Welcome

Experience and modern thinking makes for a strong combination.

From the editor

I

met a lawn-care professional at a social function and we started chatting. We didn’t know each other, and after the introductions we naturally each told a little about ourselves. Of course, as soon it became obvious his working life was hands on with mowers, blowers and line trimmers, and mine was writing about those same tools, we were off and running. Fortunately our wives knew each other and were able to discuss…something. I lost track of their conversation around the time the subject of leaner two-stroke mixtures causing an increase in the operating temperature of an engine was raised. As the evening wound on I found myself having a really enjoyable time. On the one hand the lawn-care pro was a young man, I guess in his 30s, who seemed genuinely interested in the advantages of two-strokes over four-strokes (the politely unsaid implication being ‘speaking to someone old

enough to have used both seriously’). I, on the other hand, was fascinated to hear how he incorporated modern technology into his daily work, and his thoughts on the value of different mower deck sizes in different kinds of lawn-care tasks. He had some very interesting observations which had never crossed my mind, and some of the technology he very clearly took for granted was still something of a novelty to me. This was primarily because, although I read a great deal of research material and speak to a lot of industry experts, I simply don’t live and work with outdoor power equipment. Of course we ended up tossing back and forth the move to electric equipment, and he had some really interesting things to say on that as well. There was a lot of information and experience shared that evening, but now as I look back on it, I think the biggest lesson was one I’d already learned: keep an open mind.

There are so many young people with huge energy and huge ideas who have so much to offer. But the old dogs of the trade have hard-won knowledge to share which can often have a modern application. It was something I saw underlined quite markedly at The Landscape Excellence Awards at Darling Harbour in Sydney at the end of last year. There was a great deal of veneration from youth for experience, and those who’d logged some time clearly showed their respect for up-and-comers and new ideas. That can only mean a great future for all of us. Tom Foster Editor

Seven ways to improve your estimating Most contractors dread pricing, but there’s no getting around it, it’s essential to winning work. Anna Turner has some tips to improve your estimating game. 1. Embrace technology

Make sure you quote with up-to-date prices.

Estimating and take-off software will change your life. They make pricing far more accurate and faster than using printed-off plans and a spreadsheet. I’ll break down the benefits of these in-depth in future articles.

2. Be organised

The first thing you need to do is dedicate time each week to pricing so you can stay on top of the quotes and get them out in a timely manner. This will also help to steadily feed that work pipeline. You also need to have a system in place for pricing. Set this system up to ensure you don’t miss anything you need to price. I personally start by digesting the plans and writing down a list of items I need to price and a list of items that are the responsibility of other contractors. This second list is important to me because it ensures I digest the whole job and understand how it is going to be built. Every time you stop work for another trade it costs money and needs to be considered when pricing. I try to price 90 per cent of a job in one sitting. I am a lot faster if I do it this way, because my head is in the game. Once I’ve priced as much as I possibly can, I make notes of the prices I need to chase and move onto the next quote. I then come back a few days later to chase missing prices (usually material and subbies’ quotes). This method allows me to be quick, price large projects in about 1one week, and helps me price multiple jobs at the same time.

3. Update prices regularly

It’s most important the prices used to quote are as up-to-date as possible. At a minimum you should check all your regular pricing every six months. Most suppliers change their prices in January and July, so this is when I check my prices. However, over the past two years I’ve been spot checking all pricing every month. I think the market has calmed down a bit now, and I’m even seeing some prices drop slightly, so every month is probably not necessary. 10

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

4. B uild a relationship with your suppliers

I believe it is super important to get to know the suppliers and subbies I’m requesting quotes off all day long. These guys can make my life very hard if they don’t come through with a price, so I’m grateful for the work they do. Building a relationship with them not only makes my day more ‘human’, it means they go the extra mile for me when I’m in a pinch. I couldn’t be more grateful!

5. Think to the future

This one is a judgment call, but if you’re pricing a project you know won’t happen for six months or more, you need to consider how prices, especially labour, might change over that time. Clients don’t like a price hike; it puts a bad taste in their mouth. Sometimes it is unavoidable, but if you can add a few per cent on top of the project for price increases then do it. However, always consider this in conjunction with how competitive you need to be. You don’t want your quote dismissed because you’ve gone in too high.

6. Make your offer clear

I cannot stress this point enough. You must be clear about what you are offering in your quote. Write detailed descriptions of how you intend to build each item and clarifications to clear up any discrepancies. Some contractors

don’t like to do this because it makes it easier for the client to shop around and compare your quote to another. This is true, but the benefits far out way the negatives. Clear descriptions and clarifications protect you, because they clearly state your intent, and your intent is what you have priced. They also build your credibility with the client, giving them confidence to sign the contract.

7. Check your work

One of the most import steps when pricing is to check over the quote before you send it out. Check that you’ve not left an item out. Check your spelling is correct. Check the items against past projects to make sure the rates look about right. I’m not a fan of rate pricing, but it’s good to check the rate once the item has been priced. Sometimes it will highlight a mistake. The absolute gold standard is to have a colleague check the quote with you. A fresh set of eyes can spot mistakes and offer up cost saving alternative ways to do the work.

Essential

Estimating is an essential part of running a trade business, and getting it right is essential to making a profit. Spend a little time to set yourself up to price efficiently. It will make your life a whole lot easier and put a whole lot more money in your pocket.

Quoting to win

Marc Worner shares some tips on making the quote count.

J

ust imagine; it’s Saturday morning and you set off on your rounds of quoting jobs after receiving initial enquiries (and doing any essential research on each quote) during the past week. You are dressed professionally; the truck has had a wash, and your business cards are at the ready; all set to impress. Let’s say on this day you have six potential customers. If you get all six jobs you are usually quoting too low, we all know that. If you pick up three jobs from this quote day, it is a good day. Would you like to have a very good chance of achieving a 100 per cent success rate while knowing you’ve priced your jobs according to good business practice and your accountant’s advice? That would be sensational!! Read on.

Providing a customer with a picture preview of the intended job can make a world of difference.

Listen and learn

After introductions, let your potential customer know who they are dealing with. Proudly and purposefully let them know of your qualifications and professional association affiliations. 12

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

The more astute consumers will research the many lifestyle sites before they embark on any landscape project. If you haven’t thought of advertising in social media, you may need

to rethink your marketing strategy. Listen to the needs of your customer. Your quote must reflect an agreed vision. Otherwise, you have wasted your time and

Invite them to soothe their souls with the rhythmic sound of running water. Is it going to be a feature, a focal point or a subtle part of the landscape?

effort. On arrival, let them tell you exactly what it is they want to achieve from their outdoor space and what is a rough budget. If they tell you they want to entertain 100 guests regularly, allow for large expanses of level, safe and secure surfaces with plenty of shade and protection from the elements. If they want to have a cosy nook, ask them to describe the picture they have of it in their mind. Your vision may be entirely different to their ideas. Remember, you don’t have to live there, they do.

Discuss and agree

Then it’s your turn to speak. Remind them

again of your skills and that, because you have those skills, you can bring about their needs without any fuss, on time and in a professional manner. Ask questions – they love answering your questions because they know you’ll be giving them a quote for exactly what it is they need. Landscapers usually source all goods and materials from the same or similar places within their geographic work zones, so the cost of those goods and materials is usually much the same for all your competitors. Customer’s usually seek three quotes to make sure they are not paying through the nose, the person is professional in their

approach, knows what he is doing and that they’re getting what they have asked for. This last point causes endless discussion among many contractors and their customers. It’s vital, therefore, that from the outset, and by the end of the quote meeting, all parties agree on what the quote will entail.

Check the details

Even so, quotes can still sometimes be confusing from a customer’s point of view. When the customer receives a quote, the differences can be in the quantity/quality of goods and materials to be supplied. Perhaps one landscaper quoted a

proposed timber retaining wall @900mm high and the other landscapers quoted it @600mm high. From a customer’s point of view, a wall is a wall. “It just needs to keep back the dirt and be flat for my barbeque.” To a landscaper on the ball, there is a huge difference. Quotes may vary because of the grade of material proposed to be used. For example, pine or merbau timber for decking. The size of the areas proposed may differ slightly from quote to quote. Sometimes, the less-reputable landscapers may have a job lot of pavers left over they want to get rid of, or they may have always wanted to build a waterfall but have never been given the chance. Guess what happens? By persuasion, the client ends up agreeing to be 14

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

quoted for heaps of paving and Niagara Falls in his backyard. Once the potential customer has had time to reflect on all the quotes they may decide they don’t want the cheaper landscaper’s option, but they want what they originally believed they needed; so it’s been a waste of time and money for the landscaper who quoted Niagara Falls. Maybe the wall quoted @900mm was outside the DA requirements for that particular council and the landscaper was unaware of it because he hadn’t done his homework before the quote/inspection/ measure up. Landscapers need to make the structural elements only a part of the customer’s decision-making process.

Win-win

Once satisfied he has the structural elements of his planned project sorted, the customer has to allow for all those elements required to complete a landscape project, including colours, plants, watering systems, turf and so forth. Many landscapers simply devote too much time and effort at the quoting stage talking about the structural elements. They just tell the potential customer all about that which any landscaper could construct in his sleep, provide some common plant names that have been used for decades, and say they will cover it all over with plenty of mulch everywhere in all garden beds neatly squared away around the boundary fence line. Consumers are now better educated

and will no longer accept this second-best practice. The best landscapers distinguish themselves from the others each and every time by including all the elements required to be implemented in any landscape project in their initial discussion with the customer. Naturally the potential customer won’t be making any final decisions on the quote day, but if the landscaper has that potential customer thinking along these lines, its apparent to the customer the landscaper is thinking ahead and in a professional manner. The quote can grow to include the landscaper’s vision for the project. It’s a winwin situation.

Move ahead

So what should the landscaper also talk about in order to progress from quote to contract? Nothing can be accomplished without a picture or plan of some sort. Most people are visual and cannot envisage what it is landscapers can achieve with their construction. Show the customer what can be achieved by employing your services. Providing a customer with a picture preview of the intended job can make a world of difference right there on the spot. It may be that you just draw a sketch on a blank piece of A4 paper of some steps, or show how effective a feature tree can be blocking a neighbour’s prying eyes. Better yet, draw sketches on your letterhead and leave the sketches with them! Not only do they have something tangible and a point of reference, but it has also cost them nothing. Importantly, they also have your contact details at hand every time they refer to your sketches. Some bigger jobs will undoubtedly require a landscape plan drawn to scale with many specifications on it. Don’t try to be everything to everybody. Know your limitations. Don’t be afraid to say a landscape plan to scale requires the skill of a professional landscape designer and advise your customer of what to expect and that all will be explained and allowed for in your quote.

Never assume

The best landscapers include a garden designer in their network of trades. See ldi.org.au for a designer in your state. TIP: Remember to take your device to the quote and show customers pics of relevant jobs from your library. The best landscapers go beyond the standard of what is expected of them. Under promise, over deliver. 16

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Perhaps it’s an outdoor theatre that really arouses their interest? The best landscapers never assume anything but ask many questions of the customer at the quotation stage, on day one. What is the level of maintenance of the proposed landscape? Is it to be: * Low-maintenance (plants requiring attention only a few times a year) * Medium maintenance (the garden requiring attention say at least once a month), or * High maintenance (requiring attention on a weekly basis). Is it to be maintained by them or will a professional Horticulturalist be employed to manage its development? There’s a plant design to suit all budgets and the landscape quote should reflect those chosen options.

The result

Next step is to make sure you have some outstanding pics of sensational gardens at maturity. It’s no use showing newly plantedout gardens with non-descript hedges, a feature tree at two metres tall and masses of mulch. No one will be impressed. Customers should be told any garden is a developing piece of living art that takes about five years to start to look its best. Providing insight into the world of plants may also provide you with future income from maintenance of that very garden. Your job will always look its best in comparison to a garden that hasn’t had any professional care. A horticulturalist can provide you with the work schedule and costings.

The right people

Bill Gates is one of the wealthiest men in the world. Is he the smartest? Not by a long shot. He is, however, smart enough to know he should surround himself with the experts in their respective fields. Get networked. Join a professional industry association of landscapers and get one step ahead of the opposition.

Ask the question

Like us all, customers have a budget. Perhaps after receiving all quotes, the project looks far too daunting and the customer just gives up

and spends his savings on a holiday or defers his expenditure for another time – a time perhaps when you may not be around or able to do the job. The best landscapers always ask the question: is the project to be done all at once? They’ve recognised the signs and body language while listening intently, and offer, as an option, to do the job in stages according to their customer’s budget. It may be the customer gets a Christmas bonus every December or their long-term deposit rolls over in June and they’re flush with funds at these times. It also allows getting some add-on variations to the contract as they see the improvements taking shape over time and their enhanced outdoor living space is becoming an oasis. Invite them to soothe their souls with the rhythmic sound of running water. Show them pics of your water features. You need to determine their desire for water – is it visual, interactive, emotional, or perhaps a combination? Is it going to be a feature, a focal point or a subtle part of the landscape. Perhaps it’s music that excites them. Introduce the idea of remote-controlled allweather sound systems to the project. Perhaps it’s an outdoor theatre that really arouses their interest? Introduce the notion of garden art. It can be object d’art they have collected from their travels or a piece they have fallen in love with that they picked up from the local weekend markets. Is the potential customer open to the idea of a lighting design? Whatever; it’s an opportunity to get more business. TIP: Decisions will not be made by one partner alone. Ensure all parties who will enjoy the space are present when you quote. In need, delay the quote for a more convenient time. You will be the winner. Never rush a quote. Allow at least one hour. You can now see that there is a lot to talk about to best serve your customer AND WIN THE QUOTE.

Feature Make sure there’s a minimal amount of potting mix covering the root ball.

Planting

Jonathan Garner shares some excellent advice and experience on ensuring planting is both commercially and botanically viable.

T

here’s a whole lot more to planting than most people think. Often it can be the case that the job is taking longer than planned, and weather conditions might be very hot, very wet, very cold, very windy or very frustrating due to our fellow trades trying to complete their works as well. When planting practices go wrong, it can cost us both financially and is a poor reflection on a landscaper’s reputation. It also compromises the design intent. When the team’s planting practices are consistent through the project the growth rates and performance of each species should be equivalent. Planting time is essentially the last opportunity to correct any challenges for which you are responsible. Tell the team to let you know if they’re unsure about the conditions into which they’re just about plant an expensive and long-term asset. Teach the team the benefits of planting correctly.

By the numbers

Once the soil’s needs have been determined and it’s been prepared accordingly, the planting process can be covered with a stepby-step checklist for areas with acceptable conditions (we’ll cover trickier conditions in our next chat): 1. Setting out. I’m a fan of inserting short 18

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Remove any stakes or canes in direct contact with the trunk and remove all wire twist ties. bamboo stakes into the ground to indicate planting holes. But better still, place each plant out, then gently press their pots into the soil to indicate locations. The indented rings are the spots to dig; 2. Drench the root balls. This is particularly important with 140mm and 150mm pots as they can dry out very quickly. Fill some

bins with water, add some seaweed extract and wetting agent if they’re on hand, then immerse each pot until the root balls cease bubbling. Wetting the root ball through will ensure against hydrophobic potting mix. It also softens the roots and improves their resilience to damage. It doesn’t take long and is well worth the effort;

Feature

3. While the pots are drenching, digging the right-sized holes in the correct locations should be underway; 4. For most plants, the depth of the planting hole should be equal to the height of the plant’s root ball. The top of the root ball should be level with, or just above, the soil surface, after planting. When it comes to larger shrubs and trees, remember to remove the excess potting mix to expose the precious trunk flare before gauging the depth of the hole. If you’ve dug too deep, backfill with the native soil and firm it down with your boots. This will help to ensure the plant doesn’t sink over time and is the only occasion where compacting ground is appropriate. Plants sinking or settling into the ground increases the risk of root diseases such as collar rot. 5. Widths are very important. The wider the hole, the quicker the roots can run out and establish. The hole should be at least double the pot diameter. Ideally aim for three times the size of the pot, so a 200mm pot = 600mm hole width. If you’re in clay, make sure the sides of the hole aren’t polished or smooth (remember our chat last year about sidewall compaction?); 6. Use the dunking-water bins to fill each hole with water to a depth of

Genera sensitive to harsh sunlight need to be orientated as they were at the nursery.

around 100mm. This will both wet the surrounding subsoil and indicate whether drainage is a problem. Most, if not all, soils have much smaller particle sizes than potting mix. By virtue of this, not only does the root ball lose water from evaporation and transpiration, it also loses water to the surrounding soil via capillary action. Wetting the surrounding subsoil will help to greatly reduce initial water losses. This is very important when it comes to planting stock greater than 25 litres. If you’ve missed a section during soil preparation and discovered an area that’s draining slowly you may have to raise the soil levels and install the plant a little higher in this area. Keep in mind you may need to adjust your watering practices if this is the case; 7. Removing the pot can sometimes be quite a challenge, especially with smaller stock. We’ve all experienced situations where the pot needs to be cut open to remove it. If this is the case, and we’ve realistically lost the opportunity to send the plants back, then it’s time for some savagery. The root ball will need to be cut open or torn apart so any of the circling roots can be trained out or completely removed.

With containers larger than 25 litres, I’m a fan of using a saw to cut several vertical lines around the root ball to depths of around 50mm. I then cut away around 20mm off the base of the root ball. This should disrupt deeper girdling roots and remove older woody roots that have formed from being in contact with air or continually soddened potting mix, or are calloused from rubbing against the base of the pot. In pots 200mm or smaller, I cut them with my secateurs or tear them with my hands; Regardless of how congested the root ball is, we need to tease out the root systems. 8. Apart from for aesthetic reasons, orientation with smaller stock generally isn’t that important. When it comes to advanced stock and genera sensitive to harsh sunlight – such as Acer and Prunus – then they need to be orientated as they were at the nursery. This is why most grow bags and containers have a north symbol or mark to identify the orientation. The south or east side of an Acer or Prunus trunk will initially have much less tolerance to the harsher sunlight it will receive when facing north. The damage to the trunk and branches can be quite noticeable and growth will be greatly affected;

9. The benefits of backfilling with the native or lightly amended local soil are proven. Plants might not grow as quickly as they would in a lightweight landscape soil blend, but they will adapt better and become a far more robust specimen. If you’re backfilling with an imported soil, the roots often won’t venture out beyond the cosy landscape blend you backfilled with. When backfilling, make sure the soil is consistent and filled gently but firmly. This means pressing the soil down with hands, not the heel of a boot. Remember roots need air as much as water. With the final backfilling of soil, make sure there is a minimal amount of potting mix covering the root ball. Remember the drainage issues which need to be avoided when a finely textured soil sits above a coarsely textured soil. Finally, create a berm of firmed soil around the perimeter of the root ball. I call this ‘the ring of confidence’! This will make establishing a hand-watering regime much more effective and time efficient by keeping the precious liquid from spilling away from the root ball. 10. O nly stake a plant if it absolutely needs it. Plants get lazy being tied up. Ensure there’s sufficient play in the stakes and tie. The plant needs to shift around in the breeze for it to develop strength; 22

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

11. R emove any stakes or canes in direct contact with the trunk and remove all wire twist ties. These will end up strangling the investment; 12. A pply pelleted manure fertiliser at planting, but best avoid applying slow release or granular for a month or two. Pelleted manure fertilisers take around thirty days to convert into usable nutrient for the plants, so it makes sense to apply early. The manure will also assist with initiating biological activity within the new soil ecology. 13. Apply mulch with a light covering over the root ball and start a hand-watering regime. If this important duty hasn’t been allowed for, the value of customer participation could always be suggested to the client. I’ll explain the perils of relying on irrigation, other planting methods and establishment pruning during our next chat. Meanwhile, here’s some advice on hand-watering practices that will ensure future drought tolerance and far less reliance with ongoing irrigation.

A few more important points

• For spring and summer, halve the frequency of autumn and winter plantings • Focus all the water inside the ring of confidence. Use a dram wand or no

nozzle at all. Fix up the ring if it erodes. Splashing it around willy nilly only serves to encourage weed seed germination.

How often (frequency)?

• Water daily for the first two weeks • Water every two to three days from week three to week 12 • Water weekly until late autumn • Monitor henceforth • Unless you’ve had over 30mm of rain that day, don’t rely on it.

How much?

Aim to provide around one-third of the pot volume of water each session. • A 150mm pot = two litres: aim for 700mm • A 200mm pot = 4.5 litres: aim for 1.5 litres • A 300mm pot = 25 litres: aim for 7.5 litres. You get the idea.

Deep watering encourages deeper and more durable roots

Flow of water differs with every hose and tap. You can measure the quantity of water you’re applying by calculating the time it takes to fill a watering can, then relay that during the session. Remember to focus the water directly at the root ball. Excess water will drain away and moisten the deeper soil horizons.

Feature Plant breeders are turning their attention towards plants that either require minimal maintenance and/ or are low-volume litter producers.

Being Green is staying clean John Gabriele considers the commercial and environmental importance of plant selection.

W

ithout doubt, plants form the foundation of an appealing landscape composition, and all plants will require some maintenance to keep them in peak condition and appearance. The selection of plants then becomes critical to the overall success and functionality of all landscape installations. With increasing pressure on maximising greenspace within urban and industrial landscapes, appropriate selection becomes particularly crucial. Plant breeders are aware of the considerations afforded to plant selection in the new world of politically correct environmental landscapes, and as such are turning their attention towards plants that either require minimal maintenance and/or are low-volume litter producers. Both of these characteristics of plants weigh heavily on a plant’s selection in any landscape. Breeders supplying the landscape industry tend to lean towards 24

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

no-fuss, low-maintenance pants bred on purpose. This does not mean they compromise on the important characteristics required in any planting scheme, things like: • Soil adaptability • Drought and flood tolerance • Pest and disease resistance • Habit and uniformity • Shade tolerance • Invasiveness • Maintenance, and • Aesthetics. Designing landscapes that are environmentally responsible requires consideration of all aspects of the design, both hard and soft landscape materials must meld and complement each other to achieve the desired outcome and minimise environmental impacts. It makes sense to look closely at the functionality plants play within landscape from the perspective of

maintenance. While there are many plants that fall into the low-maintenance category, there are just as many that do not. Plant litter consists of flowers, fruits, and foliage, all of which can have significant negative impact on the utility of a landscape area and required maintenance, but at the same time provide a notable aesthetic component of overall design.

Falling foliage

Deciduous trees and shrubs are characterised by dropping all foliage in a relatively short period over the autumn months. This characteristic can be beneficial as the litter produced can be collected relatively easily over a short period. The volume of litter however can be problematic particularly in amenity landscapes and in streetscapes where the litter could impede both pedestrian and vehicular movements.

Fruiting trees can shed significant volumes of fruit litter that can lead to slip hazards.

Breeders supplying the landscape industry tend to lean towards no-fuss, low-maintenance pants bred on purpose.

Evergreen trees and shrubs, contrary to popular belief do lose their leaves, they just shed them regularly over a longer period. The volume of leaf litter is more manageable, but maintenance can spread over a longer period. Most low maintenance plant species are evergreens that produce minimal amounts of litter. There are however some species that tend to shed more foliage than others, particularly in spring as new growth emerges. The Queensland Brush Box, Lophostemon confertus being a case in point. The regular shedding and replacement of foliage on evergreens usually does not pose any significant maintenance issues which is one reason why they are popular in most landscapes. Fast growing plant species such as Grevilleas, particularly the tropical brush varieties including ‘Honey Gem’ ‘Flamingo’ ‘Superb’ and ‘Moonlight’, are spectacular flowering plants, but their vigour requires

regular pruning to curtail their exuberant growth. This results in a significant volume of plant material requiring disposal. There are of course many other species of plants that fall into this category, and each plant should be carefully considered when designing a planting scheme and the maintenance which will be required.

Flower and fruit fall

When it comes to flowering and fruiting, low-maintenance landscapes tend to shy away from plants that produce volumes of either. The litter generated can lead to significant maintenance requirements. Besides the necessity to keep hardscape surfaces free of plant litter, many flowering www.landscapecontractor.com.au

Feature Designing environmentally responsible landscapes requires consideration of all aspects of design, both hard and soft landscape materials must meld and complement each other.

plants and ornamental fruiting varieties may require specialist pruning, adding to maintenance. Flowers and fruits also pose a significant risk to the public. Flowers such as those shed by Jacaranda mimosifolia, Cape Chestnut, Calodendron capense and Franklinia axillaris syn. Gordonai axillaris the fried egg plant, are examples of tree species that should be carefully considered when selecting plants for amenity landscapes. Local government authorities are aware of the potential liability they face with from slip hazards that fallen flowers pose on footpaths. Fruiting trees also pose a risk, and it’s not just the soft, fleshy fruits of plants such as Syzigium cvs Lily Pilli, and Ginko biloba the Maiden Hair Tree (female plants) that can be problematic with fruit litter. Trees and shrubs that produce dry fruits such as woody capsules in the case of Eucalyptus spp. Casuraina spp. and Syncarpia glomuliferra, Turpentine, can shed significant volumes of fruit litter that can also lead to slip hazards on hardscape surfaces.

The upside

The value of trees in landscapes goes well beyond just their aesthetic appeal. Urban planners are giving greater

26

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

consideration to the value of trees in reducing the effects of the urban heat island (UHI). The UHI is climatological phenomena in urban and metropolitan areas that sees temperatures being significantly warmer than close rural areas. The increased heat is due to a combination of factors, one of which is the absence tree canopy in the urban area and the increased surface area of hard-landscape surfaces such as roads, paths and buildings. The radiated heat from these surfaces has seen temperature increases in the vicinity of up to five degrees warmer in some areas. The effect is more noticeable during the night when the stored heat in a hard surface is radiated back to the atmosphere. One way of reducing the UHI effect is through tree cover, combining deciduous and evergreen trees to provide different shade cover throughout the year. Trees enhance the quality of life in our community and are crucial to the well-being of urban environments. Their inclusion within urban landscapes provides benefits we can all appreciate. The shade cast by trees will assist in cooling the surface temperatures of buildings, roads and paths during the hot summer months. Tree-lined streets create the illusion of narrowness which assists

in reducing the speed of traffic, and they provide a buffer between pedestrians and cars, increasing public safety. Trees also provide habitat for birds and other fauna. Habitat creation through tree planting in urban environments is just as important as managing natural bushland areas. The inclusion of nesting boxes or creation of artificial hollows in mature landscape trees further adds to the advantages of trees within a landscape.

Keep trees in mind

The planting of trees should be undertaken with as much care and due diligence as any lifelong investment. Planting a tree is an investment into the future of our urban environments but it does require sound knowledge and understanding of the potential problems that may arise from inappropriate species selection and poor management practices across the lifespan of trees. With careful consideration to species selection and location within the landscape, trees can be an integral part of the urban environment and provide social, health, and environmental benefits, and can add value to real estate. It has long been widely accepted that being in the presence of trees, or nature in general, changes one’s state to a more relaxed one of ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’.

or those responsible for large-area green-space maintenance, the demand for reliability, efficiency, and safety is nonnegotiable. Enter the game-changing solution that not only meets but surpasses these expectations—the Hustler HyperDrive range of commercial zero-turn mowers. These powerful mowers are tailored to the unique needs of mowing professionals – people who spend all day in the saddle, take pride in their work and demand the best from their machinery.

Hot-weather reliability: the core of Hustler’s HyperDrive system In the world of professional lawn care where tight schedules and demanding jobs are the norm, downtime is not an option. Hustler’s unique HyperDrive transmission cooling system has been engineered to address the challenges of mowing contractors battling the elements, particularly in sweltering heat. HyperDrive is a game-changer for those

who refuse to let environmental conditions dictate their productivity. Advanced HyperDrive cooling technology offers real-world reliability advantages, ensuring your mower maintains optimal performance, even on those long, hot Summer days. Transmission oil cooling is achieved via six key HyperDrive features: 1. Industrial-grade slipper piston pumps 2. High-capacity, 10” x 10” aluminium oil cooler 3. A powerful nine-inch cooling fan drawing air through 100 per cent of the oil cooler 4. A huge 11L oil reservoir (beause more oil = cooler oil) 5. Industrial-grade, high-torque wheel motors 6. Hot-oil shuttle carrying hot oil directly to the cooling system. Extra hot-weather reliability empowers mowing contractors to take on more jobs with confidence, secure in the knowledge their Hustler HyperDrive can handle the toughest and hottest conditions without missing a beat.

Safety redefined: Hustler’s rear-discharge cutting-deck advantage

For council mowing crews entrusted with maintaining public spaces, or anyone mowing in the vicinity of people and property, safety is paramount. Hustler offers a range of rear-discharge options including 60-inch, 72-inch and 104-inch rear-discharge cutting decks to suit a variety of applications and transport/ storage needs. A rear-discharge cutting deck not only ensures a pristine finish, but also addresses critical safety concerns when mowing in public spaces. Traditional side-discharge mowers can pose risks, especially in areas where pedestrians and vehicles share the landscape. Hustler’s rear-discharge system directs clippings and debris under the mower and out the back, minimising the risk of harm to people or property. Productivity and efficiency can be maintained without compromising the safety of nearby people and property.

Beyond safety, the rear-discharge design also reduces the clumping effect and buildup of clippings into rows that can occur with a sidedischarge deck. The efficiency gained from the combination of safety and cleanliness makes Hustler rear-discharge models an invaluable asset for mowing crews striving to create well-maintained, hazard-free environments.

Speed and efficiency: unleash your potential

Public-space and wide-area mowing often involves combinations of open spaces, intricate landscapes, challenging terrain, and tight areas that require a high level of precision and manoeuvrability. With Hustler’s true zero-turn design, the Hyperdrive range offers significant manoeuvrability

advantages that other wide-area mowing solutions, such as front-deck or tow-behind mowing units, may struggle to deliver. When compared to larger commercial mowing machinery, Hustler’s HyperDrive range addresses these access challenges head-on with its zero-turn agility, empowering the operator to manoeuvre with unparalleled precision and efficiency.

Built to endure: your reliable workhorse

For commercial mowing applications, equipment durability is not just a desirable quality; it’s a make-or-break factor. The Hustler range not only promises durability; it embodies it. Constructed with robust materials and designed to withstand the rigours of demanding, everyday use, the HyperDrive mower will front up ready to work hard day after day and year after year. Hustler’s commitment to reliability and

performance stands the test of time, ensuring a crew remains efficient and productive, no matter what challenges the daily hustle might throw your way. In the dynamic and competitive realm of professional lawn care, the choice of equipment can make all the difference. Hustler’s HyperDrive zero-turn mowers are a sound investment. ast issue the Landscape Contractor Magazine staff were on the edges of their seats because EcoTeq’s first FURY was about to be unloaded and put into service. Much to our disappointment, it arrived just a day or two late to be included in the issue. But now that it’s here, we’ve given it a thorough workout, and we’re not afraid to say our anticipation was fully justified. This is an excellent, pro-level, batterypowered stand-on.

Recap

We covered most of the important facets of the FURY in the November/December 2023 issue, but for those with short memories, here’s a quick catch up… The FURY is a compact and highly manoeuvrable electric mower built for all-day professional use. Super-low noise output allows more ground cover without the risk of public disturbance, and the advanced Impulse Drive System (IDS)™ outputs the equivalent of a 24hp internal-combustion engine, making it competitive with any conventionally fuelled mower in its class. Coupled with a lightweight aircraft-alloy construction and a low centre of gravity, FURY is built for stability when tracking slopes up to 15°, and delivers up to seven hours of continuous mowing on a single battery charge. EcoTeq says the FURY’s ‘gate-friendly’ 32" cut makes it ideal for domestic or urban outdoor spaces.

From the drivers’ seat

LCM test driver Matt Wandmaker hurled himself behind the controls and set the FURY in motion. We’d love to say Matt ‘roared into action’, but the FURY is so quiet that would be a totally unfair thing to say. The 83dB operating volume is definitely a highlight of this machine. Another aspect of the FURY which struck us very quickly was, although it seems to have plenty of grunt – the 5.5kW deck motor and 6.8kW drive motor give the FURY the equivalent of 24hp – it’s very compact and

will work in some surprisingly confined spaces. The twin-blade 32” cutting width is a bit smaller than some machines we test, but we felt it more than made up for a narrower cut by getting into places a larger deck simply couldn’t. At the end of the day, it meant less tidying up to do with the push mower, less time pushing a mower, and that makes for a substantial saving in time. The FURY will also handle slopes up to 15°. While we didn’t have an incline of that magnitude to attempt, there was a reasonable 10° or 12° run available, and the FURY certainly has a stable feeling such that we wouldn’t hesitate to make the attempt at a steeper slope. As for cutting, Matt summed it up well: “It’s a good, versatile machine,” he offered, “particularly for contractors wanting to get into tight-access areas.” “The cut was really nice,” he continued. “We had the mulcher on the machine and we had cutting a little bit lower than normal to see how it’d cope, and it was terrific.” After some discussion it was agreed the EcoTeq was more comfortable than other stand-ons we’d tried, largely due to what was perceived to be a smoother ride. Matt had one other interesting hands-on observation. “It would take a little getting used to,

There are some really nice touches around the mower.

but there’s a light system in front of the operator. There are two lights. If you have green light, everything’s hunky-dory. Orange light means maybe not enough revs or an excessive load in heavy going, and the operator should slow down. “It’s a bit intuitive, and it’s quite good.”

Nice additions

So there you have it. The FURY was everything we’d hoped for and more. There were some really nice touches around the mower which we didn’t notice at first but become apparent as we settled in and started work. These included a phone holder, USB charge port and thigh pad – which sounds like a bit of a luxury, and so it was! It made a long session standing on the plate a very great deal more comfortable. The drive speed and blade speed could both be switched between high and low, and the touchscreen display made for very easy operation. All in all, we were very impressed. The FURY is clearly professional-grade equipment, quiet, compact and a pleasure to use. See all the details on the machine at ecoteq.com.au.

Zoomlion ZA14NJELI electric articulating boom lift and ZS1012ACLI electric scissor lift

Elevating work platforms, whether they’re scissor or boom lifts, are huge time savers and offer big increases in worker safety and efficiency. These two from Zoomlion are great examples.

I

t’s amazing how often a landscaping job calls for one or two people to work on a ladder of scaff. When it happens it’s a timeconsuming WH&S nightmare, especially if there’s lifting to be done. For the property-maintenance brigade, pruning and maintaining foliage has the same challenges, except the workers are often operating chainsaws, trimmers or brushcutters, which ramps up the risk in a big way. A ladder is sketchy proposition at the best of times, and scaffolding is great for stability – until it has to be moved. Then, suddenly, a huge amount of valuable work time is lost. The answer could well be an elevating work platform – an EWP. Harnessed to a stable platform and not dividing concentration between balance, grip and getting the job done, work can be carried out far more safely and efficiently. Not all EWPs a truck-mounted behemoths.

A centre layout, great structural rigidity, and small boom deflection make the Zoomlion ZA14NJE-LI a solid work platform. 38

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Zoomlion ZA14NJE-LI

The Zoomlion EWP range is fairly new to Australia, and our first impressions were of them being eye-catching outfits. We had two

to put through their paces, and the first was the ZA14NJE-LI, an articulating boom lift. Both machines comply with the CE/ ANSI/CSA Standards and being lithium-ion powered means both machines look very tidy. There are no protruding fuel fillers or exhausts, and all the cabling and hydraulics are routed to be out of sight and put of harm’s way. The main features of the ZA14NJE-LI include: • Centre layout, unparalleled structural rigidity, and minimal boom deflection • Advanced dual control system combining valve control and pump control delivers energy-saving, smooth and precise performance • Independent auxiliary power system providing an extra layer of assurance for applications • A high-capacity, lithium-ion battery with five-year warranty and eight-year lifespan guarantees maintenance-free for its whole life cycle • A standard charger providing for a short charging time of just seven hours • An accurate and efficient traveling AC drive www.landscapecontractor.com.au

system delivering robust power and stable control and maintenance-free experience.

Good job

The 16-metre platform work height is probably more than most landscaping jobs would call for, but for those times it’s needed, that big extension length will be a boon. As will the 230kg platform capacity, which will allow a pair of typically bronzed and burly Aussie landscapers to climb on board and guarantee the safety and productivity even further. Operation was smooth and the lift felt stable and solid, and we thought it a nice piece of gear at a very sharp price, backed up with a two-year warranty on parts and fiveyear warranty on the battery.

ZS1012AC-LI electric scissor lift

A lot of the things we found with the boom lift applied to the scissor lift. It’s a good-looking outfit, no pipes, tubes or cables hanging out anywhere, and it complies with the CE/ANSI/ CSA Standards. The main features of the scissor lift include: • A 10m platform height • An 11.8m work height

• 350kg platform capacity • 230Ah li-ion battery, 24v/3.3kw • An AC system offering higher working efficiency • IP67-rated waterproof protection on AC wheel motors, and • Lithium-ion batteries giving a long service life and increasing running time by 30 per cent. The ZS1012AC-LI is a better indoor or hard-surface option than the boom lift, but its narrow footprint and very compact size mean it’s easy to transport and it gives great access to confined areas. And the stability of the platform, even at full height, is very reassuring.

Choose to suit

Both Zoomlion lifts were good options to tackled the situations for which they were designed. It’s really up to the user to decide which will best suited to their needs. The Zoomlion range is available from the folks at UHI, and there’s plenty more information on the range, prices and accessories at unitedheavyindustries.com.au.

Hitachi and Horizon West A fast-growing Western Australian company has a history with Hitachi excavators which goes back to the company’s start – and continues today.

orizon West is made up of three complementary divisions specialising in commercial landscape construction, commercial irrigation systems and ongoing landscape and irrigation maintenance. Having kicked off in early 2007, the company has grown to where it is now. Hitachi excavator. From 2011 to now, it’s flown.”

Then and now

“When I started we had an open-cab ZX33U-5,” said Ball. “It was a really impressive machine. It did more than it should, if that makes sense. It certainly did more than what it was expected to do, and it was reliable. It just never broke down. Having excavators available in a range of sizes is a big plus for Horizon West, as Ball explained. “We tend to deal mostly with sand, limestone and caprock. There’s a lot of that in the coastal regions of WA. If we head east into the hills we deal with a lot of granite.

The Horizon West Hitachi excavators deal mostly with sand, limestone and caprock, and machine reliability is exceptional.

“The machines hold up really well. “If we’re working on clay they’re sufficiently powered, and by having that variety we’re able to jump from one to the next, depending on what’s required. If we come across caprock limestone we can throw the ZX135US-5 in there to do all the breakaway work, and then we’ll throw a smaller machine in there to tidy up.”

highly with the Horizon West operators. “We had the open-cab originally,” Ball related, “and that was good. But Western Australia’s pretty harsh. It’s hot and dusty in summer and wet in the winter, so it was nice when we went to the enclosed cabs with air conditioning and heating. That was nice. “The boys do try and be first into the ZX135US-5 or the loaders because they’re the biggest and have an air seat, but all the machines are pretty comfortable.” And if something does go wrong? “We have great relationships with Hitachi salespeople,” smiled Ball. “The sales and back-up support from Hitachi is exceptional. “If there’s ever a drama or something we

With LiuGong’s significant investment in after-market support, back up for the machines is strong.

Landscaping with LiuGong With a new mini excavator joining its family and the launch of a range of skid-steer loaders in early 2024, expanding construction equipment manufacturer, LiuGong, is set to have a line-up to suit all landscaping operators.

L

iuGong’s compact, zero-swing mini excavators have already had a strong impact in the market, in the same vein as the support for its large excavators and wheel loaders, and the latest 9057 model will complete the range of zero-swing excavators from 1.7 tonnes up to 5.5t. Jason Lyall, with the Australian distributors for LiuGong, said the mini excavators had attracted praise for their versatility, easy manoeuvrability in tight spaces, reliability and performance, as well as renowned affordability that has become synonymous with the brand. “They are easy machines to operate for a range of landscaping tasks, and, with their Yanmar engines and advanced hydraulic systems, they pack a punch and are very smooth and efficient,” said Jason. “They also feature internationally-sourced and wellknown components, as well as quiet, comfortable and spacious cabs.” Early next year, Jason said the LiuGong 9035 model would also join the new F Series machines, which deliver more power and torque at lower engine speeds for excellent fuel efficiency, and come with a host of great extra features.

New skid-steer loaders

The arrival of a new range of skid-steer loaders in early 2024, resulting in a complete landscaping line-up of skid steers and zero-swing mini excavators, is particularly exciting for the LiuGong Australia team. The skid-steer range will feature four models ranging from 3t up to 6t. They are powered by the reliable Yanmar, as well as Perkins, engines, providing excellent performance and fuel economy, and operators will be able to use various attachments with them. “The skid steers are compatible with all types of attachments and will handle any job in front of them,” Jason said. He also pointed out safety, incorporating high-strength protection systems, and easy maintenance were other big focus areas with both the skid steers and mini excavators.

Excellent back up

Another major factor driving market growth for LiuGong equipment throughout Australia has been the enhanced access to parts and excellent product support for machines, which will flow through to the new skid steers in 2024 and expanded mini-excavator range. “Operators are liking the reliability of the machines as well as the related support,” Jason said. “With the sheer volume of LiuGong machines now in the market and the significant investment in after-market support, operators can have confidence knowing they have very strong backup and support for their machines and their business.” For further information on the LiuGong zero-swing mini excavators and skid-steer loaders, visit liugongaustralia.com.au.

Case study

Pushing the boundaries to excel in safety, quality, and environmental sustainability through cutting-edge technology, Anric showed a keen interest in pursuing Hitachi’s ZE85.

Hitachi and Anric

In a pioneering move toward a more sustainable future in construction, Anric Group (Anric) recently made waves with its acquisition of a Hitachi ZE85 8.5 tonne 100-per-cent electric excavator from Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA).

T

he introduction of an electric excavator underlines HCA’s dedication to environmentally conscious practices within an industry traditionally characterised by raw power, and Anric – a leader in rail and civil applications – has made a strategic decision which places it at the forefront of innovation in industries transitioning towards a greater environmental sustainability approach.

Industry first

The ZE85 excavator is the first of its kind in its size category to be introduced in Australia. Pushing the boundaries to excel in safety, quality, and environmental sustainability through cutting-edge technology, Anric showed a keen interest in pursuing the ZE85, researching and engaging with HCA even before its official release to the Australian market. “The ZE85 has been a long time in the making and something we have wanted to do 48

No other OEM has managed to get a production machine to market that is well tested,” stated Anthony Spinozzi, Anric Group’s Operations Manager.

Options

The ZE85, a compact and agile 8.5-tonne electric excavator, is built upon the foundation of the highly efficient Hitachi ZX85USB-5.

Boasting a robust 40kW, it meets the same high-performance standards as its dieselpowered counterpart, however it achieves it with zero emissions and is 100 per cent electric. In contrast to machines powered by combustion engines, the electric powertrain demands zero maintenance, ensuring a commendable level of availability. Carbon-free, emission-free, and remarkably quiet, the L-ion battery of the ZE85 provides a continuous operating time of five-and-a-half hours with three batteries (there is space for an optional fourth battery to increase the usage time to in excess of seven hours). Equipped with a standard CCS fast-charge plug, the battery can achieve a charge from 0 per cent to 100 per cent in just 45 minutes. Even a quick 30-minute charge during a break can bring the machine’s battery level from 0 per cent to 80 per cent. If a CCS connection is not available on-site, the ZE85 can be trickle charged via an AC 400 V CEE 63-amp power supply (0 per cent to 100 per cent in 105 minutes), or via a 400 V CEE 32-amp power supply (0 per cent to 100 per cent in 210 minutes). The batteries can also be charged while the machine is in operation (known as dual mode), eliminating any downtime. The integrated telematics system provides the customer with valuable data.

Innovative technology

Anric believes the ZE85 excavator is best suited for large-tunnel infrastructure projects, utilising the machine not only above ground, but also within confined excavation boxes or tunnels. The decision is driven not only by the

Anthony further stated; “Anric takes on major infrastructure projects across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland so It will be interesting to see what project jumps at the opportunity to have an innovative game changing technology assist it in meeting its goals.”

A bright future

A dedicated client of HCA, Riccardo Spinozzi, the founder of Anric, acquired a Hitachi UH063 excavator back in 1984. This excavator, refurbished over time, now serves as a cherished collector’s item, standing as a testament to the brand’s enduring

reliability and longevity, proudly owned and showcased. Over the years, HCA and Anric have established a strong working relationship founded on trust and mutual respect, driven by shared goals and effective communication. “From the initial conversations of acquiring the ZE85, factory visits, and testing, to scheduling a production spot and configuring a build, HCA simplified the process, delivering on its commitments,” stated Anthony. The future looks very promising for Anric and HCA looks forward to supporting Anric with on-going machine service, back up and new-product development. Hedge trimmers and brushcutters

Husqvarna and Answerth & Sons Melbourne-based specialist hedge trimmers Answerth & Sons do amazing work with Husqvarna battery-powered equipment.

W

ith a team of ten, Answerth & Sons maintains and manages some of Melbourne’s most prestigious private properties, adding class and sophistication with precise trimming of all hedging in major landscape designs. Husqvarna battery prodcuts are the tools of choice for this elite company, and there are several good reasons for that.

Battery benefits

There are a few obvious advantages to using battery over petrol power, and Managing Director Steve Answerth is happy to relate how those things stack up in the real world. “In January 2023 we hit back-to-back days of over 30 degrees,” remembered the topiary artisan. “Having to work outdoors for up to 10 hours a day can be really taxing on our teams and their bodies. Husqvarna battery-powered equipment provides a lightweight option for our crew, increasing productivity and decreasing on-site injuries.” “We have many large properties we maintain with long stretches of hedges and some of these can take up to five days to complete,” he continued. “The 520iHE3 has been amazing for us as our go-to hedge trimmer. It’s so light we can get through day after day with less fatigue compared to if we were all using heavier petrol machines all day.”

Husqvarna battery-powered equipment provides a lightweight option, improving operator comfort which in turn increases productivity and helps to reduce the risks around onsite injuries. The total absence of fumes and low volume also figures highly in Answerth’s list of battery-powered plusses. “The petrol hedge trimmers we used to cut smaller hedges and topiary in the past would give off a lot of thick petrol fumes. Not only was breathing the fumes unpleasant, but on hot days there was a greater risk of burning the foliage on the hedges we were trimming. Since we’ve been using the 520iHD60 battery hedge trimmer, we don’t

have to worry about breathing in any fumes or burning the hedges. “And with the low-noise hedge trimmers, it means we can communicate with the client, or with each other, without having to stop and turn off machines like we do with petrol products.”

Specialist work

The Mornington Peninsula property featured here has been under Answerth’s care for about 30 years, and maintaining the immaculate presentation takes some specialist techniques. “One of the main difficulties maintaining the hedges here is them being so wide they require one or two of us to stand on top of the hedge and trim the tops as we walk along aluminium planks,” Answerth said. It takes a team of four or five a full day to maintain the property, and the favourite part of the job is the nature-strip cylinders. “They are incredibly unique,” beamed Answerth. “We don’t see many trees maintained like this, so it’s something different for us. Over time we’ve been straightening them up so they look perfect as you drive past or walk along the footpath that runs between them. “A lot of people walking past will stop to

Using Husqvarna battery-powered hedge trimmers has meant a substantial reduction in the amount of petrol the company uses. It’s cost effective and much better for the environment. make comment about how good they look, which is always nice to hear.”

Battery kit

Answerth & Sons need quality, reliable, precision equipment to maintain their incredibly high standards and execute their often intricate work. The tool kit for this particular job includes Husqvarna batterypowered trimmers, including: • 520iHE3 extension battery hedge trimmer • 520iHT4 telescopic battery hedge trimmer

• 520iHD60 hand-held battery hedge trimmer. Stephen offered a final thought on the value of battery-powered OPE: “One of the less spoken about benefits of the Husqvarna 520iHT4 telescopic battery hedge trimmer is that because it allows an operator to reach so much higher off the ground, it means less climbing up ladders for staff,” he said. “Obviously that’s significant for the health and safety of our team.”

No fumes or burning the hedges. For more information on the Husqvarna Battery handheld range head to Husqvarna.com or visit your dealer.

Eye on the industry Landscape architects love A1 Rubber because they can make parks unique.

A1 Rubber and Urban Play

Creating colourful, safe materials from disused tyres may be a big point in favour of Australian company A1 Rubber, but excellent service to clients is another big point in its favour.

1 Rubber converts over 7500 tonnes of recycled tyre rubber into various innovative flooring products every year. It holds thousands of tonnes of raw materials and finished products ready for immediate manufacture and dispatch, employing over 60 staff at its Brisbane factory and distribution warehouses in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. One business very happy to talk about its long-lasting association with A1 Rubber is Brisbane landscape architect and design company, Urban Play.

Serious fun

Urban Play is one of Australia’s most reputable playground and fitness companies, having completed over 8000 play and fitness spaces. From pocket parks to schools, shopping centres, water parks, outdoor gyms and destination playgrounds, every Urban Play space bears the signature stamp of innovative design, exceptional quality and value to last a lifetime. From design, supply and installation, to rubber, shade, street furniture, certification, maintenance and marketing, Urban Play’s expertise extends far beyond playground equipment. A very happy customer

“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with A1 Rubber,” recounted Barrett. “It’s nearly a 20-year history of incredible outdoor spaces, changing communities and encouraging Australians to get outside. “In that time Urban Play has created over 8000 outdoor spaces, most of the time using A1 Rubber products,” she smiled, giving the impression she’d like to personally try as many of those playgrounds as time would allow. From an ethical standpoint, Urban Play is rapt at A1 Rubber’s products giving the opportunity for upcycling an otherwise environmentally problematical material and putting it to good use, But there’s more to the relationship than that. “From a design point of view,” explained Barrett, “the beautiful thing about A1 Rubber with all its colour selections is the design is always different at every park, and we’re able to give each park that ‘uniqueness’ it deserves.

“Also, rubber can add another play dimension. It can be somewhere parents can sit, relax, and still engage in play.” The ease of installation and precertification of the shock pads make Urban Play’s design and construction work a lot easier. “The pre-certified shock pads are really important doing playgrounds,” said Barrett. “It gives the client ease of mind as well, and we at Urban Play know it’s going to be certified and it’ll be safe for the families that use it.

Part of the team

“We do a lot of rubber mounds, and we’ve done some incredible ones, thanks to the versatility of A1 Rubber’s products,” Barrett continued. “We created one in the shape of a whale’s tail, and we’ve done a ginormous rubber frog the kids can climb all over. A1 Rubber allows us to be really creative. A lot of landscape architects love it because they can craft their own designs and enhance the storytelling of the space.” And what about the ‘serious’ side of business? Is A1 Rubber a good outfit to do business with? “Really good logistically!” beamed Barrett. “They’re quite easy to deal with. They also have an online system where we can generate

Sometimes we get a park and we think, ‘That’s a beautiful design! How the hell we gonna do it?’ (laughs). Having access to the knowledge and expertise of A1 Rubber staff is great. A lot of them have been there for a while, and leveraging their experience and knowledge means we can push the boundaries of design and construction and can do things we’ve never done before.”

Eye on the industry Research suggests the presence of green, leafy streets is visually appealing and synonymous with prosperity and a high quality of living.

Cultivating urban spaces Arborgreen shares some insights on nurturing street trees for vibrant communities.

A

s we stroll down the avenues of our neighbourhoods, the character of our streetscapes speaks volumes about our communities. Whether it’s the fresh greenery of newly planted street trees in a growing development or the comforting embrace of a mature, leafy canopy in an established suburb, the visual tapestry of our streets reflects careful planning and ongoing maintenance. Research suggests the presence of green, leafy streets is visually appealing 70

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

and synonymous with prosperity and a high quality of living. This sentiment is reinforced by those considering species selection, ongoing maintenance practices, and programs dedicated to the health of our street trees.

Support for good health

While we may have previously touched on the myriad benefits of tree canopies – from improving mental health and property values to mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect –

it’s crucial to note Australia has witnessed a concerning 20 per cent loss of tree cover since 2000. With this in mind, we must acknowledge the significance of canopy cover in our urban environments. Fortunately, in recent years, councils nationwide have implemented ambitious programs to increase greenery, with targets ranging from 20 per cent to 50 per cent. Examples include the City of Onkaparinga’s goal to plant 100,000 street trees by 2037, the City of Prospect’s draft mission to boost

canopy cover by a minimum of 20 per cent by 2045, and the Yarra City Council’s plan to increase canopy coverage from 17.7 per cent to 21.25 per cent across the municipality by 2040. It’s also crucial to consider the stark contrast between trees thriving in natural environments and those recently planted along urban thoroughfares. Street trees contend with narrow soil strips, low-quality soil, pollution from passing vehicles, and even root barriers to protect nearby structures – creating a challenging environment for growth. Recognising these challenges, offering urban trees ample support for optimal health and longevity, is imperative. Let’s dive into best practices for planting, fertilising, and maintaining street trees to keep them in tip-top shape.

Planting

Choosing the right tree for the right spot is vital. Consider the space available and whether the tree chosen might have a suitable mature height and spread. Does the form of the tree

have a strong, single trunk, and is it free from dropping dangerous fruits or potentially slippery fruits and flowers? Consider the soil conditions and the need for soil ameliorants when planting. Potential obstructions might be present – plant trees with enough room for their roots to spread. Proper planting depth is crucial, and supporting the tree while the roots establish is critical. Regularly watering newly planted trees is essential for their establishment.

Fertilising

Street trees often face nutrient challenges in urban environments. Fertilising can help compensate for nutrient deficiencies. Fertilising regimes can vary from location to location, but a balanced, slow-release fertiliser will provide a steady supply of nutrients. Be cautious not to over-fertilise, as this can harm the tree. Regular soil testing can guide the specific nutrient needs of your street trees. As trees age they may not need as much fertiliser, although this is speciesdependent, with some mature trees requiring fertilisation. For example, lagerstroemia and

ulmus parvifolia can turn yellow in certain conditions if not fertilised.

Maintenance

Regular pruning is vital for street trees. Remove dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth. Light, frequent pruning to gently shape the tree is best, as it doesn’t encourage vigorous reshooting. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Watering is crucial, especially during dry spells. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep root growth, but water a few times a week during initial establishment. Look for signs of pests or diseases and take prompt action.

Arborgreen can help

By following these best practices we can ensure our street trees thrive, contributing to greener and healthier neighbourhoods for everyone to enjoy. To learn more about how Arborgreen can help your urban planting and civil projects succeed, call 1300 760 642 or visit arborgreen.com.au.

Quiet success

Electric landscaping and maintenance equipment is transforming the soundscape of contract mowing and facilities, with electric mowers reducing noise pollution – and noise complaints.

A

s the industry embraces electric technology for its environmental benefits, further benefits of the green fleet transition are now also becoming more understood. A big one for contractors working in noise-sensitive environments such as high-density residential areas, cemeteries, health facilities, education precincts and hospitality venues is sound. The reality is, internal combustion engines (ICE) are noisy, and this can restrict when and for how long equipment can be used in some environments, not to mention the risk to hearing health. Electric is significantly quieter – no louder than the hum of suburban traffic – and offers a substantial advantage for contractors and operators who enjoy not only the safety benefits, but the flexibility of working hours, and the substantially reduced risk of noise complaints.

Just quietly, EcoTeq

The implications for councils and contractors are profound. Some of the advantages of transitioning to EcoTeq electric mowers include: • Operators have the flexibility to start work earlier – and finish later – while still

complying with noise regulations. This enhances productivity and efficiency, and minimises the risk of noise complaints. • EcoTeq’s range of zero-turn mowers operates at sound levels considered safe without the requirement for hearing protection while still adhering to current

Work Health and Safety (WHS) guidelines (note: hearing protection is still recommended for extended or prolonged exposure to low-level noise as a precaution), and • Using low-noise electric commercial mowers provides contractors with greater flexibility to operate while still adhering to the stringent soundmanagement standards enforced by local councils across Australia.

A sound move

The significance of reducing operational noise extends beyond residential areas. Healthcare, aged-care, education, hospitality venues and other noisesensitive environments often place limitations on mowing hours, impacting productivity and the ability to meet contractual obligations. The low operational noise produced by electric mowers enables contractors to mow during times that may otherwise be limited at these sites. Mowing during the usual hours of operation typically also reduces the costs attached to overtime and out-ofhours work. EcoTeq’s quieter commercial alternatives offer mowing and landscape contractors the benefits of greater operational comfort, reduced WHS risk, minimised noise complaints, and enhanced productivity.

Speaking to LCM, Ritchie said, “I’m excited to join Landscaping Victoria and learn more about how we can continue to add value for our members. It’s clear LV already has an exciting range of opportunities and offerings, and I look forward to listening to, and working with, all our stakeholders to improve these even more and supporting as many practitioners as possible.”

Association news

LIAWA’s spring endeavours CEO, Christine Stanton, reflects on a productive season.

A

s the vibrant hues of spring fade into the striking fiery oranges and bold reds of our West Aussie summer, it’s an opportune moment to pause, reflect and extend gratitude to the pillars of support within the Landscape Industries Association of Western Australia (LIAWA). Recent months have proven to be a dynamic chapter for the association, brimming with activities and a collective spirit.

LIAWA Melbourne Cup lunch – a day at the races.

Great involvement

LIAWA can be proud of the contributions made by its board, staff, members, sponsors and the industry at large for their unwavering dedication, support and contributions to our environment and lifestyle. The canvas of the year unfurled with plenty of change, marked by changes in staff, new projects, invigorating events and the warm embrace of new members and friends joining our community. Since September a wave of fresh energy has enveloped LIAWA as a flurry of new members with diverse perspectives joined our ranks. The Trade Night in September stood as a testament to the industry’s innovation, as trade professionals and suppliers demonstrated their cutting-edge equipment, soils and soil improvers, and indispensable landscaping essentials. The wisdom shared by the WA Turf Growers’ Association was invaluable, updating us on stock offerings, plus insights into pest management and unveiling a novel carbon-capture option that may contribute to our collective commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the lively ambiance of the Melbourne Cup event offered a relaxed and fun ‘day at the races’. Collaborating with the Nursery & Garden Industry WA, we’ve diligently prepared an immersive program for the muchanticipated inaugural Southwest Forum now slated for 2024. Engaging with students and staff at South Metropolitan TAFE, our association contributed to nurturing the next generation of Waterwise Landscapers. In the background, two board members, Darren Seinor and Lisa Hall, and one retired board member Danny Murabito, have been laying the foundation for a skilled workforce of the future, working with TAFE and the Industry Advisory Group. 82

Paul Bangay highlight

Members were enriched by a session on business benchmarking, providing invaluable tips and tricks for operational excellence. Moreover, operational enhancements, such as the change in banking and the expansion of governance through the addition to the board, and progressing LIAWA’s strategic plan and risk-management plan, will fortify LIAWA’s infrastructure for a robust future. Adversity struck in the form of recent fires, impacting some of our members with loss and damage. However, our association swiftly rallied, extending support and connections wherever possible, epitomising the strength of our community bonds. The year culminated with the heartwarming festive bevies, fostering connections and celebrating collective achievements. An exceptional highlight was the opportunity to showcase Paul Bangay’s A Life in Garden Design at his book launch at The UWA Club, an event that resonated with the artistic soul of our industry. Paul gave tips about the trends in garden design, choice of plants and colour schemes, and he pointed to a change from formality to now the ‘wild’ approach. There is much to learn about Paul Bangay, his changing direction in landscape design and with his eleventh book now available and plans for a twelfth. LIAWA’s December newsletter will dive deeper into the Paul Bangay’s views and projections.

2023 done

As we wrap up the year, we’re truly grateful for the incredible dedication of our members and the unity that’s been driving us forward. Looking ahead to 2024, LIAWA is gearing up to tackle new challenges and dive into exciting ventures within the ever-evolving landscape industry. Together, we’ll keep growing, learning and thriving, guided by our spirit of collaboration and shared purpose that defines our association. Get ready, because a survey is heading your way soon, members! Your input and feedback matter to us as we aim to make our community even better. Keep an eye out for it and engage in your association to make strides in the world of landscaping! If you’d like to learn more about LIAWA, please contact Christine Stanton, Executive Officer at liawaexec@landscaping.net.au or call 0497 120 519.
