From the editor
Hello again!
I was going to try and come up with a really posh and professional tone for this introduction, but I’m afraid that’d be like putting a Jaguar badge on a Leyland P76. Not only would it not make any difference to the car’s performance, it wouldn’t fool anyone.
The reason I’m striving for a better presentation is I’ve been chatting to the CEOs of the landscape associations and I’m feeling as though I’m a little rough around the edges.
One of the first people I met when I started on the title a few months ago was Jodie Dean of The Landscape Association. I felt as though we got on well, and a work colleague and I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the annual TLA awards evening, where Jodie proved a capable and welcoming host.
I’ve also had a few phone conversations with Megan Flower of the LVML, and they’ve been very pleasant and enjoyable as well. Megan is clearly a manager in motion and focussed on getting things done – my kind of person. I wasn’t at the Victorian annual
awards, but I’m sure, with Megan at the helm, it was a beautifully presented event which reflected well on everyone involved. It certainly looked that way in the story which ran in the last issue.
And finally, over in West Aussie, I’d been speaking to Matt Lunn of LIAWA, and as far as cheerful, friendly, pleasant people to speak to, Matt would be a hard act to follow…except Matt has recently moved on to another executive role, and his replacement, Christine Stanton, is every bit as cheerful and pleasant to speak to in every way.
These people have a few things in common. They’re in positions of great responsibility and they’re all extremely influential within the Australian landscaping industry. I bet none of them have a lot of time to spare, and I expect there’s a constant line of people demanding their attention.
And yet, they all make time to chat to a journo they hardly know, and they’re all very open and approachable about what’s going for their associations and within the landscaping industry.
It’s not as though there’s any need for them to make time for me. There are promotional and publicity people within their organisations specifically for that purpose, and I know that. I try not to intrude on the CEOs’ work days. But somehow, they still end up on the phone, and I’m always impressed. I’m impressed with their obvious care for the landscaping industry and the people in it, I’m impressed at how they maintain a professional and polished presentation – even when sharing a quiet chuckle at something – and I’m impressed at how, no matter what their workload, there always seems to be time for people like me.
It’s no doubt those three set a very high standard in personal presentation, and they’ve inspired me to try and lift my game.
I’m going to start by chucking my dungarees in the washing machine right now.
I hope nobody comes into the office while I’m sitting here in my undies.

Prioritising quotes sucks, especially when you are busy, but it will ensure a strong pipeline of work.
Business and finance
How to keep the pipeline full when the work drops off.
It’s predicted 2023 will see a decline in the volume of work, so we need to hone our winning skills to feed the pipeline and keep our share of the market. Dropping your profit margin is NOT the answer. The only way to win and stay profitable is with customer service.
Straight off the bat it is most important you make a good impression. Answer your enquiries swiftly. Don’t let the client wait more than 24 hours to hear back from you. I’m sure you’ve heard it all before, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to return that call promptly. It’s a simple rule, and it doesn’t take any longer than returning the call three days later, however it does build a lot of trust with the client.
Second, build on that good rapport with a prompt quote. Prioritising quotes sucks, especially when you are busy, but it will ensure a strong pipeline of work. Not only does it build on the trust and reliability you’ve gained from the initial enquiry, but it ensures you are pricing enough work to keep the pipeline full. When the work dries up it’ll be hard to quickly win projects, and it’ll take longer to get them across the line, so make sure the outstanding quote pile is high.
When you do the site visit don’t be afraid to impart expert advice and information for
WORDS: ANNA TURNER
free. It may sound counterintuitive, but giving expert advice not only builds trust in you, it shows you have more skills and experience than your competitors. Everyone wants to award the contract to the smartest person, especially if he/she has been so helpful solving problems.
Show your client the value you are offering. Don’t focus on the dollars, unless you are a LOT more expensive it’s not going to matter. Instead focus on the extra value you are offering. Where possible, deliver the quote in person, so you can run through it and explain the value of each item. When a quote is explained in detail (I’m not talking about a breakdown of individual material costs; I’m talking about what/when/why/how you are going to do the work) the client is far more likely to see the value in it and not focus on the cost so much.
On a side note, I am a big fan of presenting detailed, itemised quotes (again, I’m not talking about a breakdown of materials and labour) for the following reasons:
• They build the client’s confidence in the quote and in you
• They cover you against excluded work (you and the client both know what’s included and excluded. No grey areas), and
• They show professionalism. The client is
unlikely to show the quote to a competitor, which is an illegal act anyway.
Make sure the client understands all the value you have to offer:
• Prompt and attentive customer service –demonstrate this with your actions
• Outstanding workmanship – refer the client to your Instagram page or put them in touch with a satisfied customer. Make sure they understand quality workmanship takes time
• Reliability – show up when you intend to. If you are going to be late, even by 15 minutes, let the client know. That way they know you are a person of your word, they’re more likely to trust you will get the job done promptly and not leave it unfinished for months, and
• You’re an expert in your field – help the client solve problems and give free advice during onsite meetings.
Good value for money is a good job done at a reasonable price, not the cheapest job. Most clients know this and are looking for good value for money, not a cheap job that comes with headaches attached. And, a happy customer will recommend you to more clients looking for ‘value for money’.
This should keep the good enquiries flowing in your direction.
Installing pools, spas or hot tubs is an involved process given the large amount of government regulation.
Pool and spa barriers
More and more landscapers are building and installing swimming pools, swim spas and spas or hot tubs to clients’ backyards. It’s an involved process that can take some months given the number of trades involved and the large amount of government regulation surrounding the efficacy of the build and the compliance requirements, especially around the barriers. Although there are different pool-fence legislations in states around Australia, the whole idea is to keep children under the age of five years from drowning or suffering serious brain injury. Landscapers can help mitigate risks by knowing the most common causes of non-compliance.
Nomenclature
Young children are at a very high risk of drowning. They are naturally curious and attracted to water. However, they are too young to understand the concept of danger, making active adult supervision vital.
‘Supervision’ ranges from being in the water, within arms’ reach, and actively supervising children aged up to four years, actively
supervising from the water’s edge for those aged five to 10 years, and regularly checking up on those aged 11 to 14 years.
Between July 2002 and June 2017, 91 children aged under four years drowned in private swimming pools, and of those pools
• 26% had no barrier
• 38% had a faulty fence or pool gate, and
• 24% had the pool gate propped open.
According to the NSW Swimming Pools Act 1992, a swimming pool (indoor and outdoor) is a structure that is capable of
Children can easily use objects adjacent to the pool fence to assist them in reaching latches, so ensure your clients are aware they should keep the area clear of such potential hazards at all times.
Landscapers can reduce the risks of death or lifelong injury to young lives and the impact on families.

being filled with water to a depth greater than 300mm; and designed and used for recreational aquatic purposes. It includes a spa pool, hot tub and swim spa. So, fish ponds, decorative water features and water dams are intentionally excluded from this legislation.
Gates
In swimming pools, the pool gate is the most common point of failure.
Unless a gate is installed correctly it can lead to disaster. First, the arc of swing of the gate must be away from the water. This is
because it makes it harder for young children to get into a pool because they can use their weight to push a gate forward.
Legislation in all states requires all pool gates self-close and self-latch. Gate hinge springs not wound up enough when installed will not shut a gate when that gate is resting on the latch.
TIP: Keeping the pool gate propped open will cause a failure of the hinge springs.
NB: Take care when selecting the gate type and position within the barrier to ensure the wind does not impact on the self-closing and
Ensure the gate is hung squarely. Ensure the posts on either side have no movement at all because it will pull the latching mechanism out of alignment, which means manual force will be needed to close the gate, making it non-compliant.
TIP: If hanging a gate at an intersection with another fence, don’t rely on the adjacent fence post’s rigidity.
Legislation dictates latches should be out of reach of young children and so all states set the minimum height to be at least 1500mm from finished ground level.
Be aware children can easily use objects adjacent to the pool fence to assist them in reaching latches, so ensure your clients are aware they should keep the area clear of such potential hazards at all times. Some states legislate this aspect and distances vary. Common sense should prevail.
Latches become mis-aligned or result in broken springs over time, hinges may rust, and posts may shift. So when carrying out a pool-renovation project don’t be tempted by your clients’ budgetary concerns to install any existing gate mechanisms to keep costs down.
Certify every time
The next biggest safety concern comes from neighbours’ children jumping the boundary fence and into the pool.
MINIMIZE PASSES, GUESSWORK, AND HEADACHES.
NEVER IDLE
It’s all about doing more with less. So we did, with the widest range of machines equipped with grade management tech to suit your job needs today, and tomorrow. From 2D Laser Control to fully-integrated SmartGrade™, it allows any operator to grade with precision. Reducing passes, labor costs, and dreaded rework, to ultimately boost your bottom line.
Since we have no control over the adjoining neighbour’s property, owners are required by law to ensure they mitigate all risks relating to the boundary fence poolside. So if a neighbour’s child does manage to clamber up to the top of the boundary fence –which is also acting as a pool fence – ensure there are no handholds or footholds poolside to help them get down. Rails on timber fences and art works on any fence may assist young children in their efforts to climb down into the pool.
Depending on when the pool was constructed, different legislation in different states can impact on the height of boundary fences acting as pool fences. For example, in Western Australia from 1 May, 2016, barriers to new swimming and spa pools are required to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA). Victoria and NSW have three concurrent legislations that all have different fence heights based on the year of construction.
The easiest way forward is to seek out a private certifier/swimming-pool inspector or the clients’ local council for advice about compliance requirements for each and every job.
NB: The BCA does not allow the use of a door of the residential building as part of the barrier to an outdoor pool. It has come to pass that this legislative change has been adopted by other states and will impact many pool owners because previously those same owners may have a door which opens directly onto the pool deck, and they complied with the legislation current at that time. Renovations though that you may be engaged on, means that that same legislation no longer applies, and they will have to permanently eliminate this access or a put up pool barrier.
This can be a costly and most inconvenient outcome.
IMPORTANT: Different authorities within different states apply different percentages to the replacement or redesign of a pool barrier to determine what legislation they will apply to your job. If you are undertaking a pool renovation, avoid this minefield and use the latest legislation for all your measurements and for when you quote the job, no matter your state or territory.
Standards
Another common non-compliance is when landscapers build and install outdoor kitchens, clotheslines, gazebos with BBQs, or a teenagers’ sleepover space – all within the confines of the swimming pool.
Nothing non-ancillary to the operation of the pool is allowed within the barrier fencing. So the pool-filter equipment, creepy crawly and chemicals may stay. Sun lounges and day beds are okay too because it means adults are likely supervising any children in the pool.
Spa pools and hot tubs need to be secure from access by young children without adult supervision. The surest way is to ensure spa pools and hot tubs have working lockable lids which don’t allow any openings greater than 100mm at any point on all sides.
However, some local councils require fences around swim spas even though they have working, lockable lids. The jury is out on whether this is overkill. It is certainly not mandated in legislation.
If you are quoting strata premises with shared recreational water facilities or a commercial swim school, be sure to engage with a private swimming-pool inspector/ certifier or a council pool inspector to ensure you get it right from the start. The same rules and application of the BCA, applicable Australian Standards and Regulations may never carry across from one job to another.
All swimming pools and all types of spas and hot tubs must have a fully compliant resuscitation sign which is readable from at least three metres within the bounds of the pool or on the wall of the spa, and preferably at the shallow end and down low so it can be easily used by a local hero to save a young life in an emergency.

When it comes to pet-friendly landscapes, dogs are at the top of the list for consideration.
Aownership rates in the world, with an estimated 25 million pets being housed across the nation. It probably comes as no surprise dogs and cats rank as number one and two respectively on the top-10 list of most popular pets in the country. So the type of pet a client has will ultimately dictate overall garden design and plant selection that will allow pets to engage in the garden, without risking their health and wellbeing and avoiding potential destruction of the garden itself.
Garden maintenance must also be considered when it comes to keeping pets safe. The use of insecticides, herbicides and fertilisers should be carefully considered. Many organic fertilisers, soil conditioners and mulches are formulated from animal manures such as chicken manure which are very attractive to dogs and cats, but which, if consumed, may be lethal or cause significant health issues. Maintenance

and provide our four-legged friends with a stimulating place to play. Installing a small splash pond for those hot summer days is easy with a hard-plastic kiddie’s pool, or a sprinkler dogs can run through while playing fetch, and of course plenty of shade to escape the sun. A doghouse under a tree is ideal. Providing a pet window in boundary fences can give dogs an opportunity to watch the outside world while staying safely enclosed. In smaller gardens it may not be possible to provide the dog with their own play zone. If that’s the case, installation of protective barriers in the form of fencing around delicate plantings such as vegetable gardens and flower beds is an option. Alternatively, growing plants in raised beds will prevent pets from digging and marking areas which can kill tender plants and turf. Another way of preventing dogs from ripping out new plantings in a landscape is to increase the size of plants installed into garden beds. Dogs are less likely to pull on a larger plant than one that comes from 150mm container. Where there is conflict between the size of plants installed – that is, small pot sizes –and the tendency for a dog to rip out newly
installed plants, place protection barriers around plants until they are established. Tomato cages are ideal for this.
Dogs are territorial and will often patrol their patch by walking the same path. This can lead to damaged turf which can be overcome by installing paving along the perimeter of the garden where dogs patrol.
Use light-coloured pavers to reduce the heat they retain, or round river pebbles or a soft mulch material to help protect paws from radiant heat in the pavers. Enveloping spaces in the design by using playful geometry in garden beds and utility areas can provide a stimulating environment for dogs to engage in.
The purr-fect pet
As urban gardens become much smaller in overall square meterage, there has been a move towards having smaller pets that ‘fit the space’, such as cats and smaller dog breeds. Cats often polarise people as they are able
to free roam in many local-government areas which can have devastating consequences on local wildlife populations. Show me a cat owner who says, “My pet does not kill wildlife,” and I’ll show you an ignoramus. Designing a landscape to provide an active
space for cats to explore without causing damage to the local wildlife population can be achieved by installing cat runs or cat enclosures. Cat runs and enclosures can provide a safe, interesting environment for cats to play and climb, eliminating the concerns with wildlife, traffic and other potential hazards. They can be incorporated into the landscape without being too intrusive, depending on the type of run or enclosure installed, and the materials they are constructed from.
With some careful design considerations, a run or enclosure can also offer some alternative scope to plant installation that may not have otherwise been available. For example, runs or enclosures constructed of timber and galvanised mesh may be suitable for climbing plants that provide shade protection for the felines and soften the aesthetic of the structure. Many enclosures are available in modular form which allows for greater scope of design into the landscape. They can also be modified to fit existing site features such as trees and large rocks, or where there are level changes in the landscape.
Smaller runs and enclosures also provide flexibility with many collapsible models
Commercial Power + Maximum Comfort
constructed from heavy-duty netting that still provides all the benefits of a permanent installation without the hefty price tag. Cat runs and enclosures can also be adapted for other types of pets, such as ferrets, chickens, and rabbits.
Pet-friendly plantings
When choosing pet-safe plants there are no hard and fast rules. It should be noted, though, that there are many common garden plants that can be toxic to pets if ingested. Fortunately, most pets won’t consume plants in the garden, however, poisoning may occur if a bored dog rips out plants or consumes seeds or fruits of certain species.
Cats are particularly susceptible to poisoning from Lilium spp. and ingesting any part of these plants can be lethal. There are also those plants that can cause dermal reactions in a range of pets which should be avoided. Tradescantia spp. (Wandering Jew) should be controlled in plantings as a weed species to avoid contact with pets.
Many plants common to urban landscapes can pose a potential risk to pets, the list shown here is by no means exhaustive, but does provide guidance for designers on some

Compaction in gardens
Greetings reader. During our last chat we dealt with addressing the challenges of deep- or sub-soil compaction. This issue we’ll cover addressing compaction after the garden has been planted and within established landscapes.
Questions
We’ve popped in to check on the performance of the garden and we find some plants are growing to our expectation while
others are struggling. We’ve checked all the treasures are receiving the same amount of light, the appropriate amount of water and their root balls have no sign of hydrophobia. The irrigation system or hand-watering regime is effective.
So what’s going on?
Are they getting too much water, or too little? Are there puddles of water sitting or areas that look to have been wet?
Let’s probe the soil with an irrigation flag, a
screwdriver, a garden fork or anything that’s long and strong enough.
How does it feel?
Is it an effort to insert the probe?
Let’s have a careful dig near the slower growers.
Is there new root growth?
Is it drier or wetter than the soil around the performers?
Let’s dig some small pot holes in the troubled areas and do some drainage tests (I’m a fan of putting the removed soil into a bin or bucket as it keeps the surface looking consistent and neat).
Blast! It’s an effort to dig.
Bummer! The water isn’t draining.
Struth! The area is compacted.
What do I do?
If the ground is very wet, carefully step out of the area and start making a plan.
If we do nothing, it’s likely the problem won’t fix itself. The progressing plants are already a third larger than the strugglers. The inconsistent growth will only compound over time so we need to intervene.
In smaller or isolated areas, the effort might only require some hand tools and perhaps a 16kg jackhammer and clay spade.
Remove the mulch and get cracking. Literally. The trick is to break or crack the
compacted area open and break the soil to crumble into particles ideally no smaller than a frozen pea and no larger than a golf ball. For shrubs and perennials, depths of 30cm-40cm will be fine. If we’re working with trees we should be aiming for depths of 60cm or more. If the levels of organic matter are low, tickle some compost and gypsum through the top 15cm. The compost will help to keep the soil in better health and increase water- and nutrient-holding capacity, while the gypsum will provide a dose of always-appreciated calcium.
If the soil has a high clay content, you might find the plants are now sitting low from the surrounding soil that’s been bulked up. These will need to be carefully lifted and planted to correct levels.
Keep in mind to minimise cultivating any woody-type mulch into the soil. The last thing we want is to create an issue with nitrogen drawdown. Remember to use planks or plywood when working or walking on easily compacted soil. Keep off it when it’s very wet, too.
How did this compaction occur?
It’s often the case that our workmates have compacted the soil during the mulching works or people have been cutting corners by walking through the garden.
Sometimes, the soil will have that type of texture that compacts easily.
Remember, try to keep off a freshly planted garden. Walk on plywood sheets and set out simple barriers that indicate to other trades and people to stay off the garden!
When it comes to surface compaction, turf is a great example to refer to.
Obviously excess foot traffic, busy kids and animals can be the culprits, especially on poorly prepared soils with high clay content. Another contributor rarely considered is the effect ride-on mowers can have, especially on areas with steeper grades. Consider the extra load the tyres are putting on the turf when the equipment is driving down the steep grade. The compacted or worn section is usually at the base where the grade starts to level out. To avoid putting this area under continual pressure, consider changing your
angle of mowing. Perhaps drive across the grade rather than constantly loading the same area of lawn. Keeping your lawns longer will also reduce compaction. The longer leaf blade encourages a deeper root system, and the thicker vegetation above the ground naturally helps to spread out loads.
Seasonal grasses
Once again, the objective of decompaction is to encourage air back into the soil. In small areas, a fork driven back and forth into the ground may be sufficient to loosen things up. For larger areas, it’ll need a machine.
Core aerators can be easily hired and are by far the most effective machines to deal with shallow compacted layers of depths less than 100mm. This equipment drives hollow tines into the soil which then removes plugs of soil out of the ground. The gaps created by physically removing plugs of soil reduces the bulk density of the profile and allows air and water to better enter the soil. Top dressing with a compatible sand or compost is usually performed after aerating has been undertaken. The benefits of using the corer machine is the plugs removed can then be raked around, broken up and essentially used as the top dress. Being the same soil type as what’s in the lawn makes it a compatible material to dress with.
Spiking and slicing are two other methods that don’t physically remove any soil from the lawn. These can actually compact the soil over time. Although the fork I suggested works in the same principle, it’s fine to do it
When it comes to surface compaction, turf is a great example to refer to. This section looks good, but is there a slight indication in the middle? Do some testing.Care needs to be taken to avoid cutting roots thicker than 40mm.
occasionally on smaller areas and better than not doing anything at all.
Always check for irrigation sprinklers prior to embarking on lawn aeration.
Warm-season grasses such as couch and buffalo are aerated from spring through to the end of summer. Cool-season grasses such as fescue and ryes are aerated from the middle of autumn through to early spring.
Beneath trees
Another approach to alleviate deeper lawn compaction is to engage verti drain equipment. This is drawn behind a tractor and pushes solid tines into the soil profile to depths beyond 250mm. When the tines are removed, the surrounding soil is fractured by the exiting tine. The deep fracturing of the soil enables plenty of air and water to enter and very useful depths. You’ll see these machines in action on sports fields and golf courses.
The final challenge we have in this chat is to remedy compaction beneath trees. There are a few options which can help the plant overcome the restrictive problem and allow their roots to access a much larger soil volume:
• Vertical mulching is the process of drilling numerous 100mm-150mm diameter holes through the compacted layer and filling with a coarse material such as perlite, vermiculite, river sand or compost. This enables air and water to deeply access the profile. Roots will naturally grow into these amended columns where they can gradually break up the adjacent compacted areas. Care needs to be taken not to damage roots thicker than 40mm. The
• of trenches up to 200mm wide, as long as possible, and deeper than the compacted layer. The pattern resembles bicycle spokes and generally consists of between six and 10 trenches. The excavated soil is amended then backfilled. As you can imagine, the roots leap in and take advantage of the looser aerated soil. Additional trenches are dug each year so the tree gradually adjusts to the improved conditions. Once again, care needs to be taken to avoid cutting roots thicker than 40mm. Although it’s inevitable you will accidently find and hit these roots, the health outcomes for the tree from the increased soil volume will outweigh the immediate insult they will
experience. Just don’t go cutting everything you find. When you do fracture or cut a root, be sure to cut the damaged section with a saw. Leaving a split or fractured root invites disease and dieback of the damaged root;
• Finally, we can remedy the compaction with an air spade. This tool dislodges soil by firing compressed air into the soil profile. It’s noisy and messy, but is least-damaging to tree roots. The process is undertaken in the same bicycle-spoke pattern. Once the compacted layer is blown out, the cavities can be backfilled with amended soil. It’s a specialised tool that is best used by a capable contractor.
That’s about it on the perils of compaction. Next time we’ll discuss another soil insult known as layering.
Flipscreen screening buckets
Easily sort and separate any material on site.
F lipscreen screening buckets are quickly becoming a popular tool in the landscaping industry, offering a range of benefits that can save time, money, and effort. These innovative buckets can be attached to any carrier, and are designed to quickly and easily sort and separate any material on
Benefits
One of the main benefits of using a Flipscreen screening bucket is the ability to repurpose native land, saving on material purchases. This can be particularly useful when working on large landscaping projects, such as creating new gardens or parks. By using
topsoil, mix seed mixes, and even wash gabion rocks on site, all of which can help to reduce costs and save time.
Another benefit of using a Flipscreen screening bucket is the ability to mix concrete on site with a five-minute changeover to the mixing plate with internal agitators. This can be a huge advantage when working on projects that require a large amount of concrete, such as retaining walls or pathways. By being able to mix the concrete on site, you can save on transportation costs and avoid the need for a separate concrete mixer.
Versatile
Another important feature of the Flipscreen screening bucket is the optional brush kit. This kit is designed to clear the mesh on every rotation, making it extremely useful for screening wet or sticky materials such as clay. The brush kit helps prevent mesh clogging, allowing for smooth and efficient screening, even in challenging conditions. This feature is especially useful for landscaping projects that involve working with wet or clay-based soils, as it ensures the screening process is not hindered by the material’s consistency.
Overall, the brush kit is an invaluable addition to the Flipscreen screening bucket,
making it even more versatile and suitable for a wide range of landscaping projects.
Efficient
Flipscreen screening buckets have the ability to change screens in under five minutes, on site, with no tools and only one operator. These screens range in standard sizes from 6mm to 300mm, with custom mesh sizes made as well. This means you can easily switch between different size screens to suit the specific needs of your project, whether it’s screening for small pebbles or large rocks. This feature also enables to you to sort and separate different types of materials at the same time, such as topsoil and rock, making it easier to create a clean slate with maximum debris out rapidly.
Another important benefit of using a Flipscreen screening bucket is the fact you only handle material once. This eliminates the need for multiple passes, which can be timeconsuming and labour-intensive. Additionally, a Flipscreen bucket can screen straight into a truck, which allows you to dump your oversize wherever needed, and reduces the cost of tip fees. This not only saves time but also money.
Furthermore, the ability to lay topsoil easily and blend your own garden mix with a
Flipscreen bucket can be a huge benefit for landscaping projects. By being able to create your own garden mix, you can ensure the soil is of the highest quality and tailored to the specific needs of your project. This can also help to improve the overall appearance and health of your garden.
A valuable landscaping tool
In conclusion, Flipscreen screening buckets are a versatile and valuable tool in the landscaping industry.
They offer a range of benefits, including the ability to repurpose native land, create
saleable topsoil, mix seed mixes, wash gabion rocks on site, mix concrete on site, change screens in under five minutes, handle material only once, screen straight into a truck, and create a clean slate with maximum debris out rapidly. These features not only save time but also money. Therefore, if you are in the landscaping industry, a Flipscreen screening bucket should be a consideration in your toolbox.

Ditch Witch SK skid steers
Landscaping often involves the need for compact machinery which will be kind to the worksite, and a versatile stand-on loader is often the answer. But moving earth, stone, aggregates and heavy loads requires tough, reliable machinery.
Wayne Cox, NSW/ACT Territory Manager for Ditch Witch CEA, recommends the SK range for all types of work from landscaping to construction.
Designed for small-scale landscape and irrigation jobs, the Ditch Witch SK600 mini skid steer has a narrow frame for better manoeuvrability in tight, compact spaces.
The small, yet mighty, machine delivers industry-leading power to the attachment for enhanced jobsite productivity and versatility.
A redesigned, ergonomic operator’s station with optimised hydraulics offers the smoothest ride in the industry so operators stay comfortable and productive for long hours on the job.
Built for heavy-duty operation, the construction-grade design improves machine durability and longevity and overall machine ROI.
“The SK is a true construction machine,” said Wayne.
“People buy an SK for the narrow access and the range of attachments,” he said. “There’s around 15 different attachments available for an SK machine.
“Also, the SKs are easy to step on and step off. They’re great for landscaping and for anyone who’s constantly in and out of machines all day. Where a sit-down machine
can be a bit of a killer on the operator’s back, the SK machines are the way to go.”
It’s not only the versatility of the SK Ditch Witches that’s so impressive. The range of machines means there’s an ideal unit for just about every application.

Electric Wheel Loaders from Wacker Neuson
Zero emissions, 100 per cent power.
In 2015, Wacker Neuson presented the WL20e – the first wheel loader with an electric drive. The battery-powered wheel loader with a bucket capacity of 0.2 cubic metres was consistently developed further and is now available with a high-quality AGM battery, characterised by particularly easy handling and low-maintenance effort.
The abbreviation AGM stands for ‘Absorbent Glass Mat’; with this type of battery, the electrolyte is bound in a fleece made of glass fibres, making it a leak-proof system. The new technology offers additional benefits. It is less sensitive to temperature and develops little heat when charging and during operation, which results in an increased electric power output.
Another significant advantage of the new wheel-loader generation is its ‘on-board’ battery charger with 230V, which was integrated into the machine. With this, the battery can be charged easily with a cable at any plug receptacle, making operating the WL20e wheel loader easier in everyday construction work. Flexible interim charges have become more efficient due to higher power currents and an improved power draw. In addition, the battery is virtually maintenance-free. Customers who already have a WL20e electric wheel loader can convert to the AGM technology, for example if a battery replacement is due.
Performance
The performance parameters of the fully electrically driven WL20e wheel loader correspond to those of the diesel-powered model, and even exceed these in some aspects, such as the tipping load, which reaches up to 1509kg due to the weight of the battery. If the battery of the WL20e wheel loader is fully charged, a work application of up to five hours under full load is possible –enough time for typical applications, such as loading and transporting goods over short distances in a working day. The operator can always see the battery’s charge status, as it is easily visible on the display. The modern battery technology and its emission-free drive system make the wheel loader perfect for applications in urban areas as well as indoors, such as in greenhouses, parking garages or for building restoration. The electric wheel loader has also proven itself in public facilities and hospitals, due to its
very low noise emissions, and it also offers economic advantages with operating cost savings of around 40 per cent over the course of the machine’s service life.
Compact
With a height of 2.25m and a width of just over 1m, low and narrow passages and transport on a trailer are no problem for the Wacker Neuson WL20e wheel loader – however, the operator’s protective canopy is too high to pass through very low clearance heights of less than 2m. Wacker Neuson has already offered the fold-down operator’s canopy EPS (Easy Protection System) for several years, which is prepared for a low-clearance height in just a few easy steps. Even more convenient is EPS Plus, a hydraulically lowerable protective canopy which operators can adjust from their
seat. EPS Plus solves the problem of low clearance heights and makes work much easier, especially if very low clearance heights have to be passed through repeatedly. EPS Plus saves a tremendous amount of time as the machine operator does not have to exit the vehicle to lower the canopy. EPS Plus is offered for the WL20e and WL20 compact wheel loaders.
The WL20e electric wheel loader is part of Wacker Neuson’s zero-emission series, which also includes the 803 dual power and the EZ17e battery excavator, and two batterypowered rammers. A track dumper and a wide range of zero-emission machines are to be launched soon.

UHI E12 Electric Excavator
equipment available for operators looking to go green and leave refuelling and servicing diesel engines behind.
UHI’s E12 excavator is a 1.2-tonne electric machine which is going to tick all the boxes for a wide range of users looking for a quiet, zero-emission excavator with a small footprint for working in tight environments, especially indoors or in areas with little or no ventilation. Fumes are just no longer an issue.
When it comes time to start a day’s work the 48V/200Ah batteries offer six hours runtime and will charge overnight (10 hours). The bucket has a 120kg capacity and the ZANEDA main pump produces 18L/min. An Eaton travel motor pushes the machine along, and although not a fast machine for its size, it will suit many operators with its price tag of $18,990.
The 48V/200Ah batteries offer six hours runtime and will charge overnight (10 hours).
Access all areas
To start with the overall dimensions of the E12 are 3127x950(1170)x2195mm, and combined with the bucket digging force of 9.7kn and arm digging force of 8.6kn, the result is an impressive little machine that will access areas not a lot of other machines can.
We enlisted the help of landscaper Kelly Burton, from KBL Landscapes, who put the E12 through its paces. Kelly was keen to share his thoughts on the UHI.
“I was impressed with the lifting capacity and breakout of this machine,” he said. “I managed to lift several logs and various other materials that I didn’t think would be possible with this machine. The six-hour run time would suit a lot of tradies, landscapers and workers looking to use the machine for demo inside residential projects when ripping out bathrooms and kitchens.
“It would also be ideal for plumbers dealing with tight access. They would love this little machine.”
But Kelly had more to say.
“Being electric it doesn’t handle as smoothly as a petrol or diesel machine, but I’m sure as these machines progress with each generation that smoothness will come. When you think about the benefits in terms of there basically being next to no maintenance and servicing, it’s a small price to pay.
“I know these UHI machines have a solid following with hobby farmers and users needing to work in sensitive areas, like near schools and day-care centres where noise and fumes are an issue, and this E12 will be a
great option for a lot of operators. There’s no doubt electric machines like this are the way of the future and we will only be seeing more and more in the years ahead.”
The wrap up
When you factor in that this machine comes with nine attachments (multiple buckets, log grab, auger, and rake) plus a three-year parts warranty, and that the first 12 months include parts and labour, the E12 is going to appeal to a lot of users looking to step into an affordable excavator of this size.
With stock also being a bit of a problem for many suppliers, the fact the entire UHI range has excellent availability is also a great thing for potential customers ready to buy.
All in all, the UHI E12 delivers significant value and performance for its price point, and all the benefits of being an electric machine only add to the appeal of this little workhorse.

Wacker Neuson EZ25 excavator
The zero tail EZ25 easily works in confined spaces or near structures, walls and obstacles. A spacious operator’s platform and split canopy offers many comfort features and functions
Wacker Neuson’s EZ25 has been designed and built from the ground up to ensure impressive performance, flexibility and ease of use, thanks its zero-swing tail and exceptionally smooth handling.
But don’t let that lead you into thinking this machine is small or lacking in power. The 2.5-tonne excavator provides excellent room for the operator, both when entering and exiting the cab and sitting in the chair, and factory-fitted two-way auxiliary hydraulic lines make the EZ25 ready for attachments
like the hydraulic breaker. Also included from the factory are the hydraulic quick hitch and hydraulic hoses at the front of the machine, a huge time saver which will make operators who regularly change attachments, especially solo operators, very happy.
Coming in at only 1.6m wide, the EZ25 can be trailered behind a 4WD with a 3.5-tonne load limit, making the EZ25 a great option for tradies, landscapers, pool installers and anyone running similar set ups.
Operators looking to use hammers, augers,
and grabs will appreciate the hydraulic performance, with the EZ25 running just over 60 litres per minute, ensuring the machine will be more than capable of handling anything thrown at it on the attachment front.
Test operator Kelly Burton
For our test drive of the EZ25 we had Kelly Burton from KBL rip into some work with a few different buckets and come back to us on just how the Wacker Neuson performed.
“Being a European-designed machine,
The high comfort level of the cab is great news for or operators working long days.
• Re-designed, ergonomically optimised, easy-access cabin
• Robust, low-maintenance construction
• Zero swing tail
When it comes to daily checks, fluids, and maintenance, the EZ25 offers great access and ease of use.The features, power and performance of the Wacker Neuson EZ25 deliver a high-efficiency work capability.
Designed and built from the ground up to ensure impressive performance and flexibility, thanks its zero-swing tail and exceptionally smooth
• Flexible modern design
• Breakout force: max 22.5kN
• Smooth, precise controls
the first thing I noticed was the spacious operating platform for the operator,” said Kelly. “This seems to be something Wacker Neuson does across its entire range which really suits Australian operators.
“When it came to firing up the EZ25, the best way to describe how it felt was ‘smooth’. It handles like it’s a much bigger machine. It’s got impressive capabilities, yet that power is delivered in such a great, seamless way. For operators working long days in their machine that’s great news.
“The smooth feel significantly reduces fatigue and stress at the end of the day.”
“Another great feature above and beyond
the obvious breakout and lifting performance of the EZ25,” Kelly continued, “which, by the way, for a 2.5-tonne machine was excellent, was the front blade. It’s been over engineered for us Australian operators who love to really push things to the limit. During testing we both dug and pushed around a pile of dirt and rock with great results.
“The last thing I’d like to mention is the ROPS, which can quickly and easily be removed by simply undoing eight bolts and lifting it off with a friend. This will give access into carports and other areas with low ceiling heights, and makes it awesome for storing the machine in a garage when not in use.”
The wrap up
When it comes to daily checks, fluids, and maintenance, the EZ25 offers great access and ease of use. With colour-coded nipples and easy-to-view-in-a-glance fluid indicators, keeping the EZ25 running smoothly will be as easy as it gets.
Wacker Neuson machinery comes with a five-year nationwide warranty which, when combined with all the features, power and performance of the EZ25, delivers a highefficiency work capability. If you’re in the market for a 2.5-tonne zero tail machine you’d be mad not to get in contact with your local Wacker Neuson dealer to arrange a demo.

Excavator owners don’t come much happier than Josh Shawyer. And if you really want to see him with a huge grin, ask him about his LiuGong excavators.
Based in Mulgrave, NSW, Pro Contracting is an earthmoving and excavation company specialising in planning and carrying out various transport and excavation challenges. But as boss-man Josh Shawyer points out, there’s not much in the excavation line Pro Contracting doesn’t tackle, and the company’s rapid growth is a testament to competent people and good equipment.
“I started Pro Contracting in 2019,” said Josh, showing justifiable pride. “We now have about 18 staff, and we do a range of works… all aspects of excavation, really, and civil works and plant hire, too.”
Pro Contracting was just about to take delivery of its fourth LiuGong excavator, a 915FCR, and Josh was clearly a very happy owner.
“Yes, mate!” beamed the 31-year-old. “The LiuGong excavators have been really good.
“The warranty’s great, parts are widely
available, and back up and service from Liam King at the dealer, Pacific Machinery Group, has been brilliant. All our machines have just had the standard, scheduled servicing and I haven’t needed Pacific to come out for anything else. I just haven’t had any dramas with the machines.”
Simple is a plus
While many operators will say, “An excavator is an excavator,” there’s a few aspects of the LiuGong range which Josh really likes.
“On the newest one we’re just about to have delivered, it’s got a 3D, full 360-degree camera, and I found that a really good feature. It’s also push-button start, so it’s up there with the technology.
“All in all, to be honest, the LiuGong excavators are fairly basic machines, but that’s not a bad thing to me. They do what they need to do and they’re comfortable for the operator, but they’re not too technical. I don’t need to go through every little thing when a new operator jumps in one.”
It’s not only Josh who’s keen on the reliability and simplicity of LiuGong. Jason Lyall, with the Australian distributor for LiuGong, gives Josh’s assessment a big thumbs up.
“The LiuGong excavators have been really good.”
“Josh is spot on,” said Jason. “LiuGong equipment is extremely durable and we rarely have any issues once the machines are delivered to the customer.
“On the odd occasion there is an issue, we’re able to support the machine via the massive investment we’ve made in parts and also in local technical support. Along with the dealer, Pacific Machinery Group, we’re ecstatic Josh and the team at Pro Contracting have chosen to partner with us and look forward to supporting his continued growth well into the future.”

Introducing Nemesis
The
is
Designed and built especially for landscape contractors and propertymaintenance operators who offer a range of services, the Mean Green Nemesis is a cost-effective, high-performance mower perfectly suited for larger home blocks and small-acreage spaces.
Though more compact, the Nemesis is manufactured to the same engineering and quality standards for which EcoTeq zeroemission solutions are famous. And it’s an absolute pleasure to ride!
Access the benefits of 100% electric commercial mowing technology
Like all EcoTeq equipment, it’s quality first with the Nemesis. Developed on the back of more than a decade of research and development by manufacturers Mean Green in the US, this mower is ready for unforgiving Australian conditions. The Nemesis provides all the benefits of commercial-grade electric mowers in a smaller, lower-cost machine. By adapting the technology and performance of commercial electric ride-on mowers and applying it to a zero-turn machine, you’ll find the Nemesis is fast and extremely agile.
Significantly lighter, quieter, smoother to operate, and cleaner than its petrol rivals.
Easy to maintain and cost efficient
The Nemesis comes with the features and conveniences you’d expect in high-quality commercial equipment, including:
• A simple, interactive touch-screen display to modify settings
• Comfortable high-back suspension seat with dual cup holders
• High/low ground speed control
• An adjustable rollover protection structure (ROPS) to keep you safe
• Dual USB charge ports – super handy
Up to five acres on a single charge
The Nemesis is designed with practicality and manoeuvrability in mind. Its compact deck houses a powerful 7.2kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing you to mow up to five acres on a single battery charge. Its compact design makes it easy to manoeuvre through gates and into tight spaces.
When you’ve finished mowing, all you have to do is clean the deck of your Nemesis, plug it into a regular single-phase powerpoint to recharge, and it’s ready for the next time you have mowing to be done.
The compact deck houses a powerful 7.2kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing up to five acres of mowing on a single battery charge.
• Adjustable cutting height with 14 pre-set options
• Front suspension and solid wheels
• Optional LED floodlights for any earlymorning, twilight or evening work.
The 48” Vortex deck is perfect for landscape contractors and homeowners alike, and there’s the option to add a solar canopy system for extended battery life, longer mowing times and protection from the elements.
The Nemesis will never leave you stranded on the job. It features a warning system to let you know when the battery has 15 minutes of charge remaining, so you know when it’s time to get back to base and recharge.
Safer. Quieter. Smoother. Smarter
The Nemesis features the world’s most advanced low-noise, low-voltage engineering. You’ll find it to be significantly lighter, quieter, smoother to operate, and cleaner than its petrol rivals. This makes the Mean Green Nemesis by EcoTeq the smarter, safer, quieter choice for maintaining grassed or turfed acreage blocks.
Beating the rising cost of fuel
Mowing equipment
Brenton worked out the cost benefit of buying an electric mower with fuel running costs based on $1.60 to $1.65 per litre. That was before fuel prices skyrocketed and the federal government removed the 22-cent excise in September 2022.
“On a heavy week we charge our unit three times,” said Brenton. “It takes four to six hours overnight. We just plug it into the wall and away it goes.
“Our fuel cost is between 30 and 40 litres per week on a heavy load. We’ve saved somewhere between $2500 to $3000 since our electric machine became operational about 36 weeks ago.”
Less downtime for maintenance
Impressed with EcoTeq’s after-sales care, Brenton described the ease and cost-benefit of getting his Mean Green mower serviced compared to his petrol mower.
“EcoTeq’s maintenance division called us and booked in the service. Their technician was in and out in about an hour.
“If we needed someone to come out to fix something, if we let them know before midday, they would send someone out that same day for repairs, otherwise it’s the next

McConnel Robocut S300
Ihave only ever used one remote-control mower, many years ago, so I was very excited to get my hands on the new McConnel Robocut S300 and see what it was capable of. I was very impressed and surprised at the variety of material that can be cut, as well as the variety of terrain the machine is capable of operating on.
Overview
The machine itself is a wide-tracked unit with a very low centre of gravity and capable of cutting on slopes of 55 degrees – considerably more than any conventional mower could come close to. It’s also much faster, neater and safer than an operator with a handheld brushcutter, and more capable as well, with it mowing down small saplings with ease.
I tested the Robocut S300 on some sloping terrain the council doesn’t even attempt to slash due to the steepness. The ground cover had been allowed to grow for years and I
suspect it’s because it’s too dangerous for any operator or machine. The Robocut S300 ploughed through the area, on various types of material and on varying slopes.
It was very impressive indeed.
Tech
Drive is via electric motors that give a smooth propulsion and precise control, rather than through hydro-drive units as in zero-turn mowers, and the electric motors are more economical.
The electric motors are powered by a generator driven by a Vanguard Commercial 28hp fuel-injected engine, and the fuel injection enables the engine to run on the excessive slopes where a carburetted engine would fail.
Cutting width is 1.1 metres and updraft mulching blades are fitted. These blades mulched up extremely long grass and scrub with ease in one pass on a high-cut setting, before another pass at a lower setting
With the cowl up engine access for maintenance is easy, as is access to the removable fuel container, two of which come with the machine.
Two joysticks operate forward, reverse, turning and cuttingheight adjustment. The engine can be started from the remote control and the throttle adjusted as well.
enabled a lower finish – cutting heights vary from 25mm to 180mm.
A hinged cowl which lifts easily and holds in place covers the internals of the machine to eliminate the accumulation of debris. With the cowl up engine access for maintenance is easy, as is access to the removable fuel container, two of which come with the machine. The removable fuel container can be replaced with a full one in about 30 seconds.
An onboard fault diagnostic screen is also located under the cowl in case of any issues.
Efficient
I found the Robocut S300 surprisingly easy to operate, although I would expect it would take a full day’s use to be able to operate the machine efficiently and to its full potential.
The remote control has a waistband to secure to your body for convenient operation, and two joysticks operate forward, reverse, turning and cutting-height adjustment. The engine can be started from the remote control and the throttle adjusted as well. Blade engagement and disengagement is also via the remote, as is the adjustable ground speed and tracking adjustment for extreme slopes.
An emergency-stop button is easily activated on the remote if the operator needs to shut down the machine in a hurry, and a digital screen in the centre shows speed, engine RPM, cutting height and an hour meter. Range between the remote and machine can be up to an impressive 150 metres, enabling an operator to be in a safe
long range could also see an operator sitting in their vehicle out of the weather on a rainy or extremely hot day.
Although the review machine wasn’t fitted with a GPS, it is GPS-enabled, so for an added cost this feature is very impressive. Once fitted, the operator drives around the perimeter of the site to map out the area to cut, presses the ‘forward’ control, and the S300 then automatically mows the entire area with minimal overlapping of runs of two centimetres.
The machine is also bi-directional, so it mows in either direction. On a steep slope you can either go up and reverse back down on another line, or across the slope and
time wasted during turning.
Summing up
I would have to say that the McConnel Robocut S300 grossly outperformed my expectations. It cut through long, overgrown material with ease in one pass, and material I thought would take a few passes to get down was effortlessly pulverised.
On the other hand, the S300 was just as comfortable cutting regular maintained grass, producing an excellent, neat, even finish.
The ability to be able to tackle various materials and operate on such a wide range of terrain makes the Robocut S300 a truly impressive machine in my view.
The machine mows in either direction. On a steep slope it can either go up and reverse back down on another line, or across the slope and reverse back at the same speeds.
A fuel-injected Vanguard Commercial 28hp engine enables running on the excessive slopes where a carburetted engine would fail.

Gravely Pro-Turn 652
Cuts fast and efficiently, handling more work in less time.
The new Gravely Pro-Turn is a bit different to its predecessors. It still has the robust American build quality and cutting capabilities, but also now has increased operator comfort with the addition of an Operator Pod System.
Higher productivity
The Operator Pod System is a seat and foot well that has its own suspension independent to the machine, cushioning the blows on rough terrain. This enables the user to operate the machine faster on uneven terrain without compromising comfort, which in turn equates to a more productive machine. I find some suspension-type setups on zero turns a bit too springy and spongy, but this system is one of the better setups I have used. There’s enough suspension to make a comfortable ride, but not too much so you bounce around uncontrollably, albeit softly.
I was able to ride comfortably while in transit on a rocky dirt path at full speed with the Pro-Turn 652, something I haven’t been able to do on other zero turns.
Well thought out
Gravely has developed the third generation of its X Factor decks, and this machine was fitted with the X Factor 3 52-inch deck.
Looking as robust as previous models,
it’s constructed of seven-gauge steel with exceptional reinforcing in the critical stress and wear areas. It has also been redesigned to disperse the cut grass better than its predecessor. This was certainly the case with the medium-short grass I tested it on, achieving an exceptional cut.
I was concerned about top-of-deck
access with the foot well being part of the independent operator pod. Gravely has addressed this with the foot well hinging up and automatically locking in an upright position to give ample access to the pulleys, belts and spindles. I like the open-ended spindle covers as they let debris escape from around the spindle rather than building up,
Enough suspension to make a comfortable ride, but not too much so you bounce around uncontrollably.
Everything I’ve learned to expect from Gravely – solid, well-built, efficient and capableThe foot well hinges up and gives ample access to pulleys, belts and spindles. The quality and proven Kawasaki FX850V engine produces 27hp and is a nice match for the 52-inch cut. Large, rear 26 x 12 -16 low-profile radial turf tyres help with traction on undulating terrain and are reasonably forgiving on grass at normal speeds.
than its predecessor.
and the discharge chute has a secure upright position for storage and transport, rather than springing down like many others. I’m also a fan of the large-diameter, cog-style, heightadjusting mechanism. It’s easy to see desired height settings and just as easy to rotate to the desired cutting position – there are 19 to choose from to suit all applications.
Mechanicals
Powering the machine is the quality and proven Kawasaki FX850V engine producing 27hp, which is a nice match for the 52-inch cut. These engines are renowned for their performance, longevity and reliability.
Access around the engine for maintenance is excellent, and a handy oil-drain hose fitted ensures mess-free, easy oil draining. A solid rear cowl protects the engine from inevitable knocks and looks the goods in the style department as well.
The speed of the 652 is terrific, with a forward speed of 24.1kph and a reverse of 9.6kph making it a very productive machine, especially considering you can operate at higher speeds on irregular terrain compared to conventional zero-turns. The large, rear 26 x 12 -16 low-profile radial turf tyres help with traction on undulating terrain and are reasonably forgiving on the grass surface at normal speeds.
Summing up
The Gravely Pro-Turn 652 is everything I’ve learned to expect from Gravely – a solid, wellbuilt, efficient and capable machine that is fun and comfortable to operate.
Gravely also offers a very impressive commercial warranty of 5 years/1500 hours which will give contractors peace of mind when purchasing.

The final step is always Intergrain
All landscapers know the job’s not done if it’s not done right. It’s a matter of pride. So, when you’re working on a job that includes a deck, the protective coat you apply is just as important as the overall construction. To complete the job with total confidence and get the garden’s centrepiece looking great, the final step is always Intergrain.
Intergrain’s Universal Timber Oil is the clear choice for protecting and prolonging the timber of your client’s deck. The clear decking oil deeply penetrates into the timber to protect it from the inside out, preventing warping,
splashes or watering the garden. The unlocked system in Intergrain’s Universal Timber Oil allows for it to be applied over existing migrating oils, and can be overcoated with oil-based or water-based coatings for flexibility in the future. This is a huge benefit to clients who will maintain it themselves, and for you if you’re contracted to care for their property.
Available in clear to enhance the timber’s natural beauty, there is also the option of seven colour additives: Coastal Grey, Dusty Oak, Rusted Red, Rich Maple, Honey Gold, Roast Walnut

Why use an insurance broker?
Insurance is complex. There are a myriad of policies on the market, and by using a broker you can relax. The broker will do all the homework for you.
Going direct to an Insurer may sometimes seem cheaper, but this is rarely the case.
Would you fight a legal dispute without a solicitor? Would you lodge your company’s tax return without an accountant? So why would you insure direct?
Recent events have resulted in a large number of claims, and using a broker can assist you with getting your claim sorted quicker. The broker will do a lot of the work for you and allow you to focus on your

The perfect tool to brush away the dirt
Honda VersaTool has released its ninth attachment: The Brush.
The Brush has just been released as the ninth attachment to Honda’s VersAttach® System and is the perfect tool to keep your ground surfaces clean. Honda’s Brush attachment is lightweight, at just 6.3kg, ensuring any clean-up job will be quick and easy, no matter what the surface.
Being suitable for pavement, roadways, cobbled paths and artificial grass ensures you can safely remove both dry and wet debris from any surface. The Brush’s max sweep width of 600mm is perfect for sweeping away fallen leaves and foliage, as well as removing water from hard surfaces.
Performance and comfort
Honda knows the importance of power, performance and reliability, which is why the company goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure best-in-market quality. The VersaTool and all its attachments – including its two powerheads – are of contractor quality. You have the choice of either a 25cc or 35cc powerhead, both powered by a Honda GX Series four-stroke engine ready for any of the nine attachments available, including the Brushcutter, Edger, Blower, Pruner, Short and Long Shaft Hedgetrimmer, Cultivator, Brush and Extension Pole.
Both engines have strong low-end torque characteristics, allowing many jobs to be performed at partial throttle, increasing fuel efficiency while reducing noise and operator fatigue. The innovative design of the engines provides for full, 360-degree operation, allowing the VersaTool to be used—and stored—upright, sideways or even upside down.
The innovative joint locking system makes it easy to connect attachments with confidence. Just push and click to lock your attachment in place, with no tools required. The locking system is wear-resistant, offers intuitive assembly and instant, secure
engagement of attachments. In addition, the anti-vibration system provides comfortable use, especially for long periods of operation.
Attachments
Honda’s Brushcutter and Edger attachments are a must have for any contractor when it comes to lawn maintenance. Both attachments are ergonomically designed, lightweight and easy to use to ensure they get the job done. The Blower attachment does not disappoint and will blow away the remaining debris to keep the garden and paths clean with its excellent power and high air velocity.
When it comes to the hedges, the Pruner attachment makes trimming, pruning and cutting high branches look like child’s play and is the perfect tool to use with Honda’s Extension Pole. The Extension Pole will add an extra metre of reach, also making it a suitable addition to the Short Shaft Hedgetrimmer.
The Short Shaft Hedgetrimmer features a 500mm double-sided blade with a cutter guard to ensure safety and prevent injuries. It also offers seven different cutting positions across 110 degrees and can tackle any hedge, bush or foliage.
right pivot along with an improved locking mechanism. When it comes to storage, the fold-over design has been improved to a 360-degree rotation, making it easier to put away. An anti-snapping guard is also now included.
The Long Shaft Hedgetrimmer attachment has recently undergone product improvements and offers eleven different cutting positions.

Big boots to fill
Christine Stanton.
Let me get this straight: I’m not a horticulturist or a landscaper, so it feels like a baptism of fire stepping into the boots of Matt Lunn, former Executive Officer of Landscape Industries Association of WA, who has moved on to greener pastures, quite literally!
My career, built over many years, has included working in many different industries – government, advertising, education, sport, corporate, media and property – and in recent times I’ve devoted my energy to the not-for-profit space, specialising in organisational management, governance and member services.
I recently met a group of landscape industry people and asked them why they were members of an industry association. The responses were many and varied, just as the industry is to both the environment and the people who live and work in it.
On a day-to-day basis, people generally don’t actually think about landscaping and yet we spend every day enjoying the lush, sometimes rambling, other times manicured, foliage.
How we engage with the elements of nature and how we shape our environment continues to define our existence.
Practitioners of landscaping, gardening, horticulture and those industries that shape and model our environs are immersed to a certain extent in how to work with elements of the natural environment. They have an innate ability to transform the ugly into beauty and the barren into fertile.
How we spend our leisure time in the great outdoors, or at times in the indoors (courtesy of the pandemic), provides a unique opportunity for those working in the landscaping industry.
Even with everything going on in the world right now, the landscaping industry is still experiencing growth. According to IBIS World, ‘The market size of the landscaping services industry in Australia is set to grow, and that growth might come from an unexpected quarter.’
Interest from younger generations
As more millennials begin to buy houses, the generation will likely begin to take up more lawn-care activities and landscape maintenance. Health consciousness is on the rise among millennials. A study indicated about two-thirds of adults are currently
growing edible plants or planning to grow them. Habitats at home will be a retreat, a sanctuary from the day-to-day grind.
are on the drawing board across the country and as the sector grows, so too does the importance of getting the industry’s house in order.

landscaping services. They quite often don’t know a native from an exotic and without having the Waterwise training LIAWA offers its members, cause no end of heartache and exorbitant costs to consumers and the industry alike.
LIAWA shines a spotlight on the best of the best of the industry, showcasing the LIAWA Awards of Excellence on March 18 at Optus Stadium. New, exciting events are planned for 2023 and with the support of its sponsors and stakeholders, the future looks bright for members of LIAWA. LIAWA welcomes new members and strongly encourages them to join now to get the latest industry news, product reviews, technical updates, become a certified Waterwise practitioner and build their business.
