine a little bit more in their cutting.
“It’s what they call a dome anti scalp base. That dish on the bottom is quite a heavy dish and it’s designed to get the blades off the ground and eliminate contact with any unforeseen object.” Another area Bomford has looked to improve on the TW4600 and TW6000 is in the suspension, with Hills describing the updated system as “unique”. “They have gone away from the springs and gone to pneumatic suspension,” he says. “It means less moving parts and its accumulator is in the hydraulic lines, so basically you’re using the hydraulic system as a giant shock absorber.” Bomford also offers many other features which are consistent across both rotary cutter models. These include deck protection rings, centre deck suspension system, hydraulic level lift, hydraulic wing deck lift and front and rear safety chain kits. Both the wing deck skid shoes and centre deck front skids are replaceable, while the wide-angle PTO CV drive shaft allows for tighter turning and features an over run clutch.
Heavy duty design is at the forefront of Bomford products, thanks to its sturdy gearboxes, PTO shafts and drawbar with ring pull hitch. The rotary cutters are complete with pneumatic 10-ply ribbed implement tyres, powder coated finish and transport locking bars. “The quality of build is certainly without question,” Hills says. “Bomford uses good, high-quality components, and the high blade tip speeds with the three blade bases certainly aids in the machine’s ability to cut and minimise windrowing very well.” Bomford’s Australian range also includes a variety of reach-arm flail mowers and attachments such as rotary cutting heads, Pro-Saw circular saws and Sheartrim cutter bars. Ag-Pride Australia is based at 23 Galleghan Street in Hexham, New South Wales, and has been the local distributor of Bomford products since 2015. Using Dieci’s Poultry Pro has allowed Hazeldenes to easily load its trucks
Chicken run Victorian poultry producer Hazeldenes credits its Dieci Poultry Pro telehandlers for increasing both operator comfort and productivity As one of Victoria’s largest poultry producers, Hazeldenes needs machines that can be relied upon while meeting the unique challenges its workers face on a day-to-day basis. For the Bendigo-based producer, the answer was a fleet of Poultry Pro telehandlers from its nearest Dieci dealership Farm & Diesel. Space is not an issue for many agricultural sectors, particularly broadacre farming where many thousands of hectares of open expanse are available for machinery to work without obstacles. The poultry industry is unlike most others though, with much of its work occurring inside sheds – and often requiring lower heights than other farming types. The telehandler, by definition, is a machine to lift items – so the concept of the unit itself being too high might seem like a contradiction at first thought. Dieci has recognised this as a genuine issue, hence why the industry-specific Poultry Pro telehandler forms part of the manufacturer’s range.
“Dieci Australia are also the only ones on the market that make a Poultry Pro specifically for the industry,” Farm & Diesel founder and managing director Sam Walker says. “That’s how we keep getting return customers, because Dieci specialises in their application.” One of these return customers is Hazeldenes, which has been running a fleet of Poultry Pro telehandlers for the last four years and plans to keep it that way. Hazeldenes farm manager Steve Balcke says the Poultry Pro has enabled access to spaces which other telehandlers could not reach. “The access in the shed is the biggest thing,” he says. “A lot of bigger machinery you can’t get into the sheds, because you’ve got restrictions with feeders and drinkers at basically 2m, whereas this machine fits in underneath all that. “We had one machine where we put low profile tyres on it to give us an extra 100mm of clearance and we can go in any
of our sheds to clean out. “With the Poultry Pro, we have the ability of a top-grade machine that fits our needs.” Unique features of the Italian-manufactured Poultry Pro, when compared to other telehandlers, include smaller wheels and a low cabin height, both of which help operators navigate more efficiently and allow the machine to fit into sheds and under gantries that are typically used for feeding. The Poultry Pro is capable of handling loads of up to three tonnes, has a maximum lifting height of 6.35m, can produce up to 98hp (73.4kW) in power and reach speeds of 35km/h. By running the specialised Poultry Pro rather than a small but generalised telehandler, Hazeldenes are also able to ensure its operators are working with the maximum levels of comfort possible – and doing so in a machine which maximises productivity. “A big thing is that we’re able to run a full cab,” Balcke says.

“The driver and operators have got all the creature comforts, which we didn’t always have with other brands, because we had to compromise to fit in the shed, whereas we don’t have to now with Dieci’s Poultry Pro. “There’s no dust, so their working environment is far better both health and safety wise, and comfort wise. “Because we can run the bigger machines we can run the appropriate bucket - a 2.5m or 3m bucket which makes the job quicker.” The Poultry Pro is a versatile unit, and its big bucket size allows Hazeldenes to work quickly when trucks need loading and time is of the essence. “We can load B-doubles straight out of the shed, so it allows us to load those bigger trucks easily with the health and safety that’s paramount in this world,” Balcke says. “We’ve got that aspect well and truly covered and we can load anyone that turns up from a 6x4 trailer through to

a B-double, and we can get that done in good time.” The body of evidence to show Hazeldenes’ happiness with the Dieci Poultry Pro telehandlers is a sizeable one, but one area which should not be overlooked is the customer experience. Like the machine experience itself, Dieci dealership Farm & Diesel has passed the test with flying colours. “The service we’ve got out of Farm & Diesel is A1,” Balcke says. “The after sales service is fantastic. They’ve got mechanics on call - not that we’ve had any problems - but we have that backup knowing they’re there if we need them. “They were happy to work with us and modify a machine by putting the low profile tyres on, and their willingness to help out with that was great.” Farm & Diesel’s head office is located at 239-245 Midland Highway, Epsom and its website is www.farmanddiesel.com.au. PRODUCT REVIEW
Rock solid Words and images Mark Fouhy As technology continues to evolve, one of the key benefits is helping reduce tedious, repetitive, and backbreaking chores such as trying to clear the land of stones to ensure more usable land and minimise damage to cultivation and harvesting equipment. Mark Fouhy takes a closer look at the Elho Scorpio stone picker, designed and manufactured in Finland and distributed in Australia through Colac Ag. While my personal experience with stone picking is (thankfully) limited, I did spend some time wandering the fields of Ireland while on an OE farming and contracting. This involved a tractor with a rock fork on the front, collecting rocks to prevent damage to cultivation, combine or forage harvesting equipment. Land prices are only going one way, as there’s only so much land in the world and an ever-growing population. Producing enough to feed the masses is becoming more of a challenge.
34
Farms & Farm Machinery
Although flat land is the most desirable when it comes to growing crops and produce, there are different classes of flat land and potential uses. Maximising available land isn’t always straightforward but one machine playing a key role in this is the Elho stone picker. Built to withstand demanding conditions, the Elho stone picker helps effectively reclaim valuable acreage and create a clean and productive environment for farming operations. Aside from crop yields, other benefits
include less wear and tear on cultivation equipment and preventing damage to mowers and other harvesting equipment, as even with heavy rolling there will still be some rocks that don’t cooperate and like to cause trouble. Operation Ease of operation and precision engineering are two key reasons Elho Scorpio pickers are market leaders. Other pickers in the past have been PTO driven, resulting in extra maintenance, greasing,

etc. However, Elho machines are fully hydraulic-driven, eliminating the need to worry about breaking shear bolts. Utilising two hydraulic circuits, one at 110 bar and the second at 150 bar, the hydraulics automatically lift the picker if it does hit something too big or jams up. If it does happen to jam, there’s a hydraulic reverser function. Full operation requires one single operating valve and another three double-acting valves to control all the functions of the picker. Maximum working depth is up to seven centimetres, and depth adjustment is through the wheels mounted on each of the rotating picking wings. The main body of the machine has hydraulic ram adjustment on the drawbar. At the outer point of each wing, there’s
up to 700kg of lifting force to shift rocks from 25mm up to 400mm. The Hardox 500 used in the tines allows the machine to operate faster (125rpm for tines) than traditional spring steel tines. This higher rotation speed helps improve sieving and soil removal when picking and breaks up organic matter better. The bars of the hopper are the limiting factor in terms of what size rocks you can collect. Screen bars that can be fitted include 30/40/100/110mm to suit various requirements. The 1.8-metre diameter picker arms are bolted with rubber torsion bushes, used on a lot of cultivation equipment now, to help protect the arms from damage. The arms have weld-on tips for easy replacement when they get worn. Repairs and maintenance can be

carried out safely within the picker, with stoppers to prevent the bin from accidentally falling. Although we had a McCormick X8 hooked up in front, this was a little bit of overkill in terms of the power required to run the Elho machine, as remarkably, it only needs 75 to 140kW and a hydraulic pump size of 110 litres per minute as a minimum. With a maximum hydraulic flow rate required of 85 litres per minute, flow rate was turned way down on the tractor. The benefit of the larger tractor comes in pulling a full hopper load of rock, which can be between 1.5 to 2 cubic metres, depending upon the size of rocks picked. The tandem axle running on a bogie system with 560/60R 22.5 tyres handles the weight of the 6.8-tonne empty machine and the loaded machine, preventing it from sinking into the paddock or making it unnecessarily hard to pull. Once fully loaded, the rocks will start being flicked back out of the hopper. Once the picker has stopped, you can back up to a trailer or truck to dump the hopper load of rocks. With a maximum dumping height of 2.7 metres, I’d estimate the process would take between one to two minutes, so depending on the paddock, you may need a trailer or two to keep up. Automatic depth adjustment enables the machine to follow the surface of the ground with constant working pressure. This makes it easy to operate the machine even in extremely dusty conditions. Working conditions The conditions you’re operating in will determine how fast you cover the ground. Forward speed can be anywhere from one to seven kilometres per hour (on our test day we were picking at around 1.5km/ hour). Soil conditions are also a factor. Ideal conditions are either a frosty morning or hot and dry, allowing rocks to be collected with the least amount of soil. The other factor is, of course, the number of rocks on the paddock and the size of them. Larger rocks will fill up the collection hopper faster and a greater quantity of rocks will fill the hopper quicker than a less rocky paddock, requiring more time spent unloading.

Summary My thoughts on stone picking are that it’s a hard, dirty job that nobody loves doing. However, with the Elho Scorpio 550, the unwelcome task has been made easy. Extremely robust and well-built, with hydraulic drives, gives a reliable and efficient machine to get the job done. While like most machinery, it represents
a sizeable investment (although not in comparison to land prices), it would suit a large farm operation, a group of farmers, or as an additional service for a contractor. Elho products are distributed in Australia through Colac Ag, and can be viewed at www.elhoaustralia.com.au

The Claas Disco 9700 series at work
Broad boosts Claas has been busy bolstering its product line, now offering a new mower, combine harvester and wheel loader to Australian customers Claas has significantly expanded its Australian product offering by introducing the Disco 9700 mower and three models of Torion wheel loader. These additions are alongside significant upgrades to its popular Lexion combine harvesters that arrived in time for the 2023 harvest season, enabling it to boast increased engine power, larger grain tank volume and a new cabin.

Disco 9700 While it may be the smallest of the machines that make up Claas’ product range, the Disco 9700 triple-combination mower combines many tried-and-tested elements of other Claas mowers with one significant addition. “It’s the first Claas triple mower with roller conditioner in the combination with belts,” Claas Harvest Centre product manager Daniel Cornelius says. Comprising five different models, the new Disco 9700 series slots in between the Disco 9200/9300 and Disco 1100 in the manufacturer’s mower line-up. It starts with the Disco 9700 Comfort before moving to the 9700 C Business (fitted with a tine conditioner), the 9700 RC Business (with a roller conditioner),
9700 C Auto Swather (featuring a tine conditioner and swath grouping) and 9700 RC Auto Swather (with a roller conditioner and swath grouping). Cornelius says Claas has aimed for maximum versatility by providing these options, with each model appealing to
different customer requirements. “If you just want to mow and lay the material, then you would probably buy a machine with or without conditioner. “If you’re a contractor that needs the flexibility to make one swath driving in front of the chopper and get material cut and

gathered together for straight chopping, then you have the option of belts. “If you are focusing more on hay then you do not want one big swath, but instead you want three narrow swaths for better drying. “In the end it depends on what the customers need, but the bigger the contractors are getting, the more we are seeing the belts there just to have the flexibility.” One major area of improvement in the Disco 9700 is the inclusion of swinging arms which can be hydraulically pivoted outwards by 30cm and inwards by 5cm. Cornelius says this allows the working width to be adjusted on-the-go by up to 70cm – between 8.8m and 9.5m - a step above the previous models which were rigid mounted and could not have the overlap changed. “The driver can choose between maximum overlap on headlands to avoid strips or maximum working width on straight lines,” he says. “This feature makes the 9700 ideal for mowing irregularly-shaped or undulating fields, or anything in between that is desired, where a higher degree of flexibility is required to maintain cutting quality

and protect the pasture.” The first Disco 9700 arrived in Australia mid-year, a pre-series machine for evaluation purposes that also formed part of the Claas’ factory’s first ever batch. Field demonstrations have shown Cornelius how significant this working width increase will be in boosting productivity. “A quick calculation: we may have an average speed for example of 10 km/h for easy calculation. If we increase the working width by half a metre, we quickly achieve half a hectare more capacity per hour, just due to the reduction of the overlap. “When you cover half a hectare per hour more, then imagine how many hours you’re working, you’re just getting way more capacity out of the machine.” The Disco 9700 also includes Claas’ tried-and-tested Max Cut mower beds and hydraulic Active Float mower suspension technology, ensuring features which had made previous mowers successful have been retained. Torion loaders Claas also announced that three of the
11 models in its Torion agricultural wheel loader range will become available in the Australian market. Wheel loaders, which Claas manufactures in partnership with Liebherr, were not previously available in Australia despite being part of Claas’ global offering since 2018. The locally available models are the 1913, 1611 and 1611 P. “The 1913 has the extra power and lift capacity required for grain handling or filling large loader wagons, while the 1611 and 1611 P models are medium-sized machines that are more suitable for silage clamps and materials handling,” Claas Harvest Centre product manager Shane Barratt says. “These machines combine Liebherr’s lengthy experience in construction and materials handling and Claas’ expertise in powertrain management and the unique demands of agricultural environments. “The end result are high-performance machines that can efficiently, effortlessly and safely move materials across a range of distances and heights, often in constrained spaces,” he says. The 1913 has the heaviest overall weight
of the three machines, along with the greatest maximum tipping load and height. It weighs 18.5 tonnes overall, helping to provide optimum balance and stability, while the 1611 and 1611P weigh 15.8 tonnes and 15.2 tonnes respectively. In terms of maximum tipping load, the 1913 offers 12.5 tonnes, while the 1611 and 1611P can handle 9.4 tonne and 10.25 tonnes respectively. The 1913’s maximum tipping height is 4.15m, which can be extended to 4.7m with an optional high-lift mast. Both the 1611 and 1611P have a 3.98m maximum tipping height, which can become 4.52m with optional high-lift mast. All three models feature Liebherr’s ‘Z-kinematic’ system, which seamlessly jobs the lifting arms, hydraulic rams and pumps into a single operating system for smooth and efficient operation. Barratt says customers will enjoy powerful and intuitive operation, plus a comfortable user experience. “The 1611 and 1611P incorporate longer lifting arms, larger hydraulic rams and more powerful hydraulic pumps that significantly improve the lifting and holding power over the entire lifting range, allowing larger shovel volumes and heavier bale grabs,” he says. “The working hydraulics allow the mast to be controlled with great precision and safety, while the automated lifting height, bucket return, lowering depth and tipping/shaking functions ensure quick and
easy loading with minimal operator effort. “All models can be equipped with a weighing device with additional memory and back-weighing function. “The intuitive operating concept means even the most inexperienced operators become highly productive. “Inside, the spacious cabs provide 360-degree visibility and plenty of smart functions to reduce fatigue on long working days.” Lexion harvesters While not strictly a new machine in the same way as the Disco 9700 or Torion ranges are, customers will notice several significant upgrades to the Lexion 8000 and 7000 series combine harvesters. The upgrades apply to 2023 models of Lexion harvesters and are highlighted by even more power being added to the topof-the-range Lexion 8800. This model now boasts a 16.2L MAN D42 six-cylinder engine which produces a significant maximum output of 700hp. The other Lexion models - the 8700, 7700 and 7600 - retain the 12.5L six-cylinder Perkins 2206 D engines that deliver 571, 524 and 461hp respectively. All new Lexion harvesters include a larger cabin that offers larger windows for increased visibility, along with thinner A-pillars and a 360-degree wiper. Significant upgrades have also been made to the operation and machine optimisation systems. “The new 12-inch CEBIS terminal is a
high-resolution, high-contrast display that guarantees excellent readability under all lighting conditions and has three adjustable main display areas,” Claas Harvest Centre product manager Steve Reeves says. “CEBIS is intuitive, and operators can immediately find their way around the various functions and settings.” The CEMOS machine optimisation system has several new functions, including a dialog-based system which guides the operators through calibration to minimise grain loss. In terms of grain bin capacity, the 7000 Terra Trac models can be fitted with either 12,500 or 13,500 litre bins, while the 8000 Terra Trac models can have either 15,000 or 18,000 litre capacities. All engines are also fitted with Dynamic Cooling and Dynamic Power. “Dynamic Cooling is an on-demand variable drive cooling system that reduces power requirement by 26hp,” Reeves says. “The horizontal cooling system creates a ‘curtain’ that prevents dust from rising. “Dynamic Power is an advanced engine management system that automatically adjusts power output to field conditions for maximum fuel efficiency. “This system has been proven to deliver fuel savings of up to 10 per cent.” All Claas machines are available in Australia through Claas Harvest Centres, and the full range can be viewed at www.claasharvestcentre.com

Formal to floral One Victorian woman went from corporate life to reinventing the way we buy and sell flowers all around the world. Ilana Cohen reports Amidst the global pandemic, the need for an immersive and connective online platform for farmers and local businesses to reach out to their communities was stronger than ever, as supply chain issues compelled customers to rely on domestic providers of goods. This was particularly true for growers of cut flowers, among the many farmers who asked the question “how do we create something that is going to enable us to have flexibility based on [seasonal] availability?” That’s when one rural woman, ex-corporate office worker Nikki Davey, decided to nip the issue in the bud and Grown Not Flown was born. What is now an internationally recognised website and app originally started out as succession planning for the Davey family farm, born out of a COVID-19 passion project. On a blossoming property based in Glenmore in Central Victoria, Davey, along with her older sister, and partner, stumbled upon the problem of flexibility, which she jokes turned them into “accidental flower farmers.” What Grown Not Flown aims to master is the ‘slow flower movement.’ This means embracing the seasonal and local growth in a given area and supporting more sustainable and ethical practices.
42
Farms & Farm Machinery
“It’s really [about] celebrating the provenance of flowers the same way we do food,” Davey says. A big problem for this industry is that Australia heavily relies on imported cut flowers. According to the Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook 2021/22 published by Hort Innovation, nearly one-third of cut flowers are imported from overseas. In 2022 alone, Australia imported $104.6 million worth of cut flowers, a $30 million increase from 2020. Furthermore, upon arrival, before sellers obtain the flowers, they are subject to Australia’s strict biosecurity rules, including, Davey says, “being dipped in some really harsh chemicals.” The Grown Not Flown co-owner has created an innovative and fresh approach to solve this problem, which saw her named this year’s AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award National winner. Using her 15 years of experience in business management and product development, Davey has helped expand the organisation to what it is today, Not only does the digital start-up platform serve as an online directory for consumers to connect to their local flower farmers, it eliminates the unsustainable and costly methods of bringing in cut flowers Down Under. Not to mention, supporting local growers promotes the idea that certain flowers

are seasonal and introduces goods to consumers that they might not have known. The Rural Women’s Award winner was celebrated at Parliament House in Canberra in early spring, receiving not only a $15,000 grant for being the Victorian state winner, but an additional $20,000 prize from Westpac, the award sponsor, for being the national winner. This grand total of $35,000 is extremely beneficial to small but quickly emerging leaders in the field. With these funds, Grown Not Flown has been able to set up online master classes, to launch a podcast, and allow transactions to be made through the platform. It will also allow Davey and her team to open their gates beyond just flowers, to soon market local produce as well. This way, growers will have the opportunity to diversify their income by not having to stick to just one product, while continuing to spread the good word of buying locally and sustainably. Grown Not Flown also helps growers avoid the hardships of marketing their own products, Davey says. “One of our main goals at Grown Not Flown is to remove the need for those micro and small scale growers to have to build and manage their own websites, because it takes a huge amount of effort, it costs a lot of money, and a lot of the time, people are growing seasonally,” she says. While the idea of buying local may seem
small in scale, the word has spread far and wide. Grown Not Flown now operates in 37 countries, has over 1,200 flower farms listed on its global directory map, and has over 6,500 users worldwide. “We created what we wished was available when we first started flower farming,” Davey says. “That was to have borderless communities to have an easy way to be able to connect with consumers, and also other growers. “It was the first aggregated view of flower farmers both within Australia and globally as well, and if we’re going to build it for ourselves, why not build it for everybody?” Most importantly, it’s accessible and free for flower farmers to sign up and create a profile to put themselves on the map. Once you join, be on the lookout for truffles and king proteas from the Duck Duck Pig farm, the home of Grown Not Flown’s creators. Grown Not Flown is accessible online at www.grown-not-flown.com

Keep farmers farming Farmers nationwide are pushing for land, water, workers and the protection of a long-established industry. Trevor Whittington calls on the government to pay attention November 17 marked National Agriculture Day – which should be all about celebrating all things agriculture. Instead, the National Farmers Federation was forced to use the day to ramp up its new national campaign against government anti-farming policies. The new campaign, Keep Farmers Farming, takes aim at the incessive creep of government policies that make it harder or outright impossible for farmers to keep farming. These include policies such as the proposed ban of live sheep exports to the Middle East, water buybacks, the scrapping of the ag visa, the relentless restrictions on irrigated agriculture and new heritage and environmental laws which cancel farmers’ rights to access their own land. On the first point at least, WA’s state minister for agriculture, Jackie Jarvis, has been busy listening and acting. First, we had her round table on the dry conditions in the state and what can be done to help, then she came out on the ABC’s Country Hour backing the industry’s call to crank up the live sheep trade by moving more sheep onto boats or into processing. Last week the Minister followed through with our suggestion to commission an economic analysis of industry options to better manage drought. In the meantime, her federal counterpart, Senator Murray Watt, continues to show he has a tin ear for industry problems. Watt has shown no interest in coming over to look at the dry conditions in WA, no interest in getting on a plane and finding new markets for mutton or attracting more ships and planes to WA.
44
Farms & Farm Machinery
In fact, the only thing he has done is commission a report that confirms his conviction that the Federal government’s policy decision to end the live sheep trade is not impacting saleyard prices. One minister is on board with us, at least trying to find solutions, while the other and his department of faceless bureaucrats are looking the other way as the industry continues to sink. The new National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke summed up the reason for the campaign with his comments. “They’re taking away the water, land and workers needed to grow food,” he said. “Our farmers are under siege… every single Australian is feeling the impact of the pain and hurt being put onto farmers, because the result of Labor’s bad policies are families being forced to pay more for food at the checkout.” Over the past 45 years Australia has lost over 15 per cent of its farmland due to government policies that have seen restrictions imposed on private property rights – from everything from land clearing to land use. The numbers are clear: over time, less and less of Australia’s land has been dedicated to agriculture and more and more is being demanded of the land that remains. The data shows a consistent trend of diminishing agricultural land since 1976, when Australia boasted nearly 490 million hectares that was either arable, dedicated to permanent crops or suitable for grazing. About half of the loss of agricultural land occurred between 2005 and 2009 as a direct result of state Labor policies. Australia lost 36 million hectares of

agricultural land — a space roughly the size of Germany — in just four years. So where did the “agricultural” land go? Almost all of it was protected for conservation. Of that change, more than 21 million hectares — a space roughly comparable in size to Britain — shifted into a classification called “conservation and natural environments”. Meanwhile, the area of land dedicated to “intensive” use, like land with a city on top of it, has increased by about 35 per cent – with less than 3 per cent of land that was formerly “agricultural,” impacted by the change. Bizarrely it’s been Green Left policies and the nation’s growing cities that are eating up our farms. Strangely the Greens are the pro-immigration party that welcomes a big Australia, but they are also the same group that would like to shut down most of Australia’s primary production as they campaign for an end to old growth logging, wild caught fishing, irrigated agriculture, the use of big tractors, agricultural chemicals and live animal exports. It begs the question, if the Government can wipe out a sector like live exports in a blatantly political attempt to win a few inner-city seats, what would they be prepared to do to achieve their reckless race to 82 per cent renewables by 2030?
TRENDS AND DATA
Normality resuming Another decline in tractor sales for October shows a further return to normal sales levels after record highs, the Tractor and Machinery Association says The market for tractor sales in Australia has seen further declines in October and now sit 24 per cent behind where they were at the same time last year. While the level of decline appears high, there have been around 12,000 tractors sold already in 2023, a figure which is in line with what has traditionally been regarded as a strong year for sales. For some months now, we have been reporting a slowdown in demand due to the predicted onset of drier weather along with the ongoing increases in interest rates. Clearly there is still solid demand for new machinery in the market though, as recent rains have brought some encouragement to farmers in the near term. Dealers continue to report solid inventory levels across the board with the biggest challenge being able to supply the precise machine a customer requests. Supply chain bottlenecks appear to be easing, due mainly to the lower volumes of machines coming into the country. This is particularly the case for containerised freight which is moving smoothly. Roll-on, roll-off freight continues to present the odd challenge, due mainly to the stringent quarantine regulations in place which can have the effect of sidelining entire shipments if a single problem is detected. This can be particularly stressful for
46
Farms & Farm Machinery
time sensitive deliveries such as those required for harvest. Looking around the nation, all states have experienced significant drops in the month, beginning with Queensland, which was down 26 per cent against the same month last year to be 21 per cent behind for the year to date. New South Wales was down 34 per cent to be 25 per cent off for the year to date, while Victoria was off 27 per cent compared to last October and is now 28 per cent behind year to date. Sales in Western Australia were in line with last year and remains 19 per cent behind last year. South Australia recorded another big decline, off 45 per cent for the month, and now sits 20 per cent behind year to date. Tasmania was off 17 per cent for the month and is 21 per cent down on the year to date, with sales in the Northern Territory finishing 8 per cent down on last October, remaining 13 per cent down year to date. Falls were experienced in all machine categories where we find that the small, under-40 horsepower (30kw) category was down by 41 per cent for the month and is now 25 per cent behind for the year to date. The 40hp to 100hp (30-75kw) range was also down 32 per cent and is now 25 per cent behind year to date.
Baler sales were a positive standout in October’s figures
Gary Northover is executive director of the Tractor & Machinery Association of Australia (TMA). He can be contacted on (03) 9813 8011 or at gary@tma.asn.au
The 100hp to 200hp (75-150 kw) category was down, this time by 19 per cent, and it remains 25 per cent behind year to date. Finally, the 200hp plus (150kw plus) range slipped by 8 per cent, remaining 16 per cent behind last year. Sales of combine harvesters have somewhat stalled and are now in line with last year, with just under 800 units sold so far in 2023. Baler sales enjoyed another healthy rise and are now 15 per cent ahead on a year-to-date basis, while sales of out-front mowers are down by around 4 per cent compared with the same time last year. In summary, there has been a noticeable pullback in machinery sales. While the current sales volumes can be described as good, the TMA remains cautious about the outlook for 2024 where the full impact of climate conditions, commodity prices, machinery price rises and higher interest rates may have a fuller effect on machinery sales.

The companies offer a range of industrial solutions
Growth potential Motion says its acquisition of Powell Industrial will create new opportunities for local customers Motion, a global leader in industrial solutions, has announced the acquisition of Powell Industrial, a prominent Australian-owned supplier of industrial and hydraulic hose and fittings offerings. Motion says this strategic move further solidifies its commitment to providing comprehensive fluid power solutions to customers in the Asia-Pacific region, and adds the acquisition marks a significant milestone for the sector, promising to deliver enhanced services and value to customers. “The acquisition of Powell Industrial aligns seamlessly with our five-year strategy to expand our fluid power solutions
offerings to current and future customers,” Motion’s chief operating officer Heath Fitzpatrick says. With a goal to bring its existing fluid power businesses under one focused line of business, Fitzpatrick highlights the recent acquisition of Powell Industrial as being part of Motion’s long-term vision. “Over the next five years, we have a clear plan to significantly grow this line of business, both organically and through strategic acquisitions,” he says. Powell Industrial managing director Darrin Sargeant says there is a strategic synergy between the two companies. “Bringing the Powell Group into the Mo-
Motion’s Asia Pacific headquarters are in the Sydney suburb of Chullora
tion business and expanding the Motion fluid power solutions division will provide success to all employees, customers, suppliers and stakeholders,” he says. “This acquisition will supercharge our next stage of growth with a hands-on approach, interacting and being connected with the market through a single solution covering industrial and hydraulic connectors and modern automated hose assembly manufacturing facilities.” By combining their expertise and resources, Fitzpatrick says the newly united companies are set to become one of the largest providers of industrial and hydraulic hose and fittings products and service offerings in the Australian and New Zealand market. “Customers can expect an expanded product range, premium offerings, and a true one-solution provider,” he says. “We are genuinely thrilled about the growth opportunities that this partnership will bring. It aligns perfectly with our mission to offer the best value to our customers.” To learn more about Motion and its new online platform, visit www.motion. com.au for further information.

Hemisphere GNSS’s SiteMetrix system
New horizons Acquiring Hemisphere GNSS will help the New Holland and Case IH parent company become a leader in automation technology, it says New Holland and Case IH parent company CNH Industrial has finalised its acquisition of satellite navigation technology company Hemisphere GNSS, positioning itself as a leading technology provider for agriculture and construction. The US$175 million acquisition, first announced in March this year, came soon after the company acquired its one-time tech partner Augmenta to enhance its precision sprayer offering. CNH Industrial chief digital and information officer Marc Kermisch says the acquisition furthers the company’s vertical integration efforts to deliver cutting-edge core technologies to customer fleets.
“Bringing Hemisphere’s talent and resources into CNH reflects the energy and momentum of our investments in tech innovation,” he says. CNH Industrial says it is accelerating its plan to become a leader in automation technology, delivering a fully autonomous farming cycle and extending automation and autonomy across a range of agriculture and construction applications. Australian roll-out General manager of New Holland ANZ Bruce Healy says the company will bring these technologies to Australia and New Zealand in different ways over time.
“CNH Industrial’s partnerships with leading technology providers such as Hemisphere GNSS continues New Holland’s focus on investing in technology and towards our goal as a brand for more innovative and sustainable farming and construction,” he says. “We are looking forward to driving technological advancements for agriculture and construction operations across the region, and transforming efficiencies and outcomes for Australian farmers.” New Holland ANZ Precision Land Management product manager Melody Labinsky says demand for high-tech agriculture tools is increasing across Australia. “Farmers in Australia are beginning to realise the significant benefits of autonomous technology, not just for productivity and profitability but also for their soil health and long-term sustainability,” she says. “We’re focused on meeting the needs of our customers and producing intuitive technology that can be implemented across all operations in a matter of days.”
Luke Chandler and David Gilmore spoke at the National Farmers Federation conference in Canberra
Big player Australia has been described as an important market for John Deere by a key figure in the machinery giant’s hierarchy John Deere’s global senior agriculture vice president used a visit to Australia to outline the company’s support for the National Farmers Federation’s farmgate output target. David Gilmore travelled from the United States for the NFF’s national conference
in Canberra last month and shared his thoughts on the future of Australian agriculture and how the industry can meet its target of $100 billion in farmgate output by 2030. Gilmore highlighted access to skilled labour and access to connectivity solutions that allow for automation as two important challenges for farmers in Australia. He adds Australia’s unique conditions and appetite for technology are reasons why the country remains an important part of John Deere’s global strategy. “Australian farmers are key exporters. They don’t have the safety nets farmers have in other countries and they farm in harsh growing conditions,” he says. “These are drivers for efficiency, and therefore faster adoption of technology, so farmers can remain competitive in export markets. We know if it works in Australia, it will work globally. “Because of this, we have developed several prototypes here including, arguably our best known, the round bale Cotton Picker, which when released saw rapid adoption not only in Australia but around the world. “It’s had a huge impact, increasing productivity for farmers by offering a solution
that helps address the limited availability of labour. “Several steps in the harvesting process have been incorporated into the cotton picker, which has also been designed to deliver harvest-time cost savings for wrap and hauling, fuel, and picking.” Gilmore, who spoke at the NFF conference alongside John Deere’s Australian managing director Luke Chandler, also says Australian growers have used the nation’s water scarcity to become leaders in global sustainability. “Australian growers demonstrate best practice of production systems – growing more with less, focused on producing more per drop of water, which has led to global best practice on soil management techniques,” he says. “Sustainability is integral to John Deere’s operating model as we strive to develop technology that has real purpose and impact and we have several customer focused-sustainability goals to target the reduction of chemical use and help our customers do more with less inputs and less fuel.” Gilmore also visited local farms, John Deere dealerships and the company’s Brisbane headquarters during his stay.

Silvan’s new SQF400D-4 firefighter
First defence Sprayer manufacturer Silvan has released two new units designed to help farmers tackle fires Silvan has introduced two new fast-fill firefighters ahead of this year’s bushfire season, which is expected to be hotter and drier weather due to El Niño. Silvan’s two new 400L and 800L firefighters have been equipped with a specially designed factory-fitted fast filler to make the most of a farm’s dam. These reduce firefighter’s refilling time to about three minutes for the 400L model and six minutes for the 800L model. Among the features is a UV-stabilised, impact-resistant Polytuff tank with internal baffle to reduce surge when travelling. Included is a 255mm screw-type lid and strainer with a drain bung for easy emptying and cleaning.
Both firefighters are powered by a fourstroke, 5.5hp GX160 Honda engine with a Davey pump that has a manual recoil rope start included. The pump has a maximum output of 415 litres per minute at a maximum pressure of 80psi open flow. The 3.1L fuel tank at full load will operate for about two hours. Other features include a heavy duty, manual wind powder-coated steel, 30m long and 19mm diameter delivery hose. The hose has an adjustable nozzle and flow rate of about 20L per minute. A full load of water with the 400L model lasts about 20 minutes, with the 800L version extending to 40 minutes.
When directed from the adjustable nozzle, the water can be delivered for a distance of up to about 20 metres. “Silvan has a full range of firefighting units on hand,” product manager Greg Everett says. “Most of the units fit neatly across the back of a one tonne tray and between the arches of popular utilities.” Everett recommends farmers have two complete firefighting units and accessory equipment ready to use so one can be filled up while the other is still operating. “These units are also great general-purpose aids as they can be employed for transferring water from a dam to the household water storage tank, livestock jetting or wash-down purposes, topping up stock water troughs, or general-purpose water transfer needs, including watering trees,” he says. “When considering the tank size of a fire fighter, be mindful of the tank dimensions, maximum load capacity on the vehicle and the maximum flow rate of the adjustable nozzle which is about 20L a minute.”

John Deere dealership group Emmetts has acquired Pringles Crouch
Southern spread John Deere dealership group Emmetts has grown its South Australian presence after acquiring Pringles Crouch The Emmetts brand name will be seen in more South Australian locations after the group acquired all four Pringles Crouch dealerships. The move strengthens Emmetts’ presence in that state and takes the family-owned John Deere dealership group’s footprint to 16 locations across both South Australia and western Victoria. The four Pringles Crouch dealerships, which are located in South Australia’s mid-north and Eyre Peninsula, have adopted the Emmetts name. Emmetts says the acquisition is expected to bring significant benefits to customers and staff of both companies by
providing tailored farm equipment technology solutions, increased sales, parts and service, plus greater product range distribution across diverse geographical areas and farming applications. “We recognise the many years that Pringles Crouch have put into the area and look forward to building on their strengths to remain a localised Australian-owned company,” Emmetts managing director Peter Emmett says. “We believe our customers want to work with those who live in their communities and share common values. With Pringles Crouch, we’ve found an organisation completely aligned with these core beliefs.
“By combining the expertise of both companies, we’ve increased our resources for bringing innovation that will improve our customers’ farming efficiency.” Pringles Crouch’s former CEO Craig Walker says he is “delighted” to have reached an agreement with Emmetts to take on the dealerships, as remaining locally owned was important for the company and its staff. “A major consideration in the decision process was to align with a local, family-owned group who understand farming at a local level and can continue to provide our staff with opportunities to build their careers,” Walker says. “This is an opportunity for everyone across the Pringles Crouch branches to expand their capabilities through enhanced training and development opportunities.” Emmetts operates across a variety of farming sectors, including broadacre cropping, horticulture and viticulture, hay and livestock.

PLANT AND EQUIPMENT
Hydrogen at ’em Hydrogen fuel cell power generators will be built in Australia and sold locally under a new deal between Toyota Australia and EODev Hydrogen generators are set to hit the local market, after Toyota Australia signed a manufacturing deal with French developer Energy Observer Developments (EODev). Toyota will invest $3.3 million to assemble up to 100 generators over the next three years at its former manufacturing facility in the Melbourne suburb of Altona. The 110 kVa GEH2 stationary hydrogen fuel cell power generators will use the same system as is in the Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle, which the manufacturer says provides zero emissions of either fine particles, carbon dioxide or nitric oxide. Toyota plans to distribute both the locally assembled and fully built generators in Aus-

tralia through retail partner Blue Diamond Machinery - which is dedicagted to the wider adoption of low and zero emmission technnologies - and will also sell them to Toyota New Zealand. As the market develops, additional models with higher power supply will be considered for assembly and distribution in Australia, the company says. EODev CEO Jérémie Lagarrigue says the agreement represents a milestone for the French company, being the first time its GEH2 power generator will be assembled outside of its production facility in France. “The GEH2 generator has been in production since 2021 and is currently sold across several European markets, in North America, in the Middle East, and in Australia. We see a fast-growing potential for its use in this part of the world” he says. “We are pleased to have the support of Toyota Australia in being able to assemble the generators locally, which will enable more customers to access this clean technology and help reduce noxious emissions from local power generation.” Toyota demonstrated the potential for the EODev GEH2 hydrogen fuel cell gen-
erator last year when it was used to power the giant neon sign at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne during an AFL match, and again earlier this year at the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix where it powered six marquees in the tech hub over four days. Potential applications for the GEH2 power generator include powering remote off-grid sites such as mining sites, construction sites, BEV charging sites, as well as events. The GEH2 generator can also be used to provide emergency backup power for hospitals, commercial buildings and anywhere where stable power supply is required. “This agreement signed today is not about a trial or pilot program, it is about concrete action that will improve Australian businesses’ access to stationary hydrogen fuel cell generators and help them reduce their carbon footprint,” Toyota Australia president and CEO Matthew Callacho says. “At the same time, our investment will help to build Australian skills and capabilities in hydrogen technologies in what is a rapidly growing industry that will help Australia meet its emission reduction targets.”
“Our resources help simplify the learning process for students, teachers and training institutes and – most importantly –place the student at centre of the learning process.” South Metropolitan TAFE in Fremantle, Western Australia, was the first training organisation to facilitate an official pilot. The feedback received from students and lecturers alike was extremely positive. Executive director – engineering, transport and defence at South Metropolitan TAFE Jonathon Maile says being able to link with Weld Australia and other TAFEs improved training outcomes, with a better
Weld Australia has launched a new suite of learning resources for the Manufacturing and Engineering Training Package
Bright sparks Online welding and fabrication learning resources have been praised by industry A suite of new learning resources for Weld Australia’s Manufacturing and Engineering (MEM) Training Package has been praised by industry groups, it says. The 12 welding and fabrication units of competency were developed together with a national consortium of TAFEs over the past two years to produce resources that are engaging and up to date, built with students, teachers and training organisations in mind. Available completely online and accessible via phone, mobile device or computer, the resources boast a user-friendly interface, diversified delivery methods, and audited and accurate material. Weld Australia CEO Geoff Crittenden says that a national industry needs national learning resources. “Whether you’re an apprentice in Kalgoorlie, Ultimo or Davenport, you should have access to the same, high-quality training,” he says.
consistency from a technical perspective Australia-wide. “It has improved our focus on digitisation and e-learning, and the increased the flexibility of how we deliver,” he says. “If apprentices miss classes, they can access the resources and catch up a lot more quickly.” To find out more, visit weldaustralia.com.au
