The pace of Australia’s move from petrolpowered outdoor power equipment to electric, battery-powered gear is about to accelerate sharply.
I’ve just spent a couple of days at a swish resort on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as a guest of Kress, a brand which will be new to most Australians – it was certainly new to me.
It turned out Kress has been offering power tools in Australia for quite a while, and the German company has a good reputation.
But on this occasion I was lucky enough to be included in the unveiling of something really revolutionary and exciting. Essentially, Kress has a battery system which will charge an 11Ah battery from zero to 100 per cent in just a smidge under eight minutes.
I was keen to delve into the specifics of what parameters might be necessary to give that result, but, as near as I could tell, the Cyberpack system delivered as it promised. That’s astonishing. It will set the landscaping and outdoor power equipment industries on end.
But to reinforce the incredible achievement of designing and producing this system, Kress, and its parent company Positec, made a huge investment in presenting it, ready to go, to a big collection of hard-headed, no-nonsense powerequipment dealers. Those people – and me – were invited to cut, saw, blow, snip, and mow the designated resort-grounds area in whatever fashion we wanted, and from what I could see, no one gave any of that equipment a millimetre of leeway. Those tools copped a thrashing, including a run in unexpected heavy rain.
You can read about it some of the equipment, and the event itself, elsewhere in this issue, but the clincher for me was when the charging time was challenged. The Kress folks gave a battery to someone chosen at random for the crowd, showed it was at zero charge, then had another audience member time the charge cycle. At around seven minutes and 57 seconds the indicator lights went off and that
battery was at capacity.
I’m still stunned at what I’d seen.
On your way to reading about the Kress Cyberpack – it has a little trademark symbol next to it whenever the Kress people say it, but we’re all friends here – you’ll be able to catch up with the regulars – Marc Worner, Anna Turner, Jonathan Garner and John Gabriele – lose yourself in some test drives, and of pick up on some of the great work being done by the very progressive and hardworking associations who support the landscaping industry.
That’s a big measure of landscapeindustry news and information right there. You couldn’t get through that lot in the time it takes to charge a Kress 11Ah battery. Not by a long shot.
The future for landscaping’s looking very clean and it’s moving fast. We’re lucky to be part of it.

Seven ways to streamline your business: part 1
As you go about running and building your business you inevitably end up with ‘clutter’ that will slow you down and cost you money. The clutter comes in all shapes and sizes, from software to staff. Over the next two issues we will identify the main types of clutter and how to reduce it.
How to start
If you’ve been reading my articles for a while, you probably know what I’m going to write next. Yes, the first thing you should do is look at your business processes to identify inefficient systems and overlaps. From there you’re better equipped to tackle all the other areas of your business.
1. Processes
If you haven’t done this already, map out your cradle-to-grave*. This is the process for dealing with a job from the moment it’s an enquiry right through to the final payment. The cradle-to-grave clearly maps out each step taken, by whom, how, and when. It links to all the documents, software and other processes (eg: project-handover procedure) that carry a project from start to finish.
This exercise will help identify and cull outdated processes, while also highlighting where the need is for new processes. This is the most important step to making your business more efficient.
2. Staff
Good staff are hard to find, especially at the moment, which is all the more reason to look critically at your team. Once your cradle-tograve is established, you need to make sure
all the staff have a place within that process. No doubt you have at least one staff member who disrupts the apple cart. This may be due to poor workmanship or their lack of willingness to adopt new processes within your business. Either way, even if they’re a good tradie it doesn’t mean they’re good for your business. Removing these people from the team will likely cause an uptick in morale and productivity for the rest of the team.
While it’s very important to remove toxic staff from your team, it’s just as important to do all you can to not hire them in the first place.
Take some time to identify your company culture. Write up job descriptions that reflect this culture. When you hire, hire based more on the company culture than the skill set you need. Skills can be taught; culture is much harder to change.
Spend time and money on training and supporting the right staff. This will give you an opportunity to promote from within (a much easier option than external hiring), and fosters a culture of reward and career progression. This will develop a team that works well together and supports each other. A team you can rely on to go the extra mile because they are happy and loyal!
3. Software
If your business has been running for more than three years I can almost guarantee you’re using outdated software. That’s not to say you should change, but it’s high time for a review of all the software you use and how it interacts and fits in your cradle-to-grave.
As we grow our businesses, we adopt software to meet a need. As we grow, we
end up adopting more and more software solutions to meet more and more needs. The average tradie uses between five and seven different software systems to run their business. And, as the software companies grow, they evolve, adapt and change to fill more of their clients’ needs. Most likely the solutions you’re using don’t talk to each other efficiently, and there’s a doubling up of data entry and/or still a gap you wish to fill. On top of that, the subscriptions get more expensive!
Start by taking a detailed look at all the software subscriptions you have. Identify where you are using them within the business and how effective they are at that job. Take a look to see if you’re using all the features of the software to its fullest potential. Does it overlap with other software you’re using? Or is there a new system (or upgrade of existing) on the market that could replace the three software packages you’re already using? The replacement software may cost time and money in the short term, but if it reduces the need to double enter data it’s very likely worth the additional money. And it’s also likely the one solution costs the same or less than the three you were already using.
Changing software is a pain in the backside, but each new system that comes on the market gets more effective and easier to use. It is really worth your time to investigate your options.
Next issue we’ll look further at how we can make cost savings and efficiencies with materials, vehicles, and contract.

Side-passage makeovers
WORDS: MARC WORNER
The side passage of any home is usually used for the garbage bins, storage, that future project on ‘the list’, the kids’ pushies and summertime toys such as canoes and paddleboards. We rarely venture there because we have no need, and quite frankly, it’s an eyesore.
However, you could do what landscapers do best; transform the landscape into a usable and aesthetically pleasing extension to your customers’ living area and a colourful addition to their garden.
Main points
First, we need to consider access, usage, storage, aspect (sun movement and prevailing breeze), privacy, security and, most importantly. our customer’s budget. Customers can sometimes have unrealistic expectations when it comes to what they can achieve for a set amount of money. Explain at your first meeting what outcomes can be achieved with the different budgets so you don’t waste your valuable time and effort preparing a quote that will receive a cursory glance and be binned. If customers realise they’ll get a practical result from a previously underutilised space, and it’s aesthetically appealing for a given amount, you can always add value during the job with variations to the contract.
Next we need to work out the productquality option: high-end, middle-of-the-road or budget? There are various factors that will influence this decision for any project. Landscapers need to remember gross profit margins can be adjusted accordingly.
Access
Ask the owners about use.
There’s no point creating a garden of delights if it’s where the owner works on trailbikes or repairs mowers.
When we calculate access, we need to remember in the future it may be necessary to get at least the size of a builder’s barrow down the side passage, so it needs to be kept clear for this width to access the rear yard.
TIP: On narrow or poor-access sites, it saves time to get bulk materials such as pebbles and sand delivered in bags of a manageable weight.
View
Creating a landscape in a side passage gives the opportunity to dress up the building’s walls with paint, sculptures and hanging baskets – even green walls – along the way. Perhaps the installation of stand-alone blueboard walls and textured paint in front of the side boundary fence could give the required look while retaining good access.
If space is at a premium, think about installing strained wire with climbers up a side boundary fence. Green walls or water

features are not as simple but can have a soothing effect, especially when viewed from bedrooms or a kitchen.
Maybe it’s a slatted timber wall that becomes a feature – even if it does hide the garbage bins.
TIP: When using an airless spray-gun, depending on the type of paint, dilute with water or thinning agent to stop the gun lines from clogging.
Use
Side passages are often used to store objects and just about every household has a garden shed. In that shed is a lawnmower and some garden equipment, but also a mountain of stored bric-a-brac kept…‘just in case’.
Oddly though, owners are always looking to clear excess treasured keepsakes out of their garden shed. Here is an opportunity to suggest the owners free up some space in their garden shed by storing it down the side passage, and to that end, you’ll build them a roofed area with, say, clear polycarbonate roof sheeting. Pushbikes could be wallmounted while being protected from the weather. In the case of a builder or a brickie, it’s often tools of trade and excess materials being stored and constantly accessed.
Perhaps it becomes a place to sit in quiet serenity on a bespoke narrow stone or timber bench you create, or it becomes a space for the owners to enjoy breakfast with others on the weekend under the pergola with ornamental flowering climbers over it you build for them.
Pergolas attached to the house over

windows can provide an interesting light-andshade experience along the path as well as privacy and protection for exposed windows. TIP: Climbing plants on a pergola will create a softening effect if the space is too narrow for other plants. The Espalier technique also works wonders.
Aspect
Aspect plays a crucial role in the outcome. Is it a shady, south-facing passage? Or is north-facing and sunny all day? A shady walkway is ideal to create a cool summer oasis lined with ferns of various heights with
different subtle shades of green and various leaf sizes and patterns.
A sunny side passage can provide a great opportunity to build a kitchen garden for your customers.
West-facing passages may get a blast of hot sun in the late afternoon if there’s no shade from the house. Is there a prevailing breeze down the side passage that resembles arctic winds or a gentle sea breeze? Aspect always determines plant choice.
No matter what the aspect, the addition of an outdoor gym and shower could be a winning suggestion.

blocks. If a neighbour’s windows look down onto a side passage, is it practical to screen off their view?
Is there enough room with the right aspect to grow a tall and slender hedge while considering the level of maintenance? Perhaps an artist could be engaged to paint a trompe du jour on the fence or we could espalier a citrus tree along it for that Mediterranean or French look – provided it’s a sunny position.
Security
Security will be more or less of an issue depending on the side passage use, whether there will be any valuables stored, the suburb, and the owners’ wishes. It may be an 1800mm-high metal gate will be needed at the building’s end secured by deadlocks, or a cottage-garden timber gate with a D latch or a standard pool gate. Is the installation of security cameras needed?
Will ground surfaces need a makeover? Whatever option is chosen we need safe and secure ground beneath our feet and it needs to be practical for the owner’s use. Options abound. We can concrete it, pave it, partially pave it with interspersing ground covers between pavers, lay pebbles or artificial turf, spread recycled concrete aggregate or deck over it.
TIP: the measurement of a comfortable step for paver spacing is approximately 700mm apart.
Ground
There are several ground-cover plants like Dichondras, with flowers in white, greenish, and yellowish, 2mm–3mm diameter that will quickly spread over the surface and allow light pedestrian traffic.
If you install artificial turf, make sure you have properly prepared the ground so it’s perfectly smooth. Slight slopes are okay, and make sure to slope it away from the residential building.
Given sufficient room and budget, think about building a small deck in real or composite timbers to achieve a level change which always adds interest to what was otherwise a dull space. It may even increase living space.
The major hardware chains provide cost-effective real timber and are within easy access in most suburbs across the country.
TIP: lay your planks diagonally to create the appearance of greater width.
Added value
Will the side passage design be high- or low-maintenance?
Some landscapers have a maintenance arm to their business and promote it with various terms and contract types.
Whatever you design and construct down a side passage, be assured it will add value to your customers’ home and their enjoyment of it.

The changing economic landscape
money, and energy, and to nurture wildlife, reduce air, soil, and water pollution and make healthy recreational spaces.
A Natural Connection
There’s no doubt the economic downturn, affordable housing, the rental crisis, and the rising cost of living is impacting the landscape construction and maintenance industry. However, it was once said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” There are opportunities that abound in times of significant change and turmoil. Opportunity is everywhere, and according to one philosopher, an opportunity will present itself every 14 days.
The trick is to identify the opportunities and take appropriate action to capitalise on them.
The bright side
As the public is becoming increasingly more aware of environmental issues such as the impact of carbon energy sources for power generation and the current economic crisis beginning to manifest through mortgage stress, homeowners are looking at getting more from their gardens. Money is no doubt becoming tighter, so more leisure time will be spent on activities with less impact on household budgets – like gardening. This doesn’t mean you may miss out on potential business due to less money being spent on landscape design construction and maintenance. It can be quite the contrary.
Trends come and go, but sustainable landscapes are here to stay. There will of course be evolutionary changes to the sustainable landscape and industry
practitioners will need to adapt to these changes efficiently and effectively to sustain business capability. The challenge is to stay ahead of the pack. You will soon be left scratching in the dust wondering where in your business model you went wrong if you fail to do so. General Eric Shineski, US Army Chief of Staff said: “If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.”
Being aware of changes in trend can position a business owner to profit even during lean times. While the term ‘sustainable landscaping’ has shifted in recent times to include green landscaping, nature-scapes, and eco-landscaping which all primarily follow the same principles: to design, create, and maintain landscapes that save time,
Gardens and green spaces are intrinsically linked to health and wellness. The desire people have to interact with the outdoor environment has given rise to a new breed of gardeners dedicated to the garden-totable movement and edible landscapes have become mainstream. A clash of cultures is occurring with permaculture and ornamental horticulture coalescing to produce landscape designs that are sustainable, aesthetically rich and engaging. The suburbs are fast becoming the food bowls of local communities, and this is being expressed in garden design.
The desire to combine our love of the great outdoors with everyday living continues to drive an interconnection between the internal living area and outdoor entertainment areas. Producing a harmonious link between the two, whereby the transition from indoors to out and vice versa is seamless, continues to challenge landscape designers. The use of vertical gardens, planter boxes and decking are making this connection more achievable. Utilising every possible surface to increase

wood-fired pizza ovens and fire pits in these areas, are fast becoming standard inclusions of Australian backyards. The importance of the garden in our social interactions cannot be underestimated.
Naturalistic gardens or nature-scapes are once again gaining popularity on a global scale in urban gardens where the formal lines of clipped box hedges, topiary and manicured lawns are giving way to more natural landscapes where layered plantings are desirable with a mix of tree species under planted with shrubs, flowers and groundcovers. Plant species are selected based on the purpose they serve in providing habitat to support the local pollinators and
other wildlife as well as for their beauty and functionality. Selecting plants that serve a dual purpose in this way increases the functionality of the landscape.
A new narrative
Modern landscape designs are crisp, sleek, and functional and are intended to engage the user with a sensual experience that personifies the modern Australian lifestyle and shape, both the future and present physical environment. To achieve an aesthetic that is both long-lasting and sustainable, the landscape designer must consider the type of materials used in the landscape. Modern design often uses state-of-the-art
materials to achieve the desired outcome which can include metals, stone, ceramics, wood, plastics, glass, and polycarbonate materials. There are alternatives to these materials that can provide a similar functionality, often at less cost to the user and the environment. The use of recycled products in the landscape construction industry has been gaining traction in recent years and a wider acceptance by several companies with the foresight and vision to develop sustainable, environmentally responsible enterprises has emerged. Reusing and repurposing materials has given rise to alternative materials becoming more readily available for construction purposes. Bulk-materials suppliers are paving the way for reducing industry reliance on products derived from natural resources. A common criticism targeted at recycled or repurposed products is that they are inferior to the refined, graded raw materials they substitute. This situation is being addressed through the collaborative research and development of recycled-materials specifications by several government departments and external agencies. One of the benefits of repurposing materials within a landscape is the historical perspective and uniqueness that such materials lend to the setting. Repurposed materials don’t necessarily need to appear rustic to achieve such results, and they can also be dressed to provide a clean, fresh appearance congruent with modern landscape design principles and

newly processed materials. The aim of sustainable landscape design should be to use a minimal number of processed materials when and wherever practicable. Consideration should also be given to the reuse of site structures or materials at the end of a project life. The aim is to work towards zero net waste over the life of a landscape project. Forward planning can
reduce the volume of excavated site materials that would normally be directed to landfill.
Go big
Landscapes constructed with reused or repurposed materials are not limited to smaller residential applications. Large commercial installations can utilise recycled or repurposed products just as affectively
as smaller installations. Opportunity also exists for the reclamation and reuse of site materials within any size construction site with thoughtful planning prior to site excavation and demolition activities. Effective incorporation of reused, recycled or repurposed materials in landscapes requires considered planning and an integrated approach to landscape design with collaboration between designers, suppliers and construction contractors to encourage adaptive resource management across all sectors of the landscape construction industry. The use of recycled, reused, and repurposed materials in construction is opening the path to setting a new standard for ecological landscape design. At any one point in time the type of materials and the structures they are used to create will vary as design ideation changes along with consumer preference and sentiment. A shift towards more sustainable materials being used in landscapes should be a primary consideration to create and implement designs that are responsive to economic, environmental, and cultural conditions at local and regional levels.

Right plant, right place
After 11 articles, we’re finally pulling ourselves out of the ground and ready to focus on what grows from the healthy ecology we’ve encouraged, nurtured, and in many cases, created. Don’t lose sight of the fact that, in many projects, we commence work with a challenged or very troubled ecology. The building designer, the landscape designer, the builder, the client and the surrounding community have us landscape and horticultural professionals to thank for bringing the many facets of the construction project into a finished package. In some cases, we’ve kickstarted mining, industrial and other unsavoury sites back to a foundation that nature can build upon. In others, we’ve planted treasures that might not be truly appreciated for a generation or three! Our role in the development of healthy environments, healthy communities and healthy people shouldn’t be understated or forgotten.
Enough back patting. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of the green stuff.
Natural selection
Without a healthy soil profile, we can’t grow decent plants. If we can’t grow decent plants we risk not being paid. We’ll chat about what goes on inside plants in a few months’ time. Right now, let’s discuss plant selection.
In many circumstances, there’s a landscape architect or designer telling us what to plant where. They have a vision of their design intent. They’ve provided a plant schedule. They’re possibly earning that lovely margin by providing the plants.
These engagements can often make me feel uneasy. Who takes responsibility for potentially inappropriate plants failing? Naturally, one would think this should fall on the specifier’s shoulders. Often, it doesn’t.
You could have provided the best soil profile, planted to exact standards, obtained the plant from the best grower and
implemented an effective watering regime. Everything’s done right, but if it’s specified for the wrong spot and it fails, then who pays for the replacement? During these forms of engagements, make sure exactly who is responsible for replacements prior to embarking on the project.
Another circumstance is where the client specifies and supplies the plant material. Again, make sure who is responsible for replacements prior to the work.
The final approach is where you’re engaged to specify and supply the plants required to fulfill the various needs to achieve

the design intent. Now we scratch our heads with what to plant where. When it comes to plant selection, experience pays dividends. If you’re new to the game, or struggling to come up with some ideas, then consider approaching it in a manner I learned when studying in England.
Right plant. Right place
We’ve all heard the phrase, but what’s an effective way to determine the right plant for the right place?
The trick is to break it down into an organised process of four factors: function; appearance or aesthetic; plant adaptability and management. The priorities of these factors will differ with each job or application. Restrictions of plant choices might depend on the client’s tastes, site-specific issues, and in many cases, availability of the plants.
A quick reminder to armchair designers. There’s no point suggesting plants if they’re not available.
A closer look
Let’s tease the four factors apart. Function basically relates to why we’re using the plant or what we actually want from it. In other words, its purpose within the landscape or garden. Function guides the type of plant we need for the application. Is it to screen something? Is it to provide shade? Is it to look pretty or provide cut flowers for the house? Is it to stabilise a bank? Dry up a wet area? Function also covers three important facets of the landscape: architectural, engineering and environmental. Let’s dive into these three when we talk about designing with plants later in the year.
Once I’ve identified what function the plant
is to serve, I’ll write out a list of worthy plants for that application.
My next step is to consider the appearance or aesthetic of what’s on my list.
At this point I need to carefully consider the plant type and size of the area I’m working in. Anything I plant will take up space both above and below ground. To ensure the plants are going to perform well, I need to consider available soil volume for the root system to exploit and the size of the available space above ground. So even if I’m trying to select a shade tree, there’s no point in choosing a broad one like a Jacaranda when I only have several metres of open space to grow it in. Another angle within aesthetics is to consider whether your plant choices will marry with the garden style you’re working in. Let’s say the style is tropical and I’m
looking for a tall plant to screen the pool from the neighbours. Although there are several worthwhile conifers that would do the job, they’re not going to look suitable for the style of the garden. Conversely, if we’re looking for a plant to screen in a formal European style, a non-invasive bamboo would hardly tick the box. Aesthetic qualities also include the overall shape of the plant, its foliage, flowers, fruit, bark and how it will look in combination with the other plants under consideration.
Once we’ve determined the aesthetic qualities we’re looking for, the next consideration is to determine adaptability. In other words, whether or not the plant will truly perform in the location. Factors relating to site adaptability, such as soil availability, exposure to excess sunlight, too much shade, salt spray, temperature, radiant heat, strong

winds, frost, cold winds, tolerance to pest and disease, root competition, soil Ph, texture and drainage will define whether the selections made for aesthetic reasons will truly deliver on expectations. ‘Don’t fight the site’ is a simple phrase that sums up adaptability.
Maintenance
Naturally maintenance practices will contribute to a plant’s overall appeal and budget. If we don’t keep up with providing the resources for what each plant needs, the visual and physical quality of the garden will begin to suffer or possibly fail.
At this point, the designer and the client need to be realistic with how much maintenance they’re prepared to commit to. I’ve lost count of the number of broad-acre landscapes and estates designed and built without a thorough understanding of the true ongoing costs to manage the projects.
The landscaper’s role in the development of healthy environments, healthy communities and healthy people shouldn’t be understated or forgotten.
Pruning, weeding, tidying, mulching, mowing, feeding, lifting and dividing all require resources and consideration at the time of selection. If you’re unsure of the maintenance requirements of plants, contact or engage an experienced horticulturist to provide you with this precious information.
Although the ongoing maintenance is often disregarded as the expense is spread out, it does have an effect on achieving the design intent. When you provide the client with
maintenance requirements and associated costs for the specified plants, you’re adding a level of value that will likely go beyond your competition.
Once you’ve filled out the four elements required for the plant and feel you’re still stuck for inspiration, visit some retail nurseries or take a walk around the district of the particular project. Put yourself in the mindset of choosing plants and the suitable options will present themselves.

Despite growing environmental consciousness, professional landscapers
have been forced to accept higher emissions and petrol-powered equipment as the only viable economic option for performance, efficiency, and runtime. Rather than the expense of multiple battery packs, overnight charge times, and high battery replacement costs, the new Kress CyberSystem™ promises an 8-minute charge time, significantly higher power output, longer battery life, and lower operating costs long term.
Don Gao, Chairman and CEO of Positec Group said, “Imagine a battery that charges to 80 per cent capacity in only 5 minutes, provides up to 10 times more re-charges than current lithium-ion batteries, and produces the power and performance that meets or exceeds that of a small combustion engine. In the time it takes for a short water break, lawncare professionals now can rest assured their fuel supply – the new powerful, proprietary Kress CyberPacks™ – will be
re-charged and ready to go. No wasted downtime, more productivity, and more profits for our customers – that’s what Kress is all about.”
Fast re-charge
The new commercial Kress 8-minute CyberSystem™ battery platform was engineered and designed to meet the demanding needs of commercial landscapers. The system features both 4Ah and 11Ah Cyberpacks™, with the ability to recharge each 60V Cyberpack™ to 100 per cent charge in only eight minutes or 80 per cent charge in five minutes; the fastest recharge of any commercial battery system available globally.

Hydraulic, proportional joystick operation allows precision work.
First up was Wacker Neuson’s DT10 Dumper.
This little beast features a hydrostatic drive system that allows for much easier and more convenient use. and saves the operator the hassle of changing gears while trying to operate the hydraulics. The hydraulics on the DT10 can be operated independently of the drive system.
Greg also highlighted the impressive 180-degree swivel skip and very high dump angle.
“It allows you to exit material very quickly,” he pointed out, also explaining the DT10 is a stick-steer dumper.
The machine features a foldable operator’s platform, giving the option of walking behind the machine or standing on board, and ease of maintenance and service are obvious highlights. A lockable engine bay has a quick-opening door located at the rear of the machine, making engine and air-filter access a breeze, and engine oil and hydraulic oil access points next to each other on the top, making maintenance extremely fast and efficient.
The machine also has a very narrow profile, and this, paired with its on-the-spot turning ability, means it can fit even the tightest and narrowest landscaping sites, and a one-tonne capacity is very impressive for a dumper with such a small outline.
The DT10 is customisable, and a selfloading shovel can be added to avoid the inconvenience of needing a second machine to get the job done.

• Hydrostatic drive: simply start and go: No frequent gear changing is needed and the operator can focus on the task
• The hydraulic drive system and the working hydraulics can be operated independently
• Compact dimensions are ideally suited for working in confined spaces
• Suspension-mounted rollers provide a smooth and safe operating experience. Rollers adapt to the terrain and compensate for obstacles or unevenness. Optimum driving comfort, even off-road.

APU3050e reversible vibratory plate with battery drive
“We’re here today introducing the world’s first forward and backward, batteryoperated vibrating plate,” Greg announced as he proudly displayed the Wacker Neuson APU3050e Vibrating Plate.
Being electric means the APU3050e has zero emissions and can be used without restriction in trenches, tunnels and interior spaces. The increased applications for a quiet, zero-emissions machine are staggering. It’s a healthier and safer machine for operators and other crew members.
The vibratory plate doesn’t come with a V-belt due to the motor being mounted directly on the plate, so there’s no maintenance required. The savings on both operator time and spare parts is considerable.
The plate is designed with an extremely low height and an integrated wheel set to make it extremely portable. Convenience of access to tight trenches and spaces gives the operator and machine a high level of versatility. It also features an intuitive guide bar with adjustable speed. Just push the bar forward and the plate goes with it. Pull it back and the plate reverses.
The Wacker Neuson Battery One system powers the APU3050e, a platform compatible with all other Wacker Neuson electric products.

ET18 excavator
The final machine from Wacker’s arsenal of landscaping weapons was the ET18 excavator. This machine’s most intriguing feature is its Vertical Digging System that allows the cabin of the machine to tilt up to 15 degrees to either side while not impeding the 360-degree swings of the cabin. This helps with operator fatigue, gives better angles when paired with a tilt hitch, or can even reduce the need for a tilt hitch in some cases.
The ET18 also features cabin doors on both sides of the machine for ease of access, and the spacious and open cabin itself gives the operator excellent visibility. A hydraulic, telescopic travel gear has a foldable dozerblade extension and allows changing the track width for narrower spaces. That’s on a machine that’s already very compact and narrow, making it great in confined spaces.
As final mark of great design, the ET18 has two lifting lugs on the roof for crane access.

Pryme Earthworks specialises in swimming-pool excavations and site cuts.
Hitachi and Pryme Earthworks
In the last eight or nine years, I think I’ve bought 40 Hitachis,” said Craig Henson, the down-to-earth, no-nonsense owner of Pryme Earthworks. “We’ve got everything from a little 1.7-tonne up to a 13.5 tonne, and I don’t ever have any issues.”
That’s a big endorsement from someone who’s general-hire earthmoving business maintains a sizable fleet, and specialises in swimming-pool excavations and site cuts.
Hard-won experience
Craig established Pryme Earthworks in 2014 after 11 years running a similar company and has continued to expand ever since. Growing from a home office with a single truck, Pryme Earthmoving now has over 15 employees, numerous trucks and machines, and a 1250m2 warehouse/office space in Yatala, Queensland.
Craig and his partner Toni are eager to make the most of the continued growth of the Gold Coast and greater Brisbane areas, and keen to assist locals with
any earthmoving or excavation needs. The company prides itself on having the capability to take on pretty much any job, large or small, that comes its way.
Craig’s machinery fleet covers a lot of ground, including a hydraulics truck, and his huge experience adds immense credibility to his thoughts. He rates the smaller Hitachis as every bit as productive for his business as the big units.
“The little 1.7-tonne is quite a small machine,” he pondered. “It’s great for sneaking in, even through garages and tight-access areas. The canopy set up is quite handy because we can remove it if we ever have to drive through a garage. Then we can put the canopy back on so the boys can operate it in the backyard.”
Generally
It doesn’t take long before Craig is talking about his Hitachi machines as a group, and he’s clearly a fan, especially when it comes to Hitachi reliability.
contractor.com.au 37
When a successful company backs a brand, it’s a good indication the brand has something special to offer. Pryme Earthworks backs Hitachi in the most direct way: buying machines.
“
The canopy can be removed from the 33u, allowing access into confined areas.
Case study
“It’s brilliant,” he said in a matter-of-fact way.
“I don’t ever have any issues. The only trouble comes from maybe the boys getting hitches caught on tree roots or something like that.
“The Hitachi equipment is very, very good in the respect that it has a dual-pump system on our six-and-a-half tonners. We do screw piers and that sort of foundation work, and they do flow a lot of oil to the boom for augers and those kinds of attachments.”
It’s not only the strength and efficiency
of the Hitachis which Craig is keen on. It’s some of the smaller details which make a big difference to a day’s work, too.
“The foot pedals are really handy for tracking with your feet,” he explained. “Some of the other brands, their foot pedals stick up higher off the floor and you’ve got to lift your legs to put them on the pedal. Something as simple as that does make a difference.
“The ergonomic design of the 13 is great, too, with an air-dampening seat and the controls being in exactly the right
spot. It’s really good. You get good feeling through the levers, you can dig with them, you can dig around services, and you can do really detailed fine work with the small machines. Their hydraulics are really, really responsive, too.”
Craig also related how he appreciated the safety of the hose-burst protection on the excavators.
When he finally wound down a little, Craig summed up his experience with Hitachi in just a few words…
“They’re great. Yeah.”
38
Ergonomic design is great.

JCB Teleskid 3TS-8T
A unique machine with endless possibilities.
The JCB Teleskid is the first skid steer or compact tracked loader with a telescopic boom, making it an incredibly versatile machine. It can reach higher, further and deeper than any other skid steer on the market and can access areas most operators wouldn’t have thought possible.
Greater productivity
The JCB Teleskid can do the work of four machines all in one: a forklift, telescopic handler, compact wheel loader and, of course, a compact track loader.
The productivity means the Teleskid can perform jobs like loading and unloading a trailer from a single side, increasing turnaround time, and the JCB EcoMAX engine gives increased performance at low engine speed for improved cycle times. Offering greater tractive force than a small telehandler or forklift means greater pushing power, and an impressive breakout force allows doing the work of bigger machines in less time.
No DPF means no regeneration and no loss of production.
Operator safety and comfort
As with all JCB machines, the Teleskid 3TS8T has the operator in mind, right from the early design stage. In the case of the 3TS-8T, a standard electronic quick-hitch with a fully enclosed tilt cylinder provides less material build up and better load visibility, and an optional dealer-fit flashing beacon and front screen guard provide further, increased, safety and security.
There’s also easy side-door entry, the largest cab on the market and electric-overhydraulic controls for unrivalled comfort and control. JCB is the only manufacturer that offers a side-entry compact track loader with the obvious accompanying safety benefits, and a 33 per cent larger than average cab puts it in a class of its own in terms of improved ergonomics.

Ditch Witch and Hardy Landscaping
The Northern Territory is a harsh environment for a landscaper. For the appropriately named Ed Hardy and his company Hardy Landscaping, the rock, dust and remote locations are all part of every working day.
And considering that, he’s a remarkably cheerful bloke.
“We do a lot of playgrounds,” Ed told us as his children, clearly of the same cheerful nature as their father, catapulted around in the background. “A lot of our clients are schools and community organisations, local governments, state government…those kinds of institutions.”
Things are going well for Hardy Landscaping, and recently Ed took delivery of a Ditch Witch SK900.
Upgrade
“I’ve actually still got two Ditch Witches,” smiled the Darwin-based operator.
“We bought an SK755 just over five years ago, maybe five-and-a-half years ago, and we loved it from the start.
“We’ve now got the SK900. There’s a few upgrades over the 755, but just because it’s a bigger number in the model name, it’s not physically a bigger unit.”
The SK900 has the same ground-drive speed in forward and reverse, but the newest model also features a troubleshooting code gauge on the dash which helps with diagnostics and saves time because there’s no need to hook up a diagnostic tool. There’s also a new paddle throttle in lieu of a mechanical lever.
Scott O’Hare, National Product Manager for Ditch Witch, highlighted a few of the SK900’s main upgrades.
“The Yanmar engine runs at a lower rpm than similar machines,” explained Scott, “so it runs much quieter than other units in the 25hp to 35hp class in the Australian market.”
“With the turbo engine, the new gearpump design and the higher-torque ground drive, the machine will push into a pile a lot more effectively, and it’s got more tractive effort. It’s really noticeable for a machine in this class.”
44 LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR
One Ditch Witch worked so well for Ed Hardy he didn’t wait until he needed an upgrade. He grabbed an SK900 as soon as it became available.
Skid Steers
Ed Hardy of Hardy Landscaping ‘absolutely loves’ his Ditch Witches, especially his new SK900.
A happy SK900 owner.
Works harder
What is it that Ed likes so much about the SK900?
“It’s the power, mainly,” he said, thoughtfully. “It can lift and push a hell of a lot more than anything you can hire. Usually the hire ones are four-wheel drive. The Ditch Witches are on tracks, and the tracks have three points of drive contact. The high drive track system has bolt-on sprockets and wide track rollers which give the machine great traction and power.
“And when we’re doing residential jobs where we’ve got to be careful of the turf, the Ditch Witches seem to rip up a lot less than other machines.”
But it’s the range of attachments, and how well the Ditch Witches handle them, that gets Ed excited.
“There’s probably more attachments available for these machines than other brands, and some of them require power that maybe the other brand machines couldn’t even provide,” he mused. “We’ve got an agitator which is amazing for remote work. If we need to supply, two-, three- or four-cube worth of concrete, we just use the Ditch Witch
and mix it in the bucket. It’s a separate bucket with an auger in it, and we just drive into the pile of dirt – there’s no shovelling, there’s a safety grill – and yeah…just mix up the premix with a bit of cement and water and we’ve got ready-made concrete. The back filler would also have to be a favourite attachment of mine. It saves a mountain of back-breaking work.”
Ideal
Hardy Landscaping hauls the SK900 around on a tandem trailer, and the convenience and reliability of the Ditch Witches is important in an area as vast as Australia’s Northern Territory.
“We’re moving a lot of dirt and rock all the time,” Ed pointed out, “running at high revs and in remote locations. It’s just The Territory.”
Ed sums up his thoughts on Ditch Witch in a few short sentences: “Very happy, mate. I don’t know what compares, but I wouldn’t look anywhere else.
“We just love ’em. We absolutely love ’em.

The change away from internal combustion engines to electric power is happening fast, not only Australia, but all around the world.
And why wouldn’t it?
Opting for purely electric power significantly reduces the carbon footprint of your business’ activity. Electric motors produce zero emissions during operation, making them environmentally friendly and contributing to a cleaner and healthier planet.
Electric motors are also known for their energy efficiency, resulting in substantial operational cost savings over time. Compared to traditional combustion engines, electric motors have higher efficiency rates and lower maintenance costs, translating into reduced operating expenses.
And it’s not as if performance is compromised by going electric. Electric motors provide instant torque, ensuring quick and precise operations, whether it’s in manufacturing, transportation, or any other industry. With their smooth and reliable power delivery, electric motors can boost productivity and streamline processes. They’re also incredibly versatile and adaptable. Whether for industrial processes, construction equipment, or even transportation vehicles, electric motors can be customised to suit specific needs, offering a wide range of power options and configurations.
Noise reduction is a huge benefit in the use of electric motors. They operate quietly compared to their combustion-engine counterparts, creating a more comfortable working environment for employees and minimising noise pollution in urban areas, particularly during nighttime operations.

The SDLG brand has an earned a global reputation for reliability in action.
Shandong Lingong Equipment (SDLG) is one of China’s fastest-growing constructionequipment manufacturers, with over 50 years of industry expertise, spanning more than 130 countries. As a member of the Volvo Group since 2007, SDLG integrates Volvo’s design influence and high-quality standards to provide machinery that is both cost-effective and reliable, with simple operation and maintenance.
Proven success
SDLG wheel loaders have a proven record of success in a variety of Australian applications.
“CJD Equipment has been distributing
SDLG wheel loaders in Australia for over 10 years,” explained Andrew Egan, the National Product Manager for SDLG at CJD Equipment, “and in that time our customers have experienced great success with the product in a number of different industries, including waste and recycling, agriculture, timber plants, and general construction.
“The general feedback is that they are extremely reliable, very simple to operate and versatile.”
Mini excavators
The SDLG mini-excavator range to be offered by CJD Equipment consists of three models: ER616F, ER636F, and the E660FL.
All models, newly designed by SDLG with comfort and reliability at the core, have either zero or reduced tail swing, durable rubber tracks and hydraulic, pilot-operated controls, and are equipped with engines from globally recognised and respected manufacturers Kubota and Yanmar.
SDLG’s mini excavators deliver optimal power and stability at a competitive price, without compromising on quality.
“The new models include standard features that are usually options on other machines,” highlighted Andrew. “This makes SDLG extremely good value for money. “Coupled with their reputation of simplicity, reliability, and ease of operation, SDLG excavators will likely become one of the first choices among astute buyers.”
ER616F
The smallest in the excavator range, the 1.8-tonne, 10kW/13hp ER616F, is powerful and highly efficient, with an excavation force of 15kN and ability to accommodate different

Hitachi and Pinnacle Civil and Rail
Lloyd Johnston is the main man at Pinnacle Civil and Rail, based in Bathurst, NSW. From his mountain home, Lloyd, his crew and machinery offer services all over Australia, and are currently hard at work on the port extensions at Victoria’s Port Melbourne.
“I have staff I send to jobs, plus myself,” volunteered Lloyd. “I’m still very much 100-per-cent hands on with what we do.”
The backbone of Pinnacle’s work is on rail projects. Lloyd explains: “We install all the underground infrastructure for the signalling team on the railways. We put in all the pits and piping, do all the transport, all the excavation, and then the electricians come in and do the wire up at the end.”
To get the work done, Lloyd and his two-year-old company have a couple of excavators and a skid steer, and his newest
machine is the Hitachi ZX85USB-5.
To say Lloyd’s a fan would be an understatement.
“I Love it. I absolutely love it,” beamed the company director.
The ZX85USB-5
The ZX85 is a small, short-rear-end, swing-type excavator with excellent operator visibility and a nimble body. A new, electronically controlled engine and fuel-efficient hydraulics enhance fuel-saving operations, and the engine is teamed up with an electronic governor to save fuel. Electronically controlled acceleration makes for precision engine control and fuel saving.
Operating weight on the ZX85 is 8641kg, so it’s an ‘eight-tonner’ in general conversation, and it has a reach of 7694mm and a width 2200mm.
52 LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR
Hitachi’s technology makes the ZX85USB-5 an absolute winner.
Case study
The small Hiatchi has plenty of power to drive the tilt rotator.
Pinnacle Civil and Rail enjoys the freedom the Hitachi ZX85USB-5 gives to get in and out of tight work areas.
Those are important specs for Lloyd.
“Because we have to go into tight spaces, we don’t have the freedom to be in big machines,” he explained. “That’s why we went with the Steelwrist package with Hitachi – generally we have a lot of space restraints on what we do. The smaller machine gives us the freedom to get in and out of tight work areas, and the tilt rotator lets us dig at multiple angles and reach the places we need to reach.”
Hitachi for the future
Pinnacle currently has several hard-working machines and is looking to expand with new excavators in the next 12 months. Lloyd has no hesitation in naming the brand for his upcoming purchases.
“We’re looking at buying another two Hitachis,” he forecast.
“The support from Bryce Gibson and Hitachi Australia has been fantastic.
“The Hitachi is incredibly quiet compared to my other machines, and it’s nice to sit in all day. It’s incredibly powerful, but its fuel efficiency is the biggest thing I find with it. I’ve got a five-tonne machine that uses more fuel than the eight-tonne ZX85 – and that’s with the Hitachi running at full revs working the tilt rotator hard.
“The fuel economy’s fantastic, and the performance is just unbelievable.”
That’s about as solid a recommendation as anyone will ever see.
Incredibly quiet, and nice to sit in all day.

LiuGong and Insight Electrical and Communications
Made for the job.
Simon Reed is the owner and director at Insight Electrical and Communications, a company which provides electrical and automation solutions to homes and businesses across The Sydney Hills District and Greater Sydney areas, and has done so for over 15 years.
In that time Simon and his staff have tried a few things and learned a lot, and these days things are going along nicely.
“We’ve downsized a little lately,” explained the Sydneysider. “We used to take all the work we could find. Now we concentrate on delivering quality. We take the jobs we know we can do really well.”
Having served over 5000 happy customers across Sydney, with a strong background in luxury residential fit-outs, Insight Electrical has found itself with some interesting commercial projects lately.
Hard rock
“We’ve just done a fitout of Wombeyan Caves campground facility,” recounted Simon. “We had to do two kilometres of underground cabling. The ground was made up of more rock than soil in areas, and we also came across an underground water table.”
“It was a tough job,” he smiled. “We bought a new LiuGong for that one, and it’s been really great.”
The new machine is a 9027F ZTS, and, along with a few different buckets, Simon’s found it ideal equipment for the work he’s asked it to do. The fuel-efficient, low-noise and low-emission Stage V-certified Yanmar 3TNV80F-SNLY engine offers good power, and the hydraulics are matched with the engine for greater efficiency. LiuGong’s Automatic Idle Control means operators can expect to reduce fuel consumption by
up to 10 per cent compared with the industry average, and the 9027F features high-flow, two-way attachment hydraulic lines with proportional control fitted as standard. Operators can easily use single-direction attachments like breakers, or dual-direction attachments like a tilting bucket.
The excavator also offers an optional rotation circuit and multiple flow attachments such as a selector grab or four-line tilt rotator.
“It’s comfortable and easy to use,” said Simon, “and we’ve been really impressed with its power. We had a heavier excavator on standby to lift a large switchboard, but the civvy guys took off with it on the day the switchboard arrived. I didn’t think there was any way the LiuGong could handle it, but we gave it a try and it did it easily. I was surprised at the LiuGong’s power.”

Good choice
Insight Electrical looked hard at the possibility of the 9035E four tonner, but decided the slightly smaller machine would be better suited for the work the company was doing. Simon feels he made the right decision.
“It’s great!” he smiled. “It suits the work we need it to do, and it performs.”

The Stella Racoon 110-4x4 is built to tackle the toughest of conditions.
Stella Racoon 110-4x4
At first glance you can see Stella Racoon is a robust machine, and although small in stature, it is unbelievable what the Racoon is capable of.
Solidly built with a full 42mm x 2mm tubular frame, as well as a second rear frame for additional reinforcement where the drive unit attaches, the Racoon is built to tackle the toughest of conditions. A hefty nudge bar on the front is angled to deflect longer material away from the operator and push it down to be mown over. The checkerplate foot pan is also angled at the front corners, ensuring debris deflection and operator safety.
Sitting and operating the Racoon is a comfortable experience. The seat is fully adjustable with great forward and aft range, and the suspension is easily adjustable to suit the operator or terrain. A serrated steel left-foot brace allows the operator to firmly brace themselves into the seat if the terrain requires, and hand-hold bars are fitted either side of the driver for additional bracing on the steep stuff.
This mower has an extremely low centre
of gravity, and is therefore terrific on steep slopes up to 25 degrees across and 35 degrees up and down. It’s worth noting dual rear wheels are also available, increasing the slope capability even further.
As the name suggests, the cutting width of this machine is 110cm, but there are other options of 95cm in either 2WD or 4WD, as well as engine options to suit various situations. Y Flails are fitted as standard on the Racoon 110-4x4, but this machine had the upgrade of Spade Flails, giving increased cutting capabilities for thicker vegetation. The cutting heights vary from 30mm to 90 mm, and there are four fixed and six floating positions. The deck can be locked in position for attacking rough scrub or set in the floating positions for grass and softer materials, allowing the deck to follow any irregular terrain to leave a neater finish. I mainly used the fixed positions as I was tackling some very overgrown scrub much
landscapecontractor.com.au 59
Victoria-based International Mowers has some very interesting and different machinery in its line-up. The Stella Racoon Flail mower is a great example.
A hefty nudge bar on the front is angled to deflect longer material away from the operator.
Good design
A commercial Vanguard 810cc engine producing 26hp drives the Racoon 110, the fuel injection ensuring it’ll cope with the slopes, unlike a carburetted engine. A very solid rear cowl wraps around and protects the engine from the inevitable knocks and minimises any debris build-up that may occur during operation.
The engine has a large, two-stage Donaldson air filter on its top, and it’s easily accessed for maintenance. Other access for maintenance around the engine is mostly good, with the oil dipstick easily reached and an oil drain hose enabling fast oil drain into a container underneath the machine. Spark plugs may be a little fiddly to remove, as will the oil filter that is close to the battery, but obviously this isn’t a real concern.
Two tie-down eyes at the front and two at the rear ensure safe transporting. The two rear eyes double as lifting points which combine with another dedicated lift point at the front to allow the machine to be hoisted up for underbody maintenance and blade changes.
Exceeded expectations
The Racoon has constant four-wheel drive, allowing it to negotiate very rough and steep terrain. It also has a rear diff lock that is easily engaged and disengaged via a pedal to the left of the steering column. I did briefly get stuck in mud climbing over an unknown buried obstacle, but with quick depress of the diff lock pedal I was on my way again in no time. It’s a great feature.
I have to say I was astounded at what the Stella Racoon 110-4x4 was capable of. I ploughed through some tall scrub, pulverising everything in my path and leaving a neat trail behind with just one pass. Attacking some softer, overgrown weeds and grass was also no problem for the Racoon, with excellent results achieved, again with just one pass and little effort.
I would highly recommend anyone in the market for a Flail mower should check out what Stella has to offer. It exceeded my expectations, and then some.

EGO Z6 zero-turn mower
EGO claims its Z6 zero turn ‘drives like a car’.
That’s a big call, but Landscape Contractor Magazine has to say, it’s a fair call. The Z6 not only drives nicely, it’s super comfortable and a pleasure to use.
Overview
The big feature everyone will pick with the Z6 is the steering wheel.
For those used to a lap/bar setup it may not seem much if an innovation, but we found it to be a big factor in our enjoyment of the mower. The wheel itself has a wealth of information available on an easy-to read LCD interface. There’s three driving modes – Control, Standard, and Sport –which, predictably, vary the sensitivity and performance of the Z6, and it makes it easy to quickly tidy up any large areas like parks and sporting fields which are kept in good nick and just need a quick once-over, through to tackling heavy-going grass or manoeuvring around garden beds or obstacles.
The 107cm (42”) battery zero-turn lawn mower features four independent brushless mowers powered by four 12.0Ah 56V ARC Lithium™ batteries – enough juice to
comfortably cut up to two-and-a-half acres* of lawn. Better yet, the EGO Z6 can hold up to six batteries for an extra boost equivalent to a 22-horsepower engine. EGO calls it Peak Power™ performance, and of course there’s hardly any noise and there are no omissions. The Z6 is fully expandable to be set up to cut three, four, five, or as many acres as needed. With the power status indicator up top,
there’ll be no need to stop what you’re doing to check your EGO Z6’s battery life, and an adjustable hydraulic-suspension seat offers excellent adjustability and a very high level of operator comfort.
Premium features like LED lights and a USB charging port come standard on the Z6 and give the machine a very high-quality, premium feel.

In the driver’s seat
When the time came to drive the Z6, a couple of things hit us straight away.
The first was the seat. It’s a beauty. There’s plenty of adjustment so just about anyone, no matter what their height or position preference, should be able to get comfortable for a good day’s work. Even the seat cover –there was some discussion whether the top was leather or something else, we couldn’t be

sure – but it felt good and contributed to the high comfort level. The suspension set up on the seat was good as well.
The big thing that worries everyone with the thought of going electric is will the gear have enough power? We felt the EGO Z6 lost nothing in sheer grunt to its petrol-powered competition. It tackled some heavy, long unmaintained sections with no problem at all, and in transport mode this won everyone’s admiration as it smoothly, but surprisingly quickly zoomed along from job to job, quiet, agile and of course, emissions-free.
In fact, the test pilot seemed to be struggling to conceal a foolish grin and was clearly enjoying himself as he tackled the various test sections we had ready for the EGO Z6, and he didn’t seem all that keen to hand over the Z6 and get back to work.
Definitely a winner
There’s no doubt in our minds the EGO Z6 is a pro standard, environmentally friendly, hard-working and capable zero turn. The battery system is well sorted – we particularly liked the charging system which allowed charging all the batteries without removing them – we thought the steering wheel was brilliant for both precision and ergonomics, and, best of all, it was very clear that, quiet as it may be, the Z6 has the power to get big jobs done.
We’re definitely fans.

the Hustler mentality
Hustler Mowers’ FasTrak SDX series is ideal for business owners who demand more from their zero turns. It delivers commercial-grade power and performance, perfect for the daily hustle.
Performance
The FasTrak SDX series features a powerful Kawasaki® FX V-twin engine with integrated cleaning ports and a remote air cleaner. These features help ensure the engine remains in top condition, even after prolonged use. A larger Hydro-Gear® transmission allows the mower to easily tackle steep terrain, making it ideal for a wide range of landscaping projects. The FasTrak SDX series also comes with a comprehensive 4-year/1000-hour engine warranty.
The FasTrak SDX is manufactured with a continuous, heavy-duty, welded tubular steel frame. This frame is strong enough to support the 10-gauge fabricated-steel decks, which are available in sizes from 48 to 60 inches. The tough build can endure even the harshest conditions, ensuring the FasTrak SDX will
deliver durable mowing for years to come. Hustler is known for creating machines that deliver expert cutting. The FasTrak SDX features several smart features that help it do just that. These features include:
• SmoothTrak Steering™: This system delivers incredibly smooth and fluid movement, making it easy to manoeuvre the mower in tight spots and around obstacles
• Automatic Park brake system: Simply push the levers out to engage the parking brake
• Flex forks (optional): These forks add extra suspension for cruising around rough, uneven terrain.
Comfort
The FasTrak SDX also provides an exceptional level of comfort and convenience. Its extra high-back suspension seat protects the operator from bumps and drops, while the EVC cushion helps alleviate pressure on the tailbone and lower back. The mower also features cupholders for hydration on the job and a dual USB port for added convenience.
In addition to its impressive performance
features, the FasTrak SDX series is designed for easy servicing. The flip-up seat, removable floor pan, and toolless removable pulley covers make maintenance a breeze. Dual rotomoulded fuel tanks with a capacity of up to 32 litres allow for longer mowing and fewer fuel trips, maximising productivity.
The Hustler FasTrak SDX series is now available in three models:
• FasTrak SDX 48: powered by a 22HP
Kawasaki® FX691 V-twin engine and a 122cm (48”) fabricated-steel deck
• FasTrak SDX 54: powered by a 23.5HP
Kawasaki® FX730 V-twin engine and a 137cm (54”) fabricated-steel deck
• FasTrak SDX 60: powered by a 23.5HP
Kawasaki® FX730 V-twin engine and a 152cm (60”) fabricated-steel deck.

Future proofing your landscaping business with green technology
Aquick look at the finance news headlines might leave you feeling stressed about how you’ll continue to operate and scale your business profitably in our post-pandemic world. So now, more than ever, it’s important to take the time to consider the many options available to help future proof your business for years to come.
Marcus and James Thomas, co-owners of Australian Native Landscapes, have done just that.
Australian Native Landscapes provides commercial landscape management services for blue-chip clients like Vicinity Centres and CBRE. When Marcus and his brother, James, took over the family business in 2018, future proofing and sustainability were two of the core pillars of success on which the brothers agreed to focus.
Offering a range of innovative, zeroemission landscaping and cleansing equipment, EcoTeq was glad to assist with
the transition to an electric commercial zero-turn mower that met the sustainability expectations of Australian Native Landscapes’ customers.
What is future proofing?
Future proofing your business is preparing how your business will adapt and thrive in the face of future changes and uncertainties. It involves developing strategies that will enable your business to remain competitive and relevant over the long term despite emerging challenges, such as new technology, a shift in client preferences, or a competitor on the rise.
Future proofing requires adopting a mindset of innovation and growth. By exploring new ideas and technologies, you can potentially diversify revenue streams by offering new services to reach new markets, and ultimately increase your revenue.
That’s exactly the approach Australian Native Landscapes has taken, adopting
electric outdoor landscaping equipment to offer a more sustainable outdoor-facilities maintenance solution to its clients. And it’s a service offer that’s only set to grow in demand!
Staying abreast of industry changes
Knowing what’s happening in your industry is a key aspect of future proofing your business. However, it’s important to ensure you are seeking information from reliable and credible sources.
Marcus and James stay up to date with industry news, including advances in electric and zero-emission technologies, by:
• Subscribing to relevant trade magazines
• Visiting landscape and related trade shows
• Conducting their own research online via trusted sources
• Keeping in touch with industry bodies such as the Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers, and

Mowing equipment
• Speaking to machinery and equipment suppliers.
When they were considering buying an electric mower, the brothers found many of the big-name brands were only producing smaller, residential electric mowers. However, their business needed longer battery life and the cutting performance to rival a diesel- or petrol-powered commercial mower.
“EcoTeq was quick and responsive. Their customer service is fantastic. They did a demo quickly and then we were glad to do the deal,” said Marcus. “What was compelling for us was the environmental and the social benefits of moving to greener and more future-proof technology.”
Maintenance
Machine maintenance was another compelling factor.
“It’s always been a challenge to make sure we’re maintaining equipment effectively and keeping that cost down. Knowing maintenance is reduced by the technology is key. We don’t have our own in-house mechanics, so knowing how responsive EcoTeq is, and that it’s a lot easier for your own staff to maintain vehicles to an excellent standard, is a bonus for us,” said Marcus.
Practical steps to future proof your business
When considering ways to future-proof a business, Marcus sees three clear areas to focus on:
1. Decide on your legacy: what lasting impact do you want to have on the world?
A landscaping maintenance business has a significant impact on the environment through its equipment choice, emissions generated, biophilia and the chemicals it uses.
Marcus and James want to ensure Australian Native Landscapes’ legacy is a sustainable one.
“As people who are specialists in green life and promote our living environment, it would be remiss of us if we weren’t happy to do what we can to improve the environment by moving away from fossil fuels,” said Marcus.
2. Adapt to your customer needs: anticipating and adapting to changing customer preferences and needs helps to future proof a business.
Their customers are large, public-facing institutions that have environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting requirements.
“Our customers expect a more environmentally friendly way of offering
landscape management services,” said a concerned Marcus.
By adopting green tech, like electric mowers, Australian Native Landscapes is already ticking the ESG boxes its customer base needs (or soon will).
3. Be proactive: to be future proof, Marcus believes you can’t be reactive.
You can be proactive by staying up to date with industry news and developments, and he recommends staying ahead of regulations and legislation. In Australian Native Landscapes’ line of work, by switching from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles and equipment to electric now, rather than waiting until the regulations are inevitably rolled out across Australia, the brothers have set their business up to be ahead of future changes.
Overcoming resistance to change Marcus and James recognise the greatest barrier for a company to adopt electric landscaping equipment can be its people.
“Transition is a human behaviour change piece,” said Marcus. “It’s about helping people get used to what needs to be done for the next stage to ensure the new equipment can be stored and charged in the right location.
“The work you do today affects tomorrow.”
He notes how important it is to create an awareness of what you’re doing in the workplace, and more importantly, why. With EcoTeq providing demonstrations to the team, they could touch, feel and use the equipment, helping them overcome any preconceptions of electric OPE.
“Help people to buy into the fact that battery-powered equipment is capable. Help them to understand how it aligns with your
future vision. Once the day-to-day is taken care of, adoption follows,” said Marcus.
“The operational aspect is very painless. All you need to do is get an electrician in to make sure you have the right power locations in the right storage areas. It didn’t take too much effort to change our operations. We now plug in the EcoTeq mower and the job’s done.”
Side benefits of future proofing Landscape management businesses have always had to be conscious of operating hours while using equipment due to noise emissions, especially in high-density residential areas. However, with electric equipment, these businesses can operate in broadened hours of operation. With their blue-chip client base, the absence of noise complaints has provided the best indication yet that the much quieter electric equipment isn’t raising the ire of residents.
Another benefit of future-proofing your business is that it can help attract and retain top staff. People want to work for a stable business with longevity on its agenda, and that can offer its staff opportunities for growth and development.

Zero Emission Solutions
With electric equipment, landscaping businesses can operate in broadened hours of operation.
Australia’s First Genuine Commercial Battery Self Propelled Mower
No emissions
Notwithstanding the environmentally conscious climate, many professional landscapers are forced to accept higher emissions of petrol-powered equipment as the only viable economic option for performance, efficiency, and runtime. A petrol-operated lawnmower running for an hour is equivalent to a 480-kilometre car ride. The added power output allows Kress outdoor power equipment to meet or exceed the same performance as most commercial petrol machines, but with less noise and zero harmful emissions. In addition, the Kress CyberPack™ battery can recharge thousands of times, up to 10 times more than standard lithium-ion batteries. The extended battery life supports multiple recharges per day and reduces the cost of replacement battery packs over the life of the equipment.
Lis reinventing the professional landscape in Australia, starting with its Kress Commercial KC711.9 60V 51cm Self-Propelled Lawn Mower.
reputation in advanced German engineering, Kress is introducing its complete environmental solution to effectively overturn the existing reluctance to switch from petrol to battery power – through its greener offering, lower investment, greater efficiency, and operating power.
Genuine commercial application
The KC711.9 60V 51cm Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is the first cordless solution for genuine commercial applications. Four different blade types allow for the perfect cut under any grass type or condition (Low Lift, Medium Lift, High Lift, and Gator Blade). The Kress-built brushless motor provides exceptional power for mulching or bagging. With a reinforced steel deck, IPX4 waterproofing, front-bumper protection, trim-side wear plates, and large, robust ball-bearing rubber wheels, it’s guaranteed the Kress will handle the difficulty encountered in commercial lawnmowing.
efficiency, an 88L catcher, and is a lightweight 32kg (without battery). The front bumper guard and side deck wear plates protect the mower against abrasive structures during use and transport.
More power. Less charge time
The KC711.9 eliminates any need for petrol with the product using an eight-minute CyberSystem™ charging battery platform engineered and designed to meet the demanding needs of commercial landscapers. The system features 4Ah (240Wh) and 11Ah (660Wh) CyberPacks™, with the ability to recharge each 60V CyberPacks™ to 100 per cent charge in only eight minutes or 80 per cent charge in five minutes; the fastest recharge of any commercial battery system available. Additionally, the new Kress CyberSystem™ promises significantly higher power output, longer battery life, and lower operating costs longer term than standard battery packs.
Don Gao, Chairman and CEO of Positec Group revealed, “A big trend around the world is people looking into battery-driven, cordless tools, which have a tremendous technological advantage over traditional petroleum. Our new Kress landscaping technology, including our self-propelled lawn mower, will ignite a dramatic change in the professional landscaping industry. No wasted down time, more productivity, and more profits for our customers – that’s what Kress is all about.”
Clean future
As a part of the well-established Positec family of leading brands, Kress has built a reputation for advanced German engineering and has been recognised for designing and manufacturing electric motors for 93 years. Kress is taking on the Australian market with a commitment to ensure the landscapemaintenance industry a zero-emission future. Its unique battery technology makes the transition from petrol- to battery-powered OPE sustainable, with benefits for the environment and the users’ profitability.

EGO is about to take ultraperformance to the next level with the new Z6 107cm E-STEER™ Stamped Deck and 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck models.
EGO’s ‘Sports Mowed’ Z6 riding mower just outclassed itself.
It was already the world’s leading battery powered riding mower, outperforming petrol without the noise, fuss or fumes. Now, EGO is about to take ultra-performance to the next level with the new Z6 107cm E-STEER™ Stamped Deck and 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck models. If you need to step up your lawn-care game, look no further.
Time to switch gears
It’s not just a new way to mow. It’s a new way to drive. The new 107cm Z6 with E-STEER™ puts revolutionary features in the palm of your hands. Now you’ll have the added precision of a steering wheel which lets you handle any turf with ease. And most importantly, it’s a whole lot of fun.
On the front you’ll find a backlit LED
screen which allows control of a whole host of functions at the push of a button, including driving and blade speeds. You’ll also find the power-status indicator up top too, so you won’t have to stop what you’re doing to check your Z6’s battery life.
On the back, there’s two rear paddles. It’s the kind of detail that really puts the sports in ‘Sports Mowed’, allowing you to switch into reverse with ease. And if it’s a lazy Sunday, there’s a cruise-control mode too. Just turn it on and let your Z6 handle the rest.
The Z6 E-STEER™ features four independent brushless motors powered by four 12.0Ah 56V ARC Lithium™ batteries. That’s the equivalent of a 22-horsepower engine and enough juice to comfortably cut up to two acres of lawn. Better yet, it can hold up to six batteries for an extra boost. EGO calls it Peak Power™ performance.
Sometimes bigger is better
Some backyards demand a bit more than others. That’s why EGO is also introducing the 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck model. With welded steel as opposed to a pressed plate, it’s perfect for tackling the kind of yard other ride-on mowers just can’t seem to get around.

The added precision of a steering wheel with a backlit LED screen which allows control of a whole host of functions at the push of a button.
Stepping up from the standard four brushless motors, the 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck Z6 has five, which puts it up against a 25-horsepower engine. It really packs a punch. And with a 30% bigger cutting blade, it’ll make quick work of grass, shrubs, bark and just about anything else you throw at it.
Welcome to the family
It goes without saying that no two backyards are the same. That’s why all Z6 models feature a complete zero-turn radius with 10 cutting-height positions, ranging from 25mm to 100mm. All that grass can either be mulched or side discharged, and if you need a cleaner finish, there’s a bagging kit sold separately too. No need to stop. Just ride on.
Of course, each Z6 has been designed to cover a fair amount of ground, and you’ll have three driving modes at your discretion. The control and standard functions let you manage your power output to suit the job at hand. And the sports mode? We’ll let you figure that one out for yourself.
You won’t be waiting to re-charge all day either. The Z6’s 1600W charger is the

industry’s fastest, topping up four 10.0Ah batteries in two hours and four 12.0Ah batteries in under three. And when you’re running low on charge, the Z6 will direct you to the nearest battery bay – which will probably be in your garage. Clever, isn’t it?
On that topic, every Z6 has world-first compatible rider technology, which means it uses the same batteries as every other EGO tool. So, when you’re done with the lawn, pop open the battery bay and power up your EGO Blower, Chainsaw or Line Trimmer, then get stuck into the rest. There’s a few extra bells and whistles too. Like adjustable seat suspension for total comfort, front, side and rear LED lights, charging port, cupholders and IPX4 weather-resistant construction. Rain, hail or shine, there’s not much that can get in the way of a Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower.
Spoilt for choice
Out of the box, you’ll have your Z6 model of choice, mulching plug, four 12.0Ah batteries for new models or four 10.0Ah batteries for the standard, and a wall-mounted charger. There’s a domestic five-year product and three-year battery/charger warranty, too.
We’ve got you covered.
It’s about time you leave petrol in the dust where it belongs. Order your new Z6 today and jump on the world’s most awarded cordless battery platform. You’ll never look back.

Masport Contractor® series
Built strong and made to last, the Masport 3-in-1 Professional Self-Propelled Mower features a commercial-grade 3-speed transmission with the ability to either catch, mulch or rear discharge. This mower really takes the hard work out of cutting grass.
Three engine options
Powered by the choice of three engines: Briggs & Stratton 190cc OHV Series 850; Kawasaki 179cc OHV Series FJ 180V; or Honda 160cc OHV Series GXV160, this mower is designed for commercial mowing. The Honda model offers the additional feature of Blade Brake Clutch, allowing you to disengage the rotation of the blades without stopping the engine or losing drive.
Highly durable
Manufactured from 2mm steel and able to withstand hard impacts, the robust chassis is hard-wearing and long-lasting. Combined with a generous tunnel and Masport’s famous Quadcut® swing back blade cutting system, the outcome is outstanding performance.
Reliably tough
The die-cast aluminium wheels with rubber tyres are extremely tough. Bolt-in heavy-duty axles that feature 15mm steel axles provide a solid fix to the chassis. Large-diameter and heavygauge reinforced handles withstand the heavy forces applied during commercial mowing, providing greater longevity.
Mowing made easier
Three-position handle height, a soft-grip handle and an ergonomic start position ensure an easier mow. The large, 80-litre catcher allows for longer mowing and reduced running costs, while the mulch feature allows for recycling the cut grass. Backed by a comprehensive warranty and extensive specialist network, the Masport Professional Mower is designed for commercial operation and built to last. What small businesses need to know about premium funding
If you’re facing cash-flow challenges and are worried about how you’re going to pay for your insurance, premium funding may be able to help.
It works by having a funding company pay the full premium of your policy on your behalf to the insurer while you repay the funder in monthly repayments. This can help with your cash flow and can potentially help you afford to take out multiple policies, if required. There is an interest rate to pay – usually a fixed rate – which is generally tax deductible for the business.
Horticulture Portfolio Manager, Rashmi Soni, says there are many organisations that offer insurance premium funding.
“It’s just a loan transaction, really,” she said. “Instead of paying the premium upfront, the funder pays the premium to the insurer, and the business pays the premium funder over, usually, either 10 or 11 months.”
Options
This type of funding can give businesses more options. For example, a small business can use it to pay for a number of insurances, not just one. The funder may also combine multiple policies into a single loan, which can enable the business to make repayments each month via one single payment.
Soni adds that it is often a better option than approaching a bank as no collateral is required. Banks often want security before funding a loan, such as a charge over the business owner’s home.

STIHL connected: smart fleet management
Have you heard of STIHL connected yet?
This smart new technology is designed to make your life easier by managing your tools for you. From providing product run times reminding you about upcoming or overdue maintenance, to showing the last location of tools, STIHL connected takes tool and fleet management to another level.
Components
STIHL connected is made up of three components:
• The STIHL Smart connector which is fitted to the tool
• The STIHL connected app, and
• The Pro Portal (online dashboard).
STIHL connected is useful even if you aren’t a professional user as you can keep track of when your tools need maintenance or servicing, similar to service warning lights in most modern cars. For the private user, STIHL Smart connector and STIHL connected app are all you would need. However, for larger fleets, the STIHL connected portal is designed specifically for making the management of your tools simple and intuitive.
The STIHL smart connector is essentially a Bluetooth hour meter. When fitted onto a cordless or petrol machine and paired through your STIHL Connected App, it counts the machine’s working time and sends it back to the smartphone app via Bluetooth.
That information then gives you a better insight into the tool’s use, and because it’s linked to the STIHL tool database, on many STIHL tools it gives you the machine’s service schedule and will remind you when servicing is due, instead of having to refer to the schedule in the back of the user manual. This means you can keep on top of your machine maintenance at all times.
It can even put you directly in touch with your local dealer to arrange a service, and it’s also a fantastic database of your machine information, including serial numbers.
Versatile
If the STIHL Connected app isn’t open or within Bluetooth range (10m), the Smart

Connector will just continue to count the machine’s run time until the next time the app is opened near it. The more regularly you open the app within 10m of the machine, the more accurate a picture of the machine’s usage can be built up; STIHL recommends opening it daily, typically in the workshop at the end of the day.
Although STIHL love every machine to be a STIHL, you can even use the Smart Connector with other brands or machine types. You just need to stick the connector in a safe place on the machine where it can pick up an electrical signal from the machine when it’s running, such as on the casing near the spark plug or ignition unit. There have even been customers using the STIHL Smart Connector on their motorbike to remind them when an oil change is due.
STIHL connected can give you insights into your tool fleet, too.
Instead of knowing how many times a tool has been in the field, you get information about exactly how long it was used for. That allows you to service machines after a certain number of hours, rather than just guessing. Prevention is better than the cure. By planning your preventative maintenance you can avoid downtime and better schedule your visits to your Local STIHL dealer, potentially saving the business time and money. You can make sure tools are rotated too, so they get even usage, rather than a good tool being left at the back of the workshop.
More information
STIHL Connected relies on a connection to a smartphone, so if a tool was left at a customer’s garden while connected to the STIHL app, it will show where the tool was last paired with the app. Or you can use it to check all the tools are nearby after a day’s work.
If you’re looking to purchase or replace tools, you can see which tools are the most used, under-used or not used at all, or which employees’ tools are best looked after based on their hours of use. That information can give you a much better insight to help choose the right new machinery for your business and manage the lifecycle of your tools much better.

Greenlines Gardenware founder and CEO Gerry Boerlage is the man behind Formboss®, an industry-first garden-edging system which is incredibly easy to install, and which has become the preferred gardenedging system for most landscaping projects across Australia.
Boerlage is a lively and interesting character, still very much involved with, and passionate about, garden edging.
FormBoss – too easy
Curves are often a problem for those wanting to use steel edging, but Gerry Boerlage himself deomonstrated how easy it is with Formboss. In his colourful and easygoing way he showed just how simple it can be.

The cream of Australia’s outdoor power equipment dealers gathered on the Queensland Sunshine Coast for one of 2023’s most anticipated events: the launch of the new Kress CyberSystem™ charging battery platform and its accompanying range of commercial-grade land-care equipment.
It was a gala affair in every respect, from the venue – the Novotel Twin Waters Resort – through the impressive Kress and parentcompany Positec executives in attendance, right through to the equipment itself.
But the highlight was the incredible CyberSystem™ and its ability to charge an 11Ah battery from zero to 100 per cent capacity in 8 minutes.
It doesn’t sound believable, but it was proven to a few doubters in the assembly in the most unarguable way.
Seeing is believing
Whether or not the CyberSystem™ and 11Ah CyberPack™ batteries needed special circumstances to achieve this stunning
Kress
The mission: no emissions.
charge time was put to rest when a dealer from the group was chosen at random and invited to step on to the stage and check the available charge in a CyberPack™ battery. It was confirmed to be at zero. Totally depleted. He then slotted the CyberPack™ battery onto the CyberSystem™ charger and the stopwatch was started as an excited crowd looked on.
At just a few seconds short of 8 minutes the CyberPack™ battery was signalled done, the dealer checked and, there it was: 100 per cent fully charged and ready for work – in roughly the time it would take to enjoy a coffee and check a couple of phone messages.
It was an impressive demonstration in a day full of impressive demonstrations.
The range
While a big target of the function was to set in place a dealer network for the new brand, it was also a good opportunity to show off the equipment and the battery platform, and
Kress and the dealers took full advantage. Demo stations manned by product specialists were set up around the resort, and attendees were let loose on the equipment. Grass was cut, hedges trimmed, logs sawn…it seemed the Novotel received a great deal of sprucing up from an enthusiastic crew of professionals, which was a good deal all ’round.
There was even a decent heavy rain storm which served to demonstrate the gear’s IPX ratings and professional application. Rain or no rain, the Kress gear powered on.
Although Kress has big plans for its range in the very near future, the 60V Commercial equipment on offer at this event included:
• CyberPack™
• K AC875 CyberTank™
• KC711.9 Lawnmower
• KC100.9 Line Trimmer
• KC150.9 Lawn Edger
• KC170.9 Brushcutter
• KC200.9 Hedge Trimmer
• KC300.9 Chainsaw, and
• KC500.9 Backpack Blower.
94 LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

The heart of the matter: the Kress 8 Minute CyberSystem™. An amazing revolution in battery power.
The prosumer range was also on show and received a workout, so it was a comprehensive display.
Hands on
Landscape Contractor Magazine was thrilled to be included in the group and was especially rapt to grab each of the tools and put them through their paces.
At the end of a very interesting day we came away more than impressed. We felt some of the tools – like the 60V line trimmer – were possibly a little heavier than their similarly powered petrol counterparts, but not by much. We’re not even confident we’re right about that, however, the backpack harness can be used to even out the weight of a battery on the tool. We’d need them side-by-side to be sure on weight, so it was very close. But the balance of all the tools was fantastic. Most of all, the power was a real eyeopener. This gear will go toe-to-toe with any petrol-engine gear we’ve used, and do it quietly, with minimal maintenance and

Numerous attachments could be swapped around the backpack power pack thanks to the plug-in set up.
zero emissions. The chainsaw knifed through logs, the line trimmers levelled large sections of heavy grass without any hesitation – the backpack harness version with a blade laid waste to some surprisingly dense bushland found nearby – and the mowers were a pleasure to use.
The backpack Blower should get a mention, because the Kress team set up some measured tracks and threw down a few timber blocks. The idea was to see how far the blocks could be pushed down the tracks by the airflow. As it turned out, the blocks were a secondary consideration. Anyone not ready for the full-power blast of the blower had to take a step back and lean into
the product to stay on their feet, and soon cottoned on to adjusting the well-placed and easy-to-use variable-speed trigger to get the work done.
Excellence
From our experience on the day, the Kress 60V range really will set new benchmarks in Australian landscaping equipment. It’s definitely professional standard in both build and performance, and of course, being cordless, the environmental advantages are obvious: no emissions; very quiet; and lowmaintenance.

Postitec CEO Don Gao is passionate about environmental responsibility.
Positec – parent company of Kress –is an entity very much focussed on environmental responsibility, highlighted in the incredible statistic that, through solar generation, the Positec factory itself produces 110 per cent of the power it needs to operate in summer and 70 per cent in winter. At the head of the successful multinational entity is the eloquent and very personable founder and CEO, Don Gao.
Landscape Contractor Magazine enjoyed an unhurried afternoon with Mr Gao and was spellbound by his vision for not only Kress, but, after 30 years in the power-tool and lawn-and-garden industries, the world he was helping shape.
“My whole life is in the business,” he explained. “We have never produced an
internal combustion engine. Always cordless and corded electric.”
“Lawn-and-garden and power tools was such a small industry segment we had to take whatever battery technology that was available from the big companies. Our industry has particular requirements, so every year we invested more than a million dollars to support a group of scientists to research in our area.”
Ready to go
“Everything’s ready,” smiled the relaxed executive. “In the northern hemisphere we’re already shipping.”
This was in answer to a query on availability.
“I think it’s winter here, but if anyone wants to start early, we’re ready,” he chuckled.

Information and product specs were freely shared.
“The mission: no emissions!”
“My whole life is in the business,” explained CEO Don Gao. “We have never produced an internal combustion engine. Always cordless and corded electric.”
Environmental responsibility and sustainability are clearly subjects on which Gao has passionate feelings.
“I think the world has just started trying to change,” he offered. “It’s hard, especially for professional powerequipment users. The most important thing is power and efficiency. The other thing is cost. Professional people need to make a living. Someone at home may use battery equipment for one hour a week. Professionals need to use it 8 hours a day.
“When we decided to design a professional system, we saw many problems. We’ve spent years and years developing this product.”
Kress in Australia
With the northern hemisphere such a huge market, we wondered what it was about Australia that Gao thought it such an attractive position.
“We have a mission,” he said. “More than 20 years ago when the company started its journey we put forward a motto: ‘our mission: zero emissions’.
“If we really want zero emissions, we need to be in every part of the world, right? If going green is our mission, we don’t want to let one part go. Australia is also
part of the globe. And Australia is a sizable business. DIY use here in Australia is the highest per capita in the world.
“Kress is predominantly a solution for professionals, but we also have a prosumer range for those with a bigger garden and for those looking at a tougher situation than DIY tools can handle.”
Breaking a new product
As for breaking a new brand into the established market, not only is Gao and his team not fazed by the challenge, he appears to relish the idea, and his belief in the new technology he’s offering shines bright.
“Professionals buy 99 per cent of equipment in the traditional channels,” he said, lighting up in his very polished way. “When a new brand comes along, people say, ‘Oh. A new brand. Welcome.’ They don’t really care because they’re stuck with the brands they’ve been using for years, sometimes generations. If your product is just a little bit better, who cares?
“But last year I was doing road shows and the reception was phenomenal. People really understand the world is changing. A little improvement or evolution on the current product is not going to do the job. Industry’s saying, ‘Finally! It’s here!’
“Those are the kinds of reactions we’re getting.”
The future for Kress
For all his urbane polish, Don Gao is clearly not a man to sit still. He and the company he represents are constantly moving forward. We pondered out loud what the future might hold for Kress, and for Kress in Australia in particular.
“We’re not looking at compact earthmoving equipment yet,” offered Gao, choosing his words carefully. “At the moment we’re looking at landscaping equipment and not so much earthmoving plant. We’re focussed on lawn and garden.
“First we will globally launch Kress, then we will move to the next level.”
Zero-turn mowers are definitely on the Kress radar, and it was even hinted that there’ll be robotic zero-turn mowers.
The range on offer at the launch should just about fit out a landscaper from top to bottom, but as we tried to absorb all we could see, Don Gao was clearly envisioning a future with a far larger and more advanced Kress catalogue.
Having met the man, we’ve no doubt that catalogue is well under way, and his charge to help form a world free of emissions will stay top of the Kress priorities.

Mountain serenity
This inviting garden in Sydney’s Blue Mountains was given new life (and style) by Shannon Decker of Now & Zen Landscapes (nowandzenlandscapes.com.au/).
Previously overgrown and neglected, the new owners of the garden asked Decker to create an eye-catching landscape with street appeal.
“The objective was to open up the property and allow greater light infiltration into the front yard in particular,” explained Decker.
A Silver Winner of the 2022 Landscape Excellence Awards for Residential Construction ($150k - $350k), the garden rework included new focal points. The elevation of the house added steps and level changes, so Decker turned this into a design opportunity, incorporating landings, sitting areas and directional shifts. The cobbled courtyard at the front of the house used ironstone from the property to create a sculptured stone cairn.
Site considerations
As the block slopes drastically towards the road, a series of reinforced concrete and block
walls was constructed and faced with bricks similar in style to those of the house.
A front fence was also added, inspired by the surrounding art deco steel fencing, and bespoke panels were created by a local steel artisan. A matching gate was manufactured with panels at the bottom so it could swing inwards and not be impacted by the driveway’s steep pitch.
A sunken, paved, and walled outdoor room was created at the rear, which is the owners’ key entertaining space. Twenty tonnes of rock and soil had to be excavated by hand and wheelbarrowed out through the front yard due to the tight access.
A feature of the outdoor room is a custom day lounge built using a galvanised-steel frame and merbau decking. This area also contains three wicking beds built into the brick walls for herbs and veggies, along with a Zen water feature.
The steps and tiled areas used granite pavers, contrasting with cobblestones in the front courtyard.
“The natural stone is the perfect foil for the cool-climate feature plantings, which
are surrounded by herbaceous perennials,” said Decker.
Challenges of the project
This project was delayed by months of fire haze and bushfires within two kilometres of the site. Excess rain over the subsequent months, including 400mm in four days, extinguished the fires, but turned the dusty soil to mud and made site movements far more difficult.
On a positive note, the rain tested and flushed the new drainage across the site, resulting in the drainage being deemed a complete success and giving the surrounding gardens a much-needed drink.
Once construction was underway in the front yard, it was deemed the design and location of the retaining walls and driveway were too close to the root protection zone of a mature Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood), so the driveway was shifted closer to the side boundary to protect the tree.
A large rhododendron was retained for screening value and provides maturity to

the fresh landscape. Now & Zen was the principal contractor from start to finish, with daily consultation with the clients to ensure a smooth project for their forever garden.
Plant choices
The plant design was based around a coolclimate garden with a few feature plantings surrounded by herbaceous perennials. Juniperus ‘Spartan’ was planted along the side boundary underplanted with prostrate rosemary. A Juniperus ‘Keteleeri’ topiary conifer was added by the entry gate and Scleranthus planted beneath the stone cairn, along with random plantings of Astilbe.
The planting mix also included Acer palmatum (Japanese maple), Azalea kurume (kurume azalea), Camellia spp. (camellia), Daphne odora (daphne) and Bergenia cordifolia (heartleaf bergenia).
Now & Zen supplied and planted feature plantings and trees while the client added her own selection of herbaceous perennials. The selected turf was Tall Fescue as the best grass type to hold its colour throughout the depth of winter.
