FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the latest edition of Farms & Farm Machinery Another year is almost over, and it has been a big one for both Farms & Farm Machinery and the Australian agricultural industry. The magazine underwent a redesign mid-year, part of which involved introducing extra stories of farmers and contractors using the machinery we write about. Two more examples of that feature in this edition – one being a contractor who purchased a JCB Fastrac 8330 iCON tractor, and another being a Hardi customer who has adopted its GeoSelect technology since its rollout to trailed sprayers. It has been wonderful to attend so many field days around Australia this year and spend time talking to manufacturers and dealers about their new products and innovations, all while enjoying the collective energy these events always have. Field days and agricultural events are a major part of what makes agriculture so exciting, and many farmers’ social calendars revolve around these. We have brought you a comprehensive calendar of what is on for 2024 to help get our readers excited for their favourite events – and possibly some new ones. The new year will no doubt bring its challenges, with El Niño conditions and the broader economic climate among the factors which the agricultural industry will need to overcome. One way in which agriculture always overcomes its challenges is through new and exciting machinery that boosts a farmer’s efficiency. Many of these machines make their way to Australia via overseas markets such as
4
Farms & Farm Machinery
Europe, where they are launched at major events like Agritechnica. This edition features a comprehensive wrap-up of the major German expo and highlights a suite of products which will no doubt be headed for Australian farms in the coming months and years. The end of a year also brings predictions about what is ahead, and the likes of ABARES and Rabobank have made their forecasts for 2024 in Australian agriculture. A comprehensive industry news section also includes a dairy tanker safety campaign, an autonomous excavator and a review into Australia’s food security. There is also big news about a newly formed alliance which has received $87 million in Federal Government funding to help bring agriculture towards net zero emissions. Featuring state governments, universities and industry bodies, perhaps the presence of this alliance provides some good symbolism for the broader industry. If everyone works together with a clear goal in mind, agriculture’s potential is limitless for 2024 and beyond. Happy New Year and happy reading!

Reducing methane emissions will be a major factor in helping Australia achieve net zero. Image: stock.adobe.com
United front The Federal Government has poured almost $90 million into a new alliance which aims to help Australian agriculture reach zero net emissions by 2040 A new alliance which includes 73 partners across industry, education and government sectors has been launched with the goal of achieving net zero emissions in Australian agriculture. A big boost has been received courtesy of the Federal Government, which has invested $87 million into the alliance alongside another $40 million into a Solving Plastic Waste cooperative research centre. The Zero Net Emissions Agricultural Cooperative Research Centre (ZNE-Ag CRC) includes all six state governments and has secured $300 million in funding over 10 years to help its viability. The alliance was brokered by the University of Queensland and Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
and aims to “develop technologies and solutions to reduce emissions in agriculture, mitigating risks to future investment and trade and securing the economic future of our industry.” Its stated goal is to achieve zero net emissions from agriculture by 2040 and exceed international emissions reduction targets by being below net zero by 2050. Agriculture directly contributes to about 14 per cent of Australia’s national emissions, the alliance says, with more than three-quarters of that being methane emissions from livestock. The alliance’s interim CEO and Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation director Matthew Morell says the time is now for work to begin on reducing emissions. “Reducing emissions across Australian agriculture is a significant challenge given the diversity of agricultural products we produce, the unique challenges presented by our environmental conditions and the need for new technology to drive emissions,” he says. “Time is of the essence if we are to hit our 2030 and 2050 targets. “The collaboration includes 16 major industry groups, all six state governments and the Northern Territory, 10 universities, 3 Indigenous organisations and many SMEs and grower groups. “This commitment of industry to this CRC is particularly important, demonstrating the leadership the sector is taking in finding economically viable mechanisms to drive to a zero net emissions future.” One of the alliance partners is the University of Western Australia, and Phil Vercoe from UWA’s School of Agriculture and Environment says the aim is to cut emissions while ensuring the agriculture sector’s value keeps increasing. “Our goal is to ensure Australia’s agricultural industries keep growing, while they simultaneously achieve zero net emissions targets,” he says. Another partner is the University of New England, whose involvement will focus on developing solutions to reduce methane emissions in livestock production, including the development of nutritional supplements and pasture to inhibit methane emissions, and genetic selection tools for cattle breeding. “UNE is excited to be partnering with the University of Queensland in the ZNE-Ag CRC which will build upon our world-leading research towards methane-free cattle and sheep with genetics, nutritional supplements and low-emissions pastures,” the university’s Julius van der Werf says. “These will be directly delivered to producers and supply chain participants through national platforms, and demonstration sites will be established at various locations, including on campus at UNE. “This will help boost engagement and adoption by producers and industry, which is absolutely essential to achieving the goal of net zero emissions.” The National Farmers Federation’s previously-stated target of $100 billion in farm gate output by 2030 is also on the alliance’s mind, with chair Debra Cousins saying there is an “economic imperative” for the industry to act on emissions. In announcing the $87 million to be invested in the ZNE-Ag CRC, the Federal Government says the money is “to further develop and scale up technologies to reduce methane emissions from grazing cattle and sheep, and to improve crop quality and production.” Industry and science minister Ed Husic says there are few challenges more crucial than achieving net zero emissions. “The message from the latest Climate Statement is clear, we’re close but we need to pull out all the stops to get over the line on our 2030 climate commitments,” he says. “We need to mobilise Australian industry to play its role in the transition to net zero now, but we also need to think about the next big steps, which is why it is important to get Australian science and industry working together on this.”

Beefed up
Australian beef production has increased, despite a global drop. Image: stock.adobe.com
Australia is defying a global trend by increasing beef production, according to Rabobank’s latest report Beef-producing nations in the southern hemisphere, including Australia, are continuing to increase production volumes, despite the rest of the world facing declining production, Rabobank’s Q4 Global Beef Quarterly report says. The agribusiness banking specialist says although Australian and Brazilian beef production has increased, it has not been enough to compensate for the production decrease in Europe and the United States. Global beef production across “monitored markets” is expected to decline one per cent year-on-year in 2023 and Rabobank predicts the new year to “play out in a similar fashion”. Rabobank’s senior animal proteins analyst Angus Gidley-Baird says the Australian beef sector looks to have “reached the bottom of the market”. He says a range of factors have caused a strain on the Australian cattle market through the third quarter, including higher volumes of cattle, congested supply chains, limited processing capacity and forecasts of poor seasonal conditions.
“In response, the ECYI (Eastern Young Cattle Indicator) dropped 37 per cent through Q3,” Gidley-Baird says. “Despite the same conditions prevailing in October, prices found a floor and levelled out. “We believe that the producer uncertainty that was causing prices to drop has eased and, as we head toward summer, producers will be more certain about what stock numbers they will run, returning some stability to the market.” Rabobank is expecting slaughter numbers to increase in the first quarter of 2024. The report also states that while production has seen a decline in the USA as well as reduced cattle and beef supplies, the beef sector is still seeing strong consumer demand. Asia faces an opposite challenge as demand is low, but inventory levels are high, putting a strain on the market. The bank expects North American cattle prices to continue tracking at high levels, while southern hemisphere prices remain comparatively soft.
The report outlines the dramatic price drop for Australian cattle (down 28 per cent since June) while New Zealand and Brazil also had prices drop but not as dramatically. Cattle prices in the USA were steady, however prices rose three per cent in Canada between June and October. Rabobank expects the ongoing slow global economic recovery will likely limit consumer spending on beef next year. The reported states that many markets, particularly in Asian countries, did not see the growth in consumption which was expected as economies recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic and it was clear consumers were being much more cautious in their purchase decisions for their meals. Indications from China are that the type of products in demand are changing, the report says, with products that are value-for-money being favoured over premium ones due to customer caution about spending too much. “This consumer caution may be supported initially by reduced volumes of more expensive North American beef and increased volumes of Australian and South American beef,” Rabobank says.

Food fall Rabobank says global food commodity prices are set to fall in 2024 after three years of instability Food commodity prices are set to fall in the new year after three years of record highs caused by war, adverse weather and rising energy and input costs, according to Rabobank’s annual Agri Commodity Markets Outlook report.

The agribank predicts sugar, corn, coffee and soybean prices will all fall around the world as production adjusts to higher prices. This will bring costs down for buyers, and for consumers too in some cases. “Describing the last three years of global agricultural commodity prices as volatile is an understatement,” Rabobank head of agri commodities Carlos Mera says. “Producers are still grappling with the after-effects of war, adverse weather, high farm input inflation and weak consumer demand, but eyeing 2024 as the return to a semblance of normality. “It won’t be plain sailing but the more positive outlook for the majority of agri commodities should lead to relief for buyers around the world. “Governments, businesses, farmers and consumers will all feel beleaguered after a volatile few years.” Demand is still expected to remain weak despite the relief on prices and availability, due to enduring economic challenges for consumers. The bank says high inflation and interest
rates are anticipated to limit the growth in agricultural commodity demand, causing weak global economic growth in 2024. Wheat, a key commodity for the developing world, is expected to be harmed by weather-related disruptions and possible restrictions on Black Sea exports. Rabobank predicts wheat to hit another deficit in the global market, which would mark five deficits in a row. Little support will be provided from Australian crops in the coming months as our nation is falling well behind the past three years’ crops, according to the bank. RaboResearch Australia general manager Stefan Vogel says Australian wheat will receive some price support from drier weather conditions locally, keeping prices on the country’s east coast above the US CBOT price, the global benchmark. “In Western Australia, basis levels have also improved compared with last year, but WA prices need to be competitive against the likes of Russia given so much of WA’s grain is destined for export markets,” Vogel says.
INDUSTRY NEWS Australia’s crop export values are tipped to decline in 2023-24. Image: stock.adobe.com
Crop chop Australia’s annual agricultural production is tipped to fall from last year’s high, but is still expected to represent the third highest result on record The value of Australia’s agricultural production is tipped to fall to $78 billion for the 2023-24 financial year, according to an ABARES forecast. While this would represent a $16 billion drop from last financial year’s estimated production values, it would still be Australia’s third highest total ever recorded. Drier conditions had an impact on crop production values, the report says, while recent price falls are also tipped to show on livestock production values. “Falling production values and incomes
are also linked to declining global prices that are reflective of higher global supply,” ABARES acting executive director David Galeano says. “The past three years’ agriculture has seen record-breaking crop production because of higher rainfall. “As we enter the El Niño period, we expect to see the national crop production fall from these record highs. “Crop prospects for winter crops over spring have been mixed, and planting of summer crops in 2023–24 is expected to fall, reflecting below-average rainfall and low soil moisture levels during the early planting window.” There is also tipped to be a significant decline in broadacre farm cash income during this financial year, with ABARES’ prediction of a $113,000 average representing a 64 per cent fall on the previous year. Galeano says the past three years of high incomes have allowed broadacre farms to build up liquid assets, which he believes should help cushion the forecast downturn. The ABARES data is broken up into two

broad categories – crops and livestock – which combines to make the $78 billion total production forecast. Crop production is tipped to drop from $57.9 billion last year to $46 billion in 202324, while livestock production is forecast to reduce from $36.1 billion to $31.9 billion. Livestock exports are expected to be relatively protected, only dropping from $27.8 billion to $27.7 billion, although it shows increased export volumes have been outweighed by lower prices. Crop exports are tipped to fall from $50.6 billion to $39.5 billion, with wheat experiencing the largest decline of 43 per cent. Despite this predicted fall in wheat export values, ABARES says this is still 37 per cent above the 10-year average. Horticulture export values are predicted to be a shining light though, forecast to increase by six per cent to $3.6 billion. ABARES also notes that Australia is in a unique position to capitalise on key Asian export markets, given “economic growth and consumption are expected to remain resilient in southeast Asia, supporting demand for Australian agricultural exports.”

Broad OFFERING
Australian International Equipment Group has access to a wide range of machinery and attachments to ensure farmers across the country get what they need Australian International Equipment Group is a broad name, but it is a fitting one for a company with a core operation that is both broad and all-encompassing. The simplest description would be to call AIE Group a nationwide distributor of both new and pre-owned equipment for the farming, earthmoving and mining sectors – but this merely scratches the surface. General manager Blake Burgess prefers to describe the company as a “one stop shop” that can connect customers with quality equipment to suit their needs – thanks to AIE Group’s established relationships with suppliers around the

world – while also having connections to a finance provider to ensure every aspect of the sales process is taken care of. While the Australian International Equipment Group name might be relatively new, it is the result of a rebrand about five years ago and covers a team which boasts more than 70 years of combined experience around the world. Burgess, for example, spent more than 10 years on the tools as a plant mechanic and moved into hire company management before entering the sales space. “We saw a gap in the market of supply and selling earthmoving equipment,” he says.
AIE Group general manager Blake Burgess. Image: AIEG
“The supply and demand of COVID-19 really took it off for us as well. “The relationships we’ve built with our suppliers over several years and multiple trips overseas to meet with these people, inspecting gear overseas and building that trust relationship is what has got us to where we are now. “We’ve worked really hard on supplying the right gear and good quality, low-hour equipment, which is hard to find. “We also place people into the right gear for their budget too, and we’ve built our business around that.” The supplier relationships which Burgess mentions are critical to AIE Group’s
success, as they allow the company to meet customer requests – no matter how specific or challenging they may be. Farmers make up an important element of this customer base, particularly broadacre farmers seeking reliable, heavy-duty equipment to complete multiple tasks. Burgess says wheel loaders, graders, 20-tonne excavators and dozers are the four most popular items across the AIE Group’s range. About 60 per cent of the company’s sales are of pre-owned, low-hour machines, Burgess adds, with the remainder being on new machines. Caterpillar machinery is AIE Group’s best seller, but it is far from the only brand sold – as part of having access to such a wide network means having access to a lot of different equipment. Every industry which AIE Group services requires different equipment, so what are farmers specifically wanting? “They’re looking for skid steer loaders, 12-foot and 14-foot moldboard graders like your Caterpillar 140Ms and your John Deere 770s,” Burgess says. “Machines like that, plus excavators around 20 tonnes, along with D6 dozers and D7 dozers for bigger farms. “There’s the odd scraper and also some wheel loaders as well. “Wheel loaders with stick rakes are

becoming quite popular. There’s been a couple of those go out to farmers in the middle of the Northern Territory.” One of AIE Group’s important points of difference is its ability to modify equipment to meet requirements, which is particularly valuable for farmers on remote properties where the machine often has
to play multiple roles. To pick just one practical example of this, the company has delivered a 2022 Caterpillar 950GC wheel loader to a farm in Queensland, which has been bolstered for the end user with the likes of a quick hitch, folding stick rake, rippers, fork tines, hay spears and a modified bucket. It is this customisation of machinery, along with established relationships with other providers, that leads Burgess to describe AIE Group as a one stop shop. “We can connect you straight to finance. If you need finance, it’s a phone call to Credit One,” he says. “It builds us into a one stop shop where you come in, you can buy a piece of equipment and we spec it up to how you want it. “We can supply anything - whether it’s a mine site level of fire suppression, grease systems, MDG15 compliance, all the way from that through to a clapped-out 25-tonne excavator to go into demolition that they’re just going to create scrap steel from anyway. “It’s that range of supply, we’re adaptive to our customers’ needs and we’ve got the suppliers and the vendors to support that too.” Another of the strong relationships AIE Group has is with Roo Attachments. “We choose Roo Attachments for all the excavator buckets, augers, rippers, com-

paction plates and wheel loader attachments as well, and we’re actually moving into distributing for those guys in Western Australia,” Burgess says. These relationships highlight the benefit of being a national business, which AIE Group certainly is. Its headquarters is in the regional Queensland city of Toowoomba, while
AIE Group also has physical presences in Western Australia and New South Wales and is often visible at major Australian field days such as AgQuip and FarmFest. AIE Group delivers nationwide, with Burgess highlighting plenty of machines which have been sold into South Australia and Northern Territory. A wide geographical network, a wide

range of suppliers and a wide range of products help to tell the story that goes into the name - Australian International Equipment Group. The only box left to be ticked is service – and an experienced and passionate team ensures that AIE Group can do so with aplomb. “We have a fantastic team with more
people coming on board next year,” Burgess says. “They’ve all been involved in the heavy earthmoving space to some degree, whether that’s on the tools or in the sales space of connecting people to the right piece of equipment for their tasks. “Our service comes back to our core values that we’ve set which are honesty,
integrity and doing what we say we’re going to do. “Apart from the access and supply of quality low-hour gear that’s hard to find, those core values are what sets us apart.” Australian International Equipment Group’s full range can be viewed online at www.aiegroup.com.au

Data depth Research by a Nuffield Scholarship recipient has shown the potential for data to change the way viticulturalists operate Tomorrow’s farmers can look forward to using wearable technology to see data feeds, including AI-generated management recommendations, on their land and in real time, according to a South Australian viticulturist. Research by Hans Loder, who received a Nuffield Australia scholarship in 2021, has been published following his international study tour, which was supported by Wine Australia. Loder’s report ‘Here come the robots, but what do we with the data’, outlines that farmers will continue to access data in two-dimensions through multiple apps on their smartphones for some time, but a future where they can see management recommendations in a wearable three-di-
mensional form is not far away. Loder also suggests these developments can provide farmers with the ability to manage a “digital twin” of their vineyards from anywhere on earth. “These tools will provide efficiencies, cost savings, decision support tools and an ability for individuals to manage larger areas, most likely remotely, yet still with detailed or maybe even greater oversight than they do now,” he says. New tools will all rely on capturing high-quality data, which was a key focus in Loder’s research. “Data is critical to assist smarter workflows, facilitate continual improvement, and to provide producers with decision support tools, machine learning and AI, The HEAP autonomous excavator. Giant heap European researchers have developed an autonomous excavator which has constructed a 6m high dry stone wall. Ilana Cohen reports. Bob the Builder and his team would be proud. While the famous television character did have talking equipment, the real world hasn’t quite managed conversational machinery just yet. Researchers have, however, taught an autonomous excavator to construct dry stone walls all on its own using boulders weighing several tonnes and other demolition debris. In non-commercial markets, handmade products are all the rage. Building dry stone walls involves vast

amounts of manual labour, thus making the by-hand method inefficient, timely, and costly for farmers and the construction industry. A multidisciplinary team of researchers at ETH Zurich, a public university in Switzerland, has developed a method of using an autonomous excavator, called HEAP, to construct a permanent retaining dry stone wall that is 6m high and 65m long. The wall is embedded in a digitally planned and autonomously excavated landscape and park. Swiss scientists and engineers devel-
which results in greater efficiency while improving oversight,” he says. The Coonawarra local says effectively leveraging data could help farmers maintain, or even increase productivity in a constrained labour market. Speaking with Chris Turkovich of Turkovich Family Wines in California gave Loder additional insight. “I learned the platform facilitates the sharing of performance data and pricing trends,” he says. “This data is collected from text message surveys that provide feedback to contributors within 24 hours. “There is huge value in this data, thanks to the speed at which it can be produced and the insights being both anonymous and independent of commercial players and interests. He hopes his research and work will bring clarity to wine grape businesses and help them understand data and how it is generated and stored, plus its potential applications.
oped this innovative design application as part of the National Centre of Competence in Research for Digital Fabrication. Dry stone walls are resource efficient as they use locally sourced and irregularly abundant materials, including concrete slabs that are low in embodied energy, meaning a more sustainable structure. HEAP – which stands for Hydraulic Excavator for an Autonomous Purpose - is sensitive to its area’s surroundings. Using sensors, HEAP can autonomously draw a 3D map of the construction site, localising existing building blocks and stones for the wall’s construction. The specially designed tools and machine vision capabilities enable the excavator to scan and grab large stones in its immediate environment. Using its own centre of gravity, the autobot can even calculate the stone’s approximate weight. Encoded into the machine, an algorithm anticipates the best possible position for each rock. It can then conduct the task independently by placing the stones in their given desired location, accordingly. This one autonomous machine can place 20-30 large stones in a single consignment, which is about as many as one delivery can supply.

INDUSTRY NEWS The report has made recommendations to safeguard Australia’s food production. Image: Adobe
Secure food A report by a parliamentary agriculture committee recommends 35 different ways for strengthen the nation’s food security The risks that spring from recent challenges such as COVID-19, floods, the effects of the war in Ukraine and outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease in Indonesia, have been raised to the global food system, where they are being felt. The federal parliament agriculture committee has released a report which examined ways to strengthen and safeguard Australia’s food security. This focused on production, supply chains and key inputs, as well as climate change, biosecurity and food insecurity, with 35 recommendations put forward to help this issue. “Food security is not something that any of us can take for granted,” committee chair Meryl Swanson says. “Despite Australia being one of the most food secure countries in the world, recent developments both at home and abroad have shown that food security presents real and growing challenges to the nation.
“Systemic change is required so that all Australians, and those that depend on Australian food production, will be food secure. “Consultation, cooperation, coordination and innovation are the keys to food security.” According to the report, a comprehensive National Food Plan should be created which “must have clear objectives and measurable targets set out in regular updates and action plans, and subject to regular review”. The committee recommends a Minister for Food be appointed, “with responsibility for the development and implementation of the National Food Plan, regular monitoring and updating of the plan, and accountability for achieving outcomes and targets under the plan”. Appointing a National Food Council is also recommended, made up of industry and community experts, “to advise the Minister for Food on matters pertaining to
the food system, and support the development, implementation, monitoring and evolution of the National Food Plan”. Developing a National Food Supply Chain Map is also recommended in the report, and should identify: • where products are grown or produced and in what quantity; • how they are transported; • where they are processed; • what the major transport routes are; • the main centres for the collection and distribution of product; • where transport routes are vulnerable and; • what happens if they are cut. Measures to eliminate food waste are also recommended in the proposed National Food Plan, along with measures to facilitate innovation in the production of food, measures to improve sustainability and resilience in the food supply chain, improve access to labour and reduce food insecurity. During the inquiry, 24 public hearings were held by the committee, numerous sites around the country were visited and 188 written submissions were received by individuals, industry and community groups and government bodies.

preparedness for multiple, concurrent biosecurity incidents. Biosecurity Queensland is running 12 training sessions throughout the state for staff, elected officials and emerging leaders of agricultural peak bodies in the plant and animal sectors. “(The) industry plays such an important role in helping keep Queensland agriculture safe from emergency disease and pest outbreaks,” agricultural development minister Mark Furner says. “This training provides an excellent opportunity for staff in the plant and animal sectors of agriculture to ensure they are prepared for an emergency biosecurity outbreak and know how to best support their sector.” Covering an “all hazards” approach to significant plant and animal biosecurity threats, the training was created in partnership with Plant Health Australia and Animal Health Australia. This approach includes content focused on four key aspects that were developed with the assistance of a leading biosecurity preparedness trainer.
These key aspects include: • how biosecurity incident responses are activated at a state and national level, including management and funding arrangements; • the role of peak bodies in a biosecurity incident response and how they collaborate with government during an incident; • the potential impacts of a biosecurity incident for industry stakeholders; and • how industry representative bodies can prepare for their role in a biosecurity incident response. All 12 training sessions will be held in metropolitan and regional centres between December 2023 and March 2024 with half of them occurring online and the other half being held in person. Biosecurity Queensland is working with the Queensland Farmers’ Federation, AgForce and other industry groups to help encourage participation. Registration is now open to all agricultural peak bodies and supply chain organisations and can be made through the Queensland Government’s website.

Safe handling A road safety initiative aimed at reducing dairy tanker rollovers has been made available Research revealing dairy tankers were 2.4 times more likely than other freightcarrying heavy vehicles to be involved in a crash has inspired a safety campaign. The training resources were developed through a project led by transport insurance company NTI and partially funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative. It involves a research report, training modules, and videos including never-before-seen footage inside a tanker. The report shows data from 2019 to 2022 and reveals the leading cause of single vehicle rollovers was speed. “It’s important to note when we talk about speed in this regard, it does not mean ‘breaking the speed limit’ – even at low speed, as we now know, milk tankers can roll,” NTI executive general manager Chris Hogarty says.
or

“Speed represented almost a third (32 per cent) of all major incidents for dairy tank rollovers in that time, compared to 13 per cent of regular freight.” “Our research and learning materials has the goal of improving safety across all levels of responsibility.” The research also showed a higher proportion of major incidents where dairy tanker drivers were not at fault (16 per cent) compared to crashes involving other freight vehicles (12 per cent). Hogarty also says the resources were the culmination of nearly two years working with dairy supply chain stakeholders, along with targeted research. “Dairy tanker rollovers not only endanger the lives of drivers but can also lead to negative environmental impacts that, because of the specific challenges of cleaning and contamination, can be more

detrimental than oil spills,” he says. “It was important for us to understand the unique conditions that make dairy tankers more susceptible to tipping, including varying load volume, unsealed roads and tanker dynamics that are unlike any other vehicle. “In a world first, we filmed the milk inside a tanker as it’s being driven. “We built a model dairy truck with a see-through tank to demonstrate how that milk moves and how the shifting weight impacts a vehicle’s stability. “We’re thankful for the wide industry involvement in this project – dairy companies, equipment manufacturers, and transport operators have all worked with us to identify key areas that needed addressing.” NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says the initiative is helping to address an important safety gap and ultimately save lives. Take command First launched for its self-propelled sprayer range, now Hardi’s locally-designed GeoSelect technology is proving a winner for trailed sprayer customers
Hardi’s Commander sprayer can have GeoSelect added. Image: Hardi
GeoSelect continues to take giant leaps forward for Hardi Australia, being showcased to the overseas market at Agritechnica, while trailed sprayer customers are also starting to experience the benefits. GeoSelect was first launched in 2021 by the Adelaide-based manufacturer as a spot spraying technology to improve accuracy and reduce chemical use. It was initially introduced for Hardi’s self-propelled sprayers, such as the Saritor range, but expanded last year to also include the trailed units. This marked a major expansion of GeoSelect’s customer base and allowed those who operate Hardi’s Commander and Navigator sprayers to start using the technology on their properties.
One such customer is Alexander McRae, a sixth-generation cropping and livestock farmer from Wallup in Victoria’s Wimmera region. McRae has been a long-term customer of his local Hardi dealership Wimmera Mallee Ag. When it came time to upgrade his sprayer, he stuck with the Commander’s triedand-tested features, but added GeoSelect. “We were trying to value add to the boom,” McRae says. “We did have a Commander exactly the same – 10,000L, 48.5m boom – but it was time to upgrade due to hours, so we decided to go down that path of adding GeoSelect to the next one, purely for being able to save on costs with chemicals. “It’s very efficient being a large capacity
and width, and having a 48.5m spot sprayer - as I guess you would call it – is very good,” he says. Hardi describes GeoSelect as a decoupled selective spraying system. It uses software in conjunction with drone images to identify and spray exactly where weeds are in a paddock. Lightweight but rugged antennas are attached to the sprayer’s boom, and Hardi says the minimal hardware required on the unit itself helps to increase both GeoSelect’s convenience and efficiency. It is not a drone-based sprayer though, Hardi points out, as the drone only captures images whereas GeoSelect is pure software for the sprayer. Chemical use is reduced by up to 90 per cent, Hardi says, while field tests carried

out before GeoSelect’s launch had live data processed with up to 5mm accuracy and a 99.7 per cent hit rate. Importantly, GeoSelect works with the standard Hardi sprayer nozzles. Hardi Australia’s precision agriculture business development manager Mark Armstrong says the expansion into trailed sprayers has opened up GeoSelect’s market, while also making it available on their largest units. “If we limit ourselves purely to self-propelled sprayers we are limiting our market, especially in the broadacre space,” he says. “Some customers are not able to justify buying a self-propelled, but some of them already have Commanders.
“Another benefit of GeoSelect on the Commander is the fact it can still take a 54m boom, but the Commander also has a 10,000L tank, which is the biggest one that we do, whereas our biggest self-propelled is 9,000L.” Wimmera Mallee Ag’s Hardi specialist Glen Hobbs, who sold the GeoSelect to McRae, says Commander sprayers are the most popular within his dealership’s western Victoria catchment area – making the expansion into these units an important drawcard for his customers. “A lot of it is cost saving and chemical saving, but as far as I’m concerned, the soil health has got major benefits too,” he says. “The less chemicals you’re sticking into the soil has got to be a good thing when

you get 10 years down the track. “With the drone side of things, some people initially look at it and think it’s another expense you have compared to a camera on the machine, but the drone really has got a lot of advantages when you start to look at the benefits of what you can do with it. “The fact that you can have a map that shows up year after year has got a lot of benefits, and you’re not throwing chemicals on just for the sake of doing it.” Expanding into the trailed sprayer market is far from Hardi’s only plan for its showpiece technology. Armstrong says Hardi is looking to crack the overseas market with its locally-designed GeoSelect, while research and development continues to occur with the aim of expanding its ability. “We took GeoSelect over to Agritechnica for the first time and the response we got was just amazing,” he says. “We’re looking to push GeoSelect into the US and into Europe. “It’s purely an Australian invention from the Hardi Australia factory in Adelaide, which makes you proud when you’re out there giving presentations. “The parent company Exel really love the tech, and Hardi International really love the tech, so they’re really pushing for us to carry it forward. “We recently completed trials again for green on green, as we did last year. “We’re speaking to a company in Adelaide that managed to fly some of the paddocks using a hyperspectral camera, which is something totally different for us. “We’re just waiting to see the results but we’re quite excited about that, and that will give us a slightly different dimension going into our green-on-green season.” Hardi Australia innovation manager
The Commander is also the largest of Hardi’s sprayers. Image: Hardi
Heath Thompson says other areas of research and development which Hardi is exploring for GeoSelect includes more variable rate selected spraying to better handle different sized weeds. “That will give farmers a bit more of an option in regard to how much they dose
the weeds up with and is something we’re looking at in the next year and into 2025,” he says. “We’ve also got a lot of feedback that people want dual tanks as well. “The system is capable of it from a data point of view, we’ve just got to look at how
we would do it from a plumbing point of view, and that’s something we will do with our ongoing research and development.” GeoSelect, along with Hardi’s full sprayer range, can be viewed at www.hardi.com/en-au

JCB’s Fastrac 8330 iCON is one of the manufacturer’s showpieces. Image: JCB.
Big deal A tractor that ticked all the boxes, and a dealership which went above and beyond, has led to one contractor becoming a happy JCB customer When it came time to buy his first tractor, Oliver Grinter was ready to consider anything. The compost and manure spreading contractor ultimately decided on JCB’s Fastrac 8330 iCON for his significant purchase, but his story is one of the manufacturer’s technology and local dealership both standing out, rather than the pre-existing brand loyalty which so often exists. Grinter is based in the Victorian town of Cobram, near the border with New South Wales, and serves both states through his business AGRInter Contracting. Plenty of the JCB Fastrac 8330 iCON’s new technical features met Grinter’s requirements, but it was the service from his local dealership Michaels Group which took his experience to the next level. “This is the first tractor I’ve ever bought and I was more than happy to look at any brand, regardless of what I grew up with and already had a relationship with,” Grinter says. “I would never have looked at JCB if they didn’t have this iCON out. That’s not
because I don’t like them - I’ve dealt with them through my father’s farm in the past, and I think they’re a good dealership. “Now I’ve bought the tractor I think
they’re an even better dealership - the best in the district, in fact. I don’t think I would actually bother getting a quote elsewhere again,” he says.

FOR THE OWNER
Grinter uses the Fastrac for his contractor business. Image: JCB.
“The biggest reason I’ll go back to JCB for me is the dealer. They deserve a lot of praise there at Michaels. “They’re dealing with people that have got between 10 and 20 of these Fastracs, not to mention their loaders and telehandlers, and I can ring Terry Michaels personally and he will take my phone call every time. That means a lot.” The biggest area in which Michaels Group’s service stood out for Grinter was in their willingness to provide a demonstration tractor before he needed to make a decision to buy. With it being his first tractor purchase, Grinter wanted to be certain the JCB Fastrac 8330 iCON was the right tractor for his requirements – and would also be easy for a short-term employee to learn.

Farms & Farm Machinery
He’d already had a positive experience with some JCB telehandlers he’d hired from Michaels Group in the past, so with the call a demonstration machine was organised – and it easily passed the test. “I wanted to make sure that I was going to be comfortable,” Grinter says. “When I go spreading up north, I’m doing between 18 and 22 hours a day and I want to make sure that I can do that for seven days in a row and be comfortable and not wreck my back. “I wanted to make sure it ran the spreader, and I also rely heavily on the ISOBUS for my boom spray and all my implements run ISOBUS. “I wanted to make sure that there were no hiccups there and that it was user friendly. “Whenever I employ someone,
it’s only ever on a short-term basis in my busy periods. “They’re not there for a long time, so it needs to be easy and not time-consuming to teach them, and they need to be able to pick it up quickly. “Michaels gave me a demo and I ended up having that tractor for 10 days. By the end of those 10 days, we had the documents ready to go.” Few would deny that the dealer experience forms a major part of any farmer or contractor’s purchase, and remains an ongoing relationship – however the tractor’s reliability and features are what matters during the operating hours spent in the paddock. JCB’s Fastrac 8330 iCON was launched last year, with the first units hitting Australian farms last summer thanks to national distributor CEA. It is a powerful, high-end tractor which Grinter believes is perfectly suited to contractors requiring some grunt. Capable of 348hp (260kW) and 1,450Nm of torque, the tractor has a rear lift capacity of 10 tonnes and can reach an impressive top speed of 70km/h. A modified Fastrac also earned the title of ‘world’s fastest tractor’ in 2019. Despite these workhorse-like characteristics, the tractor is packed with technology to ensure an ultra-modern user experience. The iCON concept – which Grinter says initially turned his head towards JCB – is an all-new electronics infrastructure suite, which the manufacturer says offers unprecedented options in the way operators can control the tractor. It boasts a new armrest console and touchscreen display, which offers fully integrated ISOBUS connectivity, precise GPS guidance and implement control applications controlled through a 30cm colour touch screen display. The basic layout has been kept similar enough to earlier Fastracs to remain familiar to existing users, however swiping right on the touchscreen brings up a more detailed running display.
This includes settings for up to six front and rear spool valves, a remote camera view, ISOBUS 2 Universal Terminal screen and satellite guidance and precision farming options. The tractor is also fitted with JCB’s new Smart Transmission Control which uses a thumb roller on the main joystick to control speed and create a user experience similar to cruise control. It marks a major step up in technology without taking away the features which made previous Fastrac iterations popular. For contractors such as Grinter, this all combines for an excellent user experience. “When you’re on a tonnage rate, having the level of comfort means you can do more hours in the day and more loads per hour - that in itself is pretty good,” he says. “It’s a very comfortable tractor, there’s a lot of weight on that drawbar there and it’s helping with my output. “Comfort is unreal, technology is above the market standard and the backup and service is unmatched.”

JCB’s Fastrac iCON range also includes the smaller 4220, which offers 235hp (175kW). Most other features remain the same, however the 4220 also includes fourwheel steering to increase its functionali-
ty in tighter spaces such as row cropping and vegetable farming. The Fastrac range is distributed nationally by JCB CEA and can be viewed online at www.jcbcea.com.au

McCormick’s X5.120 P3-Drive. Image: Clark Equipment
McCormick importer Clark Equipment is celebrating after the manufacturer won a prestigious tractor award for the second straight year McCormick’s X5.120 P3-Drive has been named as the ‘Best Utility’ in the Tractor of the Year 2024 awards. Announced in Germany last month as part of Agritechnica, it marks the second straight year where one of McCormick’s tractors has taken out this title. In last year’s awards, McCormick’s X6.414 P6-Drive was named Best Utility tractor. The back-to-back win is being celebrated by local dealer Clark Equipment, and shows McCormick’s effort to grow its presence as a premium tractor manufacturer, Clark’s national product manager David Knoke says, while adding that the X6.415 - the same as the X6.414 but with slightly higher horsepower - is Australia-bound. “McCormick are just moving ahead in leaps and bounds and are investing huge dollars into research and development,” he says. “The X6.415s are on the water and they are coming in our direction, with the first ones looking to arrive early in the new year.” The Tractor of the Year awards are decided by a panel of independent journalists from across Europe. In selecting the X5.120 P3-Drive as the Best Utility, many features were highlighted with an overall summary outlining its biggest benefits to farmers. “Compact, robust, versatile, and connected, the McCormick X5.120 P3-Drive is the ideal utility vehicle for daily use on the farm,” the panel said.

The tractor delivers 114hp from its four-cylinder, 3.6L Perkins engine, while the automated Powershift transmission allows for automatic shifting through up to 12 gears, both on-road and in the paddock. The axle and cabin are suspended to ensure maximum comfort in any application, the jury noted, while the onboard technological package includes the Advanced Driving System which provides automatic wheel realignment and direction maintenance on uneven terrain. “The digital equipment is equally impressive, with integrated functions for ISOBUS connectivity, precision steering,
fleet management, and remote diagnostics,” the jury said. For Australian customers, Knoke also highlights several other aspects of the X5.120 P3-Drive which he believes will suit the target market of general duties operators such as beef and dairy farmers. “The cabin is probably the big thing - the ergonomics, the layout and the high visibility of the machine itself,” he says. “It’s a full Italian-built transmission, built in the Argo factory. “Utility tractors are known for being versatile and manoeuvrable. They don’t have a long wheelbase, so you’ve got tighter
turning circles and you can get them into work sheds. “Visibility, manoeuvrability and ergonomics are probably the things that I’d highlight.” The X5.120 sits slightly above two existing McCormick tractors previously available to the Australian market – the X5.100 at 92hp and X5.110 at 102hp. The X5.120 P3-Drive is now available for Australian buyers, and Clark Equipment’s full McCormick range can be viewed online at www.clarkfarmequipment.com.au

Generating buzz

The bee industry is flying into the future with artificial intelligence and robotic pollination. Words by Ilana Cohen. While Back to the Future led us to believe that flying cars and hoverboards would have taken over the world by now, another new technology is generating a lot of buzz across the globe. The use of artificial intelligence on farms as well as robotic bees are reportedly improving pollination efforts and increasing crop yields. Today, pollination from honey bees contributes almost $6 billion annually to Australia’s agriculture ecosystem and economy. University of the Sunshine Coast researcher Trong Tran. Image: USC

Farms & Farm Machinery
In the most ideal of environments, there is the perfect amount of pollinators to plants for crop production. However, the reality for many farmers requiring bees is that there is often a discrepancy in that ratio, making their crop yield production transient from season to season. One solution to this problem comes from a new alliance forged this year. In July, Monson’s Honey and Pollination, an Australian beekeeping and pollination company, and BeeHero, an agritech company for precise pollination, announced
their partnership. Together they will bring BeeHero’s hive monitoring technology into the Australian market for better and long-lasting beehive and crop health. The companies say farmers can expect unprecedented visibility into the strength, health, and activity of farmers’ colonies through BeeHero’s platform, which provides 24/7 access to viewable insights from Monson’s powerful pollinating bees. BeeHero uses its unintrusive in-hive sensors to monitor each colony precisely and remotely, obtaining audio and biological data from the bees living there. Using AI-generated algorithms to analyse the data, growers are provided information to help them better manage their hives, take proactive measures, and eliminate the guesswork and inaccuracies in the pollination process. “This partnership represents a powerful fusion of traditional expertise and advanced digital solutions, unlocking unprecedented possibilities for the future of sustainable agriculture,” Monson’s director Trevor Monson says. “By combining Monson’s extensive experience in pollination in Australia with BeeHero’s innovative technology, we aim to revolutionise the way we approach pollination services. “Together, we will not only increase agricultural productivity but also play a vital role in preserving and protecting the delicate balance of our ecosystem.”
Pollination from honey bees contributes almost $6 billion annually to Australia’s economy. Image: USC
Further buzz This is not the only work being done on the bee front. Similarly, a new monitoring system developed by Monash University in Victoria, the NativeBee+ Tech Facility is “generating same-day data of crop pollination levels and provides farmers with the evidence they need to inform decision-making,” according to research co-author and lab director Alan Dorin. This means, farmers, beekeepers, and researchers alike can gain a better understanding of the insect-plant interaction from NativeBee+’s AI and micro-cameras. “These simple interventions can ensure a better rate of successful pollination and a higher yield of market-quality fruit,” Dorin says. “We believe that this system will serve as a benchmark for future research in precision pollination.” Taking it one step further, we can be on the lookout for even more AI and technological implementation on Australia’s farms, with robotic platforms such as Arugga’s commercial robot pollinator taking over New South Wales’ Costa Group’s tomato greenhouse. Arugga’s technology not only avoids the need to rely on bees to pollinate crops, it also tracks and detects pests and viruses, and prevents the spread of diseases from bees, the company says. But robotic bees won’t be taking over just yet.
Emphasising the importance of the little buzzers, University of the Sunshine Coast chemistry academics Trong Tran and Peter Brooks have been able to identify 16 types of Australian high-grade propolis, otherwise known as ‘bee-glue.’ In the two-year collaborative research project, partly funded by AgriFutures Australia, Tran confirms the chemical makeup of the 16 propolis samples had more potent antioxidant activity than some of the international types generating big profits overseas. These findings have allowed beekeep-
ers to find new sources of revenue with more industry jobs. “Established cosmeceutical industries add propolis to products intended to have both cosmetic and therapeutic benefits, such as mouth sprays, soap, toothpaste, dietary supplements and skincare creams,” Tran says. “In the food and beverage industry, propolis can be a preservative.” Farmers might just want to start getting busy with bees and the new supporting AI to transform their operations for the future.

With 24 halls busting with farm machinery and a record crowd of visitors, Agritechnica returned with a bang last month following its COVID-19 enforced hiatus. Words and images: Chris McCullough It was a welcome return for the show held every two years in Germany, as this was the first Agritechnica staged since the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2021 event. A record 470,000 visitors trawled through the halls set on 39 hectares, packed to the brim with the latest machinery and technology. In total, 2,812 exhibitors from 52 countries supported the show organised by the DLG, German Agricultural Society. A number of manufacturers took the opportunity to reveal new machines to the public, including many which will be relevant to the Australian market. Alternative fuelled tractors and other self-propelled machines are becoming more apparent at these shows, as companies try to show their willingness to help reduce agricultural emissions. “As the world’s leading trade fair for agricultural machinery, Agritechnica 2023 has demonstrated how highly innovative the industry is,” Agritechnica project manager Timo Zipf says. “After four years, exhibitors were finally able to present their wealth of innovations to the world here in Hanover once again. Everyone appreciated the opportunity for face-to-face discussions, exchanges and networking opportunities, also to make new business contacts.” The next Agritechnica will take place from November 9 to 15, 2025.

Karl weighs in at around 8.5 tonnes, has a rear lift capacity of 5 tonnes and front lift capacity of 3.5 tonnes. It can travel at speeds up to 15km/h and sits at 2.5m wide. A choice of track widths at 34cm or 45cm is available. Karl can handle a wide variety of tools in the field but most trials so far have been focused in the tillage sector. When the farmer defines the land that the work is required on, a work plan is then created, Karl is placed in the plot, some adjustments are made and off it goes automatically. The end result is successful cultivation such as the correct tillage depth, adequate seed application rate or even regular and fine shredding of residue.
Lemken Solitair A new 9m version of the Solitair DT combination seed drill featured on the Lemken stand, as did Lemken Australia and New Zealand area sales manager Craig Hopkins. “This new wider drill has been developed thanks to demands from farmers in Australia and New Zealand,” Hopkins said at the show. “It is brand new for the 2024 market and will suit the big contractors and farmers in New Zealand’s South Island and Australia. “This combi drill comes with a new third box, so we now have two for seed and one for fertiliser. It has individual electrically driven, fertiliser-proof metering units, section control and will need 400hp on the front to operate the machine.”

Dieci electric telehandler Dieci has entered the electric telehandler market with its new Mini Agri-e model shown at Agritechnica. This all-electric agricultural telehandler has a maximum load capacity of 2,600kg, a lift height of up to 6m and is powered by a 19kW traction motor and a 22kW hydraulic motor. The E-Modular powerpack uses one or two lithium batteries and can work a full day on a single charge.
Joskin Bioflex aerator On the Joskin stand was one of its new crop weeders, which have three elements for models up to 7.2m working width, and five elements for models up to 12m working width. Each element includes up to 96 tines distributed over six consecutive rows. The 7mm diameter tines on the Bioflex are highly flexible, following the ground relief perfectly, while remaining independent of one another. Bioflex aerators are available in 4.8m, 6m and 7.2m versions with single folding system, and in 8.4m, 9.6m, 10.8m and 12m versions with double folding system. As standard, they are equipped with 3+4 gauge wheels for models up to 7.2m, and 5+6 gauge wheels for those up to 12m working width. Each model is hitched to the three-point linkage of the tractor and has an external width of just 2.5m.
Joskin slurry boom Joskin also showed its new high performance 12m slurry boom in its Start range. Whereas the previous 12m model had a single macerator to distribute the slurry into the 44 hoses, the new version is now equipped with two Scalper macerators and four additional hoses. In total, there are now 48 hoses, with a 25cm row spacing, compared with 28cm previously. The presence of two macerators ensures a better slurry distribution and also increases the working speed since there is a higher flow of slurry at the tank outlet. This model is also equipped with gauge wheels on both sides of the boom. These improvements can be found on both the Pendislide Start version with skids and the Penditwist Start version with line hoses.

Case IH Quadtrac Case IH chose to show off the biggest tractor the manufacturer has ever built, its Case IH Quadtrac 715 tractor, rated at 715hp. At the heart of this machine is the FPT Cursor 16 engine, which delivers up to 778hp at maximum power. Together with increased torque, improved engine power, an 11 per cent larger fuel tank and other improvements, Case IH says this beast will deliver high productivity. Maximum pump flow rate is 428L/min and it has the 16-speed Powerdrive transmission for ultra smoothness in the field. Only available in tracked Quadtrac format, the new tracks are 305mm longer, giving more ground contact and offering enhanced power transfer, greater traction, and reduced compaction.
Deutz-Fahr tractor On the Deutz-Fahr stand was a 5115 DF TTV tractor with four-wheel steering technology, suited for municipal work in confined spaces. The four-wheel steering reduces turning radius by up to 26 per cent. The technology is available in two three-cylinder models, 90hp to 100hp, and three four-cylinder models between 95hp and 126hp. A number of steering modes are available including crab steer where the rear axle steers in the same direction as the front axle, enabling diagonal manoeuvring and reducing the need for frequent direction changes. These tractors are powered by the latest FARMotion 35 and FARMotion 45 engines.
Krampe trailer If you want to shift farmyard manure, or any other commodity, Krampe’s new ProBody 760 trailer will do the job. This trailer can haul 24 tonnes at 40km/h and has a body capacity of up to 40 cubic metres, using extension sides. The normal grain body itself is 2m tall, 2.32m wide and is 8m long, while loading height is 3.57m. The inclined front wall increases the loading volume while maintaining manoeuvrability and overall length, while a large inspection window provides an easy view into the body. The angle of the front wall facilitates load sliding, ensuring faster and safer unloading. Chassis is made of large-volume 300 x 150 mm rectangular tube, and has a suspended, height-adjustable drawbar for low hitch position with flanged 80mm ball head coupling.

Roc windrower One of the latest grass windrowers on display from Roc, currently merging into the Kverneland Group, was the RT1150 model with overall working width of 11.5m. These machines differ from traditional rakes as the Roc RT1150 lifts the crop up before transporting it on a conveyor belt, whereas traditional rakes drag the crop on the ground up into the windrow. By using the Roc system the crop is lifted and put gently on the belt in order to be transported and deposited centrally without any damage. Roc claims its machines save power and fuel consumption as only one 100hp tractor is needed to form a swath every 10m with the RT1150. This machine folds up to 3m wide and 3m tall for road transport and sits on 500/50 x R17 tyres.
Siloking eTruck Siloking exhibited one of its new electric Truckline eTruck 2012 feed mixers that range from 12 cubic metres to 20 cubic metre capacities. On stand was the 18 cubic metre version with a new individual drive concept for mixing augers and wheels, as well as high quality lithium-ion batteries.
38
Farms & Farm Machinery
The new models each have two mixing augers, each driven by its own motor, except for the smallest model - the eTruck 2012-12 – which has a capacity of 12 cubic metres and only one mixing auger. The total system power of the mixing drive is 80kW which helps ensure a homogeneous feed mixture even with
round bales. Battery life sufficient for two to four container fills, and allows for 3,000 to 5,000 full charge cycles. In the cab, the control panel includes functions for mixing at 17rpm, cutting at 40rpm, and residual emptying at 55rpm. The driving speed ranges from 0-15km/h.
McHale balers McHale launched its new V6760 and V8960 fully automatic variable chamber balers, which are the highest spec machine in the V6/V8 range. McHale has created its highest output pick-up for the V6760/V8960 to increase crop intake through more efficient crop flow. The new tapered feed channel encourages the crop to flow from the pick-up, towards the rotor and into the bale chamber, maximising throughput. To reduce maintenance, all ProfiFlo pick-ups are fitted with a heavier driveline which reduces chain load and increases chain life. Customers can choose between a five-tine bar cam track pick-up or the six-tine bar camless pick-up which has increased in width. A 540rpm gearbox is equipped on the V6760/V8960 as standard, plus a 1000rpm gearbox is available as an optional extra to optimise machine performance. These fully automatic machines are ISOBUS compatible with the option of using McHale’s Iso-Play 7 or Iso-Play 12 terminals.

Krone Lemken automatic vehicle Krone and Lemken joined forces to present their VTE automatic towing vehicle with a Krone mower attached. All implements on this vehicle are automatically re-adjusted by means of high-quality sensor systems to ensure that optimum working quality is always achieved. Power is supplied by a diesel MTU four-cylinder engine that delivers 230hp to a generator, which then supplies electrical power to both axles and PTO. A standardised interface connects the towing vehicle with the attachment device and ensures continuous data exchange in real time. In this manner, the data recorded on the attachment device and forwarded to the towing vehicle is continuously compared with previously defined values. In case of deviations, changes are made automatically to the setting of the attachment device. In extreme cases of malfunctions or damage, the unit is stopped.
Steyr hybrid tractor Steyr’s new Hybrid CVT tractor, based on the 180hp Steyr 6175 Impuls CVT platform, featured on the stand. Power is boosted to 260hp by the electrically powered front axle, which also features a newly-developed independent suspension. The combination of higher power in a lighter package is made possible primarily because of the combination of hydro-mechanical CVT drive to the rear axle and the hybrid module on the front axle, both of which can be combined with an intelligent 4WD clutch. The E-CVT function means the tractor is powered purely hybrid-electrically at up to 75kW and a low 1,100rpm, enhancing comfort with non-constant PTO loads such as big square baler work, and maintaining ground speed via electric drive, with no mechanical connection with the engine.

Faresin electric wagon Faresin revealed its first all-electric Leader PF 1.14 self-propelled mixer wagon with 14 cubic metre capacity. The machine is powered by a 91kW, 210Ah lithium iron-phosphate battery integrated with Farmatics telematics for remote control, which is installed in the rear engine compartment. Traction power is provided by a 51kW electric motor positioned in the rear axle, which also transmits motion to the front axle via a cardan shaft. The system has two gears that allow travel up to a maximum speed of 20km/h. The Leader PF Full Electric has four drive and steering wheels that allow three types of steering. It is also equipped with a hydropneumatic suspension that can be adjusted in height via a control in the cab, allowing comfortable and safe driving. A 45kW electric motor supplies power for all types of mixes thanks to the eight mixing speeds. In addition, a special cleaning function allows the auger to completely discharge the mixture inside the mixing tub.
Nexat modular vehicle A huge area was needed for Nexat to make its debut appearance at Agritechnica with its multi-use crop vehicle. Nexat is a state-of-the-art modular vehicle that can be fitted with interchangeable implements which perform tillage, sowing, plant protection and harvesting tasks. The Nexco harvesting module, for example, enables throughput to be increased by over 50 per cent when compared to a traditional large combine. It even has an unrivalled solution for uniform straw distribution, eliminating the need for additional cultivation steps and enabling a true controlled traffic farming to be practised all year round. Depending on the Nexat’s configuration, its wide-span controlled traffic method enables working widths of 6m to 24m. This means that 95 per cent of the entire arable area may never be driven over again depending on the configuration, ensuring the maximum yield potential is realised and the soil and environment are protected to the greatest degree possible. Nexat is electrically driven as its generators are currently powered by two independently driven 550hp diesel engines, but the system itself is prepared to be powered by green hydrogen fuel cells.

Merlo electric telehandler A new full size electric TFe 43.7 telehandler was on the Merlo stand, still in prototype stage but already creating huge interest. It has a modular pack design which means the electric pack can be moved from one machine to others in the Merlo stable. The Italian manufacturer has switched to lithium-ion batteries for this larger machine, giving it more output and productivity. It has a lift capacity of 4.3 tonnes up to 7m high.
Valtra Q305 tractor Sitting pride of place in the Valtra stand was one of its Q305 tractors, powered by a 7.4-litre six-cylinder engine and driven by a CVT transmission. Although not the newest tractor series in the stable, visitors were drawn to the Q Series at the show due to its sharp looks and presence. There are five tractors in the Q Series ranging from 230hp to 305hp, all of which are loaded with a host of smart technology. The Q305 model on the stand is the largest at 305hp.
Pottinger Novacat A front mower with automatic curved side shift was introduced on the Pottinger stand. Namely the Novacat F3100 Opticurve, this mower guarantees a perfect overlap with the rear mower and ensures the tractor drives along a clear track free of forage when cornering and working on steep ground. Even if the tractor drifts sideways when cornering or on steep terrain, the rear tyre of the tractor does not run over grass that has not been cut yet because the mower shifts towards the inner radius of the curve.

TRENDS AND DATA
Continued correction November’s tractor sales show another decline as the market adjusts following recent highs, however large unit sales provided a bright spot Further declines have occurred in tractor sales across Australia in November, with around 900 units being sold in the month. This is 33 per cent behind November last year, bringing the year-to-date figure to a level which is 24 per cent behind the same time last year. There have now been over 13,000 tractors sold in 2023, which is well ahead of the long-term trend, however if these declines continue, we can expect much lower sales in 2024 and potentially beyond. There is no doubt that the market is adjusting to the higher-than-average sales volumes of 2021 and 2022, however economic and environmental factors are also contributing to this correction. Not only are local interest rates having an impact, but the inflationary effects of increased labour costs and ongoing supply chain difficulties have seen machinery prices rise significantly. History tells us these can take some time to unwind, if at all. While machinery dealership yards are boasting plenty of stock, we continue to experience frustration with the processing of machines through Australian wharves. All attempts to have priority applied to machinery that might be time sensitive are met with the answer that the system

is overloaded and can only manage on a first-come, first-in basis. This means that agricultural machinery must take its place alongside such things as passenger vehicles when it comes to being released from quarantine and if delays are experienced, the impact can be significant. Looking around the nation, all states have again experienced significant drops in November, beginning with Queensland which was down 48 per cent against the same month last year to be 27 per cent behind for the year to date. New South Wales was down 40 per cent for November to be 26 per cent off year to date, while Victoria was off 37 per cent for the month and is now 28 per cent behind year to date. Sales in Western Australia were down 29 per cent in November and that state remains 19 per cent behind last year. South Australia was the only bright point, recording a rise of 40 per cent against the same month last year and now sits 16 per cent behind year to date. Tasmania was off 20 per cent for the month and is 21 per cent down year to date, while sales in the Northern Territory finished 69 per cent down and remain 19 per cent down year to date. Falls were experienced in all machine categories except for the 200hp plus (150kW plus) range, which was up 40 per

cent on the same month last year but remains 16 per cent behind for the year to date. The small, under-40 hp (under 30kW) category was down by 48 per cent for the month and is now 27 per cent behind year to date. The 40hp to 100hp (30-75kW) range was down 48 per cent for November and is now 27 per cent behind year to date. The 100hp to 200hp (75-150kW) category was also down, this time by 27 per cent, and remains 25 per cent behind year to date. Sales of combine harvesters have all but come to an end for the year, with 125 units sold in November, which takes the year end figure to just over 900. Baler sales have also tapered and are now 3.5 per cent ahead on a year-to-date basis, and sales of out-front mowers are down by around 9 per cent compared with the same time last year.

Farmers push back Looking to impose restrictions on Australian farmers in a bid to reduce carbon emissions could land the government in hot water, WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington says. The federal Labor government has set itself the impossible tasks of reducing carbon emissions by 43 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. In fact, the government has gone as far as locking these targets into law with the Climate Change Bill 2022 which was passed last year amongst much self-congratulation as the government basked in the positive virtue that flowed from the teal-voting Tesla class. Twelve months later and the hard men in Labor are starting to question the wisdom of locking their emissions position into legislation with no wriggle room. In fact, they are starting to worry that they are setting themselves up to fail unless they go out and find a couple of sectors to impose emissions reductions upon, over and above coal mining and coal fired power stations. Hence the recent call from federal agriculture minister Murray Watt for contributions to a plan to help the agriculture and land sectors cut emissions in line with the national target to hit net zero by 2050. Watt came out saying the livestock industry cannot rely only on carbon offsets and must change practices as he launched consultation on the plan. No doubt Watt has been buoyed by the success of the government’s anti live exports stance in driving farmers out of the sheep industry, so he now wants to hack into the rest of the national livestock herd to drive down emissions by 2030. You can see the whiteboard in Watts’
46
Farms & Farm Machinery
office now… Why target the 3.35 million battlers in marginal city seats by continuing to push up the price of power or tax them out of their cars when you can target the landed aristocracy and tax them out of their sheep and cattle. So is Watt warming us up for an emissions tax on agriculture as part of the government’s 2025 re-election pitch? No doubt the failure of his colleague Chris Bowen to build 40 wind turbines every month and 22,000 solar panels every day – which he said last year would be needed for the government to meet its 2030 commitment – has left the government scrambling for a new target to extract emissions from. Watt is no fool, he would have worked out if they can get away with killing off live exports then it should not be too hard to get rid of a third of the nation’s sheep and cattle, all in the name of saving the planet. But if he’s been looking globally for inspiration, there’s a warning from at least two countries about where it might lead. The first is the Netherlands, which amid a broader crackdown on nitrogen emissions proposed policies to reduce protein levels in cattle feed and saw government backbenchers go public with a plan to radically reduce the Netherlands’ livestock numbers. The plan, which was never official government policy, massively backfired as it led to the formation of a new farmers political party BoerBurgerBeweging — BBB for short, or “Farmer-Citizen Movement” in English, which then proceeded to

run against the government’s nitrogen strategy. In the 2023 Dutch provincial elections BBB won a bigger share of the vote than any other party in the Netherlands, which led it to take 16 out of 75 seats in the Dutch Senate, making it the largest single party in that body. The party has also won seven seats in the most recent House of Representatives election – with some analysts predicting it could form part of a leadership coalition. The second nation to stand out is New Zealand. You may recall former NZ prime minister Jacinda Ardern, imposing a world first tax on farm methane emissions that was legislated to kick in from 2025. The same thing happened with the recent New Zealand election, predictably the Labour government got flogged but they were already getting nervous of their farmers’ reaction and had walked back from their commitment of a 2025 start. But it was not enough. NZ Labour lost, and the new coalition will no doubt be looking to keep their farmers farming into 2024 and well beyond.

TMHA’s newly opened Traralgon branch. Image: TMHA
Branching out A new Traralgon branch will help Toyota Material Handling Australia better engage with the Gippsland region, the company says Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has acquired an existing forklift distributor in Traralgon, appointing the branch staff as new employees of the company. The company says the new TMHA Traralgon base will support further growth of THMA’s range of Toyota forklifts, Huski Construction Equipment and other allied products. TMHA previously had a presence in Gippsland region from its existing Dandenong branch, however the growth of the Toyota forklift brand in the area has prompted the need for an upgrade to a more locationally dedicated facility, the company says. The new facility features a fully functional workshop, capable of handling both pre-delivery and general service work, as well as a fabrication bay and general workshop bays. It also includes pallet racking for parts and pre-delivery storage, a freight dispatch bay, machine storage areas and a generous office space.
TMHA President and CEO Steve Takacs said the addition of the new Traralgon branch would help TMHA establish its footprint in the Gippsland region, helping it to better service customers. “We are thrilled to be adding a new dedicated regional branch in Traralgon, which will help improve the service we offer our

Its Sigma Control 2 controller enables connection to any master compressed air management system and continually monitors sensors throughout the CSG.1 (including motor bearing temperature, winding temperatures and airend vibration) to ensure it is operating within its optimal conditions at all times. Kaeser says this means the CSG.1 series compressors can deliver 16 per cent higher flow rates from the equivalent power-rated motor in prior models. Additional improvements to the compressor heat recovery systems allows the heat generated by compression to be
New oil-free compression rotary screw compressor range delivers 16 per cent higher flow rates, Kaeser says Kaeser Australia has released a new oil-free compression rotary screw compressor suited to specialised engineering applications such as pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacture. The new CSG.1 rotary screw compressors have air flow rates ranging from 4 to 15 cubic metres per minute and pressures up to 11 bar. Customers are offered the choice of air- or water-cooling and can select an optional integrated refrigeration dryer or an i.HOC (Heat of Compression) dryer. The CSG.1 can be specified as a fixed speed, fixed flow rated machine or, for applications with fluctuating compressed air
valued customers while increasing our base in the area,” Takacs says. “The ability to effectively and efficiently support our product from within the specific region is a very exciting opportunity for us. “This dedicated TMHA facility provides us with room to grow the business and bring on more customers, which we will certainly be looking to do.” For existing Gippsland-based customers, the new branch will also allow for increased parts and service capabilities, with sales teams also able to house greater levels of stock in the region. Contact the TMHA Traralgon branch, located at 33 Stratton Drive, Traralgon, on (03) 5173 0600 or free-call 1800 425 438. It is open 7:30am - 5:00pm Monday – Friday.

easily incorporated into other aspects of the business, such as space or process heating, thus allowing maximum reduction in the CO² footprint. The updated CSG.1 series sees service intervals for the compressor as well as gear oil changes extended by 50 per cent. This reduces service costs and means fewer materials are consumed.
